SD/SDHC/SDXC Digital Media Card Reader

Question: SD/SDHC/SDXC Digital Media Card Reader

Regarding my HP Spectre x360 (P0A44AV), What is the Media Card Reader's capacity (max)? Is there a list of known capatible brands/models? If so, where is it? Where can I find detailed specs on the card reader, and supported memory cards? Thanks in advance for any help re this inquiry. Charles

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The X220multimedia card reader in the x220 works on the PCI bus and can read SDXC cards. I have seen comments here that it reads the UHS-1 cards. Can it make full use of the read/write speeds of the latest cards, such as the SanDisk Extreme Pro? Also, does it matter whether NTSF or exFAT is used when the card is used as a backup device, not intended for use in a camera? What are the advantages/disadvantages of using SDHC/SDXC cards for backup?

I have a Lenovo IdeaCentre, purchased only four weeks ago.  It product family is IdeaCentre k410, machine type 10089.  Anyhow, the problem is: I inserted a microSD / microSDHC, both of which seem to fit into the slot fine, though neither registers under anywhere in windows explorer, neither in the root of C://, nor in any of the subdirectories, or on the main listing of mounted file systems.  I used the Lenovo Driver Updater and re-installed the SD Card Reader driver, to no avail.  Any help would greatly be appreciated.  As well, the computer runs Windows 8, which has some features I'm unhappy with, and although this is not a windows forum and I don't mean to create a thread that deviates from lenovo-specific topics, I was wondering if there is anything in either the machine architecture or the software of Windows 8 that could hinder m in installing a dual-boot system so that I might have the option of running a variant of linux as a sub-operating system, as I did with windows XP.?????  OK any help at all would be so greatly appreciated, thank in advance.  I really want to be able to retrieve some writing files I have stored in that micro SDHC card.  As another aside, does anyone know the max limit of RAM this computer can take and if it is DDR or some other type?

Answer:SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC/MS/MS Pro card-reader slot not showing up in windows explorer.

hi BrokenHalo,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Regarding your questions:
1. When you inserted the SD card, do you hear a sound that a device is inserted and under Device Manger, do you see a Card Reader?
If not, try to:
a. boot intto the BIOS by pressing F1, load defaults by pressing F9 then press F10 to save and exit BIOS.
b. Reseat the front panel connectors (see page 23 of the hardware maintenance manual)
2. To install linux (i.e. Ubuntu), see if you can install Ubuntu via UEFI. If you're unable to do so or if you want to install other OS, try to:
a. Boot into the BIOS by pressing F2 and set the following settings below
UEFI Boot Mode = Legacy
Secure Boot = Disabled  (if applicable)
CSM = Disabled /  Legacy or Other OS (if applicable)
OS Optimized Default = Disabled or Legacy (if applicable)
b. When finished, press F10 to save and exit BIOS then try to install Ubuntu via Wubi or insert your Windows installation disc to install a different OS.
3. As per this pdf data sheet, the Lenovo K410 has a max RAM of 8GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3  but Crucial reports that this unit can take up to 16GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 - check this site.
Hope this helps

I have a Twist S230u and just purchased a Transcend 64GB micro SDXC card (UHS-1 rated), which comes with an adapter to the SD interface that is compatible with the Twist's media card reader. Up to now, I have not tried to use any card larger than 32GB in the media card reader, and have never had a problem, whether using true SD cards or micro SD via adapters. But with the new card, I seem to be able to access only the first 32GB of memory. Once that limit is reached, files put on the card seem to go down the memory hole in a very strange way: As long as the card is active in the machine, files continue to transfer over to the card with no error indications.  But if you try to read them, they seem to open as empty (perhaps as filled with zeroes?). The file properties show correct information, and there is no data access error in trying to open one of of these files, but application programs complain of corrupted (wrong format) data. Now, if you eject the card and put it back in, the system complains of problems and asks if you want to scan and repair. Electing to do so yields the baffling response that the card was scanned and no errors were found! On top of this, the system still complains of card errors and asks if you want to scan and repair. This cycle will continue indefinitely.  But if you elect to skip the scan and use the card anyway, the directory seems readable, all the files seem accessible -- EXCEPT that files put on the card past 32GB have disa... Answer:Only 32GB accessible on micro SDXC card via Twist media card reader

More information: It appears that the file system on the card looks OK to DSKCHK, but the dirty bit is set. Trying to reset it with fsutil, I am told that the computer cannot write to the card. I have tried to do this two separate ways: 1) by having the card (in its SD adapter) in the Twist's built-in card reader, and 2) by putting the card (in its adapter) into a USB SDHC card reader. The card can be read perfectly in both situations, but can neither be written to (including dirty bit reset) nor formatted. Command-line tools show the filesystem as extFAT, so it seems as if Windows 8 understands the card format. I alerted Transcend tech support to this and they simply replied that the card in question was 64GB (which I told them!), and I needed to be sure that my computer hardware could give me full access to the entire 64GB range. Can anyone point me to a spec for the S230u that says definitively what the upper limit on card capacity is through the built-in media card slot?

I am trying to get it to read a 16g SDHC card, and nothing happens.  I go to device drivers in Control Panel, the media reader isn't listed.   I see no-one else having this problem.   I go to Lenovo's drivers and all I find is integrated camera and media reader but the update is only for the integrated camera.   I was given this instruction:Is this the first time you are using the card reader in your ThinkPad?   >Ostensibly Yes>Under your bios menu, under security for I/O, is your card reader disabled?  >How do I go about this?I was also told that under drives in device drivers it should be listed and it is not listed.   Many thanks for any help.

Does the R600 support the sandisk "extreme 30 MB" or the SDXC card?

I ask because they seem to the only ones with 64Gb capacity. I need the maximum additional capacity possible

Answer:SDHC extreme or SDXC card work in Portege R600

As far as I know the SD card reader supports the SD card up to 2GB, SDHC up to 16Gb and mini SD card (with adapter) up to 2GB.

I didn?t find any details about the usage of bigger SDHC cards and I think you will have to test it yourself?. But in my opinion there could be a problem using such cards!

Nowhere in the documentation, web site is any info about what kind of controller and hence what size SD cards this model is supporting.Even Lenovo tech support doesn't know that info!I am really hesitant to buy a SDXC card of +32GB only to find out it supports on SDHC cards, thus limited to 32GB... thanks for any useful info, Ralf

Answer:What kind of SD card controller is in a Lenovo IdeaPad 120S-11AIP? SDHC or SDXC compatible?

Hi ITWorxLA,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
As per system overview :
IO port: Memory card slot (SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC)
Platform specification:
One microSD Card slot, supports up to 2TB
Usually there would be stickers on the box or laptop to indicate the format it also supports.
You can try to find/borrow  a spare 32GB SDXC to test first before purchase.
Hope this helps answer your query.

I have an HP Pavillion DV1000 notebook and recently made the *wonderful* jump to Vista. My problem is this: my on board digital sd card reader no longer works. There is a light next to it and upon insertion of the card, it no longer lights up. I have checked the driver via device manager and it is up to date and also states the hardware is working properly. I have tried downloading the driver manually, but it tells me it still says it is up to date. i am in desperate need of this as I have NUMEROUS pics I need to transfer since I don't have the cable to connect the camera to the p.c. either.

Answer:Digital Media Card Reader and Vista

Try uninstalling the device in Device Manager and rebooting to have Windows reinstall the drivers.

How can I find out if my SD card reader supports SDXC cards.
My laptop is a satellite A300 and the properties of the card reader say " SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controlle".

Am I able lto use SDXC cards with this device and if not am I able to upgrade the software to support SDXC cards?

Thanks for your help

Answer:Satellite A300 - Does card reader support SDXC cards?

I read in the forum about the card reader on Satellite A300 and I found very useful info.
The card reader supports following kind of cards:

- SD Card - 8MB-2GB
- SDHC Card - 4GB
- xD picture card - 16MB-2GB
- Memory Stick - 8MB-256MB
- Memory Stick Pro - 256MB-2GB
- MultiMediaCard - 8MB-1GB
- miniSD (with SD adapter) - 32MB-2GB

As you can see teh SDXC cards are not supported... in such case I recommend using an common external USB card reader which would support the SDXC cards

I've had a time of it with Hardware and Software support trying to get an answer and hope someone here might have had the same issue. I've had a H405 7723-1AU  for about three weeks now. I've been using SD and MicroSD cards in the Media Reader with no problems. I popped in a brand new Transcend SDHC 16GB (Class 10) card today and it doesn't get recognized. I've installed the Realtek USB driver from the disk - it previously had the MS generic driver - to 6.1.7600.30116 3/12/2010 but it still doesn't work. The machine "acts like" it's going to read (well, the hard drive light show a lot of activity when it's inserted) but then it just sits there... To test the card I hooked up my 5+ year old SanDisk USB reader and it reads all the cards; SD, MicroSD with SD adapter, and SDHC just fine... slow transfer though. Lenovo Software Support thinks it's a bad Media Reader, and of course, Lenovo Warranty thinks it's a driver issue. Any ideas from an experienced user? Thanks in advance!

Answer:H405 Media Reader won't read SDHC

hey tpillars, since both generic driver and the Realtek that came with the disc did not work, could you go to this link and try this driver > try this too >>

Has anyone done this? Would appreciate comments or experiences. Thanks If a 128GB SDXC card (class 10) is purchased on ebay, will it be recognized by the Media Card Reader and work in a ThinkPad 11e (the Celeron N2940 model)? I would like to store mp3, mp4, and jpg files on this card, to supplement my 128GB SSD. Also, for this model there is conflicting info about whether the 4GB memory is soldered onto the motherboard or replaceable. Has anyone with the Celeron N2940 model upgraded to 8GB DDR3? Is the Memory soldered or in a socket?

Is it an old computer ? Those SDHC cards have evolved to higher capacities over time but your computer's Bios may be too old to read the larger ones.

Hi and welcome to SF!
Yes, Windows 7 recognizes these formats natively, but I recommend that it be with the SP1 installed. As to whether your card reader will be able to read them, I'd say no - taking into account the age of your Dell. But if you can tell the model of card reader, I could tell with more certainty. Use Speccy - Download in case of not knowing what type of card reader. I look forward for your reply.

Maybe if you told us the make and model of your card reader and whether it is internal or external, instead of putting all your question in the title and just a sad smiley where the information should be, you might get an answer.

@YoannFromParis, Hello and thanks for posting on the HP support forums.  When dealing with the issues from doing an update to Windows 10 there are a few things that may work to fix the issue. First thing to try is running the Windows Update Troubleshooter. The next step is to run the HP BIOS recovery to reload the BIOS to see if it will sync up with the operating system. HP Notebook PCs - Restoring the BIOS And if this fails to fix the problem, if you did the update to Windows 10 you can do the stand alone installation to see if it fixes any conflict. Download Windows 10 The other option is to roll back to the previous operating system until new updates get released by Microsoft and then uploaded on the HP support page for your notebook. Please let me know how things go.  Thanks again for posting and have a great day.

W520Win 7When I put my smart card into the reader and open My Computer, the card isn't shown.  I see C: and D: but no smart card.  I noticed that this only seems to happen after I have had the computer go to sleep in Maximum Battery Life mode. Another annoyance:  I thought I would just hit the "refresh" button on My Computer.  Big mistake.  The little green bar just keeps loading and getting slowly bigger for like 30 minutes until I finally get disgusted and restart the computer.  Then it can see the smart card...  Any ideas?

Answer:SDHC reader doesn't see the card.

You should update the Smart card reader driver and BIOS the check if the issue gets resolved.
Smart Card reader driver can be download from the mentioned below web link.
SmartCard reader driver for Windows 7 (32-bit)
SmartCard reader driver for Windows 7 (64-bit)
BIOS can be download from the mentioned below web link.
If the issue continues the change the battery mode from Maximum Life

Hi, I recently bought a T430s and when I tried to insert a SD card it did not show up in my computer. I've tried 3 different SD cards the sizes are16 gb, 32 gb and 2 gb and neither of them shows up, to make sure the problem is not in the SD card I tried using the SD cards in 2 cameras and 2 other laptops. In all those devices the cards works.I have tried installing these drivers from this thread but it did not work. I also tried following the instructions in this thread but that did not help either.According to the device manager the Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller is working correctly. The Ricoh SD Disk Device is also working correctly. Whenever I insert the SD card the Sound for a new device plays and when i remove the SD card the removal sound plays. How can I fix this? I'm going away for 7 weeks with my laptop so I need to fix it ASAP and I dont have time to send the laptop to Lenovo. EDIT:I uninstalled Ricoh Media driver and now 1 of the cards show up but Windows complains about that it needs to be formatted, but the size is 0 so that doesn't work either. Answer:T430s SDHC card reader not working

I'm experiencing a similar situation with my 1-year old T430s. The built-in card reader was working fine until recently when it stopped working.
Now the built-in SD card reader doesn't recognize SD cards that are recognized in external USB adapters.
Device Manager shows Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Controller when an SD card is inserted into the card reader but neither Windows Computer Management/Disk Management nor Windows Explorer show the drive. Device Manager indicates that the driver is up-to-date (v6.10.10.32 25May11.)
When I put the same SD cards into an external USB adapter they're recognized by Windows, assigned a drive letter and visible to Windows Explorer as well as other applications.
Do I have a defective card reader?

I plan to purchase a CANON S5IS digital camera, and someone recommended that I use SDHC memory cards. I recently bought a Digital Concepts 21-in-1 Card Reader/Writer; however, I don't see the SDHC designation shown on the package. The only SD cards listed are: SD; SD-Ultra; SDC; and Mini SD. Will this reader read an SDHC card as well? Thank you.

Answer:Is my card reader compatible with SDHC Cards?

If it the same model as this one it should do:

My w500's sd card reader doesn't seem to be recognizing SDHC cards at all. (As in: pop the card in, nothing happens. No change in Explorer, nothing.)  I've got the latest Ricoh drivers from the Lenovo website installed.  I'm running Windows 7. I've found a few posts online from people who've had trouble with SDHC cards, but no solutions yet.Unfortunately, I've only got an SDHC card available for testing currently.  (I know it works, as I've been using it in my camera.)

Answer:w500 card reader & sdhc cards

Hello mate, How big is your SDHC ? My T510 is working well until 16Gb never tested more.

I have a Satellite A500-1GH having Windows 7 64bit. I'm about to buy an SD card, and I was wondering if the SD card slot at the front of the laptop is compatible with SDHC cards and the latest SDXC cards. If so, do I need to download some software and/or drivers for these kind of SD cards to work?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite A500-1GH - Is SD slot compatible with SDHC and SDXC?

SDHC is definitely compatible.

As for SDXC, I think there is a Win7 WindowsUpdate that supports SDXC.

Hi,Just received my brand new Sandisk Extreme 45MB/s 16GB SDHC card from Amazon.New card works fine in my cameras and also can be read fine from X121e IF I use an external USB SHDC card reader. However, when I plug the SDHC card into the built in reader then nothing happens - nothing detected, no additional drive letter etc. If I plug other 8GB or 16GB SDHC cards into the built in reader then they work fine. Have tried several. Have checked the new SDHC card with the h2testw utility and it reports fine. This new SDHC card was bought from Amazon direct - NOT a marketplace reseller etc... So, should be no question about its authenticity... Any ideas anyone please? I dont mind using the external USB reader but it is slower than the built in card reader when I test some of my existing SDHC cards...Plus it means pluggin another device in  - not ideal..

Answer:New SDHC card not being detected by built in Reader on X121e

Hello Harry,
The issue could be recognizing the more capacity card.
Kindly update the card reader driver and then update the BIOS

I just inherited a Dell E6520 laptop that has had a fresh install of Win 7 Pro 64 bit put on it. All of the available updates through Microsoft Update have been done to date, and the drivers available for my service tag have been downloaded and installed from the Dell support site.

The only remaining problem I am having is with the on board SDHC card reader. I have a SanDisk 16GB SDHC card that the on board reader completely ignores. The reader works perfectly with a 4GB SDHC card. Both cards are formatted with a FAT32 file system.

The 16GB card works fine in an external USB reader, and it works fine in the on-board reader in my HP 6730B running Win 7 Pro 32 bit OS.

Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Answer:Dell E6520 SDHC reader can see 4GB card but not a 16GB

Dell has a memory card reader driver, listed with the various chipset drivers. Suggest you install the chipset drivers and the memory card reader and see if that helps.

However, some card readers on Dell's will not read high capacity memory cards, although this is new enough that it should.

As far as I know the Satellite A120 supports SD cards up to 1GB.
So SDHC cards are not compatible.

If you want to read SDHC cards on your notebook, you need an external card reader (USB).

Just purchased T420 from Outlet store.  When I attach a card reader to any USB port, I can't get the restart unless I remove the card reader from the laptop.  My good SanDisk USB Flash drive does not stop it from restarting. It's just the cheap card reader.  I never had this issue with my T61. Is this normal? Chief'R

Answer:T420 will not restart with SDHC card reader attached to USB Port

Well, it can if there is media in it. Go into the BIOS and change the boot order such that the USB boot is below other devices. DVD, then HD and it should not affect it.

Well yeah, the problem is in the title. It's a 7764 with the standard SD/MMC reader. I had Vista Ultimate and tried to fix the issue for some time (changing drivers, installing MS hotfixes), but it didn't help, so I thought the last chance would be with Win 7.Now I have Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit and the issue stayed the same. After the card is inserted (in my case it's a SanDisk Extreme III 16GB class 6 SDHC, but I've read that other people with 16GB cards had the same problem), the system doesn't react in any way. Actually in Vista sometimes the Safely Remove Hardware icon appeared for a second just after inserting the card then disappeared, in Win 7 there's no reaction whatsoever). Tried to force the system to see the card, scan for hardware changes, refresh etc, no result. Any ideas? It's one of the best cards on the market, and definitely not some no-name, so why won't my X61 see it? It's supposed to be SDHC compatible (and reads my 8GB SDHC fine). Thanks!

Answer:SD card reader won't recognize 16GB SDHC cards (or bigger probably)

I had a similar problem with a card reader on a different laptop. I contacted TI (Texas Instruments - the card reader maker) and they indicated there was a limit on the card reader (actually the driver) and it would not read larger cards. The only way you will probably make it work is to get a driver update for the card reader that will read 16gig cards.

I hope that someone has the answer to this - according to the manual the notebook (brick!) supports SD / SD-IO / MiniSD / Memory Stick / Memory Stick Pro / xD / MMC cards but no specific support for SDHC cards is mentioned. Does anyone know the answer to this or point me in the right direction i.e. are there tools to test for this?

Ideally I do not want to buy a SDHC card only to find out that it does not work with the notebook.

I have a Lenovo G780 laptop, and have had it for over a year, until 2 weeks back, everything was working fine. I started to have problems with the headphone jack where sound only came out of right ear.  Stereo Speakers were working fine. I made sure to go into Sound> Playback devices to make sure the Conexant Smart Audio was working right and the sound to L and R were balanced. I reinstalled the drivers (or what I found) and still it did not help. Now, a few days ago, the headphone jack stopped working completely (speakers still work). I retored my laptop to an earlier restor point (a month back when everything was working fine) and still no effect. Today when I tried to use the built in SD card reader, that I had used many times before, the card  reader would not detect it. I tried other Cards and they did not work either. I tried re installing the realtek drivers and got no effect. In device manager, whenever i insert the card, the wind refreshes, but nothing shows up in My Computer.I take good car of not laptop and there is no visible damage to any part of the laptop. I suspect the board inside is somehow damaged because the jack and card reader are located within a few mm of eachother. I have not yet tried factory restore, but all restore points do not fix the issue.

My satelite A100 does not support my sandisk 4 GB SDHC card.
"normal" SD cards are not a problem with the internal card reader, and there are no problems with the sandisk 4 GB SDHC card using a external card reader.

is there a software solution?

I do not have time to read users manuals for your notebook model but all supported cards can be listed there. I suppose SDHC is not listed and not supported.

I have switched on Vista ReadyBoost using a pretty old SD card of only 256MB in the built-in card-reader of the notebook. It is kind of speeding up the system so I plan to buy a big size high speed SD-Card to use it for Vista ReadyBoost in order to gain full value of this functionality.

However, SD-Cards of 4GB (mostly) or more than 4GB (all) are not just SD but SDHC cards.

Officially the internal 6-in-1 Bridge Media Adapter of my Notebook is specified to deal with "SD Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, xD-Picture Card, SD IO". So I am wondering, if the card reader will support SDHC cards as well. If it wont support SDHC, it would be intersesting if at least (standard) SD cards of 4GB are supported.

Any help is highly appreciated!

I got an 8gb micro sdHC card filled up using the adapter, with music, which plays fine.

Before I received this cheap us>microSD adapter I asked the seller if it read HC cards. They said no. It's just a cheap chinese adapter on ebay so there isn't much info on it at all. It's write up didn't say anything about HC capabilities.

Like I mentioned, I was able to use it to load up an 8gb sdHC card.

Does this mean that it will probably also work with a 32gb sdHC card? Is there a size limit that the 8gb card didn't exceed?

If yes, I'd like to buy more now because I don't think these will hold up to much use.

Answer:Can My Usb>microsd Adapter Read Sdhc If It Fills An 8gb Sdhc Card? Seller Says It Won't.

I found the same item elsewhere on ebay which mentions that it recognizes up to 32gb, which is what I needed.

So....I suppose there are quite a few adapters out there labelled only SD but will in fact read up to at least 32 SDHC cards.

I think going over 32gb cards might require additional capabilities.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

If might be rather difficult for any of us to offer any suggestions if we don't know the brand and model number (and maybe an FCC ID#) of your reader.

Does the reader packaging or documentation say it is supported by your operating system (XP Pro)?

Is it an external USB reader or one made to be installed in a desktop computer?

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I have tried right clicking the drive in 'my computer' and selecting Windows fax and piture wizard, but still nothing happens. It opens as a slide show that will not work. No matter what I select, even the software for my camera, it will only open with the slideshow. You can add Video folders on the micro SDXC to your Video's Library in Windows 8.

Then when you set up Media Center browse to the Library where the video files reside and you will then be able to play all of the video files which reside in your Video's Library from Media Center.

Shawn's tutorial on adding folders or drives to the Library's should be helpful.

Answer:Digital Memory Card Reader - Driver update required

Hi Martin

The memory card compatibility depends on the available hardware and not software!
This means that a card reader driver update will not help you!!!

First of all you should check your user manual to ensure what cards are compatible with your internal card reader!!!
Generally such details can be found in the preinstalled user manual.

You notebook model is not known to me but I doubt you would be able to use the 8GB Sony Memory Stick. Possibly the size is simply not supported.

I have thinkpad w530 w windows 8.1 I am trying to capture video footage into my computer using a firewire card that of course plugs into the MEDIA CARD READER SLOT. I can't get the computer to recognize my camcorder- the camcorder connection does not show up in DEVICE MANAGER I am using HDVSPLIT to capture the video and also in hdvsplit there is a message, "camera not recognized" or something like that.  I am not sure if the media card reader is bad, or maybe the firewire card is bad or maybe it is the hdv split that is the problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Answer:How do I tell if my Media Card Reader/Express card slot is functioning correctly?

Could it be the ExpressCard slot that the FireWire card plugs into?  I've never seen a FireWire card that plugs into the media card slot used for SD Cards.
FireWire cards can be a little tricky to get working sometimes, especially when interfacing with a camcorder.
Have you checked with the manufacturer to see if Windows 8.1 drivers are available for it?  Even if they are not, it may be possible to use Windows 7 or even Windows Vista drivers.
Once you have verified that the FireWire card is recognized, plug the camcorder in again, amd see if it gets recognized.  If it does not, check with its manufacturer for Windows 8.1 drivers, just like you did with the FireWire card.
At that point, the hardware should all be working with Windows 8.1.

Hi, The SD card reader in my laptop is not working. I have a Carbon X1 laptop (machine type 3443CT0) running a fresh install on Windows 7, 64-bit Ultimate edition. This is not the Win7 image that comes with the laptop, but rather a fresh installation of vanilla Windows 7 ultimate from a Microsoft DVD. I installed all of the relavent drivers for this machine from Lenovo's drivers page: Under the "Camera and Card Reader" category, I installed: Media Card Reader Driver for Windows 7, version, released Aug 13, 2012. The installer seemed to finish successfully and asked for a laptop reboot. However, the SD Card reader is still not working. Under Device Manager, in the "Other devices" category, I see "Base System Device" listed with missing drivers. Under the details tab of that item, I choose "Hardware Ids" under property. The vendor ID is 1180 (for Ricoh) and the Device ID is E822. By searching the website (below), I found out that this is the "Ricoh PCIe SD/MMC Host Controller"  Are other people having problems with installing this driver? I also tried the Windows 8 64-bit driver, just in case and that is not working either. The SD Card reader works under Linux, but not under Windows 7, so I'm pretty sure it's a device driver issue, not a hardware iss... Answer:Drivers for Ricoh Media Card (SD card) reader on Carbon X1 not working

Maybe somebody with a Carbon X1 running Windows 7, can look for "Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller" under Device Manager and let me know which driver they are using... or better yet send me a link to download that driver file and I can use it on my system...hopefully.

Revisited this machine that I restored to life a couple of years ago.  Tried getting it to read some files (photos) off an SD card but it didn't even recognise the presence of the card when inserted. The downloads page for this machine at shows SP33439 as the driver package, which I had previously installed.  Tried re-downloading and reinstalling, still not recognised. OS is XP Pro SP3.  Machine tag is PV158PA#ABG. Any clues?

The media card reader in my Studio XPS 8100 will not read a miniMMC card. Other cards work fine. The card works fine in other readers. I tried updating the driver with R245429.exe, but the problem persists. Is that the correct file for the latest drivers? Do I need to replace the reader? It's a Foxconn card reader, FITI PID9106--right? I need help in troubleshooting this problem. Thanks.

Dear All,

A brandnew VERBATIM 8GB Micro SDHC Card is only recognized as 1GB in my T130 / WIN 7 - funny enough: A brandnew SANDISC 8G SDHC Card is recognized as 8GB
Anything I can do here to use the VERBATIM Card ?

Any Feedback is much appreciated

Ciao Gerhard

Answer:Re: 8GB Verbatim Micro SDHC card recognized as 1GB Micro SDHC Card

Where did you buy that 8GB SD Card? Are you sure it's genuine?

If you got it from eBay or similar, it may be a fake SD Card that is physically 1GB but reformatted and re-badged as 8GB.

Question: SDHC reader issues

First, I'm not looking for help with my tablet problem, but this preface is to provide background information. I'd seen many USB card readers advertised, and I ordered the SanDisk MicroMate (a SDHC device), thinking I could connect this to my android tablet and quickly have additional (using a new 8GB SDHC card) storage for reading and writing. When the connection was made, however, the message was "Blank USB storage; USB storage blank or has unsupported format" I offer this to indicate that the reader does seem operational. The card couldn't be accessed using the tab's file managers.

In an attempt to figure out the problem, I tried using it on my two Windows PCs (both Win 7-64b computers, a desktop and a laptop) and found what are to me confusing results:
1. If I insert the new 8 GB SDHC card into the internal card reader of either of my computers, it is immediately accessible. I was able to copy a file to it. Format is FAT32.

2. If I connect the reader to a powered USB port on either computer, the reader device is shown with no errors in Device Manager, but when the card is inserted into the reader, the error "the drive must be formatted" appears.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

If you have no needed files on the sdhc format it with SD Formatter & see how that goes. Download link is on the left.

I have a T500, but just got my daughter a T510. She is now away from home at school and having trouble with the media card reader. Seems it is very different from the one in the T500.Is there any place I can get instructions on how to use this reader T510 media card reader? Her camera uses an XD card, which just slips into the T500 reader, but she says that the media reader is a tray in the T510.Can it read an XD card? If so how does it operate. Thanks

From Personal Systems Reference; Lenovo ThinkPad Notebooks; April 2010 - Version 3765-in-1 reader (MMC, Memory Stick, Mem Stick Pro, SD, SDHC)The T510 reader is not compatible with xD cards. She will have to use a usb cable from the camera or get a usb xD carder reader.

Hi - I have Windows XP & when I installed a universal USB 2.0 card reader, called "In put card reader" on the box, my computer re-booted several times and I had to use "last known configuration that worked" to get it to stop re-booting. Once I did that, I got an error message, Code 28. Something was wrong with the driver XP installed. Now, it won't work (not that it did in the first place). Can anyone help? Oh yes, the "About" says it's from C-Media, but I can't find a similar divice on their web site. It is not the 220, it says "C-Media USB 2.0 Full Speed Card Reader Monitor Verson 1.08, copyright 2003-2005. Thanks.

Answer:Media Card Reader ???

Your T61 doesn't have the SD card reader on the front, built-in to the laptop?  Regardless... I believe what you want is this... It goes into the ExpressCard slot of your T61 and then you can read your SD cards (and 10 other types)!

Today I inserted my Camera Chip XD into the reader at the front of the case, but nothing appeared on-screen to start up and transfer/look at pictures.

I looked at the Help section but cannot seem to get anywhere?

Any advice?

If not, you could check device manager, but I'd have to wonder if maybe the device became disconencted during shipping.

Hello, I'm not sure if this question belongs here or in the Mac section, but hopefully I can be steered in the right direction...
I just purchased a Kingston Media Reader (FCR-HS3) to transfer files from my camera to my PC. However, It did not occur to me before buying to check if the reader might also work with my wife's Macbook. The packaging only indicates Windows XP/Vista/7 , but I read a few product reviews suggesting that it does (they did not definitively say so).

Will it actually work with both PC and Mac?

I bought the Reader on-line, so to save the hassle of mailing it back, I thought I might be able to check here first, instead of opening it, testing it, and then having to send it back.

Thanks very much for your time!

I have the reader in a T400 but no instructions on how to use it.  I put a SD card in and nothing happens.  Anyone have theirs working or have instructions etc. Thanks.

Answer:7 in 1 Media Card Reader

I simply inserted my SDHC card into the reader and the "Green," light came on.  As soon as this occured the computer mounted the device making the *beep* noise and showed the device.  Try a different card, or make sure you are inserting it correctly. the green light is coming on.

I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-W55. I "loaned" my cord to my bro's girlfriend to use on her camera, but I know I will never get it back.

I've decided to buy a new reader... looking at my Memory Stick it is called Memory Stick Pro Duo.

I went on Newegg and found - Transcend TS-RDM5W USB 2.0 Card Reader - Card Readers and - IOGEAR GFR209 12-in-1 USB 2.0 Pocket Card Reader/Writer - Card Readers.

Was wondering which one you guys would suggest, or if you have a better idea on what I should get.

I'd like to keep this under $20 if possible.

Thanks for your time!

Question: Media card reader

Posted this in windows and not in hardware cause it's windows's fault...I have a 4 slot media card reader. All 4 slots show up as 4 separate "removable disks" all the time. It's really annoying because everyone gets confused about which one is the flash drive they just plugged in. Can I change it so that the reader shows up only when there is actually a card in it? Also, it would be nice to remove it from the safely remove hardware thing since that completely shuts it off until you reboot. Also, if possible, I want to get rid of my USB WiFi dongle from the safely remove hardware list since I only safely remove it by accident all the time when I try to unplug my flash drive...

Answer:Media card reader

"USB-driveletter-mngr" - available as - do a search - wil allow you to turn off visibility on those you don't use or want to see.  It is useful with a reader left in place to label the reader itself for letter sequence which helps with ID of which slot = which drive letter. You could also if card reader left in - possibly use TweakUI to stop letters showing.Wouldn't have thought you'd need a reboot to reinstate reader, if it was ''safely removed'' during a session.  Your safely remove list tho will I think by default show all USB items active, except a hub which would show in Device manager.

Have had problems with two 8gig SDHC cards in a row when attempting to access the card via the built-in reader on the laptop. Both times this is what happened:For a few minutes I can access the card and view the photos, but after some time the pictures turn grey and attempts to access the card again lead to a message that card needs to be formatted. I would hate to lose the data on these cards. It has already happened twice which leads me to think that there is something wrong with the built-in reader, since the cards have worked fine on other computers. Has anybody had this problem? What can I do to rescue the data? I bought an external reader for the cards now to be on the safe side, but I would hate for this to happen again. Thanks.

Answer:SD reader corrupts SDHC cards?

This could be happen. Happen to me with an external card reader a long time ago. Test your SD card into another card reader to discard any SD problem. If it works good, the problem can be the card reader. To make a recovery, you can use software like GetDattaBack or Ontrack Easy Recovery. If your laptop still under warranty, call customer service. Maybe they will replace your card reader. Best regards.

Hi, I have read on the forum that people are using the SDXC cards with their Yoga 13's.I have purchased a Sandisk 64Gb SDXC ExtremePro card but when I put it into the Card Reader a blue screen comes up saying " Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart." It also gives and error with this message saying: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (TosExt.Sys). It cannot restart again until I remove the card, the same thing happens in SAFE MODE also or if I try to start the computer with the card inserted already. The card is brand new and I bought it in a reputable shop. I have tested the card in a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 and it works fine. I have also tried to insert a different standard SD card into the Yoga but the same thing happens. I have reinstalled the driver for the reader but the problem still remains. The OS is Windows 8 64 bit. The card is in ex FAT format and I re-formatted it again just to be safe but still no luck. I was not able to find anything regarding this online but saw that some people here have similar problems.I would really appreciate if someone could help or at least let me know if there is a way of contacting Lenovo about this problem, I see that they will only accept emails regarding the ThinkPad product line.Thank you in advance and best regards to all!
