I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It sounds to me like your rescue and recovery partition may be corrupted. My recommendations is to get the rescue and recovery CD's from Lenovo. I had to purchase some for an old T40 and it cost me like $45, but after you have them you can have piece of mind that you can replace the hard drive and still restore back to Factory settings. After you get the recovery CD's I would recommend reinstalling rescue and recovery.

Hello, I've lost access to my Thinkpad because of lost password to Hard disk. Then purchased another HDD and installed OS and drivers. Getting few problems, one is that I cannot use ThinkVantage key to restore my system. But I have Rescue and Recovery Startup Disk & Product Recovery Disks, so can I recover my old HDD?If not possible to use the old, can I get back my system working[as factory default] with those disks? Thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad z60m: HDD password [But have Rescue and Recovery Startup Disk & Product Recovery Disks]

For second option, what will be the passwords of the recovered system: BIOS, HDD, Windows?

Hi, I own a T60 laptop with Windows XP professional.I bought the Product Recovery CDs separately, around 1 year ago.Now my HDD has completely died, I cannot restore the orginal configuration. So, I got a new HDD, and tried using the product recovery CDs, but realized that I do not have a bootable CD which can ask me to load these product recovery CDs. It seems that Lenovo forgot to ship me this bootable disc - which I have found in forums is called - "Rescue and Recovery CD". How can I get these rescue and recovery CD? Has anybody gone through this?Do I need to buy these CDs again?   I got the following product recovery cds:Main FRU P/N: 43T8618XP-P SP2 Disc 1 of 6: CD P/N 43T8619Disc 2 of 6: CD P/N 43T8620Disc 3 of 6: CD P/N 43T8621Disc 4 of 6: CD P/N 43T8622Disc 5 of 6: CD P/N 43T8623Disc 6 of 6: CD P/N 43T7840  Please help.Peter.

Hi everyone, I've just recently became a new owner of a T61, and really enjoying it. I haven't had a chance yet to test-drive the lenovo phone support, as I have not yet screwed anything up that bad that required their help. I did try a clean factory reinstall from the service partition and it worked great. I would like to find out, how does one use the rescue and recovery startup disc, and the product recovery discs that I created myself? From my previous experience with Dell and HP, I only had to insert the first one and restart the computer, and the rest followed. But with ThinkPads, if I ever wanted to bring it to a clean factory state using those discs, do I use rescue and recovery first, followed by the product recovery? I'm curious, what is the difference between the two?

Answer:How to use the rescue and recovery, and the product recovery discs ?

The disks you created will allow you to recover your operating sys. without the rescue and recovery portion of your harddrive. It is especially usefull if your harddrive dies and you need to load onto a new drive.

Hello, I have made a iso copy of the four recovery disk of my Thinkpad Twist that I bought 3 years ago (namely: SR30A19082-1: Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products Disc 1 of 2; SR30A19082-2: Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products Disc 2 of 2; SR30A19083-1: Operating System Recovery Disc Windows 8 PRO Disc 1 of 2; 0B76921: Operating System Recovery Disc Windows 8 PRO Disc 2 of 2).I savec those iso copy on the cloud. I want to factory rest my laptop, that meantime was upgraded to win10 and UEFI. I made a bootable USB key, and copy everything from the iso image of Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products Disc 1 of 2, booted on USB, but then just after asking if I want to format all Hard drive as it is a 500GB HDD with a 24GB SSD), i receive a msg saying that recovery failed. Any suggestion? Thanks a lot.

Last week, I purchased a new Lenovo X260 (Type 20F6-006AUS). Packaging said it came with Windows 10, but when I fired it up it booted into Windows 7. After searching for the Windows 10 media or files, finally succumbed and contacted Lenovo support. The agent said the Windows 10 files are available by request and come on separate media, so I made the request.  This afternoon, a thumb drive with the Windows 10 Product Recovery arrived.  (Rhetorical: Can it really be Product Recovery if the laptop was represented as having Windows 10 installed, but was not actually installed?) I followed the instructions. Now when it boots to the thumb drive, I click past the Acceptance of Terms and conditions, acknowledge it'll wipe out all my personal data and watch the recovery start. About 1 minute in, I get a pop-up with the window banner "Product Recovery" and the message "Recovery failed." The recovery process must have gotten far enough that it wiped out the boot sector on the SSD, because I can neither boot to the original factory SSD or to the Product Recovery USB they shipped. I've searched around and found no solutions for this specific problem. Some have speculated it may be because they didn't have factory installed HDD, but I've swapped nothing out from how it came shrink-wrapped. Any suggestions?

HELP! So we recently purchased an X240 for a user and it's been nothing but issues. Shortly have installing the applications he needed, the machine has been having this weird problem of unresponsiveness for no reason. You'd start up Excel and then shortly after that the machine just "pauses" for many seconds before the mouse moves again. Anyway, after trying to figure out the cause I gave up and decided to restore the machine to its factory settings. Problem is, pressing F11 and booting into recovery the process stops about 1/8th of the way and says "Recovery failed." Does anyone know what this means exactly under all of this GUI interface? There's no details as to what or where it failed. I've even created a USB recovery disk to restore from, but it bombs out at the same place... I've asked Lenovo to send me recovery disks, but that's going to take time to receive and guess what... it's coming as a DVD when this machine has no DVD drive! HELP!

I put the CD in to restore the T42p laptop (2373-ktu)and it crashed. Now each time I try to start up it hangs on the loading bar at the bottom of the screen and it reads "Please wait..." this stays there forever. Is there any way I can delete the previous crashed install and move forward with the recovery. I tried it with the CD in and out but neither works.I was also trying the F11 approach to restore from the hidden partition but that did not work either.Any suggestions?

Answer:Failed Rescue and Recovery

247prods, welcome to the forum,

I would suggest running Hitachi Drive Fitness Test from bootable cd, therefore testing both drives at once. It maybe that a corrupted hard drive is the cause of your problems?
If everything is OK, disable the Pre-desktop area in BIOS (Security > IBM Pre-desktop area) and  run Secure Data Disposal at its lowest level without writing reports to disc, this will remove everything from the hard drive. Then try the recovery cds again.

Hi. I had a hardisk failure on a T42.  I bought a new (IDE) hardisk and ordered the Rescue and Recovery CDs from IBM.I got the CDs, but when I try to restore the system to its original setting - restore factory contents -(following the instructions that came with the CDs).  The recovery process stops right after step 8.  (accept the terms and conditions).  In reality it starts to copy some files and then it stops and display the following message.I get an error message stating:There was an error during initialization. Therefore It does not even let me go further than the Startup disk of the rescue and recovery CD set.Any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi,I have a T60p 8743 CTO with Vista Business. I upgraded 2gb to 4GB and 100GB HDD to 500 GB.The process I did was, to replace the old HDD with the new one. Used recovery disks to load the vista on to new HDD. Then loaded the latest backup from old HDD. I assumed that I got all the functionality of think vantage tools in new HDD too. Now, I was planning to load Linux OS. So when I tried to create a back up using rescue and recovery I was not able get it done. Could you please suggest me if there was a mistake in above procedure. How to troubleshoot the current problem?Could I make a partition and load Linux with out problem? I need Linux for my research purpose. I appreciate your help. Thanks in advance. SincerelyYogi

Answer:Backup through Rescue Recovery failed after HDD upgrade

it might be when you put the backup on the new HDD the backup also put the backup back on the new HDD so the change in HDD GB might have it messed up you may have to delete the old backups and start over

I recently (beginning of February) purchased the above laptop, after saving up for some time...I had 4 weeks problem-free use from it and then, about four weeks ago, one morning it wouldn't start up... it went into a loop of booting up ok  until the windows XP screen came up, then going into restart and going through the same pattern again.I phoned the 30 day support phone line ( I think it was a little over the 30 days) and the technical support chap told me it sounded like a problem with windows. he told me to take the hard drive out, put it in a USB caddy so I coud save all my school  data (I'm a primary shool teacher) and then send for the restore to factory settings discs.... not having access to a usb caddy drive and not being able to afford to buy one, I phoned the support centre to ask them to send me the factory settings discs... these finally arrived last friday.I was able to recover my files which were on the hard drive, along with my son's A level course work,  and proceded to follow the instructions for the other 6 discs... the computer copied all the discs but whe it had got to disk 6 it switched back to the blue error screen which had a load of error message stuff on it... nothing else happened, the factory settings were not installed and the laptop now just boots to a black screen which says 'NTLDR is missing, press ctrl alt del to restart'anyone know what the problem is?...it's been nearly a month now that I haven't been able to use it and I'm ... sorry to hear about your problem. A little more information might be helpfull here.
were you informed about how the Lenovo care button works and had you tried to use it's function?
did the "crash" occur while disk 6 was still copying or after it had finished?
does disk 6 look dirty or damaged in any way and can you read it in the other computer?
do you have access to an USB floppy drive? (should one be required - don't know yet)

are you able to excuse my grammar, it's a long time since I was in school?

Hi, Nimvoker

Exactly which method are you using to attempt to recover your system? Also, I am unfamiliar with the term "cbd_drive." Could you possibly explain what you mean by this?

Thanks in advance,

This is the error message I get when I try to restore XP on my T42P. Have replaced the harddrive and bought recovery CDs to restore the system onto the new drive (a 160 GB IDE drive made by Samsung). The first part of the recovery procedure works ok, I was asked to insert the disks 1 - 7, one after the other and contents were copied. At the end came a message telling that the system needed to restart to continue the recovery process. After the reboot I had to again accept the license terms, and then a window came up, with the text "Recovering your system, this may take several minutes..." and with a "Total progress" bar at the bottom. However, only seconds later a message box came up, telling "IBM Product Recovery failed to restore your system". Tried the whole process a second time, same result. Then used regular Windows XP Professional installation disk. With this the installation worked without any problem, but of course without the, but of course without the special Rescue and Recovery partition. Thought that maybe after the successful installation with the regular installation disk, the installation with the IBM Recovery Disks might work as well. Tried again - and it failed again. My impression is that my T42p hardware is ok and that these Recovery CDs do not work as they should. I'm somewhat unhappy with this situation. Lenovo charged me for recovery disks and now they don't even work... Anyone have an idea why this... Read more

I've got an IBM T42 Thinkpad; had it for about 6 years and it's done me proud. Any time I got a serious virus I would just hit the blue "Access IBM" button on startup, and run a factory reset. Brilliant. I got a virus recently and decided to do a factory reset today. However, when I tried to do it this time I got the error message "IBM Product Recovery Failed to Restore Your System" shortly after it started. I don't have the recovery CDs and I don't know what to do. Can anyone help?

Hello mate, You can buy the recovery cds from Lenovo, or you can download a windows cd and install it and then download the drivers from the Lenovo website.

Bought Lenovo Product Recovery CD for X31 2672 from Lenovo. Worked fine on a completely wiped clean drive, sort of. I have full Recovery of Access IBM and XP Pro. However, when connecting to cable modem router i get no internet connection. I know the connection is hot as I have a R51 Thinkpad now using the net connection just fine. Won't connect to net. When I attempt to repair internet connection I get an error that reads: "Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed."  XP Pro that was installed is, I believe old 2002 without SP's. I cannot connect to MS site to update. Any ideas on how to get my restored X31 2672 to connect to the internet so I can start updating XP Pro? I have Googled and found multiple off the beaten path suggestions, but don't want to try anything until I hear from X series users here. Thanks for any help! UpinAK

A bit more digging and I have discovered there are yellow exclamation points and question marks in the device manager for Ethernet Controller and Network Controller along with a few more, USB, Multimedia and Video in my device manager. I have downloaded and tried multiple Intel pro/100 drivers from the Lenovo site, all with no joy. They copy the files, I reboot and I'm back with the same situation of not having the system seeing there is an Ethernet Controller because there are no drivers. The device manager shows the ethernet controller at PCI Bus 2, device 8 function 0, but no drivers installed. What specific intel ethernet controller does this old X31 have anyway?? Any ideas??? Thanks!!

I've tried using the recovery discs but it just goes to 'recovery is complete' after going to a black screen. However, nothing was done. Previously, it would take some time to load and ask for the other 8 discs to be inserted sequentialy. Can anyone advice me on of how i can recover my hdd back to factory default settings. I've tried reformatting using an xp retail cd and reformatting as an ext hdd  followed by the usageof these discs but the results remain the same.  thanks

Hello, after replacing a damaged hard drive with a new one I could not locate the product key information.  I told the owner of the laptop to purchase the recovery disk from HP which she did. When I tried to install with the new recovery disk I received a message stating "recovery failed" when installing the recovery software to the hard drive. How can I retrieve the product ID key for this laptop also the recovery disk that she purchased did not work is there an update to this issue any help will be greatly appreciated thank you so much. Answer:Recovery Failed issue and Lost Product Key

Hello, Welcome to the HP Support forum. Please, refer to these official articles about troubleshooting recovery process failures: > http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04942983  (Win 10)> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03483233  (Win 8) Read them both and follow the advice based on the specific error the user of the PC received. PCs with Windows 8 , 8.1 and 10 do not ship with product key available for the users. It does not have COE sticker like Windows XP, Vista or 7 used to have > http://www.cnet.com/news/windows-8-moves-to-bios-based-product-keys/What you ask for is officially not supported. For the recovery discs to work:- ensure the new HDD is working and correctly installed- no other major hardware changes have been performed- new HDD must with the very same size (or bigger in size) as the original HDD - smaller HDD or SSD (smaller in capacity) will not work- check with HP or the vendor you received the media from if they sent you the correct version of the discs/media for the correct PC model.

Hi there people. First post so sorry if it's in the wrong place or anything. I've had as much of a search as I can and haven't found anyone with quite the same situation as me. The questions come at the end of the rambling background to my problem!!! Hope you can make it through to the end! My E520 recently just went beyond it's warranty and surprise surprise fairly soon after that I got a warning through ThinkVantage that there was a problem with my internal hard drive. When I googled the problem it said that the hard drive was going to fail and to replace it immediately.  As I (like an idiot) hadn't got round to backing up my computer properly (I'd saved all music, photos and videos to a seperate hard drive but hadn't done a Rescue and Recovery or Windows back up) I went out and bought a seperate hard drive to back up the computer and some disks to create the recovery boot disks.  When I went to the Q drive to do this I misunderstood the question about do I want to create a data back up disk. I thought this meant all my media so I said no and created just the boot recovery disks.  So my question (told you I'd get there) is this. When I replace the internal hard drive and use the boot disks to install windows will I then be able to use the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery to restore my computer to it's former glory? Or will the fact that I'm not restoring the Lenovo skin (sorry if my terminology is wrong here. Not sure what to call it) ... Read more

I recently created Recovery Discs in Windows XP, but when I insert Disc 2, it always says that it is the incorrect disc so I cannot continue the factory restore. Now I'm trying to restore by booting into the Rescue and Recovery on my hard drive, but it cannot find the hidden factory partition on the hd. It also now says that the restore had a "convertion" error when it wouldn't recognize disc 2 and will not let me try to look at my hard drive to restore anymore. If I use the RR boot disc, it will let me try to restore, but it finds nothing restorable on the HD.I did look at the hard drive and see 2 partitions with one being a IBM_SERVICE partition with 3.9GB total size and 2.9GB free space. Please help, thanks.

I am doing a fresh install in the following rather than cloning because the system has not been reinstalled for 4yrs.  From an external usb CD drive (internal drive removed) I installed the recovery disks onto a 160GB Samsung HM160HC PATA drive with no problem .  Then clicked the restart button.  My T42 booted right back into the opening page of the Rescue and Recovery routine.  On restarting again I used F12 to get the list of drives and selected the Samsung HDD.  This did not help.  Have repeated startup numerous times.  The computer could not be looking at any other drive because the Samsung is the only one connected.  I am tempted to download Lenovo's available BIOS update while logged-in with the old 30GB drive regardless of the fact that my  Embedded Controller Program is ver 3.04 and supposed to be suitable for the 160GB drive upgrade.  If anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

Answer:T42 HDD upgrade- Recovery disks install but hard drive only boots to Rescue and Recovery routine.

Welcome to the forum!

Wipe the hard drive clean.

Boot from the first (Rescue & Recovery CD) and follow the prompts. You'll have 7 more CDs to go through (5 for the earlier version).

Once the process is complete, the machine will instruct you to remove the final CD and reboot. At that point, you should be able to boot from the hard drive with no interaction required.

Good luck.

You can either get a hold of Vista installation disks and install it manually, or call Lenovo support and ask for recovery disks. They may charge you for the disks as you are supposed to create your own recovery disks.

Hello. After 6 months of hating Vista and running XP as as a virtual PC I decided to give up and downgrade to XP. I paid for the Rescue & Recovery CD set which comes with the Product Recovery CDs. I followed the instructions precisely and ran the Restore factory contents. It seemed to load successfully from all 6 discs and the Supplemental disc. Then when the Product Recovery process started, it got part-way through and stopped with the message "Product Recovery failed to restore your system". That's it...no way out. I reinstalled and got the same result. Called Lenovo support and they won't help unless I cough up another $99!Thanks in advance for any help.My T61 product code: 6465CTO

Answer:T61 Vista-to-XP Downgrade: Product Recovery failed to restore your system

I suppose it's possible you have a bad recovery CD, but perhaps try your own reformat of the HD first  before booting with the Recovery CD and restoring.   The recovery process should do this anyway.  I'm assuming Vista is now gone and the machine isn't booting, otherwise the recovery process didn't get very far,

After I did a clean install of Win10 about a year ago, I created a USB Recovery Drive. I also have a Norton Security Recovery Drive and I?ve created USB Bootable PE Rescue Disk by Kyhi. I also use Acronis to create regular full disk images and I have a USB Bootable Acronis Rescue Drive.

With the USB Recovery Drive and the USB Bootable PE Rescue Disk by Kyhi, do I still need to keep the Recovery Partition that Win10 created when I did the original install? Are the files in that partition used by the system to create the USB Recovery Drive?

Also out of curiosity I executed the ?reagentc/info? command and I see that the Windows RE status is disabled. Did creating the USB Recovery Drive do that or is something else going on? If I keep the recovery partition then do I need to re-enable it and if so how do I do that?

Answer:Recovery Drive vs Recovery Partition vs PE Rescue Disk, confused.

Hi, you don't need the manufacturer's recovery partition unless you planned to restore the PC to as bought e.g. to sell it on.
You could create a disk image of it and save it on an external disk, then delete it from your PC.

Windows RE: Suggests you have a corrupt or missing partition - System Reserved. Note that Disk Management does not show this 16Mb partition. You need a 3rd party partition manager to see it.

See this (lots of technical detail):
Just a moment...

And do a couple of checks to see if it really is missing.

Hopefully someone assist: I have a z61t running XPPro The Recovery CDs (7 discs) were not recognized by the Rescue and Recovery program. It tells me to insert the Last Disc in the series, but nothing is recognized from all the CDs. I performed CD boot from the first Recovery CD; was prompted to insert the last disc but nothing is recognized. How would I go about restoring my system to factory settings, since the created Recovery CDs seem to be useless. Any suggestions?

Hello, I never created recovery disks when I purchased my T60 over three years ago.  I regret that. Now I am wondering if it is possible to do so.  When I launch Create Recover Media (rrmedia.exe), it crashes immediately:AppName: rrmedia.exeAppVer: 1.0.0.1ModName: unknownModVer: 0.0.0.0Offset: 0018089aEventID: 1000 I cannot request recovery disks from Lenovo, because my system is out of warranty now. So I think it is either it is impossible to use rrmedia.exe at this point (since in the meantime, I've upgraded to XP SP3, etc) or I need to upgrade or reinstall Rescue and Recovery.  However, trying the latter opens up a can of worms: 1) Rescue and Recovery shows version 3.01.0037.  Running system update to patch to 3.01.0042 fails: "A later version of 'Rescue and Recovery - Client Security Solution' is already installed on this machine.  The setup cannot continue." 2) When I try to uninstall RR from Add/Remove programs, it fails: "Another version of this product is already installed.  Installation of this version cannot continue.  To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel" 3) When I try to upgrade to the latest 4.xx, it says I must first uninstall the current version, which from the above, I cannot do. So the machine is confused as to which version it has, and it won't let me upgrade, uninstall, or reinstall. In summary:&... Today I was investigating something in ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery since one of my attempts to create a set of recovery discs had gone wrong - I created a Rescue Disc (boot disk) instead of a set of Recovery Disks. Basically, what I discovered is that according to this IBM page http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-68317.html I am supposed to see two options when clicking "Create Recovery Media" in the ThinkVantage start menu group: (1) Rescue Media and (2) Recovery Discs. In the event that a set of Recovery Discs (option 2) has already been created, this option will become gray and can't be selected, however it will still be visible, displaying the text that you've already created a set of Recovery Discs and that your license doesn't allow you to make any more. The strange thing here is that I don't at all have option 2: Recovery Discs, whether active or inactive (gray)! Please find attached the three relevant screenshots: the last one is of my computer (and is in Dutch but shows you that I have only option 1 to select), the bottom two are from the link I provided above and show the distinction between having option 2 active or inactive (gray text). Does anyone know what is going on here? And will this entitle me to a complimentary (in effect, free) set of Resovery Disks from IBM Support (taking into account my warranty has expired)?  I've got an R50p running Windows XP Pro (1832-W1D). [IMG]http://i38.tinypic.com/2r3w1ts.jpg[/IM...  I have gone to restore my laptop to Factory setting but in the rescue and recovery application i do not have any option to recover to the laptop as it came out the factory. When i got the laptop i created rescue media and have a set of 4 disks, All DVD(2 are 8.5GB). The R&R  boots and asks for the Final C disk. None of the disks display in the backup listbox. Before i went for a fresh install using a Windows 7 disk, i got R&R to off load media to a portable drive. This will boot to a different version of R&R similar to the post 2008 walkthrough. But the screen i get does not have the radio button for Factory restore, just the backup and when i put my DVD's in, no backup is found from the media i have... I removed the factory partition after i created the media as i presumed i could get back to the factory using them. My fresh install of windows 7 works but downloading the wireless driver from Lenovo doesn't activate... wish i never started to mess with it now.... Any suggestions???

I'll be upgrading my T520 from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (clean install) and want to create a full, restorable backup of my system first. I'm confused about just which method to go with.  In Control panel, there is a "Lenovo-Factory recovery disks".  And then there is also Rescue & Recovery, which I just installed.  From the online instructions, it looks like with R&R, I can select either the OS and/or Data.  If I select OS, is this the same as running the Control panel item, Factory recovery disks?? I will probably create the OS backup media separate from the Data media anyway, since I want to copy the data over to my clean install of Windows 8. Thanks!

Answer:Use "Factory recovery disks" or "Rescue & recovery"?

The Recovery Disks are a must have do burn them to DVD's (3 - DVD are burnt). These 3 DVD allow you to reinstall the the Windows 7, tools drivers etc to the state it came from the factory. It becomes clean start as you originally got it. They maybe also used to boot into for the repair console but I am not certain as I haven't tried it myself. Now having said that which should be clear. You want an IMAGE of the DRIVE which includes 3 partitions. One is no good since Lenovo boots via Rapidstart via "System_Drv" partition. If you look in Disk Management you'll see that is the active boot partition. You need it and the Windows partitions a minimum. But that leave the Q drive omitted. Few people take into account that even though they have a backup of the HD they DON'T have the means to read it to put it back. Its fine if you just going to over write a working system from the backup but not it the application or tools are missing. Acronis Trueimage is OS independent and allow for a Boot CD to be made for those situation in which you can restore a HD, a partition or even folder and files from the same backup. This is what you'd want or something equivalent and 100% that you'll have access to it afterwards. I doubt you'd be able to easily do all this will R&R  and there is no way to verify that in advance. Many time the backup is no good and you're SOL. Trueimage can verify the image file created that its good if you which so you know. You can create as many imag... Read more

Hi, I want to try new Windows 7 on my T61 (7659-A55). so i tried to make product recovery discs, but it gives me error that process is failed. (Cannot go back to the factory setting right now...) My CD/DVD RW works fine and i even tried to use differen version of Rescue and Recovery.. How can I get the recovery discs??

Answer:Can't burn recovery disc.. using Rescue and Recovery

Hi, I've heard that RnR can allow user to make only one copy of factoty preload recovery disks. If you have made one, this function is no more available. But you can make  backups for the current status of your computer. Use RnR and choose to make backups, then choose to store the backup to CD/DVD. It will prompt you to burn a bootable CD/DVD, then a data DVD. To make sure, I suggest you should use the burned CD/DVD to recover your system to see it works before you try installing Win 7 for it may delete your hidden recovery partition for good. Good luck, NormMessage Edited by normyy on 06-01-2009 06:58 PM

Hi All, Okay, I have been spinning my head, I have an OEM version of the Rescue and Recovery and Product Recovery disk from IBM, since the T43 that I got from someone, was wiped with a messed up XP loaded onto it.  Thus, I figure that I was restore the T43 back to factory condition. However when I have run thru disk 1-7, I get this dreaded message 'IBM Product Recovery Failure During the Convertion Phase'. Any one have any suggestions as I have run it three times and all loaded up until after the 7th disk, I get this error message when the system reboots after loading the final disk. I rather try to keep it Factory OEM, but I'm thinking, myabe I should just re-install XP on a reformated HDD, but more of a hassle to try to reload all the drivers and maybe some missing DLL files too... Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Now my message says " IBM Product Recovery Failed to restore your system" ....so what next??? I am at a lost and I really don't want to re-load Win XP directly.

I would greatly appreciate advice on the following.

My Sat Pro M70-220 (PSM75E-00D008G3), laptop has 4 partitions created by Acronis Disk Director Suit v9:

C: OS-Win XP Pro SP3
D: Programs
E: Data& Downloads
F: Backups

After booting the laptop into Win XP, I inserted the Toshiba Product Recovery CD into the DVD-RAM drive
and navigated to BMP folder, R:\G_INST\BMP, where I found the file "menu.bmp" which gives 2 Recovery
options:

*1. Recover entire Hard disk*
Warning . All stored data o your computer will be lost.
Factory pre-installed software will be installed.

*2. Expert Recovery Mode Warning:*
This is for PC experts only.
Factory pre-installed Software can be installed onto an existing partition.

My questions are with respect to using the "Expert Recovery Mode" :
- will I be able to use the "Expert Recovery Mode" of the Recovery CD to reinstall the Win XP Pro (factory pre-installed software) onto my C: partition, whilst not affecting the D, E & F partitions ?
- will I be able to format the C: partition, using the "Expert Recovery Mode", without formatting the other partitions ?
- what is the exact "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
- where can I find further info on the "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?

Thank you

Answer:Re: Using Expert Recovery Mode in Product Recovery CD for Satellite Pro M70-220

>will I be able to use the "Expert Recovery Mode" of the Recovery CD to reinstall the Win XP Pro (factory pre-installed software) onto my C: partition, whilst not affecting the D, E & F partitions

Yes, this should be possible. Using the Expert Recovery Mode you should get the Ghost window in which you could select the partition where the OS should be installed. In such case only this partition would be formatted.

> will I be able to format the C: partition, using the "Expert Recovery Mode", without formatting the other partitions?

Yes, theoretically this should be possible.

> what is the exact "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
As I mentioned above, this mode allows you to restore the OS on a certain partition and only this partition will be formatted.

> where can I find further info on the "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
How about searching here in the forum?

Hi, Three days of struggling to clean an infected Thinkpad so I am ready for drastic action. Wife's  T60 2007-43U rendered useless by ramnit virus. Long story, but reformat seems like only solution. Have T60 2008-SAA with as-built installation, and expect I can make  Product Recovery discs for that machine. Also have T60P 2007-8JU working fine, but with no recovery partition or great Thinkpad utilities,Sonic or WinDVD as reformat by previous owner deleted them. All three computers have XP Pro with SP-3. Questions:1. Can self-made Product Recovery Disc from one Thinkpad be used to reinstall factory load on these others?2. If so, should doing that completely clean the disk of existing virus and leave it in "new" condition?3. Understand 6 CD's make up the factory set of Recovery Discs. The  as built load is about 10GB! Is there a list somewhere of what all is included in the Recovery?  Before I start making these discs, should I expect a total of 6, more, or fewer? Thanks!

Answer:Use Product Recovery Disc on different Thinkpad for virus recovery?

1) Yes

2) You should wipe the drive with DBAN or something along those lines first.

3) The set will have a total of 7 or 8 disks altogether...Rescue & Recovery + 6 CDs + possibly supplemental CD

Good luck.

Question: Z61m Recovery

I tried to recover my Z61m (9450-D9U) using Rescue and Recovery. First, I tried recovering to the factory state, but it said it received a "system error" on the last CD. Then, I tried using the WindowsXP installation disk, but it said that it couldn't find an installed hard drive. Then I tried recovering it using the set of CDs that I had last used to perform a full Rescue&Recovery backup. That finished OK, but then when it went to boot from the hard drive it said that it couldn't find "hal.dll". Does anyone have any suggestions before I call Lenovo? You've got to wipe the drive clean and start fresh.

Erase the contents of the hard drive with dBan or something along those lines (PC Doctor for DOS bootable CD offers this option as well).

Choose media drive as a temporary booting device and start fresh.

Hello, this is my first time using a community forum, so apologies for not knowing the protocols. I have a Lenovo X121e ThinkPad, which is unfortunately 5 days out of warranty. It is pre-installed with Windows 7, but there is a problem starting Windows, so the only option available is the Startup Repair, which searches for (and attempts to repair) problems. Unfortunately, the repair is unsuccessful but the root cause is found:        Boot sector for system disk partition is corrupt. This only leaves the option to perform a product recovery. When I choose this option, the files are not found, probably because I no longer have the "Q Drive" partition - some months ago I followed the instructions to create a (USB) recovery media and release the space on the hard disk. I therefore have a USB stick called 'cbd_drive' which contains the following in the root directory: Boot [folder]factoryrecovery [folder]usb.tagwinRE.wim I assumed that I could boot from this USB drive to run the Lenovo Product Recovery so I changed the boot sequence to use USB HDD but I receive an "Error loading operating system" message. Now I'm at a loss as to what I should do next, so appreciate any advice from the community. Thank you!

Answer:X121e - Product Recovery using USB Recovery Media

Hello and welcome,

Did you use this procedure to prepare your flash drive?

New or used USB memory keys or USB flash drives require an active partition created from within Wind...

If not you may be able to fix things by setting the  partition active.  Don't clean, create, or format, just select and set active.

If the stick is formatted incorrectly (FAT32 instead of NTFS) you can try this:  prepare a 2nd flash drive per the above instructions and copy the contents of the first drive to it.

I can't say for sure that flash prep is the problem but may be worth a try.

I'm trying to restore my laptop to factory settings, but nothing seems to be going right. When I interrupt startup with the Thinkpad button, there is no "Restore your system" option as the Service and Troubleshooting Guide claims.  I read elsewhere that this option can also be accessed by pressing F11, but this has no effect on my system. I'm fairly certain the partition still exists.  My visible hard drive partitions account for just about 74.5 gigs.  I can't find my specific system's specs, but IBM's website leads me to believe that it should be an 80 gig hard drive.  However, I temporarily disabled "IBM Predesktop Area" in the bios as I heard this would allow me to see the partition, and nothing new showed up in Windows Disk Management. I can occasionally access the Thinkpad Rescue and Recovery app, but I have never previously made a backup using that program and there doesn't seem to be a way to use the recovery partition.  Whenever I click on "Create Recovery Media" in the start menu, the program immediately crashes. My system is out of warranty, so I'm not sure if acquiring recovery media from Lenovo is an option.  I can see on-disk recovery being convenient (if it works), but why on earth didn't they also include a disk? Anyway, thanks for any help you can give me,BartoHP Edit:  I did a quick scan of the first page before posting, but somehow missed this http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id... My two-year old Satellite C75-A-14X suffered a major hard drive crash a few weeks ago. My data has been backed up, but I've been unable to repair my PC, and as I hadn't created any recovery media, I bought a system recovery USB stick from Toshiba. I received the USB stick today and attempted to restore my laptop to its factory default settings. I left my laptop to perform the recovery for about an hour or so. When I returned, the screen said that there was an error (I didn't make a note of the error code) and the recovery had failed. Now, when I restart my laptop I get a blue screen with the following text:

"Recovery

Your PC needs to be repaired

A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.

Error code: 0xc000000f

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Press Enter to try again
Press F8 for Startup Settings
Press Esc for UEFI Firmware Settings"

When I press Enter or F8, my laptop remains on the blue screen with the above text. Pressing Esc is the only option at this screen that works. How can I re-attempt restoring factory settings from the recovery USB stick?

Hey Folks, So I'm in a rut. I'm working on my boss' laptop and he has a Thinkpad z61m from several years ago. The thing is on its last gasp and he wants me to clean it up so he can send it to a relative to use. I figure, restoring it to Factory State would be perfect. After I copied all of the data we needed to an external drive, I'm all set. I attempt to use Rescue and Recovery in the Pre-Boot stage but it says that option had been removed. Very odd, so I scour these forums a bit... attempt to uninstall and re-install RnR in Windows, and the issue is the same. Then I recalled something...About two years ago, the thing had some major issues and my boss sent it in to one of those repair places. They wiped the sucker clean, moved everything to an external, and sent it back. It worked fine and I didn't doubt their handiwork. But now I noticed... the partition was gone. Just... gone. They must have wiped all of the parititions and created a new one which now sits the XP installation I'm on right now. However... I have the original partition backed up on the external in a directory. I figure the easiest thing to do was to use the new RnR feature of creating your own Rescue Media... but the Product Recovery Disc option isn't available anymore (and I have no idea where the discs are, lost in time for good it seems). So... my question is how would I go about recreating the partition... is this even possible? Or else I'm sort of screwed! Ahh! An... Read more

Im attempting to do a full factory restore on my T420. Im able to boot up with the recovery media and use FR disk 1 to get to the point of copying the file \recovery.ini. The Overall Progress bar shows a little under half way. At this point the system asks for FR Disk 2. The option to burn this disk when creating the media was not present and the create recovery media ended successfully while burning only the 2 disks (boot disk and FR disk 1). Ive done factory restores on tons of T500's and x220's for work and typically when you get to this point you can select NO when prompted for disk 2 and recovery continues and finishes successfully since disk 2 contains elements not essential to the factory restore. Ive clicked NO and it goes back to the recovery progress window...... and just sits there. No error messages, the system is not locked up, but no HD activity, no progress meter movement and the optical drive is silent. Ive never seen a recovery like this. Ive waited for an hour or so with no activity. No error messages... but no activity. All the buttons at the bottom are grayed since its in the middle of the process so the only option is to wait..... Anyone else ran into this?

Answer:Product recovery hangs at recovery.ini

Hi enforcer,

I don't have anything useful to suggest - except this one random thought.  Can you minimize the window when the install is "hanging"? (sorry, I don't recall if this is even possible during a restore...)  I've seen a few cases when a popup window pops up _behind_ the main window.  You can't see the popup to click "done" or whatever, and the main window is locked until you do.

Just tossing *stuff* at the wall,
Z.

Hi everyone, I have a T61 with a hard drive that won't boot.I ran the hard drive diagnostics and got the 0000 Read Error.I also ran Seagates SeaTool software from Dos and confirmed hard drive failure. This is the 2nd time within a year that a hard drive has died in this machine, so I'm thinking about a new laptop. But I would like to recover my data from my hard drive if possible. I hit the Blue ThinkVantage button at start up but don't have the Rescue and Recovery option ... I guess it was never installed after the first time I had to replace my drive (I also upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 at this time). Is there a (free) way to recover my data without being able to boot to WIndows? Or am I SOL? Thanks!

My rescue and recovery stopped working. I cannot backup at all. It just sets at zero completion. Doesn't work as scheduled or manually. Also when I try to cancel, it won't. I have to use task manager to close it. Then when I try to open the program it won't open. repairing will not work. It has to be uninstalled and then installed to even open the it.

Hi, I have Lenovo R61 laptop with pre-installed Windows Vista Business OS. When I bought it, there were only Rescue and Recovery disks for downgrading Windows Vista to Windows XP in the package, no Windows Vista disks. Now I need these disks to move OS with all installed software to a new HDD. I know that Lenovo's laptops have special partition in HDD with OS image and some other software pre-installed at the factory and this can be used to create required Rescue and Recovery disks using Rescue & Recovery utility from ThinkVantage package. For some reason, I don't have this utility on my laptop. Another problem is how blue 'ThinkVantage' button works during the boot. When I press it, it prints that Windows files are loading and then shows Rescue and Recovery splash screen. No buttons, no menus. After some time waiting, Product Recovery dialog is shown that suggests choosing between two options: - Full recovery to factory settings- Selective recovery None of these suits me, since I don't want to change anything in my HDD. If I press 'Cancel' button on this dialog, it disappears and my laptop reboots. I even cannot get to BIOS in the way described in User's Manual. (After playing a bit with 'Delete' button that I was repeatedly clicking after 'ThinkVantage' button was pressed, I finally managed to start BIOS Configuration Utility, but I doubt it is how this should work.) Have anyone any idea about how to get to other Rescue and Recovery co... When I created recovery disks, and each time I create backup disks, ThinkVantage makes a "Rescue & Recovery" CD followed by a DVD.  Are these Rescue & Recovery CDs always the same?  If so, I would like to keep only one of them along with the backup DVDs.Thanks,Faz

Answer:Rescue & Recovery CD ??

Recovery Media is the same, which contains the operating systems and drivers. While Rescue and Recovery cds should be the backup of your system, so each set of these R & R cd/dvd are the newer version of your backup. It is up to you which backup you keep.

Myself and another friend have been working on this R61i for about two weeks now.   History is it needed a larger HD.  Old hd was cloned onto the the new HD.  I am not sure what program was used.  Worked pretty well but was so infected we decided to just start from scratch.  Ordered the CD's from lenvo and started trying to load them tonight.  Loading Vista home and it reads all 3 cd's.  Reboots, the little loading window symbol starts and then it works a little bit more and then it ways "windows cannot configure this computer to run windows".  I don't have a clue. Any ideas? George

How long does a rescue and recovery take putting back the computer the way it was from the factory when first bought. The one I am working on took and hour and a half.  After this reinstall there was 88 processes running at 900mb but then went down to about 650mb.  Hard drive light seems to be running furiously. Opening  programs takes along time . The same goes for installation of software.  Testing of ram shows no problems, test on hard drive shows it is working properly , but it is 3 years old and could be failing.Does anyone know what could be the problemsystem is thinkpadR61i   1.4 GHz core 2 duo CPU 2gb ram 120gb HDD Windows Vista home premium

Answer:Rescue and recovery

Hi grassman0707 and welcome to the forum,

Open task manager and see what's running.  It sounds like something is working the processor pretty hard.

Did you install Vista's service packs yet?  I know Vista runs pretty slow until the service packs and updates get installed.

Run Thinkvantage System Update and update the drivers and Thinkvantage programs.  You'll need Microsoft net.framework installed for system update to work.  3.5 sp1 is what worked for me, there were some problems with 4.0, but I think that's fixed now.

An hour and a half to restore Vista is probably close. 88 processes is about normal. The last machine and os I restored was xp tablet and it had 78 processes when I got done with it and it took about an hour.

HiI have been trying to reinstall windows xp on said machine. First I tried to use an ordinary XP-cd, that I had from another machine. Installation. It gives various troubles, which are driver-related (I think). I reciently aquired a G40.  It came with a set of R&R disks but disk 4 is corrupt.   The R&R partition is still there and I can view the files with a live LINUX disk.  However, the F11 restore function is not available. I tried the recovery repair disk made with rrdisk in the IBM tools directory and it tells me that function is restored sucessfully however that still did not work.  Is there an other way to restore the F11?What file does the F11 use to trigger the R&R?When the R&R disks are made the option to make another set is no longer available,  is there a way to restore that ability.Does anyone know what is on the disk 4 of the R&R set?

No clue on the contents of the disk 4, but the bottom line is that you need a working set of CDs to restore the machine.

Hello all, I'm going to upgrade the HDDs in a Z60m and a T60. The plan was to install the OS from the restore disks and then update the drivers and replace files from manually made backups. However I thought it would also be a good idea to create backups using Rescue and Recovery, which I've never used. As it might be easier than putting all the files back manually. So I thought I'd try it out. When I tried to copy the Base backup from the Z60m onto a USB drive I got a message asking if I wanted to make it bootable. My question is should I? Is that how it works. Do I: Make a bootable backupInstall the new hard drive.Restore the factory image. Then boot from the external 'base' backup. Or once I've loaded the factory image would Rescue and Recovery be able find the backup on a non bootable USB drive? To be honest I don't actually know what the base backup will restore anyway. Does it restore all the drivers, programe files and other files that were present when the back up was made, in theory? It would save a lot of time if it does! I hope that makes sense Thank you for your help.

Answer:Rescue and recovery

Hi furyan,

First, as to making a USB drive bootable.  That's how I do it - it just makes it simpler to do a restore.  WARNING: some versions of R&R will format the external drive before installing the bootable stuff - without first asking.  You will lose any data that you have on the drive.  Other versions are more polite, but if you don't see a "preserve" checkbox, be sure you don't have anything important already on the drive.

As far as your procedure questions:  If you have a bootable external drive with a backup image on it, you just install your new HD in the laptop, boot the external drive, and restore.  Done.  No need to first restore the factory image first.  Restoring a saved image can be a  one-step process.  You could run restore from within Windows, or from some other bootable media - CD, for instance - but it isn't necessary.

As to "base" and "factory" images - those are different things.  The factory image (recovery image, IIRC) will restore your machine to the exact state in which it was shipped.  No user, no additional software, nada.

A base image is R&R's term for a full backup of your machine in its present state (user(s), additional software, everything) at the time you make the backup.  It's called "base" because later backups are incremental additions to the base.  They contain only the differences between the base and the state of the machine when th... Hi all,I've just purchased my first thinkpad - a refurbished T42. It's nice!I'm preparing to wipe the whole drive and install linux and decided to make a set of rescue & recovery discs. I used the IBM utility, which created the following:- 1 disc: ibm rescue & recovery with rapid restore- 6 discs: ibm product recoveryI decided to test it just for fun and was dismayed, upon pressing "restore factory contents", to be greeted by the following:The IBM Product Recovery function has been removed from this system.wtf? The BIOS setting for the recovery partition is "Normal" (as opposed to disabled, or password-protected)...and when I looked at the partition, it looked like a normal FAT32 partition with about 4 gigs of files.So... what to do? Should I back up the active windows partition (as opposed to the rescue partition) before deleting windows? Thanks!~David.

Answer:T42 rescue & recovery

It sure wouldn't hurt to backup the IBMTOOLS folder as it has most of the Thinkpad specific stuff in it. If you boot to the recovery set you made it should wipe the hard drive, re-create the recovery partition and then restore the windows partition from the recovery partition. Then you will have a factory fresh installation. Be sure to backup any personal data before doing this as it will be lost after the procedure is complete.

Hello every one, I'm a layman of IT& computer.  I was trying to restore my T61 (6457 CTO, Vista) by using the Rescue & Recovery disc (3 DVD disc got from Lenovo last year within my T61 warranty period).  When I boot computer by the recovery disc and, put operating system and applications & drivers recovery disc in (as requested), I was asked for Supplemental Recovery Disc which I don't have.  If I answered no supplemental recovery disc, trying to skip the processing, and the entire rescue & recovery could close, but not completed, and computer will not work.  Could you please help me to solve the problem,  either make me have the supplemental disc/substitute disc, or use other ways to make it work. Thank you so much in advance.

Answer:Need your help to rescue & recovery T61

Personally I don't use the factory Install discs, I install windows from a microsoft disc, then install only the drivers I need to make the lenovo hardware work. A lot of what comes on all major brand computers is free limited versions of commercial products, and quite frankly, there are better freeware programs you can get. That was somewhat of a disclaimer in case what I tell you is wrong, but I'm pretty sure the "sublimental" disc it wants is just the next disc in the (3 disc set) you got from lenovo. Just insert the next disc and continue.

Hello, I have a T61 and just purchased a 320gig 7200rpm drive from Lenovo to replace my existing drive. Can I use Rescue & Recovery to move the entire contents of the existing drive over to the new drive? If so, what is the best procedure? I will be using an external USB connected seagate drive as my back-up location. Thanks in advance.

Answer:New HD, can I use Rescue & Recovery?

Sure, that's how I usually do it. Use the "create rescue media" option in advanced R&R to make the external USB bootable.  Watch for the "preserve existing data" checkbox if you have anything already on the ext HD that you want to keep. ( Just launching a full backup from the start menu will wipe your external drive first, and take a looooong time formatting.)  Then pull a full backup.  Install the new HD, boot the external HD to it's copy of R&R (that's what the rescue media option created) and run a restore. There are some cases when restoring to a completely blank HD where the boot to the new HD winds up at a black screen and blinking cursor - for some versions of R&R and some HDs.  In that case, reformat the new drive (by whatever means you can) and run the restore again.  Just running restore a 2nd time (since the drive is not blank any more) usually fails w/spontaneous R&R reboots for some reason.  There is another work-around IIRC. That is setting the HD to compatibility more before doing the restore, then back to AHCI after.  http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-66963.html#396899 Z.

Answer:Rescue and Recovery 3 CDs...

You can use the Recovery media discs, not the Rescue and Recovery discs. And currently the 1 tb HDD is too big to fit in your drive slot, which can only accommodate a hdd of 9.5 mm in height, which has the max capacity of 500 gig right now.

I have a ThinkCentre A51P machine.  I tried a Rescue and Recovery of selected files to an external USB hard drive. Unfortunately, when I did that, I wiped out all the data on the USB drive.  Is there any way to recover these files? It appears what I did back up is in a protected partition on this USB drive.  How do I remove all this new backup data and get back all my full USB HD space?  Can I just reformat that USB drive and get all my space back?

Answer:Rescue and Recovery

If you want to recover your deleted files, try undeleter programs like File Scavenger or UnEraser.  Depending on how much data was lost, the Trial version may be able to get it back, if you lost a lot of data, you may need to either pay for the full version, or find another free application to recover the space, reformatting your USB drive will do the trick. as it will wipe everything and bring it back to its original factory state.

Answer:Rescue and recovery for T42

Yes, you can use the disks from another T42... Go into BIOS, set the media drive (DVD or whatever you have) as the primary booting device, press F10 to save and exit. Insert the first disk, boot the machine and the recovery set will guide you from there. Hope this helps.
