Keyboard: Random Keys Not Working Despite Change of Keyboard

Question: Keyboard: Random Keys Not Working Despite Change of Keyboard

Hi guys, Something really strange started happening two days ago. Out of the blue the following keys stopped working: GHBackspaceWindows [email protected]' The laptop is a couple of years old and a bit dusty, so I took it to the local shop to get the keyboard replaced and cleaned. Seemed to be working fine when I left the shop. Then, a little while ago the space key and P stopped. Five minutes later they started working again but ctrl stopped and N is temperamental. I haven't spilt anything on it or knocked it. Any ideas what's going on?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

I have a Logitech K200 keyboard. It's been quite a few years since I have been using it.

It had been working fine till a few days ago. Now random keys aren't working. Like F2, N, Alt, left & right arrow keys.

Particular problem is with the N key, for which I have to use the onscreen keyboard & it's quite annoying.

Sometimes, the keys work all of a sudden. Like, for the past 2-3 days, the keys started working. Since yesterday afternoon, they again stopped working :/.

What could be the cause? I uninstalled & reinstalled the drivers too.

Should I just buy a new keyboard?

I have a user whose Tab key stopped working, but only on its own. That is to say, Ctrl-Tab, Shift-Tab, and Alt-Tab all still work. After swapping with a known-good keyboard, Ctrl doesn't work, and escape opens the start menu (which would indicate that ctrl is stuck down). After a second keyboard swap, with a keyboard that is known-good, tested, and absoutely pristine, he reports that the F key and Ctrl key sometimes do not work, along with a couple other keys.

No accessibility options are active, and the BIOS on all machines in this office are identical. What could possibly be going on here, and what can I do about it?

Are you receiving any errors in Device Manager?

To get to device manager, do the following:
Start->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager

Or

Type the following into the run dialog box (Located at: Start->Run)
devmgmt.msc

Let me know if there are any discrepancies.

I woke up this morning, turned on my computer, and found that the following keys do not work: g, h, alt, and ' I have my external keyboard plugged in right now and it works, as does the on-screen keyboard. I have installed Windows updates, uninstalled and reinstalled the keyboard driver, started in safemode, and removed the battery and pressed power for 60 seconds. Nothing is working. I realise it's probably a hardware issue, but to have random keys not anywhere near each other on the keyboard is a bit odd.  Anyone have any advice? I realise that this might mean it's the second trip for repairs for this computer in the past six months, which will make me very annoyed.

I recently (w/in last 2 weeks) purchased and received an E545 and after less than 8 hours of use the keyboard is extremely loose on the right hand side, primarily where the number pad sits but also extend into the right side of the alpha keyboard.  By losse, I mean that it doesn't sit well and when you press down on a key in that area of the keyboard, the entire right side of keyboard depresses.  ti's very disconcerting when typing and also extremely loud, which is an issue since I use the machine in meetings to take notes.

I've not seen much in searching, except for threads that are several years old.  I wanted to get some user input before contacting Lenovo, as I'm sure it will be better advice and less of a hassle.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:E545 keyboard problem - many keys not working - loose keyboard cable

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that the entire keyboard of your Lenovo ThinkPad E545 depresses on key presses.

From what you have posted, it sounds like a keyboard flex. Keyboard flexing occurs if the board supporting the keys is not rigid or if the design of the keyboard is faulty. For good keyboards, the effect shouldn't be noticeable.

If you feel excessive flexing in your keyboard, try to reseat the keyboard. Since your system is under warranty, I would strongly suggest you to take assistance from Lenovo technical support.

Best Regards,

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

Answer:Keyboard - Shift & Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I hope someone can help me to solve this problem.

Hello all..

okay this may sound dumb, but in the last few days, my standard keyboard a Logitech UV-90 (great board with tons of extra buttons etc - that I never use LOL) has an issue sometimes.

the question mark (?) is above the forward slash (/) and when I try to put a question mark at the end of a sentence, for some strange reason at times, it instead gives me a capital E witha french accent mark on it - the question mark is working properly right now so I can't even show that.

is this a win 7 issue? I ask only in that after 9 years with XP, and many diff keyboards, I've never ever had this happen...

Hi all,
I want to know whether anyone can please tell me how I can change a few of the extra keys which run at the top of the keyboard (Home, Pause Audio, Volume controls, etc..) to do something else such as play the next audio track?

Any Help would be much appreciated.

Oh yeah, the pc is running Windows xp Pro and it is a microsoft natural keyboard if that makes any difference. I have managed to do it using a program (Keystroke Converter) but I want to be able to do it more permanently as I cant afford to pay for this program.

Thanks

I have a Equium L-20, just bought it and every so often it is missing characters while typing, these are random, it isn?t as if certain keys are sticking can go through and type the alphabet and every 2 or 3 times it will miss letters or characters out as if I hadn?t pressed the keys, also the space bar can miss now and again.

Would this be a keyboard fault or software, it?s kind of got me puzzled and almost to point of returning it for a replacement.
During this short post it missed 4 letters out, had to check it and fill in the blanks

Answer:Equium L-20: Keyboard random keys not typing

Hi

Well, I have read some topics about the similar issues in this forum and I think it?s not a keyboard drive problem. In my opinion it?s something wrong with the keyboard hardware or with the cable connection.
I think the best way is to contact the ASP for the detailed informations. If the warranty is valid, all replacements will be done for free.

Hi all, used to frequent this site many moons ago but I'll be darned if I can remember my name!

Ignore my system specs; this is for my Acer Aspire 5551 laptop running Windows 7 64-bit, 6GB 1333 RAM.

The keyboard was second hand from eBay two or possibly three years ago. From the get-go the 'h' key never played ball, sometimes having to be pressed hard in order for it to respond (and then sometimes logging multiple instances). I could just about cope with that.

Now though, among others the following keys have utterly ceased to function.
w
e
r
[
So far I've tried the ol' method of taking out the battery for a minute. I've had the keyboard off and examined the ribbon; no unusual kinks or damage are visible. I also kept pressing the afflicted keys while moving the ribbon in the hope that it was a kink. No joy there.

Before I relent and buy a new board (they're cheap enough, but if I can save money this close to Christmas then everyone's a winner!) does anyone have any clues or experience with this kind of issue?

My apologies if this is not the correct sub-forum, I tried the peripherals section, but couldn't find the correct one.
The question is that I want to change the function keys on this keyboard because the F1 key has the sleep function and it's too close to the escape button. Therefore I want it a bit further away or even completely get rid of it.
Is this possible?

Hello

i am using a toshiba Satellite L750 i have used it approx ten times in the last two months since purchase its a backup to my imac. My problem is for some reason the @ button has swapped with the " button.

So if i type in for example an email Johnsmith"hotmail.com i get the " instead of the @ so to getet the @ if i hasve to use shift ".

is this something someone can assist me with, if i have explained it correctly.

Answer:Satellite L750 - keyboard has decided to change keys

Hi

You should simple change the keyboard language.
I assume the @ is placed on button marked with 2
In such case you should use the English(US)

Go to control panel -> region & language -> keyboards & languages

Press Change keyboards. Add English US and change this to default.

Hi,

some keys on the keyboard of my Z830 keyboard became sticky over time.

Is it possible to remove single keys, try to clean it and put the key back in, or is the key glued?

I wouldn't want to replace the whole keyboard, as most of the keys still work fine.

Thanks

Hi

The key caps are removable. But I?m not quite sure if caps cleaning would solve the ?sticky key issue?.

On Youtube you could find some interesting videos how to remove such key caps and to clean the area under the caps.

Hello - all of a sudden yesterday my keyboard became completely unresponsive. It would type random numbers as if it was held down ie" 55555555333333333336yyyyyy" and would continue non stop. Nothing on the keyboard was responsive. The only way I could delete anything was to highlight what was typed and since the keyboard was acting like numbers were held down it would just retype over it. I tried different ports/keyboards same thing.P

I cant even get into bios to boot from disk to reformat because the keyboard is unresponsive. I reformatted recently and dont really web browse on that computer so I think a virus/spyware would be rare but I dont know.

Any ideas, hoping that its not a burnt motherboard.. the mouse is fine.

Thank you

Answer:Keyboard unresponsive, types random number keys held down

1) Try a different keyboard
2) Maybe there's too much dust under the keys and it's interfering somehow. I seem to recall hearing something about that once.

I have a Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series 2 in 1 laptop and recently (within the past few days), some of the keys on my keyboard are not working when I start up the laptop. After my laptop has been on for a few minutes, they seem to work fine but they still randomly stop working for a few seconds at a time. For instance, they are working just fine right now. The keys that do this are all close together on the keyboard (which I feel like that has something to do with it) and are listed below.
p 0 - [ ; '
I should also point out that the keys are not broken or loose. I'm only guessing that this is a hardware problem and that it can be fixed if I have tools or something, but I'm not a tech wizard, so I don't know for sure.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Hi, this is my first post on these forums so I hope I am posting in the right area! After eight months of sitting in my closet infected with a virus, I finally took my Dell Inspiron 1525 to a computer repair store and had a new HD installed. It's working great and after being stuck with an Acer netbook during the Dell's hiatus, I'm happy as a clam. However, some of the keys on the keyboard are not working, and if I remember right, weren't working before the virus took the Dell out of commission. As far as I know, the keys that are not working are: Esc, Delete, and the down arrow key. The guy who fixed my laptop said he couldn't fix the keys, which I thought was kind of odd, as it seems like a pretty trivial task compared to saving all my data and installing a new HD, but then again I know nothing about repairing computers.Anyone have an idea of what might be causing just these keys to not work? I should say that about a year ago the laptop fell off my bed (oops) and I had to have the power jack repaired, but in all honesty I can't remember if the keys stopped working right after the fall or if it took a while.Obviously these keys aren't necessary for me to be able to use the laptop but would be handy to have them back so I don't always have to switch to the trackpad.I am running Windows Vista Home Basic.

I have an unusual issue that I know others have had as well.  MySHIFT, Z, X, C, V, M, SPACE BAR, and COMMA keys do not work.  I've tried everything short of replacing the motherboard. I upgraded to the most recent BIOS (F.46).  Took the battery out and held down the power button for over a minute.  Plugged the AC adapter in as the computer first boots, performed a Factory Reset, replaced the Hard Drive.  Uninstalled and re-installed keyboard drivers.  I even replaced the keyboard with a new one only to have the same exact keys not work.  This seems to me as if it's a Firmware issue or a faulty motherboard that we the consumer shouldn't have to pay for to fix.  HP should have some sort of recall or something as I've read numerous posts of this same issue. Has anyone found a fix for this or had any luck with HP Support when their laptop is no longer under warranty?

Check if any foreign partials stuck under keyboard. Use vacuum cleaner and blow the air with medium pressure, while performing this make sure that system is shutdown and remove the AC power adapter from the system.

If the issue still persists after that also then it could be a hardware related issue.

Hope this helps.

First of all, I want to say that I am no wiz with computers.Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 2 11. Windows 10 installed about 5 months ago.h and g keys, as well as ctrl c and v for copy and paste, and underscore key do not work at all using my keyboard. Onscreen keyboard works, allowing me to write h and g now: very annoying and time consuming! I've restarted, tried typing in safe mode, keys still did not work, turned on and off sticky keys, did not make a difference. I've tried shortcut keys, nothing worked not even temporarily. I did not do system restore because it said I would have to reinstall a lot of programs including microsoft word, and I just paid over 100 dollars for it and I am confused by what would happen? Cleaned keyboard, no dirt or anything stuck under keys. I am pretty upset, just applying to jobs, and writing resumes/cover letters is hard. If anyone can help I would appreciate it so much. I've done research online and it seems I'm definitely not the only one with this problem. Can't seem to fix it. Help please!Tara.

Hi, Recently I am unable to insert the exclamation mark (SHIFT+1) on any programs. I know there is no problem with any keys as the shift button works and also the number 1 button works. But when I press these two keys in combination I get nothing (just tried putting an exclamation mark here to no avail).  This problem happened with my dad's HP Win 10 laptop as well. Suddenly most (nearly half of his keys) stopped working and he has been using an external keyboard for 2 months (once again tried putting an exclamation mark here to no avail).  Really dissapointed as it clearly seems to be a HP problem after it happening to both my and my dad's HP laptops only. Can someone shed some light on this problem please. Thank you.

Hi,

I have an old laptop which I haven't used for a while, but want to start using it. However, the '1' and 'q' keys have stopped working. It hasn't taken a knock and I have removed the two keys, which were on a hinge, and could see no visable reason why they may have stoppped e.g. dirt (nothing more technical than that). The two keys when compressed do feel identical to the others, no signs of anything suck in there. Does anyone have any ideas? And if this type of thing is fixable?

Thanks

Answer:2 keys not working on keyboard?

Keyboards seem to drive their keys in diagonal rows. IE:
1qaz
2wsx
3edc, etc.

Since your 2 keys are consecutive in a diagonal row, we get the connection. The most suggested things are physically cleaning the membrane under the keys, and keyboard drivers. I have never owned a laptop, so I'm not sure you can just delete the keyboard driver, and let windows redetect. Or, just remove, and install the currect driver. Hopefully someone with laptop experience will be along with more info. A Guy

I have a friend :D that has a problem with certain keyboard keys not working. Such as;

The numbers across the top of the keys - 1,2,3,4,8,9,0.
If he holds down the shift key, still nothing on those numbers.
Various random letters also not working.

Swaps out keyboards, tries a couple others, no change.

This has happened to him before. They only solution in the past was to reformat. System restore doesn't fix it either...

Any suggestions? Ideas?

Answer:keyboard some keys not working

Hi nirmit1105,
Check if the keys are stuck on keyboard. Another step you can try is to check the keyboard functionality in safe mode and see if it exhibits the same behavior there as well.

Restart the computer.
Tap the F8 key on the keyboard during the boot process until you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen.
Select “Safe Mode with Networking” from the menu using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then press the <Enter> key.
Select the user account at the log in screen.
Try using your computer and see if the issue persists there.

In case of keyboard, you may also try using a USB keyboard and see if it works. If issue persists, remove the USB keyboard and use an Onscreen keyboard to see if the issue persists with that as well.

To use On screen keyboard:

Choose Start/Windows logo → Control Panel → Ease of Access → Ease of Access Center.
Click the Start On-Screen Keyboard button.
Test out the on-screen keyboard input in any application where you can enter text.
Click Options, select the Turn on numeric key pad check box, and then click OK.
Open a notepad and try typing on that by clicking on the keys of On screen keyboard.

Note: To use keystroke combinations (such as Ctrl+Z), click the first key (in this case, Ctrl) and then click the second key (Z). You don’t have to hold down the first key as you do with a regular keyboard.

I have searched online and nada!! I have a Lenovo ideapad, laptop. I have a Windows 10 operating system. I have a paper due tonight and am loosing valuable time. Please help!!

Answer:Keyboard keys not working

Try using the Windows on-screen keyboard. If you are seeing a space where your spacebar should be in the on-screen keyboard, then you'll need to change your keyboard layout back to US QWERTY (or whatever layout you type on.)

If the OSK looks fine, then check this page for help. If you've attached an external keyboard to your laptop in the past, refer to the first post. If not, you can try to attempt the second post.

Hi. Some of the keys on my T30 keyboard have stopped working completely, the keys are 4,5,r,t,f,g,v,b. If one look at the keyboard, these keys are just below each other, maybe giving a hint to someone who knows about keyboards what the problem might be. So my question now is: is it worth spending money on a new keyboard or could the problem be elsewhere? Any suggestions what to do? Thanks.

All of a sudden, while iam composing an email on hotmail, certain keys of my desktop keyboard stopped working...i assumed that once i restart it the issue would be resolved. I was mistaken. I have restarted my desktop computer, unplugged the keyboard from the cpu and start my pc up again, however the same issues persists. Most keys are functioning on my keyboard, but certain keys give no response. My num pad is not working, and the num lock green light doesnt even light up when i push down on it. Now the problem is, i cant log into my desktop windows xp, mainly because my password contains a 7 in it. None of the keys work on the numpad, however a few numbers do work from the main keyboard component. I have no idea what to do. I tried pressing f8 to go into safe mood but nothing happens. Answer:Some keys on keyboard not working.

Possibly the ribbon cable joining the keyboard to the notebook's motherboard has got a crack or become damaged, or maybe some debris, food, etc has got in there. If the cable has become damaged you will need a new keyboard which costs around $30

Hi,
I have an Acer laptop with a USB keyboard. All worked perfectly until I updated Win 8.1 to Win 10. Now my Page Up, Up key and Left Arrow do not work.
They work fine on the actual laptop keyboard just not the USB keyboard.
The keyboard works fine when attached to my other laptop (running Win 7) but these keys do not work on the Acer with Win 10.
I have updated drivers.
Any advice?

You have two options: stop using the USB keyboard with the Win 10 computer or roll back to the former OS and wait a few more months to try Win 10 and see if it has better drivers.

This might be reposted in hardware forum...

I have a fairly specific computing environment (as we all do), and an issue...
The issue is with a PC (details below) and a keyboard, and possibly some other hardware....

First the symptoms seems like the 5, 6 -, and = keys are not working; nothing happens when they are pressed. This goes for those keys SHIFTed. Also, CNTL+ALT+DEL doesn't bring up the task manager, and CTRL+V doesn't paste. I think that's all but IDK how to exhaustively test a keyboard.
The keyboard is a Microsoft Wireless 700 v2.0 with associated USB receiver and wireless optical mouse. The mouse, receiver and most of the keyboard work ok it seems. It was acquired 'used' because I don't need the extra wires.

The wired PS/2 mouse and every wired keyboard have worked ok.

Sometimes, I have read, this is a software fault (reference available), but I am very conscious of it might be an electromechanical fault with the keyboard. How can I tell ? I do not want to take the keyboard if I can possibly avoid it. I did that once to another keyboard and it's still in pieces :-o

Hey guys,

(Damn, Only I know how am I writing this post. It's so damn frustrating.)

Ok well here goes:

I was using a ps2 keyboard for a while now. But suddenly, certain keys stopped working.

I restarted, uninstalled the keyboard but to no avail.

I had a brand new usb keyboard lying with me, so I thought it's finally time to use it. But the same problem persisted though this time a different combination of keys not working.

I tried both the keyboard on a friend's PC and they both work like charm.

Now, I thought may be I should try windows repair, but I realized that the keyboard keys aren't even functioning in BIOS.

It's really irritating. I am having a feeling that this problem is mobo related (hence posting in this section).

I am currently using both keyboards to write this post, but yet there are few keys which aren't working on both. (so I actually have to copy/paste 'em from character map).

This whole thing is ridiculously painful. So please help.

Looking forward.

Thanks in advance!

I am using XP 64bit and XP pro (dual boot). Problem shows on both.

My mobo: Abit Ip35 pro

Welcome chinwoman to the windows 7 forums.

Based on your trouble shooting so far, it looks like your notebook keyboard is toast.

there could be a single wire from your keyboard that has a loose connection or broken off.
My recommendation is to get it replaced. If your technically inclined, most laptops keyboards can be removed and the flat ribbon connection can be cleaned. I would try that if your comfortable with removing your keyboard, other than that, it looks like your going to have to take it to a repair shop which most likely will do the same thing, or replace it.

OK, a bit of history. I have an Asus 1005HA netbook running XP Home. I used to have the Vietnamese and Chinese keyboard input methods that come with XP that you can enable in Regional and Language Settings in Control Panel. I could switch between English and Vietnamese/Chinese by pressing Alt-Shift.

After a while, the Vietnamese/Chinese input would randomly turn themselves on even though I was pretty sure I never pressed Alt-Shift. So I went into the Language Bar settings and removed both Vietnamese and Chinese. The Chinese input did go away, but the Vietnamese one never did. I kept removing it from the Language Bar, it kept showing back up the next time I opened the settings, and it kept randomly turning itself on.

Now the Vietnamese input doesn't just alter the typed text - it apparently messes with function keys like Backspace and Enter too. So if it turns itself on, suddenly Enter and Backspace, among other keys, don't work anymore. This only happens in some apps, and the set of keys that stop working also differs between apps, e.g. Esc works in Firefox but not in Windows Explorer, etc. If I press Alt-Shift, then the keys work again, presumably because the input is switched back to English.

So this morning I got sick of it, so I went into Regional and Language Settings, and unchecked the checkboxes that install Southeast Asian inputs (including Vietnamese, Thai, Tagalog and so on). After I hit OK, a box popped up with a progress bar showing all the files associat... Read more

This probably isn't the best way to do it but you can create a perfectly working layout in the microsoft keyboard layout creator and the character map under accessories on the start menu:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb964665.aspx

and then compile it (it compiles in My Documents) and then run the setup file. It will install a 2nd layout that you can switch to with ctrl + shift. You may be able to then remove the original broken keyboard layout. I think you do that under the control panel -> keyboard but I don't see that option on this computer I'm on now but that may be because it has 1 layout and some language options are disabled.

Hi, When I turned on my HP Envy 15t laptop yesterday several keys stopped working. They appear to be randomly placed around the keyboard: N, B, Caps lock, delete and a few others. I've tried several fixes that I have found on this forum but nothing has worked thus far. I now have an external keyboard hooked up and it works fine, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a laptop. I'm having a keyboard issue.

- Ok so I have an Acer Aspire V5-471G laptop. N its currently running windows 10 and I downloaded the anniversary update in september(not sure, don't remember exactly).
- But after the second week of October(i think) certain keys on my keyboard have just stopped working for no reason at all.
- Specifically the letters:- W, E, R, Y and the TAB key and recently I noticed the Windows Key is also not working.
- They do not work at all and nothing happens when I press these keys.

- As far I know the rest of the keys are working fine coz I did an online keyboard test(or maybe some key I dont use aren't working n I missed it)
- I don't know if the keys have stopped working bcoz of downloading the anniversary update or something else.
- I have tried removing the keys and cleaning under them with a soft-haired paintbrush coz I thought maybe there was dust under them that was obstructing the working of the keys but that dint change anything n keys were still not working after cleaning under them..

- Also 2 days after I found this problem, I did a system restore to a restore point that I had created about 5-7 days ago(in the restore point I created, everything including the keys was working fine thats y I decided to use the system restore). But that dint work either, the sys restore rolledback some updates but that was all; the keys were still not working..
- And so afterwords I decided to look for answers on the net but I dint find anything helpful. I... Read more

I'm using a Microsoft keyboard, the Wireless Optical Desktop Elite and the Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 mouse. Both updated to IntelliType 5.3 and IntelliPoint 5.3 respectively. Os is XP Pro SP2. The keyboard has assignable keys all of which work as intended with the exception of the +/-/mute keys that controls sound on the computer. The box is ticked to display this on screen. It does, up to a point, if I press mute it shows on screen but not by pressing the plus/minus keys and I cannot increase the volume nor decrease it by using them. This has occurred in the last couple of days or so. I can of course play sound using the volume playback control in the taskbar but I'd like to get my keyboard keys working again as the volume control much more adjustable . Any suggestions anyone?

Answer:non-working keys on wireless keyboard

If this is a recent problem have you installed anything that may be causing the problem? Mine went flakey after a system restore, reinstalling the Intellipiont software cured it

Some of the keys on my laptop stopped working while I was playing a fighting video game was rapidly tapping a bunch of keys. The up and left arrows, right shift, and from q to p only t and y work.I have tried everything on the troubleshooting page http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03843122 as well as replacing the keyboard. Sometimes pressing the keys very hard will make them work . Also pressing certain keys at the same time will do something like ert will increase screen brightness. Don't think it did that before.

Hello. I have came here, just to notice S10 users with same problem, to help solve it.If you apply brute force to keyboard with 4 fingers, and slide them along all 4 button rows in opened notepad, I see that some letters shows, but most of them, if you just push same button, does not show any reaction. This can happen after laptop fells on ground or gets any shock on chassis. The reason for not working keyboard, can be cable problem. The thing is, lenovo has designed very poor flat cable connectors for internal parts, that have possibility to open up and disconnect cable in some cases. Doing this (opening up laptop), your guarrantee is void. To fix this, you need to unscrew 4 philips (cross) screws connect cable back to slot and screw back.Remove batteryTurn laptop around, so its bottom is upLook for 4 black screws in a line, situated on that side, where is front of laptop, unscrew themTurn laptop around, so its top is upOpen laptop lidAply gentle force, to remove palm-rest/mouse  panel (Warning, there are two cables connected to it, dont tear them apart, applying too much force, removing panel)Do not disconnect cables, just move panel to down, opening up just couple centemeters of boardLook for flat cable connector, coming from keyboard, just to the right of two screws, tightening keyboardLook for connector tightening grip, a black plastic grip, that can be opened, holds on hinges. I have an Acer Aspire 5720 and recently had the hard drive wiped and Windows 8 installed. Today it won't let me log in at all and eventually I have tracked the problem down to specific keys on my keyboard not functioning. Specifically:

i o x backspace 2 4 5 7 0

Any helpful suggestions? The rest of the keyboard seems to be working perfectly well....

I have two chromebooks here with certain keys not working. One of the chromebooks is a 14-x000na, and the other is 14-x006na. On the 14-x000na, the 6, y, h, n, 7, u, j and m keys are not working, and on the 14-x006na the 8, i, k and , keys aren't working. I have reset to factory settings, but this didn't do anything. Any help would be appreciated, as warranty has ran out so HP won't help me. Thanks.

Hi. I have a Lenovo 3000 v100 laptop, and it comes with its own set of function keys. You press the "Fn" key and then whatever corresponding key for various functions. However, recently I had a malware attack, and although I think it was fixed (in this forum), some of these Fn keys don't work.
Specifically, Fn + F7 (Monitor Control) and Fn + F12 (Hibernate).
Also, the "Lenovocare" hard button and the "multimedia control" hard button also do not work.
This link : ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/41w3465.pdf
has a bit of infomration on the Fn keys in general.

Also, around the same time (I don't know if this is related), but when I go to Power Management in the Control Panel, the dropdown list of Power Schemes contains nothing and I cannot set any of the options (i.e. when to turn off, standby, etc).

I have tried downloading and installing the drivers again, as well as various antimalware scans. The keys by themselves work (f7 and f12), and the Fn key in general works, just not together.

Can anyone help?

Or can anyone perhaps suggest a more appropriate forum?

Daughter's Chromebook is about a year or so old and the keyboard has stopped working properly.  Some keys work, others don't. Type the letter K and get Ki, type the letter s and get sxw, type the letter T and get nothing, and so forth. Tried the Refresh+Power thing but that failed to work. At one point thje keyboard began operating without being touched (!) which suggests a stuck button but couldn't tell which. We're wide open to suggestions.

I'm not sure when it started, but some of the keys on my numerical pad on the keyboard have stopped working: '2', '.', '+', '/' and also the down cursor key. I have a Logitech Internet keboard with 'i-touch' and have tried uninstalling the drivers and re-installing them which hasn't helped. I have checked throughly for viruses and spyware too.I know it isn't a major problem but it is really starting too annoy me now!! Anyone else had a similar problem and solved it?

Answer:Keyboard problem - some keys not working

I had a similar problem and sorted it - but only by buying a new keyboard. They are so cheap now:click hereHTHPaul
