Spectre x360 2 months of life - is right hinge defective-pro...

Question: Spectre x360 2 months of life - is right hinge defective-pro...

Hi dears,I've bought in my country (Italy) the Spectre x360 (2015 edition), model 4102nl, 8gb RAM, 256 SSD, i7, QHD display in september, so it's two months old.Since first day I've unboxed my Spectre, I've noticed what looks like a manufacturing defect, despite it's very tiny.My right hinge isn't aligned with the display lid, compared to left hinge and it sticks out from the lid less than 1mm. The left hinge doesn't sticks out.Furthermore, when I open the display lid sometimes (usually when I close the display totally) I can hear a very faint noise coming from the right hinge.Could this lead to breaking itself in the immediate future? Can this cause the display glass to break because of its misalignment?I'd like to avoid to send it to service because I need the laptop for work, only in the case it doesn't cause any problem in the future.I've attached some images examples and a video with the faint sound when opening it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2j6u3jpL6M left hinge from top left hinge from side (the good one) right hinge (assumed to be defective) from the topright hinge (assumed to be defective) from the side. It sticks out about < 1mm on the top part

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

My 3 month old HP Spectre x360 laptopo screen cracked on it's own. I've read several other forums where people were having the same issue. Opened up my laptop to a cracked edge right above the webcame with a crack going to the right edge of the screen. I have kept this laptop with extreme care. I have never dropped it, put pressure on it, and if I travel with it I keep it in the sleeve that it comes with as well as a very padded protected laptop case. I've experienced the same as others where they opened up the laptop and saw a crack. I contacted HP and was told that I would have to pay $300 for the laptop, but they would give me a 50% discount. Either way, that's 15% of the amount I paid for the laptop. They kept saying cracks just don't happen, while I did even link them with the other forums. Worst customer service in addition to worst quality assurance of their allegedly "premium" laptops. This is my first and very well my last HP product. Posting here for a last hope to see if HP will come through and fix my laptop without putting the blame on me.

I have noticed that the left hinge sticks and causes misalignment of the laptop's display.  This looks to be a common problem reported in HP's blogs.  How can this be fixed?   Thank you.

The left hand hinge on my wife's HP Spectre X360 is loose. It looks like the right hand hinge is taking most of the weight and the screen leans slightly as a result of this. It has been like this for a number of months, but is starting to get worse. Unfortunately, I didn't report it previously and the warranty ran out just over 2 weeks ago. My concern is that not only is the left hand hinge getting looser, the additonal weight on the right hand hinge will lead excessive wear and the risk that this hinge will fail as well. is there any way HP will repair the faulty hinge, as it appears to be a known issue.

So i got my x360 and I loved it, everything was going fine and no problems at all with it. But after about a month i noticed that the left hinge(looking at the screen in normal laptop use) was starting to wobble. It has gotten more loose since then and now if i have the screen at about 120 degrees and i hold both the screen and keyboard in separate hands and pull, i can see the gap between the screen and keyboard get bigger. Maybe around 2mm. In addition if i shake the laptop back and forth just a bit i can hear the hinge squeaking. Basically it feels like some gears are loose or and is just not normal because the right hinge has no problem what so ever and functions perfectly. I never droped my laptop or hit it in to something so i hope there is a fix for this because i realy need my laptop for college and i love the x360. Thanks.

I have a Spectre x360-13 and the hinges are not aligned evenly. By being misaligned, the screen doesn't match up with the base when closed and it is difficult to get it in tablet mode. It is as if one of the hinge is broken or slipped a gear. Any Ideas on how to fix this?I bought instore at best buy in Washington DC but I donīt live in the USA.

Hi,So recently i started noticing that my hinge on my spectre was loose. Whilst i decided to try look past the issue and use the laptop normally, over the past couple of days the issue has magnified and i have noticed that it is at the point that when my laptop is closed. The screen doesn't align with the base.I haven't dropped it, nor have i excessively open and closed the lid or even for that matter used the 360 degrees tablet function.I am still well within my warranty and was interested in seeing as to what my options are, given the amount i spent on the laptop.Regards,Dylan

I'm having problems with the hinge on my HP Spectre x360, it's crooked and appears to be a manufactoring problem. This might seem like a small and unremarkable problem but It's my understanding that because of this problem I'm also having problems with my laptop creaking like crazy. I've been trying out the same laptop at a local department store and that one does not have the same problem. It's really sad seeing as the laptop feels very premium in the material/build but the creaking makes me scared it will fall apart at any secound. Seeing as HP is such a large company I'm guessing that there will be no way for me to get this fixed but I decided to ask here before using some annoying fix like glue to stop the creaking. This is in-excusable for such an expensive product as this one. I'm not prepared to have paid around 2000$ to get a faulty product. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, I bought my HP Spectre x360 on February 1st, 2016. In the past few weeks I have noticed that both hinges have become loose and pull away from the lower portion of the computer. I am worried it will break completely in the next few months. I tried going to the support page on the HP website but contantly get a 404 error when I select my computer model. This was a large purchase for me and I am not happy that this premium product is having hardware issues in less than a year.

Hi, I have bought my HP Spectre x360 Convertible for a week and I have an issue with the screen hinge. When I open or close the screen, one of the hinge makes a low noise like it is cracking. After I checked on it, I realised that the hinge are slightly uneven, which makes it touch the metal body. Not sure if this will makes an issue later on, but it already makes a scratch on the metal body when I open or close the lid. The sounds it makes is unpleasant to hear as well.Is there any way to fix this problem? Thanks  Regards,Syed

Hello, just today I've discovered an issue with my laptop (recently acquired). When closing it, the screen will hang over the bottom portion of the device by maybe about 1-2mm, sloping from the left to the right where it does properly rest. I notice as well that the medial joint of the left hinge where it connects with the screen is jutting out slightly, rather than resting flush as the right one does. I haven't had this device long and have pampered it as one would their own child, so this is of great concern to me. I can't recall whether or not I have insurance at this point, but I do have a copy of my receipt on my home desktop.I am trying to include photos I took demonstrating my specific issues with measurements, but they exceed file size limit. If one would wish to see said images, I will happily supply if presented a means to do so. I wish to hear back soon, thank you for your time.

After I have been using spectre x360 for a couple weeks, I noticed that the hinge is quite loose particularly at 90 to 180 degrees. And I can wobble it at some point without using any force. Moreover, when I hold the base while the screen is more than 90 degrees and shake the notebook a little bit, the screen will bend far to the back. It looks like the hinge is too loose and can not hold the weight of the screen. Is there any way to tighten it?Thanks.

My HP SPECTRE X360 - 15-AP012DX is less then 3 months old and the screen or "Digitizer" mysteriously cracked just like many others on the board. I have no answers for how this happened. The ridiculous part of the equation is that the Laptop has never even left my desk 1 time in its short life.  I live alone as well so its not like it was touched by anyone, kids, dogs etc. I never even close the lid, it just sits there. I went through the Hp parts surfer and was told I need Part number: 841265-001 for $990.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The laptop can be purchased new for around that amount current... Out of total frustration, I disassembled the digitizer/ screen and LCD thinking that I could find replacement parts once I could learn the model numbers of the actual parts but I cannot find anyone that has anything for this machine. I have contacted 3 of the larger repair shops, Ebay, Amazon as well as searched every combination of model number possible, no luck. Now I have a laptop thats disassembled and merely worthless.....Im highly agitated with this entire process.  This was my first Hp product and it will be my last. I read so many threads and I the general consensus is that HP doesnt care about the end user. Its always deflection deflection deflection. I have owned 7 or 8 laptops since 2001 and never had a cracked screen. This is a "sub par" laptop that was not designed properly, end of story.  Does anyone know how to get parts for thi... I purchased a Spectre x360 almost two years ago (Sept. 2015) and the laptop worked fine. After about two months, I noticed the hinges did not line up as cleanly but the laptop still opened, closed and folded back without issue. I recently opened my laptop and noticed that the right hinge is shaky and that the screen wobbles a lot because of it. This seems to be a purely physical issue as I "pop" the hinge back into place and it secures. While the screen is still shaky, I am less worried about it this way. I have never dropped my laptop, haven't travelled with it and it sits flat on my desk 99% of the time. How should I proceed? Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi everyone, i'm posting on this forum because after just a year i noticed that my left hinge on the Hp Spectre X360 is a bit unstable and this problem it's really annoying! I have another year for the legal warranty but the problem is that the HP Service Pack is just expired. So i wanted to ask on this forum if there's someone else who had the same problem and how can i resolve it. Probably there's something i can do before paying another Service Pack and sending my computer to the assistance. Thanks for answers!

Hi,  I have had my spextre for just over a year now. About 6 months or so ago I started to notice the screen wobble a little more, I played it off as nothing. Not so long ago I notice the left hinge is loose, and that is the source of the wobble on the screen. It seems as though the left hinge can be pushed in towards the laptop a couple of mm signlalling to me it is not properly secured. Is there a fix for this? TIA!

So I got a brand new13 inch HP Spectre X360 on August 24. I really wanted this laptop over the Mac because I felt it was lighter than a Pro, more powerful than an Air, had a great display, plus was more vessatile than the two due to its rotation capability. To my disappointment, I quickly found out the trackpad seemed loose (you could feel a slight rattle by lightly pressing down the middle). 15 days later, I exchanged it at Best Buy only to find, low and behold, my new one having the same exact issue with the trackpad. Not only that, but I feel that even the screen hinge is ever so slightly loose. Not that it moves in laptop, tent, or presentation mode -- but when I type quick I feel the screen shake just a tiny bit. Moreover, when in tablet mode, the two halves of the computer (the screen and back of the keyboard underneath it) don't stick together. They pry apart about an inch. I called HP and they said it could be my particular local Best Buy bought a bad bunch or something? I did see other threads on here with people complaining about the trackpad, and some have suggested that there are some 'malfunctioned' unitss and that if one were to keep exchanging, they would eventually get a good one. I also have slight cackling of speakers without headphones when playing music. So should I exchange for a second time? Would Best Buy be upset -- do they have a limit on this sort of thing? And if it helps, I have the three year warranty/Geek Squad tech support package... Read more

Hello.  I noticed that the two hinges are slightly uneven.  The right one is slightly higher than the left (which is flush with the base).  It doesn't make the screen uneven or touch the desk.  Just before noticing this, I had applied some pressure directly to the left hinge. Is this OK?  Is there a cause for concern? This is my first 360 laptop and I'm particularly concerned about the durability of these hinges. Thank you!

Hi,  I was not super sure as to where to post this so I put "Notebook Video, Display and Touch".So I bought this new HP Spectre x360 about a week ago during the cyber sales in preparation for classes at University next semester as I was wanting something small, lightwieght, and with a long lasting battery that could get me though the shcool day. I love everything about this laptop except it seems to have a very short battery life. When I bought it, all the tech reviews and the official HP website claimed an 11 to 12 hour battery life, however I cannot seem to get more than around 4 or 5. Perhaps the battery is bad?I do not know too much about computers so I had my brother help me choose the model. I have the i7 6500u, 16gbs of ram, and a 512gb SSD. My brother said with these specific components, the battery life could be effected a little bit but was under the impression that it would still be able to serve me at least 8 hours while at school. Should I contact HP support about the battery life problem? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

I bought the Spectre x360 to replace my HP Envy.  The promised 12+ hours of battery life have resulted in only 4 hours.  VERY disappointing since, I've chosen to buy this product over MAC which delivers 10 hours.  I have checked the forum and there is no solution to this and has been going on for at least a year.  Why is HP not delivering?  I spent $1400 for something that was promised and not delivered.  Can anyone help?  Can I send this back and get a refund? I can't find help anywhere.  LK

My x360 QHD Spectre has a low battery life in the beginning it has a 7 hour life with medium brightness then it's like 4:30 hours with Battery Saver on mode and I already removed bloatware and I only watch movies on it but when I game it's 2:30 hours (Fan gets loud and laptop gets hot) I'm pretty sure the battery life should be 10 hours

I recently bought my Spectre x360 and overall I am very happy with my purchase. However, I am a bit concerned with battery life. For my version (i7 processor and UHD screen) I am only achieving about 5 hours usage from each charge. I had expected nearer 9 hours from the adverts for the model. Reading messages from other users I seem to find that to achieve nearer 9 hours i should lower screen brightness to about 50%. Surely the main reason for buying a notebook with a UHD-4K screen is for the display to be bright especially when watching videos (Nertflix, iPlayer etc).Any suggestions about improving battery life please

Hi!  I am also having concerns about my laptop's battery life. It would probably run for a max 5 hours out of the claimed 12 hours battery life. I don't have any applications - besides Microsoft programs and iTunes (NO GAMES). I don't overcharge my laptop, so once it reaches 100%, I unplug straight away. Any solutions out there to improve battery performance? Thanks so much in advance! Sam

I bought a brand new hp spectre x360 last December 2016 because I was amaze of the features being advertised at Best Buy Station Square Burnaby, CA store and they order it for me. When I got my order which I'm expecting it's brand new product, however after 2 weeks of using it I observed that the battery life has short period of time to think that I fully charged it. Because of these I return my laptop in the store to give complain regarding this matter. The store took it for repair and until now it's almost a month I haven't received any update regarding the status of my laptop. And I'm paying for the laptop which I haven't use. Kindly address this issue and hoping to hear from HP company soon.

I know this question has been asked already but I too need a solution to the HP Spectre x360's very, very poor battery life. I struggle to manage 2 hours on this, with brightness at the max (I need it like that). I've seen other people managing 5-6 hours and thats all I really need. If someone could tell me how they managed to get that, I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance!

I just get the new HP Spectre X360 recently (earlier this month) and I've been loving it so far except for the battery life. I have been barely getting 5.5~6 hours (which is not even close to the advertised 14 hour battery life) with the battery saver settings while being connected to a stable wifi network and just listening to music and browsing on the web. Is there any way to resolve this issue? I also checked the battery through the HP Assistant program and it seems fine.

I just bought the Spectre 360 and am having the same overheating issues as above.  One of the main reasons for the purchase was the hyperbaric cooling system so the laptop would not overheat.  This one is so hot to the touch within an hour of turning it on that it burns my leg if I am using it on my lap.  When on a table, the bottom vents are covered but the side vents are not.  This is a laptop, it is not built to carry around a cooling table, it is meant to be portable.  Mine is less than 12 hours old and I feel as though I need to return it too.  Any updates to this issue before I do that? Thanks.

I bought the i7, QHD version of the Spectre convertible laptop two days before Christmas. Overall, I think it's a great product - which makes it even sadder that I'm thinking of returning it.The advertisements said 11 hours of battery life. Now, obviously that's not going to be accurate for normal everyday usage, but the salespeople in the store (and common sense) said that it would probably still get at least an eight hour, more like nine hour battery life on a single charge. Nope! FOUR HOURS. That's ridiculous. That's just over a third of the advertised battery life.I thought (and still think) it might be an issue with the battery itself, as the computer runs really really hot - it's basically impossible to put this thing on my lap at times. Which is annoying. But I did the HP Support Assistant battery check and it said it was fine, and then I did the BIOS battery check and it passed. And then the HP staff member I was chatting with on the support system had the gall to say "4 hours is actually really good". NO, IT IS NOT REALLY GOOD. Similar laptops in this category get about 7 hours of real time use. I bought this computer in large part because of that puported long battery life, and all the reviews said that the battery life was pretty great - none mentioned being four hours. Were reviewers sent different computers? And this four hours is not playing video games on full brightness settings. No. This four hours is on 25% brightness, power saver mode on, battery saver mode ... Read more

Hello, I got my 2016 HP Spectre x360 (Kaby Lake) laptop a week ago, and it seems the battery life is very underwhelming. I get around 4 hours from mixed usage (browsing/productivity/media). I had the previous gen. Spectre and almost similar tasks got me 8hr+ battery life. I've tried battery testing/calibration etc. suggested in the support pages. Anyone else having similar problems? I want to give the laptop some chance before I replace/return it.

Hi! I purchased my laptop around 3 to 4 months ago via my school. Initially, the laptop was able to live up to its claims of a "long battery life" but within 2 months, the battery life had decreased from 10 hours to 2-3 hours. Moreover, the laptop seems to be very laggy, despite the fact that the majority of my files are stored in Dropbox and I rarely have anything more than a few google chrome tabs open (and occasionally a microsoft word document open). Are there ways to solve this? Should I purchase a new battery?

The HP spectre x360 is advertised as having up to 12.5 hours of battery life. I was so excited when I got it until 4 hours later when it died. So I set out to maximize its battery life to get the advertised 12 hours. Yet, after taking ABSOLUTELY EXTREME measures to extend its battery life to the fullest, I was ONLY able to get 8 hours of battery life. Here's what I did (My laptop is fully updated latest drivers and everything): Generated a Battery Health Report (everything looked good)Used HP's 'Support Assistant' Battery Check and it came back "OK".Turned on 'Powersave Mode' (this dims the screen even at 100%)Reduced the screen brightness to 70%Limited my use to just ONE program (Microsoft Edge) with super quick use of a few other programs.Disabled Cortana.Disabled One Drive sync.Disabled Desktop Slideshow.Disabled ALL auto startup processes services that I knew to be safe to disable. (I disabled things like Bonjour service, google update, microsoft update and adobe update services). Went into advanced power options & set the "Maximum Processor Performance" to 60% (this caps it at 1.48GHz)Even set the WiFi to "Maximum Battery Savings".Then thought "Oh what the hell" and set EVERYTHING to "Maximum Battery Savings" (things like the GPU, the hard drive, etc).Went into the BIOS and disabled the 'eternal flame' LED indicator  on the F5 key. After exactly 8 hours of use I was down to 14% so I turned off the wifi a... I just purchased the new Spectre x360 (i5 6200u version, model number d108) and I'm experiencing muddling battery life. I only seem to be managing around 6 hours or so of casual browsing. This is with the screen brightness down to the lowest possible, killing/removing unnecessary programs and barely anything running in the background other than Google Drive. I've seen a review which managed to get 9 hours of browsing and that was on the version running the Broadwell CPUs which are supposedly not quite as efficient as the newest ones. So what's going on here? I know manufacturers exaggerate but half the marketed time with minimal load and lowest brightness doesn't seem right?

Hi @fanalk,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Spectre x360 with poor battery life. Battery life will vary depending on numerous factors including product model, configuration, loaded applications, features, use, wireless functionality, and power management settings. The maximum capacity of the battery will naturally decrease with time and usage. Here is a link to a performance troubleshooter with Windows. Biggest thing is the Apps are not closed or stopped. Please let me know how this goes.Thanks.

Just bought the new 4k 13 inch spectre x360. So far it has been great, except that I am getting nowhere near the advertised battery life. I have already researched these forums, and read the tips located here - http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c00596784 - and here (translated from Spanish to English) - http://h30467.www3.hp.com/t5/Consejos-de-Expertos-para-notebooks/Consejos-de-mantenimiento-de-Bater%... - and nothing has helped.  In just 2 hours of up time with the screen set to 50% or less, I reached 20% battery remaining. This was only with web browsing and some office processses such as email and Microsoft Word. Do I have a bad battery, or is the battery life overall just not as good (or even close to) advertised? The laptop is less than 30 days old.

Hi, For several months now I have been cautiously dealing with the left hinge that has broken away from the base cover of my ENVY TS 17. After reading several posts regarding the Envy hinge issue I'm very disappointed to say the least as this appears to be a manufacture defect. Where my laptop is out of warranty, can a moderator steer this matter onto an HP tech so I can discuss having the base cover and hinge problem fixed? Thanks - Packet1

Just throwing my hat in the ring for another PSA about this tragically flawed machine. Mine locked up at about 18 months old, which seems like I squeezed a few more months out of it than most other owners of this machine. After lots of time on the phone and a couple back and forth emails, the exchange offered from lenovo customer service for being sold a defective machine (no longer under the one year warranty) was a 25% refund and no functioning product. I'd been a lenovo customer for about the past 8 years, but this makes it very easy to never ever buy another product from this corporation.I know that we live in an age of designed obsolesence in order to keep buying things, but this approach is deeply wasteful and costly to both consumers and the environment. Not to mention it seems borderline criminal. I know this comment won't change that, but I somehow feel like it's a duty to try to warn others, even though it's likely too late.

Hello,  I bought an EliteBook laptop in August 2015 (3 years warranty and HP Care Pack) in the UK. The right hinge is defective and I can hear a crack every time I open the laptop. The issue started back in January when I could hear a slight click every time I opened it and now it?s becoming worse and louder. My concern, after reading so many comments and complaints about defective and broken hinges, is that this will end up in a broken hinge and further damage to the laptop. I'm really disappointed to learn that this is happening in a premium business-class notebook such as the EliteBook and I would like to be able to get it fixed.   Please let me know what I need to do in order to get this taken care of.  Thank you!

I've had an Aspire S 13 for a week now and was enjoying the experience, at least, until today. I opened my laptop this evening and the hinge covers suddenly snapped off and one of them flew right at my face and striked me in the left eye. Took some time to recover, now that I've recovered and am typing this article at the moment, someone please tell me what just happened. Was this a manufacturing defect? Did I do something wrong? As far as I recall, the laptop was usually always on my desk and barely traveled with it, despite it being an UltraBook. I open my laptop roughly twice to few times a day and I don't recall roughly opening it at all. Does warrenty cover this, what do I do? I'm pretty disappointed obviously, a product I thought was great, just malfunctioning out of nowhere. Sent from my Aspire S 13 (S5-371T-537V)P.S. I bought the laptop from Acer at Amazon. Not a reseller.

Answer:Defective Hinge - Aspire S 13

Hi,Sorry to hear your misfortune, you will have no problem getting a refund from Amazon, they are brilliant in handling customer service, just give them a call, send it back, get a refund from Amazon. It must be a one off failure, you get this kind of defect in any electrical goods.

What's the difference between the HP Spectre x360 and the HP Envy x360? They both look the same. The only noticeable difference is that HP Spectre x360 has a Radiance Infinity display, while HP Envy x360 has an IPS display. Having the same specs, except for the display, why is the Spectre x360 more expensive than the Envy x360 ? Moreover, I thought that IPS is better than TN, which is my guess that is the technology used for the Radiance Infinity.

Answer:HP Spectre x360 vs HP Envy x360

Hi, You've got few questions about those products. Well, come to a store and yoy can see the differences. Better still, you can buty 2 machines and compare.  For build quality, the HP Spectre x360 is much better than the Envy x360 you can also find Pavilion x360 - we are talking about SPECS and BUILD here about plastics and metals about wood and gold. Regards.

Hi, I have a P50-C-17J (no CD, 128SSD, 1TB 5400rpm HD)

When I close the screen, the left side of the panel never fully closes. To do so, I have to 'lift' the hinge on the back left. The hinge then raises up about 1.5 mm and everything fits. I also notice that I can move this hinge up and down by that 1.5 mm pretty easily, but the one on the right is firmly in place. If I look in the gap between the hing and the body, on one side I see a wider black something going from the body to the hinge at an angle, and on the other side a small rod sicking straight out of the hinge, but not not reaching the body. On the hinge on the other side this small rod does go into the body.

Is this how it is supposed to be, or was there a manufacturing mistake and the hinge not built in correctly?

Thanks,
Grant

Hello, I bought my U530 Touch from Vatan Computer in Turkey, on November 2014. Let me first make clear that the law states the standard warranty period as 2 years in Turkey, so my laptop is still under warranty.  What happened to maybe hundreds of people on this forum happened to me, too. One day, a little over a month ago, when I was opening the lid of my laptop, I felt a resistance and the plastic casing on the left hinge cracked slightly as I tried to open my computer. But when it was fully open, the plastic was cracked and would not get back into its original position and it was clear that closing the lid was not an option anymore. I could see the faulty hinge and some cables from the opening between the screen and the cracked plastic. Thankfully, my screen didn't crack like so many users' here and I was able to use my laptop as a desktop for a few weeks until I could take it back to Vatan Computer, lid open, so that they could send it to service.  I received a message 6 days later stating that I had to pay the quarter of what I had payed for my computer (1000 USD) in order to get it fixed because it was "due to user error". Talking to Vatan computer or technical service on the phone was useless. I tried to explain to them that I take very good care of my computer, I have not dropped it, they cannot find any indication of misuse on the machine, but they wouldn't even listen to me. So I contacted Lenovo Turkey for support. They did n... Read more

The hinge mounting points on the the Inspiron 5548 ripped out of the plastic mounting points and now the shell of the laptop is torn open whenever the laptop is opened. In addition, the hinge failure caused the wireless antenna wires to sever at the clip points on to the wireless card.
I am a IT professor and teach laptop repair. Since it is out of warranty, I did a exploratory disassembly and saw the exact cause of the failure:
1) The hinge assemble requires TOO MUCH FORCE to rotate the hinge thus putting excessive force on the mounting screws into the plastic of the shell.
2) The metal grommets embedded in the plastic of the shell began to shift until the plastic cracked and all three mounting points failed where they are attached to the shell. THE STRUCTURE is TOO WEAK.
The fact that your support tech could immediately tell me the repair cost for this problem tells me it is very common. $150 and a three month warranty is not a repair I have confidence upon.
I am deeply disappointed that Dell will not step up and admit that this line of computers has a design flaw. It took me less five minutes to identify many, many internet hits describing the EXACT problem this laptop is suffering.
The 5547 and 5548 share the exact same parts for the hinge and palm rest.
Here is one on Dell's own support forums:

I was given an HP Ency Touchsmart computer summer 2014 as a graduation present. A warranty was purchased for the computer from Best Buy and for a while there were no issues with the computer other than the cooling fan going out. Now, on the right side of my laptop, the plastic bottom is coming apart from the keyboard base of the computer near the port for the charger. I cannot close the laptop without the gap becoming wider and at this point I cannot close the base and the optical drive is no longer flush with the plastic bottom of the computer. I have never dropped this computer and I have never forcefully opened it. I can see inside where this metal hinge will not lay down properly when I try to close the laptop and because of this it has actually started to crack the plastic base of my computer.

Hello community,as in the title to recognize, we have recently increased problems with our laptops. Devices just go out during operation, graphics cards goodbye (green cast, etc.), TPM chip is defective, faulty mousepad ...  Moreover, even comes the great vexation that often errors occur right after the first turn. Is this now the norm at Lenovo? There is no more final test before the devices are shipped? We had short-term (in the last 8 weeks) 6 defective equipment, long-term (3-6 months) another 9 notebooks.  The support further complicated then the whole process. To try a BIOS update, a device that is not running, is already really laughable.  What is the overall experience?

Answer:Defective 40% of our company laptops L5x0 within 3 months. Is this normal?

From what you describe you must not have a lot of laptops? 40% when you only talk about less then a dozen or so.I have to say that your defect rate with those computers must have a connection of some kind. Either a range of defective models related to a run of bad parts during assembly of something that is unique to your use of the laptops. For example Nvidia had a series of bad dies for some of their Nvidia graphic chips. They separated under heat and cause graphic display problems. Some lost all display. This is just one example, however and if your failures are from different models with different hardware I suspect another problem. Heck I am using a rather old ThinkPad R400 and have to say most of what I like about Lenovo Thinkpads is their tenasity to hold up under use. They are kind of bulky and ugly but they have always performed well. Any assembled product has its share of defects. But what you are describing would be on the extremely bad luck side of it. Sounds like you need to do much more then just a warranty or replacement and actually have some technical people investigate this for a real cause.

The Hinges on my Envy TouchSmart 15  Notebook are falling apart.  The Screen is now still working but when I turned it on i got a message that the fan is not working and warned that it could overheat.  I have looked on line and found that this is a very common problem with this model.  The hinges are apparently just glued togather and parts break off and cause the fan to stop.  This is rather upsetting and frustrating and will be the last computer I plan to purchase with an HP stamped on it.  What do I do now to get this fixed ?

I had the hinge repaired last year and it broke again, with a lot more damage. it's not worth it to have it repaired again, at higher cost, if it's just going to break again. I notice that this is a pervasive design flaw, from all the complaints I've seen online.  So, has it been addressed in new models? I like HP, but will definitely will buy something else if this is a continuing issue.

So, I just sent back my envy 6t-1000 for the second time today because the left hinge completely broke and I can't even open the laptop. I've had it for a year and 5 days exactly and my warranty expired, so I'm paying all out of pocket for hp to fix it.Back in about October I went on a trip, came back and my laptop had a cracked screen and after talking with hp they told me that any 6t-1000 model for a certain time span had a "defective" hinge kit since these were new ones to accommodate the ultra book style. In the end I don't know why I'm really paying for HP to fix the hinge kit that is defective in the first place. Especially for a $171 due to my warranty being overdue by a measly 5 days. Can anyone offer some advice or tips so I can work with hp? I surely don't want this to be "fixed" and magically 6 months down the road end up having to replace the hinge kit a 3rd time.

The protection plan has expired and not sure what next. Help or suggestions regarding this will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've had my hp envy laptop for around 3 years, my husband bought it for me to do my MSc, and it has been used primarily for studying at my desk. I noticed the back left hinge coming apart a few months ago, and i had to physically push the laptop back together. I've always been really careful with it and don't understand how this happened. Now it's come apart so far the fan has failed and there is a warning message when i start it up advising me not to use the laptop without an operational fan. I'm essentially laptop less and am going back to do my phd in September. I really need the laptop for molecular modelling. I thought it was just bad luck until i saw the other posts advising this is a common problem with this make and model. I'm really disappointed as with the software and accessories bought on the day my husband spent around Ģ900. For the amount of use it had before breaking, i feel like it was poor value for money. Can anyone advise me how I can get this fixed? I live on the Isle of Wight so i don't even think we have any local repair people ?

After only 5 months after i bought my y470 the left  hinge was loosed. i checked and found out that the  4 screws to attached the hinged were detached because the anchor slots were sheared off. I was wondering how i could have happened inside . My unit has not experienced any fall. i percieve that this was a factory defect of   unchecked loose screws and over tine upon the action of opening and closing , the screws slots gave way. has any body experienced the same problem?? Now i have to replace the whole undercasing because the screw slots are attached to it.. or a wild idea is just to glue the whole anchor assemble of the hinge to the bottom casing by epoxy.. DO YOU HAVE A BETTER IDEA??  please advise if any. thanks

The better option would be to use glue to re attach them. However that might void warranty.

Hi! I'll just need to let off some steam and maybe someone even has a suggestion for me what to try. 1) Apparently, my trackpad is defective. It sometimes fails to recognise clicks and the middle mouse button does not work at all. At frist, I thought this was due to driver issues, but after the firmware upgrade didn't work I came to the conclusion that the hardware is faulty. 2) My TrackPoint doesn't stay where it should stay. The red rubber thing is mounted on a grey plastic cap which should stick to the keyboard. However, my plastic cap always comes off. The TrackPoint always sticks to my finger and then falls out. Seems to be a defective keyboard, although it was never handled inappropriately. 3) The display bezel isn't assembled properly. I've read this from many people here in the forums, so it is a known issue. The thin plastic front cover isn't glued to the bezel and comes off in the right bottom of the screen and at the same point, the bezel once detached from the display lid, but at least now holds after I pressed it back on. You would think Lenovo would provide some business-class support for a business notebook. After calling and providing pictures, I was told to wait for a further email. I didn't receive one until almost two weeks later because they managed to mistype my address three times. I had already provided pictures, but they wanted more. I sent more, sufficient to see the issues. They still told me to send more pictures. Obviously, I al... Read more

Answer:[Rant] T440s - Defective UltraNav, defective keyboard, defective display bezel and horrible support

Well... My organization has just dropped Lenovo ThinkPads from the list of recommended machines. The reasons being dismal ergonomics (the main reason) due to the clickpad and persistent quality problems. We were a ThinkPad-only shop for about 15 years. That is over now. This is very, very sad. I would pay a reasonable premium to get something like W540 with the best display, but the old keyboard (centralized and not a brain-dead positioning like the new one) and proper buttons for the mouse. Lenovo is really, really determined in killing the ThinkPad range. Hence, just return the machine. And buy something else.

To whom it may concern, I am writing this message to inform of you of my displeasure with one of your products. I purchased a HP Envy M6 in August of 2015 at around $700. Last night I went to open my laptop and I heard a loud snap. The noise that was heard was my hinge breaking as well as it snapping the plastic from the bottom base cover. I have now had three HP laptops and all three broke the same way. After doing some research online I found out that this is a common thing for HP laptops, specifically the Envy models. I even noticed that there was a class action lawsuit against HP for their hinges specifically. I went around to repair shops to get a quote on how much it would to be fix and was quoted from $150-$200.I was shocked at the amount quoted as I already had put a large amount of money into the purchase of the product and the product being relatively new. It is unfair to your consumers to have high priced top of the line products break on them on a regular basis. I am inquiring with your company to see if there is anything you can do to help rectify the situation. If nothing can be done I will stay away from all HP products permanently. Please feel to reply with any questions or comments you have about this incident. Thank you in advance for the timely response.

Spent an hour with support, only to tell me that this is not covered under warranty, even though there is still another 6 months left under Mfg warranty. The hinge is cracked, which in turn has cracked the cover of the LCD. In order to close the laptop, we have to squeeze the hinge with the screen, and slowly close. From reading through posts, it appears that Dell has ongoing issues with hinges. I totally understand and would expect a two year old device not to be covered, but at 6 months? And a broken hinge is not covered? Anyone have any thoughts?

Answer:Inspiron 5558 - 6 Months Old - BROKEN HINGE

Nope. Nothing. I had many calls with support and they still insisted that it's normal wear and tear on the machine. I purchased through Costco, and they tried calling support and received the same answer. Long story short, I will never purchase a Dell device again. Ever.

Hi,I have the same problem that previous posts have described with my HP Spectre XT's left hinge. I am SUPER careful with my notebook. It hardly ever leaves the  house, I am the only person who uses it - very gently.About 11 months ago, the screen went black in this same bottom left hand area and HP repaired it under warranty.  I bought it from John Lewis who offer a 2 year warranty. However, it is now out of warranty and the hinge has caused the front plastic to lift off and the back to separate. I cannot close the lid for fear that the whole thing will fall apart. I did wonder whether the repair was guaranteed for a year - any ideas? How I can get it repaired please? This was a really expensive machine and this quality doesn't live up to expectations.Help!

I looked on the forums and someone had the SAME problem as me. I'm not sure if it has been resolved but here is the link: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Hinge-issue-with-HP-Spectre-x36... Same thing happened to me. I had it for a month and was very happy with it. Then, when I was closing it today, there was a low, creaking sound. I opened it back up to see that the right hinge has been scratched. I looked inside and saw something poking out, like a piece of metal or something, that wasn't there before.  I really want to get the whole laptop replaced because I took really good care of it and can't stand scratches or marks. However, my warranty ran not long ago so I'm not sure if HP will still fix this for me.

Hi, I have just noticed that the left-hand hinge on my HP Spectre laptop is not moving correctly and has become slack. This is the second problem I have had with this high specification and expensive laptop. My first purchase needed to be returned for replacement due to a known graphics issue. I tried to sending the question to the HP SupportDesk but the online tool checked my device warrantly and responed that my warranty had expired by 20 days. Can you please confirm if this hinge problem is known issue and is there any way to confirm if HP will help with the repair of the device. If possible could you please provide contact details for HP SupportDesk?

Question: spectre x360

The 1-minute hold of the power switch worked for me, but it is darn hard to do because of the somewhat inconvenient power switch position - and if you waver for a moment then the 60 seconds starts again. I found it easiest to turn the 360 on its side on a table and then it is easier to hold the switch down for the full minute uninterrupted. This for me only points out the importance for manufacturers to provide a HARD RESET capability through an unfolded paperclip or the like. C'mon guys, give us what we need to maintain our products!

Question: HP Spectre x360

Upon opening the notebook on my desk, a series of cracks surfaced on the upper-left bezel of the screen, and extended across the screen. I keep my notebook for the most part on my desk, and when I travel, I put in the HP leather case, and in a well-paded bag. I've owned this notebook since August last year, and it has performed excellently besides the occaisonal loud fan noise and overheat.  I talked with a helpful HP Customer Support Rep, and I was told that if I were to send in my notebook, and screen damage will be presumed inflicted by the customer. I have also been in contact with the HP Executive board, but their reply did not grant me any help. I would like to know if I can send in my notebook for a proper examination, or if I can speak with a case manager on this issue. I really do not want to file a complaint to the BBB, but I feel that will be necessary if the material defect is to be assumed a damage on my part. Thank you in advance. I will include pictures of my display, as well as pictures of the siding to prove the lack of physical/blunt damage.

HP's lack of quality control is completely unacceptable and inexcusable, especially given the cost of the Spectre x360 line.I went through 5 (FIVE!) 13-inch Spectre x360's. All but one exhibited very loose trackpads (even very light taps will physically move the trackpad down and have an annoying loose click sound when taking your finger off of it). The one with an okay trackpad had USB-C issues. The trackpad -- arguable THE most important part of a laptop -- now feels like garbage. Hell, there are $200 Windows laptops and Chromebooks that have better trackpads than this $1,200 thing. It's extremely frustrating and disappointing. I REALLY wanted for the Spectre x360 to be my laptop (especially considering there's no other 2-in-1 out there that looks this good and is priced as nicely). Looks like the Lenovo Yoga 720 is next on my list. Just wish it had IR cameras for facial logins.

Question: HP Spectre x360

Hi, I have an HP Spectre x360 that is a year and 5 months old. I was running it off the battery when suddenly a whole lot of smoke started coming from underneath the notebook and a smell of burnt plastic filled the air. Reading the forum I found that this is not something new to these HP Spectre x360 notebooks. Its it really possibile that HP have not activated a support program for who owns such an expensive notebook. My notebook is out of warrenty but I honestly think it was a close call, i was working on a wooden table when it started burning. Now I have a 1250 euro paper weight. I did try to contact support and was immediatly cut off once i gave them my serial number, or offered to pay for support. Will paying 30 euros actually achieve something, ie will they attempt a repair or will it be 30 euros just to be told over the phone that its something that simply cannot be repaired. Thanks

Question: HP Spectre x360

New owner of HP Spectre x360 - 13-4003dx here. I want to ask if the bottom of the laptop, the area above the fan openings where the FCC info/text lies, is supposed to creak when I press it slightly. I first heard this noise when I took my laptop out of the sleeve and held that area. At first I thought it was just rubbing against the sleeve, but after further examination, that is not the case. If this occurs with other models of the Spectre, it is a bad build quality, I am not sure which component is under there, but I want to know if the creaking noise is normal with only a slight press along the text area. Thanks.

I have the same problem but in the front, in the back of the touchpad... really annoying. looks like the lid doesn't have nothing to lay on and the aluminium is very thin. poor quality for such expensive machine.

Hello, Last winter purchased a convertible lenovo laptop. The first one had faulty hinges, I had it replaced on the same day I brought it in and the second one had faulty hinges and a faulty touchpad. So, I decided to ditch the cheaper computers and splurged on a HP spectre x360 from Best Buy. I live 200 kilometres away from large retail stores like this so getting back and forth is quite difficult, Staples was very understanding about the Lenovo laptops, however Best Buy told me there was nothing I could do when I described the problems I was having with my brand new HP. Several months went by and I avoided using the computer as much as possible in order to avoid facing the mistake I made in purchasing it. Eventually, my old computer became completely obsolete and I had no choice but use this HP.  My problems were not limited in any way. They ranged from an extremely annoying touchpad that sounded loose and made strange noises, the fact that the screen was closing on an odd angle, and the fact the the screen could barely stay open. A slight touch or even shifting the laptop would cause the screen to move. I could forgive these flaws if I had abused this computer or if it had received heavy usage, however I barely even turned the thing on. I contacted HP support and I must admit that they were polite, friendly and had my return materials sent very quickly.  My first bad sign involving the shipping process was the fact tha... Read more

Just finished setting up my second Spectre x360 15t. The first one was a driver and screen flickering mess. As I'm finishing putting it through it's paces by running audio with a few tunes through Spotify and then over to Netflix to check dialogue, I've become aware that the fan has been running for some time. When I picked it up to feel the underside I was quite dismayed to feel how hot this thing was. Not cozy up to the fire hot but call the fire department hot. It was on a Xpad which was starting to get a bit toasty itself. No way this could ever sit directly on my lap. I know this is an ultrabook. I know i7 processors run warm under load but this fella gets HOT. I'm coming off a Spectre 13t with an i5 which is just as tight a unit as this one, but it never reached this kind of hot. I'm humorously concerned if I can put this on my desk while under heavy load without melting the finish off. Is anyone else experiencing similar circumstances? I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I'm looking for a 13-inch laptop for myself and have narrowed it down to these two models. Need your help in choosing :)
I'm thinking about such config for both: i7-7560U + Iris Plus Graphics 640 + 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD. As for the screen, I'm still on the fence about it, not sure if I want the best possible res (QHD for Dell, 4K for HP) or the best battery life by going FullHD. Can you guys share your battery life experience with the best screens for these? I'm going to use it primarily for browsing / office work / coding (VS and VS Code) / light photo editing (Lightroom, Photoshop)
For the x360, I like Windows Hello camera (and webcam at the top ) and build quality. And it's a bit cheaper.
For the XPS 13, it's battery life and better port selection
Let me know what you think

I bought a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad T460S in Nov 2016. This is supposed to be their premium business laptop range. I uses it daily, simple computer work. Lately it starts to have problem hibernating and waking from sleep/hibernation. Yesterday the steel left hinge suddenly broke. I contacted the Lenovo Support today and they replied : The three year international Warranty does not cover the hinges. It's like you buy a new car, then the hinge of your drive breaks and it's not covered by warranty? What kind of logic is that? They want to charge me for the repair. I am getting a quote from them, this is probably the last Thinkpad I will ever buy from Lenovo! I am getting a quote from them. I wonder if we can get the part myself and attempt a self repair. But this is deeply disappointing!

Hi.  After looking over some of the post, it looks like hinges are a problem for Lenovo.  My U450P is less than 4 months old and the hinge popped as I was trying to close it one evening last week.  (No I didn't drop it and have only taken out of the house 2-3 times.)  I didn't continue to try and close the lid, because it looked like it was pulling the top corner apart. Anyway after calling support and then driving an hour away to nearest FedEx Express, I got a call today - it will cost me $180 to repair.  Of course I had to close it to put it in the shipping box, and as it closed the broken hinge did pull apart the top slightly.  They consider that accidental damage and assume I dropped it. I was also admonished for not getting the extra warranty coverage.  Shouldn't a computer last more than 3 1/2 months without having to pay for extra warranties!!!  It seems from reading these boards that Lenovo hinges are an issue.  I certainly had no problems with previous laptops. So - am I just stuck, or has anyone found help with their hinge situations. thanks!

Hi all, i'm currently having some issues with the T420 in regards to the hinges. I got it on April 2011 and was reasonably happy with it, OK there was a stuck pixel but its not directly in line of vision so I can live with that. However after 5 months of relatively normal usage my hinges have become really loose, so much that at some angles it can't support the weight of the lid. It's disappointing considering the hinge on my 4 year old T61 is still relatively strong in comparison. I have 3 years warranty on the system so I thought I might as well call Lenovo Support (UK) to get it fixed, however the Lenovo rep stated that it can't be replaced under warranty as its within "reasonable wear and tear" and therefore, require a fee if I want to send it in for replacement. For sure I understand if it's 2 years old or something but 5 months? Something is not right. I was able to bide some time with the Lenovo rep to keep my case number open for a few days in regards to this, but I would like some clarification on the issue with the warranty on hinges. Reading posts on this forum indicates that the hinges are covered under warranty (ref) as long it hasn't been involved in heavy damage which mine hasn't. I also uploaded some videos of the issues i'm facing so you guys can have an idea. Is it unreasonable for me to get this fixed under warranty? I would really like some help on this, particularly from the senior mods or staff who can help me on my issue since I only have... Hi All,I have a Spectre X360 (13-4014TU)  that runs the Intel i7-5500U , 256GB ADATA SSD, 8Gb RAM and Win 10-64. It is a great little unit and has become my main work horse for my business. As I am running out of Disk space, I wanted to upgrade the SSD to 512GB but I have noticed that Intel have launched a 540S Series 1tb M.2 drive for a little bit more than the cost of the Samsung 512gb  unit. However, I want to know if the upgrade will work before I invest the $ required. The two questions that I can't get an answer to are:1. The intel unit is double sided. Its thickness is 3.58mm  compared to the 2.32mm thickness for single sided SSD - WILL IT FIT in the X360 ssd gap? 2. Will the  BIOS of the x360 address the 1tb memory? The x360 has the F.32 BIOS running on the 802D 58.51 system board. Has anyone else experienced fitting a 1tb to an X360? Any recommendations? ThanksFrank

I have the i5 version, and I experience the same heat issues as you guys described. Also, the area right above the F1-F5 keys gets really really hot after running anything even mildly graphics intense. Even simple 2d flash games will cause the fan to throttle up and that area will become extremely hot. It has been like this since the beginning. Other than the heat issue, I honestly have no qualms with this ultrabook.

Hello, I just received my i7 model of the HP Spectre X360 today and after a short period of use on the computer the upper left corner of the body of the computer becomes very hot, so much that resting it on part of my body becomes unbearable. I had read up on the notebook before buying it and the only mention of any issue of this sort was in a pros/cons list in one review that merely stated that "the bottom runs warm." Thus I was not expecting this level of heat while using the laptop rather casually, as the most intensive thing I was doing was streaming videos. Is this normal for what I am doing on this laptop? It's not the worst problem but it is definitely worrisome as I am planning on using this laptop for the next four years or so. Thank you all in advance!

Unfortunately our machine is 1 year + 1 month old and they won't give us a break on the repair. They estimate that it would be $300. I agree with many folks on this topic that this is a design issue and they need to do a recall instead of having their customers pay to replace the faulty parts.

Greetings, I just bought the HP spectre x360 with the i7 processor, and I've tried over 100 times to register a right click on the trackpad and it has failed to do every single time. I have read several articles complaning about the width being the problem to the right click, but mine has failed to register. period. I went into the control panel to try to disable it then enable once again in hopes to it working, but nothing has changed. I have only been able to register a "right click" by holding down on the touchscreen which is fairly inconvienent. I would like to see this problem fixed because I do enjoy everything else about this laptop, but that is a major flaw for me. Thank you.
