Offline files disappers when connected to new shared folder

Question: Offline files disappers when connected to new shared folder

Hi Guys,

I am migrating my user's home folders from one storage server to another storage server. We have offline files sync enabled and users use to work at work in offline mode and the files/folders sync when they connect to the company's network.
I have done some testing before migrating and found an issue that need assistance from your guys.

I pick a test user say "Testuser01" and logout him out from the system. I have copied all home drive stuff from Sharedserever-1 (Old) to Sharedserever-2 (New) for test user and make the required changes in AD profile and GPO for drive mapping. As
the Testuser01's documents pointing to H-drive (My Documents) are available offline on laptop in Documents folder. Now I have worked offline as "tesetuser01" and created some test files but when I logged in and connected
with my company's network H-drive is it correctly pointing to new Sharedserever (i.e. Sharedserever-2) and Documents path also redirected to the new server location. However the files created in offline mode were disappeared instead of sync with
the new Sharedserever.
I could not figure out why and I don't know if it something with CSC - Client-Side Caching folder ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Offline files disappers when connected to new shared folder

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey Guys,

I've got a problem getting offline folder permissions to stick after restarts in our domain. Here's what I do:

Go to MMC>shared folders>shares>C$ (as an example)>properties>offline settings> and then I change "only files and folders users specify..." to "All files...". Apply and done.

It works like a champ for what I'm trying to do (enable Restore Previous Versions of files to actually work- I learned that RPV fix from another thread here at seven), but after each restart the settings are restored to default. I'm assuming there's a group policy I can implement that'll auto-set those permissions permanently but I can't find any 'offline' shared folder permissions options anywhere. Thanks for any help.

Answer:GP for permanently changing shared folder offline permissions?

Sorry, forgot to mention the environment. We're running 100% Windows 7 workstations and an SBS 2011 server.

The whole point of my question is to ultimately enable a WORKING 'restore previous versions' feature for each workstation across the domain. As far as I can see, after much testing, with the setting I'm trying to permanently enable turned on, restore points actually do back up files for RPV... and with it off, RPV is totally useless on every workstation.

Where I work we have a user who is in a remote office connected via a site to site VPN to our main office but it's over a somewhat slow link (1mbit). Since she's a laptop user we have offline files enabled on her laptop so that all of her stuff gets synced back to our corp network, it generally works well when she's in the main office or on the road and just connects to our VPN to sync. However, it seems that when she's in the remote office and is connected her laptop will end up connecting to our file server back here, which is all well and good except that when she goes to browse her files, etc it takes an extremely long time because it's doing all the reading from our main office. I know there are some GPO things we can do but it takes awhile to put those in place, I've been looking for a way to essentially force that folder to think it's working offline so she can do what she needs to do in a timely manner, but I haven't been able to find a way how yet and was wondering if anyone here knew. I know there's a way in Vista, but she's running XP.

Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone,

I'm using a laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed) as a DVR and media streamer to all other devices in the house.
My TV recordings are recorded into a temporary folder and when the recording is finished the program moves the files into the My Videos folder.

The My Videos folder is shared so we can watch the recordings from the Xbox downstairs or other Windows 7 devices in the house.
This worked pretty well in the past but for some reason new recordings (or downloads) aren't shared by default anymore. All files have a small lock icon (shared with nobody) and I have to manually share new files within an already shared folder.

This is pretty annoying and takes away the convenience.

I would appreciate any tip to fix this problem to have all files in the shared folder(s) shared by default.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:New files aren't shared in shared folder

It's easy once you know how, just right click the C:/Video's folder and choose properties, Security tab then Advanced button, then just put a check mark where it says "Replace all Child Object Permission Entries with Inheritable Permissions Entries from this Object, then hit Apply, OK....this will fix the problem you described.

I am still having issues getting offline files to work correctly. I have a notebook running Windows 7 Pro 64, that syncs with a desktop also running Win7 Pro 64. After a clean install, due to the many issues I've had dealing with Offline Files before, I just synced 1 folder to see if it would work. And it did. Windows 7 synced the folder and it was made available offline. I could easily make folders available offline by simply right-clicking on a folder and clicking the option "Always available offline".  I was also able to successfully sync my Documents, Desktop and Favorites folders (using folder redirection).
Oddly, when I tried to make a new folder available offline a few weeks later, the option is gone for any other folders (new or previously existing). And when I right-click on a folder (or file) and choose Properties, the Offline Files tab no longer shows as well.
I have a fairly simple home network setup. My notebook computer syncs with a desktop PC also running Windows 7 Professional 64 (I call this the "Server" PC). Nothing has changed network-wise or configuration wise on either PC. I haven't messed with any network settings or played around with offline files settings since the last successful sync. No new networking hardware has been added either.

I pinned the Files folder in my account to the Windows 10 Start menu, and also saved this folder as a favorite in Edge, which is my default browser. But after closing Edge, when I then click the tile in the start menu, or after opening Edge, if I click the OneDrive link in the favorites bar, OneDrive opens my Shared folder rather than the desired Files folder. To see the Files folder, I can click "OneDrive" in the menu bar. Moreover, after the Files folder has been opened, if I then add a tab and click on OneDrive in the favorites bar, OneDrive correctly opens the Files folder, and will continue to operate this way (the correct way) as long as I don't close the browser. When I saved my OneDrive Files folder as a favorite in Firefox, I experienced the same problem. So the problem does not appear to be related to Edge.
How can I make always open in the Files Folder the first time?

HiWhen I log into a laptop which is connected to the network my home folder's Offline status is: Online.  When I disconnect the network cable the laptop detects the change and the Offline status changes to: Offline (not connected).  So far all is well. When I then reconnect the network cable the laptop detects it has a connection again (the icon in the notifications area changes to reflect this and I can get on the internet).  However, the home folder status remains: Offline (not connected). This is causing major synchronisation problems and resulting in lost data.  Can anyone explain this behaviour? We are using Vista and the home folder is on a Windows 2008 Server. Thanks,Matt

Answer:Files remain 'Offline (not connected)' after connection to the network

Hi Matt,
Thank you for posting.
Lets? try the following to narrow down the issue.
1.    Please check if you can access the share with ?\\server\share folder? after it reconnects.
2.    If there are other computers on the network, please check if the issue occurs on them as well.
Please also reproduce the issue and capture a screenshot on the Sync Center:
1.    Connect to the network and ensure that the home folder's Offline status is: Online.
2.    Disconnect the network cable.
3.    Reconnect the network cable and ensure that you can connect to Internet.
4.    Please open Sync Center and capture a screenshot.
5.    You may also capture a screenshot where you found the home folder status remains: Offline (not connected).
How to Capture a screenshot
1)   Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2)   Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter.
3)   In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save".
4)   The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot".
5)   Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click ?Desktop? on the left pane and then click "Save".

I have all 4 PC's in the office using Windows 7 Pro. I have one computer that is designated to house my share folder for scanning documents and attaching them to our management system.  We are finding that multiple problems occur - not at once and at
different times .  Sometimes, the document within the shared folder called "IMAGEBATCH" will not delete.  Sometimes that document deletes, and then re-appears within the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes the document will not
scan through the network to the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes we get an error saying we "don't have permission to delete this file".  These circumstances occur on all computers, including the computer that houses the original file IMAGEBATCH.
Sometimes in the day, each computer that is supposedly looking at the same IMAGEBATCH folder see different files.
Restarting the computer clears the problems, but then start right back up at irregular intervals, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the middle of the day.
I did find a duplicate file named IMAGEBATCH on the "C" drive of that PC, so I deleted that, but the symptoms are still there.  This is the only shared folder in our entire network.  What can I be missing?  I have checked to make
sure it is a share folder, all the permissions are in place, and that we all can see the folder through the network.  What am I missing?  I am the owner and administrato... Read more

Ok, last topic on this...for now...

I have a couple users who use laptops at home and at work to conduct business on. I'd like for them to be able to have access to all their files while they're off the network and then when they come back on the network, the files that have changed are transmitted to the servers. I'm assuming this is how Offline files works but how does one implement that half of the equation after setting up folder redirection on Server 2012 servers with clients using a mixture of Windows 7/8/8.1

Our users "my documents" folders are set up for redirection to \\ourserver\users

We have an XP based machine ( machine X ) that was used by person A, each time they logged off it synchronized as expected.

However machine X is now used by another user B.

Whenever user B logs off user A's offline files still keep synchronising, have deleted all the files from the offline folder I still cannot see a way of stopping user A's files and starting the new user B's files sync.

User A's files were accounting type files and are sensitive files that should not be viewed by others, however by still sync to the offline files folder they can be easily viewed.

Any thoughts as how I can stop this and re-direct the new users files to sync as I need to release this pc for general use.

Answer:Offline files / folder sync

You need to unmark the old users' folders for offline use, apply, reboot and make sure that the machine can see the domain and be made happy on that front, log in as the new user and then mark those new folders for offline use.

Recently a coworker was trying to CUT/PASTE files from their My Documents folder to another location. During the procedure our file server crashed and shutdown. Their My Documents folder is a re-directed and synchronized folder.

I was able to restore the users entire home drive from the previous nights backup to another location. To date the user has been working from this secondary location but wishes to have all the files moved back to their My Documents so that synchronization can occur for offline access.

I am unsure of how to go about doing this safely.

I'm thinking that I should re-initialize the users Offline Cache and Database first, delete what is in My Documents now, and then copy the restored data back to My Documents. Then, at that point in time re-enable offline files and perform a sync.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

I've mapped some folders in my laptop (Windows 7 Professional 64-bit).
I wanted them offline so I chose make available offline. After some days I've removed 'Make available offline'.
Now, the problem is when I open a file in shared folder for modification it's taking a local copy the changes are not reflecting in server.
What I dont understand is when I removed offline, how am getting a local copy instead of the files in server.

Using folder redirects with a DFS share, and have run into a bizarre problem.
DFS Namespace Server and file server that hosts the DFS folder are both WS2012. Problem clients are both Win 7. Non-problem clients are Win 7 and Win 10.
A user (only one) has folders redirected with no issues from one computer she uses. On two other computers (and only on those 2), Contacts and Searches redirect, but none of the others (AppData\Roaming, Desktop, Documents, etc.).
Meanwhile, other users on the two problem computers have no issues redirecting.
All users have the same Folder Redirection GPO.

I tried searching for "offline" in the forum and scanned through the 250 odd titles that came up but could not find reference to relocating the offline files folder. I frequently take an image of the system drive as a backup but, with an ever increasing offline folder (windows\csc), this is getting unworkable so I want to move the folder to my data drive (D:\).

I've tried using a symbolic link to a folder on the C drive (as I've successfully done with the OneDrive folder) but win10 seems to object and stops working.

Surprisingly, with google there's loads of references to doing this with previous versions of windows but I can't find anything Win10 specific. Does anybody know of a reliable way of relocating the csc folder?

You need to ensure that Fast User Switching is disabled:

Also, make sure you are enabling offline files on the computer that is accessing the network share, the one that does not have a copy of the files locally.

I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine.

The specific error messages are:

- AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL."
- ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file."

This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related?
Does anyone know what the problem might be, and how I could fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:W8.1: Can't open files on SMB folder shared by a Mac

Welcome to Eight Forums,

The upgrade seems to be an issue in your case. I'd suggest for you to download the latest driver from the manufacturer's site for your network adapter, see if that helps. I don't think that there's a way to revert your Maverick's SMB version.

Please post an update or your progress.

Yes, your friend can add files to your shared folder, provided you have the proper permission settings for the folder set up. On your PC, go to Onedrive and navigate to the folder you have shared, and click on "share", then "invite people", then add the people you want to allow, then change "recipients can only view" to "recipients can edit". The situation: At my work our My Documents folders are all automatically redirected to user folder on servers, which is great. The bad, is that one of the LAN admins I work with is insisting that for folder redirection to work, the Offline Files feature must be activated. This causes all sorts of problems with folders and programs that run from the network becoming unavailable if there's a hicup in communication with the server. Getting the XP workstations to stop treating the files as offline is a PITA and drains alot of my time and the user's time.

Before this LAN admin told me to not disable it, I would disable the offline files feature on the workstation and not have to worry about this happening again. We have no reason to use offline files, (even per the admin) other than he insists that redirection won't work without it. The workstations where I'd already disabled offline files not only still redirect the My Documents folder just fine, but they are immune from the irritatingly frequent habit of XP to start treating files as offline.

The request: Does anybody know of an official Microsoft document where it explicitly states that Offline Files does not have to be active for folder redirection to work? Apparently the machines I've done this on that still work perfectly are not enough proof, and I can't find any official source that he might beleive.

Answer:WinXP folder redirection - Offline files required?

I've never heard that you need Offline Files to make folder redirection work. Here is a link to a microsoft document describing Folder Redirection. Offline files are no where to be found in the article.

Check out this document too. In particular,

Folder Redirection and Offline Files

The Offline Files technology applies to any mounted or mapped drive that contains documents or data that a user might want to use offline. Offline Files does not depend on Folder Redirection. It is set up and configured on shared network servers separately from the Folder Redirection snap-in. Offline Files enables the user to do useful work even when the user is not connected to the network, for example, on a portable computer or in the event of router failure.Click to expand...

From the netbook, I can see the desktop on my network and also the shared folders, but when I try to open them I am told I have insufficient authorization to so so. I have checked the authorizations on the desktop side and can see that "Everyone" has permission to open these folders for reading, and that the authorization extends also to subfolders and files.

I've been trying all day to resolve this problem and would appreciate any help.

When I set up these permissions, why doesn't Windows warn me that there's something else that will impede what I'm trying to do?

You might try going into the Security tab of the Desktop's main drive or folder you want to share then add "Everyone" there as well. Security tab>Edit button>Add button>type Everyone for object name, apply, ok and so forth.

However, when I move (Ctrl+X) a file to the shared folder on the pc with win7, the file does not apear when I go to the shared folder from the XP pc.

Anyone knows what Im doing wrong?

BY THE WAY, is there a way to share the entire C drive or we are strict to the public folders? Its wierd that I gave full access permissions to the C drive, yet an error occurs while trying to access from XP. Only the public folders can be accessed.

You still need to allow premission to access the shared files on the Win7 machine. Just set up permissions on the Win7 machine by going to "Network and sharing center" and then to the left choose "Change Advance sharing settings". The select the settings in the pictures below.

You should also have access to the entire C drive once you do that.

I've been using my XP machine as my file server and it works perfectly.

Each of these folders contain two .vbs script files all with weird names like "logo_anim_loop" and "nick on amp". I have no idea what these files are. They can not be deleted. Can anyone tell me what these might be and why they are there or how to delete them?
(I posted this in the XP section but got no response, so I'm trying here.)

Hello all, thanks for your help.

Goal :
Sharing a Vista 64 Home Premium Folder with an XP Laptop.

Problem :
XP can view folders, but not files, in the Vista Shared Folder. Files that were in the folder when sharing was setup in Vista are accessible, but new files are not displayed. New Folders do display, however.

System Setup :
MSHOME network, Vista private network sharing of a single directory. Vista connected by cable, XP laptop by Wireless.

Already Done :
- Triple-Checked Permissions (guest, everyone, etc.)
- Normal Vista Sharing configuration in place
- Checked through specific settings for 'guest' and 'everyone' access of the folder, including 'read files..'
- Checked the net in luck

The folder I'm sharing is a P2P download folder. Sharing doesn't work properly when the program is on or off, so it doesn't seem to affect anything.

Other things I've done :
- Turned 'indexing' on
- Made sure 'read only' was not enabled under folder settings.

Answer:Vista Shared Folder Files not Updating

Update :

The P2P stuff isn't a factor - created a new directory and shared - same problem.

I'm wondering if it may have something to do with XP. (service pack 3)

Hi all,

This is a problem that's been bothering me for days. I use an older computer (Windows XP Professional, SP2) that's relatively slow, but has a decent amount of disk space to store some of my files. While I store files on there, I prefer to access the files using my newer computer (Windows XP Home, SP2) since it's faster to extract/unzip files.

I can access all the folders & subfolders in the Shareddocs directory of my old computer perfectly, *except* ZIP/RAR files. Once I unzip the archive, my new computer can access all the files. But if I try to use my new computer to unzip the archives, it's telling me that it cannot find the file & that I don't have permissions for it.

So far, I've tried unchecking the "Simple File Sharing" box, and checking the permissions, and I have given everyone Full Control on my old computer. But I am still unable to extract/view the archives.

Any idea what might be wrong? I can just unzip everything on the old computer, but it's so horrendously slow I'd like some sort of solution to this.

Thanks in advance!

Last year I upgraded my old Small business server 2003 to server 2012 standard and shortly after had issues with some of the offline files on the server, we use almost all laptops here that users take home at night and we have folder redirection set up through
group policy for the my documents, and pictures folders stored in \\server\Network\users\ and these folders sync locally, However we also have network drives set up pointing to \\server\Network\ and \\server\network\scans as drives N: and S:.

Files in these 2 network drives somehow got set to be available offline and caused issues with versioning and  people coming in and finding themselves in "offline mode". Thinking this to be user error I updated group policy to employ these
2 policies:
Remove "Make Available Offline" command Enabled
Remove "Work offline" command Enabled
Today however I found that a laptop that had been deployed After all of this had been put in place was having the same problem, with files on the N: drive showing as trying to sync outside of the users folder

Is there a way that I can lock this down to only sync the items in the user folder for documents and pictures? Outside of that folder we have other company documents and databases that get problematic if they try to sync changes between users and it's causing
a lot of issues.

Trying to find a solution to this issue.

2 XP Media Center SP3 PCs connected via Ethernet to router. PC A has Shared Documents folder with permissions set to allow 'Everyone' Full Control. Only Windows Firewall onboard, NOD32 virus scanner. PC B can see/open files from share on PC A, but any attempts to move or copy result in error message "your current security settings do not allow this action". Both PCs have IE6, File & Print Sharing enabled and turning off Windows Firewall doesn't change anything. What else can I try? Thanks.

Answer:Moving/copying files from shared folder causes error

Make sure you have the permissions set on both the Security tab as well as the Sharing tab.

On the shared folder security permissions, make sure that you go to the Advanced settings and check the box that tells it to replace the permissions on child objects as well.

Additional Note:
Performing a net user * /DELETE has no effect on the share that is not working properly. Also when performing a new use the share does not appear in the list.

I keep having a re-occurring issue.

I start by creating a shared folder on a Windows 2000 Server. From my Windows XP Pro laptop I'm able to access the files in the shared folder. At some point either from logging off the network or network changes that occur over night, I lose share. By losing the share I mean that I can access the folder that is shared but it does not show any files in the folder even though there are files. If I turn off the server, I get the same empty folder results. I've tried registering and flushing the DNS several times and reassigning my IP address. I'm at a loss as to why the share will not show any files. If I create a new share on the same server it will work fine until I leave for the day and return the next day. I would like to understand more about how shares are created and handled in Windows and then I might be able to figure out why this problem is occurring.

I curently use a shared folder on my desktop to store all my music collection that then allows me to either use WMP on my desktop or WMP / Itunes on my laptop. I am currently trying to add all the missing artwork. a lot of my artwork can be seen in WMP but not itunes. I know how to get the album art into itunes but when i look at the shared network folder on the laptop it doesnt show any files except for the ripped music files. On the desktop i can see the all the files. I guess there is a setting to allow this but I can't seem to find it! Desktop is XP, laptop is vista. All ideas welcome, many thanks :-)

I've been using file and printer sharing for quite a while on various home networks, but this problem has me completely stumped.

I have one folder on each of 2 Windows XP Pro machines shared. I can access some of the files in this shared folder but not others. The problem is not specific to size (some are larger, others are small) or type (some are EXE's, others are .TXT's). I simply get the "Access denied" error when trying to open, run, or copy some of the files.

I've tried deleting the folder and re-creating it, and that doesn't work. I've disabled Windows firewall on both systems. That didn't work either.

We have few laptops (windows 7 pro) for sales rep and Offline file enable to sync their documents which are on SBS 2011 server.
I don't know why it try to sync some other users (My video , My music , etc ) files and error says "access denied" or

“The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”

we have tried many times and confirm there's no one using those files but still same error
I found this article on forumbut not sure how much this valid to SBS 2011, and if it's known issue why not there's fix patch yet from Microsoft

On the 2003 server I had to ADD this reg entry and set it to 0:
OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 0 (not disabled)

And then Changed this entry to 1:

EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 1 (enabled)

Hi Scott
I found the problem and use following method to fix it

Hello everyone, I am having a weird issue with OneDrive. I have gone thru the update and selected the folders to sync (god, I miss the place holders). Now every time I'm offline I try to access a file in those folders I get a error "File system error (-2143326205) ". I have the checked if the folders are up to date and all files are downloaded and they are. I am able to access the files if I'm online. Anyone else having this issue?
I should also mention that I am using a SP3 i3 and I have my OneDrive folder in on my SD card mounted into a NTFS folder on C:

It sounds like they are spying on us and some bug happens when I try to work offline. Very annoyign in an airplain for example, if I can not read my PDFs.
Also SP3 i3, no OneDrive, SD card mounted NTFS at C - all standard as shipped.

I ran into an issue with a user's computer. Initially, he was experiencing problems with the computer running slow. A previous technician diagnosed the issue and decided to run Combofix to clear any issues that might be causing this. However, in running Combofix, the files in the folder C:/windows/csc folder/d6 or %systemroot%/csc folder/d6 were treated as malware and moved to C:/Qoobox/Quarantine/C/Windows/csc folder/d6 and renamed with the extension .vir. In doing so, the user has lost some of his data. Although the data represents files on a share drive on a server, in syncing the share drive's files in order to make them available offline, some of those files were lost. Well, at least that's how it seems as the user's files seemed to have disappeared around the same time Combofix was run.

We've tried a system restore to the day BEFORE Combofix was run to no avail. We've also tried to use batch file renaming programs as we made copies of the files in the Quarantine in order to get them out of quarantine and rename them without the .vir extension, put them back in their original folder and resync, but that did not work. The Windows resynchronization process reports that some of the files can't be restored because the user is not connected to the server, even though he is. Nonetheless, after that attempt, the files that were missing are still missing.

The files themselves vary from Excel spreadsheets to Word documents. The scan was perfo... Read more

I'm encountering a problem on different computers.
Internet Explorer 11 and Edge are not able to open files from a shared folder located on the same computer.
For example, let's say I typed this "\\\folder_1\DOC_FILE.doc" on the address bar.
The browser then shows : "This page can't be displayed".
When I display more information, the error "INET_E_RESOURCE_NOT_FOUND" appears.
I have already tried to uncheck "Enable TCP Fast open" and it is still not working.
It seems like this problem cannot be reproduced on all IE11/EDGE browsers, and can be encountered on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Any ideas ?
Best regards

I have shared one folder and in security I added "everyone" and given full permission (full control, write, etc.)

But still I cannot access some pdf files in the folder from another computer. I can open the folder but when I try to open the pdf file I'm getting some permission error. Then I went to the first computer I selected all pdf files >> right click >> properties >> I changed security and added everyone there. Then I could open the pdf files from another computer.

Now the problem is every time when I add some files in the shared folder. I have to select all the files inside and add permission even though the folder itself is given full permission. I wonder why is it so?

Answer:shared folder with full permission cannot access files inside

If the same users access this folder. Add each person individually with Full Control rather then the Everyone Group to the permissions of the folder. Or You can add the users to the Power Users Group. Then allow the Power Users Group to have Full control.

Hello My roomate has created a folder on his desktop called "music1", and the permissions are set for full access/shared etc on his computer. I can access many other shared folders on his computer with my pc no problem. I can even listen to other music files on his computer in other shared folders. For some reason or other I cannot play his music files or copy his music files when trying to access the music1 folder on his desktop. If i'm thinking correctly the root folder must be shared to allow access to subfolders, but in this case...the shared folder (music1) is the root folder that was created on his desktop. any ideas?

I have a computer running Vista Home Premium. On it, I have a folder shared read-only over the network as "downloads."

I can access the folder from other computers on the LAN, using \\computer\downloads. My problem is, sometimes the browsing computer (an XP Pro SP3 machine) will get an outdated list of the directory.

For instance, I have added many files in the past couple of weeks. Yet, for some reason, even today one of the computers would show the most recent file as being from late January. I've tried refreshing and shift-refreshing. Doesn't help.

What's weird is that this behavior seems to vary from client computer to client computer. One of my XP Pro SP3 machines will have the most-recent list of files, and the other one will still be a little bit behind, not showing the newest files.

I can't figure this out! I would think that the problem must lie on the side of the client, yet I have never had this problem previously in all my years of XP-to-XP file sharing.

Is there some sort of network cache present in XP that can be cleared? Or any other ideas on how to solve this?

Answer:Browsing shared folder over LAN sometimes shows outdated list of files; sometimes OK

It's not unnatural for what shows in My Network Places (XP) or Network (Vista) to be out of date, but usually not that out of date. In My Network Places click 'view workgroup computers' and you should force an update.

On any (properly working) network one computer becomes the Master Browser. It determines what's on the network and periodically updates the other computers.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the XP subforum or the Vista/7 one, as it relates to both. Hope I made the right choice. :-)

My problem is this: I have a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop (recently upgraded from Vista Home Premium) with a C:\downloads\ folder that is shared over the network as "downloads."

On a second computer, an XP computer, one I set up the correct sharing permissions (that is, to give access to Computer 2's username), I can then browse to \\desktop\downloads\.

The problem is this: The file list show in \\desktop\downloads\ is outdated, and many files and folders are missing. There is nothing special about these files or folders. They're not hidden or anything.

For instance, opening up C:\downloads\ on my desktop shows a folder with 3,118 items -- files and folders.

Accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from another computer shows 111 items.

Interestingly, accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from the desktop shows the correct amount: 3,118 items.

I have tried refreshing the file list, obviously, from the second computer. I have also tried accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from a third computer (also XP) on the same network, with similar problems... leading me to believe the problem is on the Windows 7 computer.

The W7 desktop has no problem accessing other shares.

I should also add that all three of these computers are on the same workgroup and can ping each other.

Also, as a test, I created a brand-new folder, C:\downloads2\,... Read more

Try disabling UAC, i had my own issue with network files with Win7 and after i disabled UAC everything worked perfectly.

Also, try making a share that isn't in the root of the drive Or put it in the public folder and see if that works correctly.

I'm sitting with a big issue at a customer and ask for your help.
- 3x Windows 2008 R2 file servers configured in DFS
- approx. 500x Windows 7 clients (Laptops)
- 3x network shares, Common1, Common2 and Homefolder.
- "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection" enabled for entire user profile.
- Everything is controlled by GPOs and there are no login scripts.
Due to some faulty settings in the client GPO and the fact that the "Common" shares was set to allow Offline Caching of files and folders, the majority of clients now suffer from sync issues and conflicts.
Most of the conflicted files are located in the users home folder, but some users are also seeing the same issues with files located on the "Common" shares. The users themselfes are not allowed to enable Offline Files as this is disabled by GPOs.
The only folders that should be treated as Offline Files are the ones in the users home folder.
A new set of GPOs have been created that correctly set up "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection". These are linked to a test-OU and the computers and users applied to that OU are not suffering from the problems above.
When we move a client, the cache will be deleted and all non-sync'd work will be lost.
Today we manually look at every users sync center and try to resolve the conflicts before we move them to the new OU. This is extremely time consuming when... Read more

When I try to rename a folder on the D: partition that used to be a Windows XP recovery partition that has some Pokemon commissions in it, I get this message.
"This folder is shared with other people
If you rename this folder, it will no longer be shared."
But the folder is not shared nor has it ever been.
What is going on? Why does Windows 7 think that it is shared?

Answer:“This folder is shared with other people” when renaming not shared folder

Hello there,
This happens because of the way the Access Control List is queried by Windows Explorer to determine if the folder is shared. Because this folder you tried to rename is a child folder of a parent folder and the two folders have a different security entries, Windows will treat as a shared folder. This causes Explorer to give you the warning that you received.
Just double check, this must be a shared folder.
Hope this helps!

I have a 2 computers connected using a Cisco router and ethernet cables. one of them has a printer connected via USB and this printer is sharerd. Both of them running Win 7 Professional 32-bit OS. I can connect to the shared printer from the 2nd machine, but after a restart, the same printer appears offline.
I have to go to My Network Places, click on the 1st PC's icon and then right-click the printer and click Connect. This re-establishes the connection.
Though this method serves my purpose, I want to get to the bottom of this. Why does the printer show offline each time I restart?

Update #1

Printer ic onnected via USB. Tried setting the PCs to high performance in Power Options, just in case the USB was going into sleep mode.

Answer:Shared Printer Offline after restart

Have you tried uninstalling the printer driver then install the new printer driver (downloaded from the Manufacturer's site)?

Another great option - if your router has a USB port you may utilize it for printer sharing.

Hi, each of our 2000+ laptop users use a 110MB of our DFSr for redirected folders (Document, Desktop & Favorites). This was working fine until we discovered their Offline Files cache was not restricted to 110MB so many are now over the 110MB limit
for Offline Files and this is causing various issues, e.g. deleted files are reappearing. So we need to set both group policy settings "Size of auto-cached files" and "Total size of offline files" in "Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\Network\Offline Files" to 110MB and then reduce each user's Offline Files to under 110MB. The latter is the tricky bit. We could deploy an SCCM package to re-initialize the offline files cache and database (Offline-Folders) using "REG ADD
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache" /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f" but any files in a user's Offline Files that hasn't yet been synch'd will be lost and this approach will be unacceptable to the business.

How can we overcome this? Could we somehow backup the Offline Files folder (C:\Windows\CSC) using a script/USMT, without requiring user intervention, before deploying the FormatDatabase reg key update? If so, how please?

I have a Visual Basic 6 app that reads files from a shared network folder and then processes them.  It was installed on two Windows XP computers many years ago.  Now we want to upgrade it to Windows 7.  I have two different computers with
Windows 7.  When I connect the Windows 7 computers to the network and run the app (which has a File Watcher window) and am watching all 4 computers, I noticed that the File Watcher window of the XP boxes show the files about 2 seconds before the Windows
7 boxes see the files.  What would cause this?  Everything else in the app works as it should.
The apps are running as Administrator on the Windows 7 boxes and XP compatiblility mode.  I have tried it both ways.

I have my Public Desktop folder set to share for everyone, so it can be accessed from other pc's on the home network. But when I move a file from my user desktop to the public desktop it suddenly adds the lock icon over it and can't be accessed from another pc, even though the public desktop still can. I have to change the permissions on the file every time, although this never used to be the case. I used to be able to move a file to the public desktop without having to manually "share" it each time.

All settings look correct: Sharing is enabled for the folder and set for full control "everyone", and public folder sharing is turned on.

Again, this just started and was working fine before. Would one of the recent security patches have changed something?

Answer:Files moved to shared public folder "locked"

I'm not sure how this could occur but in order for the Public folders to be shared you need to enable sharing through the Sharing tab of the main Public folder, otherwise anything placed in one of it's subfolders won't be sharable.

If the share is being moved from a folder with a lock then moving that folder to a Public folder won't remove the lock.

The main Public folder is located at the C:\Users\Public and should appear like the picture.

Hey guys
I am working on a little script to add printers and papercut together
On my testing of this I found an issue which is not giving me accurate testing results as the issue is even happening without the script involved at all
For non bound to domain machines, so personal machines that visitors bring in they need to print
So on my testing with my own personal machine and a non bound desktop machine, I add the printer through windows explorer
login with domain crediantials
Prints fine with papercut pop up box and I get my job
When I restart the machine however, the printer is always offline and I cannot print
I get the following errors at different times at testing:
Printer cannot be display
Print Spooler not running ( when it is)
RPC server not available
Other times it tries to print but no papercut box comes up and does not authenticate my print job
Remember this is happening on 3 different machines that I tested it with and without the script involved

Mind you Ive tested these on freshly installed windows machines so maybe I need some windows updates.. but I have tried win 7 8.1 and 10...

Hey everyone.

I use both Linux (Ubuntu 10.04, 2.6.33-AMD64) and Windows 7 professional, and sometimes I get a little boggled at the apparent lack of functionality in W7 in the following situation.

I have a network share in the root of my drive that I've called "DropBox" where my boss and I can both put files to be shared via the network. I have a bunch of files in "Downloads" directory that I'd like to be able to share at various times, but would rather not have my downloads directory directly shared as it violates my sense of order. IE, I would much rather have one shared folder from which you can reach all the other content I need to share on the drive, and if I need to un-share something, simply delete the shortcut, and Voila! instant anti-sharing.

Figure 1. Clean Sharing

In Ubuntu, you can create a symlink within a shared folder that points to a non shared folder which allows network users to access that non-shared folder.

Does this functionality exist in W7?

Answer:Shared Shortcut to non-shared folder.

Okay, so I solved this issue on my own =) TGFG! The answer lies in the MKLink command.

Specifically: mklink /D /J Downloads "C:\Users\Robert\Downloads\"

Works like a charm. All networked machines have access to my non-shared directory through the shared folder, and it looks nice and clean on the viewers end.

Thanks for letting me rubber duck this one.

Whatever virus this is, it seems to effect the amount of memory I can use slowing down my computer and causing me crashes in Team Fortress 2.

It also disabled my sound driver.

It has yet to do anything more than annoy me from what I can tell, and it may yet be a hacker.

It's look always like this in the same folders, other are from other places on the pc.

C:\Program files\common files\microsoft shared\paris hilton porno pics archive xxx.exe
C:\Program files\common files\yahoo!\shared\anna benson sex video.exe

I also tried Panda online active scan.

Need help on what to do.
I'll post the active scan log and hjt as i saw in other posts regarding viruses.

I share files on my home network between my desktop PC and my laptop. I often move files between the two computers by placing folders on the desktops and then working with them or moving them to specific folders. The network for my laptop lists its desktop folder, but for the desktop PC, the topline \Users root folder is listed, not the desktop. Network and sharing work just fine. But how do I list the shared PC desktop folder so that I don?t have to drill down through the \Users file structure to reach the desktop folder?

Answer:List specific shared folder in Network, not root folder

I can't seem to predict when XP Pro SP2 will let me move a folder from SharedDocs\My Videos
to C:\ and when it won't! I don't get it. If I'm Owner don't I own it already?

Sometimes I can just grab the folder that I copied from another machine and placed in My Videos and just
drag it with the Left Mouse Button into another folder on C:\ and it just moves it by changing the directory entries. Then sometimes when I do that, it copies all the files!! Well with video files that's pretty slow!!

Anyone have a clue? Seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

Answer:Move Folder Out Of Shared Folder Same Drive Wants To Copy?

Hello MilesAhead,I'm not absolutely sure, but some of the phrases in your problem description seem to indicate that this might be a variation of the "XP + mouse movement + mouse buttons + keyboard keystrokes" behavior described in the following post. The post deals with the unexpected copying of files when trying to delete them, but I thought the same (or a similar) principle might apply with respect to moving files/folders. I have been using Folder Redirection for the last ~6 months in my organization. It works great with Win2K/WinXP/Vista clients 99% of the time...

I have a few WinXP users (notebooks, these users also connect from home via Microsoft PPTP VPN client) that occasionally have issues. Some mornings when the users arrive and attempt to connect to our fileserver - let's call it \\NAS\ for now - they will only see \\NAS\users\username - And their My Documents folder will be correctly listed here.

\\NAS\ is a Quad Core / single socket server running Windows Server 2003 R2 x86

According to the Sync Manager, everything is "online" so supposedly, this is actually looking on \\NAS\ and not on an offline copy... but no other shares are listed! Normally they would see a directory listing other users' folders as well as a few other shares at \\NAS\ - but when this problem occurs, nothing else is listed except \\NAS\users\username

Their systems were not in sleep or hibernate - normally their laptops were completely shutoff prior to turning them on in the morning.

If they connect via IP address instead of name, they see all the shares - i.e., \\\ will display all the shares on \\NAS\ - all the shares work correctly when connecting via IP address.

From the command prompt, I can run "net use" and see the shares that are in use - usually \\NAS\ is listed. If I run net use \\nas\users\username /delete and then again attempt to connect t... Read more

Answer:Folder Redirection / DNS / Offline Folder issue

Have you tried manually synching the off-line files withouth logging out or rebooting? Sometimes that works for me. You also might try a good CCleaning of those users' machines and deleting the local off-line cache, could be some corrupted junk causing the issues. I have this problem from time to time on my work XP Pro laptop, maybe once every other month. I also have a desktop at the office that I run Vista Business on. Both machines are running with me logged in when I am in the office. I always assumed the issue was something with synching between XP Pro and Vista Business at the same time so I never really bothered to see what the underlying cause was. Usually forcing a synch, even if it says synched already, or logging out and back in will fix it for me.

Its the typical story. My Windows XP SP2 laptop has an excellent wireless connection, but cannot connect to the internet in anyway; browsers give me a 'cannot connect to server message', and when I test out any of the 'update' functions on applications, it's a no-go either.

I noticed the problem started when I set up a dial-up connection about a month ago. I no longer use dial-up, of course, and only used it for about a week at a cabin, but now my Windows simply won't connect to the internet. (I get a full strength wireless signal, however)

The thing is, my computer connects perfectly on its Mac OS side, so its not a hardware problem. I'm pretty sure somewhere along the line a proxy or DNS or whatever configuration was tweaked out of line.

Also, sometimes when starting Firefox, my computer asks which connection I want to use; and then gives me a choice of only dial-up connections. Its as if my computer now thinks I'm using dial-up and refuses to let me use wireless as the mode of connection.

Also, I still can't connect in Safe Mode With Networking.

Thanks a bunch,

OopS! Did I say shared, well that is what I am trying to accomplish, share a printer connected to another pc. The problem is I cannot access the pc where the printer is connected. The pc is on the network and the printer functions from the pc(USB port). I don't know if this has any bearing on the situation but the pc the printer is connected to is a 64 bit Windows OS and the others are 32 bit Windows OS. When I try to access the pc it ask for a password and I have know idea what it could be; I have removed all passwords from the user accounts and it still responds the same. :confused

Answer:Shared printer connected to pc

Do this on the computer that has the printer attached to it:
Open Control Panel then Printers and Other Hardware, and lastly click Printers and Faxes.
In the Printers and Faxes folder, click the printer's icon and, in the tasks pane, click Share This Printer.
Open the printer's Properties dialog box, and click on the Sharing tab.
Click Share Name, and then clicked OK.

Do this on all the other computers:
Open Control Panel, and click Printers and Other Hardware then click Add a Printer.
Instead of adding a local printer, though, click Printer Connection and then browse the network for the printer.

Here's also a troubleshooting page you can read over and make sure you have everything covered.

I have teamviewer on two computers. It was working fine for a week or two but then all of a sudden after a few days I couldn't connect to PC2, but PC1 still worked fine. A few days later, I couldn't connect to PC1 or PC2.

I have restarted the computers and the modem and router. Both PCs have internet access and can access the web and each other but for some reason when I sign into teamviewer, it says they are both offline.

What is really crazy is if I open teamviewer on either PC, it says "ready to connect (secure connection)" but when I open the list of my computers on the right they both show as offline...?

Anyone else run into this? And before 100 people suggest this, NO IT IS NOT MY ROUTER, MODEM, FIREWALL, OR A/V.

We have a DLink DSL-2730B wireless ethernet router into which is plugged, amongst other devices, a Konica Minolta C252 print hub device.

The other computers are desktops, connected via CAT5 cables to the router. I use the wireless connection for my laptop as there are no more ports available on the router and, in any case, my desk is on the opposite side of the room. I am running Windows 7 SP1.

The C252 has a fixed IP address.

The problem I have is that every time I disconnect the laptop from the network, when I come to reconnect the printer shows as offline and I need to uninstall and reinstall it to get the two devices to talk to one another again.

Occasionally (though not every time) when I reinstall the printer the laptop tells me the name is still in use. That may be because I don't leave enough time for the uninstall to propagate because I want to reinstall the thing and get on with my work.

Is there any way I can reconnect to the printer across the wireless network without having to go through this rigmarole every day?

Answer:Ethernet-connected printer keeps showing as offline

Welcome to Seven Forums,

You might want to install the latest printer driver and software from the manufacturer's site to your laptop.

Also, update your laptop's Wi-Fi adapter's driver to the latest.

Hi, I'm trying to open My Pictures on my wife's laptop but I get this error message Your folder can't be shared. This also happens to other folders on the laptop. I've tried to change Security Settings but it usually leads me to an endless layer of pop ups which finally ends with me being unable to change the setting. This is my wife's private home laptop and you can just imagine how important it is to be able to view pictures and videos of our grandchildren. I just need to relax the high security settings and make this work. Any help at all would be so appreciated.

Hi guys,
I have a shared folder which contains many folders for many users on
my network and to make users folders recognisable we chose to fix a
folder picture of every folder with the picture of the folder owner.
The problem is that those folders never have a constant folder picture
on all of my network computers as the picture always changes for some
reason, I've tried to set permissions on thumb.db file and also tried
fiddling with desktop.ini file but no use. Any ideas would be much
appreciated. Thanks.

I believe vista did this as well. So Windows 7 doesnt' work any differently from Vista in this regards.

I am running into an issue with users renaming files on a shared drive. When the users try to rename, they get the error "A file name can't contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? < > |". However, neither the new or old filename contains
any of these characters, or any other invalid characters as far as I can determine, just alphanumeric characters and spaces. When they try to rename it again, it works without an issue.
I have found reports of this error being generated if the file path is too long, but all users are accessing this from a shared drive, and even if the share name is taken into account the file path and name are easily under 100 characters.
I have 3 users on 3 different systems reporting this issue, so I don't think it is user error.
The workstations are running Windows 7 Pro, SP1. The server is Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise, Service Pack 2.
The users are located at a remote site, and accessing the share over a site to site VPN. There are XP workstations at the site as well, that do not appear to be having the issue.
Any help, suggestions, or guidance is greatly appreciated!

We are a small company.  We are running six windows 8 computers.  Our secretary works from home, the rest of us are in the same office.

The Admin Computer stores all of our work files within a folder called 'casework' (about 400GB).   The 'casework' folder is shared on the office network.  This 'casework' folder is also synced by Google Drive.

When our secretary works on her home computer and makes a new file, e.g. letterV2, the new file downloads to our 'casework' folder to the Admin Computer here at the office.  However, the new file cannot been seen on our other computers over the office

The newly created files are not shared to 'everyone' unless I un-share 'casework' from the network and then share 'casework' again.

The problem seems to be that the new files added by Google Drive are not inheriting the permissions of the 'casework' folder.

There are no options to change in Google Drive.  Is this a Windows8 problem? Will Windows10 have a fix for this? Are there any work arounds? Does our secretary need to work at the office?

Yours Hopefully

Answer:New files downloaded from cloud storage into shared folders don't inherit shared permissions for "Everyone"

may I know how that work case folder sync with google drive?

I suggest you contact Google drive first, we have limitation information regarding this product.

You can proof that there is no issue for sharing folder within your office network
I think that's not how online share drive work, unless your secretary can join your office network trough internet
this is the example, you can ask your secretary to send file trough share drive and assign 1 admin to sync and send it to your case work folder
But maybe you will be interested with Office 365

Hi all
Anybody managed to solve the shared printer problem when a USB printer is attached to W8.

I can't find any place to enable sharing the printer and set its shared name. The printer installs and works just fine on the W8 system but W7 / XP machines can't access it.

I got round the problem by attaching the printer to a Virtual W2K3 server running on vmware on W8 -- then sharing works fine to other W7 / XP machines.

Still no way to share with W8 .

I'm sure I'm not the only person who wants to share a printer on W8 with other computers --- anybody got this working.

Answer:Shared printers - Printer connected to W8 machine

Hi Jimbo, I haven't actually tried this but if you open up Control Panel, go to Hardware and Sound, Devices and Printers, Right click on your Printer and select create shortcut.

This should make a shortcut on your Desktop, when you right click on the shortcut you get the share options

I hope this helps

I've recently added a Qnap 4 bay NAS to my system. When I first got it running I had two drives installed in a RAID1 configuration. I migrated all my media files to this, created Mapped shared drives for my Music and Video folders, and successfully proceeded to add this Video folder to WMP12 using the Organize -> Manage Libraries -> Videos option and Adding the folder. It showed up and WMP12 begain reading all the videos from that location.

A few days ago I got my other two drives, added these to the NAS, and migrated the whole thing to a RAID10 configuration. After that was done I figued "I should probably remove the old entry in WMP12 for my Video folder and re-add it". I deleted the one that was there, tried to add the shared folder again (using the same method) and now it won't add the folder. I got the "Windows added the location to your library, but couldn't share the location" error. The details for this error are "because it's (the shared folder which is mapped to a drive letter) on another computer". I can see these mapped folders from Windows File Manager and can access them from there. How did I get this to work when it was RAID1, but not now?

Son of a gun, now I'm really confused. It seems all I had to do was wait. I had tried it again as I was typing this (to make sure I was being accurate), and even though I got the error I just described above it eventually began adding the files from that shared folder. Answer:WMP12 - my Shared drive was connected, now it's not. What happened?

New problem. While it appears WMP12 now has this shared folder linked in and available, and my DLNA compliant plasma identified and Allowed for streaming content in Win7's Networking features, my MACHINE:user is not selectable from my plasma as an available server. Once again, this worked perfectly before I installed the NAS. The funny thing is the Twonky server that is in the NAS is visible and available from my plasma. So is my music server software, which is installed on my Win7 system. AAMOF, every DLNA server on my PC is selectable from my monitor except the one used by Win7 for its own DLNA server. I have an OKI laser printer that's USB connected to a Win7 Ultimate desktop computer. This is shared with a Windows XP desktop and two other Win7 laptops (Lenovo). The Lenovos are dual boot (7 + XP) but used primarily on 7. I'm not really sure whether this is the best section to post this issue, since it could be something other than a network and sharing issue. I've done this sort of thing several times over and never encountered the problem described below.

The XP computer can see the shared printer and print to it with no problem.

One of the two Lenovos (Win 7 Pro 64-bit) can access the printer with no problems. When I used Devices and Printers - add new printer it found it, went to fetch a driver from Windows Update and it worked within minutes.

The second (wife's) Lenovo is proving very problematic. Using the XP OS I was able to install and run the shared printer after installing the OKI driver and it works perfectly. However it's not playing ball at all trying to install and run it from Windows 7 (Home Premium 32-bit) that I am trying to persuade my wife to use.

Starting from "Install new printer" it found it immediately and I proceeded to set it up. The first surprise is that it spent some time in Windows Update but ended up saying it couldn't find a driver. (Odd, since the other Lenovo found one in seconds and installed it).

So I downloaded the driver from OKI, pointed it to the INF file and within seconds its said it had been correctly installed. ... Read more

Answer:Shared printer is recognized and connected, but not printing

Have you tried a system restore to a point before the printer install? I have a feeling this is a bad driver however I may not be correct.

Also does the driver from OKI support Windows 7? Just because it supports XP doesn't mean it will support 7.

Hi - I'm finally giving up and asking for help. My networking knowledge consists of some networking for end users and basic business networks.

Computer: HP desktop, (LAN) Intel 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection, (WiFi) Qualcomm Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dualband Wireless Network Module.

Router: TP-Link WR841N v9, Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r30880 std (11/14/16).

Printer: Canon MF4570dn connected to router by LAN

Problem description: The printer only sees the desktop (and will only work/interface) if the desktop's WiFi is enable/connected. If the WiFi is disabled and I am only using a wired LAN connection (to the router from the desktop), then the printer does not see the desktop. It doesn't matter if the printer is set to use "Auto IP" or if I use a static IP address - the symptoms are the same. It appears to be something related to the router as the previous routers (Netgear AC1700 and Airlink 101) did not have any problems. I have not had to change the network settings on the printer since for years.

I have been researching for a couple of months, but my phrasing of the searches always come up with "network printers" and the printer is not set up and has never been set up as a network printer.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. If more information is needed I will provide it.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I have a user who is using a domain joined Windows 7 Pro PC. She has several printers mapped via a domain print server.
She uses a VPN to connect to another site with a different Windows domain. She logs into the VPN with a user account setup for her on the other domain. She then logs into a RDS server using those same credentials.
The problem is that she is unable to print to any of her local printers from the RD server. The local printers show as being redirected on the RD server.
The redirected printers all look like they're online and she receives no error when printing but nothing comes out of the printer. However, when you view the printers on her PC during an RDS session, they are all showing offline. As soon as you disconnect
from the RD server and the VPN the local printers come back online and anything she tried to print to a redirected local printer while on the server now prints out.
I've checked and the print spooler service on her PC never stops so that's not the cause.
I've checked with another user as user #1's location who sits 10 feet away from her and is mapped to the same local printers. She connects to the other domain via VPN using her own credentials on the other domain and logs into that same RDS server. She then
prints a document to the same redirected printer that user #1 is trying to print to, but in this person's case the document prints out and the local printers on her PC never show as being offline while connected to the VPN and RD... Read more

I have a strange problem, I can`t seem to fix.
I have a shared folder with many sub folders.
If I access this from another computer, it just shows some of
the folders (ex: of 120 it shows 15).
For another folder on the same server, with the same setup, it`s
not at problem.

I have checked the sharing permissions, and all of them are the same
on both shared folders.

All run Win 7 Ultimate.
Router: TP-Link TL-WR941ND, with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (11/21/10) std - build 15778
Server connected with cable, laptop via WiFi. (But tried with cable on both,
no difference)
All use Windows Firewall and Security Essentials.

And this are the same problem on all computers that's trying to open that folder.

This all happened after a reinstall of Windows.

I'm facing a dilemma here. Windows 7 is awesome with automatic driver detection for new hardware, however, now I'm facing a problem.

PC1 is running Windows 7 and is connected to local area network.
PC2 is running Windows XP and is sharing my office printer (connected to LPT1)

Printer = LaserJet 4000 pcl5, shared.

Printer is installed on XP using drivers from HP website.
A few months ago Microsoft released a driver for Windows 7 for the HP LJ4000, so when you connect this printer to your computer it can automatically install the driver from the Microsoft Windows 7 online driver database.

This is also what HP says and because of this it's not making the driver available for download.

This makes me sad, because when I want to connect to the printer shared on my other machine running XP, using windows 7, it tells me the drivers aren't found on the network, which is logical because it's offering XP drivers.
How do I proceed to get the drivers for Windows 7 so I can print over my local area network (from PC1 to PC2)?

Kind regards and thanks for your time! =]
P.S. It tells me the drivers aren't found on the network and lets me select a location to install them from, but since I can't download them from the HP site and I don't know where to download the ones microsoft is offering I can't use that option.

Answer:Problem installing printer driver 4printer connected&shared on othr pc

You can try running the vista installation in compatibility mode.
I think it will work as it's a very basic driver type anyway.
