HP envy left hinge

Question: HP envy left hinge

I've read in the forum that someone got their laptop repaired at NO COST?? Even after lapse of warranty? Wow, what did you do to convince HP to do this? I have sent several requests and complaints and a HP rep phoned to ask about it then told me to pay $300.00 for the repair. I do believe a substandard quality back cover which undoubtedly costs very cheaply to make is a good trade of for keeping customers. But it seems HP is more concerned about making money once and not considering about after sales and follow up sales. They certainly lost me and I was considering buying the Spectre but not anymore. BTW I checked an online supplier for the back cover and it sells for $35.00 from China but I prefer to do the repairs myself.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Very frustrated with this...I opened the laptop gently as I would always do  and the hinge on the left side of the laptop just snapped and popped out of the plastic monitor frame.  The design of the hinges are just terrible and i can now see how they work because the case has been damaged just from opening and closing the laptop.  I can now see inside the whole left side of the case.  To top it off I have already invested considerable time into upgrading the OS to Windows 10 and customizing and installing software on this laptop. I cannot close my laptop entirely since the screen closes on an incorrect angle. Since I am out of warranty, is there any way to fix this problem? After reading several posts, it seems to be a common problem with the envy models.

The right hinge broke on my ENVY m6. Now the left one is about to go. The waranty is up and I have noticed that this is a common problem with this product. I should hope that there has been a recall on this. HP should at least repair the issue free of charge (waranty or no waranty). I take great care of my things and my computer is no exception. Please give me advice on this one. I am extremely disappointed at this point.

The left hinge of the laptop is causing the bottom case to pop off. Whenever I open the notebook, the black bottom portion of the laptop separates from the top grey portion, exposing the inside of the laptop. When I close the laptop, the bottom case snaps back into place.I have had this laptop for over three years, with no other issue. Is there anything HP can do to resolve this hardware problem? Thanks

I am having an issure with the corner of the base of the laptop seperating near the bottom left of the screen (near the hinge). When the laptop is opened, the piece pop apart. When I try to snap them back together, they pop back apart as soon as I let go. I have been looking on the forum and it seems that this was a common problem. I am concerned because I do not want it to break as it was not a cheap laptop. Can anybody help with this issue?

The left hinge of my Envy 15 has broken for no obvious reason.  It started about a week ago and is getting worse. The case near the hinge is now opening up and today a screw fell out.  It's no longer under warranty, but it looks like this is a common problem.  Can I get this fixed through HP?

I've seen tons of post regarding the left hinge issue on the envy 17.  I also have this problem, have replaced two fans due to the plastic part the hings screws into break ing and getting into the fan.   Also I'm beyond the waranty period.  Havs HP created a repair kit or replacement case with better design to fix my laptop issue?   Laptop is only 2 years old.  I hope HP will stand behind their product and help customers with this issue

I have the  same problem described above. Envy 17 (silver) i5 - the corner of the case is spreading apart and now it is also happening on the right side. I have had to use gorilla tape to try to hold the case together.  It appears that this is a design flaw for this laptop. The laptop works, but over time, I'm afraid that it will get so bad that it will not run.  Is there a replacement case available?  Thank you.

I only had my laptop for a year and a half when the problem started. The left hinge is broken and now, I don't close my laptop anymore in fear of not be able to turn the power on anymore. The left part of the laptop is elevated (because of the parts from the broken hinge) and and I feel that everytime I move the screen, it might fall apart. Everytime I adjust the screen I hear a sound that feels like it's going to break anytime soon. The power button seems to get affected too, and I fear that in a few days I might not be able to turn it on. This has been ongoing problem for years with hp laptops and why is it that hp is not doing anything about the issue?

After two years of use the left Hinge on my HP Envy broke.  Where does one get it fixed and is it fixable?  It seems to interfer with the usage if one moves the lid back and forth.  Is it connected to hardware that will evenutally shut my computer down?  I would rather be able to take it a part and put a replacement hinge instead of sending it away?

My HP Envy 17 SE has shown the well-known left hinge error in its hinge area, something consistent with recent complaints in a design flaw. I purchased it in 2014 for my university usage and it's right at that critical point in my Senior year where I cannot go without this dependable laptop. Took it to get looked at and evaluated at a local shop and they said that the needed part to stop the splitting is no longer available. It looks like its an external thing and the left hinge pops. It is horrible to have such a bad issue when the brand is generally dependable but I am sad to say that this happened fairly recently after my warranty expiration. Left hinge pops and it seems like my laptop is now nothing but a glorified desktop. Are there any solutions to this? This brand has been dependable for my family and I happened to get the ENVY's "flawed" design as my university pick.

Just checking if there has been a fix for this since I see this has been a problem for many people. I as well noticed the hinge and casing pulling apart but never thought it was broken. Until the fan stop working and computer wanted to shut down. Quite frequently I heard the fan making screetching noises which probably had the plastic from the hinge and casing floating around it. My question is this an easy fix or just buy a new laptop. Paid alot of money for this and works great other than this problem. Thanks

After the laptop is closed, i can push the parts back together, but upon opening it gets torn open again. What can I do, is there a replacment casing I can buy or something? Hi, I purchased my Envy M6 about three years ago. It is obviously out of warranty. Today, the left hinge mechanism failed.I am unable to close the lid without causing further damage, as case is splitting aroud the hinge. After briefly looking for solutions to this problem I was astounded by the sheer number of reports of the exact same malfunction occuring on this device. With countless reports of the problem, I find it incomprehensable that there has been no recall to resolve the malfunctioning parts.  Rather than a recall, the information I can find through these forums suggests that HP is charging customers for the privilage of repairing their malfunctioning product.I'm hoping that HP is able to address this issue!

I purchased a HP Envy TS 15 notebook in December 2014 and so far it works fine but no longer under warranty.  However, the left hinge of the laptop is broken which leaves the top left corner of the plastic cover with a slanted appearance against the screen.  Also I noticed from previous posts that there is a flaw with the hinges with some of the HP Envy laptops.  Now, what can be done to fix the broken hinge?  Thanks for your assistance.

My left hinge is broken I am guessing by reading other complaints? I have had this laptop for a little over a year and have never mishandled it in and kind of way. Now it will not turn on because it is saying problems with the fan because everytime I open it the bottom pops off. I tried to email HP but they would not reply because my warranty was up August 15th. I was wondering how much it would cost for HP to fix it? Or the Geek Squad with Best Buy? I need it fixed as soon as possible! It is my school laptop.

Wow , I have had the same problem , left hinge screw and besel came off and then got stuck between the screen and keyboard . Went to close the lap top and the screw was stuck in the hinge and next thing you know I have a cracked screen. Bought this laptop in December still under warranty , but HP says that this is not a know issue so they will not cover physical damage. Then I find this message board and wow , here we are all with a left hinge screw issue. Only problem this caused a broken screen. My case has been escalated still waiting for a call or email .  Any one have any advise? Geek Squad wants over 1000.00 to fix screen , that is more than I paid for the laptop new. Really disapointed in HP service , have a second HP Envy 17 in shop under warranty repair for a fan malfunction , they are fixing that one. This really may be my last HP. I own about 14 machines between my office and home. May be time to look for something else.

This is in response to the 2014 post, "HP Envy 17" Left Hinge and Casing," and I'm posting here b/c I'm not able to reply in that thread (maybe HP got tired of hearing about it?). I am having the exact same issue but with my HP Envy 15.6". I purchased it 13 months and 3 days ago. Up until this point, I've loved it. It's been an excellent machine. That is until this morning. The left hinge completely broke and the plastic piece detached. When I close the laptop I can place it back on, but when I open it up it pops off again and makes popping noises. I want to note that I have taken good care of it, gentle care (in fact I haven't opened and closed it very much, no reason the hinges would be worn after only a year), and basic, routine usage. I don't know what to do. I'm concerned that this will only get worse over time and am worried of the potential internal damage this could cause. I've read all of the threads, the many, countless customers who have the same issue. It really calls into question HP's brand and the quality of their products. I assume my warranty is expired. And it's very suspicious that this happened just at the year mark, about a month after my warranty expired. This seems to have been a known problem since 2014 (almost 3 years!) with no solutions for customers. The only option I've seen is a repair at around $150-300, which I think is outlandish to pay and insulting to customers. This is not average "wear and tear." This is clearly a design flaw... Hello, I have a problem with the left hinge on my HP Envy 17 Quad Edition Laptop. At some point the casing around the hinge started breaking up causing litle bits of plastic to rattle around inside the laptop. This caused the fan to stop working resulting in 90B errors on startup. The lid is now stuck in the open position and cannot be closed without further damanging the laptop.  This laptop is over 3 years old and out of warranty, but otherwise in great condition.  I would simply like to get the casing repaired. Can HP help me with this?

Bought my wife a new HP Envy, inherited her old Envy 17 inch and realized that when you open the screen the bottom panel separates some in the left corner by left hinge. I guess this is a ongoing problem for these models. Wondering if HP is doing anything about this issue through means of out of warranty assistance? For me the biggest concern is that this will get worse and affect the fan or worse the hinge will break completely.

The left Hinge on my HP Envy has become loose; this poses a problem when opening/closing the lid as it grinds against the casing.  I've had a lot of difficulty navigating HP's Customer support website.  I travel a lot with this laptop and despite treating it with great care the hinge has come loose/broken (from what I understand has become a common problem).  I am out of the warranty and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a few repair options.  I like HP, I find this whole issue disheartening.   Thank you for any help you can give.

Hi, I've had my HP Envy for just over two years and I'm the only user of the laptop.  About a year ago the left hinge broke through just opening the case - never dropped, not too much force but clearly a defective part.  As the laptop was needed for daily use, I thought I would tolerate the issue through necessity.  However, more recently the gap between the case has become bigger and I'm more concerned about the laptop overheating or developing an even more terminal issue if it isn't fixed. I was shocked to find out how much of widespread this problem is and that I'm not alone in this issue.  My warranty has expired but HP has developed and sold a defective product that needs to be corrected.  I like this laptop and don't want to have a useless 900 laptop.   I look forward to a reponse to resolving this issue. Thanks,

I purchased my HP Envy TS 17 Notebook from Costco and now the left hinge is broken. I have used it exclusively for school and have taken very good care of it; however, now, I am unable to close it. The left hinge hangs and the case is popping apart. So far, I had been very happy with the laptop, but this definitely a problem. I paid nearly $ 1,000 for this computer. At the time of purchase, I was completely unaware of the previous hinge problems in HP laptops.  Please help!!

Hello, I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me. Recently the left hinge on my laptop has dropped out of position/broken and has pushed the back casing of the laptop out, disrupting one of the fans.It has not been dropped this is through everyday use. I noticed it had become creeky when opening the lid of the laptop, So i stopped using it as I had finished university for summer and my ipad met my everyday use. A month later I had to get a file off my laptop so I opened the lid and the hinge popped out of position/broke this is when it occurred . It no longer opens and closes correctly. I rang hp explaining the situation and said that the laptop is currently under warranty and Only 11 months old. They said that this type of thing wasn't covered under warranty as it was classified as "everyday wear and tear" and that I would have to pay 150 to fix it. Would anyone be able to advise me on how to get it fixed under warranty. As I don't want to pay another 150 pound on a 750 pound laptop because hp used non suitable hinges, which seems to be a common issue. Thanks Matt

My Envy 17 has the broken left hinge. I would like to find a replacement pair to swap them out. Also, because this appears to be a long time issue with the HP notebooks, what is HP doing about this?

The left hinge on my laptop appears to have become unattached or broken.   Thankfully, this has not affected the performance of the computer.  I called HP to find out the cost to repair this and was quoted $412.76!  I can't help but notice that were numerous posts concerning this same problem.   Has there been a recall that I somehow overlooked?  We have purchased several HP laptops and printers and have had no major problems until now.  I am hoping to have this fixed at much less than $412.76!

The left hinge is broken on my HP Envy 17" Touchsmart notebook.  The bottom plastic casing is also coming away. It is hard to open and close the laptop without causing more problems and I'm worried about the screen cracking.  My local tech service has been trying to source replacement parts, but has found none available. They have identified that this is a common problem with this model, and I see there are hundreds of postings with the same problem.  Please could you help?

Immediately after my 1 year warranty ended my left hinge broke and my system began to overheat.  In regards to the hinge the use has been very light, generally it sits on a desk and stays open, clearly the design is very poor.  The over heating seems to have been building, but its not dust or obstruction, I suspect its the thermal paste, there have been quite a few posts on other sites about this.    Has HP recognized the hinge and overheathing as a design flaw or are they just letting their customers spend money to fix it?  What are my options.

As this is an additional hinge problem among my household of hp laptops, it becomes most difficult to defend hp's reputation among my circle of relatives and friends. This time it is my spouses laptop.  I was close by when I heard a loud screach/crack/pop as the lid was raised.  Then the fan apparently engaged a piece of loose plastic and began to tap away struggling to recover.  I grabbed it and tilted enough to seemingly shift it so the particle disengaged but surely this is only temporary.   I've little appreciation for the panic it instilled for an issue that should not exist.  Now wondering if I should reach for greater peace of mind and replace all with new and different.   Any suggestions?

I can almost press the case back into place, but the casing starts to separate and pop apart again every time I open or close the laptop--even when I open it very slowly and try to keep it in place. Please advise on how to fix this issue! Hello HP,

I am deeply concerned - I bought a 17" HP envy but less than a year since
, the laptop is coming apart at the bottom near the Hinge for the screen to the left. I am afraid to open it because it makes a "pop" sound every time I open the screen.

God knows I have been extra careful with this laptop. Yopu will not find a scratch on it from bangs or things like that but am deeply scared of this 1200$ piece falling apart not even a year into my using it.

Can someone please advise where to repair this from?? I am based in Uganda but will be travelling to San Francisco and Los Angeles soon.

Please advise, am beginning to lose faith in the machine, and brand..

Answer:17" HP Envy Coming apart at the left near screen hinge

Wow, my 15" HP Envy looks almost exactly the same and the hinge is no longer fixed.  I assumed the problem was because I found a screw under the laptop yesterday but when I tried to screw it back in it went through the housing and inside the computer.  Apparently the screw then caused a problem with the fan and I need a fix as well.  I spent several hours this morning being passed back and forth between the US and Slovak companies because I'm a US customer currently located in Slovakia and according the the support desk I need to put my laptop in a box and mail it to someone in the US if I want it fixed because somehow, and god knows how this is cost effective, the fan for a computer that's sold in the US is not available in Europe.  I'm sorry I don't have a better answer to your question, but my experience suggests you may not get service in the US unless you bought your laptop there and if someone from Support tells you they will service your computer you should check with multiple people.  The first Support person I talked to assured me the Slovak's would fix my fan when he told me to contact them, only to find out after being transferred 4 different times that in fact they won't.   I wish you good luck getting your laptop fixed and I'll let you know if I find any decent solutions but so far all I've been able to figure out is that its likely better to spend my har... My HP Envy also, has the left hinge coming apart.  Each time I open and close my screen, the hinge and notebook base separate.  I would like to have this fixed.  This started about 10 months after I purchased this notebook.  I thought this was just an isolated case, but sounds like a quality defect.  I was just going to go with another brand of notebook in the future due to this issue, but if HP can resolve will continue to remain a customer.

Bought my expensive laptop in 2014 and just over a year the left hinge started breaking. Its a sparingly used laptop and now seems to pull away at the bottom panel if I try to open or close the display . The left hinge is prying the bottom panel.I am worried the laptop will break if I try using it anymore. Never been dropped and was taken good care of.Did not expect HP to give way so easily when other laptops much cheaper dont have this basic hinge issue. At this point I am terribly disappointed with HP but need to get it fixed. Please help.

My Envy 17's  left hinge has come adrift and is causing the case to separate. There are no loose plastic pieces in the case or fan issues yet.We are leaving the top open; it is no longer a portable laptop. Through searching I have learned this is a common and long time issue starting with prior laptops models. This premuim and expensive latop is just over 2 years old and has been kindly treated; never dropped.I have been a long time HP customer. Today I spent over 30 minutes & 2 phone calls with HP Techical and Customer service ultimately being 'dropped' both times during transfers. I'm hoping this forum's moderators will do better. Yes, the laptop is no longer under warranty but this is a long term well known design weakness.I expect to hear from HP with a  no-cost to me repair solution.Per HP's motto they are "Here to keep you happy; And your PC, too" I will provide updates to this issue.

Left hinge pushes case open. When this first started I would hear a bizarre noise from the cooling fan when I would try to snap the case back together. The problem was bad enough that I stopped opening and closing my notebook computer to prevent further damage. Now the cooling fan appears to have failed altogether. I am out of warranty, but this seems to be a design or material problem as I have seen a number of similar posts on support forums. Please help. I'd love to use my computer as intended.

I bought HP over Acer, Lenovo and Asus because i believed that the one thing that HP offers each time, is exquisite build quality. However, today I was met with a nasty surprise. The left hinge (one near the power button) has seemingly come undone, as if on its own.  Surprised as I was, I contacted technical support. Surprise Surprise, my warranty information is wrong. Ive lost out on half an years warranty services.  FLASH BACK: DUBAI - Notebook bought on the 3rd of Feb, 13 - High hopes.SKIP TO PRESENT: INDIA - Broken hinge and warranty lost. So I took a deep breath, and opened up the trusty HPSA again, informing the specialist about my "mistaken date of purchase" (note, I am in India at the time). I am informed by the technician that i have to "contact the HP tech assistance in UAE to rectify the issue." STRIKE ONE. So, everyone knows how "good" the waranty services in India are. I remember having an old all in one HP printer. The printer malfunctioned, so we took it to the closest "Authorised" HP service centre. The first day we went, we werent given any "service". The next day we went, they claimed NOTHING under the warranty covers it. They could be right, but oh well, we paid for rectification. So now I'm feeling like its going to be a repeat of the last time. And its funny, since I have found A LOT of people with the same problem. I dont want to rubbish the customer support, BECAUSE I HAVE S... Read more

I've got a HP Envy 17 J171sa touchsmart laptop. It is just 2 months out of the the 2 year warranty and now the left hinge is making a cracking noise when opening and pushes the bottom of the casing open. This laptop has already had to go back under warranty twice, once when it was 2 months old for a new motherboard and then 5 months ago a white spot appeared on the bottom left side of the screen and had to have a replacement screen, now this. I expected better quality from HP especially when it was nearly 1,000 to purchase the laptop. I've looked after this laptop and been very careful with it, only opened and closed once a day and would not expect this to happen. Very disappointed.

When I open up the notebook now, the left side rear of the bottom case (below the left hinge) comes apart as the screen is lifted up to a viewing position. I have to press the left side rear of the bottom of the case together with the top side of the case to get the left side rear of the case closed. When I lower the screen, the left side rear of the case comes apart and stays apart until the screen is shut. I am able to close the left side rear of the case by pressing the top and bottom of the left side rear of the case together. The right side hinge and the right side rear of the case do not have this issue. This problem has started today. I have smartphone pics I can send if needed. The notebook and screen is operational. Just not sure what is going on with left hinge to force case apart on the left rear side of the bottom panel.

My laptop is out of warranty, but the left hinge is broken.  Is there any chance I can get HP to fix this?  It's frustrating. Thanks!!

Had this laptop for 1 year and 5 months, the other day my left hinge just started poping out when I open and close it. It looks and sounds bad, though I can pop it back in, I have a bad feeling it's going to get worse and the other side may start. Of course my warranty just expired 5 months ago, and I've heard other reports of this so I hope I can get this fixed for free since it seems to be a HP design flaw. I use my laptop as a desktop really so I use the HDMI and only used the actual screena  few times, I lift is just enough to hit the power button, but this still happened. I'm not sure how to go about this since HP keeps trying to charge people for this fix. Thanks!

Hello HP, I bought the HP Envy less than a year ago and now the laptop is comming apart at the top left corner. It makes poping noises when I open and close the screen. This is the laptop I bought for work (Software Developer), so I can not afford to be without a reliable machine. I am from the Eastern Cape in South Africa, and I am starting too loose faith in all things HP. What can I do? Armand van der Walt

I like many others have the whole case cracking issue on my Envy - yes it is out of warranty but I special ordered and spent a bundle so that I could get 5 years out of it not 2.  I tried to extend the warranty but that was a complete CLUSTER and never happened - I have lost my job and cannot afford a new computer and use it for my part time job.  This is a home computer and moves from my home office to my living room - rarely ever leaves the house and is in pristene condition.  Trouble with the answers in this forum is that they are all PM's, except for the ones who have described how to take the machine apart which I can't really risk doing on my own.  Like Dell, HP quality has gone down the toilet!!

Broken Left Hinge is there a recall for this?

I have HP Envy 17 laptop and noticed that the left hinge got loose and something is rattling inside a screw or a piece of plastic. I worry that is can get stuck in the fan and cause hardware issues. I've read a number of posts on this forum, indicating that this is a rather common issue with these laptops, which is likely due to the flaw in the design. I wonder if HP can do something to help. Thanks.

I have previously replied a post under MarkJ60. I open up a new post to make it visible to all the consumers of HP's products. I have experienced the worst customer service ever from HP. Let me restate my problem here. I own a Envy 6-1010us, bought it back in 2012 October. A couple days ago, when my laptop was turning 1 year and 10 months old, the left hinge snapped off from my screen when I tried to adjust my screen with closing movement, while it was sitting on my desk. No dropping, bumping or even a scratch on my laptop. A well-cared HP hardware broke apart in less than 2 years, with a regular day-to-day usage. What a horrible experience. Even though everything is still functioning, a broken hinge with a cracked screen plastic, now I can't close my lid, can't bring my laptop anywhere other than sitting at home. Of course, I won't complain if it's my fault on misusing it or on a cheap product. But, we are talking about a couple hundred dollars laptop, an American branded HP product. If you do some searchs online. You can see all the complaints on the broken hinge of Envy series laptops, especially the left hinge. Amazon, pcoworld, and even this HP "official" support forum have tons of complaints on the same thing. Still HP doesn't admit it is a design flaw (as expected), and decided not to stand behind its products. Instead, making money out of the repairs, where the hinge might break again in near future. If you search for other... Read more

My wife's Envy m7-n109dx touchscreen laptop has a broken hinge on the left side.  Just happened on 9/21/16.  Product # is M1W11UA#ABA.  I have the same model but no issues yet.  She takes great care of it because of the cost. Never been dropped or mishandled.    She went to open the cover and heard an unusual creak and when she closed it she heard a snap.  We bought ours on 2/8/16 so still under warranty.  Any one else have the same issue?  Online research shows that other models of Envy laptops having the same issue.

My HP has had a hinge failure.  I purchased it less than a year ago and it has been giving my problems for a few months now. When you open or close the lid, the bottom casing literally splits apart. There is some broken plastic piece inside. I would really hope there is a resolution for this? Thanks,  Laceb

Help my left hinge is broken like so many others and I'm out of warranty! I just spent 2 hours on the phone with HP only to discover I will be charged $220!! It's clearly a design error since it's happened to literally hundreds of others with this computer! There needs to be a recall it's not fair to have to pay for something that I've never dropped, etc. I've also read where some have gotten theirs repaired free of charge without being covered under warranty

Good afternoon, I have owned my HP Envy TS 15 Notebook for 2 and 1/2 years and kept it in good condition throughout. Today I closed the screen and went off to a farm park with the wife and kids. When we got back I opened 'er up and the left hinge seemed to prize open the side of the laptop by half an inch or so. I noticed also that the hinge itself was sunken well beyond what the right hand one is and that a loose piece of black plastic (sickle-shape down one half and straight albeit jagged from being broken down the other with dried glue on the back) was coming free - roughly 1 inch long by 1/3 wide.I have now looked up and read an alarming amount of articles and forum posts about the same issue - seemingly inferior quality of hinges in your laptops. Lots of questions have been raised about recalls and customer care measures but I have not come across any answers from HP.My warranty is expired but my feeling is that a limit of 2 1/2 years careful use of an 800 laptop is unpalatable. My insurers will not pay out for 'wear and tear' (which I do not believe this to be in the first place), nor will they pay for a manufacturers fault (my inclination from what I have read). This is not accidental damage so I am vetoed in that department too.I also contacted PC World who have offered to assess the damage (for a 50 fee) whereupon I will be charged more money for the repair/parts, or (in the very unlikely event, as they are the body who sold me ... My HP ENVY 17 has the same left hinge and casing issue  / design fault  as discussed many times within this support forum.I am now looking to HP to provide a customer focussed solution to what is now widely accepted as a 'not fit for purpose' hinge design of my HP ENVY 17.

My left hinge broke in such a way that I can't open my laptop without worrying that I'll completely break off the screen. The left hinge is now in a crooked orientation, which causes the immediate area above the hinge on the laptop lid to be cracked and lifted off. There is also a crack on the laptop lid above the right hinge similar to how the left hinge was before it broke. From my understanding, this hinge issue is a common problem with HP laptops. Since my laptop is out-of-warranty, I would like to get more information as to how to get this fixed.

My left case hinge broke and the whole bottom of the computer separates every time I lift the lid. This is clearly a design flaw.  I bought the 2 year extended warranty but it is not valid any more.  I think this screams "class action suit" and I bet there are hundreds or maybe thousands of people who have experienced the same design flaw.  No one has offered me a $150 repair, but the fact that they aren't willing to admit there is clearly a problem really bothers me and makes me think we should band together and bring forward a suit.
