What is a reasonable Broadband speed?

Question: What is a reasonable Broadband speed?

This morning yet again I found it impossible to open my Broadband although eventually it staggered into life sufficiently for me to open a Broadband Speed check wherein I obtained 55.27 Download and 9 Upload.
Could someone please tell me if that is a good, bad or indifferent speed?
I contacted my Broadband supplier and the system is at the moment great.

Preferred Solution: What is a reasonable Broadband speed?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: What is a reasonable Broadband speed?

Sorta depends on what you're paying for. Faster than anything I get

Hi,I need some help, I have Tiscali Broadband up to 8mb speed, my netgear router shows a download speed of, 8027kbps, and if I plug the SAGEM usb modem in direct i get a reading of 6.7mbs, neither of which are bad.... However, all my pc's (3) when doing speed tests on line are giving me a download speed from 43.1 to 160 kbps. One Pc runs Zonealarm the other AVG, the windows firewall is off, and if I turn the virus software off I get no speed improvement. 2pc are running windows XP pro and 1 windows XP 64? any ideas, this has been going on for about a week. Thanks

Answer:Broadband Router Speed OK, PC Speed SLOW????

See what the BT Speedtester reports your profle as click here If your profile is incorrect that could be limiting your download speed.Post back with the results.

Hi,

I am thinking of upgrading my DSL Broadband speed from the basic to the next level. My question is how much difference in performance will there be? What am to expect that will improve? What are the pros and cons on a faster broadband speed? Is broadband speed relative to modem speed?

Looking forward to your responses.
Thanks

Answer:Broadband Speed Vs Modem Speed

Broadband is normally MUCH faster than a dial-up modem. However, I think from your post that you already have broadband but want to upgrade to a more expense package. The difference in speed will be totally dependent on your internet service provider and what type of packages they offer.

Question: Broadband speed

I'm currently using Tiscali b/b and am generally quite happy. However, when I move my cursor over the 2 flashing tellies to the bottom right of my screen, it says "Speed 2.2Mbps"But I've just done a speed test click here which states my speeds as 560kbps downstream and 250kbps upstream. Is this usual? Are Tiscali fibbing with the speed?Cheers,Grezza.

Answer:Broadband speed

What speed are you paying for? The speed you quote would be for a poor line on 1 Meg.

Hi. I have a Freeline MT2000 connected to AOL via a Netgear dg834g and an ASUS WL-130g card. Recently my connection speed has dropped to that of dial up! My router stats say:Downstream: Speed 2368 kbps Line attenuation 54db Noise margin 15dbUpstream: Speed 448 kbps Line attenuation 15db Noise margin 20dbHowever, when I do a speed test on speedtest.net I get:Ping: 130ms Download: 126kbps Upload: 292kbpsMy wireless signal strength and quality is 100% and noise strength is only 16%. I've tried every channel on my router but still the same speed. Its driving me nuts, even the AOL homepage takes ages to come on. Any ideas?

Answer:Low broadband speed

Have you tested using a wired connection to rule out the wirless as the cause? Do you get the same low speed?

Question: Broadband speed

Hi folks. I'm running XP Pro SP2, AVG and ZA Pro with an internal Conexant Access Runner ADSL modem. Up to last week I had 1Mb/s Plusnet broadband, all sweet, happy bunny. Plusnet have notified me that their new 8Mb/s service has reached me, lovely, except when I do a speed test on Plusnet, I'm still only hitting around 1Mb download speed. My ADSL modem control panel tells me it is receiving at around 6Mb/s and transmitting at around 400Kb/s. I understand that the full 8Mb is subjective to certain conditions, but if my modem sez it is hitting 6Mb, shouldn't my speed test reflect this? Could I have a firwall or software issue slowing my transfer rates?Cheers

I think you are looking at Connection speed, an entirely different thing to download speed

Question: Broadband speed

Hello - I believe broadband speed partly depends on the number of people allocated by their ISP to a particular phone connection (contention ratio?).If I change to a less popular ISP with fewer customers in my area, will I get a faster download speed even though I'll still have the same exchange and phone line?I ask because my broadband speed has fallen significantly during the past couple of weeks, possibly coinciding with the arrival of a large number of students coming to stay in my area for the start of the University year.Thanks.

Answer:Broadband speed

There is normally a reason why less popular ISP,s are less popular. Slow speeds bad customer service etc. It might be a case of out of the frying pan into the fire.Have you contacted customer service re slower speeds.

Question: broadband speed

Hi, I have just switched from ntl to bt broadband and allthough the ntl connection was 4meg and the bt is 3meg, The bt one is so slow. I know that the ntl uses better cable than bt and that the bt one goes through the phone line but it is so much slower and i was wodering what speed i should be getting. I did a speed test and it came back as just over 93kbs. Any ideas? Thanks Jamie

Answer:broadband speed

That is slow for a 3mb/sec connection , roughly 512kb/sec should download at 60ish kb , 1mb/sec at 120k , 2mb/sec at 240k etc. you are downloading at about a quarter of what you should ideally get , I say ideally as it will depend on the time of day , the amount of other users online at the time and possibly the socket that your adsl modem is plugged in to , have you tried it in the main socket for the house . Answer:Broadband Speed

What speed is your broadband connection supposed to be and how are you checking it?<<< if I use the ethernet connection the speed realy flies (6.5.Mbps)is this normal >>>If connecting by ethernet, the Local Area Connection's Properties would normally show the speed of the LAN connection between PC and router(?), which would be 100Mbps. This, of course, isn't related to your broadband connection speed. Hence, what speed are you measuring and how?

Question: Broadband Speed

I have been with Sky for just over a year and when I signed up I was getting around 7mb download speeds. However of late, web browsing has become significantly slower and when I checked my router it was showing that I was in fact just clearing 2mb!. After a number of phone calls to Sky expressing my concerns I have been advised to change the ADSL Microfilter, replace the cable to the BT wall socket and check my Network card drivers are up to date. All these I have done with no improvement whatsoever. My last call to them resulted in Sky carrying out a full line check, which came back as no faults on either line or router and they concluded that the fault lies with my pc. This would be credible perhaps were it not for the fact that my wife's pc also has the same very slow browsing speed. Surely if the fault were the pc, this would not likely affect her as well? I have checked the drivers for the Network card and could not see any updated drivers, please help, thanks

Answer:Broadband Speed

It seems to be fairly standard procedure for ISPs to blame BT, for BT to blame the ISPs and for both to blame your PC!
If both you and your wife connect by ethernet cable to the router, even if one PC is switched off, try disconnecting its cable to see if the speed is still slow on the other computer. Then repeat the procedure with the other computer physically disconnected from the network. If the results still appear to be slow, see what results the speedtest.net site shows.
If you're connecting both computers wirelessly, see what sort of download speeds you get with a wired ethernet connection.

Question: Broadband Speed

How can I tell if my 1mb cable broadband is running at the right speed? I have gone onto different sites to get a speed check but I don't really understand the results. My oS is Windows XP Pro and my ISP is ntl. All I want to know is if it is running at the speed it is supposed to run at. I've just had an upgrade but it doesn't seem that much faster than the 300kbps I had before. Can someone please tell me how I can find out in language I can understand. The first test I did was at ADSL and the results were: Downstream actual speed 148 Kbps, Upstream Actual speed 28 Kbps. The second site was bandwidthplace.com and the results were: 532.5 kilobits per second. The third site was numion.com, which said Throughput 5580 Bps and Throughput 45 kbps. The last one was dslreports.com which gave me download speed of 951 kbps and upload speed of 42 kbps. I don't understand any of this. Please can someone help. Thanks in advance.

I assume that you mean that the PC's connection is 100Mbps rather than 100kbps. Either way, those are the speeds between the network card and your router / switch, nothing to do with the actual broadband line.

Question: Broadband speed

I am an unsophisticated user.  I have some questions regarding broadband speed.  I have AT&T DSL Elite Internet.  I found a link to an FCC site wherein you can test your broad band speed (link: http://www.broadband.gov/).  The results I got were as follows:

Download speed:  448 kbps
Upload speed:       231 kbps
Latency:                  42 ms
Jitter:                         2 ms

When I mouse over my internet icon in the system tray it says:

Local area connection
Speed:  100.0 Mbps
Status:  Connected

I went to the AT&T website and checked the various DSL options and they advertise as follows:

Pro internet:              Downstream speeds up to 3Mbps
Elite Internet:            Downstream speeds up to 6Mbps
Max Internet:             Downstream speeds up to 12Mbps
Max Plus Internet:     Downstream speeds up to 18Mbps
Max Turbo Internet:  Downstream speeds up to 24Mbps

Now for the questions:

1)  Can I assume the the connection speed of... Read more

Answer:Broadband speed

I made the original post above, 2 days ago.  More than a little ironically, today I received a letter from AT&T, dated the same day (March 4) that states, "As part of our ongoing effort to provide you with the best possible internest exprerience, we regularly conduct quality checks to test the speed of your AT&T High Speed Internet service at your modem.  Our tests indicate that you are experiencing throughput speeds slower than the speed tier associated with your service plan."

As a result, they are lowering my monthly price.  This raises 2 questions:

1)  Is there any chance that AT&T monitors this website and is taking the above action as a result?
2)  What is throughput speed?  Is that the speed going into my modem from AT&T, or the speed that is going into my computer from the modem?  If the former, does that mean that no matter what plan I choose, with whatever modem, the internet speed I currently have is all I'll ever have with AT&T?

Thanks again.

Answer:Broadband speed

What is your arrangement with your ISP? The speed you quote is very slow, more akin to dial up than broadband. Typically people with "Up to 8Mbps" only achieve 2 to 6Mbps downloads, depending how far you are away from the exchange, how many users are on the same "circuit", the time of day and other factors.Do let us know your ISP and contracted speeed. HI

I have O2 Broadband premium with the O2 wireless box II on up to 20 meg. I would only ever get 2-4mb so I called them up and they said it was because I was using an telephone extension cable from the master socket in the livingroom up to my room and to change it to a broadband extension cable.

So I bought a RJ11 cable and I have done a few speed tests using various sites and show higher speeds from around 7mb to 12mb (depending when I test them) but whenever I download something it always downloads at the same speed around 150kbs to 250kbs? how is this when the speed test sites say I can get up to 12mbs?

I checked my uncles PC (stays across the road) and he is on talk talk and varies from 7mb to 12mb like myself and downloaded the same file from cnet and he was downloading at 1.5mbs - 2mbs where I was only 150kb to 200kb?? both are connected with ethernet cables.

why is there a big difference in speed?

Hello & Happy New Year!

My ISP is BT & I am on the "Up To 8 Meg" package. When I use various Speed Test sites, they all show roughly the same figure of about 950 kbps for Downstream. However, when I complain to BT about this speed, they tell me to use their site: http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ & the results from the tests there confuse me.

Below are the last results I achieved & the Downstream figure is quite respectable!

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 2016 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 928 kbps

I have kept screen-grabs of previous tests & the IP profile for my line, (whatever that is... BT cannot give me a straight answer!), has varied such as, 1000, 1500, 2000 & 2500. There was one time when my line profile was 3500 kbps which resulted in 448 kbps Upstrem, 4224 kbps Downstream & an actual throughput of 3240 kbps.

When I use BT's site to see "How Fast Can I Go", I have had different figures on different days - anything between 3Mb & 4.5Mb

I find it hard to argue with BT's Tech Support when referring to the results from their site as they show a reasonable Downstream figure. My question is, why do all the other test sites I use show a figure of about 950 kbps for Downstream when BT's site shows a figure about double all these others?

Question: BT Broadband Speed

Some weeks ago I upgraded from 2MB to 8MB broadband with BT. At the time BT advised that the maximum speed I could expect from the service was in practice 6.5MB which was fair enough. I have since carried out several speed tests at different times of the day and week. The highest speed achieved has been 3MB whilst it often drops to just below 1MB. Is this typical in other people's experience or does it imply a problem?

Answer:BT Broadband Speed

It depends on how many people are online at the same time, the genral speed of the Internet and the distance from the exchange. Judging by other people's experiences this would seem to be fairly typical.G

Question: Broadband speed

What are the factors that effect this?My Sky broadband was lousy until we realised it was being restricted by BT!The distance from the exchange is a factor, but so is whether the children are on holiday or not!!So what slows it down?

Answer:Broadband speed

Distance from the exchange affects the potential connection speed. The further away from the exchange the higher your loop loss or attenuation figure is likely to be. If you check the graph click here you can see that with a downstream attenuation of 40db or less you should exect to a connection speed of 8 Meg on ADSL Max but as this increases the speed decreases.Children being on holiday and peak time slow downs doesn't affect your connection speed but can affect your download speed, this tends to be down to contention or capacity issues. There's a brief explanation of contention at click here Capacity is down to your ISP providing enough bandwidth for everyone. Any decent ISP should have enough bandwidth to cope with increased demand at peak times. I have experienced slowdowns at peak times but my ISP responded by upgrading the exchange.Another factor that can have an effect on speed is excess noise on your phone line either caused by internal or external sources. Removng the ring wire from your master sockets removeable faceplate can help reduce internal noise. "My Sky broadband was lousy until we realised it was being restricted by BT!"Are you on Sky's Connect service?

Question: broadband speed

I have tried "OOKLA" www.speedtest.net/ and www.broadbandspeedtest.co.uk and the results are quite different. Ookla gives twice the download speed results compared to the other. Can anyone recommend a speed tester?

Answer:broadband speed

The way I gauged my download speed was to download something large from GigaNews. After a few minutes any "surge" settles down and you get a steady rate. Tests with small data tend to favor ISPs that give a short burst, boost, or spike. If the download is less than 100 MB or so, it's too short to get past the download spike.

Question: Broadband Speed

After upgrading to AOL GOLD Broadband I have been told by AOL that I am on 1 megabit per second connection speed, and I'm paying the Gold rate which entitles me to that speed. But every internet connection speed test facility that I can find tells me I'm getting anywhere between 450 and 500 kilo bits/sec which is the rate for 512 not 1024. My BT 105 ADSL broadband modem is giving me a reading of: TX 288 RX 2272 which I cannot figure out.I have tried AOL LIVE HELP technical chat help lines but their reps tell me that they cannot understand what I am telling them so I should ring the technical help line.I rang the technical help line and after ten minutes he gave up and said he can't understand why this is happening and I should ring them later (so someone else gets the problem). Please can any of you offer me any advice whatsoever, I would be glad of it. It seems I am paying for 1024 and getting 512 and AOL either don't care or won't help through incompetence. And I cannot get anyone to put me through to a proper technically competent person.

Question: Broadband Speed

I live in the sticks in north Devon and my maximum download bandwidth/line speed is 1 megabyte, However, at the moment I?m getting as little as 87k and as much as 130k. I?m speaking to Orange my ISP about this and they are having a line check done. I should also mention that immediately prior to this event I had no Internet connection, which they rectified, and that up ?till then I had had no problems running at a speed of about 750/800kI have recently reformatted just drive ?C? on a 200 gigabyte HD which has two partitions. I?ve reinstalled the various programmes and then reloaded the work files saved on a DVD. Although everything seems to work OK when I boot-up, the usual beep is missing and certain little things that worked previously now don?t. For example, while I can scroll up and down with my mouse wheel in Excel it doesn?t similarly work in Lotus 123. The point of all this is to ask whether it?s at all possible that anything I?ve done could cause the bandwidth/line speed problem?Abel

I have tested my up to 8MBits broadband several times today using boradbandchoices speed test giving a value of around 2.73 MBits downloading and 0.37 MBits up loading all morning and early afternoon. What I do not understand is why it should vary so much during the day and between 2 different speed testers a matter of seconds apart. Anyone got any theories?

Question: Broadband Speed

Hi again guys, as you can see I am working my way through various problems I am encountering and, as I am not very knowledgeable, I need some more help.I currently have a 1 Mb broadband connection (midway in the house) the modem is connected directly to a DLink wireless router which is hard wired to my satellite box to enable 'card sharing'. Having just conducted a speed check on the broadband connection I get a reading of: Download speed of around 1Mb but only get an upload speed of 165Kbps. that 100 mbps is how fast you can transfer files from your pc to another pc on a network, not your internet speed. it will not change from upgrading internet services. you can test your internet speed by going to http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html and running there test. there are also other sites that will test your connection too. hope this helps

Question: Broadband Speed

Yes, that old chesnut!! I have been in contact with my ISP about my 8Mb connection, I am only getting an average of 200Kb speeds no matter what time of day I test it. Today, out of curiousity, I tested the line using my laptop and got a whopping 4Mb - much better. The laptop connects to the Internet through the 'slow' PC using a cross-over lead, so it uses the same ADSL modem a Zoom USB supplied by the ISP. My Internet settings point to this modem as the default and it appears in the Network connections, as part of my checks I have also checked the 'Modems' and I seem to have 2 entries in there, one with no connection and one on Com 5 according to the entry. The processor speeds of the two machines is similar although I think the laptop has a 'Mobile' Celeron so I don't know where to look next or if there is anything else I can try to pinpoint where the 'slow down' is on the PC; could it be that it thinks the modem on Com 5 is still there and so is not getting the full bandwidth?

First of all try twekaing the slow machine with TCP Optimizer from click here Set the slider to your xonnection speed, choose your netwrok adapter from the dropdown menu then click on Optimal settings, and Apply. Reboot the PC and see if it's the same.

Hi guys, I know this subject has been round and round, but can anyone advise me on the following:I was upgraded to 20Mb broadband when I changed packages with Virgin Media (i.e. cable) about three weeks ago, previously I was on 4meg and speed tests showed about 3650kbps download and 350kbps upload. Now, all the tests I have done from several (at least six) websites show 4500 - 5600kbps and 710 upload apart from the one that loads java script files which strangely enough shows around 8600kbps download and tells me my connection is probably 10meg.I contacted Virgin (cost of calls over 5) and the nice Indian man got me to download two game files at the same time from Virgins website and to tell him the speeds - each one downloaded at over 550kbps, giving a total of 1100kbps which this nice man said was ok for 20meg - is he right or what? My connection doesn't seem to be any faster than before, I expected pages to be opening a bit faster and such, but nothing has really changed, downloads don't seem to be any faster - anyone any ideas before I waste more money talking to India?Or am I expecting too much?

The test results can vary greatly, depending on which site you use, the location, and the time of day.

I'm fortunate to have a speed test site that my ISP provides locally, so the upload and download speeds are usually within 90% - 100% of what I pay for.
