I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: When I go to turn on my computer it just sits at the black s...

Install new windows or any os by boot method.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

About a month ago my aspire laptop started taking a few minutes to start up    I push the power button and the screen stays black but the backlit keyboard lights up and then after a short while I get a light gray flush every second or so for 10 minutes sometimes as long as 20 or 30 minutes and then eventually  it turns on.   My computer repair shop studied it for a while when it was a new problem and just three or four minutes of blinking and I was OK with living with that they said it might be something to do with the motherboard but they could not figure out why it was happening or what to do about it and this is a very highly rated computer shop  The Computer Cellar  in Durham NC.    At this point it takes 20 minutes to turn on and sometimes longer every single time,  which I am really not OK with.  Any tips or suggestions would be great.   Michael

I don't know if you're using Windows 10. The problem that you're having is not normal. I would backup my important personal files and then reset the computer to factory condition to help you rule out software problem. http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29934/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDY5MDczNzc... If you're using Windows 10, there's a known compatibility issue with Windows 10 and some versions of the Intel Management Engine Interface driver.....if you have Haswell-ULT.  And you have Haswell-ULT i7-4500U.  As a workaround, most people use the Windows 8.1 Intel Management Engine Interface driver.  As of 7/20/2016, Microsoft still has not released the updated Windows 10 Intel Management Engine Interface driver through Windows Update.  I was able to grab the updated Intel MEI driver off of Intel's website, but Intel has subsequently pulled it. http://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers So if you reset the computer to factory condition (Windows 8.1) and you still have the problem, then it's possibly/probably hardware. Ideally, you would use your Windows 8.1 USB factory default recovery drive to reset the computer.Your computer shop can help you wipe the drive with "diskpart clean" and use your USB factory recovery drive to restore your PC to factory condition.  But you can always try ALT-F10 method too. http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29934/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xN... So I know this isnt a big problem, but my parents got new laptops and I figured id hook em up with windows 10 since I have loved it. Well they have had nothing but problems blah blah blah, they just dont like change. One actual problem my father is having though is when he starts up his laptop.

Normally on his laptop it shows the hp symbol, than immediately the Win 10 lock screen that you click and than sign in. Since upgrading to Win 10 the laptop shows the HP Symbol, than sits at a black screen for 15 or more seconds until the mouse shows up, and than the lock screen.

He using an HP Envy 17 so its a decent laptop, pretty brand new only a couple months old, with Win 8 it used to be instant lock screen from the HP logo. Already went into the power settings to make sure the quick startup option was enabled and I upgraded the video card to the latest build. Any clue on how to fix this?

Answer:After win 10 upgrade, laptop sits at black screen upon startup for 15+ seconds

By "upgraded the video card to the latest build" do you really mean you updated the video driver to a Windows 10 driver? Did you also upgrade the chipset driver as well?

hello, Hoping you can help

I have a Asus running Windows 7.. recently its been lagging quite a lot..
a week ago I started having issues even just getting to websites like Youtube, and it would freeze up..
I ran a disk cleaner, defragment (which said only 3 % fragmented). I also ran 2 virus scans. both Microsoft Essentials, as well as Malwarebyes cleaner..

last night again I was lagging horribly.. when I checked My Computer. it showed my C Drive was in the Red, and veryyyy near full. Yet my Partitioned D drive showed near empty..

This morning I rebooted the laptop.. as soon as it powered up to show *Asus*. from that screen it goes to a black screen, with a dash. that's all I get..

Ive tried to remove the battery and unplug.. nothing seems to help.. im at a loss. Im hoping to get into the lappy to I can transfer and delete filoes from C drive..

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

?? Is My laptop dead in the water?? or can I fix this..

Tx for your help in advance

Last night my computer was working perfectly fine with no indication of a problem. I come home the next day to turn it on, and of course nothing happens. It get's power but theres no picture on the monitor, it's black. So i try to turn the computer off and now it wont turn off, so i turned i turned off the powerstrip.

So i started with the most simple the cords and such, but everything is in the right place. I examined the monitor, but it was working fine. So i turned it back on to see if i could find something. In the long run i found nothing and i came to the conclusion it has it's probly my motherboard or something is wrong with my powersupply or even my cmos battery.

It's to tricky for me i just want to know where to start. The bios wont even load and i dont have spare parts laying around to test things out. the other thing is that power will only go on and not off. So i'm thinking about trying a new power supply first. If you have any idea's why i'm haveing this current problem please let me know.

I turn on my computer, it begans to start up, and then the moniter just goes black and won't show the desktop or anything. It has done this every day for the past week or more and it's getting harder and harder to get onto the computer. What I do is turn the moniter on/off until it shows me a glimpse of the desktop, and then I mess with the screen saver power options (while it continues to keep going black and I have to turn the moniter on and off to get glimpes of what i'm doing), and eventually it just stops going black and works for the whole rest of the day until the next morning. I checked the FAQs and I heard people with the same situation mention video cards, but I'm not that great with computers and frankly I don't even know what that is. Help?

My computer that i own isn't working properly. Firstly, its about 4-5 years old the power button gets stuck. I've been fiddling with it from the outside to come out all the way since if it goes in all the way and doesnt come out, it keeps restarting. When i wiggle it out, it starts and goes.

Now onto my problem now. When i start up my computer, a screen pops up allowing me to press F1 for setup. if i don't click F1, my computer goes to a black screen with a _ blinking in the top right. I can't do anything from that point and when i press keys too many times, it starts beeping after i hit any key again.

Anyways if you guys could help me, I would be very thankful!

Answer:Turn on my computer, black screen

sounds like it may be time for an upgrade

have you made any hardware changes or installed new device drivers?

from what you describe it seems like the system is having some issues booting the operating system from the hard drive, or there could be another hardware fault causing the hangup... like the memory or motherboard itself. if you are able to view the POST screen upon startup (which displays all of the system information and keys to access BIOS etc...) then you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM to run repairs or possibly boot into safe mode by repeatedly striking the F8 key after the POST screen appears.

So I got a hp pavilion tx510us entertainment notebook (runs Vista) and it seems to turn on (like all the lights are on and it makes noises) but the screen is black/blank or whatever. And its not just a blank screen because then I would have been able to put my pass in and then hear the turn on music and stuff. The thing is this happened before when it was still under warranty so I sent it in for free and they sent it back and it turned on and it still had on all my stuff so it must have been an easy enough solution, but when I chatted with them again I guess they don't keep track of what they did to it and they want me to send it in again and that would cost a large sum of money because its no longer under warranty. I did a hard reset a few times and took out the memory module and put it back in agian but still nothing. So, anyone have any ideas?

My computer was dusty and may have been overheating. The fans were operating very loudly and i tried to turn on the screen but it is black. I cleaned the dust, and it still will not bring anything up on the screen. The fans work and i can hear the drives working. I tried changing the psu, cleaning the heatsink, and reseating everything. and removed the battery and put it back in to reset the bios. Nothing has worked so far. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated? Is it possible that i fried my motherboard or processor?

Ok...

So I got some new hardware for christmas... I got it all set up and it wouldn't function... I reset the BIOS and did some other things and it worked, BUT the ram was failing. So I swap out the ram for another stick of ram and at first it still fails but after a few times of taking the older ram out and reseating it it works. At this point i fiddle with my BIOS settings so my CPU will run full speed and all. I add the new RAM stick back in which i thought was bad and it suddenly works as well. The system seems to work fine for the better part of a week... Yesterday I came home to my computer off (which i hardly ever do intentionally). I turn it back on and windows hangs at statup so i restart and the hard drive just makes some noises like its looking for something but can't find it and the system never loads past the bios searching for IDE drives. I have a secondary hard drive, which is newer, and i switched it to the master and attempted to resinstall windows onto that drive, but when I got it to boot to the windows cd it hung up during insallation. I went to restart and the BIOS saw the drive as something different than it always had before and now all i get is an error saying "primary hard drive fail" or "secondary hard drive fail" if i try switching IDE ports. The original dead drive was an IBM Deskstart 40gig and the current (also not functioning) drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax16 40gig. I figured i'd just attemp to get an RMA on that... Read more

Small Desktop
Lenovo M92p (2988)

First thx for volunteering your time to help all us...

This is a computer that is NOT a server despite the computer name but a desktop I setup in our small 5 person volunteer office to have a machine to place files on and I created mapped share drives for all use to pull from it.

I installed Win7 in October 2013 set it to do no Windows Update and it has been fine until Jan 2014 where I come in see a BSOD. The PC is not used just sits as a file share so have made no software changes unless hardware is failing.

Yesterday I did all the Windows Updates in hopes it could fix the issue. There was a Windows Update for Graphics which has aused BSOD on some my older machines... On Graphics, The update from Lenovo was older than what was on the PC and MS Windows Update was more current so I picked MS.

After all that...got the BSOD again and I had JUST turned on logging for the minidump.... I have uploaded the file using your tool...

Thx

Answer:BSOD after computer sits for few hours or 1 day less

Can't say much until we see a dump.

Please run these tests and report back the results.

1. SFC /scannow to check windows for corruption - SFC /SCANNOW - System File Checker
2. Disk check for errors on the hard drive - Run Disk Check in Windows 7
3. Troubleshoot apps by a clean boot - Performing a Clean Startup
4. Memtest86+ paying attention to part 3 - RAM - Test with Memtest86+
5. Hard drive test from HDD mfg website - Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

About 5 days ago I noticed my computer would restart itself at some point during the day. I caught it in the act once, and it was a BSOD. I didn't have a chance to catch the type of error. My best guess on the timing is about 2 hours of idling.

I haven't made any hardware changes recently. I've also noticed during this time span that my computer's boot time has gotten a bit longer. It'll sit for a while on a black screen with my cursor on it, after the Starting Windows 7 screen and before my login screen pops up. Don't know if related.

Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes haven't picked up anything in my multiple scans. I've tried multiple error tests and have come up with nothing. Attached is the .zip file.

Answer:BSOD after computer sits idle

I have had a look at the Dumps, and i believe its caused by "Fastfat.sys"

Quote:
This issue may occur if either of the following conditions exist:
The Fastfat.sys file is damaged or missing.
The RAM in your computer is damaged or is not installed correctly.

Can this be moved to the Windows 7 Forum? I apologize for putting it in the wrong place!Hello this is my first post here although throughout the years I have read a few threads which have helped me immensely so I hope my actual post will have the same result!I started to notice a few days ago that my computer was running extremely slow, it happened when I was tranfering MP3's to my Mp3 Player. Now I've never had the problem of it moving slow and ive done this process while watching movies and other things as well. I stopped the transfer process, restarted my computer. I tried the transfer again and the same thing happened. I opened up Task Manager and looked at the CPU, it was fine, however the RAM was at almost 100% usage (I have 4Gb of RAM), and all I had running was Avast, and Windows Media Player (which was transferring my Mp3's). So I stopped the process again and restarted my computer logged in and everything was fine. When i finished with my computer I got up went and did some things that took a few hours, came back and went to get on the internet and the same sluggish performance happened again. Now I've done many things, every system/virus scan, defrag, scandsk, deleted programs I do not use,and I even bought new RAM, changed my Virtual Memory settings with help from a friend, and absolutely nothing has worked. The strange thing is it seems if I am actively using it say searching the web it seems fine but when its just sitting there do... Read more

Answer:RAM maxing out while computer sits idle

I have seen similar memory overruns and slow downs caused by the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. It is normally only used for universal plug and play devices. Type services in the search box and choose the one with the little gear beside it. Scroll down until you find the service named above. Double click the service, choose stop, and then in the drop down box select disable. Exit out of everything and restart the computer. Double check that Media player is still allowing you to transfer files.

So here it is i have an hp pavilion tx 2500 running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit 3 gigs ram 312 gig graphics card 2 ghz dual core processor 250 gig hard drive full touch screen.
I restart my computer and it will sit at the hp screen and stay their i will restart a bunch of times and finally will boot up all is good if i leave it on but as soon as i reboot same thing happens again some times i need to leave it unplugged and with the battery out for an hour before it will work

any thoughts

Answer:When computer starts sits on hp screen and does nothing

try removing a stick of RAM, sounds like something is delaying the boot. not sure if the battery could tie into this theory but it may be drained. have you tried leaving the battery out and keeping the computer plugged in? this will tell you if it's a problem with the battery or not.

I recently purchased all the parts for a high spec. computer, i assembled it and it does nothing. the motherboard doesn't even power up when i press the power button for any duration, but the cpu fan spins when i put the power lead half way in.the system specs are as follows:MSI KT400 UltraAMD Athlon xp2400+ATI Radeon 9500 (SAPPHIRE) AGP8x 128Mb60Gb HDD256Mb DDR RamRead 48x, write 48x, re-write 24x (CD-RW drive)

Answer:My computer just sits there and refuses to work

all you can do is recheck all cables, are you saying the fans dont spin when you put power lead fully in,you could try running the mobo out of the case on a anti-static surface to see if its a short circuit, presume there are no system beeps.

So I'm running an older computer. Started with vista, went to xp, then upgraded to Win 7 64x after the upgrade advisor said everything would be ok. Immediatly I started getting BSOD and after reading many message boards I decided to swap out the ram with new ram. This didn't seem to resolve the issue so I removed 1 stick ( mobo holds 2 ) and things seemed to stabilize until i let the machine idle for 5-10 mins then it would BSOD with mem management errors or irq not equal or less errors. So I upgraded drivers, got all windows updates, tested RAM, tried stripping hardware down to bare minimum, removed anti virus, and like 100 different things. Everything ran fine for like a year with vista and xp and now I can't get anything done. The only time it seems to run fine is if I'm running World of Warcraft or streaming video otherwise the BSOD can and will strike at anytime. I've including some of my most recent dumps. I'm only running 2 gigs at the moment because that is all that's allowed per slot and if I try to put a 2nd stick in it blue screens almost immediately. This made me think maybe the slot was bad but I've tried switching it between slots and different sticks and that doesn't seem to make a difference.

Answer:BSOD when computer sits idle

Test your RAM using Memtest86+. Let it run until 6-8 passes have completed or errors have been found.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Enable Driver Verifier. Enabling this should hopefully crash your system and then point to the faulty driver that is causing problems. However before you do, it is advised that you create a system restore point and backup first.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Make sure all Windows updates are installed including the latest Service Pack.

I've seen this problem posted a lot, but never with all of the same details as me.  I have Windows 8, but unsure if 64 or 32, I"m guessing 64.  I have a sealed battery, so I'm unable to remove the battery.   I rarely see my model number mentioned at all. I have turned the computer off and back on several times with peripherals removed.  Right now, it's on and open (so it's not asleep) and not plugged in.  All I can see and get is a black screen.  The caps light blinks now and again. I really would rather not reset and lose everthing, of course, who does?   What do I do?

HI,
My problem started back when i tried to install windows 7 on another disk, but it would not. Now i did this while my primary windows 7 hard drive was already istalled. after i gave up on trying to get windows to install onto this secondary hard drive, i rebooted the computer to find that my primary ssd would not load windows, and simple came to a black screen that said:

Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to restart

then i would press a key and it would say:

Reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

I have no recovery disk and most definitely do not understand what remove disks or other media means because I removed the windows installer dis and tried again but nothing happened. Please help, i am so confused, thankyou.

i am using my laptop to report this.cause i can't use the one with the black screen.HELP!!!!!! when it first comes on its like it tries to start but just stays black.can it be fixed or do i have to buy a new screen?(i'm not sure if its called the screen or the monitor.i just know that when i turn the tower on,there is no picture .

Answer:black screen after i turn my tower to my other computer on.r

If you do not see the message "No Signal" on the monitor screen, very likely it's the monitor itself which is faulty or "dead".To check if it is indeed the monitor which needs replacing, connect it to your laptop if possible (there should be a VGA port on one side of your laptop so you can connect the monitor using the same VGA cable that connects monitor to your PC). If the monitor does not work on your laptop either, you need a new monitor. However, if your tower is not starting up it won't be a faulty monitor. There is something wrong inside the tower. Get someone to check it over, maybe needs a new PSU (Power Supply Unit) which fits inside the tower.Do not rush out to buy a new monitor if the tower is not starting up as the problem will be inside the tower.message edited by phil22

My wifes laptop has developed a problem. On booting it starts with the "Windows starting " logo and then goes to a black screen and goes no further. It looks like the hard drive is still flashing away giving the impression that underneath it is still working but no picture. We want to use the repair disc that came with the laptop but because we cant see anything to shut the computer down via windows we are having to use the power button and therefore it prompts to start up again in safe mode because it was shut down unusually. We want to close it down completely and let the repair disc do its work on boot up from fresh start. Because we cant see anything on the screen to initiate shut down via windows is there another way of shutting down completely for the above reasons.
Also do I need to press f2 and tell the system boot from the cd (repair disc) or can I leave settings as is and it will do it automatically. Answers appreciated asap. Many thanks

Answer:How else do I turn off windows when computer has black screen.

On many laptops pressing and releasing the on/off button acts as a re-set but if you hold the power button down for 5 to 10 seconds the machine will turn off completely.

I was playing a game on my PC while it was storming out and the power surged. Before I could unplug my pc the power came back on and my computer started back up. After starting back up it said installing update do not turn off the computer. I waited until it was done then it brought me to a black screen with a Windows logo and a circular loading bar. I waited somewhere between 5-10minutes before holding down the power button until it turned off. Upon turning the computer back on all the fans would work and everything it would show the blue screen that says to press esc then brings me to a black screen where it would have a _ mark in the top left and beep non stop. It isnt a long beep or anything its just multiple beeps non stop until I turn it off. I have tried taking out the ram and putting it back in but it just keeps beeping. I did a mem test and it showed that nothin was wrong with the ram. The beeps are high pitched and very fast. I have a video showing what happens if there is a way to post it.

Hello,

I've got an interesting problem that has recently cropped up.

I like to have my gaming PC hooked up to my television with an HDMI output. I have a 700W Power Supply, and it is running a Radeon HD 6770. I bought a cheap wireless mouse and keyboard to help me reduce the clutter in the house. Once I purchased the wireless mouse and keyboard, my computer would just not be stable anymore, if I let it sit overnight, the computer would inevitably have to be rebooted (typically by disconnecting the power from the power supply). I took the computer down to my basement and started troublleshooting it from that point. The computer still exhibited the loss of stability, it crashed on me on a couple of occasions when not doing anything to it. I decided to take all of the USB connectors out (X-Box controller and wireless mouse and keyboard), and see what happened then. Once I disconnected the wireless mouse and keyboard fob, the computer stayed alive for an entire week. I chalked it up to just having a cheap wireless mouse and keyboard that doesn't play nice with Windows 7, so I bought a new Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard 2000, and moved it upstairs. After about six hours in the living room it crashed again. I'm hoping that someone can take a gander at the minidump file and help me figure out exactly what is going on with my machine.

Hi I'm posting this to see if anyone else is experiencing this and if it's a Windows 8 issue.

While using Windows 8 I've noticed that if I leave the computer on and not do anything on it the fan will start up and spin really fast. As soon as I move the mouse and start using the the computer it calms down again.

Answer:Fan spins fast when computer sits idle

It has to be the optimisation service or how that is it called, maintenance.

Look right in the taskbar and see if there is a small clock on the action center icon next time it happens.
It happened to me too and it seems to use much of the cpu, that's why the fan goes crazy.

Sometimes .NET optimisations also occur in the background when pc is idle, so if you've scanned for viruses/trojans and you are clean then there is nothing to worry about.

I have a weird problem that happened once a month ago and now has been happening consistently for the past few days. Previously, if I shut my computer down when it got to "Saving your Settings" it could take up to about 30 seconds. Now it seems like it's just a few seconds like it's not really saving the settings.

The problem I'm having is that if I turn my computer off for a few hours and come back it boots into Windows fine but if I leave it off overnight and boot the next morning I have problems. Just after the Windows logo appears the screen goes blank like someone disconnected the VGA cable and the hadrd drive no longer runs. I have to do a hard reboot. Then I get the screen asking if I want to boot with my last known good configuration. This used to work a few days ago. Now if I choose this option I just go into a loop back to the same screen. The only way to successfully boot is to go to Safe mode and choose a System Restore.

I use Microsoft OneTouch Care and scanned for viruses and adware. Nothing. I scanned with Spybot. Nothing. I did runk CHKDSK and it found a bad file in MYDocuments that it fixed and nothing else. I have defragged succesfully.

I went into my bios config and turned off all other hardware so it boots to my C: drive only. No conflicts show in the Windows Device Manager.

I have AOL 9.0 VR and ran the Computer Checkup utility and that didn't find anything either. I ran MSCONFIG and made sure nothing odd was running in... Read more

Hi Guys,

I got a virus this morning and moved it to chest and then I restarted it, when it began to boot, it froze for about a minute at the boot screen then proceeded to load after this, so I shut it down and turned it back on and had to wait about a minute on the boot screen to get past it, it so I went into the bios and clicked the reset to optimized defaults incase it had a problem, so I saved it and exited.

The computer then booted it as it would do when i turn it on but now the screen stays black?

Anyone have any suggestions what to do? as its just black and I can't see anything to get into the bios or such?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Turn Computer On Screen Is Black After Bios Change?

Try unplugging the PC and removing the CMOS battery from the motherboard for 30-45 minutes. This will clear the BIOS settings.

Hope this helps.

I'm using Firefox and SBC/AT&T DSL. My problem started a few days ago. If my computer sits idle for an hour or two (I haven't tried to get an exact time), when I return to it it's lost its internet connection. I restart the computer and it's fine. It started happening right after I had installed a batch of Windows security updates. My firewall is the ZoneAlarm free version.

Answer:Solved: Losing connection after computer sits idle

You need to add your DHCP IP to the Trusted Zone in your Zone Alarm > Zones panel. In case you do not know what the IP is..

1. Go to Run type in command, hit 'ok', and type ipconfig /all then press enter. In the returned data list will be a line DNS and DHCP Servers with the IP address(s) listed out to the side.
2. In ZA on your machine on the Firewall>Zones tab click Add and then select IP Address. Make sure the Zone is set to Trusted.
3. Click OK and then Apply and see if that works to fix it..

DHCP servers use the UDP protocol that is blocked by Zone Alarm unless the server is in the Trusted zone. Basically, your IP is not being renewed.

Yup, that's about it. Ever since I tried removing a partition with Windows 7 on it and doing a fix MBR and Boot, (because Windows 7 had overwritten my windows XP boot sector,) it seems to have messed up my computer. So for you information, I have my main hard drive, set to Boot device 1, supposedly with the correct files on it, and should be booting. It has only one partition with Windows XP Home SP3. The other hard drive is just a data hard drive. I downloaded three critical files off of a computer boot site, put them on that flash drive, then my computer boots up fine. But when I leave the flash drive unplugged, my system will just sit at a screen after the POST with a blinking cursor. So can anyone think of what may be wrong with the hard drive?(Remember, the operating system inside of it working fine. There's something wrong with the boot process, though.)~TGP1994

it only starts working like its suppose to after I shut down, wait and boot back up. After that its going great but it seems like I cant let it sit. I tried a reboot timer program but that didnt work cause my system would hang on and either not reboot or just stick on the splash screen till I came to the system in the morning and did a manual power up/down. Thanks for your time. E8500 @ 3.16Ghz8.00 GB RAM

So my computer recently started to do this: When I have a game going, after a while the computer will freeze for a couple of seconds, then the monitors turn black (i have two monitors) for a second and start again, but then the game hangs. I play games that are a bit demanding for example World of Warcraft.
What can be the problem here? Can it be that my CPU is too warm?
I'm new here, so I'm sorry if I'm in the wrong category.
I built my own computer, I believe the chassi is a Cooler Master big tower. AMD FX8120 8-core processor 3GHz, 16GB RAM, 64-bit Windows 7, ASUS HD7750 video card, M5A99FX pro R2.0, No optical drive (because I am going to replace it), a 931GB Harddrive, Fortron FSP600-50ARN Power supply 42A 504W on the +12V rail.

power light comes on but the screen remains black there is no sound nor any flickers please help operating hp 2000 dual core windows 7 thank you very much!

Answer:turn on the computer and power light goes on but screen remains black

If this is a notebook PC, try connecting an external monitor to the VGA port. If the display comes up on the external monitor, it points to an issue with the screen.

If there is no display on an external monitor connected to a notebook PC, it points to an issue with the motherboard and will require a professional diagnosis.

Hope this helps.

This was difficult to summarize in the title because it does a series of things.

I've visited this site for many years but haven't posted before. I consider myself a relatively advanced computer user, but this problem has exhausted my diagnositic skills.

OS is XP pro. The computer is from the early Vista era, but I had them load XP instead when I bought it.

Because I am not constantly watching the computer, I don't have every step in the exact sequence. (I switch between two computers as I slowly transfer everything to the new one.) The problem happens when the computer has been running for at least a couple of days, as far as I can tell, so I can't simply recreate it at will. It has happened fairly regularly for the past month at least.

This can happen when few or no programs are running. I usually turn on that PC because there are a few things I still need, but once it started having this problem, it's rarely more than Skype and my email, sometimes only Skype or nothing. Lately, I've avoided opening a browser.

One of the first symptoms is some of the desktop icon text turns black instead of the normal white I selected. You can see that in the last photo. At that time, some text had re-appeared after missing for a while (clicking on the icons can sometimes bring back the text).

Eventually, text disappears from places like the title bars, list of email, etc. (not text in a document, but that would probably disappear too if I didn't cl... Read more

Obviously something's not right with that computer, and I have to say it sounds like some kind of virus/malware.  I'd try booting that XP system to Safe Mode and doing scans with Malwarebytes and Avast.  Some viruses can hide in normal mode.  If that doesn't work, there're programs you can download from here ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows/ ) including AdwCleaner, Junkware Removal Tool, and TDSSKiller, but let's wait and see if the Safe Mode scans will help.

As you appear to know, MS dropped support for XP 4/8/14, so it's just going to become more and more susceptible to problems with time.  I assume you're copying things to that new computer to resolve that very thing.  If all you need is the data, you could always remove the hard drive, put it into an inexpensive enclosure (around $25 cost), and plug it into a USB port on the new computer.  You could also boot a Linux disc or flash drive on the old computer and do the copies that way.  Ubuntu, Mint, and Puppy versions are three that I'm familiar with and know to be easy to use.  You can read about and download a Ubuntu ISO file from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop .  You can then either burn it to a DVD or put it on a flash drive using the directions here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows .

Good luck.

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I also have a HP 1740 monitor that turns on then in a few seconds the screen goes black and the power goes off.

Does any one know the problem and if they can be repaired or do they go to the recycle.

Thank You,

I have the same problem but I have a Viewsonic vx1940w and it flickers and has a little buzz then goes black, but the power light says its on. When I push the power button it comes back on for 1-2 seconds and goes black again. Is this a backlight problem or a power issue, and how difficult or expensive would it be to fix?

After installing Windows Service Pack 2 on our other computer, it started to freeze up, the screen would go black and it won't turn off. Control/alt/delete won't work, the power button won't shut if off, all we can do is pull the plug. We uninstalled ServicePack2 thinking that was the cause, but it still randomely does this. Sometimes it does it while playing various games and other times when just surfing the web. No warning of any kind, just a black screen and not being able to turn it off at all. I was wondering if system restore back to before we installed the Service Pack would work, or reinstsalling windows (a huge pain) or complete reformate (a bigger pain). Anyone have an easier suggsetion?

Answer:Black screen and won't turn off

There is no harm in trying system restore as it is reversible.

ControlPanel>Settings>PowerOptions set everything to Never. If there is a Hibernate tab, go to it and disable hibernation. Then go into ControlPanel>Settings>Display and turn off your screensaver altogether. If your problem is solved, you can put the screensaver back on, altho I would choose a diff one that what you had first. If the problem stays gone, you could go back to the orig screensaver and see if it is ok.

I have a HP Probook 4710s. The screen remains black when I turn the computer on. The other lights work, like the power button and caps lock while turning on. It happened suddenly, the screen worked perfectly earlier. I tried unplugging the charger, taking out the battery and holding the power button etc but it did not work. What could be the problem and how can I solve it? Thank you

Answer:Black screen (won't turn on)

Shine a light on the screen and see if the image is there but just faint. If so, the backlight failed. Otherwise, I'd suspect a video issue (video chipset, cabling, screen).

This is a machine I built from scratch about six months ago. Upgraded to Windows 10 about two months ago. I keep getting very random crashes, sometimes once a week, some times more. Yesterday it happened twice.

It seems to only happen when the computer is unattended for a while. I'll have it on overnight and in the morning I have a black screen, sometimes with only the mouse cursor present.

As kind of a side issue, when turn it off then reboot, I have to hit F2 to get into the ASUS BIOS. Somehow the BIOS seems to change on it's own and drops the Patriot Blaze SSD from the boot path, so I have to hit F8, highlight Patriot Blaze, then it boots normally. In the past, I thought I fixed this boot issue by flashing the latest BIOS. It worked for a while and boots off the SSD, then after a week or two suddenly the SSD is dropped from the boot path.

There weren't any minidump files, so I am attaching the text of the Windows MEMORY file, which I got using Windows WinDbg (X64).

So I'm at work and when I hit ALT+TAB, the pop up comes on but it doesn't actually switch windows. See example below:

When I'm at home and hit ALT+TAB, I can switch between windows without any issues. What I have to do is basically arrow over to where I want to go and either hit enter or click it with the mouse. Does anyone know why this is happening? First time I've seen it and not quite sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:ALT+TAB Just Sits On Screen

Just a crazy suggestion but have your Windows and ALT keys got swapped or confused. Your work computer behaviour sounds more like the Windows + Tab keys are being pressed.

im prepping my case again because my new processor and ddr2 should be here on wednesday

i went to transfer my netgear card from my old pc to this one, and its compatable but dosent click all the way in.

when i take the board out the card seats perfectly, the brass standoff i used is the same height as the pressed standoffs. and the other size standoff i have will raise the board so much it might crack.

would this card be ok only being half in? its actually more like 3/4 in and toward the back it sits in all the way.

the only solution i have is to stack round carboard circles under the pci standoff or i can remove the backplate to the card but then it will wobble in the breeze and put alot of stress on the connector when the box is placed straight up.

ideas? lol

Answer:Motherboard sits too low??

with card in parallel check gap between tab and case
make sure the bottom of bracket has slight bend in it ,to back of case
now whats the diff between the shorter stand offs and the longer ones
if it's close to the gap size use the longer standoffs
you should look close at the way the bracket is attached to the card you can sometimes get a little adjustment out of it here by loosening the screws
look at the angle of the top tab should be bent 90 degrees
look to see if MB back plate is caved in a little
card should never be canted on angle
my common MB standoffs are 0.250 +- .010
thats 1/4 inch in size 6.35 MM

I have a Compaq Notebook PC with Windows 7. I was using it the other night and i locked it as I always do, and I opened the lid the next morning and the screen was black. So I shut it down with the power button and turned it back on, but the screen was still black. I don't know what to do with it. I haven't even had it a year. I bought it February of 2010. I really need help, I have no clue what to do... Please help!!

Answer:My laptop will turn on, but the screen is black.

Well, you should of posted in Windows 7 forum, so I'll move it for you. But being it is less then a year old, and I've never heard of a laptop with less then a year of warranty, you should contact Compaq about getting it repaired. But things to check, is the brightness turned up? There should be a key on the keyboard that'll adjust the brightness levels. Also, most Windows laptops have an option to turn the screen off when connected to an external screen. Look for that button on the keyboard and cycle it a few times and see if your screen comes back to life. Also, find a monitor to plug into the video out port on the laptop and see if you get a picture on it.

So I was upgrading my V15 nitro black edition right. I opened it up no roblem and firs tinstalled an M.2 SSD and the computer still turn on and stuff after I installed that so I was able to clone my OS onto it. So then I turned off the PC so I could install a 2.5 SSD instead of the stock HDD that is already in the laptop. I didn't do anything differently from the first time, didn't touch any other cables or anything on the motherboard, but the laptop simply wont charge or turn on! I did some digging and found this post which is similar to my problem.http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/help-acer-asipre-v15-nitro-wont-power-up-on-battery.785204/ They talked about some microswitch, but I made sure everything was tight and in place and still nothing won't turn on. I even tried manually pressing what I assume is that microswitch, above the HDD bay, and still no results. I also tried pushing the button to reset your battery on the back of the laptop with a needle and that did nothing. Does anyone have any solutions????

Greetings all, so lately I've been having some problems with my Dell Vostro A860 that runs Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit service pack 2. Anyway recently I've been having problems with my laptop. I often leave my laptop on while I'm around the house doing things, mainly it's downloading or running a virus check, but when I return the screen is off (which is good, I set my screen to turn off after a few minutes) but when I try to get the screen to turn on again by pressing a key on the keyboard or clicking the touchpad or moving it nothing happens. I can't get the screen to turn back on and so I am forced to hard reset my laptop which I really don't like to do. When I start up the computer again it works fine but I notice that not much of my downloads or scan have been completed like the computer froze pretty early on.

At first I thought it was a virus or something so I posted on the appropriate forums on here, here is the link to that topic:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic414131.html

Unfortunately it appears that this isn't the problem so now I'm here trying to find help to resolve this issue. I hope someone out there knows the cause of this problem and a way I can fix it. Thanks in advance!

Ok this is kind of weird. Ive recently installed a game and while playing I miss typed some keys (which are near the region of ESC, including that one, the one next to 1, and a sleep button). Somehow, a combination of miss typed keys lock my computer. It stops, then the screen goes black, and the CPU light starts to blink and the fan runs likes crazy.

Then nothing..., i cant turn the CPU off, cant restart it, cant press any key to do anything. The computer just wont turn off. The only way to restart the system is to pull the plug, but that has caused my some trouble already.

It has been happening to me sometimes (i think around four or five times) and i need to know what is happening to my computer and how to solve the problem without pulling the plug if this comes to happen again.

Thank you very much for the help (and sorry for my bad english)

Parbes,

It sounds like it is having a software issue, there are a couple things that could help resolve it.

You can attempt to boot into safe mode to see if it's just a video driver issue. If so, you might be able to perform a system restore to roll the system back to when it was working correctly.
You can attempt to refresh (recommended first) or restore your system.

Hey, I'm not 100% sure of my laptops name and operating system, I believe it's an X360, but regardless it's a 2 in 1 laptop with a non removable battery. My computer made a little noise and then won't turn on (display is off) and I can't figure out why. When I charge it, sometimes there will be no light on, sometimes there will be an orange light, and sometimes there will be a white light on. When my computer worked fine there would be a flashing white light on, but now there isn't, letting me know there's a problem. So what do I do? From research I've seen do a hard reset, but it always mentions that I have to pull out a battery and my battery is non removable. So what would I do? Is there a way to do this where I don't have to remove a battery?

My Thinkpad T420s went dead a few days ago. And after significant effort I found a solution, one which is not mentioned anywhere else. I believe this applies to most Thinkpads. To save you time, if trying all the solutions offered by most (static discharge, backup battery) don't work, then give the LED cable a try. This is what happened: I was walking from one room to another with the laptop powered on, holding it flat with my two hands, when it went off. Nothing would bring it back on. When pressing the on button the lights would fire up, and the fan would turn on, but very slowly, gasthering speed progressively. My HD is a SSD so no HD to spin. And the LCD/screen/display (using all keywords to help people find this) would remain pitch black. So I started researching, reading, and trying all possible solutions I would read about. I tried the static discharge (pressing the on button in different patterns to discharge electricity). No luck. I tried unplugging the backup battery (the small battery inside the laptop shaped like a coin) and leaving it unplugged overnight. No luck. I tried all combinations of the two above. No luck. I tried booting up with charger, with battery, and with both. I tried different chargers. I even tried leaving the laptop in the refrigerator for a few hours. No luck. I tested it without the RAM DIMMs, and it would beep as follows: Three short beeps, pause, three more short beeps, and one short bee... Read more

Any suggestions that would start the computer up again without killing our hard drive? Thank you!

I have a Dell Latitude C610, with Win2K. My hubby says he played a music CD he made recently & the laptop froze up. He says the CD played OK. He took it out, laptop still froze, turned it off for a few hours, & when he tried again, nothing would work. The CD plays OK in my desktop, so it seems that's not the cause, was just trying to accurately report what happened.

I come home, check it out, the screen is black, and it's still warm, & I can't turn it off. The on light is lit, the battery light is blinking. I tried unplugging it, but it stayed on using the battery. Nothing happens when I push the power button. I know a black screen isn't a good sign. I'd just like to turn it off & back on again, that works with my desktop.

What else should I try?

Answer:Screen black, & can't turn Laptop off !

remove the battery unless you have a warranty of some sorts. If not open heart is in order.

I clicked on the shut down button, as usual, and i closed the computer. However, I noticed that the white blinking light stayed on, like it does when it is in sleep mode, so i opened the computer and it turned on, except the screen is completely black and I can only see the mouse pointer. You can hear the machine running but the screen is entirely black. Nothing shows up, no log in screen or anything, and if I push the off button on the side of the laptop, it goes into sleep mode. HELP!Also, earlier in the day I clicked on a link and it said that it gave me a virus, so I ran the antivirus multiple time and found nothing, could this be the problem?

I just got my T61 and this morning the LCD suddently went black when I was browsing the net. It did not go back to the normal mode since then. It is not in sleep mode coz the video was still playing. The only thing which does not work is the LCD. The situation is like the LCD goes to energy save mode that it is black but you could still see little content. I need to use the external monitor now and the external screen works fine. I am not sure what went wrong. Could anyone help? Many thx!!! cheers

Answer:LCD went black, how to turn back to normal

So can you see content on your screen or not?If yes, is seams that your background light has gone, and that is expensive to repair, unless you have warranty, of course...

For several months the monitor (LCD) turns black for about 3 seconds, returns to normal for about 3 seconds, then black for another 3 seconds and back again to normal. This can happen off or on line, there is no loss of connection or work. This can occur at anytime during PC activity ? in most cases it is just once and rarely twice in the session. At first I thought that it might be the monitor, but having just acquired a new Acer 19?, I am still confronted with the same problem, which leads me to think that it might be the PC.It is a Powerc built AMD Sempron 3000+ Athlon.OS XP Home.I would appreciate any comments from members has may have had a similar problem.Thank you.

Answer:Why does monitor screen turn Black?

Answer:my hp pavilion DV7 it does not turn on ( the screen is black...

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then we'll move to the next step.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds); (if the computer doesn't power on, move to the next step)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

I am posting this problem now, although after searching the forums there are some things I should try when I get back to the problem computer, such as starting in Safe Mode or reinstalling my video driver. I'm not sure I have seen this exact problem though.

It is a Compaz 700 series laptop running WinXP Home with 256mb RAM. All WinXP updates are installed. I'm running eTrust antivirus and on an encrypted wireless network behind a router, run AdAware frequently and delete everything it finds.

I've had the computer for over two years and this problem has starting occurring within the past couple of months. It used to happen only occasionally and seemingly randomly, but now it happens every time I start up, usually within a couple minutes, and with no applications running according to Task Manager.

There will be a loud click or pop sound effect, the desktop will flash black and white, and then various items will turn black - usually, the taskbar and various (some or all) icons on it, Start menu, and the menu bars of any windows that are open. The blacked-out menu items and taskbar icons still work - that is, if I double-click in the clock area of the taskbar I get the Date & Time control panel and if I click in the Close or Minimize area of an open window's menu bar, that will happen. Also, if I open new windows, those menu bars are not black, but sometimes they turn black eventually. However, there's no way to get rid of the black, short of rest... Read more
