Enable third party browser extentions

Question: Enable third party browser extentions

Hello everyone,
I am facing a problem with the internet explorer and third party extensions.
We are trying to make a third party extension work even if the "Enable third party browser extensions" box is unchecked (Internet options --> Advance --> Browsing).

We create a GPO with 2 parameters in the internet explorer security:
The GPO configuration are located at: Computer Configuration --> Policies --> Administrative Template Policy definitions --> Windows Components --> Internet Explorer --> Security Features --> Add-on Management
1. Deny all add-ons unless specifically allowed in the Add-on List.
2. Add-on List (We add our extension CLSID).
In addition, we add all the websites that we need to the trusted site zone also via a GPO.
Everything works fine as long that the "Enable third party browser extensions" box is check.
If i uncheck the box, the extension that i add to the "Add-on List" is not working.
There is any way i can use third party extensions and to uncheck the "Enable third party browser extensions" box?
Thanks

Preferred Solution: Enable third party browser extentions

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Stats: Windows XP Home SP2, IE 6 (only used for Windows Updates and extremely occasional Office Updates), Firefox 1.0.0.11 for all regular browsing, OE for email.I'm setting up a new laptop and want to tweak IE Internet Option settings to make it more secure. I was wondering about the setting under the Advanced Tab that reads:Enable third party browser extensions (requires restart)Right now, it is checked. 1. Is it better to have this checked or unchecked in my case?2. Why does it require a restart? 3. Is there anything "unsafe/unsecure" about having it either checked or unchecked?4. Any other opinions on what to tweak in regards to security on IE?Thanks for the help! Happy Holidays!

Third party cookies seem to be enabled by default in Firefox, can I have peoples thoughts about whether or not they should be disabled?

Answer:Enable or disable 3rd party cookies

Some sites will not work at all if cookies are disable
personally I just clean them all out at the end of each session with ccleaner ( you can set it to leave certain ones to save you having to log in every time)

Hi everyone !

I think the description above says it all.

What's safer for surfing the net on a previous version of IOS ?

Thank you for reading

Answer:Safari vs 3rd party browser on iOS 9.3.5

I prefer using safari + adguard for ios => good combo without slowdown
safari is still the fastest and the most compatible, most convienient browser for iOS. I use other browsers sometimes but may have to comeback to safari for sending a pdf to my pdf reader, for example

I also use puffin free + alternate-DNS to block ads within puffin (puffin pro doesn't have ads within the browser). Very fast, sometimes faster or slower than safari, has a data compression, a built-in flash player. With alternate DNS, I don't see any ads in puffin free. use it like the pro version => this may be a choice for you. The speed depends on your region because they process your data over their server => security risk

I tried dolphin and chrome but I didn't like both. There were no convincing features

I am encountering problems with IE in XP. When I click on my IE desktop icon the PC works , etc but IE doesn't start up and I see no error messages. As soon as I go into properties and uncheck the "Enable third-party browser extension" my IE starts up. The concern I have is that I recently (yesterday) purchased McAfee online and when it came time to download and install the software the McAfee web page showed the yellow triangle (Error on Page) on the bottom of the page and am wondering if unchecking third-party would have caused this.

Answer:XP / IE / Third-Party Browser Extensions

Keep all the Install on demand options and the Enable third-party browser extensions option UNchecked.

That would not have had any effect on downloading McAfee ( ) from the Internet.

Problem: When enabling third-party browser extensions via checkbox on Tools - Internet Options - Advanced, browser freezes with hourglass on screen and nothing at all works. When this box is unchecked, i.e. disabled, the browser does work, but items such as Google Toolbar do not work and are not visible, since they require the third-party extension box to be enabled. Please advise what I can do to allow apps such as Google Toolbar to work.

In Windows, Internet Options, 'Advanced' tab is an option to"Enable third-party browser extensions". It is enabled bydefault, but I believe that I have always disabled in the past. I just discovered something called "Tracking Protection"which apparently works by way of a browser extension anda list of websites that are to be ignored. The list is providedby an outfit called "Disconnect.me". If this is as good as itappears at first look, I want to use it. This is a more complex issue and will probably require a deep understanding of windows. In the process of solving this I have ruled out browser type, program type (where the link is received in), and error with browser. The best assumption that I can make is that this is a system error. Something with the instillation of windows 7 itself. This problem however, which has been on my computer for quite some time now, was not always there. It developed about a year back and I have since been to busy to work on trying to fix it. Okay, now that the introduction is over, here is the problem.

It is simple and complex at the same time. To sum up the entire problem in simple terms, I can not open links sent via skype, attached to an image inside of a program, or in some cases inside of a windows explorer.exe file itself. I may be using this term incorrectly here but I will refer to them as 3rd Party Links.

Example of a link that I can't open
Now when I say I can not open links I do not mean I am unable to view the webpage. I am saying that I can not click a link to open it. I am forced to copy the link and paste it directly into my URL bar. This is a minor inconvenience but it gets more complex.

This here is why I need it fixed. Say I'm in an application, StarCraft II for example. Something very interesting will show up in the news section and it says click to open in browser.. well guess what, I can't open it in my browser because of the problem. It simply does no... Read more

Unbeknown to most users, Mozilla added a privacy-enhancing feature to the Firefox browser over the summer that can help users block online advertisers from tracking them across the Internet.

The feature is named First-Party Isolation (FPI) and was silently added to the Firefox browser in August, with the release of Firefox 55.

What is First-Party Isolation

FPI works by separating cookies on a per-domain basis. This is important because most online advertisers drop a cookie on the user's computer for each site the user visits and the advertisers loads an ad.

With FPI enabled, the ad tracker won't be able to see all the cookies it dropped on that user's PC, but only the cookie created for the domain the user is currently viewing.

This will force the ad tracker to create a new user profile for each site the user visits and the advertiser won't be able to aggregate these cookies and the user's browsing history into one big fat profile.

Feature borrowed from the Tor Browser

This feature was first implemented in the Tor Browser, a privacy-focused fork of the Firefox browser managed by the Tor Project, where it is known as Cross-Origin Identifier Unlinkability.

FPI was added to Firefox as part of the Tor Uplift project, an initiative to bolster the Firefox codebase with some of the Tor Browser's unique privacy-focused features.

This is the third feature that has made it into the Firefox via the Tor Uplift project. Previously, Mozilla has added ... Read more

Answer:enable cookies in browser

Will if you have No Script installed you may have to give that site the rights to run the java script first and then make sure you let it set a a cookie.
Look in your cookie manager Exceptions and make sure your not blocking the site but allow the site to set a cookie.
If the site is not listed then add it at the top and and click the allow button.

Hi I am trying to get Google Now to show in my browser
So I can view the cards I have set up on my Android phone
I couldn't find the answer on Google for my Chrome Browser
It just kept saying in Windows 7 click on the bell in the right hand bottom of the browser
Looked in Chrome and I don't have anything across the bottom (Not even a status bar which I really would like to know how to set up)

I finally found the Bell in the bottom right in IE!!!
What's that all about? Shouldn't it be in Google Chrome?
Its not showing anything yet

Answer:Enable Google Now in my Browser

Hi,
Seems it should be if your signed into Chrome :/
But then again the instructions could be for users of the Google toolbar and not for Chrome users,
Chrome might have a extension to download or activate in the settings ?
I don't use Chrome so it's impossible for me to know
Cheers.

I am also using Opera v11.11 as my Browser and Windows 7 Ultimate as my OS. I know there is a later version of Opera out but I haven't tried it.

Question: .lnk extentions

I recently finished assembling my third PC, a mid tower desktop, and I'm having this annoying problem.
It's not a major problem but still annoying.
All of the shortcuts on my desktop and in the start menu have a .lnk extension. I've tried renaming the shortcuts without the .lnk extension but then the shortcuts don't work.
I tried numerous tweaking utilities including Tweak UI, Xsetup, Fresh UI among others but can't seem to find the solution. I even tried MS's own Help system...ha.

Hello everyone!

I have a question that I am not sure where it belongs. I tried to find documents on my computer that I saved, but the file names that they are saved under do not show what I was expecting. There is a photo, a header of some sort and a css file. When I tried to open the document I got a message that Windows was unable to open the file because the required program was not installed on my computer. I want to be able to open the css file to see if that is the document that I saved. What program do I need to open the css file extension?

Answer:css file extentions

css (cascading style sheets), used in conjunction with Html docs.

(What form does the header take, is it an htm/html file.
You would normally have an html file containing a link to the stylesheet, (.css file) and you would open the html file in your browser).

You can certainly open css files in Notepad, or other text editor and your browser, (or in web development applications).

My HTML knowledge is limited, bordering on novice level, but basically:

css defines how HTML elements are to be displayed.

Styles are normally saved in external .css files. External style sheets allow you to change the appearance and layout of pages on a Web site, by editing one file.

Ever since I upgraded to 64 bit Windows 7, I have noticed, and it has been suggested, that many programs simply do not install there shell extensions correctly. This is apparently the fault of Microsoft, as they did something different in the 64 bit, that prevents applications written for 32 bit to correctly install shell extensions. Well, after fighting with this for some time, and giving up for a while, I decided to try a different tech support forum.
Although no one enjoys a microsoft bashing as much as I do, thats not why I am here. I was wondering, there has to be a way, to install them manually. I just don't know how. I am quite confortable with the regestry editor, I just don't know what to edit, and exactly how to do it. Most of the programs are simple to run from the command line (<program name> <arguments[usally file name{s}]>) its just how to get those into the shell under windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

I'm really not sure that's the correct name or where to post my question so please excuse my stupidity. Here's my question: I would like to download Foxit Reader but have no idea which link to click on because I don't know what they mean. The choices are: .exe or .zip or .msi. I just want to be able to read a PDF file.

Thank you.

Answer:Download extentions?

The easy way is to go to http://www.filehippo.com/download_foxit/ then, on the right hand side of the page, click on "download latest version"..........no confusing options to worry about and the correct installer will download.Save that to your desktop, then install as normal.Filehippo is clean and free of malware.

[I have recently downloaded and edited a number of C.D. covers without any problems, however I've now run into a problem I fine puzzleing, yesterday morning I spent editing the covers in "CorelDraw" first in " Photopaint to remove the text and enlarge the cover to fit a jewel case then back into "CorelDraw # 7" to re-install the text and change things around a little .At noon I took a lunch break ( I left the computer running ) on my return as soon as I clicked on a C.D. to edit I was booted to the desktop, I opened the file where I had placed the " Ready for Printing" covers only to be faced with the same hangup, this morning I tackled the problem again only this time I noticed that the extentions had changed to cdr from jpeg how or why they changed I don't know.I do know that I'm looking at a page of unedited C.D. covers and an error message that states " Cannot find Page " clicking on any one of them boots me back to the desktop. My question is Can anyone suggest how to change the cdr back to a jpeg????? so I can re-activate them. Thanks Igopogo432.

Question: file extentions

does anyone know what the extension .SFV is on a file? i have a rom pack i downloaded for mame ending in that and i have no clue what it is.

Answer:file extentions

SFV stands for Simple File Verification.    Some of the downloaded files in the Net come bundled with a file that has an extension of .sfv -- this file is simply a verification file for the downloaded file itself.    SFV is basically a mathematical short checksum number based on the original file. When user downloads the original file and the .sfv file, user can use dedicated SFV check programs that use the SFV data to check the status of the downloaded file. If the SFV's checksum data doesn't match to the data that the validation program gets from the downloaded file, it typically means that the downloaded file is not complete or that the downloaded file has been corrupted during the transfer and needs to be downloaded again.

Hi all,
All of my application extentions will not show.
I have done a search in regedit for "NeverShowExt" and removed them all.
I have also done the following.

Open the Windows Start menu
Select "Settings -> Control Panel" to open the control panel
From the "Tools" menu, select "Folder options"
Click on the "View" tab
Under "Hidden files and folders", insure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
Insure "Hide file extensions for known file types" is unchecked
Insure "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. Note, Windows 2000 will display a dialog asking for confirmation. Be sure to read and understand the information contained in the dialog and then click on "Yes".
Click "OK" to complete the changes
It showed once but then just stoped. I have run virus check a few times with deep scans and found nothing.

Any ideas.
I am on a windows 2003 enterprise edition.

I can post a hijackfile if anyone needs it.

I hope someone could help. I am trying to open an .FSP file (1.fsp), but when i click on it Mic.Word opens, then a box pops up (titles "File Conversion- 1.fsp")that says "select the encoding that makes your document readable. Text encoding: (option1) Windows (default), (2)MS-DOS, (3) other encoding... with a bunch of hieroglyphic-looking symbols at the bottom. If I click OK (to use Windows default option), the Mic.Word page shows a paragraph of the symbols. Actually I've had a lot of situations where I get nothing but hieroglyphic symbols, like when try to download course documents from my online university Black Board site. What should I do to be able to open these two types of file extention problems?
Also, I have a LOT of files on my computer, in which when I try to open them, a box pops up that says something like "Can not find program to fun file extention" and gives me two options (1) search web for program (2) brows computer. Is there and program online that I can download that can help me open some of these odd-type file types?
I've been reviewing registrey cleaners, and at data recovery programs, like ParetoLogic's DriverCure and DataRecovery programs. Do you think software like these would help? Any recomendations?
Thanks for your time.

Answer:Opening File Extentions?

Welcome to TSG, rosie426.

I would suggest not bothering with any registry cleaners. Yeah they might help out sometimes, but for the most part seem to do more harm than good. If you search the topic on this site, you will find many posts about them causing issues.

There are a few programs that use .FSP as an extension. In your case since its "1.fsp", then the file was probably made(separated) with Fsplit. In other words the file 1.fsp isn't the complete or whole file. There are probably more parts. The utility generates a small Batch (.BAT) file with the splits. Just place all split files along with .BAT file in one folder and double click on batch file to reassemble the "parts" into a complete file. Then you will probably be able to open it with MsWord.

What CPU do you have as well as what Windows version your using?

SSEs are instruction sets supported via the CPU, so also check that you have installed your Chipset driver for motherboard, but this SMID is CPU hardware based, so cheipset should not really change this, but may possibly allow your intruction set to be picked up.

I have a computer with a bunch files of the old MS file extentions; both .WPS and .XLR; The computer was recently reformatted so obviously all programs were lost and the customer does not have any of the installation media for MS works.

I installed OpenOffice but noticed that they still can't be read or opened.

I stumbled on the website Zamzar, which would work fine I'm sure but you can only do them one at a time and I have close to 200 files.

I also downloaded some MS Office Converter pack but after installation, I didn't see any program I could run and am unsure how to use the tool.

any help is greatly appriciated, thanks.

Hello,
Not sure about the XLR extension but LibreOffice 3.3 has an import filter for WPS files.

I have dowloaded Serif PhotoPlus 6 and altered a couple of photos. The problem I am having is that every time I "save as", the only options it gives me for file types is .spp or .all files. Even if I choose .all files, it still saves the pic as a .spp. Therefor when I go to open it, it will only open with Serif. This causes a problem cause I can send the pics to anyone else cause then they would not be able to view them.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this? Should I use a different photo editing software? Or is there a way I can simply change the file extention to .jpg or something like that?

Any help would be appreciated.

There is two extentions in chrome, that won't delete. They are called 'PProoShopper 4.87' and 'DocToConvereter 1.3.' And yes, that is exactly how they are spelled. I cannot delete the doctoconvereter and the pprooshopper just keeps coming back once the computer is restarted. I could not find either of them in the registry. I googled both of them and there seems to be absolutely nothing on them. They are causing popups to popup every time anything is clicked on. I ran malwarebytes and it deleted 385 PUP's, but they were still there. I ran malwarebytes again and it found nothing. Both of the times I ran malwerebytes was in safe mode. I am thinking they are worms or rootkits. Has anyone ever heard of these two extentions or know how to get rid of them? (I have a very high computer experience level)

As far as i understand what your saying... This is normal. It is just a warning to tell you that the file might become unusable (Which it might). Why are you trying to change these? And what are you trying to change them to?

Have you recently upgraded to XP? When ever you try to change a file extension in XP, it will always show you that warning, which is legit.

Hi ;

I'm using Gooogle Chrome as my default browser. How can I make a back-up of my Google Chrome and SWareIron browser and save it so when I happen to uninstall it and re-install it again it will have my settings, theme, add-on/extension upon the re-install.

Is there a way for it to be done?

Also, I hae made back-ups of Google Chrome Themes in a seperate folder but when I re-install Chrome and I launch the crx file by "Right-clicking the crx file>Open with Google Chrome" nothing happens. I remember I did the same before but now I'd have to download it all again whenever I re-install Googlr Chrome.

On SWareIron, will it be the same case when I back it up? How can I do that?

With Firefox you can just do that and update it afterwards.

Help/teach me a thing or two on how can I do this one.

Thank you very much!

This will keep most malware from disguising itself as something else
which then tricks you into executing it

Unless your in the habit of clicking any old file,
an .exe extension would likely give you pause,
especially if your not so sure of the source, but what if it was just a .txt file?
thats safe isnt it?
NO, well not till you do the following

Unhiding Part 1
Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View Tab
Check Show Hidden Files and Folders
Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck Hide protected operating system files

while Im here I also
Check Display full path in the address bar
Check Display full path in title bar
(personal preference but a useful navigational aid)
HotTweaks.txt could actually be a dual extention HotTweaks.txt.exe
same goes for .mpg, .avi, ect, and could disguise .exe, .vbs or other real file extentions
that is till you do the above, however there are still some files that are hidden by default .shs, .shb, .pif files for instance and these are potentially dangerous

Hello everybody!

Answer:Problem W/ Desk Top Icons, And Strange Extentions

Hello MEvictim and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any problems in the log that would be causing the issue described. It is clean. What I would suggest is restoring the system to a point prior to when the problem started occuring. To run system restore follow the information here: How to run System Restore in Windows MEOnce that is complete, reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.OT

I need to do a search on a Toshiba Netbook using Vista for video files that were captured by a web cam.

I'm not certain if the files were edited so I'm hoping that someone can provide me with a list of files extensions that I should search for.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Solved: video captured by a web cam - what file extentions are used?

I found out that I could type "kind:videos" in the search field and (hopefully) find all videos that are stored on that computer.

I've used this forum for a long time. And it's saved my rear more that a few times. Thanks to all that take the time to answer all of the questions ... large and small.

Hi, i am trying to force .psd extension to be opened by photoshop.

Here is the problem, on my new HP system my C drive is only for windows 7 OS, no personal installs just OS, the C drive has very limed space.

I use my E drive for everything other than OS as it has all the space i need.

So i tried to set .psd files to photoshop thru both registry and also thru control panel. It does not even show me the option for photoshop and when i use browse to select it, it just ignores me.

When i tried to mod the registry, i could not change the user choice parameter, cannot edit it or change it at all.

Photoshop cs3 is on my system, i copied it over from my old computer and photoshop is working fine, it does not show in programs but it does work.

Any ideas how i can force .psd ext to be opened by photoshop in its current location?

And if not how do i take it off paint, i cannot seem to get it off paint default no matter what i do?

Thanks.

Answer:Photoshop not an option in program defaults for .psd extentions

Well er, reinstalling it would be the best way to fix that and who knows how many other subtle problems you may have from just copying over the program folder. You should deactivate it on the old computer first or you may not be able to reactivate on the new mahcine (Or needlessly use up one of your two allowed activations).

But to associate a file with any program, right click a .psd file, "Open with" "Choose default program", on that page make sure "Always use the selected program..." is checked, then click "Browse". Then search for the photoshop.exe on your photoshop install folder and select it.

Hello guys;

How can I make a back-up of my Google Chrome and SWareIron browser and save it so when I happen to uninstall it and re-install it again it will have my settings, theme, add-on/extension upon the re-install.

Is there a way for it to be done?

Also, I have made back-ups of Google Chrome Themes in a separate folder but when I re-install Chrome and I launch the crx file by "Right-clicking the crx file>Open with Google Chrome" nothing happens. I remember I did the same before but now I'd have to download it all again whenever I re-install Google Chrome.

On SWareIron, will it be the same case when I back it up? How can I do that?

With Firefox you can just do that and update it afterward.

Help/teach me a thing or two on how can I do this one.

Thanks!

Hello ehsan_shafaghat and welcome to Bleeping Computer
Unfortunately at this time there is no way to retrieve the private key that can be used to decrypt your files without paying the ransom on the CTB Locker Site.
Please read this for more information.

Having trouble linking two files with .xlsm extensions, can only link by having both files open at once which is inconvenient when linking lots of different cells that I normally just use find and replace function.  Used to work very easy when files were 2003 .xls files.  Excel closes down when ever I try to drag the link address.  If I link the cells directly, when I remove the $ signs from the cell name I get an error message #ref!.  Strange  ...  I have been linking files for years, only difference is changing files to new format .xlxm.

Answer:MS Excel - Trouble Linking files with .xlsm extentions

I may not be the best one to answer your question since I've never used Excel 2007.But since nobody else has replied, here goes. Can you save the files as .xls?  The "m" stands for macros, but macros have been around since the earliest Excel release.  I've also read that .xlsm files are compressed, or zipped, and I bet that is part of the problem you are having in trying to link two spreadsheets.  In Excel 2003 it was pretty easy.

Answer:Accidently changed file extentions to PDF how to change back?

If you look at the file extension I doubt it actually changed the extensions. Instead you have an issue with the program that supports the files be associated with Adobe or some other PDF handler. If you right-click on the file can you tell it to open it with the other program of choice and then select the check box to always handle those file types with the program of choice?

I was wondering if there is some free software that will enable the SMART monitoring on my hard drive. My Bios doesn't allow it to be enabled.

Answer:Software to enable S.M.A.R.T on hard drive when Bios doesn't Enable it?

SpeedFan gives some S.M.A.R.T info.  This is not SpeedFan's main purpose but it does provide some hard drive info.

Hello,

Could anyone tell me the advantages and disadvantages of disabling cache writing on the priming HDD? Thanks in advance

Answer:Cache Writing - Enable or not to enable?

I think the default setting is usually to enable it?

I have a dim understand of it from memory. As I recall, enabling it provides slightly faster performance but has a slight risk of data corruption in cases of a bad shutdown--like from a power outage. It can also have consequences when using RAID.

The geekiest thing to do is to enable it, but use a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to eliminate the risk from power failure.

Me? I've always left it enabled and haven't knowingly suffered any negative consequences.

I've recently installed a wireless lan in my office. I have Roadrunner cable coming into their router which in turn is attached to a Linksys router. I have one desktop (Dell) running XP Pro hardwire to the router. I also have a laptop and another desktop connected via wireless. I've seen all over the place that you should not enable file sharing. So, how do you allow acces from one computer to another. I've set them all up on the same workgroup.....what am I missing? I've been able to send print from the wireless laptop to the printer attached to the wireless desktop. It's just the folders I'm having problems accessing.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:To enable or not to enable (file sharing that is)

Where exactly have "I've seen all over the place that you should not enable file sharing".

If you don't that is fine. But then you can't share files. Just a choice to make.

With a router you should be reasonably protected.

I noticed in the past few weeks that my browser gets redirected a few times a day when I enter a url or click on a link. It's usually some bogus "anti-spyware" site. I was recently infected by some virus that looked on the surface to be an anti-spyware program. I think I got rid of it all, but I am still having problems with IE getting redirected. I just ran Malwarebytes anti-malware and all showed up clean. I also use AVG and that didnt show anything. Here is my HJ this log.

I changed windows to be a Standard PC trying to fix a problem with my sound. Now my APM is disabled and when I press the power button the system cuts power instead of properly shutting down windows. I think I want APIC re-installed as opposed to Standard PC. I have it enabled in BIOS, but how do I actually change it in Windows?

Answer:how to I re-enable APIC, OR enable APM?

IIRC, you'll need to re-install Windows if APIC wasn't originally enabled when the OS was being installed.
