Phenom II X6 1090T | Post State LED: CPU_LED red

Question: Phenom II X6 1090T | Post State LED: CPU_LED red

Hi everyone,
I really hope that the problem I'm about to share is bound with the PSU, but I'd like to read your opinions. Basically, my PC turned off suddenly, while it was running a game - I checked the LEDs on the motherboard and the "CPU_LED" was red, then I tried to reboot it, but the same led was still on. I started to think on the possible solutions so I left the PC there for almost 5 hours with the power supply disconnected.
When I came back to try, the led was not red anymore but, after like 45 seconds, the machine turned off again with the same red led on the "CPU_LED". Since I couldn't use my PC I took the opportunity to refresh the thermal paste on the CPU and clean the inside from the dust.
Now, I just tried to turn it on, and again, I could start the PC, and enter the BIOS, just to check temperatures and so on (My AMD Phenom II X6 1090T was running at 34 degree C, so nothing wrong here) but after like one minute, the PC went off with the same "CPU_LED" on.

Tomorrow I'll try to replace the PSU and see how it goes, but what're your thoughts ?

Many thanks,
/lwrand.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. The first thing that came to mind as I read is the issue is with the power supply. How old is it, ,make and model, and did it come standard with the case?

See this thread for a possible explanation:

Crosshair IV Formula Red CPU LED on on motherboard stays lite and system wont post.

Do you have another CPU that you can try out? Also, do you have eight wires plugged in to the CPU 12V header, not four?

Which one of these is better? I might be overclocking and there is a price difference of about 30 euros. So which should I consider to buy?

Thanks in advance

Answer:AMD Phenom II X6 1090T vs. AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black

They are very close in performance, some reviews indicate that the 1100T is a slightly better overclocker. The price difference in the U.S. is only $10, not sure there's 30 euros worth of difference though.

I made a thread a while ago, and I went on holiday (vacation) for a week and that's why I've started a new thread. Though I also want to know if I should RMA the CPU or if there are more things to try.
I've tried clearing CMOS and taking out the battery many times, and no matter what I did, the motherboard wouldn't POST. When I put my Athlon back in, my motherboard did POST and everything went on as normal (Accept the system time changed).
So, this thread is quite simple; Would you say the product I ordered is defective?
Thanks

Answer:Phenom II 1090T about to be sent for RMA

Hi there
1) the fact that the Athlon worked (and still works) shows there isn't a problem per se with the MOBO.

2) with the new CPU there are IMO two main options :

a) MOBO is incompatable with the CPU you ordered -- check the documentation to see if there are any switches that need setting. These days everything is usually done in Software -- but ensure that cpu is properly connected including Fan etc etc.

b) Cpu is defective -- I think this is likely to be the case --although IMO the fact of being shipped a defective CPU sounds really unlikely. You might have damaged it when replacing the old cpu by bending (accidentally) a pin -- but this is surprisingly hard to do with modern cpu's.

So my bet is that you've just become a very unlucky statistic. Return the CPU for replacement.

Cheers

Answer:Phenom 1090T best cooling?

depends on how much you're looking to overclock, because there are some really good air coolers out there. you could also just try using a better thermal compound like TX-3 or the OCZ stuff. have you been monitoring temps or do you just think that the heat is what's causing the computer to crash? again, it sort of depends on the hardware and how much you're looking to push it.

I have a Phenom II 710 in my PC which has only 3 cores (couldn't unlock a 4th) and is running at stock speed (I'm not much of an overclocker and my limited attempts failed to gain any significant speed). The PC has an AM2+ motherboard (Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4).

Recently I encountered some cases where the 710 was just too little for me. I'm working from home and was running simulations which are single core but sometimes I ran more than one at a time. I got to where my PC slowed down (all cores were at 100%), and I could also use a faster single core speed so they finish faster. While my usage has changed somewhat in recent weeks (more remote work instead of local), I still think it's worth getting an upgrade.

I was hoping that the Phenom II X6 1090T will drop in price once Bulldozer appears, but since that got postponed, and I have someone to bring me the CPU from the US if I order right now, I thought it might be a good opportunity (especially since my birthday is coming up next month). $180 is a little more than I hoped to pay, but not really that bad.

Still, I'd like to get some opinions about this.

The benefits I see:

- Compatible with my current PC, no need to upgrade anything else, saving money and time.
- Double the cores, which is good for when I need that.
- Higher core speed: 3.2GHz (3.6GHz with turbo) vs. 2.6GHz.
- Black Edition, so easy to overclock if I want it.
- Will cost less than the 710 cost me two years ago if I bu... Read more

Answer:Upgrade stock Phenom II 710 to 1090T?

It is hard to argue with any of your points there, however the performance increase will be profound from the x3 710 to the x6 1090. You can save about $30 (US) and get the 1055T to accomplish the same thing. The Thubans are all the same CPU (unlocked multi excluded)
The Thubans OC easily, and the 1055,1075,1090,1100, will all OC to between 4.0-4.3 Ghz with little effort, and for multi-threaded applications it is very fast. I am running an 1090T @ 4.26Ghz for Video editing,3DSMax,Photoshop CS5, and other adobe applicatiuons and am very pleased with it. Contrary to poplular belief, there are a number of games now that make use of 4+ cores as well.
Here are some numbers to look at.

Answer:Overclocking Phenom IIx6 1090T

Use the ASUS AI Suite. Also make sure you have an adequate power supply and cooling. Main thing is to take things slowly, this isn't a horse race. Both my machines are OC'd by about %30 or more but I have quality components to support that.

BTW, don't ever plug someone else's numbers into your OC, you could kill the machine reaal quick!

Hi I have a AMD phenom II x6 1090t, with a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 cooler and the thermal compound is applied properly. I also have 5 chassis fans.

On idle I normally have temps of 30-38 and when I'm gaming (GTA IV, LFD, COD MW2, BLACK OPS etc) I only hit 50, but when I was playing GTA IV, I finished playing and checked my temps and core temp said I hit 112 Celsius, however I didn't hear the computer get noisy or anything. I was wondering if this is legit or just a false temp because I've heard a few bad things about core temp.

When I use prime95 and other tools I only hit like 50 D:

any help or advice would help me a great deal

Answer:AMD phenom II x6 1090t high temps

It's not uncommon for third party monitoring software to not recognize current hardware. Does the board come with monitoring software? If so, what temps does it report? You can try HWMonitor, they're usually pretty good about being up to date: CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Keep in mind, it's never a good idea to run more than 1 temp monitor at a time. It could cause system instability.

Hello, I've been in the IT business for quite a while, but while i fix everyone elses' new computers I am notoriously cheap and have not bought a new system myself in over five years. Deciding it is about time now I have been doing some research and am currently looking at getting a:

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T black edition at ~$260
and a ASUS Crosshair IV Formula AM3 AMD 890FX at ~$170

Is this processor overkill? would it be better to get an earlier model for a bit cheaper? I'm just talking about from a functional efficiency standpoint, not for any specific usage necessities, I'm not the most hardcore gamer but I would like not to have to lower game settings for a few years.

As I understand it this is a good combo for overclocking, though I don't intend to go too high on the clock speed. Is this still a good setup or have there been better combos that have come out at a reasonable price?

Would it hurt to go for a cheaper mobo? I see that there is a combo deal with this processor with the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890GX on newegg, and the MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX is a bit cheaper as well. Is the Crosshair worth the added cost?

Any suggestions before I buy this set would be appreciated, even other hardware suggestions to go with it, video card or memory setups, or a good psu choice.
Thanks.

Answer:Phenom II X6 1090T and motherboard choices - comments?

Hi sethbest,
If you want a little perspective from someone who owns that combo, here ya go. The 1055t is the best price/performance of the X6 lineup. They are the same CPU's just with different factory clocks. they all OC to the same frequency (4.0-4.2Ghz) I purchased the 1055T because I just don't like to pay for someone else to do the OC'ing. The Formula IV is purely an OC board with all of the bells and whistles. it will completely take the fun out of OC'ing if you want it to. It does however have USB 3.0 support, and 42 PCIE lanes if you require that, or are planning on running a multi GPU setup. It is a stellar board both in features and build quality, and you will get the maximum OC out of whatever CPU you drop in there. For me , the Formula IV was worth the $$$, But I run 3x GPU and OC the hell out of everything, so that's a call for you to make. if you are not going to be heavily OC'ing, you can save some money and go with the MB (or similar)I linked to below.
As far as the X6 being 'overkill', there are apps that use the cores. the only game I know of that will use that many is bad company 2, it will use as many cores as you have. I think that will change with the next round of games however. And before Captian Cranky come in here and calls me out...I mostly got an X6 because I just wanted one ( is that better Cap? if you want to know anything else about the X6 or the IV, just holler.

this model is the full size PC 6005-T and i'd love to put my amd ahtlon x6 1090t in it. i know there could be an issue if it doesn't FIT because of 938 vs 939 pins so i'd be careful to see that it does, and maybe a wattage issue of 95w(?) but i'm wondering if anyone could tell me if an x6 can work since so many x4s do. it's the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition (3.2GHz) which uses 104 vs 92 watts idle(?) according to some site. apparently it's 125 watt TDP. thank you.

Hello!
I recently bought a seller refurbished Dell studio XPS 7100, with the 1045T processor and a Radeon RX 470 graphics card for med level gaming. I wasn't to upgrade to a 1090T. I believe that the graphics card is being bottlenecked, and would just generally try to get as much out of this computer as I can. The Passmark benchmark score for the 1090 is about 20% better, and has a significantly higher single core speed. Especially since the BIOS will not allow for overclocking, I would love to boost my processor speed and single core performance.
I am interested in upgrading the processor as much as possible, but upon research it looks like I will be restricted by the motherboard. Here is the info i have on my motherboard:
Dell Inc 0NWWY0
Chipset model 785G
Southbridge model SB700

The AMD Phenom xii 1045t is a 95w processor, and I am trying to see if my motherboard is compatible with a 125 processor (like the 1090t).
I have seen that some xps 7100 have the 1090t, but I cant tell if they have the same motherboard as me. All of my research on my motherboard has proved fruitless in getting a solid answer about whether it is compatible with 125w processors.
If anyone has any wisdom, or a place where I can find this information it would be much appreciated!

Thanks in Advance!

Hello. I've got my PC a few days ago, it was sent to me from Europe where I used it without any issues for ~2 years. So I built it up 3-4 days ago and it was working perfectly. I needed to move it, so I shut it down, unplugged it, moved it, plugged it back (to the same cord, same power cable), but it didn't start. To be more specific, it didn't get to the BIOS "phase". The motherboard lit up, fans were working, I heard HDD starting (no beep tho), but the motherboard was displaying Q Code 76, no post. After few restarts, I shut it down, unplugged and plugged back the EATX cable and it booted up without any issues! However, after several hours of working on the computer, I had to move it again (cuz of the recent "inspection"), so I shut it down, unplugged everything, plugged it back in (still the same cord&cable) and it happened again. But this time, reconnecting EATX cable didn't help. To be even more specific, the startup process looks like: Start -> Q Code 00 -> Q Code 14 & CPU_LED lights up (bright red) -> Q Code 76, no post. And that was it. After a few hours of trying and rebuilding it from a scratch, I somehow made it work again! I restarted it several times and it was working perfectly. So I was working on the computer for about 10 hours, then I went to lay down, I shut it down, but my curiosity got me and I tried starting it and boom, it happened again. The same issue. I tried: Reconnecting everything, CMOS clear... Read more

Answer:Processor picking, AMD Phenom 9600 VS AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition

Between the two, it is a no brainer. Get the 940. Next IMO you use an amd chipset board for an amd build and an intel chipset board for an intel build.

When you use third party chipset boards ie nvidia, sis, or via, you are asking for problems.
Nvidia makes fine video cards; their motherboard chipsets.... that is another matter.

I made my initial post in the General Discussion subforum, and I started it in hope that I would have more option the next day, and assess the situation from there. Brink did move it to this subforum, but I don't think he realised that I was just asking for pretty general information just to get my computer to pass POST, and then assess the BSoD issues, so my apologies if this is still considered double-posting, but I obviously didn't have the computer with the correct information to compose a BSoD thread.

I'd left the computer without power for ~5 days, removed 1 of my 2, 4GB DIMMs. It passes POST, ran System Repair without a System Restore and got Windows to run in a functional state. I've now just used Macrium Reflect to restore an OS System Image to a point prior to the issue, with the help of Wolfgang, and here we are.

I'm totally stumped.
I've upgraded from Win 7 to 10 twice and this happened both times. Basically on my Lenovo laptop I perform the upgrade and everything seems to work perfectly. After 1-2 hours of use, all of the files in the account I'm using seem to delete themselves in front of my eyes. I'm basically left with no valid user profiles and I can't even log into the system (once I log out) with any credentials because all user profiles are gone.
Essentially in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ProfileList, I'm left with the following 3:
S-1-5-18
S-1-5-19
S-1-5-20
(and nothing else)

At this point I try all the recovery options in windows 10, and they all fail.
I have to reboot with a previous Windows 7 rescue disk and system backup.

So even if I didn't mind that I'd lost all of my files, I can't even login once this weird event happens. Any ideas?

HI,

I've been posting on the Hijackthis Log forum. I think I have cleaned most of my system from malware and viruses, I've been using maybe 6 programs to remove all the junk(Clean up!, Spybot, Ewido). I've fixed the registry using Registry Fix 5.5 full version.

But my system *still* shuts down a minute after startup.

First of all, does Anyone know what could be the problem?

I've been reading that lsass.exe (the good one) is damaged and this might cause Windows to shut down. I also read about doing a boot up on the windows disk and repairing windows...

Will this 'Repair' fix the problem? ie, by replacing the lsass program. I'm using SP1 and Sp2 will doing a windows repair wipe these and other updates I've applied to the system?

Incidently, I booted from the Xp disk, and tried running the repair, I got the option to select C:\windows, I selected that and it restarted the system.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks

I would like some help from the forum if possible. I am trying to repair a HP P6320Y Tower PC. The onboard video will not post regardless of the following:
>CMOS battery removed 8 hours
>CMOS jumper and password reset
>POST test passes
>CPU fan and external fans functional
>Power supply 300v was under specs at 11.77DC, replaced with brand new power supply Diablotek DA 300 Series.
>Serial ATA to drive and DVD are functional
>USB plugged in to Mobo but is NOT functional on any USB port.
>Original Mobo is: M2N78-LA (part#573-400-01, Serial# A1MM06938)
>Purchased a replacement Mobo (used) on E-Bay M2N78-LA (Part#489363-01 Rev A01, Serial#86MM0V7158).
Regardless of all this the PC will not boot into Windows, no on-board video. I cannot use an external video card because it will not let me into BIOS to disable the on-board video.
These problems exist with the original and replacement Mobo.
Without spending $300 for a new original Mobo are there suggestions on what I should do? Please email me at <snip>. Thanks.

I'm a little confused by your problem, your computer has no video but you say it passes the POST test, how do you know if there's no video? Could you describe the original problem, what was the reason for the motherboard change?

Can you describe in a little more detail what happens when you press the power button, screen, hard drive light/activity.

Question: Amd 975 vs 1090t

The 970 runs at 3.5 Gigs and is a quad and the 1090T runs at 3.2 Gigs and has 6 cores but I don't think the extra 2 cores at worst having so which one would be the best one and why?

Answer:Amd 975 vs 1090t

It's all based on preference and budget. IMHO, AMD it the best bang for the buck. In benchmark test's Intel out performs AMD across the board. That might change with the new CPU AMD is going to release shortly.

Question: AMD 1090t Temps

Hi,

Can you let me know if the temps in the below picture look about right for the AMD 1090t CPU and the Gigabyte 890fxa-ud5 Motherboard?

I am using the Corsair H50 CPU Cooler.

Many thanks,

Answer:AMD 1090t Temps

Those are great temps!! I had a Phenom IIx4 955 that would idle around 28 to 32c depending on the ambient temp. But that was with a "quiet" air cooler!!

HWMonitor is pretty accurate but is there anywhere else to confirm those temps? Perhaps another monitoring tool or even within the BIOS?

Question: Overclocking 1090T

I am currently overclocking my X6 1090t from AMD. I got it to 3.8GHZ so far and am monitoring its temperatures. The AMD website says that the CPU temperatures should not go above 65 degrees Celsius.

So my question is, which one of these temperatures is the AMD website talking about? The 40 degrees Celsius, or the 54 degrees Celsius in this screenshot?

I've been dealing with this for a while now. Basically, when core #3 is turned on, my computer will run for a bit, then blue screen randomly. Usually pretty quick. I have been through many reinstalls, definitely not software. Tried cleaning, re-applying thermal paste. This is a 3 year old processor, and this has been going on for about 1 1/2 years. The only fix I have is in the bios, to turn the processor off. My mobo is the Asus m4a87td-usb 3, evga gtx 570 superclocked and so on. I've also noticed, I have never been able to overclock my processor or my graphics card even little without blue screening, if that helps. Even with the auto-tune. I have a case with plenty of large fans and air flow.

I am going to upgrade to a new processor soon and I was just wondering if my motherboard will run a Phenom II processor. It will run a Phenom processor and also Phenom FX, which hasn't even been released yet, so it seems like it would run most new AMD processors.

Here is the motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131340

Thanks.

Answer:Will a motherboard that will run Phenom also run Phenom II?

It most propably won't. You will at least need a BIOS update. Actually it will. :O
Go here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us search for your motherboard, choose WinXP (or any other, as it doesn't even matter), choose BIOS [BIOS history], choose the latest, 1001, BIOS, download. Then... I'm not sure, but you might need a floppy drive to update the BIOS, though some newer board can be done with a USB drive.

I've been looking at some CPU's to add to one of my aging computers and I cannot work out the difference between the CPU's, I can only see difference in the Clock speed. I havn't gone to far into checking it's exact specs but that's all I have seen. Is there any real difference?
Matt

Answer:Difference between AMD 1055T, 1090T and 1100T

All of those chips use the same core so yes the difference is clockspeed. Note if you intend to install one of these in an old system, the board must support the 6 core cpus. Just because it is an am3 socket board does not mean it supports all am3 cpus.

I built a new computer for a friend of mine and for some reason it's being really difficult. I used a MSI 790FX-GD70 socket AM3 motherboard and a six core AMD processor, the 1090t. I also installed 8GB of Corsair XMS3 DDR3 dual channel memory which is supposed to run at 1600mhz (8-8-8-24). my problem is that the board defaults the RAM at 1333mhz and slightly looser timings. This normally wouldn't be an issue but since I want him to be able to run the memory modules at full speed I am trying to adjust the BIOS accordingly; failing miserably. This board is designed for moderate OC, and supports the RAM, but for some reason it becomes unstable when tweaking. I suppose this could have something to do with an outdated BIOS and being coupled with an X6 processor, but the changes I'm trying to make really aren't that extravagant.

Firstly, I tried to set a ratio of [1:4] which would have the memory run @ 1600mhz, but the board didn't seem to like that too much and would not POST afterward. I read that the 1:4 ratio is problematic with some hardware combinations so I abandoned that right away. Next I tried raising the HTT/FSB to 250 in 10mhz increments, and adjusting the volts accordingly. This worked fine until I lowered the multiplier from [16] (200x16) to [13] (250x13) and setting the NB multi to [8]. This gave the CPU just a slight OC from stock speed and kept the NB where it was supposed to be. However, even though the memory was now @ 1666mhz and the ti... Read more

About three months ago I upgraded to this Motherboard (M4N98TD Evo) as my previous motherboard died (M4N72-E), The transition seemed to go very smoothly apart from the fact that I am still struggling for absolute stability.

I know what my old board was capable of running these components at and I know all the voltages. etc, that I used to obtain them, while understanding that this board is a different prospect, I was hoping as it was a model higher that I may have better results with it.

However after an 8 hour run of prime95 last night and thinking that I had cracked it, today while playing FSX for around two hours, I suddenly get a BSOD, I am also getting crashes while playing F1 2011 although these are black screen crashes and no BSOD reports.

Attached is the required dump files, any help appreciated.

Answer:Windows 7 64 Bit ASUS M4N98TD EVO AMD X6 1090T GTX 470 BSOD

No .dmp files included. If you are running CCleaner (I see it installed), please refrain from using it for the duration of your troubleshooting. It deletes the .dmp files during clean up processes.

I was able to check the Event Viewer logs, and I see three 0x116 Video TDR Error crashes and a 0x50 Page Fault in Nonpaged Area crash. This indicates possible memory issues and/or graphics card issues.

I see that you are running an AMD processor with overclocked RAM. AMD processors have a difficult time handling anything over 1333 MHz without some serious tweaking, so we advise against running them with RAM that runs at 1600 MHz or higher. 1744 MHz is definitely going to cause problems. I would recommend starting there. If you have XMP with the logo, it probably will not play well with AMD hardware.

That is about right for that setup/res. The good news is that the minimum frame rate should rarely be below 30 FPS. Maybe an odd and brief 25 FPS during 'From hell' and the like.

I just upgraded to the Phenom II X3 445. It's paired with a MSI 770t
I was a lucky and was able to unlock the 4th core. However, this CPU seems to run HOT!
With the stock fan it was idle 60c and hit 73c under load! The stock fan was 6000 rpm none stop. I realized I'd better purchase a better cooler and so I invested in a Katana III. The fan noise is much more pleasant and under load and temperatures now never exceed 60c but idling at 48c seems very warm to me.

The case (cooler master) is well ventilated and system temps rarely exceed 38c. Re-locking the 4th core has no effect on the CPU temp.

I'm not planning on overclocking and not bother by the 2500 rpm of Katana fan but I am worried the 60c is rather warm. Can I live with these temperatures and what is potential problem in this setup?

Question: Phenom X4 955 help

Hello, I have an Asus M4A78T-E mobo, and I had installed the cpu in the mobo with DDR3-1066 RAM. My problem is that I have double checked all the cables, made sure they are all plugged in, and even checked the heatsink and cpu over and over again. It posted ONCE, and then I went into the bios, changed the boot priority to boot to my primary hard drive, and then saved and exited. My problem happens after I have done this, no video, no post, theres nothing, absolutely nothing. Everything works, video card kicks on, fans spin, cd burner turns on, hard drives kick on, but no post or video. I have checked my RAM speed, and it says that the Phenom 2 x4 955 supports UP TO 1333, which I am guessing it supports lower speed RAM under 1333. I checked Asus and it says that the 955 is supported, but only after the 1001 update for the motherboard. I have come to conclude that it is either my RAM speed, the cpu itself, or I need to reset the CMOS and flash the bios to update and get support for my cpu. Any help on this topic would be appreciated, I really don't want to send it back to newegg for a refund. Please help.

Answer:Phenom X4 955 help

Reset the cmos. If that doesn't fix it, you'll have to check the hardware one at a time. All three of the main culprits can cause the MB to fail to post. To check memory, remove each stick one by one and try booting with each one missing. To test the graphics card, you can remove it and boot and the MB should boot to a POST fault code, two longs beeps iirc. The processor though will need a replacement to test, unfortunately.

Question: OC a Phenom X2 545

Its basically a crap idea, I know but then thats the crap I'm stuck with. This 2-core Phenom with the multiplier locked and a GA-M61PME-S2P which isn't OC friendly either .I managed to set FSB=223 and Multiplier=15 which gave a 3345 MHz . But the problem is sometimes (just once or twice out of ~25 attempts) would it start successfully, rest it would just enter BIOS SAFE MODE: SYSTEM DEFAULTS LOADED . What are the possible reasons for that?

Hi all

In a bit of a jam. I want to play EVE online again and the system i am currently using is a few years old. My question is what GPU should i get since the one currently used (Radeon HD5700 series) keep overheating so i have to have everything set to low.

my system is
Wind 10 64 bit
AMD Phenom II X4 965
motherboard - GA-MA790XT-UD4P
8 gig ram
3 hard drives
4 DVD drives

I do not know what PSU is in the unit as i have not ventured in it. But its a rather larger than normal case with a lot of extra bits added. The whole thing was passed onto me after a relative died so i have no real knowledge whats inside.

UK based so willing to spend 70. I know next to nothing about GPU's these days.Last time i had to research any was 20 years ago.

Thank you

Question: The new AMD Phenom

I was searching around and i stumbled across the AMD Phenom Quad-Core awesomeness.

I noticed it is shipping in the UK already for 166.66UK. Its not set for release here in the U.S. Until early 2008.

I was mainly wondering if i could acquire one from the UK would it like our AM2 Mobos?(in other words would our AM2 mobos run a Phenom, if it only runs up to a FX) Or should i not risk it and just wait until its released here.

I can get one before christmas because i have friends over there who would order it and ship it to me all i would do is repay them. So would it be worth it? Or should i get the CPU and a Mobo (that specifically says it runs the Phenom)from the UK too? Or i could just wait, but i really dont want too

EDIT*** Overclockersclub has 10+ in stock too

Answer:The new AMD Phenom

I've heard that it's performance compared to the intel is not worth it. I think its better to wait until they release the Phenom FX, which the review said around early next year.

I got a budget of $90 and a Phenom II x2 555 CPU (Did not unlocked ) that I can return for $105 credit, I have installed in my pc 2GB Ram (XP 32Bit) and I might install Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit or stay with XP32(if I don't purchase the extra ram). With the credit and budget I can either get a 3.2GhzQuad core alone and stay with xp or a 2.8GhzTri-core+2GB Ram Stick combo and upgrade to 7 64bit. What is the best choice for gaming? Important Note: Got an XFX Radeon HD 5770 installed on the rig but seems it needs a better processor or ram to make it to the fps shown in some reviews. I also check out GTA IV in the Can You Run It site and in recommended there is the phenom x3 2.4ghz so I guess the phenom II x3 2.8ghz is much better in that aspect.

First off, this shouldn't be in this section of the forum.

Second, the i7 wins hands down. The only time I've seen the Phenom win was when it was overclocked to 3.6ghz and the i7 was stock. But the point of the Phenom is the value. Me personally, I'd go with an i7, but to each their own. It's still a good processor.

I'm in the market for a new rig and was wondering if I should buy the phenom(9500)? I was looking at the Athlon 64 X2 6400. Is there much of a difference between the two?
Back in the day I used to be pretty confident in talking about pc's and building them but that was then. I'm still a little baffled as to what a quad core is. I mean, I know what the text book definition is and I know that it's better than a dual or single core. What I'm not sure about is the performance and such. My chip that I have right now is the amd athlon XP 2800. That sits at 2.08GHz. The X4 9500 is rated at 2.2GHz. My biggest puzzlement is, is the 9500 only .12GHz bigger or is it 2.2GHz x 4? You see what I'm getting at? I've never really seen it explained anywhere as to how this works.

I realize I'm bordering on being a retarded noob but I wont know unless I ask.

DDr3 1333MHz is the good enough. For anything better you need a good MB that can support it. I recommend some Kingston Hyperx 2X2GB modules (good for overclocking or tightening the timings) and it's not that expensive.

Personally, I prefer the Intel side of things because of their motherboard chipsets. I have a 2100 running a home server right now, and it's no slouch at all. Others may differ, but I don't think there's much to be had in gaming with a quad-core as opposed to a dual-core, and the Intel setup would allow you to drop in a much faster processor a year later or so, if you wanted to.

hi guys,

whats the fastest proc the amd or intel considering the amd is 3Ghz and the intel is 2.66Ghz, also when games come out and require a cpu thats 2.8Ghz will it be too fast for the intel one and ofcourse the amd will run it smoothly???

Answer:AMD Phenom II X4 940 vs Intel i7 920

Both will run it smoothly, but the Intel is definitely faster... because the Phenom II was never even set at competing with the Core i7... it was just meant to match/beat the Core 2 Quads and give AM2 users a good CPU upgrade path...

No, clock speeds don't matter, and that 2.8ghz would probably apply to a Pentium D.... (slowest dual-core, and a Core i7 would be like 1.2ghz would be as fast as a 2.8ghz Pentium D)

Hi everybody!

I'm getting myself a Phenom II X3 720 BE this coming week along with an AM3 motherboard. I intend to overclock, but after a few days. What CPU cooler would work with an AM3 socket? I have been reading in a few places that even without OCing the temps are pretty high with the stock cooling.

I live in India and my options would probably be limited to Cooler Master. However, I'd like to know what other brands I could consider.

Thanks.

Answer:CPU Cooler For Phenom II X3 720 BE

Check out www.frozencpu.com, they are based out of NY but I'm pretty sure they ship worldwide. They have a decent selection of socket AM3 coolers from Cooler Master to Zalman. Most are in stock.

Hello,

I recently made a small upgrade from an original phenom to a Phenom 2 BE 2.8ghz. I have an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard that allows me to change OC from there but I am unable to do so. I was able to upgrade my old phenom to 2.4ghz from 2.2 but now when I try any OC'ing with the new processor I do not even get a post. I even reset the bios defaults and chaning the frequency to 240 which would under clock it to 2.4 ghz. I just wanted to see what happened and I also did not even get a post. The only time it will boot is if everything is on default settings. Any ideas here? Thanks in Advance!

What do you think of the Phenom X2 565 @340Ghz? i love it folks, runs well stable.

Overclocked to 4000Ghz at idle, thanks to my Coolermaster Cooler and nifty 120mm fan on it, runs fine, all i need to do is test it under full load, i am going to be bottlenecked GPU wise considering i am running a Geforce 9400GT.

Question: which phenom black

hi folks
just after a little advice again. im gonna buy an AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition. i was originally gonna get the 965 3.4Ghz but im thinkin i may get the 955 3.2Ghz instead.
i mainly use my pc for gaming. (battlefield3 on the horizon) and burning, copying movies.
so my questions r. is there much difference in performance between the 2?
will the stock heatsink b ok? it looks it. or should i go for Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler?
this is the mobo im using Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H rev 3.1

thanks in advance for ur help folks

Answer:which phenom black

No, there won't be any noticeable difference between 3.2Ghz and 3.4 Ghz, but they are very close in price, so go with the 965 Black Edition. I have one and ran it to 4.0Ghz, but I don't play games.

Just checked Newegg and there is $21USD difference.

I'm posting more for opinions than anything else.

I have Phenom II X4 940 cpu plugged into Gigabyte ga-m720-us3 and I cool the cpu with a
Spire StarCore heatsink/fan. Thermal compound used is Halnziye HY710

The cpu specification is 55-62 degrees max. operation but my cpu can get as a high as 70.

As well as the cpu fan, I have an adjacent case fan to help draw air in and across the cpu -

Can anyone suggest how to run the cpu cooler?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a processor to replace my current Athlon X2 6000+. The latest BIOS update(5001) for my motherboard, an ASUS M2A-VM (non-HDMI), offers support for am3 CPUs.

Now I know that the am3 Phenom II X4 945 is supported as well as am2+ Phenom II processors, like the 920/940.

My question is: will the 955 work on my mobo? I've seen some tests in which the 955 works, but runs at 800mHz. However these were all done before the release of the 5001 BIOS, which is the first BIOS update that offers official support for am3 processors.

Thanks!

Answer:Phenom II on am2+ Mobo

Probably not as there isn't a single CPU in the supported list,

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards - M2A-VM

that is over 95W, and the 955 is a 125W CPU,

I'm trying to decide which PC to recommend for a client. I've already recommended a custom build, but they're fixated on HP-so I've come up with two models. One has a Q8300 (4MB L2, no L3, 1333MHz FSB) but an Intel 4500HD integrated graphics card. The other has a Phenom II X4 810 (2MB L2, 4MB L3, 2000MHz HTT bus) with a Radeon 4200 integrated graphics card. (The Intel says '32MB integrated shared memory' and the ADI says '256MB integrated shared memory'. I'm guessing that it's all shared and the amounts listed are minimums.) Client isn't a gamer but wants Windows 7 which I figure will require at least as good graphics as Vista, and I'm just not impressed by the 4500HD graphics performance in Vista. (Except that's in a totally different PC so I'm trying to ignore that.)

What do you think?

I recently acquired a Motherboard (M2N68-LA) with an extra CPU and after trying different searches, i'm having a problem finding out which would be better for me. First of all, I don't do ANY Gaming, at all. I watch alot of online videos and movies off my hard drive and occasionally a little video/audio editing with avs4you.Can anyone that understands CPU's tell me which one would be better for me? All comments are very appreciated.Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 with 4 GB DDR2 RamAMD Athlon Dual Core 7550 2.50 GHz or AMD Phenom 8400 Triple Core 2.10 GHz

Answer:AMD Athlon vs AMD Phenom

Lots of info out there on these. Each CPU benchmarkhttp://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Phenom+8400+Triple-Corehttp://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Athlon+7550+Dual-Core&id=99CPU comparisonhttp://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-Phenom-X3-8400-vs-AMD-Athlon-X2-7750They are close in performance. If you were looking to overclock the Athlon looks like its unlocked while the Phenom is locked. Also the Tripple core phenom is only 2.1Ghz while the Athlon makes up in performance for lacking a core in the faster 2.7Ghz clock. You could always try each one out and see which one you like best. There are situations where the Athlon would be better than the Phenom. Testing them out of probably your best bet. Maybe the difference will be unnoticeable. The Athlon looks like it could take an overclock to 3.22Ghz if you can keep it cool and run healthy timings without issues of bugs showing up with board or RAM tripping up on the cranked to 3.22Ghz clock of the Athlon with max overclock. The Phenom could also be overclocked, but because its a locked CPU, only method of overclock to 2.44Ghz would be by upping the FSB on the memory. I have had to overclock this way with a locked Athlon 64 x2 4450B from 2.3 Ghz to 2.53Ghz raising the FSB from 200 to 220Mhz with locked multiplier of 11.5 for a 10% overclock which adds to performance and I am able to stay cool on stock cooler ( cast aluminum heatsink and fan )

I bought a new Phenom II 955 Black Edition for my M2N-SLI deluxe. I installed it to find out the multiplier is stuck at 4x. This is a well known problem (that I didn't know about when I first got it ) and the solution is basically to use N-Tune to set the multiplier to 16-18 (BIOS changes don't work).

The problem I am encountering is that ntune won't let me change the multiplier. I tried to google search it, but all the answers I found are "you should be using the BIOS". Of course, that doesn't work for me in this situation. Any suggestions?

Hello all, after not being here on the forums in a few years, I find myself back again.

I'm building a new system (my 1st build though I've been planning it for years)

and had my heart set on the AMD Phenom II x4 965 black edition.

...well I decided my best bet is to buy all the compenents for the build, leaving video card, mobo, and cpu for the last in case I change my mind...

well, now I'm changing it.

I don't wanna blow a grand on the max i7. At most, I want to drop a max of 200-250 on the processor.

So should I stick with the x4?
Or is an i3, or i5 (maybe i7?) a strong competitor? (keep in mind I want this computer future proofed for at least the next 5 years or so, give or take a video card upgrade)

I don't know if I want to do the Intel/Nvidia build, or AMD Ati.

any help, and reasons to back up the statements is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Core iX or Phenom II x4?

If budget is a concern, you definitely get more processing power for the money using an AMD/ATI build.

However, spend more and you get more with Intel/Nvidia.

For the money you're talking about spending (i.e. around $200-$250 for the CPU), AMD will kick Intel's butt.

It would help to know what you're going to use the computer for (i.e. video editing/encoding, gaming, multimedia, just internet/desktop publishing, etc.).

Also, when getting a graphics card, stay away from "cheap" manufacturers... stick to something like EVGA, MSI, etc. You'll spend a little bit more, but it's worth the quality difference.

After about 45 minutes of tweaking I was able to overclock my CPU to boot successfully with these settings:

Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P Motherboard:
Clock Multiplier: x13 (max of x13)
CPU Core Speed: 3120Mhz
Bus Speed: 240Mhz
HT Link: 1920Mhz at x8 (max of x10)
Northbridge Frequency: 2160Mhz at x9 (max of x10)

OCZ Platinum 4GB Dual Channel PC2-8500 DDR2 1066
DRAM Frequency: 480Mhz
Memory Clock: Auto at x4 960Mhz (max of x5)
Max Bandwidth: PC2-6400 400Mhz
Timings: 5-5-5-15 with tRC of 25 I believe
Note: Why does my RAM say PC2-6400 in windows and the specs of the ram when I bought it are PC2-8500?

Computer Voltages:
DDR2 Voltage: +0.300v at 2.1V
Northbridge Voltage: +0.1V at 1.2V
Southrbridge Voltage: +0.1V at 1.3V
CPU Voltage: +0.075v from 1.325V to 1.4V
CPU NB VID: I don't know what this is so I set it to Normal.
Note: My motherboard BIOS says, "System Voltage NOT Optimized" on the tweaking screen. Does this mean I have just changed it or does it mean I have changed it and the changes are wrong?

Also I am not sure what my Ram Frequency to CPU Frequency Ratio is and I am not too good at that so can anyone help me out? Also any suggestions? thanks

I am totally confused here, so maybe you can tell me what is different here:

This one looks like the better deal since it is cheaper and comes with heatsink and fan. The only thing different from the next one is this is the "Black Edition" and gives L1 cache.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103249
Here is the other:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103280

This one also goes as low as 1.05V, but big deal right?
Is it better to not have L1 cache or somethin?

Crossfire motherboard. Wouldn't surprise me if it supports PCI-e 2, and I wouldn't get DDR3 anytime soon, its really expensive and doesn't offer much of a performance increase over DDR2.

Hey guys.

So I know I've previously had a lot of BSOD trouble but it seems my system is stable again. The purpose of this thread is that I'd like some help to start overclocking my CPU again. Get a little more out of it, y'know? The highest OC I've achieved on this CPU (stable) was 4.42GHz. The stock speed is 3.21GHz.

Current info from CPU-Z:
HWMonitor Info:

I'd like my CPU clocked from 3.21GHz to 3.8GHz. I don't really care much about Turbo Boost so that can be disabled. I just need some help with what to set. I've not OC'd for a long time so I'm a little rusty on what should be set to what.

Im looking to buy a phenom x2 550 black edition. Ive heard you can unlock the 4 cores. What boards that support multi GPUs will unlock the cores?

Answer:Need help with Phenom compatibility

Hi Link,
in order to unlock the disabled cores you need a motherboard with the 750 southbridge.the 750 SB gives you ACC ( Advanced clock calibration) to activate the disabled cores. don't get your hopes up too high though, most of the time the cores have been disabled for a reason, either they will not unlock at all, or they are damaged and will lead to system instability, or lower the overclock potential. I own three of these AMD cpu's and that has been the case with all of them. you could get lucky and get a 'good one' in that they took a healthy quad and simply relabeled because of demand for that price point, but it would be wise to assumes that when you purchase a X2 550, that is what you will get, anything else is a bonus.
