Simple to use anti-virus/spyware/malware/registry cleaner/firewall?

Question: Simple to use anti-virus/spyware/malware/registry cleaner/firewall?

Looking for a good piece of software that will keep viruses, worms, malware, and spyware off my desktop PC (which is running Windows 10 free upgrade) and comes with a registry cleaner, firewall, and is simple to use.

Relevance 100%
Preferred Solution: Simple to use anti-virus/spyware/malware/registry cleaner/firewall?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Simple to use anti-virus/spyware/malware/registry cleaner/firewall?

There are many programs around that fit the bill except, I would not look for and use a registry cleaner. They are not necessary!

Just did a clean install wanna start fresh with the usual programs to keep Computer stable , not sure how well have this years are the programs i used before doing nowadays so asking the community for recommendations i previously used:

Anti Malware = Spybot Search & Destroy (is it anti-malware or just anti spyware?)
Registry Cleaner = Ccleaner
Driver Finder = iObit Driver Booster 2
Defrag = Auslogisk Defrag

i like free versions that are capable , are this still the best ? any other utility ive missed to keep pc clean and stable?

pd: getting a partition for windows 8.1 pro will this programs work on that other OS as great as in 7 pro?

Answer:Which programs you recommend for : Anti-Malware , Registry Cleaner , D

Do your self and your compute a favor.
DON'T use a IOBit programs or you will be doing another Clean install.

IOBit programs do more damage to a system than they do good.

CCleaner is a good program. I use it often at the default settings except it does not start until I tell it to.
Like any program that messes with the registry you must have the proper knowledge and use it very carefully if at all.

I know very little about Spybot.
I use Malwarebytes Premium along with Microsoft Security Essentials.

My choice for anti spy ware I use Super Anti Spyware on demand (Free)

Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

https://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/lp4/...FUQ8gQodMGMAAg

SUPERAntiSpyware - AntiAdware. AntiSpyware. AntiMalware.

Hi,
I'm not too PC-literate, but the way I see it,my Win XP Home has its own firewall, and my free AVG 9 is anti-virus/anti-spyware, so I'm fully covered aren't I, or do I really need to install extra programs?

Answer:so I need another firewall and anti-virus/anti spyware progs?

No malware program is 100% effective. That's why it's a good idea to go with a layered protection strategy. In addition to your AVG anti-virus, it's a good idea to occasionally run 1, or 2, online scans.Don't install a second Anti-virus, as this could potentially cause problems, which may render both programs ineffective.Check out Post #1, of our Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps topic, for a list of some of the available online scanners. As far as malware is concerned, installing Malwarebytes' (mbam), and/or SUPERAntiSpyware, and running them as on-demand scanners, should pretty well cover your bases. As stated above, no program is 100% effective, and shouldn't be a substitution for safe surfing habits.

Greetings:I just had my computer formated again. The technician/friend who did the work told me that I needed a good anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware program. I told him that I previously had AVAST! (which was recommended on this Forum and which I liked immensely) but when he checked the AVAST! website, he pointed out to me that the free version only gives anti-virus protection but no firewall or anti-spyware protection. He especially feels that the firewall is essential security. Well, does anyone know where I can download for free a program that gives excellent anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware protection? BTW, I welcome your comments on what technician/friend said. Do you agree or disagree with what he said? Thank you in advance for any advice given.

Answer:Best, free anti-virus, firewall & anti-spyware????

This showed up when i started up my computer last night (I'm running XP). My desktop background changed to red with biohazard type logo, windows keep popping up trying to sell me protection, etc. when it first showed up some of my desktop icons dispeared and i couldn't get into my c drive, but that seems to have stopped for the moment.I've run my Kasperskys Antivirus, which says it can't delete it, disinfects it, but doesn't seem to change anything.I've also used System Mechanic 5, Spybot Search and Destroy, Smitfraudfix (i saw this suggested to someone else veiwing another forum- and it seems to work and everything looks good for 5 minutes, but then low and behold it comes right back) plus RegClean, RegistryFix, Tracks Eraser Pro, BugDoctor- to try and clean stuff out- some things seem to get rid of it, but then it returns. I've been looking it up on google to see what other people did, and trying these things, but obviously this strategy hasn't worked. its just given me a headache.I'm out of my depth. I don't know the Difference b/w Anti-Malware & Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware.

Is ESET a Anti-Malware.

How the Users are able to Know that this antivirus can be used as Companion with any av (like CIS + EAM)

Answer:What is Difference b/w Anti-Malware & Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware

long time ago, in ancient ages, where computer were barely able to reach 333Mghz , they were a distinction between Virus, malwares and spywares.

Virus is a specific term that includes items that modify your files then replicate itself and jump to another computer.

Spywares were mostly items that silently collect datas and transmit them to someone; they include cookies, trojans, adwares, monitoring tools, etc...

Malwares is a most generalist term that includes all forms of malicious items such as viruses, worms , trojans horses, rootkits, spywares, etc...

at that time security softwares were design to protect only some of these categories, for example , i had to use Avast (very basic at that time , with an interface that looks like a music player ^^) alongside Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware (both specialized against spywares)

now these terms are obsoletes since any antiviruses/malwares are similar by detecting and cleaning all of them.

How long could you last if you were a normal PC user without an active Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware or a Firewall before getting attacked by someone?

Answer:How long could you last without Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware or Firewall?

Too many variables involved to be able to give any sort of credible answer. Someone who has a well configured browser and very safe surfing habits, would probably last longer than someone who is heavily involved with social media and peer to peer applications. As one comparative example.

Hello! We have acquired the above mentioned malware and it has so far evaded my feeble attempts to eradicate it. A family member downloaded it while looking for a solution to a quest in a popular kid's online multi-player adventure game. So far, I have updated and scanned with Malwarebytes and the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, both results showed no malware presence. Microsoft's Live One-Care scanner detected Trojan:JS/Tracur.C and some issues with Java Script files, but I was unable to access the virus database for more information...system was unavailable. No action was taken on the results of the Microsoft scan. The symptoms of this infection are the fake alerts for firewall and browsers, the removal of my antivirus icon, browser redirects to fake browser alert pages, and the inability to access my antivirus program from the desktop. None of these symptoms occur when I log on as administrator or when I run XP in safe mode. I believe I have correctly followed the very detailed instructions set forth here at Bleeping Computer and have included the logs here. All scans were initiated while logged on as administrator, not sure if this is the correct procedure, though..DDS (Ver_11-03-05.01) - NTFSx86 Run by xxxxxxx at 9:42:23.64 on Mon 03/21/2011Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1022.443 [GMT -5:00].AV: avast! antivirus 4.8.1368 [VPS 110320-1] *Enabled/Updated* {7591DB91-41F0-48A3-B128-1A... Hello,

I have a problem that is far beyond my limited skills. One of our people has a laptop that has either malware or a virus infecting it. Two symptoms are present: first, when using firefox web pages get redirected to advertising or to unrelated google searches; second, the machine seems more sluggish than usual.

I have tried to download anti-spyware software (e.g. Spy Sweeper, CounterSpy, MalwareBytes, Superantispyware, PC Doctor) and nothing works. In some cases such as Counterspy and PC Doctor, the executable will run but the program will not update (and thus, not allow for a scan). In other cases such as MalwareBytes, the executable simply will not run.

I have run a Trend Micro anti-virus scan. It seems to detect something but it crashes before the scan can complete. The same thing happens with Panda Activescan. Last night, I ran Panda Activescan for over 8 hours. When I woke up, the scan had frozen at the 52% point and had found 1 infected file, which it didn't appear to clean up.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any help.
Best regards,
Jordan

Answer:anti-virus,firewall, spyware etc.

Short answer is NO!

MS will probably never delve into the AV market, though you never know, but with their latest acquisition of "Giant" anti-spyware program & MS's own Firewall you?re not short of some good protection.

Giant anti-spyware has a good reputation of being one of the best, it was never Free and because of that was shunned. I have personally tried it out and highly recommended it ... however, as MS have now acquired it; it is now being re-released as a BETA version as a direct download from MS.

You will find discussions here at PCR, just do a search.

Okay, so I just recently uninstalled Spycatcher Express due to the fact that it sucked. Since the update, there are less features in the free version and it just ruined my computer environment. If you had spycatcher, you would know what I mean.

Anyways, Auslogics is known to not work properly because it is built off some "free" program. I read a review on a site and they said it did not completely defrag your system. That is the reason it went so fast.
Recuva, a free tool from Piriform defragmented my system and my system memory went from 14GB of usage to 8-9GB of usage. That was the disk defragmenter.
Now I'm left with Auslogics registry defragmenter which I'm sure is the same as the Disk Defragmenter so I'm wondering which registry defragmenting software would be better?

Also, spycatcher failed me and I'm looking for a new anti-spyware. I have spybot, but professionals have told me to use it as a secondary anti-spyware.

I'm using Avast! Home Edition as my anti-virus so I'm sure that's the best as of right now for free software. Although I may be wrong, I'm open for suggestions .

Okay, PLEASE NOTE that I am looking for FREE software.

Thanks!

First of all i would like to apologize if this topic is in wrong category, or it should not even be asked on this site. And second of all, please be patience i'm a noob looking for answers So whats all about? Well i'm meeting new terms here and i have no idea what they mean and what they do. And as anyone else i wanna be safe in this era of cyber-crime. So basically i know whats a anti-virus and a anti-spyware and that they can run together. Also i heard that 2 anti-virus don't do good but 2 anti-spyware do. So what i'm asking is, what is a anti-malware? Can a anti-malware, anti-virus, and anti-spyware run together? Could you suggest some good+free of those 3? Sorry for my bad English and being such a noob

Answer:Anti-malware, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware

Florin, you might take interest in this thread, though it may be quite a bit of reading: What's the Best Anti-virus?

It is there that they discuss all kinds of different antiviruses and coupled security software. I personally only use Microsoft Security Essentials, but I have used it along with Malwarebytes for added security in the past.

Basically, you could have your system completely locked down with lots of extra security, but in some cases it becomes a hassle because of how much your computer becomes protected and overly secured. If you prefer a speedy computer over security, generally you use less security software, but if it is the other way around, you will want beefier security software which may slow things down slightly. That link I've provided will have most everything you will need.

Now I have my broadband I have become a bit more aware of security. Is Zone Alarm the best free Firewall? I would also like a program that detects and removes ad/spyware, although surely the firewall would block this. I decided to format my pc as on my process bar on XP there were alot of things which I didn't think should be there and my zone alarm was blocking a program called aserv2 which was using multiple ip address and I had to click on no about 20 times to stop it.

Answer:Best Free Firewall and Anti Virus + Spyware + Add

Before using ZoneAlarm Pro and AVG Pro I used the free versions of both and will recommend them.Spyware! I use AdAware.Pop-ups! The new Google toolbar as well as being a usefull add-on has an excellent pop-up blocker built in.

Hello all,

I returned from Disneyland to find my McAfee subscription has expired, which I knew was coming, I just thought I had a little more time.

This came with the machine, I didn't have a choice in not getting it.

I'm looking for suggestions on the best FREE Anti-virus, Firewall, Spyware and anything else you can think of to help protect my machine. I've tried searching, but the number of hits I received is just too numerous to wade through. I've used Avast, and Zone Alarm, and have no issues with using them again, I'm just wondering if anything else has come out in the two years I've been using McAfee.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jim

Hey,
Can anyone reccomend to me what's the best to download of those 3 categories?
My norton subscription is ending next week, and I was told not to renew it but to download individual products that are far better and gives better protection.
Of course across the net there's stuff like avg, ad-aware, mcafee etc.
I need some reccomendations on what's best.

Thank you.

I am running vista and end up with a virus or some sort of corruption. I had Macfee suite which could not detect it. So I gave up and installed a clean copy of windows. I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations for protection. I use Zone alarm on another PC and like it. Should I just use what comes with windows or seek out other software. I don't mind paying as long as it is worth it, but prefer free.

Answer:Anti-virus Firewall Spyware Recommendations

Well if your willing to pay for an Antivirus... I find NOD32 to be the best out there.. It's not a memory hog and is simply amazing .. so many features..
For firewalls COMODO firewall Pro. which is free.. is the best on the market right now for free firewalls... Only Con I give it is that i didn't install it fast enough
I'm not too sure if COMODO is compatible with vista though, but its worth a try.

I have picked up some sort of virus that keep bringing up pop-ups pretending to be windows that direct me to websites to buy anti-virus software. It has also changed 3 icons on my desktop to Error Cleaner, Privacy Protector and Spyware & Malware. It has changed my background to a big red picture with a hazard symbol that says "Your privacy is under threat" or something along those lines. I can no longer bring up task manager because it has changed my administrative authority. God knows what else it has changed. I have seen other people have also had this virus. I have followed the steps and got the 3 logs from Panda and DSS. I can post these when you need them. Please help! Thanks in advance. Adam

Answer:Best Free Anti-Virus/Firewall/Spyware remover?

Howdy scienceof
Looking at various PC mag reviews and enquiries on this forum, I would recommend AVG by Grisoft for a free antivirus,ZoneAlarm for a free firewall and you will need a couple of free spyware programmes.I recommend Spybot Search and Destroy;SpywareBlaster;Adaware SE;WinPatrol; and for tracking cookie removal and trojan detection, I didn't mind ASquared free version. I am still trialling various anti-spyware programmes and am looking at Microsofts AntiSpyware and Webroot Spysweeper, I think its called.

Answer:Please Help!!! Error Cleaner, Privacy Protector, Spyware and Malware Protection virus

Hi Welcome to TSG!!
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Open the c:\SDFix folder and double click RunThis.cmd to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool ... Read more

Googled all over, can't find an answer because on almost every link or forum when this question is discussed it invariably turns into a discussion of what people use on smart phones. Or the usual myths about Android is oh, so safe, safe just like the Mac and Linux and whatever they claim. Given that there is NO OPERATING SYSTEM on Earth THAT's SAFE, I post this. Let's start with ...Subject: A tablet that is NOT a smart or dumb phone, uses only Wi-Fi, runs Google's Android 3.1, needs something other than a built-in, default, blanket permission to connect everywhere it wants (facebook, twitter, scumware, trojans...), some of it behind your back, and can download a ton of free applications full of little ads from the Android Marketplace (many of which are sooooo cooool ).Any suggestions? Hi- I have a Dell computer with an Intel Celeron processor with 128MB of RAM and 996hz processor. I downloaded a Comodo firewall. Now I need anti-virus(preferably free) and spyware(preferably free). I checked the system requirements for Avast, AVG, and Comomdo anti-virus and they all require an Intel Pentium processor(or equivalent). Can I still get one of these products with an Intel Celeron processor? Or what anti-virus can I get with an Intel processor? I can't afford to get a new processor right now. ALso, do you know of any registry cleaner that I can download for free that will scan and clean my computer. One more thing, do you recommend more than one spyware program for a computer?

Yes all the software you mention will work with your processor. If the processor can run Windows it can run software created for Windows.

Hi,

I have this latop that I know if severely infected. I know for certain it has the Total Security & Windows Antivirus 2009 malware. I have also found traces of Lampsy Trojan, Biforse Trojan, Lineage-AV Trojan.

I have been able to kill these manually. I beleive there must be more infections. Whenever I try to install or run ANY type of anti-virus/spyware/malware it fails. I have tried MalwareBytes, SpyBot S&D, SuperAntispyware, Asquared and some others. These programs will either install .. IE ... the installer shuts down right away, or they will install but as soon as a scan is initiated they are shut down ... and once shut down they will not open again.

I have tried the renaming of the scan exectuable files as I read in some forums. This has no effect. No matter what I try no program will operate. I know there are still infections because regedit.exe will not start, msconfig will not start, when I right click on my computer and choose "properties" that wont load either.

I can see that iexplore.exe is running, and whenever I close it, it restarts itself without actually showing the browser. If I delete iexplore.exe from Program Files another one spawns.

I cannot boot into safemode. When I try, the drivers start to load but eventually the laptop just reboots itself after a point.

This PC just has be stumped. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

I use windows xp.

Can someone please recommend an anti-virus program that will also remove any spyware, or malware.

There's so many products out there, that for someone like me, I just don't know what to get. I don't expect free, but I can't pay an arm and a leg either.

Thanks so much,
Judy

Answer:Anti-virus,malware,spyware help Please.

No product will protect you from all infections and none can remove everything out there. Many free products work just as well as the paid options but nothing will protect you 100%. You, the end user, are the best defense.

The best method for protecting a system is to start with secure the system and being knowledgeable about online safety.

Running Windows with a limited user account, keeping ALL software updated and removing any software that is not used can help to reduce the chance of infections.

Answer:Hello. I'm new. Best anti-virus/malware/spyware?

This is what I tell folks who ask the question you have.
Choosing a security toolkit with anti-virus, firewall and anti-malware programs is a matter of personal preference, your needs, your technical ability and experience, features offered, user friendliness, ease of updating (and upgrading to new program release), ease of installation/removal, available technical support from the vendor and price. Other factors to consider include detection rates and methods, scanning engine effectiveness, how often virus definitions are updated, the amount of resources the program utilizes, how it may affect system performance and what will work best for your system. A particular anti-virus that works well for one person may not work as well for another. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your use and your system. There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is single no best anti-virus.Choosing an Anti-Virus ProgramSupplementing your Anti-Virus Program with Anti-Malware ToolsChoosing a Firewall

Hi there.

Once I clicked on it, it took me to a page that appeared to be a youtube page. Once there, it said that I had to update my Adobe in order to see the video. Well, like an idiot I clicked on it and all he-- broke loose. I now don't have access to use any of the following on my computer: Safe Mode, System Restore, Spybot Search and Destroy, AVG, Super Antispyware, or Ccleaner. If I hit F8 after rebooting the computer, it takes me to the black screen where I can choose Safe Mode. Once there, I pick safe mode and it brings me back to the same black screen over and over again. When I try to do system restore, it says it's disabled my group policy. Hi folks,

I've got an older VAIO pc with 512mb memory. Currently its got norton internet security on it, and I'm constantly running up against memory problems when all I have open is firefox (I am bad about getting a ton of tabs open at once tho). I'm about to have to renew subscription, and planning to go to zone alarm and a free anti-virus/malware type of program.

I've been assuming that zone (free version) is probably the best firewall option - please pipe up if you disagree.

I'd like suggestions for free anti-virus/malware.... I assume the two top picks are probably AVG free & AVAST free? Open to others if you're pretty sure they're better than those two.

A big issue is the active/constantly in use memory that the program uses however, so I'm hoping that someone here knows which of these (or other good options) uses the lowest amount of active/constantly running memory? I'm not worried about it during scans since I can schedule those for when I'm offline & not otherwise using the computer - its the active, always running memory usage by the program that's the problem.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Only 512Mb Memory, which free firewall & anti-virus/malware to use please?

For your AV go with Avira (it's the lightest on resources)
For the firewall Zonealarm is a good choice, also Comodo is worth a look aswell. im not sure how either do on the resource front but they are both very good firewalls.
[My personal recommendation would be Avira with Comodo]

Q
Oh yeah AVG fails IMO!

Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.Head over to the Freeware replacements For Common Commerical Apps topic for more

Hi,
I'm getting a new pc. My old one was plagued by viruses despite my constant attempts to rid them from my system and my antivirus software. So I'm looking to get the best software out there that is available so I don't have to deal with this stupid problem again.
I will have Vista home premium 64 bit. I will be using to computer for online gaming and also see the youtube videos and the explainer video, p2p, internet use ect. My Internet service provider supplies a free Mcafee version (they claim it is $120 value) but I'm not sure exactly all that it offers.
So what is the best anti-virus and anti-spyware software available? I'm not too concerned about the price, as far as I'm concerned almost any price will be worth not having to deal with constant trojans and viruses plaguing my rig. Should I go with what Comcast is offering for free or is there better stuff out there?
Thanks

Answer:What is the best anti-virus/malware/spyware software?

a new pc [with] Vista home premium 64 bit ???
My understanding is that extended support for Vista ended in April of this year... I can't picture any new Vista machines being available.   Assuming you can actually find one, keep in mind that Vista's "security" doesn't compare to current standards (i.e., what you'd get with Win10)... so if your primary concern is keeping your system secure and virus-free, I don't see Vista (if still available) as the answer.
As for the question of "best" antivirus, there's no real answer to that question.   Some people insist that paid programs are better than free ones ("you get what you pay for"), while others sincerely believe that several of the free programs do a great job.Personally, I use avast (free) or panda (free) on my various systems, and have not had a virus problem with either.   But I also am very careful how/where I surf, and have several "layers" of supplemental protection, as indicated in my signature.

Hi Guys, I just got a new laptop and had a simple question. I am new to windows 8 and want to know if anyone has any good good Anti-Virus, Malware, & Spyware programs for windows 8 that are easy to use for novice/intermediate user (mostly novice on window 8)? Laptop came preloaded with Norton Internet Security but I was wondering if there was anything better for window 8?Edit: Moved topic from Windows 8 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Answer:Good Anti-Virus, Malware, & Spyware programs?

Malwarebytes

SuperAntiSpyware

There are a number of free antivirus programs, I like Avast, others like AVG, and there's Microsoft Security Essentials.

I would suggest staying away from registry cleaners and other enhancement programs, they are overrated for what they actually will do and can actually be damaging when used improperly.  The usual tools like Disk Defragmenter, Disk Cleanup used on a regular basis will help keep the system running smooth.

Hi,

I was wondering what is the best free protection software I can use against virus/spyware/malware/etc, I can run on Windows 7. Currently I'm running Super Anti-spyware Free Edition, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free, and the latest McAfee Good Security Package provided by my Internet Service Provider (that claims to have the best protection on the market). I'm not sure how true this is, but would this be a good combination of programs to protect my system without conflicting with each other. What about Microsoft Security Essentials Free Edition (but I don't think I can run it with McAfee since it will conflict)? I used to run Avira Anti-Vir Free edition, until I switched internet providers and got McAfee for free. I did notice with McAfee that my system did use more resources, meaning I hear my CPU fan running a little higher than usual, but other than that, no issues.

Any suggestions as to which software combination I should keep on my system and which ones I should remove?

Windows 7 64 bit Home Edition (i3)

Answer:BEST Free ANTI-Virus/spyware/ malware combo?

If you're remaining with freebies:
Avast, Avira, etc antivirus will work for you [don't forget to not-install and/or disable un-wanted/un-needed modules].
SUPERAntispyware, SpywareBlaster, Spybot version 1.62, along with the others you mentioned will be ok.
I removed MSE from my laptops 'cause it wasn't needed.
Comodo Firewall [ditto on un-necessary modules] will work fine.
Windows 7's Firewall is really good! Comodo Firewall is not needed unless you want a "backup firewall" lurking unused.

I'm more and more going with pay-fors because I have better setup, configuration, settings, tweakings with pay-fors. Note: the data files for detection and alerting [and for many - removal] are the same for free and fee.

After following removal procedures from other websites, this thing is still on my computer and is slowing it down massively, and slowing down our internet connection as well. It is called Vista Anti-Spyware 2011, and I want to get rid of it but am not sure how. I ran avast and malwarebytes, but have been thus far unable to get it off of my computer. I can still access the internet, and open programs, but I can't close out the icon in the bottom right corner by the clock. I have attached the DDS file as instructed. as the thread title mentions, looking for some solid free 'Anti- Virus/Malware/Spyware' software.

it's for my brother's family PC which i've just finished building. not looking for perfect cover, just something that's 'fire & forget' or enough to keep 'em out of trouble so they're not calling me every few months to fix their machine. i know a single piece of software isn't going to do the job (tho consolidation would be nice) however ideally should run automatically in the background with little user input.

after having a quick look at the 'How-to Guide' sticky,
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1426658

thought these 3 suggestions might cover their PC;
-Avira AntiVir Personal
-Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
-Spybot Search & Destroy

would running these on my brother's PC be enough or should i be looking at something else?

Hello-
My computer keeps getting these popups about protecting against viruses and populates this fictitious list of infected programs that don't exist. I followed the removal instructions off of this website:

http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-vista-anti-virus-2011.html

After completing the first step, where i registered the number with the fake anti-spyware program, the popups stopped, and my computer is running really slowly but relatively normally as I run malwarebytes and avast full system scans. How can I know if I completely removed this thing after the scans are done? I just want to be sure that I get this taken care of instead of just making it not a visible threat that is still there.

My computer is running extremely slow. Every time I run Spybot Search & Destroy it comes up with numerous problems which I repair. Upon running Spybot again all of the same files are shown as problems. Upon running adaware/avira/avg 8.5 etc. the scan stalls out about 3/4 of the way through always on a system32 driver file.

Hello uhaul12001 Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine. After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. The first thing we need to do before moving ahead is get all of those antivirus programs off of your machine. You only need one and having even two can cause serious problems but I see three on your system...Avast, Avira and AVG. You need to go to Add/Remove and take off all but one. Even if you disable them a lot of time the services are left running. After that please run the following:I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScanHold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

Hello,

I'm an IT consultant for several small to medium-sized business.  I've mostly use Avast and Malwarebytes for my Anti-virus and Malware protection.  For the small offices it's easy to manage, but for bigger offices, keeping track of anti-virus expiration dates is ridiculous (since it will be different based on when they get a new computer) and this week it was proven that I can't rely on the staff to let me know when a registration is expiring.  One of the computers was infected with CryptoLocker because he ignored the 30-day daily reminders of Avast expiring.  Fortunately, I was able to minimize the data lost to 4 hours to 12 hours by using Shadow Copies and the previous nights backup for the database applications that got encrypted.  Please note, they also host their own exchange server (SBS 2011/Exchange 2010 or SBS 2008/Exchange 2007)

So, with that preface, I need a good business management solution that provides virus, malware, phishing, spam, web-content filtering and blocking of potentially harmful sites.  For one of the offices, I do have a Barracuda Anti-Virus/Spam firewall, but this is only for email not web-content filtering.

I am considering the following:

BitDefender Small Office Security
Untangle NG Firewall - would order the hardware from them
Dell SonicWall solution - debating between NSA or TZ series for the medium-sized businesses.

I also really like the Barracuda devices, ... Read more

Before I list the softwares in consideration, are computer protection suites even necessary when matched against freeware? If they are, which one of these 5 suites do you recommend and why: AVG, BitDefender, Kaspersky, MacAfee, and TrendMicro. I chose the first 4 because they were among the higher rated in Consumer Report; TrendMicro was included because I have had decent personal experience with it. Thanks for your consideration.

Yesterday a pop up called rapid anti virus somehow installed itself onto my computer and then started installing numerous websites onto my computer and connecting to the internet when I didnt want to. Hello ancient gods of computer wizardry,

I your humble and lowly servant come to you with a problem.

I've noticed my computer has been doing some erratic things lately. When in the login screen after starting up, the computer makes the login sound before I actually type anything in. That's my first indicator that something is wrong.

Also, I recently downloaded the start.qon8 PUP and was able to get through step 1 of removing it. however, when I go to step 2 using the Junkware removal tool, I noticed that a few minutes into the scan, my computer freezes up. The whole thing. I can't move the mouse, CTRL ALT DEL doesnt work and I have to do a hard restart to get it working again.

Crazy thing is, it's happening with other programs that scan my computer. Adaware, Malware bytes, AVG, Microsoft security essentials... They all freeze after a few minutes. I've noticed that it freezes when I get to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ataport.sys

I think that having 3 different scanners freeze at this file indicates that this file may be corrupt, but I leave this up to you gentlemen (or ladies) to help me.
This is beyond my capabilities. Please help.

V/R,
A Lost LT

Answer:Windows 7 freezes when running any anti spyware/virus/malware scans

Welcome aboard

You surely can't be running two AV programs (MSE and AVG) so you must uninstall one of them.
If AVG use AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities

When done try another scan.

Need opinions on this combination of tools for fighting and protecting from the bad stuff :

NOD32 (very fast, high detection rate, low footprint)

Counterspy (same engine used in MS anti-spyware, I will be using this for active protection and scanning, highest detection rate they say)

Spysweeper (only for scanning)

Adaware SE Pro (only for scanning)

Also opinions on the new NOD32 2.5 (was beta untill a few days ago) and how/if it will affect active spyware protection in other tools.

What is the difference between spyware software and a regsitry cleaner?  Should I have both? Thanks.

Answer:spyware software vs. registry cleaner

Spyware software looks for malware.Registry cleaners look for empty or broken registry keys. They do two completely different things. Registry cleaners/optimizers should be treated with extreme caution. They remove whatever they find. With no warning many users find their system unbootable after using a powerful registry cleaner. If you are not 110% positive what is being removed is safe to remove, then don't do it. You really will have no noticeable increase in performance by cleaning the registry anyway so don't worry too much about it. Defragging the registry from time to time should be enough.Auslogics Registry Defrag - http://www.majorgeeks.com/Auslogics_Registry_Defrag_d5668.html

Maybe about a year ago, Tech Support Guy solved my trojan horse problem in about two days. At that time, it was recommended that I use Easy Cleaner (and Super Anti Spyware) to clear up my problem. I've been using them ever since. I was wondering if TSG still recommends these free programs. SAS continues to update their definitions, but I've never been able to update Easy Cleaner. Should I delete it?

Thanks...and TSG ROCKS!

I have read several posts regarding Ucleaner and spyware. I am having similar problems:

-- There are three new icons on my desktop: (1) Error Cleaner (2) Privacy Protector (3) Spyware&Malware Protection. When mousing over these icons, the popup window indicates that they lead to "http://viruswebprotect.com/shandler/php?..."

-- I periodically get pop up icons that say "someone is trying to attack my computer" and there was a message that stated "Win32.netsky worm has infected my computer"

I have completed the five steps listed in the "before you post" thread. The only deviation from that is that I already have Windows XP SP2 installed. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,* Download Combofix to your desktop.Doubleclick combofix.exeFollow the prompts.Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang. When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt. Donna over at Calendar of Updates has posted a second test regarding the viability of free anti-malware and free anti-spyware programs - Malware Detections of Free Anti-Malware/Anti-Spyware

For those who don't know, Donna also previously posted another test, Rogue Detections: Old, Not So Old and New Threats

Hi John

Looks like a fairly good test, unfortunately it's on an XP box. Do you know if they plan on running one on a Vista system, since the way that many malware works will affect it's viability on Vista systems?

Thanx for the link! Still lots of good info there for our members.

Shortcut Cleaner is a free utility from Bleeping Computers that will scan your computer for Windows shortcuts that have been hijacked by unwanted or malicious software. When Shortcut Cleaner finds bad shortcuts, it will automatically clean them so that they do not open unwanted programs.
The scan takes a few seconds only and when it has finished scanning your hard drive it will create a log file on your desktop called sc-cleaner.txt and then display it. Download page.

Answer:Shortcut Cleaner Scans Registry and Shortcuts for Malware

I have used this nice little shortcut and "Registry cleaner" before. My only complaint is that it automatically fixes things it finds. I would rather it present me with a list of findings, then allow me to pick and choose what to fix (if anything found).
That said, this program should not find any hijacked shortcuts or Registry entries. If it finds a shortcut or Registry entry that has been compromised and hijacked by one of those malicious programs, that means your security defenses were compromised and you need to secure and clean your computer immediately, and re-evaluate your security setup, and most importantly, tweak your user discipline.
And yes, this is a Registry cleaner.

Microsoft Pre-release Definition Updates

"Microsoft offers partially-tested pre-release definition updates for download before the fully-tested (released) version is available. These updates are listed below.

You can use these pre-release definitions to clean infected computers. You can also use them to protect computers that are at an immediate risk of infection. The pre-release definition update is not meant for enterprise-wide deployment.

Pre-release updates are explicitly created for malicious software threats. You should not deploy a pre-release definition update if you are not experiencing a threat for which it was explicitly created.

Note: After additional testing, certain pre-release definition updates will be released as regular definition updates. The same binary file that was used for the pre-release definition update may be used for the released definition update."

I'm always trying to keep up with the latest and greatest anti-spyware and anti-malware programs. I use Avast as my anti-virus program and for my main anti-spyware/anti-malware programs I use:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Spybot - Search & Destroy
SpywareBlaster
SUPERAntiSpyware

I also sometimes use:

Ad-Aware
a-squared
RogueRemover

Are there any other good programs I should know about? I figure the more the better!

Thanks!

Answer:Are there any good new anti-spyware/anti-malware programs?

Spyware Terminator.-- Web Security Guard is included in the download but not required. After installation you will be prompted to Enable Web Security Guard Toolbar. This browser add-on (similar to Site Advisor) is enabled by default so be sure to uncheck the box if you do not want it installed. If you install WSG by mistake, it can easily be removed later via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.-- If you already have an anti-virus application, there is no need to install the optional Clam AntiVirus integration. ClamAV does not have a real time scanning engine but you can integrate it into ST's Realtime Shield to include virus scanning support. However, you can overkill your system with resource heavy security programs that will drain your resources and slow down performance. Sometimes you just have to experiment to get the right combo for your particular system as there is no universal solution that works for everyone. mvps.org is no longer recommending Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware due to poor testing results. See here - (scroll down and read under Freeware Antispyware Products) Further, most people don't understand Spybot's TeaTimer or how to use it and that feature can cause more problems than it's worth. While not free, I recommend using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and taking advantage of the Protection Module which uses advanced heuristic scanning technology to monitor your system and provide real-time protection to prevent the installation of most new malware. This technology... Read more

Hi shearty,Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem. Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs. These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. I have a three year old HP Pavillion dv1000, that had an up to date McAfee (AOL free version - kind of strapped for money) and a couple of days old Spybot update, Windows XP.I had a msg of two trojans on my McAfee Anti-virus the other day. Earlier, I'd received two e-mails from a friend whose e-mails I trust (but???); one was a highlighted link and the other had a link I had to cut and paste to my browser. The one I pasted took me to a website that wouldn't fully load. A few hours later is when I got the trojan msg from McAfee.Roughly twenty-four hours later, I ran my MCafee, followed by Spybot. Spybot failed to load; so, I deleted it and went to download it again; but, I couldn't find a link that would work. I started suspecting my McAfee was bad; so, I tried to got to the McAfee website; but, it kept timing out and not allowing me to access the website.  Additionall, system restore wouldn't execute past the requested restore date and I ran Registry Mechanic.I ran a search for any files modified in the past week and another for "*.exe" modified in the past week. I found "sysvxd.exe". It's certainly a messy little process you've got going on there.  Heh.  But at least you managed to get us some logs, which is what matters.  Your MBAM scan found a nasty infection (probably what's causing most of your problems), but it wasn't removed.  Try scanning with MBAM again and this time, instruct it to remove the infections.  When you do this, post the new log.  Also, follow these instructions below...Please print these instructions as they will be needed later when Internet access is not available. Download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop. http://rapidshare.com/files/168491182/SDFix.exe.htmlWhen using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with Administrative rightsDouble click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%(this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).DO NOT use it just yet..Reboot your computer in Safe Mode using the F8 method. This popped up on my computer last night and a quick search showed that it's apparently a virus. I ran across instructions on another site before I came here which recommended restarting in safe mode, downloading rkill, running that, downloaded malwarebytes, performing a full scan, and then apparently the scan was supposed to find it so it can be removed. I followed those steps except that the internet wouldn't work in safe mode so I restarted again and downloaded the programs from a normal startup. After performing a full scan, it didn't find anything to do with the Winzip Registry Cleaner so I don't think it's gone. So far I haven't had any bad symptoms, but I'd like to get rid of this thing as soon as possible... is there a way to tell if it's still here?

Was looking around and didn't find much on Trojanware, Spyware, or Malware cleaners. I'm trying to salvage a computer before I perform a clean install. This computer is not mine, I don't have the software, I didn't want to fix it, but it was forced on me. Its full of everything and anything as far as malware, spyware, and trojanware are concerned. What is the best way to clean? Or what scanners should I be using?

I've used Spybot, Adaware, SuperAntiSpyware, AntVir, and Norton. But, there are still stuff on it. I don't want to waste my life away finding specific trojanware fixes either..is there a generic scanner that will look for all sorts of trojanware, rather than a specific type?

Like I said, this computer it no mine, I wanna get rid of if as fast and easy as possibly, minus a clean install (I don't have software or XP key for it)..

Thanks

Answer:Best Trojan/Spyware/Malware Scanner/Cleaner?

I haven't found 1x product that's been effective enough to use by itself...when I'm cleaning infested systems.

First thing I run is CCleaner. It's great at removing temp files...and in doing such...you cut down the amount of useless "junk" that ad/spyware scanners have to scan..so it saves you time.

Spybot S&D...I still find it good....update, each time you update you must reimmunize..and run scan. Recently v 1.6 came out.

SuperAntispyware is very effective....free, frequent updates. It slows down your system a bit...I only leave it running full time protection on end users who I know will infect themselves easily.

Grisoft AVG "AS"...their Antispyware product is good, I'm not overly fond of their antivirus, but this is a redoing of the Ewido product...which itself was a great cleaning tool...that Grisoft bought up. It's a "trial"...so I install it...update it, run a few scans..and then uninstall it.

A-Squared has been around a while..and is also a good scanner/removal tool. They have a free version.

Adaware...I've not found this very useful over the past several years...I don't even use it anymore.

SpywareBlaster is a good "protection" program..does not slow down performance, it is not a removal tool but it helps protect those who find themselves picking up malware. Think of it as a condom for your web browser (protects both IE and Firefox).

I have Avira Antivir Free addition. I was wondering do I also need an anti malware protection? Which would be a good and cheap anti malware?

Answer:Anti Malware, Anti Spyware Software

Well, I do not run any anti-spyware/malware protection in real time but I do scan with it often. All the products I use to do this are free and easy. My favorite ones are SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy. Since getting the first two, I rarely use Spybot for scanning as it is much slower than the others and I feel the others do a better job.

However, I like Spybot because it has an immunize feature for immunizing you system against known bad threats and also has a feature called SD Helper which is bad site blocker, anyways I think that is the name of the feature that does that. Also it can help you control what programs are allowed to start on bootup. Do not use that last feature unless you are an advanced computer user and know the difference between what does and doesn't need to start up when the system does. For most items, Spybot will give its recommendation on keeping that program running if you open the side panel and click on the item. Good rule of thumb on that one is, if it is a Windows program, leave it running, if it is for a program you just installed, you can decide if you want it to run or not when the system starts up. Other than the windows programs, the only things I allow to run on start up are my keyboard (as I use its customized features) and my anitvirus/firewall program.

I have just spent two nights removing the "Fake System Restore" virus from my girlfriends laptop

I have installed; AVAST anti virus, Zone Alarm firewall and MalwareBytes onto the laptop,
but I now wonder if there are any other reccomended programs that I should install
to help avoid spyware, malware and viruses?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Which are the best Anti Spyware and Anti Malware programs?

I recommend taking advantage of the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Pro) Protection Module in the full version which uses advanced heuristic scanning technology to monitor your system and provide real-time protection to prevent the installation of most new malware. This technology runs at startup where it monitors every process and helps stop malicious processes before they can infect your computer. Keep in mind that this feature does not guarantee something will not slip through as no product can detect and prevent every type of malware. The database that defines the heuristics is updated as often as there is something to add to it. Also keep in mind that Malwarebytes does not act as a real-time protection scanner for every file like an anti-virus program so it is intended to be a supplement, not a substitute. IP Protection (malicious website blocking) is part of the Protection Module and works after it is enabled. When attempting to go to a potential malicious website, Malwarebytes will block the attempt and provide an alert. IP Protection is also designed to block incoming connections it determines to be malicious. Enabling the Protection Module feature feature requires registration and purchase of a license key that includes free lifetime upgrades and support. After activation, Malwarebytes can be set to update itself and schedule scans automatically on a daily basis. The Protection Module is not intrusive as the program utilizes few system resources and should not conflict wi... Read more
