Left Side Hinge Plastic Casing Piece Broken and Right Side L...

Question: Left Side Hinge Plastic Casing Piece Broken and Right Side L...

Model: HP Pavilion m6 Notebook PC 15". Laptop used minimally and still in beautiful shape other than these noted issues: Left hinge is broken away from plastic casing (see pic) and Right hinge is broken away from lid plastic (see pic). From what I'm reading, it seems the plastic base, chassis, and possibly lid base and hinge need replaced. Please let me know what HP is offering as far as replacement parts and repair. This seems to be an ongoing issue with HP notebooks. I've purchased a total of three HP notebook/laptops over the past four years so I'm very concerned about these issues and why HP has allowed it to continue for so long and across so many different models. It seems to me the plastic used in making these parts does not have the tensile strength required in notebook/laptop use. I would think this issue would've been corrected years ago and not have continued. Please advise. I do love all my HP laptops other than these issues. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Very frustrated with this...I opened the laptop gently as I would always do  and the hinge on the left side of the laptop just snapped and popped out of the plastic monitor frame.  The design of the hinges are just terrible and i can now see how they work because the case has been damaged just from opening and closing the laptop.  I can now see inside the whole left side of the case.  To top it off I have already invested considerable time into upgrading the OS to Windows 10 and customizing and installing software on this laptop. I cannot close my laptop entirely since the screen closes on an incorrect angle. Since I am out of warranty, is there any way to fix this problem? After reading several posts, it seems to be a common problem with the envy models.

The left side hinge on my touch enables Inspiron 15 (5558) is broken.  When I opened the device on my desk, it made a cracking sound and the case-lid seemed to seperate from the screen assembly. According to the tag on the bottom, it's under warranty until December 20th this year.  How do I go about getting this repaired?  I can not move the screen at this point.  I have it in an open position, but if I'm very gentle and use many hands, I could get it closed.  Any help would be appreciated.

Left hinge broke and computer came open! I didn't do anything to cause this to happen. I need to travel with my laptop and I am afraid something bad will happen due to this problem. Opening and closing the broken hinge causes the case to open a little more.

My left hinge has recently become visibly broken, with the top keyboard metal casing and the bottom black plastic casing becoming seperated near the hinge. I have also noticed the fan making rattling sounds as if broken pieces from the hinge have entered it. The right hinge also was slightly opening the case but tighting the screw on that side has kept that from reoccuring. Although I put in a new screw into the left hand side from enderneath the case, it has since fallen though into the casing or out completely due to the broken hinge part inside. I have seen many posts on here talking about a similar problem and many have been frustrated with the poor repsonse from HP who haven't wanted to repair the laptops for free in these cases, as this seems to be a design fault. I am no longer under warranty and do not have £100 + to fork out on a laptop which was roughly £800 RRP which is not even 2 years old due to a design fault. Is there any other way of repairing. Also, I had someobody look at this, and they say this can only be repaired with a new top case part number 720570-001.However, this isn't directly sold by HP at the moment, only through resellers and it seems that is roughly £180. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated as I am a student and tutor  and so I rely on this laptop very much and it is vital that it is working without issue at the moment as it is the middle of exam period. Regards,ARIA

I can't tell with your description if this is something to be worried about but if you could post a screen shot it would be great. Like always if it something you really worried about and you are in warranty call up customer service and set up case and have them look at it.

left hinge broken and screw jammed fan.  Took to repair place and took screw out of fan and glued the hinge and case together at left corner.  Cost $120.  Lasted 1 day without opening and closing laptop.  Obviously, this is a common problem and a manufactures defect by all the complaints.  Does HP have a real solution to fix this?  And, why has not HP addressed this problem in a recall?  Very disappointed in this as this was NOT a cheap computer.  Retired on a low fixed income and cannot afford to replace my computer.

My HP envy 6 one side hinge is broken and currently cannot be folded, i have use it as a desktop for some months now, as i will travel overseas soon and will need it to be fixed. And becuase it cannot be folded, it seems like a disaster to take it to any place for repair.  It looks like the display screen will split open if i force to fold it, so i have been leaving it as it is. It is funny that i didn't realise it was broken straight away, as i didn't drop it or did any damage to it at all. I almost only fold it at night and open it in the morning using it as a desktop most times.  It just happened when i tried to fold it one night  and found out this problem. It didn't give me any hint that it was about to broke. I searched it online and found out it is a common problem and also there are quite some pictures of showing the similar problems to my HP Envy 6.  It is a still sweet thing to use and i don't want to replace it yet.  I have installed a couple of expensive software on it and rely it for work... From my searches it seems like a very common problem of HP laptops. I would like to know if HP has any system/procedures in place to fix this common issue which seems to me a quality defect . My laptop is currently out of warranty and also just out of the warranty from where i bought it.  Needless to say, my previous laptop that i have used for more than 6 years, the hinges are still good. however this HP envy 6 's hinge ... The left hinge on my laptop has come apart and it's affecting the screen display. I have had my laptop for only 2/3 years and had no problems but it's frustrating it's happening now because I'm in the middle of exams. I have searched this thread and people have had similar problems. After a couple of seconds the screen starts turning white and I have to physically push down the left side to get any response. Is there any way this can be resolved?

I bought a Dell Inspiron 5545. From the first day I lifted the screen of the laptop, there was a click from the right side where the hinge of the screen meets the base of the laptop. I just assumed this was something internally that kept the screen in the open position because there are so many other items click when you open them. However, over the past few weeks a gap started to appear that has become increasingly larger between what appears to be the bottom of the case and the top in that same place where the right hinge is.
C'mon Dell.  It is a design flaw and should be fixed as such.

I have an Inspiron 5545 running win10.
On opening, the right side hinge on the keyboard section pulled three screws and inserts free, cracked the plastic in the corner where the hinge is located, killed the WiFi, and caused an intermittent vertical line to appear on the screen.
The laptop has never been out of  the house, never dropped, and seldom left my lap when I was home.
It runs, but is held together with aa 1.5" black paper clamp and connects to the home network via a USB WiFi dongle from Wal-Mart..
This is my fourth or fifth laptop and the first to have the case fail.  This is a design failure in my opinion.  Boo on you, Dell.  I've bought a lot of your computers over the years because they worked and did not fall apart with normal use.  This one disappoints.

I feel cheated ; I spent $1000 on a laptop & I cant use it ot get it repaired now.  Sunder

Answer:Lenovo u530 right side hinge broken

If the touchscreen isn't broken and it's only the plastic attached to the hinge you can carefully drill through the top cover and put a thin bolt or screw.

The plastic didn't fit back on so I trimmed it.  It'll void the warranty, but what good is a warranty if no one will honor it?

Hi, I am hoping for assistance with repairing or replacing the screen hinge on the right side of my laptop.  When I open the screen I can see the actual laptop body splitting.  Looking inside the screw hole I can see broken black plastic and and hear something moving inside when opening/closing. The computer is only about 15 mo old, so it is out of warranty, but since it's my secondary laptop I would have expected something as basic as the hinge to last a lot longer than this!   Does anyone know if HP is able to send me a free replacement part that I can use to fix it myself? Thanks in advance,Matt

Hello, I bought an Acer Aspire R15 with Windows 10 from Best Buy in mid-June 2016. I just noticed today that the left side hinge is stuck at a 180 degree angle, so that my screen looks lopsided. (I think I have once, just to see that it really will do this, turned it into tablet mode from laptop mode, and back again, so it isn't as though I have been swinging it around willy-nilly!) Anyway, I have tried to free it up but daren't apply pressure as I am afraid of breaking the case, or the display, or the hinge itself! Any ideas, anyone out there? Please? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Acer Aspire R15: Left side hinge is stuck at a 180...

Hi, It is unfortunate to hear about the issues you're having with your case and opening the lid to your laptop. I would recommend having the machine serviced.

I can assure you that a far larger portion of Acer laptops do not have this issue. A lot of research, time and developement go into the area around the hinges to minimize issues, but laptops have had these issues for 20+ years. The hinge is a common component that produces a lot of stress. While we do measure ourselves to others, a quick google search replacing Acer for another manufacture is sure to produce the same results.

Good Afternoon, I recently bought became an acer user after I found this Aspire laptop that had everything that I wanted at a reasonable price. But after just a couple years the left side near the adapter plug in began to crackle everytime the screen was open and closed, slowly on the same side the plasitic became more and more separated, until recently this was not a major issue but as time wore on that small gap has become so wide it seperates the whole computer in two causing my the port that the power cord is connected to has fallen deep inside the laptop. As I begin to research this problem I came to find that this was something that has happened to almost every acer laptop no matter the price or type, now my question is since this is a manufacturers problem shouldnt ACER fix this issue without any cost to the customer since it is something that should have been fix in design phase? I find this perplexing because I have owned other laptops that I have droped (I have never dropped this one) that has NEVER split open. PS if you do not believe me research for yourself. most of these malfunction happen before a years usage

Hi, I have just noticed that the metal covering the hinge on the left side of the keyboard near the speaker is warping, it looks like its bending due to the laptop being opened.. Surely this is right is it? I have called the vendor who advised me that the issue was not a fault but merely cosmetic so it was not there problem and I should speak to the manufacturer.  Whilst is not a problem now it no doubt soon will be if the hinge breaks or the screen pulls away.  What can I do? It seems really hard to contract Lenovo UK and after googling a method of contacting them, all I found were endless forums sites about how people have problems with their customer service ..help? Is there anyone on this site who can help or anyone from Lenovo customer care in the UK? Cheers Scott

Has anyone else seen this problem.   I've had two laptops and nearly 14 months (4 months after warranty expiration), the left hinge plastic bezel has cracked.  I suspect this is a universal problem as I've met with other laptop owners who have experienced the same thing at nearly the same time....just after warranty expiration.
I know that in nearly all manufacturers of laptops that this is occurring and oddly nearly all are the left hinge bezel/plastic.  HP customers, I believe, have launched a class action lawsuit.

Is there a class action lawsuit against Dell for this same problem?  It sounds like all manufacturers are getting their laptop hinge bezels from the same place. This is a problem that Dell needs to address...immediately.

This is my first time ever posting on a forum, but I am having a problem on the left side of my 17 inch HP Envy. The left hinge seems to be forcing the bottom and top of the lab top to separate. When you open or close it makes the left corner of the lab top separate. Closing it makes the parts go back together. This started a couple days ago and already the computer is starting to go into thermal shutdown modes and some of the little vent covers are starting to fall off.  I have always had an HP computer and own two others but I?m really disappointed in this one.  It hasn?t lasted long enough to be worth the amount I paid. I have read several other threads that have people experiencing the same issues. What are my options to fix this or is this just wasted money? Any responses/help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

When I insert a flash drive into one of the dead ports, initially the message pops up indicating that the computer recognizes something has been inserted into the port, but then it immediately disappears and the port is dead. I went to Device Manger-->Portable Devices and tried to fix one of the three dead ports. At some point (after I scanned for hardware changes, I think) it did show the drive letter, but it had a yellow triangular error-message  indicator. I right-clicked and selected Properties, and it said "This device cannot start (code 10)." Then the drive letter disappeared, though it has come back sporadically. I hope this is clear. Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks. Jane Doe

Hi,
I recently bought my Dell XPS 9560. My dell xps screen appears cooler on the left side and slightly warmer on the right side. It is not noticeable in any color but when I visit websites with a white background like google, I can notice that the right side is slightly warmer (yellowish) which is distracting. Any idea on how should I proceed with the issue?
Thanks

Answer:Dell XPS 9560 Screen - left side cooler and right side warmer

If "recently" is less than 21 days from shipment and from Dell directly, the best option is to contact customer support and have the system replaced.
If it's more than 21 days from shipment, the warranty will cover the display replacement, which is the only solution -- though if the system is new enough, you're better off having it replaced than repaired.

After I reinstalled Windows XP Home on a P4 2.4 G computer and checked Quick Launch in Taskbar & Start Menu Properties, I double clicked the Quick Launch divider in error, and Quick Launch displayed on the second row of the Taskbar.  I was finally able to get Quick Launch on a single row of the Taskbar.  However, it is now on the right side of the Taskbar, and I have not been able to move it to the traditional left side.  While it does not create an operational problem, I am accustomed to Quick Launch being on the left.  Quick Launch is not locked.  How can I get it back to the left side of the Taskbar, with open programs showing on the right?

Answer:Move Quick Launch From Right Side To Left Side Of Taskbar

Click and drag the divider, that should move the toolbar about.Just drag it to its normal position. It works for me, anyway.Hope this helps.

Has anyone seen this before?
This seems to be happening more and more, I am using my PC (with Windows 8 Pro) as an HTPC and its connected via HDMI to a plasma TV so the PC is always on. Sometimes, when I go to use the pc I turn the TV on and then move the mouse around to turn the display on and I see the attached image, it looks as though the screen has shifted to the right and wrapped around to the other side.
I ran windows 7 with the same hardware on this setup for years without an issue. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I have a CTL 17" LCD monitor. This morning I turned on my pc and found that the left side of my monitor is darker than the right side. Any idea as to what the problem could possibly be?

Answer:My monitor is brighter on the right side than on the left side

I don't know which orientation the tubes have, but if it is vertical, the tubes on the left may be on their way out. Most LCD monitors unless specifically advertised otherwise (ie - LED) use fluorescent tubes for the backlight.

So, I'd say it is on its way out and there is nothing you can do to fix it short of just replacing it. The left side may brighten to normal after being on several minutes/hours. Did you notice if that happened the longer you had it on?

I've been having a a problem with the back left corner hinge since October of last year I poisted to another board about this problem hving been told that this issue would be passed onto support in my region. I'm currious as to weather I'll hear from these people in this lifetime or the next. I enjoy my Laptop and would like to continue using it but as time goes on it keeps seperating more and more and I have to snap it back into place to keep in together. I'm hoping to actually hear back from someone this time that will be able to help me in fixing this issue.

I have 2 USB ports on my laptop and only one of them is broken. The plastic part broke off and it clearly doesn't work anymore. The other port is fully intact, but it won't recognize any thing i plug in. Is there anyway I can fix the unbroken port so that it works?

(someone else had this problem but it was not answered, that's how I found this forum)

Laptop acer 5517 - i hate those sliding 'mouse' gimme a plain old fashioned one I can handle (and slam down when something doesn't go right )

I use the usb port for a mouse and for a real keyboard - a splitter will work but neither usb will work when one is broken (i put the stupid cord in upside down and broke the little plastic black part in one of them).

Hey

i have U500 and there is a silver plastic strip around the LCD and from left down corner a small piece is broken..
Can anyone tell me how to fix it and does it cover in warranty?

Answer:Satellite U500-00x small piece is broken from plastic LCD frame

>Can anyone tell me how to fix it
For me it sounds like something is broken and in my opinion just an part replacement would help.

>does it cover in warranty?
I doubt such issues are covered by warranty since it?s an broken part and an part cannot break without any external impact?

But for details I recommend contacting an ASP technician? maybe they could provide more details and how to handle such case?

Good luck

I have the  same problem described above. Envy 17 (silver) i5 - the corner of the case is spreading apart and now it is also happening on the right side. I have had to use gorilla tape to try to hold the case together.  It appears that this is a design flaw for this laptop. The laptop works, but over time, I'm afraid that it will get so bad that it will not run.  Is there a replacement case available?  Thank you.

Just checking if there has been a fix for this since I see this has been a problem for many people. I as well noticed the hinge and casing pulling apart but never thought it was broken. Until the fan stop working and computer wanted to shut down. Quite frequently I heard the fan making screetching noises which probably had the plastic from the hinge and casing floating around it. My question is this an easy fix or just buy a new laptop. Paid alot of money for this and works great other than this problem. Thanks

The left hinge seems to be undone and when you open/close it seems to pry off the left corner of the plastic bottom of the casing. After the laptop is closed, i can push the parts back together, but upon opening it gets torn open again. What can I do, is there a replacment casing I can buy or something? We have been having an issue for the past few months with the left hinge getting very stiff and hard to open and close the screen. Over the holiday break I was finishing up my college coursework, and went to shut down the laptop and noticed the silver bezel around the power button bulged. I started to close the lid to look around the back and bottom of the laptop, when I heard a snapping sound and the bottom casing just popped off in the corner! The screw stripped out and the hinge was exposed as well as the fan.  I am a certified in A+, Network+, and Security + , and have never seen the quality of workmanship so poor for such an important part of an expensive item! This is my second HP (the old still going strong with no issues) and I love both of these machines, just disappointed in the workmanship... any way to get this fixed?

I'm at wits end here, I can't play any of my favorite games If I can't enjoy decent audio. The problem I have and this is if I use headset or straight speakers, is It never comes out both sides at same time. The only exception to this is music. I can hear music On my computer fine or music in the game fine.

Im conviniced this is an audio card issue, because I used this exact same setup on my old computer. I have this problem in both games I like to play, Wow and Fallout, New vegas. in FO:NV howerver, I hear it out of one side or the other, unless im talking directly to that person. In which case I hear nothing at all.

I have the exact same problem described on many discussion boards.   Envy 17  - the corner of the case is spreading apart. Closed, I can press it back together, but when opened the corner pops open again.  It seems to get worse every time it's opened. Note also, the hinge on that side (left) looks like it is sitting lower than the right when open.I've read TONS of this complaint on the Internet. Is it true that these hinges are GLUED in place? Has this been officially recognized as a design flaw by HP yet? Has there been a warranty extension issued? This seems to be a very widespread problem. Thanks!

I bought my laptop on February 8th, 2015 from Best Buy Online and have bought this exact same computer before. With my first Pavilion g7, it would overheat a lot when I played games like Sims or even Minecraft. I would always have it somewhat off of the lapdesk I use so the fan could work and I made sure that It wasn't blocked off. The fan was still so loud that I'd have to mute my microphone because all of my friends on skype could hear my fan. Slowly but surely I noticed my hinge was pulling apart the plastic casing. One day my dog jumped down from the couch and tripped on the charger that my laptop was plugged into. He pretty much took my laptop with him to the floor (he's not a big dog but the cord was connected so it fell with it,) and my carefulness with the hinge and overheating was worthless when I ran to go see if it was broken and it surely was. It dropped a foot off of my couch, it was closed,  the first time it ever fell it was doomed. The hinge popped up the casing to where it disconnected the power button from the cords inside.  Anyways, after I took that one to BestBuy and they told me to buy a new one because it was going to cost just as much to replace the casing, that's what I did. I bought the same exact laptop because I loved how big the screen was and I liked the shiny looks of it. My first impression when first opening both of them when new was that it felt like the plastic was cheap and a little wobbly from what It looked like online.&nbs... Read more

I've had this product for a little under 2 years. Today the fourth major problem with it occurred. The left hinge supporting the screen has come loose and is pulling away the base of the laptop. I can hear what sounds like cracking as I open the lid and a screw inside - moving around. I have treated this PC like a new-born baby so it is most defiantly a manufacturing fault. I?ve checked other threads and this problem has been apparent to countless other people with the same model PC. At almost £1000 I expect far higher quality from such a product. Had a known about these issue beforehand I would not bought it and I feel now I have been mis-sold the product as it is clear that it has a clear manufacturing fault with it. The fact that these products were not recalled for the faults with them is ridiculous. I would like to know what can be done about this in order to rectify the problem. Here is a link to the exact product details and an image below of the problem. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04356668 & http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/17-quot-HP-Envy-Coming-apart-at... I do hope that something will be done and I won't have to contact trading standards.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the plastic side rails and adapter required to be attached to a bare CD or DVD drive in order for it to fit in the Ultrabay and connect?  I have a bare Sony DVD RW replacement drive with the correct "notched" bezel.  I know most people just strip off the adapter and plastic side rails from an existing IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad CD drive and put them on the new drive.  But I was wanting a second set to I could keep both the T23's (a 2647)  DVD CDR original drive and the new DVD RW drive.

Life is just one big "Beta Test"Happy owner of a T43 (Windows 7) and T23 (Windows XP)

Answer:T23 - What are the plastic side rails & adapter needed for drives to fit in the Ultrabay?

I've never run into part numbers (i.e., FRU) for the Ultrabay rails and I've changed out my fair share of them.  What I basically do is buy "dead" or "parts" optical drives off of eBay and then scavenge the rails and IDE connector.  I believe that there are at least two very slightly different designs; the thickness of the side rails is what changes.  It's never gotten to the point where the re-fitted drive doesn't fit into the Ultrabay but, depending on the drive and rails in question, there may be too much or too little space inside the bay.  Also, you should be careful when transferring screws from one drive to another.  I've found that on some drives, if the rear screws (the ones which hold the connector on the back of the drive) are slightly too long, then that can prevent the tray from closing.

The warranty has ran out on my M6 laptop. A little over a year after it ran out, the left plastic hinge part of the frame began to crack and break due to the pressure caused by opening the laptop. While looking for replacement screen bezels online, I noticed that this was a common problem for this specific laptop. Is there a way around the expired warranty for this problem? I am having a hard time finding the replacement part, and I am afraid the same problem will just continue to happen again over time. Having the plastic part broken won't allow the screen to open without risking cracking the sceen. What are my options and who can I talk to? I'm a college student so this is sort of an inconvenience...My warranty ran out 9/10/2013 and it began breaking January 2015. Thanks

Hello,

I have a strange problem. I recently had to move my graphics card from one slot to another on my motherboard. When I did so, my desktop appeared to be shifted over to the left and that the left most part of the desktop would not display. I tried to use my TV controls to shift the display horizontally and when I did I encountered two issues- 1) the display would not adjust flush with the right side of the screen (would not reach it leaving a slim black bar) and 2) it looked like someone sliced off the left most part of my desktop (the part missing was a width so that about half the start/ windows button was missing).

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling CCC (latest update/drivers) for my ATI Raedon HD 46xx series card with no luck (Doing a registry sweep between to be thorough). I also have updated everything else windows with no luck.

My desktop is fine @50hz by the way, but 60hz is problematic.

And here is the whammy!

I took a screenshot of my desktop to send to a friend so he could see the left part cut off by a black bar and when I pasted it, the whole screen is there in the pic!!

So I assume this means that windows thinks it is displaying the screen but it is not making it to my TV?

I would have given up on this, however, it was working before so I know that it is possible.

Any help with this issue would be appreciated as I am starting to pull my hair out over here! :-)
Thanks in advance!

Daikon

Answer:Desktop shifted left and cutoff on left side Win7 64bit Raedon HD 46xx

There's this annoying white noise on my left speakers(Logitech X-540 Speakerset), though I think it's not my speakers that are causing it, but something else, because when I connect my iPod to my speakers there's no white noise.

So I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get rid of this noise

Answer:White noise on left speakers/left side of headphone

Sounds like either a driver malfunction or more likely a failing sound card. Most of the stuff below (Windows & Programs) wouldn't likely be causing problems. I'd be willing to bet it's a hardware problem (due to it only being one side).

Figure Out What's FailingIf you're using a secondary sound card
*** i.e. you have a second built in one on your motherboard, enable that.
If you still hear the sound on a different card, then it's something within Windows and not a problem w/ hardware.
If you don't hear the sound, then it's something w/ drivers or your hardware.
If you don't have an extra sound card, see if you can find/buy one Replace DriversDownload & Install a Program like Guru's Driver Sweeper
Uninstall your sound drivers w/ Driver Sweeper
Reboot
Download and install the latest drivers for your sound card.
RebootIf the sound is still there and you couldn't test a secondary card you're likely dealing with either a hardware failure (most likely with sound only happening in one speaker) or something in Windows failing.

Repair WindowsIf you want to try to fix windows, you can do the following:
Run an elevated Command Prompt and run this command:
sfc /scannow
Peform a system restore
Perform a repair install.Test to see if a program is causing the problemType msconfig into start menu search and hit Enter
Go to the startup tab and disable everything.
Restart computer
Do you still hear the sound?
Yes -- Not a program
No -- A program is likely causing the problem. If no... Read more

I've inherited a Dell Optiplex 7010 MiniTower, and the plastic slider on the top inside of the case that grabs the hooks on the side panel is missing.
This means that I have to use the locking hole in the back (with a short bolt and wing nut) to hold that panel in place.  Of course, the handle (having nothing to slide out of the way of the hooks) will do nothing.
I know how to insert a new one; the problem is: I can't seem to find it online anywhere.
Is this thing sold by Dell?

Hi there - I have an Aspire V5 touchscreen - when I went to close the lid, the screen cracked and I spotted that the left hinge has come apart (risen and cracked the screen). Now the laptop wont work (touch screen is flashing, mouse doesnt work - exactly the same issue as the other posts on this forum). I see on this forum and google search that this is fairly common with Acer laptops (going back to 2010) and wondering why this wasnt fixed. Has there been a recall on this, does anyone know?  I see from a google search that HP fixed a design flaw on their laptops to stop this from happening once it was reported, several years ago (2008) (I wish I had known about this problem before I purchased). If you google that you'll get the information. I've only had my laptop a couple of years. I take excellent care of my laptops, and never had this issue. (I dont travel with it, and dont close the lid often - it sits stationary on my desk and is only 2 years old).   I've sent emails out to my friends working in technology this afternoon - and so far no one has ever had this issue although no one has Acer.  Its a huge inconvenience as I use this laptop for work.  So I'm just waiting to hear back from Acer.Any suggestions on getting this fixed or replaced asap?

A friend and I purchased Dell Inspiron 15 5547 in August 2015 together. Within 5 months my friend's laptop's hinge got broken. Since it was in warranty Dell replaced it in 2 weeks. I didn't face any issue then. But since past few months I noticed a click sound when opening or closing the laptop. It didn't take time to figure out the right hinge of the laptop was defective and because of that the area near power button started popping out. I read several posts on similar issues with this laptop and was wondering if Dell will replace and fix it because of the manufacturing defect. The laptop is about 2 years old now. I'm currently using a paper clip to keep the things in place and not break it.

They told me that this is a damage happened on the laptop and I am not covered by accidental damage coverage. So I have to pay for this one to be fixed. I explained them that I’m using this laptop as everyone else does like opening a laptop to work on it and closing it when am done with my work. But no use, I was told this is beyond warranty I have to pay $160 and wait at least 12 working days to get it fixed.
As this problem has been faced by many customers and this is a manufacturing defect basically, dell should repair it for free.

Answer:Inspiron 5547 laptop right side hinge problem

I just spent $60 for a new upper and lower 5547 case which I will install myself; being that the laptop is out of warranty and I'm sort of adept at such things.  The problem is that of poor case design.  The hinge on the left side of the screen has a "leg" extending towards the front of the laptop that helps absorb the torque of the lid opening and closing.  The right side hinge has no such "leg" so that the screws that are embedded into the friction nuts in the plastic case work loose over time  and cause the hinge to detach from the body of the laptop.  Once detached, the right hinge acts as a pry-bar to open up the right side of the case just behind the ethernet port.  The hinges take quite a bit of force to move.  In preparation for the new case, I have loosened the nut at the ends of the hinge axles and cleaned and lubricated the hinges to allow for easier action while opening and closing the LCD lid.  This may be an ongoing maintenance issue with these hinges, as the mechanism is open to dust contamination causing increased torque over time in opening and closing the lid.  We'll see how this goes.

So recently, I received a blue screen of death. The error was something along the lines of:
page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

When it restarted, windows advised me to perform a system file check. So I left my computer for a bit, and when I came back it was already at the logon screen. However, when I logged on and started firefox, first thing I noticed was that all my bookmarks and some extensions had been wiped.
I then tried to start Microsoft Word but I received the following error:

"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect";

I receive that error for most of my other programs.

When I tried to run event viewer, it says:

"MMC could not create the snap-in"

Please help. Is it possible to restore my applications without reinstalling them all?

G'day everyone - I suspect this issue will be a tough one to get help with!

I've attached a screen-capture of a Microsoft Office Excel 2007 spreadsheet I'm working on at the moment. As you will be able to see on the screen-capture, I've marked the areas of interest and will explain here...

When I enter a name in this column (marked as '1'), I want the spreadsheet to check another column (marked as '2') to see if there is a match. If there is a match, I then want the spreadsheet to check the column marked as '3', and subtract that amount from the column marked as '4'. If there is no match between the column marked as '1' and the column marked as '2', I don't want anything to happen.

I hope that made sense, and if anyone can help me with a solution here, I would greatly appreciate it.

When trying to open a number of programmes including Microsoft Works Word processor is "application cannot be opened as side by side configuration is incorrect"

How do I tackle this please!

Answer:Error message: "application cannot be opened as side by side configuration is incorrect"

Hi

To be honest I never meet such problem with the operating system but firstly I would recommend trying to repair the OS.

Boot up the notebook and press F8. Then choose option called Repair the Computer.
Now you will see a some options. Here I would recommend choosing the first option called: Startup Repair.
This option automatically fixes problems that are preventing Windows from starting.
But I?m not quite sure if this is good enough to fix your issue with the system.

If this does not help I would recommend reinstalling this Microsoft Works package.

First post...

I am coming to you as a last resort. I built my own PC and installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit OEM edition. Has been working fine for ~2 years.
Now every time I attempt to open a program I get the error "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail".

The only progam that is barely working is IE 64 bit edition. I cannot download or run any files.

Microsoft wants 59$ to speak to a technical support representative(What a joke, multibillion dollar company wants extra $ for tech support??...).

Doing a ton of research I have tried various things to remedy this with no avail. System restore did not work. Doing a sfc /scannow in command prompt does not work, it does not even run. Wasted 3 hours of my life doing a thorough checkdisk as well.

The error in the event log is as follows...
Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.windows.c..-controls.resources_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.6001.18000_en-us_72e6f33f34dfabb9.manifest" on line 18. Invalid Xml syntax.

So the problem has to do with this manifest file? I really am clueless as to my next move. I can not download and run anything at all.... Can I do a Vista repair installation with my OEM version?

Should I try and get my hands on a cheap upgrade version of Windows 7?

With the introduction of the new and clever 'Snap' functions, two basic functions for organising the desktop seem to have been lost. I and others have tried asking the MS Community, but are struggling to find the vocabulary needed to ask the question, and are getting only non-answers.
So, I will try here..Questions:Noting that these very basic features have been available in all previous versions and editions of MS Windows:
1. How do I now, in W10, get two desktop app windows (DAWs) to share the desktop equally? This used to be achieved by having two DAWs active, and then selecting 'Show windows side by side'. Now, in W10, selecting 'side by side' results only in a cramped tiling of active windows.
2. How do I now, in W10, get DAWs to 'remember' their last setting of size and position, such that re-opened DAWs will open with the same size and position that they had when last closed?
3. Could someone give a direct answer to these two questions, providing the solutions as steps to be taken in W10 - or, will someone confirm that these features are no longer available, in W10?

Answer:Updated: W10 App Windows: 'Side by Side', & Setting Default Size/Position..

If you drag App1's title bar all the way to the left side of the screen, it'll "snap" to the left. The same for App2; drag the title bar all the way to the right side of the screen for it to "snap" to the right. (This can also be done using the keyboard short cut "Win + left/right arrow")
The old function for right clicking on the task bar and selecting "cascade windows, show side by side, etc" is still there, but now it allows for more open windows, and depends on your screen size.
As far as I can tell, open windows do remember their last position.

So, I had the same problem as above. I had developed a dll using Qt that worked fine on my machine but would not register on another. The familiar "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect..." appears when I ran the depencency walker on the dll.

So this was the solution that worked for me, which may help some others see what's going wrong here:

Within my dll the manifest emedded read:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0">
<dependency>
<dependentAssembly>
<assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.VC80.DebugCRT" version="8.0.50608.0" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"></assemblyIdentity>
</dependentAssembly>
</dependency>
</assembly>

It seemed that the assembly definition was not found upon my client computer. So then, from within my original computer's 'Windows\WinSxS' directory, I copied the 'x86_Microsoft.VC80.DebugCRT_1f...' directory and it's associated files within the 'Policies' and 'Manifests' directories onto the client computer. Once copied, the dll registrered fine.

Hope this helps...

I am trying to fix my friends computer which is having several weird issues. When you login everything appears to be normal but Windows loads to a black screen with a cursor. Ctrl + Alt + Del to task manager and I can run explorer.exe to restore the desktop. However the problem now is once your at the desktop all programs when you try to run them pop up with an application failed to run side-by-side configuration is incorrect. these problems are not apparent when the computer is ran in safe mode, but I can not figure out what to do. I checked the registry HKLM software windows nt logon and explorer.exe is the value.
Malwarebytes when ran in safe mode does not detect anything either.

Answer:windows logs in to a black screen, programs have side by side config

Some possibilities: this application failed to start because side-by-side-configuration is incorrect

Was this computer upgraded from Vista to Windows 7? If so that may be the cause. You can try doing a Repair Install of Windows 7 to see if that corrects the problem.

I have a spreadsheet that has nine columns. Once of these columns (the fourth column) is used for a single character as a method of immediately letting the user know that the row in particular is different to the others. So, there's nothing different about that at all.

What I'd like to be able to do, though, is to have the other eight columns (the three columns before the column mentioned above and the five after) all change their background colour when the single character is entered in the fourth column.

So, if the user inputs data in a new row and leaves the fourth column cell blank, nothing happens. If the user enters the symbol (let's say it's a "#"), then the nine columns will all change their background colour to red.

If anyone can help me with this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

This morning I came into my office to find my pc (p4, win7) apparently in a loop. the cpu usage was very high on all four processors, and the disk usage was high as well. I tried restarting the computer but there was so much cpu usage that I couldn't even type. So after 10 minutes or so, I just pulled the plug.

The first problem was that Norton Internet Security stopped working. After an hour on 'chat' with Symantec, they reloaded the software for me and now NIS is working properly. But I still have (at least) two probems. (1) My RIMDeviceManager fails with an 0xC015002 error, and all my MSOffice 2007 programs fail with "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect."

I unstalled all the Microsoft C++ programs and then did an MSOffice "repair" and it looks like C++ Redistributable (32 and 64-bit) were re-installed, but Outlook, Excel, etc, still get the same error. Everything I've read about fixing the problem is way over my head (and I'm fairly technical). Does anyone have a clue what I should be tracking down?

Re: Office 2007: The application has failed to start because the side-by-side config.

I've done some more checking and find that quite a few programs are failing to initialize because of this side-by-side thing: Adobe Premiere Elements and Adobe Photoshop Elements, Cyberlink Power Director 8, Microsoft LifeCam (no error, it just doesn't do anything), FormatFactory - there may be more, I haven't checked them all. Each program fails to initialize with the 'side-by-side configuration' error message. Please help!!

Hi,

Yesterday after installing a whole lot of updates my pop-up screen (e.g. when you click the left mouse button on your desktop) no go the left instead of the right from the cursors point of view. See image for example.

Who can help me with this slightly annoying problem?

Thanks in advance,
Hugo.

Answer:Pop-ups going to the left side?

Here you go. The 2nd tutorial was written for Vista, but works in Windows 7. It's also a lot easier than the 1st.

How to Set Windows 7 Menus to Open to the Left or Right Side
How to Change the Menu to Appear to the Left or Right of a Click in Vista - easier

By the way, if there's not enough room for the pop-up to open on the set side, it will still open on the other side. So, when that happens, it doesn't mean that the setting isn't working.
