Question: Compaq 6730b stucks on boot - screen "Press the ESC key for ...

Hello, when I turn on or restart my laptop (Compaq 6730b, OS Win7 64 bit), it begins to start, but after a few seconds it stucks on screen with HP logo and label "Press the ESC key for startup menu". After that begin to flash NumLock and CapsLock diods on laptop - maybe two or three times. But nothing happens, although I press ESC or any other key. Only I can do is to turn off laptop and try it again, sometimes many times on an on till OS starts properly. I have permanently plugged in many peripherals - external monitor, external keyborad, mouse, webcam, speakers and I have laptop permanently plugged in charger. Maybe this facts could be cause of the problem, i guess, because when I turn laptop itself without any peripherals, this problem didnt appear. I'll be very thankful for any advice to solve this unpleasant problem. Thanks a lot. Regards miiichal

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: HP Compaq 6730b

I installed Windows 7 x64 successfully both fresh installation and upgrade from Vista x64. All drivers installed but I didn't manage to get the fingerprint reader to work.

When I made a fresh installation, using the driver on AuthenTecs website for Win7 64, the Biometric Devices lists the device but marks it as unavailable.
If I use HP Protect Tools, it does not detect my fingerprint reader at all using this driver or the driver that comes with it.

When I ran an upgrade installation from Vista, HP Protect tools service did not run correctly and thus i was unable to log in at all.

Ideally I would like to use Authentecs drivers with 7's native support for biometric devices. If someone has managed with a model similar to mine, I would appreciate simple instructions or workarounds you may have used.

BTW: the fingerprint scanner model is AES2810

Answer:HP Compaq 6730b

Hi, xmun, and welcome to the forums.

I have a 2710p and my upgrade was flawless.

However, looking at downloads available for yours, I see a couple in particular that you may *not* have installed that are going to be critical:

HP Compaq 6730b Notebook PC*-* Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

Those are needed after Vista is upgraded to SP1 - specifically because of some of the files that SP1 changes.

Thus, it is safe to assume that W7 also changes at least some of the same files, and these updates (or at least some of them) are going to be necessary....

Question: HP Compaq 6730b

Configuration: W7 Ultimate SP1 Intel Dual Core P8600 @ 2.4Ghz Intel 4 Series Chpset Wifes laptop, 1 week old battery. I am an out of town Tech, will try "exercising " her battery in the next 10 days as she will be with me.  I have heard a new battery should be exercised, charge up, unplug run completely down, charge up a few times. Now the notification before the PC shuts down because of low battery does not work, it just shuts down, no notification. I checked the notification settings, and they look correct. I am a Tech Consultant w/4 years OTJ experience, and over 10 years PC exp, however thanks in advance for any advice.  Richard C. "Rick" Hilburn Quest TechnologyConsultant Tech

Answer:HP Compaq 6730b

Hi: I noticed on my HP notebooks that if I don't have the low battery notification set to 15%, I get the same problem. The notebook just goes into hibernate mode with no low battery notification. I seem to recall on several of my notebooks, that the default low battery setting is on 10%. So, see if changing the low battery notification to 15% if yours is set to 10%, gets the low battery notification warning to come on. Another issue could be that there is at least one bad cell in the battery if it goes say, from 30% to nothing. In that scenario, the low battery warning message won't work because it never gets to 15%.

My notebook has been 'blue screened' by the latest Windows 10 update. I can't believe Microsoft has broken my perfectly working laptop...I have been told I need to 'configure the bios' whatever that means, as when I turn my computer on it won't read the recovery file on my USB. Does anyone understand any of this? Thank you for any help.

Answer:hp compaq 6730b laptop freezes and slow down

Does it run ok with just the power adaptor plugged in and the battery completely out of the notebook? Does the battery charge ok if the notebook is turned off? Does the notebook run for a reasonable long time with just the battery?  I have seen this type of problem with a Toshiba machine that used a NEC/TOKIN 0E128 Proadlizer high switching frequency DC/DC converter output capacitor.  I doubt that your machine has this chip but the problem and the function are similar.  It is a surface mounted device and can cause the notebook to have varying problem with both the battery and the power adaptor connected at the same time.  Many times this will also allow you to charge the battery when the computer is off but not when it is on. Sometimes it will not allow your to run the notebook with just the power adaptor attached and the battery removed. Just food for thought.

I have a Toshiba Portege Z930-D3S laptop. I wanted to run a system recovery and did everything exactly as in the manual page 4-24, Section System recovery Options. The tool told me that the recovery partition is empty (or something like this) and the recovery cannot be performed. I definitely did not erase it and do not how it can be. Then there was an option to erase sdd and I thought that this might help (don't ask me why) and that the tool would erase everything but the recovery partition. So, I chose it.

Now I have the frozen screen with "Toshiba Leading Innovation" and cannot enter any menu neither by pressing 0, nor by holding F8. I cannon restart the laptop, it seems that it simply fall asleep when I press the power button.

Please, help me to recover the system.

Dear supporters,

Model: Satellite L775D-10W
OS: Win7 64 bit
Problem: The booting procedure gest stuck after "Windows loads data" and a progress bar undertitled with "Microsoft Corporation", resulting in a black screen and a moveable mouse cursor.

The same problem occurs everytime...
pressing F8 >> all options (icluding safe mode) >> boot gets stuck
Booting from Win7 64-bit DVD >> boot gets stuck
Booting from Win7 64-bit DVD >> all options >> boot gets stuck

Is it likely that the graphic card is broken or that the corresponding driver is not fitting anymore?

Thank you for your time in advance!

Answer:Satellite L775D-10W - Boot stucks: Black screen + mouse cursor visible

Graphic card problem might be possible but in such case the POST (power on self test) would not be passed and in my opinion it would not be possible to access the BIOS.

However, this is just a theory?
Try to boot the notebook using some Live CD like Linux

I would also recommend you to start the advanced boot menu. (pressing F8) and to choose Repair my Computer option.
Then choose ?Toshiba HDD recovery?

This option would recover the notebook back to factory settings.

I have an old Compaq Armada 3500 laptop that I bought years ago to help me through college. After that it kinda gathered dust a little until recently when I wanted to dig it back out and just use it to play a few games on and whathaveyou. It booted up fine when I first did it but it soon transpired that it was absolutely chocablock with viruses and spyware and it was running terribly.

So, on what now looks to have been a foolish move, I did a C: drive format in the hope of popping in a Win98SE installation disc and have it boot from that to re-install Windows.

However, now it won't boot up past the COMPAQ initial screen and a "602: Diskette Read Driver Error" or something keeps flashing up.

Is there any way to get into the BIOS settings to set the CD Drive as the first in the boot-up line-up, or are there recovery discs I can download that'll at least get me into DOS?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Compaq Armada 3500 Laptop Won't Boot Up Past Compaq Screen...

Well you should be able to access the CMOS Bios by using either the delete, F1 or F2 keys (sometimes f10). Then under the Bios you should see the Boot Sequence and be able to change it from there. But either way, you should be able to get past the Compaq splash screen. Try setting your boot sequence and see if that helps.

My laptop worked fine one day then the next it got stuck at the compaq screen. F10 key nor any other key will work. I have unplugged, taken out the battery and held down the power key to no avail. I do not even have the option to go to safe mode or any other screen. It does not sound like it is trying to boot and when I insert a disk it tries to run then it just stops. I have tried taken out the battery and just using the ac adapter and I have tried unplugging it and using just the battery; nothing. Any thoughts?? Oh i like your "Please take a look at those threads before you start a new one" suggestions - very quick.

However, no answer for me i'm afraid so perhaps someone can help.

I have a 6730b hp laptop that won't even get as far as POST.

I press the power button, the lights come on, but the only thing that then happens is the HDD light pulses about every 3 seconds. Try as i might i can't find support from HPs website on this.

My initial thought was RAM so i bought some more from crucial but upon removing the stick that was already in the laptop (under kb) and replacing it with the new one it made no difference - tried different slots also. I have since found that memory errors are shown with flashing caps and num lock lights so that's not my problem.

I can only think it's the m/b as i get nothing on the screen, no boot, no nothing, just this damn flashing light.

I took out the hdd expecting that if it was this, then at least i'd get to POST where the laptop would complain about no boot device, but the symptoms remain unchanged - just flashing hdd led every few seconds.

So i can't find what this error code means (thanks HP) and also on their website there is no doc i can find on how to replace the m/b, however i found a good generic link here :-

Does anyone have any advice please on anything else i can try? I've had the battery out, powered ju... Read more

Can you describe the flashing lights in more detail this is usually an error code that points to a certain device as you know, does this flashing correspond to pressing the power button and does it stop shortly after you've pressed the power button or is it continuous until the power is disconnected,if it isn't continuous how many flashes are there?

I can't believe this is an unsolvable issue...
my Studio XPS1340 isn't that old...
and my battery was replaced by warranty a little over a year ago...
it was charging fine...then suddenly, when I rebooted, I got:

WARNING: The battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery.Press Any Key to ContinuePress <F2> 2 times to enter SETUPPress <F12> and Any Key to enter Boot Menu
Do I just need to replace the battery?

Answer:WARNING: The battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery. Press Any Key to Continue Press <F2> 2 times to enter SETUP Press <F12> and Any Key to enter Boot Menu

I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. You can follow the steps below:
Drain the residual power of your computer and recaliberate the battery by following the steps below:

Power off your computer.
Remove all the external peripherals  (printers, scanners or any other USB device) connected to your computer.
Please remove the AC adapter and battery of your computer.
Press and hold the power button of your computer for 10-15 seconds to drain the residual power.
Release the power button
Keep the battery out for atleast 2 - 3 hours.
Then insert the battery and charge it overnight with the system powered off.
Insert the battery in and connect the AC adaptor.
Then power on the computer and see if it works.

If the issue still persists, you can update the BIOS of the computer.
Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

Click on the below link:
Click on “Download File”.
Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
Click on “Download Now”.
Save the BIOS on your desktop.
Once the BIOS is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

 Please reply with the findings.

I have an hp laptop model 6730B running windows XP pro.. I have two monitors attached to it through the dockign station
It works perfect.. I can set it to use both monitors or extend to the other monitor.. all perfect
But everytime the computer is switched off and on again.. it loses this setting and the display appears to clone similar on both screens.. so have to go on display settings and reset the display to "extend my desktop"

Any sugguestions???

Answer:Display settings for dual screen on laptop HP 6730B

Ok.. got the fix for that one:
The user was actually opening the laptop to switch it on instead of switching it on from the docking station's power button and then closing it which was defaulting to the setting of using the laptop screen as main monitor.

I was remotely supporting this client which is sometimes not easy.. lol

thanks anyways

I have reformatted the samsung internal drive , so it is unallocated right now. The main OS is installed in Hitachi.

I have attached a picture of the screen.

Hi. I'm running an Acer Aspire upgraded from Windows 8 to 10. If I just leave the screen with the subject content (above) I eventually get to logon to the computer; if I press [del] I get to the BIOS. Answer:Windows 10 boot gives me a black screen & 'Press [del] to enter setup'

Your hard disk must be set as the primary boot device. Not sure how it's set in the Acer BIOS, but most will say, Windows Boot Manager, so that must be the primary.

Maybe someone else may know around the Acer bios

Answer:No boot device available press f1 to retry press f2 for support?

It appears there is a problem with the hard drive. It's probably dead or dying. If you have data on it that you want to save, you could place it in a USB external enclosure or an inexpensive docking station (if a SATA hard drive) and try to access the files with another PC.

I have read the other threads asking the same/similar question, and they all seem to end in getting a new phone. Just wanted to see if there was any other advice which hasn't been suggested yet. A fast solution would be preferable; I don't really want to spend money / time on a semi-solution which may not even work.
Any tips appreciated though :)

Answer:How can I fix this error screen on boot up - unable to find a bootable option. Press any key to shut down?

A"new" phone is not needed, (changing the motherboard is needed). So send it for repair.
Or buy a 1020 with a cracked screen and replace your good screen on the phone with the cracked screen(but good motherboard).
Or sell your 1020 screen and buy a new phone.

I have a nearly 2 year old Compaq CQ56 laptop that has just quit working. I had been on for awhile, put the laptop down, did some errands without turning off the laptop. When I did come back to it the screen was black (as is usual) but wiggling mouse of tapping enter did not bring the screen up. I tried to start several times then took it to my neighbor to look at. He is a cash register programer and is decent with Windows. He hooked the laptop to an old monitor and it did nothing. Next he took the battery out, waited a few minutes, put battery back and voila... working laotop! I was estatic! It worked fine the rest of the night but when I tried to boot today it had the black screen again. Googled "CQ56 has black screen, doesn't boot, flashing cap lock" and found some repair tips. Did a "hard start" removed and changed around memory sticks, still no laptop. Found a "BIOS reset" tip here and tried that. Still nothing... and I really need this thing to work.
Screen has NO activity, on/off button lights, cap lock button blinks on - off... no pattern, Lan button comes on. I can hear a whirring sound like it is booting and you can hear a soft running noise so something is coming on. I have no idea what is going on. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?

My computer was working fine this morning, I didn't download anything or do anything different, just normal web searching. As I'm loading a web page, the computer freezes. I Cntrl Alt Dlt and nothing, so I turn off my computer and turn in back on, it reboots to the Win screen where you sign in as an identity, I enter my password and it freezes. Again, I have to reboot the computer manually, and it freezes at the Compaq screen that comes on when you first turn on the computer. I turned off the comp, opened it, removed my fan, blew it out a bit, removed the processor and reseated it (in the process, reseated it incorrectly and bent a far corner prong, attempted to straighten w/tweezers, and ultimately BROKE it off...DOH!). I wasn't sure if the broken prong would have a big effect, so I reseated it correctly, reseated my memory, and tried again, same thing, just hangs at the Compaq screen. At this point, I don't know if it's still just the same problem it was having intially, or if the broken prong on the processor is now a problem as well. Is there anything I can try short of replacing the processor. I thought maybe the prong could be resoddered (sic) to the processor, but I'm told no such luck. Can anyone please, please help? Switch on the computer, press and hold the "F12" key while the Toshiba logo appears.
Alternative you can press and hold the "0" key to access the recovery option.
Choose "HDD Recovery" and confirm by selecting "Yes" that you want to enter the system recovery.

Before going to the expense of a new motherboard, try re-installing Windows first (either from a Vista installation DVD or Factory Recovery). If it won't install or run properly after that, I suspect you need a new m/board.

I recently sent my laptop (Equium A300D-13x) back to Toshiba to be repaired as it was overheating and cutting out.

It came back today and when I turned it on I got the screen where I was asked if I wanted to go into safe mode or start Windows normally.
Then it goes to a screen where it says, *Finishing the installation may take several minutes.

Please do not interrupt or shutdown the computer!*

I've been waiting all day now and I'm still stuck on this screen.

Has anyone had the same problem? And if so, how can I fix it?

Answer:Equium A300D-13x stucks on installation screen

I?ve recovered my notebook many times and the installation went always troublefree.
But of course such installation issue could happen always and I think you should simply repeat this procedure.

If you don?t have Toshiba Recovery disk then try to recover the notebook using the HDD recovery option.
Just press F8 while notebook powering up.
Then choose ?Repair my computer?. Then a new window will appear and you could select the new option called Toshiba HDD.

Check it out!

Ok. Trying to fix a friend's computer, and seem to have run into a rather strange snag.  Problem:  The computer will not boot past the bios screen. Details:  When you power on the computer, the compaq logo with intel inside shows up and has the <F1 Setup> and <F10 System Recovery> options listed as well.  And this is about as far as the computer gets.  After this the whole computer is just locked up, no buttons work on the keyboard no lights come on the keyboard ect ect.  I've tried mashing on the F1 key as soon as I power on the computer and I can manage to get it to say *entering setup* but it still freezes after this point.  I've already tried eliminating possible sources of problem, all expansion cards removed, HDD and Dvd Rom disconnected, single memory module (256mb ddr 2700), only power, vga, and keyboard connected.  Ive also used the jumper on the motherboard to clear the cmos hoping that would solve the problem, to no avail.  I've tried using a different stick of memory and different memory slot as well...  Tried using both a ps2 and a usb keyboard... Ive even tried pulling out the jumper for the bios password protection (even though it didn't have a password on it, just trying anything I can think of).  The installed bios version is 3.1, and that is about all I know about the computer at this point, other than what the website tells me of it. Try clearing the CMOS again but this time remove the CMOS battery and hold the power button in for a few seconds. Then replace the battery and try booting up again.  On the back of the pc is the PSU condition led green or flashing?

I have a new Compaq SR1520NX computer with windows XP and 512MB.
At startup, the Compaq boot screen ( boot, setup, system recovery) options. appears and hangs there for 4 minutes before windows welcome screen loads.
I have tried using msconfig and went through and unchecked everything, just to see. Still have same problem. I contacted HP, however they could offer no help. Anyone out there that can please help with this???

Run System Restore, which enables the system to go back to a date before U had a problem. Everyone forgets about the most popular fix. Is simply running System Restore, which seems to undo just about anything for most folks.

Try running the Windows System File Checker (SFC)
Instructions: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
If that doesn't help, try doing a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download
Note: Uncheck the checkbox at the end of the installation titled "Enable free trial of Malwarebytes PRO"

Hello all,

I recently decided to upgrade the Memory in my lovely laptop.
I went online, found suitable RAMs and ordered.

What i got are 2 of these:

Installation is very easy, but as soon as i turn on my laptop, it stucks in a black screen with a white underscore upright.

I guess its a incompatibility problem ?
Could you please help me out?

Thank you.

Answer:Satellite L675-10T stucks in a black screen after new RAM upgrade

I think you are right? it looks like the modules are not fully compatible even if the online dealer page says they are?
You can remove the new RAM modules just to check if the notebook would boot up properly? I guess the unit will power up correctly?.

Solution??? Use another RAM modules? I made good experience using Kingston modules? they could be a little bit expensive but I think they should work properly.

Four days ago I installed BB flashback software but due to some problems I had to uninstall it and the installation didn't complete. After that day, whenever I open my Toshiba Laptop the windows vista boots normally but stucks at 'please wait while your system is preparing' screen. After waiting for a long time, I opened task manager, ended that running screen and then my laptops works just fine. I don't know what's that. I tried system restore many times but it always ends up unsuccessful. Later on I even installed BB flashback successfully and a new anti-virus AVG, but the problem persists. Any idea and any suggestions please???

I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.

On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.

When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.

I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.

I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.

I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.

I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

I have a Satellite Pro C850-1FN and for some reason it gets stuck in a Preparing automatic repair screen on bootup. It will sit with the text on the screen and then after about 8 minutes a blue screen will show talking about a problem and then the PC re-boots.

The cycle is then continued.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Answer:Satellite Pro C850-1FN stucks in Preparing Automatic Repair screen

It looks like the automatic repair isn?t possible.
Did you try another option ? HDD recovery?

The HDD recovery procedure would start new system as well as driver installation and would set the notebook back to factory settings.

I think if system repair isn?t possible, your next step should be the HDD recovery.
In case the HDD recovery would not work too, then you should use the Recovery disk.

I'm trying to reformat the hard drive on our 2nd computer, and I have properly changed (and saved) the BIOS settings for Boot priority to "CD/DVD". In fact, I disabled all other choices for 2nd and 3rd priorities, etc. All the tech support/instruction articles I've found tell me I've succeeded here if I get the line "Press any key to boot from CD", which I have. However, when I press a key, in a moment it starts Windows up just like always, instead of giving me the blue screen.

The CD seems fine. I checked it from within windows, and the computer reads it correctly, and when I click on Setup, it brings up the menu of installation options, just like I want it to from the blue screen. Its just that I can't get to that point after the "Press any key..." part in the boot process.

What am I missing here?

Answer:"Press any key to boot from CD" then still goes to Windows instead of blue screen..??

Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LED’s stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. That’s what happens when on battery power.

When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.

I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on….simply nothing.

I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.

Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.

Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC

There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Answer:Compaq Presario 6150b wont boot - no BIOS screen - powers on and off repeatedly

I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz

My Compaq Armada 3500 won't boot past COMPAQ logo. It wont boot to Floppy or CD and I cant enter BIOS to change any settings. I have 2 of these laptops (I bought them both used). My other one had the same similar problem when I got it, but I fixed by removing the cmos battery for 30 minutes and rebooting after I put it back in without the HD in the case. It told me error 162 options not set, and date and time had to be reset, and to hit F1 to save the settings. I did and rebooted. It booted to my floppy Win98 boot disk fine, and then I put in a COMPAQ setup for portables and a DIAG floppy and set it up to boot to multi boot. It runs like a charm now for its size.
But the other one will not accept any of these options although it does tell me the same message after I remove the CMOS battery and put it back in as I did the other one. But when I reboot, it still doesnt see the floppy, CDROM or let me boot to bios to enter setup. It just shows the COMPAQ logo and says "non system disk, remove the disk and hit a key when ready." I have removed the hard drive, removed the CD ROM, and removed the floppy on seperate occasions to see if any of them were the problem, but no change. I took the whole thing apart, and put it back together hoping something would end up being connected to the problem, but it still doesn't change the problem. Next to selling it for parts, any ideas? Its in great shape, has a nice 13 inch lcd and good floppy and cd-roms, and 192 ram.

New to this forum, sadly my laptop won't boot....I'm hoping I can get some insight here.
I get the black screen with the following messages:
"PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
No boot device found. Press any key to reboot the machine."

I can get into BIOS and run diagnostics followed by the prompt: "Success, all tests pass.".....but system won't boot.
I searched and searched the internet and tried various things but no change.
I removed and reinstalled the hard drive twice, no change.
I made sure the HDD is first to boot order in change.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would certainly appreciate it.
Thank you in advance.

Press F12 at powerup - boot to the Dell diagnostics and run an extended test on the hard drive - this will take a couple of hours (not just the 10 min or so the quick test did).  It'll likely show a bad drive.

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

the Advanced Options.

Answer:Compaq Presario SR1810NX Not Getting Past Compaq Logo Screen

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

I have an XPS 8500 that will not boot normally. It was running fine and all of a sudden came up with the message "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key". I have figured out if I go into BIOS first the PC will boot up but is very slow in doing so. I googled the issue and found something telling me to default the BIOS. I did this and it booted once. Trying to decide if the HD is out. I ran diagnostics and it does not see a HD. But if that's the case why does it even boot after going into BIOS. I am running Windows 10 Pro. So, I'm using a burnt CD-R of windows XP w/ SP 2 I downloaded from MSDNAA. This is actually the second copy burnt from the same iso. I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, so that's on the MBR, and there is about 50 gigs of unpartitioned space sitting on the primary hard drive. My combo drive is IDE, my hard drive is SATA, and my motherboard uses the P35 chipset.

Now, to the actual problem. I pop in the disk, set the first boot device to be the optical drive, it gets to the "Press any key to boot from CD...." message. I press a key. Nothing happens. A few details on what exactly "nothing" is: In contrast to when you don't press any key, no more trailing .'s occur. However, the cursor keeps blinking, so the system is totally hung. But there are no noises, nothing new pops up on the screen, etc. Nothing happens.

I'm thinking the ISO may be bad (though I did directly download it from microsoft), but I've also heard of people unable to install specific versions of windows from not being able to boot from the CD under similar conditions.
Anyway, any help you could provide would be very much appreciated.

Hi There!
I am having a problem starting my PC! I have to start it in the boot menu under the RAID option. If I do not do this a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.." comes up, and just keeps popping up regardless of what I press! I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!
I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least. So my boot sequence is as follows:
Boot 1: (Hard drive)
Boot 3: USB: Generic-Compa
Boot 4: Lan

I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu. But I truly have no idea how to change that. Which brings me here.
If anyone can offer any help to this, I would greatly appreciate it.

HiYou will have to give a little more information. What is the make and model of the computer? If it isn't a brand name what make and model of the motherboard.Or you can post a Speccy that will give that information.[ Go to Piriform's website, and click the big button.

Next, click Download from (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version.

You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.
After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):
Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot

You will see the following prompt:
Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Congrats! You have just posted your specs!... Read more

Anything happen lately that might cause a hard-drive failure, or is there a optical disc in its' drive? The message indicates that it can't find a bootable device. Normally the hard-drive may be set first, but if there's a non-bootable CD/DVD in it's drive, and the optical-drive is set to boot first, the "insert boot disk & press any key" message appears. If that's not the case, then it appears your HDD could be failing or has already failed."Channeling the spirit of jboy..."

I bought a Caviar SE16 Serial ATA drive from Western Digital(SATA II).And all i got was this lousy message when i started up my PC.My mobo is an Intel D946GZISSLIt only supports SATA but i didnīt think i would have a problem since the drive is backwards compatible with SATA.

I got the utility called Data Lifeguard Tools from the makers website and burned it to a CD and tried rebooting with that to see if my disk was kaput but i couldnīt boot from the cd either. Now iīm not sure if i burned the DLT right or something but iīm pretty sure i couldnīt boot from the cd either when i tried with the Windows XP Cd.And that cd works fine.

The bios i just donīt understand whatīs going on.I checked to see if it detected my drive and it appears to be detected as SATA 1 or something.Master and Slave say nothing is installed.I tried changing the boot order but i doesnīt seems to change anything.

Gonna try tomorrow booting with the Data Lifeguard Tools form a floppy disk. But first i would love to have some kind of advice first because my Pc case is a bit small( microatx) and i have to remove my dvd drive and videocard to reach the Hardrive.

Thanks for the help and sorry for my bad english and poor grammar.

I have a Satellite U50D-A and when I turned it on thismorning it starts on the "Toshiba leading inovation screen" with Preparing Automatic Repair written on the bottom. I've googled it but everyone else has the same problem but stuck in a loop...mines just frozen on that first screen. Now been 9 hours and am starting to doubt it will automatically repair

Hello tech,
It's easter, so I realise some helpers might be away and help might be a bit slow as well as answers from me until Tuesday, lol.

I got a problem, driving me up the wall for four days now.
I use a developer program to make executables (hobby of mine saves me going troppo) called Clarion, it works OK, I made a DOSable program with it, it works OK.

Once I could open to full size DOS screen by pressing the Alt+Enter keys and it would stay open until I was finished with it, then I could revert back to a small screen by pressing Alt+Enter keys again.

Now if I press Alt+Enter keys the DOS screen appears, but it stays open in full screen for a couple of seconds then automatically closes back to the usual small screen.

I have tried right clicking on the icon, properties, screen and putting a dot in the full size option, but this does not work.

I have scanned my PC for viruses etc but no joy there.
I have Dialup only, so don't ask me to do a Panda or Trend scan as they drop you if you no got broadband.

I'm using XP pro, 512meg ram, using a Gigabyte MB, and Nivida video card.
XP working OK-dokie, sound ok-dokie, video ok-dokie, screen to DOS wonkie.
OK what do I do now

Answer:I press Alt+Enter DOS screen.opens 2 full screen then go small in a couple of seconds

You can download PowerCmd and use CTRL+ENTER to test its full screen mode.

My laptop is able to boot up normally. But when I want to log in to my account, it stucks at "Loading your personal settings" screen. I waited for quite sometime but it is still stuck there and my profile is not uploaded. I tried many times. But discovered I am able to log in to administrator account and use it without problems. I had even done a system restore but it does not solve the problem. It was working fine till now. I had this problem before and had to reformat it. But I do not want to. Is there any way to solve this problem? Please help. I really need to access to this account.

Answer:Screen stucks at "Loading your personal settings". HELP please!!!

If you can log in to the administrator account then you should be able to resolve this.Log in as the admin, then openC:\Documents and Settings\your.usernameSelect Tools > Folder Options > View Select "Show hidden files and folders"This folder contains all the information relating to your account. For the time being, you can access files this way.To resolve the problem, I would try renaming the folders in C:\Documents and Settings\your.username one at a time. Then log off, and try logging on Rename "Application Data" to "Application Data Old"Log off administratorLog on as your.usernameIf this failsLog on as administratorRename "C:\Documents and Settings\your.username\application data old" back to C:\Documents and Settings\your.username\application dataRepeat this process for each folder.

Hi  Edgarlee,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system stuck at Lenovo logo.
As per your query, please disconnect all the external devices and try to power on the system, try to boot to BIOS and check for the issue.
If you are able to boot to BIOS, try to load the BIOS default setting and check for the issue.
If you are not able to boot to BIOS then please perform a power drain by disconnecting all the external devices connected to the system, also remove the battery and shutdown the machine and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds and now connect adapter and battery and try to power on the system and check for the issue.

...but I can't now because I scheduled a disk check that gets stuck during 27%. D:

How it all began:
My younger brother plays games a lot (he has been experiencing frequent BSOD crashes, too).
According to him, one day it just won't boot (a blank black screen shows up), and he had to press F12 (network boot, and I do not even know what that is but it works).
From there, I scheduled a disk check and thus I rebooted. The progress however, gets stuck at 27% D:
Also, I can't skip the disk check. It doesn't give me a 20-second time to press any key to skip it.

What I tried:
Inserting my installation DVD in my external DVD drive but it won't work. The drive led light blinks and I can hear the drive trying to read it, but I think it can't (DVD drive doesn't show up on boot menu). Works perfectly here on my netbook, though.

Restarting and booting on the HDD, or pressing F12 brings up the Automatic Repair which says it could not load Windows properly and asks me to do a system restore.

More information:
Once I witnessed the blue screen (it's the one with the sad emoticon, right?)
and I remember the words: driver_irql etc., etc...

Help, please?

Answer:Cannot boot Windows 8 Pro x86 unless I press F12 (network boot)...

After 9 hours of wait without getting any reply, I suppose nobody can help me D:
I finally found the solution.
I'm gonna put my Windows 8 installer on my USB and make it bootable, since my optical drive isn't being recognized by Windows anymore (I've seen many on the net that has this problem, too).

But I still need your help, because I don't know what to do from there. >.<

I have a HP G60, and i insert a CD with a ISO file that worked on a other PC, I pressed F9, I press the option Boot from CD and It's starts booting regular, I placed it to be the first to boot but nu result

Answer:When I press boot from CD, It boot hard drive

Did this ISO work on XP previously or was it also a win 7 system?.........The computer will check the cd for a bootable system, if it does not find one it carries on through the boot order in your case to the hard drive. Perhaps the ISO does not work on Win 7, or perhaps you have a 64 bit o/s and the ISO works on 32 bit only.....or the ISO disk has become corrupted...scratched what have you. My best guesses on that.

Pc is equipped with 340 Intel Celeron D processor, Win XP. 512 mb RAM and 80 GB hard drive.

Was installing a wireless keyboard and mouse, Logitech Wave. After following instruction on connecting keyboard and mouse, started to install the cd software from Logitech. System froze, waited 15 minutes and attempted to restart. Unable to Cntrl, Alt Delete. Manual shutdown, on restart, computer goes to Compaq screen but will not allow access to F1, F8, Esc or F10 to restore. Unplugged the wireless keyboard and did another manual restart with the PS2 keyboard connected. Same response, have tried another PS2 keyboard, same response. Also used wired mouse to no effect.

I have inserted Win XP cd rom hoping to boot from that but no effect. I am stuck, does anyone have a suggestion since I can't get into restore or safe mode, I don't have a clue.

Answer:compaq pc boots to compaq screen...

Hello sb6204

I am not clear if any keyboard and mouse work.

If they do, try a system restore

Boot into Safe Mode Options Screen (the one with Last Known Good Configuration on it) by pressing F8 at bootup and choose
'Safe mode with command prompt'

At the command prompt type

Hopefully this will open System Restore, so restore to before you installed Logitech

Since the latest update (It introduced the slide show of pictures on the lock screen. I think it is KB3124200) I haven't been able to press Enter or Space or any other key for that matter to "slide up" the lock screen photo to get to the password screen. I've looked through the lock screen settings, but I see nothing that could prevent this. Does anyone know why this is and a possible fix for it?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Not able to press keyboard to get from lock screen to password screen

Okay, I think I've figured out a solution.

What I did was right click the desktop and choose "Personalize", then choose "Lock Screen" and switch "Show Windows background picture on the sign-in screen" to "Off".

I have no idea as to why this would change anything, but it did solve my problem, and I don't need the Windows logo background, so I'm happy!

Hope this help

I have two questions: 1. Can I upgrade the RAM memory of my laptop (initial Ram 2Gb) by adding a 2Gb Ram memory? 2. What type of RAM should I choose to be compatible with the original RAM memories?  Thanks

Answer:upgrading HP 6730b laptop

Here's the Service Manual which you might find useful: Manual It can actually take up to 8 gigs of RAM, but it uses DDR2 laptop memory which is very expensive for 4 gig modules. So your most cost-effective upgrade is to install 4 gigs, which is much less costly.  2048-MB 483194-001 Not sure if it has 2 x 1 gig or 1 x 2 gig right now, likely the latter. Note in the Manual the memory is in two locations: a primary module under the keyboard which in your case is likely the 2 gig module and then an expansion slot on the bottom of the laptop which will allow adding an additional module. You should only have to open the expansion bay. See p. 57 of the Manual. Post back with any more questions.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

My Lenovo U410 stucks at the Lenovo Logo screen with the white dots, after a few minutes the screen goes blank and the same process of stucking at the lenovo logo screen continues. Some time this goes a bit further and stucks at the screen with "Reparing Drive 100% complete". But the laptop never boots with windows 8, it either stucks with lenovo logo or the Reparing Drive screen. Any idea whats going wrong, or any ideas to solve the problem.

Answer:Lenovo U410 Stucks at lenovo screen

Tried to boot with the DVD consisting of windows 8, strangley even if I change the boot order to the CD Drive, The laptop doesn't boot with the CD drive it still tries to boot from the Hard Disk. Also tried selecting to boot from the CD Drive after pressing fn + F12 after powering on the laptop, But strangley the laptop still tries to boot from the hard disk only. Then I have changed the Boot Mode in BIOS to the Legacy mode from the UEFI mode and the boot priority to legacy first. Then the laptop boots from the Cd drive. Why is this, Is it required to set the boot mode to legacy for booting from the external CD drive...?

hi there, this post was a bit similar to one last august .. when i try and load a win 7 or vista c.d. the same things happen on 3 different units, a sony vaio laptop, a dell 1750 laptop and a dell optiflex desktop. here it is. i have wiped the hard drive formatted using a piece of softwere. i reconnect hard drive and insert disc and start up . the installation goes all the way through then comes up with " finishing installation" the pc wil reboot . when it reboots for i think should be the last time, the message about " press any key to boot from c.d. or dvd" comes up. then a few dots appear then it freezes and thats it. just a few more things, i have tried all of the 3 p.c.'s loads of times and i have changed the boot order but nothing, i can see that the memory has been used as 4gb approx is being shown , used from blank 140g. the disc must be ok because i only used a month ago and all went fine.i even tried an old xp disc and the same thing happened.
well i know this is prob a walk in the park for you guys and i would like to thank you for reading my post...cheers tg

Answer:press any key to boot

Reduce the installed RAM to 2GB or less, see if it boots then?
