Campus Wifi works fine, but Ethernet doesn't

Question: Campus Wifi works fine, but Ethernet doesn't

Hi, I am currently using the University campus wifi which works fine, but when I try to connect to it via ethernet, it always comes up with "no internet access" despite the wifi working fine. If I go onto network and sharing centre, the ethernet is sending bytes but only receiving very few every so often. I am using windows ten, please feel free to ask for more information, thanks for helping

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all.
First of all, I want to thank you guys in advance for putting your time and effort to solve my issue. any answer would be grateful to me.

My internet provider is At&t and as I mentioned in the title, wireless internet works perfectly fine, but Ethernet connection doesn't work on my desktop. Currently I am using wireless adapter on my PC, and it works just fine. I tried disabling the wireless connection, resetting the modem, re installing the Ethernet driver and anything I can think of.

The odd thing is that my brother used Ethernet connection just fine with his desktop about three weeks ago, with same router and same cable. So I am assuming that my computer is the one with the problem but I can't figure it out why.

I'm going to try out the different cable tomorrow, but I highly doubt it will fix my problem.

Help me guys. If you need any other information, ask away. I will give it to you as much as I can

Attachment file is my network and sharing center status unidentified network is my ethernet connection

Answer:Wireless works fine, Ethernet doesn't

Odds are that the NIC has failed.

Another low possibility (in addition to cable and router LAN port) are the PC's firewall or security suite misconfigured or corrupted.

Another thing to try: in Device Manager right click on the ethernet - Properties - Advanced tab - for the 'Speed & Duplex' property try different values beginning with '100 Mbps full duplex' and '10 Mbps full duplex.'

Hi

I have a ZyXEL 600 wireless router - it has worked without issues for years.

However yesterday evening my wireless router suddenly stopped broadcasting a signal.

2 different PC's and a wifi dongle attached to our TV were suddenly all unable to find my network.

The WLAN light on the router was still lit up. I connected my Acer Aspire 5742Z laptop to the router via an ethernet cable and it worked fine. I connected to the router and it said there were no errors.

I phoned ZyXEL support this morning and they dialled in, confirmed the router was reporting it was working. They installed inSSIDer on my PC and verified no signal was being picked up - but other local wireless networks were being picked up.

They suggested buying another modem as it was very old and could have just reached the end of its life.

So I bought a brand new Sitecom 300N x2 modem this morning, connected it up and have the exact same problem. All the right lights are on the modem (solid WLAN, DSL and Internet lights), I can connect via an ethernet cable but none of my devices can find a the wireless browser (but can find other networks and connect to them).

I've spent hours on the phone today to various tech people and gone through channel switching, changing encryption etc but nothing has worked. The router is sat in the same place it has been for the last 3 years and the laptop is inches from it but still no joy.

As far as I can see I've ruled out:

I have recently bought a router, the Fritz.Box Home Server 1&1 VDSL. I have set it up via wifi and can connect to the internet without a problem.
However, I would like to connect my PC to the router via LAN.
When I put the LAN cable into my PC and the router, both my PC and my router react and tell me there is a connection but they do not recognize each other. The router says there is something in LAN1 and the PC says there is a LAN cable without a connection. I cannot access the router via LAN, only via wifi.
My PC uses the Killer Network 2200e driver, I tried removing it and then manually adding it again, it did not work. My IPv4 settings seem fine, too, I have no idea what to do now.

You can download them from here or install them from the d drive.http://support.lenovo.com/en_IN/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS033356Also if it does't fixes the issue, could you open the device manager and check if there is any unknow device or a device with a yellow triangle on the icon of any of the network device? i mean is there a ethernet driver installed. Also, check the ethernet cable, it might be at fault too. Try with another cable too.Regards

Answer:Ethernet won't connect to router, wifi works fine

and welcome to the Forum

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found, here's how

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type or copy and paste the following command:

ipconfig/all > 0 & notepad 0

and press enter.

Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

So here is my story. A couple days ago I awoke to having no internet access over any devices connected through Ethernet or Wifi. My first thought was it was just a fluke and to power cycle my router and modem. After doing so I still got nothing. Called up my ISP thinking that the internet might be down due to a winter storm we had that night. They said that it wasn't. They sent signals to my modem and everything appeared to be working properly.

My equipment then:

Arris SB6141
Asus RT-AC3200

So I decided to make a run to Best Buy (not my first choice but convenient) to pick up a new cable modem. Purchased a Arris SB6190. Got it home, called up ISP (Spectrum) and had them provision it. Everything went smooth. Well now I was getting internet but only over WiFi. So now I'm thinking that my router bit the dust. Took another trip to Best Buy and purchased a Linksys EA9500 router. Got home, hooked it all up, same exact thing. Wifi works but everything connected through Ethernet has no connection.

I have a Win 7 system. Everything was working, until a few days ago, and then the Ethernet connection stopped. The activity LEDs work, but the Ethernet will not connect. The Wifi works fine through the same router as the Ethernet is plugged into.

Here is what I did so far.Rebooted PC (full power cycle)
Rebooted router
MSCONFIG to disable all unknown services and apps
Replaced Ethernet cable
Tried a different port
Confirmed Ethernet driver is latest version
Deleted Ethernet driver anyway and reinstalled
Reset IP Stack
Set TCP/IPv4 to static IP and defined the DNS server
Confirmed the adapter's advanced settings were correct
Connected to a USB Ethernet adapter that I know works (and has worked before on this PC)

Nothing I did in the above list worked - Ethernet does not connect. The activity LEDs are working. The Network Connections shows a plugged-in Ethernet as an Unidentified Network.

Here is the IPCONFIG/ALL

My PC with windows 7 is the only computer with issues in the house. Ethernet works perfectly but wifi doesn't even when I don't have the ethernet hooked up. The wifi says it is connected but browsers, steam, and Itunes don't work. I have Bitdefender A/V and already tried uninstalling it, no change. I also uninstalled steam and Itunes with still no change. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the wireless adapter. I tried looking and I don't recall downloading or installing anything around the time the problem started. Before I try replacing the adapter itself, I was hoping for help here since I saw a very similar problem in another thread.

Hi! After moving to a new home, I'm having trouble getting a wired connection working. Same modem and router as the previous home, same PC. Different ISP, but both are Shaw cable re-packagers.

I have only a PC and an android connected, occasionally and android tablet as well.

The PC can connect via wifi, if ethernet is disabled and then modem, router, PC restarted, but I can't seem to figure out a way to get the ethernet connection to work. I've tried DHCP and Static IP configurations, and I've tried connecting the ethernet directly to the modem instead of the router, but to no avail. I believe I've managed at times to access the router from the PC (only with static IP), but never the internet as well. I've tried 3 cat 5 cables as well.

Here are some pictures with more details of my config

I just moved and have been trying to get my PC connected to the internet at my new place. I have a Dlink AC750 dual band wireless router, and my computer has no problem connecting to it wirelessly. However I cannot figure out how to connect directly by ethernet. I have a cable running from the router to the back of the PC, but the icon in my tray just says 'No connections are available'. I have also tried connecting directly to the PC bypassing the router. Everyone I have spoken to, including tech support, has told me that you "plug it in and it just works". Am I missing some step in getting my PC to recognize the ethernet cable?

Answer:WiFi works, ethernet doesn't

Hello mate have you tried updating the LAN driver for that machine and even simpler a new cable??

I've been having a problem of late where my ethernet connection has been unable to gain internet access and reportedly shows the network as being 'unidentified'. It will be unable to connect for a long period during the day and then regains access.

However, if I connect my USB Wifi adapter, it picks up the network immediately and internet connection isn't a problem.

This is the ipconfig /all whilst both USB Wifi and ethernet cable are connected.

Running Win 8.1 on Lenovo Y410p. Verizon FIOS router, Actiontec MI424WR (Actiontec[1] ).
Everything was running fine until last night. No internet when I connected to the router with an ethernet cable, but the wifi still works. I ran windows troubleshooting diagnostic and it said ETHERNET DOESN'T HAVE A VALID IP. Restarted my laptop and the router, changed ports, got a new ethernet cable, tried hooking up another laptop, still nothing. It shows up as Unidentified Network with No Internet Access. Xbox is also connected to router via ethernet, that isn't working either. The wifi is working but it's shoddy, every few minutes it'll lag, Chrome will go into NOT RESPONDING mode for a second or 2 and then go back to working. Wifi is also prone to dropping out and coming back at times.
Please advise.

Answer:Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP, wifi still works?

Power cycle your ISP Modem, router and computer(s).

Power all off
Remove power from modem and router for 30 seconds or so.
Connect power to modem, wait for it to finish booting and stabilize
Connect power to router, wait for it to finish booting and stabilize
Power up computer with Ethernet cable already connected

If still not working: collect IP configuration information as follows:

Open a Elevated Command Prompt:

Press WIN + X to open Start context menu.
Select Command Prompt (Admin).

Paste the following into the Command Prompt window, exactly as shown, including double quotes:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" | find /i "proxy" >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close. Paste the information in a reply here.

Hi, this my first time posting and I really would refrain from bothering people if I could, but I've been having this issue with my wireless for the last month so I thought perhaps someone could help.

The OS is a Windows XP home.

I go into IPCONFIG/ALL and it tells me that my wireless is disconnected

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.
I've tried going into the router (it's a NETGEAR MR814) IP, and I've added it to the list of devices that can connect to it, but it's not working. It just... won't work. It's not that there's a security lock on my router because I've disabled it and it still wouldn't work.

So now I'm completely befuddled, and disheartened, and on the verge of just taking apart my machine were it not for the ethernet connection. Can someone please help?

Answer:Ethernet works fine, Not Wireless

First try going into network property and see if you can see it.
If you see something like "Local Area connection 2" with wireless network card, right click on the icon and view available network/connection.
If you see your wireless router setting, highlight and click "Connect".

I'm sure this has been asked 1000 times but I cannot seem to find my exact issue anywhere. Hopefully this helps myself and anyone who runs into this issue.

To start, I have Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Everything worked 100% fine with absolutly no issue and then.... I moved. Now we have Fios instead of Comcast.

Now to the issue. When I have the ethernet connected I cannot get internet access but I have full network access. I went out and purchased a new wirless card and wirless works just fine. I tested 2 different cables, recrimped both of them and nothing. I have activity on the PC and the Router so I am sure they are good.

I have tried everything I have read online, Updated Realtek Family PCI Ethernet drivers from MSIglobal. Disabled/Enabled. ipconfig /flushdns, /release and /renew. I went as far as Backing up and reformating the Hard Drive and before reinstalling the backup I tested it and nothing. Restored my backup file and yep.. nothing.

Its kind of frustrating. I'm not exactly and expert but i am in no way a novice either. This one has me stumped. Im thinking maybe it is a windows service that is not set to start correctly but I figured I would creat a post while I am at work and maybe have and answer to test before I hunt through the services tonight.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi
I had posted earlier also in this forum and d prblm got solved as it was a driver issue. Now again i have got a similar prblm but is not a driver issue. I have a P7H55 Asus Motherboard with the ethernet port and cable working fine individually. However, when i connect them together, the ethernet light on the router remains stable as if connected but still the desktop shows not connected. This time i have installed the drivers which came from the motherboard manufacturer and are the latest. In the Network and Sharing Center, the icon is enabled. It does not show cross sign. Please help me out.

Earlier my desktop was to b in d same place where the router was der. Everything worked fine. Now I decided to shift my desktop to another room. I have kept the router at the earlier place only. I have brought a 25m long new cat 5 cable. When I connected it to my desktop, the orange led on ethernet port do not light up and the desktop is unable to detect the ethernet cable and hence the internet connection. On the router, a light of ethernet keeps on blinking every 1 second. I was worried whether my ethernet port got fried. So i inserted another ethernet cable, but then the ethernet orange light came and the pc detedted the connection. Therefore I thought the cable might be faulty. Therefore I connected my laptop with that 25m cable. But my laptop detected it and showed the internet connection. But now when i again connect the cable to my desktop, there's no light and the pc does not detect it. However, if i connect the 25m cable to my desktop then during boot the ethernet light on router is stable just as when it is normally connected to the internet. But when i go into windows it starts blinking every 1 second.

My router is MTNL Model No. UT-304R2
Desktop - Asus P7H55, core i5
Laptop- HP 2000
Windows 7 Ultimate on both desktop and laptop.

Recently I performed a reinstallation of windows on my laptop. Normally I had no problems with the wireless, but after the reinstallation my laptop refuses to acknowledge that there are wireless networks. When I'm not connected to the internet, it asks to connect using a wire connection only.

I have a Dell Inspiron iM101z running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I downloaded all the drivers for what the Dell website told me my laptop model was, a Dell Inspiron 1121. Attached is a picture showing the oddities of my problem. The icon on the taskbar shows that I have to connect with an ethernet cord; no wireless icon is shown.

If I try to unplug the ethernet cable and connect to the internet, I only get the option to do a broadband connection. Also, once I unplug the cable, I get "no connections available."

Answer:Laptop refuses to detect anything wireless, ethernet works fine

Most likely this is still a driver problem.

I am on a Win 7 based computer. New apt, new internet connection. Old router.
Connects to net fine with an ethernet cable.
Connects to the wifi signal (strong signal) with password authentication BUT no internet access.
All my laptops are experiencing the same issue- so it does not appear to be related to the computer.
I then connected the ethernet cable to a Linksys E2000. Again, good signal, clear connection BUT no internet access.
What can I do??
IPCONFIG/ALL>myTCP.txt did not produce any results in DOS (why??)
Thanks in advance.....

Crashes point to a problem with your display card and possibly your RAM. I also see Service Pack 1 is not installed, which may be the underlying factor for all the crashes.

Hello,My name is Vladan and I have had a problem occur yesterday. My internet stopped working.I immediately tried my phone's wireless connection and saw that it was working fine, so I tried laptop wireless and it too was working. When I plug in my network cable it stops working. My ethernet internet connection status shows that Ipv4 and Ipv6 have "no internet accsess". It's not just my laptop's wired internet that stopped working, it's the whole network I have in my apartment consisting of two more computers who also lost their wired-ethernet internet accsess. I suspect something is wrong with my router since it relays my internet but wireless works fine so I'm stumped. When I plug in my cable it shows limited connectivity.I have tried ipconfig /release - /renew, I have tried netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset log.txt I have tried (netsh winsock reset catalog), also I tried (netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log) and it said the following ::::::Resetting Interface, OK!Resetting Neighbor, OK!Resetting Path, OK!Resetting , failed.Accsess is denied.Resetting, OK!Restart the computer to complete this action.::::I don't know what is this "failed and accsess is denied" but it might be the problem.I have rebooted my router several times but also with no results. I have checked DHCP settings for both router and laptop adapter and it all checks out. I have check IP filtering and MAC filtering on router and it all looks fine. I use no f... Read more

Answer:Network troubleshoot - Ethernet (wired) stopped working, Wireless works fine.

Did your ISP give you this router such as your leasing it etc? If so contact them for a replacement. If you own this router then I'd try factory reset button to set it back to factory default. If that doesn't cure this then buy a new router. They are pretty cheap these days.Your router could have been hacked, the access denied is strange!

Hi there, thanks in advance.

I've had this computer a few months and so far it works great. Then today I turn it on and try to go on the internet and it says I have no connection. Tried plugging and unplugging the cable, wiggled it around, tried to connect it with a different cable and I still have no internet. The cable is in, it tells me there is a local area connection and all, but when I go to properties there is not IP, etc etc.

I have it on a network, if that helps, and none of the others have this problems. The computer prints to a shared printer attached to another computer on my network, so I tried to print something to see if that was still working, but it says it can't due to an unknown error.

Is there a fix for this?

Answer:Computer seems fine, but the ethernet input doesn't work?

You might try cycling the modem and router.
Unplug the power from the back of the router and modem for 10 seconds.
Plug the router back in and let it boot up,then do the same with the modem.

My Y500 decided it couldn't receive internet on any connection today. It would connect to any network but it would say that there was no internet. I plugged my computer directly into the modem with an ethernet cable and it still said there was no internet. My router was sending out 5Ghz wifi fine and I was using several other devices on the network successfully. Any idea what could be wrong? I thought it would be my wireless card, but wouldn't I still be able to receive internet through my ethernet port then? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help. I don't want to have to buy a new laptop just because this silly nonsense. I'm at my wit's end.

Answer:Y500: No Internet through WiFi or Ethernet (but fine for other devices)

Have an Asus ultrabook laptop with an Atheros 9485WB-EB wifi/BT adapter. When I'm away from home, it works perfectly. At home, it sees our home network but refuses to connect to it - just get a cannot connect error.

It used to work fine, and then it's gradually gotten worse. At first rebooting the laptop would make it work for a while, then that quit working. Now it's just non-fuctional at home.

Home wifi works fine with other devices as well, and if I plug a USB wifi adapter into the laptop that works too.

Home router is (I forget the model, have to look when I get home) running dd-wrt. Rebooting the router doesn't fix the problem.

Any idea what would make it quit? No setting have been changed on the router during all this.

Hello, I've been having this issue recently. On my laptop, the wifi works fine, and then a little while later, it can't connect at all (it looks like it's connected, then disconnects, and then tries connect again, etc). All the other devices connected to the router is fine, only mine is the problem. I tried looking at device manager, the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 is enabled, updated, and in the properties, it says that the device is working properly.

The problem does go away temporarily when I turn off the router, wait a little, and then turn it back on, but soon afterwards, I continue to have connecting issues.

Here's the info

1. Is this a wired or wireless connection issue?
Wireless

2. Who is your Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
Verizon

3. What type of Broadband connection are you using?
Fios

4. What is the exact Make and Model of your Modem, Router or Modem/Router Combo - Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, TP-LINK, etc.
Router: Actiontec? Not totally sure

5. What is the Name of the Anti-Virus, Security or Firewall Software installed from the problematic
Avast

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Thanks for using the basic requirements, all info provided were very helpful. Your Xirrus capture looks good, no issue there, however, I see that in your wireless connection you're using Public DNS, why not change the DNS'es to auto same as your LAN DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1. You'll have to click on Obtain DNS address automatically....Please follow this Tutorial.

Also, it's best to use WPA2 with AES encryption for a better secured network, you're currently using WEP.

Hey,
My desktop is connected to my router via cable. And it randomly gets disconnected from time to time. I've tried re-installing drivers. I get the red X on my network icon in the taskbar, which usually happens when a cable is unplugged. I fixes it self after a minute or 2, its never longer than 1 minute, usually 10-15 seconds, and it happens ever 10-15 minutes.

My wifi works fine, and I have a vonage box connected to my main router which works fine too. It's just my desktop. I've tried different ports, same problem.

I'm heading home in a few hours and I've picked up a new 5 meter cable to check with.

What else could be the problem if the new cable doesn't fix it.

My network adapter is the on baord one on the Asus Maximus Formula.

Thanks.

Answer:Network randomly disconnecting. Wifi works fine.

Seems to be something wrong within the cable or could be the network card within your pc? Did you try the cable on any other pc or that?

Just the other day, my music was playing no problem. I could listen to music on my website, and in Winamp like I always do. Today, I go to listen to it, and I can't hear anything! My sound is not on mute- I checked all the sound settings, and it makes noise, so I don't think it's my audio card. Could it be possible that it's a CODEC problem? None of my music is working and it's awful because I listen to music everyday. It's really upsetting me. I've tried restarting my computer multiple times- it didn't work. What could be causing the issue?

I'm not sure if this could have anything to do with my problem, but yesterday I opened up a .mpg file in Windows Media Player 11 because the sound didn't work in my Winamp when I tried it (that wasn't when the problem started- music on the internet worked), and it worked in WMP. However, after I close it and go to listen to music, it doesn't work! I doubt that had anything to do with it, or it might have, but please help.

I'm at a total loss without my music. ): Any help would be amazing.

I'm trying to figure out if my problem is my graphics card (EVGA GTX 460 1GB) or my motherboard (Biostar TZ68A+ LGA1155).

This computer is a brand new build. Please click my system specs for more details.

I have two PCI-E 2.0 slots. There is one x16 slot and one x4 slot.

90% of the time, my machine freezes a few seconds after powering on (at the BIOS logo screen or a few seconds after that) while inserted in the x16 slot. Sometimes it works, however, yet it is so infrequently that I've given up on the x16 slot for now. It will even freeze after I've entered my BIOS settings page, even just while browsing around in it.

The same graphics card in my PCI-E 2.0 x4 slot works fine (if you ignore the fact that it's running at 1/4 it's potential speed). At least I can boot the machine up.

I've spoken with a few different professionals about this, and the conclusion is that my problem lies either (a) with my PCI-E x16 slot; or (b) with my GTX 460. Apparently the graphics card COULD work just fine in the x4 slot and still be damaged.

Now, I know that you're going to tell me to try a different card in my computer, or try the card in a different computer. However that isn't practical for me at the moment.

I was wondering what you guys think, or if anyone has experience with this first-hand.

What are you leaning towards? Mobo, or Gfx card?

Answer:Graphics card in PCI-E x16 doesn't work, works fine in the x4 slot ??

Should also have mentioned that I've run three passes with Memtest86 without any errors.

I connected my HP Deskjet 450 and it downloaded the driver, it works fine, BUT it does not give me a notification icon or "safely remove hardware". So when I'm done printing I just disconnect the USB.

ALSO, since it doesn't connect with the HP software, I can't see how much ink is left (!).

Are these two things normal? Anything I can do about them?

Thanks!

Hi!
As the title explains, I have a 40k Mbit/s connection, which my father's and sister's laptop get as advertised, but my pc gets speeds that vary from 2k-15k Mbits/s. Although, when I connect to the internet via ethernet cable the speed is as advertised, around 30k-40k. So I replaced the wifi adapter usb, but that did nothing, so I ran malware tests, even though nod32 did end up removing a MyStartSearch browser malware, internet speed is still slow. My dad also reset and reconfigured the router's setting but to no avail. I'm all out of ideas at this point, what to do next?
I also checked for any programs that might interfere or limit my internet speed in any way but found none. I should also mention that between malwarebytes and nod32 ive perhaps removed the same MyStartSearch malware 5 times already.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer:Wifi speed is inexplicably slow, other pc's unaffected, with ethernet cable fine

I've removed the startsearch malware before and after i got the rly bad internet, it doesn't really seem to be related to it tho.

So I am attempting to connect to the wifi network at my girlfriends place, which I have done fine previously, but my laptop cant find it at all. I have tried restrarting my laptop, installing new drivers for the atheros wireless adaptor, resetting the router, but it still wont show up. It connects fine to other (older and newer) devices, and works fine when connected via ethernet cable, but it is hardly practical to sit on top of the router all day.

My laptop detects other networks fine, such as those of the neighbors and connects to my own home network fine. I have also tried deleting the saved network and manually connecting to the network while also checking the box about connecting even if the network is not broadcasting its SSID. Still nothing. I also checked power management settings and made sure it the network adaptor was using max performance power settings.

Previously when I set up their router, it was broadcasting on a single channel between 1 and 11, cant remember exactly which, and I have no reason to believe they have changed it.

Answer:Cant find specific Wifi Network but works fine with other devices.

connect by ethernet and have a look at the name and channel- it could be using channel 12 or 13 which is allowed outside the US but your PC is using channels 1-11 if US based setting

look at the SSID name and if indeed set to broadcast

I have seen that issue a few times - although xirrus usually shows the channel

all those signals are very low

whats the name of the wireless signal at your girlfriends
and where is that xirrus screen shot from - your girlfriends ?

Over multiple devices on the network, wifi works (including this laptop I'm running on). However, any time I try to use ethernet (including on this laptop), there is no internet connection. The error when troubleshooting is Dns server not responding. While on ethernet connection, I can access the networked printer, but cannot access the default gateway (so connection is going from room to the modem, and through)
I have tried restarting the wifi/lan modem, which then connects to another router down stairs which I haven't restarted (my dad won't let me). I have tried flushing dns, uninstalling and re installing the adapter, starting in safe mode with networking.

The laptop (XPS M1330, Vista) doesn't connect to our network. It recognizes available signals but doesn't connect. Other computers connect fine to the network.

Winsock fix repairs the issue after one reboot but the next reboot reverts the progress. Command-line solutions (netsh int, many other flags on netsh) fail to make any headway. Not a card issue, an external wi-fi adapter doesn't connect either (with proprietary driver/software) and the wi-fi connects through a Hiren's boot CD. We tried giving it a static IP but that doesn't help at all.

My diagnosis is a low-level software issue. SFC "discovered" and "repaired" some broken system files but the issue persisted. I believe we've run an MBAM quick scan but I don't want to waste my time with a full scan on the basis that a virus wouldn't get rid of wi-fi connectivity but leave wired in tact.

We've tried all we can on this machine and it's getting very frustrating. If anybody here has experience with this issue, please enlighten me. I've had it for four days with no semblance of success (besides the one-time winsock fix).

If I was on the computer, I would attach an image of the computer connecting to the network with "local only" connection. You know the deal... Computer -------- Network ----x---- Internet and a 169.254.xx.xx IP address.

I have Win7 Ultimate installed on a Dell Optiplex GX620 P4 hyperthread, approx 6 years old. Bios is most current Phoenix ROM Bios Plus 1.10 A11. I have 2 sata drives and 2 IDE drives installed. Boot is from SATA 0. SATA drives 2&3 are not present. All is well with this part of the equation.

I had been running a Seagate 250GB IDE drive (ST3250824A) as BIOS drive 4, master drive, jumper selected. I just installed a second 120gb Seagate IDE (ST3120026A) as a slave, BIOS drive 5. That was when things got interesting. When I rebooted BIOS took a long time to load, and then reported that neither IDE drive was present. I then did all the obvious things: Disconnected one drive at a time - BIOS would recognize the connected drive. Switched master & slave drive positions. Changed jumpering from master/slave to cable select. Installed a new ribbon cable. Checked that BIOS drive recognition was set to 'Auto' for both drives. Results are always the same: either drive is recognized when only one is connected but BIOS does not recognize them when both are installed. On boot I receive a warning that IDE Drives 4 & 5 are not present and have to press F1 to continue. When I enter Setup BIOS reports the drives as unknown drive type. When only one is connected BIOS accurately reports the drive model # & capacity.

After going through all this,I decided to bring WIn 7 up and see what would happen. To my surprise, W7 showed both drives and worked fine. Device Manager prop... Read more

Answer:Dell Bios Doesn't See IDE Hard Disks but Windows 7 Does & Works Fine.

The only time I've found something similar is when I had a CD drive as MASTER on an IDE port and a hard drive as slave. It seems BIOS would inquire or skip on the CD and not bother waiting for a response on the hard drive. Windows would see it fine as by that time, it was spun up, etc. But BIOS never showed it, only the CD drive. Access to hard drive was not a problem.

Recently I'm getting some trouble with my home server and I thought I'll ask here before troubleshooting it myself (a bit short on time).

I didn't notice it for some time because it is fully automated and works by shared resources and telnet. I noticed it when I got back home and... nothing :D (lights, ventilation and many more are connected to it).

When I tried to use VNC it failed. When I went to the box and checked display there was no BSOD, just black screen, like when PC is connected to power but turned off. After restart everything worked fine. I set up some logging and dumps in case of error / bsod and left it be.

After one day I tried to use VNC and it failed, display was dead too. Services and shares worked FINE tho. Power off / restart buttons DIDN'T work, I had to hold off 4 sec.

After restart - logs clean, no dumps, main suspect VGA card.
What do you think, did you ever encountered anything similar? What can be failing? Most likely OS or hardware error?

Answer:Display/VNC doesn't work but file/service sharing works fine

After some observation VGA is fine, no power problems either. It looks like its a mobo problem (noticed wrong system time). I'll sit through post next time I restart it and reset bios.

Hello!
I just got a new modem (Netgear) that I replaced the old one (D-Link). The wifi is working perfectly, laptops, iPads etc. is working all fine.
The problem is, the computer that uses Ethernet cable isn't working at all. It's says 'Internet service unavailable' and the networks name went from 'unidentified' to 'Network 2'. Both computers using Ethernet cable isn't working and I have updated drive, try to see if it is the routers (Belkin G wireless)fault etc. Even my printer isn't working even though it uses wifi. The printer tough says 'Press router's WSP button' but my router doesn't have one.

So how can I fix this problem and make those computers work?

(Sorry for the description/language, I only have basic computer knowledge)

Thanks!

Also if i unplug the ethernet cable that goes to my wireless router and plug it into my ethernet port on my laptop i get limited or no connectivity show up.Anyway thts pretty much my problem hopefully someone can help me out, if you need any more info then ask away, thanks in advance!

Hello all, just joined...first post here.

I'm having major network connection issues. This one is baffleing, and that's putting it simple. I'm not computer illiterate by any means and I don't consider myself a newbie either. With that said however, I'm no guru but do know my stuff somewhat.

Here's my dilemna...and I'd like to go ahead and thank you all for you help ahead of time.

I'm running a Windows Vista desktop and laptop. There's internet sharing via Netgear Wireless G router (WGR614) and ISP is Comcast. Wireless seems to be fine however ethernet is acting up.

I'll try simplifying this possibly by listing my observations:

-Wireless is fine.
-Modem to router (via ethernet which is really weird) is fine. Router shows it's receiving a connection and it no doubt is as the router's broadcasting wireless signals...and strong ones at that.
-Laptop and Xbox 360 pick up strong wirless signals extremely well and perform as such. The laptop surfs the net without any latency, same goes for the Xbox 360 online gaming. I had wireless internet with AT&T and everything was fine. Today I switched to Bright House and my laptop will not connect wirelessly to the router. I am able to use the ethernet cord to connect and my mobile devices connect to the wireless network with no problem. Please help ! My computer is an Acer and is operating on Windows 7

Answer:Ethernet works, wireless doesn't

Hey Ashp10. You had AT&T as your ISP, but now you are using Bright House, correct?. Did you have your own router when with AT&T or were you using a combo modem/router provided by them. How about with Bright House, are you using a box provided by them or are you using your own router?.

We are having some concerning issues with our modem. Our wireless works perfectly, all our phones connect as well as our roommate's laptop. Yet, the two devices we have connected to our modem cannot connect to the Internet via ethernet without having to reboot the modem. It's really bizarre.

The computer runs on Windows 7 and the other device is our Xbox One. Both have issues connecting to the Internet without rebooting the modem. It has been weeks of this!

Our Internet is provided by Mediacom in Central Illinois.

We've tried un hooking the ethernet cables, no luck. Switched out the cables, no luck. The only thing that works is rebooting the modem.

Answer:Wireless works, but ethernet doesn't! Help!

It sounds like it maybe an issue with the modem/router , as it happens on two devices with two different cables - that would be my suspicion

Will Mediacom replace the modem for you ?

Once you have rebooted the modem, I assume the devices work fine from then on ?
why are you reconnecting devices to the LAN

Hoping someone can help me connect to my new wifi!

A few days ago, I just had comcast cable/internet/home phone installed, all run through a modem/router combo. (I'll try to post some more specific details below). So, TV and phone are working great. And actually even the internet is working great. I just can't connect MY laptop to the internet. I can connect my iPhone and Kindle Fire w/o difficulty. And if I plug into the ethernet cable, I can get the laptop to go the internet. But when I connect to my wifi connection, I end up with only a local connection. On a side note, the first time I tried to connect to the signal, my computer asked me to set up a profile for it (WLAN profile I think). And I did, stupidly. I vaguely remember having a problem with that in the past, but I had tech support at my college that fixed it.

I have restarted both the modem/router and my computer multiple times. I have tried to repair the connection with Windows. I have tried tech support with comcast, but they keep referring me to the computer manufacturer. There is an unsecured signal nearby I CAN connect to (tried out of curiosity to make sure it WASN'T the laptop), but I don't want to pirate, so instead I stay tethered to my 2ft ethernet cable. I have searched google and reddit to no avail. I do not claim to be tech savvy, but I can follow directions pretty well (just be specific step-by-step). Last night out of desperation I tried the Geek Squad online chat to help, bu... Read more

I have been using my ASUS X53E laptop on the WiFi at my university for the past 4 months with no problems connecting to the internet. A few days ago, my internet suddenly started going in and out. It will work alright for about an hour, and then it will stop working completely, even though it says my WiFi connection is still "excellent". However, when I plugged in an ethernet cable, it has been working perfectly with no problems.
No one else around me has been having problems with the WiFi - it's just me. Any ideas?

Hi,

Iíve been connecting my laptop (running windows 8.1) to the internet via a wireless router (TP-LINKís TL-WR841N) for quite some time. Now Iím trying to do so via an Ethernet cable connected to the router, but Iíve tried with two different Ethernet cables and neither work. Sometimes the internet connection status will initially say connected, but when I try to access a webpage I get the error ďDNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIGĒ on chrome, then the connection status changes to limited. I can connect to the internet via Ethernet cable at work.

I used to have a static IP reserved for my laptop, but then removed it to see if that would make the Ethernet connection work (it didnít).

I have also reset the modem, run troubleshooting, reset my laptop numerous times, and run ipconfig release/renew. I also changed the name of the router, then changed it back and re-input the password.

Partway while trying these things my laptop changed from identifying the connection as Wire1 (name of my router), to calling it unidentified network (no internet access). My Lumia 520 windows phone also became unable to connect to the router (it says Wire1 is not responding).

Can anyone help me with solving either of these problems regarding my laptop and phone?

Hi,

Earlier today my wireless connection suddenly stopped working. If I plug an ethernet cable into my computer, I can still get online, so it isn't a problem with my router. When I try to connect wirelessly, I can see the network. But when I try to connect, it says "Windows was unable to connect to linksys."

This is what I get when I type ipconfig /all in command prompt without ethernet cable in:

So for about 2-3 months I've been running hardwired Ethernet internet instead of wifi. I keep my Dell plugged into my tv. The other day I tried to move it and use wifi in another room but I have no option. When I first started with Windows 10 on release day I was using wifi with no problems and when going the Ethernet route it was always plug n play when you going to wifi vs wired.
1. Even after unplugging the Ethernet cord the symbol doesn't change to a wireless symbol the Ethernet symbol just has a little red box.
2. Tried turning airplane mode on and off as well as full pc reboot
3. Right clicking internet from the bottom right of the screen image and clicking open network and sharing doesn't give any wireless options
4. I've tried troubleshooting also with Ethernet unplugged and no success.
So just to repeat Ethernet works perfectly. Wifi used to work. My roommate who also is running the same version of Dell wifi works perfectly. Same account and everything.
The only thing I can think of is the pc updated one day as I have automatic updates and it wiped the driver maybe. So if anyone has any ideas on what to do.
Thanks

Answer:Only Ethernet Internet works, wifi option not available

Giving this a bump. I really need help. Wifi isn't an option anywhere to turn it on. Its like it disappeared

Hi all!

I have a problem with my university internet. I can connect fine through wireless, no problems at all.
However when I attempt to use my ethernet cable, I have a connection for 5-10 seconds before any webpage I attempt to access is directed to a portal to log in with my university ID and password. Once I do so and the portal has confirmed that I have access (the user/pass has worked), the display page tells me to retry my original URL, however the internet connection does not work and I am not able to access anything. Any help? Thanks!

I have gone to the help center at my school and they were unable to help me

A note: I am UTTERLY illiterate concerning networking (and English is not my mother tongue), so if someone knows how this problem can be solved, I will be thankful if you use as simple words as possible.

A week ago I got Conexant router (4*ETH+1*USB). It was already configured, the only requirement was that I must set LAN connections in all of my computers to "automatic IP" (and whatever else that goes with it - everything must be "automatic"). I connected it via USB and it works perfectly.

Now I wanted to add two more computers, both of a new generation and having LAN ports, drivers and connections. I've heard that you can't have USB and ethernet simultaneously, but the manual of the router claimed I can have them, so I connected my laptop with the router via ethernet cable. The laptop didn't recognize anything, it couldn't activate the "Quick setup" option on the CD I got with the router (so I couldn't do the online confirmation), and FURTHERMORE: my main PC (the one that's connected via USB) lost connection that very moment; even the icon in its "Internet options" dissapeared. I had to unplug everything and reinstall USB. The same happened when I tried to connect the other computer.

Then I deinstalled USB from my PC and tried to connect it via ethernet (it also has ethernet port and LAN-ethernet connection created, so I guess it fullfills all the requirements). The lights on the router were showing ... Read more

Hello,i have made a clean install of Win7Pro on my two days old SL510 (28477MG). I have even installed the latest Wifi-drivers for the "Intel WiFi link 1000bgn" from Intel (version 13.2.1.5, available from Intel since 02.07.2010), as the Lenovo-drivers did not work. WiFi is switched on (this is shown via the Fn/F5), my network is shown as available. Nonetheless i can not connect via wifi, even when all wifi-protection is switched off. Connection to my router via ethernet works without problems. Would appreciate support. Stefan

Hey guys,

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEH15EN laptop & the OS is Windows 7 home basic. I have a wifi router which is of TPLINK.

The wifi won't connect to my laptop but it works fine on my mobile..it would only start working when I use the ethernet cable. I never had this problem before. I have tried everything ..I also tried the winsockfix.bat but all my efforts have gone in vain..I just don't know if the wifi router is faulty or the modem of my ISP...Please help me solve this problem.

Best Regards,
Om

Answer:Wifi on my laptop won't work but works when I use the ethernet cable

I have solved the problem by myself. To do this, first you have to disconnect your Ethernet cable from your laptop and follow the steps: Start>Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center>Manage Wireless Networks and remove all wireless connections by right click on it and select Remove network from the drop down menu. After doing this, close the windows and scan for the Wi-Fi networks. Click on the available network and select connect. After a while, you will be asked to give a password for your Wi-Fi connection. Type the password and click on connect button. And now will be connected to your Wi-Fi network via wireless.

May be it will help you.

Hi All,

I have Windows Vista home premium. I moved from Chicago to Boston. Before I left Chicago, I tried removing kaspersky internet security 2011 as my laptop used to heat up and shut down often (you can hear the voice from laptop when more process are running and it shut's down). While uninstalling kaspersky, the laptop shutdown half way.

I moved to Boston, I tried connecting to wireless, it does not work. It shows connected, excellent signal strength but bytes received 0. Wireless works fine for other room mates on their laptops. If I try connecting from cable, internet works fine.

Answer:Solved: ethernet cable works, wifi does not work

The following was put together mostly by etaf with a little help from me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Atheros Wireless Adapter - AR5007EG & AR5007
Over the last four or so years we have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and mainly on windows Vista.
We have seen just a couple of issues on other windows operating system, windows XP and windows 7.

Windows XP:- A driver update has resolved the issue
Windows 7 :- No conclusive results for a fix

The wireless adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
Please post back a reply here, and let us know if that works or does not work.

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver."

--- 2) Download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section,

--- 3) On one occasion re-setting the router back to factory default and re-configuring the router settings has resolved the issue

--- 4) The majority of members, have now used the drivers from the atheros driver site, which has resolved the issue.

Hi guys - setting up computers in my new home and have got the wifi working fine with my BT Home Hub router (works for laptops, mobile devices etc)
Have been trying to connect via Ethernet for a laptop and home pc for a faster/more reliable connection but it doesn't seem to be working.

When plugged in the Network and Sharing Centre simply displays the loading blue circle with 'identifying' but no network access. When clicking on the Local Area Connection Status both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity state no network access, but I can't seem to find any hardware problems on the laptop. The same issue occurs for other laptops at home and I know my laptop works with Ethernet at work.

Running ipconfig/all shows that DHCP is enabled (I checked this on the properties tab for the IPvs), autoconfiguration is enabled. I can add in a copy and paste of the whole ipconfig/all if that's helpful - 'media disconnected' shows for Tunnel adapters but I don't really understand what they are...

If anyone could help at all I'd be really grateful !

Hi There,
I recently moved house and got Virgin internet with a new router/modem. I have an oldish laptop whose wireless has always worked. Since setting everything up with the new router the wireless doesn't work. When plugging in the ethernet cable everything is fine. What the title says. I bought a TP-Link WDR4300 and installed it, and everything works perfectly on every device except for my laptop (Windows 8.1 Lenovo G480, running Windows Defender as AV). When connecting wirelessly, I get access to the router, but it shows "limited", and it doesn't even let me get into the setup page (192.168.0.1) and when I ping it, every packet is lost. Ethernet, meanwhile, works perfectly. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to fix it.

I'd like to attach the ipconfig outputs but my command prompt is in spanish and some of the characters are missing in the .txt file, too. I don't know how to get the file in english.

@jobeard I saw one thread you solved in which you said to mention you so you could help. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks beforehand for any and all suggestions.

Answer:WiFi doesn't work, Ethernet does

Hi, You will always have to use the ethernet (Cat 5) cable to get into your router's software, at 192.168.0.1, all routers are set up like that for security reasons.
It's done that way so that no one can change your settings, passwords etc using a wireless connection, you must use the Cat 5 cable to make setup & security changes.
Did you get any setup software with the TP Link router?
If you get good internet access using Windows 8.1 using the ethernet cable, it
might point to possible wireless driver issues.
It might be worth downloading the latest driver for your WDR4300 from the TP-link website;
http://www.tp-link.es/support/download/?model=TL-WDR4300&version=V1

The Intel AC3165 wifi adapter on my Inspiron 7559 periodically will disconnect every couple of minutes and most the time I have to go through the Disable/Enable route to get it to work.  But then, magically, it will start to work properly and will do so for several days until the problems start again.
I have the latest driver installed (18.33.0.1) and I have turned off the "allow operating system to turn off wifi" switch.  And I have played with other settings until I am blue in the face.
Furthermore, even when the adapter doesn't continually disconnect, it is totally unreliable when switching from one wifi source to another.  Sometimes the change is easy, but many times I have to reboot the computer to make it happen.  Very frustrating.

My Z370, bought 2 years ago. The wireless works at home, and hotel when I was in business trip. But on campus, it cannot detect any WIRELESS connection now. Originally, it can detect wireless on campus with very weak signal and it was always disconnected. So I used a wire for internet. But now, the wireless doesnot work at all, no connection can be found when I am on campus (in my lab, in my advisor's office,...etc.) It's really frustrating when I meet with my advisor at that time he may send me some files but I cannot acess internet at all.

Answer:Z370 cannot find campus wirelss, but works elsewhere

Welcome to the forum! What I would do is remove the wireless card from the system and then boot the machine up without the card installed.  Then shut the machine back off, re-install card and boot it up to see how it now performs wirelessly.  This procedure would accomplish two things.  First, it would re-install the card into the operating system thus eliminating the possibility of any glitches with its previous installation into the OS.  Secondly, the removal and re-installation of the card would insure that it is properly seated and that all connections are making good contact.  The whole procedure is relatively easy to do since the wireless card can be accessed under a panel on the bottom of the laptop.  The downside is that when Windows re-installs the card you will more than likely lose all your previous saved wireless log-ins. The link below is for the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your model in a .PDF format.  Page #42 will explain how to remove the card and #43 how to install it.  Be sure to follow any cautions in regards to static electricity, powering the system off and having the battery removed while working inside.   http://download.lenovo.com/UserFiles/UserGuide/en/User's%20guides%20and%20manuals/Z370&Z470&Z570/Len...

Hey guys, my laptop asus stopped working with wifi connection and I was just reading some posts here about this same problem but didn't find how to fix it.

I was uninstalling some programs from my pc but I didn't uninstall programs named "something wireless". I just took off what I knew I could.

I also tried the option "solve problems" in the wireless pc symbol and the answer was to connect my laptop to an ethernet cable...that never happened. Just now.

Does anyone knows how I get back my wireless connection? Pleasee

Answer:WiFi doesn't work only with cable ethernet

Powercycle the modem and router. Here is a specific order if you have a separate modem and router.
1. Shut down all PC's.
2. Shut down the Modem and router.
3. Power on the modem only. Wait 2 minutes or so.
4. Power on the router. Wait 2 minutes or so.
If you have a modem/router combo, then you don't need step 4.
5. Boot up the PC and see if you can connect.

Hello,

I have a new PC (notebook) that my friend gave me. It's name is "Gigabook" which is not very famous.. I suspect it is a small company that combines hardware into a notebook.

Anyways, I have installed Windows 7 on it but found out that the internet doesn't work. for some reason I can't turn on the WiFi to find out my network and when I connect an Ethernet cable to the notebook, nothing happens..

I thought it's the driver, could download it and transfer it to the notebook via USB drive. the problem is I can't find the software anywhere..

My network card is WAN Miniport. I can check any other hardware here, it's just that you won't find anything about Gigabook..

P.S.
a) this is my first post on your forums. please forgive me if I posted in the wrong place or made other noob mistake.
b) I come from the Mac and Linux world, so I don't have a lot experience on this OS.. I'll appreciate any help.

Thank you very much in advance.

Answer:Can't Turn On WiFi And Ethernet Doesn't Work

What was the original OS? Did you run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor before you installed Win 7? It's possible the wifi/Ethernet cards do not have available Win 7 drivers. What is the model number of your machine?

Hi,I'm trying to set up a wireless router on my desktop computer but the ethernet cable that goes from the modem router to the tower doesn't fit. The cable has two rectangular ends where as the modem space in my tower has a smaller square hole. Are there adapters available so that I can connect the ethernet cable to my tower? And if so, what would they be called? Many thanksJule

Answer:WiFi ethernet cable doesn't fit into the tower

The one on the left of the two pictures. It's the little square one.

My wifi was working just fine last night, and then suddening just stopped. I was unable to use my Amazon Video, and my laptop, so it was not just the devices. I have uverse internet. When I connect the ethernet cable to my laptop, it works. I have unplugged and restarted several times. I just now noticed that when I walk away from the room the router is in, and go into the room where my television is, the wifi disconnects and I can no longer get on the internet. There's a black device of some sort that is plugged into an outlet in a room in between the router and the TV-I know I should already know this, but is that something that is connected to my wifi - like a signal booster? As I type, sitting in the room with my router, the internet has gone off again, and will have to plug my laptop into the ethernet cable to send this message.
Sometimes my wifi shows up as an option to connect to, and sometimes it doesn't.

Wifi suddenly stopped working, works with Ethernet cable, works with iPad and iPhone, but not with Sony Vaio laptop wifi.

Have spent hours on the phone with Internet Service Provider, who went through all settings and checked everything (checked CMD prompts and changed SSID, created new channels, etc).

I'm using Windows 7 and have McAfee. What could have caused this to suddenly stop working? How do I get it to work again? I have checked my wifi is still on, it still connects to the wireless modem router (D-Link), and at start up has a yellow triangle with exclamation mark inside, then that disappears and says internet is connected (on internet bars icon) but no browsing is possible at all with any of my browsers (chrome, Firefox, explorer).

Have disabled McAfee firewall, have restarted in safe mode, but nothing is helping.

Have tried on different wifi connections, with same problem. I restored to the last date I could use wifi and it didn't change anything.... Help please!

i moved back into college yesterday (saturday) and i am having a wierd problem with the net work here. Over the break i built my new computer (in sig) and i decided to keep the old shuttle to use as a spare / for lan parties or whatever. when i first got back on campus i plugged in my new computer and the network worked fine for a few hours, then just stopped working all together.

i have tried releasing/renewing the ip address, and assigning the information manually and it did not work. i have also uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for my onboard nic.

The wierd part is that when i plug my shuttle system in with the cat-5 cable and everything it works fine (i am posting from it right now)

1) got new computer over break
2) network/internet worked for a few hours
3) network/internet stopped working
4) cant get it to work again
5) shuttle system works fine on same cat-5 cable
6) i have tried everything that i can think of to get it working

on a side note, when i have everything set to auto in tcp/ip the ip address that it gets when i release and renew is completly different than any of my room mates IPs.

another note, just tried booting knoppix to see if it was a problem with the windows network settings and i still had no luck.

This might be a stupid question, since it worked for a while but you never know.... does your uni line have mac address filtering? could it have jsut noticed you after a while (unlikely but you never know)

Also have you tried a different network card in your pc just to see if your card is the problem?

Hello,

I am running Windows XP on Toshiba Sat. M55-S3292 laptop. The wireless card is Intel(R) PRO.
My wireless connection works just fine on campus but it does not work in a coffee shop where I used to stay and browse the web ...etc. It usually gets stuck at renewing my IP address. When I checked the status/support, there was no gateway, DNS, or WINS assigned. I am not sure if you guys talked about this problem before. Please, help.

Forgot to tell you, in the coffee shop, everybody else's wireless is working just great !!

I am running Ubuntu linux on another partition and have NEVER had any driver problems with my Lenovo  Runs beautifully!! Last week I installed Windows XP Pro, and even after downloading all of the drivers from this very site and installing them, windows still thinks that ethernet, wifi, and my video card and etc are not connected. The finger scanner drivers are the only ones that worked without a hitch. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Answer:Windows XP Pro doesn't recognize ethernet, wifi, or video...

Welcome to the forum! Posting the 7-character model number of your ThinkPad would help us assist you better... Please be advised that downloading the drivers is just the first part of the process. After that, they must be unpacked from the appropriate directory. For instance, for ethernet driver it would be C>Drivers>Win>Ethernet. I'm fairly certain that the Win subfolder on your hard drive is full of drivers waiting to be unpacked, but can't be more specific without knowing the model code... Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi. Wife got a new laptop (HP2000). Works fine with a cable attached but wouldn't connect via WIFI. I then opened the GUEST Wifi and it works fine.

Wifi works great with my Android and other laptop, but I turned both off just in case...

I rebooted the laptop, the router (Moto Surfboard SBG6580) etc. I suspect this is something simple.

Anyone?

Answer:Guest WIFI works, Main doesn't

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 8 or 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I have a Dell Studio 17 with Vista and Wifi capability. I've had the computer for a year and a half, and I've never had a major problem with wireless connection before. Any problem has been purely because of a low connection strength or because I was in a classroom (I'm a college student) in which multiple people were trying to connect at once. Eventually it always worked.

I was home for the weekend and connected to my primary wireless connection and all of a sudden I lost connection and could not reconnect.

I tried restarting and shutting off both the computer and wireless router. I tried resetting the wireless router. I tried turning on and off the Wifi button on my computer. Still cannot connect.

I plugged in an ethernet cable into my internet directly from the router and it runs fine (that is how I am on the internet on my laptop at the moment).

I will not always have access to an ethernet cable when I go back to school later today and I have a project I need to research so I'm kind of in a rush to get this figured out. Also it's just so much easier connecting wireless and obviously I'd like this fixed.

Anyway, I read up on other people's similar problem and I don't know if I changed something or messed up, but now whenever i click to view Wireless Connections the router for my house has a red x next to it and says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network."

Morning all

I've googled this and found heaps of people having the same issue, but nothing that actually resolves it. I'm using a laptop with internal wifi but I also have an external wifi dongle as I connect to my neighbours internet (I have permission and the passwords, etc). Both the internal and external used to work fine and both would have internet connection. But something recently has changed and now the internal wifi still works with both network and internet connection, but the external one only has network connection and no internet connection.

The reason I use the external one is it gives much better signal strength than the internal one and, as said, both used to work just fine.

Now I've tried uninstalling the external drivers and dongle and reinstalling it but no dice. I've tried doing the netsh stuff people have recommended in some of the search pages but no dice. Tried release and renew of IP, but no dice. I've disabled all firewalls but no dice (and I figure the firewalls would stop both connections anyway but I thought I'd try it)

My internal card uses Atheros drivers and my external uses the Ralink drivers (I'm going from memory now as it's at home and I'm now at work). Both have IPs to the network, everything looks similar for both when you do an ipconfig /all.

Does anyone know how to fix it and the low signal strength of my internal wifi to get internet is rather flakey unless I stand outside their home (they've offered to set me up a cha... Read more

Answer:WIFI Internet - Internal works, external doesn't

Have you tried taking your laptop to their house and connecting with your internal card? There might not be anything wrong with your computer - it might be something on their end that's preventing you from accessing the internet.

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron N5010 with Windows 7. I have been using Time Warner Internet. It worked fine until yesterday. WiFi stopped working out of the blue. When I tried, wired connection works pretty well. I do not recall any significant changes to my computer while this happened. So now I can connect to the wifi hotspot but it says "No Internet Connection". When I connect the LAN wire with the WiFi router, internet works. The moment I remove it, it says No Internet Access, although computer is connected to the hotspot and signal is very well.

The drivers are being shown as up to date in device manager.

I tried following instructions given here: http://www.wikihow.com/Repair-Winsock-and-TCP/IP
This didn't work. Problem persists.

I have been through some threads around here. This is the ipconfig output:
