Netgear CM500 Modem to Linksys WRT54G

Question: Netgear CM500 Modem to Linksys WRT54G

I just bought a new Modem (Netgear CM500) to use with a Linksys WRT54G Router... using Win 7 on Desktop and Win 8 on HP Laptop.
When connecting the Modem to the Desktop all is well with Internet. When I remove the cable from the DeskTop to go into the Router (along with adding the cable from the Modem to the router). initially I had the set up working. I unplugged the cable to move the component and now I can not get the router to work and I can only use the Internet when the Router is out of the connection.
I lose internet connection on Desktop and Laptop when trying to use the router. I have removed power from both modem and router in many different ways and rebooted both systems. I cannot access 192.168.1.1 and I have reset the Router. I'm out of ideas.

Please help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have just recently set up the above wireless network for my Sony Vaio desktop to run remotely from my sons Compaq desktop. The Sony is approx 46' away and thru 3 walls. Problem is this: when my son is not using his computer the connection to wireless is very fast. When he gets on his computer this connection becomes sketchy to none. I have changed channels from 1 to 11 to 6 and 6 is the best so far. However, I still have the same problem. Lack of consistent connectivity. Do I keep trying the different channels or am I too far away for this to work properly or do I need to reconfig the setup in some way? I did buy and install the higher gain antennae. Somewhat better but, nothing to write home about. Any thoughts?

How can I wirelessly connect a Linksys WRT54G and a Netgear WGR614? The Linksys supports WDS but apparantly the Netgear does not. Can I still connect these two devices wirelessly? (eg. so my consoles and HTPC can communicate with the rest of my network)

Answer:How can I connect a Linksys WRT54G and a Netgear WGR614?

Only way I know is to use firmware from Sveasoft. I've done it between 2 Linksys's befoer, but I'm not sure if Sveasoft's firmware supports Netgear yet.

A while back my company purchased a new router (NG FVS124G) as ours was getting dated (old sonicwall, but not relevant). We received it and used all the old settings from the existing router to get it working, but no luck. We could not get it to connect to the internet, our web server would not work, and our VPN does not work either. After much tinkering, by my manager still nothing. Finally in desparation he brought in his router from home (LS WRT54G) so at least we could get up and running again. Again he loaded the old settings, and bam everything works Internet, Web Server, and VPN.

I have just recently inherited this problem, in a desperate attempt to get a more secure network going. So, this all leads to my question how is it possible the with the exact same settings one router works (WRT54G) and the other (FVS124G) does not?

We are using a static IP address.
Yes, i double, triple, quadruple checked that it all matches.
All ports that are need are allowed (as far as i know).

Any ideas?

Answer:Linksys WRT54G and Netgear FVS124G Router connection problem

From what I am seeing, you need to set the allowed ports and protocols
in the firewall setup in order to get traffic through the WAN.
The lynksys doesn't have this extensive protection.
Pobably just has virtual server and dmz.
You may want to check the manual on setting up WAN traffic
through the firewall.

I am currently using a basic DSL Modem to access the Internet. It is connected to a WRT54G Router with long range antennas and my current V5/6 with dd-wrt works like a dream for multiple users. All connection is via WIFI except a VoIP unit plugged into one of the Router ports. All of this has proven reliable and works very well.

I am interested in replacing only the DSL Modem with ATT LTE hotspot(?) like Sierra 754S or NetGear 781S by using a mini USB to LAN adaptor cable to connect to the router.and program off the hotspot built-in WIFI output. These units will accept MIMO higher gain antennas and should work well in this hilly area.

I have contacted a number of so called tech support folks and I might as well have been speaking in French.
It makes perfect sense to me to simply want a modem replacement which gets it's Internet access from cell towers. I can only find "enterprise" boxes at absurd prices that seem (?) to have this capability. Am I crazy? What am I missing here. One thing I do see clearly with specifications that are incomplete and visible connectors, etc, not described anywhere in so called specifications, is that this is all about marketing and a
concept push as to how these and similar products should be used..

I would appreciate any experience or information on this. I can't understand why this is not a typical or standard application. Many folks are set up with good routers? Thank you/

hi,
I got a new WRT54G Router and the CD doesnt work . It keeps saying my computer is not connected to the internet. I have tried with both my broadband and my dial-up connections but the CD didnt work. I got it from Circuit City.Firmware version 2.1
I then installed it using the step-by-step guide and then something strange happened :

a. When I click on my broadband connection (start/connect to/broadband)..the connection never goes thru ( i get an unable to connect error) BUT i get logged onto the net. Both the Wireless and Local Connection icons on the bottom RHS of the screen get active.
Obviously if I stick my broadband modem rj-45 jack into my notebook, it connects immediately and i get that 'authenticated' message.

b. I am able to surf but my sister cannot. Her notebook recognises the wireless but doesnt log onto the net at all. I set up a 'home network' but she still cannot connect to the net. The computers are able to see and access each others shared files. We both have Win XP Home edition.

c. My notebook is a Presario with inbuilt wireless and hers is an HP to which we attached a linksys network card.

d. What am i doing wrong ? How do I remove the 'home network I created ? Since I gave it a workgroup name 'home', will I have a problem when I take the notebook to my office which has its own wireless network and another workgroup name ?

Any and all advise welcome .

Hi,
I checked thru and found another thread with a similar problem, but while there were about 40 posts to it, it ended without really providing me a solution.
So heres my problem :
I HAD a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54G) which worked fine to connect thru a ISP supplied basic ADSL modem (AZTECH). The Router would hold my login ID and password and automatically log me into my broadnband connection thru the PPPoE. And my Desktop connected to the router was able to connect fine to the Internet. HOwever, two nights ago, my ADSL Modem "died" and I went out and purchased another (ISP does not supply a replacement anymore). I got a Netgear DM602 ADSL Modem.

Now my problem is that the Netgrear modem is a little too smart and tries to be a router as well and also holds the login ID and password. If I connect the Modem directly to my Desktop, it works fine in that it will log in and allow my PC to connect to the Internet. However, if I just set it up as it used to be before - my Router states that it cannot get an IP Address off the ADSL modem and does not connect.

The old thread that stopped in August 2004, said that I had to set different IP addresses on the Router. My router has a default IP of 192.169.1.0 / 255.255.255.0 while the Netgear Modem goes with 192.168.0.1 / 255.255.255.0

I am sure I have to set something up like a hard code of a gateway or something, but for the life of me, I do not know on which equipment I need to do this. Do I have to turn off the DHC... Read more

Answer:DM602 ADSL Modem thru Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router Problem

Hi,
Managed to work it out. Apparently the 'smart' Netgear DM602 has to have itself do the logging-in. While you can disable the logging into the ISP part, it wont work after that with any router. So, it has to be allowed to log in and be the DHCP Server.

My Linksys WRT54G Wireless router on the other hand is quite happy to allow the modem to log in, so I had to disable the PPPoE logging in aspect, and also disable it from assuming the DHCP responsibility and when they are connected up, all works well - in almost the factory default state of the LinkSys Router.

But all of this I learnt from LinkSys Customer support. And not from the wonderful people at NetGear, who refused to talk to me about how to get their product to work with a router. They did not tell me that disabling the PPPoE logging in sequence will not work on their DM602. They were pretty much not very helpful when it came to getting their product to work with anything else other than a PC. As soon as it tests ok with the PC, they wash their hands off you. Immediately !

My take, never again a NetGear product.

But LinkSys is GREAT !!!

Anyway, hope this helps someone.

Some one please help me get my home network operational now that I've changed to using a Bellsouth provided Netopia 2241N-006 modem. Previously I had been using my Linksys WRT54G wireless router successfully with my Cable ISP modem (Charter). I switched this week to Bellsouth in my area, and I can not get the combination of the 2 devices to work. When I connect the Netopia modem directly to my computer, I can access the internet just fine, but when I try putting the router in the middle, I can't get the internet to work. I've tried several different settings on the linksys including the automatic DHCP setting, the PPPoE setting, I've tried cloning the MAC address to that of the netopia modem. I read one thread on here about port forwarding issues with these 2 devices, but it didn't provide me a solution. I would be very appreciative if someone could help.

thanks,

Answer:Solved: Netopia 2241N-006 modem/Linksys WRT54G v5 wireless router

The Netopia 2241N-006 is a single port router, so what you need to do is one of the following.

Configure the Netopia into "bridge mode" and connect the router in the standard modem/router configuration, or use the following configuration for the secondary router.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

Hi all

I would like to put my dlink behind my router but it didn't work as it doesn't support Stun Server

I have no choice to set up my network as below

(bridge mode)Modem ---->(wan) Dlink 1120S (ethernet)---> (internet)Linksys WRT54G (1)--->PC
But it is not working and i have no internet

Please help.

Answer:Zyxel 660r 61c ethernet modem, Dlink 1120S Voip gateway and linksys WRT54G

A better choice (with the Linksys as secondary) is to configure the Linksys as an ethernet switch and wireless access point.

JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Just switched over to AT&T DSL from Road Runner Cable Modem.

While I had the cable modem, I used a Linksys WRT54G wireless router that had my PC and laptops connected to it.

Since I switched to AT&T DSL, I have been using AT&T's all-in-one device, the Westell DSL modem/wireless router/firewall.

I've noticed that uPnP doesn't work as well on the Westell as it did on the Linksys. I also had to change some settings to get my VPN to connect to my company's network.

Which is better? Should I put the Westell in bridged mode, and reconnect my Linksys? Or keep it the way I have it running it though the all-in-one device?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Westell DSL modem/router/firewall VS. Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router

I'd put the Westell in bridged mode, which will then emulate your old configuration, which apparently worked properly.

Hey all,
I've been having some problems connecting to the internet with my Netgear wireless router(WGR614V16). Ok so I got a Linksys(befcmu10)
Cable modem. I can connect my 2 computers fine with no router, but when I hook up the netgear all I get is a 192 address with internet icon in the network connections folder. I goto 192.168.1.1 page and it brings me to a setup wizard without having to enter the admin admin.
It try's to detect the internet but can't and shows me a picture on how to set it up. I go back into the Network connections folder and the internet icon has disappeared.
I've tried just about everything I can think of reseting the router unplug modem first router second and turn back on in that order. Restarting the computers, inputing manuel IP addresses for both computers. I still can't get onto the internet with the netgear router.
If anyone can help me with this problem would be awsome.

Thanks

So I have AT&T DSL. I bought a Netgear N300 ADSL2+ Modem/WiFi Router that is compatible with my service.

Previously with this Modem/Router it would constantly drop the wireless connection for the Wii I have that was used to stream Netflix.

So recently I bought a Linksys E2500 Router so I could be able to use the Wii, along with 3 other desktops, 1 laptop, and 3 phones.

My ideal setup would be this:
Set the ADSL2+ Modem/Router to be just a modem (I know how to set the option for this)Connect the Linksys Router to be what all the devices connect to wirelessly (this would serve as the DHCP server)
I have read that one of the Routers has to be set to "BRIDGED" mode, yet I don't know which device has to be Bridged

this is being set into bridge mode - by changing to a modem

then connect the modem to the WAN on the router and you should be good to go

Do you have a wireless laptop that you can you can put next to the wii - would be useful to see the quality of the wireless signal and how many other wireless are there which may cause interference

put xirrus onto the laptop and put the laptop next to the wii and post a xirrus screen shot

Question: WRT54G Linksys

My attitude is "if it ain't broke..." and I don't know how old my router is, but it works just fine. Is there a big advantage to go to Wireless N, and is it the "latest?" I use a Roku box, a laptop, iPod Touch and iPad2 with my wifi.
Thanks!

Answer:WRT54G Linksys

It is the latest standard and typically gives you faster and more stable wireless transfers.
However, to benefit from those advantages on all your devices, they would all have to be wireless N compatible.

Hello, i recent purchased one of these wireless routers, and I want to make it as as secure as possible. Due to the fact that only one solitary wireless device will be using the wireless connection, is there a way that i can set the wireless signals to only accept my laptop's mac address? or any way at all that i can tell it only to allow my laptop to connect?. There are also two wired pc's connected to the router, but they are ok. I'm just worried about unwanted traffic on my wireless connection.

Ok, here is what I am trying to do.

My neighbor has wireless internet and has given me their WPA code so I can use their signal. The problem I have is that my desktop is on the other side of the apt and I bought one of the USB Wireless adapters & plugged it in. It recognizes the network & I can login, however the signal is very weak/low and the signal keeps dropping.

I need to find a way to increase the signal strength to my bedroom. I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and was wondering if I could configure it to work on my desktop instead of the USB adapter (to gain better signal).

Is this possible and if not, what other things can I do to gain signal strength.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G help

doesn't work that way. You need a WRE54G on the side of the house that your neighbor is to grab that signal and retransmit it to your desktop. Takes some semi-advanced configuration though... I've always done it manually so you might have luck using the cd that comes with the device.

Question: Linksys WRT54G Qs

Bought the above-referenced router the other day. Set-up was a breeze and after a couple of hiccups, connectivity seems to be solid. However...I have noticed *considerable* increase in download times from the web. For example, on YouTube, prior to installing the router, I never had problems running any videos without lags. Now I lag and stop/start with every one I try to view. I now keep Task Mgr open at all times to observe performance and CPU use. My CPU% pegs with the WUSB54GC.exe process bouncing all over from 0% to ~ 80%. An average webpage stalls on loading. What can I do to get my previous download speeds back???

Answer:Linksys WRT54G Qs

I'm assuming that file is the connection utility that came with the installation CD?

Have you tried disabling that and using the Windows Connection Utility?

Have you scanned for virii or malware lately? Install anything other than the router?

Question: linksys wrt54g

I have a Linksys WRT54G v2.2 router attached to my PC. I have had it for a few years now and it has worked fine.My PC had a problem about 10 months back and I had to wipe it clean. I re installed every thing but could not fine the router disk so I went to the LINKSYS website and down loaded the router driver. set up was fine and it gave me WPA password. My pc crashed a few weeks back and the router would not work. I used the same router driver to reinstall it, however this time it did not give me a security WPA password. My internet worked slow in the evenigs, so I checked the wireless connection on a laptop that was connected via wifi and it showed my Linksys connection as unsecure. the internet was slow when other users in the house were not using it, I knew it was hacked by neighbours as there was no password on my wifi set up.My questions are:Why would the router setup do this (no wpa password) and is there a work around?I tried airsnare to track other illegal users, but it made no sence to me, is there any better free software?Does any one know why once the linksys router is setup I can not find its settings, or am I looking in the wrong place, ie, nothing in the program folder, no short cut on desk top or in program list. Question: linksys WRT54G

I am seeking a little help / opinion on the following issue....

Current network config... ISP is Mediacom cable, feeding a Motorola modem, followed by a symantec 100 hardware firewall appliance doing NAT. Then I have a linksys WRT54G ver 2 wireless router, nominally running WPA encrypted G mode to a linksys card in a laptop. Both the firewall and router have current firmware upgrades.

Downlink speed is ~2.5 Mbit/sec when my laptop is directly wired to the firewall via a 100 Mbit/sec eithernet connection. Downlink speed is ~1 - 1.5 Mbit/sec when directly wired to a port on the linksys router. Similarly I am seeing ~1 - 1.5 Mbit/sec via the encrypted wireless link. .... Hope that all makes sense!

Now the question .... does the WRT54G inherently exhibit slow throughput (way less than the marketing guys ratings), or is there a way to configure the unit such that I can get ~2.5 Mbit/sec on the output side of the router? At present my network is stable (no dropped connections) and usable. But ... I want to tweek things, if possible, to access the full bandwidth. Any suggestions on where to explore, and/or is there another wireless router on the market that is more robust.

TIA for any help... Jim

Answer:linksys WRT54G

the symantec appliance/router both nat.

how robust you think you need.
bite the bullet and get a t-3 line, you'll showup everybody you email.

are you really downloading at the values you mention or going to test sites/your own isp, there's a difference.

the fact that you have a 54g router doesn't mean you'll dl that fast.
it depends on your isp/plan if they have basic thru warp drive connection speeds and many will have you pay a premium for the faster connection.

some isp's limit dl to 1.5mb/s and ul 128-768kb. does yours?

Question: Linksys wrt54g

hey people

i am wanting to buy the linksys WRT54G broadband router. However i have seen the speedbooster version.

can anyone help me as to which one to buy and do they both come with the 'single button setup feature' to automatically detect IP addresses etc.

Please help me people i am stuck as to which one to buy

thanks

Answer:linksys WRT54G help

The speed-booster version is better, unless you plan on modifying it, then it depends on what models your modification works with.

do they both come with the 'single button setup feature' to automatically detect IP addresses etc.

Not that I know of.

If you plan on using custom firmware, or modding the device, you need to be aware that Linksys has changed from linux with recent models to avoid liscensing issues, so you may not be able to modify the device you get unless you specifically shop for a model that you know the modification will work with.

Question: Linksys WRT54G-UK

I am a trying to set up a wireless network for the first time using a Linksys WRT54G-UK broadband router and a Speedtouch 330 modem. I seem to have got stuck on the basic hardware configuration because I can't see how the modem connects to the router as well as the phone point. Is it that I need a router that will accept a usb connection?I look forward to any ideas. Thank you

Answer:Linksys WRT54G-UK

Unfortunately, you have bought the wrong router for what you want to do. Your router is suitable for use with Cable Broadband (NTL & Telewest) where the supplied modem supports an ethernet connection. You cannot use a USB modem with a router and, for ADSL broadband via the phone line, you need a combined "Router/ADSL Modem" which replaces your existing modem.

Question: Linksys WRT54G

Helping my son with an issue. He has a WRT54G router that he's been connected to for about three years. Today his Modem was giving him problems and the cable provider replaced it. They worked him through the registration process while he was wired into the modem. Afterwards, he attempted to connect to the router wirelessly. He was able to connect to the network but not the internet.

His system is an HP Laptop (sorry, don't have the model). He is running Vista home. The diagnosis said the issue was with the DNS.

We checked the cables and connections and the appear correct and good. He rebooted the computer, modem, and router. (Acutally, he unplugged them all and the restarted them. )

We could Ping the router, we cabled into the router and still couldn't connect to the internet. We checked the settings, released the DCHP and refreshed the DCHP. Nothing.

We reset the router to factory default and configured again. Nothing. Cable company says it's the router. Linksys won't provide the answer for less than $50.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Linksys WRT54G

Well, Don't ask me why, but out of frustration, I had him power down the Modem and power it back up again, and this time it worked. Thank you for those who took the time to read this. And I hope anyone who searches for an answer in the future gets a quick fix from here.

I come home tonight and my router appears to be dead. I've hit the reset button and tried it in many different outlets in the house and I don't get any power lights coming on.

I'm assuming she's dead...? Probably due to a crappy surge protector which I just found out seems to have short in the cord. The surge protector is now in the trash.

Any other options to troubleshoot or am I resolved to buy a new router tomorrow?

Suggestions on a new router?

Thx.

I've recently got a Linksys WRT54G so that I could connect my step-dads computer and mine together so I could have access to the internet. Unfortunatly, my step-dad does his banking over the internet, and he is concerned about people connecting to the wireless router and hacking his bank account.

what is the most secure way to set up the wireless network? and would that protection be any good against people trying to hack in?

Thanks

Answer:Linksys WRT54G Security

BRAVO! You asked and you're concerned.

In short YES you need encryption and NOT the WEP kind -- WPA or WPA2 are
secure.

Let's chat re online security with banking.

1) the Bank will use HTTPS:// on its url; this is an encrypted link from the
browser to the bank.

2) ALL your systems should be running a firewall

3) the Wireless WPA security sets between your router and the wireless user/browser.

4) your systems will then reject foreign users attempting to access your
LAN, and thus not get access to File Shares, user files, and/or User cookies.

If you have Firefox, set the preferences to Clear Private Data upon exit
and then after a Banking session, QUIT the browser or at least use
Tools->Clear Private Data.

If you visit a HOTSPOT, NEVER perform any banking transactions or let your
Pop3 Email Client access your email on the ISP. Instead, use the Webemail
from your ISP.

First off... I hate AOL, always have, always will, but the person I am helping refuses to get rid of it because they think it is more "convienent" than a real ISP.

Anyhow, this person has AOL broadband and wanted to add a wireless network to his home. Ok no big deal, we get a Linksys WRT54G since I know he does not have a router or anything beyond the XP SP2 firewall.

So I first try setting it up like I would on a regular network, but of course it wont authenticate with AOL.

Then I decide to forget trying to secure the desktop computer, threw a second NIC in the computer and tried to configure ICS. Well I tested it, and ICS is working and packets are getting routed. The problem is the AOL creates a hidden PPP WAN miniport that I can not use ICS over (does not show up in Network Connections except for a brief second when connecting or disconnecting). So the computer is routing from one NIC to the other like it should with ICS on, but it is not using the AOL connection. So basically it does not work.

Any suggestions? I think if I could turn ICS on on the PPP WAN Miniport (I'm guessing this is just the PPoE driver) that it would work, but with it hidden I don't see that happening easily.

Answer:Broadband AOL and Linksys WRT54G

AOL is really not uniform in this regard. it really depends on who is providing the actual DSL connection.

Sometimes you can use regular PPPoE on the router or miniport on XP like:

[email protected]/password

if the dsl provider have them statically routed to the aol edge device then you would peobably need to auth with america online/no password, yes there is a space.

some routers don't like the space, some routers like linksys have firmware you can download that will actually include aol dsl as an option alongside pppoe/pptp/heart/ et cetera.

don't ask me how i know this.

also is you have 9.0 SE you could probably use port magic to automatically do this for you IF ITS A NEW NETWORK. if it's a pre-existing network, it will mess it up.

okay, so i've had my linksys router up and running for a couple weeks now and it has been runnign great, up until I flashed it. Before I get into that though, here's my environment:

HTPC - WinXP SP2 fully updated - Dlink 802.11b PCI NIC
Workstation - WinXP SP2 - Netgear WG311 802.11g v2 NIC
Gaming rig - WinXP SP2 - Netgear WG311 v1 NIC
Laptop - WinXP SP2 - Orinoco 802.11b Silver PCMCIA
Each machine was updated and working fine (except for the HTPC). All the 802.11g cards connected at 54Mb/s all the time and had no problems. The HTPC would continuously negotiate from 11 to 5.5 to 2 to 1 Mb/s..not in that order all the time, but would always renegotiate it's speed depending on it was being used.

Then I decide to update it to the latest version for security purposes (2.04.4). I reset it, power cycled it..the works.

Now the HTPC still has it's problems...however now my workstation is having the same problems... It cannot hold a 54Mb/s connection. The only thing that has changed was the flashing of the router. I called Linksys, but their 2nd tier support denies the router has any problem since the 802.11g-v2 NIC connects just fine even though the 802.11g-v1 cannot. The workstation and game station are literally right next to each other, antenaes at the same position.

I know standards are standards...but something is off here.

Am I wrong in continuing to argue with Linksys about this router? No matter what revision of firmware I use, same problems occur.

I am using a Linksys Router, (WRT54G), and a Linksys PCI Card, (WMP54G). On my old PC I was running XP PRO, on my new one, I'm running XP Home SP2. I took the wireless card from my old PC and installed it on my new one, loaded all the same drivers but I cannot get it to connect. I see the signal strength, but when I try to connect to it, I can't. I've tried both letting windows configure my wirless connections and letting the Linksys utility do it. Neither will work. Just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I took the card out of my new PC and put it back in my old PC and it worked just fine. Do I need to maybe upgrade the firmware on my router to accomidate SP2??? Please help....

Answer:Linksys WRT54G issues with XP SP2?

Hello SybERkrimInAL and welcome to TECHSPOT!!

One: Windows XP Service Pack 2 sucks, it is very strict base on the setting and drivers. Put your wireless PCI card in ur new computer, wait until your Windows finish load everythings, uninstall the Microsoft Driver for Wireless and install your Retail driver. should work from now on.

Two: Make sure your internet or incoming cable or plug stay off the WAN. plug it in #1 instead WAN.

Three: Maybe you should upgrade your firmware, but not yet, if you are willing to format your new computer, install the SP1 first then try it out to see if it works.

Hello,

I recently purchased a Linksys Wireless expander WRE54G. I cannot get it to lock in with my Dell TrueMobile Wireless B/G router.
Someone gave me a WRT54G router and was going to try that with the expander but it does not have the software disk with the WRT54G.
Is there a recsource for the WRT54G software. I have looked all over for the firmware and cannot see mto find it. When I hook it up, I cannot even get the hardwired computer to work off one of the ports. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Answer:Software for Linksys WRT54G?

Reset it by holding "reset" button from the back while you unplug and replug power cord.
Plug your network cable to one of the LAN ports, and restart your pc. you should get somewhere in 192.168.1.xxx or 192.168.0.xxx
Factory default ip for the linksys router is 192.168.1.1
That being said, if you're trying to use WRT54G as a "Access Point", you're going to change the settings and have it connected by wire on LAN ports between routers.

Just bought the linksys wrt54g wireless router. All the LAN connected PCs work fine. The configuration on my laptop works fine too. My problem, i often have to on my PC to enable the wireless signal so that my laptop can be used. But most of the time, after i have selected the saved the settings, the LED for wireless signal will not light up. I tried accessing the config page and try all over again. The config show that the wireless signal is enabled, but not the LED light. I try using my laptop to access the network, but cant find the signal. So i unplug and connect back the power cord for the router, then the LED light up.

Is it a firmware problem or hardware problem? Have anyone experience this?

Hello fellow Hard Forumites.

I don't normally post to the hard forums, because I don't normally have anything to say. However, I am now stumped with a problem that should be so simple I shouldn't need to post it here.

One of my buds had an ancient D-Link router that didn't want to recieve DHCP updates from his provider (Charter). No problem, I said -- just go grab a new linksys WRT54G turn on remote administration, and I'll set it up.

Well, long story short -- it works fine for about 5 minutes. At the end of the 5 minutes, only web traffic works. He can't play games online (Eve, Battlefield, Counterstrike, whatever), can't use IM, can't do anything but surf the web. And even that seems to work only every other request.

I had my bud take back the router twice, and all of them exhibit the same problem. I've disabled all the firewall settings, changed anything else I can think of, and no matter what it works fine for less than five minutes, and then bam, nothing again.

Please Hard Forum -- you're my only hope!

Thanks!

XBOX can get online fine thru the new router but the PC shows a "network cable is unplugged" message, like it would if it wasn't connected to anything. Tried all the ports and still got the same thing. When I hook my PC direct to my modem (BEFCMU10) it detects the connection and when I hook back to the old router it also detects it. Any ideas as to what could be causing my PC to not see the new wireless router at all? Am I missing something obvious here?

I have two PC's that connect to a Linksys WRT54G router.
One of the PC's was online and I think it got hacked.
The hacker got in through the wireless connection in the router.
I removed all PC's from connecting to the router and what I found is that the internet light flashes for traffic. Is this just standard internet traffic or is someone using the router? Is there anyway I can tell any IP addresses using the router?
Is DHCP more secure than static?
The safety measures I took was to enable the "Wireless MAC filter", which won't get me very far. Tomorrow I'm going to look at using WPA but I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions?

Thanks.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G security

Static is not necessarily more secure, but that way you can limit the range of PCs that can connect to only those that the router allows. The MAC-filter does the same, and is an extra security that you should definitely use.
You MUST activate the firewall in your router (if it has one) and set it to "Stealth" mode if possible. On top of that you need to install a software firewall on each PC, as well as AV-software.
Browse to www.grc.com and see how secure your PC is.

Since there have been many posts recently "What wireless solution should I choose?, cry cry cry" and I keep answering with the same answer, here is a post that should answer some questions.

Why should I purchase a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router?
- This router runs the 802.11g standard (54MPbs)
- This router has good performance and documentation right out of the box.
- The range is not phenominal but it ranks very high amongst others in my book.

I keep hearing about this "3rd Party Firmware" for the WRT54G/WRT54GS, what is it?
- There are a few options you have with the WRT,
WiFi-Box, Sveasoft's Firmware, and HyperWRT

With Sveasoft there are a few different versions to choose from. Read the documentation carefully and choose which one you would like to go with. I personally recommend the later versions of Alchemy.

Options I have seen in the Alchemy revision firmwares
- Wireless Bridging (The bridged WRT can connect clients via wireless AND via CAT5)
- XMIT adjustment options (Bumping up juice to antennas for extended range)
- The whole WDS feature just blows me away, read documentation because that is a whole 'nother scenario to dig into.

I'll add to this when I can think of something I may of forgotten.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G --EVERYONE READ

Good info. I swear by this router and the WAP54G for my home/home office clients. It should be noted that the stock firmware supports bridging as well, but the alternate firmwares have a little more flexability in this regard.

Edit: Don't forget EWRT and www.linksysinfo.org.

Well im on the only thing i dont like about this router compared to my D-link. On the D-link you can set up a static IP to a certain MAC address while DHCP is on. I have friends come over and what not that want an IP fast. And they are too stupid to set up a static IP. So what im wondering is if there is a way for my NIC to always get the same address from the router based on my MAC without having to totally set up static networking. The reason i need this is because i need ports forwarded for some programs, but if my IP changes i have to do a lot of work to reset them all.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G static IP

for static dhcp based off mac you have to use a third party firmware. such as dd-wrt.

Hi there guys, I have put a hacked version of wrt54g firmware onto the box and now have snmp enabled. I was wondering if anyone knows a way of adding an inbuilt bandwidth log so that I know how much I have used, or even a program, other than wall wathcer, prtg and mrtg that is simple to use and provdies totals and graphs, something like DU meter but for the whole network, or even just text infromation in the router. Thanks

Answer:Linksys wrt54g bandwidth

What hacked firmware are you using?

I know a quick easy way to setup the WRT54G routers is the DD-WRT firmware using the RFlowCollector add-on. This is what I am currently using at home. I haven't found a way for the monitoring machine with RFlowCollector to retain any information past a reboot or crash though. So I suppose that's its limiting factor.

I'm sure there are alternate options, but this was the most hassle-free for me.

Good luck!

The WRT54G version 5.0 uses completely different operating system than previous WRT45Gs. Its based on VxWorks. I'm not sure about the problem you are mentioning. I would try resetting the router back to factory defaults. Also considering upgrading it to the latest version available on Linksys.com.

For the last couple of weeks or so, my Linksys router will cut out once every five minutes - well, it will cut out my internet connection. I can still connect to my router when it's been disconnected from the net.

It seems to last long enohgh for MSN to disconnect, and then everything is fine... for 5-10 minutes, maybe 20... then it comes back.

Any thoughts/ideas?

The lights on your modem all stay lit, right?

I just installed this router. I have internet through roadrunner/timewarner. In my area, a standard account gets 5 meg down and 384 up. When I am connected to the router by cat5, I get about 4800 down. When I use my onboard 802.11g wireless (Asus P5AD2E-Premium) to connect to it via wireless, my connection shows 54meg... But when I run a speedtest I only get about 2 meg down. If I disable the wireless and use my ethernet port, I get 4.8 meg down. Any ideas? I've already upgraded to the latest firmware.

Answer:Linksys wrt54g question

Welcome to the joys of wireless Even though your connection is negotiated at 54Mbps, you'll rarely seen anything close to that. Though you shouldn't be below 5Mbps. But if you add in encryption like WEP or WPA, it gets much, much worse.

I just ran a test here at home on my laptop, connection is 3000/256, router is a WRT54G:
Using an 11Mbps 802.1b connection (WPA) - 1500/233
Using an ethernet connection - 2700/231

There are a few things that might help you, though.
1) If you only have G cards, then go into the wireless settings on the router and change the default mode from mixed to G only. That may help.
2) You can also try enabling frameburst in the advanced options page.

I have a win7 pc that has been using a linksys wrt54g router to an ISP cable modem. Has worked for about a year with no problems. Suddenly, my wifi has died. I cant connect through the linksys and I cant see wifi using my iphone.

I tried to connect to the router on ports 1-4 using the ip address 192.168.1.1 but all I get is "local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration"

So, do we think think the router has died? I tried to power it off and on and did the reset for 30 sec but still no help.

I also tried to connect straight to the router using my XP laptop but nothing...

Any ideas?

Answer:linksys wrt54g problems

I have the exact same router. I'm running 3 systems with Seven, one with XP, one with Vista, 3 iPod touch devices a Nintendo Wii and 2 networked printers. Zero problems. Most are on the WiFi, only my file server is direct-connect.

Sounds a little like the router has just crashed. Doesn't happen very often but it does happen. Try a hard-reset using the recessed reset button on the back. If, after that, you can't even connect to it with a cable directly then yeah ... yer probably looking at a dead unit.

I have to set up a linksys router for my sisters computer. I know nothing about them when it comes to dsl. It is sbc yahoo dsl, and i thought it would go easy, but dident.

I connected the router, reset everything, and the main computer downstairs can not get on (sisters computer is going to be wireless)

As soon as i plug in the linksys router, i try to connect to dsl, and this is what i get

Error Connecting to DSL Connection
Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPOE)..

Error 678. The remote computer did not respond.

Redial

Answer:SBC Yahoo Dsl with Linksys wrt54g

Really what you want to do is go into the router configuration and set up PPPoE on the Connections tab. Put in the login and password that they are currently using to get online. Then check the router status page to see if it connected and got an IP successfully.

Then, set each computer to Automatically get an IP address. Then set up Wireless MAC Address Filtering, and WEP/WPA as per the directions in the user manual.

Doing this, the router makes and maintains the connection to the DSL service, as opposed to each computer doing so. Then each computer gets assigned an address from the router, as well as other relevant into it needs to surf the net.

I have a question for you guys: I used to have a US Robotics USR805416 802.11g Wireless Turbo PCI Adapter and a WRT54G linksys router. Although the connection wasnt always great ( resulting in disconnections etc ) I coult connect to the internet. The PCI adapter broke down and I just bought a new adapter but this time from a different brand ( hoping it would work a bit better -_- ). This was a D-Link 520+ PCI adapter.

Now I installed the software that was included with the card and a get a weak connection to my router ( like I used to get with my USR card ). The only difference is that now I can't connect with the internet
This is extremely frustrating knowing that this new card cost me 50 EUR and I don't feel like buying another one unless necessary.

The distance between the router and the adapter is kinda big but I notice that the antenna of the D-Link adapter is exactly the same as the USR.

I am completely clueless and I hope you guys can help me a hand here.
Oh yeah. P.S. I'm using Windows ME atm (yeah yeah I know it sucks...)

Thanks in advance!

My wireless network is a Linksys WRT54g and 2 computers running WMP54g and 1 with a dell wireless. My computer has a Linksys NIC, and I'm the closest to the router having to only go through 1 wall and about 10 feet of distance. I have no problems on my part. The computer with the Dell is 2 rooms away (approx. 30ft. away) and goes through many more walls and the other Linksys NIC is 3 rooms away (approx. 40 - 50ft. away). They can both download at the rated speed of the ISP and browse pages and what not, but when it comes to gaming, they get terrible packet loss and high pings, 3x the ping of mine sometimes. They even get dropped sometimes. This problem used to not occur when the router was in my room, but I have since moved it to another room adjacent to mine. Firmware and drivers are all up to date, transmitting power is at 100% and I changed the channel to 11 in case the default was interfering with other wireless products in the house (even though this was never a problem before). These solutions did not fix the problem. Could this all be because I simply moved it 1 room over and now it's too far away for them?

Answer:Linksys WRT54g problems

it could easily be becaused you moved it.

have you looked at any of the other firmware, i believe some of them give you increases signal. i think the other firmwares are hyperwrt and alchemy

I set up a Linksys WRT54G for my neighbors, but I left the default password and username (Thought both were blank default, or atleast user=administrator)...Well i guess someone hacked into the router or whatnot and changed the wep...and possibly username/pass...is my only option to hard reset the router? What are the default user/pass for the wrt54g? Thanks

Answer:Linksys WRT54G Hacked...

totally wrong forum, but its admin for password nothing for user name. If they changed the WEP you probably need to hard reset the router. I'm getting pissed that all my damn neighbors have their routers with no passwords or anything, I think i'm gonna go in and change their SSID to PUTAPASSWORDON! or something.

I got EarthLink DSL and a Linksys WRT54g router. How do I setup the router to allow the computers connected to it to use the internet also?

I already set up my router to connect to the internet, and my computer works fine. My computer can also access the 2nd computer, and visa-versa. But the second computer's internet does not work.

I tried setting up ICS, but is it possible with one nic? I set my network connection as my internet connection, but my network setup wizard cannot be completed.

So what do I have to do to share my dsl?

I want to have to use a proxy or w/e as my last resort. Thanks.

Answer:Sharing DSL with Linksys WRT54g

Ok first make sure the dsl router is connected to the WAN(not uplink) port. The two computers connect to the numbered ports. You may have set up bridging on the modem or call up earthlink and ask them if you need to change any settings on the modem. I know for sprint I have to telnet into the modem and tweak some stuff for the dsl to work through the wrtg54...but it does. The default settings on the router should work without a lot of tweaking.

Yes you need two nics(or 1 nic one modem to share dialup) to use ICS, but the WRTG should handle the job fine.

If your two computers can see each other, the router is working. If the second computer cant get net it is either a problem on the second computer or perhaps the bridging issue I encountered with sprint. Again you will have to check with earthlink to make sure you dont have to do any gymnastics to get the dsl to share.

I'm trying to connect a wrt54g v5 linksys router. Its connected to the internet and to my computer but I can't use my internet. It shows my subnet mask as 255.255.254.0 and then switched to 255.255.240.0 a little while later. Is that the problem because the router is set at 255.255.255.0. Its connecting using DHCP settings and it shows my default gateway as 216.232.176.254 in my local settings but its actually 192.168.1.1. I'm also missing my host and domain address.

WHAT THE **** is going on? How do I get the subnet mask back to 255.255.255.0?

Hi folks.Im just looking for some advice here, I have had a read through the topics on wireless network on a virgin broadband conection. Is the Linksys WRT54G the same as the WRT54GSUKwill the WRT54GSUK be ok for a cat5 wired conection for two desktops.manny thanks mr edd.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G / WRT54GSUK

The WRT54G is the standard 54Mbps version of the router. The WRT54GS is the version with SpeedBoost incorporated and, when used in conjunction with a compatible Linksys Wireless Network Adapter with SpeedBoost should connect at 125Mbps. I have this kit (although I no longer use the Linksys router) and have yet to be convinced that there is any speed increase at all.I actually contacted Linksys and asked if, in the adapter's Properties, it should show as connected at 125Mbps rather than 54Mbps. They couldn't (or wouldn't) give me a definitive answer.I mainly use a D-Link DI-524, or Netgear WGR614, rather than the Linksys which had a habit of losing connections to networked computers about twice a day. I think the WRT54G was a more reliable product than the SpeedBoost WRT54GS version.

I'm now trying to set it up, however when I use 'Admin' for the user name and password the router is not granting me access. It has been some time since the person used it and they cannot remember if the created a password. Is there any way to restore factory settings so that I may reconfigure the router?

I am trying to use a second WRT54G router that I have on hand as a WAP. I want it to connect to my main router (which is also a WRT54G), and access the internet so that I can use DirecTV's OnDemand functionality.

I have done everything imaginable to try to make this work and still cannot get my DVR to connect to the internet. I am making a connection to my main router. My DTV receiver shows me that I'm making that connectivity, but when trying to connect to the internet, it consistently fails.

I have opened up ports 80 and 8080 on Port Triggering on the main router as I have seen recommended in DTV's tech forum logs. I have ensured that my second router (the one I'm using as a WAP) has a completely different IP address than my main router. I have plugged them together and successfully "cascaded" them. I have set all of the IP setting on the DTV receiver to be the default settings for my network, including DNS.

I'm not sure what else to do. The fact that I can connect to the network tells me that I've got the connectivity set up properly. I'm guessing at this point, the problem lies in the main router and something that is blocking the second router from getting to the internet.

Any ideas???

Answer:Using Linksys WRT54G as WAP for DirecTV

You said that you are using the second router as a WAP, but you've also said that you have cascaded them. Does the second router have an AP mode, and that's what you're using? The "universal" way to use a router as a WAP is as follows.

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there i... Read more

Hello there, Im looking for help for seting up a pair of wrt54g routers with my laptop. So this is the problem:

I have a Laptop with wifi that I setup to obtain an IP and DNS automatically in the properties of the connection.

I have a wrt54g in my home and another wrt54g at my office, their gateways for Internet are: home: 192.168.1.1 and office: 192.168.148.17. My problem is that everytime that I move from my home to my office or viceversa I have to set up the default gateways of my laptop MANUALLY to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.148.17, so I want to know what I have to do to change the default gateways on my laptop automatically without setting up manually.
Note.- I enabled DHCP in my routers, so the IPs are assigend automatically to the laptop.
Thanks in advance!!!

Answer:Please help me with a wrt54g Linksys router!!!

first let start with
both routers should be static at best set to 192.168.1.1 as default gateway
disable dhcp all connected machines on this lan should have the numbers start after last digit 1
IE:192.168.1.2 to 255 you can leave dynamic if thats what your provider needs a with dhcp disabled the router and connected machines will not change address's
you don't say how many machine are on each router but should not matter
they to routers are not connected by a cat 5e cable but your trying to connect via wan internet
you need to set up a vpn config
routers have to be able to do this or try link 1
link 2
client software I have not used it
the ip number you need is the isp wan address should see this in status of router
this is the address to connect to other machine

I'm trying to hook the wrt54g wireless linksys router up to a westell 2200 dsl modem. I go to the setup dic and run it with out the router in line. It get the config. off my modem and it tells me to hook the router up set it upbut tells me that the router is not connected to the internet. It then tells me to shut the modem down then restart it. Thanks for any help you can give me

Answer:wrt54g linksys router

The Westell 2200 DSL modem/router combo defaults to LAN address 192.168.1.1. My guess is that the Linksys also defaults to the 192.168.1.x subnet. You can check that by looking at an ipconfig connected to each router; also the manual on your CD will tell you the default. If that is the case, reset the Linksys to factory default settings and pick one of the following options.

1. Change the LAN subnet of one router to something else; say, 192.168.3.x. Change its Dhcp server address range accordingly if it doesn't change automatically. This is probably the easiest change to make, but is the inferior option.

2. Configure the Westell into bridge mode, making it act as a modem only.

3. Configure the Linksys as an ethernet switch and wireless access point.

JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Do not install or re-install the firewall until after you have the system functioning properly

Is 802.11g fast enough to stream IPTV? If yes, how?

Thanks all.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G & IPTV

802.11g has a nominal data transfer speed of 54Mbps, although in practice it is likely to be closer to 30Mbps. Unless you have an internet connection of 20Mbps or more, the limitations of 802.11g aren't going to impact on your internet download speeds.

In any case, you can test for your self by comparing performance with a "wired" ethernet connection to your router, which will run at 100Mbps.

OK ... I'm sure this might have been asked, but i'll try to make it quick..

I have a Linksys WRT54G (ver. 6) and occasionally, it drops connection(common) but it's not getting any signal from my cable modem. So no computer in the house (wired or wireless) can get an internet connection..

The cable modem is fine, as if I plug a PC directly to the cable modem, I can get on the internet, so It has to be something with the Router. This is my 2nd Linksys router. I would try a different router, but I recently setup a WAP54G to bridge a wired network I have in a different location of my home, and i am unsure if i go with a different brand router that my WAP54G will function with say a D-Link or Netgear Router....

I tried updating the Firmware, but no such luck with this..
It happens like once a week or so.

Any suggestions?!

Thanks in Advance...

Hello,

Just curious if anyone has experienced this issue with a Linksys router. A user at my company is having problems accessing our VPN when connected to his wireless router. He will get connected and then lose the connection. I had him ping the IP address of the VPN server and it actually loses 2 of the packets on one try and all on another. This is happening on his company issues laptop and a desktop PC in his home. After doing a traceroute from our network to his IP address assigned by his ISP, it times out after hitting hops on the ISP's network. I advised him to contact his cable company to see what the issue is. They had him disconnect the router an plug directly into the cable modem and it works fine. As a first step he is going to purchase a new router to try and see if that reparis the problem. If not the issue will again be in his cable line setup or something. Has anyone ever had a linksys router fail like this?

I bought two of these and flashed them to the latest DD-WRT mega bios. I have both of them set up as bridges. One is hooked up to my Xbox 360 and connects and stays connected to my wireless signal flawlessly ("local and internet"). The other is hooked up to my main desktop and it will connect to the wireless signal, but will soon drop the internet connection while remaining connected to the local network. I have swapped the routers back and fourth (resetting in between and not) and the 360 always connects perfectly and the desktop always drops the internet connection. Any suggestions?
