"Unable to determine ransomware" - only have screen shot, please advise

Question: "Unable to determine ransomware" - only have screen shot, please advise

Ref case: SHA1: d752629e7fed54d4ccc7163e8f6bbb4efe2a558c

Would be most appreciative if you could help me identify this ransomware.  It has infected both my mother's and my father's computers.  I am only able to provide a screen shot of the ransomware message, which I uploaded to the ID Ransomware tool.  Unable to figure out how to attach the screen shot to this post, however.

It is a white text, blue background message, with two additional warning popups from a "Microsoft Support Desk" that provides a toll free number to call.  It does not ask for money in the message, but my father (unfortunately) did call the number, at which point they asked him for a lot of information about his computer and network settings, and eventually were able to take control of his computer by doing a screen share, at which point my father says the cursor was moving around on the screen by itself and lots of windows were being opened and changes were being made.  Then, the "help desk" people demanded money and threatened to report him to the authorities if he did not pay a fee for them to fix the problems, citing evidence of "illegal activities" they had located on his computer.  My father is a 71 year old retiree with not so much as a parking ticket his entire life!

Thanks very much in advance for your help

Preferred Solution: "Unable to determine ransomware" - only have screen shot, please advise

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have the ThinkPad T60p (2007 model) and Lenovo's spec sheet says it supports up to 4GB but not on the Intel 945PM and GM chipsets. However I'm unable to tell which chipset I have. I tried Belarc and it didn't mention any of the chipsets that Lenovo mentions. Does Windows (XP) or Lenovo have a utility I can use to identify this or all of the hardware I have?

Answer:Max RAM? Unable to determine hardware

Welcome to the forum!

While your ThinkPad will recognize 4GB of RAM in BIOS, only 3GB will be usable regardless of OS used, due to a chipset limitation.

This holds true for all R60/e, T60/p, X60/s/T and Z61e/m/p/t ThinkPads.

Occasionally, my entire system will just hang and either be forced to restart, or, very rarely, it will be able to regain control and continue working. I've ran memtest and memtestx86 to determine if the cause is my ram, but both tests showed the ram is working fine. The cause could be my GPU, an ASUS R9 290, but I have already done two RMA's to have the card repaired.

To get a bit of insight on these BSOD's, my system is very unstable for most games. When running Rust, my system seems to be extremely stable and can run the game for eternity. Whilst watching videos on youtube, the system is somewhat stable, the potential of a crash is still there, but I am free to do as I please for hours. Now, when playing other games, such as: League of Legends, Garry's Mod, Fallout: New Vegas, Bordelands 2, the system is extremely unstable. The most I can get is a few hours and crashing is extremely frequent.

I have been told that doing a bios update fixes most problems of an unstable system, but my motherboard rejected the latest bios that I tried to use in the update. I am afraid I have nothing left up my sleeve, and thus, must turn to these forums.

I have used the DM Log Collector program, so the ZIP is attached below. I am hoping to have this problem resolved soon as I must escape this elo hell in League of Legends and reach my true potential: Challenjour.

Answer:Strange BSODs, Unable to Determine Cause Alone

So let's go through all that I do know and what I think I know.

System is somewhat unstable. BSODs are occurring a few times a day and seem to be reducing their occurrence as the days go on.

When the system crashes, there is not Blue Screen displayed, the system automatically restarts.

It would appear that Google Chrome could be possibly causing these crashes as I am able to play games for a longer period of time with Google Chrome closed. When it is open, the system will crash more frequently and even crash whilst I am watching videos or looking on various forums.

Some games retain stability for longer, Rust, World of Warcraft. Other games have some stability to them, League of Legends, Fallout: New Vegas. And other games will almost always crash within the first hour, Garry's Mod, Borderlands 2. So these crashes really depend on a factor. A factor that I do not know because I cannot read these .dmp files and someone has yet to view this thread and read them to me.

It's really a game of guessing and I am losing.

Heya!

I seem to be getting the BSOD when playing games, most recently during a game of Dota2.

When the BSOD does occur my computer hangs and a weird, electronic - it's hard to describe - whining sound comes through the speakers.

I've run the SF_Diagnostic_Tool.exe as per the instructions. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Answer:BSOD Unable to determine origin

Hi bickas.

Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall the program at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from Disk-Tools.com, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :
Double click to open it.
Click this button only:

If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.
Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.
Click on the Start button
Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the “Startup” tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
Apply > OK
Accept then restart.
I would suggest you to uninstall Viscosity Virtual Adapter V9.1, at least as a test.

Been receiving numerous BSOD for months. I never was able to determine the exact cause the first time. Most of the time the error occurs during a game such as Skyrim, Diablo 3. However, sometimes the error happened when watching videos on YouTube or even while idle.

Every time I thought I fixed it, I get a new one. Most of the time it was IRQ less than or equal. I swapped to an older card and it was less frequent, but still got them. Im back to the original card and still get the errors. Sometimes going days without errors, sometimes cant even go 20 minutes without one.

Im a bit lost in the dark on this one, documentation on the web point every direction, blaming video drivers, windows programs and even wireless adapters.

Hi,
this has been a long standing issue.... I have never been able to send emails using an SMTP mailer. Never!

I am on a Mac (with Parallels). I use Bluehost for hosting. I have even tried a VPN to get this resolved and nothing works. Ever. But I am getting close to the heart of the issue after many years of trying (This issue has financially crippled my business - so any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated)

Here are some of the things that I found online that may be of use...

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/300171
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1168317/check-status-of-one-port-on-remote-host
http://forums.holdemmanager.com/manager-general/317012-unable-connect-remote-server.html

Also I saw something relating HIVE from Microsoft which relates to user profiles

I am at my witts end trying to resolve this.

Thanks

XP updaes will not install, and it takes 10 minutes for it to start up. Browsers don't always take me where I want to go.

ETC.

I reviewed a similiar situation in another post and am going to try those tecniques.

Answer:My Dell 9400 is infected, but I am unable to determine by what.

That slow start could be caused by too many items in startup, a failing hdd, a very fragmented hdd or malware.
Suggest you backup all important files or create an image of the entire drive and store it on an external medium. If the
hdd is failing, the more you use it the more likely it will become unbootable and unable to recover files.

Use CCleaner to cleanup the crud. Once you have done that open CCleaner and click on Tools and choose Startups.
At the bottom of that page you will see a button when clicked will allow you post the list of programs presently starting up
at boot. Post that list back here.

After you have backed up the computer and posted the list of startups you can run some programs to hopefully find and
remove whatever adware and malware is on the computer.

Use the instructions for Rkill, MBAM, AdwCleaner, Junkware Removal Tool, and Eset online scanner in your previous topic for a different computer.
Make sure that all active security programs are stopped from running/ disabled before running the scans.

I built this computer about a year ago. Things were running smooth up until recently. I m usually pretty good at figuring out what is causing Errors on my computers but I cannot figure out what is causing this one. I do see kernel Errors in the event log but that is only about a bug check after it crashes.
I reinstalled windows
Updated the firmware on my C Drive and Motherboard
Installed windows updates
updated by graphics card drivers
Ran disk check on my C drive
I have attached all the logs. Thanks in advance for all the help.

Hi,  I have recently bought a Lenovo G580.  Lenovo Solution Center has a permanent warning saying it is 'Unable to determine the warranty status'.  I have been onto the Lenovo support site, check warranty status page and enter the serial number, it says 'Machine Type and Serial not found in iBase'.  What does this mean?  How can I check the warranty status (bought from a reputable retailer, so I assume there's some kind of warranty attached) and how can I get rid of this message out of Lenovo Solution Center?!Thanks.

Hi,

I have this really annoying problem and I'm about to conclude that it's time to buy a new video card but I'm hoping there is another way to fix this.

Please Look Here: http://www.geocities.com/lorenzopelswijk/verticalbars.html

Those lines keep coming up every once and a while. Whenever they appear, the only way to remove them is to shut down my PC, wait for a couple minutes and then start it again.

Sometimes this happens after a couple of hours of running my PC, and sometimes it takes days. It's not stable at all.

I've scanned my PC for viruses and errors but nothing seems to fix the problem. I've updated to the latest ATI Radeon drivers with no luck. Also someone posted that he has this problem and tried to format his PC but still the same.

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (updgraded it to Pro long time ago by changing the BIOS).

If there is anyway I can fix this without replacing the card I would love to know how.

Thnaks in advance.

The first time I tried to paste it, I got a strange result, in that it just gave me a grey box, instead of the screenshot, thereafter, this started happening.

Hi,
I am currently trying to remove the Soca ransomware from my netbook. It is a Samsung Nc110. I've downloaded the HitmanPro virus scanner onto a bootable USB stick. However, it seems that the NC110 does not like to boot from the USB without fiddling in the BIOS. I've fiddled a bit and changed it so that booting from USB should be first priority, but whenever I go to the Boot Screen by holding Esc at startup, it doesn't detect the USB stick. Cross posted from here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/539032/soca-ransomware-unable-to-boot-from-usb/
I'm sure there's so,etching very obvious eluding me... Help! http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-serios-organised-crim-agency-ransomware
Update: I followed the guidance, but where I am stuck is booting with a USB from the Bios screen, as described above. It seems to be a particular problem for the samsung Nc110 netbook. Any ideas? Apologies as I am not sure which forum this is most suitable for!

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Hi, I'm new to the forums but I've got a hugely annoying virus,
I've recently become victim to the PCeU ransomware virus. As soon as it popped up I looked online for a solution. The first solution I came across was to start my laptop up in safemode, however on starting up my laptop, pressing f8 would do nothing. People also suggested starting it up and pressing shift with f8 but nothing happened.
So then I tried another solution which involved using HitmanPro Kickstart on a USB drive and starting the infected laptop with the usb plugged in. I read that on startup I should be prompted to press a key such as f10, f11 or f12. However it just loaded up to login screen straight away! I looked it up and for my laptop it's f12. I tried pressing this and it brings up the boot menu. However I can see the flash drive option on it, only "windows boot manager", "efi network 0 for ipv4" and "efi network 0 for ipv6"
So I went to move on to another solution until i realised it required a cd/dvd, which my laptop doesn't have....
So I'm kind of stuck and need a solution. My laptop is a Lenovo Y510P and is operating windows 8.1
Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully someone can help me. Cheers

Answer:Unable to get rid of PCeU Ransomware Virus

F1 to enter BIOS
Select security tab
Secure Boot - set to disabled
Click on "Reset to Setup mode"
Go to Startup and select UEFI/Legacy and set to Both
Press F10 to save and exit
As it reboots press F12 to select Boot devices
You should now see your USB drive - select it.
It should now boot from your USB drive if you have mabe it bootable with Hitmanpro kickstart.

I want a screen shot of my error I'm getting and I can't remember what to hit. I have XP.

Answer:How do I take a screen shot?

There should be a key on your keyboard that has "PrtSc", or "PrintScrn", or "Print Screen", or something else to that effect written on it; It lives up there near the "Scrool Lock" key. Press that "Print Screen" key, and the screen will go to your clipboard. Once in the clipboard you can paste it into almost any app, such as ms-paint. Once you have it in there, save the file as png, jpg, or gif (png is the nicest).

Dear Whiz Kids,

Im like the other chap who posted his concerns over the number of processes running. I have spent considerable time going thru a couple of sites recommended to me here that detail the various processes, but with limited success due to my limited intellect.

I would like to be able to post a list of processes or a screen shot of my task manager so that you good people might cast a knowing eye over it, but again I lack the know how.

Can anyone advise me please?
Ignorantly yours

Im wondering is there any way to get a screenshot capture on my computer? Im trying to get instructions from someone for my space on making my backround. They wanted me to take a capture of my codes im putting in and where im putting them to figure out why its not working for me. SO sent me a message showing his screenshot\capture and instructions for me to do the same only its not working. He told me to hit control and print screen at the same time, but when i did nothing happend? does this work?

Answer:how can i get a screen shot?

What you need to do is hit print screen (control is not necessary) and then paste (File>Paste) inside of an image program such as MS Paint, Fireworks, or even MS Word. If you are on a laptop you may need to use the Function key to use print screen.

Then save/export the image based on the options available in your particular program.

Let me know how it works,

Answer:screen shot

If you want to post a screenshot onto this forum then you can't.You can upload a screenshot to a web server and give us a link to it. Some people use Image Shack click here to do this, or if you have your own site already running you could load it onto that and post a web link to it as text in this forum.

Hi'a

I have a DVD I want to take some screen shots from for wallpaper. I am playing the DVD on my pc, using ASUSDVD XP. I pause the scene I want the image from....then press 'Print Screen' on my keyboard, then go to paint and paste the image there. But I can only see the black strip, top and bottom of the image (widescreen format) and a dull colour where the image should be.

Hmmmmmm??

I'd appreciate any feedback on this...

Thanks....Regards, Michaela

I am pretty sure the answer to the question is yes but thought i would post the question here just to make sure. I have a T30 laptop where every so often the screen will become scambled. The easiest way to define scambled would be if you have ever seen one of these screen that was cracked, you know how you get all those fancy colors around the cracked area, well that is pretty close to how the screen looks when it is scrambled and it is the entire screen. In order to get the picture back sometimes a simple bump to the side of the screen housing will suffice, other times just gently touching the screen, then there are the more severe times where you have to snap the screen with your finger or kind of squeeze the screen, Sometimes it comes back, sometimes it does not. I had first thought it was the ribbon cable going from motherboard to screen, I have replaced that and it still does it. Now I dont know if the monitor out connection on these laptops uses the same components as the onboard monitor, but I have pluged on an external monitor and that one continues to operate correctly even when the onboard monitor goes bezerk. The numbers on the back of the monitor are 11P8292 and 11P8297. Hope this helps and you can understand what I am attempting to say. Thanks and have a great day.

Answer:T30 : Is screen shot?

You might have a loose connection somewhere...I'd swap the LCD cable first, and if that doesn't help, the screen itself.Good luck.

Answer:how to screen shot?

Print screen copies your screen, then you can paste it into an image in paint, photoshop, etc.

There is a tool in windows 7 called "snipping tool" that can be used to take "snips" of the screen, much like a marquee tool or cropping tool in an image editor.

When you say it won't work properly, do you mean that it won't start at all, or something specific?

This the minimum requirements:

Hi. I realise it's my own fault for getting this virus, as I haven't been keeping Windows or programs up to date. I realise the importance of not only that, but also backing up 5 years worth of precious data! Ok...

I received the full screen ransomware UK police/ukash virus screen after several redirections from the Google search page. All I see now after booting up and inputing the windows password is a black screen with a smaller inset command prompt window.

I have tried to look for the commonly affected files as suggested by online guides, after booting into safe mode with command prompt, regedit. I can't seem to see them, but I doubt I have the knowledge to truly find them anyway.

I've scanned with the latest Hitman Pro 64 and it only finds 3 punkbuster files from Battlefield3/1942/2142.

I've tried scanning with Kaspersky rescue disc 10, after successfully (so it said) creating the bootable disc on USB flash drive. It won't give me the message to press any key to initiate the Kaspersky rescue disk, it goes straight to the Windows 7 logging in, password screen. I've tried 2 different USB drives. They both do the same. I don't have a functioning optical drive.

I hadn't created any restore points prior to this so I can't try that.

Would anyone possibly guide me through getting this thing off  of my hard drive? I think I have exhausted my limited knowledge, resource... Read more

Answer:Ransomware - Unable to see desktop. Windows 7 64bit

Developments! Kaspersky has been happily scanning my c drive for a while now. Currently at 26%, it may take some time. I'm hopeful, at least it's working.

I tried 2 usb flash drives, 2 different copies of Kaspersky and 3 different methods of creating the rescue disk, and after all that I think it may well have been a bios setting. Not 100% sure but Kaspersky's own flash drive writing tool created the one which is currently working hard.

Will update when it's done. If this works I will be dashing out, in elation, to buy an external hard drive to save all my precious shinies, then formatting the bast! BOoM! That will be soooo satisfying. /crosses everything.

You mean the 200K (approx) limit?

Do you have Irfan or some sort of photo editoring program? If not go here, read about it and download Irfan and the plug-ins.

http://www.irfanview.com/

1) To take your screen shot, press Print Screen key - or you can actually use Irfan to do it.
2) Once you have a screen shot, open it in Irfan (edit->paste).
3) Crop (cut out everything not needed). Resize. Save as a GIF file to your hard drive.
4) If a GIF turns out to still be too large, convert to a JPG and see it that helps. Most screen shots can be well below 200K.

I tried taking a screen shot by using the Print Screen Button on my keyboard but does not do it. On my other laptop which has Vista, it was easy but on this laptop, Win 7, I can't. I do have the snipping tool but I want to do it the other way. When I was able to do it, it would open up as a new image in my Paint Shop Pro. Any help appreciated. My laptop is a Toshiba

I didn't know whether to put this in the games forum or here, but I thought that as I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue, I'd put it in here.

Whenever I'm playing a game, my pc will freeze, with the image of whatever I was just doing stuck on the screen, in effect, a screen shot. The more demanding the game, the longer it will take to happen, so, using 4 games I own, Counter Strike: Source Team Fortress 2 > Left 4 Dead > Assassins Creed (read: CS:S will take longer than Tf2 etc). The only way to fix this is to restart my pc, using the button on the case, because as I said, it's totally frozen.

I'm fairly sure this isn't an overheating issue, I had my graphics card at around 55-60C (131-140F) while playing Left 4 Dead and my CPU at around 35-40C (95-104F) while playing Left 4 Dead.

My system configuration is as follows:

CPU: AMD Phenom 8450 (2.1GHz x3)
GPU: Palit ATi HD 4870 Sonic Dual Edition (1Gb)
RAM: 2Gb DDR2 800MHz (I don't know which brand)
Motherboard: J&W RX770-AM2+
PSU: OCZ GameXStream 600w
HDD: 500gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 RPM 32mb Cache
OS: Windows XP Home 32 Bit

If I've forgotten anything relevant/information, please let me know.

Help?

Hello. I am not able to get a screen shot. I press the Windows Logo key and the PrtSc key at the same time with no results. The screen doesn't dim and there are no screen shot folders (or other) in the picture folder. I've had this Aspire for close to 2 years and didn't know about the screen shot until recently. It has never worked... or has it? Thank you in advance for your help!

Every so often I read threads that have screenshots attached. In PCA this month there is a program called Screenhunter 4.0. Can anybody tell me if I can use this to help with problems that I have that would require a screenshot to help explain the problem or are there other programs or tricks of the trade that would suffice. J.B.

Answer:Screen Shot Software

Use 'print screen' to copy then paste into paint, or 'alt + print screen' to copy the active window.

Does anyone know any alternative ways of getting a screen shot in XP? I'm trying to capture an image of an application that I am using but print screen will only capture the main part of it. There is a popup box that is the most important aspect of the screen grab but it is just not being captured.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Answer:How to get a screen shot in Windows

Hold alt and hit printscreen, it'll grab the current item only (i.e. the popup box). Does that help?

First, you need to locate the Prt Scrn button on your keyboard. Normally it should be End button on the Dell laptop. You will need to Press Fn + End button simultaneously then open a Paint app in the operating system and paste (Ctrl+ V) it and edit the picture if you want.

Hello,
I need some help picking out the best free screen shot program. Please let me know what you use. Thanks.

Answer:Best Screen Shot Program

Never used a specific program just for screen shots. If you are a windows user you have MS paint and there are many free graphic programs you can use such as Irfanview etc. Depending on what I want the screen shot for I use Irfanview, PSP or PS.

I am using XP Media Center edition and MS Outlook 2003

Gadwin printscreen is one of 2 that I use. (each is set up with different options). Not available at MG downloads.

You have to set it up differently if you want to print the full screen, or a part of the screen. Not that difficult. Bazza
