Battery "Desktop mode" won't allow charge past 50%

Question: Battery "Desktop mode" won't allow charge past 50%

Hello Sevenforums!

I have used the search function but haven't been able to find a useful answer to my problem, so i'm taking my chances;

The problem is occurring on my Lenovo G580 Laptop - originally with Windows 7 preinstalled and Lenovo Solutions center, which had a setting to increase the battery lungevity by only charging it to 50% and then running directly off the power cord from there.

The problem however, is that in the mean time i've installed a new HDD because the old one broke down, and am now stuck with this battery setting and no knowledge of how to disable it again. I have tried to reinstall the Lenovo Software on the Windows 10 installation, but have either found a bad installer or had problems running the program, since i am not able to use and/or access said battery management settings, depending on my method of installation.

Is there some BIOS/Windows setting or anything else i can use to reverse the battery saver mode?

Sincerely; Nicklas Tegewaldt

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Battery "Desktop mode" won't allow charge past 50%

It came with Win 7 and you installed win 10. Correct?
As the battery charger is controlled by a specific Lenovo driver, you must install the Lenovo program that control the battery charge. It may be that the Lenovo program only has the Win 7 driver and it don't work on Win 10.
You should ask for Lenovo help.

New member here. I hope you can help me with a problem I've been having for the past several months.

My home PC, built from an Asus P5K3 Deluxe motherboard and running Windows 10, has been sending me notifications and pop-ups recently asking me to "plug your PC in to charge the battery". It is, however, never unplugged nor even turned off except when I'm doing maintenance. I do periodically (once a week on average) reboot the PC to load software updates or run virus scans in which case I usually let my anti-virus program turn it off when it is done. I also use Sleep mode to keep online miscreants away while I'm out or not using it. This is a full-sized desktop computer so IT HAS NO BATTERY. Why the OS can't detect that fact is a complete mystery. It insists it is a laptop and there appears to be no way for me to force it to change its mind. The power icon in the System Tray never changes from saying "0% available (plugged in, not charging)." no matter what I do.

Recent changes that may or may not be related:

. I had an UPS attached several years ago but disconnected it because it became less reliable than my city power (I don't know why people use the things - they're just another point for failure and never work well for long). The S/W that came with the UPS was uninstalled as well.

. All OS Power & Sleep and screen-saver settings that I can find have been disabled or made "never", but I may not have gotten them al... Read more

I read all the responses to the exact question as mine as well as similar questions, none are applicable, as not even Safe Mode will load past black screen with "Safe Mode" in each corner, and at the top "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 7601:Service
Pack 1)". Thankfully, i had just recently backed up most of my files!  I want to get it working so I can wipe it clean and get rid of it. Please help, thanks!

I installed a "spare" battery that I picked up at local computer show. Initially it had a 2% charge. After I plugged in the power supply, it steadily built up [things went from orange to green].

However, when it reached 74% it stopped charging !! I pulled the plug and ran the battery down to 50%. But when it reached 74% it stopped again.

The little green battery symbol [on the hinge] has stopped "blinking" ??

How can I get a 100% charge into the battery ??

NOTE: I posted this on Thinkpad forum and got "zero response".

Answer:T21 Thinkpad - "Partial" Battery Charge

Chances are it is suffereing from the "memory effect" as they do after a while. Batteries do not have an infinite life and this is one of the first indications that it is getting tired. You should discharge it down to nearly zero and recharge it a few times to see if it recovers (unlikely)

Monday morning- Screen pops up saying my laptop wasn't shut down right. That it had to run a test to shut it down normal- Test took about 3hrs to complete.
After test I could get on like normal then once I shut it it shut down and didn't get back on till later that night only to find I CAN"T get past the  Black screen of death- the black screen with the "_" in top left corner. I've restarted it a lot to see if it would just turn on like normal with no luck. I CAN"T press F8 without having it beep at me I can only get into F2 and F12 and that is it. I know my battery is crap has been because it won't charge. I also Sunday night uploaded from malware bites web page a free download refreash virus protection again. Because somehow it went missing a few weeks before I did find that night I had to big viruses that I did get taken care of which were both trojans. I did get onto google.com a few times that night with having problems when trying to open the new window in a new tab- Fire Fox.- My mother also said her down stairs computer desk top was doing the same with google the day. So I'm wondering what is going on with everything. I've tried to get a email for tech support but no luck because they say that they don't do anything with my model number- which is only 2-3 yrs old. I've got a lot saved on the computer but can't get inside at all.

Hi Emilie2011,
Welcome to the Community, it could be an issue with the harddrive. I suggest you can start by running the Hardware diagnostics.
To run diagnostics press and hold down the "Fn" key (on the lower left hand bottom of the keyboard)  and turn on the system,it should ideally bring up screen showing Pre-Boot System Assessment.
Another way to run the diagnostics go to F12 screen, scroll down using the "up" and "down" arrow key, choose diagnostics  and press Enter.
If the diagnostics shows any error code/message please post it back.
Since your system is getting stuck on black screen with blinking cursor, you can also try to release flea power.
To release flea power disconnect the charger and remove the battery, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect the battery and charger.Turn on the system and see if it boots to Windows.
Hope this helps,
Thank You
Roshan.

Hello,

Whenever I run my computer plugged into power, it runs perfectly as expected. But as soon as I unplug the computer, its performance dramatically decreases. This is extremely noticeable in games.

I have ensured it is on the "High Performance" mode, and have checked the advanced settings for this mode to ensure that it is the same for both battery and plugged-in.

My graphics card provides no options for its operation in battery mode, so I am now stumped.

I don't have anything running either, my anti-virus is disabled and I am running only system critical processes (apart from the application/game that is running ever so laggy).

My graphics driver is the latest MobileForce driver (since nVidia hasn't released one for my card in Vista...). It works excellently when plugged in.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Earlier this year I bought a Chromebook 11 3120 and I have been greatly disappointed with its battery life as even when shutdown it drains the battery!
Is this normal behavior for a Chromebook?
I don't think so...
Even though it takes >10 hours to drain the battery from full charge it is rather annoying having to plug the thing in each day when with the little use it gets it should last a week or more without needing a recharge.

Also, if I enable developer mode, the thing emits a random "beep! beep!" when supposedly shutdown/switched off, which leads me to believe it is faulty and not actually powering down and staying down.  The beeps are the same as when booted in developer mode and left 30 seconds as it is the warning that OS verification is disabled.
When the normal ChromeOS is restored (by either doing a full recovery or simply pressing the space bar at the warning screen when booting), the beeping does not occur, but the battery still drains when the thing has been shutdown.
Does anyone else with a Dell Chromebook experience similar issues?

Hi all,

First off, thank you for reading. Please help if you do know a fix, and if not, thank you for looking!

I am posting here to see if I simply need to set a setting differently.

A desktop computer I built for a friend, who also had me build one for his friend, is having issues with one to two random reboots a day. I had him take a photo of the error message that he was getting. Here it is.

Here is the link if the photo doesn't work for you:

http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o230/sparsons6183/DSCF9426.jpg

This computer shows a battery icon, that is full, in the tray in the lower right. That seems weird since it is plugged in, however I read somewhere that if a comp. has a UPS plugged in that Vista shows the battery level on the computer. It did it's reboot thing when I was there once, and the UPS beeps twice and the light turns orange. Funny thing is though, with this recovery thing running it just brings windows back up, just like a temporary blip in service. It def. powers down though.

So my initial thought is, well, it's gotta be the backup power supply. So I had him plug into a surge protector that was connected to the wall for a day to see if he got reboots, and he did. So that tested to see if it gives a battery error even if the computer is plugged into the wall, and it does. This shouldn't be a CMOS battery problem, because it happens everyday, and works fine in the inbetween...but am I wrong? The real kicker with all of this is that... Read more

Answer:Solved: A desktop, plugged in, gives "critical level" battery error?

Update! It rebooted when plugged into a power bar, AND when the USB cable was still attached to it. He is testing without the USB connected.

So without the power connected to UPS, but with the data connected, it still messed up.

Does this help?

Hello everyone,   This is a rather interesting problem that just started occurring. Not sure if this is a Windows Error as it seems to be confused as to if it is a Desktop or a Laptop, but occasionally I will get the error message of-----------------------------------------------------------------------Critical Battery[!] You should change your battery or switch to outlet power immediately to keep from losing your work.-----------------------------------------------------------------------This computer is a ( Desktop/Tower) Pentium 4 HT 3.0 Ghz with 2GB PC3200 DDR Ram, running Windows XP Pro SP2. This problem has been happening now for last few weeks where I will go to logon to my work computer and got these messages sometimes stacked 2 or 3 deep of repeated alerts. The power options power scheme for this system is set up as a Home/Office Desk and not set up as Portable/Laptop... SO I believe that maybe Windows is confused some how...This system is powered through a 750VA APC UPS, but I dont have the UPS management cable attached to report back any issues with parachute software, so I know it is not that!!!Anyone seen this before?   I'm Stumped  Dave

Hi,

I've seen that message on desktops before too.
It's just a generic message that does not in anyway affect a desktop though. I'd say, just ignore it.

TL/DR: This happens during boot when connected to a UPS, I'd like to stop it. =\

---
Recently decided to connect a UPS (CP1500PFCLCD) to my PC that way it can auto hibernate if there is a power loss. I ran into a annoying bug though.

Whenever I restart Windows takes 5-10 seconds to read the battery level (initially reporting 0%). And during this time it pops-up a fullscreen message and a broken explorer window that can only be closed by Alt+Tabing and clicking the X (see attached).

Additionally also drops my PC into battery settings during the last phase of startup making every boot take about 10 seconds longer (it will stay on the battery powercfg settings until it is able to read the battery level).

Steps tried: Googled the *insert expletive here* out of it. Disabled all notifications, Disabled Action Center and Un-hid all powercfg settings looking for a way to disable the Critical Battery Notification (the only one that exists is the Low Battery notification).
---

P.S. I really don't care about ever seeing the critical battery notification, either I'll be at the PC during power loss and will shut down immediately or I won't and it will auto-hibernate. - As for switching to battery settings during boot, I guess I can change those to match the AC settings.

Are you using the Cyberpower PowerPanel application for the UPS or the built in Windows app? I have a Cyberpower and use the PowerPanel application and no problems. I have had two Cyberpower UPS over the years and never had an issue with low battery alert unless there was an actual problem.

Hi, I am having a problem with my newer computer, I just got this rig a few months ago and never had a problem until last Thursday. It Blue Screened on me while I was installing ARC GIS 10.1. From then on it randomly crashes. (I have previously installed ARC GIS 10 and never had a problem.)

I keep things updated (windows and drivers) and I do think windows forced through an update earlier that day. I un installed ARC GIS 10.1 and the windows update, didn't make any difference. I have also ran the Windows Mem test and Auslogic BoostSpeed/ Registry repair. I keep getting "Bad Pool Header" and "Page In Nonpage Area" and I can't seem to find something that triggers it. So far it hasn't crashed in Safe Mode without network access. I tried it once with access and it crashed. Currently have windows checking the drives for errors ( I have 4).

I think I attached the proper dump files. This is my work computer so this is kind of causing a big problem. Thanks in advanced for the help!!

When my laptop is plugged in (Satellite C580-1KN) it says "fully charged 100%" but when unpluged it says "low battery 4%".

Does anyone know what the problem is?
Thanks!

Answer:Satellite C580 - plugged in says"Fully charged", unplugged it says "low battery 4%"

How old is your battery?

It could be possible that the battery does not work properly anymore…
You should know that sooner or later any battery will lose their efficiency.

So even if the battery charging notification says the battery is fully charged, the charging level could be very low…
In such case only the battery replacement could help you.

Hi and THANKS for being there! This is primarily a term definition question. I don't find any clear answer in my user's guide.

I've got this terrific TV card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich.

I've got this terrific add-on AGP card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich. But I'm thinking that's beside the point. (It's a nVidia Geforce FX 5200)

This TV Tuner/Capture card dates back a ways; bought it for my old Windows Millennium machine and I remember that it worked just GREAT. It has the brand name "Brooktree" but that might just be the chipset or something. Anyway, I abandoned the TV add-on when I upgraded to a newer Windows XP machine in early 2007. I couldn't find the right driver though it worked pretty fairly with the old driver for most TV stations, it didn't work perfectly. I ditched it at the time.

I recently visited driverguide.com and searched diligently and finally did find a perfect driver for that TV card for XP. I am sure it is the latest and best driver available, so that is not even an issue.

Since I no longer subscribe to cable, I can use this old card to watch only channel 3, as output by my VCR. (The card also has FM radio, which works great!)

Here's the thing. A very itty-bitty teensy slight snag. When I initiate the TV Tuner, it always starts up in what they call "Preview mode". There is sound but no picture! No problem, I just tell it to go into the alternate mode, "... Read more

Yesterday my PC crashed and now I can only use it in Safe Mode. I have been through the Windows self repair program which has done nothing. The first time it happened, it allowed me to start from a system restore point, but then it crashed again and now doing a system restore doesn't even let me start up windows normally.

I looked in the "device manager" driver section and it has an exclamation mark next to the "Consumer IR Devices" in the "System Devices" section and It says: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"
Further details:
"Driver Provider: Microsoft"
"Driver Version: 6.0.6001.18000"

I click on "check for solutions" it doesn't do anything, and I have tried uninstalling and restarting the computer, and also the "update driver" option but it says windows has determined it is up to date.

Does anyone have any solutions for this? I have been googling for a solution for hours and haven't came across any solutions, apart from that it could potentially be to do with video card/drivers or RAM.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

Joe.

Ok where do I begin?! I have been dealing with viruses, spyware/malware for the past week. It all started with Norton advising me that I had been infected with Trojan. Vundo and Trojan.Zonebac. After that I started receiving many different pop ups warning me about critical system alerts. I also had an annoying yellow triangle at the bottom of my screen warning me about different trojans and worms. More evil friends included 2 new icons that had made their home on my desktop one named "Live Safety Center" and the other "Online Security Guide", also installed was a new toolbar named "Security Toolbar 7.1". I have scanned my computer with many different programs and have somehow finally managed to get rid of the pop ups and toolbar, although I know I'm probably still infected somewhere. I'm sorry this is so long but, I wanted to explain EVERYTHING! I'm running Windows XP SP2, and have followed all steps to post. I downloaded DSS, but after many attempts to run, it just wouldn't let me. I do have a fresh hijackthis log and my Panda report, I hope this is good enough.
Many thanks in advance to whomever helps me, I am desperate!

Hi all

Ill cut to the chase.

What I am asking is someway of turning the Entire Windows Desktop/Screen "Black and White" not simply High Contrast.

I am one of those unfortunate ones, like many, that suffer from quite severe migraines from time to time. Couple this with frequent headaches, sometimes daily. This obviously isnt helped by the fact that my hobby and career are both in IT. I have tried every possible solution to alleviate the headaches. Lay off certain foods, make sure to have a balanced diet. Turn off any strong lighting around my computer screen, remove any strong colours from the desktop etc......

Windows XP / Vista have tried to address this issue with the accessibility wizard, where you can select the High Contrast Options to take any strong colours off the screen. Unfortunately this still doesnt get rid of everything.

When you make any major changes or "logoff" in XP/Vista, the screen fades to "black and white" for a short period. If you know what I am on about, thats the effect I am after.

More than likely a black and white layer is laid over the desktop to create this effect, unfortunately you would not be able to access anything underneath.

I need a fully functional XP machine in complete black and white.

On old CRT monitors you were able to remove the colour, making the screen B&W, but with alot of LCD screens this function is not available.

If anyone has any ideas, you would be helping so many people.

Good day all.

I recently restarted my computer only to be met with an empty desktop.

Also, My Start Menu is empty. I can't locate any of programs or documents.a Right clicking and going to windows explorer, I could only view : "My Computer", "Windows (C); and when I click on them, they contain few irrelevant files.

In other words I can't find my personal saved documents, "my document" folder , recycle bin and all other programs.

My wifi still works so the only thing I can do on my system is browse on the internet.

However, I can open a microsoft office file, PDF files, if I download it directly from my email or from an external drive.

I can save files on my new blank desktop.

I presume this is a virus attack.

Can anyone be kind enough to advise me on what to do?

AFTER FOLLOWING SOME ADVICE I AM BEGINNING TO GET SOME OF MY FILES BACK BUT MY START PROGRAM FOLDERS ARE ALL EMPTY. For example; when i click the microsoft office folder, it is empty.

HOW CAN I GET RID OF THIS VIRUS PLEASE?

I have been plagued for years by this bug (see attached Mad_Explorer_col.JPG screen dump), and this morning after visiting Tech Support Guy > Windows XP then searching for "Windows Explorer", on page 2 in "Solved: Explorer tree display curiosity, AKA Odd Windows Explorer Bug", page 2, I found the cause and solution brought by Mosaic1 Wed 07 Mar 2007 05:48 GMT:
Do you have the desktop toolbar on the taskbar?and mrwes Tue 07 Aug 2007 18:34 GMT:
You can get around this by making the toolbar point to the Desktop but using c:\Documents and Settings > (Profile name) > Desktop. You don't see the My Computer and IE icons in the list, but everything else shows up...Thanks a lot to Mosaic1 and mrwes!

Thanking you in advance.

Answer:NO DESKTOP after booting up … & SYSTEM RESTORE "Incomplete" … & "Strange" Temp Files

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

Answer:Desktop erased. Can't Locate "My Documents" folder and "Start Menu" folders

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

Hey guys,

after hours of figuring out how to successfully activate an ad-hoc network connection that uses my VPN to connect to my university-network, I succeeded in turning my computer into a router.

Everything functions as I like, but now there's two issues I'd like to get sorted:

1) How do I secure my network, other than using a password? There's about 200 people living in my dorm building and I don't want others using the WiFi. Not because I'm egoistic, but simply for safety concerns. Gross misbehaviour can cost me my network account and I've grown accustomed to 20 Megabyte/s download speeds.

2) Is there anything I can do to effectively shut down my computer, with only the necessary programs running to maintain the connection?

My computer is my normal work and leisure machine, it's a big ass desktop running Windows 7. In lack of a wireless router, I created an ad-hoc* connection to have WiFi.
Now I want to be able to turn off the computer, like in some power-saving mode, but keep the necessary parts "awake" to keep up the wireless connection.

Cheers guys!

I think I am infected with Malware, Spyware, or some type of virus. This is a resurection of an old unresolved Vista Post, and it also happens in Windows 7.
====================================
Original subject - Start Menu - program search issue
I use Windows Mail for my daily email tasks, and would like to be able to
open the program by using the vista search bar built into the start menu. The
problem is, when i search for "mai" it brings up Windows Mail, and I can hit
enter and load the program. However, when I search for "mail", it returns:
"No items match your search." I have it set to index both the start menu and
my programs directory, and have even tried to rebuild the index.

It seems kind of strange that Vista would recognize that when I type "mai" I
want my mail programs, but when I actually type "mail", it gets confused...
and this in turn has -me- confused.

Oh thank goodness, I've finally found someone else with the same problem.
The word I have issues with is "photo" ("phot" works great, but no results
for "photo"). Not a show-stopper, but WHY!?

I've noticed the same thing with Windows Desktop Search in Windows 7. After some experimenting I think I have the reason why, but not a fix.

It seems to em that mail and photo are probably used as "kind =" prefixes in Windows search, and even if you enter photo with out ... Read more

I right clicked on the Taskbar and checked Quick Launch and hit the Apply button. This put the Quick Launch toolbar on the Taskbar with the Show Desktop and Internet Explorer icons. I deleted them and now I can't duplicate this action. I can get the Internet Explorer icon back. But I can't get the Show Desktop icon back.

Does anyone know how to get the Show Desktop icon back on the Quick Launch toolbar.

Thanks,

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

My ISP (Charter Pipeline) offers only "dynamic" broadband cable service. I've found that when using my D-Link router in dynamic mode (default setup) I often have problems with false "404" DNS errors (i.e.; "this page cannot be displayed") and/or web pages that download with (red x) place markers where small graphic images should be. Updating my router's firmware to the latest stable version improved it's performance however the errors still occur albeit less often.

On the other hand, if I switch the router to "static" mode and manually enter the necessary settings, everything works great. Since I seem to be unable to fully resolve the problems in dynamic mode I'm wondering what sort of future issues I'm likely to encounter if I go with static mode on a full-time basis. To be more specific, my understanding is that the ISP will change certain settings from time to time since this is the nature of a dynamic broadband connection.

With that in mind, my questions are:

1) What settings will most likely be changed by the ISP?
2) How often might the changes occur?
3) Are there any workarounds to minimize the inconvenience?

My router is a D-Link "DI-624" (Version "C", firmware version 2.42). If it makes any difference, the router has an option to set a "Static DHCP"

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom ;-)

Hi Everyone,

Here I am going to descibe how to change Windows XP from using "IDE" to "AHCI" mode post OS installation.

If your looking to install an SSD into a Windows XP computer you will likely find these instructions invaluable. Most XP computers (due to their vintage) are running in "IDE" mode,
and it turns out that SSDs perform best when running in "AHCI" mode!

The root of what follows comes from these instructions (so credit to those who deserve it!).

Also thanks go out to Alexoiu who pointed me in the right direction here...

INSTRUCTIONS

1). Download the appropriate SATA driver from your motherboard manufacturers site (the file is typically quite small, mine was under 2Mb)
2). Extract the file to your hard drive
3). Locate the ahcix86.sys file (you may need to uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" in order to see the correct file)
4). Copy ahcix86.sys
5). Paste ahcix86.sys into ..\System32\Drivers (typcially C:\Windows\System32\Drivers)

7). Double click on the Registry file to install it

HI, first of all, I found out that my home computer was infected by the lovelorn worm. Plan to clean that tonight.

Secondly, I found copies of 2 files named "folder" and "desktop" in almost all folders. The files where identical so I suspect that there is a virus that's propagating this. Is my hunch correct? Is this related to the lovelorn virus or is it another kind? What should I do?

Thanks!!!

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hello, nice peoples that provide so many fixes to make Windows suck less.

I've been looking for hours, but the terms are so general I can't find anything. When I open up Windows Explorer, the "Computer", my profile folder, and the Recycle Bin all appear under "Desktop". Which makes finding things a pain in the butt.

Is there any way to set those items as their own icons, outside of Desktop, and remove them from under Desktop? Basically, I want to see this:

-Computer
└C:\
└Folder
└Folder
└...
└D:\

-Desktop
└Folder
└...

-senselocke
└Downloads
└Favorites
└...

-Recycle Bin

I know you guys have found a ton of tweaks for Windows 7, but this one has bugged me for a while now. Has anyone found a way to get something sort of like that?

Answer:Move "Computer" and "[username]" out from under Desktop in Explorer?

Hello Senselocke,

You could use the tutorial below to add the User Folder (ex: senselocke) as a separate group in the navigation pane.User Folder - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
You could use the tutorial below to add the Recycle Bin as a separate group in the navigation pane.Recycle Bin - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
You might also see if unchecking the Show all folders option in the navigation pane may help get you closer.

Hope this helps some,

I recently noticed that I no longer have a "My Computer" icon or a "My Documents" icon on my desktop. I tried to restore by right clicking on desktop, clicking Properties, clicking Desktop tab, and clicking Customize desktop. The problem is once there, both the my computer and my documents are greyed and can't be selected. I'm clueless as to how they disappeared although I was also missing the calculator and the recycle bin. Fortunately, I've found a way to get those back but I'm at a loss as to resolving the missing my computer and my documents icons.

All help will be most gratefully appreciated.

Hello,

Well this one is interesting - there are two main syptoms I noticed which made me think I have a problem. Ironically, I hadn't used the computer in about 2 weeks, and noticed these issues immediately.

1) Vipre identified a "Desktop.ini" Trojan, and asked me to reboot. Yet when i reboot, the problem was not fixed - instead, the message just keeps poping back up.

2) I figured i'd try to update Windows, yet the update functionality is not working - it asks me to reboot, yet rebooting does not allow me to update windows.

3) I use "Postgres" Database for one games i play online (online poker). Yet, this service will not run.

Other than the 3 symptoms above, there is nothing else (i.e// browser redirects) which are affecting my computer.

I'm posting the required documents below, and appreciate all the help. Thanks so much.

I also, as stated in the guide, do not believe i have access to my old boot/windows CD (really don't know where these are - but could potentially dig up if required). I am on a dell computer.

Also when running GMER - i kept getting problems regarding "not found hard disks/drives" - so i ran simply with "Sections and C:\" selected as per guide.

My battery says "1% plugged in, not charging". I ordered a new battery, installed today got msg saying "battery not detected", i shut it down, took battery out, replaced, restarted (several time), same msg. I visited many forums and read many threads on both of these issues. Apparently both of these issues are common with Dell, but the general consensus of the community is that i need to do a Bios update..So i downloaded the driver for the Bios update and attempted to install is, but got a massage that the adapter AND the battery must both be plugged in, in order to do the update..well..how can i "plug the battery in" when my pc is unable to detect the battery??!!!So i shut it down for like the 10th time this evening..took battery out and replaced it with the old battery..the one with 1% charge, but at least my pc is able to detect this one. I go back to the Bios update download, attempt to run it and get a msg saying battery must be 10% or higher to run the update **sigh** really frustrated now. I have seen people say its a loose connection and i should tap it near the motherboard...this did nothing. I jiggled adapter cord, nothing, i cleaned the connectors on the both batteries, nothing. I ran a diagnostic test thru dell.com on the battery and it came up as PASSED...lol..seriously?? I ran troubleshooting..nothing found.. I am at my wits end...help???

Hi, recently I noticed that when clicking on the notifications icon bottom right of the screen, getting the quick settings for Airplane mode, wifi and so on, the "Airplane mode" tile and the "Bluetooth" one are always toggled from the very startup. YET the mode is not actually enabled since I can surf the internet no problem. I wouldn't know about the bluetooth since I never checked. Hi All,

My W8.1 laptop has recently started going to "Locking" mode when I press the power button (on the machine) and/or select "Shutdown" from the start menu. I've checked the power settings and the PC is definitely set for shutdown as opposed to some other function such as sleep, hibernate, etc.

So basically after I click or press the power button, the screen schows "Shutting Down" (as would be expected) but after a few seconds changes to "Locking". Once the operation is complete I'll need to tap any key (to wake it up) and then click shutdown from there. Only then will the machine fully shutdown.

I'm not sure how this behavior began but I haven't been able to trace it back to 3rd party software. ANy thoughts or solutions appreciated! Thanks.

Hi guys,

as most of you will be aware with the show desktop feature in the windows, which in the system tray on bottom right of your screen.

I need a tweak or registry edit to make it do "Win + M" Minimize all Windows, instead of "Win + D" show desktop.

Reason is it hides my gadgets and docks, while Win + M keep those on the desktop and just minimizes the windows.

any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks, and sorry mods if i posted my first post in the wrong section. please move it to right section.

I bought this Anker battery in early April to replace the ancient one that came with my laptop. It's been working fantastically until day before yesterday. For whatever reason, it got to about 67%, and stopped charging. I've restarted my computer, pulled the battery out to see if it was a charger issue (my charger cord had some exposed wires from getting caught in the recliner, but I covered them with electrical tape), and ran a battery report. Everything seems fine, except that my battery only charges a little over halfway. I even ran it on battery, and it ran normally, and when I plugged it back in, it charged until it hit the 67% mark, and then it says "plugged in, not charging".

What do I need to do to make it work properly again? Because I can't believe that it's dead or malfunctioning after such a short period of time.

X1 Carbon, gen 1.Windows 7 and Debian.Battery won't change past 60%. In windows, it shows the battery as 100%. The Battery Manager software says that the battery is in poor condition, and can only store 60% of its original full charge capacity. If I charge it to 100% in windows, and boot Linux, it shows that the battery is actually charged to 60%. It charges up to 60.15%, then discharges to 60%. acpi -i shows that the battery is only being charged to 60% of its full capacity, as well. However, it Windows, shows this charge as 100%. It only runs for about 2 hours (being 1.5 months old). In the beginning, it could run for 4-5 hours. I suspect that a software/firmware update has put a limit on the battery charge level. Is there anything I can do to get the battery back at full capacity? 2 hours simply isn't enough for an ultrabook...Martin

Let me explain that title... I am looking in the desktop directory which I accessed from "My Computer" (actually on WinVista it's called just "Computer" but you know what I mean). From looking in the desktop directory, I see some files there which I do not see on the actual desktop! There are two such files. When I minimize all windows and look at my desktop in its entirety, those two extra files are nowhere to be seen. Yet Win still thinks they're there somehow. If I try to paste the same file to the desktop, it asks me if I want to replace the one already there.

Wtf?

Answer:Win Vista: how can 2 items on desktop be "missing" when they are actually "there"??!

The Icons may have been moved off the screen, I've had that happen before, annoying but pretty minor bug, since they came/come back later. Or you can select "auto arrange" which should fix it, then you can switch back to whatever view you prefer. (if it happens again or to anyone else reading this thread.)

Apologize in advance for what surely has been asked and answered before, but a quick search of this forum did not give me what I am looking for.

On my desktop are two folders, labeled images and styles, that I do not need to see. What setting must I change to make them disappear from the desktop (without impacting the functioning and appearance of my Windows installation?)

The content of styles is a file named lame.css and a sub-folder CVS with 7 files in it; the content of images is one .gif and two .png files and a sub-folder CVS with 7 files in it.

Answer:Get rid of "images", "styles" folders on desktop

Right click on them and check Hide.

Hello, I recently had to move a couple XP Pro computers around and change their workgroup / workstation "Computer name". And also had to change my personal admin user account name on each computer to match the new computer workstation name.. But now my "Run as" feature and remote desktop feature don’t work properly...don’t understand...read ahead...

OK, so lets say when I originally set up this one dell computer right out of the box, I set it up with the workgroup name being WS999 and my personal admin user account name was 999 on that computer. Then I moved that computer and changed its workgroup computer name to WS700, and then renamed my personal admin user account to 700 to match…for my own personal preference.

But now when I go to use the "Run as" feature (desktop icon, shift + right click, “Run as...”) in order to run a program with admin privileges through my admin account while logged on in a limited user account, it wants the original admin user name of 999 and not my NEW personal admin user account 700. For me to run the program as an admin, I have to put in the original admin user account name of 999 as the user for it to work. The same thing happens when I try to use remote desktop on the XP computers I have changed the workstation ID and admin user account name on.

I know I could use the built in MASTER admin account, but I don’t like too from previous problems and a super long PW All I did was go to “my computer” proper... Read more

I need to get a GbE NIC for an older computer that will run as a server (OS undecided). In my shopping, I find that some cards are labeled as "server" cards and some "desktop" cards; there appear to be two versions of some cards.

What's the difference? Reliability, driver support, performance, features...?

Example:

Honestly? Stick with one made by Intel. Best drivers, best performance. The "direct from asia" ones are on my shit list as of late.

Hello, I'm interested in the following:

Connecting "Desktop" to other partition than Windows "C:", so if I drop files on DSKT for easy reuse and availability, they copy on, f.e., "D:" or other partition.

Any way to achieve this?

Thank you.

Answer:Connect "Desktop" to other partition than Windows "C:"?

I just go to the other partition or HDD, right-click the drive letter/icon and drag to the desktop choosing Create shortcut here. That works but it probably would be better to do the same with a Folder on the other drive. Dropping a file on the icon should copy or save it there.

I have tried this battery, but with another charger. It would persist to not charge past 30%. I tried with a different battery, with my charger, and it would work properly. I am wondering as to wether or not I can fix the battery, or if there is some sort of bug in the system. If not, I'll get a new laptop battery. The model is an Acer Aspire 5551-A.
Thanks.

Normally I run my G770 laptop plugged in without a battery in, to help preserve its lifespan. In preparing to take it somewhere, I put the battery back in to charge it to full. However, I noticed that the battery appears to be discharging even though my laptop is plugged in. It still works fine with the battery out and plugged in; it is able to draw power from the AC adapter, but when I put the battery in it appears to stop and discharge the battery rather than charge it. I have tried this while booting both Windows 7 and Linux Mint with the same result; Windows 7 explicitly says on the system tray battery icon that is is "Connected, not charging". If I plug it in with the battery connected and the computer turned off, the battery light on the front turns on which I assume means it is charging. (But then, this light is also turned on when the computer is running) Once the battery charge reached 50%, the icon did change to indicate charging, but it won't charge past 50% or discharge under it. How can this be happening and what do I have to change to allow it to charge the battery while running again?

Answer:Laptop battery cannot charge past 50%

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

I have an Alienware 14, and recently it refuses to charge past 45%. I'm aware it may be an issue with the battery, but the thing is that it used to do this a while back, with 53%. and then one day, it just fixed itself and i've been fine at 100% for months, until yesterday when it just went down to 45% (as i';m looking at it now, it says "46% available (plugged in, not charging) does anyone know what might be the reason? Hi JOVVVVV,
Are you using the original Dell OEM adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.

Hello,

This is a Satellite M45-S165 running Windows XP SP2.

I just put in a new battery from Technuity sold at Circuit City. Followed the instructions and let it charge for 10 hours before using it. The laptop was turned off while charging.

Turned on the laptop and Toshiba Power Saver said that the battery was only charged to 25%. It just won't let it charge any more than that.

I shut down TPS from the task manager and opened the Windows power meter on the control panel. After running on just the battery for a while I tried to recharge it. But the windows power meter is showing that the battery is charging, but that is stuck at 3%.

The battery is new, so any idea about what is keeping it from charging completely?

Thanks.

Answer:Satellite M45-S165 New Battery won't charge past 25%

Hello

At first I must say that you have done everything correctly and this issue is probably not because of the battery (I hope you bought the right one). The question is ? is there some problem with power supply electronic.

You must understand that it is not easy to offer simply explanation to such issues and to find out what is wrong there it is necessary to run diagnostics program and check power supply electronic functionality.

This can be done by authorized service provider only. So you must make decision what to do. Make a call and ask them what can be the reason for this. Inform you what can be done with it. What else you can do?

I've spent lots of time searching and troubleshooting this issus, but haven't found anything that works yet and am really hoping not to have to send me computer in for repairs since I use it for working from home this month.  I have seen same issue most frequently raised with the Lenovo Yoga-but haven't seen a solution. Issue:  The battery stops charging at 90%.  If I unplug and drain the battery, it will charge back up with the adapter, but only to 90%.  It then reports, 90% plugged in, not charging.  Occassionally when I restart the computer it will say "90% and charging" and the icon will look like its charging, but after about 5 seconds that stops.  This problem started 2 weeks ago.  The energy management is set to maximize (not optimize) battery life. Computer age:  I purchased this computer from Lenovo less than 6 months ago.   List of troubleshooting attempts so far:  1) Turning off computer, detaching power supply, and holding down power button for 30sec before starting,  2) Battery guage reset, 3) changing from maximize to optimize and back to maximize power, 4) downloading latest Power Management Drive from Lenovo 5) using a different power adapter.  Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Hi guys!

So i tried installing windows 7 Home Premium using an empty HDD. The old OS was Vista, and it was located in the same HDD. I managed to install Windows 7 successfully, but when booting after the install it crashed right after the "starting windows" screen. It then gives me the choise between starting the startup repair tool, or to start windows normally. When i run the startup repair tool it can not fix the problem. I've tried different HDD but the problem still persists. The fact that I haven't got a clue what to do really annoys me. In addition it isn't even my own pc. My dad's vista started failing on him. My machine was working fine. I had been on it for a couple hours just doing regular internet browsing. I tried to open a program (EverQuest 2) and it would open then immediately crash "EverQuest 2 has encountered an error". So I figured, reboot the machine. After the POST, it tells me to either launch start up repair or start normally. I chose start normally. It would go to the "starting windows" screen and the logo will not show up. it just stays there.

Powered down, and after the POST got the same options again. I picked start up repair this time. It would load the bar and show "loading windows files" or whatnot and when the bar would get completely full, it would freeze there.

My computer doesnt have a CD/DVD drive, I installed Windows 7 from USB. So I plugged the USB drive back into the computer and tried booting from that. It would go thru the "loading windows files" just fine, I can see the drive flashing as its being accessed. When the bar filled up, it would progress to "Starting Windows" screen, and stop blinking and just sit there... doing nothing. Tried using Safe Mode. Wouldn't load either.

I have not a clue what I should be looking for to even start getting it working again. The only physical change I've made to the system was plugging in another monitor to my graphic card. And even then, I've shut down and rebooted and it's been just fine.

After that, whenever I open the program from the desktop icon, the "Loading" screen appears but nothing happens after that. Also, I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to end the program. I have downloaded and used the DNS 12 uninstall "tool" several times and re-downloaded and installed the program, but the same thing happens, the program's "Loading" box appears but gets "stuck" there. Last night, I attempted to install a linux distro alongside 7, the installation failed, so I gave up and just rebooted to 7.

It got stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen, so I preformed hard shutdown and when to the "Startup Repair" utility and it attempted repairs, it then said that the repairs were unsuccessful, so I restarted and windows loaded to the desktop. Success! or so I thought...

After a while, I shut my laptop down and went to bed (as you do). When I needed to use it this morning, it wouldn't load past the "Starting Windows" screen again, so I shut it down and restarted and it went the desktop.

Answer:Occasionally wont load past "Starting Windows" screen

Hi,

Can you access the Advanced boot options?

Advanced Boot Options
Choose Last known Good Configuration

   Tip
Use the up-arrow and down-arrow keys to move the menu’s highlight to Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced), and then press Enter as the mouse won’t work at this screen.

Your computer should load successfully, and Windows 7 will discard the bad configuration and return permanently to the last known good configuration.

Hello all,

I have a Compac desktop, it's relatively new as far as use. Recently, it's not been used because of a startup issue. It will load the first screen (The compac screen and act like it's it going to load up) but then loops back to the first screen and continue to do this over and over. My mother told me that the computer had fallen off of out computer hutch (About 2 inches off the ground) and heard an interesting noise inside. She described the sound like a CD hitting the floor, but I looked inside the desktop, and nothing seemed to be out of place.
I want to get the data files and documents, but as stated above, I cannot use the computer.
I have a Ubuntu CD already made, and have used it before.. Unfortunately, the CD drive doesn't seem to be recognizing the disc. I can see the little white blinking "-", but that is all I can get to come up before the screen goes into another loop; and the previous process.
I was hoping some one could possibly help me out in getting the computer to the point to save the data? I have the option to reformat the whole computer, but I'd rather save that for last measures if the data cannot be recovered.
Again, the computer is a compac, Windows XP OS, desktop - only about 3 years old.

Answer:Computer will not boot past the "Compac" startup screen.

Hello. Hope everybody is doing fine.
So, after installing another 4GB stick of RAM and my trusted SSD, it was time for a refresh on the WEI. But before I get to that, let me take you back a few days ago, when I got myself a new laptop (), a Lenovo Z710 (i3-4000M, GT 745M, 4GB DDR3L [email protected] mHZ, 1TB Seagate SSHD with a 8GB SSD for caching) and since I couldn't accept its performance, I got down to business (note to self: MUST also update my system specs ).
Step 1: I installed another 4GB of RAM DDR3 from my previous laptop (you can get it on my system specs as they are now) running at 1.5v, with no problems whatsoever. Before doing this, I had checked via the trusted HWiNFO64 that the pre-installed stick was a module of dual nominal voltage so I wouldn't fry the poor DDR3L. Ran WEI, got a 7,4 score on memory (in fact I was kinda disappointed but anyways), had no BSODs, no freezes, no nothing. But the SSHD was just low (the 8 GB of caching were literally nowhere) and that was the time I decided to go to
Step 2: and get myself a new clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a Samsung 840 EVO SSD, with EVERYTHING in order (I had a few troubles finding the right driver for my wireless adapter though but I managed ) and decided to rerun the assessment.
To my great surprise, the test can't get past the "Direct3D 10 Batch Assessment", gets stuck there for about 5 minutes, maybe more and then I got the dialog box below. I am able to play MMO's and MMORPG games without any... Read more

Answer:WEI can't get past running test "Direct3D 10 Batch Assessment"

Update:
Problem solved! It seems that the culprit for the "hung" of the aforementioned assessment was the latest drivers for the Intel HD 4600 and specifically, the CMAA (Conservative Morphological Anti-Aliasing) setting under the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel, which was set to "Override Application Settings" option. I don't know if it would work with the latest drivers which include this setting because I installed the previous one, just to be safe.
For anyone out there facing the same problem but determined to have the latest drivers installed, I recommend picking the "Turn Off" or "Enhance Application Settings" option (whichever permits the Direct3d Batch Assessment to run) and re-rate his/her computer.
Hope that will help.

P.S.: I mark this thread as solved as for me it is. If anyone has any insight on this matter, please feel free to share. I would be glad to hear it.

Help - Please!!!  My Desktop decided to install the Windows 10 updates to my Windows 7 environment -- oh the joys!  Nothing but trouble ever since.  I uninstalled 10 to take me back to 7.
Upon reboot all was fine for a day.  Then, black screen with a cursor.  What the heck?  I checked all the things I was told to check, I ran all the diagnostics.  I uninstalled, reinstalled, did a system restore back to before the update.
After spending 3+ hours letting my system go thru the recommended ePSA Preboot System Assessment (All Tests Passed) - Today I have a system that I can't get to boot up because it says I have:
Status:  Oxc000000f
"The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."
I'm not a computer geek.  I can't get thru to anyone at Dell.  I've been trying to resolve this for 4 days now.
The only thing I can think that is happening is that the computer is trying to boot from an external hard drive that is in a "locked/password protected" mode on my system.  I have no idea how to bypass this.  I've tried unhooking the drive and rebooting and then it just goes back to black screen with a cursor.
Can anyone help me?  Please?

Answer:Can't Reboot Past External "Locked" Hard Drive

Hi DEAR64,
Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.
Please check if you can boot into safe mode <F8>.
Do you have the OEM Operating system DVD?
Please private message us the service tag of the system along with your email id (Note: please don't mention the service tag or email id on the public forum as it contains your personal information).

I sent an email to a few hundred people and for around 40 of them i got this "Warning: message could not send for the past 4 hours" email back. I understand that its not a Fail message and this this is one of those "there are no stupid questions" things but i would like to know:

What does this mean anyway?
Does the person receive my email if i do not get a Failure message after this?
Is there a way that i will not receive this message and only receive total failure messages?

I had the a few hundred other messages go through fine so i don't understand what causes this to happen to just a few dozen emails.

Thank you for being kind to Stupid Questions

Answer:Solved: What does "Warning: message could not send for the past 4 hours" mean anyway?

Let's say I work for a company whose email goes to abc.com; you send to me at [email protected] and get one of those messages back. The message means, in essence, that your mail got to abc.com, but some kind of problem with the system prevented the message from being sent to my actual mail server or computer. It's possible that the reason my be that I was fired and you will eventually get a "hard" failure message, but generally it means that abc will fix their system and the message will eventually get to me.

I'm sure there are some exceptions but, in general, I will get the message if you don't latter get a "hard" failure message.
