Preferred Solution: Windows Update Never Stops Looking for Updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey, everyone. About a week ago I did a factory restore on my computer to go back from Windows 10 to Windows 7. My computer came with Windows 7 x64. Here is the basic system information for my computer:

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.4
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 215 Processor, AMD64 Family 16 Model 6 Stepping 2
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 4863 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9100, 256 Mb
Hard Drives: C: 584 GB (544 GB Free); D: 10 GB (1 GB Free);
Motherboard: PEGATRON CORPORATION, VIOLET6
Antivirus: Avast Antivirus, Enabled and Updated

So anyway, I was able to download and install numerous Windows Updates but then it started doing this thing where it never stops checking for Windows Updates. In other words, it continues checking for Windows Update for hours upon hours and never finishes. I am not sure what to do to fix this. I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter from Microsoft and it found a couple of issues which it fixed but it was unable to fix one other issue. I can't recall what that issue was at the time but I am going to run it again here shortly to see if it will do the same thing again. I'll report back to you what it says it cannot fix if the error is reproduced.

Good morning Experts! Windows Update continually searches for updates and never stops. This began about a month ago.  It states that updates have never been checked for and never have been installed. Thank you!

Hi All,

I've been having a major problem with windows update for the last week or so, it's getting stuck "Checking for updates". Not only that, but I'm seeing this problem on 3 different installations with different underlying hardware. The 3 systems are:

1- VitrualBox (Linux Host) running Win7 Pro 32bit. This was last used July 2015 and was fully updated then.
2- Thinkpad X61 with SSD (which does NOT report 4k physical sectors/advanced format). Clean install this week of W7 Pro 64bit SP1 from official Microsoft retail disc, so no manufacturer extras.
3 - VirtualBox (Linux Host, different underlying hardware to install 1) running Win7 Pro 32 Bit, clean install this week. I did this one as an experiment after the other 2 failed to work.

All 3 systems exhibit the same problem when trying to update, the "Checking for updates" process never completes and after a period of activity, the svchost.exe process will sit at the top of the process display with unchanging memory usage and it will consume 100% of a single processor core, indicating to me that it is stuck in a single thread race condition. This continues to be the case even if I leave the computers for several hours.

I have used the automatic Windows "Fixit" for windows update on all systems, it did no good.

I have followed all of the instructions on this page:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/971058

to no avail.

I have used the SURT tool and run sfc /scannow. There are no error c... Read more

Patience :-)

Set the computer not to sleep.
Manually start the check for updates.
Leave the computer alone for at least 24 hours.

For some people, the check for updates ends after 20 minutes. For others, it takes many hours. Lots of speculation; but no hard facts as to why this is happening. Perhaps you are connecting to busy servers.

If you want, delete your experimental VM and create a fresh one. Before checking for updates, manually download/install the latest Windows Update client: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3083324 Then manually check for updates and leave it alone.

I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64-bit SP1. After activation, I tried running Windows Update, it doesn't stop searching. What can I do to fix this?

Answer:Windows Update never stops searching for updates

Follow these instructions exactly.
First, set Windows Updates to never check for Updates.
Next restart your computer, then install KB3020369, if not installed.
Then install KB3172605.

Windows updates should return to normal. You can then reset your updates to automatically check for updates if desired

I am trying to fully update my Vista Home Premium 32bit laptop fully prior to installing Windows 7 update. All goes well until the new update agent installed. My laptop would not download updates after that. The update agent downloaded and installed without
my instruction. I had purposely set the downloads to my choosing to download and install. This is the 3rd time I have reloaded windows to correct the corruption from the windows update agent so I am certain of the exact point updates stopped working. I have
a Toshiba laptop that is running fine. I want to know If there is any way to keep this Malware from loading again. I have been seeing that Windows 7 has been having the same trouble with this same Update Agent.  I have tried all the Microsoft Fixit and
readiness tools with no effect on the offending update agent and since we cannot uninstall this How am I going to update from this point? I don't trust that installing Windows 7 will do anything to solve the problem of the corruption from this update agent

I have a legal copy of XP which has been registered. There are 92 updates that will not install. I isolated KB892130 as the validation tool that will not validate with Microsoft before the other updates can be installed. I have turned off Avast (antivirus), but did not disable it. I have a laptop with Avast on it which has updated perfectly. I have forced validation from DOS but this still doesn't let the updates go ahead.
Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: XP update KB892130 will not validate and stops updates installing

I manually updated each one of the 97, (by now), updates with a shutdown inbetween each one...phew... took 6 hours but it is now updating. So the forced validation from DOS did work after all.

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

Answer:REUpgrading to Windows 10 but stops at Getting updates

Wicced209 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Actually, it MIGHT actually be that your Compaq will not handle the new Annivresary Update, as is becoming increasingly the case with the older Win7 PCs. What worked for me, and many others as well, is the following:1) Use this MS link to download and create Win10 install media: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win102) Insert that media in your PC while Win10 is running -- do NOT boot from it!3) Open the drive containing the media, right-click on setup.exe and run itThis will start the Update -- which can take 45 minutes or more. Good Luck

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire V3-572g. My laptop came with windows 8.1 installed already. Currently, my pc is being reset to factory settings because I can not figure out how to keep the hdmi from going out after windows updates. The only way I can keep get the hdmi port to work is the factory reset it. The only way from keeping the hdmi working is by turning off windows updater. However, I'd like to figure out how to keep the hdmi working without doing so. My graphics card is Nvidia 840 M. Here are a list of things I've done after my laptop stops recognizings the hdmi. Uninstall and reinstall the display drivers, both from intel and NvidiaUpdate the drivers to be up to dateDownloaded intel's utility manager to keep driver update to dateDownloaded factory installed drivers from Acer's websiteContacting microsoft and have them remotely connect to my laptopRestored back my laptop to previous working conditions (although the hdmi never worked by going to a restore point)Swapped hdmi cords and displaysAfter several hours of researching and trying different things I'm stumped. I bought this computer with the sole purpose of connecting it to a TV. I've also had this issue with another laptop which I returned. This problem isn't a hardware problem as I'm connected to the same monitor with an old desktop using the same cords. I'm guessing there is a compatability issue with windows and the display drivers when there is an update. I'm also considering downgrading to windows 7... Read more

Then I disabled automatic updates and it STILL stops Internet Explorer working. So EVERY time I start my computer I have to restore it back to before the original update. As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

i upgraded from win 7 to win 10 in early august. no problems. i've been installing all updates since then and installed updates always showed status of updates. after installing fall update i noticed my update history was erased and any updates since, like defender definition files, don't appear in the list. only one update is listed: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3103688) installed on 11/14/2015.

Its always a good idea to check your ram first. Take out one stick and see if that helps. If not then swap ram, take out one stick and leave the other stick in. Or borrow a stick of ram from a friend and try that.

Hello. 'tis I, Richard yet again with another issue. This time, however, is with a PC I have just recently installed Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium on. My PC specs are listed below.

Gigabyte Mobo GA 890 GPA UD3H
8 Gigs of Corsair 1600MMX Ram (I have 2 sticks of 4 Gig RAM, even though stupid windows says I only have 4GB)
Sound Blaster VX Sound Card.
AMX Phenom II X6 1090T Processor (and no, I do not have access to another CPU).

I have just recently acquired this PC, and I am currently trying to use Windows Update. But Windows Update doesn't seem to want to do anything. It just sits there searching for updates without doing anything at all. It doesnt stop searching for them to give me an error. I have included the Logs folder in zip format in C:\Windows. I've already tried installing Updates that are supposedly a "hotfix" without success. Help is appreciated. I can't play games (I am a PC gamer nerd) without Windows Updates (especially Direct X and other ones).

I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion 17" laptop with Windows 10 Home already installed. When I went online the automatic updates began. The download to upgrade to version 1511, 10586 started but stopped at 60%.
How do I get the download to finish the download?
Prior successful downloads and installations include:
Update for Windows 10 x64-based systems (KB3106932) and (KB3135174),
Windows malicious software removal tool (KB890830).
Security Adobe Flash player (KB3135782)

Thanks

suddenly when I turn computer on, a pop-up says windows update and firewall has stopped working. I click on each and turn on with no problems. next time computer is turned on, same pop-up appears.

is there anything I can do to keep these programs running?
please advise,
thanks,
john

Answer:windows update and firewall stops

Hello,

What might have happened here is the Windows services for these programs have been disabled. This is an easy fix. Follow my steps below:

1. Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
2. In the dialog, type "services.msc" (without the quotes). Figure 1
3. Locate Windows Update... Figure 2
3. ...and Windows Defender. Figure 3
4. Right-click on Windows Defender and select Properties.
5. Under Startup Type, select Automatic. Figure 4
6. Do the same for Windows Update. Figure 5

Restart your computer and you should be good to go.
If you are still getting the message, reply to this message.

EDIT: Woah sorry, instead of Windows Defender, find Windows Firewall instead and do step 5 for it too.

If you find my posts helpful, please help me out by pressing the little "Add to techhead287's Reputation" button at the top of this post. Thanks!

After talking to the Lexmark tech support, they verified my Impact S305 was working properly however it was probably affected by a recent Windows 7 Update download. He stated he has received numerous calls from people all with the same problem in the last week. The Printer will only print once and then the computer must be restarted or it will not accept another print command. The printer will print the job automatically after the computer restarts (no need to hit the print button again). Does anyone know which download is causing this so I can remove it on the Windows Update site?

Answer:Windows 7 update stops printer from printing

Windows updates are customized for your computer. You can look at the dates to determine which updates were installed last Tuesday. If you can't determine which update is causing the issue then use Google to determine what each of the updates were for.Your issue is the reason why I do not use Auto Update. I allow Windows to notify me which updates are available. Then I review them. I rarely allow any hardware driver updates from Windows to install. If there is a need to update a hardware driver it is better to get them from the manufacturer instead. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Hello,
every time I try to run an update on my desktop Windows 10 Pro x64 (1703) to the latest patch (KB4022725), the update is stopped and withdrawn when the BSOD caused by dxgkrnl.sys appears every time after the reboot.

I have read the [SOLVED] BSOD Due to dxgkrnl.sys topic and tried to update all drivers (via device manager) - Intel Graphic Card driver was out of date, but it didn't help - the bsod appeared again after next try.

Perfmon report and Sysnative dumps attached.

Hi guys and girls

I have used my Windows 7 Beta since May, build 7100 (x64). Its fresh install and my computer is cutting edge flagship what you can buy. Windows has worked perfectly since May, but I used last windows update, shut down the comp, went to meet my parents, came back, started computer and nothing works. I can login, but cant start even a task manager. I booted it to safe mode and I ran Spybot + Regcleaner, its clean. Question whats wrong?!

I am one of these guys who doesn't use system restore, because I know what I am doing (I'm IT pro). But this is weird, because can't even run the simplest program on normal mode.

I only downloaded 3 critical updates, I don't remember well the descriptions, but they for vulnerability fixes.

Hi,

Symantec seem to have a problem with Norton Internet Security 2003 blocking the Windows Update Page - not very handy if you want to keep your system updated.

I'm running Win. XP Pro SP1 with all updates so far until I recently installed NIS 2003. Symantec's solution is to UNINSTALL NIS => Update Windows => REINSTALL NIS afterwards - during this period your system is like an open door. Am I missing something here??

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

HI,
I hope someone can help me!

Yesterday my Asus laptop that runs Vista 32 did an automatic update, I think it was for a service pack but I didn;t really pay much attention. When the computer shut down and then tried to restart it wouldn't restart and just showed a black screen and was scrolling through some jargon and then stops at:
!! 0xc01a001d!! 9258/90091 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\...)

I then manually **** down my computer and tried to start it in all safe modes so that I can do a system restore however when I start in safe mode it starts to load the windows drivers and then stops at
Loaded: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys

What can I do to do a system restore. This Vista is driving me nuts I have never had a computer crash on me so many times as this computer that is only 12 months old. I do not want to have to re set everything up again! It's ridiculous!

How do I fix this?

Answer:Windows update downloaded and now computer stops at crcdisk.sys

Recurring issue with Windows 10 updates, including the latest "creators" update, resulting in loss of connection with SD card reader even though the card reader light continues to flash.  I've spent hours scouring the web with a huge array of solutions posted.  I think in the past an updated driver from Dell solved the problem, but not so this time (card reader driver on Dell's site is two years old).
So taking a cue from a post regarding a different model, I checked the Realtek web site for its most recent card reader driver, which is dated 7/25/17, and it worked.
I'm posting this in the hope that others with the same issue will benefit.

Hi,

Yesterday I realised that Windows Update wasn't working on my Windows 7 Ultimate N (32-bit) laptop.

It sometimes found updates but then when I selected them and tried to download them it just hung on 0 kb and 0%.

I uninstalled SP1 and Windows Update worked fine. Then , when reinstalled SP1 Windows Update stoped working - it just hangs while it says its looking for updates.

I have used two tools to try to fix it - Windows Update Diagnostic and Microsoft FixIt 50202. Neither have worked...

Any ideas??

Thanks

Stu

If you have a computer that is running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 with Realtek Audio driver installed and you try to install the Windows 8 Client and Windows Server 2012 General Availability Cumulative Update from Windows Update on the computer, but find that on restart, Windows Update stops at 13 percent during the "Configuring Windows Updates" step and you receive the following error message: Failure configuring Windows updates.
In this case you can download and apply the hotfix mentioned in KB2770816.

Good afternoon.

I've got a Windows XP SP3 laptop where Windows Firewall starts, but after a few minutes it stops.

Microsoft Update won't run right -- it has a problem I've seen mentioned, where SVCHOST will start using up every CPU cycle. I've tried several fixes but none have resolve the issue. So it's getting out of date with important fixes.

I ran a quick Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan and a quick SUPERAntiSpyware scan but nothing was found.

I tried running ComboFix (don't yell at me!). It saved registry settings and made a checkpoint, but after several minutes it never starts any of the test stages. After a while the clock stops. Sometimes the mouse pointer will still respond.

Either I've got a strange combination of problems, or I've got some malware. What's next?

Thanks,
Bill

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help
Thanks

Which computer do you want to install Win 7 on?

Do you have license?

One license = 1 machine.

Could this be caused by some sort of malware? First symptom noticed was that while browsing the web, internet explorer would sometime stop responding.

Ran 2 different virus scans, spybot, and adaware (I also keep spywareblaster updated). Nothing major found.

Then I checked windows update and found updates to be installed (I am on a 28.8 dialup with one phone line so I do not use auto update, and obviously do not manually update often enough). Update found and downloaded 11 updates but when I try to install them it fails. Microsoft has a list of possible fixes but none of them work (there are 8 total - I tried all except for the 2 regarding certificate errors, which I did not get).

Could this be malware related? any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Answer:windows update fails browser periodically stops responding

Yes this could be malware related but we have seen many cases of clean systems that could not use MS update. You could also be having a problem with your analog phone line being noisy. If you suspect spyware our normal cleanup procedures are included below:

To help us to best help you, please follow the steps below closely and in the order given and do not skip anything. If you have any difficulty, please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything along with details about any problems you may have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better. Don't be afraid to ask for additional help if you don't understand something!

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

First, let me start by saying I had another error before (80080005), but then I followed various guides from Google (maybe not the wisest place to look, I admit), but it did lead me to this topic, which is how I found this forum.

Current steps I've taken:
- Stopping Windows Update service, renaming the SoftwareDistribution in C:\Windows, starting Windows Update service again. I believe stopped the 80080005 error from popping but now Windows Update just sits there... and Checks for Updates forever.
- So I've run the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab, which is where I got the error 80070005.
- After many unsuccessful attempts to remove the error using two different methods, there came this page, which I've used before and may have caused some further breakage. I went down the list UNTIL I reached the reset winsocks thing which caused me to restart and such.Several dll's either failed to load or had an error similar to "mshtml.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found" My list looked somewhat similar to the link's.

This is where you lot come in. I came here, ran System Update Readiness Tool (completed rather swiftly... five minutes-ish?)... then WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab again and I THINK it resolved a lot of those DLLs since it came up with more errors? But I can't be sure.

But... I apologize for the messy formatting here. I've been trying to put everything I can here for you guys, but it may just have ended up as word vom... Read more

Hi together,
I have a virtual Windows 8 machine that had houndres of updates to install.
After finishing the updates and rebooting the system the machine stops (or takes very long time?) with "updating your system" 11% (for more than 12 hours).
For sure there is important data on the machine ;-).
I read about a problem with an old update (november)...
Any idea how to figure out if the machine is "only" very slow or how to proceed?

Greetings/Gre Gernot

I have a V570 running Win 7 64 bit that I've been using for about a year now. For the past few days, when I try to boot up my laptop the hard drive makes a louder, higher pitched whine than usual followed by a total freeze-up at some point in the booting process. A couple times I have gone into the BIOS the next time I booted and set all configurations to default, which seemed to work the first time. The boot priority order seems to be normal as far as I can tell. Two other times it recognized that Windows didn't start up properly and asked if I wanted to use Setup Repair (or whatever it is) which then loaded a system restore point from before I installed 14 updates to Windows a couple days ago. The laptop booted fine until I installed the updates again. Here is a picture of the updates in question, not sure how to embed images on this boardhttp://tinypic.com/r/2qlc3e0/6Anyway, I don't really feel like installing each of them individually to try and figure out which one or more are screwing things up, so I was wondering if anyone had any insight.

Answer:V570 hard drive stops midway through bootup - possibly Windows Update?

I just used OneKey Recovery and set it back to stock. The next time I turned it on it froze just before the Windows logo came up, and after a few minutes in the BIOS (where there did not appear to be any hard drive recognized in the boot order) the hard drive stopped spinning completely, after which it turned on again and made normal sounds instead of loud whiny ones. Now I'm thinking maybe it's just cold, but it's definitely no colder than 50 degrees F in my house which is well within reasonable operating range.I would like some insight if anyone has some to offer. Is it the link that's putting people off? I'm not an adbot, I swear. I know they all say that, but still.

Dell 580 running Win 7 64 bit. About 2 or 3 years old.

Started to not update for weeks. Tried all the error message fixes.

Then in a a couple of months after that it started to crash or BSOD.

So I reinstalled Win from the partition.

Get's to a certain point and then hangs. Right now it's installing 41 of 87 and won't go past that. First time I'd tried it was 1 of 194.

It did install some before this latest hang but I can't get into windows.

I'm probably going to try another re-install off the partition.

If that doesn't work, do you think buying a new Windows 7 OS disk would work?

While typing this I restarted while it was in the middle of "Installing 1........" some more installed and then quit.

Tried again and installed 35 but would not install others.

Just installed 35 of 35. Crashed, starting again at 26.

QUESTION
Would reinstalling Win 7 from the Win7 partition make a diff.
Would buying a new Win 7 OS disk make a diff.
Other suggestions?
Hate to take it somewhere to be fixed and then pay $ to have them say they can't fixed it but you owe....

My mouse has been working fine for a while but it stopped working followed by the keyboard, I put it down to a Windows update but because Windows 7 keeps bluescreening on a restore point I couldn't recover.  I contacted Lenovo got the rebuild disc for my machine, completely rebuilt it, all working fine, then after 2 days same issue, mouse stopped, keyboard stopped, restore points make no difference.  Does anyone know what windows update is causing this and if there is a fix aside from rebuilding, I can't keep doing this and I need to understand the cause really, not had it with a laptop before.  Gone back to using my old laptop until I can get it sorted.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:T510 Mouse and Keyboard stops working with Windows Update - unable to roll back, happened twice

This shouldn't happen as far as I know... Make sure all of your drivers are up-to-date before running Windows Update? Maybe some hotfix conflicts with one of the earlier drivers found on the restore discs... Not sure. Maybe avoid installing Windows Updates after restoring? Also, make sure you don't have a virus on one of your external drives. Maybe a virus is infecting your computer repeatedly.

Win7
Last thing I did was a clean install of Win7, so when I try to Check Updates, it just runs and runs but never gets any updates.

I searched around and when I found something that seemed like it was a fix, it would actually be something called a "Windows Update Standalone Installer" but that just kept running too.a

Thank you for any help.

Hi there, as the title says, I went to bed and woke up with my PC restarted with fresh updates installed. When I log onto my Windows 7, everything connected through a USB 3 port doesn't work.

I though just re-installing the USB 3 drivers from my mobo disk was sufficient but no, so I went to their website to get the install from there and nothing. Went to my Device Manager and no yellow exclamation points, so according to it everything is connected and active. So why won't my USB 3 work anymore?

I use a Gigabyte GA 990FX-A UD3 AM3+ motherboard and Windows 7. (think that's all the specs you need to know about my PC to help with my issue, if not, let me know)

Thank you. first update your win 7 if there are any updates pending applicable to win 7 only then maybe try to upgrade to windows 10, maybe that could be a bug with the update app broken and an update might be pending to fix that.

I keep getting a notice that there are 10 windows updates waiting to be installed.
They seem to download okay and then go through the process of installing.
But then I keep getting a notice that nothing was installed because of an error.
Tried to follow the instructions in Microsoft Troubleshooter and even tried using the "Fix It Tool' but nothing helps.
3 days ago I downloaded Firefox Browser and Microsoft Essentials.....could they be part of the problem?
I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

Hi, I am trying Windows 7 professional 64bit is trying to update my PC now for the umpteenth time. I ask it to download and update. It tells me that it has updated and needs to restart. When it restarts, it has a couple of attempts at configuring the updates and lets me use Windows. When I turn my PC off, I get a 'Do not turn off, etc'. When I start my PC and check to see if the install worked, I am told it hasn't, any clues please?

Answer:Windows 7 updates don't update

I have been through this today and fixed mine.
There are ways MS suggests when you right click on the failed updates and read the help files that contain links to MS downloadable tools of sorts.
After reading about and trying some of the tools with no success I took a hint I read between the lines about running the one with "service pack" in its name alone. I had 10 updates available one of which had service pack in its title. It was "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)"

I ran it alone and it took. Remaining were 4 security and 4 updates for windows and an IE9 update.

I then tried the 4 updates for windows alone and they failed.

Long story short, I tried some alone until they started working and got them all in.
Look at my screen shot and see the order in which I used. The order goes from the bottom up. The Hot Fix you see is one of MS's suggestions I tried that changed nothing.

As long as this is not every time eh?

this PC was great but not perfect for the longest time. It seems that suddenly any application is crazy slow and just opening windows takes 3-4 minutes if it doesn't crash first. Then the Adobe update and MS updates fail to install when attempted. In trying to just explore the drives each time I clicked either the + to expand folders or the 'folders' tab to explore side by side it would freeze and then crash. Once or twice while watching a video or listening to a file the IE would suddenly crash and restart all the while the application not noticing. I regularly scan the drives with Suprantispy and a few days ago I ran a disc check on the primary drive. I know there seems to be a lot of stuff on it and maybe too much. So I tried to eliminate a dozen or so gigs to give it more breathing room but it didn't appear to help much if at all. My past pleadings for help have been right on every time, I though wish it was a simple thing I could have done but your expertise is always the answer that humbles me. Thanks, Walrus

hi HussinBhy,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

With Windows 8 there was a certain service that has to be disabled "Nalperion Service" then proceed with the updates manually by 4 or by 5 updates only

If Windows 7, You just have to make sure your Antivirus is not blocking anything by disabling them temporarily
and most of all Try installing it by 4 or by 5 updates only,  as it may be overlapping some updates if you will install everything at same time.

Hello,

I recently reinstall my windows x64 ultimate edition and after several installations (microsoft updates and some drivers on my own), it appears that microsoft update is failing.

When I look at the control panel/windows update windows there is no error code, juste the white cross with a red background indicating : "check for updates for your computer".

When I hit check for updates : "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer".

In services.msc the service is running.

the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) fail to install : error 0xc8000247
I run a SFC /SCANNOW directly on win7, the window close by itself.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi Guys,
I have the same 4 updates for the last 2weeks to be updated every time I used windows update. They are for Netframework 2.0...Kb2656352, kb2518864, kb2572073 and kb 2539631. They have a green tick saying they have been installed in Windows update history. They are installed in add and remove programs.

I have done everything in the Microsoft help page I.E downloading the 4 updates and installing them in safe mode.Uninstalling them and reinstalling them. Using Microsoft fix it and Microsoft Fix it 50202.

Should I just hide the updates?

Are they really installed properly?

Is there some other fix so they won't show up next time I search for the lastest updates on Windows update website?

any ideas?

I have disable the in the settings for hardware installations for driver installations as i like to update driver myself such as sound drivers, network and video drivers. Those are basically the 3 drivers that i update including security updates. By using wushowhide, i can see the drivers updates that have been block such as intel pci serial port root, watchtimer and lpc controller and etc. Does it improve performance or should i leave it alone? What does updating those driver do?

Answer:Windows Update Driver Updates

I can only speak for myself, others may have different views. I recently had a number of problems related to Windows 10 Updates [including drivers].

For the present my policy is to go directly to the relevant manufacturer for driver updates. A review over a number of forums, Intel in particular reveals Intel and Microsoft apparently unable to resolve problems caused by updates. I'll stick with Intel for the moment.

Hello!
I've got a Windows 7 fresh installation, and the first thing I did was to try to update my windows. The problem is that windows keeps checking for updates without coming up with any results (and I did wait a lot).

I had to change my HDD, because the previous one failed altogether. I wouldn't see why there could be any compatibility issues. I have a HP Pavilion dv5-1141en and the hdd inside is a 500GB Seagate. The previous one was a 320GB WD.

I tried resetting my windows update components (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058), but it didn't work.

I really have no idea where to go from here. It's weird, given that the installation is new.

Appreciate any suggestions,

Thank you!

Windows Update has become erratic, currently gets stuck in the "looking for updates" phase. I have followed the instructions on this forum titled "Windows Update Posting Instructions." Ran the SURT with no issues reported. The SFC scan came back clean as well. There are no error codes like the example shown, on the WU screen, but at one point there was a pop-up box (I believe in conjunction with Windows Update Standalone Installer) with error 0x8024001e which may or may not now be resolved. The MS Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool has not helped. Also along the way I was advised to install Hotfix for Windows KB947821, which I did. Compressed CBS file will not upload to this post because it is too large (about 6MB).

All this is way above my pay grade as a non-tech user, but I think I have followed the instructions correctly. Any wisdom greatly appreciated!
