Retrieving Microsoft Volume License Authorization ID and License Number for Windows Server after IT Employee left company

Question: Retrieving Microsoft Volume License Authorization ID and License Number for Windows Server after IT Employee left company

Hi folks,
I am working with a company (that I have actually worked with for over 10 years on a consulting basis) and we are auditing our Microsoft Windows Server and server product licenses and preparing to upgrade Windows Server products. We have ran into a snag, where the former System Administrator left the company a few years ago, however it was understood that the information regarding the VLSC was transferred to another partner in the company. A new Systems Administrator has taken over, and we have determined that we do not have this information, including a Microsoft account username and password to access the VLSC and our Windows Server 2008R2 product keys, license agreements, SKUs, and downloads. Unfortunately, the situation became took a turn for the worse about three months ago when the partner that had this information passed away. No one at the company has access to this login information. I currently administer most of their licensing, and have access to their much of their licensing information, download, product keys, etc., but I am clearly missing some very important ones. I called Microsoft and they were of no assistance. Since I am an administrator on the network, I can create a mailbox that the VLSC was probably originally registered under, however the VLSC says that Microsoft account is not even valid, not even prompting for the password.
I have a mailbox on their Exchange Server for their domain to prove I am associated with the company, as well as Licensing IDs and Authorization IDs that I have previous sold them. The volume licenses in question are for Windows Server, and were sold with ESXi and vCenter with two R610s and MD3200. Can someone at Dell please assist me with gaining access to this important information?
Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Retrieving Microsoft Volume License Authorization ID and License Number for Windows Server after IT Employee left company

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My product ID listed for Microsoft Office Pro 2016 is not the same as my license number.

Microsoft automatically enabled/activated Office 2016 and I was not asked to enter my license number. I think the wrong license number was added by mistake. How can I fix this?

Hello,

This machine is a very common model in my environment and I have done many fresh windows installations using the OEM license key without issue. however, on this particular machine, it reports it cannot activate because it cannot contact the KMS for activation.
Again, to clarify, this is the OEM product key that has been automatically pulled over from UEFI and NOT a MAK/KMS key.

I've run diagnostics as typically requested for this type of issue and can provide any additional information you might need. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!!

I have an HP Pavilion 15 that came shipped with Windows 8.1 and I need to replace it with Windows 8.1 Pro from our VLC. I have an ISO file for Windows 8.1 Pro that I downloaded from our Microsoft Volume License Center burned onto a DVD. I tried changing the BIOS boot order to boot from the DVD. Did not work.I tried the Update and Recovery: Advanced startup: Troubleshoot: Advanced Options: System Image Recovery     This did not recognize the ISO file in the DVD Any suggestions are appreciated.

Answer:replace shipped Windows 8.1 with Microsoft Volume License 8....

Hi, Rather than changing the boot priority in the bios menu, try the following. With the notebook running, insert the Windows 8.1 Pro installation disc and Shutdown the notebook with the disc still in the optical drive. Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Boot Options Menu ( f9 ). Use the arrow keys to highlight the CDROM option and hit enter - if prompted to 'Press any key to continue....' - do so. Regards, DP-K

Hi
I am running Win8.1 Home on my laptop.  I have access to a Win8.1 Pro (volume license) through my university.

My question is - how do I do the upgrade, keeping all my data and system settings intact?
(I have looked at the info online, and the closest I have come to an answer is 'you need media, this cannot be done through the online Store'.  I have an <Win8.1-Pro-x64 .ISO> disc, is this sufficient?)

Thanks for any pointers.

I recently had to upgrade from Vista to 7 due to a virus and lost some pre installed software (MS Office Enterprise 07).  I contacted MS and they told me it was a Volume License and I needed to contact the reseller, which was HP since I ordered the computer online with upgrades.  I have a righteous version with a valid product key but I don't know how to get a viable copy of this software. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:authorization or license

Hello,I'm going to be getting some new PC's and was curious if it is legal to make an image with all the software I need, throw it on the server, get the image from the server, install, and then just change the Win7 product key afterwards. I do not have a volume license for win7. This method will save a lot of time, but i need to know the legality of it. I have Googled and couldn't find much. Ok, I've got a computer here in my office. It's running Windows XP Home on a SATA drive. The computer apparently got infected by a virus and now absolutely will not boot:QuoteA problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen... Blah blah blah (Check for viruses, remove anything new, etc. etc. etc.)...Technical information:STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7986528,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)This happens in both safe and normal mode.At this point, he's not worried about recovering any of the files from the hard drive (kept regular backups). Just wants a wipe and reinstall. This is a legitimate version of Windows (I know, I built the computer a year ago and sold him the disc). Unfortunately, he seems to have misplaced the case with the license key, but he does still have the disc. Seeing as I can't get into Windows to retrieve the key, any ideas how I might get this thing working enough to get the key off?(By the way, I did try a repair install, which didn't work. Still gets the stop error.)-=EDIT=-Nevermind. He found his license. Problem solved.

I wonder whether it is possible to download windows with a license number.

Today I bought a PackardBell laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. It did not come with a Windows disc, but there's an option to make a recovery disk. However, I suspect that this will also add all the PackardBell crap which I'm trying to get rid off by performing a new installation, so this is not really an option. Furthermore I doubt whether it's a good idea to restore your system by simply making a copy of everything on your hard drive rather than doing a clean install.

So my question is, is it possible to obtain a download or disc of Windows 7, without needing to pay a fortune. After all, I already own a license of Windows 7 for this laptop.
Will the license key on my laptop work with any install of Windows 7 Home Premium x64, whether obtained legally or not?

Getting ready to pull the trigger on around 700 licenses for Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. What will I need after I Ghost a machine with Windows 7 in order to activate these licences? I have read that you can actually setup a licensing/activation server?

Answer:Windows 7 Volume License

You'll be given 2 sets of licenses. MAK And KMS... You'll add only the MAK keys into your image.

Microsoft Volume Licensing - Product Activation

You can use an internal KMS server, but it's a pain.

Answer:Windows 7 License Volume Kit Question

You don't use Volume Licenses for sale - you use OEM System Builder licenses. - see the OEM System Builder pages here...

Volume Licenses are only for use within a single organisation.

I lost sticker with license number Windows XP to Toshiba NB100. I have an invoice.
How can I retrieve licence number?

Authorized service refused to support this topic.

Answer:No sticker with license number Windows XP to Toshiba NB100

Hi

You cannot retrieve the licence number.
First of all the sticker on the bottom of the unit was an OEM serial key. Such key cannot be used and would not work in connection with fresh installed Win XP system.

The point is that Toshiba image which was preinstalled on this notebook was already activated and this means that such key was useless.

I assume you did not create a Toshiba Recovery disk (or flash USB stick) in the past? Right?
Such disks would reinstall the Toshiba image containing activated Win XP system.

Well, usually it?s possible to order such disk [here|http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx] but I think this would not be possible anymore because of the notebook age.

Solution: you would need to purchase the Win XP with valid serial key.

Hi all, new user, first time poster and hoping you smart cats can help me. The forums have always provided answers in the past, but I feel I need to ask this one myself.

So, after three hours on the phone with MS Customer Support today (Worst time to call, by the way), I find out that this computer I purchased from a local company I did contract work for is unable to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, and therefore, unable to be upgraded to Windows 10. It has a volume license key, which is not allowed to be upgraded via store or any other method (apparently).

MS support suggested I take this back to the company I purchased it from. The issue with that is that I purchased it at very low cost because the company was going out of business. No luck there. I thought maybe it was an Enterprise copy, since those cannot be upgraded, but the System screen shows Windows 8 Pro.

So Microsoft's one and only suggestion was to purchase a "legitimate" product key, which got me to thinking it was a pirated version or some sort, but they checked and said it was not.

So, I come to you with the hopes that someone has successfully upgraded a volume license Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1, and then, hopefully, to Windows 10. I will leave this here and head off to bed, and I sincerely hope someone can be kind enough to assist. Please let me know if you need further information. Cheers!

Answer:Volume License Key'd Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Assistance Need

Volume MAK keys are not only version, but edition specific, meaning one can't upgrade with them - thus going to 8.1, let alone Win 10, is not possible without a new key.

PS: Run ShowkeyPlus to check if you have a Windows 7 OEM marker - we can then get you back to factory install and upgrade to Win 10 from there.

I have had to downgrade new toshiba laptops to windows xp to work on our server. I am now reinstalling windows xp as we have a virus problem. The laptops are in an Essex County Council School so we have an Essex Volume License for all school pc's but when microsoft asked me to activate i call the number, type in the activation code on my screen and it tells me i may be victim of counterfit software. There is no option to speak to anyone and i need help.

Answer:Problems activating windows xp pro with volume license

Does this MS info sheet help or possibly this MS answer.
It may not help now, but for the future I always copy the activation file wpa.dbl (located in C:\WINDOWS\system32) to a safe place other than my PC. In the event of ever needing it due to a problem I can the copy it back to its original location an overcome any need for re-activation. Where multiple PCs/laptops are concerned, it would be wise to identify which activation file belongs to which machine as an incorrect insertion will not generally provide activation.

Hi guys,
I am looking for some answers on how I may update my Windows 8 Pro computer to 8.1 and then to the 8.1 update, if possible.
It's a volume licensed copy of Windows and I have no access to these updates. From what I've read, I need an MSN (what ever it's called) subscription to have access to these updates. I've seen articles around the web with ways to update, such as this one William's Blog: How to upgrade Windows 8 volume license to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store but I do not want to do anything illegal or mess up my computer, so I want to be safe and ask you knowledgeable guys first. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Updating volume license copy of Windows 8 Pro

Well you could get an MSDN subscription but at $699 (How to buy) for the year it isn't a cheap way to do what you want.

Unfortunately you can't legitimately upgrade from Enterprise to Pro - you'll need to buy the normal version and do a clean install. 8.1 costs $120 from Microsoft. 8.1 Pro is $200 (Buy Windows 8.1 Pro - Microsoft Store). You might find it cheaper elsewhere but personally I would not risk it - you'll end up buying a non-legitimate key. If it was my money I'd buy the standard Windows rather than the Pro version - the only thing you would need Pro for is joining a domain and in that case your company would pay for it. All the other "advantages" have free alternatives but see here Compare Windows 8.1 Editions in case any of them are worth $80 to you.

On the bright side it is far cheaper than in the past. I paid $190 to upgrade from 7 Pro to Ultimate just to get the language packs which are now free.

This virus takes control at startup by initiating various command prompt windows and a multitude of odd processes in task manager including, but not limited to, several chrome.exe processes and gplyra.exe. Computer runs very hot. After about 30 seconds a screen pops up completely hijacking the screen which prevents you from accessing the desktop and using task manager. The virus also created its own user account and the only way to turn the laptop off is by holding the power button.

I was unable to run FRST while running windows normally, the only way I could run FRST was while in safe mode. I ran malwarebytes in safe mode previously which detected about 1200 questionable files which I deleted, but upon reboot it promptly came back as if no change were made. How do I remove this virus? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Full retail and volume license installs of Windows XP SP3

Microsoft is pleased to make available integrated retail and volume license installs of Windows XP SP3, to MSDN and TechNet Plus subscribers. Integrated retail and volume license installs are available in the following languages: Chinese Simplified, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish. Additional languages will be made available soon.

Please see the MSDN Subscriber Downloads or TechNet Plus Subscriber Downloads to obtain these releases. The main TechNet resource page for Windows XP SP3 is updated with this information.

We have recently identified a compatibility issue between Windows XP SP3 and Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS). Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers should not install Windows XP SP3 until a fix has been fully tested and made available. In addition, Windows XP SP3 will be available on Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center soon.

Answer:Full retail and volume license installs of Windows XP SP3

Cheers Nick, could do with integrated XP and SP3 cd.

Sadly folks, this route is only available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers, as no integrated XP + SP3 download is available for retail general download, you can however slipstream the full SP3 into your XP CD.

BUT if wishing to do this PLEASE start a new thread on that question as this thread is about the integrated XP SP3 cd.

Cheers.

I'm possibly interested in buying a license for Windows Server 2012/16 Standard Edition. How can I do that?

I've searched around on the net. The Microsoft Store is out of stock of the only version they offer. After an hour and half on the phone with Microsoft they weren't able to get close to offering a license for sale. Apparently, you can't simply purchase a license online and download an installation image. I've noticed a few OEM licenses for sale from 3rd party resellers I am not comfortable with and I prefer a full retail version anyway.

So how do you buy a license from a reputable organization?

Thanks.

Answer:Buying a Windows Server License

The Server stuff was just released at Ignite a week or two ago. I have to imagine MS hasn't fully rolled things out just yet. This should clear up before October ends, but in the meantime, here is some stuff to read and puzzle over:
1. search for "Windows Server 2016 licensing FAQ" in Google or wherever (can't produce a workable PDF for the resulting document)
2. Windows Server 2016 Licensing Pricing | Microsoft

When MS gets around to putting it up for retail sale, you'll be able to find it easily using Google shopping, or even the Windows Store. Not yet, though...

Can someone explain this to me better than the Microsoft website. From my understanding of it, I'm purchasing the software, but if I or my dev team want to connect(rdp or vnc) to it I need to purchase these user licenses? I think I interpreted it correctly there. But I'm kinda shaky on the device licenses. If someone could explain that a little better for me I would greatly appreciate it. I'm really only a developer and haven't had to put much effort into managing our budget/purchases before.

Answer:Windows Server 2008 CAL license

CAL is for when a user is accessing the server for a resource on it.

CAL isnt for when your logging into the machine (RDP/VNC), if you have the machine setup as a terminal server, then you would need TS CALS for each user accessing it.

I would like to upgrade a spare dreamspark Win 8 Pro key to Win 10 before the deadline. I also have a laptop that has Win 10 Home (upgraded from OEM Win 8 by digital entitlement).

With the dreamspark key, I assume that this laptop can be upgraded to Win 10 Pro. However, I would like to transfer the Win 10 Pro key to a new computer in future (after the upgrade deadline). Would the laptop be able to retain its initial Win 10 Home license?

Answer:Keep initial Home Win10 license after retail license transfer?

Not 100% certain but it looks like you will be able to do it with the new activation troubleshooter in next version of windows on Aug 2nd.

Your home licence is unaffected. You could install 10 pro as dual boot temporarily if you like.

I am a lab technician at my local college and we have a Windows 2000 server computer that runs various applications for three labs. We have both Win98 and Win2000 clients. We just installed the 2000 clients this semester, but we have been having numerous problems. My lastest problem is with drive mapping. Before we installed the new Win2000 computers, all the machines had the application drive D: mapped on all the machines and we never had any problems. But as soon as I mapped the drives on the 2000 clients, all the clients started getting errors that the number of connections to the server had reached its limit. I checked the logs on the server and it says it has been getting error with SMBserver license. I also saw that Windows 2000 pro cannot have over 10 connections max. I don't know if this has anything to do with it. Any help is greatly appreciated. The new systems are Pentium 4 2.53ghz with 512mb of ram running Windows 2000 professional.

Hi guys,

Had a question I need verified from more knowledgeable folks.

Client currenlty has a yearly resellers license for server 2008 (@$75) and 290 CAL license @ $2.50 per license. Yearly fee is somewhere around $850

From my understanding, all we need is the server license + the computers that will communicate with the server. The school is an ALL MAC school, and only connect to the mac servers. They do not connect to the windows server at all. The windows server is mainly to monitor the network, UPS and backup server for a couple of the windows PCs.

So anyway, the original plan for the previous contractors was for a SAN or a NAS served through the Windows server for each student to have access, thus requiring the 290 or so CALs. However, since we have taken over, I think I plan to move them towards using MAC environment NAS or something of the sort eliminating the need for the CALs except for the few PCs that may need it.

Is this the right recommendation?

Answer:Windows Server 2008 + CAL License Question

If a computer/user authenticates to a Windows server, even with no password Everyone file shares, you need a CAL for either the user or computer, whichever you have fewer of typically.

My enterprise has perchased many licenses of Windows 7 Pro.  including KMS activation license key.  And I have deployed the KMS activation infrastructure in my enterprise network.
Recently, we bought a set of Opliplex 3010 , 7010 & 9010 PCs, nearly 100 PCs. All of them are N-series without pre-installed Windows 7 by Dell factory.
I tried deploy OS and many enterprise APPs to these PCs through network , using MDT.

The OS image I used in MDT is Window 7 Pro Volume License Edition which was from Microsoft volume license site. But the KMS method cannot activate Windows 7 Pro. on Optiplex 3010, 7010, 9010 .

After deployment, the PCs telled that the the volume license key is invalid, MAK is required. Windows cannot be activated.

But the issue has never come out on any other computers of our enterprise before.
I have been searching for the solution on internet, but get nothing. And some one said that the BIOS somewhere is locked or modified by Dell to prevent
prated operating system. But the OS and KMS we are using is lawful.
Can any one tell me how to activate our volume licensed Windows 7 Pro. by the KMS infrastructure in my enterprse? Thanks!

Answer:Volume license activation (KMS infrastructure) cannot activate Windows 7 Pro. on Optiplex 3010, 7010, 9010 ?

Hi,
did you purchase these computers without any OEM Windows license?
Volume Licensing agreements only offer "upgrade", not "full" - an existing license such as OEM, will have the necessary SLIC table in BIOS populated, and this is usually what VL products look for, to confirm legitimacy.
You can use the MGADiag utility from MS to confirm the SLIC table in BIOS has been populated.
Without the SLIC table populated in BIOS, it may be necessary for you to use MAK not KMSDon

Hello my name is Adam. I am a desktop/lan admin for a warehouse supply company in New York. We run a strictly Windows 2000 domain with about 70 computers and maybe 3 or 4 Windows XP machines. I recently enabled a Terminal Services Server to allow 3 or 4 of my users to run database intensive Apps on the server. The reason for this is when they use specific functions in our "in house application" the app freezes up until it has finished its process (allocation of goods for large orders, takes about an hour tops). The app freezes up to do its job and the user is left with nothing to do because they cant touch the app until its done. So by enabling terminal services for them, they can run there allocations on the Terminal server, minimize it and keep doing there work on there computers.

Now, along with the Terminal Service Server, I am aware I need a Terminal service license server enabled on the network within 90 days. I have yet to enable a license server because I am somewhat unclear on its neccesity. I have read in the microsoft documentation

that machines with Windows 2000 on them already have built in licenses and therefore you do not need to purchase additional licenses. The documentation also states that if you do not enable a license server, anyone without a pre issued license will not be able to connect. Hi,

I thought that I would ask this question before running the diagnostic tool referenced above, in case there is a simple yes or no answer to this so as not to waste peoples' time.

Last November I built a new computer and purchased a copy of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit from eBay. I had some difficulty installing it due to the fact that I had to use the Windows DVD and data on the ASUS DVD to create an ISO file so that the copy of Windows 7 to be installed would have support for USB 3.0. I finally got it to install and I have been running the computer for about 9 months without difficulty. Then on Sunday afternoon, I noticed a message in the lower right-hand corner of the screen telling me that my copy of Windows was not genuine.

I right-clicked on Computer in the Start menu, selected Properties and then attempted to re-enter my product key that came with the Windows 7 DVD that I bought. I got the message that the product key had been blocked by Microsoft. I called a number for Microsoft and was told that the license had been activated too many times and I would need to contact the seller to get an extension. The seller is no longer on eBay. I had not activated the license since last November, so I don't know why it took Microsoft nine months to figure out that the software was not genuine.

If Microsoft is telling me that the license has been activated too many times, is there any use in running the tools referenced above? Is is possible they are just looking at information on ... Read more

Answer:Microsoft says I've activated my Windows 7 license too many times.

I would estimate that 90%+ of Windows software sold on eBay is counterfeit in some way. A lot of these scams utilise old previously used Multiple Use keys that are sold to businesses or issued to MSDN members. It would appear that you have fallen victim to one of these unscrupulous sellers

Follow the information here ...Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions and post the logs requested. One of our Activation specialists should be able to confirm the status of the Key you have.

If it does turn out that you have a key you could try contacting eBay with the details of the seller and your purchase information and they may process a refund for you. Another option is to contact Microsoft, and report that you have been sold a counterfeit copy of windows that you purchased in good faith, They have been known to investigate the seller and provide a free valid key to the user

Hi,

Answer:Volume License

The people to contact for volume licensing (multi-user setup) information would be Microsoft -> Microsoft Volume Licensing - Product Activation

I very much doubt that XP will be available, and it wouldn't be a worthwhile long-term investment anyway since support will end sooner than later.

You can put your tinfoil hats away now.Two weeks ahead of the global launch of Windows 10, Microsoft has finalized the terms of its license agreements for the new operating system. I've had several days to study the documents in detail, and I can report that there are no surprises, no gotchas, and no hidden subscription traps waiting to be sprung in two or three or four years.Sorry to disappoint you, conspiracy theorists.Microsoft has consistently said that its new "Windows as a service" model doesn't change the basic licensing terms for Windows. How would I find out the license/serial number for my NT 4.0 Workstation? Got the PC used with software installed. Need to re-install but I would like to use same license/serial number as the one currently installed. How can I find out what the current license/serial number is?

Answer:License/serial number for NT 4.0 Workstation

There is a ProductID value in the registry, but it is not the CD key for re-install. I believe that MS uses that to correlate to the Key. Perhaps you can contact them with that value and request a key. I have heard that with a proper explanation, they will send you one. It is in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion.

Good Luck!

Hi

Just a quick question regarding Microsoft office license installs.

I have just been working on an unbootable computer. Prior to this I asked the user what she would like me to back up regarding docs, music etc etc.
In conversation she told me that she had Office 2003 on the system, her software allowed her three licences to install on three different systems which she had done. I managed to fix the computer without loosing anything in the end.

My question is, would I have been able to reinstall Office and activate it just by reinstalling and supplying the VLK if I had reformatted and reinstalled the Operating System.

Thanks in advance of any replies.

Hi guys. I've been doing some Googling but I can't seem to find a satisfactory solution on this.

After the 29th, I'd like to install Windows 10 on every computer at our small business's office (around 10 computers), so I'd like to get a Volume License if possible.

I should make it very clear that NONE of the computers are valid for the "free upgrade" offer, none of them have any previous genuine copies of Windows 7 or 8. I'm looking to buy a brand new Volume License here, but I can't seem to find who to buy it from.

I'd prefer not to buy a Volume License for 8.1 and THEN upgrade, but even if I do that, the Volume Licensing page on Microsoft.com is very confusing, I don't really want to ring up a sales person, is there not a web page where I can just type in my credit card and buy it?

You can get them through CDW.com. This is where you want to start at first. Microsoft Volume Licensing Home Page

Answer:Norton Ghost 2002 license number

Welcome to TSG.

If you made a floppy it will give you the license number when it first boots to the floppy. Just write it down before you continue with making the image or restoring. I don’t think I ever registered my copy although it is a legal one. It posts the license number regardless. Not sure why they do that.

Another alternative is to use the utility that comes with the new hard drive to clone the old drive over to the new one. Just hook up the new drive as slave, clone it with the utility and then set the new drive as master. If you got the drive OEM with no software you can download the utility from the manufacturer’s site.

When I go to activate it though, it just comes up with an error message with the error code 0xX004C020 which I understand to mean volume license limit has been exceeded. Obviously his shouldn't apply though because I have rebuilt my machine and not installed Windows onto a new machine.

In the past when I have done this, it comes up with an error message along with a license server ID number and a telephone number to call to activate it over the telephone. I would normally then go through the automated service, enter the server ID and be given a new activation code and it would activate. As a server ID number if not coming up, I can't do this. I've spoken to someone at the Microsoft activation centre and they say they can't help without the server ID...

What's going wrong and how do I go about getting this server ID? Any suggestions appreciated.

Answer:Trouble activating with volume license - Help please!

0xC004C020 - The activation server reported that the Multiple Activation Key has exceeded its limit.

This is an MAK Key - All such Keys have a predetermined number of activations allowed, and this number is recorded on the MS Activation Servers.
In your case, this number has been exceeded - or the subscription for the licenses has not been renewed.
Either way, you will have to contact your System Admin for assistance and/or a new Key.

I have a Vostro laptop running Win 7 pro x86. I want to upgrade it to Win 8.1 pro x64 and have a volume license key. The optical drive on the laptop is broken so I need to install from a USB stick. I created a bootable USB drive from here:
Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

The laptop boots from the stick, but when I input my license key, a message pops up saying it can't verify the product key.... please check your installation media. I have the laptop connected via ethernet cable, so I don't believe it's a connection issue.

Is installing from a USB stick not supported for a volume license key?

Answer:8.1 pro volume license key fails when installing from USB

It appears you need to use volume license software and not OEM/Retail software

I need to know if Windows Vista Business has Volume Licensing? I know Enterprise does, and also... Whats the main difference between the two versions. I really can't find anything to significant between the two. Except one has MDOP (Enterprise). I just want to know if we should spend the extra cash. Your insight would be most appreciated. Hello all,

I should first mention that I am a XP fanatic, have 4 computers, 1 desktop with xp pro, 1 laptop with xp, one desktop (this one) with win 7, and one desktop with win 8.1. Of those 4 puters only 8.1 has the (free) Win 10 notification. My problem is I can't get the win 10 notification on this 7 install, and I suspect that's because of one of 2 or 3 reasons, itemized below. And BTW I want to install win 10 on 7 instead of 8 as a test because I don't want to mess up 8.1 before I know how good (or bad) 10 is for me, so I want to use 7 as a guinea pig first. I have spent too much time and effort getting 8.1 to look and act like XP. I never actually wanted 7 or 8 but since M$oft forced everyone and stopped supporting XP it seems I have to get around M$oft somehow, or else go to linux (which I am actually using on another HD).

(1) My 7 install is a copy (DVD burn) of a school M$oft Win 7 system grant and the 7 copy won't allow 7 activation (???)
(2) I am networking all 4 computers of which 8 is the host and the other 3 puters are clients, so win 10 can't be "shared" with networked puters (???)

I have been unable to formally activate my win 7 copy install even though it works fine and has all updates, the same as any activated M$oft windows does. However in spite of the functionality of the 7 copy install I can still get the warning that this copy of windows is not genuine. I delete that irritation by using SLMGR -REARM. Of course that's only a temporary fi... Read more

Answer:Win 10 upgrade on Win 7 volume (site?) license install?

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I doubt there is any shortcuts to genuine copy of 7
I wonder if you even have sp1 on the 7
I'd contact the school on how to get the install genuine

Or just buy a oem/ system builders copy and enter that activation key they are still pretty cheap on Newegg/.. less than win-10 pro but similar priced as 10 Home version that is about 100.us
10 Pro for 140.us

I just reinstalled XP Home on a Compaq system after a couple upgrades. I only had a retail disk handy and it won't take the key that came with the system (I'm assuming it's a volume license). When I go to activate Windows, it says the key is invalid. Is there any way to get around this and force it to take the Compaq key?

Worst case I suppose I can order the recovery disks from HP, but I'd rather not have to wait.

Edit after reading sticky: I'm not asking for anything illegal. I have a good key, just not the disk. I'm just trying to find a way to make it work with a retail disk. Mods, if this is in a grey area or otherwise not allowed, PM me and delete the thread.

Answer:Installing XP Home retail with volume license key?

The key on the case is an OEM key, and won't work with a retail disc. You're options are either to find someone that will let you borrow their OEM disc, or order one from HP.

I have AVG 9 (not free), upgraded from 8.5 a few weeks ago. On Dec. 6 it stopped working - even though my license doesn't expire until Dec. 6, 2010, the license is now shown as expired. Reactivating it doesn't help, copying and pasting from the email I received does nothing.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the program, the license is still showing as expired.

I've gotten no response from AVG at all. Can anyone suggest the next step?

Hi Community I have two E550s core i5Upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7 then worked well for 3 months but now the optical drive is not working. I want to install Linux on this because I am testing so many applications and need something stable  core i7It faced so many challenged when a tech was installing some applications. I had to format and use a windows 7 media disk. But now need license as it is giving a black screen and message saying software is unlicensed  They are all fairly new (about 3 months old) and still under warranty and can default to windows 8.

Hi
I am attempting to perform an interactive in-place of Win 8 Pro to Win 8.1 Pro.  The computer was installed using volume license media and activated using a MAK key.  I have now have a Win 8.1 Pro ISO downloaded from the VLSC website, just as the
original 8 Pro ISO was downloaded from.
The problem is that when execute setup.exe from the 8.1 Pro ISO and go through the steps I only see the following options:

Keep personal files onlyNothing
However I was expecting to see:

Keep Windows settings, personal files and appsKeep personal files onlyNothing
According to this link the upgrade should be able to upgrade windows settings and apps
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/library/jj203353.aspx
I have read in other postings on the net that if the languages are different there won't be an option to keeps apps and windows settings.  The volume license ISO that was used originally to install 8 Pro
(SW_DVD5_Win_Pro_8_64BIT_Eng_Intl_MLF_X18-16135.ISO) installs as English (United Kingdom) and then I change it to an Australian local.  The Belarc audit tool reports:

Install Language: English (United Kingdom)
System Locale: English (Australia)
The volume license 8.1 Pro ISO is named SW_DVD9_Win_Pro_8.1_64BIT_English_-3_MLF_X19-84085.ISO which is still an English language ISO.
Is the problem related to language or is there some other reason?
Thanks

My workplace has a volume license product code for Windows 10 Pro. We tried updating 2 computers to the Fall Creators Update when it became available through Windows Update today, but both of them were deactivated and will not allow us to reactivate.
Prior to the update, the Activation page in the settings shows 20 X's followed by the last 5 characters of our volume license product key. After the upgrade process completed, the last 5 characters on both computers was changed to the same sequence that is completely different from our volume license product key.
When we try to reactivate by entering our product key, we get error code 0x803F7001. I've updated two computers at home that are "activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account."
This appears to only be a problem with volume licensing. Has anyone else experienced this issue or know if there is a way to reactivate these computers where Windows has been deactivated?

When I first built my computer I got everything from newegg quite quickly except my copy of winxppro sp1, which, came about a week later due to some difficulties on their end. During this time, i built my computer, and loaded it with a VL key cd so i could see if I had everything working ect. By the time my copy of xp came, i figured it didn't matter to install over, and used my copy VL copy that i had put on it and never opened the copy of xp i got and just shelfed it for the time being. Now that i realise VL copy is a royal pain with updates and the likes, i want to import my retail key into my computer over the VL key so i can do updates normally, but i have alot of things set the way i like, and lack room to back up most things even if i did want to format.

So, all in all, I've been looking for a way to change my key from a VL to a Retail so i can get updates and all.

So far, I've thought of copying the pidgeon.dll file and the other 'corporate files' that people normally copy from a VL cd, from my Retail cd, and doing a 'backwards' to retail conversion, but i figured getting some input on whether or not that's a good idea from here would be a good idea first.

Also, if anyone knows an easier way to make this 'conversion' that'd be great too, thank you all.

Ok, heres the deal.

I was in computer retail for many years, participated in the Intel retail edge program 3 or 4 times, and thus have 3 or 4 valid, legal, XP Pro CD keys in my cd key list. However when it came time to format the system after a virus infection, I didn't have any of the XP Pro OEM install disks, and therefore I hastily installed a volume license edition I did have kicking around. This obviously impairs optional windows updates, etc, so I began searching, and eventually found a friend that has a sp2 OEM install disk.

Now I'm looking to switch over the system to a legal version of windows, and although I have everything backed up, I would rather not spend the next 6-8 hours reinstalling everything. So heres my plan: Slipstream a new disk with my raid drivers, and do a "system repair" off of the cd. This should replace all the volume license files with retail ones, then boot into recovery console, and use a vb script I found online that runs from a command prompt to change the cd key to a valid retail OEM key.

Can anyone poke holes in this solution, or offer a better one for what I am trying to do?

Thanks.

Question: Server License Key

I found that SBS has a 1 time deal to use the key, and then even if installing on the same machine, you have to call to get a new key. I wrote down the key and wonder if I can reactivate a reinstall using the same key. I am hoping I do not need to do a scratch install, but if I do, I dont want to have to call the indians if I dont need to.

I'm looking at setting up windows 2003 terminal servers all over the place to replace the awful thing people are currently doing here - vncing servers with one small shared password among everyone <holding my hands over my ears for the backlash>. Don't blame me, it's another awful legacy I have to get rid of...

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

2. Also, I know that Windows XP has an RDP client, I've used before on many occasions, but what about all the Windows 2000 clients that I still have out there. What should I do for them to access the new Terminal Servers?

Answer:Terminal Server license server(s)? RDP client for Windows2K?

I'm not 100% sure on #1, but I believe that the TS licensing becomes integrated into the AD, so if one DC goes down, the other one will be able to check licensing. On another note, if you are using the TS for administration only, I don't believe you needs the TS Licensing to be installed.

For #2, you can download the latest version of the RDP client from MS's website. It should also be available through Windows Updates, although I think Win2K isn't supported any longer, other than Critical Updates.

ok, maybe some one has some options for me. Recently I had to run a repair installation on a 2003 windows server. System would not boot in any fashion... Apparently the other technician did not copy the key correctly and now after I ran the install I cannot activate the software when prompted because the key he recorded is invalid. Luckily the clients can access the networked drives, but it is impossible to login to the actual server without the key. Can anyone please give me some real options? this is a major problem.

Thanks in advance.

Linux running Fedora 14 is the NFS server and License server for my Toon Boom Animation software. Mac Pro running Mountain Lion is the client.

This set up previously worked but after a power outage the software will not open on the Mac since it cannot verify the license with the linux license server.

Network setup:

Motorola Uverse Wireless Router/Modem ---> TrendNet Switch ---> Server and Client

Manual IP addresses set for the server and client

I have to use NFS Manager on the Mac to be able to view and edit the NFS mounting, but upon starting it, I recieve an error message saying that the Mac has reverted back to Bonjour only operation and that there is a possible problem with the forward and backward name resolutions.

I think the router is handling the DNS, and I don't know how to resolve the issue... I'm not all that knowledgeable about advanced networking and have been barely getting by until now.

Both computers are talking to each other since I can access files that are on the Mac from the Linux machine via SMB. Haven't figured out how to access linux files from the Mac though.

Who do you go to for licensing questions? Is there a sales line you can email at MS or something? I normally purchase our MS software from CDWG, but they don't seem to have the level of knowedge I am wanting. I guess I am looking for someone at MS to tell me what I need so if it's not right I can say "Hey, this is what you told me to get"

I am trying to set up two servers. One is a win2k3 terminal server serving 25 machines and 65 users. 50 of the users are students and thus not employees of the company, but the other 15 are. I would think a 25 machine license would make the most sense since 50 users use a 10PC lab.

The second part is an exchange 2k3 server running in win2k3 and only the staff have accounts on here. Now I want to sync email accounts with login accounts so does this mean I would have to run this exchange machine as a PDC and would that force me to also count student login accounts toward the exchange box? Only the staff have emails so I should be able to get away with only 15 user licenses here I would think. All students get email on a linux mail server because they don't need any of the calendaring/contact sharing that the staff need.

Can I run on machine in user and one in machine mode? If I do that can I still maintain TS server logins in a PDC exchange server or do all users end up with accounts on each box that will not password sync?

Thanks for any tips & advice.
