Question: Thinkpad X220 Tablet not indicating battery

A battery firmware popped up to download. I downloaded it but it could not finish and restarted my computer. Now, it is indicating that I do not have a battery though I clearly do. What can I do to fix this?

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad X220 Tablet not indicating battery

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The main reason why I chose the x220 tablet was for school purpose. Most of my classes are notes you buy from the teacher (40-50$ a booknote) or powerpoints which I have to print out (Around 800 powerpoint pages, 400 papers per class). So thread is a good thread for all the students out there.  I was a big fan of Asus for their good quality hardware and for their EEE pc brand. I had a netbook, with a 10 hours battery life. So battery was my main concern at that time. I was bringing it in the lab and loved it for its small size and long life battery. Then one day, I saw a new product from Asus at CES 2010, the ep121. I was like ?wow, that tablet would be great for school!? I then did some research to find out more about it. That?s where I found the poor 3 hours battery. So I continued my research to find a tablet that would fill in this job. That?s when I found out about lenovos thinkpad tablet. I was impressed about the overall laptops but the x220 tablet stood out? 19 hours battery? I couldn?t find anything better. So I ordered it. For all the students who think 1300$ is expensive, let me tell you this. How much do your texts books cost? From my experience, I spend 1-2 reference book, 3 text book and lots of prints out a semester. My spending would be around 200-300 $ every semester. Right now, with my tablet, I?m not buying or printing anything for school. I borrow my friend?s books, scan them (process that takes haft an hour per text book) a... Read more

Answer:Why I chose thinkpad: x220 tablet

Thanks for the student's perspective. I'm currently waiting for mine and plan on using it in class as well. My previous setup was an SL410 with a Wacom Bamboo, so I can appreciate how awesome it is to cutout the paper from note taking process. I didn't progress quite as far as you with scanning textbooks though... baby steps I guess. As for the Fn key, I read that you can change that in the BIOS. I'm sure someone more computer literate has already outlined exactly how to do this on the X220t. Not sure if the keys themselves are swappable though...?

Hi I'm having some problems with some of the multitouch commands. For instance the scrolling to the end of the document, when scrolling with 3 fingers and the show open windows thingy with 4 fingers, similar to the mac "active corners". I keep on hitting these effects by mistake when handwritting in files with pdf annotator for example. On top of that, theres an option that logs you of, I haven't figured out the finger combination yet, but it happens a lot. How do I turn of some of the multitouch commands while keeping scrolling with two fingers and turning with two fingers. I only managed to turn of all at once. Or have you managed to link a lot of very different options, so its all or nothing, even though some things are good and some are useless?

Hi, all: I found the touchpad, when the computer is plugged in to an outlet and battery is at 100%, jumpy and it misclicks often. This can be repeatedly demostrated by holding a finger in the middle of the touchpad; while doing so for 3-10 seconds, the mouse cursor would jump around by itself. Note that the issue exists on other regions of the touchpad as well but is less obvious.  My best guess is that this is a hardware voltage related issue as 1. my finger feels the increase in current from the trackpad; 2. the issue is completely gone when the computer is on battery; 3. reinstalling the driver doesn't help; and 4. it has been reported that the touchpad is jumpy when plugged in with a 90w adapter: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/90w-adapter-leads-to-unusable-jumpy-touchpad/t... The system (Product ID: 4294CTO) is competely new (that is, I have received it last Thursday). It has a Core i7 processor, a 65W adapter, one 4GB RAM, and multitouch screen input. The sensitivity of the touchpad was set to the default value (second step of the sensitivity slider from left).  This issue renders the computer unusable. For instance, the touchpad would u... Hi, Yesterday I bought a used X220 Tablet - the version with Gorilla Glass - and installed Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) on it.What a great little computer this is! But what disappointed me was the lack of precision of the pen that came with the tablet. Unfortunately I could not find a setting - or program - to calibrate the pen. On this forum I learned that a lot of owners have to deal with a pen that is not accurate. On one of the posts I read it was mentioned that the digitizer in the X220 Tablet is made by Wacom, so I went their website for a recent drivers. Luckily, I soon found an appropriate tool, the Wacom Hardware Check, on ftp://ftp.wacom-europe.com/pub/WINDOWS/WacomHardwareCheck.exe . After downloading and running it, I was told:"You have hardware that is compatible with the Wacom FEEL driver. You can download the latest driver here: http://www.wacom.com/feeldriver " The URL led to a file on http://cdn.wacom.com/u/drivers/TabletPC/ISD_DualTouch_732-12.exeThe file is about 24 Mb in size. After downloading and installing it, I was able to calibrate the screen, with 25(!) calibration points. Accuracy is great now; not only in landscape, but also in portrait mode! Since I found no reference on this forum to the Wacom FEEL driver in combination with the X220 Tablet running on Windows 10, I thought it might be interesting to others in this forum. Cheers!

Dear All: I have a thinkpad X220 Tablet which does not have the WWAN 3G/GSM card , and I was looking to get one for it since it has the sim card slot and the antenna .But I remember that my Thinkpad W500 has the WWAN module and since I got the X220 Tablet I do not use that one outside of my house anymore and now it's more a desktop , I thought maybe I could put the WWAN module on the W500 inside the X220 Tablet. I know they both use the same port but I'm not sure if they physical fit and if it's really possible to do so. So if you guys know anything about this please let me know, thank you very much guys.

Hello,I've just bought my new tablet and, overall, I a very impressed with its features. One feature I thought was particularly cool was the fingerprint reader to log on. Sadly, the software didn't come with laptop and, when searching "fingerprint" in Start and scanning over the control panel, it was not there. I have read most of the discussios here concerning my problem, but found no answers and searched everywhere suggested. I then installed the driver from the lenovo site and got as far as the screen with a hand to register one of your fingerprints, clicked the thumb icon and it said that there was no such device detected on my laptop. I was hoping to get it working soon but if I can't find a solution it doesn't matter - It's not absolutely essential/urgent. I was just a little disappointed that the device did not work. Thanks in advance for any help, Doug.

Answer:Fingerprint reader on new thinkpad tablet X220 "not detected"

hey DB-1618,welcome to the forums and for this, could you check at Device Manager and see if the fingerprint device is listed in it? It should be under biometrics.if it is there, uninstall it and then let windows install its generic drivers. restart your unit and reinstall the software which you got from the Lenovo Support Site

Hi, Several days ago, when I booted my Thinkpad X220 tablet PC from hibernation, its monitor "freaked out": at the beginning it was blinking, afterwards it was just black unless I pressed CTR+ALT+DEL (then it showed pretty much normal screen), however, if I then chose any option or press ESC, the screen became black again. I tried to boot in a safe mode, some other stuff -- nothing worked. Eventually, I connected external monitor, and then the monitor of laptop suddenly recovered. Today I hibernated laptop again (unfortunately). And when I turned it on, the screen "freaked out" again. But at this time nothing, including external monitor, helped. Interesting thing, the internal monitor is able to show lank page in Firefox, however, then the page loads, the monitor becomes black. If I "turn off" blue color, then the monitor is working (however, it is a bit ugly). It is weird as when laptop boosts, the screen is generally blue. Any ideas what is going on with my laptop PC?Cheers, SK

Answer:Monitor problems after hibernation (Thinkpad X220 tablet PC)

I would suggest you to update the monitor driver, display driver and BIOS.

Monitor driver can be download from the mentioned below web link.

BIOS update can be download from the mentioned below web link.

This should resolve the issue for you.

Was about to order the X220 Tablet today when I noticed that ThinkPad protection was not listed on the order screen. According to a rep, 3yr On-site + TPP is $429. This comes out to $333.41 for the TPP and 95.59 for the on-site. Does it make sense to pay that much? The cost of 3YR onsite + TPP on other systems is much lower. It is only 259.00 for the X220 (non-tablet), W520, and T420s. Why is the X220 Tablet TPP so much higher? Do they break that much more often?

Answer:Cost of ThinkPad Protection too high? It is $200 more on X220 tablet vs other TPs.

I called in to Lenovo to purchase this warranty and the product that the rep billed me for was 78Y1652. Since then, I've spoken with several people (mainly because Lenovo manages to screw up orders in every way possible) and none of them have said anything against attatching that item (which is for 3 year onsite + TPP) to my laptop, 4294-CTO. http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... is the link to the product.. though a few days ago (5/25/11) it was on sale for $201.75.. so if you can hold your breath until another sale then more power to you, however do note that Lenovo requires that if you are purchasing a TPP warranty, that the purchase be made within 90 days of system purchase. Edit: My original sales rep was completely wrong about the warranty. That is NOT a valid part number for a 3 year warranty + thinkpad protection for the x220 tablet. >.>

Hello, Has anyone tried installation of a sierra wireless MC7750 card on a X220 tablet? I've gotten hold of a MC7750 and intend to install it on my X220 tablet and try it with Verizon 4G network. Thanks,Anand

Answer:Thinkpad X220 Tablet - Installation of sierra wire...

I have not tried it, but I can tell you that most likely it will not work in the default configuration.  Lenovo machines have a whitelist that checks to see if the WWAN card inserted into the machine is regonized and certified.  If the machine doesn't recognize the card it will display an 1804 error.  Since Lenovo doesn't yet sell these cards yet, it's unlikely that this card is on their whitelist. Some people modify their BIOSes to recognize cards that Lenovo hasn't put on their list yet.  I believe you can find such moded BIOSes here: http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Removed-whitelist-removal-Lenovo-ThinkPad-x220-v1-21 or alternatively maybe in the forums in http://www.mydigitallife.info/ There may be newer versions of the BIOS in the same forum, but I haven't checked in a while. I've been waiting for months for Lenovo to support the MC7750, or another LTE card like it.  I've been told by several sales people that "it's right around the corner".  Pretty much hogwash so far.  I haven't gone the step of ordering one of these card yet hoping that Lenovo will officially support it soon.  Please post back though if you do end up moding your bios.  I'm curious to know how well it works.  Also read up on taping pin 20.  Some people say it's necessary in addition to moding the bios. Good luck.

i ordered my x220t yesterday after much consideration . visually.. I HATE HOW THE BATTERY LOOKS sticking out from the bottom, i dont mind it sticking out from the back.. just not the bottom. however i do love the specs of the system. this battery needs to be worked on. so even tho i bought this system.. i call on lenovo to make a new battery for this system that is flush to the bottom of th system and offers the same battery strength as the ugly one.  i would buy that in a heartbeat. SO PLEASE!

Answer:lenovo x220 tablet 6 cell battery

Unfortunately what you're asking for isn't possible as a physically larger battery will always have a higher capacity than a larger one assuming they both use the same technology. There is a 3-cell battery for the x220t that fits flush in the x220t but of course it only has half the capacity of the 6-cell battery.

Answer:Thinkpad Tablet X220 the upper glass of screen cracked a little

Hi sweetaaronm and welcome to the community,

You're probably going to have to call service to find out how much and how long it will take?  I'd do that anyway, just so you know.  It is going to be expensive.
Is there any computer repair shops locally that you trust?  I'd sit down with the phone book and make some calls.  You're going to have to know which screen you have so you can have them get the right one.

If Lenovo service has the screen in stock, the turnaround for the repair should be pretty fast.

We discovered this problem in early August with our new X220 tablets.  We have a 1-to-1 tablet pc program.  About 75% of our freshmen class has experienced this issue.  The tablets are running on battery power with the extended battery slice.  The units will spontaneously just power off.  Not a clean shutdown but just a power off.  The batteries are in various states when this happens, most of the time both batteries are almost fully charged.  I've witnessed this dozens of times with the students in my classes.  We found out that this also is affecting another high school in our consortium.  We bulk purchase our tablets with several other high schools.  The other high school that is experiencing this issue has the same model and the same manufacturer date 6-11-2012.  We estimate 200-300 units are affected between the two schools.  Lenovo product engineers are working on finding the source of the problem, but we currently have many frustrated students and parents.  Just curious if anyone else has seen this issue with X220 tablets and slices that were manufactured around the first part of June?

Hi, I own a 2 year old ThinkPad X220. Till a few days ago, I used to get 3 hours battery backup on my laptop. A couple of days ago, my laptop battery dropped to 5% very soon. Then, it would charge upto 100% in 15 miinutes. I tried to do a battery gauge reset using Lenovo power management tool. Since then, my battery has been on 0%. I tried to do the trick of removing battery and AC power and pressing the power button for 10 seconds, but it didn't work.Since my laptop runs fine on AC, I dont think it is the fault of the power cord. Also, I run a dual boot with Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7, so it is unlikely to be an OS problem. Now, when I plug in the AC adapter with battery, the charging light falshes green thrice and after about 5-6 seconds, it flashes orange twice and green once, after which the light goes off.Is my battery really dead or is it my system's fault? Please advise me what to do.Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello there, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 42914CG that will not charge my 9 cell battery nor the 4 cell battery I bought extra.  This computer is only a few months old, so I can just send it to service, but I'd prefer to fix it myself if it's just a simple issue of updating the BIOS firmware or similar. Observations: When I pull out the power cord from a running laptop, it immediately blacks out, so I assume the battery is totally flat. When I plug the power cord in a shut down laptop, the battery lamp on the laptop lid flashes green three times and then stays off. When I plug in the power cord, power on, and enter the BIOS, the laptop battery lamp doesn't indicate charging; usually it would flash orange, then green, and finally stay green.  (The point of entering the BIOS here is to keep operating system-specific issues out of the equation). When I boot into Ubuntu 11.10, the battery indicator says that the laptop is on AC power and the battery is charged 5%.  The history charge graphs show that no charging has been happening the past few days. Here is the battery-related information I can retrieve from the ACPI driver:[email protected]:~$ tree /proc/acpi/battery//proc/acpi/battery/??? Answer:Thinkpad X220 battery not charging

Zta,

This seems odd that the situation has affected two unrelated batteries.

I know we had some no charge issues on other batteries and we've released firmware updates to address them, but I don't see the X220 listed.  Here is an example of the firmware update for some other models..
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-75738

I mention these in case you are searching ...

Since those don't apply, I can think of several possibilities...

1) Software settings.  If you were running windows, with our power manager, you could customize the charging start / stop thresholds.  Since you are running Linux, I don't know if there are similar controls.  I'm also not sure, but if the system were off and the battery needs charging and you plug it in, I would expect it to charge regardless of the settings.    I don't think this is it because you note they won't charge even with the system off.

2) Out of spec AC adapter.  It is possible that the output from the AC adapter is out of spec - under volt or under current - less than expected wattage.  You can easily test voltage with a digital multi-meter if you have one.  Given the degraded system performance, this might be the first thing to try.   Are you running the 65 or 90w?

Another reason to start there is that service can just ship you another AC adapter and you don't have to send in the system.

Hi, I brought my X220 in 2011 with a 9 cell battery and would get about 14 hours battery life out of it. The battery aged and would not hold full capacity so I brought a new 9 cell battery from Lenovo in December 2015. But the new battery only gives me 4 hours of battery life. What happened to the other 10 hours I used to get in 2011? Hello I am using ThinkPad X220 with 9-cell battery (FRU P/N 42T4940)Yesterday, I update my system with Lenovo system Update, and the battery firmware update is the only important updates that I (try) to install. Long story short, when the program said that the sytem will automatically shuts down after the firmware update is complete, I clicked next to start the upgrade. Suddenly my system shut down right after the firmware upgrade started and when I turn it on again, it said that the firmware upgrade was failed and I need to turn my computer off. After I turn my computer on, the Power Manager said that my battery canot be charged because of poor condition from normal wear (my battery still can hold more than 85% of charge, more specifically 87%).I even tried to update it again using Windows 7 but no luck. From that on, I cannot charge my battery despite any ways that I tried (reset power gauge, take off the battery while the system turned on and charge it when it turned off, etc) Is there any solution for my problems?Anyway I am using the latest version of BIOS available (1.42 - EC 1.24)I am using UEFI booting with GRUB as main bootloader (Windows 10 and Debian 8.0) but when using Windows 7 I am using the legacy booting with GRUB as main bootloader

It may be that the battery is just failing.  There is a lot more to battery health than how much charge the cells can take,  If yours is the original battery for the machine, it has been used for a normal life.  The service manual for your machine https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/0a60739_04.pdf

shows the procedure for checking the battery with a meter on page 34, but there are orter types of failure that won't show up.

my BIOS date/time gets reset every time i remove the battery from my x220 (but if I keep the AC power plugged, it's fine). I'm thinking about replacing it myself, and wondering if anyone knows how I can access the cmos battery on the x220? Any pictures/diagrams etc. will be helpful! Thanks.

Answer:thinkpad x220 cmos battery location

I strongly suggest you contact the support and let them replace it for you. There are several different types of battery, all looks the same, with different pin-out, different voltage, and different characteristics. But if you insist, please refer to the Hardware Maintenance Manual for X220 here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_SE/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-77125

I am considering purchasing the ThinkPad Battery 19+.  However, I'm concerned it will increase the incline of  X220T keyboard when resting on desk.  The Ultrabase elevates the battery side of the X220T so much that is not very usable/comfortable when writting with the stylus in portrait/tablet mode.  It seems to be designed exclusively with keyboard users in mind, who may prefer the keyboard incline. I would like to avoid purchasing another accessory with the same design deficiency. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with the 19+ Battery to share? Thank you.

Answer:Ergonomics of ThinkPad Battery 19+ with X220+ in Portrait mode

Hey, I bought the 19+ battery awhile ago, and I have to say I regret it so much. 100+ dollars to add like 6 hours of battery, and it made my tablet bulkier when thinkpads are suppose to be built for mobility. I barely use it now.  The incline thing is not an issue. I don't think it even adds anymore incline. But, my recommendation is don't buy it. If you carry around your laptop a lot, it's going to be a pain.

The ThinkPad Battery 19+ (6 Cell Slice - X220, X220T) I've checked the lenovo website. Is it not available? When I add it to the shopping cart, it is crossed out, and labelled "Item Expired". Is it discontinued, or out of stock, or in short supply? And at 230$, it's a bit expensive.

I have a Tablet x61 with a primary battery that works fine and a second battery that attaches at the bottom.   The Power Management recognizes both batteries, however the secondary battery does not charge when I plug in the AC adapter to the side of the X61.  It appeared to have a partial charge when first plugged in after purchase.   The primary battery charges fine.   I've never been able to charge the secondary battery.  Both are less than a month old.   Am I missing something on setup or how to charge the battery.   I presumed that plugging in the X61 to the AC would charge both batteries at the same time. As an update to this post, when I remove the primary battery then the secondary battery charges fine.   I have to physically remove the primary battery in order to charge the secondary battery on my X61 Windows XP tablet.  When the primary battery is attached, only the primary battery charges.  Secondary Battery Model: 40Y7005Description:  X61 Extended Life BatteryO/S:  XP SP2Thinkpad Model:  X61 Tablet 7762-B6U Message Edited by ctoys on 06-25-2008 01:48 PM

So I have a resolution to the problem after switching batteries and discovering it was not related to the hardware (secondary battery.)     The fix to charge a secondary battery sitting at 0% is to remove the primary battery leaving only the secondary battery to be charged.    Once the secondary battery has fully charged, it will recharge as needed even with the primary battery attached.    In other words, once charged by itself the problem went away.

My partner and I both picked up these tablets a couple weeks ago and are both experiencing this same problem quite often. Other than this problem the tablet itself has performed pretty well.Problem: While on battery the system will become unresponsive at random times, up to once or twice an hour. There is no bluescreen and the mouse cursor will still follow the pen (though the cursor is an hourglass equivalent) but the system is hung and never becomes responsive. The system doesn't respond to key presses or clicks from either the keyboard or the tablet buttons. "Crtl+Alt+Delete" via either the keyboard or the tablet hardware button do nothing in this situation. A hard boot is necessary to recover. This problem happens nearly once or twice a day, depending on how much time I spend on battery power. It happens to both my partners machine and mine with the exact same symptoms. All BIOS and driver updates have been applied via the ThinkVantage System Update process. We are still using the factory image (Vista) with only typical office applications running (mostly Office 2007.) The hang happens most often for me in (but not limited to) OneNote 2007 but I do tend to happen be using that most often while on battery.Any tips, support, etc. would be great. Thanks.

Answer:ThinkPad X61 Tablet 7764CTO - System becomes unresponsive intermittently while on battery

i experience the same problem with my laptop as well.. what is the configuration of your laptop? the ram, etc... for my laptop, the system update by lenovo does not install some drivers, so instead it is a good idea to do manual download of the latest drivers (e.g. intel turbo memory <<if you have this option>>)...the hang up (freeze) might be due to the fact that your CPU is processing at a high rate constantly and may lead to the hard drive hanging up.

I have a 600E which on starting up Windows XP "bluescreens" displaying in part: your computer (BIOS) has reported that a component in your system is faulty and has prevented windows from operating. You can determine which component is faulty by running the diagnostic disk or tool that came with your computer. I tried to install a new BIOS but because the battery is old and does not holda charge, the BIOS install will not continue. Is there a dignostic utility which I can use to identifiy and resolve this? As a remedy, I tried to re-install Windows XP, but, got the same "bluescreen" error again.A previous display indicated a problem with the video driver.

Answer:Thinkpad 600E "bluescreens" on startup indicating ...

An updated BIOS won't solve your hardware problem. The diagnostic tool referred to on the BIOS message is built into the BIOS you currently have.  Turn off your computer, press & hold the F1 key, and turn your computer back on.  Keep F1 down until the Easy Setup screen appears.  At the right is the test  (diagnostics) icon.  Click on it and on the next screen, pick something to test, such as display.  Click on the icons rather than the name of the icon.  This doesn't solve your problem, only pinpoints it.  You can update your BIOS without a good battery.  Google "Thinkpad 600e bios update without battery".

Hi, I have here a X220 Tablet that seem to have a FAN problem.Often in the last days my CPU temperature is often over 90 ░CAnd the fan has problem to reduce the temperature.I have also situation that the CPU is going too hot and the tablet switch off! The fan speed is 3500-3800 RPMs. Can someone helps me with this issue?

Answer:X220 Tablet FAN Problem - temperature over 90 ┬░C - tablet switch off :(

Hi giciorek,

I understand that your fan/temperature problems can be frustrating.  I would try updating your BIOS and also updating Power Manager.  (Some on the forum have tried downloading ThinkPad Fan Control, but that is not an official Lenovo solution.)

Download Power Manager here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014924

Download BIOS Update here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS018805

In Power Manager, click Advanced at top right, you can Set Optimize Fan Control to Balance All Parameters under Battery Settings.  Set it to Reduce Noise Dynamically under AC.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi all,    I have a really annoying problem...my x220 tablet disconnects from the internet whenever I enter tablet mode. The internet can be working perfectly fine while in non tablet mode but as soon as I switch to tablet mode, my internet disconnects. And if I switch back to non tablet mode from tablet mode, my internet returns almost instantaneously. I can load a page in non tablet mode with no problems, switch to tablet mode and the page stops loading. If I return back to non tablet mode the page resumes loading without so much as a pause or a hiccup. Also, when I switch the computer to tablet mode, wifi networks disappear off of the "available networks" list that were there before the switch.     I've tried everything, from updating network device drivers, reinstalling network device drivers, running diagnostics, reformatting my computer, uninstalling Norton Antivirus, system restoring to days before the last known working date in normal mode and safe mode, and contacting customer support (chat and call, managed to get a hold of a rep) but none of them have worked.    I also used to have a networking log before I reformatted/system reset to factory settings and there were a ton of errors with words like avsc manager failed to "something" ... I'll reinstall the thinkpad network managing program to create another log. Can someone please help me? My last resort is calling lenovo support again to have tech support come to hel... Read more

I have a brand new E220s, and I am not able to understand how to figure out if the battery is fully charged when the system is off (i.e. the laptop is not started but it is connected to power to be recharged). The user guide says that the light right next to the power inlet on the left side of the laptop will be on when the laptop is connected to power, and it will be green when the battery is charged. HOWEVER, on my laptop this light is green as soon as I plug the laptop into power. So, since it is always green, how am I supposed to figure out when the battery is fully charged? Or, is it possible that this light is always green when it is on (i.e. when the laptop is connected to power) which would be really stupid as my 2-year old vaio even show that the battery is fully charged by turning off the battery indicator light completely?G

I'm not sure what it's like for the E220s, but on the W520, the light turns off when the laptop finishes charging. The light should also blink at certain intervals when charging to indicate the amount of charge.

The learning curve on this machine is steep if you want to take advantage of all the input options but I've put the time in and I'm starting to love it. There is one thing I wish Lenovo would address though. I see plenty of ThinkPad users with this problem going back to at least 2008, and no solutions forthcoming. The manual states: "On the display bezel near the screen is a row of buttons with which you can control your computer in the tablet mode, without the use of the keyboard."By default the buttons are set to turn your computer off, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, or rotate the screen 90 degrees. The manual goes on to describe how you can customize these buttons via the Tablet Shorcut Menu, which is accessed via Start > Programs > Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools > Tablet Utility. If you open this program you get a dialog box titled "Auto Screen Rotation Settings." This dialog controls what orientation the screen should switch to when you convert into tablet. So it really doesn't have anything to do with the buttons. The only dialog that allows any assignment of the tablet buttons is Windows Control Panel > Tablet PC Settings. Here the Buttons tab is supposed to list the actual buttons on the front panel and let you assign them, but the only one shown is the Screen Rotation button. This works fine, you can set the button's function for a single press and a long press. (Too bad it's not possible to use Shift by itself, but that is as-designed by MS.)It should go without sayi... Hello,The laptop in question will not charge with the above mentioned dock when it previously did. If you shut down the mahcine and turn it back on when docked it works, but after this point if undocked and docked again it seems to lose it's ability to charge via the dock giving the "plugged in but not charging" message on the power system icon from the taskbar. As it stands the laptop can be charged by the AC port on the back and as mentioned when given a power cycle on the dock. The above issue happens on several docks with different power supplies. The laptop is no longer in warranty and it is possible to get this sent back and repaired (paying for the service) if that is an option. This is greatly inconvenient for the user affected and is causing disruption daily.

hi guys i really want to try a windows 8 tablet and i plan to buy it either by the end of this month or by next January. I am confused on what to pick though
First of all, the reason why I want a windows 8 tablet IS because i like the interface. but more importantly, i need metatrader and cTrader in legacy app as im a full time forex trader. I have metatrader in my iphone but you cant seriously compare that with the windows version (no tabbing, no lines drawing, no fibonacci, etc.). cTrader doesnt even exist there.
im looking to replace my macbook pro (which btw i also installed windows 8 on it through parallels virtual desktop) with a windows 8 tablet to support my trading while im outside
So basically I dont need a super i7 tablet or something. However, im curious to know how windows 8 atom tablets perform. I have seen enough reviews and some people says atom tablets perform badly in legacy apps. Question is, how bad is that bad? Does it lag so bad even though i dont need to run heavy apps like adobe? I only need to run these trading apps which btw are very light. You can compare them with MS paint i believe, just with constant connection.
would it do well in atom tablets? I dont want lags when i switch from win8 native apps to metatrader and cTrader.
next question - how does windows 8 tablet on-screen keyboard work with legacy apps? Would i have special gesture to show up the on-screen keyboard or it automatically appears when i touch the screen? I personally dont believe ... Read more

Hi I've looked at every category in the drivers matrix and absolutely cannot find the drivers that control the Tablet buttons on my tablet screen,  Can anyone point me to a link???  I found another thread on this forum that talks about a similar issue and someone posted a link to beta drivers, but the link doesn't go beyond the main Support home page at Lenovo.  Thanks, -G

Hey there Cr0sschex77,

To get some clarification to better direct you, what operating system are you currently using? Additionally are you referring to physical buttons or "buttons" on the touchscreen once at the desktop? Thanks Cr0sschex77!

I have got it to do this twice so far, so looks like a problem.  My wife always puts her X220 to sleep versus shutdown.  Sleep still uses some power apparently which is fine.  It looks like it is draining only the primary battery even though the slice battery is connected. The issue is that with the primary battery drained and the slice battery connected, the TP will not power up.  Plug the power adapter into the slice battery and still no power up.  The slice battery charged to 100% with it pluged in, but the primary battery would not charge.  Plug the power adapter into the X220 directly and let it charge for a moment, then everything works as it should even if you then move the power adapter back to the slice battery. So if the primary battery is dead, the slice battery and charging the primary battery through it seems to stop working under this scenario. Obviously not a huge deal since we now know what causes this, but maybe someone wants to fix some day. I am using BIOS 1.16 and have been for a while.

Answer:X220 Will Not Charge When Primary Battery is Dead with Slice Battery Installed

hey DevItHere, have you tried updating your bios and at the same time uninstalling the power manager for your X220 and reinstalling it ?if not, please do so

Question: x220 tablet DOA.

So. I ended up, after about a month and a half of lurking on forums and reading reviews, purchasing an X220t with most of the bells and whistles, along with an extended next day onsite warrranty, extra pen, etc. I track it all the way from China on the UPS site every three hours. It has been an unhealthy obsession. And it arrived in the mail. Dead. Won't work. Won't boot. DOA (mostly. several indicator lights flash a bit, but I don't hear a HD, fans spinning, or screen turning on.)  I've talked with tech support (who did what they could [Nice people!]) but they were unable to get any immediate help or provide any advice beyond 'we'll call you'.Also, they couldn't find verification that I had a warranty for awhile. My concern is that this is for college, and I'll be going to school on the other end of the country (Colorado School of Mines!). And I'll be leaving shortly, and work has left me short on time, etc. So, how common is this? Should I try to get my money back and just buy a Fujitsu tablet, or something else from a retailer? There is always bragging about thinkpads being so tough, and mine is dead after a ride through UPS via Worldport. ( I know... could be any number of components that were dead to begin with, etc.) Are they just crap? I'm trying to keep it cool, but I just spent a whole lot of money, including on a warranty which is generally just gravy for most companies, and I've recieved a very pretty lump of plastic (again, I'm not an ent... Answer:x220 tablet DOA.

Sideburns, welcome to the forum,

I'm sorry to read about your experience, something like this must be a huge disappointment after having waited eagerly for the arrival of your new ThinkPad.

So far you seem to have handled the situation correctly and would ask you to take a look at this post in our FAQs; Mark's Advice About DOA systems.

I personally feel that in your situation, due to the time limitations you mention, the quickest route for you to persue would be with support and having the system repaired. Yes you have stong arguments to ask for a refund or an exchange system, but these could potentially take longer to realise than having the system repaired.

As to your question to how common this is; in my experience it's not at all common. I personally have been selling Think products for over 11 years and can count on one hand the number of systems I have seen which were literally DOA.

Question: Tablet X220

Hi, Looking to verify that the tablet X220 can run dual monitors using the Thinkpad Ultrabase Series 3 Dock.  Would like to use two external monitors, one has a vgs connection and the other has DVI.  Could one monitor use the VGA connection and for the DVI monitor, can an adapter be used to connect to the display port? Thanks,Aaron

Solved!

Answer:Tablet X220

When you are docked on the Ultrabase Series 3, the dock's displayport and vga can both be active. Yes you can use the displayport to dvi converter to connect to your second monitor.

[$0.00]
12.5" HD Multi WW 3x3 No Camera
Selecting this option may delay your shipment more than 4 weeks. Why even release a model when both screen options are delayed more than four weeks? It's a phantom launch. No real product is available. I first checked this an hour or two after "launch" so it's always been like this. This is rediculous and is just a cash grab with the idea "see! it's available, please don't give your money to another company". Don't release products you can't ship. Don't release products before every major option is available, i.e., Gorilla Glass, i5, i7 processors...

Answer:The x220 Tablet is not available

It's interesting that apparently the Canadian site actually tells you in advance that there will be a 4+ week delay. On the US site, none of the options have notices saying they may cause delays. The order says "ships in 8-12 business days" all the way up until you check out, at which point it changes to "estimated ship date" in 5+ weeks (5/27/11).

After a couple years of use, my X220's battery clips/locks have failed. Both clips/locks (left and right) are in the locked position, but the battery slips right off if pulled away. I have reviewed this thread: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-replacing-battery-clips/td-p/891177 Will replacing the battery clips using the materials in the parts kit referenced in the above thread solve my problem? Better question: can this be repaired by a service center? My X220 is not warrantied-- how much would something like this cost, approximately? I do use my laptop on the go all the time, so the battery has to be secure.

Answer:x220 battery clips/locks broken, battery slips out

take some pictures of the battery and the battery bay area. If it is the battery, then it is cheap. If it is the laptop's battery bay clip on the chassis, then it would require a new bottom case and that would cost around 300 dollars at least including labour for an out of warranty repair. You can do it yourself, by disassembling the system and replacing the base. A new base should cost around 80 to 100 dollars from IBM parts.

I just purchased X220 Tablet. While purchasing I was made to understand that the system comes with Mobile Broadband Ready. However I am unable to use  my SIM card. I have inserted the SIM in the slot underneath the Battery, as was mentioned in the manual. But it does not work, no internet connection and in Access Connection the Mobile Broadband button is greyed. Can some one explain reason? I am able to use the sim with the pocketwifi, the tablet is able to detect through wifi but I wanted my 3G to be inthe laptop so taht I don;t have to use pocketwifi or USB dongle.

Hello!  I have an X220 tablet with a stylus that, whenever near the screen, begins writing or selecting. Depending on the program I have open of course. The touch features work fine, and to the best of my knowledge all my drivers are up to date. At this point I think I need to simply replace the pen, but before I spend the money on that, i would like to see if any of you know how to fix this without a new pen.  Thank you for your time,BriceJ

Is there a free way to downgrade from Windows 7 to the XP Tablet OS? Our customer has applications that will not run on Win 7.

Answer:X220 downgrade to XP Tablet OS

Hi and welcome to the forum Tom1956!

There is (or was perhaps) an option from lenovo, however it was never free. The following support doc states the downgrade program ended in July, regardless I'd suggest to give them a call and ask:- http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=VSTA-DWNGRD

Hope this helps.

I tried using the registry hack in Windows 8 to stop my battery charging higher than 95%, and was sucesful. however this has also had the effect of meaning that when I plug the charger in when the laptop is on, it says "plugged in, not charging". If I turn the laptop off, or put it into Standby, then plug the charger in, it starts charging fine and continues to do so after turning it back on. I have tried re-installing Windows 8.1 (and not installed any of the power management drivers) incase it was a driver problem, however this has not fixed it. If there is some way to completly reset the battery controller (i'm not sure if the chip that does this is in the battery of laptop) then I would be very glad to know.

Hi everyone I have had a Lenovo X220 tablet for a while now. I bought it on eBay. I can't send it to lenovo to fix, of course. My config (currrent):Win 8.1 pro (legal)Sandisk 128gb SSDLenovo 2x4 gb ram My problem is the following: as some in this forum experienced too, it just reboots randomly for no reason. It goes "clic", black screen and back to bios then OS.The behavior is the exact same as if you kept the power button pressed until it reboots. What I've been testing so far:- Switching OS (I've tested win7, win8, ubuntu, debian, elementaryos, archlinux)- Switching HDD (one SSD, one HDD)- Switching ram (removed one, removed the other, switched positions)- Flashing the bios, upgrading, downgrading it)- Watching the CPU, fan, temp: all normal. For some reason the best experience was with Windows 8.What could it be? I used lenovo diagnostics tools downloaded from their official site, but the only one that works is memorytest (which proved to be ok) I don't want another computer, I love that one and I don't want to change. Some people mention driver issues (graphics card, power management, stylus)... Could you please, please, help me? I don't know what to do anymore. And I don't have the money to get another computer right now. I am a teacher and I draw comics as a hobby and I need my lenovo to ink and color my work.  I'm fairly aware as to informatics, I know how to create live usbs, I know how to uninstall / reinstall drivers, I know how to use m... Answer:PLEASE HELP - Should I buy Tablet or Standard X220?

tablet allows you to directly write on the screen or use your finger as an input device (if you select the multitouch option), so if you have need for such feature, then the tablet obviously will the best choice. If you don't use the handwriting or touch screen option, then the normal x220 laptop is better, as it is slightly lighter than the tablet model and also slightly more rugged due to the different hinge design.

The truth is I don't know whether I should get a X220 tablet or standard X220.  I just think the tablet thing could be fun when reading, sorting and editing photos, etc., and I'd still have a X220 if it turns out to be useless.  Is this a correct assumtion? =)I've seen X220 tables come with an UltraBase and a DVD-RW drive.  I'd like a setup where I have some sort of docking station at my desktop were I can attach to a larger (DisplayPort) monitor, a keyboard, scanner, etc, and quickly snap my pc out for mobile work, preferably with the option of having a DVD-drive attached.  Would a X220 tablet with the UltraBase fit in the Dock or should the UltraBase be removed first?  Can the UltraBase be seen as a portable clip-on DVD-drive or should it be regarded as an alternative to a Dock?  Or put in a use-case:  I have my X200 tablet with the UltraBase and drive.  Can I quickly click this in the Dock and continue (say) watching DVD on my monitor?  Or do I have to move all cables from the Dock to the UltraBase?  Same for standard X220?What's the max output when connected to a UltraBase and/or Dock?  Or put in a different way: Can the X220 tablet fully use a 1920x1200 monitor?  What's the max resolution?  Same for standard X220?Where can I find jucy specs like these?  The standard white paper only shows very brief defails and only for the laptop's own screen.I seems like there are two versions of the X220 tablet disp... Answer:Questions regarding X220 tablet before I buy one

1. That is "correct" but it would also be "expensive." The tablet is several hundred dollars more expensive for a feature you may never use.2. The UltraBase IS a dock. And for the tablet, it is the ONLY dock. It is technically portable but I wouldn't recommend carrying it around. As far as I know, the X220 without tablet has other options, but you wouldn't be able to use an UltraBase and a dock at the same time.3. The tablet can handle 1920x1200 and higher, but I haven't personally tested beyond 1920x1080 (my monitor is an HDTV which only goes up to 1080p). 5. The Gorilla glass is only on the outdoor model. It does not support two finger touch. Both displays have stylus input. 7. Ignoring the weight difference, the experience should be identical, although I haven't tested this myself. I would recommend against getting a tablet. I and many others are having great issue with the accuracy of the stylus input.

Hi guys, New x220 tablet. Has been working fine, left it for the weekend and coming back to it this morning it will not bootup. Is built with Windows 7 and I had the full functionality of the biometrics running and sync'd with drivelock/bios password. On trying to boot this morning using the power button, I press it once, the button lights green (around edge), for a second, then disappears, the biometric light goes green for a second then disappears.  Nothing else happens from there. Have tried the usual - battery replaced, booting on just power etc but same happens.  I cannot hear or feel the hdd spinning (i have an identical model also which is working fine). Have searched through the forums and inet but cannot find any issues relating to the light sequence etc (wondering if it had a specific sequence to tell me what the errors are).... Suspect HDD has gone as it is just not spinning, but cannot be sure as I cannot get to BIOS or anything else..... Any ideas?

Answer:x220 Tablet will not bootup

Edited to add: I swapped hdd out and put it in identical tablet - HDD seems to work fine. Popped it back into the offending tablet, tried to switch power on and the green light around power button alternates with biometric light (on and off) for around 30 seconds and ends up with biometric light green and power light off.... Also swapped out memory - still nothing - no access to BIOS etc - no warning beeps...

I'm configuring an order for a maxed x220 tablet. I really want a large (512gb or higher SSD). Since that's not a factory option I guess I'll have to go aftermarket, open the case and do a home upgrade. I've done plenty of drive upgrades before but not an SSD.My review of message board makes it seem like there can be fit problems with some SSDs in the x220, and that with SSDs in general you should do a clean install and not a full clone (with OS).  That always raises issues with drivers and QA'ing the install to make sure you got it all back to factory fresh. I've read the posts about using a smaller SSD in the extra slot as a boot drive and keeping files on HDD, but I would really like to have everything on the faster media. So my question is, are there any x220 tablet owners out there that have self-installed large SSDs. Any tips, warnings or reassurances? Thx

Answer:x220 tablet and large SSD

HI,  I installed Intel 320 SSD (160 Gb) and used Acronis to clone the previous drive. It worked well. What may be of greater interest to you, is that I had to remove a black spacer attached to the SSD to make it 7mm from 9.5mm.  It can be easily done with Intel SSDs (except 510, I think), but you will have to order shorter screws online. Just search Google or this forum for screws for Intel SSD. Good luck!

So I have had my tablet now for about 3 weeks or so and since the past week or week and a half I've noticed that the computer takes a long time to start up.  From when I turn the power on to when I get the Lenovo Thinkpad display is within a few seconds which is the norm.  However it takes quite a while, about 30 to 45 seconds for the log on screen to show up and then about the same for everything to be fully loaded and ready to go.  I will also check the log on times again and update the next time I boot up. Intel i7-2620320 GB hard drive8GB ram Any info is helpful and thanks in advance.

ok here are the official times for startup. power on to thinkpad logo 8-10 secstarting windows at the 20 sec markwindows log on page at 1min 20 sec markall icons loaded and ready to go at 3 min 20 sec mark Everything else about the computer is great and  once its on its runs super fast and I don't have any problems other than having to manually downloading the ultranav driver because it mysteriously went away.  I'm just a little frustrated with the abnormally long start up time.

I am looking into docking solutions for the X220T.  I currently use the ThinkPad X220 Tablet with Windows 7 64-bit, but it is possible I may run Ubuntu on a partition in the future.  Is it possible to dual monitor with X220T on Windows 7 and/or Ubuntu using the ThinkPad Port Replicator Series 3 or the ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3?  Which would provide more functionality in this regard? I am new to this forum, but thank you in advance for any advice. It is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Dock/Port for X220 Tablet

Hello filled_empty,
If you wanted to go with the Port replicator you would need dongles, and or a type of converter to the type of wire you need.
This would probably be the cheaper way to go if you were looking to save money.

The UltraBase or Dock will usually have the ports you need already on it. This includes but is not limited to VGA, DVI connectors, usb, etc. This is a little higher in price but Personally I think the dock is the way to go on this.  No converters or dongles needed.  The Dock is, in my opinion, the way to get more functionality with adding multiple monitors.

You also asked about the dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Yes, this is possible with your Laptop.

I hope this helps,

Alex
