Preferred Solution: Hard drive Short DST Failed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

Answer:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If... Answer:Hard Drive DST short failed

Kyle, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You can test it further using the SMART test from the BIOS.  When you replace it you should buy one the same size or larger.  If you didn't backup your personal data, you will not be able to retreive it.  You should begin doing this immediately after you replace the drive. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Laptop will start but will not get as far as the HP logo.Cannot open in safe mode.Ran a system test which gave the following negative result: Hard Drive Shot DST Check: FailedFailure ID : 9GFT7T-82G89A-MFPX61-60T203Background: Laptop is under a year in my possession bought new and unused, within the last week it has shown some signs of slowing down, (firefox not responding just when a new tab is opened).Last night, went to open league of legends, adobe air could not locate files (which is odd as I was on the game 2 hours earlier).Woke up today, turned on the laptop and was greeted by nothing, not even a system logo, now whenever I start it up I just get a black screen.Able to enter bios.

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST : FAILED

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replac... Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

Answer:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

My laptop had been working completely fine until today where I had come home and the start up was taking ages. It was stuck on the HP logo for a while and then was followed by a message stating that the PC has a problem and it was "Preparing Automatic Repair".The screen is now blank and does not do anything. I restarted and the same issue occurred. My laptop is OUT OF WARRANTY - bought in 2014 and had no issues with the laptop up until now. The support team on Twitter ran through tests with me on this issue and advised that the Hard Drive needs to be replaced due to the Hard Drive Short DAT Check Failure - just now wondering whether any of the data can be recovered and how to go about it? Any help will be appreciated!!!

Answer:HARD DRIVE SHORT DST CHECK FAILED

Probably. You have to stop trying to boot the laptop and physically remove the hard drive.  Here's the Service Manual: Manual See p. 43 and 49 for "how to". This is not real easy to do. Post back if you need more help and we can likely find a video.  It will be very similar to this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04324972 Once you get the hard drive out you need a usb to SATA adapter like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ugreen-Converter-Adapter-Cable-Power/dp/B00MYU0E0K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=148...  Hook this to the hard drive and then attach the usb to another computer and it is likely possible to retrieve data. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Answer:Hard drive short DST check: failed

Hi, Sadly to say, the HDD on your machine failed. The following link shows its specs:          http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03663774 You can replace larger (capatity) and faster HDD. Any standard 2.5" SATA HDD on the market today can do the job. You need Recovery media to rebuild your machine. Did you create one ? Otherwise, please try:              http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.  See p. 49 of the Manual: Manual If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hi I been using my laptop as usual today and all of a sudden a notification popped up saying hard drive failure imminent. I restarted the laptop, pressed f2 and ran a system test. Everything in the test passes expect from the Hard drive short dst check, which failed.Failure ID: 0SG2J1-7K289U-XD7WLJ-60VW03I'm not sure why this has occurred. I regular run virus scans and defrag the hard drive. The hard drive is 1TB and around 100GB is used. The laptop is only 2 years old and ran out of warranty around April/May (typical). I don't have any recovery disc or back ups, is the laptop now unusable? I try to boot up but the laptop either freezes on login or on desktop. I have all my uni work, including my dissertation report on there, please help.ThanksDale

Product Name: hp15-r181nr My HP 15 laptop was running slow and I couldn't get past the Welcome Screen.  I ran a diagnostics test and received the Hard Drive Short DST Check : Failed message.  My laptop is no longer under warranty.  What are my options?

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check:Failed

The disk-drive either has failed, or it is showing that it is about to fail. Given that it is out-of-warranty, you need to purchase a replacement disk-drive, and then reinstall Windows. I looked at: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/7234951/model/7450458 There is no option to place an order with HP to get a "System Recovery Set".This is either one USB memory-stick, or several DVD disks, that you can use to reinstall Windows. However, if your computer was running Windows 10, you have a "digital entitlement" to reinstall Windows 10.On another computer, see: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10You can download Windows 10, and install it on the new disk-drive.If asked to enter a 25-character product-key, click "I do not have one", to activate your entitlement. Although Windows does not boot from the old disk-drive, it may still "barely-work" -- just long-enough to attach it as a "slave" disk-drive, and to copy all your files/bookmarks/music/pictures from it.

This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

I have a HP Beats Special Edition 15 p030nr laptop which I have been experiencing issues with for the last two weeks. It began as the computer simply freezing up, not able to load anything once it booted up and I logged in, and this resulted in having to gard boot the computer to shut it down. I completed a system restore of the computer, and this appeared to resolve the issue for a few days. Now, the computer heats up really fast and the fan becomes really loud, then the computer completely restarts itself over and over. It fully loads to the account, I log in and within 2-5 minutes the computer restarts itself. There is nothing that it set to load upon start up of the PC. The only thing other than school documents from professors and Microsoft Office 360 directly from Microsoft have been downloaded. The computer has hardly anything on it as I only use it for school.I completed a system check scan which resulted in Failure ID: GU5B63-7NJ8K8-MFPWLJ-60XQ03 and Product ID: G6R14UA#ABA and the words Hard Drive Short DST Check failed, and Hard Drive 1. I would appreciate any help with determining what this error code means so that I can go ahead and attempt to fix my laptop. It would crap out the week before exams start...thankfully I do have a back up of all important files from the computer.

So my laptop HP 14-ac136tu has been performing very slow for the last few months and so I decided to reset it but failed. When I turned it on again, it shows the hp logo then shows a black screen without cursor. I tried pressing the F2 before the logo starts and it directed me to a diagnostoc. When I checked, the Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed.

Now, the thing is I don't have a recovery disc and when I looked it up on hp they don't have any available for my laptop model. When I also tried to have the blue screen thing which has like recover from past something, it wasn't successful since a file wasn't found and so I got stuck with having a black screen.

Can you help me please?

tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally. I would be watching a video, click to a different tab, stuff like that, and everything would become unresponsive and freeze (didn't just happen to my browser, would happen even with my search bar). Restarting and giving it a moment would fix this problem, but it got to the point it happened 20 or 30 minutes after start up. I decided to do a reset, chose to not save my files (didn't do a 100% wipe though) because there's nothing critically important, and I thought it could be a virus. Did the wipe, got an error a good bit in that the wipe couldn't be done (I do not remember the exact wording). Tried again, same thing. It directed me to some options, chose the launch windows 10 normally one, just to see if I was still having problems. Did this, and what would happen is computer would boot up, HP logo, cycle back to computer boot up, HP logo, it was in a loop. Waited a good hour and a half to two hours, would not stop. Turned computer off manually and on a few times, same problem. Turned computer off then on, f2, system quick test, and I got the error in the title FAILURE ID: QBS97X-82L863-XD7WMA-60WD03PRODUCT ID: P1A95UA#ABA

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

Bought this Pavilion 17t in December of 2014.  Upgraded to Windows 10 about 6 months ago.  Just last week the laptop got stuck in an automatic repair loop. I tried a hard reboot and that didn't work.  I ran the diagnostics test and got a Hard Drive Short DST check Failed.  Failure ID Q4JF9G-7G189F-MFPV7A-60SU03  Product ID J7B57AV.   Does this mean my hard drive is failing after such a short time?  Is there any solution other than an expensive repair?

Answer:HP Pavilion 17t Hard Drive Short DST failed

Yes unfortunately it means the hard drive must be replaced. If you are willing to do it yourself, hard drives are probably not as expensive as you fear. We would need your precise model number to provide the correct manual and instructions and likely a video. Since you had Windows 10 installed and activated you can use media downloaded for free direct from Microsoft.

The hard drive will need to be replaced. Are you under warranty? Assuming not, here is the Service Manual: Manual See page 59 of the Manual. Replacement requires removing quite a few screws, but is otherwise pretty straightforward. Your model has a 1TB 5400 rpm SATA drive: Your specs This is a chance to install something a bit faster: a 7200 rpm mechanical, hybrid or solid state drive in increasing order of speed and cost.  This would be an exact replacement for you: https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Mobile-Hard-Disk-Drive/dp/B00C9TEBJQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480851150&s... But, as I said there are better options. If you need help with data and software migration/reinstallation let us know. Windows 10 is easy to reinstall since you can just download it from Microsoft. Do you have a backup of your data?  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hello there! My computer recently started rebooting (BSOD) nonstop after turning it on, and it won't even go into Safe Mode. After running a system quick check, I received a message stating Hard Drive Short DST: Failed. With this message, I assume I need to replace my hard drive. I'm not sure where the best place to look for a new laptop hard drive is and how to find one on the HP store. Recovering potentially lost data is also a concern. What's the best way to go about replacing the drive and attempting to recover what was on it?

Answer:HP envy dv6 Hard Drive Short DST: Failed

You can use any manufacturer's hard drive. HP uses Toshiba, Seagate, etc in their laptops-they do not make their own. Western Digital is a popular replacement. Best Buy, Staples even Wal Mart carries hard drives. Just be sure to get a 2.5 " hard drive for laptops not a 3.5" desktop hard drive.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8516564&CatId=1277 As to recovering files you may be able to do that by installing the old hard drive into a usb enclosure then plug it into usb port of a working machine. If the hard drive has any life left in it you should be able to browse it and copy files over to hard drive of host machne.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2781

No repairing of hard drives; they must be replaced.  See page 41 of the Service Manual here: Manual It can use any standard 2.5 inch wide 9.5 mm thick laptop hard drive and I recommend you at least get a 7200 rpm drive like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2W014M8024 Do you have recovery disks made? Hi, My laptop is stalling at the HP welcome screen with the spinning circle. Answer:Notebook Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

MickSull68 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that error message means that your hard drive has failed. It will need to be replaced.Once you have the replacement drive, you will need to use something known as HP Recovery Media to restore your PC to working condition. This is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks. You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded. (more on this below)While you are waiting for the HP media to arrive, you should work at retrieving any files and folders you want to save from this drive, as follows:1) Remove the hard drive from the PC2) Purchase a USB-to-Hard Driver adapter kit3) Download and install this utility on a working PC: http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_...4) Connect the old drive to the working PC5) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the old drive. If that tools does not find what you need, an alternative is Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuvaAnd, if that does not work well, the best tool out there is this one, but only the trial version is free: http://www.file-recovery.com/-------- Ordering Recovery Media ------------You can look online for Recovery Media starting w... First off I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC with Windows 8 and I used Internet Explorer 10.

Processor Name : AMD E-300APU with Radeon ™ HD Graphics.

A few days ago, my computer started getting slower & slower, not responding, freezing up and even going to a blue screen before coming back to the page I was at.

So I put it in Safe Mode with Networking and ran Malwarebytes full scan - nothing.

Then I hit F2 at reboot and ran some of the tests on there - Battery was Okay, memory was okay, but this one failed :

Hard Drive Short DST Check - Software Error

Failure ID : RSG080-6P579C-MFGJXG-60VS03
Product ID : D1E80UA#ABA

Does this mean I need to update with windows update, that there isn't enough memory or does it mean my Hard Drive needs to be replaced? This laptop is only 1-1 1/2 years old....

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed - Software Error?!

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

My computer is a Dell E1505 laptop. Running windows vista.

Answer:computer crashed. hard drive DST short test failed...please help

If the hard drive failed, look at getting a replacement hard drive.

You can remove the damaged hard drive and perhaps hook it up to another computer to see if you can grab files that you want to save.

What sort of disks came with the computer? Did you create any rescue disks? Do you have a recent image? If you have an image, what program did you use to create it?

Hi,  my laptop (HP Pavilion 15-e051ej / ID E0Z10EA#ABT)  froze and windows OS stoped reacting . I then tried rebooting it manually by using the switch off button. Then on restart, it shows for a second a blue screen error and goes to "preparing automatic repair" sign, then the writing disappears but nothing else happens. I followed the steps recommended in the HP troubleshooting section and ran a system quick test activated by pressing F2 on boot-up. The results are as follows: hard drive SMART check: passedhard drive short DST check: failedfailure ID: 94SF0C-78L8BE-MFPWXG-60WH03 I have no idea what the above code means but I would like to find out if it is fixable without losing the data stored on my laptop. or if there is a way to save at least only the data. Recently I fired up my laptop and left it downloading an update for Civ 6 via Steam whilst I took a nap. When I woke up I was confronted with a black screen with no curosr. I tried a few fixes posted online but following the advice from the I.T Crowd I tried turning it off and back on again. When I turned my laptop back on I recieved a blue "Unmountable Boot Volume" error screen and my laptop went into automatic repair. I had a screen with the HP logo and "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then it went to a black screen with no cursor. I left it on the black screen overnight but when I checked it the next morning it was still on the black screen. I turned the computer off. My next step was to create Windows 10 USB recovery disk using Rufus. I then turned on my laptop again, deactivated Secureboot and enabled legacy booting. When I saved and exited my laptop didn't reset so I reset it manually using the power button. When it came back on I selected the USB drive via Boot Options and then chose Windows 10 64 bit. It recieved a screen saying loading files. It then wen to a screen with the HP logo and the spinning loading thing HP has. The next screen was a black screen with no cursor. I left it for an hour just in case but nothing changed so I reset it again via the power button and tried loading all three of the safe modes to see if they worked but each time I recieved the HP loading screen then a black screen with no cursor. Finally I did a hardware check and ... Hello, my Lenovo Think Pad's Hard Drive failed both targeted read  test (error code WHD20-HJF) and the smart self test (error code WHD16-KPY). I admit that I'm an older user and I have no idea what this means and what is the possible fix for it.I am open to all suggestions; THANKS,Octavious ONeal

Answer:Hard Drive failed both postive read and smart short self test

Hi, Octavious

When the hard drive fails those tests, it's an indication that the drive is dying. It's recommended to back up any valuble data on the hard drive and then replace it soon. The drive may still work for a little while, but it will likely stop working sometime soon.

Hope it helps,
Adam

tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally.

Answer:Hard Drove Short DST Check: FAILED

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

HP 2000-453CA Notebook PC Product ID: A7T89UA#ABC Windows 8 64-Bit Failure ID: GLWG6K-00075P-MFKT01-60V403 My computer is 2 years old. Recently, it started acting up, its been getting really slow and the computer temperature went up really easily. One day when I turned on my computer, the screen went blank after the windows logo screen when you turn on the computer, and it stayed blank forever. The screen was still backlit and occasionaly I would see the mouse cursor. Once the recovery screen showed up when I turned it on, I tried every option that there was (except reset and refresh because it said it needed extra files and to insert a recovery disc) and it still doesn't work. Eventually I tried pressing ESC for the startup menu and used system diagnostics. I chose startup test and when it finished it said Hard Disk Short DST: Failed and Start-Up Test: Failed. Everything else passed. Please help... what can I do to fix this? Thanks in Advance!

Hi, As stated, I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased 1 year ago. Just 2 days ago, my warranty has ended. At the same point in time, I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend. When I got it back, it works just fine, but it had that malware in it that I want to remove. So, I fired up system restore and go on restoring. It finished doing so until  it restarts. When it restarts, I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours, to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media. All works well until I got stuck in the installation. I got stuck at 10% (When I searched on the internet why, the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on. I am able to open it up and take it off for a moment. But because I need to go to work, I decided against it. I turned the laptop off and set off. When I got back, I can't even let it proceed to the installation, saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot. Did that same thing several times and nothing happened. Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check. It passed the SMART test, but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST. It produced the error code: MFUC7T-7RG98K-CD7WMG-64DK03 Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall? Or is the HDD really is ruined? If this is the case, I'm probably just ... Read more

I haven't had any issues with my laptop, all of a sudden today I turn it on and get this black screen telling me it's repairing disk issues and could take over an hour. Six hours later it was doing the same thing so I ran diagnostics on it and got hard drive short DST check failure with failure ID: MC5XMV-74G8G1-MFKR6J-60X703. How can a laptop that's 2 years old, always protected by norton antivirus and never had any issues suddenly have a bad hard drive????

If you want a partition on that drive that keeps the transfer rate above ~100MB/sec, create only a 400GB partition (that's ~40% used, see your graph).

When running an HP PC hardware diagnositics test, the rests come out as follows: System  -  Failed  -  QCW448-7G989F-MFPV7A-60SG03  -  10/29/2016The System extensive test shows that it failed as the Hard Drive Short DST Check failed. I had the laptop for 2 years. Recently it started to work very slow. It would take a long time for it to connect to the Internet, browsing the Internet became slow as well. It would randomly close programmes and applications. It would randomly restart itself.Today I tried to turn it on, but it got as far as my lock screen and it froze. But before getting to the lock screen the screen was black for over 5 minutes.I went into PC Hardware Diagnostics and ran both of the test logs. It fails both of them and it did that the hard drive short dst failed and it gave me and ID number: 6BVP8X-7MK8HM-MDPWL1-60QH03.Could you please help me, as I really need it to start working.

Answer:Hard drive short dst failure

Short DST Failure means that your Hard Drive has failed. You would need to get it replaced by logging a ticket at HP.You can also take it to an authorised HP repair center or your PC reseller to get help.

I was running Win XP which finally failed and I was able to enter in safe mode (only, no networking) and ran all the tests I could think of. Hard drive is ok and so I attempted to repair WinXP from the installation CD. However, the PC failed to shut down and restart so I eventually force closed it. Now it won't even load past the initial black windows screen, don't even get the option of going into safe mode.

Is there any way I (or someone) could access the hard drive to retrieve the data? I guess I could reinstall the OS but don't want to do that yet as I'll definitely lose the data.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:Win XP failed, repair failed -- can I access hard drive?

Sure, there are many ways. Depending on what you want in the end decides how to proceed.

If you have a lot of space free on the drive, you could boot off a linux dvd and create a new partition. You'd have to shrink the existing, then make a new one. Then you could just copy over the data from the old one to the new one. Then reinstall windows onto the old partition, and copy your stuff back (then delete the partition and expand the remaining to fill the rest of the space).

You can also just boot off a linux disk and copy it to a thumb drive or whatever.

Or you could remove the hard drive and place it in another computer.

Also, I'm not convinced you lose the data if you install Windows again. I'm pretty sure you can install without formatting the drive. Your programs won't work, but it shouldn't overwrite any of your data. This is a non-ideal solution though.

Can anyone confirm what the following error message means OU6KMD-6R28JG-MFPX0J-60W303

Answer:Hard drive Short DST error message

Hi Zalan,This error means that your hard drive has failed or is failing. You will need to change your hard drive as soon as possible and try to backup all your personal data. You can do this by removing hard drive and attaching to another computer with usb hub and see if you can recover any data. You will need a new 2.5" drive for your laptop, you can choose brand and capacity you want. Probably cheaper in online stores. You could also opt or an SSD which will improve system performance. You will have to reinstall windows 10. You can download the media creation tool from Microsoft, run it and create a bootable usb drive with win 10 on it. It will be activated automatically when installed (if asked for product key just click on do not have one) as long as you install the same edition which was already on the PC. Let me know if you need any further help,David
