Preferred Solution: School laptop for 2017

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Source: School used student laptop webcams to spy on them at school and home

According to the filings in Blake J Robbins v Lower Merion School District (PA) et al, the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools' administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families. The issue came to light when the Robbins's child was disciplined for "improper behavior in his home" and the Vice Principal used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence. The suit is a class action, brought on behalf of all students issued with these machines.

If true, these allegations are about as creepy as they come. I don't know about you, but I often have the laptop in the room while I'm getting dressed, having private discussions with my family, and so on. The idea that a school district would not only spy on its students' clickstreams and emails (bad enough), but also use these machines as AV bugs is purely horrifying.

Oh boy....

Answer:School used student laptop webcams to spy on them at school and home

WOW...that's just....I don't know what to say..I hate public school systems anymore. Teachers and principals get a little ounce of power within the doors of the school and they think they are the leaders of everyone in the city :|

I would have my kids home schooled but that just shelters them from the real world..but if something like this happened I'd be the first one to pick up the pitch fork :|

Hi everyone, i have quite a few questions so i'll post separate threads rather than pollute one thread. I'm wanting to get something a lot better than windows defender. Comcast is my ISP so i can get NIS for free. As most of you are aware of Norton hasn't been doing a great job these days. There has been multiple vulnerabilities in its products that actually decreases the security of windows. Still NIS still does a pretty good job of scoring pretty well in the various test in terms of protection. I was thinking on going with either bitdefender or KIS but of course i would have to pay for those. If you were me would opt for NIS because its still pretty dang good and worlds better than bit defender or would you opt for one of the better products like KIS or bitdefender?

Answer:Kaspersky IS 2017 vs Norton IS 2017 vs Bitdefender IS 2017

bitdefender free+ CF and SAP i think will be good

Question: Laptop for school

Well I am mostly looking at a laptop for school, I still want it to be fast though, not one of those slow bulky laptops that take 5 mins for windows to load, and all laggy when trying to go through menus in windows. I dont really have laptop knowledge, just desktop :P I don't have a price range but I am leaning towards $500 and under.

Answer:Laptop for school

The same things that you use for desktop applies for laptop. For $500 and under you will not get what you are looking for. There wont be many laptops out there for less than that amount that can eun Vista fluently. Your best bet might be a Dell Vostro.

Want a cheap laptop with decent battery life for school. Computer science major, probably will just install ubuntu when I get it. So needs to be good enough for programming and surfing the web oh and maybe some warcraft 3 between classes. So suggestions on what to look for or even better links would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

Answer:Want new laptop for school

Don't know about the gaming; I'm not a gamer. Otherwise, this looks like a good deal:, with the rebate now in effect.

I have been looking around for a new workhorse laptop but so far I have had no luck.
Basically I'm looking for something cheap(the cheaper the better, $500 or less) for school work. It must have microsoft word, power point,etc.. and be able to connect to wireless internet.

if anyone can point me to such a thing I will appreciate it.

Answer:Laptop for school

You're prob going to have to get a used one. A new one with ms word + tax would be around 600-650 at the least.

So I got a small $600, but I have to get something for school. I just want to get the best thing for my money. I do play games like FO3 and stuff but I doubt I will be able to get anything to handle that with my budget lol but if there is something out there I want it. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Laptop for school

Add $100 to that budget and i can recommend a gaming laptop which will let you run all current games on medium/high settings.

I have a gateway laptop I use for school it turned off and won't turn back on. I put the battery in another computer and the other computer still powered on. I did the same with the charger. So its not a battery or charger problem. There is no virus or anything like that. When I plug it up the charging light flashes red and that's it I tried a hard reset and that doesn't seem to work with this model. No power light or anything. I really need to get thus thing back up and running so I can finish up my online exams. PLEASE HELP

I'm looking for a school laptop, and 3 entries are on my list:
Surface pro 3
Lenovo yoga 3 11
ThinkPad yoga
I'm just using it for homework, Office, Java, and 3d design. But the catch is that I have to keep it for 4 years. Any suggestions?

Answer:Which laptop for school?

Sophomore year I picked up a refurbished ThinkPad T400 (an older model) from Micro Center, so if you don't need high end horsepower, thinness and a price to match, those are worth a go. (repairable, tanky, won't play Crysis though) My friend has a Dell Latitude (my laptop and his were direct competitors) and that works for him.
If it were me though, out of those, I'd get a ThinkPad Yoga. If I were off to college and needed a laptop now, the ThinkPad Yoga is probably the one I'd take, if cost wasn't an objection.
My problem with the Surface Pro's is the zip repairability.
Although I'd definitely consider the Dell Venue 11 Pro (a midrange i5 model at least) + accessories. (easily replaceable battery, for a tablet, especially compared to the others.)

Hey there, i understand there are probably a million different variations of this question, but im looking for advice on a laptop to purchase. My budget will be around £700 or less.
This laptop will be used for school and later Uni, but i cant forsee needing long hours of bettery life, so that is not so much an issue. I want something good, reliable to get me through a 4 year course (5 year lifespan in reality). I am also a keen gamer, however i dont often play some of the more harcorde graphically intense games. I would like to be able to play the likes of World Of Warcraft and Diablo etc on maximum settings with reasonable fps. Other games such as simulators and what not i play occasionally also, so a dedicated graphics card is a must really.
I apologise for the speel of information, but i would like the most informed of advice, as this laptop will be part of my life for a good few years haha. I currently have 2 different laptops in mind. In order from first to second choice
Dell XPS 17 L702X: XPS L702x

Answer:school/recreation laptop

I think the i5 will last just as long as the i7, really not a lot in it, except that of course i5 is cheaper.
I have recently bought an i5 laptop from Novatech @ £660 with Win7, and No Bloatware! It runs FSX Deluxe at all Ultra-high Settings faultlessly.

My computer in school (desktop) has a Windows Experience Index of 3.3 but it seems to perform better than my 4.4 WEI laptop. Maybe WEI is not a reliable measure of how fast the computer is but just to give you an idea. I don't know the exact specs of my school pc but i think it has almost the same specs as my laptop in terms of ram and clock speed. Here are my laptop specs:

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 32-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Acer
System Model: TravelMate P243
BIOS: InsydeH2O Version 03.72.02V1.05
Processor: Intel® Pentium® CPU B970 @ 2.30GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 1878MB RAM
Page File: 3348MB used, 1230MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)

Anyway, my laptop freezes a lot of times, especially when I haven't turned it off for a long time. This just doesn't happen with my school pc even if it's on 24/7. I was the one who installed windows 7 on both computers so they have almost the same programs installed (except maybe Connectify app in my laptop).

Now i'm wondering if I can still make my laptop perform faster or should I just buy a new one? My CPU usage meter indicates 87% of my ram is used. this is usually the case when i'm working. Do you think this will get faster if I upgrade the ram? i ... Read more

Answer:My 3.3 WEI computer in school is better than my 4.4 WEI laptop. why?

Do you think this will get faster if I upgrade the ram?Hello and Welcome -Most updated Windows7 computers will run about 4G RAM, rather than your current installed 2G RAM, so it would not hurt to upgrade this -If These TravelMate P243 Specs are the same / similar to yours, it includes Memory "Base RAM size 4 GB" -Part of Acer's business lineup, the TravelMate P243 features an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, 8GB of RAM, an HD webcam, and a 14-inch 1366 x 768 display. Availability date: Aug. 14, 2012 Also This Review says "Basic RAM is 4G" - So I would look at 4Gig as a standard laptop freezes a lot of times, especially when I haven't turned it off for a long time. << I would turn the computer off at least at the end of the day and save your work Personally only, I turn my laptop off every day (night) as it may be 2 or 3 days between using it, and I like to start fresh each time - Your choice there -Desktops and laptops are a bit different with shutdown times etc, but I still believe in turning them off when totally finished, and it only takes about 1 or 2 minutes to restart them for each session - Try this for a while, and clean out unwanted programs on a regular basis also -Regards -

Last semester I hated my 4 year old laptop. I am getting a new one this semester
Consumer reports says get a Dell Laptop, I looked at 2 dells and I would want to combine them, but also I'm not sure if they are that great.
Choice A
Built in Blue Ray-(useless to me)
6GB memory
500GB harddrive
battery 3 hours
18.4inch monitor
Wireless networking
Reads/Writes DVD/CDs

Choice B
4 GB DDR3 Memory(the DDR3 I have no idea what the difference is from Choice A)
500GB HD
battery life 5.5hours
-slot loading disc drive
-wireless networking
-17.3 inch screen

I'd want"
5 hour battery life
I have no idea what "DDR3" Memory is? or if it's better than what the other computer has, "6GB memory"(what the display card says)
-Know clue what a slot loading disc drive is.

I want a read/write slot loading thing is, I'd easily get choice A but I dont need/want blue ray player? or does it matter?

Should I get the 3 year geek squad black tie protection for half the cost of the computer?

Answer:is this a good laptop for school ?

What's your budget for this? Do you have any special requirements, such as gaming?

Hi there, I recently purchased a X41 off-lease and its working well. However, I have a few questions that have not yet been answered by the support staff of lenovo/IBM (via phone) and would like to give this forum (filled with insightful, helpful individuals) a try. Questions: 1) What is the maximum size that the SD reader can support? (If it can support SDHC is 32GB Class 6 or higher possible? and If not by default, is there a service pack or driver that I can download and install to allow me to add on a fairly large SD Storage option. 2) Will switching to a 1.8" solid state 32GB hard drive void the warranty? 3) Is upgrading the internal wifi card to an N-compatible card be possible? Does lenovo or a 3rd party sell one? 4) Finally, will the full recovery media be able to be burned onto a bootable CD (because the Ultrabase only comes with a CD Burner) Thanks for all your help in advance, looking forward to some replies. =) -Jay

Answer:X41--> Old School Laptop, Hopefully New Questions.

1. Maximum size i am unsure (some have tried a 16 gig SDHC a while back and reports it to work, while others have difficulty to get a SDHC of 4 gig to work), but you would need this XP hot fix to get it working above 4 gig. 2. Swapping harddrive won't void warranty, as it is considered CRU unit. But the SSD is a SATA drive, i am not sure whether the X41 use a PATA or SATA interface. 3. I think there is good possibility of upgrading to N compatible wifi, but you need to source a Lenovo/IBM original part, otherwise it won't work. 4. Yes

you would either want the Asus or the Lenovo. i strongly advise against buying a dell computer. for college, highschool, work, the lenovo is your best bet. but the Asus should work well for you. it just depends on how much you are willing to spend. i am by no means an expert on the subject, but i have had extensive experience with all three brands and I've hated every Dell i owned.

My current laptop is a really old (2007) HP Pavilion, which heats up and crashes if I have too many browser tabs open, or if I play videos. Not to mention the battery doesn't hold charge.

I'm looking for something to replace it with, preferably something with Windows 7, an SSD drive, and a good battery life. I also code in Mathematica for school, so any hardware that can speed up the calculations would be good. My budget is around $1000.

I've looked at the ThinkPad T and L series. The T series with built in Smart Card readers are what I'm looking for, however, the Lenovo website currently don't allow you to pick the 6-cell battery packs. The L series on the other hand, allows the 9 cell battery option, and comes with an Express Card slot, but without a Smart Card reader, so I would have to get the reader separately.

An optical drive would be nice, so that everything is in one neat package, but if I must, I can settle with an external optical drive for the few times I may need to use a CD.

I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. Also, how much SSD storage and RAM should I get? Would the minimum (128GB SSD, 4GB RAM) suffice, or would it be better for something more (256GB SSD, 8GB RAM)? Also, is the FHD IPS display worth the extra cost over the HD+ with no IPS if the display size is 14'?

Answer:Asus laptop for school

Page not found.

Well give us some requirements that you are looking for. Like screen size, RAM, OS, and stuff like that. I mean a netbook can accomplish what you want and not cost you a fortune. But the screen size on those is small. So do you want something around 10" or something more lke 14-17" for screen size?

Most of what you described can be done on a netbook. Even the most basic of laptops can do what you want. It just comes down to your preference on screen size.

Sony - VAIO Laptop with Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology - VGN-Z610Y/B

I have messed with it at best buy and I like it but it seems overpriced. Also looked at Lenovo Think Pads which is about the same price but has a little more options. Looking for decent amount of ram and larger hdd. Also I want to put windows 7 on it so i do not want to pay for a pre isntalled os.

I'm thinking of getting a Laptop for school, but since Ive only ever brought/built desktops before, I'm not really sure what laptop would be best, only what I want from it and can afford...

-I can spend around £500.
-Needs to be powerful enough to run Visual Studio 2008 without any problems (VS08 is probs the most demanding app I'll use at school)
-At least Dx9 with pixel shader 3. Dx10 would be nice if possible
-If possible without spending too much I wouldn't mind being able to play games at decent settings (eg HL2:Episode 2) without lag

Ive had a look around but couldn't realy find anything useful to tell me if a laptop is capable of what I want or not...this looks like it may be more than capable, but I'm not really sure if thats the case, nor if it's actauly a good deal for £499...

That is a decent laptop that will do all you want it to.

I have been given a laptop with no hard drive (ex school) i have added a new HD and trying to install windows 7 disk. Unfortunately i press enter on the dvd image (rather than usb or 2 others) and it goes straight back to black background and tells me to 'insert system disk and press any key' Would be thrilled for any help! Thanks

Answer:am trying to install Win 7 on school old laptop with new HDD

You have to enter the BIOS at startup and in the Boot Order, choose boot from dvd or cd rom first. Save the settings and exit. Put the Win 7 disk in the tray and reboot. Look for a short message on the screen that says press any key to boot from cd. It will be fast so make sure you hit it quick. The computer should then boot to the win 7 disk. Follow the onscreen instructions to create a partition and install Win 7. If you don't have a disk for the computer, you'll need to hunt around for any drivers that weren't installed.

My son has to use a laptop in school, need a cheapish one as may be dropped/don't want it to be a target for thieves, but needs relatively good battery life and light as he will have to carry it around. Anyone got any recommendations?

Answer:Laptop for 12 year old to take to school

What will the laptop have to do? I'm wondering whether a little netbook would suit.I think you have to accept that any computer is potentially a target for thieves, no matter how low priced it may be. The thief will probably just see "a computer", rather than exercising any selectivity! So the important thing will be to instil the best security practices into your son.

I've been looking at some laptops and would like to play demanding games like skyrim, etc., 15.6" would be best.

here's some ideas i had.
- lenovo Y580 (the base model) IdeaPad Y580 15.6" Laptop | Shop | Lenovo | US | Lenovo | (CA)

- HP Pavilion DV6-6C50CA HP Pavilion DV6-6C50CA Entertainment - 15.6" - Core i5 2450M - Windows 7 Ho - A7G74UA#ABC - Notebook Computers - CDW.CA

- Acer Aspire V3-771G-9875 Acer Aspire V3-771G-9875 17.3-Inch Laptop (Midnight Black): Computers & Accessories

- HP Pavilion dv6-6c53nr Buy HP Pavilion dv6-6c53nr, 15.6 inch entertainment notebook pc, Intel Core i5 processor, WiDi, HDMI - Microsoft Store Online

I really like the GTX 660 on the lenovo, but it comes with only 720p. any other ideas?

Good evening everyone. Thanks for your access to this thread. I hope you to read and answer for this question.

I want to ask everyone that which software should I use for keeping security of my PC.

Now I am using Bitdefender Total Security 2017 as main anti-malware soft on my main desktop PC.
And also I was using F-secure SAFE as anti-malware soft on my PC until last week.

Yesterday, I heard that new Avast Antivirus 2017 was released, and new Avast Free is including behaviour scanning system.

I am having trouble deciding which software should I use as anti-malware soft.
Please tell me about your recommend.

I think that...

?Protection features
Better : Bitdefender 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017

?Performance and speed
Lighter : Avast Free 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Bitdefender 2017

?the risk of false positive trouble
Bigger risk : F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017 > Bitdefender 2017

?SSL (HTTPS) Scanning is enable without fake SSL certificate to browser
Unnecessary fake certificate : Avast Free, F-secure
Need fake certificate : Bitdefender Total

F-secure SAFE is the very nice solution as protection from malwares and keeping speedy PC. But it is having big risk of false positive ratings; especially the website blocking is not good with many many false positive ratings. And, sometimes slow down my PC.

Bitdefender Total Security 2017 is the best solution as protection from malwares. This software is providing users very nice anti-malware solu... Read more

Answer:Avast Free 2017 vs F-secure SAFE vs Bitdefender Total Security 2017

Quick question, why Bitdefender Total Protection? Do you need ALL those additional features, or looking for an Antivirus only, because there are Bitdefender Antivirus Plus and Free versions.

What about other protection software like Emsisoft Anti-Malware/Internet Security or ESET Nod32 Antivirus/Internet Security?

Hello, Guys!
I'm new on this forum but I Really Really like this good Forum
So I had Emsisoft for couple of months now
But Recently I've switched over to Avast Premier Beacuse I've never used Avast before So I wanted to try It out
But now I'm without any AV As I do not know what to Install Avast or Emsisoft!
I have licences for both So thats not the problem
Thanks In Advance And btw This forum really nice.

Answer:Avast Premier 2017 Vs Emsisoft Internet Security 2017

Both have excellent protection functions, but certainly they are two different security solutions.
I think the choice of one or the other one is really subjective, I've used Emsisoft for many years and it is my first choice

Haven't posted in a while. Well college is coming around and i NEED a laptop, I'll use it for notes, papers, projects, and homework, but that's not what I'm worried about

I'm very OCD about what I buy. I have around 1200-1500 to spend, and i want the best bang for my buck. I want a gaming laptop, that's at least somewhat solid, what am I looking at with that price range?

Answer:buying laptop for school/gaming help?

You're going to need more money for a good gaming laptop.

Ok I did a little searching and I found a list of mobile video devices.

Nvidia GeForce Go7600
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
ATI Mobility Radeon X1700
Nvidia GeForce 8400M-GT
Nvidia GeForce Go7700
Nvidia GeForce Go7600GT
Nvidia GeForce 8600M-GS
Nvidia GeForce 8600M-GT
Nvidia GeForce Go7800
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800
Nvidia GeForce 8700M-GT
Nvidia GeForce Go7900GS
ATI Mobility Radeon X1900
Nvidia GeForce Go7800GTX
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800XT
Nvidia GeForce Go7900GTX
Nvidia GeForce Go7950GTX

Look for a laptop that you can afford with at least one of the above, 2GB of memory for Windows Vista and the mobility processor of your choice. The farther you go down the list the faster and more expensive the video will be. All the recognized brand names I saw where $2000.00 and up.

I am studying MBA now online while working at the university I go to I am making heavy use of spreadsheets and have a visual disability. My current computer is an HP TS15 from 2013. I do like to game casually at 720p or what ever as long as it doesn't lag. I record the class sessions using OBS which makes the computer lag a fair bit. Honestly I could do without the touch screen too it just gets all greasy from touching and professors end up touching it to show me something not knowing it is touch and messing something up. This is what my specs are now.

AMD A10 5745M, 8GB ram, 1TB 5400rpm HDD, Radeon hd 8610G + 8600M dual graphics.

I do want something 17 inch with a low- mid rage graphics card for the occasional game while I travel home. I also would like it to have easy access to the HDD and ram through the bottom. MY current laptop cannot have the hard drive easily replaced which is annoying. the whole computer has to be torn apart just to get at the HDD.

I would like to spend anywhere from 500-750$ and this is my current idea

Acer Laptop Aspire E E5-774G-570J Intel Core i5 6200U (2.30 GHz) 8 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 17.3" Windows 10 Home -

Does this look like a decent laptop? or is there anything better for the money?

Mostly i play a random assortment of FPSers, LoL, and WoW.
My old laptop is terrible and hoping to finally play these games at least on high graphics, budget is around $700ish
this is what i found so far - Refurbished: ASUS N56VM-RB71 Intel Core i7 8GB Memory 750GB HDD 15.6" Notebook Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
but it being refurbished worries me a bit, anyone have any other recommendations?

also i live in Canada...(may affect where i can buy from)

thanks in advance

Answer:Picking a laptop for gaming/school

I would say refurb is the way to go to get the best bang for your buck as I have suggested in another very semilar thread Lenovo has a great outlet this link should take you to laptops with i7s and there are a few under 720 with dedicated video cards you kinda just have to jump on something when you see it and like it though sometimes the door busters are i7 as well but not today.
Sorry about the ling link I'm on my cell phone

My son's a school teacher in CA and bought a new laptop to use in his classes. Details of the new computer:
Comp: HP Envy notebook version 1511 running Windows 10 Home. Graphics card: Intel HD Graphics 520.

This new computer does not have a VGA port and he's been trying to use HDMI with a Belkin VGA to HDMI converter. He has developed PowerPoints with animation using PowerPoint 2016 home and office. They all worked fine with his old computer with a VGA port. But when he uses the new computer with the converter, the screen looks great until he runs the PowerPoint and the PowerPoint display is about half the size of the screen. He's tried to run them in Full Screen Mode, and has tried to change the resolution but changing it to wide screen distorts the images and 4:3 makes it too small.

The school owns the projector and is not likely to replace it with a newer version for at least ten more years.

Businessmen use the new computers and old projectors so there has to be a way to get the display to be full screen and not distorted but we can't find anything on the internet to come even close.

He's spent a day trying to get it to work when he discovered his first converter was bad, so when he got over that frustration, he ran into this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wrote this under the hardware, thinking it make be the converter or port, but as I read this, it may better fall under the Software. I will not duplicate the post ... Read more

I have full access to the BIOS but I have no idea what to do...

Answer:Kid needs a computer for school... should I go with a laptop or desktop?

Given a choice, I vote desktop

1) You usually need pay more for laptops
2) Laptops will also need to endure more wear and tear as they're mobile and will be probably be dropped or slip out of hand some time and ya need worry more about damages
3) And importantly, i think it's easier to keep an eye on what kid's are doing on a computer when it's a desktop!

Hi guys. I am typing this from my desktop just for reference. I have a Macbook Pro with a 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo and a 8600M Video card (for reference on what model the laptop is) and am running Leopard and Vista in Bootcamp. I use it for school (for some programs like Office 2007 and others, although I am aware Office 2008 just came out). It has been running mostly fine since the Bootcamp Beta with Tiger. Now I had Windows Live One Care on this computer and that computer as my antivirus. And it expired on 2/1/08 on both computers. I uninstalled it on this desktop with really no problems. But I installed Fix it 8 Professional before the expiration date on the license on the laptop and thought I disabled Live One Care. I should know better that having 2 antivirus programs can be bad? But what happens if only one is for viruses and the other is like tune up stuff? Anyways for some reason yesterday (it when I first noticed it happening) a lot of Windows Vista is messed up. 2. I cannot open the Network panel from the Vista start menu shortcut.

Hi, so I'm in the process of purchasing a laptop for University and was hoping someone could help me out with a couple questions I have.

1) How does the AMD Turion? 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 (1.8GHz/1MB), perform against the Mobile AMD Sempron? Processor 3500+? Would both perform well for a school laptop?

2) How much better is the ATI RADEON® Xpress1270 HyperMemory? than the ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 with 256MB HyperMemory? Would both be good enough for basic office and internet use?

3) Is the AMD Turion? 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 (1.8GHz/1MB) with the ATI RADEON® Xpress1270 HyperMemory? worth about 150$ more than the Mobile AMD Sempron? Processor 3500+ and ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 with 256MB HyperMemory? Should I not bother with the upgrade for 150$?

Thanks in advance for helping me out. Most of this stuff goes right over my head!

My laptop has XP Home, and when the computer guy when to put in the networks domain, he said there was no place to put in the domain only a work"group" which wouldn't work.

How do I go about getting it to work? He said there is a network card so it should be able to work, but he's not sure how to do it.

Is it even possible with the Home edition or do I need the Professional edition?
If it's possible what do we do?

So lets say I know that security is a joke in a way. I have a basic firewall. I have a router (with built in firewall) I have anti virus.

But... it slows my computer down so .... if I want to keep my computer safe when downloading files, browsing websites, this is a laptop so it will be going places at some point.

What do you rec. website or downloads for basic security? Is

Microsoft security essentials, windows firewall, and malware enough? In cunjunction with a router at home with a firewall?

I read about sand boxing and I do have avast (but I disabled it for speed issues) so what about running commando and so forth. I mean... it seems silly to install a ton of programs if it makes it so I can't even use the internet. Also is crome a safe browser or should I be using Firefox?

My fear is simply a virus that messes up my computer, someone getting into my email account and sending virus's out.. that kind stuff...

:P hehe just curious if there is a good website to read up on this stuff for.

If what I got will keep me safe from bios passwords and highjacking software im cool. I don't got anything worth stealing I don't order online or anything... so any info be great. (computer will be used for school soon though) don't want people messing with it for sure.... but at the same time important It doesn't get bogged down

Answer:so what if im parnoid? Keep my laptop safe at school

Heres my answer..

Hey guys.

I want to get a laptop to use for school projects (like slideshows and videos), gaming (H2V, CS:S) and surfing the web (do people still say that?) and I'd like to hear from someone who knows more about it than me about how mush it would cost.

Here's an extensive list of what I'd like it to have:
- Windows Vista Home Premium (there's $300 already)
- At least a 3Ghz CPU
- Mid- to high-end graphics card (GeForce 8600 maybe)
- A good sound card (nothing fancy)
- At least a 120-160GB hard drive, reasonably fast (say 7200 RPM, is that fast?)
- At least 4GB of RAM
- A relatively small screen size (18-21") so I don't have to be carrying around a huge bag
- Decent networking capabilities (good enough to download stuff, play games online and use my school's wireless)

I hope I didn't miss anything. I don't know much about laptops so any advice or insight is helpful.

On Apple's website there's a thing where you can play with upgrades and a few other settings to customize your computer, and it tells you how much it would cost. But Macs are lousy for gaming so I tried to find a thing like that for PC laptops but had no luck.

Answer:How much can I expect to pay for a laptop for school and games?

Dude, how much are you planning on spending? Those are some pretty heavy specs for a lappy. I really don't think you need quite that specs for basic gaming (though definitely get someone else's opinion, I only know from what I've looked at and such). but try Dell, they've got some pretty good deals. however, if you really do want even higher specs, you might wanna try something like Alienware.
Again, I'm no expert, but for a lappy those are some pretty high end specs.

Oh yeah, lol. BTW, if I understood you're talking 4-5 grand.

I'm starting grad school and need a new laptop - something light and fast. I have had 3 Acer laptops in the past, that I have been really happy with, with one excursion into Mac land, with a MacBook Pro that I absolutely HATED, and which would give me a BSOD on a regular basis.
I want an i7 Haswell processor and 8gigs Ram, 256 SSD. I'm currently trying to decide between the Acer Aspire s7 and the Toshiba Ultrabook 13 i7s.
Any thoughts or personal experiences with either machine would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to actually see one "in the flesh" before purchasing, but that is proving to be next to impossible - I've yet to find one in and concrete store.

Answer:Need a light, new laptop for Grad school

I am very much satisfied with my Dell XPS 14, which has been discontinued now. It is the 3rd Gen. i7, but Haswell models are available now. The best thing is that it is an ultrabook, so it is lightweight and of course, XPS looks beautiful. I personally don't like the looks of Acer. Also I would suggest a screen size of 14", I find it to be ideal screen size.

Hi folks. My current laptop is an Acer Extansa 5220, which I got just over 4 years ago. I was quite happy with it until this summer, when it started to slow down, overheat, and just generally give me problems. I will be getting it checked to make sure that I will in fact need a new computer, but figured to see what was on the market now.

Country of purchase: USA

Budget range: Conservative: 300, Average: 400, Max: 500

Purpose (netbook, ultraportable, mainstream, gaming, desktop replacement, etc.): The primary use for it will be pretty mainstream. The biggest tax on the system will likely be ARC GIS.

Screen size preference: None

OS preference (Windows/ Mac/ Linux): Windows

Gaming requirements (example games and desired fps/settings): none

Performance requirements (video, CAD, etc.): I do some photo editing with Lightroom and very limited AutoCAD and ARC GIS work, which would likely be the 3 heaviest programs.

Method of computer support (office supplier, college bookstore, self support): generally self support.

Brand preferences and reasons (already owned accessories, familiarity, business compatibility): Not really

Any particular style that you like (examples are great): I am pretty blind when it comes to aesthetics and computers.

Which of the following qualities would you prefer? (Choose one, the other, or balanced)

Long battery life -vs- Low weight: Both are important, but if I really had to chose, I would pick low weight, but r... Read more

I'm looking for a laptop for school. But since I'm getting a laptop for school, I should just go ahead and get one that will allow me to do alot of photoshop editing and uploading my pics via my camera. I want a laptop that will run PS CS3 smooth and if I can play a little CoD4/WoW, I won't mind.

I had my eye on this Acer Aspire, but I read the 8400M G doesn't run games well and the negative reviews about the touch pad is disheartening. My absolute limit is $1200 but I'd prefer below $1000. Screen should be 14", 14.1" or 15.4" and battery life should be at 3Hrs+ if possible.

No Apple or HP/Compaq.

Thats it. Hope I get more help here than another forum where I asked this.

Hi All, I am hoping you could help me pick my next laptop. I need a laptop that will work well for both my telecommuting job in finance and my law school education. My top priority is speed and the ability to run multiple programs at once. I don't have time to wait for my computer to accomplish tasks - I need it to be lightning quick. Weight is not a concern. I want at least a 14" screen and a keyboard with a number pad on the right side would be a big plus. The red dot mouse is a must since I am completely hooked after using my T42 for the past 9 years. I don't play video games and I don't take pictures or videos. I do watch movies every now and again, so a high def screen is nice, but not necessary. I would like to keep the price around $1,000 or less. I feel the ThinkPad Edge E531 might be a good fit for me. I would like to opt for the 128 GB Solid State Drive, but it seems expensive for the size. I am not a computer savvy or technical person, but if someone has straight forward and reliable instructions on how to swap the 500GB Hard Drive Disk, 7200 RPM with a 256 GB SSD Drive on the E531, I would be willing to attempt the switch myself. I have heard the additional 24 GB NGFF SSD Micro Hard Drive will not provide the same increases in speed as a larger SSD primary hard drive, so this is probably not the best option for me. I would also like to opt for 8GB of Memory, but I have no idea what... Answer:Need Help Selecting a Laptop - Business & School Needs

Hi Larry - I recently replaced a Thinkpad A21m (older than the T42) with a E530 (6272-4GU) and am quite happy. One thing to consider if you are a touch-typist is getting used to the 'chiclet' style keyboard. It's not bad though. I would suggest you download the owners manual from the support section above. It explains how to do replacement/upgrades on various components. Mostly it's just take out one or two screws on a back cover to remove/install a device. Pretty much anyone can do it. As a rule of thumb, most all upgrades such as memory and hdd's cost more when supplied by the manufacturer. But many people like the convenience. Also, if you install you own ssd you have the issue of reinstalling the OS and other software. Their is also the issue of the OS. Lenovo (and dealers) have been selling these Thinkpad Edge's with Win 7 installed and Win 8 discs included. I think the intention is to sell you a computer you are comfortable with and then 'nudge' you toward the Win 8 OS. Personally, I would have preferred Win 7 discs since I don't intend to use Win 8. However, you do get the option of making a system recovery disc for the Win 7 install. Based upon your intended use I think you will be happy. However, the Thinkpad Edge models are not quite as well made as the T42 and other earlier Thinkpads. I think one just has to be a little more careful handling them. Good luck.

A couple of years ago I moved myself and some of the fam from Apple Everything to Windows 10. Yesterday however, I bought an new 2017 iPad. I really love the Surface devices, so why?
First, because Microsoft are no longer supporting the phones that are in our house, we are being forced from that platform. So rather than living and breathing completely and happily inside the Microsoft ecosystem, I am now forced to diversify and go elsewhere. This really is a big deal, and changes my thinking from the unthinkable (leaving the MS ecosystem) to the possible (shifting back towards Apple). That being the case, why should I then buy a Microsoft Surface tablet (I was planning to buying a new Surface Pro M3) when I an now FORCED to be open to Apple and Android?
Second, Microsoft have made my leap back to Apple so easy, because they have done what Apple and Google have refused to do, which is to make their software available on the others' platforms. Thus the transition to iPad is easy. For example, Word and PowerPoint are effectively free (via my 365 account that I will not be renewing at full cost next time; I will use the academic version which costs me almost nothing). Outlook on iPad is a great app (better than on PC platform). Lots of other apps that Microsoft that I use are also really nice on iPad (e.g. Wunderlist) and made the transition really simple and clean.
Third, the Facebook app on iPad is ... Read more

Answer:I did the unthinkable and chose a 2017 iPad over a 2017 Surface Pro M3

Microsoft are no longer supporting the phones that are in our house, we are being forced from that platform
Can't make sense of that. Presumably you have really old windows phones that no longer get updates?
And what does that have to do with what tablet you use? Windows has timeline, cloud clipboard and a whole host of platform agnostic features coming this fall, so Windows will play nice with android or ios (better than those OSes play with any other).
You don't even need your tablet, desktop and phone to be the same platform. You just need the same services, which for MSFT, exist on every platform.

We're currently putting together our annual Windows Central Best of the Year list, and though some categories are easy to pick, the best overall laptop is proving to be somewhat of a challenge. We all feel strongly about our picks, and many of us have different opinions on the subject.
Surface Book 2 gets my pick, because it's so powerful and versatile. But I want to know what you think. What's the best of overall laptop (any category, so 2-in-1, convertible, whatever) of this year, in your opinion? And why?

I am looking to get a laptop for school (Microsoft office, emails, etc...) but also to have some gaming capabilities, most importantly to run Dota 2 1080p @60 FPS (the only game I really care about on this laptop).

The budget is about 700?-900?, but it is quite variable, as I can go higher if it is really worth it.

Thanks in advance,

EDIT: is what you can search with, but you can just tell me which product and I will search it.

Answer:Need a laptop for school with some light gaming capabilities

1080p? On your laptop screen, or on an external screen? And wow 60fps is gonna be pushing it.

So basically got my school laptop yesterady, the internet worked fine at school but when I came home it wouldn't work. When I came to school again today it worked, when I came home again it wouldn't.

The internet connection showed that it was connected () but I don't got internet acess. Some restarts I have internet (pretty slow) just on the beginning, sometimes pages just loads forever or very long without connecting and sometimes it just loads a little bit and says network error.

I've been working with trying to fix it all day yesterday and like one hour today, and now I just want to get it done so I came here to make a thread. My network is fine with the computers/telephones in my house so it's not the router.

I've tried to use the windows network error checking tool, it just says that the strandard gateway isn't available (which is not getting automatically resolved) and it identifies a problem aswell that the connection between the router and internet has disconnected.

I have tried to...

* Restarted
* Changing battery network card settings to high priority
* Disconnecting, reconnecting
* Re-typing wifi password
* Deactivating ipv6
* Using a DNS
* Few CMD commands
* Changing an option called "dulex/rulex someting" or something that tells how much mb/s you should receive (or something like that) from router to automatically detect to 100mb/s, didn't make any difference either
..and more

Answer:New laptop, can't connect to wifi at home but can at school

This is quite simple - The School is using a proxy within Internet Explorer. You must have admin rights for this to work.

On Internet Explorer, - Tools - Internet Options - Connections - LAN Settings - Untick the bottom box (Proxy)

Close and re-open IE, everything should be working.

Make sure you make a note as you will need to re-tick the box when you're next at school.

Like the title says I'm picking up a laptop for some light gaming and to use while I'm at school. Namely because my house is 3 miles away and uphill and I'd rather not have to bum around the school computer labs on the days when I have time between classes.

Anyways, my max budget is about a grand and I'm about 90% sure on the laptop I want to get.

Here a link to it with specs:

Lenovo - Customize - Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 - 77582EU - Services and software

Quick Summary of what it's got:

1.86ghz C2D
256mb 8600m GTS
250gb hdd
2gb mem
6 cell battery
15.4" glossy lcd
Dolby 4.1 audio with micro woofer

So it works out to be about $950 after tax and such.

So, thoughts, suggestions, whatever, anyone?

Answer:Looking to pick up a laptop school/light gaming

Sounds good to me, that's a pretty good deal for a 250GB, 8600M GT/GS (don't think there is a 8600M GTS, there's an 8600M GS and an 8600M GT, which one is it?). I'd say it's a good deal.

At the moment i use my school laptop because my gaming computer is at a friends house.

Anyway i find it weird that the teachers have blocked everything, i'm not allowed to download things because i need admin rights and i don't know the username + password.

I tried the cmd method but they have block that aswell, so i'm wondering if there is a method to get the username and password so that i can finally download things, i paid for the school pc and when we can't do anything on it (except youtube) i feel really pissed of and mad about that.

If anyone could help me with this issue i would be really thankfull (: (sorry for my bad english)

Answer:School laptop blocking everything, need help with admin rights and cmd

Hi Steneman,

I work at as an IT administrator for a school district so i understand what you're going through. Those restrictions are in place because that laptop is school property (for now) or because the IT department does not allow people to bring their own devices for the network.

long story short... those restrictions are there so you cant do anything to the computer they don't want you doing (such as downloading pirated content or software that is not legal). You will probably have to deal with it for now, or hack the computer. Id advise not trying to hack it though because if they find out the consequences may be even more frustrating (such as no network access).

Sorry I couldn't be more help as far as getting you up and playing but its just one of those suck-suck situation.

I am looking at this as a laptop for a grade school student who wants to do homework, surfing, and play flash online games. Being very pleasantly surprised by how much I like the laptop in my sig, I'm shopping just for Lenovo. This one I linked to seems rather cheap (in terms of price) to me. I realize a celeron is not the fastest chip around, but it has an SSD. Is this an incredibly good deal for what I'm getting? Or is that just the going rate---not like I have to snap it up now? Should I be leery of these smaller (its actually a tad lighter than the Macbook air) laptops, or the N22 series in general? EDIT: OK just realized its not an SSD---its flash memory. Never bought a laptop with that. Is this a red flag?

One more thing---how easy would this be, to take out/replace the battery? And can I unscrew the bottom and upgrade the RAM easily? Or is it designed to be never torn down, except by a professional? I sent back a laptop that I bought from HP (right before I bought this Lenovo) b/c I was not able to replace the battery.

Good evening Tech Support Guy forums. Here is one for you. I am using a laptopt that is used at a school. The owner (member of staff) can connect to the schools wireless internet but not the one here at home. The computer is running XP Pro and I'm a Linux guy so I'm stumped.

Bascially the wireless card picks up the router, connects and tells me the signal strength is great and all is well. That is not the case. When trying to get anywhere on the net I get the old could not find server page. I have taken an ethernet cable out of the back of one of the other machines and plugged it into the laptop. I need to tell it to not use proxy at all and to automatically detect settings. That is fine but the owner needs the wireless. Like I said the card works fine at the school. Here it won't. I told it to not look for hte proxy and get the settings automatically. We have other machines that connect to the router wirelessly and the router itself assigns the laptop an IP.

Can anyone help me fix this and get it all sorted?

The card is D-Link Airplus DWL-G650+ and the router is a Belkin F5D7230-4 Wireless G router.

Any help much appreciated.

I'm trying to help my sister fix a problem with her PC, and am stuck in a problem.

The PC was her earlier school-laptop, but after finishing school, she bought it legally from the school. It still has the school setup, and it's not possible to boot from the XP-CD. Even though the install-cd is inserted in the drive, the PC boots to the ordinary partition. Entering "Boot Device Options" only lets me choose between "Notebook Hard Drive" and "Notebook Ethernet". Clicking "BIOS Setup", this message appears:

"User ID: BIOS Administrator
Enter password:"

Neither I nor my sister knows the admin password. The tech-desk at her school is closed, so we can't get help from there. This is really frustrating, it's her computer and she have legally bought it from the school, so this shouldn't been a problem! I've also tried to enter the admin account without password, but of course it's password protected... Is there any way for me to format and reinstall the OS without the need for the admin password (legally, without hacking)?

Answer:Hard format earlier school laptop

At first, the update has failed many times but I managed to update KIS after several reboots. Now everything is working like a charm! The software is so light and does not make the browser so laggy unlike other solutions! I will keep posting updates to this post to share with you my opinion!

This is a clean install of windows with Appguard at default settings
Using Ublock at medium mode with adguard's filters

I'm using also Sandboxie free on demand for unknown apps and also for chrome in incognito for bank transactions and online shopping

Previously I wasn't using AV but a lot of tweaks in windows like Software Restriction Policies, blocking elevation for unsigned apps and since 1 month I'm with appguard for main protection and sandboxie for unknown apps

This give me a excellent performance and rarely updates with maximum protection with Appguard at lockdown mode

When looking for the best laptop for programming, you'll have a certain set of criteria that the device will need to meet, as well as features it will need to have. For example, you're going to need plenty of processing power in a laptop for programming, so that it can compile and run your code as fast as possible. Thankfully, modern laptop processors come with plenty of cores and high clock speeds, which certainly makes looking for the best laptop for programming easier.

You'll also want plenty of RAM. We'd recommend at least 8GB - if you're running complex code, and you'll need a large hard drive. If a laptop also comes with a solid state drive (SSD), that's even better, as it will help with the overall speed of your programming and coding - especially if you regularly rebuild the code you write with minor changes.
Having a dedicated graphics card isn't essential for a laptop for programming, unless you are coding graphically-intensive games that you then want to test out. Modern Intel processors come with integrated graphics capabilities that are powerful enough for pretty much all programming tasks.

Hello Everyone,

I have a friend who's having issues with the speed of her net at home, on one particular laptop. She just purchased a new Asus laptop not too long ago and while she's at ODU her speeds are fine, when shes home it drops very low. She also has another laptop and desktop that are perfectly fine, and get the top speed their isp provides.

On the problem laptop (the Asus)
Shes running windows 7 64 bit, the router is a Linksys E1200, the network card itself is an Atheros AR9485

Her speeds at home are : 0.52 mbps on the Asus, while her other laptop and desktop gets 33 mbps
Her speed at school is 28 mbps on the Asus

So we are trying to figure out why her Asus wants to act up at home and not at school

Answer:Very slow internet speeds at home, but not at school on one laptop

it does not sound like a computer problem -- may be a router/wireless/network setting problem--to try to eliminate possibilities...
try plugging the machine into the router directly with a cable--if the speed picks up then there's a setting somewhere that needs a tweak.

Obviously its not the device. It has something to do with your computer.

When you plug in the device just let it sit for a minute, vista should go and get the proper drivers/firmware for the device.

Watch you tray in the bottom right hand side of the screen. Does a box pop up when you plug in the device.

Do you have a firewall installed if so which one?
