Spectre x360 Poor battery life (Skylake version)

Question: Spectre x360 Poor battery life (Skylake version)

I just purchased the new Spectre x360 (i5 6200u version, model number d108) and I'm experiencing muddling battery life. I only seem to be managing around 6 hours or so of casual browsing. This is with the screen brightness down to the lowest possible, killing/removing unnecessary programs and barely anything running in the background other than Google Drive. I've seen a review which managed to get 9 hours of browsing and that was on the version running the Broadwell CPUs which are supposedly not quite as efficient as the newest ones. So what's going on here? I know manufacturers exaggerate but half the marketed time with minimal load and lowest brightness doesn't seem right?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Hi @fanalk,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Spectre x360 with poor battery life. Battery life will vary depending on numerous factors including product model, configuration, loaded applications, features, use, wireless functionality, and power management settings. The maximum capacity of the battery will naturally decrease with time and usage. Here is a link to a performance troubleshooter with Windows. Biggest thing is the Apps are not closed or stopped. Please let me know how this goes.Thanks.

I just get the new HP Spectre X360 recently (earlier this month) and I've been loving it so far except for the battery life. I have been barely getting 5.5~6 hours (which is not even close to the advertised 14 hour battery life) with the battery saver settings while being connected to a stable wifi network and just listening to music and browsing on the web. Is there any way to resolve this issue? I also checked the battery through the HP Assistant program and it seems fine.

My x360 QHD Spectre has a low battery life in the beginning it has a 7 hour life with medium brightness then it's like 4:30 hours with Battery Saver on mode and I already removed bloatware and I only watch movies on it but when I game it's 2:30 hours (Fan gets loud and laptop gets hot) I'm pretty sure the battery life should be 10 hours

I recently bought my Spectre x360 and overall I am very happy with my purchase. However, I am a bit concerned with battery life. For my version (i7 processor and UHD screen) I am only achieving about 5 hours usage from each charge. I had expected nearer 9 hours from the adverts for the model. Reading messages from other users I seem to find that to achieve nearer 9 hours i should lower screen brightness to about 50%. Surely the main reason for buying a notebook with a UHD-4K screen is for the display to be bright especially when watching videos (Nertflix, iPlayer etc).Any suggestions about improving battery life please

I bought the Spectre x360 to replace my HP Envy.  The promised 12+ hours of battery life have resulted in only 4 hours.  VERY disappointing since, I've chosen to buy this product over MAC which delivers 10 hours.  I have checked the forum and there is no solution to this and has been going on for at least a year.  Why is HP not delivering?  I spent $1400 for something that was promised and not delivered.  Can anyone help?  Can I send this back and get a refund? I can't find help anywhere.  LK

I bought a brand new hp spectre x360 last December 2016 because I was amaze of the features being advertised at Best Buy Station Square Burnaby, CA store and they order it for me. When I got my order which I'm expecting it's brand new product, however after 2 weeks of using it I observed that the battery life has short period of time to think that I fully charged it. Because of these I return my laptop in the store to give complain regarding this matter. The store took it for repair and until now it's almost a month I haven't received any update regarding the status of my laptop. And I'm paying for the laptop which I haven't use. Kindly address this issue and hoping to hear from HP company soon.

Hi,  I was not super sure as to where to post this so I put "Notebook Video, Display and Touch".So I bought this new HP Spectre x360 about a week ago during the cyber sales in preparation for classes at University next semester as I was wanting something small, lightwieght, and with a long lasting battery that could get me though the shcool day. I love everything about this laptop except it seems to have a very short battery life. When I bought it, all the tech reviews and the official HP website claimed an 11 to 12 hour battery life, however I cannot seem to get more than around 4 or 5. Perhaps the battery is bad?I do not know too much about computers so I had my brother help me choose the model. I have the i7 6500u, 16gbs of ram, and a 512gb SSD. My brother said with these specific components, the battery life could be effected a little bit but was under the impression that it would still be able to serve me at least 8 hours while at school. Should I contact HP support about the battery life problem? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Hi!  I am also having concerns about my laptop's battery life. It would probably run for a max 5 hours out of the claimed 12 hours battery life. I don't have any applications - besides Microsoft programs and iTunes (NO GAMES). I don't overcharge my laptop, so once it reaches 100%, I unplug straight away. Any solutions out there to improve battery performance? Thanks so much in advance! Sam

I just bought the Spectre 360 and am having the same overheating issues as above.  One of the main reasons for the purchase was the hyperbaric cooling system so the laptop would not overheat.  This one is so hot to the touch within an hour of turning it on that it burns my leg if I am using it on my lap.  When on a table, the bottom vents are covered but the side vents are not.  This is a laptop, it is not built to carry around a cooling table, it is meant to be portable.  Mine is less than 12 hours old and I feel as though I need to return it too.  Any updates to this issue before I do that? Thanks.

I bought the i7, QHD version of the Spectre convertible laptop two days before Christmas. Overall, I think it's a great product - which makes it even sadder that I'm thinking of returning it.The advertisements said 11 hours of battery life. Now, obviously that's not going to be accurate for normal everyday usage, but the salespeople in the store (and common sense) said that it would probably still get at least an eight hour, more like nine hour battery life on a single charge. Nope! FOUR HOURS. That's ridiculous. That's just over a third of the advertised battery life.I thought (and still think) it might be an issue with the battery itself, as the computer runs really really hot - it's basically impossible to put this thing on my lap at times. Which is annoying. But I did the HP Support Assistant battery check and it said it was fine, and then I did the BIOS battery check and it passed. And then the HP staff member I was chatting with on the support system had the gall to say "4 hours is actually really good". NO, IT IS NOT REALLY GOOD. Similar laptops in this category get about 7 hours of real time use. I bought this computer in large part because of that puported long battery life, and all the reviews said that the battery life was pretty great - none mentioned being four hours. Were reviewers sent different computers? And this four hours is not playing video games on full brightness settings. No. This four hours is on 25% brightness, power saver mode on, battery saver mode ... Read more

I struggle to manage 2 hours on this, with brightness at the max (I need it like that). I've seen other people managing 5-6 hours and thats all I really need. Answer:Spectre X360 battery life issue!

Greetings for the day dqthehoang, Regarding the battery life and battery backup that has been mentioned here, when the unit says battery upto 12hours, on a idle situation the battery life is upto 12hours or when you are using minimal applications, There are certain applications which would use more battery power, check when you are using any particular application if the battery drains, try updating BIOS through HP.com and Try running battery test through HPSA to check the functionality of the battery, Perform battery calibration on a timely manner to keep the battery in good shape. Regards,Zoan  Please click ?Accept as Solution ? if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.Click the ?Kudos, Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say ?Thanks? for helping!

Hello, I got my 2016 HP Spectre x360 (Kaby Lake) laptop a week ago, and it seems the battery life is very underwhelming. I get around 4 hours from mixed usage (browsing/productivity/media). I had the previous gen. Spectre and almost similar tasks got me 8hr+ battery life. I've tried battery testing/calibration etc. suggested in the support pages. Anyone else having similar problems? I want to give the laptop some chance before I replace/return it.

Hi! I purchased my laptop around 3 to 4 months ago via my school. Initially, the laptop was able to live up to its claims of a "long battery life" but within 2 months, the battery life had decreased from 10 hours to 2-3 hours. Moreover, the laptop seems to be very laggy, despite the fact that the majority of my files are stored in Dropbox and I rarely have anything more than a few google chrome tabs open (and occasionally a microsoft word document open). Are there ways to solve this? Should I purchase a new battery?

The HP spectre x360 is advertised as having up to 12.5 hours of battery life. I was so excited when I got it until 4 hours later when it died. So I set out to maximize its battery life to get the advertised 12 hours. Yet, after taking ABSOLUTELY EXTREME measures to extend its battery life to the fullest, I was ONLY able to get 8 hours of battery life. Here's what I did (My laptop is fully updated latest drivers and everything): Generated a Battery Health Report (everything looked good)Used HP's 'Support Assistant' Battery Check and it came back "OK".Turned on 'Powersave Mode' (this dims the screen even at 100%)Reduced the screen brightness to 70%Limited my use to just ONE program (Microsoft Edge) with super quick use of a few other programs.Disabled Cortana.Disabled One Drive sync.Disabled Desktop Slideshow.Disabled ALL auto startup processes services that I knew to be safe to disable. (I disabled things like Bonjour service, google update, microsoft update and adobe update services). Went into advanced power options & set the "Maximum Processor Performance" to 60% (this caps it at 1.48GHz)Even set the WiFi to "Maximum Battery Savings".Then thought "Oh what the hell" and set EVERYTHING to "Maximum Battery Savings" (things like the GPU, the hard drive, etc).Went into the BIOS and disabled the 'eternal flame' LED indicator  on the F5 key. After exactly 8 hours of use I was down to 14% so I turned off the wifi a... Just bought the new 4k 13 inch spectre x360. So far it has been great, except that I am getting nowhere near the advertised battery life. I have already researched these forums, and read the tips located here - http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c00596784 - and here (translated from Spanish to English) - http://h30467.www3.hp.com/t5/Consejos-de-Expertos-para-notebooks/Consejos-de-mantenimiento-de-Bater%... - and nothing has helped.  In just 2 hours of up time with the screen set to 50% or less, I reached 20% battery remaining. This was only with web browsing and some office processses such as email and Microsoft Word. Do I have a bad battery, or is the battery life overall just not as good (or even close to) advertised? The laptop is less than 30 days old.

So back in June I purchased a mostly specced out Spectre x360 with 3 years of HP Total Care Support. Do you guys think HP might let me trade for the newer one with Skylake via warranty claim since the update is so incremental and well within the life cycle of the early 2015 model? It kind of really sucks that they released a model with Skylake so soon after I purchased mine and a lot of the benefits like battery life are huge for me since I'm rarely near an electric outlet (I got a custom made Spectre with the i7, 8gb of RAM, and 512Gb of SSD, but went with the 1080p display for battery life).

Originally Posted by Mason Sell Do you guys think HP might let me trade for the newer one with Skylake via warranty claim I am not sure they would do that, but why don't you call them and ask? Spectre x360 with broadwell is already an amazing machine. after a rigorous research i settled to buy spectre x360 when it was first released but then i knew that skylake will be available at the end of this year. so i waited for skylake. although there wont be much of performance difference in U series of skylake some improvement is always a plus. so i know how you feel. it is really a bummer to see the next gen machine is just released when you have just bought an old one. but this is how it goes in electronics. If you are happy with the machine and feel that it will be future proof for what you do i would say to carry on with this as long as you want. but if you feel disappointed, and regretting you should have waited for skylake then just exchange it/ sell it as soon as possible and buy the new one and be happy.

Are there any other details about what was updated in the refreshed version of the Spectre x360? Obviously the processors are now 6th gen, and they use Bang & Olufsen sound, but are there any other physical fixes to the device?
I love everything about the spectre x360, especially the design, but I'm conflicted on whether to buy the Spectre, the Surface Book, or wait til the 2nd gen Surface Book next year. One of the things I like about the Surface Book over the Spectre is the keyboard and trackpad experience. I noticed the trackpad for the spectre required a lot more force to click compared to the Surface Book, and the keys weren't as clicky or tactile and felt softer and mushier. You can also see weird dots behind the screen on the Spectre if you look really closely, which I assume has to do with touch screen technology, but it bothers me, especially because other touch screen devices don't have this.
Has anyone played with the refreshed Spectres, and are there any other minor fixes to it, especially to the trackpad, screen, and keyboard? Or is it just the processor and speakers? Thanks.

Hi people.I have been wanting to charge my 2016 spectre x360 (15 inch) laptop with a usb charger since i bought it. I know hp sell a usb charger that should work but i want to use an aftermarket one. Mainly because i want to use a 2 pin power cord so that i can use a folding uk plug with it. (UK plugs are chunky for those that don't know). Also would like the option to charge from any compatible usbc charger i come across along with battery banks etc) I know the 13 inch model got a bios upgrade last year to fix this but even though i did a bios update on mine i cant get my charger to work. Its an Anker A2053 USB-C power delivery power port thing. nothing happens when i plug it in. not even an error message. i have the bios upgrade for this from the 26th october 2016, there is nothing newer that i can see. has anyone got this model working with an aftermarket usbc charger? cheers Rob

Hi dears,I've bought in my country (Italy) the Spectre x360 (2015 edition), model 4102nl, 8gb RAM, 256 SSD, i7, QHD display in september, so it's two months old.Since first day I've unboxed my Spectre, I've noticed what looks like a manufacturing defect, despite it's very tiny.My right hinge isn't aligned with the display lid, compared to left hinge and it sticks out from the lid less than 1mm. The left hinge doesn't sticks out.Furthermore, when I open the display lid sometimes (usually when I close the display totally) I can hear a very faint noise coming from the right hinge.Could this lead to breaking itself in the immediate future? Can this cause the display glass to break because of its misalignment?I'd like to avoid to send it to service because I need the laptop for work, only in the case it doesn't cause any problem in the future.I've attached some images examples and a video with the faint sound when opening it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2j6u3jpL6M left hinge from top  left hinge from side (the good one) right hinge (assumed to be defective) from the topright hinge (assumed to be defective) from the side. It sticks out about < 1mm on the top part

I just received the new version of the x360 and the battery won't charge and the charger seems like it was already used.  The packing on the charger was already open and when the charger cable moves it cuts off the computer since the batter won't charge.  I worked with support and at first they said it was the power cord then they said I will need to send it to a hp repair shop.   Really I don't think so, either they need to send me a new one or just refund my money, there are other options out there.

Was a new version of the Kaby Lake 13.3 Spectre x360 convertible released around April 2017 that supports the stylus? I have an original Kaby Lake 13.3 x360 purchased Feb 2017 and couldn't get the active stylus to work. Tech support said that the 13t-wx00 product W9A93AV doesn't support the stylus. Now I see that a stylus is furnished free with what appears to be the exact computer I purchased. I have been unable to get an answer from technical support as we have difficulties communicating. Does anyone know if the stylus is supported on my Spectre? I returned my original HP active stylus after tech support said they don't work even though the advertising at the time showed people using a stylus. Now they are giving one away free and I don't understand???? Can I update my convertible to work with the stylus? It's frustrating as I purchased the unit thinking the stylus would work and now feel cheated! I guess that's what I get for buying a brand new product.

The battery life on the Spectre x360 that I got two months ago is absolutely dissapointing. Running the default installation of Windows, I'm lucky to get 3.5 hours of battery life using the HP Recommended powerplan while browsing the internet on a stable WiFi network. I have been working with this computer for two months now and after two hours I have to plug it in. Is there anything that I can do to fix this issue or would my best bet be to contact HP directly? I bought this laptop solely based off of the claims that it could get up to 12 hours on battery and the fact that I'm lucky to see a third of that is upsetting.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 with power options set to "Energy Saver." Is this normal/expected battery life for this configuration? Thanks,Darren David

Answer:Poor battery life on new x201T w/ 8-cell battery

That's not very good. My 4 cell battery gets 2.5 - 3 hours with typical use (wifi on, OneNote, firefox, screen backlight set to 9).My 8 cell battery gets around 6 hours under the same conditions. Video playback can kill those numbers though.

So I reinstalled Vista the other day, and even before that a bit, my battery life was simply terrible. At one time, I was able to get 5 hours maximum. Now, I can (at max) get 2 hours and 15 minutes out of a 9 cell battery. There was a previous topic on this forum, but like many other topics in the Lenovo forums, the topic was deleted. Nearly everything that I've searched for regarding problems with my thinkpad, I have found a topic that linked here, but was since deleted. Very annoying.   So, I have power manager 2.41a. The battery is correctly listed,  (86 Wh Li-Ion). I powercycled it one night, and it changed to 3 hours, but it went back down to 2. I should be getting at least 5, but I've heard reports of people getting 10 hours. I'm no where near that! I'm on power saver setting, and my brightness is at about half. I have all the latest drivers, System Update didn't return anything.  Also, my switchable graphics has stopped working, as it has with plenty of other people. Any word on when a fix for this will be out? It's disappointing to spend $1400 on a laptop, only to have key features stop working. My first experience with Lenovo has not been a good one so far. I thought these things were supposed to be rock solid? That's why I bought it... the keyboard on this one sucks, it's matte instead of rubberized. It's plastic everywhere.... Why spend a premium on something that gets me the quality of an HP or a Dell? Why not spend half the price? &n... Read more

Answer:T400 Battery life very poor. 9 cell battery.

Okay, a couple of things. First to address your battery life. If you are using the latest ATI Switchable graphics drivers then do this: Start -> Run -> type 'MS Config' hit enter. Go to the start up tab and uncheck the following:  igfxpers.exe; igfxtray. For whatever reason, the new ATI switchable graphics driver when on integrated mode hangs the processor causing it to use 50% of the CPU resources. I found my power usage went from 14-16 watt draw back to 8-9w draw. Next for the switchable graphicsdo this: Lenovo just released Power Manager 2 on 1.5.09. So far, I didn't see it available on the Auto Update utility but I found it when browsing the downloads page. So me being OCD about having the latest versions of software/drivers, I decided to download it. After the install, I found that my switchable graphics wasn't in the left click menu as it always has been. I right clicked and did not see it there either. Remembering what I did for the clean install (I went back to factory install), I did the following steps.Restart computer -> go into BIOS and select Discrete graphics only. Let windows start and re-install the drivers. Did another restart to ensure functionality. Then I went back to the BIOS and selected Integrated only. I let windows start, and again it had to re-install the drivers. Once this was done, I entered the BIOS again and put the display to OS detect function and booted windows normally. Thinking I had it fixed, I left clicked on t... Read more

My new HP Spectre get very very very hot on the underside when operating for only a short time.  In addition, it has lost battery life.  It now only gets about 4 hours before needing a recharge.  The documentation indicates a battery life of 11+hours.  This is not the case.  The product is only about 2 months old - still under warranty.   Is this a common issue - I have seen reviews of it running warm but this is so hot it appears something is wrong.  In addition, is the loss of battery life related?  And how do we get the battery issue resolved under warranty.

I don't use my Spectre X360 daily but I find it strange that every time I want to use it, the battery seems completely empty. If I power down the device and store it for 5-6 days the system won't even switch on as the battery is dead and power button no longer responds. One time I left it untouched for almost 2 weeks and I could not even get it to charge using the usb-c charger supplied with it. I had to keep it connected to powersocket, wait 10 minutes and then boot and then let it drain below 10% before it would re-charge again when switched off. The powericon showed 15% battery status and connected to mains but kept displaying "....not charging"Hybernation is switched off, the power button is acting as real power down and I have modified energysettings several times but nothing seems to solve my poor battery life. Is this normal behaviour ??? If so... the device is completely useless as it won't even last 1.5 hrs simple browsing behaviour and it goes dead when switched off. A mobile device that needs to be connected to main power all the time is not mobile but acts as desktop. If I would need a desktop I wouldn't have bought an expensive HP Spectre for sure.... How can this issue be fixed ?

I recently purchased my laptop this past April and it has stopped charging.  I thought it was the charger since my guinea pig chewed the mickey mouse cable a bit, so I got a replacement in the mail.  However, replacing the cable did not solve the issue.  The partially chewed cable worked up until the day I installed Windows 10, coincidentally.  I'm just wondering if it's possible that installing Windows 10 could have caused some unkown bug to cause my laptop to stop charging.  I really don't think it's the charger since it is brand new.  Please can anybody help me?  Thank you. P.S. The laptop battery is dead so I cannot turn it on to check drivers or bios.

The exact same thing happened to me. I received a new adapter and power cord from HP, as my Spectre is only 5 weeks old. The new power cord and adapter didn't work and now my laptop won't even turn on. I wish I could help, but I have no idea what to do to fix my own laptop since it won't turn on.

This Spectre X360 is only 6 days old and the battery life is abysmal.  The battery life is comppletely opposed to what HP advertises. For me, the advertised 12.5 Hours of battery life was the key point to buy it. But I can barely get 4 hours of light use. Is this an isolated problem or a common proble with this model. I am really dissaponted. I would like to keep it as I like the rest of it, but the battery, struggling to get barely to four hours is completely unacceptable. HP is misleading customers. This issue is forcing me to return it and look for alternate options. What are the best settings for Better Battery life? I do word processing and light web browsing to do research and the battery life is very dissapointing.

Answer:Spectre X360 13-4103dx battery li is abysmal

Where do you have the screen brightness set? That is the biggest factor. If you lower the brightness you can extend the life significantly. The runtime claims of laptop makers are like gas mileage claims for cars; true, but only under ideal, laboratory conditions rarely achieved in real life.  You are not the only one to complain. I also have a laptop that is designed for long battery life; Lenovo Carbon X1. I get maybe 5 hours and Lenovo claims 8. I am very happy with 5 hours as I have been using laptops long enough to know that claims of "all day" battery life are not realistic.

Hello all, I recently bought the new HP Spectre x360 (Late 2016 Build) and since then I have noticed problems retaining charge after the computer is completely shut down. I exchanged the laptop yesterday for the same model and have also witnessed battery discharge after shut down. The discharge is about 6-8% every 8 hours when it is shut down. The things I have tried:Turn off Fast BootDeactivate Hibernate (deactivates fast boot as well)Battery Check and Calibration (Battery Check came back "Okay")Deactivate selective USB chargingDeactivate USB Charging when the system is off (using BIOS) I was promised that the issue would be fixed if I calibrated my battery by an HP support employee which did not work. I found a prospective solution online that has caused a known battery drain for thousands of HP Users. Many users experienced this odd battery drainage due to the Intel Management Engine Interface (IMEI) Driver but this is purely what users are reporting and may not even solve my problem. Does anyone else have the same issue and have solved it? If so, please give me a hand. Worst comes to worst, I will have to return this laptop. I have spent too much time trying to resolve this issue (probably 6 hours) and am extremely frustrated since you don't expect this type of issue out of a "luxury" laptop nor a new one at that. Thanks! I'm looking forward to hearing from all of you!

hello, I have a brand new HP Spectre x360, and am very happy with it. However, the battery is getting drained when the laptop is shut-off (not in sleep mode, but really shut-off, by using the windows start button). From 100% to 90% in one week time, and even down to 0% if left for some weeks.I'm wondering if this is due to a problem with the battery (or some other manufacturing issue), or if it´s caused by some kind of setting that causing the computer to not completely shut down for example. Could the farst start-up have anything to do with it? Is there any setting I should change?  Would really appreciate your help as this doesn't seem normal for a completely new computer... Thanks!

Question: Poor battery life

This is the second time I upgraded my laptop to Vista from XP, and this time the battery life sucks.
First time, battery lasted about 1-2 hours.
With XP, it's 2-2.5 hours.
Now, it's 30-45 minutes.
How can I improve this life? Or does it improve with time as ReadyBoost and SuperFetch or something settles in?

Answer:Poor battery life

I would first just go through the Power Option settings

Right-Click, the battery icon, and select power options, then select change plan settings for whatever plan, and then select change advanced power settings.

See if you can find something

Answer:poor battery life

Hi loz56,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

One thing I did before was to  download a battery monitor
like this one
Watch out for the discharge rate and take note of it.

I then Perform a clean boot, disabling bloatwares that might be running in the background.
Check the discharge rate again and itwas lessen giving more battery life.

Also it is best to set the Power settings to Power saver, less brightness.
setting the maximum processor state to 99% on battery and plugged in  will help as well.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

I just received my Omen 17" laptop last week!  Really excited.  But, really not liking the poor battery performance, and to exacerbate matters, it's internal.  So, I can't even just swap the battery out for a quick replacement.  My current battery life is approximately 3 hours if fully-charged to 100%.  Help!

Answer:Why The Poor Battery Life?

Hi, With a gamings laptop and 17" screen, around 3hrs life for a battery is a bonus. Many normal 17" laptops won't even go that frar. Regards.

When I got my Spectre about 6 mo ago I go 8-10 hrs on a charge when doing word processing and e-mail.  However that recently dropped to less than 4 hrs.  After spending several hours with HP Support, we could find nothing obviously wrong with the machine.  A look at the Task Manager CPU useage revealed nothing extraordinary and the HP Battery check indicated the battery was "ok".  In preparing to send the machine back to HP, I decided to first try to reimage it, i.e. wipe the disk and reload the operating system.  HP makes this easy to do.  Once the new image was installed I methodically  loaded each of my major applications one-by-one and retested the battery life after each install.  I now get 8-10 hrs of battery life. During this process I did not update any of the drivers.  This suggests that one of the recent driver upgrades is the culprit to my battery problem so I'm now much more cautious in accepting these.  I always do a restore point before proceeding and test the battery life afterwards. Testing the battery life can be done in several ways.  The key is consistency.  The method I use is to edit the power settings so that the screen stays on and the machine remains awake.  I then just let it sit for a while.  I typically see a loss of 10% of battery power per hour.  Prior to the reimage I saw 25-30% reduction per hour.

Hello all, I'm really hoping to get to the bottom of this. When I was on the market for a laptop, I needed one that would have great battery, be light, and be fast - as a result, I purchased a "HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop - 15t touch" -- Product number: P0A58AV_1. I mention the exact name and product number to ensure that if someone from HP sees this they know that I'm referring to the newer model - from 2016.  The computer is fast -- not as fast as I was hoping after upgrading to the i7 with max RAM, but fast enough. It's also light. But the battery is horrible! I travel often and that's why I need a good battery - I just came off a flight yesterday where the laptop went from 99% to 43% after a movie that was a little under 2hrs.  The day before I was working on Photoshop and it lasted about 3.5hrs total. The other day I was simply keeping it on as it was downloading a large file, with brightness down to about 50%, and it lasted 4.5hrs. This is outrageous!  To clarify - I am a very technical user (web developer), and have already done everything I can (within reason) to stretch the battery life as much as possible. Disabled bluetooth and WiFi searching, I keep the brightness at 75% max at all times and 50% when possible, and I also maxed the CPU to 70%. Still, the laptop will not hold more than 5hrs even when not actively working on it, and it will barely hit 4hrs if watching video on it. Furthermore, as I am writing this I only... Read more

My Spectre x360 which I purchased less than a year ago is draining battery when it is completely shut off.  I read another post in this forum that stated the exact same issue but did not see a viable answer.  The answer said to plug the charger into a wall outlet.  That was pretty much the answer.  The issue has nothing to do with plugging the charger to either an outlet directly or to a power strip or any other manner.  The charger charges fine.  No problem there.  But after shutting the Laptop down and try to turn it back on after around 24 hours, the battery has draied pretty much dry.  Now that I see other posts with the same problem, I have to conclude this is a manufacturing defect.  Something somewhere is draining the bettery.  I have no external devices connected to the Laptop when it is shutdown. And please don't suggest to plug the charger into a wall outlet.   Babu.

Recently, my Spectre X360 seemed to be completely flat every time I went to use it. This is despite being turned off (not in sleep mode or any other lazy-shutdown mode). I've had this lappy for probably two years now, but use it only occasionaly, like say, once every two months. With that infrequent use, I do expect some discharge over that time and it usually had some charge left in it as far back as I can remember. Nevertheless, of late, I've been using the lappy a bit more frequently and have noticed it was completely flat after leaving it for just a week or less. So I searched for an answer on this forum and found a couple of threads that went on for pages with "me too" posts and useless cut-and-paste answers from techs (mostly offering software "solutions") which I knew were not relevant. Eventually I found a couple of clues burried deep in the threads that made sense.  They were the 5v USB charging while turned off along with having any USB devices left attached (someone mentioned mouse dongles). Immediatly, I realised that my recently purchased 128Gb Sandisk nub drive, which I have left attached, may have been a contributor. Subsequently, I;1. Now remove the nub drive when the machine is not in use (despit it being designed to be left in all the time).2. Hi guys. I have a problem, I just bought a brand new Spectre x360 and the battery is drainig after perfom a FULL and COMPLETE shutdown (no sleep or hibernate). after 10hs I lost 8% of battery, all drivers are up to date as well as the BIOS. I already had this issue with my Lenovo Yoga 3 11 and after update the BIOS I fixed. I alrady read that this seems to be an issue with W10 and some drivers but not all laptops has it. Guys, any idea??, by the way I already disable the fastboot which seems to be a solution in same cases but non in mine. Thanks!!!

Answer:Battery Drain with Shutdown Computer (Spectre x360)

Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome @santiago3,  When you are using the AC adapter with the HP Spectre x360, please make sure that the AC adapter cable is not plugged into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source. It should be directly into a wall outlet. Computer battery life varies, depending on power management settings, programs running on the computer, screen brightness, external devices connected to the computer, and other factors (even when it is a new purchase). I read that you have already tried to update all of your drivers including the BIOS and disable fast startup.  What do you have connected to the Notebook?Have you tried to turn down the brightness?Have you tried putting the Notebook on a power saver mode? To learn more about how to Improve Battery Performance, please follow the document provided in the hyperlink.  If your notebook computer battery does not Hold a Charge, you can try to troubleshoot the battery to see if it needs to be replaced. Sometimes, all it is is that the battery could need to be recalibrated. There is a document called Testing and Calibrating the Battery. You can use the steps in this document to find out the condition of the battery you currently have and see if it has any suggestions. Using the HP Support Assistant is great be... Read more

Hello. I recently bought Pavilion x360 11, and on pretty much every review site etc. there was written that the full charge should last for approx. 6 hs of browsing internet. I tested it twice just browsing internet, and not even that much because at the same time i was playing on my PC. Both tests ended up in laptop hibernating after 4-4.5hs. I must say that is rather low battery lifetime, specially for me as I bought it for outside use mostly. Can it be defective battery or maybe upgrade to win 10 would work it out for me ? (asking about win 10 because I've read couple general opinions about how it extended their battery lifetime from i.e. 6.5h to 9h ) Any help would be very appreciated, as I have to make a decision if i want to replace the laptop at store or not. Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem with my 15-ba079dx. After a bad customer service I experienced and the weird set up that disallows native admin to make changes to the OS on a desktop, I vowed to never buy an HP again. However, I was lured by a fantastic price on this touchscreen w powerhouse specs for the price after I accidentally killed my beloved Toshiba. Since jump, the battery longevity has been AWFUL. I cannot even watch a full movie; I'm getting 90 min or even less. It made the laptop useless for school, since most classrooms don't have plugs at desks and I wound up carrying a brick all day before even the 1st class finished.

Hi, I've had my HP Envy 15 for abou 1.5 years now, but the battery has never lasted more than 1.5 hours without a charge. This seems awful short for a product that advertises online as 8-9 hours.  I've bought a replacement battery (no change), people always post online that it's related to the brightness settings (mine is set at just about 1/3 bright... ie not bright at all), and I've read about redoing the battery control method in Device Manager.  None of these have had any effect.   There has to be something that can be done to get a laptop to last longer than this.  90 minute battery life doesn't even make it much of a laptop anymore and keeps me constantly locked to a desk.  Any thoughts?  Or any possible batteries that actually work better than this one?

Hey there! So I just picked up my Yoga 3 14 after reading a number of reviews. From what I read people seem to to be clocking up around 7 hours. Since owing the machine I have updated the OS to Windows 10 and installed a few bits and bobs. As I sit here with the screen brightness at 50% Windows tells me that I have 2 hours remaining. Naturally this estimate varies quite a bit but I generally seem to be getting around 3 hours of light use. Running the windows battery health check shows that the battery looks OK so I'm not sure why I seem to be getting less battery life than the revewers, unless Windows 10 is a massive battery hog. Also, I tend to keep the brightness around 50% and the power plan on balanced. Any more Yoga 3 14 owners out there? How does your battery fair?

Answer:Yoga 3 14 i7 poor battery life

Same problem, downgraded it back to 8.1 and same problem. Looks like about 3 hours of battery on this thing, must be a dud.

Have a w520 with 2720QM, 9 cell battery, 8 gig ram and FHD display. I am getting around 3 maybe 4 hours of battery life with the monitor turned all the way down and Power Manager set to Maximum Battery Life... Anyone have any ideas of why I am not getting hte expected 10+ hours? I am getting this same amount of time when WiFi is disabled and I am just watching movies on VLC. I run a SSD (crucial c300) in the ultrabay and the stock 500gig in the hdd bay. But when doing my "movie battery test" i moved the movie to the ssd so I was not using a spinning HDD and got around the same amount of battery life.

Anyone have any ideas of why I am not getting hte expected 10+ hours?Just a thought.... If you are watching movies or are using an external monitor you likely have the NVidia discrete graphics (and associated cooling) running, which will have at least some effect on battery life. I have your same configuration, but have my battery settings at pretty high performance since I am usually on battery only when I am in meetings.  At full charge, the battery icon tells me I have about 5.5 hours remaining.  Never actually ran it that long to know if it's accurate.  Does your actual run time match your battery gauge? Also use Power Manager to verify that your Full Charge Capacity is somewhere close to your Design Capacity.   Assuming the 520 is new, they should be close, or else you got a dud battery.

I've only had my laptop for a little over a year and a full battery only lasts about 1 hour.  I frequently check my battery condition in Power Manager and it says that my battery is in good condition.  I really started to notice a difference in battery life after I upgraded to Windows 7.  Is there anything I can do to improve my battery life? Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer:W500 - Poor Battery Life

are you using the battery in performance mode? This is probably due to the two graphics card been activated, and the Win 7 OS does use more battery power than Vista and Win XP.

It seems that this laptop just doesn't have a very good battery or something is wrong? I've never been able to keep the laptop on for over 45 minutes of use, no matter what I try it seems. And keep in mind I've only had it a few months. Fully charged and simply doing basic web browsing seems to even drain the battery within 45 minutes or so. At first it seems to be fine, and estimates 2.5 hours or so, and slowly goes down, then around 40% it seems to just die and dip to 5% within minutes. Strange thing is it still "estimates 1.25 hours left" with 5%, but the laptop will shut itself down within 1 minute and will not boot again until I plug in AC power? What gives? I've updated to the latest bios last week, video drivers, and the lenovo power management software also.

Answer:g460 Very poor battery life?

Here is a method to recalibrate battery I posted: Post Or set power management to never sleep, never shut down, etc. I just find it easier to let it run down in the bios setup.

hey ya'll -- I've been writing a review on the U330 for a couple days now, and keep getting horrible battery life (horrible in the sense that the rated battery life on lenovo's product page is 3-5 hours, and I keep getting 1.5-3 hours -- others in different forums are getting the same results). Are these batteries bad?  Perhaps the rated batter life is incorrect? I have been testing with BatteryEaterPro (which I realize will result in shorter battery times than the lowest rated time), but I've also just done normal usage (power saver mode, intel graphics, 3/10 brightness) and can only get about 3 hours. (feel free to read more of the review at http://www.jrin.net/2008_09_26/lenovo-ideapad-u330-initial-hands-on-review ) anyone else have this issue?

Hi all,

Am wondering if anyone would be able to help me with this. I've recently purchased a NB520. Its been less than a month but I am already having problems with my battery. The batt life when it's not plugged in is really weak (1-2 hours at most), and I get a message prompting me to replace my battery. Find this really odd for a machine that's new. Any ideas guys?

Cheers, new NB user.

Answer:New NB520 - poor battery life

Yes, 2 hours is a really bad result.
I think you should contact with Toshiba service - maybe they'll exchange the battery?

I'm getting less than 4 hours of battery life on my Thinkpad 13, purchased in Nov. '16. (It may even be less thanthat: yesterday I noted a reading that said it was 93% charged, and had 2:50 remaining.) Is there some sort of system check I can run to figure out what the problem is?

Answer:very poor battery life on Thinkpad 13

Here's a little more information. I just charged it fully, and checked the battery indicator: Once it dropped to 99%, it said that meant "5 hours, 11 minutes" of life -- which seems too short. About 5 minutes later, it said 98%, "four hours." One other detail: not sure if this is relevant: The charger gets very hot to the touch when the computer is charging.

Hello I've had this machine for almost one month now, and I've realized recently that the battery life on my unit is bad, comparing to reviews and charts found on the internet (including users on this site). I've never gotten more than 2.5 hours even on the lowest brightness setting on powersave mode casually browsing on chrome. When I'm on YouTube watching HD vids the most I get is less than two hours.I've ran a battery guage reset a few times now, and it says it's normal. There's about 1% battery wear which leaves me with 54mWh, according to various softwares.I even tried changing the resolution to 1080p as an experiment, and it made no difference whatsoever. Oh, and I also tried disabling Nvidia graphics from the bios, that made no difference either. What should I do? Please help. Edit: It's the i7-4710HQ Model with the 1TB SSHD, if that helps.

The HP spectre x360 is advertised as having up to 12.5 hours of battery life.    I even asked HP.com Sales Rep and Microsoft Sales reps too since they had a hand in building this and are selling it.     I was so excited when I got it until 4 hours later when it died. I updated Windows, updated all drivers and still got around the same time.  I checked the battery and it was in great health. So I set out to maximize its battery life to get the advertised 12 hours. Yet, after taking absolutely extreme measures to extend its battery life to the fullest, I was ONLY able to get 8 hours of battery life. Here's what I did (My laptop is fully updated latest drivers and everything): Generated a Battery Health Report (everything looked good)Used HP's 'Support Assistant' Battery Check and it came back "OK".Turned on 'Powersave Mode' (this dims the screen even at 100%)Reduced the screen brightness to 70% (which really means %50 in power save mode)Limited my use to just one program (Microsoft Edge) with super minor use of a few  other programs.Disabled Cortana.Disabled One Drive sync.Disabled Desktop Slideshow.Disabled notificationsDisabled desktop "Peek" and all window "snapping" functionality.Disabled all auto startup processes services that I knew to be safe to disable. As we have properly understood your issue you are facing issue in battery chekc up: Make sure you have the latest drivers. Especially graphics driver and BIOS. To do this, make sure Windows Update is fresh, and check HPSA for BIOS updates.Screen brightness has the single biggest impact on battery life. Of course, this is all about personal preference, but a couple clicks down on brightness will often help battery a lot, and might even be a bit more comfortable if you?re using for a long time. The apps you?re using can make a big difference. Playing video with the optimized Xbox Video app will give better battery life than other players. Internet Explorer gives better battery life than Chrome. Didn't know where to post this so this was my alternative. I bought my Spectre x360 about two days ago brand new. It seems like a lot of people have the same problem as I do. While the computer is shut down (not hibernating, not sleeping), I will lose about 5-6% every eight hours while off. Battery does not lose charge THAT quickly. I've run the battery health check and everything is okay. I would assume so since this laptop is brand new. Why will HP not take responsibility over this issue? Every single thread I've been in, offer no real solution for this. I will end up returning this product if there is no solution and I hope those who have the same issue do too. When you pay 1,500 dollars for a laptop, you have high expectations for the product so why does this type of issue exist? Upvote so HP knows that they have a problem on their hands or they'll end up sweeping this under the carpet again. Hold them accountable.

4.5 hours is actually very good. The 9 hours is based on some conditions not likely to be duplicated in the the real world. The best thing you can do to make the battery last longer (runtime) is to turn down the screen brightness and turn off bluetooth and wifi if you are not using them.  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01297640

Ever since I upgraded my SP3 to W10 (Clean install), my battery life has probably been cut in half, the fans are always running high, and I'm constantly running low on memory because the system is hogging more than 95% of it. And all I have running is OneDrive and Edge. Sometimes I leave the computer sleeping for a little more than a day and when I try to turn it back on the battery is drained. I have heard that turning off Windows Tips in the settings solves the problem, but it did not work for me.
Also on Edge, every time I search for something in the address bar it gives me an error. So I have to try 2 or 3 times before it finally gives me the results in bing.
Anyone else having these problems?
