Notebook keyboard typing joined letters and caps lock LED no...

Question: Notebook keyboard typing joined letters and caps lock LED no...

HiAs mentioned above.. My notebook started typing weirdly and my caps lock key used to have a white LED light indicator but its not showing suddenly.. (the caps lock key is still functioning)As for the other parts of the keyboard.. when i type ' l ' the letter ' l3 ' would come out.. When i type ' i ' the letter 'oi' would appear.. It is typing joined letters randomly.. Typing ' o ' would be hitting enter and O at the same time.. I've tried almost all the suggestion in the forum but its still not working for me.. caps LED still not working and keyboard still typing weirdly I even formatted the whole notebook totally without recovery and downloaded the latest software from HP.. Still not working.. Any suggestions? Would it be a hardware issue? Thank you for taking your time to look into my problemPS: my laptop is in super duper good condition cheersivan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

when i hit letters in my applications, it says im hitting numbers, and even when i hit the numbers on my keyboard, it starts going "1,2,3,4,5" ect. just from hitting 1 number. for instance when i go on youtube and hit 1 on a video player, its supposed to keep taking me to a certain part of the video, but it just keeps going forward until it restarts and then goes through again. also when i play minecraft and i try changing my settings, if i want to set "move left" to "a" it says i it number 1!?!? i know a good bit about computers, but this is just BAFFLING me, i have looked ALL OVER this website and all of the people that had this problem just had there NUM lock on, and i cant use any applications while this problem is going on, so please, anyone, help me out

Answer:Keyboard is typing numbers instead of letters? (NUM LOCK IS NOT ON)

If this is a laptop see if this helps.

If you're writing numbers instead of letters when you press the keyboard of your laptop and you must hold down the Function key (Fn) to write normally.

This is due to the fact that the digital lock is activated. To solve this, simply press the Fn+Numlk or depending of the model, press the button or Fn + Shift +Numlk

I'm a sloppy typist. I don't know if I hit some key combo or what but I was typing a letter in word pad and suddenly my typing is in all caps. I have used a reg file to disable my caps lock key on this laptop because it gets in my way - a long time ago. I know it cannot be the caps lock key. I do not have a shift key sticking.

I saved the letter, then copied it to Polyedit another word processor, and it still types in all caps. Firefox does not seem to be effected. I even tried rebooting and nothing helped.

Clues?

I have an x61t that when it locks for screen saver password and you have to CTRL ALT Delete the relog back on. the CAPS lock on the onscreen keyboard indicates on but it's not. 1. Log into the tablet.2. The screensaver would lock the tablet.3. Press Ctrl Alt Delete to get to the logon screen.4. The on screen keyboard would show the Caps Lock key as on but it wasn't. If they pressed the Caps Lock key it would then be on.5. The users don't press the Caps Lock key now, even though it is being displayed as on, and they can logon OK. I cannot recreate this problem on another X61tablet and this behaviour happens even when the notebook is in a docking station with an external keyboard.  anybody seen this error before?

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Tecra Z50-A-11C notebook with 3.70 BIOS...

I noticed a strange problem with my notebook. Time to time, when the CAPS LOCK is ON, I can't write in capital letters, when it's turned off, I can write in capital letters. I couldn't find the thing to replicate it.

Is there anyone experiencing a similar issue?
What could be the problem?

Thank you.

Answer:Tecra Z50-A-11C: No capital letters when Caps Lock is on

The keyboard should work as follows:

CAPS LOCK is ON -> capital letters
CAPS LOCK is ON and SHIFT button pressed -> small initial letters
SHIFT button -> capital letters

If this isn?t the case, test the external USB keyboard.
The usage of external USB keyboard might be helpful to discover if the internal keyboard malfunctions.

Hi,

(First of all: I ain't good at English because I come from Holland.)

I own a Satellite A100 PSAA8, it used to be working very well :)
But since a few weeks I have a strange keyboard problem.
I can only type capital letters when caps-lock is off, and I can't type any numbers at all, and a full stop is a: > and a comma is: <
I thought it was a software problem so I formatted the hard disk, then I tried the Toshiba recovery disk.

But it did not work I get a couple of errors with symbol files missing (or something like that) then in the window appears: 0:000 and whatever I am typing it doesn't work. So I grabbed the Windows XP Pro. CD, but when I get to the chapter when I must fill in my serial number, I still can't type any numbers and only capital letters with caps-lock off.

Then I (tried) to install Windows 2000 and still I can't type any numbers, etc.(but the hard disk is empty :S) then I insert a Ubuntu live CD and the keys under ubuntu are working perfect(?). I just doesn't get it. PLEASE HELP!!

Answer:Satellite A100 PSAA8: I can type capital letters when caps-lock is off

Hello Ikke

Believe me it is not easy to say for sure what the problem can be?
Please check if the keyboard is recognized properly in device manager. Be also sure the language settings are the right. So much about possible software reasons for not working keyboard.

It is also possible that there is hardware problem. Maybe is keyboard cable defective or the keyboard controller. It is also possible that keyboard itself is faulty.

In my opinion you should contact authorized service in your country. They can test it with brand new keyboard and see if the keyboard is defective.

I have a Satellite C660 which was working fine this morning. When I returned from work and powered it on, the entire keyboard is not working and therefore cannot enter my login details.
The Num lock and Caps lock are lit.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Answer:Satellite C660 - keyboard is not working but Num lock and Caps lock are lit

Hi

Are you able to disable the CapsLock and NumLock?
Can you access the BIOS pressing F2 while powering up the unit?

If this does not work, I would recommend checking an external USB keyboard.
If the USB keyboard would functions, then this means that the internal keyboard is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Thank you so much for your time.

When switching on, the power button lights up and f12 (wifi light) lights up orange. The caps lock light flashes twice between pauses. The screen does not light up and the computer doesn't seem to respond to anything. I've tried a hard reset to try and fix it but it doesn't seem to have changed anything. It's just over a year old and is used mainly for the internet on trusted sites.

Meanwhile, the light on my caps lock key will start flashing and won't stop. Finally, I just have to push the power button long enough to turn it completely off.  Then I close the lid, open it and turn it back on again. The heat damaged the motherboard. You can try keeping it in the sun. Kind of a substitute for baking the main chipset which sometimes works temporarily to melt the solder connections and get everything flowing again but never lasts very long.  The data recovery did not cause this, by the way, just a coincidence.

This mostly happens when I'm posting on online forums. It has yet to happen when I'm working in Word.

Any ideas anyone?

Hi,

I have an hp laptop and my keyboard is being acting very weird. When pressing almost all the keys, i get a group of letters. For example, when pressing "v" i get "bgv". some of them stopped responding at all. I used to get "1qa" when pressing "q", but now it doesnt even respong. Also, the on-screen keyboard shows that both shifts are pressed.

Can anyone help me with this?

Answer:Keyboard is typing several letters instead of one needed

Try an external (USB) keyboard
If that works without issue, then it sounds as though your laptop keyboard is faulty (dust or moisture)
You could try blowing it out with high compressed air (compressed air cans can be purchased from many electronic or computer tech stores)
But you may need to replace the faulty keyboard

Most of the letters come out ok, but some of the keys writes wrong letters e.g. key with letter 'I' gives '5', 'O' gives '6', etc. And it's not the problem of keyboard layout, it's U.S. English and never been changed to another one. Problem persist in each application including command prompt. OS is XP Pro. Norton didn't detect any virus. Anyone has a clue?

Hi guys,

I just bought a new optical keyboard and mouse (made by kensington and quite cheap). The mouse is fine, but I've got problems with the keyboard. I realised that I was having trouble typing in passwords and things as it was doing strange things, so I decided to test it out in notepad. I realised that although certain keys are typing fine (mainly the outside ones), some of the inside ones are doing very odd things. e.g. the 'y' key shuts down my computer, the 'n' or 'm' key seems to type about 3 different letters and it goes on, certain keys open up new windows, and other functions in windows start happening, and I can't figure out why. Any ideas?

My mother's computer started having issues with the keyboard, recently. I'll say it how i see it, but obviously, i might be missing something.

When typing the letter q on the keyboard, "qt" comes up. w and e are fine, r types "re". This happens with two different keyboards. I brought by my (this) keyboard, and it worked fine, but i only tried for a minute. On her computer, i tried both a ps2 and usb keyboard (native for both, no adapters).

Right now, if i try to login, when i click on a user, it fills in the password field (as if there was a stuck key) and tells me the caps lock is on. Capslock button does turn it off, but it did not look like backspace was doing anything. The bios did not complain of a stuck button. Safe mode (i happened to try with networking) has the same issue. No issue using the keyboard before windows loads.

Using teamviewer from my computer to hers is tough. I can hit capslock with sometimes works, keys sometimes work and sometimes don't, if it types in two letters, i can use the mouse to highlight one (to overwrite) when continuing. With a lot of effort and time i can login. Clicking icons on the desktop does not work, from the start menu does.

I tried hitting the helper menu to get the on screen keyboard for logging on. The first time i tried, it came up and worked. Now the button doesn't do anything.

I went into Device Manager (early on, when i could still do things) and deleted the keyboard. It made me reboot, but didn't se... Read more

Answer:Keyboard typing wrong letters

Just tried again via TeamViewer. I can delete in the password field, but it acts as if there is a stuck key. (This is different than the last time i tried.) The form with the option for the on screen keyboard now does come up, but the keyboard is an empty frame and the mouse cursor (while over the frame) shows the circle of waiting.

This is weird. It's like Schrodinger's cat or something. The problem changes every time i look at it!

This has been happening every other day for me recently where I will be typing and my keyboard will randomly start typing the wrong letters or pressing certain keys will open the menu bar, but my computer to sleep or just type completely random letters. I've googled it once before and found that I should change the settings in control panel > regional and language settings which worked for me once but lately it doesn't.

I've even purposely added a foreign language and then re added my normal one (UK) but hasn't helped, it was already on the proper settings anyway. The last two times it has happened was on the night and left my keyboard unplugged, the next day I plugged my keyboard back into the tower while the computer was still loading up and it has been working fine now and did the same again last night. I don't know why it does this? Also google suggested a FN key but my keyboard doesn't have one.

I am about to embark on writing a few french (and German) letters on my computer at home which has as you can expect a British keyboard. Is there any way that I can change the language over to French or German standards so that it picks up and recommends where words and accents should go without me having to "insert symbol" or do strange letter contributions? Does this make sense?Or do I need to buy a French and German keyboard to get the accents in?Thanks!

You need to load the French and German Spell checkers. Type as normal then do a spell check and point the spellchecker to the relevant language. It will change them for you.

Did you set your keyboard language to US or UK.
Go into the control panel and click Regional and Language Options, click the Languages tab, click Details button, then check in the box to make sure English (United Kingdom) and under Keyboard you have United Kingdom. If this is what you prefer.

I have had my del laptop for about a year and a half. everything has ben fine, but earlier today, my cat walked acros the keybaord, and now, as you may be able to se, it won't alowe me to type double leters or even backspace. i've given up trying to corect my typing so i apologize for the erors. i did some research and found some people with similar prolbems, but they were al with newer laptops. ive never had this problem before and i am prety sure it's the result of my cat probably hiting a key or something. regardles, i do not know how to fix it. i cant scrol using the aros, type properly, or even backspace. i can't even highr my volume. can anyone help me?

Answer:laptop keyboard not typing double letters or

First try System restore to any date before the incident (preferably a few days or a week). If that does not work, uninstall the keyboard in device manager and restart, that should allow windows to reinstall the drivers. The cat probably hit a strange combination of keys like ctrl+Shift+something else and you could look all day and not find the options to correct it directly. One of these should help. In the future, put the system into sleep if you walk away for a few minutes (or close the lid), Hibernate if for longer, and shut down for hours or overnight. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Answer:Satellite C50-A-1DV - keyboard typing multiple letters

Connect the external USB keyboard and check if the same ?double letters? issue would appear using such external USB keyboard.

If the double letters symptoms will not appear using external keyboard, then the internal notebook keyboard must be faulty.

This would mean that the internal keyboard must be replaced to fix the issue.
But if the double letter will appear even using the external keyboard, then the keyboard controller (part of the motherboard) could be affected.

Not quite sure if this could be fixed by BIOS update but in case your BIOS is not up to date, try to update the BIOS.

Otherwise I would recommend you to contact Toshiba authorized service provider for an check.

Yesterday the computer was fine, but today the some of the keys on the keyboard are typing numbers and letters at the same time.

For example, when I type "a" it shows up as "a1". These are the keys its doing that on:

a1 d3 f4 8i j7 k8 l9 9o 0p 1q 4r s2 7u 2w

I've tried:
Ctrl + Shft,
updating the driver
System Resore from a week ago
booting in safe mode (still had the same problem)
running a scan from Microsoft Securtiy Essentials (Came up clean)
Can anyone help? I haven't spilled anything on it

Answer:Keyboard typing numbers and letters at same time.

That can be a sign that your keyboard has failed. Now I have to ask this (there is a reason I ask but will go into more detail if the answer is yes)Do you happen to have Xfinity/Comcast as your internet provider?

My laptop keeps typing numbers as opposed to letters on certain keys.

I have run my antivirus programme and it is clear ? I am running Windows XP.

Any ideas as to what to do? I have checked the languages and all seems ok there. I have run my spyware and privacy guardian. All reports clear.

Basically, I am now stuck as to what else to try........

Hope someone can help.

Answer:Keyboard typing numers, not letters on certain keys

Hi,

Many laptop keyboards have a section which can be used for numeric data entry only.

These keys are normally just a block of the main QWERTY keyboard and accessed by using a Function key.

You have probably got the keyboard into this "mode"

Well about a week ago my laptop keyboard started to act funny when I tired to backspace random signs, or random actions would happen, when I tried to use the space bar it wouldn't give me a space it might give me a d or a / or c, n and when I pressed enter it wouldn't work either then a few days ago the letters started not to work either. They all started to do random things like H might disconnect my Internet or it might Brighton the screen and I have tried every single thing I read about and nothing sometimes my keyboard works perfectly fine and sometimes it gets crazy, I scanned my laptop to see if it was a virus but nothing, I looked to see if it was the keyboard not working but the computer said that the devise was working perfectly fine. That is most likely a virus, you need to run a full scan with your antivirus and make sure it isn't compromised. I would also recommend you move this to the malware forum, then you will get it touch with people that are certified to help you with this.

Hello,on my T42p as well as on the 60p I had a utility or different keyboard driver, that delayed the F1-Key and the Caps-Lock Key. This prevented me from undesigned uasge and was really helpful for me.Unfortunately actually I cant find that patch, but I'm pretty sure, it was provided by LENOVO / IBM. Anybody out there, who can help me to find this?Is it possible to have the same on my new X230 Thinkpad? What has to be done? ThanksMichael

Hello,

I am having a strange problem. I have a laptop and a wireless keyboard. When I hit the Caps Lock button on my laptop keyboard it freezes all the other keys and I am unable to undo the Caps Lock or type anything. However, with my external keyboard I can turn off the Caps Lock and everything goes back to normal. Any clue what could be going on here?

Thanks

Answer:Caps Lock freezes keyboard

My guess is that this is an OS issue where it's getting confused between the built-in keyboard and the wireless keyboard. This could be an issue with driver used for the wireless keyboard, but it's not a hardware issue.

I look at the keyboard when I am typing and not at the monitor, so it is annoying, after I have unknowingly pressed the CAPS LOCK key, to look up and see that my work is in uppercase. I am sure that I have read, somewhere, that an audible warning can be fixed to a keyboard's CAP LOCK key.

Am I right?

Hello,

I have 2 problems and would love to hear your thoughts. (Bold)
Before couple weeks ago, my mouse started to act weird, like it stops moving for couple second and I hear the sound of a new device plugged in then it goes back to work, afterwards ... it stopped going back, a restart was a must for it to continue working EVEN THO the mouse lights were still on.

In few days, the keyboard of the laptop it self (built in) stopped typing some letters (back-space, enter, D, I), I've booted into a portable OS and the keys weren't working too, I assume it's hardware problem.

I went and bought new mouse and an external keyboard, the same USB problem that happened with the old mouse happened, I thought it could be some drivers or some software interupting, I formatted my PC and the problem still persists! BUT I do not remember the USB disconnecting or any sort when the windows was FRESH and not connected to the internet (were some drivers could be installed through windows itself).

Laptop is N53SN ASUS Laptop.

- Built-in keyboard: any thoughts? And what shall I do about it? Replace or is there something I can do other than replacing?
- USB disconnection, the lights still work on both keyboard and the mouse when they disconnect, I have disabled the "Power management setting" that makes the PC turn off the USB ports for power-saving.

Thanks, and sorry if I missed any needed information, it's my first topic.

Answer:USB ports disconnecting / Keyboard stopped typing some letters

Answer:Keyboard on my Satellite C55-B803 is typing double letters

Does the same issue happen if you would use external USB keyboard?

If external USB keyboard would work properly, the double letters problem is related to the internal keyboard malfunction.
Then there is just one solution: keyboard replacement.

Thanks, Clare

Answer:Re: Equium's keyboard has suddenly stopped typing some letters

Hi

Looks like a keyboard malfunction...
In my opinion you should contact the ASP technician in order to replace the keyboard.
The point is that it?s not possible to replace the single buttons... of course you can replace the key caps but nit the full button...

Therefore a keyboard replacement would be necessary in order to solve this problem.

Hello. I have just received my Y700 a couple weeks ago and have noticed that while im typing it intermittently types double letters. It iis not all the time, but as you can see it just happened. It happens more when i am typing full words and sentences quickly, and not while trying one letter at at time trying to provokke it to happen. I had hoped after all windows updates were finished it would fix itself. it is getting quite annoying to have to correct everything I type. It is a brand new laptop so not to happy about this. Has anyone else with this laptop experienced this? I have updated all the drivers and seems to happen in any program i have tried.  If anyone has any insight to whether this is a hardware problem or some sort of software/driver problem, please let me know.  thanks

This is happening to me, too, and it's driving me crazy. All drivers are up to date and it happens no matter what program I use. It does not seem to be restricted to any particular key or keys. Please let me know if you figure it out!

Ok, so I had Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, but I wanted Professional because I heard it takes advantage of the dual core thing when Home doesn't, so I installed Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition 2005 and then upgraded to Service Pack 2. I didn't do anything on the computer before upgrading to Service pack 2, except register the computer and things, which I found out my problem. When entering my Email, instead of the @ sign coming up, the " sign came up.. here is a list of the keys that shouldn't be coming out when the button(s) is/are pressed(Note, I have an American Keyboard and an American copy of Windows):

Is there anything known to fix this? Because this is getting very annoying, and I just want my keyboard to be normal lol.

Hi, everybody!

Can anyone help me solving these problems with caps lock key?

*1st problem:*
In my Toshiba Satellite L50-A-1F2 the led on the caps lock key is always on.

*2nd problem:*
I have made some test using MS Word:
when caps lock is not active, I can write without problems.
when caps lock is active, I have problems with some keys (all in the same "column"): 3, D, E, C.
When I press:
3: I get the symbol "-"
D: the cursor moves to the line below
E: I get the ? or the TM symbols; sometimes it activates Intel Graphic Panel
C: the cursor moves to the begin of the first line.

Thank you in advance for you help!

Answer:Caps Lock & Keyboard error - Satellite L50-A-1F2

Usually the CAPS LOCK button function could be enabled and disabled pressing the same button once again.
If this isn?t possible, I?m afraid this could be a hardware problem.

But new Toshiba notebook?s support special feature called ?special function key mode?.
This mode allows you to use the FN keys without pressing the additional FN button.

I don?t know if this mode could affect the CAPS LOCK functionality but its definitely worth a check.

However, I would recommend you to connect external keyboard and to check if the same CAPS LOCK problems would appear. In case the external USB keyboard would work properly, the CAPS LOCK issue is related to internal keyboard malfunction.

If so, carefully open the Keyboard ( if it is an external Keyboard) and try to clean and diagnose the problem, It should not be a serious problem.
But if it is a laptop I recommend not to open it if you had not do this before .

When my wife tries to log in to her computer, it gives her a message stating that her caps lock key is on, but she can't turn it off...I'm nowhere near the laptop so I'm relaying this info second hand. There is a triangle with an exclamation mark and it says "Caps lock is on." She says when she clicks the message, it tells her to access the on-screen keyboard, but using the mouse to turn of caps lock there doesn't work either.

She also just informed me that the caps lock key is on for everything...firefox, word, notepad etc, so I assume it's a keyboard issue, not a log in issue. When she presses shift, it goes to lower case. I had her go to control panel, region and language, keyboards and languages, hit the change languages button to open text services, opened the advanced key settings, and the "press the CAPS LOCK key" choice was in fact selected, so I don't know what to try next. Maybe to enter safe mode to see if the problem exists there too? But I don't know how to get into safe mode on her computer, and neither does she, apparently. F2 seems to be the bios from her description and F12 seems to be the boot menu, but no safe mode selections...only drive choices. Her laptop is an Acer Aspire 5534...that's all I know...for now.

Edit: She entered into safe mode and the caps lock is still on. Keyboard issue?

Never heard of this one. if you've tried another keyboard that you know works ok. Try going to Control panel/System, click on the + keyboard, then rite click, then remove keyboard from system. Turn comp off, leave a few mins, turn back on, comp should find new hardware (keyboard) and re-install it.

Hello all! So I looked around the forums for an answer before I posted, and I found a topic that was about this same problem. The person finally solved the problem by system restoring their laptop to before September 19th. I did this and disabled automatic update installation, and I was fine. Then yesterday my dad was using my laptop to look something up. Apparently he thought it would be "helpful" to install any updates I had, and he updated my laptop before he gave it back. Today the problem came back, where I'll be typing and my keyboard will decide to give me numbers instead of letters. I tried another system restore, but it didn't list any days before the beginning of October as options, no matter how hard I looked, so I can't possibly restore to before September 19th. Is there any way I can get rid of this problem, or did my dad just ruin my laptop?

This happens when using an external USB keyboard and monitor.  Our Yogas do not have NUMLOCK function on the laptop itself.  Any help solving this mystery would be appreciated! thank you

Hi Redr,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with mistyping the letters on your Lenovo Yoga.

Please let us know is the system is Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga or Lenovo Ideapad Yoga?
Check with booting the system into safe mode and check if the issue persists in that also.
Check with uninstalling all keyboard adapters from device manager.

Hope this helps!

Hi there. I'm an owner of a 2016 Dell XPS 13. It's a wonderful machine except for some issues I'm running into remapping the Caps Lock with Ctrl.
I'm a developer and I by far use Ctrl way more than Caps Lock, so over the years I have grown used to remapping the key. Right now I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 and through Gnome Tweaks > Typing there's a few ways to remap or swap the Caps Lock key.
For the most part, it works just fine. However I have run into some weird issues.
* Certain key combinations just aren't registered. Such as Shift-Ctrl-2, Shift-Ctrl-W, Shift-Ctrl-S, and Shift-Ctrl-X (using the physical Caps Lock remapped key). I noticed this when some keyboard mappings weren't recognized. They work just fine with the original Shift-Ctrl-key but when I remap Ctrl, nothing is happens. I can also test this out in Ubuntu's console by running the `xev` command.
* Sometimes Ctrl-whateverkey sticks and repeats indefinitely, even when I pull my fingers from the keyboard. One example I randomly run into is Ctrl-S which I do throughout the day to save a document.
I've searched the internet, and I've made sure my BIOS is fully updated through the Windows partition and the dell update utilities, but I haven't found any fixes to this.

I have just done a fresh install of Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo Yoga 2 11.

Ran a Bios update, and numerous Lenovo driver software updates and to no avail the Caps Lock and Windows button do not work. They work perfectly on the on-screen keyboard but not on the QWERTY. Wireless Keyboards work fine so there is a fundamental issue with the built-in QWERTY keyboard.

I've exhausted many fixes including registry edits but am at a lose now. Lenovo is offering little to no help other than to return to base for repair which will no doubt cost, when l would like to fix the issue myself.

Any suggestions?

When i push the Caps Lock button on my keyboard, there is no response for a few seconds. I have to wait a few seconds before I can start writing. Unbelivable! This I have never experienced on any pc in 35 years! Is there a fix for this problem?

When Caps Lock is on and I am typing into a Word document, I get the sense that keyboard keys are harder to press. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Thai,

There is nothing in standard computer keyboards that could cause the keys to be harder to press when Caps Lock is on. Of course a standard typewriter could do such a thing but I assume you are talking about a computer keyboard.

I'm pretty baffled by this one. I don't know if its malware of some sort, but the symptoms sure seem like it.

I am using a relatively new Toshiba laptop with Vista. Now and then, the caps lock will do the opposite of what its supposed to, i can't type periods (only ">"), I cannot capatalize certain letters (mostly commonly "N"), and when I try to highlight a url...or a file in windows...it highlights all of them. Additionally, when I load up windows, all of my file icons have shrunk. Without me asking, the FILTER KEYS dialog box comes up...so i'll click yes or no...but then it comes up again and again.

Then all of the sudden....the problems go away. The keyboard works perfectly fine...as does windows. Then at some seemingly random time, they come back again.

What really confuses me though, is that I have now scanned the computer with AntiVir, Kapersky Online Scanner, Super-Anti Spyware, and MalwareBytes...and not a thing comes up.

I have read that to stop symptoms sort of like this, you can just shut off filter keys....but I did that...and it doesn't seem to change anything.

If it is not a virus or malware, I wonder if it could be a bug in windows. I installed a number of language packs and updates shortly before this starting happening.

Thank you :major

Answer:Vista: Caps lock inverted, no periods, keyboard acting weird.

I had a similar problem because my PC was bought in Belgium and came originally with an AZERTY keyboard so i was not able to set the language to English, at a later time i changed to a QWERTY keyboard but had to change language settings.
If you have French or German installed it could be the problem.
Try un-installing the language packs one at a time and see if it stops.

Good evening to you all, i'm hoping that when i click on the "publish your thread" link..it wont say that this is spam, as i'm begiining to get mad about all these spam filters that are stopping LEGIT posts, when help is really needed.
Right now that ive got that off my chest. Here is my problem. I've just purchased a brand new logtitech MK320 keyboard, amd mouse, (both wireless)..and ive just noticed that there is no caps lock, or number lock indicator. The caps lock indicator is very essential and I thought that MOST keyboards nowadays have a caps lock indicaot as standard, any suggestions for this please?? is there any software that can be downloaded please??
many thanks
Jules

Answer:logitech MK320 wireless keyboard and mouse...no caps lock indicators!!!

I have the LX710 wireless keyboard. This does not have the indicators you mention on the keyboard.
If your keyboard is similar the indication appears as a green message on the screen when the keys are operated, but last only seconds. It will say whether on or off.

I have a new HP Envy 17t laptop, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz, 16GB RAM, Intel(R) HD Graphics 620, NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 4GB, 1TB HDD. Spent Christmas day updating Windows and installing some basic software (Firefox, Chrome, Java).  Since then, randomly the keyboard becomes completely unresponsive, with the Caps Lock blinking 5 times slow and 3 times fast, then repeats.  The Wireless Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 also losses internet connection.  Reboot seems to reset everything, but eventually it happens all over again.  Could happen immediately, after a couple of minutes, or couple of hours so haven't been able to figure out what triggers it. I've been through the system event logs and (although there are some errors) nothing terribly obvious or uncommon according to Google (see examples below).  I've tried updating the drivers and the BIOS.  Didn't work.  I then reverted every single driver from the HP Product page for the laptop back to the original state.  Didn't work.  Went through the HP Recovery Manager to reset the OS.  Working long enough to type this message, but have little confidence at this point the error won't reappear.  My hope was driver issue since the first day or two it seemed to be fine so thought it was a Windows or other driver update that set it off, but also have little confidence based on all the updates/reversions I attempted. Other than another HP forum pos... Hello, I am hoping someone could help me with this issue. I am not sure if I am posting in the right section of the forum so forgive me if i am not. I am using a compaq laptop with windows 7 for an OS. The G, H, 8, and backspace keys decided to stop working. For some reason the only way to get any of those buttons to work is if you put on CAPS lock and hold shift. Then you can use those keys. Im not sure if any other keys have been affected as of yet. Ive tried to google for a solution, which normally helps me fix any computer issues I come accross. So far I can only find the reccomendation to hold the function button and press numlock, and its supposed to remove the, "sticky keys." I am not quite sure what exactly the sticky keys are but I didnt think it was the problem here, and the laptop doesnt seem to have a function button anyways. I have seen the option to turn on sticky keys when holding shift on other computers or tapping shift 8 times, I dont know if it was turned on or if sticky keys cause certain keys to not work unless you hold shift while CAPS lock is on, but if this sounds like something you can help with please advise me of any suggestions. I appreciate any time you take to help or even if youve read this far. Thank you

Answer:Certain keyboard keys not working unless you press caps lock and hold shift?

First thing you do is get a canned air and clean out the keyboard... slowly, carefully, then do it again with the laptop upside down. That rules out the most common cause... dirt, dust, and debris.

Factory o/s Vista Home + recovery CD
Faults occurred sometime after installing wireless printer. Computer left unattended. Son heard lots of beeping.
Caps lock worked but text was inverted which also resulted in no numbers. Selecting a file from a list resulted in all files above being selected.
Many things tried, restored to previous point, keyboard checked with MS diagnostic tool OK. Eventually keyboard stopped working (same with external USB keyboard) and it was impossible to restore using Recovery disc.

Paid to have system restored to Factory settings.
Memory and HDD checked and refitted. On final update, no 20 of 27 - bleeping and small Filter Key window appeared and kept on appearing 10/20 times during updating. Still both problems occurred.

Purchased new HDD and Win 7 upgrade
Installed XP pro sp2, could not type numbers in product key
Clean installed Win 7, Caps lock inverted and no numbers with Keyboard, USB keyboard and On-line keyboard. Again all files highlighted.

System Trouble Shooting ? No changes or updated necessary.
System Restore ? Error 0xC0003005
In Safe Mode ? removed Norton leaving MS net 4, MS Silverlight, NVDIA driver.
Wireless mouse works.
Filter Key window appears sometimes.
Action Center ? Richo memory stick controller incompatible, no card reader driver.
Can access msconfig but not mskey or msreg

Answer:200n Keyboard - Caps Lock inverted = no numbers + all files highlighted

Thought I had the problem solved last night. Started up this morning, it still did not work. Two googled posts said remove any other languages and 2nd keyboard attached does not isolate the main keyboard. Control - Language - Change keyboard - no other languages except English, Press Cap Lock selected. - Advance Key settings - Change Key Sequence to Not Assigned.Control - Easy Access - Change Keyboard - All unticked. Today, I removed the keyboard as shown in the service video.  Attached a USB external keyboard. Start up - No Problems.Replaced the keyboard, problems reappeared. It is difficult to imagine that the keyboard is at fault. I did replace the one on my son's 200n as some of the keys stopped working due to over use gaming. I used a American part as it was half the price of a similar UK part.

I am looking for a way (on windows xp and ubuntu) to remap keys when I hold down caps lock (ideally) or toggling between 2 layouts by tapping caps lock.

Basically I want I K J L to be mapped to the arrow keys. Any ideas?

Thanks,

This is killing me.
When in word documents or typing in browsers, my laptop keyboard is perfectly fine, but when I'm in a game or certain other programs (like typing in Pandora, the internet radio) my keyboard (all the numbers, letters, and punctuation keys), when hit, will display numbers. No matter what key is pressed the first press gives me a "1," the next a "2," and so forth until "0" which is when it goes back to "1." I can't play anything and have to copy paste into Pandora's typing field. Oddly, when I hit CTRL-V to paste it still registers. CTRL-random number would not paste, so something is (I think) changing my letters into numbers after the letter registers.
I tried to do all the Num-lock and scroll-lock stuff but it didn't work.
AVG Free's scheduled scan turned up nothing.
I'm currently scanning with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot S&D. Unhackme says there is no Trojan on my computer.
I temporarily fixed the problem previously with a system restore, but it did not last.
Someone please help!

When I 1st boot up, any of my numbers keys or letter keys type only numbers.  No matter what key I hit 1st, the number 1 appears.  The 2nd keystroke, no matter what key I hit types the number 2.  This keeps on going until when I hit the 10th keystroke, 0 appears.  On the 11th keystroke 1 appears again and the whole sequence starts over.  If I hit the shift key, then I get [email protected]#$%^&*() and it starts all over again.  I can turn the Numeric Lock and Caps Lock on and off - the green light lights up when tuned on, goes off when turned off. The weird thing I discovered is if I hibernate the computer by either closing the lid or pushing the Fn and F4 (hibernate) key, then wake it up after a few seconds, the keyboard is back to working normal. Any ideas on what might be going on? Thanks!

Answer:Keyboard Typing Only Numbers - Numeric Lock Is Off

Hello,

I cannot say I have heard of this issue before (I'm not even sure which model/machine type of ThinkPad you are using) but I am wondering if the problem might be due to an external USB device like a keyboard being plugged into the computer.  If you start the ThinkPad without any other USB devices plugged in, does that make any difference?

Does the problem occur if you log in as a different user, or boot from a Linux Live CD?

Regards,
