External USB Drive with BitLocker To Go Encryption Accidently Formatted

Question: External USB Drive with BitLocker To Go Encryption Accidently Formatted

Hi,

My external hard drive (2TB Toshiba USB 3.0) with BitLocker To Go encryption was accidentally formatted using Windows ?Quick Format? option. My PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I do have the following details in relation to the BitLocker encryption for this drive;
- BitLocker Recovery Key
- Full Recovery Key Identification
- BitLocker Password

Is there any way to restore the external drive to the ?pre-format? state so that I can recover/access the data?

The drive is in a good health, ? always removed safely by ejecting from notification area and chkdsk has no errors, ? unfortunately data wasn?t backed up as I was in process of migrating to new PC and accidentally deleted the master back-up .

Any help or suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an older Laptop that operates on  Windows 7 Ultimate,I have the Bitlocker Drive Encryption on and encrypted for Drive C:   I now started the process of encrypting my external usb hdd Drive E: which has a long way to go for it's large
size. During the encryption I needed to disconnect it so I paused the encryption like it says to do before removing or changing any files on it. I then plugged my drive into a newer laptop I have that operates on Windows 10,. I was prompted for the Bitlocker
Drive Encryption Password screen like normal just like on my Windows 7 laptop so I enter the password and it was correct and it began the encryption process again. When I finished with what I needed to do on the Windows 10 laptop I paused the encryption again
and disconnected the drive. I am now back on my Windows 7 Ultimate OS and plugged the drive in, Bitlocker Encryption Password Screen comes up again and I entered my password but now for some reason it's saying the password is incorrect?  "But It's
not incorrect",is there a reason why this has happen and a way to fix it? My second issue is that I have the recovery key written down on paper but on the fifth line of the eight lines that makes the recovery key I left out a number, did not write it correctly,
there for I cannot just reset my password using the key and get back to normal again. Any way to find the lost number to the key? As I do have the rest of it written correctly please help tha... Read more

So I had the power go off while I was running bitlocker (to go?) on my external hdd.
I was not able to pause it before this happened.
I was also running BL on an internal drive.

Both were interrupted.
I was able to resume and finish the internal drive.
I was Not able to resume the external.

The BL application just stop responding when I try to resume/unlock the disk.
It also seems I can't restart the machine normally when BL is trying to unlock the drive.

I read somewhere on the ms support site that even with power failure, resuming is possible.
This might have only applied to an internal drive.
I do recall seeing the pause button for the external, with a note that I needed to pause to stop in case of data corruption or something like that.

Is there a way to recover my external?

Thoughts:
Do I need to let the program "not respond" for the same time or maybe longer than the time it spent encrypting it?
Could I remove the drive and make it an internal?

Answer:Power failure during external disc encryption with BitLocker

i am having a similar problem, except mine in an internal HDD, it refuses to unlock with my password or my recovery key so i am locked out of the drive, i have posed this dilemmea and await replies that actually help, my post is located here

While using BitLocker Drive Encryption feature, i selected the settings for using the USB to store the security key. But, once I restarted my PC, BitLocker didn't recognized the USB and went into recovery mode.

Can anyone suggest as to why the USB key was not taken into consideration?

Answer:BitLocker Drive Encryption

Windows Vista didn't provided any means by which a user working on Windows XP could access a shared folder of an BitLocker encrypted drive. But, this feature was provided in Win 7 in the form of BitLocker To Go feature.

So, my question is, isn't it hampers the main motive that was behind BitLocker Drive Encryption feature?

Answer:Bitlocker drive encryption

It will not damage the HDD just make sure you save the "Key" in a save place not on the computer (A hard copy on paper and a digital copy on a thumb drive two backups of the key is best) also the Windows OS partition or HDD can not be encrypted using Bitlocker.

Hi,

I have been having some issues when trying to turn Bitlocker on in C:

I have followed the instructions as per this forum to enable a Startup key in gpedit.msc as I dont have TPM which worked.

After following the instructions, Windows Bitlocker asked me to insert a USB to save the startup key to. This appeared to save and then moved onto the next step where I took down the recovery key etc... and finally restarted to make sure my system was compatible before encryption started.

Upon restart, Windows said that it couldnt find a key on the USB drive. After further investigation I found that windows did not save the key to the USB after all even checked as a hidden file. It will save the text file (recovery key) to usb but not the bek file for the startup key.

I have tried this several times but each time it wont save although the system dosent say there has been a problem and moves on to the next stage.

The USB is a 2gb cruzer with the smart drive software removed and re-formatted to NTFS. I have also tried this on other USB drives with no luck and the USB drives work as Iam able to write other things to it?

Any help would be greatly appriciated as I have searched this forum and MS forums with no luck.

Thanks
Marc

Hi,

I ran the manage-bde -status command of my encrypted OS Volume Drive and it shows 100% encrypted.
Does this mean that BitLocker encrypted the ENTIRE drive?

During the BitLocker setup, I did select to Encrypt the Entire Drive instead of the Used Space option.
I just want to double check if my entire OS drive is encrypted or not.
I assume that when it shows Percentage Encrypted as 100% then I guess it did encrypt the entire drive.

Now what if I had chosen to encrypt the Used Space only, then would it still show as 100% encrypted ?
Or am I wrong?

Thanks in advance

Hey guys I have a desktop That has Windows 7 Ultimate edition installed. My parents are having start up issues with the OS. When the OS starts up, Bitlocker Drive encryption Recovery comes up with and option to unlock 2 Drives which is a separate hard drive. it comes up with a recovery key of 4889F7FD. I manually type the key and click the M: Drive which is the recovery OS. It says Error Recovering Disk due to no recovery key. I click Back and it comes up with a different recovery key as F9F25CA2. If both drives have the same password would the recovery key be the same. The bitlocker says I have temparary access but doesnt log me in.

When I go to safe mode, It loads half the files and comes up with the same. Start up recovery cant fix it. when I login to safemode, it loads half the files. Does this sound like a system wipe or can I fix this with a WIndows 7 Disc.

Answer:Bitlocker Drive Encryption OS Start up problem

Hello Zhall, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The key number ID it gives you is only to help you reference what BitLocker Recovery Key is the correct one to enter. I sure hope that you saved or wrote down the actual BitLocker Recovery Key for that drive somewhere in case something like this happens. Without it, you're not going to be able recover the HDD very easily.

Check using the tutorial below to see if you may have the actual BitLocker Recovery Key somewhere, and how to recover the OS drive.

Hello,
I accidently formatted one of my drives which was previously encrypted.
I tried some third party software as "recover my file" but it didn't work.
Later then, I experimented on a formatted (not encrypted before) usb drive to recover files by same software and it did work.
After that, I encrypted the usb drive and then formatted it. Then I tried to recover by same software, but it didn't work. So, it's apparent that it is not possible to recover from a encrypted and formatted drive by a usual recovery software. Is there any
other method that can help me.
Please inform, I'm in a dire need.

Hi?
Have you ever changed a group policy setting? run "gpedit.msc", this will lauch GP Editor, then locate to User configuration\Administrative Templates\Administrative Templates\Hide specified
Control Panel items,
check whether it is enabled, and check whether you have added Microsoft.BitLockerDriveEncryption
in the list.Or you can just right click the hard drive which you want to set up BitLocker, then see whether there's an option "Turn on BitLocker".

Hello,

First off, Bitlocker has never been used on this computer. All its drives have never been encrypted. The problem is that when I open Bitlocker Drive Encryption in the Control Panel there are absolutely no drives listed at all. The area under the heading "BitLocker Drive Encryption - Hard Disk Drives" is completely blank, as is the area under "BitLocker To Go". However, Windows Explorer detects all hard and removable drives just fine.

I have tried the following:

1. chkdsk /r (no problems found)
2. sfc /scannnow (no problems found)
3. rebuilding the MBR with Comodo Cleaning Essentials (which didn't quite like the one I had) after aswMBR found no problem
4. repairing/resetting file and registry ownership and permissions to defaults using SubInACL scripts for registry and Tweaking.com for files. (This did fix a few minor nagging problems I had, by the way)
5. a clean boot
6. anti-malware scans (including several offline rescue CD's like Kaspersky, Comodo, ESET and AVG)
7. creating a new user account with admin privileges and trying from there
8. trying to trace file and registry activity with Sysinternals Process Monitor (but I don't really understand what to look for, or what most the results in the listing mean, good or bad)
9. A repair installation/inplace upgrade after a clean boot (this was a problem)

Hello,
In our organization we have a policy to require Bitlocker flash drive encryption. This is set via Group Policy. I am having an issue on some computers where when they select to encrypt their flash drive for the first time, they get the following error message:
BitLocker Encryption cannot be applied to this drive because of conflicting Group Policy settings.
When write access to drives not protected by BitLocker is denied, the use of a USB startup key cannot be required. Please
have your system administrator resolve these policy conflicts before attempting to enable BitLocker.

Comparing to my laptop which is working, here is what I've gathered:

Same OU/Group PoliciesNo group membershipsSame TPM settings in BIOS and TPM Management ConsoleTried multiple flash drivesDoesn't matter who is logged in. Local admin, Domain Admin, or the user of the machine.
We do not require a USB startup key (obviously) and the policy is set to store the recovery passwords and key packages in AD DS. Another thing is the workstation HD is encrypted and the recovery key is in AD, so that tells me at least at one point it had
a healthy relationship with the DCs.
I am convinced it is not an issue with the policy, as there are currently only 2 users complaining of this issue out of 450. Where do I go on the workstation side of things to see what is happening? For your peace of mind, I have isolated the workstation
in it's own OU with only one policy applied. Here is what the policy ... Read more

Hi
I'm running Win 10 Pro version 1607 (OS Build 14393.321), and I have a weird problem with my 298 GB WD in 2.5? SATA enclosure external hard drive. I have used it several times in the past to backup Windows 7 & 10, but now I can use it to backup Win 7 only not Win 10! I believe this problem may have started after I performed a quick format on it using a Win 10 machine, and also ran CHKDSK /R in order to mark the bad sectors.
Now when I use it to backup my Win 10 machine, backup fails with error 0x8031004A: "BitLocker Drive Encryption cannot be used because critical BitLocker system files are missing or corrupted. Hello @Destro78 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. BitLocker keys (for personal devices) are stored inside or in many case they are back-up to Microsoft cloud with your Microsoft account. Since this is a tablet, I suspect that I suspect your recovery key is available in Microsoft's OneDrive spaceHere are instructions how you can recover the key as well as how to get back to business.>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html  >> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=237614https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey Login to the MS account there and check.Use the key to login to your PC.Eventually, if you prefer you can disable BitLocker and turn off device encryption, or save/print the key offlinePlease, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it.  More info - re. Your harddrive doesn't only have a bitlocker password but bitlocker is also communicating with TPM chip on mainbord. And the mainboard has been swapped so you hav a new TPM chip with other secret key.

Hello,

I've got 2x1TB partition using raid 0 on C: drive which I recently shrunk a little to make a 10GB partition to put "secure" items into. When I try to enable bitlocker encryption on the partition, it gets part of the way through and then my computer dies horribly. It's not a BSOD, the screen is black and windows tells me it can't find its loader.

I reboot a few times and everything is back to normal. Delete the partition, re-create it, format it and try again, same thing.

Bitlocker works ok on my USB keys.

Can anyone give me a clue? I'm wondering if it's the bios throwing a hissy-fit, rather than windows!

For hardware-based RAID systems, whilst all the Microsoft documentation says that it is supported, many people seem to have no success with it - possibly issues with the controller. Some people report success if adding a 3rd drive apparently:

Hi all,
I recently bought a WD My Book Essential Edition external hard drive and wanted to change it from FAT32 to NTFS. I was following instructions given on WDs website, however the directions weren't entirely clear (of course only noticed after the fact). I right clicked on My Computer, clicked manage and used Disk Manager. The instructions said to find the drive, right click on it and click delete partition. It didn't mention however, to do that with bottom part of the screen and not the top. So, I think I just deleted the logical drive.

It shows up on the device manager and the "Safely Remove Hardware" window, but the drive letter no longer shows up under My Computer.

Is there a way to fix this? Or did I just buy a $120 paper weight?

Thanks,

PaveFE

Initially I found that BitLocker on the Go supported removable media like flash drives and external drives. Why isn't a CD/DVD supported since it is considered removable media? Will this support be available in future releases?

Answer:Will BitLocker or BitLocker on the Go ever support CD/DVD encryption?

Hi,

Bitlocker to Go is not supported on CD/DVD. Your suggestion is valuable, I will forward this information to the appropriate department through our internal channel.
Both the Microsoft Product Team and Development Team will take into consideration all suggestions and feedback for future releases.

Currently, you may need third party software to encrypt CD/DVD.

installing a new hard drive, i wanted to wipe my old drive clean and deleted my external
hard drive. I assume all that was deleted was the boot. I have already given it a letter so the system sees the hard drive but nothing else. PC inspector is running in the background trying to find the lost files, but i was wondering if theres anything else i can do.

Answer:Solved: Deleted external hard drive accidently

Might depend on how you deleted it. What type of wipe was it?
Probably the only thing you can try at this time is recovery programs but some are a little better at recovery depending on how the files were deleted or lost, but if the files were deleted in any sort of secure manner they may be gone for good.

GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/) would be another good one to try, and only need to pay for it if it can recover the data.

Unplug and re plug in the external drive while you are in Disk Management and see if an unknown device appears. You can also leave it plugged in and restart you computer. Do you get the "bing, Bong" USB connection sounds?

Like the title said, i accidently converted my external HDD which was in fat32 to NTFS with PartitionMagic.

It took less than 1minute, and it was a 1TB harddrive, so I'm pretty sure no data was changed, only the one of the header sectors. So yea no I have an EMPTY ntfs drive here and i need to recover it.

I know theres a bazilion programs that can RECOVER files, but i don't want to scan the whooolee 1tb drive and recover and rewrite it all to another drive and all that trouble. I was hoping to find a way to just convert it back to fat32 and set the right header and just get my old drive back.

Thanks in advance

Well unless Im mistaken, the only way to switch back to NTFS is to reformat the drive - which still doesn't get your data back. I hope I am wrong.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post but I hope admins can move it if so.

I think I'm in a screwed position which is frustrating me...
Here's the story...

So basically my buddy asked me to format his computer that had linux in it...

Before I even started, I backed up his personal pictures and files to my external hard drive..

After this was accomplished I began the process of Installing a fresh copy of Windows..

1) I accidently unpartitioned my External...which has 2 SATA 500GB Seagates in a Nexstar enclosure. It isn't formatted just unpartitioned...

2) To fix this I acquired Partition Table Doctor...I tried fixing the partition using this program...but for some odd reason it didn't work. I didn't really read the Guide to using this but I skimmed through it and it seemed pretty straight forward.

This didn't work and my laptop did regcognize the drive but didn't show up as Hard drives with letters attached.

My second problem is.. during this stage.. it said there was an error with sectors on my C drive...It asked me if I wanted to fix it and so I did...

I rebooted my laptop once more and BOOM... my Vista wouldn't boot....
and all I got was a black screen and some Funny Characters located at the top left part of the screen...

Can someone lead me to the write direction? I'm totally lost and not sure how to recover my files and fix my MBR at this point...

I'm using the deskto... Read more

Ok, last night I finaly got my server back up and running, well, in the process I accidently formatted one hard drive using the quick format, well.... It had several tax documents my mother needs, and hundreds of family pictures that we can't replace. Now I have a copy of Bart PE, tried that, it found all the data, but it refuses to let me copy it, what it does is tell me that I must have a licensed copy in order to copy the data... So does anyone know of anyway to get this data??? It is still there, but impossible to copy due to software glitchs or something...

Answer:Accidently formatted.... Trying to recover data...

With that much important information involved your best option is to head for a professional data recovery service and pay the fee over depending on any retail product that could be pointed out. A quick web search will find enough of those like Active Undelete for example.

The smart move would be to bring the HD in for them. This is their specialty there.

I was working with two drives and mixed them up on a format. What is on the drive isn't essential, but it would be nice to see what was lost, so I can go from there. Can anyone recommend a way to get it back? It just happened and I haven't put anything else on the drive since it happened. Hit Quick Format, and stopped the formatting about 10 seconds into it, sucks, but what can you do? Be more careful next time, right? Any suggestions?

Without that key bit of information, it is impossible to guess what you have done.

Get someone who knows linux to run a live CD and grab the files from the external hard drive. Make sure you have another drive with enough room to store them on.

Format it again using linux but chose FAT32.

It is probably formatted as ext3, ext4 or some journalizing file type and windows can not see linux file systems.

At first, I don't need to recover my data, I just want my drive back to re-use it.
How can a format my usb drive including all boot sectors which sees to be locked/write-protected by bitlocker?

My problem starts with decrypting my drive by deactivting bitlocker on it by entering the valid password/recovery key. At 36% of decryption the process halts without reason. Now, I'm unable to access my drive or resume the process.

I tried...
    ...to format with windows
   ..remove with diskmgmt
   ... remove with diskpart
   ... repair-bde
   ... manage-bde
   ... ubuntu live cd
... mass production tool software, to override the whole stick

nothing worked. The only thing which worked was once the software M3 Bitlocker recovery Free, but just one time to access the locked partition. But, as mentioned I don't need to recover my data. With that tool I'm not able to wipe the drive.

That Bitlocker protects my data till the end is good, but that it breaks my data and my hardware in such a case is not fair.
How can I break the write-protection mode to finally wipe the hard drive?

Hello, I have a 750Gb external drive that was originally NTFS. Windows shows it as 698Gb. I formatted it to fat32 yesterday, and now windows reads it as 185Gb. In disk manager, as you can see in the screenshot link (from remote desktop) that I have below, disk manager shows the whole drive as one partition that's 698Gb. We have multiple SSD that we use for video shoots and connect to our computers with Thermal Take Black X Docks. Yesterday I formatted one drive (called SSD3) and removed it from the dock. I then inserted another drive (Should be called SSD2) and it gave me an error saying the drive file system was damaged or corrupt. It was calling the drive SSD3 and showing the fresh formatted file system that was on SSD3. For some reason it still thought it was the other drive and now seems to have rewritted the header info or something, because now even if I try and connect it to another computer using a different dock it still reads it as SSD3. Hey guys,

So I was trying to decrypt a Bitlocker-protected portable drive overnight and it seems to be stuck at 0.4% decryption completed (some other drives were encrypted around the same time but I don't think that should affect it much, right?) I guess either my USB 3.0 hub momentarily failed or my computer went to sleep during the process?
Anyway, I then paused decryption and opened up the error checking tool but it didn't complete (I don't think it even opened) but in the process, I agreed to turn off access to the drive during the "error check" that doesn't seem to have happened.

So recap: Not only can I not see the files on the drive, Windows can't even access the drive?

Btw, there's over 2TB worth of some pretty important data on this drive so can someone please help? I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount for a software solution.

Hello all,

I didn't use my external hard drive for over a month, and today I decided that i wanted a back-up of some of the stuff on my laptop. I plugged it in and immediately a message popped up, saying that this drive was protected by something called BitLocker. It required me to enter a 48 digit recovery key. I had NEVER heard of BitLocker up until that point. I didn't know anything about a recovery key, and why didn't it ask for a regular password first, before asking for a recovery key? I didn't have a clue. I still don't have a clue. I searched my computer for BitLocker using the regular 8.1 system search. No results. I searched in PC Info. There is something about encryption there. That was, and is turned off. Not a mention of BitLocker anywhere. When i looked it up it said it comes with Windows 8.1 Pro or Enterprise edition. I am fairly certain I have regular 8.1. How in the name of all that is holy did I get saddled with this piece of shit encryption that locks me from my files, while I don't even want it? When I plugged it into my fathers laptop, also running 8.1 it gave the same message. When i plugged it into my brothers Asus tablet with keyboard combo, also running 8.1, it didn't give any problems. Does anyone here have any clue what is going on? Would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Answer:BitLocker and External Hard Drive(WD My passport 2TB)

I'm having the exact same problem. I've been dealing with it for months. Both of my external hard drives had this happen to them at roughly the same time, and I have no idea how. I too had never heard of Bitlocker before this happened. I tried calling WD and they told me to call Microsoft as Bitlocker is owned by Microsoft. I called Microsoft and they told me to talk to WD. I've been led in circles for months and still cannot access my hard drives and the files on them. I do not have the recovery keys and do not know how to get them. I have been searching for answers throughout the internet without any results. I was told that I could reformat them, and that might work, but then I would lose all of my files. I don't have a backup for them because my hard drives were the backups (that's why I had two!). If you have been able to fix this problem, or have any sort of solutions or options, please, please help me out.

Hello Jenieragav, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm afraid that if you have do not have the password or recovery key, then about the only option is to format the drive to be able to use it again. That's what BitLocker is designed for. No access with password or key.

I had a DVD recorder with internal HDD (Nortek, ndvx hd 160 p).
It was repaired once, but the second time it stopped working, the repairer said the vendor didn't longer provide spare parts.
I asked him to give me the HDD back as I had downloaded tons of home made movie of
my kids from a videocamera.
I bought a logilink bridge (USB2.0 to IDE & SATA) and I expected to see it as an external drive once collected to the PC.
Actually the tool seems to work fine but I do not see any drive.
I found on the web few information about how files are stored on that recorder, they used FAT32 file system.

On a previous thread "Windows 7 unable to read external drive formatted FAT32"
there is a nice procedure from user "balak46", last point is:
"4. Start ->Mycomputer->Rightclick-> Manage ->System->diskmanage.
See if your drive shows up without a letter. Assign a letter and it will work."
Actually my external drive shows up without a letter, but how can I assign one to it?

Hey folks,

I just reformatted a 350gig external hard drive as exFat so as to be able to use it with both Windows at home as well as Mac's - but now it seems my laptop does not read the drive ie I can't see it in MyComputer - although I can still safely remove for some reason.

I should possibly add that it seemed to take a seriously long time to format, around 5-6 hours I would say.

Any help at all would be MUCH appreciated! I can't use it for any purpose at the moment...

Many thanks,

Answer:Formatted External HD as exFat - Windows does not read drive...

You did not say whether you formatted it to exFAT on a Mac or Windows machine. From what I have read ( I do not have a Mac) if you had formatted it on your Mac, you should choose MBR as the partition scheme and not UUID. Windows does not like UUID.

Not sure whether this info helps.

This is a recent problem. I have a Toshiba Canvio external drive, not SSD. It's got Bitlocker, so when I turn my PC on or awake from sleep, I have to enter a password to access the drive. Now, if I restart my PC, it works fine. Recently though, when I awaken from sleep, I'll click on the drive to enter the password, and Windows does this eternal loading thing. The address bar in Explorer has that green progress bar moving along, but it never finishes. If I unplug the drive and plug it back in, I can enter the password and access the drive, but after a while it'll start doing to eternal loading thing again. I doesn't seem like it would be the drive; the drive doesn't know whether the PC is freshly restarted or coming back from sleep.

Answer:External Bitlocker drive not working properly after sleep.

I think it may be an explorer problem. I had the problem with the drive again today after awaking my PC, and tried restarting the explorer process. The explorer UI (windows, task bar, start menu, etc.) is gone, but it won't restart and won't go away when I click "end task"

I have a USB key, and would like to have it encrypt or password protected, in case I lose it.
Same with a harddrive (external). Any recommendations on what program(s) I could use/buy, doesn't matter as long as it's good, I don't mind flipping some coin for it.
Thanks.

Answer:USB key and external hard drive software encryption/protection

My Sony Microvault USB thumb drive has some software that could be downloaded free from Sony that could "password protect any portion of the drive's contents" and also software to use your thumb drive as a key to lock your computer if the drive isn't plugged into it. Probably proprietary software, but you might see if your drive manuf. has anything similar available. URL to see Sony's is: http://www.sony.co.jp/microvault/

Bit Locker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion.
This could be due to either all conversion logs being corrupted or the media being write-protected

Here is the deal. My desktop crashed and needs a reinstall. It doesn't remain stable in safe mode long enough to copy all the data from C drive.

So I plan to use my laptop (Vista) to copy all the data off of desktop C drive onto another external disk using 2 external enclosures.

Put the C drive into a SATA external enclosure. All is well. Can see files, etc.

Plug in a Seagate 320GB hd in another external enclosure previously formatted under XP. Computer assigns drive letter, but when I got to explore the disk, Vista says it needs to be formatted. This disk is definitely formatted and has data on it.

Why does Vista not see this as a formatted drive? It sees the old desktop C drive just fine.

Any solutions before I reformat and lose all the data on this external?

Thanks

Hello there,
I had windows 10 backup on my 1TB WD external hard drive. My 1TB external hard drive was also having all my important files along with pictures and videos. I was using following the step given in this video : How to Install Windows 10 from a USB Flash Drive - YouTube.
After reboot, all my data/files/pics/videos on 1TB got deleted/formatted. When I plug in this hard drive again, it is showing only FAT 32 GB storage instead of showing 1TB. I went to manage and disk management, it is showing below info, which is showing 899.48 GB unallocated.
Can someone please help me how to get back all my deleted/formatted data/files/ics/videos ???
Thanks

Answer:External Hard drive formatted / deleted while installing windows 10

Have you tried checking your primary drive for the windows.old folder? Assuming you chose either the "Keep my files" or the"Remove Everything" options instead of the "Restore Factory Settings" entry, then all of your old files should be stored there.

You could try EaseUs Partition Manager CLICK HERE I believe it has a partition recovery tool and it's free.

I have an external drive that was formatted FAT32 which I have been using with my XP laptop for the past year. I have data on it that I want to transfer to my Windows 7 laptop. However, as soon as I connect it to my Windows 7 laptop, it comes up with a message saying "You need to format the disk before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I assumed that Windows 7 was unable to read the drive because it was FAT32, so I connected it back to my XP laptop and ran the conversion: CONVERT E: /FS:NTFS - The conversion completed successfully and I connected the drive back to my Windows 7 laptop. But it still came up with the same message that the drive needs to be formatted. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Answer:Windows 7 unable to read external drive formatted FAT32

What I would do, is format the drive using Windows 7 then copy the files with your XP then copy them over to your 7. Windows 7 uses NTFS system while XP can use both so if the drive is formatted with 7 then XP can backwards convert it. Windows 7 kinda sucks when it comes to accessing drives. I don't know why they did that but oh well.....
