External HDD is Unknown and Not Initialized

Question: External HDD is Unknown and Not Initialized

Hello there. This is my first post at this forum.

I have a probably 6-7 years old WD Elements 1TB external HDD. When I connect it to PC via USB I can hear ordinary HDD detected sound and after that it sounds some short beeps at 7-3-3 order. Here are some screenshots of my situation. Is there any way to recover my data stored in this HDD? My priority is saving my data but saving HDD would also be cool

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: External HDD is Unknown and Not Initialized

Jumunji is one of the best recovery techs around! However, I can ask this: Did the computer use the Smartware and DriveUnlock when operations were aok? If so, my best guess is: get the Smartware and DriveUnlock back to the aok-days' operations.

Please help me to get my important data from my bad hard disk,

I have a segate 500 GB usb external HDD, It was working fine since last 3 years. yesterday i connect this to a XP machine, and start coping some data. the coping speed was very slow, so I restarted the machine in between. After that I LOST MY hdd, it never be back. I tried a lot.. no success till now.
Please help me get my data back:

Answer:How do i fix unknown, not initialized and unallocated external hd?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ... but I had almost exactly the same thing happen to me on a Seagate 2TB hard drive. Working for months, even passing surface checks with no errors and then, one day -- "bad disk".

I've tried every data recovery app I could find against it (4 of them) and none of them find anything.

I've had drives fail me over the years and have never run into this situation where the drive powers up but NOTHING can be recovered from it.

So, I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery outfit

Answer:How do i fix unknown, not initialized and unallocated external hd?

Right click on it and choose Create Parittion. Choose the type of partition. Then format it. I recommend doing the slow format. It may take an hour or so, but I think you're better off in the long run.

Hey guys,

I have this new Western Digital My Book that I got about 6 months ago and it suddenly will not show up when I plug it in. I tried looking for solutions on what's happening but I can't get past the first few steps, until I found one where it says that the drive is probably toasted! Anyway, I'm still not giving up hope. I tried it on two computers, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver but it's still the same. I tried initializing it and it's giving me "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". I would like to chkdsk it but I forgot what the drive letter of the hard drive, so I can't really search it.

Here're some screenshots.

Hi,

I've been recovering data from three older internal hard drives for a friend, by way of an external HDD enclosure connected via USB to my laptop. It went well for the first two HDDs but the third, well ....

It's a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 HDD, 120 GB and is also marked SATA150.

(1) On most occasions, the HDD in question does not appear under My Computer. Under Devices and Printers, I see the external HDD enclosure as "USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge" (but not the HDD). In Disk Management, I see my internal drives and CD/DVD ROM but for the HDD in question, only "Disk 2, Unknown, Not Initialised" - I get the option to initialise it as MBR or GPT (I cancel at that point).

(2) On rare and seemingly random occasions, my laptop does pick up the HDD as drive F: but usually asks me if I want to format it (nope!). At this point it also appears under Devices and Printers, My Computer and in Disk Management as 'RAW' and 'healthy'.

(3) On three occasions, I have seen the drive name; on two occasions, all of the files - and on one occasion, I was able to copy four files across to my laptop (before losing visibility of it). So I know all the files are there.

However the HDD disconnects itself (or is disconnected) quite quickly, such that I am back to position (1) for the vast majority of the time.

I have tried TestDisk and EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which do not see the HDD. I have also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard, which mostly does not see the HDD but on one occa... Read more

Hi empog,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It could be an either an issue with the harddrive itself or it is formatted in a partition which is not recognized by windows.

Once the harddrive is connected open command prompt and type diskpart and hit enter. Then type list disk and hit enter.

Whatever information is displayed kindly post a screenshot for the same.

Hi, i'm new on this forum. I was searching for an answer to this issue in a lot of threads but i didn't find something to fix it.

I built an external hd using the hard disk of my old laptop (Fujitsu MHV2120AH PL) and a Woxter i-Case 240.

When i connected it via USB i went to the Disk Manager and saw the unit as "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized". But there was something else, the disk has a size of 120GB but the Disk Manager shows only 700MB.

The Disk Manager didn't allowed me to format this partition and when I press on "Initialize disk" it didn't do anything.

I used a Linux Live CD and I had the same issue, i tried to create a new partition table but it didn't create it and GParted didn't allow me to create a new partition answering that i need a partition table first.

I tried with Diskpart without any result too.

This HD had an Windows XP installed on the old laptop and before dissamble it i made a quick format with the Bootable CD of my laptop. The quick format was interrupted when the program was copying the files necesary to install Windows XP.

Do you have any idea?

Answer:Unknown - Not Initialized Disk (External HD)

Hello Matterito!

You could try a couple of things: changing the enclosure, as this one's controller may be corrupt, or hooking up the disk directly to the computer.
Also, see if your USB drivers need updating.

Following this, it may be that your disk is just damaged. It could be just that the partition table is corrupted, so may be writing full zeros to the disk and repartitioning and reformatting it would help fix the issue. That is in the case that you don't need the information on the drive.

I've got 600GB HD (Rock mobile disk) that goes without saying need to be recuperated. It was working fine earlier this summer when I last accessed it. A few weeks ago, I plugged it in again and it gave me an I/O Device Error, read and unspecified error.

I have been researching a solution non stop and today when i plugged it in once again something worst happened, this time I see a External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized in Disk Management.

Can someone please help?

The irony... we get an external drive to protect our data and not loose it and then this happens

Answer:External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized

Try this to salvage what you can from it: Download MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition - MajorGeeks
Do that before any attempts to repair.
If nothing, portable drives are even less reliable than stationary ones and it's interfaces are prone to malfunction.

I am using windows 8 and I have read previous threads with similar issues that I face but my problem is unique. My 60GB external Hard disk was manufactured by FUJITSU and was taken out of a dell laptop. When I bought a case for it yesterday it was tested in a laptop computer to see if it was working before I paid for the case and it was working properly. However, the owner of the laptop removed the cable without safely ejecting the drive first. Later, I connected it to several computer and it would install and be detected in Device manager, Disk Management and even devices and printers but it does not show in My Computer nor does autoplay options pop up. In disk management it is shown as Disk 1 unknown not initialized as shown in the attached screenshot.

I notice that whenever i open disk management, it prompts me to initialize the disk but when i chose gpt and click ok, this window pops up

when I right click the Disk 1 the initialize option is gray and only offline, properties, and help are available. I used mini partition tool and this is what i get

I am at my wits end. Please assist. I do not need what is inside the hdd. I just want it to work.

It is my brother's hard drive & it has very important data related to his working. It is a 2tb WD my passport ultra external hard disk which was used as NTFS with only one partition.
My brother told me that he deleted some data from the drive by mistake and was recovering the data from the drive but all the windows recovery programs he used just hanged after few minutes (which is also a sign of bad sectors). Then he done the blundered mistake by formatting the drive, the formatting also not completed due to hang situation.

Now the current situation is that the drive is not showing in the windows explorer and when I open the disk management ,the popup came up for initializing the disk either as MBR or GPT. When I try to initialize the disk, it gives me this error:- "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error". I have attached a few screenshots below.

I have tried cloning the drive with clonezilla, tried booting the drive with parted magic, Hire n boot and system rescue CD but neither of them recognized the drive and some also rejected to boot with the drive attached.
Now currently i am scanning this disc for recovering the lost partition in the 'Partition Recovery Wizard' software according to the advice on some old thread here, but this software has detected my disk as 'bad Disk' in the file System column as you can see in the fifth image, so i don't have much hope with this software.

Please tell me if there is any hope left for drive like try... Read more

Answer:wd 2tb external drive - unknown, not initialized and unallocated

Hello nsingla and I am sorry you and your brother have this problem!

Things don't look so good now. You've done and tried a lot with aim you need, still looks like the drive's partition table and/or file system are corrupted to a stage that prevents other software to work correctly onto the drive.

I could additionally suggest trying to scan and repair the drive. Try downloading the WD ultra Drive Utilities for Windows and see if you could repair the drive:

Support Answers

If nothing works, the drive is probably too damaged and beyond repair. Hope this is not the case. But perhaps the worst part for the drive was the formatting attempt. Which, by definition, would delete everything from the HDD.

Good luck and post back with results!

My external HDD has crashed after unplugging it accidentally while using it. I believe the directory structure has been corrupted. The external HDD shows Unknown, no size, and Not Initialized on the Disk Management screen:

I have tried using MiniTool Partition Wizard as described in this thread.

I'm not sure where to go now to try to recover the data on this HDD.

Thanks for your help in advance.

hello there ,

i tried to plug it in another computers but nothing changed.
i have many thing in that drive i need them so could you please help me ?

Answer:my external hard drive is unknown and not initialized

I assume you have tried another usb cable; that is the very first thing to do.
If you have already done the above, then the next thing I would do would be to pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it as an internal drive. Note you must have a working desktop to accomplish this task. If that does not work, you can send the drive to a data recovery shop. This last step is NOT cheap so get an estimate. A simple recovery using software can run $250 or so plus the cost of whatever media you want the data copied to AND it goes way up from there.

Data you do not backup is data you do not care about AND you should expect to lose said data. All drives fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail.

I had a WD 2TB external drive which I transferred successfully to a USB 3.0 enclosure months ago. Then I moved and the drive has been packed away in the trunk of my car since.

I just got it out as I need some files on it, and when I hooked it up it didn't work: the computer recognized it as a CD drive or something... in Computer it would not show up or show up as just a drive letter ... in disk management it said No Media. I tried it on another PC too to no avail.

After much research, the most likely solution looked to be to get a new enclosure. So I did, but the drive still isn't working, but in a different way.

When I first hooked it up, all looked well: the system tray showed correct recognition of the drive and enclosure type/brand and installed the drivers successfully.

But the drive no longer shows up in Computer at all, and in disk management it now prompts me to initialize the disk, and has it marked as Unknown, Not Initialized.

I have spent all day trying to fix this problem, and have read a million threads on different sites and tried everything, to no consequence. I need the files on the drive, and have tried all of the following:

Answer:External Hard Drive HELL (Unknown, Not Initialized)

Do NOT initialize it. With a usb stick or dvd Puppy Linux boot firmly in place ready to boot, can you reconnect the WD 2TB drive back to the computer like it was in the old days? Boot Puppy Linux, copy all the data folders and files onto another reliable external media. If that does not work, you might be heading for a local business-oriented computer fix-it place. However, let's see what others here might want to add.

Hello
I got my 1tB WD external disk and it's not working as it used to. The problem came from nowhere, suddenly, totally unexpected. There is/was my precious data on it which I collected for 10+ years and I'd like not to lose it.

Origin:
It was working fine a day ago, no problems occured. Hasn't been unplugged since then. Has never fallen. Has never had any kind of error. But: I've seen some kind of ".COM not responding" problem on my PC (don't remember, closed it immediately). I believe my laptop is in a good and healthy condition.

So, what my WD HDD does is:
- it can be seen as a device by my computer. I can plug it out safely.
- diode shows that it's working (not showing the data transfer activity)
- nothing else

What I see in Device Management/Storage is (as in the title):
Screenshot by Lightshot

What programs I used to try to restore partition:
- Mini tool Partition Recovery Home Edition (quick and deep scan, no results. Shows disk as a Bad Disk)
http://prntscr.com/2wpy8s
- Mini tool Power Data Recovery (pro, non-free tool, however after scan there was no results)
- Find and Mount (no results)
- TestDisk (quick and deep scan, no results)

What I haven't tried doing is connecting the HDD directly to the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Answer:External HDD shows as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. Restore?

You should try directly conmcting it. If that does not work, try this: Recover a flash drive turned RAW ? Partition Wizard and TestDisk. Do recovery with partition wizard. (Don't mind the name) But if that does not work, your drive is dead. Like a wise man said, backup, backup, backup!

I guess there is mechanical problem with the hard drive. you can try checking and repairing bad sectors (http://www.articlesbase.com/hardware...s-6907958.html), or just send it to some drive repair center.
but, if there is important files on the drive, you'll have to recover data before repairing it.

Sorry to say your WD Elements is dead and you have tried everything. There is nothing left for me to do, honestly. I would have done the same thing before declaring it dead.. No DIY data recovery is possible. The only option open to you is to entrust it to Western Digital Data Recovery partners in your region. Check with them whether there is any hope of recovering data in good shape.Telephonic consultation is free.

I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.

I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:

It is visible in Device manager under Disk Drives but not under USB.

There are few threads in this forum which are similar to mine, except that their Drives are visible in the Disk Management as Unallocated Space, mine is not.

I've tried all tools, tried in Windows XP still no solution.

Is there any way to atleast recover the data !!!!!!!!!

Hi there Sedhadi,

If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.

I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:

(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).

I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.
Any help is really appreciated.

-Click Initialized it said i/o device error

I have try uninstall the device and restart let it install again still the same.
Checking many thread have the same problem, I wonder anyone solve this kind of problem before?
--------------
Update the possible cause of it, I believe my external hard disk spoil because my laptop was low battery and suddenly off either it goes Hibernate or off there is no time to read or write in the hard disk.
Then I just unplug the external hard disk.

If you face this situation don't unplug it, turn on the computer back and do a proper remove or shut down everything.

Hello,

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

About 5 days ago my Seagate 3TB Barracuda HDD started running very slow. Transfer speeds dropped to 182kb/s it previously was around 25.6mb/s. So I started backing up as much as I could, but after 5 days and only getting about 300GB backed up I decided to run chkdsk on the drive. That was a bad idea because now I cannot access the drive at all, and I still have 2.12TB of data that isn't backed up.

Drive has been in use since November 2013
It had over 106,000 files on it.

Things that I tried before Chkdsk:

The drive letter used to be M:
In My Computer I had the drive renamed but it changed itself to local disk

Seatools - Passed all the tests when I was able to access the drive. But the drive info said the power on hours were 0 and the drive temperature was 32 degrees F, other external drives were showing around 30,000 power on hours and temperatures around 130-136 degrees F, the one internal drive showed 72 degrees F

Crystal Disk Info - Showed Unknown Drive and no Info

Crystal Disk Benchmark: Took a long time to run but I posted a screenshot of the results

I plugged the drive into a laptop, had the same results

I tried replacing both the power cable in the USB cable, same result

I tried plugging the USB into a USB 2.0 port instead of the 3.0 that it had been in, still the same exact transfer speed

I tried changing the HDD's policies to Better Performance instead of Quick Removal. Same results

I tried to update driver but it says its up t... Read more

Hi there,

So I had a desktop with a single HDD running windows XP, the desktop overheated and automatically shutoff. The next time I powered on the PC, nothing happened - no BIOS, no beeps, nothing! The PC was pretty old so I just figured it had run it's course and I was thinking about getting a laptop anyway.

So I got a new Windows 7 laptop, and after a few days of setting it up I yanked out the hdd from the old XP desktop and plugged it into the laptop's USB port via some SATA to USB cables.

Win7 recognized new hardware and and seemed to install the drive correctly as "USB Storage", but nothing ever appeared in the Windows Explorer. I opened up the device manager and under 'Disk Drives' I saw a 'USB Drive' item. The properties on that item seemed to indicate all the drivers and such were properly installed and the 'device was working properly'. Under the 'Disk Management' section, the disk showed up - but it said it was 'unknown' and 'not initialized', so no partitions showed up (it also prompted me to 'initialize' it, which I DID NOT do).

At this point I've tried several recovery programs, but the biggest issue is that none of the programs actually see the drive, so I can't run the recovery at all. I even tried Hiren's Boot CD, but again, nothing sees the drive - although, I think that I didn't properly install the USB drivers, so I may try that... Read more

Hello,
New here to this forum. Been searching and reading for the past week trying to get my HDD to work.

I was able to access my external HD about a week ago, watched a movie off it and fell asleep. When I awoke the next morning, powered on my laptop, it wouldn't boot up so I shut it down and unplugged the HD and powered it back on. Plugged the HD back in, computer sees it but not showing in My Computer.

Within Disk Management, it shows Disk1 - Unknown - Not Initialized.

Searched and searched and searched for different solutions, tried different things and still nothing. I have tried PW but not showing up to be able to scan it. I have a docking station so I pulled the HD out and plugged it into that. PW was able to see it but no partitions found. Tried to run TestDisk (per some other help treads instructions) with nothing found.
I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable.

I have lots of important files on this HD and I really need them. Sending it to a professional is out of the question.

I'm currently about to boot up pendrive and see if it sees anything there.

I can post any screen shots and try anything again. I have done nothing but scans scans scans.

Thank you!

Hi HAPPYSOk,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I would have been happy to help you had it not been a Western Digital External drive.

Is your drive's model No. this WDBFJK0030HBK?

Your drive is hardware encrypted and should the interface card that contains the encryption chip and the decryption key fail, even if the HDD itself is good, you can't get your data out by hooking it up as a second drive in a dock or sata connect on a desktop. You can get what data is there inside but it will be the encrypted data.

Your statement "I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable." confirms this.

The only way you can get your data back is to send the enclosure and drive to the Western Digital patronised Data Recovery Partners listed by WD here WD Support / Data Recovery Partners. Only they have been supplied with the decrypt key by WD and they will do it in a jiffy for you.

Free consultation, So get a quote from them and you will never again buy a WD drive, I am sure.

Hi, My DVD Recorder died, so I took out the HDD Seagate DB35.2 and plugged it in my laptop. I get the above message in disk management. I also tried Knoppix 7.0 but the disk does not show up. My scope is to save the content in the disk and move it to my PC, is it a mission impossible? Any suggestion is very welcome. Thanks Alex

Answer:Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized

I'm not sure you will have much luck if the disk is not readable. You can usually use a Linux distro to try to read it, but you've tried that. If it can be read you can also try Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console. Other than that you could try Recuva and see if that will work. But, if the disk can't be read, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do if those 3 options don't help.

First thing I'd do is try to run the hard drive manufacturer's disk tools on the drive. It may be dead or dying. Shows as "bad disk" with no file system in PW.

And I'd hope I had a backup of whatever is on it.

That is bad news mate. Usually a mechanical HDD won't survive physical shock like dropping etc. This is because of the microscopical gap between the head and platter. Heads flying height on modern HDDs is about 5-10 nano-meters. For example: an average human's hair is about 25000 nano-meters in diameter. A drop will most likely cause the head to stuck on platter or cause scratches on platter surface.
I would suggest diagnosing the HDD using "Seagate Seatool" and verifying it's health.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate
Run the tool and select your external HDD for testing. Then choose "Basic Tests --> Shot Generic" and wait for it to finish.

If the test is a pass, run "Basic Tests --> Long Generic". If either of the test fails, the case will be beyond DIY and you should consult a data recovery pro for recovery.

Start with this free tool. You should try to recover the partition before worrying about recovering the data. If you can recover the partition, the files should be OK if they haven't been over-written.

Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

Select Partition Recovery Wizard. Choose the drive, then full disk, quick scan. Quick Scan may take 5 or more hours.

If the partition is eventually found, select and double click on it. You should then see all files in the Explorer.

This 2.5" SATA drive is from a Toshiba that seems to have died this morning. There's no boot, no BIOS, nada.
I removed the drive and attached it via USB to my Win7 box where it shows as "Unknown, Not initialized, and offline." There are no rt-click options in disk management. I can hear the drive spinning, but it shuts down on its own occasionally, and sometimes won't power up at all without a bit of fiddiling.
I can't get any response at all from my Linux box, and neither Test Disk nor Recuva finds it at all.
Is there anything else to do, or is this drive dead, as I suspect it is?

I have this 160GB hard drive that I have not been using for a while, yet I am very sure it was working fine the last time I used it.

Today when I plugged it in to my new notebook that is running Windows 8.1 now, it doesn't detect my hard drive. I also tried on other notebook and it has the same issue. So I know the problem is most likely on the hard drive.

Using Command Prompt, it says Disk 1's status is "Online", but size is "0".

Here is the status at Computer Management:
Disk 1
Unknown
Not Initialized

I also tried to Initialize on MBR, but it returned me with "Incorrect function." message.

I tried "Troubleshoot" and the result says:
"USB Mass Storage Device is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0
Plug the device into an available USB 2.0 port..."
My notebook has 3 USB ports where according to the manual, 2 of them are backward compatible to 2.0... I tested on each, but it is still not working.

What should I do? Although I have not been using it for a while, I wish to check the content first before formatting it. I might have some forgotten, yet important files within.

Thanks in advance. Hope I can be assisted here.

If the controller in the enclosure failed removing the drive and slaving it into a desktop PC may let you recover your files. If the drive failed there isn't much you can do.

Hi, I just got a new Y570 Laptop with a 64 gb ssd. In the disk management window, there are two hard drives listed. There is a disk 0, which has four partitions on it, and a disk 1 which is unknown and initialized. Disk 0 is the HDD that comes with the computer. When I try to initialize Disk 1, I get a message saying The disk cannot find the sector requested. What does this mean? Also, is disk 1 the ssd that I'm supposed to have? Another problem:On my hdd, I have an empty partition that says Healthy (OEM partition). It has no file system or letter assigned to it. It is 14.75 gb, and according to disk management, all 14.75 gb are free. What is it, and can I delete it without affecting anything else on my computer?

Answer:Y570 Unknown Disk 1 Not initialized/OEM Partition

hi galaxion2,first of all, do not delete the 14.75 gb partition. it's hidden/system partition that your computer will need to use it during one key recover process.secondly, as you noticed, disk1 is ssd.

I am experiencing the same issue as with jenny123 but with an additional problem. I am troubleshooting a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external hard drive for my buddy. It is previously working but one day, it is not detected anymore by any device. It is found in the Disk Management however, it is listed as Unknown, Not Initialized, and not showing the partition as shown in the screenshot.

When I try to change it from Offline to Online, I am encountering the error:
"Virtual Disk Manager: The system cannot find the file specified"

I also used the DISKPART in cmd but it is not showing Disk 1 as shown below.

The external hard drive is found in disk drives but it is not showing it's model name.

I tried all the recommended software (partition wizard, testdisk, icare) but still no luck. I also tried searching online for an answer but there's no closure to their issues as well. Hope someone can help on this as he need a) the drive and b) recover the files in the external drive. Thanks!

EDIT: The drive can be seen in the Devices and Printers as shown below.

Answer:Disk unknown, not initialized, and not showing partition

Hi

For any serious troubleshooting, diagnostics or recovery attempt, you should always connect an HDD to a direct SATA port. Usually you can easily remove the header of any Seagate Golex drive and then connect it to an internal SATA port.

Let us know what "Disk Management" reports when you connect the drive directly.

Hello,

I have used the tittle from another thread as my issue is very similar, only none of what is posted there worked for me.

So I have a WD 500gb HDD. (Actually I am not 100% sure it is a HDD and not a SDD)
I have plugged it in various PC and laptops. When doing so, you get the usual sound que. It also installs the driver according to the little pop up window.
However after that, the drive is not visible in "My Computer".

When I check the drive in Computer Management>Disk Management, it wants me to initialise the disk. Which, I know I do not want to do (thanks to one of your earlier posts) as this will over write my data.
In Disk Management the disk is "Unknown" and "Not Initialised" It also does not give any volume. Pics of both of these attached.

I have tried using Partition Wisord free. It does not even see the drive.
I have tried using Photorec. It does not see the drive.
I have used R-Studio. It does see the disk, but I am not able to scan it. Again also no disk volume. Again Picture attached.

I am hopeful for a solution, as I feel like the symptoms suggest that I do not have a head misalignment. But I might be wrong on that.

Hoping for someone with some mad skills to help me out here.

Thanks in advance!

It means the disk surface is severely damaged (has developed pretty huge number of bad sectors ). At this point, Imaging the disk and working on the copy is the best step you can do. I would suggest ;

- Create a RAW disk image using "ddrescue". Since your HDD is a 2TB one, you need a larger capacity drive like 3TB one to store the image.

- Try the trial versions of "GetDataBack" and "R-Studio" on the RAW image. Both supports working with disk images created by "dd" and "ddrescue".

I ran BIOS diagnostics on a Dell OptiPlex 3010 yesterday and received an error code (2000-0142) - short self test unsuccessful. I pulled the drive and swapped a new SATA drive to get the user back up and running quickly. I'm trying to connect the drive with the error to my laptop using a StarTech USB 2.0 to IDE SATA Adapter. When I open Disk Management I see Disk 0 (my laptop drive) and Disk 1 (the connected drive). It says Unknown / Not Initialized. When I right click and try to initialize it says "The device is not ready." I've tried the more actions > refresh / rescan. Now when I right click the option to Initialize Disk is grayed out and I can only see Offline and Properties.

I browsed through a thread from about 2 years ago and couldn't find a helpful solution.

Answer:Recover Data from Disk that is unknown and not initialized

If the data is critical, and it sounds like it is.. the first thing I would do is use a software that makes a sector by sector backup or image of that uninitialized drive. That way if trying to make it readable by initializing it should hose it, you have a copy.

After that, if you know that the unititialized drive was at one time formatted NTFS then you might try initializing it with Partition Wizard freeware

But it may be worthwhile to talk to someone well versed in disk recovery. There may even be some dedicated forums around for that specialty.

If you get lucky and the Partition Wizard initialization shortcut works, then the files should be there after doing a non-destructive format as NTFS file system.

Assuming that's what it was to begin with.

My external HD is WD 1TB HD.. it does not matter if i lose the data..but i want the HD to work

Answer:disk manager shows DISK1 unknown and not initialized

I had a Seagate drive fail suddenly last week -- a lot like the situation you described, and neither the Seagate nor the WD drive diagnostics even see the drive when it's in an external drive caddy. When I connect it to an internal drive cable, I get a SMART error and the PC hangs on the boot.

Have also tried Minitool Partition Wizard and some other data recovery apps, which CAN see the external drive, but they can't find or recover any partitions.

Suggest you check with Minitool as they offer a free trial of a data recovery app that might work for you.

This is the first time in years that I've had a drive fail and NONE of the data recovery apps have been able to find anything on the drive.

I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery service and am awaiting a quote.

It pops up with a error "Incorrect Function"

Any ideas??

Hi

I would suggest verifying the health condition of your hard drive first. You can use "WD Data Life Guard Diagnostic" to do that.

Download : WD Support / Downloads / Legacy Internal / WD RE2

The WD tool will list both your internal HDD and USB HDD for testing. Select the USB one and choose "Extended Test" to run. Let us know the test result in next reply.

I have an Asus Vivotab Smart running full Win8.1 and a Western Digital My Passport 2TB external HDD. The hard drive works fine on other computers running 7, 8 and 8.1. The tablet can read other hard drives fine as well. But this one hard drive will not function on just the tablet. I've tried deleting the drivers and letting Windows reinstall them as well as installing the latest drivers from the WD site. I've tried using a different cord, a different adapter and other USB devices on the tablet. The HDD shows up in Devices and Printers when plugged in but not Explorer and NOT Disk Management at all. Now if I delete the drivers it appears in Disk Management as an offline and not initialized drive, no drive letter. I can't initialize it and trying to set it to Online results in an an I/O error. When i unplug it and plug it back in Windows appears to be reinstalling it, but then it's back to not appearing in Disk Management at all.

This occurred when it was just Win 8. I upgraded to 8.1 and it worked for about 8 hours. The drive installed and functioned 100% after upgrading to 8.1.....and then just stopped working again. Same issue. Again, the drive works fine in every other computer I connect it to. Every other drive and USB device works fine when connected to this tablet. Just this one drive on this one tablet refuses to initialize.

Any ideas?

Answer:Wd External HDD Not initialized

Tablet might not have enough power thru USB, smaller devices could work and this one is probably pulling too much. If that's the case you can connect it thru an USB splitter with it's own 5V power supply but that won't make it as portable.

Hello

I am trying to recover data from my external HD 1 TB Fantom Drive GreenDrive. It crashed and I had no choice to force power down. When I look into Disk Management - I see that Disk 1 Unknown Size Not Initialized.

See Disk Man.JPG for printscreen of Disk Management.

I tried following the Mini Partition Tool advice and did not find the external drive on the software. Please see Mini Partion Tool.JPG for print screen.

I am thinking about buying another external HD 2TB and clone this drive to recover the data. Any advice to clone a drive that I cannot select.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I've seen that and the HDDs had truly crashed, wasn't anything I could do but in a couple of instances I sent them off to a firm that recovers data if the platters/disks in them haven't been physically damaged. Sometimes the read-write heads will scratch the platters and they are then truly screwed up.

I have a 300GB usb external hdd, when I plug it in it beeps but does not show in "Computer". I right click on Computer/Manage/Disc Management and it shows there as 298GB Disk 2 Not initialized. A box appears, saying you must initialize before Logical Disk Manager can access it. When I click on OK I get the message Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)
If I go to the box to initialize it everything is greyed out.
There is nothing of any importance on the drive so if everything is lost it doesn't matter.

Hi,

I'm not even sure what the topic title should be. But I can tell you about my problem.

I plugged in a new Bipra 250 GB NTFS external Hard Drive with the intention of using it to clone my C Drive.  A scan of the new drive reported no errors.  However, when I tried to run AOMEI Backupper it quit with this message:

Information Code:4120
Failed to adjust partition size.

Although I could see the drive when I clicked on Safely Remove Hardware, I could not find the drive in Explorer.

In Device Manager the disk was listed as Mass Storage Device USB Device.  I tried updating the driver, but MS says the driver is up to date.

In Disk Management, the disk showed  as Disk 1  Basic Online.   232.88 GB  - Unallocated.

Online I found information that said to right click the drive and choose New Simple Volume.  I did that. It ran. Still the drive goes unrecognized and I am unable to clone it.

I tried a reboot with the drive plugged in.  When Windows started, I could see the drive in Explorer but a message said:  Location not available.

Well, dirty word. -- And now that is gone too and the drive once more shows as unallocated in Disk Management.

More info online tells me to partition the drive after running New Simple Volume. But now I'm afraid to do that, and I don't know why that is necessary.

I have an external hard drive from home (160 GB iOmega) formatted in I believe FAT32 with all my data on it from my iMac. I'm trying to connect it to my new ThinkPad to get my data. It doesn't show up in My Computer, but in Disk Management there is a Disk 1 that has a black bar at top instead of blue, says not initialized on the side, and says unallocated under the bar. Also, when I open Disk Management it offers to initialize my disk, but I fear that would erase my data.

How would I get my computer to read the disk but not erase my data?

I have this WD 1TB external drive that stopped working a while ago. I am trying to initialize it in order to perhaps try to recover data from it using a Data Recovery Wizard.

When connecting the drive via USB, it only sometimes shows up in 'Devices and Printers' as connected through USB (ie, it allows me to click 'Eject My Book' in the task bar). When it shows up there, I can also see it in Disk Management as 'Disk 2, Unknown, 931.51 GB, Not Initialized' with a little red downward facing arrow icon.

When I right click the icon (with the red arrow) and choose Initialize, it hangs a bit and then shows an error saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

When I run 'USB device viewer' (UVCView) this is what shows up next to that device :

Hi,

My problem is as follows:
External Hard Drive (1Tb WD Elements) that I've been using for a few months now has data on that I would very much like to keep.
It was working fine until yesterday in which I tried opening a VS project which became unresponsive, tried closing everything down and turning off computer which just froze the computer leading to a hard reset (button held for 5 seconds)

Since then the External Hard Drive has not been shown in Windows Explorer and in Disk Management is shown as "Unkown" and "Not Initialized"

The Drive will still be seen correctly in Device Manager and if uninstalled it will say it has correctly installed and is ready to use.

Attempts to recover data or Initialize the drive have not worked and I have followed and looked up multiple ways to recover and other similar cases. I'm fairly certain for the data recovery the drive needs to be initialized (which just throws me an I/O error upon attempting the process) as looking at the Volume section in the properties of the device the size of the drive is listed as 0Mb.

My Last resort is taking it to a data recovery shop and hope they can grab the stuff on there.

Any help is muchly appreciated thanks.

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Initialized

I'm not up on WD Elements. Did that HD come with a form of Smartware, and in that Smartware, was there a utility that would come up and either ask you to type in the user-assigned password or it would automatically type in the saved password and pass same onto The System -- and unlock the WD Elements? I ask because I'm a little familiar with WD Passport, not WD Elements.

I restarted the PC , after it's booting and logging in to windows, I didnt found the HardDisk in "This PC", I goes to windows 10 64 bit' disk management console and a popup window appears asking me if I want to initialize it.
Any solution do you have for this?

Hi all,

I'm having an issue where my external hard drive (WD Passport Ultra 2TB) is not displaying in my computer and is not initialized in Disk Management. This occurred after my computer crashed while I was pulling out data from the external hard drive. Now when I plug in the external hard drive, it has a clicking sound for a few seconds then stops with a blinking light.

I have tried using the MiniTool Partition Wizard and it does not detect it. When I open up Disk Management, it says that I need to initialize the disk before I can access it. I read somewhere that I will lose my files if I initialize this, so I have not done so. The Disk Management also does not show any unallocated space in it. Please see attached image.

Currently I just want to take out all the data from this hard drive before I let this drive go if I can't save it. Is there any hope for me to save my files?

Best regards,
Jeefster

Answer:external drive say it was online, not initialized, and sometimes RAW

Hi andremarb,

Welcome to SevenForums.

From the description of your problem, I would think that the cable could have got damaged due the unceremonious kick that the HDD received. So as a first step use a new cable and check how your external drive behaves.

If the problem persists, please start a new thread explaining your problem in detail. Furnish full details of your external drive make/manufacturer/ Model /Capacity along with a full screenshot of how the drive appears in Windows Disk Management. Please adhere to the guidelines here Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

In the new thread, even if it is not me - so unreliable these days , some one else can address your concern. So move on with the new thread.

EDIT: Just noted that your post has been moved on to a new thread. But this post still holds - more details and screenshot after changing to a new cable.

I have an WD 1TB hard disk which failed to initialize recently. It gives me an I/O error message. I found a few old threads here with similar problem and tried out the suggested steps. I ran WD diagnostic tool and passed the Quick test and Extended test(Screenshot attached). I would like to avoid the zero test and formatting of my data if possible. The hard disk is almost full and recovering them after formatting would be really painful. I would be really grateful if someone could please help me out?

Is you have a empty hard drive kicking about or somewhere to store you data, move it all to there.
Then format you drive, see if that works.

Hi, papaikolaou1980. Welcome to Major Geeks!

Unfortunately, none of the screenshots are showing here. But, if you've done everything listed in your post and the drive isn't showing properly, I'd say it "died" and if still under warranty, you should get a replacement. If it's a "green" series rather than "blue" or "black", I'd avoid getting another one as there have been many dependability issues with WD's "green" series.

Hi, thanks for trying to help me with this.

I recently moved and had my external hard drive disconnected and in storage for several months. It is a Western Digital model# WD500H1U-00. It has a separate power supply. There is a blue light on the front that is illuminated all the time, except when I connect the HD, then it will flash. When I got unpacked I hooked it up to my desk top and the computer would not access it. I then tried to install it on my laptop with no success. Since then I purchased a USB cord, with no luck.

This hard drive has a LOT of irreplaceable information on it. Formatting it is not an option.

Kevin at SpywareHammer.com was helping me with some other stuff and suggested I:

Regarding the ext HD, try this please:

1) Control panel===>administrative tools===>computer management===>Disk management

2) You'll Should see a list of Disks, Is Disk 1 listed with no partition letter assigned? if so continue

3) Right mouse click into the disk field, select Change drive letter and paths ===> choose a letter from the drop down, select OK. the HD should now be available.

No luck here either. When I right click on the disk field nothing happens. When I right click on the title block(?) I get: Initialize Disk (faded), Offline, Properties and, Help.

Hello,
first of all I would just like to point out that I am not a native speaker so I apologize in advance for the mistakes I might make.
I have a problem with my external hard drive. The drive is Verbatim 47512. Last year I unplugged the drive without safely removing it first. When I plugged it in again it asked me to format the drive. As I didn't wanna loose my files I tried using Recuva and it worked. However, the process took too long and I was leaving for ten months the next day so I had to stop the process. I wanted to continue when I got back but the drive wasn't working at all. I couldn't even turn it on. I kept trying and after some time it started to work again. When I plug it in, I can't find it in my computer. But I can find it in the disk management. I'm attaching a picture, it says it's uninitialized and that it needs to be initialized. I don't know what it means and I'm scared it might delete my files. It also says that it's allocated and unknown. https://postimg.org/image/zci27fe6h/
I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and it says that my disk is bad. I don't know how to proceed, can you please help me? Or should I give up?

Have a 1TB Iomega USB3 external hard drive that worked well on both a desktop and laptop Win7/64 system. Now it shows up as unidentified and not initialized using computer/manage/storage/disk management. Disk Management also gives the optiin to initialize it but I declined because I would like to recover the data. The power light comes on and it spins up with both a USB3 or USB2 connections and is identified as an Iomega eGo drive when I use the USB eject function.
Hard Drive Sentinel does not recognize it at all. Any suggestions appreciated.

Answer:Previously functional USB3 external hard drive shows not initialized

1. Please post a screenshot of Disk Management with your external HDD plugged in. Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

2. It would indeed be prudent to recover the data before you try anything else on the HDD.

You may try to access the hard drive booting into a live Linux CD/pendrive.

Download Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-Compatible Build) v5.2.8 ISO from http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20Latest%20Release.htm

It is light and only 132.6 MB.

Make a Bootable pendrive with Rufus v1.3.2 (442 KB) http://rufus.akeo.ie/

It takes less than 2 minutes to create your bootable live Linux pendrive.

For more guidance on the recovery process directly get into the heading Recovering files from the non-bootable Internal Drive - applicable to recovery from any hard drive - in Lucid Puppy way to recover files from a non-bootable computer

You may also use this tutorial by Golden http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/256518-peppermint3-create-live-cd-dvd-usb-use-emergency-backup.html to create your bootable pendrive with Peppermint3 Linux.

My PC wouldn't boot off the SSD (with Win 10 OS). It said there were boot problems and tried to diagnose the problem but it doesn't boot. I'm now using the original HD with Win 7. I'd like to get the SSD working if I can. The SSD is OCZ - 240 GB or so.

But between last night and today, the SSD has gotten worse. I can't access it at all now. Last night I was able to access it as an external drive. What I did in between was a chkdsk of the HD just to make sure it was OK. Then this morning I saw that the SSD had problems.

Disk Management shows the SSD as disk 1, but it has no information on it. It just says the disk is unknown and uninitialized.

I saw a recommendation for Partition Wizard 9.1 Free. But that doesn't show the drive at all. I attached screen shots as a Word document.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a WD External SATA 1TB Hard Drive that has ~700 GB of family memories/movies/documents/etc and it is now connected to Windows 8.

The original housing it came in was unsurprisingly cheap and the connection piece broke. I re soldered it on and the connection was made but the drive threw nothing but errors. I figured I messed it up so bought an external case and assembled it. Now however, the drive does not show up under my computer but does in Disk Management.

Disk Management claims that the HD has the full TB unallocated and not initialized. I don't want to initialize it because I don't want to lose the information I have on it. Any idea on how to get this working?

I have downloaded and used the Data Lifeguard available at WD and the External has passed the Quick Test so drivers are all there and working.

Thanks

Answer:WD External Drive "not initialized" but has data on it?

Umm, I would try first connecting it back to whatever PC version you were using before (Assuming Windows 7) and seeing whats up.

If that does not work, try messing with the connection that you re-soldered and making sure its all done fully correctly, something may have gotten crossed.

ok so i got a Seagate? 500GB hard disk
model: Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS

Im on a laptop and connecting the drives with a Manhattan hi-speed usb 2.0 to sata/ide adapter with power supply

I open disk management with either one of them plugged in, i can hear the disk is running and all, I see Disk1 appear on my disk manager screen... it says unknown and not initialized right on the left on the virtual disk manager
and when I open this screen, it prompts me to initialize the disk

It says:
"You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it."
I mark Disk1 and select Master Boot Record as partition style, and when I click OK, there's an error message saying "the device is not ready"

it worked before, it is actually brand-new.

The first time it was used I installed it and formatted on my laptop running windows 7 64bit, then I tried it on a Mac and it wasn't readable, so it was re-formatted (the guy who did it told me it should work on both mac and windows... ), still empty... now i have this problem, I don't know what I can do.

I have the exact same problem with another seagate? barracuda but this one is 500GB 7200.11 ST3500620AS, this one isn't brand-new, it was on a desktop mac.

pleasee someone help me, I hope I made myself clear, my english is not that good.

Answer:external HDD can't be initialized "the device is not ready"

Hello erickegg69 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

From the screens you have there note the screen that actually follows the first when adding a new drive. That will provide the option for selecting a drive letter.

Before the first screen however look on the square section next to the main volume seen at the left side where it says "unknown". You first have to right click on that in order to turn the drive "online". Once that is done you can proceed to use the add new drive wizard and assign a drive letter.

Upon closing the wizard up you can then open any explorer window or Computer to see a new drive icon with the assigned drive letter you selected since the external drive will then have been initialized correctly.

For use on both Mac and Windows alike you would leave that drive as Fat32 but simply see the drive made active unless you no longer plan to use the drive on the other machine and strictly for Windows use. Once you reformatted the first older drive to NTFS it was no longer cross platform between the two OSs. This is why you had to reformat a second time back to Fat 32.

Hello all,
I'm suffering froma troubling problem with a Windows 7 system.
This system has a boot HDD (C and data storage RAID5 array (D. The system locked up hard requiring a power down to get Windows operational gain.

The sytem is fine now, except the ~3 TB RAID5 array is not seen by W7. The W7 disk managment snap-in reports that the 2793.97 GB "drive" exists, but the status is "Unknown" and "not initialized". Needless to say, the drve was online and contained LOTS of data before the crash. Due to it's size, the drive was GPT.

I ran a synchronize on the RAID 5 array and that finished w/o error, so I assume the actuall array is fine.

Any recommendations for what utllity/diagnostic/etc. to try next?

Further info: The RAID 5 is a creation of the AMD SB750 "southbridge", which uses tech licensed by Promise Technology.

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

NOTE
1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

Hey! Yes I am new to the forum here, as I am to Windows 7, but I have to give it up for Windows this time, Windows 7 is actually more stable, faster and easier to operate than even today's Vista. Although...

I have an Asus M51Se notebook. And it has not a huge drive, so I store most and all my files on an external HDD, a Western Digital 500gb sata HDD inside a Sharkoon Rapid 3,5" e-sata case, all conected through USB, with no driver cd, and should be driver-less according to the producers. Every time I plug the external hdd in Windows 7 cannot find the drivers and says its an unknown device, resulting in a very unpleasant "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

I have googled, I have searched, I have plugged it in and out unimaginable times. I have plugged the HDD out of the case put it inside my stationary computer and plugged it back in with no results. (My stationary ir running Windows Vista HP 64bit). And the stationary computer can find the device, and use it, even after uninstalling the driver, and plugging the device back in. It finds the disc when its in the case and when I plug it into the motherboard, but my Windows 7 running notebook will not.

I have seen some posts here and there, even on this forum about this problem, but those are all of no use to me. So is there anyone out there that can help me with this error? Please, it would be truly appreciated.

Answer:Unknown Device, External HDD

I have had the exact same problem. My proplem was caused buy a usb cable short. I also had the dreaded "unknown device" error followed by a You must format before windows can use this problem (the drive is already NTFS formatted). I also thought it might be a bad drive so I pulled another working sata drive from another box and tried it and it had the same problem. So I thought maybe its a usb port problem and moved it to a different usb 2.0 port. Still no joy. I then had the brain storm that its the cable, and sure enough pulled the "unknown HD" out popped it into another box and it worked.

Sorry to be so long winded and I hope this helps somewhat

When trying to delete a text file yesterday afternoon i saw an error message saying the file "was corrupted or unreadable and could not be deleted". i was able to remove everything i wanted to save from the external HDD and proceeded to reformat but was unable to do so and received a message saying "windows was unable to do so".

I decided to give MBRcheck.exe a chance as i recall using the scan a few months back to determine if the MBR was correct and the results showed that there was an unknown MBR code for this drive. i went ahead and ran TDSSkiller as well, just to be safe and it resulted in one medium risk file that was locked. i proceed to send to quarantine.

Is this a virus/malware issue or a hardware problem? If malware then i will follow through with the instructions and house cleaning, but i wanted to make sure i was in the right forum before i asked for guidance.

Thanks

Answer:Unknown MBR Code on External Seagate

If you suspect malware, you're in the correct area to get help

The first thing to try to rule out is hardware, if it's faulty then you'll have problems accessing the drive to check for malware. Try another USB, SATA or Firewire cable (whichever yours uses) and try the drive connected to a different port at the rear of the PC or to a different PC that is clean and fully secured with updated Antivirus.

I'm sure the experts here will be along later to give you further instructions on checking for malware.

Hello

Just a quick post about my fix to this issue. After getting my PC rebuilt by a colleague I got this issue. I noticed that he had mapped storage volumes to G & H which are usually used when I plugin USB devices. So my fix was:

1) deactivate these storage volumes
2) shut down (overnight as it happens).

I did also have a quick poke at the hard drives but didn't change the configuration.

I appreciate this error is generic but thought I'd post as it may help someone else with this VAGUE PIE-IN-THE-SKY ERROR MESSAGE.

Am Newbie so please be kind.

Answer:USB external hard drive comes up as unknown device

I'm not sure what you mean by Deactivate a storage volume?
All you needed to do was go to Start/Run and type diskmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Disk Management window, Right click the drive and choose Change Drive Letter or Paths, choose a different drive letter that is not being usd.

I've got my new T440s thinkpad recently. Unfortunatelly, I am not able to charge my battery. I've tried many different things to make it work but with no luck. Usually Power Manager shows 2nd battery status as unknown, sometimes says that "error occured". What is strange - one time, for a while, battery status and condition were good (this happend after I discharged completly the internal battery.Lenovo solution center says that "A communication error has occured".Do you have any idea what can be wrong? Is it software issue or simply battery is broken? Thanks in advanceLiosedhel

I recently upgraded to Win7 Ultimate (clean install) from XP 3/4 weeks ago, and for the last week or so am having problems accessing my USB external drive (although it worked ok at first).
When I connect the drive to my laptop, after a few seconds I hear a windows sound which tells me that the connection failed. In the meanwhile, the drive light displays solid for a moment but then begins to flash at a constant rate that seems faster than when operating normally and the drive cannot be heard.
I went into device manager and checked the properties for the "unknown device" and it was displaying 'code 28' stating the drivers have not been installed, but the last few evenings (after around a dozen or so attempts over several hours during each evening), the drive is somehow detected and is accessible.
I have also tried the following to try and solve my problem

- uninstalled the drive via device manager when displaying as 'unknown device' and rebooted. upon connecting the drive, windows tries to install the drivers but soon displays an error message stating that the drivers are not available.

- updated the bios to no avail

- went into disk management and refreshed drives to no avail
I also tried googling the device id when the drive shows as unknown (which is 'USB\VID_13FD&PID_1618&REV_0100') which brought up many results which seemed to include the line 'pnpdrivernotfound'
I would appreciate any help that anyone can offer, thanks in advance.

Answer:seagate usb external hdd - showing as 'unknown device'

Welcome to the Se7en Forums! FrEnZyUK

One suggestion given when buying any new external hard drive or flash drive often when simply being used as a storage device is to first reformat the factory Fat volume to NTFS for making it readily available. In 7 the support for Fat and exFat has returned allowing you to simply go into the Disk Management tool and assign a new drive letter for the drive. This will initialize the drive as part of the process making it available again.

If you have only a small amount of files and data on the drive presently you could simply elect to backup them up and reformat to NTFS while in the Disk Management at the same time as you custom assign a new drive letter. Windows will then remember the new letter that replaces the temp letter assigned when working.

With usb not so much eSata drives that are plugged in and unplugged often that will even be more of a help once a reformat is performed in automatically being reinstalled by Windows upon plugging the drive back in if unplugged at all.

Following a recent virus purge of my daughters desktop PC (using Malwarebytes), that terminated in a reinstall of Windows 7. When I came to reinstall the contents of the Toshiba external 1TB 2.5" HDD that had originally been formatted NTFS and used for backup purposes, I was confronted with an inaccessible array of ADI files that Win7 OS could not access.
In order to cut a long story short, I installed Linux Mint 16 (32bit) on an old (ex-Windows XP) Acer Aspire 3000 having replaced the XP operating system completely. I can now open the file which displays in binary form only. I would therefore appreciate any help and/or assistance in order to download the contents of the Toshiba backup HDD onto the desktop hard drive. Thanking you all in expectant anticipation.

Answer:External HDD backup files of unknown origin?

Hi Brink thanks for the information supplied by yourself and Jacee dealing with the inability to access various file formats. It is possible that this could be the solution to my recent enquiry :-http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/378582-external-hdd-backup-files-unknown-origin.html
Unfortunately I did not receive any response to my query which sadly could be due to my poor explanation of the necessary details required by you experts. The file format that I am having trouble with is "ADI" or .adi & would therefore like to know if this will be added to your list in due course. If there are any further questions appertaining to my query then I will be only too pleased to respond.
Thanking you in advance for any information you are able to proffer.

Hi, my 1tb external hard drive cannot be found in 'my computer'. It can however be found in diskpart, disk managerment, and disk manager, though it does not have a drive letter, shows as unknown and is not and wont initialize. I also get a crc error when trying to do anything with it. There is no data on the drive so i dont need to recover anything, just wanted to know if there is any way that I can use it again? Here are some screenshot I have taken.

Answer:External HDD not show up in my computer (Not Initialised and Unknown)

It`s showing in Diskpart so.....

Have you tried using Diskpart to set it up ?

Just look up the Diskpart tutorial, it will show you how to do it.

Why is F marked active ? Do you have an operating system on it ?

Is it an external drive ?

If not, it should not be marked active.

Hi there people!

I resort to come bothering you people, since this very nasty accident hit me and I'm in need of more knowledgeable minds than my own to make the right decisions... Here's my story:

I was browsing files on an external 3,5" HD (3Tib) connected via a big HUB (13 ports, but it's backed up by it's own power, not just USB-powered, plus only 2 ports were then switched on -- the 2nd port was for another 2,5" external HD of 750 Gib).
Anyways, I'm not sure entirely what happened, but it seems that I got mixed up at some point (really puzzling, as I'm very careful with this usually!) and must have turned off the HD, thinking I was actually turning it on...
The result was (unfortunately as expected) that the drive was corrupt, and is now unrecognised by Windows (I'm at my parents' and all I can use here is an old laptop HP/Compaq Presario C750 with bad old Vista installed on it): the drive gets its previously assigned Letter (O:\) but is now "Unknown File System" and I'm asked to format it. I'm all the more upset by this situation that Ihad already about 2,5 Tib filled with very valuable contents on that HD...

Using EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard latest version (which I bought a while ago as I've had such issues before), the software does seem to detect many things from the original NTFS filesystem on that HD, since it shows the original Label I gave it ("O:\AudioContent") and lists me a... Read more

While running a duplicate file finder on my external hard drive I found over 30,000 files which are .bmp. I do not know where they came from Many are "copies" of my photographs. Since I never use .bmp for saving my photos I have not been able to explain this. There are many more which are not my photos but things like web pages, etc.
Since the only way I can delete all of them is to click each one separately. I am just wondering if I do a search of that drive using .bmp and then get a list and can delete all. Is there ever any file that is .bmp that should not be deleted? Hoping that there isn't so I can just get rid of all of these in one swoop.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi !

I have this kind of a problem: I am working with my external Toshiba 3,5 alu case HDD 500GB and after a while of copying files into laptop it dissappears and shows up that device wasn?t recognised.
Can this be caused by not enough power in USB port?

THX for any help or workaround

Answer:Satellite A200-1SI - external HDD after a while shows up "unknown device"

Hi there,

yes this may be caused by the fact there is not enough power supplied by the USB port. firstly note that 3.5inch external USB hard drives are usually designed to be used with desktop systems due to their higher power requirements (this is also the reason that many require an external power supply of their own). my suggestion would be in future buy a 2.5inch external USB hard drive designed for use with laptops. another reason that the hard drive may disappear while copying files is that there may be a problem with the USB cable connection between the laptop and the external HDD. i would suggest checking that both ends are plugged in securely and not to place any pressure on the cables and to keep them stable.

i hope this helps you with your matter

Hello all,

A customer of mine has recently purchased a new PC. I am in the process of copying her folders on her old PC to an external hard drive (500GB in size) so that they can be transferred to her new one.

The old PC is running Windows 10 and is currently using ~400GB of their 1TB hard drive. The new PC is running Windows 7 and has two 1TB hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration.

I attempted to copy over everything via the GUI (select, copy/paste) and that was going to take too long. A colleague discovered robocopy, so we used that. We used robocopy c:\{path} e:\{path} /S /COPYALL /r:0 /w:0. It worked for one portion of data which was around 20GB in size. We used the same command for another chunk of data that was around 80GB. However, we took a look at it later only to realize that it couldn't complete due to the external hard drive being maxed out. We had cleared everything our prior to starting this new process. I asked the customer if they had any backup process running to which they replied they did not. The thought was that it may be running a backup to our disk. Does anyone have any ideas on what may be happening and if so, what is a possible solution?

TL;DR: I'm trying to copy over ~80-100GB to an empty 500GB external hard drive. When copying it over, it maxes out the hard drive space for some unknown reason.

Hello,
This is my problem... I had to reinstall windows and all is going well so far (just very tedious), but after plugging in my external hard drives one of them has folders that I believe are from Microsoft Update installations (which included a couple of device drivers) or possibly from HP device updates... (they look like this L:\7f6b418af72e04b214924794b837d42e). I'm guessing these folders should be appearing somewhere on the C drive similarly to the M$ update logs within the Windows folder. Or maybe they should just be disappearing after the update is installed. I'm not worried about these and feel comfortable deleting them, but I'd like to just not have it happen. I think this has happened to me before, but it was a long time ago and I cannot remember the solution.

I'd appreciate any ideas as to how to have these files route to the correct destination.

Thanks much in advance,
Sbergstc
