Preferred Solution: Unable to adjust brightness - Thinkpad x230

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, So recently I've noticed that I am unable to adjust the brightness of my Lenovo x230 display.  The Fn+F8/F9 hotkeys do absolutely nothing.  All other hotkeys work without issue. I change the brightness in Lenovo Power Manager, apply, and no change.  This applies to both AC and battery power. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Mike Edit:  Fixed by installing Windows 8.  I guess it's about time I get used to it!

Answer:Lenovo x230 - how to adjust screen brightness?

What you could've tried before was installing the Hotkey driver.

Hi, Just to preface this post:  I have scoured this forum and Google for a solution, but none of the proposed solutions seem to work. I have a ThinkPad T500 (2081, CTO) that I bought in 2009 that came with Windows Vista. In 2010 I upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium. Recently, I reformatted and reinstalled everything. I can't adjust the screen brightness or switch between discrete and integrated graphics card. When I disable the discrete graphics card, the system reverts to the integrated one which allows me to adjust the screen brightness. The card is an ATI Mobility HD 3650 (256mb). I have:-Updated the BIOS-Most Recent Video Drivers-Lenovo Keyboard Drivers Basically, every update from Lenovo that I can have for my laptop I've installed. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the video card. Hi, I can't adjust the screen brightness on my X250 at all. I have Windows 7 on it. When I press + and - the slider thing shows up, and it goes up and down, but nothing happens. It's really bright and have already been like this for weeks. The colour is slightly wrong as well. Restarting, shutting down or closing and opening the lid does nothing. It got stuck after I disconnected it from my docking station, so I tried connecting it and disconnecting again - nothing. I've updated Windows and nothing there as well. I'm getting really frustrated since nothing works.. Is there something to do? Please help..

You can start with the uninstallation of power/energy management program. then move on to the power options involving brightness (what the lid does when open or close, etc). Check also under settings in the charm bar.

I am having this problem from past 3-4 days I am unable to adjust my laptop's brightness. The functions keys for brightness won't work. I also tried changing the power settings to high performance and balanced, that also doesn't changes the brightness.
I also tried manually adjusting the screen brightness. The slider moves but the brightness is not changing.

I am using IntelR (HD) Graphics family.
I tried changing it back to Microsoft basic display adapter but that also didn't help.

I got windows 8.1 installed from the factory itself and everything was working fine until past few days.

Any suggestions??

P.S. => I am using a Lenovo G50 series laptop

Answer:Unable to adjust brightness in my windows 8.1

First off, figure out whether or not your laptop has an ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) which will automatically adjust the brightness (if all goes well). Usually it won't override a manual setting, but it's kind of up to the developer which one takes precedence. As for the keys not working, you probably removed (or didn't install after a Windows reinstall) the helper software that controls these functions.

I recently purchased G50-45 series 80e300gyin notebook with AMD A8 processor and dos based. Installed windows 8 and updated to windows 8.1. Also installed (Beema) AMD Driver (VGA, HDAudio, SATA) for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) drivers but still I am unable to adjust the screen brightness, by default it is at full. Please help me to resolve this issue.

Answer:Unable to adjust brightness- G50-45 80E300GYIN

hi nikunjpadhiar,

Welcome to the Forums.

When you installed the (Beema) AMD Driver, did you remove any previous traces of the AMD Display driver?

If not, can you try the following:
1. Navigate to the Control Panel (Icon Views) > Programs and Features and uninstall anything that relates to AMD Display Driver / AMD Control Center.and reboot. When finished, navigate to the Device Manager > Display Adapters and the driver should show a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

2. Install the (Beema) AMD Driver (VGA, HDAudio, SATA) for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) and reboot. When done, the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter from the Device Manager should now change to an AMD Radeon Display and check if you can now adjust the brgithness.

In addition, check this post by marcus34 as he was able to resolve the issue.

I have a HP Notebook 15 running on Windows 10. The Processor is Intel Celeron N2840. I recently Refreshed my Laptop To get rid of some useless softwares. After this refresh, Im not able to Adjust the screen Brightness through Display settings (the Option to adjust the Brightness is unavailable) or Keyboard (F2,F3) and the button in the Action Center to adjust brightness is also not available which I used to have Before. Also I updated my Intel Graphics Driver as directed in many Websites and also the Monitor Driver. But all these methods are not fixing my trouble. Further more, The "fn" key in keyboard is also not functioning, so im kinda' screwed with all these trouble.  It would be very helpful if anyone can mention any fix, Thanks In Advance !. P.S. I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

First, techincal specs.
I have a Windows 8.1 Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332, with a AMD A6-4400M APU processor with integrated graphics. My display adapter, according to device manager, is a AMD Radeon HD 7520G.

Now, my problem is that I'm unable to adjust the screen brightness of my laptop. I haven't made any recent changes, and I noticed this about a week or so ago(I don't typically change my laptop brightness, so this could have been happening for longer). In the mean time, I've tried rolling back my display drivers, with no success, and also updating to the latest driver set, which has also not worked. I'm not sure where to go from now, does anyone have any ideas to fix this?

Answer:Unable to adjust laptop screen brightness

Welcome to the Forums.
What happens when you try to adjust the brightness? Is there no setting? Setting grayed out? Or you change the setting but nothing happens?

If it changes for an instant, then reverts to what it was, adaptive brightness may be enabled.

HI,

I have recently aquired a Portege 3490CT and have installed Windows XP on it. Everything is working correctly except that I am unable to adjust the screen brighness. I believe this can only be done through software, which does not support Windows XP.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I can adjust the brighness in DOS using TSETUP but Windows seems to overide any adjustments that I make there.

Thnaks in advance.

Answer:Portege 3490CT: unable to adjust the screen brightness

Hi

To use this function you need especially drivers.
This unit was not delivered with Win XP and I have also not found this especially drivers on the Toshiba driver page.
I assume if you want use the WinXP you have to forgo this function.

I've noticed, today, that I'm suddenly unable to adjust my screen brightness. I have read half a dozen threads reporting the same problem; I tried all the solutions therein (from updating the driver and reverting to the most basic one to manually changing power configurations) and nothing worked. Unlike the vast majority of users who had this problem, this hasn't happened following an update to windows 8.1 (which I did several months ago -- and the adjust was working fine after that).

This might give you a hint:

* As I try to adjust it using the fn key (as I had always done previously), brightness goes up or down just one level -- and that just 'cosmetically', as in fact nothing changes. The indicator gets stuck approximately in the middle of the bar, unable to reach the extremes.

* There is more: on power management, I chose the lowest possible level of brightness when working on battery, just to see what would happen. I then disconnected my laptop from main power, and... the brightness indicator did go down to the lowest level, YET brightness remained unaltered in fact.

Anyone, please??

In the past few days my laptop has been behaving oddly. At first it would not allow me to adjust the brightness, neither with the function keys nor the slider. This would happen after it awakened from sleep.
It also does not like to restart now. It hangs at the "Restarting" screen until I force it to turn off by holding the power button.
In, addition, the keyboard stopped functioning. This has only happened once, though.
I ran system file check from the command line. It found corrupted files, but was unable to fix them. I ran it again in "Safe Mode" and got the same results.
I tried rolling back the display adapter. This did not solve the problem either.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the OS installation disk? Can you boot from that and run the startup repair utility?

I've recently installed Windows 8 using an official Windows 8 install CD (UEFI mode) and am having an issue with the backlight. I can't adjust the brightness of the backlight using the slider in Windows 8; I can move the slider up and down but nothing happens.  I have installed the drivers found here but to no avail. Uninstalling the drivers has no effect either. When I uninstall the drivers, I am running Intel Corporation drivers 10.18.10.3958.After installing the drivers from the link above, I am running Intel Corporation drivers 9.17.10.2932. Also, I have 2 "Graphics Properties" menus when right clicking the desktop, which is odd. One of them opens the "Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel" (which works fine) and the other opens a non-functional "Intel HD Graphics Control Panel", where it does not show any displays.I cannot roll back the drivers as other threads have suggested, as there is nothing to roll back to.What can I do?

Answer:Unable to adjust brightness after fresh Windows 8 install

I would suggest you look at the list of downable utilities for the model and Windows 8.1 you have. There is a tool to support the manufacturer specific control buttons along the top row. I suspect thats the problem especially if this worked before upgrading. The other directy is there because you did an inplace upgrade (guessing from Win7). Install various tools from Lenovo for your model. I don't know which one specifically does the key support. Your Intel Graphics package should be the one they supply as well but its unlikely the control is within it but entirely possible.

The FN keys are not controlled by window/drivers. They are controlled by BIOS. Have a look through your bios settings and make sure that everything looks ok. If no luck, check for bios update.

Using the laptop on battery, when I press on F11-12, the brightness meter is shown on the upper left like usual, but it won't move up or down.  Yet I think it's strange that all other places I can adjust brightness are fine, and especially strange that everything is working totally fine on AC power.
I tried uninstalling the Generic PnP monitor and reinstalling, but to no results.  Also, both my power settings on battery and on power indicate no adaptive brightness.

Answer:XPS 9550 - Function keys cannot adjust brightness on battery, but can adjust everywhere else (action center, power settings)

The fact that it works on AC adapter means that this is strictly a software driver issue or operating system issue. Not a laptop hardware issue. Reinstall the chipset drivers (7) one at a time, restarting after each one. Then reinstall the Dell Command Power Manager, restart and retest.

Answer:Why am I unable to adjust brightness after updating my HP laptop rom Windows 8.1 to Windows 10?

Most probably, the upgrade to Windows 10 uninstalled the third-party drivers that control those custom key settings in your keyboard (it happened to my Samsung Laptop as well). You can do two things:
1. Utilize the new quick settings found in the notification area of Windows 10 - you should see brightness as one of the quick access icons there;
2. Search for and re-install the custom HP software that enables those keyboard features and settings in your Laptop.
I did both of these two, I prefer going with #1 for consistency.

Windows 7 pre-installed
CPU: Intel Core i3 380M
Motherboard: Dell Inc. 07FXP8
Graphics: Generic PnP Monitor ([email protected]) on Intel HD Graphics
Dell Inspiron N5040

Beginning today, I opened my laptop from sleep and noticed the display was at its lowest brightness setting. I then tried to restart it to see if that would solve it, no luck. I did some googling and found out it could be a problem with the graphics driver. I then disabled it and enabled it. Now the brightness is at its max settings.

The function (FN) + F4, F5 (the keys to adjust the brightness settings) do nothing. The brightness status will show up on the screen and only change 1 or 2 notches.

I then realized I should have a way to adjust the brightness via the Power Settings in the Control Panel. I even confirmed this with a friend. I should have the sliders to adjust the brightness but I do not. It's very strange.

Answer:[SOLVED] Can't adjust brightness, missing brightness sliders

Hello,

I would suggest uninstalling the graphics driver and get the latest driver from the Dell Support site installed.

My screen brightness using FN+F11/F12 and also in the advanced power settings slider won't adjust the screen to anything other than brightness and minimum or brightness to 100% when I move the slider.  It shows the percentage moving up and down, but the screen stays 100% until I'm on the lowest setting,  then it goes right to minimum.  I received a bunch of Lenovo updates on the first Wednesday of this month and I've had several issues since then, I tried reverting back to previous drivers, but it made no difference, so I'm back on the latest drivers.

Hello, I have a Thinkpad X230 running Windows 10 operating system.  Recently I started recieving the following message upon startup. There was a problem starting C:\Program Files (x86)\Thinkpad\Utilities\PWMTR64V.dll Reading through other forums I realized that the Power Manager is not supported on windows 10, I had upgraded from 8.1.  I tried uninstalling the Power Manager but it is not in the Programs and Features.  I also tried installing the latest version of the Power Management Driver for windows 10, but upon reboot I got the same message.  How can I uninstall the Power Manager, as I am not able to uninstall the program the traditional way?

I recently got a Thinkpad x230. When using skype (for instance) all the settings for my webcam have to be set up manually. Moreover they seem not to stay as set. Finally, if the light conditions check I need to readjust manually. I have the built-in Windows 7 and everything is up to date (Windows and drivers). Every laptop I've had so far (even really old ones) used to adjust the settings automatically on the fly when light conditions changed. Is there any way to make my Lenovo do this? I cannot believe it is impossible. Thanks.

Answer:x230 Webcam auto-adjust

Am I the only one experiencing this problem? It would help to know if I'm alone out here.

Answer:Re: Cant adjust brightness

Hi: The only suggestion I can offer would be for you to install the graphics driver and restart the PC. This package provides the driver that enables the Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. If highdefinition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp78001-78500/sp78245.exe

Ok I've had vista for a long time, but I switched over to XP and everything is perfect except from one small detail that is kinda big for me. I can't adjust the brightness in my laptopIn vista all I did was press fn left/right arrows to adjust it. And from what I know this is the way you do it in most laptopsNow in this XP I had to install all drivers. Specifically from this page http://www.laptop-software.com/acer-softwa...5738zg-drivers/when I install the graphics driver, VGA intel driver for vista is the one that's used for my computer from that list, the brightness just goes to the max apparently and I can't use fn arrows to adjust it. I CAN use fn arrows up and down to adjust the volume so there is definitely something fishy here. If I uninstall the driver I can use fn to adjust the brightness normally so I know the problem is when I install the driverthis brightness is driving me crazy! the driver bring something called Intel Graphic Media Accelerator which has an option for brightness, but it seems as if that's a different type of brightness cause it just makes the screen duller. You can actually still see a lot of brightness coming out from the computer but the screen is very dull. And it still damages my eyesany help?

Hello everyone,
I have Windows 10 and I can't adjust brightness with latest video drivers (from Dell and from Intel\Nvidia also).
Can you help me with this issue?

Answer:XPS 14 can't adjust brightness

I found another thread on this issue that solved my problem. "en.community.dell.com/.../19526400"
I have Intel UMA graphics and only had to update the one registry.
I needed to change only the first line in registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000] "FeatureTestControl"=dword:0000ffff
Here's a good Microsoft page on how to edit your registry file. Be sure to follow the steps to backup your registry first.

Hi, Try the following. Download the graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72370.exe When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp69501-70000/sp69575.exe When the Chipset installation has completed, do not restart as prompted - instead, open your Downloads folder, right click on the graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking if the f2/f3 buttons function. Regards, DP-K

I have also tried using a previous version of the drivers. Nothing has worked so far. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:can not adjust brightness

Hi: If the brightness is stuck on maximum, you probably need to install the graphics driver. The problem is that HP only supports that model for W10. See if this W8.1 graphics driver works... This package provides the AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver and Catalyst Control Center for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. For notebooks with switchable graphics modes, this package includes drivers for both graphics processing units (GPUs). Switchable graphics enable users to switch between a power-saving graphics mode (normally used under battery power) and a high-performance graphics mode. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72501-73000/sp72773.exe

Hi! I have an ASUS VS238 monitor. I'm trying to change the brightness settings---way to bright. I push the contrast/brightness button on the bottom of the monitor and a little box pops up with brightness. I click on the up/down buttons on my keyboard and nada. Nothing happens. After a few seconds the box disappears. I've tried using the cursor, but as soon as it tries to enter the brightness box it disappears. I've tried the menu button, and the up down buttons don't work, but if I push the menu button again, it drops down to standard. I push the button again, and I get a box asking yes or no. It's set on no. I push again and it returns to standard, push again and I'm in a back and forth loop. How do I get the buttons to work? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would assume that the Fn keys relate to accessability options and they come from emachines. what driver upgrade have you done so far?

It could be your display drivers.

Google "(insert your computers brand and model number here) display drivers", click the relevant link and install them as per the instructions given on your manufacturers website, and restart your computer.

Ca someone please help?? I have a G575 laptop and currently cannot adjust the screen brightness, it's stuck on the lowest setting when the laptop is plugged in and unplugged. It isn't a problem with the function keys as volume still works, but when I try to increase the brightness the brightness indicator comes up, shows as being on the minimum setting, then disappears. I have amended the power plans, adjusted screen brightness in Control Panel, reset power plan to default options etc but nothing is working! If someone could please offer assistence that would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Can't adjust screen brightness!

Hello Confusion and welcome to Lenovo community,

The issue is happening due to driver compatibility,

Kindly make sure the AMD video driver which is installed should have the driver version  8.862.6.5 and you must be using Lenovo Energy Management Software version 6.0.1.5

If all the driver and software version is proper then uninstall the video driver and restart the system then install the video driver again.

I hope this should resolve your issue.

Best Regards,
Tanuj

What drivers did you reinstall?  Because the brightness control won't work without the graphics drivers installed. Also, for whatever drivers you did mess with, did you download them off Lenovo's website, or the device manufacturer's website?

I have no problem with most of the things except for the ability to adjust brightness.

The screen seems to be at the maximum brightness, which in turn causing my eye to hurt after some time of usage.

Any idea why? I need some help here.

Dear Lenovo Staff, I have the following issue with my Lenovo E 555 and Windows 8.1 64 bit: I cant adjust the brightness of my screen. When I'm pressing the F5/F6 key on the keyboard to lower or higher the brightness, the display on my screen shows me that the value is being adjusted to whichever value I want - but there is no actual change, the screen just stays fully bright. Now if I look into the device manager the graphic card is being shown as "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" althought there should be a Radeon R5 in there. I tried re-installing driver, de-and re-activating them, did not work. It seems to be a common problem, I found some posts about similar problem with the E 555 but none of them worked. May you help me out? Thanks! Maurizzio

So I have read a lot of diffrent ways to solve this problem and I have searched for hours looking for a solution, yet nothing i've tried has worked for me. Whenever i press the fn key and try to adjust brightness then it does't, it does pop up the slider at the corner but it only moves upwards and downwards only one level yet the brightness wont change even that much. I only found one other person that had this problem and he got it solved, but he had an Asus laptop and he got it fixed with some Asus drivers but i have a Dell Vostro laptop. One of the biggest suggestions i have found that has worked for people has been to install some older display drivers, but that hasn't worked for me either.

I recently purchased an hp pavilion desktop + 24" monitor combo. Its running windows 10. When I first boot it up, I looked for updates. There were 8 updates. I updated everything. Both before and after updating, there was no option to change the brightness. I spent a while googling ways to fix it. I did this.....Control Panel > Device Manager > Display Adapters >Graphics card> Driver > Update Driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick. Choose Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. After this, the brightness tab showed up. The only problem is, it doesn't do anything. 0% and 100% are both the same. It is so bright it's hard to look at the screen.

My monitor is a 24" HP 24uh. According to someone on another forum I asked on, it's an older monitor and many people have had this issue. He suspected that it was too old for the updated drivers to work, and I may be out of luck. I can't continue using this computer when it's so bright it gives me a headache. I purchased it for my daughter to use for school, but it's so bright it hurts her eyes.

I'm not sure where to go next. I believe everything is updated, and nothing helps. It's connected by VGA. I was told to try an HDMI, but I'm not sure how that would fix it. Any help is much appreciated!

Hi, Here are some common ways to adjust the brightness. Open windows Control Panel, open Windows Mobility Centre and adjust the brightness here. On a lot of notebooks, tapping f3 will often increase the brightness ( with f2 reducing it ). Open windows Control Panel, open Power Options, click Change Plan Settings next to your selected power plan and you can adjust the brightness here. Regards, DP-K

How can I adjust the display brightness in XP? On battery power, the display automatically dims. I want the display to stay at a constant brightness when on battery or on AC power.

When plugged in, my aging laptop's LCD brightens, however it seems as if the power supply cannot handle the increased load, so there is a very annoying flicker; it gets dim, then bright, over and over. Could this be an inverter problem or the backlight or the power supply, or any combination. This is an HP, for anyone has any experience with HP laptops.

I just got my E420 yesterday and I'm quite happy with it... but my battery is a bit loose on the laptop which kind of annoys me... and the right button makes a clicky noise when I press it, like the bottom right side of the keyboard isnt fully intact. Lastly, the brightness stayed constant when i tried to adjust it... I've tried using the keyboard (F7 and F8), i've also tried it changing the settings thru Power Manager... but no luck ;( What can i do to fix this? >_< Another question, does the laptop use energy directly from outlet after battery is fully charged? Like it doesn't use the energy from battery and having the battery charging constantly...

Answer:Can't Adjust Brightness on E420!

hey MaggieThinkPad,on the part of the brightness, uninstall Hotkey and Power Manager. go to http://support.lenovo.com and download the latest and install.and nope, the battery will stop charging when it is completely charged. So when its at 100% and the adapter is connected, the laptop will use adapter power.
