XPS 13 9360 - Audio issues - Headphone Jack not working - Realtek MaxAudio menu comes and goes.

Question: XPS 13 9360 - Audio issues - Headphone Jack not working - Realtek MaxAudio menu comes and goes.

I’m usually terrible at doing my fair share of posting solutions on the internet but found time for this one. Come on Dell! My wife just bought me this great new XPS for Christmas and the headphone jack first requires me to tell the laptop that there is a headphone plugged in to work…..then the menu disappeared altogether and the headphone jack was useless. My kid’s (2 year old) ipad seems to have no issues detecting a headphone plugged in and he laughs at daddy struggling with his new laptop. Solution: I gave updating and rolling back drivers provided by Dell and went to the Realtek site and downloading their drivers and installing. (HOME > Downloads > Computer Peripheral ICs > PC Audio Codecs > High Definition Audio Codecs > Software). I at least got the headphone jack to work again, but will apparently just have to deal with the “MaxAudioPro” menu that appears and asks me what I just stuck into the headphone jack. I verbally say “well MaxAudioPro, it is a headphone jack with a image of a headphone next to it, what do you think I plugged in?”
Again, Come on Dell. Fairly steamed here. ….brand new laptop, I’m not going to return it because it was a very expensive gift, and I won't dedicate time to sit on the phone with tech support because of a home issue, and I don’t need high end stuff. I just need the brand new laptop to work or for it to fix itself with the darn (and somewhat intrusive) “Dell System update” that should know that there is apparently drivers available that work.
Furthermore, I understand if this is a new issue and you need a couple months to get out in front of this, but there are posts all over that discuss "realtek audio issues Dell XPS" for years now...
I have about a 25 one and off again relationship with Dell, I root for my friends in Austin to get this figured out.

Preferred Solution: XPS 13 9360 - Audio issues - Headphone Jack not working - Realtek MaxAudio menu comes and goes.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: XPS 13 9360 - Audio issues - Headphone Jack not working - Realtek MaxAudio menu comes and goes.

Because they moved to the combined audio port, they removed the option to turn off the popup. So you will likely see that continue. It can be useful if you use multiple devices, such as External Speakers so you can set preferences for each device.
One thing about the process I find irritating is having to select the OK button, even when the popup shows the correct device. They need to allow the ability to just use the enter key or any key to continue the process if the correct device is already selected..

There have been quite a few threads on this so can we assume you have gone through the Sticky?
You do or do not get a popup when you plug in the headphones?
Most phone earbuds will work but I did see one with a 4 ring (5 connector)  plug which may have a problem....

Hi guys,

I've signed up here to try and get some help with this issue in particular. After having a quick Google around I've seen that it is a fairly common issue for headphones or earphones to sound tinny on Windows 10 with Realtek HD Audio. However, the only fixes that I could find were driver updates are disabling all sound enhancements. I've tried both of these fixes but yet the problem persists on my end.

Has anyone had this problem before or have any suggestions that may fix the issue? I imagine I'm missing something simple but can't think what it could be for the life of me.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

James

Hello BleepingComputer

I just upgraded my computer a few days ago, and I am having problems with the Front Jack Audio/Headphone.

Normally, I set my Headphone to run simultaneous with my Speaker with Realtek HD audi/Stereo Nix (Disable Front Jack Detection and vice versa), and I could change the volume on both devices separately.
But since I changed the motherboard, when I have realtek installed, it doesn't have the Headphone setting in Sound/Playback.
The headphone work perfectly, but its linked to the Speaker's volume, which is really annoying.
Also, the Realtek layout changed from the last one I got, and doesn't have the "Disable Front Jack Detection" option.
(Picture: http://i903.photobucket.com/albums/ac232/notyellowasian11/Untitled-1_zps2242cdba.jpg)

So far, I have tired..
Installing an older version of Realtek driver;
Changing the audio setting in the BIOs (HD or AC97)
Changing the audio connector on the MOBO (Hd or AC97)
Tried multiple compinations with Realtek HD audio manager settings.
Cleaned every plugs/jacks related on that.

So far, I couldn't been able to get the Headphone tag at all when Realtek is installed.

Thanks !

hi,

Was your PC built for you or did you buy it in a shop?

If it was built for you, you might want to check that the front panel connectors are connected to the motherboard. I have seen many people forget to do this.

This happened when I first upgraded from Vista to 7 32-bit last year, when the front output jack stopped working, and I ended up getting an extension cord to travel from the rear port.

Now I've upgraded again, and none of them work. I've got up to date Realtek codecs.

Any help is appreciated. I know I need to give more information, but it's 3am here and I can't for the life of me think what it should be.

Thanks in advance

HEY, WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!
I tried everything, something isn't right here all of them don't fix my problem. I tried to restore to early time before I update it, it didn't work. I tried to follow every single instruction from the basic setting, still doesn't work. THIS IS WINDOWS FAULT, their market share is going down and they do little trick to make money. I tried to contact support and it says, "charge may apply." ONLY BECAUSE I HAVE OEM in my ****ing product ID.

My hardware is TOTALLY FINE, I believe yours too. WHY I know mine is fine? BECAUSE I USE UBUNTU ON THE SAME DEVICE! Open Source is your friend, you can trust it.

Just added another XPS 13 to our growing Dell family. Got everything set up juuust so... only now to discover that you can't plug headphones into the jack. It will only go in half way before becoming obstructed. Has anyone had this happen? I know what needs to happen next, it's just *** me off.

Answer:Headphone jack and the 9360.

We have had several reports this year of the jacks being especially tight in some of the newer models, but a complete obstruction would mean that something has gotten inside the jack, or it is damaged,  or a ma manufacturing defect.

When I listen to audio with headphones it comes out crackly and distorted, however, when I connect a speaker via aux cable in the same headphone jack it sounds normal. Audio from the laptop's speakers in normal as well. I have checked the headphones and it's not them that's the issue.  The crackling happens with all my headphones.
The problem is very recent. A couple of days ago I picked up my headphones unaware they were plugged into my XPS. The jack was pulled out of the headphone jack when I picked up the headphones and it's been an issue ever since. I would have immediately assumed that It's a hardware thing with the jack although, I didn't pull it out very hard nor did it come out at a weird angle so I can't see how that could've of broken it. Also, the jack still works perfectly with external speakers so I'm not too sure what's wrong with it.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be an enormous help:)

To add to my previous question, I have just descovered that my microphone dosn't work now either. I had a look around for the solution and I've managed to boost it so it picks up some sound, however, not much at all. Again any help or solutions would be greatly apreciated, although I might just have to take it to a profesional which I was hoping not to have to do.

So I have 150 OptiPlex 5050's, and a Windows 10 image deployed via WDS. I have the latest (8073) Realtek audio driver from the Dell site added to my WDS server, and when a machine is imaged the driver is installed. However, it doesn't install the Maxxaudio Waves application and services so when headphones are plugged in to the front jack Windows doesn't detect it and route the audio to the front jack.
If I install the DUP manually all the software is installed and the jack detection works fine, but if I run the DUP silently as a startup script I get the driver but not the Waves software. I have also tried running the Waves MSI that is installed with the driver, both scripted, through Group Policy and manually, but this also fails to install correctly.
I am assuming this has something to do with the reboots required after installation, but I can't manually install the driver on 150 PC's I need to automate it somehow.
Does anyone else have this problem or know of a workaround? I just need the headphone detection to work properly!

Hi all,

I've just installed Windows 7 and was very happy to see all the hardware working, even my Realtek HD Audio sound card, except the front jacks.

On windows XP I could solve this by with the Sound Manager that comes with the realtek drivers, and select the "Disable front panel jack detection" check box. Unfortunately, after installing the Vista drivers, I could not start he Sound Manager app beause it said it worked only on Windows Vista.

So, if someone knows a way I could start the manager or how I could set the "Disable front panel jack detection" by modifying the registry, or ofcourse, any other way to make the front jacks work, please help.

Thanks

I have a T500 - 2081CTO, and in the last week or less, the headphone jack has stopped working. There was a windows update recently so I'm assuming that's the culprit. I typically let it do it's auto-update thing without paying much attention, so I don't know what exactly changed or why it would kill the headphone jack. I've tried looking for Conextant drivers, but those don't seem to have changed since 2011. Win8 and the T500 has always been a bit flaky, but this at least has always worked. How can I test that it's the software and not a hardware issue? And if it is software related, what do I need to fix it?

Answer:Win8/T500 headphone jack stopped working. Conextant Audio Software issue?

Following the suggestion of my beloved brother, I stepped back through restore points and found one 2 weeks ago where sound still works. Since that time, I had installed a Java Dev Kit, SVN, redistributable C++, pando media booster, and Firefox. I'm leaning towards PMB being the culprit, but it's hard to say exactly. Windows critical updates (the first step back) didn't change anything.

So I've been having issues plugging my headphones into the audiojack on my xps 15 9560. I know the jack works because I can plug in my headphones *during* the installation/uninstallation of the realtek drivers and the audio will work. However after I restart the computer (after driver installs) the audio will only play through the onboard speakers. I can still connect a bluetooth headphone to the computer and this will work.
The audiojack seems really buggy and I don't know if it is an driver issue or a hardware issue. Can anyone help?

Hello Eight Forums.

My trouble is the audio output through headphones - background is louder than foreground (especially in music - I often cannot hear the vocals at all; movies however are mostly fine, for reasons unknown to me; but generally, the sound is always different in some way).

I only have one pair of headphones to test it with. However these always worked fine with previous machines, and still do work fine with my iPhone 4. Although they are surely not the case, I cannot with confidence say that if it were a loudspeaker instead things wouldn't have been different.

So this is either a software or a hardware issue.

Software

My computer (details at the bottom) came with a SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 equalizer program and RealTek High Def Audio drivers. I've uninstalled SoundBlaster hoping it would fix the issue (I didn't need an extra program like that anyway) but alas to no avail. Updating the RealTek drivers did no good still.

The only thing I haven't touched is the ghostly NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (can it be the source of my trouble?) - I only first noticed it now when copy/pasting the Belarc data. I'll try and find out about it in the meanwhile.

Hardware

I wonder if it perhaps has something to do with my audio jack (laptop's brand new, but you can never know). I have what appears to be mic, headphone, S/PDIF and line in jacks... Is there a way to use the microphone or the line-in to test the headphones? To see if the headphone out is broken.

Any help appreci... Read more

Answer:Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

Well, I uninstalled my audio drivers and noticed that there was a red led shining from inside the 3.5mm headphone jack, which I assume is a mini optical audio (digital) combo 3.5mm audio (analog) jack, and I am figuring that it determins if there is an optical plug or not using drivers, which is why it turned on when I unistalled my audio drivers. I would like to know for sure before I go and buy a mini optical to toslink adpater cable so I can get better audio quality out (the digital interface does not suffer from the interference that the analog does right?). I did some research (research is a bit of an overstatement) and found no sites that mentioned it, so I have decided to turn to the forums. So, is this an optical jack combo? And, how will it work in terms of the drivers, will it just auto select? Thanks.

Hello Forum, I hope I'm posting this in the right place...?

My device:G780 Notebook (M843RGE I3-2370M), Windows 7
Audio Driver: Conexant Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 Version  8.54.32.50 (Smart Audio: 6.0.131.0)

Situation:My headphone jack is broken. Repair is too expensive. Instead, I want to redirect the audio signal to the microphone jack.

Problem:This seems not to be possible with my SmartAudio interface (Screenshot below). But I found a screenshot of exactly the function I need called "Jack Configuration" in the Help section (second screenshot below). It looks like I dont have the right system configuration (whatever that means, I'm not an IT/PC expert ...) to use this feature.

My question:
Is there any way I can reconfigure the audio jacks on my notebook? Do I need another Conexant Audio Driver software and if yes, which one?

I'm grateful for any helpful reaction!

I need assistance in this situation as it's dells responsibility with regards to MaxxAudio, as it seems I have no other choice of audio driver.

Hi everyone,
New owner of the XPS 13 9360, great product aside from some coil whine. I have an issue with the audio port, from the WD15. Sometimes when I am listening to music, I will notice distortion for 3-5 secs, and then it will cut out completely. Then the audio interface is completely unavailable to the OS. Spotify will say "Cannot play right now", as if the interface is blocked.
I have BIOS updated to 2.2.1 on the XPS 13 9360, and WD15 F/W is up to date (according to the update tool). Realtek USB is updated to March 17, 2017, the newest one available on the website. I have no display issues or ethernet issues with the dock otherwise, but the audio issue is very annoying.
Can anyone provide a clue as to why this is happening? Even when it doesn't cut out completely, I'll hear an occasional stutter from the audio, as if audio interrupts are not being handled in higher priority over other I/O. Not sure what the problem is, but I guess I can also ask here and start a discussion with Dell support as well.
Thanks

Hi gamei56,Thanks for posting.Does this happen with other audio sources (ie: non-streaming)?  It may be your internet connection as the same thing happens on my Galaxy S7 at home when I'm listening to Pandora while working and using a lot of bandwidth. If it happens with all audio sources, then it may be a sound card issue.  You could try Dell Support Assist before calling Tech Support. cwww.youtube.com/playlist

How can I uninstall Dell Audio and only have the legacy Realtek Driver and Software in my XPS 14 (L421x)?
I installed some time age the default audio driver that I got from "Dell Drivers", this installed the "Dell Audio" + "MAXX AUDIO 4". I already uninstalled this thing, run CCleaner, deleted the folders, and downloaded and installed the legacy Realtek R 2.73 driver, but this thing (Dell Audio) is always installing with the driver.
My system audio is ridiculously loud. I need to put my system audio in somewhat 5~15 / 100% to get "normal audio", the only way I get realistic "normal audio range" is using my SteelSeries Wireless Headset with USB, this way the system audio goes to 100% automatically and I control the audio with the scroll located in the headset, even in 100% max audio, I get a "normal 100%", it's loud, but not EXTREME like the notebook audio!
Another problem, when I plugin my Apple Earpods, they simple doesn't work, I already tested them with tons of devices at home, and they are working great. The system doesn't even recognize them.
I think that everything would be resolved if I could install the Leagacy Realtek drivers & software, not this *** loaded with bloatware from Dell, I don't care about "MAXX Audio", "MaxxSense" and all this BS. If you look with attention, all the settings located in this "Dell Audio" menu are the same in the Real... Read more

Answer:No Audio/Headphone Jack is Lit up Red

That means Windows is trying to output to your SPDIF audio output, which is optical. Go into your Playback preferences, and change from Digital Out to Speakers.

Hi Forum,I use my computer a fair amount for music editing and my amplifier has just died on me.The Amp I was using was very cheap and didn't need to do anything special.Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to find anything similar now.All I need to do is convert an Audio RCA input to a headphone jack output. The signal needs to be amplified as the input signal static so simply connecting straight to the RCA won't work.Anyone got any ideas of the cheapest way to do this? Or anyone know where I can get a cheap amp with a headphone jack output and RCA input? As always, any help appreciated.

Answer:Audio RCA to Headphone Jack?

I should imagine a trip to your local Maplins would sort you out. They have a wireless RF Headphone set (L 47 AA) which plugs into your source and Bobs your uncle ! Alternatively they have a cheap audio amp on a board which you can easily convert to your requirements with a couple of RCA plugs and sockets. OR, try EBay ???

I've been watching the Playback devices in the sound control panel and I'm rather confused why this is happening. Essentially, if I am listening to music (or anything for that matter), and I plug in headphones, the computer acknowledges that headphones are plugged in, but keeps the sound going to the previous device. Once I stop the music, then restart it, the sound will go to the headphones. If I unplug the headphones, the sound does not go back to the speakers until whatever program outputting sound restarts.Any ideas on this one?Edit: I should specify. It seems to only route the audio to another device once the program itself is restarted.

Answer:Audio jack seems not detect my headphone

With what you stated you've tried, it could be an internal connection problem. Many Laptops have a small I/O board that is connected via a cable to the main board. If yours is this type, it may require "reseating" (unplug then plug back in) the connector.

Possible Solution:
Put Windows to Sleep, then wake it up. Headphone jack audio will be restored.

Problem:
Headphone jack randomly stopped outputting audio.
volume control at 100% and appearing to work normally. Laptop internal speakers worked fine.
Windows detects headphones plugged in, but no sound in headphones.
Uninstall sound card and realtek drivers, reboot did not fix problem.

Tested Linux live CD and headphones worked in Linux.
So hardware was definitely not broken. Only Windows was broken.

(I had this issue recently, so I'm leaving this here for search engine results and anyone who has this problem in the future)

Answer:Possible fix when headphone jack has no audio, everything else normal

Holy crap i love you! I reinstalled Windows 7 recently to fix this problem after trying just about everything, but after a couple of Windows updates my headphone jack wasn't working again. Found your post after filtering search results to recent hits and this trick worked! This problem only creeped up a short while ago, so maybe it has to do with recent Windows updates.

My external speakers work fine, are loud for a laptop, really.

When I plug my headphones into the headphone jack (and yes, it's the right jack), there's no change, the audio continues from the external speakers.

I had the motherboard replaced recently, as it went dead, by a Dell tech, so could he have put it back together incorrectly?

Thanks for your help.

It sounds like the headphone jack wasn't connected back to the motherboard, or perhaps the tech mixed up the mic/headphone jacks.

I have this flat screen tv that I bought not too long ago. I would like to connect headphones to this tv to watch regular television but there is one big problem. It does not have a headphone jack nor audio rca(red/white) outputs. This pretty strange since this is a fairy new tv. Is there any way I can connect headphones to this tv? Would I need any adapters like somehow converting one of the audio rca inputs to an output so I can use this cable:

Immediately whenever a headphone or earbud is plugged in, the audio is crackly, until I go to the realtek audio manager which doesn't have many options. once I change the Left-Right balance to being very one-sided, the cracks and pops don't occur anymore. However all of the balance is off, voices are not audible, and SFX or background music/tracks are output very bad.Testing the left-right balance, both play the same as if the headphones are mono audio.

Hello,

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and I have a problem with sound. When I plug my speakers in front panel I have output audio, but in back panel I don't.

My Audio Manager looks like this, but front panel is enabled and back panel is disabled. It does not recognize back (ANALOG) jack.

I tried with settings in this manager but without success, I cheked Control Panel > Sound and followed instructions but still no sound if speakers is in back panel. What to do?

Here's the deal. I'm using an Acer TravelMate 2480, running Windows XP SP2, with Realtek High Definition Audio drivers installed. I've had this issue before, and cannot remember how I resolved it - I've tried reinstalling the drivers, but no dice.

The issue is this: The speakers work fine, but the headphone output is nonexistent. This happened today; they were working fine yesterday. It seems to have happened after restarting my laptop, after a failed restore from sleep that was more than likely caused by having too much stuff open in Firefox when I closed the lid (I checked before closing it, the load was approximately 150 megs; I can give further details as needed). When I plug in the 'phones, there is a delay of about two seconds, then... nothing. Output from the speakers stops, but there is no sound from the 'phones.

The headphones in question work perfectly well with both of my MP3 players, so I know they haven't died. And, as I said before, this isn't the first time. Could it possibly be the jack going bad, and if so, how would I go about replacing it? Any input would be most appreciated.

Edit to above: The only driver reporting a problem in Device Manager is modem audio.

I have installed Realtek drivers, the speaker is working, but there is no Headphones in the option!?
Also I have reinstalled the drivers 5-6 tyms but still couldnt get Realtek audio manager.
Please see the attachments.

Also in Manage>Device Manager, I see only "High Audio Drivers", it suppose to be mentioned "Realtek Audio drivers" right?

Answer:No RealTek Audio Manager and Headphone

High Definition Audio Device says the Realtek is NOT installed. High Definition Audio is the generic, basic function, sound driver that Windows installs. This is also probably the reason your headset does not work.

Are you installing the driver from Gigabyte for your motherboard? If not, here is the link to the downloads

When I plugged in the headphone into the audio jack, there is no sound.  The sound is coming from the internal speakers.  I just installed System Mechanic and ran a system analysis.  I don't know if the registry was changed or what.  There is not a problem with the headphone; I tried another headphone and have the same problem.  The laptop detects the headphone, an icon shows in the Notifications area saying a device was plugged in.

Answer:No sound when headphone is plugged into audio jack

Hello. See if it will work when you switch from the Realtel driver to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.
[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]

I recently installed a Kinivo Bluetooth adapter (BTD-400) on my HP G71-340US laptop (Windows 7 64-bit OS).  Although the bluetooth adapter works as expected, my headphones don?t get any audio output when plugged into the laptop jack.  I checked the Manage Audio Devices / Sound / Playback panel and the ?Independent Headphones? (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) are in working order.  In fact, the Headphones can be seen changing status on the Playback panel when I plug in or remove the headphone connection.  So the hardware seems to be working fine just like before. I ran the Microsoft Troubleshooting tool and it did find an issue with the Independent Headphones but was unable to automatically fix it.  The problem was identified as: Audio device isn't set as default.  However, the "Independent Headphones" are listed as the "Default Communications Device" on the Playback tab. I?m not sure what I need to do next to resolve this issue.  Please advise. Thanks.Jeff

I have just bought a HP Pavilion 15 n-278sa laptop. It comes with a single 3.5mm port which is used for both audio out and line in. The laptop will work fine when outputting sound through the jack and a pair of headphones. However when i try to use the same port as a line in to record sound from an external device i am having some problems. I am trying to connect my mixer to the laptop using a standard lead, red & white one end and 3.5mm jack on the other. At first I was not getting any change whatsoever under the Recording tab in Sound settings. It just says 'not plugged in' under the microphone. After doing some research I found that the lead I was using, a 3 section plug, would not work and that was the reason there was no change when i plugged it in. I bought a 4 section plug & eureka, the laptop recognised the lead & showed this on the Recording tab. I thought my problem was sorted but this was not the case at all. As soon as I plug the red & white end of the lead into the output on the mixer, the laptop screen displays the 'not plugged in' message again as though I have unplugged the lead at the 3.5mm jack end. This makes no sense to me whatsoever?!? How can it recognise the lead is plugged in with no problems but then go back to not recognising it as soon as the other end is plugged into an external output?! Surely there must be a way of rectifying this as currently its impossible to record any sound on the laptop from... Firstly, I updated to Win 10 about 4 months ago and this problem only showed up yesterday.  Please! read this first (opens in new page and I pasted it just in case) http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Audio/HP-Envy-Desktop-headphone-jack-not-working/td-p/4010564 Scroll down to where "RandShouse" writes:"1. Click the Start button.2. Type Beats Audio and select the Beats Audio Control Panel.3. Select Advanced Settings from the top menu.4. Under Jack Information uncheck the box that says Enable auto pop up dialog, when device has been plugged in." What's happening is that my laptop's audio is working with earbud, headphones (anything that works with the headphone jack). But the problem is that terrible Beats software. So if I watch a youtube video with the earbuds then remove them, the laptop audio works perfectly fine! Then Beats kicks in and recognizes that I just unplugged a device when it says "You just unplugged a device." Which makes pefect sense. Because I just removed the earbuds. And for a few seconds, the audio from my laptop (speakers) works perfectly fine. But then Beats audio malfunctions and says that "You just plugged a device...". WHICH IS WRONG. So I tried to follow the steps written by RandShouse but step 4 is not even there. For some reason, I don't have the checkbox and I could go to Control Panel > Sys and Security > Hardware and Sound > Realtek. But I don't have realtek (which has it's better way of dis... Read more

Hello, I recently bought a Flex 2-14 with Windows 8.1 installed and upgraded it to Windows 10 (Education Version). I haven't tried the sound on the 8.1 system - directly upgraded to Windows 10.Symptoms:When I plug in headphones, the notebook doesn't recognize them. When I unmute/mute using the F1 keys sound comes through the headphone - terrible quality, though. When I change the volume using the F2/F3 keys that switches it back to the loud speakers and so on.It seems to me that the laptop doesn't recognize the headphones at all. When I look into the sound devices in the taskbar, there aren't any headphones listed.Failed attempts to solve the problem:Updating the drivers from the Lenovo website.Updating drivers from Realtek directly.Sleeping/waking the notebook.Turning off the multichannel option with the Realtek HD Audio-Manager.I think that's pretty much all I've tried so far. Most of the times the problem just stayed the same. Sometimes it wouldn't switch back to the speaker when pressing the F1/F2/F3 keys, but that is all that my attempts changed so far.I'm thankful for any hints!

Hey, I have a flex 14 ideaPad and up until recently everything's been running smoothly audio-wise (when headphones were and were not plugged in), except for randomly a couple of days ago when I plugged headphones into the jack and no sound came through either the headphones or the speakers, although the headphones were detected by the laptop. When I unplugged them sound would come through the speakers again. I tried again with a different set of headphones but the problem reoccurred which lead me to believe the problem is with the laptop, after searching for solutions online I decided to delete and then reinstall the audio drive (Realtech HD Audio Manager). This fixed the problem for a couple of days but now the same problem has returned. I am confused as to whether this is a hardware/software based problem as when I reinstalled the driver it did solve the problem so it couldn't really be hardware related. Would anyone know what the problem is? Should I just keep on deleting and reinstalling the driver? Again the headphones are detected by the laptop, they do not appear as their own playback device though (is this always the case?) Thanks, Tiernan

Just for discussion, to see who else has these issues.
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series. The headphone jack on my laptop is loose, meaning that my heavy cable unplugs my headphones. I've solved this issue by taping my headphones in, but obviously a bit inconvenient.
The other issue is the noise. It's a bit distorted (and no, it's not my headphones), and some "static" sounds can be heard, as if there is a poor connection.
Short of soldering in an extension (which might void my warranty), there isn't a solution for either of these issues.
Really, I'm just curious if I'm the only one. I'd like to hear of some other issues that might be unresolvable.

I've had my laptop for a little over two years now and i've run into an issue with the headphone jack. When i plug in a pair of headphones to the audio input, 95% of the time it works perfectly, but that 5% the music plays out of the onboard speakers, and I get a notification that a headphone jack has instantly been removed and inserted. I've attempted this with multiple pairs of headphones, so I have confirmed that it was not an issue with whatever headphones I am using. Reading around i've head I should reinstal my sound driver, which I am about to do, but I am wondering if there could be any other issues and what I should check.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro v.1607 build 14393.447 on an Asus Z170-A motherboard with Realtek HD Audio ALC892. I have speakers connected to the rear of the motherboard, and headphones via the front panel port.

A few weeks ago, the Realtek HD Audio Manager started behaving oddly. When I would plug in my Headphones, it wouldn't detect them, and would continue playing through the Speakers. Restarting seemed to fix that, but introduced a new issue.

Previously, when I would plug in my Headphones it would recognize them and switch to the Headphone settings and volume setting. It stopped doing that, and continued to display 5.1 Speakers in the Speaker Configuration and use the Speaker volume control. I keep my Speaker volume set to 50%, and my Headphone volume to 8%, but now it was always on the Speaker volume setting.

I tried updating to the latest ASUS driver, no difference. It would recognize the headphones when plugged in, but would stay on the Speaker settings and volume.

I uninstalled the driver, and Windows automatically replaced it with the default Microsoft driver, and it started working normally again. As soon as I plugged in my headphones it would switch the Playback device to Headphones and the headphone volume. Unplug, and it went back to Speakers and the speaker volume. Fine, I can live without the Realtek HD Audio Manager.

Answer:Realtek HD Audio not switching to Headphone settings

I would suspect the HD Audio connector from the front panel headphone/mic jack assembly. With the Realtek drivers and using the "HD Audio" connector for the front panel, it is supposed to auto detect and switch. With the generic, basic function, HD Audio drivers some of the auto detection is not there. Many cases have both a "HD Audio" and an "AC97" connector for the front panel headphone/mic assembly.

Yesterday I see that the volume icon on the Taskbar has a red X through it, and I have no sound. Clicking on it, Windows tries to correct the ... Read more

I got my Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop at the start of the year all was working well until my old headset was destroyed so I bought a new one (Razer Kraken ProV2). I plugged it in, the laptop has only one plug but it seems it works as both an output and microphone jack this worked well because the Krakens initial plug is an exact fit. Anyway MaxxAudio Jack pops and lets me configure everything, I'm done everything is working fine. A week later I update the audio driver, suddenly my headset is being picked up but not my microphone instead realtek uses the internal microphone in the laptop. For a while whenever I plugged in my headset MaxxAudio would give me the option to configure it does not anymore is there anyway I can force it to pop up. Or would there be any other solution to this.Things I've tried:

Uninstalling and reinstalling Realtek drivers.
Opening MaxxAudio going to advanced and enabling the pop-up

Currently I'm using a USB adapter to get everything working but I'm getting complaints of audio quality(the adapter was cheap its to be expected) and I would also like to use the USB port its taking up for other devices. Any solutions would be helpful.

Answer:Realtek audio will pick up headset headphone but not mic.

When you look at the output devices from the Speaker icon on the Taskbar, does it say Speakers/Headphones?
I saw such a thing one time and that was when the incorrect Realtek was install from online and not the one I had downloaded.

I have a PC built from an Asus P5B-WiFi Delux motherboard running Windows 8 Pro with Classic Shell which has an Realtek HD audio on board sound device. I also have a Creative X-Fi Gamer sound card installed. All of these were installed and working correctly.

One time I unplugged my speakers and when I plugged them back in again the sound was being played back on the Realtek headphone device. I couldn't find anyway to get it to play back on the Realtek speakers so I disabled the headphone device. Now I can't find the headphone device anywhere. Since rebooting the sound is coming out of the speakers device so that is OK but I'm still wondering where my headphone device has gone.

I will try re-installing the Realtek drivers but I'd like to know what happened.

Inspiron 15 3000 audio jack cant detect headphone, but dell audio can detect something plugged in. However the playback device at Sound cannot detect any headphone. Now i only receive buzzing sound in headphone. How to fix this problem??

Answer:Inspiron 15 3000 audio jack cant detect headphone

Hello. To test the headphone jack switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box).2. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names in steps 1 and 6.]
If there is still only buzzing even with the native driver, test using other headphones. If still no luck then probably hardware failure. Contact tech support for repair if under warranty.
If it works okay with the native driver then the Realtek driver is buggy. Try a different version of the driver. If you need help with that reply back with the full model name (something like "Inspiron 11 3147", etc) and which operating system it has.

Hello all, firstly; apologies for any headaches caused, however, until I buy a capture card I'm recording gameplay through a camera (the quality to my surprise isn't bad either). However picking up the audio requires me to turn up the TV volume quite a lot and also the mic (on my headset) to 100 + 20dB boost in Control Panel > Sound > Recording. As you can imagine, audio is average at best.

So, a cheap solution I thought would be to buy something like this, but I'm not entirely sure it'll work?
3.5mm Male to 2 Dual Female Plug Jack Stereo Audio Headset Mic Y Splitter Cables | eBay

The plan is to basically plug my headsets microphone jack to the red/pink one which will input the audio from that, but for the green, Plug in a male to male audio jack (one of these, which I already have):
From my TV to the green one. But I'm not sure if the green is for inputting or outputting audio?

So here's where it gets even more complicated:

If the above will work (or you can link me to something that does what I'm wanting), I want to actually listen to the TV audio through my headsets headphones. A simple solution here would be to tick "Listen to this Device" in Control Panel > Sound > Recording, however that also means listening to my voice as well (which I find very offputting).

So, because my headset is like this:

I was wondering if this layout would work (excuse the very quickly thr... Read more

You cannot attach mismatched impedance devices directly to the PC. Some motherboards will re-task the jack based on the device plugged in and others will go up in smoke or simply turn off the jack.

I have a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5 motherboard with on-board sound by Realtek, and my case is Thermaltake's "Element G".

I connected the front panel audio cable to the designated connection on the motherboard, however, whenever I plug-in my headphones, the stereo is reversed! Meaning that the headphone for the Right ear is playing the audio channel for the Left ear, and vice versa.

I end up having to wear my headphones in reverse to enjoy correct stereo sound.

I checked the front panel audio connection to the motherboard, thinking that maybe I plugged it in the wrong way or something, but apparently there is only one way to plug it in.

My first guess was that this was a design flaw with the case, and that they mixed up the audio channel connections in the front panel. However, when I plugged my headphones DIRECTLY to the REAR audio jack, it's exactly the same story!

The fact of the matter is that the on-board audio is mixing up the stereo channels! I actually remember that on my previous computer with on-board audio it was the same exact problem.

1) Is this a known issue with on-board sound cards in general?

2) Most importantly, is there any way I can fix this in Windows 7? Reverse the stereo channels so that they are outputted correctly?

Thanks in advance!!

Answer:Front audio headphone jack reversed stereo...

Never mind. I tried a different pair of headphones and there was no problem. Apparently my cheap "Sony" headphones were just defective.

Hi there,

I have an Asus G 50vt, a few days ago I had it hooked up to a stereo system and tripped on the wire connected to the Audio jack. The Headphone jack now has half of the head stuck inside and I was unable to remove it.

I am wondering if there is a way to reassign the headphone output to the Line in or Mic in jacks?
[/B]
Any help would be appreciated

Answer:Changing Audio Jack output (from headphone to Mic in/line in)

I know you can do that, I have seen it with some creative programs, im not too sure if your asus will do that, but I think the easiest option is to get that headphone jack out. you'd be surprised how easy it can be once you open your laptop up. another option (i would think - but try last) would be to get some super glue (only a little bit) and try to stick something to that headphone output to pull it out. - i was about to suggest soldering something, but dont worry about that, small amount of superglue might be the way to go alternatively buying an external sound card might be an option $20US

Read more

1. I have an NVidia GeForce 960. I wanna play games and record it so when something cool happens I can show my friends.
2. my friend told me that using the NVidia Experience application to record gameplay has less of a performance hit than using the Xbox DVR recording. makes sense, I guess.
3. in order for the application to record the game audio as well, I have to send the audio to the graphics card.
4. graphics card doesn't have a headphone jack, but the audio is sent from my graphics card to my monitor, which does have a headphone jack.
5. (the problem) my monitor seems to do something to the audio, because when I plug my headphones into my monitor it sounds terrible compared to when I plug it into one my computer's headphone jacks.
so I would like to be able to send the audio to both the graphics card and my audio device (headphones) simultaneously. is there any hope for me?
also..... is there a difference in performance when using the NVidia Experience app to record vs. using the Xbox DVR? because if there isn't, there's no point in worrying about this.

Hi there. So, when I plug my headphones into the headphone jack, the speakers don't mute and no sound comes through the headphones. I went into the control panel and tried to select a different speaker, and I found that one of the three speaker devices actually played sound through the headphones. Even setting it as a default wouldn't make the music play through the headphones though. So, I found websites like these: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-756888.html http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=687663&page=2 but I have no idea what is going on in these places because I'm useless when it comes to programming and what not. I'm a college student that is not too literate in the programming of sound cards. If somebody could break it down for me in really easy, simplistic steps (assuming that I have a pretty good knowledge of how to operate this vista platform) so I don't have to lose this lappy to tech repair, that would be fantastic. in recap: what I need is the sound to come through the headphones and not the speakers when headphones are plugged in. And it would also be nice if I could get sound to work and come through other speakers if I have an aux cable plugged into it. thank you.

Answer:Y510 Headphone Jack/Input issues

It can be either a software or a hardware problem. To determine if it is software you need to reinstall driver for audio, if doesn't help - fully restore system. If this doesn't help - you have a hardware malfunction (for example - some contact in jack-in is not properly soldered).

Hi, I have some issues with Maxxaudio Pro and the sound of the speaker. I think the drivers may have broken something or just the sound is little distorted and not clear.

1. there is not preset available in maxxaudio pro, only a default/flat one (also the EQ bars do not work if I changing them, no diferent in audio output). Please see the attachment. Is this normal? I found some MaxxStereo, MaxxBass bass...etc presets that I cannot found in my MAxxaudio Pro.
2. The sound settings in windows, the enhancements tab is missing and no effect can be applied. Please see the attachment. Is this normal?
3. in device manager I notice there is not driver available for Intel High Definition driver. I tried to update the driver in windows but shows me a message that windows cannot found any driver. Please see the attachment file as well.
I tried everything, uninstalled and reinstall new drivers from realtek and dell websites with no luck. I have windows 10 Pro with the lastest windows updates installed.

Could you please help me with this issues? Thanks in advance

Answer:Many audio issues with xps 13 9360

The Intel HD audio comes from the display driver for HDMI.  In the Sound devices you should see the Realtek device.
Make sure and have the latest drivers from Dell.  The Maxx audio preset should allow you to save a new version after you have made some change.  It may want you to save the preset before you can hear a difference but I think I have seen it behave both ways, during and after saving.
My system is showing 24 bit audio, so you might check yours to see if that is available.
Make sure there are no enhancements enabled on the Speaker icon settings since they may add to the ones from Maxx.
If you have more problems, I will be on my other system to check you attachments.

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC. Over the past few months my headphone jack has not been working properly. It started off with the headphones having to be held in a certain place to prevent sound coming out of the speakers at the same time as the headphones (I have tried every pair of headphones i own) . Over time, this has been getting worse and now, sound comes out of the speakers regardless of whether i have any heaphones plugged in. The headphone jack is really wobbly and i'm assuming i'll need to take my pc to a repair shop? Thanks in advance

Answer:Y50 Headphone Jack Not Working

hi Niphoros,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Just to verify, do you get a pop-up notification whenever you plugged-in a headphone / earphone?
- Link to picture

If yes then your issue is most likely similar to this article. As per these specs, the Y50 uses an audio combo jack (headphone and mic). Although this port supports various mobile headphones, you may need to get a PC Headset to 3.5mm Smartphone Adapter if you're using a traditional headset with a separate.audio and mic connector.

If you are inserting the headphones once film has started, chances are the film has already picked up the sound device as speaker and wants to use that. changing in the middle of something often results in no sound, for me at least. try plugging phones in before you turn the computer on, and leave them in. hopefully that should cure it. Hello,On my W520 (4276-37U), my headphone jack suddenly stopped working. The headphone is recognized because all music/sound stop playing from the speaker but everything I hear from the headphone jack is noise. I tested 2 good headphones, both are not working. I hear a noise constantly, music playing or not. Volume control doesn't change anything to the noise output either. Tried to reboot the computer. Tried to reinstall audio driver. Noting is working.I doubt that is an hardware issue.I was listening to music on iTunes, leaved my computer for a few minute, when I came back my iTunes was still playing music but my headphone was only outputting this noise. Any idea? It is recommended to fill out your system specs. I have no idea what your system is or what audio driver/manager you are using.

If you have a realtek HD audio card- Install the audio manager, and set it to allow setting to pop up when jacks are used. That way you can tell it if you inserting headphones, mic, etc, and it will mute the external speakers and use the headphones-otherwise it plays out the speakers (this is common if you have a realtek card, and use the default Microsoft hd sound driver/software codecs. You may also note the "volume knob" does not work)

If you have a realtek card install the realtek driver/audio manager here:http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false
