Characters are invisible when typing in login window

Question: Characters are invisible when typing in login window

I've tried searching this symptom using Google but it leads me to other non-related issues. Can I insert a photo image of the problem I'm going through? I'm asking permission.

forgot to add: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit

Preferred Solution: Characters are invisible when typing in login window

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Help! My laptop is going crazy! Whenever I click on a text box to type something characters automatically are entered, messing up my words and then they just keep typing themselves. Also the scroll, fn button keeps turning itself on without me touching it.

Obviously, I am not typing this post from that computer - or it would look like this

H-el--***p*******************************************!!!!!!******************************************

I have run Norton and updated Norton and it does not detect anything.

Is this a virus? How do I get rid of it??

Thanks in advance to any info anyone can give me.

Answer:Characters Are Typing Themseles Into Every Text Window I Use!

Hello,

Is it just one or two keys that are being repeated? if so, there is possibly something sticking them down.
Do you have a replacement keyboard to test?

Hi! I use Firefox for everything but one thing I need IE for work. All of a sudden started getting these IE pop ups when I had IE closed all of the time, I get "You have won an Ipod, WalMart card, etc." voice ads with no window at all, I also get an IE that shows up if I do Alt+tab but doesn't show if I try to bring it up. I have XP Professional Service Pack 3. I have done Spybot, Housecall, Panda, I don't even know, I have done so many antivirus/scan/spyware things over the last four days and nothing is doing it. I think I am wasting my time and am bowing to you all, begging for help.

BTW I don't NORMALLY run w/o anything, I normally have AVG but yesterday I uninstalled it to run Kaspersky because it (AVG) was giving me trouble and now it will not completely uninstall to allow me to run Kaspersky. I am on my way to making a mess and stopped to beg for help before I kill the machine.

Edited to add - I also HAD the Antivirus 2009 but managed to get rid of that, or at least most outward appearances of it. I am left with these lingering pop up things though. I think I picked it all up in a spam email that looked very real from my brother-in-law.

EDITED -I have run a couple of more things - Ad-Aware, Stinger, Housecall, so this is an updated HJT log

I just got to chapter four in the witcher enhanced edition, and now the characters Julian and Adam are invisible! Their character models are nowhere to be found! There are times that I can still interact with them, if they initiate the interaction:

SPOILERS

Such as when Adam talks to you when you exit Alina's house, but other than that, nothing! I can't select them to talk to them, and they're some main characters in chapter four. I'm not sure if I can beat this chapter now.

When I push the "Alt" key, all the character and item names show up on screen, above their respective items and characters. The same happens for them, but it's just a static name floating in the air, and their collision is still active because I can't move through it.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Answer:The Witcher Chapter 4 invisible characters

ALSO! The hermit is gone too, but completely. No name, no collision, nothing.

its the weirdest thing... i installed avast!, and after that, hotmail.com refused to load but Outlook Express accessed my mail fine.
One minute Yahoo Messenger is working fine, and when I come back from dinner, I can't see a blamed thing in the message window (can see what I'm typing, but it goes away when i send it)

answers to either questions would be great

Answer:typing in invisible ink?

It could be that the color of the font got changed! I know teenagers and such will type in let's say yellow text so that parents can't read over their shoulder and then they just highlight it to read the message, it will look invisable til highlighted.

I don't yahoo so I can't help tell you where to check the settings at.
If this all started after installing avast try uninstalling to see if that fixes the issue.

Using a Lenovo Yoga 910.  All I want to do is to be able to quickly and easily insert the registered trademark symbol   without copying and pasting.  I use this symbol often and am frustrated that I can't figure out how to insert it quickly.

Answer:Typing special characters - ®

Nomally you can use CTRL+ALT+R   is the key combination to insert the  symbol in some applications like MS Office etc.and ALT + 0174 will also insert the symbol in most places that the CTRL+ALT+R key combinantion does not work, such as in this forum.   Cheers,

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

Answer:Keyboard typing two characters

After a good coffee spill, mopped rinsed and wiped away from a veteran Cherry keyboard, the same double key standards applied. Fortunately this keyboard can be dismantled to the point where separate laminations could be thoroughly dried. But then a veteran like you would notice the wet splash ...... wouldn't you???

Hello Everyone!
I have a problem with my brand new L20 missing out a lot of characters when I am typing. After searching around the forums, it seems that a few people are also having this problem. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in fixing this problem yet.

As far as I know, the problem only seems to be in WinXP, (I dual-boot with Linux Slackware 10.2 and don't notice the problem there) and I *think* it might have something to do with the internet. I say this because it is only really noticable for me when I am online, writing emails etc... (Writing to this forum takes a lot of error correcting) :)

Has anyone else been able to isolate when this problem is at its worse?

Also, is it possible to group together all the people who are having this same problem into one thread? I think there are about 3 separate threads where people have mentioned this problem, it would be nice to get everyone together to see if we can fix this.

I brought this notebook for programming, and as you can imagine I dare not try try any coding while this is happening, as it would cause toooooo many problems :)
So please, any help, hints, tips, advice or solutions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Answer:Typing several characters with one keystroke

Most browsers have the ability to remember or in some cases predict the username and password of a site you are trying to log in to.

If you tell me which browser you are using will point you to the relevant tutorial on how to set it up.

Also having your password mapped to a key on your keyboard is not a good idea in terms of security.

If you are still interested in mapping multiple letters or words to a single key it may be worth looking at Keyboard Layout Manager - Keyboard Editor Window (I'm not 100% sure it will let you assign multiple characters to one key but I think it can)

Answer:keyboard typing wrong characters

It is necessary for you to replace the keyboard. It is not sending the correct signals to the motherboard. Yes, even a notebook computer has a replacable keyboard. It's a job best assigned to a qualified computer technician, to find and order a compatible keyboard, and to disassemble the laptop far enough to be able to swap the keyboard.

Hello a while back my friend spilt a bit of soda on my laptops keyboard, I dried, and flipped my PC over flat on a towel. There was no damage for about a month, but now some key do multiple actions. Example: Pressing (Backspace) now moves the curser to the right one space, turn my volume down once, and then Backspace. Is there a way to fix this myself or would I have to take my PC into a repair store? Or have to replace my keyboard entirely?

Hi, hoping someone here can help me...

Toshiba Satellite A60-106 running Windows XP is missing characters when I type. If I type very very slowly then every key works fine. At normal typing speed numerous letters are dropped. This happens in every application and does not seem load-dependent. The key repeat rate is also slower than it should be (I know how to set this; the problem is not with the setting but with the fact that the setting is not being honoured or recognised properly).

Virus/spyware scan reports clean. The problem began suddenly for no apparent reason and does not seem to be associated with any hardware or software changes. Tried starting in safe mode, tried disabling all non-essential services/startup progams via msconfg but to no avail; problem still there.

Laptop has historically suffered badly from overheating, but this problem is not obviously related as it's the same whether the machine is hot or cold.

Any ideas?

Answer:Re: Satellite A60-106 - Dropping characters when typing

Have you installed drivers for an external Keyboard or Mouse? (for example Logitech or Microsoft)

If you boot into MSDOS, does it still drop characters? You can download a DOS bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com

What BIOS Version is installed? Do you have the latest version?

I have found that my Yoga 900 will regularly insert two characters when I have only hit a key once. I have a brand new Satellite C50-A-1CK which is perfect for my needs EXCEPT I continually get double characters appearing on screen when typing which is:
A. VERY frustrating
B. Wasting a lot of time as I have to keep correcting words to remove the duplicate characters.

Please does anyone know of a fix for this? It can affect any key on the keyboard and it doesn't matter if I type slow or quick, press the keys firmly or as light as possible.

Have checked for firmware updates but none available.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

I hope that someone can help you and me on this!

I have used other machines for years, I am a reasonably competent typist but have suffered the same problem on my Satellite C850 and it drives me mad.

Also the ease with which using the touchpad to move the cursor about results in the machine selecting the settings sidebar for Windows 8 by mistake.

I have tried changing the keyboard sensitivity within windows but this does not seem to help - just slows the keyboard right down.

Really frustrating

Hi nfarrier, Welcome to Sevenforums.

Yes, it can be virus. Did you made any changes on the PC recently?

As mentioned by Yard Dog, run Malwarebyts to scan for malwares. Run antivrus, and do SFC/SCANNOW to check for any errors.

Hi. I use gedit as editor in my Linux systems (SUSE and Fedora); there I find that I can't type in accented characters like I used to do in Windows.

In the text editor in Windows, even using an English keyboard configuration, I could type in accented characters by entering a combination of Alt+<ASCIIcode>, for example Alt+130 would type in the accented 'e' character; this sequence doesn't work in Linux.

Any suggestions on how to solve the problem ?

Thnx

Suddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.

For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!

So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.

I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.

I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.

Can anybody help?
Thanks
Henry

Answer:Laptop keys also typing adjacent characters

Do you have another keyboard you can plug in and try? That will tell you if it's the keyboard (problem will not show with replacement) or the keyboard-to-PC interface (problem will persist with replacement). If you don't have an extra yourself, maybe you can borrow one from a friend /family/colleague/neighbor...?

Answer:windows live mail typing characters

I'm not that familiar with Windows Mail but suspect that it is seeing your character combination as a request for a smiley. You may be able to point to the symbol, right click and see if there is a 'remove smiley' option. Failing that, try using square or curly brackets ([ or {) as a work around.

When I create a basic table in Ms Powerpoint 2003 with 2 colums/2 rows, some letters are sometimes spaced properly and sometimes not:

For ie, the word "Settlement" in the attached powerpoint document -> The 1st time Settlement is typed, there is no issue
at all. But the 2nd time it is typed, the letter <t> and the letter <l> are squizzed together. Then the 3rd time it is typed, it is fine. Same issue occurs with other words (for ie the word <test> may be fine the 1st time it is typed, then you type it a 2nd time, you get that issue of the letters <s> and <t> squizzed together.

See the attachments (they are the screenshots of the issue)

Troubleshoot:

(x)Changed her MS Windows profile = same issue

(x)Re-installed MS Office 2003 = same issue

(x)Tried in MS WOrd or Excel = it is fine in Word + Excel. So problem is with power point

There are a mix of ideas here:http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-...Do not update the BIOS though unless you are certain that is the issue (rare) - get it wrong and you need a new motherboard.EDIT:If nothing there helps it might be a keyboard driver issue. If so, go to "Device Manager" and expand out the Keyboards entry. Right click your keyboard and then Uninstall. Machine approaching three years old and not continually used. A couple of weeks ago, it started missing characters when typing or it will type two characters and then highlight them so when you type again the first two characters are gone. Does this on both the on screen and laptop keyboard. Tried an external keyboard and it too acted the same way.
Here's what I've done - run diagnostics (no issues), downloaded and installed most recent BIOS, chipset, video and all other drivers. Have also in Device Manager deleted keyboards and rebooted with no change. All Windows 10 updates are installed.
Most of the time I have it plugged in and charge set to only charge when battery is approaching low.
Have not removed the battery and keeping it as a last option.
Any ideas?

Hi,
As stated above in the questionnaire, my system was sluggish and I ran my PCMatic scan which would stop running about 40% through the scan. I ran Malwarebytes (free) with no issues found. Removed PCMatic and installed AVG (free) which found some issues and cleaned them up but performace wasn't improved much. My keyboard then began to act quirky by characters not appearing or the cursor jumping around or nothing will happen but the "system busy wheel" pops up for a few seconds before characters appear on the screen.

I came back to you guys because TwinHeadedEagle was so effective at helping me with my desktop 18 mos ago that I was hoping for help.

Thanks, regards and please advise if I can once again get some assistance,
Sandy Lanz

Answer:Strange behavior like typing & no characters appear, cursor jumps randomly

Hello,
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

For some reason, there always seem to be a second delay on the keys on the keyboard, including the numeric keypad. Many times, either a character was skipped or the character showed up twice.
Vey frustrasting as I always have to go back to add or delete a character.

When I run a word program in safe mode, it works fine. Someone told me it may be a software issue as the problem does not occur in safe mode.
I am very careful with the laptop as I am sure there was no spill.

Any comment is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi

Try a BIOS update.
I read here in the forum that this solved the keyboard issue similar to yours.

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. I tried one Registry fix for WLM but it didn't work as a value changed to 0 reset itself everytime to 1.
Any ideas where to look to fix this? It's actually impossible to use the effected laptop as data entry of any kind is now effectively defeated.

Answer:Typing any character now produces floating menu of chinese characters

Solved......I went to Control Panel > Languages and saw Chinese had appeared after my default English. No idea why, it just had. So I highlighted and pressed the option to Remove.

Have you performed a full scan for malware or virus's with a good Antivirus and Malwarebytes? An annoyance program ( malware or gag program ) could be crafted to set window priority so that taking away the priority from where you are at with a window that is say far off in the corner off the screen from view etc.My thoughts are that something like this is stealing the focus on you. There are a bunch of programs out there that a friend could even add to your system to drive you crazy etc such as drunken mouse etc where you try to select stuff and it is not very cooperative etc. So if anyone else uses this system check with them to see if they are playing a gag on you etc.If the Window you are in though fades and it says instead that the program is no longer responding then its a totally different issue than a gag program etc. Do you get any program is no longer responding issues?

When I turn on my computer, I get to the login screen, click in the field and type in my password. When the login completes, my cursor disappears. I can still see it highlighting things I mouse-over, I can click on things and right click and do everything normally except for the fact that I cannot actually see the cursor. If I Ctrl Alt Del, the mouse is again visible, but as soon as I got back to to desktop or start screen, the cursor goes invisible again. I have tried messing with the mouse trails and enlarging the cursor, selecting a different cursor, re installing drivers and system restore however, system restore was not successful. When I try to do a system restore, it says that windows is missing files but that I may insert my installation disk to recover these files. Upon doing so, it says my disk in invalid. The disk is in perfect condition and is the exact disk I used to install windows in the first place. At this point the mouse is still invisible. I then went to My Computer and ran the disk from there. Out of nowhere, the cursor appears and everything seems to be normal. After turning the computer off and back on however, the cursor again disappears until I run my windows installation disk. I've tried this 3 times now and every time inserting the disk causes the cursor to reappear. My theory (which may be wildly incorrect) is that when running the installation disk, it loads the proper files into the RAM which allows my cursor to be visible. As soon as the computer... I have a HP Pavilion Sleetbook 14 PC - Core i5 3rd Generation computer. I'm using Windows 8.1 - 64 bit. I was just updating Nvidia from windows updates but it was taking so long so I stop downloading the updates. Then I restarted my laptop and now it is taking so long to appera login screen. First, the cursor spins for 2 to 3 minutes and then login screen appears with weird characters instead of text.
I tried to install a fresh copy of Windows 8 as well as Windows 7 but it is giving me checking media fail error. (My laptop has no built-in DVD Rom. I'm using a USB portable DVD Rom and it is working).
When I enables the Secure Boot option from BIOS, the screen appers with a message "Boot device not found. Please install an OS on your hard drive. Hard Disk - (3F0). Then I performed Hard Drive test and it was okaye with HDD. I also performed memory test and it was alright with Memory.
But my problems are still existing.
- Taking so long to start up and weird charcter on login screen.
- Checking media fail while installing OS.
Kindly help me because I'm taking so much stress.

Can extended ASCII characters be used for the supervisor password?  I would like to use them to  create a strong password.  A character like the "A" whith an "umlaut" would be nice.  How do you enter the extended ASCII characters in to the password if they are not on the normal R61 keyboard? Thanks! Dan in Colorado

Answer:Extended ASCII Characters in Login Password

I think, all these passwords in the BIOSof Lenovo  are NOT case sensitive. Try it. Therefore just make your passwords longer. Jochen from Germany

If you have a USB keyboard available, try using it for the time being.

I'm having trouble with the display of some applications. I have added two attachments. First was supposed to be weather gadget but it's invisible, although all the buttons are still present (see attachment 1). The other problem are any third-party programs for example Adobe Reader installer would be just black screen, however, still working. Because I knew the buttons 'install' and 'done' are in the right down corner I was able to install it normally, however, no window content was seen. The second attachment should be AVG notification about update, but as you can see, it's black as well.

It started appearing today, after installing several programs using UVK (Ultra Virus Killer) and Tweaking.com Windows Repair.

I have no malware, scanned several times with MBAM, Hitman Pro, AVG, SAS, TDSSKiller and more.

How should I address the issue?

Thanks anyone for the answers.

Answer:Invisible window content

I would use System Restore and choose a restore point before you installed the programs and see if the problem goes away. Then I would install the programs one by one and see when the problem comes back.

It could also be the tweaking that you did with Tweaking.com, you may not be able to undo that if no restore point was made before you used it.

HI,

While searching this forum i came across this closed thread:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/718802-invisible-window-desktop.html

Everything stated is exactly the same as what i have! the image is quite accurate

To answer the reply- questions.

- Yes i tried restarting in safe mode and afaik the window was gone. My resolution in safe mode is **** and couldn't change that.. so afaik the window was gone. But i have no idea what process it is and i feel a little bit withheld turning them off one by one.

- No i cannot rightclick inside the "window". it just shows the "adjust size" icon.

- What i did find out but not sure if it is really that related is that the window is gone when i start Call of Duty 4 game and close it again. So it might be some error window but then again i can't solve it cuz i can't see what it's saying. On the other hand, nothing from Call of Duty 4 starts up when i start my computer..atleast i think. So why would it be an error from the game?
Please advice cuz it has been annoying me for far to long now

Answer:Invisible window on desktop !

I assume that there is no "ghost" application in the task bar. And no unexplained application shows in Task Manager, right?

If you decide to try isolating the problem by turning off startup items you do not have to do one at a time. Better to do a "binary" search. Turn off 1/2 of them. If the window still appears you can turn those back on and turn off 1/2 of the remaining. When the window disappears (let's hope so!) then turn back on 1/2 of the set you just turned off.

Short of that you could examine the processes in Task Manager. Most of them you can figure out (do a web search on the name for ones you don't know). If left with any mysterious or suspicious ones stop it/them and see what happens.

Hello, I have ran out of ideas and I need help, I hope this is the right place to post this.

Once I turn my computer on, there is a completely invisible IE window that sometimes resides on the top left corner of my monitor. I can tell that it is an IE window because I can right click it and see the page properties.

This window has no name and has a generic window icon in the Alt-Tab list. It "stays-on-top" of all windows. It takes up a small spot on the top left of my screen or sometimes it wouldn't be anywhere on my screen. It's 100% invisible/transparent

It tried to access 3 websites because I can right click it and click "back" or "forward" I have copied down the urls by looking at the page's properties.res://ieframe.dll/dnserrordiagoff_webOC.htm#http://cpk.easy78.cn/count/count.asp...E&ver=20080310

(njtalienware is my computer name)

This window doesn't seem to be in any of the process lists, but I've tried researching this myself and read that it was in the svchost.exe. It got terminated when I "End task" the right scvhost.exe, the window would then vanish after it has ended and no longer seen in the Alt-tab list.

I am currently running Windows Vista Business, and for a while now, there has been an "invisible window" on my desktop. I cannot click on any icon that happens to be under it. The cursor will change to the "adjust size" icon when on the edge of the window (I have highlighted the area as when screenshotting, the cursor is not present).

As shown, it is positioned at the the left hand corner of the screen; it occassionally moves, but stays in that area. When I have a window open that has been restored down and is in that area, the "invisible window" will cover it, but when an open window is maximised, it is behind it.

This is becoming a real annoyance. Any ideas?

Answer:Invisible window on desktop

I'm guessing you've restarted and it's still there? Also, boot into safe mode and see if it's there then... If it's not, you just need to disable your startup programs and re-enable them one by one until you find the offender.

My PC has been experiencing IE windows popping up with ads while I'm in firefox (and when no browser is open). Also get "You've won a gift card" type voice messages with no windows open at all. I ran spybot, which found fraud.sysguard and was subsequently removed, but still having the problem. Also ran Malwarebytes and AVG, but no help there. I'm not overly savvy in the spyware / adware removal department and have generally relied on automated (i.e. spyS&D) solutions in the past. Any suggestions?

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. (FYI: The Onscreen Keyboard just works fine) A few example stuff which I get when I press the keys: CAPS Lock: WX (When I press Caps lock key it types WX along with it so the pattern goes like this: WXwxWXwxWXwx and so on if you keep pressing caps lock)q: When I press q its types a tab with qwm: its types yum instead of mw: works like caps lock key. Turns on Caps and types WX too.x: same as wBackspace: Backspace deletes one character and along with that presses the enter key too The keys in the middle row i.e.. asdfghjkl are all working fine. hi bijoy3d,

Welcome to the Forums.

What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

My Acronis backup is failing today, so I tried to open Acronis and all I get is an outline of the window.

If I click in the upper right hand corner of the outline where the Close Window button should be, the window closes so I know the application opened, but it's a ghost.

I'm trying to do a repair of it now, but since searches of the internet reveal that others have had the same problem with other applications, I think it might be a Windows problem. I've also seen where reinstalling the application does not fix the problem. It sounds like a registry setting.

Does anyone have a solution?

UPDATE: After the repair, Windows says it's not installed yet Programs and Features says it is.

UPDATE2: I tried to uninstall but Windows wouldn't uninstall it so I forced the uninstall with REVO uninstaller. Then I went through the registry deleting Acronis entries. After I was done, it BSODed and Windows would no longer start. After booting to the Last Known Good Configuration, I was able to uninstall and reinstall the software. For now, the issue is resolved. I was hoping someone would have pitched in with an easier fix.

I am using Windows 10 1703. For whatever reason, the mouse cursor will disappear inside a window/program (I haven't found a pattern for which windows). The cursor is visible when I take it out of the window, and invisible again when I put it back in. Sometimes the problem is solved by minimizing then maximizing the window. Why could this be happening? Could it be a driver issue? Thanks.

I booted up my computer today and i noticed a floating bubble saying internet explorer has recovered a tab. I looked in my processes and i saw 4 iexplore.exe running. After ending them and doing scans with mcafee and microsofts malware removal tool from their main website i found nothing. I looked in start up folder/msconfig for anything that could be causing it and i did not find anything. I saw on this website how a small .dll file could cause similar problems so i came here for help.

This one is hard to describe, but I'll bet someone else has seen it. When I turned on my PC yesterday, Windows seems to start ok. The XP logo came up, but then a command window (square box with a blue top border) popped up with an unintelligible character in the title border, and another unintelligible character inside the box. The Close Window X in the upper right hand cornber would not close it and I could not use CRTL-ALT-DEL to stop it. The only option available is to select an OK button in the box which then seems to allow Windows to load properly.

I noticed immediately that it changed all my desktop icons to .LNK files and they all looked different. I immediately ran a Norton Virus scan but it found nothing. After researching on the web for LNK file problems/viruses I looked in my file associations listing and saw that the EXE file association had been deleted, and that the LNK entry did not have Shortcut associated. I made these changes and the icons now look normal, but when I try to access them to run almost any application I get an Access Denied error.

I called Norton's help line (at $100 cost) and they told me to log out and log back in as Administrator. The system would not allow me to do that and, after an hour of other failures, Norton told me to call the PC mfr (emachines/Gateway) to find out how to obtain the Administrator password. With the PC mfr's help I downloaded a file from www.loginrecovery.com and was able to capture the l... Read more

For a number of months, Windows 7 [Professional x64 w/SP1] has been hanging after I login, but only after I start typing somewhere.

I can open up applications, such as Chrome and Publisher, and they'll continue to work fine as long as I'm clicking and not typing somewhere. But, if I start typing in the address bar of Chrome, or in the Windows Run box (winkey+R), it'll hang, usually for 10-15 seconds.

If I let my system just sit there after logging on (30 seconds or so), and then start typing in a program, it won't hang.

The same thing happens on my gaming PC. They both have a similar set of applications installed.

I had Task Manager open while the hang was happening, but nothing out of the ordinary was happening.

Do any of you know how to fix this, or of a way I can get deeper inside of everything to narrow down what's causing this issue?

Heya, I've been having this problem for nearly a month now and lately it's been really driving me crazy so I figured I might as well take the time to solve it. So, I've been having invisible windows explorer windows pop up, which I can only see through the task manager. They mainly slow down my computer but they also randomly start playing random audio recordings, like some chinese ad or a song.

Hi, I have recently encounter this problem, its something new to me. I use Firefox as my main browser. I'll be browsing the web, next when I try to click on a link the mouse pointer stays an arrow instead of turning into the finger hand. As I click on the link it loads up a new tab or page and directs me into a survey or whatever it want. I close that tab and go back to the original page and only then the page functions as normal. It's pretty random.Of course this happens not just links but the whole page. Just by clicking on anywhere even on white space this thing pops up. It's like the whole screen has an invisible button that directs you to a stupid survey or whatever spams are these days. I don't believe this happens with my other browsers as I rarely use them. What is this and how can I remove this?

Just after the Windows splash screen I get a window with unreadable characters in it. It has and X in the upper right hand corner wich is not funtional but the OK button causes it to close and Windows continues to boot. If I ignore it for a while it will close on its own and Windows will boot up.
The characters in the title bar and in the window look a little like the wingdings font and some times there is a part of a file name in the title bar as well as the strange characters. In the main window it seems to always be just two strange random charaters. I have scanned the system with many malware scanners: SuperAntiSpyware, Avast, Malwarebytes, Panda

Welcome to TSF!

Sounds like the Legal Notice registry keys have gotten corrupted.

Do step 1 for all versions of XP
Do Step 2 for XP Home (XP Home doesn't include the Local Security Policy tool, this is the manual method for step 3)
For XP Pro or Media Center you can do either Step 2 or Step 3, you do not need to do both.

Reboot, and see if that removes that box.
Click Start | Run, type regedit, press Enter.
Navigate to here:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
In the right pane find these 2 items:
LegalNoticeCaption
LegalNoticeText
Make sure they are blank -- double click on them and make sure there isn't even a space in the box.
Click Start | Run, type regedit, press Enter.
Navigate to here:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system
In the right pane find these 2 items:
LegalNoticeCaption
LegalNoticeText
Make sure they are blank -- double click on them and make sure there isn't even a space in the box.
Control Panel | [Performance and Maintenance] | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy
Navigate to Security Settings | Local Policies | Security Options
Check that both these items are blank:
Interactive logon: Message text for users attempting to log on
Interactive logon: Message title for users attempting to log on
Make sure they are blank -- double click on them and make sure there isn't even a space in the box.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed which worked fine up to a few days ago.
It started prompting for the BIOS password to log on wish I had to get from Dell.
When I get to the Windows 7 screen and try to enter the password,I can't type anything in the box and it will not allow me to type at all.
I've tried using an external (usb) keyboard and get the same results-It won't allow me to type.
I have slso tried to go to " Advanced Startup Options "(holding the f8 key down while starting) and it would not boot into the " Advanced Startup Options ' screen.
Finally after several tries, I got it to go to the " Advanced Startup Options ' screen but I cannot get it to arrow down to the " Last Known Good Configuration " option.
The screen is frozen. I have rebooted several times with the same result. I figured if I did this it would restore the system to a point where the keyboard worked.
Is this a system issue,a driver issue or is the keyboard bad?
As I mentioned earlier, the usb keyboard when plugged in also did not type.
Thanks

I've seen other threads about these kind of problems but didn't want to do anything in those incase it messed up the PC or something.

Not sure how exactly I ended up with this but.. I use firefox anyways.

Also I couldn't post a combofix log, seems when I try and run it, after completing the 50 stage scan it gets to a point where it says "Deleting files" and the computer then goes to a BSOD (Too quick to even read what it says) Before restarting itself and leaving no log or anything.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your infection is in your Master Boot Record (MBR). We need to see the below log before creating a fix.

Download bootkit_remover.rar
Click the underlined DOWNLOAD text to download the file and save it to your Desktop.
You then need to extract the remover.exe file from the RAR using a program capable of extracing RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can use 7-Zip
After extracing remover.exe to your Desktop, double click the remover.exe file to run the program.
Attach or post inline here, the output from remover.exe
NOTE: The Command Prompt window text can be copied to the clip board by right clicking on the top bar of the window and using the Edit commands to Mark, Copy, and Paste.

Also I need to ask some questions:
Do you have any drives that has a non-windows installation on them
Are all drives NTFS formatted
Do you have any non-standard or special MBRs which can occur from companies like Dell or HP who frequently install additional partitions used for recovery partitions in lieu of giving CD/DVDs.
Is any program like Grub ( see:http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ ) being used
Is drive-encryption being used?
Are any drives external USB pen drives or external hard drives being used?
VERY IMPORTANT: Do you have all important data backed up? You really should do this before continuing since we will need to rewrite your MBR to fix this and while most times this can be done without any problem, these infections c... Read more

So I've been having this for a while, and not just on this laptop, but others.

Basically, on the desktop/screen. There is a box that reaches about a third way into the screen from the right and around half way up. It's invisible and I cannot click on it or find it anywhere or the systerm/task manager. It's getting on my nerves because it's acting like a small dead space and anything that is in that area becomes nonfunctioning. I.E when browser is opened anything that is in that dead-space becomes unusable. I cannot drag any files over to that space on the desktop as it comes up with a ''no-entry'' sign. It doesn't seem to affect me when I'm playing games or nothing. Just when I'm doing general internet browsing.

I've tried everything from a clean boot to updating my drivers. I've scanned the PC and it's clean. What else shall I try?

I have been getting this same error for several weeks and I really do not know what could be causing it. All I know is that every time I use the browse command or open file command in any program, the resulting window looks like this: http://embed.gyazo.com/4870a31016460...ac434b8e4c.png

Try a clean startup - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
Then if no go, get CCleaner - Tools - Startup - Context Menu - save to text file (to know which are enabled or not) - then disable them one by one. See if this helps.

Hello,

I am having a virus causing everything I click to redirect to ads.
It appears that the adware was a small app located in C:/Program Files (x86)/common Files/Installshield/ISUSPM.exe
It seems to work by hijacking my proxy settings, always reverting it to enabled when I try to disable it, adress being : http=127.0.0.1:8080;https=127.0.0.1:8080 and setting the list of exceptions to <-loopback>
So, I tried to simply kill the ISUSPM process then deleting it, but I still couldn't change the proxy settings.
I tried to find what service or auto started app was causing the proxy hijacking but i can't find anything, then I had to override firefox proxy settings to be able to browse since I deleted the ISUSPM thing.
I then rebooted to safe mode and deleted the registry keys in microsoft/windows/currentversion.internet settings that enabled the proxy and overrided the settings, but when I rebooted to normal, the proxy came back, even though the ISUSPM thing didn't come back and I wasn't able to browse exect with my overridden proxy-free firefox.
I used :
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, TDSSKiller, ADWCleaner, SuperAntispyware and they all say my computer's fine but it obviously isn't..
Please help me... I think it came when I tried to install manycam but not sure. I uninstalled it since.

Hi,
Whenever I click on "Start" and then go to type anything in the "Run Window" (eg. msconfig, regedit etc.) I get as far as typing 3 letters and then it locks up, and eventually I get a message saying Windows Explorer has stopped working.
I have tried to do a System Restore, but it fails to load the old registry settings.
I have run Spyware and Virus programs, and updated Drivers, and do not know what else to try.
I would be grateful for any help, please?
Many thanks.
