How do I know the host computer turn on or turn off?

Question: How do I know the host computer turn on or turn off?

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

Preferred Solution: How do I know the host computer turn on or turn off?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

Is making corrections under an admin signon good enough or do you have to go under each profile?

I made the UNFORTUNATE mistake of selecting to "sync" my skydrive. Decided I don't need to sync my files across devices or even for sharing on my home PC. Then I noticed this little cloud appears in my task bar. Upon further investigation I found skydrive is open [or active] somehow. I didn't understand this cause I wasn't using it & it's also CONTINUALLY updating, then one time it was downloading. I was thoroughly confused, downloading what. I guess it's updating my image files that are hosted on the cloud server. Well, I didn't want this; finding it rather vexing I went exploring for solutions on how to disable it. Ending the process in task manager was one method...but sometimes it would intermittently re-activate, like a veritable ghost in the machine. I'd "end task", again. It kept coming back. Well, I was getting next to furious so I went looking for other solutions. I found information which told me to go into the skydrive task manager & disable the sync. It seemed easy enough, I did this; it's a slide bar. I click 'slid' it over to off. Figured, problem solved. NO! This darn skydrive sync engine host keeps coming on & turning up in the task manager & on my task bar...there is another solution on disabling it in the task scheduler functions...something to do with system idle maintenance which is bundled within the Windows automatic maintenance functions. Again, such a vexing & PERPLEXING matter. I opened up the windows maintaine... Read more

If you have got an XP install disc to do a recovery if it goes bad, i'd just hit the reset button, and boot into safemode straight away [press F8 as it is booting] then schedule a chkdsk and restart.

to schedule chkdsk...

Go to "my computer" and right click on the drive windows is on.

Select "properties" then go to the "tools" tab and click "check now" on the error checking section.

Hi everyone,

While turning on my computer the it turns on, fans are starting to move, but screen won't turn on, and the beep of the bios is not heard.

pressing the sleep/reset button next to the turn-on button computer goes off, pressing it again turns on the computer without any problem. (now I'm working with the same computer) i thought maybe it's the power supply that gives me problem but changed between computers, this still gives me trouble and other computer works good (besides its many problems ). any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?
Thanks

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,

there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;

remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.

The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound.  After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.

If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard  is the culprit.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

Hey guys, little help here please.
Sometimes when I try to turn on IS it tries to turn On but everything greys out and nothing happens. Last time I tried it was about 4 hrs ago and since then its been hung up there. I can't open IS from settings now, Loading... shows up and it crashes after ~20sec. I can't turn off wifi because it becomes 'frozen' and when I press Back/Start button nothing happens but if I long press back button it show my active window is Start screen even though I am still in Wifi settings. After I release button wifi closes and end up in start screen.
I know if I soft reset everything comes back to normal. 99% I can even turn on IS. But why does this happen and how do you solve this problem (I know in the past some ppl used to have it)

Answer:Internet sharing doesn't turn on + cant turn off wifi

After a bit of searching this was the only answer I could find.
Remove/uninstall your nokia acount, install access point....you will get your internet sharing.
Not sure if that will help you or not but it's worth a shot.

Everything seemed to be normal so I started slowly installing the programs I had before. Now a few days after, I find that my wireless device is Off and Flight Mode is On. Can anybody tell me how to fix this please ? I really don't know how it happened. Can it be that my laptop is still infected ?

Thanks,

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. So if anyone could help me in the right direction it would be great. I just hope it wont have to buy a whole new motherboard x.xAlso idk if thats helpful information, but the first year playing games was fine, but the 2nd year and the laptop kind of overheated so I tried to cut down a bit and the fans were making more noises than ever. Especially when opening a new game or google chrome.

Answer: Laptop turn on for 4 seconds (No Display, Fan noise) and then turn off

A chemical smell to me tells me it's likely a failing/burnt out capacitor...It would be best to have it checked out at a shop...

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

Answer:Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

It should be listed in Programs & Features under Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Essentials. If you still can't find it listed then go to get.live.com and re-download the installer, reinstall it, then uninstall it.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Answer:Vista Ultimate x64: turn off display, will not turn back on

sounds like your display drivers are crashing.

Do not rely on windows update drivers - go to graphics chipset manufacturer website and get latest drivers

That's usually the first thing to try. Let it get some juice in it and then try turning it on. If that doesn't work, you may need to download the WDRT program on your computer and plug your phone in there to reset it.

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?
EDIT OOPS! Welcome to the forum!

I just picked up the HP Stream 8 at the MS Store this weekend during their VIP event (25$ off 75$ or more). I actually haven't opened it yet, because I'm still deciding if I should keep it.
One thing the HP Stream 8 seems to have is GPS. I say "seems" because no one at the MS store even knew that it had GPS--- I had to tell them about it and pull up the HP website to show them the specs.
I've loved having HERE Maps and HERE Drive on my Lumia 521 because of the downloadable offline maps. I try not to pay for data since I'm near wi-fi 95% of the time, so it is nice that the GPS works without requiring data.
Although there is a HERE Maps app for Windows 8.1, I haven't been able to find an app that is like HERE Drive, with turn-by-turn navigation.
Is anyone aware of such an app?
Thanks!

Answer:Any Windows 8.1 apps with turn-by-turn navigation?

Does anyone know if the new Maps app being built for the phone and PC features voice turn-by-turn navigation? I know the current Maps app does not. You need to use Here Drive or another third party app for voice navigation.

Answer:Will the new Maps app have voice turn-by-turn directions?

I forget where I read it earlier. I think it was either ArsTechnica, The Verge or WinBeta. Cortana is supposed to give turn by turn directions and can be asked to repeat them. The maps app is also supposed to be designed by Microsoft, but also uses HereDrive. The actual default camera app for all phones and probably pc's, laptops and tablets is actually Lumia Camera.

Yes, i have the same issue. Though it suffices if you deactivate and activate your WLAN adapter @ networkcenter, you don't need to reboot. This happened to me a couple of times as well.

I disabled Multi-Core in BIOS so i don't have regular lags.I always keep energy saving settings to "Maximum Performance" so i don't have regular contrast issues.I deinstalled ThinkAdvantage Access Connections so i don't have random WLAN Adapter "power offs".

I saw that there were others with this issue. I already tried things like resetting the ram, taking out my battery. Even with my laptop plugged in, not lights are showing up and the power button isnt starting anything. I tried to listen and hear if anything was happening, but no luck. I just to get help if there is anything I can do to trouble shoot or just figure out what the issue is so I can get it fixed . I was running Windows 10 on there.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R won't turn on ! No lights will turn on .

Hi PARTH511722,
What is the exact system model?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible? Could you try powering on with another battery?
Remove the memory and disconnect the HDD and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
If the adapter led is stable when connected to the system and there are no signs of power, then the motherboard is suspected faulty.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

New W510.  (4318 CTO, 16GB, WIndows 7)  Used new 640GB drive to install Windows 7 Pro x64 from scratch.  Installed lasted versions of drivers from Lenovo W510 support site.  Almost everything works, except the WiMAX. WiMAX shows up and seems to be properly controlled in the preload.  It does not show up in my rebuild, so the HW is there. Among other things, I installed Power Management Driver, Power Manager, HotKey Features and the Intel WiFi WiMAX 6250 v13.00.0000 (both WiFi and WiMAX parts) but just the WiFi part shows up in the OnScreen Display when using FnF5.  The WiMAX does not.  The drivers show up in the Control Panel programs list and there were no problems indicated during installation.  Am I missing something or is there a trick to the installation order?

Answer:W510 WiMAX cannot turn on or turn off with FnF5

A bit more information:  Under Network Connections the WiMAX adapter is listed as unplugged. Local Area Connection 2   Network cable unplugged    Intel(r) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6250 Seems odd to me that it is not listed as a wireless device. Any suggestions on how get the WiMAX working?

Good day!

My cousin asked me to troubleshoot the problem of his desktop. He was telling me that it is not turning on. I was caught by surprise when i turned on the PC when suddenly I heard some kind of explosion. It sounds like a blown capacitor or something to that effect. I immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. I checked all the capacitors and looking for any damage and fortunately it's all ok. I smell the PSU to check if there's any short circuit occured and there was no foul odor or something. I removed the PSU from the casing for and opened it for inspection. I found out that the fuse exploded and broke into 2 pieces. I don't bother to repair it but instead I bought a new 700 watts PSU.

After replacing the PSU I turned on the PC but i found out that the CPU fan will spin for half a second and turn off. Led green light is on but no post or beep sound. I did some troubleshooting and these are as follows:

1. I removed the motherboard from the casing and put it on top of the table with cardboard underneath.
2. Clean the RAM stick and tried on other slot.
3. Clean CPU heatsink and fan since it was clogged by dirt and replace thermal paste.
4. Replaced the CMOS battery and move jumper pin 1-2 to 2-3 for about 2 minutes.
5. I turn on the PC without the video card, hardisk and keyboard.

SPECS:
Motherboard: asus h81m-c
CPU: Intel core I7
RAM: 8gb

Btw, prior to the above steps, right after replacing PSU I just clean the RAM and turn it on but ... Read more

Hello i've Toshiba C55-B5302 when i try to turn on and then turn off again. You can turn on the laptop as normal. The LED lights on the laptop light up, but once this is done, the laptop just runs for 5 seconds and it automatically shuts off again. You can hear the fan run for a while but other that it just turns off. So what is the cause for a problem like this? i've dissasemly it and clean the fan there's no dust, i've remove the battery and keep the power button for 60sec read it on other forum, press many times the power button without the battery and the charger to reset the bios info, but without any luck.

It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in.   I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display.  I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it.  Please help!

If you upgraded, did the problem exist immediately after the upgrade and before any updates were performed?

It all started with my motherboard not picking up any IDE drives, so i turned the pc off, took all ide cables out and stuck them back in, and the pc began to boot and i had windows loaded. After restarting it, the motherboard told me no IDE drives were being detected again. So i shut the pc down... done the same thing, this time around though, nothing will boot/power up.

If i take the bios battery out for 5 minutes or so, the entire computer will have power running to it as soon as i put the plug into the back of the powersupply, this is without pressing the power button on the front, all fans and mobo lights are up, but the PC will not turn off unless i flick the PSU switch or simply unplug it, after doing this though it wont power up normally.

I guess this is a problem with the motherboard and will probably need replacing, i just want to really be sure this is the case before ordering new parts.

Answer:Computer won't turn on, help

You do not need to replace the motherboard, but you have work to do.
First, we need the brand and model of computer, brand and age of hard drive, and other details about your system... OS, power supply, memory, age of components.
Did the failure to detect the hard drive happen suddenly? What antivirus and antispyware programs are you using. It appears you have some infestations or corruption that needs attention.
Have you tried replacing your cables?
As I understand your message, you have two issues: Your hard drive is not detected, and your computer will not turn off when asked to do so by Shut down in Windows.

Hey
I have a computer here. It turned on earlier. I attempted to install Windows and while "Windows is loading files" it just turned off.
The motherboard is 8s661fxm

When I press the power button it doesn't doa thing. I have tried all sorts of things with no luck whatsoever.

Any ideas? other than the Mobo is dead?

Answer:Computer won't turn on

If you are getting no fans or anything when you hit the power button the first thing I would look at would be the power supply. Do you have access to another that you know is OK, that you could swap in to test with. If you do test, do it with the minimum possible hardware (CPU, 1 stick RAM and Video) just to see if it starts powering up.

Check, then double check that all the cables and connectors are securely in place.

Hi. Recently, my younger brother, told me that his computer could not turn on. So, the first thing I did was to check if it was his charger's issue. It seems like it wasn't. Then, I decided to try again with my computer's charger instead on his computer. Well, I noticed something. When I plug my charger into the power outlet, there would be a light to signal power is flowing. And when I plug it into my own computer, it stays on. However, when I plug the charger into my brother's computer, the light vanishes. Is there something wrong with his computer? Thank you !

Answer:Computer does not turn on

Sounds like his charger is bad. If your charger works, and his doesn't, it's bad.

Question: Turn computer off.

Rather perplexed over here.  XPS8910 with a new M.2 drive installed with Windows 10 Home Edition.  If I select "shut down" or "sleep", the computer will shut down and then two seconds later it will start for a second and then go into either "shut down" or "sleep" as selected... I'm quite annoyed with this.  Is this a BIOS issue or is this a Windows issue?  What should I do to fix this?

Hi Guys,
I have a Compaq D510 SFF with 1.8 P4/256RAM/80Gb IDE HDD , which isn't turning on, no motherboard light, no sound, no nothing, just blank. Then a few hours later everything would be fine, its been doing this for about two weeks now. If any of you have any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Answer:Computer won't turn on.

Sounds like a Power Supply issue. Try to remove the power cable, wait 15 seconds so it can drain the power, move the voltage switch (red switch on back, you will need a pen or flathead) to 230, wait 10 seconds then move it back to 115. Plug in the power cable and test it.

Sorry for this odd question, but someone who knows a lot more than me about computers, told me that it's not good for a computer to be turned on and off a lot. Let's say, for example, I use my computer 5 times per day, and I turn it on and off each time, would it be better to leave it on all day, and just turn it off at night? To me it shouldn't matter other than the on/off switch getting a little extra wear. So, is he right? Thanks. Ed.

Answer:Is it ok to turn computer on and off a lot?

Well i would say no it would not harm it.I do it some times but most of the time i leave mine on all the time.Turning it off and on should not harm the computer. Its kina meant to be turned off lol thats way they invented the off and on button just make sure you log off with the windows it self not the button unless you don't have any other option.

Hello,

I have an Acer Extensa 4420. It's a really old computer, but it has been working up until about 2 months ago. I had put it away in storage due to not having a need for it anymore. (It was a bit slow.) Well, I went to turn it on one day, about two months ago, and it simply wouldn't. Now, this pattern does change. (I have the cord hooked to it to ensure that it is not the battery. The charging light comes on.) Sometimes the power button will turn green and then instantly blink back off. More often, though, the power light will turn on, the fans will start whirring, etc., and then it will shut back off. It will then turn back on, as if rebooting itself, and then shut off entirely. During, this process, the screen never turns on. There are times when pushing the power button will not turn the computer on at all.

The screen on the Acer is beaten up. It appears as if there is a nick in a small black cord on the right side of the computer that connects to the screen. I just replaced the screen about a year ago, though. I have also already tried to reseat the ram modules by popping them out and putting them back in. This did nothing. I then tried replacing the CMOS battery. This also caused no change. I did put electrical tape on the nick in the screen cord, but I don't know if that is even helping much at all.

Does anyone have an idea as to what the issue could be? I don't have any on the information on this laptop backed up. I've had it for about 6 years... Read more

I go to turn it on, the fans start up and the computer seems asif it's going to boot for 6 seconds, then for 4 seconds it stops and tries again... It repeats this process over and over. It also makes a clicking noise which i don't know where is from whilst it is trying to boot.

I think my PSU might have just broke but i'm really not sure. I haven't added anything to the computer for it to need more power. One thing i WAS thinking was that, i filled up my hard drive, but even when it was full i had turned it off and on and it worked, just 24hours after that... Is the problem likely to be a PSU because i don't want to buy one and not be able a refund?

Help me please as i'm really needing my computer back to apply for jobs and other research.

Hello,
My Dell Desktop computer will not turn on anymore. First off, it started going into sleep mode and then it finally just would not turn on anymore. Any suggestions on what could be wrong with it? Thank you.

Answer:Computer will not turn on

Hi Renee2014, and welcome TSG.

Was the computer displaying a message that it was going into sleep mode before doing so or was it just suddenly shutting down?

Is it not giving any kind of indication that it is trying to turn on when you press the power button?

These days, power supplies are not totally powered down when the computer is turned off. They provide a small amount of power to the motherboard, if for no other reason, than to allow the computer to be turned on using the front panel power button. Many power supplies and motherboards have LED indicators that indicate the presence of this voltage. You would need to open up the computer to see if such indicators exist and if they are lit.

What is the full model number of the computer?

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but here we go.

I recently (last week) bought and built my computer that you can see in my specs on my profile, and all worked and worked well. Now, I'll be honest, I was running the computer for a 2 days with no system/case fans running. The stock case fans didn't work. So when my PC died while I was using it, I assumed it was heat damage to my CPU. After it died, it wouldn't switch on again. I would press the power button and nothing would happen. It was as if it wasn't connected to any power at all. However, the PSU's power switch LED is working and it powers the USB ports. This I have tested. So as far as I can see, its not the PSU. And the fact its powering the USB ports via the motherboard would lead me to assume that is working fine too. The GPU and HDD have nothing to do with powering up the system as far as I'm aware so I have assumed they work fine too. So I replaced the CPU today, but still the computer will not power on. So, its not the CPU's fault... I now ask you all if you know of any parts that could be causing this or any solutions to the problem. I have considered that it may be the power button but it wouldn't explain the mid use shut down I don't think, also I don't have any idea how to test it.

Note: I never ran any temprature checks during my short use of it so don't ask for tempratures, but I did have the side of the case off and the temp... Read more

Ok, so my problems all started a couple days ago when my internet connection kept going from "Network Cable Disconnected" to Now Connected status alot, every second sometimes. But then it started to randomly stop sending a video feed, and my monitor would go to power save mode. It seems whatever it is doing is not just affecting the video, because it also won't shut down, I have my computer set to shut down the computer when I press the power button, but when I press it it does nothing when it goes into this Blackout. The computer seems to be running, it's not making any weird sounds and the MB isn't beeping at me.

But now it won't even start up anymore, I'll turn it on and it will just immediately go black as mentioned above. I'm not sure if it's the motherboard failing, or maybe the Power Supply not supplying enough power to everything? I can't even get to the Bios screen anymore.

I should note that while trying to fix it before, I turned off the power supply while the computer was powered down, letting the light on the motherboard go off, then flipped it back on, and it worked fine for a while, but that doesn't work anymore.

Any ideas? My specs are in my sig.

Answer:Turn Computer on and.. Nothing

i would say you're correct in saying its either the psu or the board. if you can borrow a psu from a friend and see if their psu powers up your system. if it does then get a new psu, if not, i would say your board is shot.

i'm leaning more towards the board being shot though.

Well I got up this morning and my computer won't turn on at all. And I don't really know what to do. Yesterday it was having some problems and just restarting over and over.. Uh, so I decided I'd see if there's anything to do in this situation. Thanks for the answers.

Answer:Computer won't turn on..

Are the lights coming on at all? If not, my first guess would be the power supply. A failing power supply will reset your computer. There are a myriad of other issues it could be (motherboard for one), but that is the easist to test out. If you are fairly knowlegable, find a computer that is similar to yours and see if you can swap the power supply. Just be very careful to put all the right cables back, and don't force them into place.  Good luck!

Just because the green led is on doesn't mean the power supply is good.

Shut off the machine with the switch on the power supply and unplug it. then plug it back on and turn on the switch and try powering up the PC again.

Just got some new components for my PC after a failure. I have got an ASUS P4V8X-X motherboard with a 2.4GHz Celeron D and 256MB RAM. I connected everything up (inc. Can anyone help???

About last week, I was just browsing on the internet and suddenly the computer shut down unexpectedly. The computer restarted shortely after that, and about 5 seconds later, it shut down again. It kept on restarting and shutting down 5 seconds later.

After 3 hrs, it finally started up and I was able to go on the desktop screen. At first I thought it wasn't going to happen again, but suddenly, after an hour or so, the computer turned off without any warning!

Then it kept on restarting and shutting down after 5 seconds and kept on doing that. Sometimes it doesn't shut off after 5 seconds and manages to go to the desktop screen, but it always shuts down unexpectedly.

It's been happening over a week now, and today, my computer wouldn't start at all. I pressed the power button but it wouldn't do anything. When I unplug the power cord on the back of my computer and reconnect it, the computer turns on, but it shuts down after 5 seconds.

I read some articles about why this could be happening. I thought it was the heating problem so i opened up the computer and cleaned almost everything. I know it can't be a virus because I scanned the computer when I was able to use it for a short period of time. I don't know whats going on! Please help me!!!

Answer:Computer Won't Turn On!

Usually the first thing that I would check would be the power supply. If there is an led on the back of the computer, near where the power cord plugs in, let us know if it blinks rapidly when you try to turn on the computer.

I own a Dell Dimension E510, which stopped turning on a few weeks ago. At first, it wouldn't boot into windows, but the power button would flash orange (like stand-by).

I brought it in to a PC shop, and they cleaned a lot of dust off it, which made it work for a day. However, it wouldn't even respond when I pressed the power button on after that.

I brought my PC in again to the shop, and they figured it was the power supply. So, I replaced the power supply, and the power cord, and it worked fine in the shop. However, when I returned home, it still wouldn't turn on.

I figured it was the power outlet, but it wasn't. My computer wouldn't turn on with any of the outlets in my house (which work fine).

So, I'm left with this problem: My PC turns on in a neighborhood store, but won't turn on in my house.

Please help!

Note. I posted this previously in the 'Other Hardware' section, but I'm not sure how to delete it (I'm not trying to double post)

Answer:Computer won't turn on

Maybe your computer needs more power then the socket seems to be giving it. Is their anyway that you could try it round a friend or neighbours house maybe?

Hey everybody

When I got into work today, one of the computers here at work would not turn on. When plugged in, I hear a high squealing noise, not really loud, but a high pitched noise. When I hit the power button, nothing happens. No lights or anything.

Any ideas on what is going on here? And is it feasible to fix?

Answer:Computer will not turn on

The noise you hear may be a power supply failing OR if could be an alarm for a no fan / low fan speed. The first thing I would do would be to open the case and see if your fans are spinning when you power on. Once you are sure you have all fans running and it still will not boot, I would try swapping out the power supply with a known good unit.

I haven't seen many hardware specific (non-Windows) questions, so I'm not sure how much of this you can answer. Basically, my computer quit turning on. Nothing happens. I am a tech support person (hardware & software), so I am trying to figure it out myself. I have a generically put-together pc. Here is what was happening before it refused to turn on: A few weeks prior, it started periodically shutting down by itself. It also started giving me periodic Windows 98 blue screen OE errors periodically about the same time, forcing me to reboot. Also, the CPU fan would make a lot of noise, particularly when booting up; sometimes I would press on it and it would stop. I upgraded my CPU and motherboard shortly before all this started happening(AMD 550). The most recent thing that happened, about a week before it crashed, was the on-off button would not turn the pc off (the button in the front, not in the rear). So, here are my guesses: 1) the power needs to be replaced, or 2), the cmos is frozen (highly unlikely since I didn't change any jumpers), or 3), the
broken CPU fan caused the CPU to overheat and fryed it (although a friend of mine says the pc should still turn on at least if this happened), or 4) the on-off button is broken (which I doubt since the wires behind it look intact - I don't have one of those voltmeters handy or I would check the wires for power, at this point I haven't yet cut the wires in order to put them together to test for power)... Answer:computer will not turn on at all

Usually I have seen a bad motherboard cause this but it might be the cpu also. Try reseating all boards and processor and connectors and see if that helps. If you still have the old motherboard you could connect it up and see if your power supply switch etc are ok. I think AMD processors require a 300 watt power supply. See the AMD site for approved ones. When connecting your old motherboard you dont need to put it in the case just make sure it isnt shorting to anything. Just a note if a atx power supply wont shut off normally hold the button in for about six seconds which will force it to shut off. BOL

AMD Anthlon 64 x2 Processor
400 GB harddrive
windows vista home premium

I was turning my computer off one day and when it would not turn off, I held the power switch and it turned on and off real quick. Now when I turn it back on, it will turn off when it hits the Windows Vista loading screen, like right when it gets to it, it does not restart just shuts off and it is annoying. People are saying its the PSU which I doubt it because when I hit F2 or F10 to go to those menus when I first start my computer, the computer stays running perfectly until it try to boot it in safe mode or boot it normal mode.

This happened to me before when a friend messed my computer up and I found my old installation disk for vista and put it in and it worked perfectly, but now when I try to put the disk in, it shuts off when it tries to load up.

When all that happens, my computer will not even turn on when I hit the power switch, it only turns on after I unplug the computer, open the case, close the case, then plug it back in, but when I turn it off, it shuts off at the loading screen and then wont turn on again until I unplug it all again, this sucks.

I tried re-seating the CMOS battery or whatever its called, someone said it might work, but it did not. My computer does the same thin... Read more
