I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: HOW TO UNLOCK A DRIVE PROTECTED BY BITLOCKER WITHOUT ITS PASSWORD AND RECOVERY KEY ?(I LOST MY PASSWORD AND RECOVERY KEY)

Hi ashish,
The drive must be unlocked by the recovery password or recovery key. But you lost it and haven?t print the recovery information or save it anywhere. No any other method to help you.
I am sorry for that. I suggest you consult professional data recovery company.

Hi,
Correct bitlocker password & RecoveryKey Can't unlock my drive
I have 2 hard drive in my computer, 1st one runs OS, 2nd one using bitlocker to encrypt and works fine until........... I re-installed the OS on the 1st Drive (didn't touch 2nd drive at all, the only thing is that during the installation, I manually turned
off the power once due to the computer locks up.)
Now when I try to open my 2nd hard drive typing bitlocker password, always says: wrong password.
Then I was trying to use the Recovery Key to unlock, but always say:  the key does not match the drive. -- I am pertty sure this key is for this drive.
Is there anything else I can try? Or any more information needed to help me get my data back?
Thanks

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

Hey
My company is updating our windows, servers, desktops nearly every thing. we were asked to back up all our data on external drives, but we were forced to encrypt the drives with Bit locker, after the immigration to the new hardware and windows 10, I opened
my external HDD and USB Drive using the passwords I set earlier, and as I don't need the drives to be encrypted anymore, I right clicked the drives then choose "Remove password" which I thought it will decrypt the drives and no passwords will be
required anymore. I was surprised to find that my drives are still encrypted, and all what happened is that the password unlock option for my Bit locker encrypted drives was removed. it now only displays to option to unlock (another USB drive or recovery key)
and I don't have both. all what i have is the passwords that I set to the drivers, but the unlock with password option vanished.
can i return that option back so i can unlock both my drives using password? can you please advice?
thanks in advance.

I have activated Bitlocker on two identical W8.1 pro machines, and on the first (C1) I have the option to use a password when logging into the computer, but the other (C2) only ask for the recovery key from USB stick. Both computers have no TPM, so Bitlocker is enabled without TPM, but this should give the possibility to start the computers using a password on 8.1 pro.

Can I somehow add a password to C2, or is my only option to remove the Bitlocker encryption and try again?

Hello,
I have a few related questions around BitLocker and TPM.  But first some background, I have Windows 8.1, I have BitLocker turned on, and I have my BitLocker Recovery Key.  I did not manually
initialize the TPM.  I don't recall ever having a TPM Owner password.  But I do see that I can auto generate one, although I have not tried.
1) Is the BitLocker Recovery Key the same thing as the TPM Owner Password?
2) I don't recall ever being provided the TPM owner password during the BitLocker setup?  Where would I find it?  I chose the option to save the BitLocker Recovery Key to my Microsoft Account, but I don't see any TPM Owner Password?
3) I have read that in some Windows OS systems the TPM is automatically initialized, but the TPM Owner Password is not retain where a user can find it.  Is it best practice to even try to obtain the TPM Owner Password if it is indeed not retained on
my machine for user viewing.
I have already spent several hours reading many of your technet articles.  All very helpful, but I did not see any that specifically addressed my specific situation.
4) I am assuming that it would be best if I obtained the TPM Owner password.  Is that not necessarily true?
Thanks

Hey, I'm trying to configure my secondary internal HDD to lock with bitlocker, since acronis won't back it up well with truecrypt, but I still want to encrypt my OS drive with truecrypt since I don't have a TPM, and have to use a USB key to unlock it at startup, which I think is a vulnerability since anyone can just grab my USB and plop it into the computer. Is there any way I can bypass this restriction, or even better, have BitLocker require a startup PIN without having a TPM?

Answer:The OS drive must be protected by Bitlocker to automatically unlock.

Hello ! I have 2 Lenovo Ideapads: an i7 Y560P, and an i5 Y560. The i7 Y560P stopped being able to run from the ac power adapter, and stopped being able to recharge the battery. Out of warranty. Afraid to take it to a "repair" shop, they'd probably charge $150+ just to look at it. So, I purchased (on Ebay, assume no warranty) an i5 Y560. This way I could charge the i7 Y560P's battery in the i5 Y560, and be able to get at least an hour or so use out the i7 Y560P, and I would also have a i5 Y560 for when I needed to be mobile. Long story short, an attempt at installed a dual boot Ubuntu Linux system on the i5 Y560 went terribly wrong, and Windows is trashed. I attempted to see if the D:\ recovery partition might be of any value. It is password protected. Contacted the eBay seller, and was kind enough to suggest possible passwords she might have used. All failed. WHERE I AM NOW: I took the good hard drive from the i7 Y560P that won't accept AC power, and placed it in the i5 Y560 whose hard disk Windows 7 OS was trashed. So, at least I have one working computer that accepts AC  and will recharge the battery, and has a functional Windows 7 OS. QUESTIONS: i7 Y560P(1) What are the possible causes of the i7 Y560P stopping accepting power from AC and being unable to recharge a battery?(2) Any self-diagnostics I might be able to do to rule a potential cause "in" or "out"(3) Would taking it for repair be cost-effective, or would i be cheaper to jus... Answer:Lost my windows bitlocker drive encryption recovery key

Hello @Destro78 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. BitLocker keys (for personal devices) are stored inside or in many case they are back-up to Microsoft cloud with your Microsoft account. Since this is a tablet, I suspect that I suspect your recovery key is available in Microsoft's OneDrive spaceHere are instructions how you can recover the key as well as how to get back to business.>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html  >> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=237614https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey Login to the MS account there and check.Use the key to login to your PC.Eventually, if you prefer you can disable BitLocker and turn off device encryption, or save/print the key offlinePlease, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it.  More info - re. Hi,
The other day for some stupid reason I decided to change my laptops password to whatever it was I was thinking of that day and now I can't remember what it is. There is a partitioned recovery drive on the computer that I am wondering if I can access to reformat the hardrive so I can get back on my computer. On my old desktop the restore option would come up on the BIOS screen but now I don't know if I have to be logged onto access it because I can't seem to find an option for it. Please help me this is my new laptop and now I can't even use it.

It's a Vista Home Premium Dell
and has a partitioned recovery drive in it.

Thanks,
James

Answer:Password Lost/ Recovery help

Dell doesn't display the key sequence to access the recovery partition on boot. Unless Dell changed it, it will be CTRL-F11. You need to start repeatedly punching this in as soon as the BIOS checks starts up.

Remember, this reformats the hard drive and you will loose all your data.

Hello, I am buying an HP laptop at a liquidation auction, but it is password protected.  Is there a way to break into it? Thank you

Answer:Unlock a password protected PC

If it is simply the Windows logon password that is easily fixed. If it is a power on (BIOS) password that requires the password before the notebook will even boot up-that is not so easy. Depending on whether it is a business class(Elite,Probook, etc) or consumer class(Pavilion, etc) will determine that. A business class normally requires service from HP,with proper ownership certification. Many of the consumer class can be cleared, but not sure all. What model are you looking at?

Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro. My computer is password protected. If I should forget my password, how can I get into my computer? Is their a way to make a password recovery disk?

Thank you.

Answer:Lost Password Recovery Disk

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305

This link explains it all.

Be sure to create a password reset disk NOW before you need it, and keep it somewhere safe. If you change your password, you'll need to make a new disk. If you don't create the disk before you need it, if you ever do need it, you'll be out of luck because you cannot create the disk without knowing the password.

How do i remove or change my windows vista administrator password without a set up disk or recovery disk when the only user showing is administrator? Thanks

Answer:lost administrator password and no set up or recovery disk

What type of computer do you have? Was Windows Vista pre-installed by the manufacturer, for example like a Dell, HP, Gateway computer?

Or, was it a generic, home or custom-built computer?

Since Windows XP, the next O/S's don't allow you to boot to Safe Mode and log on that way, to remove passwords.

You were advised by the software to create a Password Reset disc.....many people do not do that, though.

About the only safe, or legal way around this is to reinstall. You can use a borrowed disc, provided you match the License your computer has, to the disc you install from.

A Full System Recovery will also work but I am not sure a Repair Install would.....perhaps.

Keep in mind that you will most likely lose the hidden partition recovery, if you choose to do a full manual reinstall, using the regular Microsoft Windows Vista DVD that matches your License. It will require a format of the drive and you will lose your own files, so you can connect the drive to a working computer to rescue them before you wipe it out.

Shell. If it is a BIOS or power-on password you have a few options??? There are no master password generators for ProBooks or EliteBooks and most business class laptops. You will need to contact HP. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html?jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0003 Or look at this link. http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49497-HP-Probook-Elitebook-BIOS-Password-Reset-Utility I have a master external USB HDD with his programs that I have removed hundreds of passwords with Mazzif's help. Mazzif?s program will detect your UUID, Serial Number and model number then use that information to produce an .exe file to clear the password. If you find it to be too technical then. Replace the BIOS chip.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Probook-4230s-4330s-4430s-4530s-4730s-5330m-5320m-5310m-Bios-Chip-No-Pass... If you have good soldering skills order the BIOS chip. You will receive a picture of the chips location after purchase. REO I must inform you that these services are not endorsed by HP, and that HP is not responsible for any damage that may arise to your system by using these services. Please be aware that you do this at your own risk.

Hi there.

Does he still work in Dell or i have to contact another person?
I know my Service Tag and can tell it to someone who will tell me how to unlock the HDD.
Greetings

Answer:Password protected hard disk. How to unlock it?

This is a two-dimensional issue - there's the system (BIOS) portion of the password.  To have that cleared, you'll need to call Dell support with verification of ownership.
This will not, however remove the password from the drive.  The cheapest solution is that once the CMOS portion is clear, to replace the drive with a new one.
If you need to have the password removed from the drive to access the data on it, you'll need to send the drive to a recovery service with the tools to do that job -- it will cost more than a replacement drive by at least a factor of about four, so if you don't need the data, simply replace the drive.

I have an older Laptop that operates on  Windows 7 Ultimate,I have the Bitlocker Drive Encryption on and encrypted for Drive C:   I now started the process of encrypting my external usb hdd Drive E: which has a long way to go for it's large
size. During the encryption I needed to disconnect it so I paused the encryption like it says to do before removing or changing any files on it. I then plugged my drive into a newer laptop I have that operates on Windows 10,. I was prompted for the Bitlocker
Drive Encryption Password screen like normal just like on my Windows 7 laptop so I enter the password and it was correct and it began the encryption process again. When I finished with what I needed to do on the Windows 10 laptop I paused the encryption again
and disconnected the drive. I am now back on my Windows 7 Ultimate OS and plugged the drive in, Bitlocker Encryption Password Screen comes up again and I entered my password but now for some reason it's saying the password is incorrect?  "But It's
not incorrect",is there a reason why this has happen and a way to fix it? My second issue is that I have the recovery key written down on paper but on the fifth line of the eight lines that makes the recovery key I left out a number, did not write it correctly,
there for I cannot just reset my password using the key and get back to normal again. Any way to find the lost number to the key? As I do have the rest of it written correctly please help tha... Read more

So, I installed Windows 10 last week. Yesterday I explored a bit and discovered Windows Edge, their new email/ outlook client. I attached my personal Gmail address to the service as well as my corporate address. My corporate account required me to create a new password that fit my company's security standards, which I did, but, after feeling like my company address was restricting how I use my personal home computer, I removed that address. Here's where I get fuzzy, I cannot, for the life of me remember, if I changed my password back to one that didn't conform to my company's security standards or if I left it alone. All I know is that once my computer locked later that night, I was unable to get back in. I've tried every permutation of every password, including that corporate password, I've ever used with no success.

I do not have a password reset disk nor do I have a system repair disk with which to reinstall Windows 10.

So, how screwed am I? Will I have to reinstall Windows 7, the last OS I have a disk for, and hope I can reupgrade to Windows 10?

P.S.
I did not attach my MSN email address (aka my Microsoft Account) to my computer, so resetting my password that way is a no go.

Answer:Forgot Windows 10 password, no repair or password recovery disk.

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

Answer:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hey Guys,
Im new here so apologies if this in the wrong section.
Basically, massive problem here - I have a WD MyBook External HDD and have used BitLocker to Go on it from Windows 7 RC, and I kept the recovery key in my main HD Documents folder. (This was a x86 install).
Last night I (stupidly) backed up the key to the External HDD automatically forgetting it would be locked later (as it unlocks on startup so I forget it would be secured elsewhere) and went ahead to clean format my PC to a Windows 7 x64 RTM Install.

Now, when I come to plug in the drive today, instead of prompting for a password as it SHOULD, I instead am askked for the recovery key which I stupidly enclosed in the External HD itself.

Naturally, this External Drive contains my life, several GB of music, all of my college work, images, videos and so forth and I cannot really do with losing it all.

The only other information I can give is that at no point was the HD fully encrypted by BLocker, instead I used to cancel it at each start up and it never passed 3.5% so does this mean not ALL of the data is encrypted and maybe the key I copied into there last night may still be safe (no BL encryption went on after copying it?)

If so, how would I go about possibly finding this? Is there any other way to access the drive without getting the BLocker popup? I already tried a Live boot disk, cmd prompt etc?

Thank you.

i encrypted my 1TB External HDD took backup of my laptop on it (including recovery keys backup files). formated my laptop reinstalled windows and now forgot the password for External HDD.

Any suggestions in recovering the key which is already backed up in the encrypted HDD.

thinking to format HDD and than attempt data recovery but not sure if i will be able to recover all or nothing.

Answer:Bitlocker Recovery Key - lost

Hello Teky, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you format the encrypted drive, it will pretty much destroy any chance of recovering the drive.

If you don't have the BitLocker recovery key or password, then decrypting or recovering the drive will just about be impossible.

Hi,
Actually i saved data in partition, then after added bitlocker security.
I have password and key also.
Then I unlocked it for sometime, Due to my friend mistake, he deleted entire data from drive (which was enabled for bitlock). Data was huge so it just deleted without going to recyclebin.
So now i can recover data with DATA RECOVERY TOOL from partition.
But Its encrypted. bcuz in that drive data was encrypted.
So when i try to access its marked as not read (encrypted).
I think there is no way to put same data back in bitlock cover and unlock it or other solution.
If you have some suggestions, Please suggest.
I will be very thankfull to you.

I have recently had a malware attack, and a friend was able to access my hard drive and disinfect it. When I try to boot to this hard drive now, Windows gets me as far as my wallpaper, but no desktop functionality (no icons, taskbar, etc.). I have put this drive in another computer to try and scavenge data from it, but the data is password protected. Is there a way to either 1) do a Windows repair, or 2) get past this password when accessing this hard drive on another machine? I understand you can change a setting in the registry, but don't know how to change the registry when the drive is in another machine, or change it in my machine when I have no desktop functionality. I do appreciate your wisdom!

Hi, I have a pen drive by Disgo 256mb that i need to access. It contains a password protection program which my mother set up on the stick. She has forgotten to write the password down and has forgotten to write her email address down which she set up at the same time which has her password for it, stored on. Is there any way i can get access to the pen drive data to back up for her that is stored on the protected area of the pen drive? I've heard you can get a program called data doctor, that scans the drive and allows you to backup the data, but unless i buy the whole program i cannot recover the information.

Would this program get by the password protection on the drive?
If not is there another way to do it?
Are there any free programs or ways to gain access to it?

I don't use pen drives myself but my mother has some university work she needs to get off the stick. Nothing sensitive but just important for her work.

Hope anyone can help and hope this request is not against any rules. Sorry if it is.

I have a brand new T410s which has BIOS 1.34 installed from the factory. I used the BIOS option to set a hard drive password, choosing the "user" (not "user+master") option. Since I was just testing, I set an easy to remember password of "password". It has a Samsung SSD. However, now it won't accept "password" to unlock the drive and won't let me back into the BIOS unless I remove the drive before powering up! Is there any known bug with setting the drive passwords from this new BIOS? I have had many Thinkpads over the years, and have never seen one do this...

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Set hard drive password and now cannot unlock!

"There was also a problem with what was a critical update, in which the BIOS update program added an extra random bit to the password data, which resulted in users being locked out of their systems. The update to the BIOS was unusable, because the BIOS password was required to access the BIOS. While Lenovo claimed that this problem only affected 1% of its computers, these 1% were forced to resort to inconvenient and sometimes expensive fixes."(From Wikipedia)I'm pretty sure the standard procedure for BIOS updating is to remove all BIOS based passwords before updating. But otherwise, I don't think it'd be very easy to unlock the drive.

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

Answer:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

Ok here is the deal. I had a new laptop that dual booted vista and linux. the vista partitioned was encrypted with bitlocker. I decide to give windows 7 a try so I repartition the drive in to one large volume, format and install windows 7. Everything worked perfectly. The problem is after about a week I realize there was some important files on the vista partition before I wiped everything out. I have found several data recovery programs the can recover files after a format, however they only show files that where on the linux partition. My guess is that the bitlocker encryption is preventing these tools from finding any of the vista files.

So the question is, Does anyone know of a application or company that can recover files from a bitlocker'ed drive after it has been formatted.

As above really. Trying to create a network for file sharing, as have upgraded the 'server' (part of a Workgroup, not a Domain) from WinXP to Win7 and experienced problems ever since. Ironically the problems haven't mainly been with sharing files between Win7 and WinXP systems, but between 2 Win7 systems.

I bought a new Win7 laptop and tried to connect it to the server, but it hasn't had Read/Write privileges over the files in the Win7 server. Entering a username and password to gain access to the servers folders has not been a problem, and as far as I know, opening files such as documents has not been a problem either. However, when trying to save an edited document, access is denied, and if I try to open an executable file (this is necessary for a node installation), it prompts me for a network password.

Every combination possible of username and password from the 2 systems (including '\' or 'SYSTEMNAME\' before the username) has not worked. I tried syncing the times which was apparently a previous problem, but to no avail. I am unable to access Local Security Policy, as the server is running off Home Premium. I have tried creating a new workgroup, removing and changing passwords, enabling guest access to the network through the Windows Resource Kit Command Shell, creating identical users on both computers, but nothing appears to have worked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I turned off password protected file sharing. When connecting from my notebook, which I have the same username/password on to boot, it asks for a password. Even when I enter the correct password, it denies access. Please help, as I'm stumped, and I believe I've stumped google as well.

Answer:Computer with password-protected sharing disabled asks for password

How did you turn off passwords?

To access a share, you need two permissions --

1: Share permissions are on the share itself. This gives you permission to read or write to/from the share.

2: File Permissions. These are on the security tab. If you don't have enough NTFS permissions to access the files, you're not going to be able to access the files no matter what share permissions you assigned.

You need to combine these rights to get the final permissions. The most restrictive permission will win out when determining your access.

But, if you're using the same username and password on both machines, and you still can't access it, it's possibly not a permissions issue. Which is why I asked how you turned off the passwords for shares.

Your harddrive doesn't only have a bitlocker password but bitlocker is also communicating with TPM chip on mainbord. And the mainboard has been swapped so you hav a new TPM chip with other secret key.

I've read through pages and pages of search results for this, but they all seem to be between Win7 and XP, or something not quite the same as my problem.

Here at home we are all using Windows 7 (a mix of Home Premium and Ultimate). I have an HTPC which has all our DVDs on. This PC has a few shares so we can access our movies across the network.

I have set up the shares using the Sharing Wizard thing, and set 'Everyone' to Read/Write. I can verify the permissions for the shares in Advanced Sharing > Permissions, and see that 'Everyone' has full control.

In the Network and Sharing Center, the settings for sharing are as follows:Network discovery = ON
File and printer sharing = ON
Public folder sharing = OFF (no need for it)
Media streaming = ON (for WMP, Xbox)
Use 128-bit encryption = ON
Password protected sharing = OFF
Allow Windows to manage Homegroup connections = ON
I should point out after the last bullet point that we are not using a Homegroup.

So with all that as it is, whenever I try to connect to the HTPC shares from another computer, I still get prompted for a username and password, with the "X Invalid user name and password" message beneath the text boxes. I can, however, connect without a problem from my laptop, which has the same username and password as the admin account on the HTPC.

The strange thing now - if I type "anonymous" into the username box and try to connect, I get in. Everything then works as it should. So either all... Read more

Answer:Password protected sharing is OFF, still asked for username/password?

You might want to check that the time/date settings are correct on the HTPC. If they aren't correct on one of your machines it will give you a password prompt as you described.

Also under power options, make sure that it's not set to require a password when coming out of sleep state.

Go to Control Panel, then Power Options "look upper left side". Click "Require a password on wakeup".

Select the radio button "Don't Require a Password" and then Save Changes. Your done.

I just started using BitLocker on a Windows7 Computer and am confused about one specific aspect of recovering data drives. I have read through the tutorials on here but I can't seem to find anywhere that explicitly states if this is possible or not.

From this link: Regain access to a computer locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption

I see the statement that "To unlock the drive and regain access to your files, you will need the BitLocker recovery password. If you also encrypted data drives, you will need to have access to the drive that Windows is installed on as well."

My question is if my OS drive dies, will the data drives be recoverable with the password and/or recovery key?

I am not currently in such a situation but I would like to prepare for all possibilities. Since a TPM is needed to store the encryption keys on for the OS drive (I just ordered one but have not encrypted my OS drive yet), are the encryption keys for the data drives are stored on the OS drive itself and this is the issue?

Most of the things I find on Google when trying to search about this issue discuss recovering a data drive that is failing, not a data drive that is in good health but does not have access to the system drive. Can anyone say definitively if this is possible, or do I need to be prepared to lose all data on data drives if my system drive crashes?

Answer:BitLocker Encrypted Data Drive Recovery Question

Based upon what I have read, your data drives will be UNRECOVERABLE if your OS drive dies. I would consider setting up a RAID 5 array for your OS drive for redundancy, this way if one drive dies, all you have to do is replace it and the missing data pieces will be recreated.

Hi.

I know that this message is quite long, but I wanted to describe everything with details to ensure that I didn't miss any useful information. I lost all of the datas stored on my flash memory. I tried to find solution in other places in the web but I didn't solve the problem. Hope that you can help..

Few years ago I bought Imation 4GB pendrive flash memory. It has description as follows: HMDS-04GL, E-D900-03-3213. The memory was originally protected with a password. For a few yers everything worked well. When I was plugging the memory into my USB, windows explorer could only recognize a password application (as I remember it was called "Lock"). It didn't even give the information about a disc space. After I ran the application and typed a password, windows could see the disc space and files stored on it.

Some time ago I was working with Open Office and saving my files straight to my Imation flash memory (the memory was "opened" and the password was entered). The files saved on the memory but outside of the password protected area (despite the fact that there was no "public" area on the disc). For a few days after plugging the memory and before entering a password windows could see both: lock application and a few new open office files. After entering a password new open office files disappeared and I could see the content of the password protected area. That's how it worked for few days.

Then I plugged my flash memory and realized that ... Read more

Answer:password protected flash drive

You could try opening those files with an Ubuntu (or any other Linux distribution) live cd. If anything is going to work easily, it's going to be that.

Hello! I've got 20 gig laptop hard drive. Its a Hitachi Travelstar. I have no idea what data or operating system, if any, is on it because it is password protected.I've tried Google search and searched here at Computer Hope to find a way to use this hard drive. Other things I've tried is installing it a laptop and using a boot cd call Killdisk. I use this to clear HDDs of all data and partitions so I can put a fresh operating system on it. Thinking this process might clear the HDD and and password turned out to be a waste of time for the killdisk wont even access the HDD if it's password protected. Then I put it in a USB exterior HDD enclosure and tried to see if the killdisk would wipe the data via USB port. Don't ask me why I thought that would work. I don't think this is a microsoft password, when I try to boot with this harddrive windows doesn't even start when it says "hard drive is password protected" and has a box to enter the password. And the Killdisk wipes password protected operating systems.I'd rather not throw it out, I could use the 20gigs. Is there a way I can use this harddisk?I'd just like to wipe it an put a fresh operating system on it. Thanks for you time, Vic.

Answer:Hard drive password protected

Most of the branded Laptop come with a Tatto on the Mother Board and on the Hard drive  for security reason. as long as it was been running with the pre installed software from the manufacturer there exist no problem. but when it was been tried to other PC or the OEM OS is removed the company Tatto is removed and the hard drive will ask for the password for data security ploicy. The only way is to consult the service center of Manufacturer to obtain to get the Tatoo's reinstalled to solve the problem. Further, self handling of this situations make the problem still worse and chances of data loss.Rgd Kartheek M

I have a HP PAVILION g6 laptop that died. It was password protected. When hooking it up to another computer do I have to change ownership to access the files since I know the password? If I do, can someone link me to the direction/video how to do this on a machine that's running 8.1.

Answer:Password protected hard drive

Never mind...I started checking out the options. When I clicked on my user account I was given two options one said something about permissions the other said continue?... I chose the latter and can now access all my files.

Hello all,
I happen to have reinstalled by mistake a new Windows7 OS on a drive (I had two drives one with an OS and another with a bitlocker drive used for back up, both drives were IDE drives and the bitlocker was under slave mode if that can be of any help... ) that hosted VERY important data and was encrypted by Bitlocker. What can I please do to recover this formerly encrypted data? The drive is now recognized as an active healthy partition with an associated drive letter (different from the original one)
I don't have the bitlocker key.

If you need any hardware info please let me know.
Help me please!
Best,
Mike

Answer:Data recovery from a former bitlocker drive on which a new Win7 installation was made

Hi and welcome to TSF if you do not have a key to unencrypt you would not be able to access the info even if it was discovered and retrieved
