I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

I have a Dell Latitude 800 laptop. I need to dock it (because of a broken power adapter connector) but when I boot up I just get the message "your computer is docked but power adapter type not recognized. Press F1 to shut down" There is no other option but to shut down.

I am using a genuine Dell power adapter (PA-10) will full wattage (90W). I also just purchased a new adapter because the old one might have been damaged. There is no change in the message and I cannot boot the computer or charge the battery. Any way to get around this message--again I am using all genuine Dell equipment but the computer is not recognizing this.

Thanks!

I recently purchased an advanced mini dock  250410U. It did not come with a power supply. I checked with the manual and it is supposed to have a 90W power supply for the dock. I am currently using it with the 65W power supply that came with my T400 laptop and everything seems to be working ok. Should I be concerned? Am I loosing functionality some how?

Answer:T400 advanced mini dock 250410U POWER ADAPTER!

The 65W adapter may not supply enough wattage to the ATI T400 models running a demanding application. If you have the battery installed, you shouldn't lose any performance, although you might notice a very slight battery drain.

Hello fellow Thinkpad users, It appears that the 170W power adapter of my lenovo ultra dock just died. I can not charge my computer, neither directly neither via the dock. However, if I use my other 170W adapter supplied with my W541, both the dock and the laptop work. I have my dock serial number sucessfully recognized by the warranty check tool on lenovo's website, however, when I try to file a case, the system can no longer recognize my serial number. The dock was bought from the UK, do you know any Lenovo representative which I should contact. Very much appreciated for any input. Cheers,Deyan

I am planning on making this project myself but first I have one question. Here is the project I will be making:
http://siliconrepublic.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/arduino-based-pc-ambient-lighting.html

It says I need a 12V DC supply for powering the breadboard. When searching up for 12V DC supplies, I only get power supply's that plug into the wrong wall socket (I live in Australia).
Do I need to get something like the article suggests:
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-AC-Veh...1KZ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1297231222&sr=8-2

Or can I get something such as this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-1...?pt=AU_Laptop_Accessories&hash=item336678ae52
If the first option is the only possibility, how do I get the plug to go into my wall socket?
Also, how do I get the other end plugged into the breadboard when the product just has a single plug on the end?

Answer:What type of power adapter do I need?

You can use the Ebay adaptor, the easiest way to get 2 wires is to get a socket that fits the plug, like this one :- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-5-x-2-...05?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item4167b5b34d and solder 2 wires to that socket.

The circuit at your link uses a 2 wire plug into the breadboard, you would have to get a similar plug OR you could push bare wires into the breadboard.

OR you could cut the plug off to reveal the 2 wires but they will probably be quite thin and may not connect well if pushed into the breadboard holes.

So.. I see this problem has been posted about before, so I just wanna know what my options are.
This problem actually popped up on me a few months ago, but I was able to remove and insert the power cord a few times and the message would go away and I would be able to charge my battery. But as a month or two passed, it became more finicky, and I had to jiggle with it a little more, but still, I was able to charge my battery and use my laptop wire-free.
Now today, I've been trying all day, and cannot for the life of me get the battery to charge. I get the following message when I plug the wire in.
"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."
Also, I think its worth nothing that a lot of people mention that this error message comes up while they are booting their Laptops, mine only comes up once Vista is loaded and I attempt to reinsert the cord.
So, I have tried another Dell charger, a 90W one, and the same problem does occur (My original is a 65W). I am planning on getting a different battery tomorrow to see if it is the battery, as this ones usable life was getting quite low, down to barely a half hour per full charge. My warranty, although I'm not sure of the specifics, was not expired when this problem first came up, but is now expired by I would say 2 months at the most.

Hi!

Awhile ago, I started getting this error message when I started up my computer (after the initial Dell screen). It stated:

The AC adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance.

Strike the F3 key (before the F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning messages again.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the set up utility.

-----

I ignored this problem for awhile by just hitting F1. However, within the last month, it has gotten worse. Instead of this error message coming up when I started my computer - after the initial Dell screen, nothing would come up except a little flashing line in the top left hand corner of the screen, and the computer would not start up passed that. I proceeded to fiddle with the plug that I plug into my laptop from adapter. I would push it harder into the laptop and/or twist it in after I hit the start up button, waiting to see if, after the initial Dell screen, I could get the error message to come up again so I could hit F1 so my computer would actually start up. I really don't know if any of that helped, but I figure if it was the adapter, then I should try something like that. I even blew it the plug and into the socket in the laptop tonight. However, tonight, I almost could not get the computer to start up all the way - I kept getting the screen with the little blinking line after the initial Dell screen and no error message. Eventually, after trying several times, I did get the error ... Read more

Dell Inspiron 5755 with a 17" display, running windows 10 and the latest BIOS version from Dell(as of 3/2/2017). AC adapter power supply is a 45W, 19.5V, 2.31A, Dell power supply. It works fine and is not damaged, (lite is lit on the brick and proper voltage out verified by using a VOM). When running on battery for a while and the battery low window pops up, I plug in the power supply and immediately get a message "The AC adapter power type cannot be determined. I right clicked the battery icon in the system tray to display the Dell Power Manager. It says my battery is fine, 100% normal. As I unplug and plug in the power supply while the Dell Power Manager is up, I can see the word "charging" displayed in the management window for a bit, but then it disappears. The battery Icon itself shows that the power supply is plugged in as it displays a male electrical plug. If I remove the battery the laptop powers up fine. The BIOS in this machine does not display the charging device information, just that the battery is 100% normal. While in BIOS I hit the F9 key to reset basic bios functions to no avail. I also tried uninstalling the AC adapter and ACPI- compliant control method battery and re-booting to no avail. Hi there forum,

I just bagged an Lcd monitor for nowt but have no power supply for it.
The rear panel says 12V 3.0A DC power supply, but I can't find any of this type, I've tried Maplin, play.com etc and all they suggest is 300mA, now I thought 3.0 A was 3000mA?

Do I need to go back to electronic school basics?

This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

Answer:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

Hello Forum, I've just managed to break the head of my HP Envy 14 Spectre (14-3011tu) power adapter cable.  The power adapter is one of those HP travel adapters (65W - 574487-001) with interchangable heads.  I called HP Australia and various HP suppliers to see if I can get a replacement interchangable heads or even a whole replacement adapter however no one has them in stock (well they have the base power pack but not the correct head and no one know when they'll get extra stock).   Do anyone know if there is a similar HP laptop that uses the same long 4.7mm adapter head as the HP Envy 14 Spectre (14-3011tu) ? I'd like to buy one so that I can hack together a new interchangable head cable whilst I wait for new OEM stock to come in.   PS. I've already ordered a few of the aftermarket adapters off eBay that clam to fit the Envy 14 Spectre however they are a few micronos too thick to fit in the socket.  Image below just in case you're having the same headaches as me.  http://support.tmg100.com/HPEnvyPlusAM1.jpg Cheers!

I have confirmed personally with customers that this part number is the correct replacement for the DC cable that connects the power brick to the notebook.  687530-001 Click here to go to the HP Parts Store. At the top you'll see the Americas tab highlighted. Click on the Asia Pacific tab and choose Australia below. On the next page, in the Search by part number box, type in 687530-001 and press Enter. Then you can order it online or call the HP Parts Store at the number listed. Really hope this helps! Ok, I have read through these forums, and others, and have been unable to resolve this issue after trying like a million things. Here's my issue:
This is on a Dell Inspiron N4030 running Windows 8 Pro with Bios Revision A07.
On boot-up I get this message:
"The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined.
The battery may not charge.
The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.
Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for the best system performance.
Strike the F3 key (before F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see this power warning message again.
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility."

If I strike F2 and go into the bios it says "AC adapter type    unknown"
If I strike F1 to continue boot-up it boots into windows and then the battery indicator shows "Plugged in, Not charging"

In attempting to fix this issue I have:

1. Replaced the battery.
2. Replaced the motherboard
3. Replaced the Power Board
4. Swapped out the adapter with several other Dell adapters we have in the house (we have 6 Dell laptops). Adapter revisions used are A00, A01, and A02.
5. Did the whole rigamarole here: http://jeffreypalermo.com/blog/plugged-in-not-charging-windows-7-solution/
6. Tried various combinations of plugging/unplugging at different intervals and at different speeds that I have read on multiple sites.

I have a Yoga Pro 3 I purchased here in the US a couple of months ago.  This summer I'll be moving to Moldova (eastern Europe) with the Peace Corps and plan to take my Yoga with me. Moldova has 220-240V Type C power outlets.  Ideally, I'd like to purchase a power adapter for my Yoga that is already configured with a Type C plug.  The US Lenovo customer service staff can't seem to tell me if I can buy one. I know Germany also uses Type C but I don't see the option to buy the 40W power adapter on their site. The below adapter is available on the UK site but I'm not sure UK adapters are compatible with Type C outlets:http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/gbweb/LenovoPortal/en_GB/catalog.workflow:item.detai... Does anyone out there who travels to Europe or owns a Yoga Pro 3 in Europe have any tips on buying a native adapter?  If I need to use a convertor I will... I'm just trying to cut down on the accessories I have to carry with me.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 HDD damaged without any warning last week and cannot be repaired, so i had to replace it with another HDD. Everything works fine after that except that when i plugged in my AC adapter, the power warning message “The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation" will appear, and my battery will not charge.

Previously this power warning message will occur only when i didn't plug in properly and it worked fine after i replug the adapter. Since i changed my HDD, this warning message appears everytime i turn on my laptop. I tried updating the BIOS but it doesn't help, the problem is still there. I suspect that my AC adapter is damaged but when i tried it with another Inspiron 6400, it worked fine without the warning message appearing, that shows that there isn't any problem with my AC adapter..

Any solutions for this? I hope i don't have to change the motherboard or whatsoever, because my laptop is out of warranty. Is it something to do with the configuration? - since i formatted my computer and reinstalled everything..

thanks heaps for any comments!

Answer:Power adapter type cannot be determined after replacing new HDD

You may have a damaged DC jack in the laptop if the adapter works on another laptop, which would go with you replugging the power adapter to clear the error in the past. Its not uncommon for the jacks to break from the motherboard and require re-soldering, in some cases the jacks crack or break and need to replaced. To get at the jack you will need to have the laptop completely disassembled.

P.S. 'spoiled' isn't not the correct term to use with failed electronics.

Hello, from few days a have problem with my AC power adapter. My system says: "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined... lalalala" when my Windows says Plugged in, not charging. CPU performance does not exceed 0,78GHz.I tried to uninstall the drivers - nothing.
I tried update my BIOS - nothing.
Replace AC - nothing
Exclude malfunctioning AC adapter.
Sometimes after a few connections begins to charge my battery, and it is a day where you do not try to charge.
But I found a solution, which is always charge my battery.
when i turn off the system, and then pulled out the battery. I push the button 'power on' for 10 seconds. And then I put back the battery and plug the charger. I turn on the system and everything works.
But once again, disconnect and plug the charger that stops charging

Where is the problem?

Answer:The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Inspiron 15 3542

Hi WLODZIAK,
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Since you have replaced the adapter, if the battery has good health, then then next part to be replaced would be the dc port - you would need this part - http://bit.ly/2d2vuCc
If nothing works, the motherboard might be at fault.
If the system is under warranty, Please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name, Phone#, Address and Email). If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

Suddenly, I started getting this message, when I turn my laptop on. It won't recognize my AC adapter, and won't charge the battery.
I have Dell Inspiron 6400/1505, windows XP.
I tried to flash BIOS, took out and put back in the battery. Check the plug, it looks ok. Battery's LED lights show it works fine.
I saw that so many people have this problem, but did not find any ways to solve it. Or any reasons why it happened. If anybody knows what to do, please share with us regular PC users.

Hi,
I'm using an XPS 13 9350, and 'm currently having an issue whereby when I start up my laptop I'm receiving the error message.
"AC power adapter and type cannot be determined, the battery may mot charge, the system will adjust the performance to match the power available"
The laptop sticks at 1% and wont charge. Although the light is still on the adapter, the light does not appear at the front of the laptop where it would usually indicate charging, apart from occasionally brief moments before the laptop boots following pressing the on button.
I have forced the latest BIOS update past the 10% battery block, however this has not helped.
I've had the laptop and adapter roughly a year.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Answer:Dell XPS 13 9350 - AC power adapter and type could not be determined

If "roughly" is less than a year, call Dell for warranty repair.
If it's over a year, first thing to try is a new OEM Dell AC adapter -- most computer shops should have one you can try.  If that fixes it, replace the AC adapter.  If not, replace the DC power jack:
www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx
And if that doesn't solve it, it's the charge circuit itself that's bad -- replace the mainboard.

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

`

Answer:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

Hi guys,i have a T430-2349 and a Mini Dock Plus, Series 3 (4338), bought from Ebay. Google told me, every series 3 dock should be compatible with my T430, except for maybe missing USB3 support. I connected the power supply to the dock and clicked in the T430. The LED on the dock lights up, but none of the power buttons switch on the notebook. When I remove the T430 from the dock again, it immediately starts on its own. When it is already running and I put it into the dock, it switches off immediately. I think it switches off internal power to get power from the dock, but there is no power.Has someone else ever had such a problem?Or maybe, can someone tell me where on the dock connector the 20VDC and GND pins are? So I could at least find out if the voltage is there, and be sure the dock is not broken. The seller on ebay assured me that the dock works, but who knows.. unfortunately I dont have another thinkpad for cross testing. The dock is, as far as i know, no USB 3.0 model yet, the label says just TYPE 4338, some S/N and P/N 75Y57298. Notebook is a T430-2349GZG with up-to-date BIOS 2.57 greetings,Raphael

Purchased this HP Envy Touchsmart 17 notebook PC with Windows 8.1 and want to, sort of, dock it.   I want to use a wireless keyboard & mouse, use a large external HDMI monitor (only one, not dual) and external PC speakers.    However, when I close the lid on the Envy, everything shuts down. How do I set up the Envy and/or Win 8.1 to allow me to use the external monitor, mouse and keyboard when the Envy lid is shut?

Costco currently has a Swift 3 for sale, but they don't list mfr part #s, though I'm not sure if it matters. Anyway, I found an old thread here that indicated this dock would work with the Swift 3, but it only lists the Switch series as compatible. So, will it work with the Swift, will it charge it via USB PD, and how is the video support? Is it using a DisplayLink chipset? Or is it perhaps using "DisplayPort Alternate Mode", which I'm not sure the Swift 3 supports. If it's using DisplayLInk, is it going to take advantage of the full bandwidth of USB 3.1? Or is it going to be limited to the same performance I'd get with a generic USB 3.0 port replicator for half the price?

I purchased the HP Envy x360 13-y013cl and the HP Elite USB-C Dock. I couldn't find any specific information on compatibility from either product and the exact laptop doesn't seem to be listed on HP's site.  However, other Envy models recommend this dock as the correct one (and only recommended option under accessories).   When I plug in the dock and plug the USB-C cable into the computer, nothing happens.  The computer isn't able to see it, the firmware update utility doesn't see it, the computer doesn't charge, and nothing related to the dock works.   Did I get a defective dock or a computer with a bad USB-C port?  Is it completely incompatible?  Am I doing something wrong that's not obvious? I don't currently have any other USB-C devices to rule out the possiblity of a the computer having a bad port, nor do I have another USB-C computer to try the dock with.   If the dock is not compatible, are there any other options for a compatible USB-C dock that will charge the laptop?

Hi all, In getting help regarding another matter, I have come across a question.  There are 5 USB 2.0 ports on my Thinkpad Advanced Dock.  Are they "native" or do they act as a "hub"? And if someone could clarify the difference, too, please.  My understanding is that "native" ports out a full 480Mbps each while "hubbed" ports share that 480...  Is that it? Thanks! Chris

Hi,I'm looking for a dock for Yoga 900, which will be able to output full 4k. It's kinda disappointing Lenovo decided for USB-C without providing peripherials too. Also, I already know we won't be able to charge Yoga 900 through USB-C, thus it will always require power cable to be connected too. Kinda half-baked, if you ask me. Anyway, if anyone would know about (available, there's tons of soon-to-come) a dock, or at least an adapter, I'd appreciate the info, I didn't find any around the globe. I hope I just missed it.:-/

Answer:USB-C -> DP [email protected] dock (or at least an adapter)

My understanding is you can get a direct USB -> DP adapter with 1.2 support, which should give you 4K @ 60fps.

I haven't seen any Lenovo versions on the market, but Google has one listed:

Just faced a rather strange issue, but not really an issue, just different system behaviour than expected. System:W520 Batteries:55++ connected27++ connected Power adapter:Unplugged No other accessories connected. Scenario:I was using the system till it power itself off due to low power (0% reached for both batteries). i.e. Ungraceful Windows shutdown. Then upon pressing the power on button, the LEDs flashes, no THINKPAD logo or BIOS message appears, system appears to then restart again, and the LEDs flash again...and loops until it was no longer able to even attempt to POST. Expected behaviour:Either display the message that says "Battery level is too low".OrDon't loop (this is the behaviour when only the 55++ battery is connected at 0%) Why does having the 27++ would make the system go through this looping cycle?

Answer:W520, 55++, 27++, unplugged from power adapter, 0% battery. Press Power button --> power up loops.

Hello Chatbox,

I can understand your issue very well, as there is no message comes on the screen which gives you information to plug the power adapter and prevent the laptop to get shut down.

You should install Power Manager software and then customize it as per your requirement.
The software can be download from the mentioned below web link.
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8mu417ww.exe

Hope, after this laptop will not shut down automatically due to battery backup

Hi!My Fujitsu Siemens Scaleoview T19-1's power adapter does not work properly (the screen stays black, the light next to the ON button flickers etc.). There are some ways to make it work, but these sollutions are not so safe, so I decided to get a new one.It would be really hard to get an exact same one, since it's an old model, but I wondered if it could be replaced with a universal notebook power adapter? For example the TRUST 16665 65W seems suitable. What do you think?Additional question: I have heard that that if you plug out and in these adapters every day it's reduces their lifetime. It does not seem very logical, but I wonder what the experts think, since I can not think of any other reason why could it broke.

Hi all. Fist of all, my problem is not identical to the popular one, where it displays "plugged in, not charging". My 2 weeks T430 stopped charging on adapter, it won't recognize the adapter was plugged in at all.It WAS charging when on the dock (mini dock series 3 with usb3, model 4337-15g). I returned the laptop for service/replacement and now when I got the new one, I am wondering is it possible that the dock actually caused the power port on the laptop to burn out? I am looking for an advice should I also send the dock for a service inspection (returns are not very well organized in my country).   Should I continue to use the dock with the replacement laptop I got? What do you think? Thank you.

Answer:T430 not charging on adapter, does charge on the dock.

Hi there neighbour, welcome to the forum!

From what I know, there is no physical connection of the dock and the power port of the T430. When docked, the laptop is powered via the docking port. So it seems a little far fetched that the dock burned the power port of the laptop.

That being said, it would be good if you could arrange for checking both laptop and dock. But if it isn't easy, I would trust  the dock to be allright.

If i understand correctly, the laptop is charging from its own charger now, but you have not connected it to the dock yet?

Hello everyone,
I was inspired to write this post because I see a lot of confusion about USB-C and Thunderbolt in general, in particular about limitations, such as “Why can I get 4K @ 60 Hz out of a USB-C to HDMI/DP adapter but not out of a USB-C dock that has those same outputs?”, so I figured I’d explain how USB-C and Thunderbolt work in the hopes that it would help make sense of it all.
The USB-C connector is a very interesting and capable design. The focus for our purposes here is that it has 4 pairs of pins that can be used for various types of traffic in various combinations. I’m going to call each of these 4 pairs a “lane” from here on. And since one of the possible uses for these lanes is DisplayPort traffic, another key bit of information to clarify upfront is that DisplayPort is also divided into lanes; it has been from the beginning. A full-bandwidth DisplayPort connection has always been defined as 4 lanes (all carried on a single cable), so when people refer to DisplayPort 1.2 being capable of 4K @ 60 Hz, for example, what they technically mean is 4 lanes of DP 1.2 being capable of that type of output. So, each of these multi-purpose “lanes” in a USB-C connector is capable of carrying any of these types of traffic: - USB 3.1 Gen 2 transmit (abbreviated Tx from here on) - USB 3.1 Gen 2 receive (abbreviated Rx from here on) - DisplayPort 1.2 lane (if wired to the GPU – and again, each lane is 25% of a full-band... So thinking I might have a power issue somehow here. My otherwise well behaved W520 (4276-37u, i7 @ 2.2ghz, 8GB RAM, Windows 7 Pro) has developed an occasional sudden restart issue. Not preceeded by any warning, no BSOD, nothing in the Event Viewer in any categories at the time of the restart. All drivers, OS updates have been applied and since there's nothing in the Event Viewer after restart I don't think it's a software problem. It only happens when I'm plugged into A/C power using the Lenovo adapter, it has *NOT* ever happened when I am connected to my docking station. It *seems* to happen less frequently when I run off the A/C adapter and don't have the battery installed, but I have had it happen once when the battery wasn't installed either. Could this be a failing power adapter? Loosening power connection where adapter plugs in to back of laptop? Anything user testable / fixable here? Thanks in advance. -- Bass

Answer:W520 random restarts, no BSOD, adapter only (not on dock)

One other thing I forgot to mention, I have installed a CPU temperature app and it never shows the temperature going too high. In fact I've had this happen when just waking the machine up from being suspended, so there's no way it's overheating. All the Lenovo hardware tests are all normal with exception of the advanced GPU stress test which always seems to think the GPU can't take the heat to run the final stress test. -- Bass

You can use MSconfig to diagnose startup issues. Visit the following link for details;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iku_aPUsVQ4

You can post back with any questions regarding your system services and startup entries to establish their purpose and whether or not they are required at startup.

Taskbar icons are just shortcuts and do not effect the time it takes for starting a computer.

It is the the following form xxxxx#xxx.  x= an alphanumeric character. Once you provide that product number I will be able to get you abn HP part number for the power button. Sorry to hear that your notebook isn't useable for now.

Answer:Helix battery charging/keyboard dock/ac adapter problems

When you say the keyboard is not charging, yoiu mean the charging meter shows plugged in, not charging with some battery percentage displayed, or nothing was showing there. When you plug the AC power, you should see fast three flushes of the red light indicator in both keyboard and tablet. If you disconnect the tablet and plug the AC into the keyboard, you should also see three flushes of the red light. If this occurs, that means your keyboard can recongnize the AC adaptor. My helix also has a problem of showing correct battery level when charging or on battery, but if I disconnect the tablet and reconnect it, the keyboard battery level will be correctly shown. I think there is a problem with the lenovo power management dealing with two batteroes. If this is not the case, you may try to uninstall the AC adaptor drive from Device Manager and reboot with AC plugged in. Holp this helps.

No, you only need to plug the dock in. When I remove the AC adaptor from my dock, the dock stops working completely -- display port shuts down and the green light next to the dock's power button turns off. Do you have a 90 watt adaptor plugged into the dock? It sounds like you have a bad dock or docking connector.

I've seen these as a single DSL plug that plugs into a USB port or as a hub with 2 or 3 USB ports + DSL plug that plug into the USB port. I have not yet turned the computer on, because I may return it if DSL access is going to be a problem.

Like the title says, my external microphone doesn't work through the dock's microphone jack, a usb microphone jack, or the laptop's headphone jack. It recognizes the microphone and I can even set it as the default device in the sound settings, but I still can't get it to pick up any sound. Any ideas, thanks.

Answer:T430 external microphone won't work via headphone jack, usb adapter, or through dock

Take it in for checking. I suspect that the soundcards we're being given with this product are very low quality (based on many issues stemming around low or no audio sound).

Hi everybody, Here is my ocnfiguration :IBM T60p 2007 83J with latest bios updateLenovo advanced mini dock (42W4630)Thinkpad Serial/Parallel Port Bay Adapter (40Y8124) The problem is : at startup, after the Thinkpad logo, the computer makes 2 beeps and there is an error printed on the screen :"ERROR0619 : Parallel port configuration changed Press <ESC> to continue" The parallel port of the dock is enabled in the bios. I think there is a problem in the computer bios... maybe lenovo didn't test this specific configuration. Regards,

Answer:Error at startup with T60p, advanced mini dock and Parallel port bay adapter

Does the system boot in the dock when the serial/paralell adapter isn't inserted in the bay? I'll bet the answer is yes. The bay adapter is probably using the same resources as the dock's parallel port in bios - a conflict.

Hello,  For the past couple months now, my wireless adapter keeps disabling itself and will not let me enable it. This happens at random moments throughout the day or when I change where I am sitting with my laptop ( ex. bedroom to livingroom). I tried to go into device manager and unclick the option that allows it to disable itself, but it keeps doing it. It will either: drop my wifi connection,  show I'm connected but no internet it available, or just say it cannot find any connections what so ever. I find this weird because my phone can pick up my wifi without any issues. Any help is appreciated.

Hello,  Some time ago I bought the HP Envy 13-d170nd. In the mean time I lost my adapter for this notebook. I have been looking for a new one online, but I can't find the same one as I first got with my notebook.  My question is: is it safe to buy another type of adapter? I heard it might destroy the accu of the laptop. I'd really love to know which adapter I could use or where I can buy the old one I had.  Thank you,  Stefany

Answer:Finding adapter for HP Envy 13-d170nd

Hi Stefany,You can use compatible adapter or even universal adapter and they will work well. Get at least 65W model for HP envy 13.Example:https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=HP+Envy+13++ac+adapt... You can also buy from HP which will be high quality and mor expensive. You can choose one of the ones for hp envy 14 on this page:http://store.hp.com/us/en/cv/batteryfinder Hope it helps,David

When plugging in the power adapter, the "charge" light does not come on, nor will the notebook power up. To rule out the HP power adapter I plugged in a Targus universal adapter (with correct polarity) and same result. Same results whether the battery is installed or not. The notebook had been in storage for several months, therefore, no recent changes. Any ideas?

Today I brought my computer out of sleep mode by opening the cover, which is what I do every morning and I noticed that the wireless indicator light on the F12 key was red/orange, which means it is not functioning.  This has happened several times before and rebooting the PC always resets it.  This time however, it did not reset.  And when I clicked on the diagnosis link, it said the problem was that I didn't have an ethernet cable plugged into my computer.  The existence of my Internal WiFi connector was gone.  I plugged in and configured a USB WiFi adapter (Netgear N600) and it worked fine.  But I would rather have the internal WiFi adaptor that was installed on my PC working again.  Thanks for any direction and help anyone can give me.

Hi, I had an HP Pavillion for a number of years and last week I found myself unable to connect to the network.  This was the first in a long line of events that ended up with the computer completely dying and me having to buy a new one. I now have a brand new HP Envy notebook and EXACTLY the same is happening.  I've been through all the recommended steps on the self help guide on here, made sure all the wireless drivers are up to date, and the troubleshooter is coming up with the following: Problem with wireless adapter or access pointA cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken. Thankfully I'm able to connect via an ethernet lead but this is obviously not a fix.  Why would this happen on a brand new computer and be an identical issue to what I had on my old computer? (the wifi and router are working fine in general, other devices connect with no problems). Please can someone help me, I have a lot of work to do this weekend and the helpline isn't open until Monday. (Please bear in mind that whilst I'm confident in using a computer, I'm not at all confident in doing back end stuff and working with registry keys or anything like that). I'd appreciate some guidance,Thank you, Caroline

In the last few days I will have my laptop on with it plugged into the AC Adapter which is going straight to a wall outlet, after a couple of hours, my laptop turns off.  On closer inspection, I realsie that the battery is not charging.  I have to shut down my laptop and let if charge for a few hours, and then work on it.  But it won't charge while I am working with it plugged into the outlet.  I have read up about Windows 10 being a possibility of be the cause, so I do a battery uninstall, and rebooted the laptop, but that doesn't seem to have changed anything.  What I am missing here? Thanks in Advance

I got an HP Envy x360 (model: http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/Laptops/hp-envy-x360-convertible-laptop--15t-touch-iris-gfx-w0z96av-1) a few weeks ago and I bought the HP USB-C to VGA Adapter (http://store.hp.com/NetherlandsStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=N9K76AA&opt=AC3&sel=ACC) to connect the laptop to an old VGA display. When I connect the adapter to the laptop, I first get an error that the USB device is not recognized:  This issue resolves itself fairly quickly, however, but after that every few seconds the following error pops up:  Trying the laptop and adapter combination with another display and VGA cable results in the same behavior. However, the adapter works with both displays when connected to my Lumia 950 phone. The second error also talks about a "DisplayPort connection", but the adapter is for connecting via VGA... Has anyone some ideas for solving this problem?
