I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yesterday I tried to start my computer like I do any other day, but today when I started it, I couldn't open start (nor use windows key to do so) search bar didn't work only some of the icons worked. There is also some blank spaces where it seems there used to be icons oh and did I mention that the whole taskbar freezes after 5 minutes. Task manager doesn't work if I right-click on the desktop and press Personalize/Display settings they give me an error message (ms-settings:personalization_background

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.
Same thing for Display settings except for the title which is: ms-settings:display). Settings refuses to open, but task manager just give me the Not responding message for all eternity. If somebody knows what to do help will be greatly appreciated! :)

Hello EightForums administrators and other members

Today, I installed Linux Mint 13 to try some appliactions, programs and other good things.
I downloaded it normally , followed guide from this forum and after installing it I don't have network connection.

I tried with all type of network switches and activated Legacy Network Adapter but it don't work (I configured in network adapter for ex. External Network 1 , I want to say it's not say : Not Connected in VM Settings).

When I turn it Linux Mint says : Disconnected - you are now offline.

How to configure network and the Internet to work with Linux Mint VM ?

Thanks in advance and please answer soon.

I'm new to Hyper-V myself but I think there are 2 guides you should follow:
linux:
Hyper-V ? Create Linux Virtual Machine in Windows 8

How to use (vista example):
Hyper-V - How to Use in Windows 8

And there is someone that manages to add network to Vista so maybe you can apply that to LMDE.

Good luck

If I change my operating system to linux and delete my old operating system entirely, will I be able to still use system restore to change my old operating system back?
Please help. All help is appreciated.

Answer:If I change my operating system to linux, can I still use windows' system restore?

The simple answer is no. If you remove an OS then you can not use it to do a restore because it is no longer there to run the restore program. What I would recommend would be to have a duel boot system.

I have Red Hat Linux 8.0 running on a Gateway computer, and the Xwindows system is all messed up. The graphics are glitchy, and the windows are huge. If anyone knows how to fix this problem, please post here. This is really bugging me! Thanks

Answer:Linux doesn't work properly on Gateways...

it's not that it's a gateway, its that you ma not have the proper drivers installed. If you have a P3 system then it's probably an Intel 810 onboard graphics.

What you really need to do is post what the system specs are, as "Gateway" is not good enough. Even if you can post the Gateway model number then we can lok them up for you.

I have been offered a trial download/install of this OS but do not know anything about it.I would welcome comments from users as to whether it is a better alternative to Windos 7 which I have only purchased recently.Apparently it is possible to run it side by side with Win7.

Answer:LINUX Operating System

There are dozens of Linux systems, you will have to tell us what the one you have is?
Most Linux systems will let you run them from the CD without having to install it on the hard drive so you can see if you like it or not and to make sure its going to be compatible with your hardware.
Its not an alternative to the Microsoft Windows system, it is a completely different system under the bonnet. On the surface they look the same, my son, who is a Windows user, comes home and he is completely at home using my Linux Ubuntu system.
You can run it with Windows, when you boot you will have the option of selecting which system you want to use, in fact on this new computer I'm not going to install Windows because I have found I was never using it, so I couldn't see the point on spending out on something that I never use.

I have some old laptops i would like to get some sort of use of provided its worth even using them.

One of them has a intel celeron 700 mhz processor and 256 mb of ram
Another has Intel pentium 3 1,133 mhz processor and 512 mb of ram

What linux distros would some of you recommend?

The one with slower processor and memory i assume even with a linux distro that can run stable on it won't get very good flash videos.

Answer:Operating system ( linux) for old laptops?

Those specs are very limiting, as your processors are quite slow, and your RAM is minimal. What was on them to begin with? WinXP, or something even earlier?

I posted a thread somewhere on this forum about a lightweight replacement that I custom remixed from Lubuntu, called XPubuntu. Although to be honest, even that might be too much for your old anemic lappys?

If XPubuntu isn't for your machines, the lightest weight distro that I have ever used (with a graphical GUI environment and full set of user programs) was AntiX. You may want to also check out Puppy Linux, although I have no experience with that one.

Stay away from the more well known Gnome, KDE, & Unity desktop environments. Usually I would tell folks to look for XFCE, LXDE & Enlightenment desktop distros. In your case, even those MAY be too much. You should probably be looking at Openbox, Blackbox, Fluxbox, IceWM, JWM or WindowMaker desktop environments. Less eye candy equals lower resource draw. It might be a challenge to find the right mix of "least amount of desktop environment resource draw" versus "graphical aesthetics to feel comfortable enough to get things done."

Depending on your level of computer expertise and comfort level, you may also want to consider installing a "server distro" (no graphical environment), then installing a lightweight window manager of your choice. For instance, Debian server is considered a very solid, stable, and popular... Read more

Unfortunately i accidentally downloaded it onto my c drive and now i have two os on my desktop. Can someone please help me delete that from my desktop, and also can someone help me install it onto my external? Thanks

Answer:second operating system (linux xubuntu)

http://partedmagic.com/

Personally I would use Parted Magic to format your external drive first(or any other partition program).

Make at least three partitons

1) 10 to 15 Gb

2) as much space as you like ( depends on the size of your drive)

3) 512 MB to 2 GB

Partition 1) will be for the ROOT ( / ) partition. Thats where your main linux os files will be.

Partition 2) will be for the HOME (/home) partition this is where all you personal files and folders will be. Remember most modern linux os's have the ability to read and write to windiows partitions so make thios a size to suit your needs. I ususally make mine about 50 Gb.

Partition 3) is for the SWAP partition. Usually twice the size of the ram you have installed up to a max of 2GB. There is a bit of confusion about swap so further reading may give you more info.

Put your GRUB into partition 1).

Thats it really with your drives connected to the pc you should be able to install from your linux CD/DVD.
As to getting rid of your botched install I can not help. May be a good idea to do fresh installs all round.

Are there any other operating systems besides windows or Linux? What about the macos? Can it be installed on a pc? What do I need to buy to get macos x work on my pc? Any other OS out there?

Answer:A Operating system besides Windows or Linux??

You cannot legally install Mac OS X on any non-Mac hardware. There are a wide variety of other operating systems out there such as the BSD family (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, etc.), Haiku (which is a derivative of the BeOS model as I understand it), and several others with niche userbases.

There are lot of Portable Linux Operating Systems. Its difficult to choose one. I just want to know what linux distro do you prefer...
My requirements are...
*Should be preloaded with VLC, Firefox/Chromium, LibreOffice and some basic apps.
*Should have easy GUI.
*Should boot in few seconds even with old pentium 3 hardware.
*Should be lightweight (less size)
*Should be error free (less crashes, hangups)
*Should not be a battery sucker(low power consumption)...
*Should support newer wireless (Intel, Atheros & Ralink) hardwares.
I am going to use it in a CD/DVD.

Suggest your preferance to me...

Answer:Which Linux distro will you use for a Portable Operating System?

Try one of these. Mint Mate is the more advanced system.

Portable OS - Carry your OS on an External Drive

Emergency Kit - save your files from a dead OS

PS: CD/DVD is not a good idea.

My ThinkPad A21m (2628-F2U, PIII 750 MHz (256KB), 512 MB RAM) works very efficiently with Windows 2000 SP4 and seems to work better on the internet with dial-up, than my higher-powered, 2GB RAM Windows XP computers). Unfortunately, it is now difficult to get anti-virus and firewall software that are compatible with Windows 2000. (I suspect - but haven't had the chance to fully investigate it yet - that my A21m would not meet the hardware specifications for the current versions of anti-virus and firewall software anyway. I was wondering whether switching to Linux, Ubuntu, or some other operating system would help or would only add to my woes. If I switched to Linux, for example, would the Thinkpad drivers and software work with the new operating system? Would most other programs, such as Outlook Express, Microsoft Office, and so on, work with the new operating system? If anyone has had experience with the problem of Windows 2000 no longer being supported by anti-virus and firewall providers, I would appreciate your suggestions and comments. Thank you.

I had the same problem with my A21m (2628 - GXU PIII 800 MHz) a few years ago, so I upgraded it to Windows XP Professional (SP3). My machine is also fully loaded with 512 MB of RAM,  I then installed Norton as the anti-virus/firewall software. I have to admit that the machine is rather sluggish though. I tend not to use it in favour of my 3GB R500.

Samsung 950 pro will not work if you got x1 Carbon 1 gen to 3rd gen since 950 drive uses NVMe technology and PCie 3.0 which the laptops do not have gen 3 has got PCIe 2.0 and no NVMe support so answer would be no if you got one of these generations.

1. KTT500/128 (128MB)
2. PA2042U (128MB)
3. PA2040U (32MB)

PA2040U works without problems. memtest86 without errors after 5 hours. KTT500/128 and PA2042U give me many errors everytime in test 5 [Block move, 64 moves]. The System boots with these memorys and recognice them without error, but windows 98se runs unstable (errors; recistry errors; protection fault a.s.o.) Anybody who can help me ?

Answer:460CDT: memory upgrade won't work properly

Hi Leo

As far as I know the memtest is very good and it works with very good precision. If there is some error message in 99% cases the RAM module is defective. Please contact your local dealer and take a new one.

Don?t forget that your unit can handle just with 160 MB RAM. If you want you can also try to make BIOS update.

Good luck!

I am running an old computer with ME. I am going to get XP. However there appears to be an upgrade version of XP and the whole XP operating system. I assume that the upgrade option will be easier to install. Which is the best and easiest option?.Any comments gratefully received

Answer:How to upgrade from ME operating system to XP

If you want to keep all your old programs and settings, go for the upgrade. If you want to start afresh with a clean installation of XP, nothing saved, go for an oem or retail copy of XP. You can always burn your old data to cd\dvd.Make sure your ME computer has enough grunt to run XP. A 1ghz cpu and 512Mb of ram is a good starting point.

This post is related to the laptop detailed above.

This is a new laptop, as yet unused, still in its original packaging. The laptop has installed Windows 8, which I would like to upgrade to Windows 10. This should be easy enough, as I've already performed the upgrade to Windows 10 on my desktop computer without any problem. However, before doing anything to this new machine, I'd also like to add a second operating system, Windows 7, to the same hard drive, and would be very grateful if anyone reading this post could explain, in very simple terms, how I would go about doing this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to choose which operating system to use each time I start the laptop. Please include as much detail in your reply, with step by step guide. All constructive responses welcome. Many thanks.

I have a brand new X1 Carbon (Generation 1 3444-CYU), and I also have the docking station.  My intention is to be able to have the laptop cover closed, and to use the power switch on the top of the docking station to start (apply power to) the laptop, and to have the output be driven to two DVI monitors. At this point, I'm able to have the laptp drive the main screen (part of the laptop) and the two external monitors, but I cannot seem to figure out how to use the docking station to "start/boot" the PC, and to have the bootup sequence, and other subsequent display presented on the two DVI screens only.As I've been looking through the knowledge base, I'm surprised that there are not simply a series of articles that describe the various options for configuring monitors, so I'm forced to post this request.  Can someone help?thanks

Answer:How to configure 2 external monitors with X1 Carbon

I see this is an old post, but I figured I'd respond in case someone else is having the same problem. There is a setting in the BIOS where you can have the X1 power on automatically when you plug it into the dock. I believe the setting is called something to the affect of "Power On When Connected to A/C." This solves the problem you and describing and I have been using with successfully with a dual monitor set up.

First of all I would like to take a second to apologize for probably creating yet another topic considering the same matter. However I really do suck when it comes to any technological matters so I was simply unable to find/search efficiently for a solution.
Namely:
My operating system (which is Windows 7) has been gradually decreasing it's efficiency over these last months.
It's come to this moment where 90% of programs don't work properly without me knowing what's going on.
System itself started to create folders like "asdjbi82egbjqhvsd1v18127teyashbd" (randomized letters and numbers with no sense whatsoever), that despite the fact I've got administrator privileges, forbids me from taking any action.
I can't do much right now. Games don't work (I can install something, but every time I open a patch or the game itself it crashes into "program has stopped working". I've got a thing called a back-up recovery system, but even though I do it, nothing really changes. The entire memory is being literally cleansed and yet after I install anything it happens once again from the very start.

Is there anything I can do or am I being forced to contact professional technicians and pay tons of money (which I don't really have) to try and save it.

I thank every single one of you from the pretty much bottom of my heart for taking your life-time to read this out and maybe help me find a solution.

Best regards,
Bart McAllister.

I bought my daughter an Acer Aspire One D257 - despite the fact that it came with Windows 7, but only 1GB of RAM. I really wanted an XP machine, but it seems they no longer do them. I know that W7 Starter was supposed to be much more able to run in 1GB than full-up W7 - but I was still nervous.
Well, inevitably, the netbook hangs periodically - just becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. Given that it's pretty new, the only cause seems to me to be W7 thrashing around in too little memory.
So, what to do? I could upgrade the RAM to 2GB. It'll support that, and I've found a video of a guy doing it on YouTube. It doesn't look too painful - but I'm very nervous about pulling small PCs apart and putting them back together.
Alternatively, I could downgrade the netbook to XP. I'm well versed in installing XP - but the problem that occurs to me is the driver problem: if XP isn't supported on the machine, will I be able to identify and downlolad all the XP drivers I'll need? I've found a couple of very helpful sites, and I think it's do-able - although the sites refer to the slightly earlier model in the Acer Aspire range.
But before I take the plunge, I thought I'd ask the wizards of the forum what they'd do - or, in fact, if any of them has come across this problem before, and how they fixed it?
Anyone?
PS: a third option I'm thinking about is to dual boot the machine, which is easier to do when W7 is already installed than when XP is already installed. That way, unless I inadverte... Read more

Please Wait" After a few mins of that it just restarted and nothing was changed. Is the disc broken or is there something else wrong?

Answer:Operating system disc doesnt work

You tried only once?

System manufacturer and model?

Hello,

A friend of my daughters has a packard bell pc (4 years old). After ridding various virus from the machine and coming to a full stop they decided to use the restore disc (red floppy) and restore to factory default - all appeared to be going well. Machine froze after telling them to remove the floppy, when it came back to life it requested master cd1, which they dont have and dont remember ever having (bearing in mind machine is 4 years old).

What do you think the best track would be to contact packard bell for master disc. I wondered whether my copy of xp home would work with their pc and their code - afterall they have purchased the machine etc. or am I being totally blonde. I am quite happy to reformat for them if this is a possibility but dont want to attempt it if there is the possibility it wont work. I realised xp is one machine one copy but not sure whether this is reliant on code or not.

Advice, please.

Answer:Solved: my operating system, their pc, their code - will it work

I just received my new S10e with Linux OS. I tried to install a SATA Harddisk and wanted to install Windows XP. Both harddisks , the preinstalled SSD (4 GB) and the new SATA disk are shown as Harddrive 0, ID 0 and BUS 0. installation of OS fails as both drives are accessed identically. Is there a way to switch off the SSD or change the harddrive, ID, or Bus no? I've found no option within the BIOS. Thanks svfa

Hi All,  I have an X1 Carbon Gen2 which came with Dragon Assistant originally. But I lost it once upgraded to Windows 10. The response I got from Nuance when I called them was that Dragon Assistant is designed for Windows 8 and is not supported by Windows 10. So I was just wondering if there is a way to configure Cortana instead of Dragon Assistant to the same button on the adaptive keyboard. Have anyone tried this ? Please let me know.

Hello, I'm looking for some advice please as my computer is broke and I'm stuck without it.
Last weekend it just stopped working, I used it in the morning with no problems then in the afternoon I turned it on and it wouldn't start up, long story short is I ended calling Dell and they have told me that my computer has automatically upgraded to Windows 10 but my Dell XPS 7100 isn't compatible with it, now I have no operating system at all!
I paid them £119 for a years support and another £30 for a Windows 7 ultimate disc which they say I'll receive tomorrow (Friday)
I use my computer for work as I'm self employed and need to prepare quotes and invoices etc for my customers, I've been all week without it now and am fuming that this has happened, I didn't even want Windows 10, why would it upgrade automatically? It's cost me a lot of time and has now cost me money and I don't even know if all my files will be there when it's working again.
Just thought to vent on here and see if anyone has any advice, I'm also not happy that I've had to pay for Windows 7 ultimate again as I already bought it once with my computer but it seems it was preloaded so I didn't get a disc which I now need to reinstall, Dell support said they will assist with the reinstall and then block Windows 10 from trying to do this again! Great now I feel under attack from the Windows 10 upgrade :-/

Answer:Windows 10 upgrade has deleted my operating system

Run your W7 disc and you will probably loose everything on your computer. I would wait and see what information that you get on here first.
In the meantime does your computer try to start or is it just dead.

Helping a friend on his Acer Aspire V5 laptop that was running an OEM Windows 8 to upgrade to 8.1.

After selecting the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 via the store, the system went through it's install procedure, however after it does an auto reboot, it gives you a blank screen with the message No Operating System found, in the upper left corner.

But, you can turn the machine off and back on, and it will boot just fine. However if you select restart it does the same thing "no operating system found", on restart and again you must power down and power back on.

I have searched for fixes, but all seem to point to some sort of re-install process. I am not to crazy about the idea of re-installing to factory settings or doing a repair back to Windows 8 and attempting to upgrade again, are their any known shorter fixes for this?

And if I do go back to Windows 8, and try to upgrade again, what is to say it won't happen again?

Answer:No Operating System found after Windows 8.1 upgrade

I recently upgraded my system's graphics card and processor to an FX 6300 with an R7 250X. I had some issues with my old OS, so I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro.

After these upgrades, I'm now getting various different BSOD's (Blue screen of death) upon boot and while using the machine. For example, NTFS_FileSystem_Error, Kernel_security_check_failure and several more which I cannot remember off the top of my head.

In addition to that, I get error messages on start-up for various different programs, sometimes Google Chrome fails to launch, and I'm unable to use any of the Windows Metro apps - they simply launch and then crash.
Iv'e got all the latest drivers, I've ran an HHD check within windows, and a RAM test using memtest86 and nothing abnormal was found. I can play games when I'm not getting BSOD's at solid FPS, which shows me that all of my new hardware is not at fault.
It's getting to the stage where I'm considering downgrading to Windows 7 again.

I'd appreciate any help that I can get on this. Thanks in advance. I can post anything else that would help you guys out with troubleshooting.

What make and model of CPU do you have?
If the the CPU supports EM64T or AMD64 features then it can run 64 bit Windows. Tools such as CPU-Z or SiSoft Sandra can check your CPU for you.

If you just reinstalled Windows without formatting, your programs may still be there under the Program Files directory. If you formatted (erased) before reinstalling, your programs are gone Did they give you an Applications disc with your computer?

I upgraded my system from a 1.8GHz,3gig ram to I5 with 8gig ram, reloaded windows 7 and the damn thing's physical memory goes 80%+ and sometimes BSOD, any help to solve the problem?

Answer:BSOD after hardware upgrade and operating system reload

When you say to reloaded Windows 7, does that mean you re-booted Windows or re-installed Windows. If you reinstalled Windows 7 it was completely unnecessary for a RAM upgrade, Windows would have picked up the extra RAM without any intervention from you.The first thing to do is check them memory is properly seated and is compatible with you motherboard. Then run a memory check.http://www.memtest86.com/Stuart

I hope this will help all the other user out there struggling to get their M.2 ssd to work with their HP Envy 17 laptops. I will give a step by step instructions on how to install and how allow the bios to recognize the m.2 ssd in slot 0, and how to install or run windows 10 off your m.2 ssd. 1. Download the latest updates from HP Envy from HP - I used Internet Download manager to download all the updates as of June 15, 2016. (Bios, drivers, software) http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers 2. Install your M.2 ssd Boot into Windows - Right click on My Computer on your desktop and select Disk Management, and  Format Disk 0 If you want to do a clean install and you did not update your HP ENVY with the latest software and drivers this is the screen you will see when you try to intall Windows 10 on your m.2 ssd. The bios will not see the m.2 and will not allow you to select it in BOOT options.  Instead of doing a clean install, I highly recommend using the Samsung migrations software, it will clone your DISK 1 (2tb hard drive) to Disk 0 (m.2 ssd). After successfully migrating your Drive C to your M.2, when you reboot your m.2 ssd should kick in. Right click on My Computer on your desktop and select Disk Management, you will notice now that Drive 1 is offline, it will conflict with your m.2 ssd drive, don't worry, you can right click on disk one and select go online, you can then start to delete main partition, I have not yet figu... Question: linux X configure

hey, all.

before i ask this question, i'd like to thank all of you in this community for answering my questions. it is helpful, especially when the HOWTOS don't work for me or i screwed something up.

it's also fun to read posts and replies and learn, and to answer other people's questions.

okay... group hug

..now that we have that out of the way.

i am beginning to use linux on a more regular basis, now. i found versions of my chat clients and such. and you'll be proud to know that i am in CLI more often than X ...well... that is until my chat clients worked. now i am constantly in X, only i use CLI to get around and do stuff.

2 questions that i haven't found an answer for because i either don't know the terminology of what i am trying to do, or it just isn't out there in my sight on the net.

1)how do i set X up so that everything is displayed sharply and such? right now, my X display looks like windows loaded in safe mode with no video driver...lol... no it isn't that bad, but it's not so great. maybe the video driver is configured incorrectly?

2)i downloaded netscape, and will probably download mozilla as well to replace netscape. anyway, netscape installed fine and runs well.... but i have to launch it from CLI. i don't feel like navigating through CLI to get on the web when i know i could just place an icon or something on the desktop or in the "Start" menu. how do i do this?

Answer:linux X configure

1) Either means you have a font problem or you're running at a too low resolution. Try pressing CTRL+ALT+NUM_PLUS/NUM_MINUS to change the resolution and/or check your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. As for fonts, well there's many How-To's on that, too.

2) Depends on what window-manager/desktop you're running. Just Icewm.. well, I guess there's a menu-file you can edit. 'man icewm'?

3) You'd have to add the path to the binary to your PATH environment-variable, or create a link from a pathed directory to the binary.

In attempting update the BIOS of my U300-153, which is described as OS independent on the download page, I find that the provided upgrade file in
http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/bios-20090304140640.ZIP
does not include files to make a bootable CD, as described in the instructions at
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=B IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07
where Option 2 Step 2 lists the files which are in the zip, and these are required to make a boot cd. The files listed are not in the zip.

This forces me to use Windows. My Windows is broken and I daren't repair it, since Windows repairs destroy data (stated clearly on the recovery CD packaging) and Linux co-installations. My Linux is working fine, and I don't want the Windows anymore.

How then can I upgrade the BIOS? Either:
1. Use a true OS independent package (ie the promised bootable CD approach). I don't find such a thing here.
2. Reinstall Windows, thereby trashing the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Sincerely,
Aleksander K

Answer:Satellite U300 - How to upgrade the BIOS on a Linux system?

This is not possible since the BIOS on the Toshiba page is a win-based BIOS version and if you want to update the BIOS then you have to install the Windows OS and then you could execute the exe file?

I'm new here so pardon if there is any mistakes.

Anyhow I am currently using windows 7 (not a fan of windows 8). Since windows 10 is released I wanted to install and try it.
Initially I installed windows 8.1 in my D:\ drive (works normally as far as I can tell), and upgrade it to windows 10. I am keeping my windows 7 in drive C: as I do not have any other working computer if the installation failed.

So halfway upgrading from windows 8.1 to windows 10, the upgrade failed and a restart is needed. When restarting I tried to reset the installation but even that is failed. When restarted again there is no operating system in that drive (drive D: ) ??

Currently I tried to reformat my drive D: (windows 10) with my current windows 7 (installed in drive C) but it says the volume is in use by another process but it refused.
Summary
Drive C: - windows 7, still functioning properly
Drive D - where windows 8.1 is located and upgraded to windows 10 but failed, currently cannot detect any os when i boot from drive D: , and cant format the drive.

I know its really stupid and complicated the way i installed my windows 8.1 with my windows 7 intact, but I'm worried if the installation failed, I have no backup computer to fall back. Is there any suggestions that I can do?

Answer:Windows 10 crashed during Upgrade. Unable to detect operating system.

Try booting Windows 7 to Safe Mode (F8) then see if you can format D: from there. Do a quick format, full format is not needed.

Hiya,

Firstly I should say that I am primarily a mac user, and it is not my laptop I am posting about. Although I am reasonably knowledgable about Windows, I haven't used it since XP, about four years ago, and so am pretty rusty.

Basically, my girlfriends computer randomly turned off about a week ago, she assumed it was a dead battery, plugged it in, and then when it turned back on it wouldn't boot displaying error message: missing operating system.

As it is a Dell laptop it didn't come with any installation discs, and I totally forgot to even make a repair disc when we got the laptop. I managed to get hold of a Windows 7 Installation Disc and license key for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit through my university. I think the laptop was previously running Windows 7 Home Premium, but that's all I know, and I'm not entirely sure of that fact.

Anyway, burnt the .iso to disc and have tried to boot several times from DVD Drive. The laptop loads the files from the DVD fine, and gets as far as the "Starting Windows" screen, where it seems to get stuck for a few minutes, until it becomes a black screen with just a cursor (the cursor still moves). This also happens with an 64 bit repair DVD I also managed to get hold of.

Any ideas on what I should or can do next?

Thanks

I had to download the updated drivers for my computer that has windows 2000 loaded on another computer. The drivers were too big to copy to a 3 1/4 floppy, so I copied the drivers to a cd disc. When I try to update the drivers using the cd disc, the pop up screen say "this is not a valid mfg hardware update." I know they are valid because I copied them from the mfg website. How can I get these drivers installed in c:\winnt folder since the first place the installation looks for is files that are under this particular folder first and then ask if you have disk. Any help will be gladly apppreciated. Thanks

Hello,

I just reinstalled Vista with the factory Reinstallation DVD that came with the computer (Dell Inspiron 1525) and now I can't get the WI-FI to work. "Network adapters" does not appear in the Device Manager. From what I've read, it seems as though I need to install the wireless/WIFI drivers, but there are three problems: 1) The Dell support site with the drivers doesn't seem to be working (please provide direct link if you can get a working one. 2) I don't know EXACTLY what drivers to download. 3) I don't know how to install the drivers once downloaded (from what I've read, it's apparently not as simple as just double-clicking and installing.

Your help would be greatly appreciated, as this is my cousin's computer that I'm helping him with.

I've tried downloading again in case it was a corrupt download but same on the second attempt, I've extracted the files and run the Vi64\DPinst.exe install which seemed to work fine although I'm not seeing any difference in control panel, the mouse version isn't updated and I'm not seeing any applet for the touchpad to configure it (although I know that's not always the case now).
Any tricks for running the installer and is it possible to get more options to customise the touchpad?  The main problem is simply that I want to disable the pinch to zoom.

Hi, I'm new to Linux so bare with me, here we go.

Since I have win 7 64bit installed, I thought that it would be correct to
use Linux 64bit too, wrong!!!

The DOS works only with 32bit(BIOS f.34), so I downloaded the
Linux Mint 12 KDE 32bit, and this one works like a charm.

The problem is, and here is my question,

How do I configure wi-fi in Linux?

It asks for some information like a MAC address and some other stuff, of which I have little or no clue.

But this MAC address really confuses me because it seems like there are many kinds:

HFC MAC ID

MTA MAC ID

Router MAC ID

Thanks,

Wrenchman

Answer:How to configure wi-fi in Linux mint, 32bit?

Go to the Terminal, try command MintWifi

You may or may not need NDISWRAPPER.

This method worked for me: http://www.ehow.com/how_6101011_configure-wireless-mint.html

I have a laptop  (HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook 4-1195ca) which required a recovery effort to restore the OS.  Unfortunately the recovery failed and I had to purchase a copy of Windows 10 to get the laptop operational for my daughter going back to school.  I put the MS install of windows 10 on the machine and it operates fine but all of the HP tweaks are not present and the SSD drive is not configured  to help the processor like it was originally. I have attempted to install as much of the software for the machine as I can but it still is not working right. IS there any way I can configure the SSD drive from within the windows 10 install? If I purchase the original factory WIn8 restore disc/USB, will it restore the original setup of the SSD? Please help.

Been unable to install the following updates.

KB952004, KB956572, KB958690, KB959426, KB959772, KB960225 and KB60803.

Tried to install these updates many times since their release and every time they seem to download fine. The problem occurs on restart where it jumps from

Configuring updates Stage 1 of 3 to Configuring updates Stage 3 of 3

Then it says that updates didn't configure properly and reverts the changes.

Please can anyone help? This is getting beyond a joke now.

Answer:Updates wont configure properly

Hello MemoryCrisis, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm not sure what the problem may be, but you might see if only installing them 1 or 2 at a time may allow them to be installed instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Since my return from near non-existence, my parents bought another router to (extend/repeat the wireless signal).

Here is what I have and what I've done so far...

D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router (updated firmware version: 1.34NA 2010-04-16)

and

D-Link DAP-1360 Wireless N Range Extender (firmware Version: V1.02 2009-10-09)
used WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) was added successfully, but the issue is I cannot seem to copy the mac address from the DIR-655 to the DAP-1360, so when you seek a wireless connection in my household, you see 2 different wireless signals, when all I should see is one (very strong) wireless connection.

I used the same SSID name, channel, and encrypted with WPA2-Personal synced 100% clock and all, except the mac address is different.

I have searched high and low for an answer and if anyone here can help me, I would be truly grateful.
Thank you in advance.

Ps- I can post screen shots if requested.

Answer:Can't configure D-Link wireless repeater properly

Does the extender have a setting to "Bridge" the two devices?

Cheers!

I bought a Satellite L500-19C with Windows 7 64 bits and I'm having troubles with the configuration of the keyboard for the correct use of portuguese language.

When I try to accent a letter, par example "a", I get aside "~~" instead of the accent above the letter. I've checked all configurations from Windows and Toshiba SW and everything seems to be fine tuned to portuguese (Portugal).

Please help me in the way to correct it.

Answer:Satellite L500-19C - How to configure keyboard properly?

Hi

Normally you can change the keyboard layout if navigate to control panel > Keyboard. There you should add the keyboard layout that you want and remove all other layouts that you don?t want.

After this the keyboard should work properly.

Hi, I recently downloaded the Wubi Installer for Linux Ubuntu 9.04 and it has been working fine with Windows XP (SP3), I installed it onto a new partition. Shortly after I decided to do a full restore using Samsung Recovery Solution III on my Samsung NC10 netbook, which must have removed something that was used to dual boot Linux. This was my first experience with dual booting so I don't know what the Wubi installer changed to make dual booting possible originally.

Could someone tell me what I have to change or download to get it dual booting correctly again please?

Thanks in advance =)

Answer:Re-configure dual boot with Linux after XP full restore

Download SuperGrub. It will fix most probs.
To avoid your prob , in future load Xp onto the first partition of the first hard drive then install Linux.

This may should like a stupid question but I am not sure so I felt that i should seek assistance from on of the most reliable places I know of.

I have a system that I want to give away but i cant give it away with the current operating system as it is under educators license. Currently the system is running windows xp pro. It is possible to put my older operating system back on the machine. I have been told that I can't by several people but I figured if anyone would know the people in here would ..

I appreciate any and all help with this.

Answer:operating system question about going back to prior operating system

yes you can. if you have NTFS and want to put back win98 or winME you need to format the volume with FAT32. you can use a win98 or winME startup diskette. or you can download one from www.bootdisk.com .

Hey all! I am pretty new to this kind of Win7 issues, so I hope some of you will be able to help. Story goes...

After few hours of gaming the computer died. (It happened right after switching keyboards.) Now, on every setup BIOS(?) comes up with list of options (F2 enter BIOS, F11 boot options, F6 Flash etc.). After that a black screen with error message comes up: Missing Operating System.

I tried rebooting from USB (since I have no disk-drive) and I keep on getting the answer: Error Loading Operating System.

Any ideas?

Thx

Answer:Missing Operating System/Error Loading Operating System

All unlikely, but possible - (a) your HDD died. (b) your bios became corrupted (c) your HDD boot sector became corrupted (d) your HDD partition is corrupted.

Does the drive spin up when you switch on (feel it)?
Check the bios to see if the HDD is reported correctly and is at the top of the boot order.
Find a bootable CD - an OS installer, or create Easeus partition manager bootable CD http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm and boot from it. What does the HDD look like with Easueus?

Hi-I bought a used Dell Optiplex 780 with no o/s installed to replace my old Dell Dimension 3000.  I have a brand new copy of Windows 7 to install on it.  I've reinstalled xp on my old computer 2 or 3 times so I'm not completely new to this but, I thought I'd try to find out as much as possible before I begin.  Any advice will be appreciated.  I am wondering - when I connect the keyboard, mouse and monitor to the Optiplex with no o/s, will it recognize the components so that I can begin the installation of Windows 7?

Answer:installing operating system on computer with no operating system installed

Yes

I have a T42 coming my way. For my plans with this system, I can eliminate needing a spare hdd if I can simply run the linux VMWare w/ a Windows XP or Server 2003 image.

Right now, my plans were to be running XP Pro w/ VMWare XP/2003 image, and doing most of my work in the VMWare image(running FTP tasks, etc.) on the 40gb it comes with, and use a 20 for Ubuntu.
But, if I can run Ubuntu on the 40, and re-use the images I already have set up, I can save myself a lot of time and effort.
Does anyone know if a pre-existing image made on a Windows machine will transfer and operate properly if used in Linux's VMWare?

Answer:Want to move to Ubuntu Linux; do VMWare machines made in Windows work in Linux?

Yes. VM machines created in Windows will work fine in Linux vmware enivronment. And the vice versa is true as well.

I have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:

- a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager
- after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later
- my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing
- actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off
- when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either

Things i've tried to get rid of these problems:
- Virus scan with avast!, a couple viruses found and fixed, but nothing changed.
- disk clean up, nothing changed
- registry clean, nothing changed
- CURRENTLY defragging my C drive, hope something changes..

Anyone know what the heck's going on!?
Anyone got any suggestions on what to do next?
Anything helps and would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Apps not starting properly, sys. recov. doesn't work, can't shut down properly, etc..

no replies yet?

anyway, just stopped by to say that when shutting down, it takes forever to get to the "Saving your settings..." screen, and that's where I decided that it stops and nothing else after that.
Defragged my C drive, still no results besides the computer feeling a bit smoother-running o_o

I just got this great X1 Carbon Touch with i7 and Win 7 Pro.  When I close the lid or even manually triy to put it to sleep, it shuts the screen off, but the machine stays on the first time it did this I threw it in my bag and when I pulled it out 30 min or so later it was almost to hot to touch and the fan was screaming.  I had to manually shut it down.  It generally does not happen frist time after boot, it is generally the 3-4 th time or more. So very unpredictable.

Hi I am using Debian on my X1, everything seems to work generally except that I loose the adaptive fn keys. When I resume everything gets back to where they were except fn. It looks like the fn keys lcd looses power, because I do nto see any light activity what soever. I realize Lenovo recommends Windows, but I cannot use Win due to my job. I am wondering if anyone can offer me a solution regarding the fn keys situation. thanks

When my yoga arrived, the A-L row did not properly pop out when I opened up the lid- I managed to get the row to pop out by pushing the K key slightly upwards, but the entire row still seems recessed even after doing that. The row occasionally still sticks down when flipping between tablet mode and opening the laptop, and almost always sticks when the laptop's been closed for a few hours. Is this a common problem (preferrably one with a common solution) ? It seems like the row of keys might have a downwards bow in it or something similar, if that helps. It really sucks to type on and I'd love to fix this without sending it in for repairs.

Hello, I would like to set the color profile for my Carbon X1 Type 20FC using Ubuntu Linux. I can choose amongst many different profiles there but I am not sure what the right one is. When I look it up at Lenovo Support to follow this explanation of ThinkWiki, it leas nowhere, the Lenovo Link is apparently dead. I also tried downloading 79oi32ww.exe and opened it with innoextract but this gave me a bunch of INF files and I don't know what to do with which actually. I have no idea how to start and how to adjust it, as its a great laptop but however the colours seem a bit weird yellowish and the dark shades drift away and don't work at all at the moment. Thanks for any help, Paul

I haven't even installed linux yet, or tried it on live CD. Currently I have a system running windows xp, ultimately I would like a system with dual OS (linux + windows). I plan to gradually become less dependant on windows, until I only need it for gaming purposes, if that. I have little idea as to how possible or impossible this dream of dual OS is, as I have searched google and the linux.com site for information yielding no definitive answer.

Ideally I would buy another hard drive, and install my chosen distro of linux on this, so that I have XP on one and linux on the other HDD. Can this actually be done? Would this form the basis of a workable dual OS setup? Ubuntu, Kubuntu and madriva are distros that look promising, having been recommended by zegeniestudios.net and gotten good press from Distrowatch.com. I can try before I commit and wish to, using live CD. Is this a no risk way of trying them?

Do all distros of linux require compiling of their kernels in order to achieve greatest effectiveness?

I run a PC I have personally built with an MSI K8 Neo4 motherboard(integrated AC97 sound), AMD 64 3000+ CPU, Belkin wireless network card(is used a lot for internet connection via router), GeForce 6600 graphics card, 450 watt PSU.

I appreciate help on this issue, its fairly urgent, would like to be able to know for certain how to go about switching to linux ASAP.

Answer:LINUX Question: want to install linux on windows xp system + few other questions

Yes, it can be done that way. You can either put it all on one hard drive, which can result in two broken operating systems for beginners, or on two seperate ones. Linux requires 2 partitions, so keep that in mind when setting things up. I've installed Linux both ways; I had to get creative for the 2 OS on 1 setup.

If you install on 2 hard drives, make sure Windows is installed first, then install Linux. If you use the linux boot loader, things should be easier in the end. Be sure to make a boot disk/recovery/emergency disk when prompted in the Linux install.

I had a friend who had a RAID 0 or 1 setup and tried to use a live CD on his computer and it broke his array for some reason. He ended up reinstalling Windows because of it.

It depends on what you plan to do with the OS, in respect to compiling the kernel. If there is a driver you want to add or a modification you wish to make, you may need to recompile.

On the topic of drivers, some distros don't come with wireless drivers for all cards. You might want to look into a wireless driver for your Internet connection before deciding on a distro. Either from Belkin (they might have) or native to the distro. Sound might also require a driver search.
