Thinkpad Helix 1st Gen Digitizer intact but not functioning

Question: Thinkpad Helix 1st Gen Digitizer intact but not functioning

Hi all, My issue is that one day while my laptop was on the bed, it fell onto the floor and I think it broke in half, with the screen assembly seperating partially from the mainboard. I wasn't worried at the time because it seemed like a minor fall, and the computer stayed on and was fine. I snapped the two back together, expecting that nothing was wrong -- but then I noticed the digitizer had stopped working. I turned off and popped open the computer to see if anything inside was visibly damaged. Everything looked fine. It's been a while now, but having been fed up with it, I popped it open and re-checked all the connections to make sure they were tight. It *seems* to me that the digitizer cable may have been folded too aggressively and developed a kink? I could also be seeing something that isn't there. I'm thinking of replacing it, but I don't want to waste $30 for no reason. What could the problem be? Why would what appears to be a perfectly intact and functional digitizer suddenly become absolutely and completely unresponsive? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad Helix 1st Gen Digitizer intact but not functioning

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had a large diet soda dumped on me while I was riding the train to work, it got all over my laptop bag and I thought my helix was spared, I got most of the liquid off the bag and wiped the helix down the best I could at the time, I didn't see anything later that night when I got home.   However a day or so later, I noticed what appeared to be some liquid trapped between the digitizer and LCD, 2 small bubbles in the corner of the screen.  I could probably live with it, but I know me and this will drive me crazy knowing it is there.   A friend suggested putting the helix tablet in a bag of dry white rice for a few days to see if that draws out the moisture.  I guess my question is, what are my options if this doesn't work?   Live with it, or replace the LCD and digitizer in one go?   How difficult/expensive a proposition is this likely to be?   I'm especially mad since I can't afford to replace the whole helix, to buy a similarly specced device is cost prohibitive, unless I buy refurb and even then I don't want to spend quite that much money.

Answer:Liquid intrustion bewteen digitizer and LCD on Thinkpad Helix

The screen and digitizer are one part. The screen is unlikely to be fixed by packing with rice. What is the model? Screen resolution?

Answer any details people know off.. as of now the most info I got online from the pen was the marketing video on the helix lenovo page which should it in an exploded view.  and of course someone using the pen in the video. 1.   Is it an active digitizer pen ? 2.   Is it a wacom unit ? 3.   Will it be utilizing full active support pen detection (inches away from contact from screen)? 4.   will their be a secondary button trigger on side ?  5.   Is the tip going to be a rubberized writing tip (like the samsung s pen) or a pvc plastic setup (like on the microsoft surface pen) ? 6.   how many levels of pressure sensitivity ? 7.   will the helix pen fit into the helix tablet device, into a holder or will the end user have to carry it around ? 8.   and finally like the microsoft surface pro wacom pen it has a button on the back side of the pen that changes resistance in the ped allowing the laptop to utlize that as a third trigger ( ie. eraser)  is this on the lenovo helix pen as well or similar?

Question: Helix Digitizer

How do I determine if my Helix came with a Digitizer? It came with the pen, but the pen does not work at all. The touch screen works fine and all drivers and software have been installed. The pen does nothing when put up to the touch screen. I am trying to determine if there is a hardware issue or simply the hardware does not exist.

Answer:Helix Digitizer

can you plug the pen into the pen silo? Also what is your full model number (or MTM) on the Helix?

I only noticed this problem recently. My Helix was updated to Windows 10 in January and there were no issues with the digitizer until recently. It isn't recognised at all on the screen but the touch feature still works. I don't recal the pen being damaged at all and worked perfectly in the past. Anyone have any advice on how to go about checking if the digitzer is unrecognised on my laptop or is genuinley broken?

I just purchased a Refurbished Helix unit and noticed that there is no pen included. What is the sensitivity of the digitizer on the Helix? I see that there is a Helix specific digitizer pen for sale on the Lenovo site that has 256 levels of sensitivity 0A33910 and a Thinkpad 2 digitizer pen 0A33889 with the same dimensions with 1024 levels of sensitivity. Will the latter fit into the Helix slot and be fully functional with the Helix?

Answer:Helix Digitizer Sensitivity

Hi mikaila, The digitizer pen compatible with the Helix is 0A33910 wich has 256 levels of sensitivity. You might want to check with your model number that your Helix is compatible with digitizer pen though. Some Helix are just multitouch only. Vince.

Hello,i just received my new Thinkpad Helix (First Gen) and after a few days, there is a problem with my digitizer pen. It seems like the Thinkpad reacts to early to the pen. E.g. while using OneNote 2013, I begin writing, before the pen touches the display. There is like a 3-5mm gap between the point where the pen is recognised and the display. I already tried to reset or re-callibrate the pen, but it didn't help. Did anybody have a simillar problem or knowes a fix?

I have a Lenovo Helix model 36984su (Windows 8 Pro 64 bit). I've noticed that when using the pen (specifically in Photoshop CS6 Extended - version 13.0 x64) there is a spot of pen input distortion in the upper right hand section of the screen (if you have the windows button on the bottom, that is) where the pen and the registered input drift apart- not quite right up in the corner, but very near it. The drift can be as extreme as 1/8", and I can see it happening by just drawing a brush stroke right across the screen and then seeing the registered input location and the physical location of the pen on the screen start drifting apart in that area, until they snap back together again right near the far right edge of the screen. Not a huge problem, since I dock most of my PS palettes in that area, and just make sure to click above where I think I should. But, when I have PS in full screen mode and have broad brush strokes that intersect this area, the stroke is distorted by the drift. I have recalibrated the pen input multiple times, even sometimes purposefully mis-registering the upper-right hit test to see if that corrects the drift, all to no avail.  This is roughly right over where I assume the processor sits on the motherboard (since that is the hottest part of the machine at any point) and I wonder if heat/RF noise in that area might be interfering?  I've been lucky enough to use Photoshop in a bunch of Win 8 tablets (f... Hello, I've had a ThinkPad Helix for the past 2 months, and recently out of the blue it's stopped recongnizing the active digitizer. Usually when I take the pen out of the silo I would expect to see something come up on dmesg (I run Linux) stating that a USB device, in this case the active digitizer, just connected. I've tried on both my Linux partition and Windows partition and it doesn't seem to appear to ether one. A few times after this started it would work for a very short period of time, then it'd dissappear all over again. I've talked to support, but they're telling me it would take a few weeks for the parts to come in the mean time (and one of my tickets got canceled claiming I didn't call them back, so now I have to deal with that too). Does anyone know a solution to this problem? I almost want to take apart my helix in the mean time to try and fix it, but I really don't want to void my warrenty.

It is possible to disable the power saving feature that disable the digitizer when the pen is in the silo? I use a Fujitsu stylus and would prefer to keep the Helix pen in the silo so it doesn't get lost, but the digitizer is disabled when it is in the silo. Thanks

Answer:helix - enable digitizer when pen is in silo

There seems to be a small switch inside the silo.If you could disassemble the machine and somehow physically, disable the switch, it would work.Software-wise, I'm not really sure.

I have a Lenovo Helix 1st Gen tablet PC ( i7 3667U 2GH, 8MB Ram, 256SSD).  As soon as updated to Windows 10, the digitizer pen stopped working. Lenovo does not have a Wacom update nor could I find an update on the internet. I spoke with Lenovo Premium Support, and they researched this for me.  Lenovo told me that with the touch screen manufacturer they use, there is no Windows 10 Driver yet, thus the digitizer pen will remain non-functional until this driver is released.  Lenovo said it could be weeks or months before the new driver is available and there would be nothing they can do to fix this until the driver is released.  This news is terrible for me because I use the digitizer pen for work all day long and cannot function without it.  In the mean time, I will have to reinstall Windows 8.1 for now. Ugh!

Answer:Digitizer Pen not working on Helix 1st Gen on Windows 10

Dear User. Appoligise for this "horrible" answer from Lenovo support. I am actually making quite some seriously bad experiences my self with the support related to the pen digitizer. Seems they have no knowldege at all about it and what they telling consumers is quite disappointing. As Global executive at Wacom, the company who is actually making this pens, I will forward your message to our technical team to find out where we are with Windows 10 support. I will post this here also. We have relased drivers for all our branded products, thats for shure. For our components it is the repsonability of the PC vendor (in this case Lenovo), we only release our drivers to them. But lets see what I can do here. I am just so disappointed about my own experience that I browsed this forum.. and its getting even worse. Sorry for this!

Greetings Lenovo, I have been testing the Lenovo Helix at my school and have noticed one annoying flaw.  The digitizer pen doesn't have an eraser!  Our school has been using Lenovo tablet laptops for the past 4-5 years (X61, X200, X201, X220, X230).  All our Senior Students use Microsoft OneNote in their classes and they have an eraser on older machines.  I think if you created a keyboard hotkey for the eraser it would alleviate my concerns about ordering 70 of your Helixes for my school. Thank you.

Answer:Lenovo Helix Digitizer Pen Eraser

It would come at an additional cost, but any Wacom penabled pen should work on the Helix. Even the old Thinkpad pens. They run about $20-30 individually depending on which one you choose. I personally find the convenience of an eraser worth the cost. However, I do agree that Lenovo dropped the ball by not including it on the pen in the first place.

hi all, Appologies for the length, but despite my frustrations over aspects of the helix (fan, heat, digitzer not always working etc) I've been happy that I'd bought the device as a "right choice", hence the high level of frustration at things going differently... 3-4 weeks ago my helix started suffering with up to half the screen no longer working (from simply black to an interference style pattern).  At this stage HDMI out worked as did the digitzer, even if I couldn't see what the pen would click on. I phoned up the CH support line (in English) and ended up with a number of nice call center people who said I'd have an engineer out for the next business day.  I then had a period of 3 days without being called, and after chasing on the support was informed a part had been ordered.  Two days later I had a visit from the engineer. The on-site engineer, like the call staff, was very nice (even in the face of having to sit in a restaurant to look at the panel).  He returned the device the next day with a brand new panel.  However I then discovered the digitzer wasn't working. A week later after a series of remote software installations and bios upgrades another on-site engineer came out.  He too was very pleasent, and was also visibily irratated that the digitzer didn't work after yet another panel swap. In all cases I had to chase the support to find out what the current status was.  This I find to be poor custome... Answer:[Helix] Panel replaced twice digitizer dead and hdmi no longer working

well to answer my own question and make sure others know to stay away from Helix / possibly Lenovo... I had the machine replaced.  The DOA team and the lenovo team were again great, I can't state this clearly enough.  But they are helping on a badly made / designed / engineered product.  It overheats, the pen stops working (usb device not recognized etc), could be the flex in the screen but its definitely a hardware problem. The replacement came, worked for 2 weeks and then died.  Then I had to go through the same remote support - install everything - process as before.   Again, as before, the machine was simply not functioning. The replacement got replaced.  The new one worked for 6 weeks before it started happening again.  As of last week the pen no longer works at all, same as before. Off to start another round of attempting to get a replacement or this time a refund. Again to be clear, there is only one device on the market that has the same functionality as this - the Fujitsu, and I love the functionality and the excellent keyboard, but I can't really rely on the machines quality at all.   More accurately I can only rely on the lack of build quality :<

I broke my hinge a few weeks ago when I was packing up to leave class (which is indicative of the poor lenovo build/engineering quality that I've come to expect). The pen stopped working (even after I installed the wacom drivers I still get code 10 - the device cannot start). The buttons on the tablet don't work (orientation, esc, arrows, etc.). The fingerprint reader does not work. The laptop does not recognize the screen's orientation (open/closed/tablet). Most of the LED indicators do not function (System power and hard drive activity work, but NUM/CAPS lock, wifi, battery, plug, and sleep do not). I opened the laptop and replaced the hinge. I also replaced all the wiring (as it seemed like it might be damaged by the broken hinge) to the lcd assembly and the inverter card (it came with the wiring assembly). New hinge works great, but the features are all still gone. Is this a problem with my microprocessor board? (Item 14 - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67024) I'm guessing that it is... Is there a high probability that I need a new lcd assembly? I don't really understand the interplay between the inverter board, the fingerprint reader, the digitizer, and the microprocessor board. Does anyone here know? EDIT: 7764CTO, Vista Business (fresh install)Message Edited by jcy6h on 03-21-2009 10:16 AM

I've seen several threads about this issue, but none that address my specific concern.

I have a ThinkPad Yoga 14. It did not come with a digitizer pen included. However, I suspect that the screen does in fact have a Wacom digitizer layer. My rationale is this:

My computer came pre-installed with the Wacom Pen Calibration Software
Device Manager reports the following HID devices:-- HID-compliant digitizer-- HID-compliant pen-- Wacom Device
When I run the Wacom Hardware Check (available here), it reports "You have hardware compatible with the Wacom FEEL driver."
All of the 20DM008 models listed at http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/179 support the active pen (I cannot find the 20DM008U++ model there for some reason)

However, the computer will not recognize the ThinkPad digitizer pen I purchased.

So, I suppose I have three questions:

Am I just misinterpreting what I am seeing in the Device Manager?
Is it possible that Lenovo installs the Wacom screen on all it's tablets, but disables them somehow on models not marketed as digitizer ready?
If so, is there any way for me to enable my screen to allow for digitizer use?

Good day.

Looking at the models that support pen at the PSREF link you included, please notice that it specifies "Active Pen". This is not the same as the ThinkPad Digitizer Pen. That's why it won't work for you.

Hi, After working out that my laptop (Thinkpad Yoga S1) most likely has a digitizer, I purchased a pen for it. However, since I wasn't 100% sure, I bought a cheaper, off-brand pen that people said was compatible, the listing for which can be found here. I received it today, but my computer seems unresponsive when I try to use it. When I went to Wacom Pen or Pen and Touch Input, the pen calibration screens were either blank (Wacom) or didn't load (Input). Is there something else I have to do to make my pen work? Did I purchase the wrong pen? If it helps, the pen slot on my computer is still plugged; I was going to unplug it, but to do so I'd have to remove the back paneling, and one of the screws keeping it in place has been stripped. The thread confirming that my laptop has a digitizer is here. Thanks!

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga digitizer pen

Hi

Please notice that this is my personal opinon and it does not mean I'm 100% right, this is based on my experience.

I think that the "Digitizer PEN for Lenovo ThinkPad X60 X61 X200 X201" is for older Thinkpad models. I have a Thinkpad Yoga 14 (Similar to S1) (20DM008UUS) and it has a digitizer screen, but it requires an "active pen" (with batteries inside) to be able to work with the digitizer.

I have the Thinkpad Pen Pro and it works fine with my model. I still think you have a digitizer on your laptop but I think it is the wrong pen.

Here it also some more info about the pen that Amy wrote.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

I can only talk from my experience.  I have ThinkPad Pen Pro 4X80H34887 on my Thinkpad Yoga 14 ( 20DM008UUS ).
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/itemdetails/4X80H34887/460/41E9A3C3FB5A45A9AC47C56812E4188C

For what I know (I may be wrong) the Pen Pro uses Wacom technology, it has a battery inside. I found it very nice with a nice size... but it depends on personal taste.

Can you post the full model number of the computer you want to check it will work with the pen?
I know that the Thinkpad Pen Pro web page may not say much. So, what I saw it was recomended on this forum was:
1) Check your computer model against the PSRef Books: http://psref.lenovo.com/
See if your model is listed with "Active Pen" support.

2) There is more information about the Thinkpad Pen Pro here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/acc100178

There is also the Thinkpad Yoga Pen , but I don't have experience with that one, some amazon review says it does not have batteries and it focus for replacement for Thinkpad Yoga that came with pen... but I don't know.

I learned that the digitizer with Helix cannot be used as an eraser, does the ThinkPad Yoga digitizer have the same problem? Thanks

Solved!

Answer:ThinkPad Yoga Digitizer Question

the digitiser pen on Helix, TPT2 and Yoga all lack the traditional eraser function of the traditional ThinkPad X series tablet. There is a side button on the digitiser pen, which you can use for eraser function. Alternatively, get the X series tablet digitiser pen which has an eraser function, they work with the ThinkPad Yoga (and is what i am using now).

Hello,I just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 12 (20DL000SIX) that does not come with the pen apparently (I still have to receive it physically), but *does* have the full HD capacitive screen multitouch (1920 x 1080).I also bought separately the Thinkpad Yoga digitizer pen (4X80F22110).I spent a lot of time to understand if the two are compatible (i.e. the wacom digitizer is installed or not on the laptop), and on Lenovo website, following Products -> Accessories&Software -> Search For Compatible Accessories For Your System, it looks that indeed they are:http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:find-compati... I see that there are multiple posts on similar issue, confirming that the communication of Lenovo about pens and digitizer is really inadequate.I read in many places that the thinkpad yoga's that don't come with the pen do *not* have the digitizer. I also read that the full HD screens does have te digitizer. So, I'm getting confused...: my yoga does have the full HD but does not come with the pen included! There is no clear information anywhere and also the Lenovo  support (I called on the phone many times) is not satisfactive on this.Does anyone have the same model, or have a more clear idea on this topic? Thanks!Giulia

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga 12: digitizer? (20DL000SIX)

Hi giulsi

I also agree with you on this subject. There is much confusion with the "pens" on Thinkpad Yogas.
I think that Lenovo should specify better on the webpage (shop) which Thinkpad Yoga came with Active Pen, and on the Pen pages (also on the shop page) they should specify which models apply for it, and where to search if you computer has support for it.

How to know if you Thinkpad Yoga is Pen Compatible?
For the moment one thing that works to know if your Thinkpad is "Pen Compatible" is to search on the PSRef books.
http://psref.lenovo.com/
or
http://psref.lenovo.com/Book

I searched your model:
http://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/ThinkPad_Yoga_12?M=20DL000S%2B%2B
It says it has:

Pen
Digitizer pen

So that's good......
There are other models that says "Active Pen".. not sure if that means it only works with the "Thinkpad Pen Pro" or not.

How to resolve the question of which pen is good for you?
Thinkpad Yoga Pen suppor page:
https://support.lenovo.com/ec/es/documents/pd030464
It says "The ThinkPad Yoga Pen supports the ThinkPad Yoga." So it may also work.

I'm guessing that it will work, but please post back when you get your pen to see if it works with your model.
Regards

I just purchased a refurbished Thinkpad S1 Yoga from outlet. The description mentioned nothing about coming with a pen or having digitizer compatibility although these descriptions are generally not very detailed to begin with. I was reading that some of these machines (FHD) with the same specs as mine don't come with a pen nor  compatibility and am not sure if those two features can exist separately.  I think the newer versions all have both. Is there a way to tell if mine's compatible or not? I don't think it will come with a pen and I don't want to open the box before finding out. Part number if it helps: MP053KKL-20CDCTR1WW Thanks.

Hello everyone, I'm in the market for a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga for work. It needs to have the digitizer pen/panel. How do I determine if the model has a digitizer pen/panel? Is a 1080p panel enough to determine it? I'm looking at stores online and they don't really list this information. Thanks in advance

I've read that the 20cd0032us and 33us Thinkpad Yoga models are the only ones without an active digitizer.  However, this appears to be all that is for sale on Amazon and other places.  Any idea of where you can but a Thinkpad Yoga with an active digitizer??

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga w/ active digitizer

They are only available on Lenovo's website as far as I've seen. I tried looking other places like Amazon, too, but haven't seen the digitizer model. I ended up buying one directly.

Hey guys!I am looking forward to buy this beauty here: http://shopap.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/yoga-series/yoga-14/ it's the second one with the 256 GB ssd and i7.I already asked this question to the Facebook Page of Lenovo Australia and New Zealand, but the guys there didn't get it.Does this particular laptop come with a wacom digitizer? So could I use, let's say, a wacom intuos pen to draw, make sketches and write notes?I asked the guys on Facebook if the laptop comes with an active digitizer layer, but all they answered was "it doesn't come with an active pen". They didn't answer on my second question whether or not if it comes at least with a wacom digitizer. That's why I signed up here Thanks for your help!

Maybe i should add that I already looked up the details on the sales page and all it says is: "Active pen: none"

Ok so i just recieved a thinkpad yoga S1. The one i got was the one without the digitizer pen automatically installed into the computer's side. The pen came separately and its the exact same one as the one used with the version that comes with the pen. I dont know the product code or even what its called. Which driver do i install and how can i register the product? Also, since the version i have has like a little black piece where the digitizer normally goes is there any way i can take it out and be able to accomodate the pen that came seperatly?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga S1 digitizer help

I think there is only two options it either comes with the pen or it doesn't. The one that doesn't have the pen built into it doesn't support the pen because of the panel used. That is waht I remember when I was researching into this unit.

I had to reformat a ibm thinkpad x41 1866-cxu ,  and the digitizer pen will not work, i tried the system update,  but it will not open, and im at the end of my witts here on this problem,  any help would be appreciated.  I have windows xp tablet edition on it,  and the pen worked before i reformated and re-installed windows. i don't know what else to do...

Answer:ibm thinkpad x41 1866-cxu digitizer pen not working

Couple of questions for you: 1) How did you reinstall windows? Did you use the IBM Recovery CDs *, Reload the OS with F11 *,  or install a market version of XP Tablet? * I'd highly recommend using the original IBM image to ensure there are no issues with drivers!! 2) Did you update all the Tablet drivers? If not, go to this website to install the driver: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-60154 You may want to also use the ThinkVantage System Update Tool to check for missing drivers (Start->Programs->ThinkVantage->System Update) - If you don't have our original preload installed, download this utility from here:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=TVSU-UPDATE This should at least get you started. Best,Mark

Hi everyone. I am looking to buy a laptop for university (studying engineering). I would like something that is durable, and powerful. Thats why I am looking into getting the Thinkpad Yoga. I love the convertable and compact feel, as well as the SSD that I will be getting with it.  However, another reason why I wanted to get it is because of the 'Active Digitzer'. I didn't even know what this was called since a week ago, and I still cant seem to understand what this feature will allow me to do? How does the Digitzer benefit me? Especially when I compare it to the Yoga Pro 2 (even tough that also has a touchscreen). Am I unable to draw on a YP2? Would I not be able to draw on the screen? I want to use it mainly when I use Adobe Illutrator. Is the Digitzer option worth the extra money I have to pay? With that feature added on, I will be paying almost $2000 :s

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga: Is it worth it and Digitizer?

Hi there: I have been using X230T, a predessor of Thinkpad Yoga. X230T also comes with a digitizer. I bought X23)T also for a reason: I can take note during class. I am not an engineer but a finance student. 1. You might want an Active Digitizer because it allows you to write on-screen. Use Microsoft One Note. Your computer can replace your pen and paper.2. You can still draw on YP2. But what do you feel when you use your finger, say your pointer, as a pen  YP2 does not have a digitizer pen. 3. The pen I believe is included. You do not have to pay extra unless you want to have a spare one. 4. I think Lenovo Thinkpad has lost its quality legacy from IBM. I do not like the new layout of the keyboard (I like the trackpoint but the moust click now share with the trackpad. It is just ridiculous. You cannot have an accurate click with it (for me))5. Just look at the Microsoft new Surface pro 3. You might like it! If the next time I upgrade my computer, I would by a Surface pro instead of the Thinkpad.   Cheers

Hi, Could somebody please point me to the place where it list the digitizer in the Thinkpad Yoga as a Wocom? I see it all over in review sites, but I can't find it in the description or the product specifications. I'm interested in this model:20CD00AVUS, which I know includes a digitizer, but I want to make sure its definitely Wacom... they all just say "digitizer". So I guess what I am trying to figure out is:1. Are ALL digitizers installed in Thinkpad Yoga's the same, or do they vary in brand/quality?2. How can I find out if its a Wacom? Thanks for the help.

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga - Wacom Digitizer?

First off the digitizer technology consists of two parts the digitizer enabled screen and the digitizer pen. Second i'd say all the TPYs have the same digitizer Technology (both screen and pen) licensed from Wacom. So the pen itself is probably prdouced by Lenovo or a third party. --- By the way other products like the Surface Pro, Vaio Duo or Galaxy Note have the same technology built in and you can use there respective digitizer pens for the TPY as well.

Hi! I would like to buy this Thinkpad yoga model and I would like to know if the screen is digitizer enabled and it comes with the pen. So the majority of the vendors told me that the storage is 180Gb SSD and that the digitizer pen is not included. Anyway the screen is an fhd1920 x 1080, so my question is... If I buy a pen somewhere willl I be able to use the digitizer stylus anyway?Thank you

Hello, I just received my new shiny TPY (again). The first time I got it, the digitizer wasn't working. After a bit of research I realized that it probably was a hardware issue (No digitizer, pen or wacom device in device-manager). So I send it back. The mainboard got replaced and today I have my machine back. It was all working fine including the digitizer. But from one minute to the other it stopped working and I can't find any wacom or digitizer devices in the device-manager.Now my first thought was, that the Windows updates messed something up, so I've done a rollback but it's still not working.Am I doing something wrong or is it a hardware issue again? Thanks for advance.Robinhuett

Answer:ThinkPad Yoga - Digitizer is not working

Hello. It isn't a Hardware Problem. It seems to be a software problem after Windows 8.1 Update. I have the same problem :-( When I start the PC it works perfect, until I used it as Tablet. After that the Digitizer Pen didn't work. So I reinstalled all drivers. After that the pen worked.. so I tested it again as Tablet, after that. the Digitizer Pen didn't work. Now I installed all drivers again but the Pen didn't worked. It is a big problem at Lenovo, because Lenovo has problems with the pen software a long time. It is soooo sad because I love the Thinkpad Yoga but with this Problem the price isn't acceptable. So I am going to send it back and wait for the Surface Pro 3. Because Thinkpad stands for the perfect Business Notebook and now... Lenovo has with the digitizer pen more problems than all others. And this is very sad :-(

So like I do from time to time, I'm configuring a Thinkpad Yoga to mull over (window shopping until I can afford one) when I notice that there's no mention of a digitizer or pen functionality any more, anywhere. Did something happen to it? Pen support was a deal breaker for me.

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga - Digitizer not available anymore??

I noticed this missing info too when ordering my custom ThinkPad Yoga, so at checkout I added pen from the optional accessories. When my laptop arrived, it came with two pens! One inside the laptop package, and another in separate box. I suppose it might be their website issue or country-specific supply issue.

Hello, I am in the market for an ultrabook 2-in-1. Tablet mode for taking class notes and annouting as well as drawing and laptop mode for when I want to do brutal typing and workhorse class stuff.

I bought a refurb Yoga off of eBay with the digitizer and while the experience has been good, problems have started to crop up. I have image retention on the lower portion of my screen when the 8.1 start button used to be. Its only noticeable when I'm on certain darker backrounds....I don't see it on black screens...Also my touchpad is a bit bugger coming out of sleep.

I saw the Helix and it seems to have the same form factor except better handling in tablet mode. But I've read it has heating issues and poor battery life? The Yoga I am on is not that good with battery even with Haswell so I can't imaging the Helix being very good...

For those that have the Helix what do you like about it and has Lenovo solved some of the quirks..like heating, image retention and other stuff. Thanks. It's too bad other companies have their own compromises and those that don't are really expensive. Lenovo seems to have dropped the ball on their thinkpad line

Answer:YogaS1 Vs Helix: Has Lenovo solved Helix Heat, IR Issues...trying to decide between Yoga and Helix

Hello. Here's my couple of cents, for what they're worth, but I've had my Helix for a couple of weeks now and I absolutely love it. Have everything updated, BIOS, keyboard dock firmware and Windows 8.1.1 and it's smooth as silk in performance. My model is the i5-3337U / 4GB RAM / 128GB SSD, and I've never noticed any heat issues with it that I perceive as abnormal. The FHD IPS screen is phenomenally good, battery life is superb for this kind of machine, but I'm getting 8-10 hours easily on it with the keyboard dock attached, and good 4-6 hours on the tablet alone. And this on the default balanced power setting. The only thing I changed on it regarding that is to disable the auto-brightness feature while on AC, but it did flicker a lot while the setting was enabled. Otherwise, I've had a couple of hang ups on the ClickPad when resuming from sleep, but I just eject the tablet and connect it again to regain full functionality again. A minor quirk. The only real issue I have with it is the price, but it is expensive. However, this is a ThinkPad, and the quality of the hardware, along with the standard ThinkPad security and setup features gets my stamp of approval.

Hey, just in case someone is interested in pressure sensitivity for the Thinkpad Yoga.Try this driver from wacom ;-)http://www.wacom.eu/index4.asp?pid=9278&lang=de This morning I had a phone call with the Lenovo Support Europe regarding the subject, but all they were able was to tell me to send my brand new Yoga in. I can not tell you how disappointed I am from this support. They are hardly to understand and they know nothing!!! As an early adopter of the Thinkpad Tablet 1 this was not my first experience with them and the only reason to buy the Yoga was that there is no alternative for my kind of usage. Nevertheless I found the solution by my self and I can't tell you how happy I am. Not to be misunderstood, this is a problem of the european support I don't believe (or hope) that it is the same with the US support and especially the Lenovo Staff in this forum does a really good job!

Hi, Today (or last night, not sure) three columns of my TPY 460's digitizer seem to have stopped working. Two of them are right next to each other, the third one a little further to the right. (I'm guessing the number of columns by the distance of the small dots that you can see on the display when you look at it from an angle). When I tap the pen onto the two defective columns, nothing happens, when I drag it across, it stops on one side and then jumps to the other. It's similar for the single column, but there isn't a complete stop and a jump, more of a non-linearity, the cursor moves slower, then faster, then slower again. For finger touch, the problem is similar. Is this a common problem that can be fixed by properly plugging  some cables or should I return the computer? (It's a demopool device, so I have no warranty, but I can return it within two weeks without a reason).

Hi I hope someone can help me. I have had my S1 for about 10 months now and i have had no issues with the pen and using it. I used the pen last weekend in lectures, taking notes with no issues or problems and have gone to use it today, as part of my assignment, and it just isn't working at all. It doesn't matter if its in laptop, tent or tablet mode, i get no resposne from the pen at all. I have had a look in the device manager and have no issue notifications, but likewise, i can't locate anythingthat i think looks like the digital pen drivers (nothing Wacom in there). I have searched around the forums and o-line and can't seem to find anything that might help me. Twice now, my Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet Digitizer Pen - stylus has dropped out of the tablet only to be found later on my family room floor.   Given the expensive price tag on these pens (Office Depot has for $65), it would be nice if these pens could be locked into place so that they don't come up "missing" for whatever reason.   Has anyone else found a way to keep better track of their pen, short of not putting it in the holder on the tablet? Joe

Have you tried to tether it to your tablet?  There is a hole in the stylus clip and the tablet that you can use.  Beyond that, you can send it in to have the stylus catch replaced and see if that helps.

Hello all, apologies if this is a duplicate issue, but my searches did not turn anything up. I just received my new TPY a couple of days ago and have been happily installing software. Today was the first time I really tried using my digitizer pen, as I finally had time to open Photoshop and Illustrator. In doing so, however, I discovered pen calibration is completely messed up for the top edge of the screen. I tested it outside of the Adobe programs and the same problems occur there. I have already gone in and tried recalibrating my pen more than once using the calibration tools in the Control Panel. Is this a known issue that I just need a driver update for or is this a hardware issue? Any help is appreciated. Thanks,Erika

I have just purchased the ThinkPad Yoga. I was wondering if there is a way to change what "handedness" you on when using the digitizer pen. I am left handed and the pen is obvioulsy configured to be used with your right hand. So when I write using the pen the writing and the pen tip to not match up like it is supposed to. It matches perfectly if I were to write something with my right hand but when I use my left hand, the writing is off (as in the letters do not match up to where I wanted to write them) Any information on this would be great, kind of anoying for trying to add notes in class. Thanks

Today my digitizer stopped working for the first time since I purchased my Thinkpad Yoga several years ago. Touch screen still works as normal. I don't think it's software related because I dual boot Windows and Ubuntu and it doesn't work in either operating system. Before it would work in both operating systems, and I haven't had any updates since it was last working. Is it possible for the digitizer itself to be broken somehow? I haven't dropped the device or spilled any liquid on it. I've read elsewhere on the forum that the digitizer is powered by a capacitor that is charged within the laptop. Is this still true for Thinkpad Yogas? Are there steps I can take to diagnose the issue?

Question: Thinkpad Helix

I was considering to buy the thinkpad tablet 2 as well as the surface pro. I won't buy either of them. The TPT2 has not enough processing power and the surface lacks battery lifetime. Now I saw this: http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/6/3844010/lenovo-thinkpad-helix-convertible Can anybody see why we should not buy this? (other than the high price)

Answer:Thinkpad Helix

IMHO, everything depends on what do you need it for. I don't know yet, what is the position of this product against X-tablet series. Probably Thinkpad helix wan't have a docking station, exchangeable battery, exchangeable hard drive, memory etc and other components like the X-series. This is why I use x-series tablet, years are passing and you can change what you need in this tablet and it still goes on perfectly. Suppose battery. Under typical, everyday use, battery after a year needs replacement. After a two years, it's almost useless in terms of capacity. If you have a system, where you cannot change battery easily, than it's a real problem - the system is not mobile anymore, as it lasts only 30% of the initial time. So for my needs, I'll stick with x-series tablet and maybe buy TPT2 as a second device, which is intended for a little different tasks, than the "full" tablet.   V.

Hello everyone, I am very interested in purchasing a Helix when it becomes available in the states, but I am torn between the i5/4gb model and the i7/8gb model.  My current laptop has an intel Pentium processor so it isn't even comparable to the ivy bridge processor, which brings me to ask, will I notice a performance difference between the two models?  I will mostly be using this to handle large pdf files and make annotations, in addition to surfing the web with many tabs, streaming, etc.  What programs would I need to run in order to see a clear performance advantage, and do you think the i7 model is worth the extra $400 or so in my case? Thanks for the input!

Answer:Thinkpad Helix i5 vs. i7

I think the answer is based importantly on the memory. Anytime you have more memory this is bound to speed up your computer. And nowadays, 4 GB isn't really a lot, especially with Windows 8 IMO. I have the i7 with 8 GB. It's extremely fast and fluid. Unless the i5 comes with 8 GB, and u want to save some money by downgrading the processor then I'm sure it would be reasonable think to do.

The computer is often hanging, taking long time to connect to newtorks, geting black screen sometimes when its docked with the lenovo dockingstation. Have installed all the newest drivers, and the latest bios 1.31. FW for keyboard and so on. Any one els that got this problems? //EW

Answer:Thinkpad Helix

Hi EmilW I got a Helix bought in July 2013. Started with W8 and then upgraded to W8.1 and now running W10. I haven't any of these problems as you descripe. I have had an issue with the docking station that caused the computer to freeze when I used a USB adapter that for some reason caused the dockingstaion to stop working. Then I had to  use the reset function in dockingstation to get the dockingstaion to work again. Have you tried to run hardware diagnostic tool to determine if this tool can report any hardware errors like bad RAM or disk or CPU running too hot?

It seems that Bluetooth is disabled or otherwise does not exist on my shiny new Thinkpad Helix. You can see that there no listing in Device Manager, and the option to enable it is grayed out: http://i.imgur.com/yXcXdG6.png I have already tried installing new drivers, but the installation fails because the installer does not recognize that I have a bluetooth device on my computer. Is this a known issue, and is there anything that I can do to fix this other than send it back? That is is possible, but I would rather not part with my lovely new computer so soon, and I tend to be a DIY guy.

Answer:No Bluetooth on Thinkpad Helix

Lenovo, can you please look into this for us?

I am having a problem with a ThinkPad Helix and was looking for some advice on the troubleshooting process. The tablet was dropped and it suffered some damage. When I received the tablet I noticed that it still powered on but there was no video. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the monitor is still displaying video but it is very dim. When I shine a flashlight to the monitor I can see the windows logon screen and the touch panel recognizes me tapping the screen. The first thing that I tried was replacing the cables that connect the monitor to the motherboard as some of them looked like they had forcefully been removed. This had no effect on the issue as the monitor was still very dim when I powered it on. I thought that the monitor was the problem and decided to replace the entire screen assembly. I was able to get another monitor that matched the part number of mine and swapped it with the old one. When I turned it on after swapping the monitor I stil the had a very dim screen. If it wasn't the monitor or the cables that connect the monitor to the motherboard then the only thing that was left was the motherboard. Again, I found a replacement motherboard for the unit and swapped it. When I powered it on I still had the same issue as before, very dim video. I am still unsure as to what could be causing the issue and any help would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't look like the thinkpad helix has an lcd inverter or I would have tried replacing that first.... Read more

Answer:ThinkPad Helix No LCD Backlight

First, I have never taken a Helix apart, so I am not an expert. On a normal notebook, when you close the lid, there is a Hall Sensor (magnetic switch) that is tripped when the LCD approaches the palmrest by a magnet in the palmrest. If you have a dock on the helix, I would guess it has a magnet so that the machine can capture the "lid closed" event. My guess is that you broke the sensor inside the screen assembly. The sensor is usually somewhere around the outside of the screen. If you have a dock, you might be able to find the magnet by sliding something like a paper clip around the face

thinking about getting one of these but the storage space isn't enough. The site listed the drive as a micro Solid State Drive Serial ATA3.  i'm not sure how to take things apart for the helix since the components are in the tablet not the dock. Which types of solid state drives will work if i decide to upgrade? i found a samsung pm841 512gb mSATA 3 SDD  or Crucial's M500 drives which are guaranteed to work with all lenovo thinkpad helix according to the text on top.   which drive should i get and how would i go about inserting this in the helix? appreciate any help and thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad Helix SSD Upgrade?

I'm in the same boat and I found this: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/helix_hmm_en_0c10337.pdf It certainly looks doable I don't see any mention of glu/special too etc. I'm gonna wait for a month or so before ordering - I bet someone will take one apart by then:-)

I thought I ordered an encrypted SSD on my new TP Helix, but a call to Lenovo revealed my SSD is not encrypted and doesn't have the TPM I wanted. I need this machine to be HIPAA & HITECH compliant, but I'd rather avoid having to send back my Helix for another one with this feature. I'm wondering if setting a combination of passwords will be enough to keep a thief from accessing the data on the SSD, or would they be able to bypass any password combo just by removing the SSD from the tablet? So, I guess I have two questions: 1) how easy would it be for a thief to remove the Helix's SSD and get access to the data even though a hard drive (SSD) password is set, and 2) is there a combination of passwords that would be sufficiently difficult (meeting the standards of HIPAA and HITECH) to block access to the SSD's data, and what are they (admin + user passwords, or hard drive + user passwords, or some other combination)?

Answer:How secure is the SSD of the ThinkPad Helix?

I don't believe there is any encrypted SSD option for Helix which uses an mSATA SSD.
So you are limited to using BIOS password (ATA password) and/or software encryption (like BitLocker or 3rd-party solutions).  Whether these things meet the standards you mentioned or not, I have no idea.

The SSD password is hardware-level security, but it's not encryption.  It means anyone who moves the entire SSD to another system still would not be able to access the SSD (unless they know the password), but if they have the ability to desolder the NAND chips from the SSD, they could potentially access the unencrypted data on them.

Using software encryption like BitLocker would encrypt the contents NAND chips.  And BitLocker supports AES-256 encryption which is as good as anything.

I would say a combination of using both ATA password and BitLocker with AES-256 would be sufficient for any purpose, but again I have no idea whether the standards you mention would see it this way or not.

The screen on my Thinkpad X201 mysteriously cracked one day, but the multi-touch, pen digitizer and LCD all still function perfectly. The only problem is the glass on top. Is there a part # for this or is it easy to replace without having to replace the entire LCD/digitizer part?

Answer:Thinkpad X201: Matte glass cracked but LCD/digitizer perfectly fine, easy to replace?

The digitizer is glued to the LCD making replacement of just one of the two parts nearly impossible. Brad

Hello, I have a Thinkpad Helix that suddenly started showing strange behavior.  The user reported that it wouldn't wake up from sleep state.  She brought it by the show us and it wouldn't boot at all.  While troubleshooting I realized that removing it from the keyboard would allow it to start. Here is what I know:The user has only had the tablet since the begining of May.We removed windows 8 and installed windows 7 per the users request. The keyboard dock firmware is up to date.If I turn the tablet on first and then insert it into the dock, it will stay on and it will charge, but no inputs are received from the keyboard dock. At this point I'm thinking hardware failure.  Any thoughts? Thanks,Ian

Good evening, I am having an issue with a new laptop. A Lenovo Helix model that when I close the lid sometimes, when I reopen it, the computer doesn't power up, its like it gets stuck in hibernation mode or it just dies. To get it to boot again or to even come up, I have to reset the dock / keyboard unit that the Helix screen sits down on.On occassion as well, the keyboard base unit is what isn't working. The screen and touch interface is ok.I have to pin hole reset the base unit to get it to come up. I have run all Think UpdatesI have run all diagnostics with nothing found as an issue.Does anyone know if this is a system wide issue? I have a similar issue on a X1 Carbon as well. Will check the boards there for anything out there.

Hello everyone, I'd like to disable the lid-close sensor on my laptop altogether. Is there a software-only way to do this? If not, where is the magnet located on this device and how best can I remove it? Thanks

Answer:Disable Thinkpad Helix Lid Sensor

Hello. Open up your Power Options in Control Panel and in the list on the left side of the window you'll find "Choose what closing the lid does". Click on that and in the following window, you just select Do Nothing when closing the lid. See if that doesn't do the trick.

Laptop is fully charged and even if i try to charge it now, it doesn't even gets charged. Please help.

Answer:Helix thinkpad tablet pc not booting

Good day and welcome to the community.

Sorry you're having difficulty.
In my experience, a fan error is not something that is cleared by any kind of reset. It pretty much means that the fan needs to be replaced.

I would recommend that you contact Support (info below) to discuss and confirm.

Hope this helps a bit.
Regards.

Hi everyone. After searching every place I can I have not found anything that addresses the issue of a Fan Error with my Helix. The error is from the tablet itself, not the dock, and I am curious if there is anything I can personally do (already tried the reset button with a paperclip) without needing to send it in as this problem has to, of course, happen a week before a trip I am taking. Thanks for any help!

Hello, I've got a Thinkpad Helix 3698, and sometimes after shutting it down, it will restart instead of staying off. Has anyone ever experienced this issue? Kind regards,Daniel

Answer:Thinkpad Helix often restarts instead of shutdown

Yes,  my Helix has this behavior.  No matter what I do whenever I shut down it shuts down and the screen goes black.  If If I touch the screen it back on again.  I actually have to restart the unit and then depress the power button to get it to turn off.   I have updated the bios and have updated all of the software but really don't know what to do from here.  This is really disappointing.  Does anyone know what I might try to remedy this issue? Thanks,Ron

I just bought a second hand X1 Helix (an i5 3337U model). When I tried to press F1 on start, it displayed "Entering Setup" and then became black screen for over 10 minutes and never got into BIOS menu! When I pressed F12 it could properly display every boot options including USB bootable devices. But if I chose USB bootable devices it immediately returned back to F12 menu and refuse to boot into USB device. If I chose "Setup" then it became black screen over 10 minutes and never got into BIOS menu. Now it can ONLY boot into current OS Win10 but it's toooooo slow for me to use. I can't recover the original Win8 or even install a new Win7 due to the BIOS error above I described.
