upgrade operating system

Question: upgrade operating system

I have an HP m8517c with vista 64 is there a driver that would allow me to upgrade to windows 7, 8 or 10?

Preferred Solution: upgrade operating system

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: upgrade operating system

Normally Windows 7 will run OK on a Vista PC. You can run the Windows Upgrade advisor to check. a look at the Windows 10 advisor here Keep in mind, it is not a free upgrade for any of those.

I am running an old computer with ME. I am going to get XP. However there appears to be an upgrade version of XP and the whole XP operating system. I assume that the upgrade option will be easier to install. Which is the best and easiest option?.Any comments gratefully received

Answer:How to upgrade from ME operating system to XP

If you want to keep all your old programs and settings, go for the upgrade. If you want to start afresh with a clean installation of XP, nothing saved, go for an oem or retail copy of XP. You can always burn your old data to cd\dvd.Make sure your ME computer has enough grunt to run XP. A 1ghz cpu and 512Mb of ram is a good starting point.

Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook AH512 Intel Pentium B960 6GB 750GB HDMI 15.6" Laptop

This post is related to the laptop detailed above.

This is a new laptop, as yet unused, still in its original packaging. The laptop has installed Windows 8, which I would like to upgrade to Windows 10. This should be easy enough, as I've already performed the upgrade to Windows 10 on my desktop computer without any problem. However, before doing anything to this new machine, I'd also like to add a second operating system, Windows 7, to the same hard drive, and would be very grateful if anyone reading this post could explain, in very simple terms, how I would go about doing this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to choose which operating system to use each time I start the laptop. Please include as much detail in your reply, with step by step guide. All constructive responses welcome. Many thanks.

I wanted to upgrade my OS from windows 2000PRo to Windows XPpro.  All system requirements are met, with the exception of those of the Bus Clock.  I have it at 100 megahertz, and 300 are needed.  How would I go about changing that, or should I just wait and get a new computer?

I bought my daughter an Acer Aspire One D257 - despite the fact that it came with Windows 7, but only 1GB of RAM. I really wanted an XP machine, but it seems they no longer do them. I know that W7 Starter was supposed to be much more able to run in 1GB than full-up W7 - but I was still nervous.
Well, inevitably, the netbook hangs periodically - just becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. Given that it's pretty new, the only cause seems to me to be W7 thrashing around in too little memory.
So, what to do? I could upgrade the RAM to 2GB. It'll support that, and I've found a video of a guy doing it on YouTube. It doesn't look too painful - but I'm very nervous about pulling small PCs apart and putting them back together.
Alternatively, I could downgrade the netbook to XP. I'm well versed in installing XP - but the problem that occurs to me is the driver problem: if XP isn't supported on the machine, will I be able to identify and downlolad all the XP drivers I'll need? I've found a couple of very helpful sites, and I think it's do-able - although the sites refer to the slightly earlier model in the Acer Aspire range.
But before I take the plunge, I thought I'd ask the wizards of the forum what they'd do - or, in fact, if any of them has come across this problem before, and how they fixed it?
PS: a third option I'm thinking about is to dual boot the machine, which is easier to do when W7 is already installed than when XP is already installed. That way, unless I inadverte... Read more

I have a HP Mini 210 that came with 1Gb RAM and Win 7 Starter. It was slow. I upgraded to 2Gb RAM and Win 7 Home Premium with the result that it is a delight to use. It will never be a speed machine but it is perfectly useable. Personally I would upgrade the RAM first, try again and if you are still unhappy then revert to XP. I would be interested to read what others have done.

I recently upgraded my system's graphics card and processor to an FX 6300 with an R7 250X. I had some issues with my old OS, so I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro.

After these upgrades, I'm now getting various different BSOD's (Blue screen of death) upon boot and while using the machine. For example, NTFS_FileSystem_Error, Kernel_security_check_failure and several more which I cannot remember off the top of my head.

In addition to that, I get error messages on start-up for various different programs, sometimes Google Chrome fails to launch, and I'm unable to use any of the Windows Metro apps - they simply launch and then crash.
Iv'e got all the latest drivers, I've ran an HHD check within windows, and a RAM test using memtest86 and nothing abnormal was found. I can play games when I'm not getting BSOD's at solid FPS, which shows me that all of my new hardware is not at fault.
It's getting to the stage where I'm considering downgrading to Windows 7 again.

I'd appreciate any help that I can get on this. Thanks in advance. I can post anything else that would help you guys out with troubleshooting.

Hello, I'm looking for some advice please as my computer is broke and I'm stuck without it.
Last weekend it just stopped working, I used it in the morning with no problems then in the afternoon I turned it on and it wouldn't start up, long story short is I ended calling Dell and they have told me that my computer has automatically upgraded to Windows 10 but my Dell XPS 7100 isn't compatible with it, now I have no operating system at all!
I paid them £119 for a years support and another £30 for a Windows 7 ultimate disc which they say I'll receive tomorrow (Friday)
I use my computer for work as I'm self employed and need to prepare quotes and invoices etc for my customers, I've been all week without it now and am fuming that this has happened, I didn't even want Windows 10, why would it upgrade automatically? It's cost me a lot of time and has now cost me money and I don't even know if all my files will be there when it's working again.
Just thought to vent on here and see if anyone has any advice, I'm also not happy that I've had to pay for Windows 7 ultimate again as I already bought it once with my computer but it seems it was preloaded so I didn't get a disc which I now need to reinstall, Dell support said they will assist with the reinstall and then block Windows 10 from trying to do this again! Great now I feel under attack from the Windows 10 upgrade :-/

Answer:Windows 10 upgrade has deleted my operating system

Run your W7 disc and you will probably loose everything on your computer. I would wait and see what information that you get on here first.
In the meantime does your computer try to start or is it just dead.

Helping a friend on his Acer Aspire V5 laptop that was running an OEM Windows 8 to upgrade to 8.1.

After selecting the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 via the store, the system went through it's install procedure, however after it does an auto reboot, it gives you a blank screen with the message No Operating System found, in the upper left corner.

But, you can turn the machine off and back on, and it will boot just fine. However if you select restart it does the same thing "no operating system found", on restart and again you must power down and power back on.

I have searched for fixes, but all seem to point to some sort of re-install process. I am not to crazy about the idea of re-installing to factory settings or doing a repair back to Windows 8 and attempting to upgrade again, are their any known shorter fixes for this?

And if I do go back to Windows 8, and try to upgrade again, what is to say it won't happen again?

Answer:No Operating System found after Windows 8.1 upgrade

I upgraded my system from a 1.8GHz,3gig ram to I5 with 8gig ram, reloaded windows 7 and the damn thing's physical memory goes 80%+ and sometimes BSOD, any help to solve the problem?

Answer:BSOD after hardware upgrade and operating system reload

When you say to reloaded Windows 7, does that mean you re-booted Windows or re-installed Windows. If you reinstalled Windows 7 it was completely unnecessary for a RAM upgrade, Windows would have picked up the extra RAM without any intervention from you.The first thing to do is check them memory is properly seated and is compatible with you motherboard. Then run a memory check.

I hope this will help all the other user out there struggling to get their M.2 ssd to work with their HP Envy 17 laptops. I will give a step by step instructions on how to install and how allow the bios to recognize the m.2 ssd in slot 0, and how to install or run windows 10 off your m.2 ssd. 1. Download the latest updates from HP Envy from HP - I used Internet Download manager to download all the updates as of June 15, 2016. (Bios, drivers, software) 2. Install your M.2 ssd Boot into Windows - Right click on My Computer on your desktop and select Disk Management, and  Format Disk 0 If you want to do a clean install and you did not update your HP ENVY with the latest software and drivers this is the screen you will see when you try to intall Windows 10 on your m.2 ssd. The bios will not see the m.2 and will not allow you to select it in BOOT options.  Instead of doing a clean install, I highly recommend using the Samsung migrations software, it will clone your DISK 1 (2tb hard drive) to Disk 0 (m.2 ssd). After successfully migrating your Drive C to your M.2, when you reboot your m.2 ssd should kick in. Right click on My Computer on your desktop and select Disk Management, you will notice now that Drive 1 is offline, it will conflict with your m.2 ssd drive, don't worry, you can right click on disk one and select go online, you can then start to delete main partition, I have not yet figu... Currently my operating system isVista Service Pack 2 32 bit. How can Upgrade to Windows 8 or 10

I'm new here so pardon if there is any mistakes.

Anyhow I am currently using windows 7 (not a fan of windows 8). Since windows 10 is released I wanted to install and try it.
Initially I installed windows 8.1 in my D:\ drive (works normally as far as I can tell), and upgrade it to windows 10. I am keeping my windows 7 in drive C: as I do not have any other working computer if the installation failed.

So halfway upgrading from windows 8.1 to windows 10, the upgrade failed and a restart is needed. When restarting I tried to reset the installation but even that is failed. When restarted again there is no operating system in that drive (drive D: ) ??

Currently I tried to reformat my drive D: (windows 10) with my current windows 7 (installed in drive C) but it says the volume is in use by another process but it refused.
Drive C: - windows 7, still functioning properly
Drive D - where windows 8.1 is located and upgraded to windows 10 but failed, currently cannot detect any os when i boot from drive D: , and cant format the drive.

I know its really stupid and complicated the way i installed my windows 8.1 with my windows 7 intact, but I'm worried if the installation failed, I have no backup computer to fall back. Is there any suggestions that I can do?

Answer:Windows 10 crashed during Upgrade. Unable to detect operating system.

Try booting Windows 7 to Safe Mode (F8) then see if you can format D: from there. Do a quick format, full format is not needed.

Hey all! I am pretty new to this kind of Win7 issues, so I hope some of you will be able to help. Story goes...

After few hours of gaming the computer died. (It happened right after switching keyboards.) Now, on every setup BIOS(?) comes up with list of options (F2 enter BIOS, F11 boot options, F6 Flash etc.). After that a black screen with error message comes up: Missing Operating System.

I tried rebooting from USB (since I have no disk-drive) and I keep on getting the answer: Error Loading Operating System.

Any ideas?

Answer:Missing Operating System/Error Loading Operating System

All unlikely, but possible - (a) your HDD died. (b) your bios became corrupted (c) your HDD boot sector became corrupted (d) your HDD partition is corrupted.

Does the drive spin up when you switch on (feel it)?
Check the bios to see if the HDD is reported correctly and is at the top of the boot order.
Find a bootable CD - an OS installer, or create Easeus partition manager bootable CD and boot from it. What does the HDD look like with Easueus?

I have an old HP Pavilion 8260 that I got for free which is having some odd issues. Any time I try to boot, I get one of these 2 errors (first it was always Operating System Not Found, now it's Missing Operating System).

Here are the steps I've tried so far: I tried to boot from a floppy with a disk I know works; tried to boot off of the CD Rom; Tried disconencting everything except Floppy, CPU, and RAM; Tried resetting the BIOS by selecting "Set to Default" and by pulling out the CMOS battery (it was after doing this that it switched to the Missing OS error message).

The hard drive is dectected in the BIOS, as is the CD Rom and floppy drive. It properly recognizes the amount of RAM.

I am fresh out of ideas, even though I'm generally pretty good at this. If anyone else has any advice, it's greatly appreciated.

Hi all,

Installed a DVDRW drive but comp crashed when installing some software and it stopped detecting my Primary Master and Slave drives. I've fiddled about with the Master and Slave configs and have managed to get it to detect my HD and DVDROM.

I've unplugged my DVDRW and my small HDD and am trying to get windows to load up.

After using FDISK /MBR an rebooting, I get "Missing Operating System".

Tried installing Windows XP after formatting, it seems to have installed but it's not loading.

Current config:

Slave: Pioneer DVDROM (not the DVDRW)
Master: Seagate 80GB (C: = 15GB) & (D: = 61GB).

D: has files on there that I'd like to recover. Too big to put on floppy.

I've run a search for similar problems and tried some of the solutions but no good. Any ideas? Thanks

A full diagnostic test found no problems.

Hey guys:

I'm an idiot!!! Last night I deleted my System Volume Information folder off of a Raid-0 set of hard drives. As I mentioned, this raid set is not drive with my XP on it. This is just a drive for storage of pictures, video, and other programs I prefer not to have on my C:\. I did take go as far as to turn off System Restore before deleting it. Now when I boot up I cannot access the drive at all. It tells me that "The drive is not formatted. Do I want to format it now?."

I don't want to do that and I am wondering if there is a way to create a new System Volume Information folder so I can access the drive again???

Answer:Deleted System Volume Information Folder on a Non-Operating system drive???

I think you are connecting the dots...where there is no connection.

Deleting a system volume folder...isn't possible by me, even when system restore is not used (I always disable SR immediately after a clean install). Even though the folders are empty and I don't have SR employed, the system won't allow me to delete these empty folders.

I believe that the problem is your RAID setup...perhaps you ought to try to repair it.

If I change my operating system to linux and delete my old operating system entirely, will I be able to still use system restore to change my old operating system back?
Please help. All help is appreciated.

Answer:If I change my operating system to linux, can I still use windows' system restore?

The simple answer is no. If you remove an OS then you can not use it to do a restore because it is no longer there to run the restore program. What I would recommend would be to have a duel boot system.

When i start my pc, i get a 30 second count down to either choose an operating system or system restore. if i choose windows xp professional, everything is fine. when i choose restore point, i get "INF file textsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 14. setup cannot continue. press any key to continue".
choosing last known best settings hasnt changed this situation either.
basically i just dont want to see this screen, it prolongs the computer start up. i just got it today as a refurbed hp desktop from i tried system properties, advanced, startup settings and unchecked both boxes, as well as clearing the boot.iti file to no avail.
a rep at hp that was nice enough to just give me an opinion said i need the disk that came w the pc, which i obviously cant get. any ideas?
thank you so much for your time.

Answer:Choose operating system at startup-windows xp or system restore

You probably could purchase the disk from the manufacturer. They make a lot of money selling them to people.

Post the manufacturer & model of the computer, and verify the exact text of the message. That message is odd.

This morning I attempted to perform a system restore on my other computer. I legally own Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and was using the 3 system restore CDs provided by my manufacturer at the time I purchased the computer. If it matters, the computer is a Sony VAIO AMD Athlon.

I inserted the disk before booting up the computer, and everything seemed to go fine. The system restore screen loaded and I chose to do the recommended system restore, erasing all the files from my drive and restoring to the computer's original configuration.

It began performing the normal "Restoring Drive C:" operation. About 20 seconds into the restore, I received this error message:
Disk Access: Sense Operation Failed

I hit "Okay," the only button available. I then received a message saying the system restore failed and my operating system may not perform correctly (what an understatement). I removed the system restore CD and rebooted my computer. I now get an error message, "The operating system has failed to execute." I can't do anything, except try to do another system restore, in which I receive the same "sense operation failed" error from before.

I tried calling their tech support to which I was told (after waiting 20 minutes to speak to someone) that because my limited warranty had expired, I would have to pay $19.99 per call to have it fixed. Yeah, right. Neither Sony nor Microsoft's online tech support pages were at all helpfu... Read more

Answer:XP system restore failure... operating system failed to execute

I would guess that your CD is scratched or unreadable for some reason or that the CD Rom isn't reading properly. Give it a good wiping.
I would just format and reload XP if you have a fully licensed disk. Takes 39 minutes or less and you'll have a nice clean install and you get to start over. However....... if you have only restore disks I am unsure as to whether you can do an install from them.

I just had a new hard drive installed on my computer by professionals due to hard drive failure and after re-installing my software from CD/DVD backups seem to be having similar problems as in the past. I may have some software/hardware conflicts.

The Help and Support seems to be loading VERY slow. I had problems with this previously. (see earlier threads and attachments). The was not happening after my initial re-installation so some of my software or other changes made are causing this.

I have a Windows XP Pro DELL computer from June 2004. I brought my computer to professionals and a diagnostics indicated a "failing" hard drive (Maxtor). I had a new 120 GB drive installed by them and had them re-install Windows XP.

I re-installed Norton Internet Security 2006 with ONLY their firewall running.(LiveUpdate was run too) I did not install Zone Alarm free due to compatiblity problems. I did install Windows Defender but was told not to run it with Norton due to possible compatiblity problems. After using Microsoft Update to get Service Packs and other updates I re-installed most of my programs from CD's DVD's..

I had other problems when trying to reinstall Microsoft Office '97. My Outlook Express was replaced with Microsoft Outlook. (I should have done a custum install)

I do remember that about this time I also turned off some services that I did not seem to need in MSCONFIG. I have since turned those services back on and re-installed MS Of... Read more

I installed a Windows XP Home Edition SP2 in my Windows XP Professional Edition. When my computer restarted I saw that I have 2 operating systems. I realized my mistake, so I did a system restore on Windows XP Pro. I had set it before I installed Win XP Home. When I restarted again, it then boot in Windows XP Pro.

While I was using the computer, it gave a warning that I was low of space. So I had my disk clean up. Then I did the Disk Defragmenter, it said I only had 14% of space and it wont be able to defragment because it needs at least 15%.

Is the Win XP Home still there? Or did the system restore delete it? If it's still there how can I delete it? What do I do?

I have been reading the forums and it seems that my win7 desktop has an issue with the system restore virus/worm/trojan. I was searching the web for information on teens huffing chemicals using Firefox & Google search. One of the pages began playing some annoying video, when I went to close it out I was presented with the same windows and warnings described in this post

normally I would not post on forums concerning issues such as this. I prefer to find the fix myself but the malware seems to have taken itself to a new level on my desktop. I cannot even get F8 to work. The computer launches the MSI screen that offers the press delete to get to the bios and tab to switch to post but only the delete button works then if I let it load all of the way I just get a back screen with the little DOS line flashing but I cannot type anything onto the screen. The only keys that seem to work are control alt delete to restart the computer.

I have been reading through a lot of posts on these forums concerning this issue but have been unable to find one quite the same as my present situation. It would be great to be able to save the information on the hard drive but I just spent a year in Korea and while I was gone my wife misplaced the backup and start-up disks for the desktop.

Is there any hope or should I just trash the hard drive and start over with the desktop?

Thank you

While doing some heavy video work, I managed to overheat my system spectacularly, resulting in the smell of burning plastic, all my fans going at 100%, all lights on the PC going off and all buttons becoming unresponsive.
I pulled the side off to see what was going on and found a desert of dust in there. Possibly somewhat foolishly now that I think about it, I left it running with all the fans roaring away and directed my desk fan inside the case while I went and got the vacuum cleaner and an air sprayer and got most of the dust out. (Still with the system running. No, I didn't touch anything while doing this. The vacuum was held well out of the case, just to suck up the dust cloud.)
I then rebooted it and it died in exactly the same way soon after. Through subsequent repeated crashes, I have established that it goes off at roughly 1 minute and 42 seconds after the "Do you wish to enter Safe Mode?" screen is dismissed. Any delays (such as being in the BIOS) prior to and on that screen do not affect the timing.
Very oddly, safe mode works perfectly, and I can't see the bios complaining anywhere (not that I am remotely familiar with the BIOS.)
I have tried:
Booting normally - crashes
Booting into Windows Recovery - crashes
Booting into an Ubuntu LiveCD - crashes
Resetting the BIOS - no change
Taking the top fan off the CPU heatsink and removing the cubic meter of dust somehow compressed within the fins - The BIOS reported the CPU running 30C cooler than ... Read more

I am trying to do a system recovery back to the original condition and I have taken what I need to save. Applications and Drivers dvd). Operating system is Windows XP professional on a HP laptop.

I have completed the following steps. Can any one tell me if I am doing the right thing?
1)I put in the operating system cd and shut down the computer.
2) I started it back up useing the cd (by hitting any button when it asks).
3) I press Enter on the next menu to "set up windows xp now"

B) create a partition in the unpartitioned space

Answer:Question about using Operating System CD for system recovery

Yes, you can delete the partition; then create a new one in the same space and format it and continue the installation. The warning you see is just that you are about to delete the partition containing the current XP. The drivers CD will have everything additional you'll need, but after you regain internet access you may want to download from HP's web site and install the up-to-date drivers.

im looking to upgrade my desktop from an xp to 7. system builders are very cheap which concerns me. What is the difference from a system builder and the regular version

Answer:system builder vs. regular operating system

Ok basic difference is that the system builder (OEM) is supposed to be sold with hardware only.

Other differences.
1. Retail windows can be removed from one computer and put on another legally.
2 System builder is tied to the Motherboard and is not allowed to be moved by Microsoft. I have in the past had to call in on a OEM where the motherboard went and was discontinued to get them to activate with the new hardware.
3. System builder will not upgrade VISTA like the upgrade version will do, It will do a clean install always except that it will do a upgrade of itself if started from within windows. Sort of like a repair install. If you boot off of it, it will only do a clean install and will offer to move your old windows and users folders to a windows.old directory.

That is the main differences off of the top of my head.

So nothing wrong with the system builder version for a new computer, It is what I used.

One other thing you will have to reinstall all your software and settings when you go from XP to Windows 7 as they do not do upgrades that retain those things even the upgrade version will move your old windows and do a clean install.

Good Luck

I used to think that there was something up with the 'system' file running in processes because it often times dials out to something when I'm connected to the net.

Before my fresh reinstall and putting in COMODO 4, I attempted to block system but it gets to the point where after system has tried to get through for several days the computer stops functioning properly.

So this time I left system alone but COMODO, through it's own default set up, has been blocking something called 'system' and 'windows operating system' which persistently knocks at my firewall.

So I am asking, is COMODO, through it's own default instict, in the right by blocking these?

And if these are trojans, where can I find and delete them? My scanners don't pick up the files and COMODO will not show a path to the files that are making these attempts on my firewall.

Answer:System / Windows Operating System - COMODO

Hello everyone,

I am trying to do a system restore from the install disc because I can't boot. I followed this tutorial: System Recovery Options using method two. At step 5, the only operating system listed is Vista (which I don't have and never have had). If I select it and try to continue, it tells me that that version of windows is not compatible with the install dvd I am using. If I try to continue without selecting Vista, it tells me I have to select an OS. I have also tried startup repair to no avail.

Background information: This is on my early '08 Macbook Pro. I was using windows 7 professional x64 through boot camp. A few weeks ago after updating virus definitions for AVG, windows would no longer boot. I found that it was an issue with the update and that a system restore would solve the problem. Unfortunately, I can't get system restore to work properly.

I would appreciate any help. Happy Holidays!

Hi I started my PC up today and as it boots up in goings into the Windows setup program rather than the usual sequence. It also gave a 0198 Security - Unauthorized BIOS update attempted which I have now sorted out as per the Lenovo web-site. Does anyone know why the system thinks it must set up Windows? Thanks

Answer:System wants to reinstall Windows operating system

I'm not sure what you mean by "Windows setup program", but if your PC is trying to boot into PXE, then check to make sur eyour mouse and keyboard are securely connected. In fact, I'd suggest removing and re-installing. The last M50 IBMs I used were setup in the BIOS so that if there wasn't a keyboard attached, it would try to PXE boot rather then booting from the HDD. This is because that's the sequence that was selected for an "error boot" in the BIOS. Hope this helps!

I have had my Dell 8700 for little over a year and have had problems from the beginning.  I am 72 years old, and I am at my wits end!!!

A hard drive was replaced in the summer of 2015, but I have still had problems with the computer shutting down and my having to refresh it to factory setting.

I thought updating to Windows 10 would solve some problems, and I did this in October, 2015.  Everything was fine until a couple of months ago.  The end result was when I tried to refresh the computer to factory defaults, it went back to 8.0 or 8.1, and I evidently lost something in the process.
Now, I cannot update to Windows 10 and when I tried to resinstall the Dell Operating System, I get for both:  "WE COULDN'T UPDATE THE SYSTEM RESERVED PARTITION."
I DO HAVE A SYSTEM BACKUP ON 20 CDS (MADE WHEN I HAD WINDOWS 10).  Could I reinstall the system with these backupdisks?  How do I do that?  I also have a Dell 2 Boot USP stick, I have a recovery stick, too, but it semed that when I used this, I received a message that not all files were recovered
What should I do at this point?

Answer:Error message when trying to update to Windows 10 or to reinstall operating system 8.1: We couldn't update the system reserved partition."

On MBR disk, Windows 10 requires a 500MB system reserved partition, while 100MB in Windows 7, so you can try to extend system reserved partition.
In disk management, you can only extend partition using the unallocated space next to its right side. so even if you shrink D: drive, the option to extend the efi partition is still grayed out. My suggestion is to use a third party software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, both the standard (free) or the Professional(paid) version can extend partition as long as there is unallocated space on that hard drive. to see more information read:

My computer spec is as under:
1 Intel Core2 quad Q6600 2.40GHZ CPU;
2. 3 GB of RAM - DDR2;
3. ASUS P5QPL-AM mother board;
As for as I know 2GB of RAM is the minimum requirement for 64 bit system. Correct me if I am wrong please.
All that I wanted to install 64bit Windows8 preview on the 2nd partition of HD along side 32bit windows 7 which failed because of incompatibility. I did install 32bit successfully.
Any idea please?

You don't say which 64 bit OS (W7 or XP) you are installing but the installer will check and is generally correct.

Answer:Which operating system can i use...

Don't see why you couldn't try W8. The amount of RAM installed will make a big difference.
The graphics card will also affect performance.

Answer:operating system

Sounds like your hard drive is buggered.

I suggest going into the bios and looking to see if the drive is recognized, if it is the i'd get a livecd of Ubuntu and booting to it and see if the drive is accessible in it.

Question: Operating System

I have recently purchased a new computer and gave the T2385 to a friend who was running an ancient computer(desktop with 30 GB hard drive and 733 mhz processor). He had it for about two months and then got an "lsass.exe system failure" and it would sit there and basically recycle the reboot screens and give the same error. Nothing worked! not even the reboot disc. I managed to get around that issue and got the computer back to the point where it could read the reboot disc, but I got about 68% complete on the reboot disc and it gave me another error. Now it is saying the operating system is not found! Is there a fix I can get for this issue?

Thanks for the assist,

Answer:Operating System

If it is still restarting you can turn of the system failure restart,

Right click my computer
Under system failure uncheck automatically restart.

I know this doesnt solve the problem but it will stop it restarting so that you can try and find out what is wrong with it. I wll look around and get back to you.

Question: Operating system

I have read that the OptiPlex 745 has not tested for Windows 10 and might not perform correctly if installed. I did  not know and installed Windows 10. The computer is extremely slow about loading websites. I don't want to run system restore on Windows 10. Has Dell come up with any kind of update for that situation?

Okay, so yesterday around 11 am my computer asked me to update my internet explorer, so I clicked okay. After that a "Security Tool" scam thing uploaded on my computer and said that I had all these viruses and tried to get me to give them my information and junk and it would take care of the problem. I read a couple of things on how to get rid of the virus and after a couple of hours it seems to have totally screwed up my whole computer. Now, when I restart it with my Windows 7 installation, it says I have no Operating System. I can get into the BIOS menu but, that doesn't seem to help. What can I do?

Answer:No Operating System?

You should have a recovery partition and you were probably asked about creating recovery disks when you first started using it (most do not). Check your manual, there should be a specific 'F' key to press while booting to access the recovery partition. This will bring you back to your original new condition so if you need to save any files, you should do this first. You should be able to save your files using a Live Linux CD and save to a USB drive.

Question: Operating System

I want to install Norton Ghost, but I need to know more about my operating system. I have Windows XP Home, how do I find out if it is SP2 or later?

Answer:Operating System

My Computer>Properties under the "General" tab.

If you haven't already paid for it, XX Clone does (I think) a better job and it's free. You need a second HD, though.

Okay big problem.

My computer has 2 partitions, one that is about 130 gigs and one that is 10 gigs.

I have XP installed on the first one and I tried to use Partition magic to merge the two partitions and it told me I needed to restart.

I tried windows solutions from of some of the recovery console commands with no luck, so out of frustration im installing XP on the smaller partition to see if I can somehow recover my data. Its installing okay, but is there any way im going to be able to recover my old partition and merge the two together somehow?

Second XP installation is installed and the other partition appears to be intact *thank god*

Here's what my goal is:

I've already failed at this several times and I had to call microsoft cause i activated windows too much..

I want to make the larger partition the primary partition again, this way i dont have to activate again or transfer files back and forth. they're all backed up though.

delete the partition of the xp installation i just created.

merge the two partitions.

ANY help is greatly appreciated. thanks again

I have heard that it is possible to boot from a cd which has the full operating system ( Win 98 )on it, ie no HDD, is this correct if yes , anyone knows how to make creat the cd. Thanks

Answer:operating system on Cd....

Yes, you can boot from the CD but only so far as to be able to install Win98 onto the hdd. I don't think that you can run a Windows OS from such a CD. But you can run some Linux Distros from CD.
