Is end-of-life Vista more dangerous than end-of-life XP ?

Question: Is end-of-life Vista more dangerous than end-of-life XP ?

I am wondering if end-of-life Vista is more dangerous than end-of-life XP. My reasoning is that Vista more closely resembles Win 10 than XP. So as MS was saying, attackers may reverse engineer patches meant for recent OS's into exploits that work on the end-of-life one. So it seems to me that Vista looks more dangerous than XP.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have had my T430 since August of 2012 at the start of college. I am currently running windows 8.1 pro and I recently just noticed my battery life issues and after installing lenovo settings I discovered that my battery's capacity is at 27% of the original capacity. The battery life is really bad, e.g. it says 15 minutes remaining at 25% on POWER SAVER mode.  I have google this and it said to "reset my battery" but unfortunately 8.1 Lenovo power manager doesn't have that feature.  I am just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what to do?  Will I just have to get a new battery?

Answer:Lenovo T430 Battery Life 1+ hour on life saver

you would have to have a pre-Windows 8 OS to gain that crucial battery reset function. This is one reason why i dislike running Win 8 on ThinkPad.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

1.Prolonging battery life-cycle by the "do not charge when battery charge is above nn% which by default is 96%. How about setting it manually to much smaller value. 50%-60%. Would that prolong batterly life-cycle? (When I dont want to charge the battery)2. All parameters set to small values for using as little energy as possible for extending the time when nly battery power is available: The temperature is still (far too) high underneath where (center-center) the ventilation gaps are. How come? The only process take CPU-power is logmon.exe from IBM/Lenovo...3. Logmon.exe is alway running at about 15% CPU... How can I change that?4 Is the screen background light gas-filled? If so, will the life-cycle shorten if it turns on/off to frequently? (Light timeout value to low)Thank you IBM/Lenovo for this site.Regards,

Answer:Battery life and charge-cycle. Background light life-cycle.

1)  See and follow the hints and tips of the Battery University2) Look at the Z60m part list or into the HMM in order to detect which parts/components are sitting there, this will give you some hint what parts might get heated up a lot near the thermal device.3) AFAIK logmon.exe is part of or belongs to ThinkVantage rescues & recovery. - If it runs as a service on your OS, then you can disable that service or maybe you can just change the scheduling times for that monitor service inside r & r. A look into the r & r manual, which can be found on Lenovo's website, might can tell you more about this.4) Look for yourself here, CCFL backlights for notebooks have usually a life time of 15.000 till 30.000 hours. Yes in practise the life-time will shorten, but this is common for all electronic devices over time.

This topic is targeted at Vista users mainly who may visit here only for Vista support.
On April 11, 2017 support for Vista will officially end meaning that there will be no more security updates, no more official support from Microsoft period and you will be left with a unsecure OS.
I highly doubt Vista will get the same lifeboat that XP has as XP is still unofficially supported.
So what will a vista user do, for me there are three answers I can give you who are not sure what to do next after vista stops being supported:
1: Try Linux
Now I know what you are going to say "What is Linux?"
Linux is a alternative operating system to windows and unlike buying a copy of windows again Linux is free to use and try.
Its tragic that the mainstream user doesnt know what it is but yes there is another OS out there that doesn't conform to Microsoft or apple.
The easiest Linux i can recommend that will be on par with vista in terms of interface is Linux Mint
Its current incarnation is 18.1 and comes in two main flavors, MATE and Cinnamon plus there are other interfaces offered like KDE and XFCE.
All of these options seem confusing I know but each one of these choices offers something for someine.
KDE and Cinnamon are more for people who like a more modern look and feel while MATE and XFCE are more for older hardware.
If your Vista machine caan run its graphics then KDE and Cinnamon would be the best option

Question: Life after Vista

Hi forum,
Have just had a "clean" install of Windows 7 from the Upgrade disc and I am just going to air my comments.
I decided to let a technician do the job for me in spite of all the good advice from the forum about how to do it. It went a treat, thankfully and only cost a few euros.
First impressions....hated the garish backgrounds and finally settled for a nice even deep blue screen. First hiccup..back-up from Vista failed but I had luckily put a lot of music, financial reports and pictures onto a memory stick two months ago. I have lost a couple of month's reports, however but I can guess at the figures. Like new shoes (or dentures) 7 takes some getting used to and I had to hunt for some drivers too. To tell the truth I should have gladly re-installed Vista at this stage (I still have it on a recovery partition) but I think I was getting a little cloudy in my thinking and not relaxing into the system more.
A couple of hours later I am absolutely delighted with the system and the speed at which it operates is amazing (particularly after Vista) and I dare say, as the technician told me, that,in a week or so, the whole thing will grow on me. I have still a lot to learn about it yet. So the future looks bright after a rather strange start to the change.

Answer:Life after Vista

Peter, you know me and how the forum works. Ask as many questions as you like and soon you will be a great fan of Seven, like myself.

My battery life has been cut in half with the installation of vista.
Whats that program called for laptop power management? I think im gonna try it..

Answer:Vista and battery life

Did you disable the original power management in order to run the laptop at "full speed"?

SpeedStep or C'nQ work fine in Vista. I've used Vista Beta 2/RC1 on both Intel and AMD laptops. Many video drivers have performance profiles for AC and battery operation.

It is likely to lose battery time with Vista with Aero enabled, but with standard power saving it's not very much.

I don't know if it's just me or what, but after running Vista on my notebook, I've taken a substantial loss to battery life. In XP, with brightness at 30% I would get a soild 2.5 to 3.0 hours of battery life. With Vista, running in power saver mode, with 30% brightness and my max CPU utilization set to 35% and min set to 5% I might get 1.75 hours MAX, the norm being around 1.5 hours.

I haven't changed how much I use my notebook, and normally the wireless is switched off.

My notebook is a Core Duo T2500, 2GB Ram, 100GB HDD, ATI X1600 Mobility with built in wireless and a six cell battery (largest it can take).

I don't know if it's me, if I've messed up some settings somewhere, of if Vista is just really bad at power management? I really love the operating system, and this is the only problem I really have with it. I really do not feel like going back to XP, and carrying around 2 batteries only to get a max of three hours of life from my notebook really sucks.

Anyone else have similar problems or have great battery life? I'm really stumped.

Hello everyone. I'm a new guy, and mostly looking for a quick fix to what I hope should be a simple problem.
For nostalgia purposes I'm trying to play the notoriously bug-ridden game Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. Trying to install it, however, I'm treated to the message "Program requires Windows NT 4.0 service pack 3 or higher". Now from what little I know about this, it seems like my brand new laptop should probably have "higher", right?
Does anyone know what's going on here, and how to fix it?

Answer:The Meaning of Life on Vista

Windows Vista and Windows NT are different OS platforms.
Even though Vista has alot of NT in it, it will not run NT software straight out of the box.
Look at the manual for the game to find what OS work with it.
It will probable not mention windows 95, ME or any similar OS.

The problem is that if you add all of these subjects to the 'helproom' that forum will be so big that most subjects will be hidden on page two within an hour or so.I was a bit disappointed to see that the powers that be decided that 'Mobile world' was a more important forum than Linux. Apparently microsoft has said it will be limiting the number of machines to which vista can be transferred to just one. Apparently, computers now have longer life-spans, so you are unlikely to want to upgrade your PC after switching to vista until the next operating system comes out.Now if that also includes upgrading components then I,d at best get 8 months use for my £190 and at worst 6_7 weeks, i,m constantly upgrading something or other. No Value. In the 3 or so years I,ve had XP my PC has totally changed and I just reactivate each time it asks.If F.E. can shed any light on this I,d be appreciative.

Both desktop and laptop can access the internet just fine. Both are set up for file and printer sharing with the firewalls currently disable while trying to figure this mess out. Both have the MSHOME set as the workgroup.

I verified that the Computer Browser, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Network Connections, Network Location Awareness, Remote Procedure Call, Server, and Workstation are started and set to automatic for both laptop and desktop.

I'm researching going from XP pro to Vista x64, primarily because I've picked up some new ram at the recently cheap pricing.

Why is it still so difficult to decide to go 64-bit, and also to pick a Vista brand (home, premium, etc.)? If I go 64-bit there are all these warnings about what software might or might not work. What's with the stupid 32-bit ram limits in this day and age? For the money that Microsoft brings in you'd think they could have planned this better, or just plain do a better job. And the prices; what bull.

Should I stay with my XP Pro, where I'm happy as a lark, or switch to Vista x64, and spend weeks or months tweeking the rig, just to realize 4gb?

Answer:Vista x64, Ram Limits & the meaning of Life.

There is a RAM (correct term memory address space) limitation because in a 32bit system you ONLY have 2^32 possible addresses.

Sure you can use PAE to expand on this to 64Gig BUT for some reason MS decided not to allow that (yes there is a slowdown as you need to page between the different 4gig banks but... for servers and such.)

For performance and full bandwidth you need extra memory address lines and thus 64bit is needed. Its not some great conspiracy, its simple maths&engineering

HOWEVER 64bit on windows is different to say... 64bit on linux due to the number of apps that are actually 64bit compiled, is this of concern? kinda
1) as opose to a 100% 64bit system (/me loves his gentoo setup), in a system with a 64bit OS, but 32apps you end up loading effectively the same libs/apps twice (the 64bit version and the 32bit versions)
2) if you end up having a load of RAM but for some stupid reason expect said RAM/mem-map to be exposed to a 32bit application you are very much mistaken. A 32bit app can only address 2^32 lines (in practice 3.5Gig) so if you have 8gig of RAM its a waste

just some thoughts. If you want 64bit OS go for it, if not don't. Simple as that

Does the laptop have two harddrives or partitions? If so, you may have Steam installed on the OS partition or similar, which usually has very little free space.

I put this on a hardware forum, but I think it might be vista related.

Well here's the scoop. I have, what I thought was, A very good system. Unfortunetly games keep on crashing. HL2, Supreme Commander, you name it, it seems to crash. I get Runtime Errors. Sometimes that my memory is full. Game freezes. And sometimes the whole thing just exits. (not to mention that vista keeps crashing explorer and I find myself constantly having to restart the explorer.exe application. I'm running the 64-bit version of ultimate just for reference. My brother, who has a much less powerful system does not have the FPS problems that I have. For instance, playing Garry's Mod on HL2 if I'm facing away from the action I'll be getting close to 300 fps, but when I turn towards the minimal stuff going on I'll get 9fps while my brother on his stock dell (not even an XPS) gets maybe 25 to 30. Also for some reason or another my ping will shoot up at the same time.

All in all I'm pretty p.o'ed that I spent this money on quality parts and nothing seems to be working right. and yes i've updated drivers reinstalled... reformated. The computers sees all my equipment, recognizes my 8 gig of ram and my two video cards (SLI does do the much extra when I turned it on)

Thanks for any help in getting my system to live up to what it's made up of.

-- Network and sharing Center : Locks up completely on open - can't even close it, it just sits there, spinning mouse cursor and all, giving me hackey looks.
-- Windows date and time locks up when trying to synchronise.
-- Tried to install adaware search and destroy earlier, windows installer decided to crash and is currently still stuck "cancelling".
-- Windows sidebar crashes on startup.

Please advise what I can do -- reinstalling the OS is NOT an option, neither is booting from the disk - the laptop no longer has a CD drive.

EDIT: Windows Defender refuses to start, as does rstrui (system restore -- although it wouldn't help anyway, apparently it thinks it only has 3 restore points now, all within the last week.)

Ok fellas I don't know where to begin, I have been batteling this problem for the last 16 hours and tried everything that I can think of and still nothing, and I can't realy pinpoint the problem (new to Vista and not so tech savy to begin with) to know where I should be looking and what to search for on google.

A couple of months ago I purchased a brand new Laptop, Toshiba Satellite P200-144 ( Link with full specs) runing on Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 32bit (6.0, Build 6000).

I would have posted a DXDIAG Log file to further help you assist me, but for reasons explained below, I can't:(

I didn't have a single problem with it after this morning, now, I'm a heavy torrents user with a slow connection so my Laptop is on almost 24/7, but this morning I decided to reboot it just in case, haven't installed any new software or updates that required a reboot, and after that all the problems started.

First the Sidebar failed to load and gave an error message along the lines of "sidebar.ini file could not be found or is in use by another program" then when I tried launching Firefox (, it gave me an error message saying that "Firefox is already runing but not responding. to open a new window you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system"

so I did that, again, sidebar didn't load and the problem with FFX was still unsolved, so I opened up the Task Manager, no instances of firefox were runing.

I recently upgraded my HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop (dv6815nr to be exact) from Vista Home Premium to 7 Home Premium and I can't say for sure but I believe my laptop's battery is working a bit better and longer.

At first, I thought it drained quicker than when Vista was installed but I think I was just speculating, especially since I hadn't had a good night's rest in a few days.

I'm very curious as to whether any laptop users, who have switched from Vista straight to the official release of Win 7, have noticed an improvement in battery life/performance?

As you may be aware, there are a number of Microsoft Windows versions which will go out of support during the coming year. We want to help customers avoid the risk of running unsupported products in their environment.

Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server are approaching 10 years since their launch and both products will go out of support on July 13, 2010.

Windows XP was launched back in 2001. While support for the product will continue, Service Pack 2 will go out of support on July 13, 2010. From that date onwards, Microsoft will no longer support or provide free security updates for Windows XP SP2. Please install the free Service Pack 3 for Windows XP to have the most secure and supported Windows XP platform.

Finally, Windows Vista with no Service Packs installed will end support on April 13 2010. Please install the free Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista to have the most secure and supported Windows Vista platform.

I have a dual boot T400 (2768-AA6) which can boot either windows XP SP3 or Vista x64 business. Battery is the 6 cell. I have all the most recent drivers installed. Currently, on the same power manager configuration, i am getting 1.5-2 hours of battery life less on the vista compared to xp. I could at most squeeze 3.5hrs in vista (with processor and screen brightness set to minimum), while on xp i can comfortably achieve 4-5 hours. Activities that i do are approx the same, web-surfing, some word processing. Experience are all with integrated graphics. I turned off superfetch in vista. Is it because x64 instructions are less effecient? or are there any problems with the drivers? Or am i just an anomally? Please share your battery life experience with vista 64.

Answer:Battery life reduced when running vista x64

Hello, Do you have Windows Aero turned on? It's known to be mainly attributabe to a decrease in battery runtime.

Appreciate if people could start to post their respective battery lifes with basic info on the typical battery life, OS, battery configuration, Power profile and screen brightness they are using.  Like to see if Visa or Windows 7 is working better  Battery Life: 4.5 hoursOS: Windows 7 64 bitBattery Config: 6 cell plus slim 3 cell dvd batteryPower profile: balancedScreen Brightness:  max

Answer:X301 Battery Life Comparison between Vista and Windows 7.

you are getting 4.5 hours from 9 cells? that's terrible. it was for that reason i downgraded to xp. actually your numbers match my experience under vista. i thought it was joke when i first booted up the machine and found the 3 cell battery fully charged but only got 90 minutes from it. i won't even say what i think of lenovo's claim of 'up to 3.45 hours' from the 3 cell battery. anyway, it looks like windows 7 is just as bad as vista. under xp with wireless on, bluetooth off, my numbers look like this for 6 cells: Battery Life: 5 hoursOS: xp proBattery Config: 3 cell main + 3 cell bayPower profile: balancedScreen Brightness: -4 i actually just got the 6 cell battery yesterday after owning the machine for almost a year now. i'll post my results for the full 9 cells later, but my initial experience would lead me to believe it is going to be somewhere near 7.5 hours. Message Edited by redwood01 on 06-12-2009 09:15 AM

I got a message when i loaded my account (have vista) that said there were problems with the HL2 engine. So I tried to load Garrys Mod, HL2, and CSS and everytime i do while it loads the screen goes black and it says powering safe mode and it keeps saying that every 15 seconds. Hello all. I have recently downgraded my X200T from Vista to XP and RAM extension from 2GB to 4GB , and one of the problems that I am facing is a considerably shortened battery life. It used to be nearly 6 hours in Energy Star but now it is merely 3 hours at its full charge. I am not sure whether it is caused by the OS downgrade, or RAM extension, so I am here for some advice. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dramatically Shortened Battery Life since Downgrade from Vista to XP, and RAM extension

I triple boot (Vista/XP/Ubuntu) and notice substantial variation in battery life between operating systems. On Vista I can get under 6 watts with light usage (?10 hours)The same settings/usage under XP ? 7.5 watts.Under Ubuntu, I have never seen it drop below 10 watts. Therefore, I would say a substantial portion of the change in battery life is OS related.  However, the difference shouldn't be that dramatic (10-20%, but not 50%). The extra RAM module will slightly reduce battery life as well, but it should be minor.  I don't think a DDR3 module can use more than 0.5 watts. May I ask why you downgraded to XP (especially if you have 4GB of RAM)?  Because I find Vista to be quite stable and useful on the x200 Tablet

No further security updates or patches will be issued by Microsoft

You are strongly advised to update to SP3 & not use W2K on the net at all

Question: Is XP for life?

I'm a longtime and active user of windows 2000 - I use two pcs, one for games and films, and the other for more mundane stuff like internet, printing etc.
Yesterday, I was offered a secondhand copy of windows xp and given that xp is a little more flexible than W2K, I told the buyer that I might be interested but need to clear one or two things up-

1) is it true that xp HAS to be registered?

2) can I install the same os on my two computers?

3) only one of my computers is hooked up to the net as I don't want both computers filled to the hilt with numerous drivers and internet related software so the games computer wont be able to access the web - would I have a problem with this?

4) I've been told that microsofts policy is one pc, one xp operating system for life - this being the case, should I actually be buying secondhand?

Answer:Is XP for life?

1) Individually bought XPs (regular and OEM alike) have to be registered.
If you get it with a new PC, like a Dell, you can, but don't have to, as Dell etc. have a so-called volume-license.

2) You can, but without registering, they will both stop working after 30 days.
Re-installing from scratch every 30 days is not a viable option.

3) Not being hooked up to the internet means, you don't get any updates.

4) You can install any OS an any PC.
If you have one XP (let's say with registration code 123), install that and register it, fine.
Get another XP (say with reg-code 456), you can install that on the PC with XP-123 on it, provided you wipe the PC first and do a clean install from scratch.
When registering XP-456 it will look like another PC to MS, even if it is the same hardware.

(But why would you want to buy TWO heaps of sh.., one is bad enough already).

Stay with Windows 2000 (like me). A whole load less problems, and SP5 is in the making already, so W2K will be supported for a while to come yet.

seem to figure out how to find my graphics card. Nor my sound card.

I am not a genius when it comes to computers, but I know more than the average person. My brother hooked me up with a computer and after having to reinstall the OS (XP) because of problems.. I now have an operating computer (with no sound). Along with no sound (because the computer does not seem to 'know' the sound card), the computer's refresh rate is horrific because it's using the default generic video driver.

I figure updated the drivers of the video card will fix this. However, I cannot find the graphics card in dxdiag (it shows nothing by the Name: as well as for the sound card). So after not being able to find anything using dxdiag, I tried using msinfo32 for the system information.. but it gives me information on everything but those two (all blank).

I am sure my computer will 'recognize' and fill in those blanks on dxdiag once the drivers are updated, but how do I know which drivers to get??

Any help is much appreciated.

PS. nothing by Device Manager either.

Hi,My Liteon CD-RW has died a death - refuses to read anything. :-(I thought the lifespan of these devices would be more than 2 years - that's how long I have had it, a lousy 2 years! Something must be wrong here surely...?Comments?Tj_El

Answer:What should the life of a CD-RW be?

The longevity of a rewriter is not as high as that of a CD/DVD-ROM type drive - that's why I always recommend that a rewriter is used for the sole task of burning.Manufacturers, even those that rebadge other makles' products, usually indicate the anticipated minimum life span of their drives. But there's no average - one drive might last 18 months, another two years and a third pack up in the first year.My first CD-RW drive was a TDK Velox 12x10x24 (actually a rebadged Plextor, one of the best makes around), which packed up within four months despite minimal use.TDK replaced it and that auffered exactly the same problem after a few weeks; the replacement for the second proved to be a TDK CyClone with 24x write speed as the Velox had been discontinued.Price of the orignal rewriter was £68 - the then new CyClone was £189 at dabs...:-) TDK didn't make any money (the two earlier ones went back to its Luxembourg HQ and back at TDK's expense), but the customer service was fantastic.Thankfully the CyClone is still doing sterling service.

I've been happily using IE8 as my default browser on my Windows XP machine for many years now. I tried Firefox for a long while, but always had to go back to IE for some web sites, such as doing an internet check-in for a flight, because the site wouldn't respond to input via Firefox. Last year I ditched Firefox because it clashed with some of my other software after an update.
Now I'm beginning to find more problems with IE8: First there's the running script problem with this site; then on another of my favourite forums it keeps going back to the top of the page, instead of where I left off, when I go back from reading or contributing to a particular thread; and lastly, since about a week ago I can no longer get local weather and news on the BBC News web site -- the site prompts me to input my postcode but doesn't respond to my input.
So now I'm trying Google Chrome, and so far it's not causing the three issues mentioned. Should I also be moving on from XP to 7, or should I wait for the next Windows that works with PCs that don't have touch-screens?

Answer:Has IE8 come to the end of its useful life?

I've used Google Chrome for years. On the rare occasion I've had to use IE I've been frustrated by its slowness. It takes ages to load and sits around for ages waiting for pages to load in.
I still use XP on my desktop and Win 7 on my laptop, and I think I still prefer XP.

I was working on the web using tabs, when suddenly it started to create dozens of tabs, going bezerk and out of control.

I crashed my PC on the power button and started again. All went OK until it should have shown my desktop. Instead a blue screen came up saying that a disc check was necessary. Never seen anything like this in all my life. I let it go into the disc check, it took a very long time checking mostly File 9 and inserting indexes for several minutes. It went on and on, I thought it would never stop.

I went to have a smoke for 10 minutes, came back and it had finished. Told me to wait and it logged onto Windows automatically. Everything then went as normal as if it was yesterday and up came my desktop and I opened my browser with no problems, just like nothing had ever happened.

As far as I can see now, I am back to normal after the unexpected freak show.

Can one of our experts please tell me what the hell all that was about ?

Answer:Second life

What Windows version you using and what graphic card do you have?

As if its asking for 32bit colour then its very likely that you need to update your graphic card driver to latest version, sadly if your using the likes of Intel GFX then this may not be possible.

So let us know your PC make and model if bought from the likes of HP, Sony, Dell etc?

Question: CD life

For years, I've been hearing that CDs you burn have a life of about 5 years before degrading. That's coming true. I burned a bunch of music CDs around 2001 and now I'm having to start throwing them away because they're becoming mostly static. I've also heard that the rate of degradation (and whether they degrade or not) depends on the kind of CD you're using. What are the specs for a really good blank CD?

Answer:CD life

A CD certainly has a life longer than 5 years. I have several older than that, and they work just fine. Music files don't degrade to static. If this is what you hear, I suspect another cause for the problem.

Are you only noticing problems with music CDs? Do you swap them around and handle them frequently? That will shorten their lifespan. Do you leave them in the car? Don't keep them in appropriate cases?

So far so good, i installed all the drivers, programs, etc. Everything runs smooth and nice.
The cache folder for Mozilla Firefox ( my default browser ) is on the D partition, which is an hard drive, same story for the swap.
I disabled the System Restore, Defragmentation, Superfetch as well...

The print screens are made at a very short period of time between each other.
I only surfed the web with Mozilla Firefox.
Could you explain it to me, please, why is there already 55 / 59 GB ?
Is something wrong with the program SSD Life Pro ?
Can you give me some tips, please ?

Answer:SSD Life Pro is ok ?

After 2-3 days of normal use, the lifetime decreased from 8 years 8 months to 8 years and 5 months.

Question: XP has a life?

Reading the first paragraph, thought i'd post it here and see if it was true.

Answer:XP has a life?

1-It's two years old.
2-It's obviously written by someone whose OS's get hosed by porn sites.
3-It's just another whiney, saracstic blog written by someone that has no life away from his computer.
4-Response #7 captures the spirit of a response for me.

Question: My life is over.

My friends and I were taking a crapload of epic pictures outside with balls and ladders. After gaily skipping inside to load the pictures/video onto my computer, we realized that our worst nightmares had unfolded. As I plugged my 1.0GB PNY SD card into my computer, it claimed that we had never taken any of the pictures that we KNOW we took. After I cried a little, I plugged the SD card back into my camera, and it said that the 100 or so [amazing] pictures/1 video we had taken were corrupted. What can I do to retrieve this information? Please help me.

You know XP end of life is coming.
MS sez I wont be able to get MS Update.
MS sez I wont be able to get MSE security updates.
BUT does that mean I cant get MSE security updates from MS Update but I will still be able to get MSE security updates when I click on "update" in MSE, or no??

Answer:XP end of life & MSE ??

Not sure, but I suspect you will still be able to get updates from avast or avg or any of the others if you have to switch...:-o

While uninstalling Second Life viewer my Avast antivirus sandboxed uninst.exe. When I allowed it to continue running it spawned a process in C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Temp\~nsu and the process was named Au_.exe. When I refused to allow this old well-known malware to run it spawned Bu_.exe then Cu_.exe etc etc. After I got to Ru_.exe I decided enough was enough and tried to end the process in the task manager. No luck. Ok, so I allowed it to run. SecondLife uninstall completed and I went in and deleted the temp folder. I don't know if it came WITH SecondLife viewer or somehow SecondLife viewer had become infected. I was removing a lot of other software and no other had that problem.

Answer:?u_.exe (Au_.exe, Bu_.exe, ...) and Second Life

Question: lcd life

i heard that inside lcd monitors there is some kind of bulb that provides its backlight. If so, how long does the lcd usually last before the bulb goes out? CAn it be replaced or do i have to buy a new monitor?

Answer:lcd life

I don't think that is true, or at least in the way that it sounds. Monitors are not supposed to "burn out" like a light bulb would.

I have a rather strange and interesting problem. I am no stranger to computers, Iíve been dealing with them since 1984, and Iíve even taken an A+ certification course. Unfortunately Iím dropping further and further out of the loop as it were, as I get older. So hereís the problem Iím having. Every day I like to watch streaming video from a news site, during break at work. Until about 4 days ago, all was working just fine, but now I can no longer access the streaming video feed, and it seems to have something to do with the internet connection or modem. In a nutshell; the website is working properly as verified at home, and, by accessing the correct page via my IPhone at work, through the 3G network ONLY. The IP Company worked with me yesterday and said all is well with the internet, which is also verified by the fact that I can access streaming video from another news site, and also YouTube, and other sites as well with no issues at all. I have two computers and an IPhone in the office, and all of them will open up to the same ďletís say stock typeĒ page of the news site, through the work network, which I can only see when logging on through the work network. If I turn Wi-Fi on for my IPhone, and access the page, that stock web page shows up. If I turn off Wi-Fi and use 3G to access the page, it comes up to the correct selection screen for the network. If I then turn on the Wi-Fi again, and refresh the page, the stock page comes back again. This page that comes up is ... Read more

Question: Life With Win 10

I keep all of my personal files on my 'main' PC, a Win 10 system, and access them over the LAN from the other machines. This means I can be sure there is only one version of each file. It's always worked fine but this morning I discovered that I could only open my files in Read Only mode. It took an hour or two to get to the bottom of it but it turns out that an update had changed the advanced network settings to require a password and that permissions for shared folders had been changed to allow read only access over the LAN. As I'm using a Homegroup the advanced network settings shouldn't even have come into the equation.

I had expected problems after moving the main system to 10 and there have, thankfully, been far fewer than I expected, but if you upgrade a system on your LAN to Win 10 don't be surprised if you run into a few issues accessing it.

Question: Life of it's own!

recently I bought my first laptop - an Acer Aspire 5310 on a special cashback offer hard to go past pre-loaded with Vista home.

But this thing has a life of it's own - it doesn't need my input, it has a seemingly full time job just looking after itself!! I turned off the Symantec trial and Windows Updates but it still takes forever to do anything.

If I want to open control panel, allow 30 seconds before I see a window. Same to open IE.

Its got all this Acer empowering stuff going on in the background maybe that needs to go.

Also if I run it on batteries to cycle these then plug in the power when it's low, it logs off ???

Text fields lose the mouse so are really hard to edit as the cursor can reappear almost anywhere... Arrggh.

Soooo slow and tedious to do anything. My old 800PC/10Mb is miles nicer than this 1.6 M/80Gb laptop.

Answer:Life of it's own!

OK how's about 1 question at a time.

In the normal running of a laptop the battery should be cycled from fully charged to low then recharged. So using it at home on battery from fully charged to low and then plugging it in at the first beep shouldn't log you off the internet and off the computer should it? Or is this Vista in all it's glory.

I loaded this for the first time after reading about it in a thread here and I fully recommend this "alternative firmware"

I am so used to the standard linksys/dlink/generic router configuration pages, but the improved functionality and features of DD-WRT really takes a router to the next level. If you have one of the routers that's compatible with their firmware go out and update to it now, you won't be sorry.

Answer:DD-WRT! where have you been all my life?

I think theres one of these threads weekly

If the vendor tells you the Kingston RAM module you buy carries a lifetime warranty. What does it mean?According to Convergent Systems, the distributor for Kingston memory modules, "lifetime warranty? refers to the span of time the product is available for sale in the market before it is superseded by another technology or when the components needed to repair and service the product becomes unavailable. For example, support for old ISA (industry Standard Architecture) cards is almost non-existent today as the technology has been replaced by newer PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) slots is motherboardsclick here

Question: A fact of life

The redirect crud is everywhere. I re-installed my OS (WXPHome) and didn't have it. Then I installed Free Avast! from the Avast! website and then I had it. I re-installed the OS, again. I didn't have it. I then installed Firefox from the Mozilla site and then I had it. I'm not messing with it any more. It seems to be everywhere, from legitimate websites to imbedded in JPG files. Some kind of occult (look it up) rootkit that even the computer geeks and hackers cannot find. I am told either A) remove the rootkit (impossible) or B) re-install the OS (pointless). Until the good-guy geeks and hackers figure it out, 20 million or so computer users will just have to accept redirect as a fact of life.

Hey people,I've recently bought a 24" Mac G5. I've installed windows proffesional with no problems and am currently playing Half Life Holiday 2006 Collection. I've started at the beggining at (Half Life) The Source and what it is, is when I run the source everything is fine. Except for certain bits when I see a load of white line's (which so far only ocurrs when looking into water which has something moving within it) quite annoying to say the least. I know this is probably a simple issue but could anyone impart there wisdom upon me so that I may enjoy the Half Life series.Mac stats:Intel core 22.33 GHz1.98 RamNvidia GeForce 7600 GTWhat do I need to do to enjoy most games competently? Thanks.

I've had this computer for a long, long time. I have quite a beast pc, so i've been told. And i've mainly done this to start a youtube channel.

When I first got the pc, the installation failed over and over again. Of normal Windows that is. I've tried different Windows's from XP, to Vista to 7 and 8. Everything just failed. I finally managed to install and shortly after that I recieved blue screens of death quite frequently.

At first I ignored it, obviously but in time it annoyed me. I've been searching for possible clues for about 9 - 10 months without luck. So i'm just hoping for the help of others. I've had quite a lot of people look in the mt computer :/ Without luck either.

Things i've tried:
Replace SSD's
Replace video card (temporarily)
Replace RAM Memory
Reinstall in every possible way
Reconnect all hardware several times
Tons of software programs

The sad thing is that I can do 3dMark easily, but silly games like Tera Online cause me to crash :/ The crashes are completely random as well -.- And once they start, they continuesly happen (Even though my temperature is fine!)

Please let there be someone that knows how to fix this >.<

My Lenovo y40 is only about 6 months old and the battery only last 30 minutes after full charge. It needs to stay on charge all of the time. I have tried installing new energy manager drivers. What do I do?
Mod's Edit: System model added to front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity

Go to Solution.

Answer:Y40 - Battery life only last 30 min

In response to customer reports of unexpected battery gauge behavior on Y40-70 and Y40-80 laptops, Lenovo determined the battery gauge software is performing as expected. The unusual gauge results being reported are a reflection of the battery reaching end of life.
Lenovo has released a Service TIP to assist customers with obtaining battery replacements under warranty, or if out of warranty, to find a replacement battery from Lenovo-approved vendors. The Service TIP can be found here:
The part numbers for Y40-70/80 batteries are:
Y40 SP/A L13M4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500248
Y40 LG L13L4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500249 substitute part 121500251
Y40 CP/C L13C4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500259 substitute part 121500251
To determine which battery came with your Y40 notebook, instructions for removing the bottom cover can be found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual pdf here. An alternative to opening your system (which does not void warranty) is to search for batteries using the model/product number located on the bottom cover.
Thank you,

Did this become a cracking forum? This is for your own good... At the risk of sounding like a moron, how is getting a cd-key in any way related to "Internet & Networking"? This is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you... I just did a ""search"" for "half life cd key" and got monstorous hits (and the first one I clicked on gave me a cd key, imagine that).
