Vista OEM - Downgrade to XP - 2017

Question: Vista OEM - Downgrade to XP - 2017

Hello,
I have an old PC with an OEM Windows Vista License key. Is it possible for me to downgrade this license to XP?
If it is possible, is the process still the same as the one i found on other forums (i.e. install XP on that machine, enter the Vista key, and for the activation call Microsoft)? Or did the procedure change since neither of these OS are supported anymore?

Thank you in advance!

Preferred Solution: Vista OEM - Downgrade to XP - 2017

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone, i have quite a few questions so i'll post separate threads rather than pollute one thread. I'm wanting to get something a lot better than windows defender. Comcast is my ISP so i can get NIS for free. As most of you are aware of Norton hasn't been doing a great job these days. There has been multiple vulnerabilities in its products that actually decreases the security of windows. Still NIS still does a pretty good job of scoring pretty well in the various test in terms of protection. I was thinking on going with either bitdefender or KIS but of course i would have to pay for those. If you were me would opt for NIS because its still pretty dang good and worlds better than bit defender or would you opt for one of the better products like KIS or bitdefender?

bitdefender free+ CF and SAP i think will be good

Question: End of Vista 2017

I understand that Vista finishes in 2017. Can you expand on this for me?

I have Home Premium 32 bit at present and Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor seems to recognise only minor adjustments to be made. Would you suggest I upgrade now or wait until Vista ends?

Answer:End of Vista 2017

It will be just like XP. What it basically means is that there will be no updates from Microsoft for it. Vista will still work just like xp does still work.

If your happy with Vista then you can continue to use it for the rest of your life if you want.

What I recommend though is that do not use internet explorer use another browser. if you use it after the finish date as it will be vunerable and make sure you have a firewall and AV software protecting your system, but you should have that now anyway.

Good evening everyone. Thanks for your access to this thread. I hope you to read and answer for this question.

I want to ask everyone that which software should I use for keeping security of my PC.

Now I am using Bitdefender Total Security 2017 as main anti-malware soft on my main desktop PC.
And also I was using F-secure SAFE as anti-malware soft on my PC until last week.

Yesterday, I heard that new Avast Antivirus 2017 was released, and new Avast Free is including behaviour scanning system.

I am having trouble deciding which software should I use as anti-malware soft.
Please tell me about your recommend.

I think that...

?Protection features
Better : Bitdefender 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017

?Performance and speed
Lighter : Avast Free 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Bitdefender 2017

?the risk of false positive trouble
Bigger risk : F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017 > Bitdefender 2017

?SSL (HTTPS) Scanning is enable without fake SSL certificate to browser
Unnecessary fake certificate : Avast Free, F-secure
Need fake certificate : Bitdefender Total

F-secure SAFE is the very nice solution as protection from malwares and keeping speedy PC. But it is having big risk of false positive ratings; especially the website blocking is not good with many many false positive ratings. And, sometimes slow down my PC.

Bitdefender Total Security 2017 is the best solution as protection from malwares. This software is providing users very nice anti-malware solu... Read more

Answer:Avast Free 2017 vs F-secure SAFE vs Bitdefender Total Security 2017

Quick question, why Bitdefender Total Protection? Do you need ALL those additional features, or looking for an Antivirus only, because there are Bitdefender Antivirus Plus and Free versions.

What about other protection software like Emsisoft Anti-Malware/Internet Security or ESET Nod32 Antivirus/Internet Security?

Hello, Guys!
I'm new on this forum but I Really Really like this good Forum
So I had Emsisoft for couple of months now
But Recently I've switched over to Avast Premier Beacuse I've never used Avast before So I wanted to try It out
But now I'm without any AV As I do not know what to Install Avast or Emsisoft!
I have licences for both So thats not the problem
Thanks In Advance And btw This forum really nice.

Answer:Avast Premier 2017 Vs Emsisoft Internet Security 2017

Both have excellent protection functions, but certainly they are two different security solutions.
I think the choice of one or the other one is really subjective, I've used Emsisoft for many years and it is my first choice

A couple of years ago I moved myself and some of the fam from Apple Everything to Windows 10. Yesterday however, I bought an new 2017 iPad. I really love the Surface devices, so why?
LEAVING THE PLATFORM BECAUSE OF WINDOWS MOBILE
First, because Microsoft are no longer supporting the phones that are in our house, we are being forced from that platform. So rather than living and breathing completely and happily inside the Microsoft ecosystem, I am now forced to diversify and go elsewhere. This really is a big deal, and changes my thinking from the unthinkable (leaving the MS ecosystem) to the possible (shifting back towards Apple). That being the case, why should I then buy a Microsoft Surface tablet (I was planning to buying a new Surface Pro M3) when I an now FORCED to be open to Apple and Android?
EASE OF MOVING PLATFORMS
Second, Microsoft have made my leap back to Apple so easy, because they have done what Apple and Google have refused to do, which is to make their software available on the others' platforms. Thus the transition to iPad is easy. For example, Word and PowerPoint are effectively free (via my 365 account that I will not be renewing at full cost next time; I will use the academic version which costs me almost nothing). Outlook on iPad is a great app (better than on PC platform). Lots of other apps that Microsoft that I use are also really nice on iPad (e.g. Wunderlist) and made the transition really simple and clean.

Third, the Facebook app on iPad is ... Read more

Answer:I did the unthinkable and chose a 2017 iPad over a 2017 Surface Pro M3

Microsoft are no longer supporting the phones that are in our house, we are being forced from that platform
Can't make sense of that. Presumably you have really old windows phones that no longer get updates?
And what does that have to do with what tablet you use? Windows has timeline, cloud clipboard and a whole host of platform agnostic features coming this fall, so Windows will play nice with android or ios (better than those OSes play with any other).
You don't even need your tablet, desktop and phone to be the same platform. You just need the same services, which for MSFT, exist on every platform.

So I downgraded from Vista home premium 64 bit to Vista Ultimate 32 bit, because of software compatibility issues that wouldn't work with 64. I did an entire clean install of 32 and it was successful. However now my wireless & ethernet device drivers are missing, so I can't connect to the internet. Further when I go to the "Device Manager" it lists these non functional hardware under "Other" and has absolutely no information about them under properties. So I don't even know what brand, model, etc the devices are and have no way of knowing what drivers I even need to install. This also happened to my video controller, so the screen resolution only goes up to 1024 and also has no info on which drivers i need.

Any idea how I can fix this?

According to the Microsoft Update Catalog site, there appears to be a total of 12 security updates for March 2017 for Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 9.
I'll try to confirm that as soon as I set up my test machine and do a "checking for updates".

Be aware that April 2017 will be the LAST security updates released by Microsoft for Windows Vista.
It will then go "extinct" like Windows XP did almost 3 years ago.

Ok, I hope I don't confuse anybody with this. Here we go:

2 yrs ago I bought a Dell desktop computer from my job that currently has XP installed. I still use it for work, but so does my sister (we both work from home full time). This means that there are a TON of applications/add-ons/documents/etc installed for our two, separate and distinct jobs, taking up an unnecessary amount of memory and disk space. This has caused the computer to run painfully slow; so slow that my sister is just going to buy another desktop for her job, and I'll be the sole user of this one.

I want to do a full system recovery so that EVERYTHING is wiped away, and it is back to its original factory settings so that I won't have to buy another computer also. Upon moving to another house and looking around the cpu, I noticed that it originally came with Vista, and I guess my job downgraded to XP. With this new discovery, I would like to install Vista once again after the recovery.

I've read several forums/articles about system recovery and got sooooooooooo confused when I saw words like "partition" and "BIOS!" Since the computer came from my job, I didn't get the original install cds. How exactly would I go about doing a full system recovery w/o the Dell cd? Also, to keep from having to buy a Vista CD, can I just copy the Vista OS onto a jump/flash drive (or cd) and use the product key on the top of the cpu?

Sorry for sounding like such a noob, I'm a... Read more

Actually the subject line asks the question.  IF the answer is YES- then my next question is.... can someone "walk me through" how to get the XP Pro from the R50e.

Answer:Vista to XP: Can I use a copy from my R50e (XP) to downgrade on my T61 (Vista)

I guess you will have to be the first one to try it.Before doing it I would get all the XP drivers and put them on a CD or USB drive. Even if you are successful the restore partition will not have the drivers for your machine so you will have to keep the drivers handy in case you need to recover. I don't think there is any way to add the drivers to the restore partition.

I purchased a toshiba laptop eight months ago, it came with vista and I do not like it. I want to downgrade to XP. (I'm sick of the xplorer crashes and bluescreen! And what is it with the takes forever startup? I don't even have any of those gadgets turned on...)

Does anyone know how to go back to XP or if it is possible? Obviously I don't want to buy it! On the microsoft website it looks like I shouldn't even contact them if the software came with the laptop. Cheers.

Answer:Vista downgrade to XP

Hi,

unfortunately theres no option to demand from microsoft or from toshiba a genuine Windows XP CD. The only way to downgrade to XP is to obtain a fresh copy including the license and download the drivers from the toshiba website. (Please check firstly if there are even XP drivers for your machine available..).

Thats the fact.

Hello there, I'm new to this forum. And fairly new to computers, so please excuse my lack of knowledge for this criteria.

I upgraded to Vista Ultimate a while ago. And I hate it now, I'd love to downgrade to Windows XP. So I googled my plan, and heard that if I boot a Windows XP CD then it will reformat the computer and Install XP.

So I gave it a shot, booted fine. After the components loaded it said ''Now Starting Windows'' And just before the installer comes up, I get blue screened. :( :( Basically saying that I should check if I have virus/spyware and use chkdsk /f, so I did that. And then tried doing it again, and I get blue screened again just before the installer opens.

So right now I'm distress and my friend says ''Why dont you use this KILL disc'' and he says it whipes the hardrive clean. So shall I use that and then use my windows disc? Because I'm worried that if I clean my hardrive and boot the disc I will get blue screened and will have to buy a new computer. :(

Any help will be much appreciated.

Answer:Can't downgrade VISTA to XP

Basically, when you upgrade to Vista your XP licence is no longer valid. Presumably when installing XP it finds Vista already there. If you completely wipe the disc with something like Darik's Boot and Nuke, you should be OK, but you will possibly need to get another Product Key.

Answer:Cannot Downgrade To Xp From Vista

and welcome to the Forum

Sounds like you have a SATA Hard Drive???

There are several ways to do this, but the easiest way is in the BIOS.

Most newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the bios and check the "Sata Operation" setting, change it to "Raid Autodetect/ATA if it is not already. Then boot from your XP install cd and delete all partitions . . creat new one(s) and install XP

Post back if this does not get you up and going

Hey everyone, Question: When I got my T61, it came with Vista installed. I opted for the Vista XP downgrade disc. After a problem with my computer, I had to use the Recovery disc, and XP was installed. Is there anyway I can get Vista back? Thanks...

Answer:Regarding Vista XP downgrade...

It seems that the only possibility to get Vista back is to call Lenovo and to beg them for Vista recovery discs (Of course, you can also borrow the recovery media from a friend if you are lucky).Next time if you want to downgrade to XP and still to keep the option to return to Vista you should create recovery discs first and only after that install XP, because as you install XP the Vista recovery partition on your hard drive is replaced by that of XP.

Answer:vista downgrade

It helps if you post the exact content of the error message.

What version (OEM/System Builders, Upgrade, Retail) of XP is reflected on the CD you are using?

If you are trying to use recovery/restore CDs that relate to a different system...that probably won't work.

Did you delete your previous install? The hard drive has nothing on it?

You have XP drivers for that system?

You have a valid XP license?

It's a Dell Inspiron 5315 and I am wanting to have XP. Can not stand Vista. So is there a safe way to install XP?

Answer:How can I downgrade from Vista to XP?

Yes you need an XP installation disk (with its license number) and drivers for XP in your hands (save them on a CD, the drivers may be available from computer manufacturer's website), in addition to disks or installers for all programs you need on your computer.

Back up all data files (pictures, music, videos, documents, etc) to an external hard drive or USB flash drive. Windows Easy Transfer wizard is a good one to use.

Then insert your XP installation disk in your DVD drive and shut down your computer.

Unplug all USB / firewire / eSATA and ethernet (internet) cables except ones for your mouse and keyboard.

Take out all cards in your PCI slots except the video card.

Turn on your computer. On BIOS, set the DVD drive as your first boot device (instead of SATA HDD). You have to press a key on your keyboard (I think F12) but it should be said on the black screen with white letters before windows logo shows up. So, press that key when the instruction is displayed and change the boot order there.

Then the disk should take over and the installation starts.

When asked, choose to install a fresh copy of XP, not recovery or anything else.

Several minutes or so into the process, you should be asked to choose a partition to which you want to install XP. Click on Disk Options or something like that, and delte the parittion that you have Vista on right now, and format the parititon. Then install XP on that paritition.

After the installation is finished, install the driv... Read more

I have recently gotten absolutely sick of Vista and decided that I needed to change to a more reliable OS. While trying to install XP Pro, however, I get the 0x0000008e error and it says "page fault in non-paged area". I googled this and found out it has to do with faulty ram. I tried all my ram and got the same error and then googled it again. I found out that the error can also occur if you don't have proper drivers installed for your HDD. Now I' stuck, I can't find my drivers. I looked at the manufacturer website and found a driver that needs to be copied to a flopp disk but I don't have a floppy drive. My HDD was produced by "Western Digital Corporation" and it's model number is WD2500JS. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but you can only do a clean install when going from 32-bit to 64-bit, or the other way around.

i am trying to downgrade from vista to xp. i cant seem to get it to load. first it says that i cannot b/c the vista version is newer and will not allow the older software. when i try to do it from the disc comand on the startup screen it gives me an error type message that only lets me exit the startup. what to do? i dont know if i have the appropriate drivers on my computer. i have a sony vio vgn-nr160e. any suggestions?

Answer:downgrade from vista

Reformat and start over, Windows is very stubborn about installing older versions of the OS on top of newer versions.
The other option I can offer is to wait for Vista SP1 to come out, I have been running it, and it helps out ALOT with many problems, and it should be coming sometime in the next month.

Hi:
I've just bought for my brother a new laptop (Toshiba sat A355-S6998)(Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz , 4 GB ram) with Vista home premium 64 bit OS on it, but i want to downgrade it to vista home premium 32 bit, because the programes my bro want to use in his study didn't work due to incompatibility issues "Autocad 2004 or 2007 versions only" and other programes...
Now, is this downgrade safe? Am i going to face any problems after that? I've heard that even the platform or hardware in 64 bit differ from 32 bit, is that right?
Note: A computer technician is going to perform the downgrade.
Thanks for your advise

Your technician is going to have to wipe the HD and re-install win 7 32bit. Make sure you have anything you need backed up incase.

I do have the vista cd and the vista cd. i was hoping anyone would give me suggestions on how to downgrade to xp.. more simply! The main reason why i want to do this is, i mean i have a great 19'' with 3ms and a nvidia graphics card, everything is fine, but when i run programs that take up alot of memory? such as games or more then one program the computer lags, how ever while im on my mediocre xp computer i can run many things just fine... well yea, suggestions

you need to gather all the xp drivers you will require together first
sometimes they are not available
you need a retail xp disk that is not installed on another computer

Hi

I am having trouble with this, when i insert the disk it says XP cannot install as vista is newer then XP..

I then tried to boot up the cd at start up but this also was unsuccessful..

I dont know what is wrong and how I can do this...

Do I need to change motherboard drivers to make sure its compatible with XP?? :confused

Thanks

Answer:downgrade from vista to XP

You need to change the boot order to boot from CD drive first.

Press F2 or DEL as you are booting up and you should see options for doing so.

DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT< COME BACK AND ASK!

Hello travelersc,

May I suggest this

follow this link

http://www.radarsync.com/

Download and install the program for it will search out your system and find you all the drievrs and the software for it

Just install the drivers & software / do not install any prorams that it offers that you installed that would be concidered aftermaket and did not come with the Windows software

I use it and its much easier then searching out the drivers and their software individually

It offers upgrades drivers and software for going from XP to Vista and they are working on upgrading to Windows 7

Question: Vista Downgrade

Im not sure where this thread belongs but since i run Vista home...

I just bought this computer 3 weeks ago, Everything ran fine, no clicky sounds from the hd hardly ever, short processing times, everything was fine, then BAM one night it just shut off randomly for no reason at all. I rebooted and now the HD sounds like its ALWAYS making noise, wont stop even when its just idle. and the graphics to my games got a lil spotty.

I thought about buying a Whisper drive to replace this loud HD to satisfy my wants but i should have to do that cuz it wasnt loud before.

i didnt have much on the comp so I decided to recov it back to factory with he system recov disc, didnt do anything, still buggy. The computer I had before this one is the same brand. and has XP on it, it ran absolutely great, silent at all times, never slow. so im wondering if....maybe I can use the recovery disc from my other computer, which again is the same brand, to recov this HD to my other comps factoy specs, XP and all.

Or is this an impossibility?

thanks!

Not Hardcore but here is the machine i need help with

OS: Vista Home 32-bit
Brand: Emachine (dont knock it its a great comp)
HD: 350gb generic
Processor: AMD 64 Athlon x2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz
Ram:1gb DDR dual channel

Answer:Vista Downgrade

Great system.

My system was very noisy for the first few months under Vista Home Premium. As time went by it quite down dramatically. The HDD and fan noise return after I do a mass deletion of programs & files or an installation of same. I traced some of my system's hyperactivity to the onset of Vista's Superfetch trying to learn my program execution habits so that it would have them ready for me. Combining Superfetch, Windows Defender, Windows Explorer, private antivirus, Desktop Manager, Internet Explorer, 12+ svchost's, etc... leaves my system's RAM heading for 2.0GB and CPU 's near 100%. These levels can cause the system to freeze at times preventing any user input. Virtual Memory of 4.19GB also contibutes to HDD thrashing. Upgrading memory from 1024MB to 2048MB certainly aided in quieting things down. Have you thought about upgrading to 2GB at some point?

The bottom line is that Vista is here to stay. Service Pack 1 (SP1) beta is out. I recently read that MS said that XP, now enjoying SP3, is slated for support through 2010. When XP first entered the picture in 2001, similar derogatory comments were made about it as are now being made about Vista regarding downgrading.

So stay the course and enjoy the ride. These are exciting tmes we live in!

I have been using Vista Ultimate 64 bit on my HDX 9001 tx notebook since over an year, and recently got fed up and downgraded it to XP.

Strangely, the screen has become very dull. I remember XP had POWER SETTINGS, and the screen used to be dull if I used VISTA on "Save power" mode. But I am not sure why XP is running on this mode. Answer:Downgrade from Vista to XP

Hi, I am sure you are already aware of this that when ever you downgrade from an operating system such as Vista and then to XP you will always have problems. I have installed in my friend but it was dekstop and after alot of searching we finnaly were able to rectify our errors.

The things you can check for first is device manager, right click my computer then click on properties, then click hardware and click device manager

Now here look for how many drivers are you missing, these drivers are needed in order to do this. Try going to the manufacturers website and download the drivers, another tips find a similar model to your laptop or close and try and download the XP version drivers.

I am sure your laptop comes with a FN key hold this and then look over f1 or f2 key and there should be one with a star sign with+ try increasing brightness.

Try searching google for laptop power management software or lapto power scheme other than that there isn't much you can do. Hardware manufacturers have made it in such a way that installing another operating system causes problems.

Sorry I can't be more of help, maybe another member herre will give it aa shot.

If I restore using Lenovo Care will that make the OS back to windows xp? please help. thanks

Answer:Downgrade Vista to XP

If you made your backup media using XP then yes I presume it would change your operating system back to Windows XP and the state in which you bought your laptop, so all your files and programs would be gone so before doing this I'd make a backup of all your files.

I'm looking to buy a new computer but I have a small problem. I'm a musical producer that needs a computer for using Pro Tools only. (No Macs!) I dont like them. My laptop is fine but I want a powerful desktop. Thing is it's darn near impossible to find a 32-Bit system at Newegg.com or Frys etc. Pro Tools doesn't support anything 64-Bit. And most of you know Pro Tools doesn't really play well with anything lol.

If I buy a computer with a 64-bit processor installed with Vista 64 can I downgrade to Vista Ultimate 32-Bit?

If so, I just got a disc in the mail from microsoft because my other computer crashed. I reordered my Vista Ultimate . So i have an official copy with SN. I used the disc so do I have to order another one? Or can I use the same one and same SN they sent me?

Thanks

I just bought for my daughter an Acer laptop with Vista Home pre-installed. She wants to have Windows XP instead. Sorry if I sound stupid, but please can someone tell me how to downgrade? (I've XP pro SP2 which I would like to install.) I'm also hoping to change it back to Vista eventually using the CD that came with the laptop. Would it be a problem? Many thanks!

Answer:Downgrade from Vista to XP

Firstly, I assume that the copy of XP you want to install is not installed on another machine already? If so, you MAY be able to put the CD the laptop, boot from CD and start the XP install routine, choosing to install to the same disk as Vista & opting to format the disk. However, Vista may not allow you to even get this far. Windows installations don't seem to like earlier versions for some reason...You may need to look on the net for some 3rd party software that can recognise and format NTFS drives from a bootable CD. There's a few out there. Now onto your second question. Changing back to VISTA later....that could be another story. Is the disk that came with the laptop an actual copy of Vista or is it a 'recovery CD'? If it's a recovery CD, it's possible that your Vista install files are either a) on a hidden partition on the laptop, b) on a visible partition or c) on the C: drive althuogh this is unlikely. The Recovery CD would format the drive and restore the laptop to the state it was on delivery with Vista running happily no doubt. However, formatting your C: drive to put XP on COULD wipe information needed by the recovery program. If your CD is a copy of Vista, then it doesn't matter. YOu can just use that to reinstall.I wouldn't rush at it anyway. Take some time to fully learn what you've got in the box, read the instructions - it should outline recovery situations in there somewhere and check you have EVERYTHING that would be needed to get the system back.May I ask wh... I have a Dell Studio 17 which came preinstalled with Vista Home Premium. I detest Vista and purchased a copy of XP Professional; however the computer repeatedly crashes about five minutes into the installation. Dell Support offered no solution. From what I've been able to ascertain, Microsoft will not allow a downgrade to XP unless Vista Business is installed. How can I successfully install XP Pro onto my laptop?

Any suggestions will be appreciated!!

Answer:Vista to XP Pro Downgrade

Don't downgrade, do a fresh install.

Boot from your XP CD, when given the option format hard disk to NTFS, XP should install.

That's how it works on a normal computer anyway, but you have a Dell, that may not work, you may need the Dell recovery disk which means you're stuck with Vista.

And if you were going to change from Vista (which is a bit crap, I'll agree) you should have gone for Win 7, it's good, and XP is about ten years old and outmoded now.

I feel this is a very basic problem, but am stuck in the mud regarding this downgrade.

On our home gateway desktop with Vista, I downgraded to XP Pro and cannot connect to our wireless internet. I went to Gateway's site and tried to download the network driver with no luck. I went to an XP driver site and had no luck.

I noticed the sound card is disabled as well.

Am I stuck with needing to buy a new network card from Staples or Best Buy?

Any help or advice?

Answer:Vista to XP Pro Downgrade HELP

What is the model # of your Gateway computer? If the computer shipped with Vista, then there probably are not going to be any drivers for XP available from the Gateway site, which means you will be hard pressed to find drivers for XP for that computer. It's better to load Vista or Windows 7.

When I insert the original XP CD, to reinstall my windows XP on my curredt Vista, and click install, it say "this program is blocked due to compatibility issues", "setup cannot continue because the version of windowson your computer is newer than the version on your CD"

what should I do???

Answer:Cant downgrade from vista to XP

Hey. You need to boot from the xp cd. First of all if you have any data that you want to save you need to do it before you try this as it will wipe everything from your hard drive. So boot from the xp cd and then delete the cirrrent partition and create a new one to install xp on it. Then you should select the full format and not the quick one. Then you can install xp. Before you try this make sure that you can find all of the xp drivers for your computer. I did this for my brokers laptop an it was a pain in the butt to find drivers for it so it is really impotant to find all of them before you try this.

Well, the funnies aside, does anyone know if this model Acer can run XP?
I told him that Acer are of the the few who have Vista-only BIOS's, and as such, it might be impossible to install XP on this laptop, so before I start, I thought I would ask if anyone here knows if you can install XP on this laptop.

Hi, I was at the point of investing in a registry cleaner to sort out my pc and then I read what was written on these forums against things that tamper with the registry, so I am looking at another route now. That route, is to ditch my 32 bit vista basic and get something else. One reason to ditch, was that my pc being a HP, the creation of restore discs did not work, so I cannot reformat and reload the original OS. Now, I have it in my mind to buy XP PRO SP3, as at least most users say this one works and hey, my pc may move a bit faster too. The other OS I am considering, is Linux XP, this being very cheap and I really would like to be free of microshaft, my next computer will be a Mac. But I need something in the meantime, be it XP PRO or Linux XP.

So my question is, will Linux XP work with photoshop CS3 and Picasa 3, they being my majority use other than online ? I understand I could with XP PRO installed, dual boot, something Vista will not allow on one machine

Regards MS XP PRO SP3, are there any problems encountered when downgrading from Vista, or is it just a case of reformat then load the disc ?

I have not heard anything good about Vista and, in fact, the new computer recently bought for me by my employer was purchased from Dell simply because that was the only place they could get one with XP on it. Within the last year, I upgraded my old computer from ME to XP home. No problems. I have copies of 98, ME and XP home available and would like to know if, and how, I could "downgrade" a new computer to XP home.

I was told by one of the guys at work that I could format the hard drive, insert a 98 disc in the computer and then put the XP home disc in.
(He said that the XP upgrade disc would not work with Vista and that putting the 98 disc in would "fool" the computer into accepting the XP upgrade.)

Is there anything to his theory? Can anyone tell me how to do this or even whether it is possible?

I was told by Best Buy that I could order a computer with XP on it but I don't expect that it would be as cheap as some of the package deals I see in stock.

I will appreciate any help or advice.

Answer:Downgrade from Vista to XP

You're replacing the OS, not upgrading or down grading it. All you do is install XP in its place (reformatting the hard drive)

What are your reasons for wanting to keep xp? Changing the OS may not be necessary.

hi all There are some great postings about downgrading, but none seem to have all the details (I need the help!!)  I recently purchased the X61 and it came preloaded with vista home basic (yuk!) which I want to remove and replace with XP.  I have all the necessary XP discs, so all good there. However, I have no idea on what to do next, even after reading the different postings/threads. I know that I would not be alone in this request, but it would be awesome if one of you IT gurus out there could post in easy to follow "idiot proof" instructions what steps we need to follow to do a clean install of XP.  I appreciate any help I can get! ThanksChris

I have a pavilion dv1017nr laptop, and I want to down grade to XP. I have found every driver for xp except the audio drivers. What are the chances of getting the audio to work with the vista drivers?

Also whenever I boot from the xp cd, after it loads the setup files, it blue-screens.

Anyone have any ideas?

I've tried installing from one of my:

a) sp1 discs
b) sp3 discs

Yes, the computer was turned on.

Answer:Vista -> Xp pro downgrade

You will most likely need to turn SATA mode to IDE in the BIOS (dunno if you'll be able to do this in HP's BIOS or not). That or find SATA drivers and slipstream them into a custom XP disc with nLite.

IMO, just stick with Vista. It's not bad (I'm using Ultimate x64 right now in fact). I like it way more than XP. XP has overstayed its welcome IMO.

Question: Vista downgrade

I recently bought a Panasonic CF-52 Toughbook model CF-52GGNBXAM. When I right click on "My Computer" it says that Vista Home Premium is installed, but on the back of the Laptop I have the genuine windows oem sticker and it says the laptop has vista business?

Here is my question. I need to downgrade to XP Pro as my work software is not compatible with Vista.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible, the laptop is a 32 bit system. I do not have any restore disks or any of the software that originally came with the laptop.
If any more information is needed please ask.
Thank you in advance

I have a Toshiba A200-20N notebook. It came with Vista Business and I want to format it and install XP Professional.

I have heard though that you cannot just do this, you need to flush the bios first.

Is this correct and if so, how do you go about flushing the bios?

Answer:Vista to XP downgrade

Yo, I dont think you need to flush the bois on doing this. What you need to do is go to bios and set the boot sequence to your CD/DVD, then save and restart, insert your WIN XP PRO and boot from cd, install the OS from there, remember to reformat the drive or delete and create partition (if you want to change the partion if not then just go to the part where it ask to format the drive) and then install the WinXP. Hope this work.

Inform me if you encounter any problem.

I am having a problem downgrading vista to xp on my A57 ThinkCentre.  I followed the instructions on the rescue and recovery boot disk and product recovery disk.  It appeared the downgrade worked, until I was informed to restart the system to finish the process.  All it will do now is boot back into rescue and recovery.  I cannot get into windows, even after removing the disk and restoring the primary boot from the hard drive.  I have repeated the process several times.  Any help?

I recently downgraded severla Thinkcentre M58 7360-APU from Vista Business to XP SP3. I then used Thinkvantage software to apply the latest software for that model. So when I check device manager, there a no devices that requires attention. Well my problem manifested recently, I inserted a USB Flash drive into the USB port and the OS did not recognised it. It proceeded to install as a new device and a dialog window popped up asking for the software to be installed. I checked the BIOS to ensure that the USB configuration is enabled. Any ideas how I can resolved this USB issue? So far I have not found any useful information on this topic. However, I did observed that they are some Thinkcentres with similar problems and no solution.

Answer:Downgrade OS from Vista Business to XP Sp3

I am sorry that I am not adding anything to address the problem here.  I have a few M58e (type 7269) and want to install a fresh XP OS and am looking for the SATA driver (to insert via the F6 key). SInce you have installed it by this point, did you find one? Or did you change the ATA mode? If the latter, what driver did you then load in order to change the BISO ATA mode back to "enhanced"?

Answer:can i downgrade to xp on a Core 2 Duo vista

According to this article, all versions of XP will support single processors with multiple cores; the only problem comes if you have more than one physical CPU.

A M58 was purchased on 10/21/09.  Unfortunately it was advised to ask for the machine with XP instead of Vista.  I have just found out this was not good advice since Microsoft stoped fully supporting XP in March '09.  My order says downgrade to XP.  Is there a way to recover the Vista OS on the machine.

Answer:Restore Vista From Downgrade To XP

This is just a suggestion - going back to the vista upgrade would be an even bigger mistake.  Either go with Windows 7 or and open source distibution (ubuntu 9.10 is a great out of the box distibution AND its free).  If you go with Vista you are going to have a lot of problems. I would avoid it.  Stay with XP until you are ready to move either to 7 or linux.

Answer:Can I Downgrade Windows 8.1 to Vista

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

HP most likely did not provide drivers for your Vista OS, so it wouldn't be a wise idea.

Besides, going to such an old OS isn't the best idea.

my brother has windows vista on his computer, but i don't know exactly what brand because some of it is custom. any ways he wants to downgrade from vista to xp by inserting it in the cd drive. then change boot to boot from cd. then we found out that vista will not let u downgrade to a lower version becuz it is a peace of *censored*. then we read that we could reformat the whole hardrive then begin again to boot from the cd. this is were we are stuck at. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Windows Vista Downgrade help

I was fortunate as my HP came with a recovery disk which also gave me an option to downgrade ... and so it made formatting easy - then applied XP after. You'll need to reformat and wipe that horrible Vista - but I think you'll need some other form of boot CD - one with suitable tools to allow you to this.  Right now can't think of what to suggest but probably one of the gurus will step up and help on this.

I bought a Lenovo R61 with Vista Business and I hear that I have direct downgrade rights as long as I have a legitamate XP media. How do I downgrade this system correctly?

Answer:Vista Business Downgrade

First off why are you downgrading a machine that is built to run vista? If you are having a few issues why not either dual boot or run a virtual pc with xp in it? Dont believe all the horror stories you have read about vista its not that bad of an os. try it out for a while give it some time but remember if you do reformat and go back to xp vista now is designed and its a pain in teh *** to reactivate it they tend to ask a lot more questions now. If you truely want to do this... Boot to your xp cd then delete all the partitions and repartition using ntfs and format and install windows its all in a gui and very easy to do if you need any help feel free to ask and someone or even me can help you do it.
