I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I see that the adaptive keyboard auto-dims after inactivity. I'd like to manually dim/sleep the adaptive keyboard so that the backlight doesn't distract in a dark room. Is there a way to do this? If not, I'd like to put in a feature request for it. Thanks!

Hi. I have have been away from my PC for a few months only to boot it recently. I have realised that every time I put my PC to sleep, when resumed with pressing my Power Button (as I have set all my USB wake off), it takes a while for the screen to come up. The POST comes first, then a Window Error Recovery screen. The Window Error Recovery screen gave me 3 choices; either to boot normally (default), enter safe mode, or Safe mode CMD.

There was no BSOD or any associated log as BlueScreenViewer didn't capture any of that. I tried disabling all startup services via MSconfig and tried sleeping with all startups turned off; that didn't work.

I updated my graphic driver to the latest offered for my GTX570. I am running Window 7 Ultimate x64.

I am currently running with Power Settings in Control panel on "High Performance" with
Sleep After: never
Hybrid sleep: On
Hibernate after: never
Allow wake up Timer: disable

Tried setting to Balanced, didn't fix the issue either.

The booting is just irritating where I have to find myself staring the black POST screen and selecting the "start normally" option in the Window Error Recovery Option.

Any help welcome.

Thank you.

Okay for the adaptive keyboard (function keys at the top), how do I change which applications trigger particular key layouts.   I see that the "Web browser" layout is defaulted to Chrome and IE.  But, I want function keys (for debugging in the dev tools particularly) to be the default for my web browsers.  I can't figure out how to change the "AutoChange Applications"

I have a new Carbon X1 (2014) and I'm struggling with this keyboard for a couple of reasons.  1. I am a heavy user of Visual Studio and while in Visual Studio, I need the function keys to appear.  I have not found a way to modify the Adaptive Keyboard to display the Function keys while Visual Studio is the active window. 2. I listen to music most of the day (using Xbox Music app).  I need media controls on my keyboard (like my last Lenovo laptop had).  I am surprised that the adaptive keys for media playback are missing (other than volume).  How can I accomplish this? Other than keyboard issues (which are unfortunatly hurting my productivity at this point in time), I love this laptop. Thanks,Pete

Hey Guys, Just got my new x1 carbon, and I like it alot, trackpad isn't as bad as everyone is complaining about. However one big issue is that I want to keep the Function row on by default, and only switch to the default one with volume controls if I press the FN button to do so.  Right now no matter even if I chose not to show the default keys, with volume and cloud and all that, it still comes back anytime I switch to a different app.

Hello, I have a X1 Carbon 20A7 laptop since september 14, running on Windows 7.The adaptive keyboard was working fine initially but since 2 months, it shows inconsistent behaviour.Sometimes it works perfectly fine, others it randomly freezes or even disappears. It means that all the sudden I cannot access key functions such as sound & luminosity settings. When this happens, using the standard sound bar in the Windows menu doesn't work either...It usually freezes on the Fn menu, meaning the F tabs are still working, but I cannot switch the keyboard to another mode... I can sometimes fix the issue by rebooting, but it does not work everytime. Is this pure failure & should be sent back to Technical Support or any ideas on how to fix it myself? Thank you,Anne

I received the new X1 carbon. My IT shop had to image it with the corporate Windows 8 image (which I quickly upgraded to 8.1). My Fn keyboard is basically useless now. I tap on the Fn key and it doesn't do anything. I tap on the "configuration" key and it doesn't do anything. I assume it is because I don't have the Adaptive Keyboard app in control panel. I can't find where to download and install it from. Please help!

Aside from reinstalling/factory imaging my 1 week old X1 Carbon (20A8), I figured I would ask here... The tphkload.exe process is at a constant 25% CPU.  Have to keep this laptop plugged in or it dies after about 2-3 hours. When I am booted into the OS desktop, the left "switch" button does not work.  All other times it does... during POST, at the login screen and at the lock screen.  At this point, I have to lock my machine to switch between the Fn menu and Volume menu.Restarting the service has no effect.Uninstalled, rebooted and installed the software about 5 times now and still no joy.I am currently using Hotkey Features Integration v5.33.0000 with the latest BIOS v1.16.  Do I even need this software to use the adaptive keyboard - since during POST I can change the keyboard just fine.   I should also mention that uninstalling the Hotkey software and rebooting, the Adaptive keyboard cannot be changed when in the OS at all (even when locked or logging in)... yet it can during the POST sequence.  Strange... Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have been using my new X1 Carbon for couple of months now and really like it.  Recently I suddenly notice that my adaptive keyboard strip is turned off.  No matter what I do, I cannot seem to turn it on.  I have updated BIOS to the latest version but still still the same. Any idea?

Answer:X1 Carbon Adaptive Keyboard Turned Off

Hi, In my case the adaptatve ribbon is on but can't switch between modes, if the laptop gets in suspend mode, when it comes back, the ribbon is off without showing any indication. I have installed, unistalled time and again the latest versions of the hotkey drivers, lenovo system update and all stated in this forum without positive results. The strange fact is that the settings on the Control Panel for the adaptative keyboard are missing and no matter how many times I try to intall, it gives no error when I install but still not showing at the control panel. I have also disabled the antivirus to check but no luck. System updato also don't load and stais with the logon screen. Does enybody have any clues about this?. Thanks in advance.

I'm hoping someone can provide some feedback on how well the X1 Carbon keyboard and screen have been for using it for software development. I use Visual Studio and Remote Desktop quite a bit and have some concerns regarding the screen and keyboard.   I don't want to get a Hi DPI screen and have to workaround the limitations of the OS.   Are there issues with the RDP client and the Hi DPI screen? How has the keyboard been for someone who uses the function keys 10% of the time?  I usually rely on memory to know where to press the F3, F5 keys.  I'm concerned it will be hard to find the right location without physical keys. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:X1 Carbon, Adaptive Keyboard, and Hi DPI screen

Just got mine shipped. I will install Visual Studio this weekend and let you know. IE 11 scales well (looks great and is super fast) in High DPI screen but Chrome isn't ready yet (works okay with some workarounds). Overall, the experience isn't as good as it would be on a machine with lower 1920x1080 resolution. With the font scaling enabled, things are okay but not as crisp in many programs. Still adjusting to the weird keyboard (home/end keys are at the worst location). Backspace and Delete side by side did bother me today a few times. If the lack of physical F5, F8 and F10 keys bothers me, I might put some kind of stickers over function key area to guide my fingers. I have turned off the dynamic adaptive keys (function key mode is set for all applications). I think it is a very nice device but they did mess up the keyboard experience quite a bit! High DPI support should eventually come to older/other windows applications (apps from windows store don't have an issue with high DPI)

I have a X1 Carbon Touch (Machine Type 20A7).It came with Windows 8.1 Pro but I flahsed my company image (Windows 7 x64 Enterprise) onto it.Everything works fine and I installed all drivers but the adaptive keyboard strip stays at F1 F2 .. keys and does not change no matter what. Pressing the Fn key does not switch it. I installed the On screen display and have the Adaptive Keyboard show in Control Panel and Dynamic Mode is also on.  The camera icon only flashes the screen once and does nothing. The Wifi icon does nothing and the Gear icon does nothing as well. Only the keyboard light icon and the regular F1 F2 keys work fine.. Any help is appreciated. EDIT:I noticed something funny.. While starting up or before logging into Windows (at Windows lock screen) I'm able to switch the adaptive keyboard strip... But once I'm logged into Windows it suddenly stops working. if I lock the screen again I'm able to switch the adaptive keyboard strips again...  What's going on?

When I have seen this in the past it is caused by not having the proper Power Management driver in the OS image.

20A7 uses a new version of Power Management driver and if your IT guys didn't update the company Win7 image to include the new driver, then it's not going to work.

I cleaned the keyboard of my X1 carbon today, which inevitably involved pressing  all  keys on the keyboard randomly. Immediately after the cleaning, the speaker can't produce any sound. Headphones work fine. I checked the sound option in control panel, and everything seems to be working normally. The green bar that shows the changing volume of speaker perfectly respond to the system and browser, except no sound is actually produced. It also shows that the sound card is working fine. Does that mean that my speakers are broken? Is there any way to tackle the issue or check the status of the speaker? Thank you.

The adaptive keyboard on my 2014 X1 Carbon appears to be failing. It regularly registers phantom button presses near the right end that trigger (e.g.) the settings or keyboard backlight depending on which strip is active. When it launches the settings window, it happens frequently enough to interfere with use. I found many suggestions to update the bios, e.g.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-20A7-adaptive-keyboard-phantom-butt...I have installed all updates from Lenovo's System Update (the machine is running Windows 10), so the bios should be up to date. Are there any other software fixes I should try? If it is a hardware issue, is itsomething I can do myself? Based on my current usage I could survive with the strip entirely disabled, but I don't see a consumer-facing way to do that. Thanks.

Hi, I recently received a Carbon X1 on starting my new job. It's quite nice but there is a crippling bug which i'm wondering if it is a software issue or a hardware one.The Adaptive keyboard randomly starts holding the "F1" location on the keyboard. By default this causes the sound to go to zero, as if the area was being pressed (pressing the increase volume button won't work and using external volume controls shows that the button is held as a "tug of war" occurs in the attempt to raise the volume). This would be livable if not for the fact that when this happens, the trackpad is also affected and will not work again until it randomly stops happening. I'm inclined to assume a hardware problem but if someone could tell me where the drivers are for this, i'd like to try reinstalling them. I've tried reinstalling the power management drivers (another thread implied they were related) but no luck. I can't see any related drivers on the drivers and software download page.I've tried editing the settings to default it to the function page, turned off lay-flat and application switching. Turned off all but two of the function rows and nothing has worked so far.

Answer:Carbon X1 Adaptive Keyboard bug or hardware error

I have almost the same issue, except its shifted a little bit to the right, so it mutes and unmutes the sound. In addition, every now and then, it starts spamming all touch keys at once, which makes the computer completely unusable. It opens the adaptive keyboard settings aswell as the snipping tool, and it puts the machine in flight mode. I can't really adress what causes the switch between F1/mute spam and all-buttons spam. I have tried updating everything, including the bios.

Hi,Where would one look in the registry to change the default adaptive keyboard setting? What I am trying to achieve is the following:- Enable F keys as default setting- Disable application switching of toolbar We will need to do this on a large number of laptops, and it's not really viable to do it via the aplication (as it will be time consuming). I hope to deploy the settings as a batch file which imports a registry entry. Thanks for any help!

To keep the keyboard showing Function row at all times:

Press the gear icon to load the Adaptive Keyboard Settings app
Change the default row to be "Function" - check the box under the default column
Turn off "Dynamic Mode" - flip the switch to off on the right-hand panel

In this configuration you can press Fn to cycle through the rows but it will always default to Function row whenever you switch to another app.

Hope this helps!

Thank you.

Answer:X1 CARBON adaptive keyboard doesn't do anything when touched

Hi Nachumama,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Adaptive Keyboard on your ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

The Adaptive keyboard requires the Hotkey software and the Lenovo Power Management driver to be installed in order for it to function properly.  Both can be downloaded from Lenovo's support site.

Please click here to get the complete setting on Adaptive Keyboard.

Hope this helps!

I understand the premise of the adaptive keyboard. I would like to disable the behavior that automatically opens the "Adaptive Keyboard Settings" message/dialog. The way I type, I trigger the box constantly when I hit the number and backspace buttons. I *really* don't want to see it again. How can I permanently prevent it from opening?  Thanks in advance.

Answer:Disabling the X1 Carbon "adaptive keyboard settings" dialog box

Hi everyone.I'm in the exact same boat as the OP of this thread. The way I type keeps activating the adaptive keyboard wizard and it's aggravating beyond belief. I am a receptionist for a Fortune 500 company and this stupid wizard keeps slowing my work down. Unfortunately we use an extremely outdated email database which lags even on a brand new X1 carbon and that combined with the wizard popping up at unopportune moments can really jam a stick in my gears.I've spoken to the IT team in our office and they too have searched high and wide for the answer on how to disable it....they told me "if you ever find out, let us know because we hate it too"I don't have much hope...so far this is the only place someone has posted about this problem and OP's post was back in July and so far no one has answered....It's a good thing this is my work laptop...if I experienced this with a personal laptop it would have to go...this is unnaceptable. Please, for the love of all that is good in this world, tell me that this can be turned off....Okay so I found this : http://forum.notebookreview.com/thinkpad-edge-x1-x100e-x120e-sl-l/745310-stop-accidentally-hitting-a... and forwarded it to my IT guy....crossing my fingers hoping he will be able to get this working.

Hi, The way I type (I have learned after purchacing into this x1), sometimes I rest my fingers just above the number keys. On a traditional keyboard, that has meant I lightly touch the function keys for some period of time, without any intention on pressing on any of them. With the adaptive keyboard, this is a catastrophe. Random things will happen as the adaptive functions start launching left, right and center. This would be easy to detect for the adaptive keys, similar to how resting a finger on the touch pad does not randomly shoot out click messages. For me, all I would need to make the laptop usable would be the ability to disable long presses on the adaptive keys completely, only trigger the function on touch release from the adaptive strip, and only when the release happened on the same strip key as the initial press landed on. As it is now, the adaptive strip makes the otherwise excellent keyboard pretty much unusable for me. Is there a plan on upgrading the strip drivers with more customisation in the coming few months, or will I need to buy a new computer?

Answer:x1 carbon touch gen2 adaptive keyboard too sensitive

I have kept checking on statements from Lenovo about the Thinkpad X1 Carbon for 7 months now, and I have not seen any indication of plans to change the keyboard. I have heard numerous complaints first hand about the keyboard, and the tens of reviews that I have read from around the world the last half year, there is doubt to outright irritation about the 2014 X1 Carbons keyboard and touchpad (the further specs of the 2014 X1 Carbon are of Rolls Royce impression, but because of the ruined keyboard and erroneous touchpad, we have decided not to consider the X1 Carbon further. Observations:Professionals want a large number of direct, true and tactile keys in traditional locations for efficient work. Lenovo has moved away from this fact by taking away keys, creating a touch strip while there is a touch screen already on it, and by changing the position of essential keys or removing them completely to be replaced by non-intuitive key combinations. The Red Dot award was truely earned for the weight and looks of the screen and case, but the keyboard is the weak link that makes the chain weak. Lenovo, Lenovo, Lenovo, what have you done?

I dont know why this is happening but I have tried everything - installed the power management driver, the solutions center but since I received this laptop, the settings window for apaptive keyboard never opens. Ive tried it through the control panel and also the keyboard strip but nothing works. I have updated the laptop to latest config but that also dint help. Without the settings window, i cant disable the dynamic feature which creates so many issues with unnecessary key presses.Any ideas? this keyboard is driving me crazy and I am one step away from returning it!

I have an 2014 X1 Carbon with the Adaptive Keyboard. I did a fresh reinstall of Win 8.1 Pro, which I do every few months.  I usually install System Update first, which scans for the necessary drivers and updates, and installs the Adaptive Keyboard driver software without a hitch.  Only this time, the driver software wasn't listed as an update.  I have run and re-run System Update several times now and it says no more updates are available.  The function row is locked to F1-F12 and the button that normally launches the keyboard configuration wizard does nothing. I also checked the Lenovo driver site and there were no downloads related to the Adaptive Keyboard.  What's happened to the driver?  Like I said, it's normally installed automatically by System Update, but not this time.

Answer:Adaptive Keyboard driver software unavailable (2014 X1 Carbon)

To add to my post above, has anyone done a fresh reinstall recently of Windows 8.1 on a 2014 X1 Carbon and not had this problem?  Is this "just me," or did Lenovo accidently remove the Adaptive Keynoard software when updating their driver download site for the Windows 10 launch?

Good morning,I've been having this issue with my x1 carbon laptop where it is acting as if I'm pushing buttons on the adaptive keyboard, though I'm not. For example, I have it set on the Function mode as default, and out of nowhere, the protector settings will pop up and start changing, then the radio options, then keyboard brightness, and will continually jump between these settings without any user input. From what I can tell, it won't stop without a reboot. Any suggestions? I've tried off wifi, disabling the biometrics, changing settings in the adaptive keyboard settings interface, and no luck. I am running Windows 7 SP 1. Thanks.~ Chris

Hi, My X1 Carbon Touch adaptive keyboard keys don't work anymore. I've tried to search through the knowledge base and installed the mentioned power management drivers, also made sure to flash the bios of the computer with the latest and installed all updates. Yet the keys are either frozen at the F1 keys or doesn't come on or light up at all. I can't access volume, brightness, or any of the other settings.  Any ideas how to truly resolve this? The computer becomes pretty intolerable without this working, and I'm surprised that Lenovo's solution center and diagnostic tools can't fix this.  Thanks!

Hi There I have two Problems: 1. I would like to change the default application when I click on the Voice Button on the adaptive keyboard. It starts Nuance Dragon Assistant but I would like to link it with a different voice application. So when I click on it I dont want Dragon Assistant to start but another vpoce application. 2. I uninstalled dragon assistant because i had problems with it. Now I cant find this link anywhere to install it again.I called support but all they say is I should restore my entire laptop... Im sure there is another solution to this problem. kind regardsNathan

Answer:X1 Carbon Adaptive keyboard change default Voice Application

By registry entry it is possible to launch any app when you press the voice button.  Here is an example of reconfiguring the voice button to launch notepad.  You can change it as needed to point to some voice application.  I assume you are familiar with modifying registry and .reg files but feel free to ask follow-up questions.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/62276273/adaptive_keyboard_wsr/launch_notepad.reg

What's unique about the support for Dragon is that the voice button will start Dragon (on the first press), and then stop Dragon (on the second press).  You won't get this same function with other apps - the button will just turn into a simple launcher when you modify the registry.

At first I thought it was me, and I wasn't letting it hibernate all the way or something and so when I took my ultrabook out of the bag the next day, the battery would be very low (like 20%) and the red light would be on. Like it was sleeping. I am 100% positive I let it hibernate last night, and again today same thing happened. It's not always, just sometimes. **bleep**?! Why is this waking itself up  from hibernation when it's just sitting in the bag overnight? I'm not touching it. Add this to the list of the many other bugs this thing has. Including: The first one I got had bad RAM and had to be returned. The second one I got had a bad USB port (critical when there is a measly 2 of them). Luckily the local Lenovo shop was able to just tighten down the plug and even luckier it was THAT plug and not the other one that is sodderd on the board which would have been a sent-back to fix. Answer:ThinkPad X1 Carbon hibernate auto resuming by itself and myriad of other complaints...

Just did it again. I powered on and there was some DOS looking screen (black with white text) that said something about recovery from a hibernate (or something like that) because the battery was critically low. I resumed it and the battery was at 5%. It was 100% when it went into the bag and hibernated. This is rediculous. Something is causing this to turn on -- what is it? And Lenovo needs to fix this bug.

I find the sensitivity on the adaptive keyboard to be too great. I used AutoHotKey to add a dely between hitting the function keys and it responding. My question is, How can I do the same for the keys to the right of the function keys? I am always hitting the keyboard backlight and settings buttons. I could add a delay using AutoHotKey if I knew the key mapping to those buttons. Is it possible to get those mappings? Thanks!

Answer:The 2014 X1 Carbon: Stop accidentally hitting adaptive keyboard keys

I occasionally hit the volume and brightness key with my left ring finger.  As I type, that finger slightly rests above those keys sometimes.  What makes matters worse is that the subtle touch causes the brightness to go from max to zero almost immediately. Seems like something they can fix with a software update, to resolve the sensitivity or jump behavior.

Our company recently purchased a few new X1 Carbon's with the adaptive keypboard function strip. These machines were shipped running Windows 7 Pro. Unfortunately, on one of the machines, the function keyboard only toggles between its four modes when the domain Admin user (which also happens to be user account the machine was setup and initially used under) is logged in. When other users, even those made members of the local Admins group, login, the keyboard defaults to the F-Key display and does not respond to mode changes (although the F-keys themselves work fine). Prior to logging in, any user can toggle between the F-key mode and one of the function modes from the Windows login screen, but as soon as anyone other then the Admin user logs in, the system defaults back to only showing the F-Keys. When I pull up the Adaptive keyboard control panel while logged in as the working Admin, is shows everything as being enabled as expected. But when I log in as another user, everything is disabled. Attempting to enable any of the adaptive keyboard settings has no effect, and the settings are not even saved when the settings menu is closed and reopened. Any thoughts on why the adaptive keyboard only works correctly from a single user account or the login-screen? I have a Thinkpad T510 (4384-2RU) running Windows XP and have been experiencing this problem since the day I got it. If I have headphones connected to the audiojack, and then I put the laptop to sleep, after I wake it up again, the sound is gone. Bear in mind that I normally wake it up without having the headphones connected anymore. Sometimes, if I re-connect the headphones, the sound comes back, I can then disconnect them and sound would come out of the normal laptop speakers with no problem. But most times, even if I reconnect the headphones, the audio doesn't come back. I am forced to reboot which is highly annoying. Why does this happen? I have seen that if I wake up the laptop with the headphones still connected, then I don't experience the problem. Also, if put it to sleep without having headphones connected, I also don't have the problem. I have narrowed this down to having audio crashing if I put it to sleep with headphones in, then waking it up without them. This is not how it's supposed to work, I should be able to have audio at all times regardless of whether I have headphones connected to the jack or not. Please note that a solution won't be installing Windows 7, this is a company laptop and they won't let me update the software. How can I fix this problem so it doesn't happen again?

Answer:No audio after resuming from SLEEP on a Thinkpad T510

This happens because the laptop goes to sleep with the speakers disabled and the headphones powered on. To prevent this from happening disconnect the headphones before putting the machine to sleep.

Over the past several years there are many posts of users experiencing variations on this problem with X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga of various generations, including the latest ones (I provide a list below). That is, the systems often cannot come out of sleep mode in some way, shape, or form. I had this problem on my own brand-new X1 Carbon 5th Generation, right out of the box. In my instance, I noticed this issue in the following two scenarios: -After having gone in to sleep mode, once I opened the lid, or press power button once:power light goes from blinking to solid onscreen stays blank/blackseems that if the machine is going to be in the frozen state, keyboard presses do not "unsleep" it (which they normally would). Closing the lid causes the power light to go to solid on, but then opening it again does nothing.in a couple of rarer instances, the machine actually did come out of sleep but then instantly the screen froze (but this was quite uncommon, mostly it just wouldn't come out of sleep at all)-After passing the initial boot screen of Lenovo, the next part shows the Lenovo logo but without the swirling dots and is frozen (the power light would show on)Under both conditions: The power light is solid onThe keyboard lights functionality works: backlighting, FnLock light, mute lightSometimes you can hear the fan workingPlugging in to external display does not display anything on itThe only way to rectify is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power key With... But now: I replaced my harddisk with a SSD, did a fresh install of W7 Ultimate 64. Removed all possible hardware (tv card, usb devices except keyboard / mouse). Tried fail save options in BIOS and optimized settings as well but no luck.
Got most windows updates in place, installed all the latest drivers from the motherboard and graphics card, latest bios drivers and still getting BSOD.

Who can help me solving this so I can save lots of energy.
Followed the manual to attach zip file with minidumps etc. Please let me know when additional info is required.

Details about what happens:
When I put my system into sleep it goes well. When I try to wake my system:
often nothing happens and I have to shut it down holding start button
or I get back my desktop but within a few seconds I get a BSOD.

If I have seen it well I posted several minidumps, so I hope it is not too difficult to find the ones related to the resume from sleep.
Kind regards,

Michel

Answer:BSOD while resuming from sleep, or not resuming from sleep at all

Welcome aboard

Your crash dumps are not showing any finite probable cause. In such a situation, it is better to enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.

Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Let us know the results, with the subsequent crash dumps, if any.

When the system resumes from sleep or from the screen being turned off, the keyboard backlight doesn't resume to its previous setting. VERY annoying when you're trying to work. In this thread they talk about a potential BIOS limitation causing the backlight to not resume after a restart, but what about after sleep?https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/W540-Backlit-keyboard-always-on/td-p/151... By contrast, the X1 Yoga Gen 2, does resume the backlight state after screen off, sleep and even restart! Surely the Carbon should have the same feature set as its brother.

I just got my X1 and the left shift key sticks. I can see the spacing on the top side is not the same as the right shift key, so it's physically catching on something. All the other keys feel really good, but that shift is anoying! I've put in for a RMA replacement. Anyone else have keyboard key problems right out of the box?

Answer:Adaptive Keys - X1 Carbon

Download Lenovo Updater and let it update. The Adaptive Keyboard is just a menace when typing and working my fingers slightly touch the edge of one of the buttons and next thing you know my screen is opening software, going full screen, changing brightness. Plain annoying.

Hi Guys, I'm new in this forum. I'd just like to ask everyone's opinion on a X1 Carbon 2nd Gen that I came across. Everything is the same (i7-4600u, 512gb SSD, the placement of the fingerprint scanner, touchpad), however the unit does not feature the adaptive FN keyboard. Instead it has physical keys... Is this a specific model or done through after market modification? Appreciate your inputs.Thank you.

Hi,  I'm looking for a teardown guide for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon SecondGen, but i can't really find anything good. I've read the PDF from Lenovo, but I'd like to know how hard it is to change the keyboard bezel. The reason for the part change is switching from US keyboard to norwegian keyboard.  I know it is a FRU, but it should be possible to do it on my own. Anyone with experience? Here's the manual from Lenovo: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x1carbon_2_hmm_en_sp40a26110_01.pdf N

On my brand new Carbon X1, the Adatpvie keys are completely dark (blank, unlit, however you call it).  I cannot see the keys at all. Oddly, they still seem to function -- if I hit the bar in the place where I vaguely think the volume controls are located, it does seem to affect the volume.  I simply can't see anything on the bar. I am running Windows 8. Thanks for any suggestions.  I have scoured for drivers to no avail.

I have a Carbon X1 (V2) with Windows 10 Pro loaded.  I suspect it may be missing some software and/or a device driver; Device Manager doesn't seem to know about the adaptive keys. When I start up normally, the function keys work (F1-F12) but the Fn key seems to do nothing, The keyboard backlight key works, none of the others appear to do anything.

Two videos of my X1 having some sort of adaptive keyboard related seizure. https://twitter.com/TerrenceOBrien/status/594134486834614272 https://twitter.com/TerrenceOBrien/status/594143570640121857 Anyone have any ideas? This just started happening randomly one day and I can't get it to stop long enough to actually even attempt to trouble shoot. I managed to restore everythig to the factory original conditions and it slowed down for a bit, but never fully stopped. But within a couple of days it was back to freaking out just like this again.

The adaptive keys on the 2014 X1 Carbon Keyboard seems like the perfect place for multimedia keys such as play/pause/fast forward/rewind but I am suprised to see them missing. Is this something that could be added in a future update?

Answer:X1 Carbon Adaptive Keys - Multimedia functions

Take a closer look at the dynamic keyboard row. These are preset keys. They are not rendered. They are just illuminated touch keys, nothing more than that ;-)But nobody uses these play/pause/rewind keys. Why use those keys if you have your window open, right? And plus not all software supports multimedia keys.ThinkPads aren't multimedia laptops, they are meant for business, conferencing, etc.

Hi I am using Debian on my X1, everything seems to work generally except that I loose the adaptive fn keys. When I resume everything gets back to where they were except fn. It looks like the fn keys lcd looses power, because I do nto see any light activity what soever. I realize Lenovo recommends Windows, but I cannot use Win due to my job. I am wondering if anyone can offer me a solution regarding the fn keys situation. thanks

This has started happening a few days after upgrading to 8.1 and happened around the same time my facebook app greyed out and would not work at all. I have since deleted the facebook app and reinstalled and it is working fine but I am still getting a black "resuming" screen for about 5 seconds everytime I press the wake up button before I can even unlock my phone. I have tried turning my phone off a number of times but no luck there. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Answer:Why is my Lumia 920 taking time resuming everytime?

You probably would have found the fix if you had searched.
Go enable kids corner, then disable it.
Its caused by some remnants of the live lockscreen app being left behind.

I recently reset my 2nd Gen X1 Carbon Touch using a custom Windows 8.1 Pro image, which meant that all the Lenovo apps were not installed. I did reinstall most of them, but I can't seem to find the Adaptive Keys settings on the laptop and on the web, and the laptop's Adaptive Keys only showed the (working) function key row. What should I do? Hopefully someone answers back as soon as possible, and thank you.

Answer:Where to download Adaptive Keys settings on X1 Carbon Touch (2nd Gen)

Apparently it's a part of the hotkeys package:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X1-Carbon-2014-Adaptive-keyboard/td-p/1439535

You also require the Power Management driver.

Hi, I've got a Toshiba Satellite Pro A120 (1.5 yrs old; Intel core 2 CPU 2.33GHz; 2GB RAM) with Vista Business (SP1 32bit) and often when I put it to sleep, it will hang or crash on resume forcing me to to do a hard shut down. Sometimes the screen will just be totally black and hang, and sometimes it will get to vista's "resuming" splash screen or even the login screen and then hang/crash. Often the disk activity LED will remain on indefinitely (due to the hang) even though I can't hear any disk activity. As far as I'm aware all my drivers are up to date. I'm just so fed up with loosing documents and personal settings now I've got to do something about it, and from googling, it seems this is a pretty widespread problem but I've not come across a solution that's worked for me - I've even installed the extra KB patch that was meant to fix it.

Also, sometimes when I put it to sleep (fully charged) and not use it for a a few hours, I find that the laptop has lost power during sleep because the battery has been run flat and the ventilation grille feels warm, even though I know that the battery can normally last much much longer on sleep. Is it possible that the computer resumed itself from sleep to hibernate after 200 mins on battery (as my power settings dictate) and then crashed whilst resuming, causing it to drain itself flat (since it my laptop should have entered automatic hibernation on the critical battery warning unless it was unable to respond)? Is this a pow... Read more

Hi Issue: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen black screen / 'screen off' on resume from sleep I know this issue has been posted about several times regarding the X1 series but .... none of those threads seem to have any kind of answer to this problem. This seems like quite a horrendous issue for a +1500 to have !! Constantly 'hard rebooting' and losing all my open work is seriously seriously annoying. Please note: My drivers are 100% up to date based on Lenovo's own update software. I have all official Windows 10 updates issued to date (21 aug 17). These are the patterns I've noticed: - It doesn't always replicate the same behaviour: after resume from sleep sometimes it's 'black' and other times it's fine. I'd say 66% of the 'lid openings' it's OK but 33% of cases it's not.- I've found that if I shut the lid again and reopen (often 3 or more times and waiting 30+ seconds on each open then 30+ seconds on each close) then I can eventually 'force' it to turn the screen on.- If I 'manually' set the unit to sleep from the start menu rather than just closing the lid, I'm pretty certain that it *does not* exhibit this problem. I'll be 100% certain once I've tried this a few more times.-  I've removed all USB devices from the laptop one-by-one and waited for the problem to reoccur thus ruling out any single or combination of USB devices.- I have the 'lock screen' shown when it does successfully resume from sleep. - The screen 'blackness' looks t... Hi, I've recently bought a Thinkpad campact bluetooth keyboard and W541.As I've been using a Macbook pro, I expected that a bluetooth keyboard could awake my laptop when it is in sleep mode like a Macbook does.I found that a wired usb keyboard can do that.In device manager, there's the power management tab in Intel Bluetooth, but the allow wake up option is grayed out.Is this a feature W541 doesn't support? If it doesn't, newer Thinkpad models do? I'm using the laptop with the lid closed for the most of time so that I desperately need this.Thank you

I noticed recently after leaving my PC unattended for 30 mins the monitor had turned off but it turned on as soon as I hit the space bar. The Power Settings have the monitor set to never turn off and the hardware sleep function on the monitor is turned off - so it's a mystery why the monitor went to sleep.

I spotted that recent AMD graphics drivers install the AMD Adaptive Sleep Service which is set to Automatic (Delayed Start). I'm wondering if this is the reason the monitor goes to sleep and whether I should just disable the service? What functionality does this service provide and will there be problems if I disable it?

Hi - when I'm in internet explorer, if I accidentally graze the F1 key on my adaptive keyboard, about 1000 internet explorer help windows start popping up, quicker than I can close them down. I already know it's not possible to disable the adapative keyboard itself (unless by some miracle of God this has changed since I last asked?!), much as I would like to, but is it possible to stop this specific thing happening - also I can't run a pop-up blocker because it's a work device and I'm not allowed to install stuff. In conclusion: adaptive keyboard = sadness

I have a Lenovo T61 running WinXP SP2. Every time I try to resume the computer after it had been in standby mode, I am taken to the login screen and the computer returns to sleep. But when i resume the second time, it works perfectly fine. So the resume operation works on alternate turns. Same is the case with hibernation.I think it should not be a hardware problem, kindly advise...

Answer:T61 again goes to sleep after resuming

we have the same kind of problem on all of our company notebooks (T61). We use windows 2000. After installing McAfees Safeboot Software, the computer goes to hibernate mode again, ~ 30 secondes after the computer woke up from hibernate. the problems only appear when using the advanced docking station.

...will not connect me back to internet.
It just says unidentified network and no internet access, solution is to disable and enable my adapter but it gets quite annoying.

I've noticed this before on my bro's laptop but solution to stop it from happening was never found.

I got asus P5Q-Pro p45 chipset and my card is
"Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller(NDIS6.20)" Yep, copied it from device manager .

This problem is recent, been running windows 7600 professional x64 for some time but never had it happen before on this computer, since now.

I haven't really done anything that could affect it, no new drivers, well nothing related to networking at functionality level... except 1 thing from bios.
Changing sleep mode to s3 which I believe is default because everything shuts down, except ram and that stuff to keep it alive.

Obviously, I'm going to try turning it off.
I believe this is not even rare case but I've not seen much discussion on this so... yeah.

My HP Envy 13 (d008na) laptop doesn't wake up from sleep.  I've run all trouble shooting from HP & Microsoft, done a full system recovery, rolled back to previous BIOS and spoken to HP tech support and the problem still persists.  After sleep, when I open the lid, press the power button or any key, nothing happens except the flashing power button light goes out.  The only way to boot is to hold the power button for 5 seconds and then press again to boot losing any unsaved work. I've now noticed that even after a normal shutdown, pressing the power button just produces a short flash of the power light (2-3 seconds) and nothing else.  If I leave the computer for a few minutes it will then boot up with a single press of the power button. Can anyone help?
