I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello.  I just purchased a Lenovo 3000 N200 and soon made a mess of things by changing the name of the computer on the network.  Seems like this confused the fingerprint software so I no longer can login using fingerprints as I get an "illegal machine name" message upon trying.  I tried to go into the fingerprint software to see if I could fix this but found nothing there that would remedy the situation.  I recon I have to change back to the default machine name and possibly workgroup and delete my fingerprint profile there so I can use my fingerprints to mae a new profile on the machine name I want.  Question is:  What are the default macine Name on this computer as I can't recall...

Answer:Default Machine name on a Network

There is no default machine name. You have to set the name at the first start of your computer.Message Edited by harlekin on 07-09-2008 04:48 PM

Hi Everyone, Teb here with my first post on the forum. I am hoping one of you have run into this problem and have a good solution. I downloaded files that I didn't want, and they have proven to be nothing but trouble. An example of one of the files is an extension call "PriceChop". To remove it I went to the control panel and uninstalled. Then I went into all of the web browsers on my computer, went into the settings, and removed the extensions. They appear to be removed until I restart my computer. I go back into Chrome, and the extension is still there. I decided to download a program called SpyHunter which is a malware remover. I ran the program about 8 times and it is still unable to find and remove the files. I searched and searched but have been unable to find a way to remove the unwanted extensions. It has gotten to the point where the virus removed my Norton anti virus security and is trying to log into windows by itself. My wife woke me up to tell me that my computer was "freaking out". Sure enough it was trying to log into windows. I would see a password being entered and then a log in attempt. I am at the point where I just wanted to factory reset. Well, jokes on me. I go into search and typed "reset". I choose to completely reset to factory settings. When it goes to start the process it tells me I have files missing and to insert media. I come to find out that after I upgraded to windows 8.1 via the windows store, I am now unable to factory reset. Something about ... Read more

Answer:Can't factory reset my windows 8 machine

If you could get your hands on a Windows 8.1 disk/USB then you can use that to boot into the advanced options and reset the PC. As most helpers and advisors on here would probably agree, resetting the PC should always be a last-ditch effort when all other options were exhausted. You could try visiting the malware removal forum: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/ and posting the logs requested to get help by a trained BC member.

First let me say that I am an older engineer so not necessarily a computer whiz - so I will need instructions on how to "do" the logs. But I learn quickly! I am in charge of our home network, which includes one wired desktop and 2-3 wireless laptops (all running Windows XP). We have a (HP Home Server) network server for backup. It appears that we had a security breach - possibly due to the Java update. I have used Norton Antivirus and 360, McAfee, and Malware Bytes. I have also tried Kaspersky and GMER. Oddly, there is no virus or Malware on my computer. Now, the GMER shows some invalid registry entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Security Policy "secrets", but I am not allowed to delete these from the registry even if I change the permissions. The main thing that I have noticed, though, is that this blasted thing has declared itself a "Default User" of my system and has full priviledges to run what it wants to. I cannot figure out a way to remove this "User" and as such I guess everything it does can hide from the virus and spyware removal programs.

Please tell me how to get that "log" you ask everyone to send. I am not sure if these machines can be fixed without reinstalling windows, and if so, how? I will have to debug all three computers, one at a time, and then debug the server. I have purchased the Norton 360 for all three machines and have purchased Malwarebytes with the protection as well, and would li... Read more

Greetings,

This question is for my work machine.

I log into an account on the computer along with several other people.

I've recently ran into a problem that another coworker appears to be deaf and maxes out the volume on their account and it carries over to all over accounts. The person does not realize after several attempts to show them that maxing out the volume on the desktop doesn't help and that they should adjust the volume knob on the powered speakers to increase volume if they need to. Otherwise as soon as you turn on the speaker you get everything maxed out even at the lowest volume setting. (You have to turn the knob too get the speaker to turn on and when it turns on its at minimum volume.. )

So is there a way to separate everyone's volume preferences between accounts? I'm really unsure why her personal settings for volume carry over to everyone elses account, specifically me.. I think the person who installed her on the machine also gave her admin rights like myself but the deaf worker isn't as tech savvy as myself.

Any thoughts?

Answer:Win 7 pro default volume per accounts on one machine

There may not be any way to get around this. Generally devices, such as sound, are "global" hardware devices and not controlled by user log in, like user access to certain programs or individual user data, etc.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a machine with Windows 8 pre-installed. About 4 months old, Acer laptop, mid specs.
The laptop would not shutdown or restart, it would just hang, saying 'shutting down' or 'restarting'. I would have to turn it off manually. This never really cleared up. When deleting programs that needed a restart they would never go of course.
I looked up a solution for this, which others had had success with, changing some power options, etc, but nothing helped.
I then decided I'd better do a system restore, but I didn't have any restore points, which seems odd as I had restored it once before.
I then tried to refresh the system (never heard of that option before) and it would again just 'hang' saying 'preparing'. The same for resetting.
I tried to restore to factory settings and came up with those error messages we are all to aware of
After trying to refresh the PC is says the 'drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive to try again'
And after trying to reset 'the PC it says unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing.'
This brought me here. I gather something is up with Windows not fully recognising the C drive which is where Windows is installed. When I click on disk management it says 'connecting to virtual disk service...' but then does nothing.

I've been using comps for 15 years and although not very good at IT have always been able to solve the problems by just reading forums posts of people who have same problem ... Read more

Hi,
I made the stupid mistake of deleting files and programs on my laptop trying to create more space (I eventually got an external hard drive) but I have now messed up my machine.
I have tried to reinstall the Toshiba programs using the tools & utilities cd but I am having programs. For example when I try to reinstall the WinDVD program I get the error message -

'C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe. C:\WINDOWS\system32\autoexec.nt. This system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microdoft Windows applications.' and then a

"Severe Error has occured" message pops up and then a message saying

"This is not a qualified Toshiba Machine" !!

What have I done?! I have tried 'System Restore' but there are no system restore points on my computer which I can back to.
Can anyone tell me how I can wipe everything off my computer and start again? I'm thinking this is going to be the only way.

Any help would be really appreciated.
Thank you
Nikki

Hi,

the best way would be to use the recovery disc. But you should backup your data before reinstalling the system (everything will be deleted).

Current: Win7/64 Ultimate SP1

Ok, I have a game folder from an XP machine that was created by users with admin access, and possibly part of it from Administrator (on that machine).

I think I have two different SYSTEM, etc., owners on my system now.

Because of too many permission problems to elaborate on, and too much futzing around, can I easily (should I?) from every folder and subfolder:

1. Remove the XP generated owners (they're listed in this order):Authenticated Users
SYSTEM
Administrators
Users
2. Then replace them with my (win7/64Ult) machine's owners:Authenticated Users
SYSTEM
Administrators
Users
3. (Making sure that the permissions are inherited from parent of course).
I looked at the tutorials here, and I've tried many things, but am still confused as to whether I should

1. Do this from the folder->properties windows
or
2. Use some combination of secedit or cacls

Basically the way it works in my home, is i get the latest hardware and then i hand down my mobo, cpu, GPU to my kids each of which have their own gaming pc's and their own Microsoft accounts All running Win10... I'd like to have a homegroup running so that we can share video's among machines.

However when i go into HomeGroup on my new build (Win10 Creators Edition 64bit, clean install) its saying xxxx i7 2600k (machine name) is running the homegroup.

Except the i7 2600k isn't even running on the network anymore under that name. Its now associated with my son's Microsoft account.. I did run services.msc and made sure two services, HomeGroup Listener and HomeGroup Provider, on that machine, are both turned off. This machine would have been upgraded to Win10 from 7 a while back, then used my son's credentials on his own microsoft account.

Where is it pulling that xxxx i7 2600k is running the homegroup ? it must be being broadcast from somewhere, as its an old homegroup that's not been in use for a while now. How do i reset it. I do not have an option to delete or leave any homegroup on any machines.. Actually thinking about it, no homegroups have ever been setup on win10, only Win7, so that was a while back... I want to delete any pre-existing homegroup settings and start from scratch, but i can't seem to find an easy way to do it.

Bottom line, i want to delete anything that is preexisting, then create a new homegroup from my new i7 7700k machine.. but going into homeg... Read more

If you find that your app defaults have been reset after you installed the latest Windows 10 build, then this fix will help you resolve the problem. In such a case you will see the following message: An App Default was Reset. An app caused a problem with the default app setting, so it was reset.
Running this registry fix will stop Microsoft Edge, Photos, 3D Builder, Zune Music and Zune Video from taking over your file associations for various files types
Head over to winhelponline to see if you would like to download and use the registry fix.
Alternatively you can also manually set the default programs.
Another way is to uninstall the Update that cause this issue and use this tool to hide and stop the update from being installed on your Windows 10 computer.

Today, again, I got several 'An App Default Was Reset' notifications again, after I went thru great length to stop MS from doing this, up and including a rather Draconian registry patch:

Without turning this into a rant, I wish to express, in the strongest possible terms, that I find Microsoft's position in this totally UNACCEPTABLE. They do not decide which programs I use. Period.

I have computers running in XP Pro SP3. Im running an application which often conflicts with windows updates; therefore, I need to turn off automatic update. I disabled and stopped the service but the service changes to automatic by itself. I have asked the network administrator to setup a group policy to disable AU and it didn't work. I then tried to change the registery by following the steps on this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892894/en-us but the AU still comes back.I log in to a domain with local administrator privilage, and this happens right after I updated from SP2 to SP3. If Spybot gives you a warning about a potential Hijacker of your style sheets, it may be indicative of a larger problem. I'd advise you get HijackThis . This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Run the scan, save the log, but do not fix anything yet. Many files it finds are harmless, and required for your system to operate.

Post your log in a new thread in the HijackThis Log Help forum. This our dedicated spyware/virus forum. One of the expert analysts there will look over your log and assist you. Please include a brief description of the problem you are having and what you have done to fix it so far.

I have now been trying to suspend services to find out which one(s) are affecting the mouse. To no avail. I would now like to reset all the services to the original default settings. Is that possible? I do not know which ones I have disabled or "manualized" so I am looking for a general setting reset. Thank you for any help or suggestions on this. Now the title may make my problem sound simple... but it's had me stumped long enough that I need to seek help. I've recently reinstalled my computer (XP Home) and transfered most of my files including some favourite themes. Of course, in my eagerness to set up my computer how I had it previously, I forgot the all-important patch that allows me to change the appearance themes.

So now I have a black background with black text and I can't see anything to change it back. I can see icons but everything else is indistinguishable from the black hole that has become my screen. I know to change themes using control panel and I know to change them with a right click, then properties on the desktop - neither of which help when you can't see anything.

I was hoping I could reset to default settings using cmd prompt or the admin account in safe mode (as my account is still black on black in safe mode) but don't know how.

I've also scoured the internet with little use.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers :S

Now to obtain the smallest REGISTRY? My REGISTRY is completely corrupt, how to be reset to default? What must I retain to be able to launch XP.

Can U delete the whole REGISTRY and still launch XP with I/O functioning ?

Please Help.

Would XP launch with NO REG files ?

Answer:Registry Default ? Reset ?

No, Every Windows file and program has at least one Registry entry if not dozens or hundreds. No Registry, then you have no Windows. Unless you made a backup of your registry, you cannot set it to default.
Can you explain what is your problem and we can offer some solutions?
Can you boot the computer? If so, go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing System files.
You can also do a Repair Install to replace any corrupted Registry files.

I was trying to repair a corrupt windows\system32\config\system file using the recovery console - that did not work. Now, when I use the recovery console I am asked for an administrator password, which of course I do not know.

A further complication is that the machine is configured with RAID (striped disks using Intel Matrix), so booting from any kind of recovery disk requires further drivers to be loaded.

The ERD password reset tool I am using (not sure of the name but it is Linux based, and free) seems to allow support for RAID, but I can not get it to work (NTFS signature missing). I have tried 'fetching' the drivers from a floppy, but that does not seem to help.

So where can I go from here? Are there any other password recovery tools that definitely support Intel Matrix Raid?

Answer:Recovery Console password reset on RAID machine?

Managed to fix it with the following steps:

1. Installed a 3rd IDE hard disk,
2. Installed XP (slipstreamed with RAID drivers) on the new drive and booted from it,
3. Installed RAID driver,
4. Copied backupsof the registry files from the system restore area

I'm always doing the weirdest configurations

The point here is that I need to run a service which uses a very high ammount of traffic (in WAN terms, the LAN wouldn't be affected since it's 2 MBs/sec top).

So instead of having 2 boxes, I want certain services to go out through the physical NIC's default gateway (one ISP) and all the traffic generated by the VM, through the other ISP.

How can that be done? I can use either VM Ware, Microsoft's solution or Virtual Box, since I still don't have anything set-up.

I did some testing.... using VM Ware with the VM configured as directly connected to the network, I used on the virtual NIC the secondary ISP's router address, as the default gateway, but all the traffic ended up going through the primary ISP.

Show me your ideas, please

Answer:A virtual machine: how to use a different default gateway than the physical host?

Most virtualization software has a bridge driver separate from the physical NIC drivers. This means that when in bridged mode, the guest machine can be configured with completely independent IP settings. If you have the VM configured to go out a secondary gateway, everything should work as expected. I have done this before for various test set ups.

Hi folks,
Here's the $0.000064000 question. I have a usb network adapter (RTL SU8192) I want to send to my ex's son the wifi adapter I set his computer up with died. catch is I don't remember the wifi password so I want windows to use the stored one if I download the realtek driver it will install an app and take over the connection. I know windows 7 has a driver on windows update, and I'm hoping that if I could download that to cd he could install the default windows driver and maybe then connect with the stored wifi password.
Any of you know how I could get a manual download of the driver files from windowsupdate for a stand alone machine?

When I go to start, and choose the shut down option. It brings up the window with all the options. Like Sleep, restart, etc.

Sleep is always the first one. Can I change that so that restart is first?

Answer:Can I change the default option when I go to shut down my machine in Vista

That button does not do that like in XP.
You can program it to do what you want. Shut down, Sleep, whatever.

But it doesn't bring up a menu anymore (at least on any of the Vista machines I have ever seen). If you click the little arrow to the right you get options like Restart, Sleep, and Shut Down.

I have a USB drive that turns whatever file or folder you put into it into a shortcut (*.ink) file. My sister tried to put a video on it and open it on my laptop, but she tried to open it with Windows Media Player. Of course, it worked fine, but now every shortcut wants to open with Media Player. I tried doing system restores, but nothing worked. Is there a way I can fix this?

Answer:How do I reset the shortcuts default program?

Hello JunerEclipse, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you could download the .reg file for the listed .lnk option in the tutorial below to easily restore the default associations of .lnk files as needed.

Hi All,

I have a Dell inspirion 15 laptop running Windows 8.1. A while ago I decided to try Ubuntu out. I installed it alongside Windows 8.1 in dual boot configuration with its own separate hard drive partitions. This means that when I powered on my laptop a GRUB menu (Linux?s boot manager) would come up allowing me to choose between Windows and Ubuntu. However, Ubuntu was more pain than it was worth so I decided to uninstall it. I did this by deleting the hard drive partitions that Ubuntu was installed on using Windows Disk Management. Now when I power on my laptop the GRUB menu still comes up but there are no options to choose from, only a command line interface. I now have to type
Code:
exit

which exits GRUB and takes me to my BIOS Boot Manager which looks like this:

Boot mode is set to: UEFI; Secure boot: OFF

UEFI BOOT
ubuntu (ST500LM012 HN-M500MBB)
UEFI Onboard LAN IPv6
UEFI Onboard LAN IPv4
Ubuntu (ST500LM012 HN-M500MBB)
Windows Boot Manager (ST500LM012 HN-M500MBB)
I then have to select Windows Boot Manager to boot into windows.

Does anyone know why GRUB is still there even though I have deleted the Linux hard drive partitions? Also, why is Ubuntu still listed on the BIOS Boot options? And why is it listed twice?

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me,

William Dry.

Does anyone know of a way to reset all of Windows 7's option to their default values? No, I don't mean formatting or system restore. Just a non-destructive method that won't blow away applications and data.

We purchase our work PCs from a local shop, and they seem to think that it's a great idea to toy around with the settings before shipping their machines out. Just today I was wondering why Windows 7 wasn't doing it's usual awesome job at finding and installing drivers for a printer, when the Solution Center popped up with a message stating that the feature had been turned off. Epic.

Anyhow, if there's some way to reset all Windows 7 options to default, I could be sure that all the users have the same configuration rather then wonder why X person's machine can't install printers, or Y person's machine isn't using some other OMFG-this-useful-feature-wasn't-in-XP-kill-it-with-fire option.

Has anyone else experienced default apps in windows 10 being automatically reset?

It seems to dislike VLC and Irfanview and resets defaults to Microsoft apps.

Answer:Default apps being reset by Windows

Hello, if you search the forum you will find a good number of threads on this topic.

The culprit identified in two cases where defaults have been reset on restart has been surprising - an old version of a program. How and why that happens is not known.
In particular, old versions of Winzip. There was one other- a game I think.

So I have suggested running the best update checker, Sumo - free- (the lite version or 'nork' without adware) and check for significantly out of date programs.

However you may be experiencing a different effect. From Win 8, MS disallowed apps setting defaults. That is, you might see the association change until you restart if you set defaults from within a program. Only 1 or two warn about this. Thus defaults must be set using Windows Settings or Control Panel Default Programs or Open With.

Please post back if you identify your culprit. Thanks.

I bet you overclocked your computer by accident.Remove the CMOS battery and leave it out for half an hour or so.This should clear  the BIOS of your changes. Then put it back in, and start t up again.Does it work now?And while you're doing that, write out 100 times on a piece of paper "I must not fool around with things unless I understand them or the consequences could be worse next time"I do hope that this fixes your problem, but it may be too late.Have a bit of care next time.

This afternoon, I shut my laptop (while still on). I had been playing a Shockwave.com downloaded game (which I paused and ctrl+alt+deleted into task manager and went to look up something online and never went back to the game - because I forgot I was playing it). When I came back to my laptop later and opened it back up, everything was off! (much bigger ... I'm not too tech savvy but you know when a game is loading on your computer and for a second before it starts up you can see your desktop and the icons are bigger etc? Yeah my entire computer is like that now.) Even my web browser ... nothing fits in the screen anymore and it's ticking me off. hello & welcome to TSF ,

just for starters I would like you to do this

now what i need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now go to the (event veiwer) this is thru the (administrator tools) in the control panel
here you will find 3 to 4 subcatagories

you will want to check each of them for this is where windows keeps track of all errors
now you will want to make notes of the errors that have been recorded ( you do not have to make notes of double entries just of the dates of their happenings & how many there is)
you will get more information on the errors if you (right) click them / then select properties

also

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

We have several e-mail accounts that Outlook 2003 processes.  Our main source is a .pop account which I have to manually set as my default everytime that I shut down my computer or logoff.  I go through "Tools", "E-mail Accounts...", "View or Change Existing E-mail Accounts" and reset it to the default that I desire. There is a Microsoft Server Exchange account as well, which is reset to the default everytime I log off or shut down. This causes a problem when I send an e-mail to another person, my e-mail shows up to them as ****@***.local instead of .com which then does not allow them to reply to me.How can I get the default to stay as the .pop account instead of the Microsoft Server Exchange?

I got stumped today on a routine issue and am embarrassed :-o

Turns out there are a zillion posts on this topic and even an aftermarket applet to fixit, howbeit at high cost of background-process, invocation, options to set, yuck.

Click a shortcut link to access some page via IE7 [and/or 8] and the window that pops up is very small relative to the monitor/desktop span. Try to reset it and it does not "take". The usual prescription is ... "click a shortcut, grab a corner and resize the window, press either/or Ctrl or Shift key and while holding, exit the window [differences on HOW to exit]".

In my experiments with two sys's having this issue, the 'fix' does not remedy.

I have just gone through the procedure to update a computer with very limited hard drive space from SP2 to SP3.

To "shoe horn" the 325MB file into this machine and install SP3, required me to trim all excess fat from the XP environment. This included getting rid of Many "un-needed" background services, like "Network Connections" and such.

Now I have a functional XP-SP3 machine, EXCEPT I can't get it to use the Internet. I get an error on ipconfig /renew, which suggests that my background services are now not right.

Is there an easy way to reset all of my background services, or do I have to go through the services.msc procedure again?

Answer:XP-SP3 I Need to reset XP background services to default

Make sure driver is working in device manager.

Visit and check over (maybe print out)

If that doesn't help, try the winsock fix (can fit on a floppy) incase something got corrupted.

Hi all. I have Word 2007. Printer Brother DCP-165C. It?s not a problem at all, but if I can make it work it would be nice coz sometime I do need it. So here is the story. The default ink setting in MS Word is grayscale, when I want to print in color I?ll just change it temporarily in Word and after Word restarts, the ink setting is reset to grayscale default. However if changed to color and print it, and after that I reprint the same document again without restarting Word, the ink settings would still be color. Is any chance (if any) I could make the ink setting reset after each prints. Without having to restart Word or do manual reset?. Thank u very much in advance.(please excuse my grammar. saw some green line under the sentence while writing this :D)

Answer:Reset default print setting

One option is to "install" the printer twice, the first with the printer properties set to Grayscale and the second with the printer properties set to Color. Now you can choose the "color" printer only when you need it and leave the grayscale one as the default. That is what I do at home. My shared printer is installed on all 4 systems twice so everyone has a Grayscale default and an optional Color printer. This saves on color ink.You can take it one step further and use a Macro attached to a button to print to the Color printer when required.I use this to print to a cheap Brother printer in my office when I don't need the quality of the networked laser printer. It prints to the Brother and then resets the laser to Default. You could do something similar to print to your "two" printers.(I removed the actual server and printer name)Sub PrintBrother()
ActivePrinter = "Brother HL-1440 series"
Application.PrintOut FileName:="", Range:=wdPrintAllDocument, Item:= _
wdPrintDocumentContent, Copies:=1, Pages:=""
ActivePrinter = "\\server_name\printer_name"
End Sub

About two months ago I thought I would move the "Fax" folders to a directory on my data drive. Like others here I keep my data off the OS drive and backup the drive regularly. I do and don't use the Windows default libraries.

In my next backup of my data drive the backup stopped saying I did not have permission to copy Inbox. To be honest I didn't even relate the two events, me moving the Fax folders and the stoppage. I checked my data drive for a folder called INBOX and couldn't find one. It was no big deal to click on the "Continue" button however I did notice that it was also copying some of my data twice, kind of like including a junction point in the copy. I didn't have to time to resolve so I just kept clicking "Continue" to the permission box.

Today I decided to determine what was going on. Using search and some wildcards, low and behold the Inbox appeared and in the path it stated faxes. I finally put two and two together.

So I thought I would undue what I had done. I started the Fax program, click on Tools, click on Fax Settings, click on Advance tab, clicked on Move Folder. I thought I would put it back to c:\programdata\microsoft\windowsNT\MSfax. I did so and ran a test. It no longer stops at the Inbox but it does stop at "SentItems". Went back and checked, the move folder moves everything and there does not appear to be a way to set individual folder locations.

If you have set up System Restore Points on your PC you will be able to restore your system to an earlier point in time. This should reset your system folders back to where they were.

Hello.

How do you remove the white "icon sheet" from icons? For some reason my .swf (Flash) files don't use their standard icon but rather something Vista setup:

It's a like a white sheet of paper and in the middle there's a small icon of the 'Default' one. How do I reset the icon properties so I can see the default icon only?

I've tried the
Default Program > Associate a File Type or a Protocol with a Program list but nothing.

I attached an image of the file icon to this post.

Thanks in advance.

This morning when I opened my account in Windows XP Home Edition SP3 I found that all my sttings had reverted to default as if I had opened a new account. My account prior to yesterday was on the Start button set at small icons with shortcuts to my most used programs etc. My folders were reset from Windows Classic to Windows XP and all my other personal settings had returned to default. All my folders etc are there and nothing is deleted or such just that all my personal; account settings had reverted to default settings. I checked in Event Viewer and found the following four entries at the time I entered my account. Can anyone tell me what they mean and how to avoid this happening again.

Answer:My XP account has been reset to default settings somehow?.

This may help explain what WebFldrs XP is and how to install or remove it. I would think that these events are evidence of an update. Unsure why your settings changed but I have seen things like that happen after updates from microsoft,http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/...ebFldrs-XP.htmlhttp://www.security-forums.com/viewtopic.php?p=96505http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-854-what-is-webfldrsAt any rate I wouldn't be overly concerned about WebFldrs XP as it seems to be a legitimate application in XP.

Hello everyone,

I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem but about two months ago I had a desktop Hijacker replace my wallpaper for me. I was advised to use SmitfraudFix to fix it. Worked great!
Yesterday I wanted to change my wallpaper (first time since the Hijack) and found all of my pictures in the drop down menu. I wouldn't normally care about this except I have over 6000 pictures.
I found some things online but it didn't help me.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
WallPaperDir default value is %SystemRoot%\Web\Wallpaper.
I believe this is correct. At least thats where the default pictures live.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Wallpaper\MRU
Inside the MRU folder There are about as many keys as there are pictures so I'm thinking this is the place. I tried to delete them but they come back after reboot. Something needs editing but it's beyond my scope.
Thanks for your time.

Bill

Have a HP notebook that was dropped. Screen destroyed, but otherwise system works fine. Got screen replaced. Now the system will boot to a BLACK SCREEN with a MOUSE CURSOR only. SAFE BOOT same. SAFE BOOT with COMMAND LINE same. Tried booting to VGA resolution - same results. So I can't get to a UI to do anything. Tried Vista recovery disk, but there doesn't seem to be a way to reset the video driver. Have confirmed by replacing the system disk that the screen is fine (installed Windows 7 RC without a hitch on another disk as boot device. Would really like to retain/recover the original boot drive, but I can't boot from it until I can get the video driver to get stupid enough to handle the replacement screen (which appears to be same resolution as the original judging from the Windows 7 test build). Anyone know of a way to reset to the DEFAULT (generic) video driver on a system when you can't get to the UI for it?

I'm guessing you disabled restore points...

I was fiddling with the settings after connecting via webpage on my Belkin N1 router, and I accidentally switched off NAT.Now, one would assume I could just reconnect and change it back, but nothing I do can get me connected to the page. My wireless doesn't work, nor can any other computer aside from the main terminal connect. The "modem" light on the Belkin is blinking orange, and the "internet" light isn't on at all.Is there any way to reset all my settings to default and erase the memory of the Belkin externally, or just any way I can get back in to my settings? Several people rely on my network. :(

Answer:Belkin default reset? More problems...

Have Vista 64 Home Premium on a Toshiba A505 S6960. Need to know how to reset the time delay -currently about 4 seconds- that Vista pauses before choosing default from menu choices. Sometimes can't get there with this built in mouse in that time period. Can't find any setting for it in the Mouse in Control Panel or in the Toshiba settings. No luck online either.

By mistake, I have executed a wrong command (SL /e:false to disable all event logging instead of clearing it. Got it from another website ).

Now I would like to reset all my event logs to default.
Has someone an idea, how I could apply the steps from this article:
Reset an event log to default settings: Management Services (which is for Windows Server only!)
to my Windows 10 machine?

default bios setup for windows 7x64, getting "my computer" box on startup. need to set to the boot default settings

Answer:please help reset bios to default in windows 7

Your post makes no sense at all. BIOS's aren't setup for operating systems. What do you mean you're getting My Computer box on startup and what does that have to do with the default boot settings??If you're saying that Windows Explorer opens when Windows starts, this is not an uncommon problem. Do a Google search for "Explorer opens at startup" and you will find tons of posts with various ways to fix it.

Hi there

I can't use EDGE as my default browser as I have a few media servers and as has been pointed out that as EDGE is a universal app addresses like 127.0.0.1:8000 (i.e localhost type stuff) are no longer addressable. I need these types of addresses to use the web interface control settings on various of my media servers so I want to reset IE as the default app.

There was a previous question on this but I can't seem to find it any more.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi,

After resetting UEFI to default values, I can't start WIndows because boot goes to UEFI.

The story is this:

I wanted to make a clean install of W10 and for that I had to make some changes in UEFI because it wouldn't allow me otherwise. But after the installation I see that I have some problems with the sleep and fast boot, not working well. So I went to UEFI and reset it to default, saved and exit. On boot, it goes to UEFI once and again. Windows doesn't load.

So I have to do the same changes that I had to do for installing W10. Disable fast boot, etc. And then yes, I get to Windows, but keep having the same sleep and boot problems. Both work really bad in different ways.

Does anybody know what is wrong?

PS: I also did other changes, by the way. I couldn't install W10 because it said that my disk was GPT partition style, so I had to follow some instructions to change that, which wiped my disk and partitions completely and maybe I missed some step...

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Stuck in UEFI after reset to default.

Please post a screenshot of disk management. Also, make sure your boot option is listed as Windows Boot Manager if you are installed in UEFI mode (which the screenshot above will show).
