Preferred Solution: MBSA is not able to complete Scanning getting error "Cannot load security cab file"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Could scan all remote servers previously from same sources and version.  Replaced/updated all cabs and other files associated (C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\MBSA\Cache) with no change.  Removed/re-installed
MBSA 2.2 with not effect.
Local scans appear to function fine, but do not wish to download MBSA on EVERY system we need to scan.
Settings for remote scan are: Check for security updates>Configure computers for Microsoft
Update and scanning prerequisites>Advanced Update Services
options:>Scan using
Microsoft Update only
Have attempted from different systems/OS's, with same results.  Checked firewall for any blocked traffic from both host and scanner, no entries.
Checked Technet/blogged for about two hours, without any positive results. Please advise/assist.

Answer:Using MBSA 2.2 getting error 'Cannot load security CAB file" when attempting to scan any remote systems

Thank you for sending this to the MBSA forums!
If you haven't already, you may want to check the MBSA FAQ located here: specifically under the sections titled, "How can I scan a computer that is protected by a firewall" (to resolve potential DCOM connectivity issues), and "When attempting to scan a remote machine,
why do I see the error 'Cannot deploy security metadata?"
This is also a very misleading error message since the problem could be due to connectivity to the target (client) machines - nothing relating to the CAB file.  In any circumstance, you should not need to install MBSA on all of the target machines to
successfully assess their security state.
Possible solutions include

Confirm the latest WUA client is installed on all target machines (with the files you've already placed in the cache directory, you can simply check the scan option to "Configure computers for Microsoft
Update and scanning prerequisites" - which will update and re-register each target machine with the latest WUA client and the ability to respond to requests from MBSA.
Check whether the target machines have limited disk space (unlikely) Check DCOM settings on both the server - but more likely due to the failure to remotely scan - the target machines.
Change the scan options to further troubleshoot.  Specifically, 'Check for security updates' option uses a DCOM connection ... Read more

so yesterday i went to reset my computer and i got to the part where it said "scanning and repairing drive (c:): 100% complete" it got to 100% pretty fast but after that it never moved it has been stuck like this for around 15 hours what do i do?

Answer:Stuck on "scanning and repairing drive (c:): 100% complete"

At some point, you're going to have to power off and power back on and see what happens. Sigh. Welcome to the wonderful and incredibly exciting world of Windows troubleshooting. If you're lucky, it got stuck after all the important bits were fiddled and things will be OK. If not, you'll have to try again, and may very well end up having to make a clean (re)install, and proceeding from there. But you can't do anything until the PC starts running again. So, cross your fingers, hope for the best, and cycle the power. Then report back here...

Hi There,
My email contacts from MOST of my emails are sending out "False" emails apparently from me. That are not obviously from me, and as it may say in "Subject Line "Re: My Name" most of my contacts security advises not to open the emails.

When I was using a temporary Bigpond Pre-Paid wireless stick, and topped it up $100, every 2 days, it was obvious something was wrong.

Upon calling Bigpond tec, they could see the programme running in the background as "file Scanning" and would refer it to the police.

We (my husband and I) "think" we know who has bought the programme to do this, has reason to watch email conversations between family/business, and high computer knowledge. (not calling anyone anyone here a 'geek" I'm here.

Our super cool Bank Manager, prior sold programmes to IBM (no slouch) and we told him our suspicions, as we blocked all our bank accounts.
Wisely he advised, it isn't the money as would be gone, but malicious and watching all correspondence, with a good reason to as is a high ranked employee in a family run business.

My bank manager with my permission shall legally, look at my computer from his end, but wont illegally advise the person's IP address location (understandably) but would forward to the Police if we wish him to.

Sorry looong post (my 1st) he has put me into the direction of "Net Stat in dos"

Does anyone know where I start or go from here?

I have not gone... Read more

Answer:Computer "Hacked" Rather "File Scanning"

I have now gone to net stat after sending an email from older email address and noticed that at the same time it sent the same email to contacts in that email address (returned as not delivered) also via an email address not recognised, never heard of.
Could or am I sound daft by asking this be the searcher's fake email address.
With net stat it is just under information....information..information and audit.

Can anyone help from this point on?

I have tried seemingly everything bar reinstalling Windows 10 to try to get Firefox to work again.

I've moved my profile to an external HDD, and deleted everywhere I know that Firefox is located:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox (OR)C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla FirefoxC:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\Mozilla\FirefoxC:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updatesC:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla FirefoxPlus even the 'roaming' ones, too
AND used the Advanced scan with Revo Uninstaller to remove every other trace of Firefox - registry included.

But after [the ridiculously long process of] reinstalling firefox, the same error message still keeps appearing!
I've ran out of ideas (and running out of patience) as to why it still keeps saying this.

I don't know if it's just because my computer's so old or not, but seems to take at least something like 10 minutes to install it! And to keep on trying to uninstall it and reinstalling it all the time seems to take forever.

Any help will be much appreciated. I don't like the other webbrowsers, and for the time being I'm using a Mozilla-based on called CLIQZ - but I can't install any addons to it, as it's a "privacy browser".
*edit* sorry, didn't see the 'Browsers and Email' section there, my bad

When I save as my MS Office (v2010) files on network drive it shows error "file is busy, please try again later", but actually it creats new file on given name on save as but all BLANK!!!!!

I read dirrerent places that it could be fault of antivirus so I tried to disable my antivirus and it works fine !!!! so I need to know how to disable only network protection function on my antivirus program which is KASPERSKY INTERNET SECURITY 2011, so I could use my files on network with security on local PC.

Answer:Network Security "on save as file is busy error"

Sounds like to me, that you need to use a different AV program or find the setting within your AV program that is blocking the saving.

I am getting the following error when moving files on the same drive or from one to another:

"Error Moving File or Folder
Cannot remove folder (insert folder name here): The directory is not empty."

This is fairly common (once or twice a month) and it occurs usually with folders containing many subfolders when being moved by explorer gui "Move the selected items", or ctrl-x, ctrl-v . Repeated attempts through the same process seems to move the folders, but the errors increase as the concentration of stubborn folders increases.

There are no event viewer logs corresponding to these errors. (eventvwr.msc: system, or application)

I would have thought this would be a common problem, but extensive searches came up with nothing... so either it is rare, untroubling to others, extremely easy to fix, or my search queries suck. =)
I am going to run Checkdisk to make sure all is well there, and I will repost the likely failure.

Answer:"Error moving file or folder" "directory is not empty" one file left

Occasionally when I am deleting a file, it is difficult, I have to go through process explorer, search for the thread that is strangely(?) associated with that file in explorer (no reasonable dependencies could be linked, nor is the file being viewed), and kill the thread before deletion.

any thoughts?

Thanks =)

Good Day - Just powered desktop up and have a blue background screen with repeating 01010101, etc... pattern. Window pops up and starts a scan - window titled "System Security". Every action is disabled - can only get into system via Safe Mode. Recovery points are all erased except for July 18, however system stalls when trying to recover to July 18. I was able to get a HJT log via a thumb drive using Safe Mode. Please see if there is anything you can do. It's my son's computer - he is neurotic about protecting his computer from viruses, and is leaving for college in 2 weeks - without a PC unless we can get this fixed.

Wanted to resurrect an older thread, but its closed :

Please read completely before responding.
I am a 30 year IT pro, most of it as a programmer. I am the geek in charge of a tech non profit org in Hawaii.
so yea.. i have at least half a clue.

Here is the deal.
In doing drive copies, data recoveries, etc... when we are moving a mass amount of data from one drive to another we run into this problem a lot.
"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"
If you restart the move, it will continue on and keep going, restart enough times and eventually it will move all directories.

I think its a programming issue with windows and wonder if anyone has a work around ?

I have a suspicion that the copy process is getting out of sequence. That it is trying to move a folder before it actually emptied it. Possibilities are :
1) windows forgot its place in moving through and navigating numerous sub directories and it is having a problem with “recursive calls.”
2) Computers with hyper threading or dual core processors are spawning the movement of files across multiple processes, and some are getting ahead of the other.
3) It did actually move the file, but the cache or something in memory has not updated, or the full data write has not completed yet before it tried to move the directory. (delayed write)
Yes, you can copy and then delete the old... Read more

Answer:"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"

This is a known issue. It is by design.

As you may know, moving is in its essence an unsafe process. It would be better to use the actual sequence of copy and then delete.

I want to know how to permanently skip "scanning: system error memory dump files" in the disk cleanup scan. What i am looking for, is a way to remove it from the scan entirely.

WinXP has a similar "feature", "compress old files", and the solution i have found is deleting some registry keys.
xp example:
this is what i am looking for.

Answer:How do i skip "scanning: system error memory dump files"?

(plucked from microsoft answers)
1. Open a Command Window in Administrator mode:
* click Start
* click All Programs, then Accessories
* right click on the Command Prompt option,
* on the drop down menu which appears, click on the Run as Administrator option.
* If you haven’t disabled User Account Control (and you shouldn’t!) you will be asked for authorisation. Click the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password.
2. Start the System File Checker
* In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow,
* press Enter.
* You’ll see “the system scan will begin”.
The scan may take some time and windows will repair/replace any corrupt or missing files. You will be asked to insert your Vista DVD if it’s needed.
Close the Command Prompt Window when the job is finished.
One caveat: you need a Windows DVD to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs.

Good Luck

Hi Everyone,
I'm at a loss . . . I have a client who has Windows 98 and Norton's Antivirus 2002. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 or 4 times to get the Email Scanning to run, as advised on the symantec website, but it still won't do it.

Any suggestions? There isn't another antivirus program running and the only thing I can think of is that the virus he had, which was cleaned off from an online antivirus site, maybe messed something up. (I reran Nortons after the online scan and downloaded all the updates.)

My computer's been giving me all kinds of trouble, including installing XP and then booting from the CD and trying to reinstall it (it refuses to boot from the hdd). So I hooked up an old hdd to it and it boots into Windows 98, but it doesn't detect the other hard drive or the optical drive for some reason. So when I switched it back to booting from the CD first, it actually went into the Windows installation (this was a shocker because before it never did that). However, it said it needed the file "asms" to complete the installation. I told it to look in the D, E and F drives, but it hasn't found it. I then put the installation disc into this computer and searched for "asms" to no avail. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get this file onto the computer? Is there any way to get this file from the hdd with 98 on it? Thanks.

Hard disk formatted with FAT or FAT32 file system
If the hard disk is formatted with the FAT file system or with the FAT32 file system, follow these steps:

1. Use a Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Startup disk with CD-ROM drivers to restart the computer.

2. Copy the Xcopy.exe tool from the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM, the Windows Millennium Edition (Me) CD-ROM, or the hard disk to the Windows Startup disk. To do this, use the appropriate method.

Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM

Insert the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then at the command prompt type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line, where cd-rom is the drive letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive:

copy cd-rom:\win98\smartdrv.exe
copy cd-rom:\tools\oldmsdos\xcopy*.*

Eject the Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) CD-ROM, and then insert the Windows XP Professional CD-ROM.

4. Copy the I386 folder and all its subfolders to the hard disk. To do this, type the following lines at the command prompt where cd-rom is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive, and drive is the drive letter of the hard disk, and then press ENTER after you type each line:

xcopy cd-rom:\i386 drive:\i386 /e

After i have removed some spyware/trojans I starting getting this error message when I try to access the eventlog:

event log "unable to complete the operation on" eg. system "the interface is unknown" windows xp.

Also I can add programs to Symantec internet security 2005 firewall, reinstalling don't fix it. Some programs also start to fail, "bad image" or you don't have admin premissions.

Reinstalling SP2 or using system restore for XP don't fix any thing.

I have scanned my computer with 4 antispyware programs, and 4 antivirus programs and check it with hijackthis so my machine should be clean.

Does any one have any Idears?

Answer:event log "unable to complete the operation on" "the interface is unknown" windo

maybe you removes something with hijackthis which your system needs

go to start, run and type "sfc /scannow"
then it will rpompt you for the XP CD, put it in and let it scan your computer for corrupted or missing files

I was messing with my ASUS N10j and I tried to install Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit on it.

Installation went fine, but then when it wanted to boot up for the first time, it gave me a window that said "Can not open recovery.dat" and a huge red ERROR message appeared in the middle of the screen.

From googling, these guys ( believe its because of a hidden recovery partition. Well, how do I delete that partition if I don't have access to Windows?

The laptop also doesn't have a DVD-drive, so the solution has to be via USB.

I have no clue what to do. Help!

EDIT: Ugh... I guess this is more software related... Sorry.

Answer:Red "ERROR" message because "Can not open file C:Recovery.dat"

Greetings, RommelTJ...

Couple of things you might consider trying:

* Boot to a Linux USB drive, and format your hard drive from that environment - tips on how to create a Mint 7 (Gloria) bootable flash drive can be found here...

* Get your hands on a USB DVD drive, and use it to boot to your Windows disk to delete/recreate any partitions...

Quick question: how are you trying to install Vista without an optical drive?

I'd attempt a clean reinstall, again:

Go into Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl and hit enter.
Remove these applications:
1. Apple Software Update
2. Apple Mobile Device Support
3. iTunes
4. QuickTime

Restart the computer
Download & Install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
Launch the Utility: Start > Programs > Windows Install Clean Up
Select any of the above mentioned applications, and click Remove

Restart the computer again
Download & install iTunes again from here:

Answer:"Quick test on drive 1 did not complete" error on my WD Black Caviar

Hey there,

Status Code = 07 in WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic means the drive fails to read part of the drive and it is likely to soon fail or it already started failing. Once a bad sector appears on a drive, it is highly likely that more would appear (the head would bounce off the physically damaged part and land on a different spot on the platter further damaging it and creating more bad sectors). You could try running chkdsk /r to try locating and isolating any bad sectors it finds, but this would only give you some time for backing up your data. I would advise you to replace that drive. Since it is from the WD Black series, it is likely that it is still under warranty (they usually come with 5 year limited warranty). I would check that and go for RMA.

I wouldn't imagine the slow performance would be only because of the drive. I would do a run-in test to check the CPU, RAM and GPU to make sure they are all OK.

Hope this helps,

Answer:HELP! error message:"memory resources exist to complete the API" seen before welcome

Add any RAM recently? This issue generally has something to do with hibernation mode with systems that have more than 1GB of memory, however this seems unrelated. I would say that your OS is cooked possibly, if it was bad RAM or power supply or mobo it would have more symptons so it is definetly software related in my opinion, my suggestion would be to get the data you need off with a live CD, then install a freash copy of windows.

I have a problem installing Windows 10 on my tablet. When try to install, at the time to restart, shows the error message "Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer restart windows" My computer is a 2 in 1, the Acer Switch One 10, with 2GB of RAM and 32Gb of storage.

I find for a solution. Tried making another bootable USB with media creation tool, and another with Rufus from the ISO file, neither of them works. I have the Fast boot and secure boot disable. Also tried creating and administrator account with MMC on command prompt, but there isn't the option, it says I have to do it from Control Panel. Neither the oobe works, it just shows the blue screen with just a moment... and do nothing (I let it the whole night). I converted the disk to GTP from the USB drive too

Then I found a post in this forum with the same problem than mine, but I can't do the same because I don't have a computer to install Windows 10 with Virtual Box and I don't have a external HDD to clone on it.
Searching on forums it seems that there are many other with this kind of problem with similar devices.

So, I installed The Sims Complete Collection, but I decided that I really wouldn't use it as much as I thought, so I decided to uninstall it. After doing so, little error messages pop up every 2-10 seconds on my computer, one after another, and if I leave my computer to go to the bathroom or something, there will be a whole slew of them, one on top of another that I have to exit. They say: "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\wmrutrim.dll" and under that, "Access is denied." To the left of the words is s red circle with a white x in the center and on my taskbar the window is labeled "RUNDLL".

I did some research and found that some file was probably deleted when I uninstalled the game, but I looked on a bunch of "dll" file download sites and couldn't find my error.

Some sites also said to reinstall the program that caused the problem, but the Sims Complete Collection is 4 disks and takes hours to install. I also don't want it on my computer.

I also tried restoring my computer with the system restore disk that came with it, but it didn't restore, even though I have done it before and followed the procedure outlined on the disk exactly.

The message comes up so often that I cannot do anything else without being constantly interrupted (i.e. while typing this at least 15 have popped up already and I have to constantly exit them and come back to this).

Please help! I tried to use the Sims help forum but something went wrong and ... Read more

I am infected with this crap and have used the following tools to try to get rid of it:
Windows Defender, Unible PowerSuite (SpeedUpMyPC, Registry Booster & Spyware Protector) and Norton's One Button Checkup and WinDoctor.

Not sure if it's related, but my DISPLAY is locked at 640 X 480.

Atempted the 5 Step Process before posting and Panda ActiveScan froze and crashed after scanning 59253 files, but not before identifying 28 spyware files.

Hello, to you new Windows Vista and XPS users...
When you run "Install" The Sims Complete Collection, install it, then play the game, use it for a while... save it and bam! "An error has been encountered". Don't get worked up, look up the game's system configuration requirements, see if your computer is working correctly, check to see if background tasks are running (background tasks will coinsedentially harm your game while playing it), log in to and EA Tech Help, or just reinstall it.
Still having trouble... reboot your computer up, try the game again, erase computer memory (Windows Diagnostics Tool <CD Key may need required to do so>), and/or just use Windows XP/XPS only. Windows(TM) Vista cannot play certain CD games for your information so you know.

Hi Everyone! I thought I had a pretty secure machine but I have learned otherwise.

As instructed, I am trying to start the process of asking for help here on, but FARBAR keeps giving me the error "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk1\DR1"

I hit Cancel, Try Again, or Continue and nothing closes. The error message just pops up again.

I have not rebooted yet, bc I was hoping to leave things intact for now. Short of rebooting, does anyone have any suggestions? There are no USB drives attached.

Answer:Cannot get FARBAR to complete. Error "There is no disk in the drive..."

Well, I shut down the Event Viewer and the error window went away, and FARBAR completed running.

Strange but glad I can continue!

i've recently installed win XP on my system, and it seems to work without a hitch. however, i've reinstalled my Photoshop CS2 as well and i'm getting this ridiculous error after using the program for a bit.. i can still paint onto a canvas and whatnot, but a ton of stuff will suddenly refuse to work anymore such as SAVING, or creating a new document, etc..

i get the error "Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory (RAM)".

this doesn't make any sense.. i have 2 gigs of ram. my photoshop is only taking up about 136mb of ram while i'm using it (even when the errors occur). my cpu usage is also below 15%, and my page file usage is low at like 472 mb.

meanwhile, i have page files setup on both my 80 gig and 300 gig harddrives.. allocated to a maximum of about 4 gigs each (all setup in windows virtual memory).

on TOP of that, i have photoshop using a scratch disk on both of my harddrives as well, and it's also set to use 55% of my memory usage.

basically, i can't see one single reason why this would be happening. it's sooo frustrating, because the problem won't stop until i close the program (losing all of my work) and restarting it.

it's not a physical hardware problem, i've checked my ram out and no other applications have given me this issue. i've also tried reinstalling CS2 twice on the system.. it still happens.

what else could it possibly be?? this NEVER happened on win2k. ... Read more

Answer:photoshop error: "could not complete request, not enough memory (ram)" ?!

I don't know if this is the cause of the problem, but it's never recommended to split the page file up. Go back and set Xp to use your primary drive for the pagefile, and let XP manage it (as a test). Then configure Photoshop to use the second drive for it's scratch file. Both should be single files, but on separate drives.

It's okay here, because it's an OS problem.

Hi guys,

I have been trying to clean install windows 10 home 32 bit on my Acer one S1003 laptop (which came with pre installed win 10 home) since two days. The installation keeps giving me the "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation." error.

The laptop is a two in one computer with 2GB ram and 32GB flash storage and has only UEFI firmware. The usb drive I use to install windows has GPT partition scheme which I made with Rufus.

And I tried firing up a cmd and launching OOBE but that only leads to a loading screen which loads forever. Then I disabled secure boot and that didnt work either. Finally I tried to flash the bios but couldn't do it as there was no any UEFI compatible DOS version.

What's going on here? how can I install windows on this machine??

Hi people,

I hope we have some Photoshop wizards here.

A user is getting the above error when opening images in Photoshop CS3.
Weird thing is, he can open images fine, but when he saves them and tries to open them again, he gets the above error message.
Now I've tried these things to no avail:

Reset the configuration using Ctrl + Alt + Shift on the splash screen.
Reinstalling Adobe CS3.
Resetting thick client profile + deleting local profile.
Tried on my own account (with limited privilidges like his own account), same problem.
Tried with administrator account, no issues opening the file(s).

Any ideas that may help?

I'm very frustrated. I use Mozilla FF browser.

All of a sudden, as of yesterday, I can't watch videos on Youtube , can't play Webkinz, etc

because I am getting a message saying that
I have to download the latest Adobe flash player

When I try to do it, I can't cause I get a message saying that
the "Security Zone won't allow it".Then I try to use the Manual setting and it says the 'no downloads because it was blocked'

I have had NO problem until coincidentally , YESTERDAY, I received a message from my Norton Antivrus program to "UPDATE" and so I did.

Does anyone know the problem?

Thank you so much in advance.

As of the last week, have been experiencing issues with extreme slowness. Reset Firefox to defaults, did not help. PC slows/freezes, when tried to launch task manager, CTRL-ALT-DEL, get message "Failed to load security options" then screen stays black with only that message. At times never unfreezes. After a hard re-boot, goes straight to recovery mode. I have noticed that there are certain error messages such as failed updates. And also, my security defaults have been "turned off" at least once without my doing......... Yikes! I have done a recovery to previous date, and that has helped, but then it starts all over again.... Certain start up items dont load and then the freeze comes again. And again the "Failed to load security options".....

Here are the logs... I believe i got them all....

Hi y'all,

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem, so if I am in the wrong place, I apologize. I cannot access a photo file folder that is on an external hard drive. Depending on how I try to get to the file, I get either a "corrupt file" message or "i/o error message". I cannot delete the folder, cannot move the folder, and I can't do a defrag on that hard drive because of the folder. Chkdsk did not show any problems with the hard drive. I have just gone through the deep cleaning as listed on this forum, but nothing out of the way showed up on my external hard drive. I would appreciate any help with solving this problem. Stats: hp pavilion760N, win xp, service pack 2, seabolt external 160 gigharddrive with 45gig free. Thanks, Diane

Answer:get either "file corrupted" or "i/o error message"

Does the error message arise when you access the file or the folder? If it is only the file, then I would recommend getting everything else off of the external temporarily and then getting a tool from the external drive vendor to reformat. You lose the file but regain the drive.

I am trying to find the file under docs and settings where my AV is telling me I have a whole bunch of viruses. Only thing is that when I search for the file it isn't there. Even when I search sub files and hidden files. Any help on how I could find this file. All of the files the AV is finding are all zip files that I haven't dled.

Answer:need help finding "complete" file

Follow these instructions carefully

Download ALL 8 programs and update if needed.

Ad Aware SE Personal Free

Spybot Search and Destroy Free

Windows Defender 2 Beta

HijackThis Free

Follow these steps

Delete the prefetch folder C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch, this folder will come back on next reboot.

Delete all cookies and temporary internet files in the control panel.

Go to Start, run, type msconfig, go to startup, disable everything except your antivirus, Firewall, click apply, dont reboot yet.

Download Msconfig Cleanup below

Msconfig Cleanup Free

Run Msconfig Cleanup after you unchecked the items you were told to uncheck and recheck, click "Select All", then click "Clean up Selected", then click "Quit". Make sure your antivirus and firewall are not checked.

Now run each spyware program 1 by 1. Running all 3 at the same time will slow most systems down.

When each program has finished scanning, remove everything.

Now go to the recycle bin and delete everything that is in it.

When finished with the scans, reboot, and go into Safe Mode and run these scans again, remove everything they find, and then reboot back into Windows in normal mode. You dont need to run Hijackthis! yet.

Then run HiJackthis!

Save the log, copy and paste the log on
Do not attach the log, copy and paste always. This will make things go much faster.

My computer recently crashed; I didn't pay attention to the first message because, like most people, I'm constantly getting an error message of some type so I didn't pay much attention to this one - until the screen requested the installation CD to be run. Just in the last day it transpires that whenever I click on a file or folder, a window comes up with "Comodo Cloud" on top in the blue part. Underneath to the left is an "X" encircled in red. To the right of it is the message "Could not load language file. Please reinstall the application." Underneath, one choice, "OK". When this shows, it is accompanied by the well-known, unpleasant Windows honk.

Fortunately when I ignore the window and click it out, I'm able to work with the file or folder. But I'd like to get rid of this nuisance.

I have no Comodo Cloud program. In fact, I just uninstalled the non-functional Comodo Backup program. I do have a number of Comodo products, including Comodo DNS, but nothing real-time other than it.

So on my computer, every time i start up my computer, it goes to the the starting windows screen, but then it sends me to the "checking file system on C: the type of the file system is NTFS. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. you may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. Last week I downloaded a Trojan dialler which got sorted out by the "Hijackhis crew". Unfortunately, I followed their recommendations a bit too fanatically by downloading a new "Hosts" file.

Could anyone tell me how?

Today I got this error. I was in a rush and moved my entire My Documents folder to my desktop to do some work and then shut my computer off. When I restarted it did a ChkDsk which seemed to fix the profile problem as everything is normal, but my entire My Documents folder is empty and none of the files are anywhere to be seen.

Tomorrow I plan to take it to a shop and see if they can get the data off the harddrive somehow but is there anything else I can do?

First off, I'm not sure this is the correct forum, secondly I know it's not strictly a W7 problem, but, I'm now so desperate I'll try anything.

In Firefox the home page is set to Google search by default. When I type in a search it works as expected. If however I try to modify the search in the same window a popup comes up saying "Application/json" is ready to dowload a file, where do I want to save it? In fact multiple popups open (could be upto 10)

It doesn'e matter if you choose to download or not, nothing happens. It just keeps repeating the loop.

Does anybody know what is going on and how to stop it?

I'm getting no response from either Google or Firfox on this issue.

I am trying to uninstall Yahoo Messenger using Add/Remove Programs. It won't let me and this error message comes up.

Can someone help?

Thanks...and have a great day! Note: Just registered and first time poster.

Answer:Solved: Error: "Could not open "INSTALL.LOG file"

You have most likely run a Cleaning program that has the option to delete LOG files.
Some LOG files are just that. Files that "log" activity.

But some, like the one you reference, contain information about how to UNinstall that application.

In this case, I would reinstall Yahoo Messenger, and THEN uninstall it.

Hi, I have been struggling with this issue for quite a while now, I googled a lot before but I'm unable to find a way to solve it, so I'm going to ask it here, hopefully someone can help me.
I'm using Windows 10 Version 1703 (OS Build: 15063.483) (latest as for today)

First time I noticed the issue was when I tried to run Powershell via Node.js (rebuilding node-gyp), Powershell crashed without any message, so I thought it was Powershell's issue, but when I tried to run it, I had the following message:

This picture shows "System.Transactions" failing, but any other software that requieres any System.X (such as System.Web or so) will fail to run correctly.

I have already tried by reinstalling .NET a few times, since that's the most logical way to fix it, but didn't work. Also when I Googled, 90% of the issues were in Visual Studio references, this issue doesn't only affect VS, but any Windows software, I have never worked with Visual Studio.

Hello everyone
Recently, I'm playing Anno 1404 (also called Dawn of Discovery) in my Vista Home Basic 32bit finely until I saw the problem with the "save/load" problem. First, it saves "systematically" but, the save is corrupted to a 5kb file. Second, the game can't load the 'properlly saved' save file, and also the corrupted one also.

Few of the players had the similar problem, and someone said that making another user account works, and I tried and really worked for me. Yes, I can play this way, but all of my files and infos are saved in the Administrator account, and I don't want to switch users just to play that game

Recently I found a useful MS program, which is runas, and found how to run as another account. It asks for the account pw, and everythis was fine, but it doesn't run my game
It just closes the cmd and nothing happens. What could be this problem?
I hope Ubi gives out this fixing patch fast

Answer:Anno 1404 "save/load" problem and using "runas.exe"

Figured it out with Runasspc program (which also saves the password! )

Okay, here goes..
I am having serious trouble reinstalling windows. My system is:
P4 3.8
1gig ram
MSI 925XE Neo board with Intel 925XE chipset
2 Maxtor 250gig hard drives in RAID 0 (stripped) (i think)

I seem to be missing vital files for the Intel 82801FR SATA RAID controller.
Whats happens is; I run my recovery disk, press F6 to load the controller drivers and insert the floppy. I then choose the SCSI adaptor from the list (82801FR). It then seems to load the file 'iaStor.sys'. After then pressing enter, setup loads some more files then gives me the option to delete the existing partition and then select the unpartitioned space. I then choose to format the partition using NTFS. Then it formats and shows this info;

c/partition 1 (new Raw) 478742 free space
478742 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on iaStor (MBR)

Once the formatting is finished i recieve the message;

Set up cannot copy the file: iaStor.sys
To skip press esc

Answer:"Setup cannot load the file: iaStor.sys" My god please help!!

As you seem to have already determined Windows needs to load the drivers for the HDD(s) very early in the installation process, and normally these would be loaded from a floppy as you are doing.

You seem to be a little unsure of what exactly you have in terms of your physical hard disks. For a start it is essential that you obtain the correct drivers for whatever configuration you have decided upon. Normally the best place to obtain these is from the manufacturers site. (See link below).

In the raw state disks have relatively little (if any) "intelligence". The "intelligence" comes from the driver. Now the same model of disk (e.g. a Maxtor 6L250R0) can be configured in a number of ways, depending on which driver you use and with some models you may have to actually set a jumper on the motherboard (Most Maxtor SATA disks don't require a jumper setting - even if the installation instructions say they do - so check the latest information sheet carefully).

While you are visiting the disk manufacturers site make sure that you search the Knowledgebase for information relevant to what you are trying to do.

Drivers are often Region-specific, so make sure that you go to the correct site depending on where you live. Click the link below and then on the top Menu Bar click on Worldwide Support, select your Region from the map and then select your preferred language. The site contains a wealth of information, all the current driivers as downloads and contact i... Read more

Answer:"Could not load file or assembly 'MOM.Implementation"

This means you either didn't install the .Net Framework thats required for the AMD CCC to work or it's damaged and needs to be reinstalled.

Depending on the AMD version you have, you need to have either version 2.0 or 4.0 installed, the latest versions use 4.0. Start with 4.0 and download from here:
.Net Framework 2.0 can be downloaded from here:
It's normal to have different versions installed, different programs require different versions and all version can co-exist with each other.

You can also download the latest AMD software for the HD 4200 from here:

Right, so my 8 year old laptop is refusing to start up. Every time I try, I get a BSOD with the message

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

I've tried to boot from my installation disk but it won't let me - it goes straight to the BSOD. Any fixes to this at all?

Answer:"Registry cannot load Hive File..."

Hi OG, The only thing that comes to my mind is that changing the boot order to allow the computer to boot the CD rom drive first might let you boot from the XP disk. It seems like whats happening is that either your hard drive has gone bad or windows is in such a state that C: can't even load boot.ini. That said changing the boot order should allow the CD to boot and you should be able to go from there. Try powering the computer on and immediately pressing the F2, F8, F12, or Del key which ever key your particular computer uses to enter the bios. If you are able to get into the Bios use the arrow keys to navigate to the boot order and then change it to boot form the CD rom drive first. Make sure you save the settings and turn off the computer. Then place your CD in the drive and hit the power button. Hopefully that will get you to where you need to go to correct the problem with the XP disk. I hope that helps. Let me know if I can help further.

Ok where do I begin?! I have been dealing with viruses, spyware/malware for the past week. It all started with Norton advising me that I had been infected with Trojan. Vundo and Trojan.Zonebac. After that I started receiving many different pop ups warning me about critical system alerts. I also had an annoying yellow triangle at the bottom of my screen warning me about different trojans and worms. More evil friends included 2 new icons that had made their home on my desktop one named "Live Safety Center" and the other "Online Security Guide", also installed was a new toolbar named "Security Toolbar 7.1". I have scanned my computer with many different programs and have somehow finally managed to get rid of the pop ups and toolbar, although I know I'm probably still infected somewhere. I'm sorry this is so long but, I wanted to explain EVERYTHING! I'm running Windows XP SP2, and have followed all steps to post. I downloaded DSS, but after many attempts to run, it just wouldn't let me. I do have a fresh hijackthis log and my Panda report, I hope this is good enough.
Many thanks in advance to whomever helps me, I am desperate!

This began after dumbly going to some non-commercial website. NAV auto-protect did initially detect an infection, but indicated it could not quarantine or delete.

Now when launching IE6, it attempts to redirect to a fake virus software website. When I choose the "not recommended" link, IE crashes shortly afterward. Also, I get a fake "Security Center Alert" popup every few minutes. I stupidly clicked on the link to update the security center.

With System Restore deactivated, I have run (all updated, full scans in safe mode) NAV, Ad-aware, Spybot, SpySweeper, Avira and CCleaner. (Then I found this website and learned I should have waited to do this.) Spybot found a couple of registry entries, but that was the only detection made by any of the programs, other than NAV's initial auto-protect message. File gmer.txt is attached.

Answer:IE crash after "Insecure Internet activity", "Security Center Alert" popup

Before any work can be done on this machine, there is something that requires your immediate intervention.

This machine is messed up pretty badly because you have several anti-virus programs on your machine. That's not a good idea!!

Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & produces undesirable results. Please uninstall ALL leaving only one of them.

ALL the antivirus programs must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstallPost a fresh logs when you have completed the above task.

When I open an old (2003) Exel-file with VBA-code in it with Excel 2007, I get one of these two responses
and I do not know what causes Excel to make different choices
A Dialog Box: "Microsoft Excel Security Notce"
This one is very similar to the one in Excel 2003 and that is how I want Excel to behave.
The user has to “Enable Macros” to go on and work with the file.

"Security Warning"
This one is new in 2007 and the user can continue to work with the file even if he does not see the security warning.
That means that VBA-code that I (the programmer) want to run when the file is opened, does not execute.

My problem is that I do not know what causes the two different behaviors and cannot force Excel to open files with the first Dialog box.
Can you?

Answer:Solved: Excel "Security Notice" vs "Security Warning"

I think most of the info will be in the dailog screen, i'sn't there's more text in the dialog box than the text you mentioned?

I think if you read through it it'll become clear.

It has all to do with the improved Security settings with 2007 and up

I got rid of it but after that I constantly get "Page Load Error" in Firefox, not only in Firefox IE and Chrome too the curious thing for instance in Firefox I have to reload the page like 4, 5, 6 times to load the page so after try too many times page finally loads and I can surf :confused

I have Norton Antivirus and I have run Malwarebytes but nothing was found...

any other idea what could be causing this issue?
this is happening in 2 machines in fact both got infected by the same usb with that virus

thanks a lot

Answer:Weird "Page Load Error" after autorun.inf virus

Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to clean the USB drive and all PCs where it was used.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.

Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Went into the W7 control panel to make a 'system repair disk' (boot disk), just in case I ever needed it. Making the disk went OK, with W7 telling me it had successfully finished, and to label the CD.

I then put the boot CD into my DVD drive to make sure it worked OK. Computer boots from the CD and W7 says it has started loading files. Then the pretty blue background screen started (just like the one in the F8 repair console), and then there was a long pause and then I get the error code shown on the photo below. Clicking OK reboots the computer, and no repair options ever load.

I made two separate boot disks to rule out a bad CD, but still get the same error #

This is a brand new Dell computer, both DVD drives work fine, and burn CDs without problems.

Answer:"Sytem Repair Disk" Can't Load - Error 4001100200001012

In looking at what came with my computer, I do in fact have a "Reinstallation DVD" for W7. It boots OK into the repair console. So, the problem in making my own boot disk is a moot point for now - other then the desire to understand that error code.

I need some technical help and am not sure where to pose this, as it's a problem that the program's developer has never seen before and his suggestions didn't solve.
Album Player is a very good sounding small audio player that's been around for a few years: Audio player Album Player 2.105. It simply unzips to wherever the user wants; i.e. it doesn't use the installer. After running it successfully for months, for the past three days it's been returning an error box on starting the program with the message, "Could not load the decoder." But the thing is the decoder file, ap2decoder.exe, shows as a running process in Windows Task Mgr (Win 8.1 x64 Pro). The developer says the decoder program hasn't changed in five versions (since 2.101, now 2.105).
Here's what I've tried without success:
- deleted and reinstalled the x64 and x32 versions a few times (with reboots)
- excluded the player from Comodo anti-virus and firewall (there were no warnings)
- changed folders where it's located
- run as administrator
- run Yamicsoft Windows 8 Mgr repair module
The only other new thing I can think of during these past couple of days is that there have been two computer startups among many where the system SSD wasn't recognized by the BIOS. The first time I checked BIOS settings and all looked normal, and then coming out of it the computer started right up. The second time I ignored it and it just rebooted normally. I also unplugged/replugged the SSD on both ends just to be su... Read more

I'm a newbie here - after finding techsupportguy by googling for support forums for my particular problem. I hope someone in this community might have some ideas for me...

So after having a stable and successful dual-boot with XP and Vista Ultimate 32Bit for several months now, I got over-confident.

After a long night getting the kids to sleep, etc etc, I had the bright wee hours of the morning idea that I could quickly increase my Vista partition size as it was getting a little light (it shares an internal HDD with another drive letter) and promptly stuffed my Vista boot.

Setup = C:\ XP Boot (original OPSYS). V:\ Vista Partition (shared on same drive as D:\)

What I did...

* Booted into XP, loaded Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.
* Resized D:\ (shrunk by 25GB) and Resized v:\ (increased by 25GB).
* Applied actions.
* Had a PC lock-up in XP some time later, reset PC.
* Boot error - no Windows Vista found (load original disc).
* Loaded Vista disc and used "r" option. Located vista partition, repaired.
* Vista Booted (had rundll.exe error or something similar) and died.
* Re-booted, hit F8 and selected "last known good config." Vista ran lengthy disc check. (Noticed Vista volume was now H:\ not V:\ ???)
* Re-Booted- Vista loaded to login. Keyed password, and "preparing desktop" appeared.
* My desktop and startup programs fail to boot and I get stuck in a plain blue empty screen with cursor only. CTR-ALT-DEL accesses Task Manager or lo... Read more

I receive this error regardless of the browser I'm using but I am connected to the internet; I can connect to steam and update games for example. The issue is tied solely to the inability to load websites. Mine is the only computer on the network that is displaying the issue.

Hello, I've recently been trying to download and install Windows Live Mail. That part was easy, however, upon opening the program, I receive error messages. The first one says, "Sorry, something unexpected happened and Windows Live Mail must close, your most recent changes may not be saved." Then another error box is displayed stating, "Contacts failed to load. Windows Live Mail is incorrectly configured, please re-install." I've uninstalled and reinstalled this program several times, but still not sure why I am receiving these errors. I did edit the registry, deleting the keys for all Windows Live folders insuring a complete uninstall, then reinstalled a fresh download of Windows Live Mail but STILL got the same error messages. I also tried to clear the Live Contacts Store/Cache by renaming the Live contacts folder so a new one would be replaced. Still nothing...This is getting frustrating...Anyone have any other suggestions?  Thanks!

If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked Sections
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

I need help with this Diskette issue please. "Diskette Drive 0 Seek Failure"
I've had this problem a few times in a couple of years and I have been able to fix the error by pressing F2 and going to the SETUP. And I've done this with no issues. But this time I thought I fixed it but now I get this new error: "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". After I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it takes me back to the same error massage "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Need help please. This is a Dell Desktop, Windows XP.
Thank you.

Do you have a recovery restore install disc or partition?
You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Value Name: SFCShowProgress
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

One of our Lotus 1-2-3 v9.5 users running Windows 98 is getting a "File is Corrupt" error when trying to save to our network server running Windows 2000 Server. However, after the user gets that message and clicks "Ok" to get out of that dialog box, she can use the "Save As..." file option and save the file to her local hard drive. From there, she can move it back to the server. Things work, but in a very tedious process. At times, the user will not get the error, and it will save directly to the network server. The rest of the user's department doesn't seem to be having similar problems.
We did think that it could be a network problem, however, the user never has problems getting disconnected from our Novell Groupwise email server, or when accessing Excel, Word, Access, other files etc. It seems like Lotus is the only program that the machine is having trouble with.
Could it be that either something causes 123 to close it's network connection, 123 running on Win98 does not for some reason like the connection to the Win2k server? Can anyone suggest some sort of network/NIC analyzer software (prefer GNUish/Freeish, as this is only 1 client, so large expensive software packages are out of the question) that we could possibly use to see what's going on with the connection from the user's Win98 machine, to the Win2k server while accessing a Lotus 1-2-3 file? As I said before, strange thing is everything else seems to work... Read more

Answer:Lotus 123 v9.5 giving "File Internet Security Corrupt" when trying to save

1. Copy the NSF file into a new local location that has Lotus Notes
2. Using the Command prompt go to Lotus Notes home. (i.e. c:\lotus\notes )
3. Run the following commands:
(Enter the user's Notes password if prompted)
3a. nfixup.exe <filename>.nsf
3b. ncompact.exe -c <filename>.nsf
4. Once the file has been fixed and compacted. Rename the original NSF in source (i.e. _backup or _corrupt) to distinguish the corrupt version from the fixed one.
5. Add the fixed NSF to source and process in Clearwell as needed.

6. Also there is one more methods to get back .nsf file via Lotus Notes Repair Toolbox

For the second time I have gotten the fake anti-virus that names itself "Vista Security Center", last time was months ago, and I followed online, manual removal instructions.

Since then I have bought McAfee and when it came up this time, I just had McAfee scan and remove it.

However the I have NO working file/program associations, every time I click on the mozilla firefox shortcut I have to tell my computer to associate it with firefox.exe (the same thing happens even if I click directly on firefox.exe).

This literally is for everything, except computer navigation icons, like "My Computer" or "Control Panel"

I ran the DDS and will attach the two file, but even with the gmer.exe I had to tell my computer to associate it with gmer.exe, the exact icon I clicked on

Mostly this is just a pain in the ***, but some stuff just simply wont run, help would be GREATLY appreciated.

The infected laptop will not connect to internet so i'm struggling here to get you the data.

I have AV Security Suite in the taskbar, Also have "Windows Security" Warnings (fakes) and when I open anything I get the "File is infected " etc.

Task mngr will not open unless I start it right at boot time. Otherwise it will open for a millisecond and close right back down..

Super antiSpyware finds the AV SECURITY SUITE and says it is removing it, As soon as I reboot It's back.

Symantac AV Finds nothing on a full scan. (Suprising!)

I have ran CC cleaner, HJthis, SuperAntiSpyware, and Symantec AV..

I have a log from superantiSpyware and HJ this. I'm trying to post.
I can't download anything to the infected PC because even though I have a valid connection, and I CAN ping wbsites. When I open I.E It just says it cannot display website.

XP Professional and I.E. 8 On infected pc..

Please bear with me here, Some of the Instruction list I see posted here look like chinese Math problems to me...

Im on a domain

Im right clicking a folder and checking out its security settings becuase i want to see who has access to this particular object.

Ive noticed a few times over the years that sometimes here a sid show up like this:

(meaning little clear head with question mark icon (overlapping head) followed by long sid)

anyways...normally its just users and groups. and not just some sort of id.

Does anyone know why this shows up sometimes?

These users have full control
- and this strange sid that appeared out of nowhere lol.

Answer:Solved: Wondering why "(user)?-SID" displays in file properites > security tab

Could it be that the folder was created by a user account that was later deleted? That would leave SIDs with no corresponding user profile or Security information in the registry or on the domain. That could explain why the user name is unknown. The SID you show appears to be a local account so you should see the SID as a keyname in the registry under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

If the key doesn't exist or the user name listed under the key with that name no longer has an account on the machine it could explain what you are seeing.

I wrote a vb script, and I am trying to run it with a batch file.

Everytime the batch file access it, the user must press "Open" to access the script.

This is opposite of what I want, I want it to silently install in the background without any user intervention necessary.

I have the script on a network drive which everyone can access.

I am putting the batch file into everyone's startup folder.

I just need help with the arguments needed to make it automatically accept the risk and open it anyways.

Here is a generic sample of my batch file:

"@echo off
\\server\share\adlogon_user.vbs /quiet /passive /norestart
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One of our Vista PCs was infected with Security Tool. After following your steps for cleaning Vista, the popups stopped, and MalwareBytes reports the system is clean; yet on re-boot, I run MalwareBytes again, and it reports an infected Rootkit file in c:\Windows\System\Drivers. I follow the steps to clean it; I am told to re-boot. When I re-boot and run the scan again, I get a report that the same file is still present and infected.

Can I just ignore this file, or will the infection come back?
