Question: My HP 250 G5 Windows 10 is just two months old, has suddenly...

Just recently, my super fast notebook struggles to do anything. It fails to load any pages in a browser before it shows 'not responding' and / or crashes the browser completely. I've uninstalled the Chrome browser and tried again and the same thing happens. The same behaviour in the Edge browser where I also cleared all the data. I recently installed Adobe Photoshop and wondered if that could be the problem so I went to the control panel to uninstall it.... but the control panel freezes and so far I've been unable to uninstall it. I'm now having to use a work laptop for personal use as the notebook which was purchased in January is simply useless, slow and freezes a lot when trying to do tasks that it recently used to zip through with ease. Can anyone help? Has there been a problem with a Windows 10 automatic update recently? thank you

Preferred Solution: My HP 250 G5 Windows 10 is just two months old, has suddenly...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been using Windows 10 for an extended time, and have not dealt with any issue with BSODs so far. However, they started in the past week, and have been frequent. It appears to be a Bad_Stack_0x109 error, but I have no idea how to fix that. I have attached the zip file.

I can collect any more information if it is needed to help me fix my issue!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Regular BSOD suddenly after using Windows 10 for multiple months

Only one of the dumps indicates a possible cause, all the rest show ANALYSIS_INCONCLUSIVE.

I see a BIOS update for FUJITSU LIFEBOOK E544 on the Fujitsu web site. Try updating the BIOS.

No Windows 10 specific drivers though.

I do see a lot of Windows 8.1 drivers. Try installing the Intel wireless driver from the web site since the one dump indicated a problem with Netwbw02.sys which is part of the Intel wireless driver. If no help install the Chipset driver.

If still no help, give Driver Verifier a try.

It was kind of a curve ball, and a little unsettling, because I thought I had solved the problem. I think I've narrowed it down to my graphics card, since a lot of the recent BSODs point to it, but I'm not sure if it's because the drivers are bad, or if the card itself is bad (it's an Nvidia, and I thought that those cards are able to withstand gaming for several years, so I'm a little disheartened if it's a bad card).

Specs:
OS: Windows 7
x64
The original installed OS was Windows 7, I think (this is a used laptop)
My OS is a full retail version
Hardware around 4 years old
The OS was re-installed 6-8 months ago.

CPU: Intel Core i7 Q720 @ 1.6 GHz
Video card: Nvidia GeForce GTS 360M
Motherboard: I'm not sure, but I assume it's the original Asus version?
Power supply: Asus N193 85V
System Manufacturer: Asus
Model Number: G60JX
I'm hoping that this is maybe a driver problem, and not something serious like a defective card or maybe faulty RAM.

Thank you for reading this!

Answer:After a few months of no BSODs, it suddenly came back

Hello NocturnalSleep,

Various differemt bugchecks but they're all pointing to your GPU drivers of DirectX one way or another. I'd recommend uninstalling and reinstalling your nVidia video drivers and reinstalling the latest version. If you're already on the latest version, I'd recommend uninstalling and installing a previous version to the latest to be sure it's not a simple driver issue.

Driver(s) in need of update:

My laptop suddenly stopped charging when plugged in, and only charges when it is switched off. Also the space bar stopped functioning. I bought it 9 months back and it's still under the warranty period., but they said they will be able to fix the space bar problem only and not the charging problem and for that I would have to pay up. And the charging port that they would change would be under warranty only for 2 months, which means as per HP service center it could stop working again!!!!. I'm a doctor and I live alone. I've hardly used my laptop and no one else uses my laptop. I read somewhere that this was a problem faced by many people using HP laptops. This could be a manufacturing defect. I don't think I should be charged for hardly using my HP laptop that has an inherent defect. You are looting your customers. Kindly revert back.

Hello all, I hope you experts can help me out with these BSOD's I'm getting lately.

Heres my problem,

When ever I watch a movie and press pause after an hour or so I get a BSOD, and this also happens when I listen to music files for a while or just watching some flash videos on the internet.

I didn't have this before so its only been recently, I've been running windows 7 64bit for months now, always stable. I wouldn't suspect my hardware to be the problem as I've all ready looked in some minidumps with Win Debugger but I'm clueless on how to read them and find the cause. I've also seen some differences in the BSOD's its not always the same cause. Yet its always when I do the same thing when it happens or so it seems..

Here's my hardware,
GA-P55-UD4 - Intel Core I5 @ 3.9ghz 1.312v - GeIL DDR3 2x2gigs cas 7 1600mhz @ 1488mhz T1 2:8 7-7-7-24-54 1.65v - 260GTX 55nm 216 896mb @700mhz/1404/1200 SLI - Asus Xonar DX - CM Real Power M700

Trust me its stable, I've ran countless of tests before, and the minidumps always blame "vista's" drivers. (quite funny how windows 7 is actually vista under the hood, a bit modified of course)

Anyways I've included the files that are required in order to let you experts figure it out. I hope that its enough, I could also include some dumpfiles if those are required.

Thanks in advance.

I update and save quite a few files each day, and I can see in File History that there are many saved versions for these files.
This would fill up my backup drive fairly quickly, and therefore, I need to reduce 'Keep saved versions' from the default of 'forever' to about 3 months.  But does this mean that all files older than 3 months will be deleted my File History backup?
What happens to all my files that have only ever been saved once, but are older than 3 months?  Are these retained in File History or deleted?
The forums on File History do no make this very clear.

I bought a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad T460S in Nov 2016. This is supposed to be their premium business laptop range. I uses it daily, simple computer work. Lately it starts to have problem hibernating and waking from sleep/hibernation. Yesterday the steel left hinge suddenly broke. I contacted the Lenovo Support today and they replied : The three year international Warranty does not cover the hinges. It's like you buy a new car, then the hinge of your drive breaks and it's not covered by warranty? What kind of logic is that? They want to charge me for the repair. I am getting a quote from them, this is probably the last Thinkpad I will ever buy from Lenovo! I am getting a quote from them. I wonder if we can get the part myself and attempt a self repair. But this is deeply disappointing!

I have 2 PCs, one an HP laptop, the other an ASUS desktop, that are both pretty well configured almost identically, same programs installed, same settings and tweaks.

I?m running the latest version of 8GadgetPack on both and had no problems at all for months. (I only use the MS clock, calendar, and weather gadgets.) Then a couple weeks ago they started freezing on my laptop. I noticed the clock was almost 45 minutes behind one day. I tried to double-click it and then right-click on it and then tried the other 2 gadgets. All 3 were frozen. I closed all 3 down with the task manager and re-opened them. They ran fine for about 5 minutes then froze again. (The clock stopping is the give-away.)

I did a system clean with CCleaner and then rebooted. The gadgets loaded and worked for about 5 mins again and then froze up again. After a few days of trying to solve this I decided ?screw it? and went to uninstall it. I saw a ?Repair/Reset? option on the uninstall screen and decided to try that first. It worked, and the gadgets started running normally again and continued to do so for a few weeks. I thought the problem was fixed. Today, out of nowhere, the freezing started again (I noticed the clock had stopped)! I tried the reset again, which didn?t work this time. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Still freezing. Now I?m at a loss.

Answer:8GadgetPack freezing suddenly after months of trouble-free performance

After viewing the FAQs on the 8GP website, it mentioned some issues can be fixed by going into the "Tools" menu and selecting a different display size for the gadgets. There's only 2 sizes available, small and regular. I tried "small" and that seems to have somehow fixed the freezing issue (for now). It's been several hours and none of the gadgets have frozen.

They're quite a bit smaller now, but they are legible. I'd prefer to have them the regular size, but this is okay I guess. I'd like to be able to figure out why the display size affects the performance.

This began yesterday. When outlook is opened it begins a send/receive as per usual. Only it is receiving 700+ emails that date back to June. And it just keeps on receiving them over and over. I have received and deleted them numerous times. Actually, I've noticed that it doesn't always complete receiving all 700+.

I've checked the email account settings and all is well. I've spoken to the ISP (bellsouth) and verified with them that the settings are correct and that the webview version of my mailbox (ie, the server) is not holding/receiving these messages. So now what?

three days ago, everything was fine. i have a windows vista pc, 32 bit, gateway dx441x. it has a wireless adapter. the other pc in my house is a windows xp gateway that's plugged into my linksys router. the modem also plugs into the router. ive had it set up this was since june and havent had any problems.

three days ago, i turned off my vista pc and it said "installing updates", which it does from time to time. this has never created a problem before. well the next day i could not get onto my network. every time i tried to connect, it said "windows cannot find any networks". i clicked diagnose the problem, it returned with another variation on windows cannot find any networks in your area. both my pcs are desktops, they have not moved an inch. the computer hooked to the router is still working and able to use the internet. i unplugged the adapter, plugged it back in, rebooted, nothing worked. at that point i decided maybe my adapter was broken so i bought a new one. i installed the software for it first, then plugged in the adapter. same problem - can't find any networks! i called linksys, their advice was to uninstall the driver and reinstall it. i went back to the old adapter, since i had ruled that out as the problem. uninstalled the driver under device manager. it went away. put the driver cd back in, went to install, it said this is already installed do you want to continue. i clicked yes, followed the prompts. Hello all,

First off, I am a nerd, my wife is a nerd, we have six computers in the house, running windows / linux, and who knows what, 2 tablets, 2 cell phones, ps3, wii, and a sony web tv.

Everything can connect to my router with no problem.

My 2 month old Sony Vaio, which I use primarily for mobile web development and graphic arts, was really a wonderful machine.

on 01/08/12, I purchased a wacom bamboo tablet, installed everything, and was having a great time sketching things on the computer tablet configuration, when after bout three hours of playing, suddently, I was dropped from wireless connectivity with no reason.

I checked with my wife, who was watching a netflix movie and happily computing on the other side of the couch, and she was connected. So I restarted my computer, everything came up fine, connected to the internet, and after about 60-90 seconds of normal internet happiness, I lost my connection again.

For the last 24 hours ish, this computer has been rebooted, restarted, the router has been restarted and unplugged, I have reset everything, uninstalled the tablet (It doesnt make sense to me how a usb drawing/mouse device may have any effect on my wireless, but hey... at the end of the rope)

And nothing works. Every other device connects just fine.

So, here I am, fellow nerds.

Anyone have any idea why in the heck my computer would run the internet over a wifi connection for only an apx 60 second run?

I need to conquer this,... Read more

I purchased said unit Sept. last year and within a few months the battery started discharging for no reason I could see. Battery returned to Lenovo, tested and a new battery sent out (old one apparently kaput). I thought the problem was solved until a few days ago when... Battery starts discharging again for no reason I can see. Laptop eventually went into hibernation. Unplugged charger, plugged back in, switched on then powered up the laptop and the battery started charging. This sequence of events was repeated 3 times in 1 week, until yesterday when powering up the laptop failed. Took the battery out and tried laptop on charger only. Nothing. Put battery back in and tried to power up - then noticed battery indicator gave 3 orange flashes 1 second apart before stopping. Did the battery discharge thing (pressing in the power button etc.). Still nothing. The unit seems to have failed completely. Can someone tell my what I might be dealing with here - a failed motherboard? Yet again I'm going to have to send this laptop back for repair, and it's been nothing short of a nightmare because I rely on it to do work. I've never experienced something like this before with a purchased laptop and I suspect the original battery problem was caused by a fault inside the laptop. As the machine is still within warranty can I request a new machine or a full refund because I simply don't want to use something which may be inherently unstable? Looking at the views ... I usually like to leave my computer on overnight. So I go offline, disable my wireless, and put on a video playlist in full screen to help me sleep. Anyway, today I woke up and saw the Windows Media Player no longer full screen, and the wireless switch was actually turned on. This is strange because I know I turned wireless off and I frequently check my system with Malwarebytes.

What could this be? Did someone snoop in my computer? Thanks in advance for the support.

The battery in my first gen S10 died after about 7 months. Fortunately, I was still well within my warranty so Lenovo held up their end and replaced it. However, after about 8 months that second battery too no longer holds a charge and my original warranty has since expired. Phone support reiterated as much and denied any help.  This leads me to ask, shouldn't the second battery carry with it a full one year warranty? How can Lenovo not stand by a battery that dies in less than a year? This seems like more than just bad luck and has me questioning whether I will purchase another Lenovo product in the future.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can I continue to use it as a preview or will my computer evaporate into a cloud of smoke if I do that?

Microsoft has let the cat out of the bag a week early and stated "there is not another WinHEC planned before Windows 7 is released."
As the WinHEC conference is an annual affair, providing the conference isn't cancelled next year then this would put Windows 7 on target for a RTM before November next year.
The revelation follows comments from ASUS CEO Jerry Shen discussing the future of the ASUS Eee PC in an interview with Laptop Mag. "I think in the future in the second half of next year we will put Windows 7 on Eee PCs" said Shen.
If all of this is true and Microsoft is on target with Windows 7 then recent rumours of a Beta 1 in December would not be far off.

Answer:lap top only charges 80%,its only 8 months old,windows 8

mmm... often seen this to be resolved by allowing the battery to discharge "fully" - totally flat etc... Then recharge...I have seen suggestions/recommendations to allow a battery to fully discharge now and then - so as to prevent any memory effects (which lithium batteries are not "supposed" to suffer). Is said to prolong the life...Some suggest remove the battery if running on mains power; as that too will lengthen battery life as battery will hold charge for a while and then it naturally decay...I have an elderly/olde Acer Aspire (2005 at least) with the original battery still OK... It has been removed for periods of time - when it appeared to have charging problems; it wouldn't charge up properly. But after a total clean install/rebuild of the operating system (XP-Pro) the battery charges fine to a full 100%, and retains it too...message edited by trvlr

Perhaps Win7 should be based on WinXP instead of adding more bloat to Vista? I think Microsoft should get a clue. They should give customers what they want and not what Microsoft wants them to have.

Answer:It just won’t die: Windows XP gets another six months

Hehe that's awesome. I'm so glad I was able to make XP work again properly. Vista was too annoying, slow, and incompatible with older software.

Can someone please please please tell me how to get windows 10 off my laptop. I have done two clean installs and i tried a hard drive wipe keeping my files NOTHING works. Seriously i do not want this operating system on my laptop it has totally screwed up the laptop its constantly crashing every time it wakes up from sleep and is super glitchy just working within the OS. So can someone please help i do not care what i have to do i have backed up all my stuff. I just want it off. Thanks

Answer:Uninstall windows 10 after having it for 6 months

I have done two clean installs does that mean you have the DVD for your previous op sys? (Windows 7 or 8.1?)
You could buy a new harddrive and install your previous op sys on that.
It could just be that you haven't got the Windows 10 drivers for the hardware, or when you did a clean install of previous op sys you didn't download the drivers for that either.
A few more details would help, what was your previous op sys and what dvds do you have? and what is the make and model of your laptop and did you get the drivers needed?

Is anyone else excited for some of the upcoming changes?

Are you already running the preview version or waiting until the final version so you don't have to reinstall once it ships? I personally am waiting until it ships as I already deal with entirely too many OS's day in and day out. Win 2k3, 2k8, 2012, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8...no more Vista machines. Hopefully no more XP machines soon as well.

Which features are you most excited about? As someone who does a lot of web development the rewritten developer tools in Internet Explorer look promising (I have a preview version on a Windows 7 VM)

Answer:Less than 2 months til Windows 8.1 release day

Been playing with the 9471 release since it came out and there is a lot that's changed in 8.1. As much as people say Microsoft hasn't listened with 8 they really did with 8.1. Short of Metro off, and I do understand that's all a lot of folks care about, just about every other major issue that I know of in 8 was addressed in some fashion in 8.1. Booting to the desktop, some configurability in the hot corners, better Modern app multitasking and support for multiple monitors, better in the box training, better UI cues and guidelines for them, overall much improved in the box Modern apps particularly the Mail and Music clients (though the Photos app lost Facebook and Flikr integration which seems stupid) and the Start Screen is significantly improved with much better manageability and better keyboard and mouse operation though context menuing still needs to be improved.

It's a pretty big step in the right direction but it's not enough to appease the hardcore desktop folks but I do think it will be better accepted by consumers, particularly if next gen Windows 8 tablets are what I'm hoping for. Bay Trail tablets should be a big boost forward in performance and capability, and hopefully the pricing will be there, that's really got to improve.

Hello! I built a custom computer & installed OEM Windows 7 Pro-OA.

The program activated with no problems and has been updating all along, with no problems until yesterday, which interestingly is exactly 3 months to the hour that I installed it. I received absolutely zero notices of problems until the "Windows not Genuine" issued happened.

Hopefully someone can help me. Here is the report:

Answer:Windows not genuine after exactly 3 months of use

I may not be too much help with correcting the issue but the first thing I saw was the 8th line down in the code box is

Quote:
Windows License Type: Retail

That looks like a problem to me, unsure of what you might need to do. Somebody will be along that knows much more than me to help out. Just thought I'd point out what jumped out immediately.

Strange that it would be three months to the day before anything came up, especially with an OEM installation and an the indication of a retail license. I've always thought it was either one or the other.

I had Windows 8 Professional edition from ASDF India (Association of Software Developers & Faculties). They had provided a KMS Activated version, which after installation, activated Windows 8 automatically. Also to mention that it is a genuine copy, as I had a special password which was provided by them to log in and download windows 8. However, I was not provided any extra Keys.

After running smoothly for 8 months, today out-of-the-blue a message pops up saying Windows 8 is not activated. The error shows as follows :

Error : 0x8007232B
Description : DNS Name does not exist.

I tried to follow the steps mentioned in this Microsoft Help article Error 0x8007232b or 0x8007007B occurs when you try to activate Windows, but could not solve the error.

Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Answer:Windows 8 Activation fails after 8 months

KMS is not legal activator, that serial number was probably black listed.

About two months ago, it may have been less, i had my computer sent down by geek squad to get fixed for some part problems, camera, charger port, exc. they had to reinstall windows for my camera to work (... i don't think it does still anyways...) Now i get an error saying it's not genuine. i don't have the key because i have no clue who downloaded it, if it was in store while i dropped it off, or sent out to 1 of 100 possible people who could have fixed it.... i saw a thread earlier about someone who had the same problem, but different scenario i think, this information might help, not sure...

Answer:Windows claims to not be genuine after two months or so

Windows is unable to find the SLIC table in the BIOS required to self-activate the OEM_SLP Key in use

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.

As the topic says, my windows updates have been failing for the last eight months and I'm about to give up and do a fresh reinstall.  I'm hoping someone will have a suggestion for me, since I'd rather NOT have to go through the hassel of reinstalling everything. I'm fairly technical, but I'm at a complete loss. This all started back on July 2012 super Tuesday where all the updates downloaded and failed to install.  With each successive month of released updates, the list of failed gets longer and longer, the only exception being that the MSSE updates seem to go through with no problem.I've googled the heck out of the error code, but none of the fixes I found worked. I've tried the built-in updates troubleshooter, but it lies to me, tells me it fixed the issues, but the updates fail all the same. I've tried manually downloading the updates from their KB articles, but individually they fail to install.I'd love to hear if anyone has experienced this or has any ideas. Thanks!

After the down load is complete it does not require a restart even though I restarted on my own but each day I start windows after previous day shutdown it still wants to download what looks like the same update. Is there aproblem with my Windows XP?

My HP PC is 20 months old and they have decided not to provide the drivers for the graphic card (which I find is over 5 years old) for Windows 10. I've been in touch with their customer service, after being passed around for hours on end, and been told "Your PC is 20 months old, we are selling new graphics cards that will work with Windows 10, we are not providing drivers for your existing graphics card because, that way we sell more.

What an attitude !

OK, I have exactly 2 days of working with Windows 10, but, after all these years of Windows and studying the OS, I feel I have earned the right to believe that I can see where MS has gone with 10 after this short time. BTW, I have never even booted a W8 PC, and all of my PCs are basically W7 Pro 64, other than a couple of XP Pro machines. I don't feel like I am biased, considering the upgrade is free, but here is what I would like to say:

All respect to all other opinions, but I have an opinion that is framed a little bit unusually. This is that I believe MS absolutely has accomplished one thing with W10. It is fully granny-proofed. I don't think granny will have a single complaint. IMO, this is a nice thing in a very important sense.

This looks 100% to me like a call to get out there and get mother and granny hooked up. It's Windows the granny edition, and I do like that aspect of the upgrade option.

This said, I would also like to say that I don't see the difference between this and Windows 7 under the wrapper, and I confess I don't know why MS would force anyone to upgrade who has W7. I really feel MS should add 5+ years to support for W7 for the sake of business machine owners who work on their PCs. Give IT time to learn everything there is to learn about W7 in corporate environments and give the OS a chance to pass the test of time. I think W7 can win and even with MS charging for it on new PCs. Make the W10 thing an option.

Answer:Comments Windows 10 After 6 Months (or 2 Days)

You need to look at the Enterprise version for business use rather than the Pro version. Never been quite sure myself just who the Pro version is intended for. With data you could turn off Bing and Cortana because that's how most of the stuff concerning YOU gets out, but that just leaves you in Google's tender hands. Fact of life - use the internet and your data will be gathered by someone.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

i have been using windows 8 pro x64 with media center since around the time it was released and i took advantage of the upgrade offer, and up until about a week ago everything was running smoothly as expected. now in the past few days it says it needs activating and when i try to activate i get an error message, the control+alt+delete results in a delay of about 15-20 mins followed by an error message saying task manager wont open. i have not changed or added any hardware or my system configuration at all, apart from software.

i ran SFC scannow and it found and fixed some corrupt files but the symptoms still remain the same as described after a restart.
can anybody suggest possible fixes, or do i need to reinstall........................

I've got it to crash pretty consistently while running superantispyware and it only crashes then if the "Use kernel direct file access" and "Use kernel direct registry access" boxes are checked under >Preferences >Scanning Control. I couldn't figure out how to read the minidumps, they are .dmp and i'm pretty new to all this kind of stuff. But bsod says

While you still can back up as much data as you can onto CD or DVD.
A page is a fixed length block of memory
transferred between physical RAM and storage.

The page fault refers to a particular block its address in Hex form.

Download a copy of memtest and burn the ISO to CDROM. You need to boot from the CD and give your memory a thorough test.

http://www.memtest.org/

I'd also make sure that you are not overclocking your memory or system, as its 6 months old, you may still have warrantry. Sometimes memory errors can be cleared by removing and re-inserting memory modules.

Hello there.
I recently changed my settings for Windows Update, to let it check for updates, but now it always asks for a restart.
I tried almost every solution, i don't know what to do, i need SP1 for SQL Server 2012 to work, but it's not installing. I even downloaded the update from microsoft's website, but the installer fails.
I tried almost every method i found :
- setting it to never update, then setting it back to automatic
- deleting the registry keys from the Update-er
- deleting the files in SoftwareDistribution
- trying FixIt (normal and aggressive mode)
- trying the FixIt method manually
- renaming the edb.log file in the SoftwareDistribution folder via safe-mode.

I can't give you an error number, since it doesn't show one. It just asks for a restart, but nothing happens. I really need this fixed...

I'm on 8.1 and have been avoiding updating ever since the huge Windows 10 controversy over privacy and telemetry and all that ****. But I think now, for the sake of security, I should probably think about installing some of the dozens, if not hundreds of updates, I've been ignoring. I'm gonna list all of them here. Could somebody please tell me which of them are safe to install and which might sneak Windows 10 onto my system?

On second thoughts, I won't LIST them ALL. I'll describe them. Quicker. I've got a security update for Silverlight, a definition update for Windows Defender, a cumulative security update for Internet Explorer 11, a whole bunch of security updates for Adobe Flash Player, Microsoft .NET Framework, and Windows, a whole bunch of non-security updates for Windows, and the latest version of the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Which of all of these updates are OK and which should I hide?

(I wonder if Windows falls under the definition of malicious software.)

Answer:Haven't Updated Windows In Months

All Windows Defender Definitions should be updated as soon as you get them. You can do that by opening Windows Defender and clicking on Update.
As for Windows 10 updates you are trying to avoid look here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/windows-10-trying-to-force-upgrade.295938/
Look at post #12 Earthling gives a list of updates that are connected to Windows 10 that you might not want to update.

Hi ,

Sorry my thread title is quite bad, but my problem can only be described as "weird". For some reason, my laptop has turned crazy recently, the following basically:
I can't access the features from start menu (so can't launch apps, and can't turn off laptop normally.Half of the icons on my toolbar are missing.Using search function only searches the web (i.e. can't search for documents and stuff like control panel :/).Can't open some apps (e.g. any Microsoft Office apps, like PowerPoint- which is really inconvenient).

The list goes on and on, I have been using Windows 10 for around 2 months now, so I really have no clue as to why this problem occurred or how to fix it.

Thanks.

Microsoft's latest operating system Windows 7 has gone on sale in the UK almost three months ahead of schedule at massively reduces prices, it has emerged.
The software officially goes on sale to the general public on October 22, but Microsoft has released it early with prices starting from ?49.99 for Windows Premium.
Early buyers will be able to snap up Windows 7 for a limited pre-sale period and will save up to ?100 for the Premium package alone.

Microsoft announced early sales of its Windows 7 operating system, just days after Google announced it was releasing a rival product

Those who purchase Windows 7 Professional will pay ?99.99 instead of ?189.99.

A spokesperson for the company has said stocks are limited for the sale which runs from today until August 9.
But all UK versions of Windows 7 will not come with Internet Explorer, which means buyers must install a web browser to upgrade their computer's operating system.
Microsoft is currently in an ongoing legal battle with the EU which said that automatically installing Internet Explorer was anti-competitive to other browsers.
All sales of Microsoft 7 will be based on a first come first served basis, according to The Telegraph.

On top of that nothing is being released early, you are only pre-ordering you will not receive windows 7 until Oct 22 same as everyone else.

Answer:Not Genuine Windows Error ~8 months after install.

Try re-entering the Key that you have from the disc or COA sticker (on the side or bottom of the machine, also check the battery compartment if it's a laptop) that the system builder provided.

The supposed solutions mentioned in pg2 of the thread linked below don't work. However the problem is adequately described in that thread.

Windows 7 Explorer Failures - Unsolvable for the last 17 months now. - PPRuNe Forums
Basically Win7 explorer hangs with a perpetual hourglass and every fourth or fifth instance just fails with an advice that "Windows is looking for a solution to the problem".
After an assurance that "Windows Explorer will shortly restart", sometimes it does and most times it doesn't.
A number of pposters on that thread are suffering the same symptoms.
Anybody familiar with causes or solutions?

Answer:Windows 7 Explorer Failures - Unsolvable for the last 17 months now.

Have you checked for any system updates recently? Hanging graphics tend toward video graphics drivers being clobbered by MS updates. Also, check to see if screen saver is set to revert to Welcome screen. That worked for me on some machines.

I have XPpro SP2.

I have no idea what causes this but the whole boot seems to screw up in exact the same manner at roughly the exact same time causing me to go through the whole process again and again.

I do a fresh install. Thing srun fine for few months then I begin to get anomalous reboots on startup. This will happen once or twice then it becomes every single time I boot up. It gets to the splash screen then I hear that little click inside the computer indicating it's reset itself. After the 1st reset it seems fine for the rest of the day.

It will go on like this for a while before completely conking out. At some point it will usually stop booting up at all and give me various error messages saying the system files are corrupt. The only solution I've found so far is to nuke it and do a fresh install on new partition. As I havn't reached 'critical' stage yet I couldn't tell you the precise error messages it gives me once it fails to boot as I'm still in the reboot phase.

It baffles me why it happens in such a routine fashion at the same time and in the same way.

Also I forgot how to do it but how do you reinstall windows again over the top of your current one without losing your settings? I think with my version it won't let me do it cos the repair function doesn't work within windows which is why I always have to do a fresh one.

Answer:Windows xp screws up like clockwork after every 3 months after reinstall

Hi,

To do a fresh install over the top - as a multi boot, you install as normal and you should have the option to "Leave system intact (no changes)"
...Or create a new partition in the setup menu.

Is the version of Windows XP SP2 a legit windows CD or did you use a SP1 disk to create the SP2 disc?

If it happens every few month like clockwork, it doesnt seem to me that it has anything to do with hardware, otherwise it would happen everytime, fresh install or not. Does it do the same thing when no USB devices are connected, could it be a software update for one of your USB devices that comes after a couple months from install? Have you tried installing SP3 straight after installing SP2? Give these a try and let me know if you have already or the results :-)

My local PC shop says you should reinstall windows & format hard drive EVERY 2 MONTHS!! I say this is completely ridiculous as by the time you have put everything back in place - not to mention all the updates for your anti-virus - spyware and adware programmes, it's time to start again!! Surely you should try a repair first etc..

This is a short history of my OS activity. I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8.1 sometime early last year that went very well (never used 8.0). At the end of the year I upgraded to Windows 10 and that also went very well. Two weeks ago I saw a notice at the bottom right of my screen asking me to activate windows by going to the settings, however I have been unable to activate windows. I made several attempts to correct this without success. I used SFC and the Dism tools, none of them helped. Finally I used the MGADiag tool but the copy command fails with this message "failed to create output files, hr= 0x80070002. Please contact support.

Hello Guys,

Just thought I'd let you know that after my unsuccessful Window 8.1 update on the first day of release I have tried it again this week and this time it has gone really smoothly and I'm very impressed with it.

When I originally installed it it made my computer really slow and several previously installed programs had stopped working so I put a image of pre 8.0 install back on to my computer.

The only problem I have which is very small is that I have set a key on my mouse to show the desktop (minimise all windows), on Win 8 it would minimise everything and the 8GadgetPack sidebar would still be displayed, in 8.1 the sidebar is also minimised which is a little annoying. If I use the minimise all windows shortcut on keyboard (win key+M) it will do what I want but I can't set the button on my mouse to do that.

Also the second problem which I hope will be fixed with a gadget update is the Network gadget doesn't work and any new gadgets I add do not work, I think this is something to do with dpi scaling but I can wait for it to be rectified.
So all those of you who had trouble with the 8.1 upgrade, it might be worth another look at it.

Thanks

Tony

Hello,
I just want' a clear answer if there is one.
How to make DisplayPort work on (OEM) Win 7 Pro/x64, HP Probook 6470b.

Here is the situation: I don't want 3 displays... heck I just want one to work via Displayport - it did for 5 months...
Situation:
1. i needed external display (only DVI-D Monitor available) .
2. i got DisplayPort to DVI-D cable: DisplayPort hooked to DVI-D input of SamsungSyncmaster 245B worked great!
(up to 1920x1080: no problem: closed the lid an auto.got 1920x1080 on external monitor):
3. I took laptop and hooked it to TV: DisplayPort->HDMI: no problems...
4. One day it "decided" to stop working... and I don't think the DisplayPort is broken: something else is (according to all troubles people go through I would say I was very lucky to get away with this: e.i. getting the pisture from DisplayPort..) - in fact it's not broken: when tested on Ubuntu it works, so HW is ok.
5. I reinstalled intelHD 4000 drivers to new ones (v.dec2014) - even though the things worked with old one (v.jul2013), going to restore points,...
6. Tried...well almost all there is to be found on internet (where else?) - nothing works, though DisplayPort works with no problem on ubuntu (makes you think...doesn't it?)
7. Tried DisplayPort to VGA^ - vga monitor not even detected, nothing... as with dvi monitors, or hdmi (TV)
(^ which works perfectly (i'm "lucky" i guess) on other laptop (yes, hp proobook just year or two older than the one in question: with ... Read more

Hello.

Ok, here is the problem. In the past 5 months for these reasons I've had to either emergency repair, HD partition whipe, or install over it:

Tried installing some of the networking software that isn't with the standard install.

Once while installing a screensaver.

Once after I tried to reboot after installing an update to OS.

All of these resulted in hanging of startup and cause me to do one of the three things above. Anybody got any possible reasons why this would happen?

One more thing, I need a replacement for Cnet's Catchup service. Anybody know of any?

Thank You.

My laptop has been infected for months with cryptowall. Instead of dealing with the issue I just unplugged it and put it aside. Probably not the wisest of ideas, but I was dealing with a family member with cancer. I just want to wipe it clean.  Any help with that process would be greatly appreciated. Please and thank you.

Answer:Infected with Cryptowall on Windows 8. Haven't turned it on in months

A repository of all current knowledge regarding CryptoWall, CryptoWall 2.0 & CryptoWall 3.0 is provided by Grinler (aka Lawrence Abrams), in this topic: CryptoWall and DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION Ransomware Information Guide and FAQCryptowall typically deletes (though not always) all Shadow Volume Copies with vssadmin.exe so that you cannot restore your files via System Restore or using a program like Shadow Explorer...but it never hurts to try in case the infection did not do what it was supposed to do. Another possible options is to try file recovery software such as R-Studio or Photorec to recover some of your original files but there is no guarantee that will work.At this time there is no fix tool and Decryption of any CryptoWall Files...is impossible since there is no way to retrieve the private key that can be used to decrypt your files without paying the ransom. The only other alternative is to save your data as is and wait for possible updates...meaning, what seems like an impossibility at the moment (decryption of your data) there is always hope someday there may be a breakthrough or possible solution so save the encrypted data and wait until that time. There are also ongoing discussions in these topics:CryptoWall - new variant of CryptoDefense Support & DiscussionCryptoWall 3.0 Support & DiscussionRather than have everyone start individual topics, it would be best (and more manageable for staff) if you posted any questions, comments or requests for assistance in ... If I make an appointment more than six months out (ex., doctor appointment) the reference on the calendar app immediately disappears. But it will get logged in my Google calendar immediately where it will stay, and eventually show up on my phone. But it is annoying that I can't see those appointments on my phone as I am trying to schedule things as far out as September. It wasn't like this before the last major phone 8.1 update. Will this bug get resolved?

I bought a Toshiba Satelite that was having trouble connecting online. It kept saying that the IP was invalid, or the DNS could not be found...Eventually, I checked the system event logs. There were THOUSANDS of entries made in March 2014 and October 2014. I didn't purchase it until Dec 2014?????? Mostly, they were audits to the security and system files. They created a remote access local user account and manipulated everything I could access. Staples has replaced the laptop, (costing me an additional $85.00, on top of the $350.00 already paid initially, for a problem that I didn't cause. And they allowed me to keep the corrupted hard drive. Now, how do I find out WHO did this and how to prevent it from happening to others?

Answer:Windows 8.1 hijacked by a remote user, 9 months PRIOR to sale.....

I should also mention that the pre-installed norton account was manipulated, along with the "Free-Trial" office pack. They both had files that showed corruption and I didn't download either of them!!! They came with something already attached. And when Staples scanned for "Viruses", NOTHING showed up! So, once the remote user was able to implant themselves in my Windows registry files, they became "Trusted" and were able to bypass ALL of the anti-virus or malware software I ran, (And Staples..) because they "piggy-backed" themselves onto legitimate file entries through adding extensions those files. I have never heard of such a thing and I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of this or known of this happening??? I can't be the only one, and until thousands of people are victimized, this doesn't count as a significant problem. I'd like to spare others of this level of violation, if I can....Please help me understand what I can do to prevent this type of problem later. I'm burnt out and defeated by this issue, only because I didn't even know this was a "thing". I expected to open a box and find a brand new, "fresh off the lot" computer. And, instead, I ended up with some "borrowed" product, with ZERO traceability, and a "Maybe" we can get you something close to what you actually wanted......I walked out with a Windows 7 without even realizing until I got it home and turned it on!!!! And they wanted to charge me an ADDITIONAL $137.00!!!!! Why??? So, the manager knocked it down t... Read more

Hi,

After reading a few posts about this issue and trying to fix it, it seems it hasn't resolved.

I have read a lot of NoelDP's comments, so would love one of your 'easy fix' replies rather than the one or two 'reinstall!' replies.

I loaded up my computer yesterday and it showed me barebones non-Aero desktop with none of my icons, etc. The sound was not working. Failed to connect to windows service errors were showing in the taskbar.

I restarted and it seemed to work fine.

After a while my a message in the taskbar told me my windows was not genuine.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have started my computer up again this morning and it's showing from the start that it's not genuine.

I have entered my Key in to SLUI.exe 4, and it seems to have activated for now. The results below are from AFTER this activation and that means the computer is looking quite fine right now. I will restart and post another MGADiag if it comes up as not genuine again.

Anyway, I think this is what you need. The MGADiag.exe results:

Hello,
Here is the problem I was having before for reference:

http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...v4-laptop.html

I don't know if this problem and the previous are related, so started a new thread. After re-installing the OS everything worked fine until a few weeks ago. So flawless for about 2 months. Very intermittent BSOD has become more frequent, just as before. Attached is my zip file for examination. Let me know if any further information is required. Thanks for your help!

Answer:BSOD starts 2 months after clean re-install of Windows 7 on HP Laptop

Hello there!

Since the reinstall of Windows if it still BSOD'ed then it could be Hardware. Run Hardware Diagnostic (RAM and hard Drive) Hardware Diagnostic | Captain Debugger

Check for BIOS update. It's pretty out-dated.

I have ran chkdsk /r, used an admin disk to copy ntoskrnl.exe back to the Windows directory and reimaged the machine several times. This error still pops up after a few weeks of the machine being reimaged. At this point, I do not know what to do. I Googled on line for answers and some stated it may be hardware related. RAM, Hard Drive, Motherboard? Unfortunately, our T60s didn't come with a restore disk and I am not able to access the system partition with the original shipped image on it. Any suggestions for troubleshooting? It is not happening to any other T60 users with the same exact model and configuration. We are running Windows XP Pro SP2 with all the latest updates.

Answer:T60 getting Missing C:\Windows\ntoskrnl.exe error (happened multiple times within the last 6 months)

Hello, Was the file actually missing, or was it still present on the system but damaged in some way. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

I have been fighting this virus/rootkit/bootkit whatever it is for getting close to 6 months now. It started as some virus on my little brothers computer at his house which infected his router and about 5 other computers in the house. I connected to the router and it proceeded to infect my laptop, the router at my home and all the computers there as well. It also has infected 4 android phones a Palm Treo Pro with windows mobile and a palm Pre. Along with infecting anyone who connected to any of the routers. I am currently writing this from my mothers laptop which has the worst infection. She purchased a new one to replace the old one which seemed to be impossible to to fix at a cost of around $2,000. 1 Day later her new laptop was infected although it wasn't apparent to to her. I am currently go to school for my Bachelors in Computer science, my Cisco CCNA and Network security certifications. Have been building computers since I was 10 (am 28 now) and I have never come across anything like this in my life. She has been content with just letting it be because the computer works to a point. I on the other hand will not have someone or something controlling my computer. The os on this computer is Windows 7 Home Premium x64 HP laptop with a 2nd gen core i-7 that runs like its a 486 and its so infected its unreal. Also the infection causes the computers to load in Windows PE mode in a virtualized environment so nothing picks it up. I have 2 desktops and a several laptops ... Read more

Hello, and thank you for reading this.

As of just today, for some weird reason, my computer has just started to hiccup and freeze out of nowhere, and it's more prominent with any program that uses the internet (i.e. Firefox, Steam, etc), but it freezes up the entire computer along with the program.

This is especially aggravating as just yesterday, my computer was working absolutely fine with no hitches or sudden slow downs, but by today, it just starts to act this way, despite me doing anything to the computer at the time.  I have also ran a complete virus scan twice to no avail, and I tried using System Restore, only for it to fail.

I'm currently running under Windows Vista Home Premium x64. I've attached a HijackThis Log, if anyone can read that.
 HijackThis Log.txt   13.05KB
  2 downloads

I would hope that this doesn't turn out to be a hardware issue, so if this is something of a software issue, I would hope I could fix this, as I really need my computer as it has important school files and such.

Answer:Computer suddenly slows down suddenly and sporadically for minutes

Hi Twistervtx and welcome to BC.Sorry for the delay in response to your thread.HijackThis doesn't enumerate 64bit systems very well, but i can see some problems in the report.P2P Warning Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking ( Frostwire, Ares, uTorrent etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true.P2P programmes form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme. Many of the programmes come bundled with other unwanted programmes, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use. When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.Having a P2P program running at startup is even more dangerous! You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice may be t... Hi,

This is my first post...

I bought a PC from a website years ago, Cube24/7, in a bit of a rush. The website in retrospect was a bit dodgy, and based on other reviews of the site, I am lucky I got something for my money at all!

It was stated to have Windows 7 on it - which turned out to be not true. After spending my cash on a PC, I then did not want to fork out for an OS (as it did not have a default one) so, alas, I used a copy of a friend?s.

It worked fine initially, but then I was greeted with the familiar message to many of ?This copy of windows is not genuine?. At first I thought I would just ignore it, but eventually went down the route of getting a product key online. This worked fine for a while, but then required me to do it every couple of weeks...

NOW this has finally caught up with me, and I cannot access my user accounts. It comes up with an error message relating to user profiles being unavailable. I have tried many things, such as going on as a guest (which works fine) and doing a system clock back or system restore, but when it asks for the administrator?s password, I get the same error relating to user accounts.

Ultimately, I am looking for any way to restore the system so that I can access my user accounts, as I now do not really want to buy Windows 7 for the PC, if the error still occurs.

Any help would be appreciated and just contact me for queries.

Thanks

Isaac

Answer:Cannot access user accounts after months of "not genuine" windows

Hello Isaac,

You're just going to simply need to purchase a legal copy of Windows, and do a clean install an activate.

Hi dunkinrick. Welcome to TSG. What browser version are you running? If Internet Explorer, you can give this a try: Open up IE, on the Toolbar up top click on on View>Text Size> and make sure your size is set to medium or whatever size you want to use to view webpages. If you don't have IE or this does not solve your problem, let us know and we'll go from there.

Hello friends!

I make a bunch of videos for YT, and ever so often, I want to make a quick video on WMM. Yesterday, I was working on a project (with a bunch of large files) when I split a clip. The first part of the clip turned black in the thumbnail section and wouldn't play in the preview. I've had this happen before, so I closed the program and reopened it but now the entire timeline was gray and neither the video would play in preview, nor the audio (an overlaid WAV) would play. So, I restarted my computer. Nothing. For 12 hours, NOTHING. So, today I decided to make sure I had all the correct updates and drivers, but when I downloaded my first update and tried to open the program it wouldn't let me and I got a new message:

"Sorry, Movie Maker can't start. Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements before trying to start the Movie Maker again, and then try to update the drivers for your video card if Movie Maker still doesn't start."

I had just updated all of the drivers, so I decided to uninstall and re-install the program. I remember an issue with this when I first downloaded it so I went on to this forum to be sure I was downloading the correct program but still NOTHING!

I am fairly computer savvy and am literally at a loss! I can edit my videos in a different program, but this particular video was about ten minutes from being complete, after working for about two hours and I would be pissed to have to start from scratch... Read more

Hi, I've been running on a T520 4239-CTO for a little over a year now without issue.  I've been getting lots of random bsod and services crashing in the last few days; even Windows 7 cannot validate itself anymore. I ran all the hardware checks in the provided Lenovo utilities and it all seems to pass.  I didn't trust this so I manually checked the smart values on the hard disk and noticed around 2400+ reallocated sectors so I decided to replace the hard disk. It should be noted that there are no viruses/malware on this machine.  After receiving the new hard disk I did a factory restore using the dvd backups I made when I received the machine.  Upon booting the new factory install on the new disk I'm still getting the same random bsod and issues with Windows 7 not being able to validate. I notice that everytime I boot now on the newly restored os that the "Microsoft Software Protection Platform" service has issues and cannot start.  I started doing some updates using the Thinkvantage tools and they're crashing too. This machine is currently on pass 4 of memtest without any errors so far. I've replaced the hard drive and from the looks of things so far the ram seems fine.  Where do I go from here?

Answer:T520 - Windows 7 - Suddenly receiving random bsod, applications crashing, windows 7 not registered

Swapped the ram and that fixed the issue. I guess memtest can pass bad ram.

So I used the Get Windows 10 app on another computer back in May or June to reserve a copy for my personal computer. However, when I open the get windows 10 app on my personal computer to sync the reservation, it doesn't provide me any option to say "i already reserved it just on a different computer and I have 3 emails from Windows to proove it!" Short of forcing the download/update, am I resigned to being in the back of the line because I didn't reserve it on my computer?

Answer:Reserved Windows 10 on another computer months ago for my computer...??

well, you have to wait, I don't know why. but if you don't want to wait, just download the mediacreationtool, get your version of windows 10, put it on USB or DVD whatever you want. then open it on Windows 7/8 and tell it you want to upgrade and keep the files and apps if you want.
The setup will download drivers and take the time it has to take if it has to, it took like 45 minutes on a laptop and it took like 10 minutes on my desktop. so it depends on how it has to prepare your computer for the update.
You could also try to open Command Prompt as an admin, and type: wuauclt.exe /updatenow
That way some people have forced windows 10 to update through Windows Update, you could try it as well if you want to have Windows 10 now. if it fails I guess the first paragraph would be a better and faster option and you can keep it if you want to clean install it later when you activate Windows 10 with free offer upgrading from 7/8 to 10.

Long story short: two computers were having home network problems (both run Windows XP Professional) so in desperation I clicked the "Create Network ID" button in the Computer Name tab in (what I assume was) the System Properties box. (I can't be sure that was the name of the box because I have no other computers running XP Pro and I can't even find that button in this installation of XP Home.) I did this on both computers simultaneously at which point both prompted me to restart. I did, and now neither computer can log in. The IDs are both the same and I'm using the same password (unless clicking that button changes your keyboard to a Dvorak layout...) but the error message tells me the domain could be the problem. So I click the Options button on the lower right of the login dialog, and all it does is hides or reveals the Shut Down button, so I have no options other than OK, Cancel, and Shut Down, none of which are helpful in the least. How can I log in again?

Hoping someone can help. A problem showed up today that hasn't been an issue before. After I enter my Winows 7 password I am taken to the 'Welcome' screen as normal but that is as far as I get and the little wheel icon just keeps spinning for ever more.
The problem doesn't show up in 'Safe Mode' and I can use that mode fine.
Two things that may or may not have been an issue here but the problem only appeared after the following -

My Kaspersky Internet Security was due for renewal so I paid for the update and downloaded and kicked off the new installation file. Part of the installation required a reboot of the PC.
After the reboot I was able to login to Win 7 at that point but when the desktop appeared a message immediately came up saying that the Firewall (I'm assuming it was the Win 7 Firewall but didn't pay full attention) detected a program it didn't like - EEventmanager.exe, which transpires is an Event Manager program for my Epson XP750 printer/scanner. I have had this printer for nearly 6 months and this firewall message has never appeared before. As I don't use that facility anyway I unchecked the box, telling the firewall to ignore it. At that point I got the spinning status wheel which wouldn't stop and I couldn't even open Task Manager so I restarted the PC in safe mode via the power button. Thinking it was the Epson Event Manager program causing the problem I uninstalled it in Control Panel. I rebooted ag... Read more

I've got a custom machine running XP service pack 2 which has decided to start locking up randomly and without warning, i can be doing something and fwoom, everything stops responding and my music starts skipping if it is playing. Sometimes it freezes immediately at startup (not since i replaced my RAM) and sometimes it can function fine for upwards of 12 hours without freezing.
I upon one restart i got an error message saying that the system has recovered from a serious error which was most likely caused by faulty ram. I have since replaced my ram and i still encounter the same problem, althought less frequently. I am at a loss, specs are as follows.

EVGA nForce 730a GeForce 8200 mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition clocked at 3.3GhZ (i tried resetting the clock speed to the original 3GhZ to no avail)
Galaxy GeForce 9600 GT 1GB Graphics Card
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 Watt PSU
Creative Labs SB X-FI Titanium Fatal1ty Champ Sound Card
Hauppauge WINTV HVR 1600 TV Tuner
Netgear WG311T 108Mbps Wireless Adapter
(formerly) Corsair 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz (2x2048MB)
(presently) 512MB of some DDR2 400MHz RAM that i found on my shelf

Answer:Windows XP suddenly locks up

I've forgotten to mention that i also tried reinstalling the graphics card drivers

All of a sudden this afternoon, no sound coming out of my computer. Not sure how or why? Volume is up on speakers, and they are carefully plugged in. Volume control on the task bar is up and not muted. Legacy audio drivers seem to be working fine. Any suggestions?

...Update. Apparently some programs have sound, like itunes. I ran and my music seems to play fine. No normal windows sounds though, and a game I just installed has no sound either...
