Which is a reasonable notebook?

Question: Which is a reasonable notebook?

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen,
I am sorely, at least I think so, of the sound advice that you hand out, on a very regular basis.
I have had an Acer Aspire One 722-C62kk with an 11.6” screen and 4GB for a couple of years. And it has done – and is doing – the job I wanted it to do; namely to take on holidays with us so we can keep in touch with friends whilst on the holiday. But we are just back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote and I must admit that I have found it s-l-o-w. I do not know anything about chips and, therefore, would be very grateful if someone could recommend a notebook with a faster chip in it. This is where I will probably annoy some of you: I would like one that is 5 to 10 times faster!! Also I am not looking for a new notebook – these all seem to come with Windows 10 which I do not like – but a second hand one with Windows 7 preferably 64Bit Home Premium or similar with USB 3.0 port(s). I am quite willing to go to £100, but for a good one am willing to stretch up to £200. If a company that trades in second hand notebooks has options and any of you know a reasonably reliable one that would also be helpful.
I know I am being picky, but at my time of life I am getting more and more specific and that is why I am asking you gentlemen.
Any and all – no matter how rude – replies will be very gratefully received.

Preferred Solution: Which is a reasonable notebook?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying a new server for the company I'm interning at. The issue is I'm somewhat clueless about IT in general, so I'm concerned an offer I've received for a Dell PowerEdge T430 server which I've pasted below is a rip off. The price I've been quoted is $4020,10.

Here are the specs:
"Server Dell PowerEdge T430 8B, (1)*Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 Processor (2.2GHz, 10C, 25MB, 8.0GT/s QPI, 85W), 32GB (2x16GB) 2400MHz RDIMM, PERC H330, DVD+/-RW, (2)*1TB SATA 6Gbps 7.2k 3.5" HD Hot Plug (up to 8x3.5"HDD), Broadcom 5720 GbE Dual Port on board, IDRAC8 Ent., (2)*750W, No Rails, 3y NBD"

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Also if it helps the initial uses of the server would be secure data storage, hosting an email service for 12 staff members, and if possible setting up a hybrid disaster recovery solution, for instance linking the service to a cloud based service like Microsoft Azure.

If anyone out there can suggest a cheaper and viable alternative that would be ace!

Best regards,

James

I keep hearing people who have fairly modern PC's (although perhaps lacking a good graphics card) talking about buying a PS3. I would like to tell them that they should really consider spending $200 to $250 for a new video card and using their PC to play games thereby saving themselves the much larger cost of a PS3.

Is this reasonable advice? If they were to upgrade an Intel P4 (3.2 MHz with adequate memory, hard drive, sound quality, etc.) by buying a fairly good quality video card, would that put the machine into a comparable quality such that it would run most games available for the PC such that it would compare fairly well to those same games running on the PS3?

It doesn't have to be extremely high quality. I'd just like to know if it would be reasonably accurate to say that upgrading a fairly modern PC (with a P4 CPU - not a Celeron) with a good quality video card would put it into roughly the same level of performance for playing games as the PS3.

Question: Reasonable prices?

What would be a reasonable price to "reimage" a machine?
(ie wipe off all the trojans/adware/spyware)

Reimage including databackup and a reinstall of the os and drivers.

Data backup being a loose sense of the term and including just music, photos, documents, email, and favorites, and just to be nice also throwing on a few apps that are essential...itunes, aim, firefox, spybot, antivirus of choice.

I know geek squad's prices...and they are...about on par I'd say for the amount of time it takes to do all of the above but what do you guys think?

Hey all,

I've been running my system under full load for twenty minutes.

I've got RMClock, CPU-Z and ATITool open to monitor, and I'm also using Orthos to stress my RAM and my CPU.

Temperatures:

LeadTek 7950GT TDH 256MB -- 90 degrees
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz -- 48 degrees [won't let me overclock yet, it's running at stock speeds with a Zalman heatsink].
Transcend 1066 2 x 1GB -- 64 degrees

These temperatures seem all right for twenty minutes of full load? I'm scrambling to find a VGA heatsink at a local store, but I've been told a graphics card of this power can safely handle temperatures of up to 100 degrees.

Noticed today that switches with 10 GbE ports are starting to become quite low in price on eBay. Is this a sign that the price is finally starting to move or are these switches junk, lacking features or not usable to attach a server or two and start playing with the speeds?

I'm mostly seeing HP 2900's but there are others too.

edit: maybe there are just rear stacking ports? The fronts must just be sfp 1 GbE?

A four month old mid-range factory built computer.Functions exactly as it should, but ignoring the sound advice "If it aint broke don't fix it" i would like it to sound less like a collection of busy fans, which it has!I am prepared to spend some more and replace the PSU, CPU's fan and even the case fan.The video card fan seems blameless, stalling for one moment doesn't change the rushing noise. The PSU is probably the most justifiable replacement. It is a bog standard ATX of 300w.I wonder if click here will do the trick. (5th down the list) the 435W job)? The case fan is a standard affair drawing warm air and pushing it out of the back. It is possibly an 8cm fan (approx 7cm between screws) and draws its power from the mobo.Probably not contributing much windrush but suggestions welcome? The CPU fan sits naked on a sort of 4 legged gantry over a very elaborate dome of fine fins and Intel trade mark. Some folks may have read my other thread... I subscribe to Norton 360 but have got the trojan Antivirus XP 2008 with its annoying porn popups and messages. Via the chat facility, Norton advisors have removed part of the problem remotely but the popups have come back and other irritations, like slow running remain. They have now escalated my call to their virus specialist and want to charge me £70 for a detailed consultation plus check of the PC and clean up. Am I being reasonable thinking that Norton 360 should have stopped the trojan in the first place and it's a bit much having to pay them to clean up. The adviser was quite aggressive saying that I should have this done straight away otherwise I might spread the virus on the internet and my ISP will cut me off.I'd be grateful for views on Norton's stance.

A long tale of woe that ends with some questions. Please bare with me in the background explanation.

For over a year I've been having occasional flurries of crashes, hangs and (rarely) BSODs. Months would go by with no problem, then dozens of crashes or hangs in a week. The event logs and rare dumps have not been helpful. People here said it sounded like hardware problem, but no diagnostics I ran could find a problem.

I took it to a pc repair shop which could find no hardware problem (and of course it would not crash or hang for them). The suggested (as did people on this forum) that it probably was ZoneAlarm Internet Security. They installed the Kaspersky Internet Security product (for a fee, of course) and said that should fix the problems. 2 days later it froze 3 times and did automatic reboots 5 times.

I took it back. It still wouldn't crash or hang for them. They said Windows probably needed to be reinstalled - that my update from Win7 Home to Pro corrupted something. Rather than mess up the installation again I asked them to do it (for a fee, of course).

During their attempts to reinstall Windows it started crashing for them. They succeeded on their 3rd attempt, ran some more tests, checked the configuration, and found problems with the ram. They said ram I had was incompatible with the mother board and buggy, but the problems could not be detected by the diagnostics. They also said they had to reinstall Windows a 4th time because the 3rd reinstallation ... Read more

Answer:Reasonable explanation for crashes?

OCZ is high quality, but it is also one of the least compatible memories on the market (meaning it works properly with the fewest hardware configurations)
I use it personally and have for years with no complaint. ...and certainly without the problems you describe, though I always verify the motherboard/ram compatibility before I purchase a motherboard.

If the ram is actually bad it can cause any number of seemingly unrelated problems and errors. Since basically everything processes through the ram and it can be only one stick or one specific memory address on a stick that actually causes the problem. It's possible this bad address can go for months without being used until a specific set of circumstances pops up.

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

About 2 minutes in total here. This is NOT a serious problem, just more of an annoyance which is intriguing me.
With 4gb ram, a reasonable dual processor and graphics card, one would expect a reasonably good performance whatever the case.
My automatic startup consists of just Avast AV, Java, and Malwarebytes although l also get additional icons on the taskbar for the Network and Sharing Center and Action Center.
I use Firefox as my main browser.
I also use SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Defraggler reasonably frequently, so l know that my system is clear of any junk, malware, spyware, and that no viruses are present.
I fire the system up in the morning, bring up Firefox and all is fine, and reasonably quick.
Do a fair amount of downloading using the MiPony download manager to access rapidshare files, but with my crap connection, the max download speed seems to hover around the 280kbs mark.
I may also have two FF sessions on the go, as well as the downloading, so whatever l do after that seems to really slow the system down.
I have even run ConvertX at the same time as all of the above and the system came to a near grinding halt.
Now l know that all of the above are processor/ram hungry but surely with my specs the computer should more than cope?
Maybe l'm missing something obvious or my dual processor system just cannot cope with more than two ram hungry programs running at the same time.
Has anyone got any ideas or do l just have to live with it.

I have four rather old HDDs that are either not recognized by the system or that cause computer shut down when connected.

Is it reasonable to attempt to repair these? It is my understanding that the majority of all HDD failures are electrical and not mechanical. If this is true, then I would conclude that most problems are caused by the replaceable control board on the HD.

BTW I have a circuit board on order to attempt the repair of a 250GByte Seagate HD (a Barracuda 7200.10).

This HD seems to be an ideal candidate for home repair because it immediately shuts down the computer when power is applied. There is a direct short from the HDs' 5 volt input pin to ground. That short circuit exists even when the board is removed from the HD.

Obtaining an exact replacement seems to be the trick. I 'think' I have done that.

Answer:Is It Reasonable/Sensible to Attempt to Repair a HDD

It's not as simple as replacing the PCB on most modern drives, you may also have to move the original ROM chip or firmware that contains the specific drive parameters to the new PCB. Unlike older drives, new drives are all slightly different and unique. With the 7200.10 a PCB swap may work because its an older drive.

I wanted to hear some opinions about the situation in the office I work in.

Recently we changed accounting software and my advice to change to Office 365 was rejected. Still all 15 employees want their emails to be safe and backed up.
Some employees don't delete their emails, so I end up with approximately 10 GB PST-file size per year per user. Of course I split them year by year. The problem is that they want to keep even pst files from 5 or more years ago. Always available. My idea is now, that I make a one time backup copy of recent years and a daily backup of the actual year.
I made some tries already with EaseUS. But I'm not satisfied.
I'd prefer not to schedule it and leave it up to the employee to decide when to make the backup. So, let's say the employee leaves earlier for some reason why leaving the PC on until 7 pm or so? Also a power cut could prevent that scheduled backup entirely from happening.
Here's a list of what I need the backup software to be able to do:

- Start the whole backup process with a double-click on an icon (on the desktop). EaseUS needs more steps incl. always having to set the Shutdown option manually.
- On the destination file storage or NAS I want to overwrite the previous file, not to create version after version. Or even better: Create a new version but delete the old version afterwards. PSTs are really a hard case since you can't really make incremental backups. I also doubt that some employees will understa... Read more

I am trying to find a touchscreen monitor that is actually priced reasonably. It needs to be between 10 and 12 inches and the pixel resolution needs to be at least 1024x768.

I can't find any for a fair price. They make all kinds of good ones though... for $250 and up! They can't be THAT expensive since you can buy android tablets for like $150. Even mouser doesn't carry touchscreen LCD panels anymore that have a greater resolution than 640x480.

I have managed to find ONE that has a somewhat reasonable price but it's sold by a shady looking seller. Half of the reviewers didn't receive a working unit and the other half did.

I call ******** on these prices. They don't cost that much to produce. Something like that shouldn't cost more than $100. I'm not willing to spend more than $150 on a touchscreen monitor unless the resolution is 1280x720 or greater and even then I'm not spending more than 175-200.

So where is a place you can buy these from that are priced reasonably? If there are none, can I buy a $100-$150 android tablet just for the LCD panel, take it apart and somehow re wire everything up for use with a PC?

Eventually, all sockets go away, but I haven't heard anything particular about 1155. Are you mistaking that for 1156, which is about gone?

As long as you have a good brand and a little bit of luck, I'd just shop on the basis of desire features and price/support.

What does "best" mean in this context?

That particular board is certainly more than you need for most purposes and would be a waste of money for a typical installation. But you may need each and every one of its features. I don't know.

I have a very annoying issue wherein the small rubber V-shaped or triangular pegs attached to the base of the extended battery of my U150 have come off; so now the laptop wobbles when I type. I've called the service center (Philippines not India), they were very nice and courteous, but had no replacement part number so they cannot replace the part even if I am under warranty! How ridiculous is that?!?!  It would be so easy to mail me a pair of pegs and I would simply superglue it on the base.  What they offered is even more absurd!  They want me to give them a $90+ deposit to send them my whole battery pack (that is working just fine) which they are willing to replace in order to get the new legs on it.  We're talking about a pair of pegs worth no more that 25-US-cents!!!  Does anyone have any solutions? Or is there some other mystical resource to get these rubber pegs replaced? This issue has been going on for two months, and Lenovo has not replied, emailed, nor called as promised by the customer service receptionist who said they would refer my claim to Lenovo.

My nephew suggested recently that I buy some extra memory for my Dell Dimensiion 8250 computer, which is a couple of years old. Knowing that I have Rambus RD-RAM, he searched the Net and told me RD-RAM was both harder to find and more expensive than he expected.

He went to PrimeWatch and found only two websites which had RD-RAM available. Then he went to eBay and told me I could pay $400 for 1G of CD1066 RD-RAM or $256 for 1G of PC 800 RD-RAM.

I have two slots of 256 RD-RAM -- PC 1066, unless I'm mistaken -- which means I have two open slots. My nephew told me I could fill the two open slots with 512 PC 1066, which would give me 1.5 G total. Or, he said, my PC could hold up to 2 G of PC 800 RD-RAM. (All of this terminology is new to me, but my nephew appears to understand it quite well.)

I remember hearing a while back that the price of memory was dropping rapidly, but my nephew told me that seems to have changed. Is it possible that I could find better prices for RD-RAM than those shown on eBay?

My wireless router does not seem to be working for Internet connectivty despite many reboots. It's (Netgear fm114p) been in use for less about 10 months. The only thing I can think of is I had some wiring work done to an electrical outlet. Since then, it started requiring power reboots during the day (due to losing a signal); then within the week (yesterday), the lights are not working correctly.

Thanks

Ok, I am basically new here and have a system I built in the middle of 2007. I am trying to see if it is viable to upgrade any of the components to make it a little more competitive for the rest of this year, but I don't know that there is much I can do with it without buying multiple components.

I have:

MSI AM2 Athlon 64/X2, PC6400 mem. capable motherboard
4600+ Athlon X2
NVIDIA 9600GT 512mb
2 gb PC6400 DDR2

I am currently running 64 bit Windows 7, and despite 2gb of memory it runs well.

Basically, I don't know if there is much that can be done with this. It's kind of stuck where it is. I could get a little faster dual core X2 processor, but I don't know that it would make much of a difference. Obviously a quad core CPU would require a new motherboard and CPU, so might as well do that with a whole new computer build. I could upgrade to 4gb of dual channel memory, but I don't know that games/programs would utilize it enough to be worth it. Video card wise, I have a 19" 1280 x 1024 monitor, so I whether or not a better video card would get a huge difference in framerate at that resolution I'm not sure.

I am primarily looking at this in regards to games like Bioshock 2, etc. coming out this year. I would just like to run those newer games a little better for this year until I anticipate building a new system in 2011. I have heard a lot of people say that 4gb of memory isn't totally used by most applications yet. I have heard that un... Read more

I believe that I have an on-board graphics card installed on my computer. Previously I was able to use Google Earth, but for some unknown reason I was no longer able to use this programme. Various alternatives was advised via Google help and error messages, but none seem to work.My remaining alternative (according to Google) is to get a 'better' graphics card.Any suggestions for a straight forward replacement. Not into high speed gaming or fancy high capacity 3 D's. Something cheap and simple, with possible links would be ideal.Final question: Is it possible to fit an additional graphics card to on-board system!.

Answer:Cheap and reasonable graphics card

Yes it is possible for you to have additional graphics, you will have to disable your onboard graphics once you have a new graphics card.Do you know what expansion slots you have available so that suggestions for graphics cards can be suited to your needs.

My other question is how much does it cost to upgrade Vista 32bit to Vista 64bit? My software source (school) only sells the 32bit versions (for hella cheap).

Should I suck it up and get Vista Home 64bit from Newegg for $99 or try to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit (which hopefully would be cheaper)?

Answer:what's a reasonable price for vista home 64?

Buy the 32bit version from your school, and acquire a 64bit disc by other means. Your serial will work on either (Vista/Win7 are both this way).

Pulling my hair out here...

I just got a new monitor, and while installing that accidentally uninstalled the network card. Whoops. Talked to tech support and they said I had to do a reinstall of Windows to get it back, pretty much. So I did, checking "keep files". All went well, until I tried to get into my files. I used to share this computer with others so all of my files under "My Documents" were unshareable under the old system - I'm assuming that's why, when I tried to get to *my* user data, it kept telling me no. After some searching, I found a webpage telling me to reboot in safe mode, go into the folder properties, and reset the owner of those files to my new profile. I did, and everything was restored - except that the files in My Pictures and My Music are all still unaccessible. I can get to them, I can view them, the properties show that they have sizes which seem reasonable for full, normal files - but when I open any of my photos I get nothing - in the Windows Picture and Fax viewer, for instance, I get "no preview available". I've tried renaming the files, moving them, copying them, e-mailing them - nothing. The music files are the same - look normal, but when I try and play them they open up as a 0 second music file. Name and info is available, but no music.

In short: any help vastly appreciated. This is the second time in two years I've lost my vacation photos, last year my camera got stolen Maybe I need to ... Read more

I essentially skipped Vista completely (bought it with the hardware, installed it, then discarded it) and started with the 7000 beta. Am currently toying with 7077 on a new, 3-week-old monster machine that needs to shift into productive use very soon.

Moving the "Documents and Settings" folder was easy back in XP days. It appears to be a lot more complicated now. However, after a bit of reading, I've come up with the following:
Clean install (in this case, 7077 x64) as user 'username'
Enable 'Administrator' account
Log out of 'username' and log into 'Administrator'
Continue with computer setup using the 'Administrator' account
Delete both the account and files for 'username'
Hack the registry to alter the location for new user accounts
-- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList]
-- Replace '%SystemDrive%\Users' with 'D:\Users' for the 'ProfilesDirectory' key
Create a new account for 'username' with admin privileges which appears as D:\Users\username\...
Log out of the 'Administrator' account (leaving it active and located in the C:\Users folder)
Log into the new 'username' admin account and go about business as usual.
(There will be four additional non-admin accounts created on this machine -- all of them located in the D:\Users folder.)
My question is: Does this seem a valid approach to separating the Users folder from the system drive? Or, am I setting myself up for problems?

Hi guys!!

Okay, my camcorder is a Panasonic GS-150 (I bought it 1 year ago and still not for sure if that was a good purchase or not, but oh well i'm stuck with it now) and I mostly use it to make movies w/friends and family. I write screenplays and direct them, act in them, what not and I'm hoping to finally upgrade to a better video editing software besides Windows Movie Maker. Now, I have no big complaints about WMM, its been very kind to me and user friendly, but I've way over-used all the transitions and video effects they have to offer. Also, my ideal software would have the ability to put a clip on top of a clip. I don't even know if that's possible, but it sounds like a neat idea to me sense I don't have a green screen handy! I am just a meager wanna-be M. Night Shyamalan here My budget is minimal and I'm hoping not to exceed $80.

Any advise, opinions, tips & tricks and what-not is very appreciated!! THANKS GUYS! YOUR AWESOME!

Hi,

I need to replace a TP-Link N600 router that is constantly dropping G-wifi. The N seems stable enough but TP-Link customer disservice is working at it's peak. Totally hopeless. I have been trying to get them to to take it back for warranty-repairs and all they keep telling me to do is update the firmware.

I had done that before I even contacted them the first time. I am now using some of their Beta firmware and still no change. I have had it with TP-Link.

So, looking for 4 x Gigabit LAN, G and N wifi at 450 to 600 Gb. An AC-wifi might be nice, but when N is working right, it does all I need. I still need G for my windows phone. {sigh}

I have just tried Zyxel, Edimax and Netgear. Returned them all as the TP-Link when running right had much better power output on both G and N ate distances. Linksys, not even slightly interested in, so what's left? If a Buffalo, I'd want a non-DD-Wrt version. DD-Wrt is great but too time consuming to configure.

Anyone with personal experience of a router they love that doesn't cost a $100+, care to chime in here.

Thanks

Answer:Decent Router at reasonable price? NOT TP-Link

I got a little-known Router from Western Digital [yeah, the hard drive company] over a year and a half ago, cost $60. When I first got it I'd have to turn the Wi-Fi off [switch on the front] about once a week to re-establish it. After about a month I got a firmware update for it and haven't had a problem since. It's been running 24/7 since 9/11 but we had a transformer blow down the road that day and were without power 6AM until about 7PM that day. Didn't help to also have 10" of snow.

I've set up D-Link and Netgear Routers and haven't had call-backs on them yet.

Hi, I've planned to buy  a  good LTE WWAN adapter for my T440 recently, but going though many negative opinions on officially supported EM7345  I think it's point less to spend many on it. I really like EM7455 but I am sure I will fall into the problem with "unsupported WWAN card ..."  which I know I can work around, but would prefer a clean solution instead. Is there any good alternative to EM7345 for T440 to get it working out of the box? Ideal would be official BIOS with EM7455 enabled in BIOS whitelist, which I believe is unlikely.

My Computer recently broke down to an irreparable level, this could not have come at a worse time since I will be cash strapped for the next 6 or so months. Though I have found an AMD Athlon 3800+ X2 system for sale for only $125AUD. Pretty much a barebones system with XP SP2, I can swap my hard drives and Graphics card to this computer.

The question I'm wondering is, due to my non-experience with AMD, I'm not sure how it will handle compared to my other ancient system.

Main uses for the computer were: Browsing, Photo-editing, Occasional Video-Editing and some light Gaming(Crysis/COD/Oblivion, only with settings set to medium and not planning to purchase any more graphic intensive games) Not sure if this computer will handle them.

Oh and incase this post doesn't already show the specs for my last computer, the basics were.

320GB Hard Drive
160GB OS Hard Drive
250 Watt PSU (Yes I know, very bad considering the video card)
Asus ATI Radeon 4670

Greetings,

Right now with the current set of GPOs (like three dozen or so) and configuration it takes approximately 1-3 minutes for users to login. Our old computer system with terminal servers would take 2-3 minutes for users to login, or if about the same time -- there were other issues such as horribly under-specced and overloaded servers with 40 users per terminal server.

With a brand new set of GPOs (about a dozen or less) and OU structure that I carefully made and designed after spending several hours analyzing the existing GPOs and OU structure, it takes on average 16 seconds to login (best being 12 seconds, worst being 22 seconds). This uses VMware View Persona management storing profiles at \\srv-persona1\EXP_Profiles$\%username%. This is currently not being used by our North American environment.

If we use a persistent local profile through VMware View, login time is 2 seconds flat. Our Asian environment of at least 100 users uses this + the brand new set of GPOs and OU structure I created, but without VMware View Persona management (again -- persistent local profile).

At minimum, my supervisor is wanting to get the login time below 10 seconds -- aiming for 2 seconds, while using Persona management. He told me he would like to get rid of all of the GPOs (or as much as possible). I responded saying this is unrealistic and wrong, defeating the purpose of why GPOs as a feature exists and would also result in higher maintenance time and more frequent reprovi... Read more

Hi,

Yes, I have a Window's Vista Toshiba laptop, Service Pack 2.  We have fibre optic service through our local phone company and a router in the house.

I have my browsers set to open to https://www.google.com  for the sole purpose of phishing prevention.  If this is not what I think it is, please correct me on this first point.  When I don't have a secure connection, a message pops up saying the connection isn't secure.  I've assumed this was phishing.  Again, is that a correct assumption?  Second, when I have that message appear, often I've disconnected the router and plugged it in later, and for the most part that has 'solved' the connection problems......but, that gets old.  Especially since these issues happen often multiple times a day.

My current security is Microsoft Security Essentials, which I know went obsolete with XP, but is still good with Vista (?).  I also have as a back up, Emisoft Anti-Malware (free) for scanning purposes.  I tried their 'Protection' which is given in the beggining on trial with Security Essentials deleted, but stopped it before it's time trial was up because of how slow it made the computer.  Also, I've tried Malwarebytes Real Time Potection with similar results.  I then used HitmanPro, first on free trial, than after that was over for awhile, I decided to buy into it's annual cost.  HitmanPro, I have found, scare's off the 'phish'er's most of the t... Hi all,
I am on dial up connection now, i pay $20 a month for unlimited use to another internet provider on top of my normal Telstra bill and its been ok as far as $$ & speed for what i have been using it for, but my new computor will have a DVD & CD in it and i would like to be able to sometimes download movies and songs with it and the dialup i think will be far to slow for that type of use.
Its not only that, but when i use the internet on the same line as phone calls, i am missing a lot of calls and others in the house are getting pretty irrritated with me being always on the net.
I am a bit restricted as far as money goes because i am on a diability pension,
so i am looking for a reasonable priced provider that will suit my needs without going to overboard with the prices and will keep the phone clear for all other normal phone calls.
I have been looking at a few differant deals but i see that if you go over a certain amount of m'bytes they get stuck into you for excess, which looks like a bit of a trap to me.
I would even be happy with normal dialup speeds during the day [ when i can get on it] and downloading stuff at off peak times or during the nights.
Or am i asking for to much for to little?
Thanks in advance for any idea's.
Tuby

Answer:Any Aussies know of a reasonable priced cable connection provider

Try Optus ADSL I think they have packages that include your phone and some free local calls. I'm not sure about ADSL but with cable when you exceed your limit they don't charge extra they just limit you to dialup speed.

I have a brand new W530 with the 500 GB HD -- 445 GB actual total space in C: ("Windows7_OS"), including about 85 GB of OS, pre-installed applications, and Lenovo bloat-ware).  I plan to create a separate user-data partition by stealing space from the OS partition, call it E:, and to re-direct user Documents, Pictures, etc. directories plus the Outlook PST file there.  Thus C: will be reserved mainly for Windows, Page File, Crash Dump, Restore Points, and new software installation. Any thoughts about a reasonable division of drive space between these two partitions?  Coming from Windows XP 32bit on a much smaller HD, I have little idea what to expect in terms comfortable space requriements for Windows 7 64bit.  (I realize I can re-size the partitions later, but it seems best to start with realistic allocations...) -- JCW2

Answer:What is a Reasonable Tradeoff Between System and Data Space in Windows 7 64bit?

It is hard to comment without some idea how the machine will be used. Some applications are not very well behaved and install on the c: drive regardless of what you do. Some functions, like the briefcase functions in windows 7 are harder to get off c:, although it can be done. (I got it right the second time I tried) If you share files using briefcase, you end may up with most of your data on c:. I decided I wanted to boot from an SSD, but I needed more data, so I put in a 256GB mSATA drive and moved my boot partition there. I used my entire HD for data. That worked out well for me.

I received the new Thinkpad x61s yesterday, ordered 3 weeks ago. I had chosen the Intel wireless wifi link 4965AGN for it, but when I received it yesterday I found they actually installed a 4965AG. This is shown in all the places: the system information, the device manager, as well as the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. I have created screen shots to show the information, though I don't see anyway to attach the files here. I called Lenovo yesterday as soon as I found the problem. I thought the two obvious solutions would be to either send back the laptop for replacement of the wireless card by IBM/Lenovo, or to have them send me the correct card and I replace it by myself. Since the model is still being offered on sale, they certainly have the 4965AGN card. I was transferred back and forth on the phone between various depts. The last rep yesterday said they couldn't replace the card for me (why? "because it's just not how we do it." Instead they do put the wrong card?), nor can they send me a replacement card (said it would void warranty if I install it myself, which contradicts another rep. Could someone please confirm either way?). He said I had to either return the laptop for refund or get credit for the difference between the two cards. Neither of these is what I would like to accept. And I find it neither reasonable nor necessary. I called them today again. Answer:Lenovo messed up my wireless card on my new laptop and refuses a reasonable solution?!

I understand your frustration, but there is a thing I don't get it. By the fact that Intel doesn't have pcie network adapter card model 4965AG. They have only 4965AGN, which is the one you are supposed to get, and 3945BG/ABG for 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g consecutively. I suspect 4965AG is typo or something? but this way it's pretty hard for Lenovo to believe you as well. The question is how you can identify your network card then? If device manager really says that, you may like to update driver.I recommend you get into this card properties in device manager and check for Hardware Ids, for 4965AGN it should be VEN_8086&DEV4230&SUBSYS_11108086. If it's really a wrong one, I don't see that you couldn't get a replacement. The worst case is you may have to ship your unit back to repair center, I guess. note: I'm not related to Lenovo in anyway! I was pissed about their service too/ Edited: I was totally wrong. There is 4965AG. It's basically the same one with 802.11n disabled. However, it's not the same part number. 42T0865, 42T0867, 42T0869, 42T0871, 42T0905 : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n enabled)42T0873, 42T0875, 42T0877, 42T0879, : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n disabled) First, you have to check this part number on the box to see if it matches 11n disabled. Then check with your order and it's time to call them again. Message Edited by sipp11 on 01-21-2009 01:56 PM

2 weeks ago my Yoga 900 stops charging and the power cord starts making a popping sound from the wall socket (thank god it didn't start a fire).  So it's obvious the power cord is bad.  I call support and the agent says it's not the power cord and he can fix it (yes I did try to explain about the popping noise and small arcs of electricity it is making from the wall socket) so he remotes in and tries making some changes and even goes so far as to say the wall socket is the issue and not my power cord.  Finally after an hour of testing he is finally convinced that it's the power cord.  He puts in the order for a new cord to be sent out and tells me 3 business days (I'm finding out by reading through the forums that he lied directly to me as there are complaints about the cord being on back order about a month before I called) and of course after 3 business days nothing.  I then try looking up online to see if I can track the order and I find out that the ticket number they emailed to me doesn't exist.  After 3 or 4 calls and 1.5 weeks I finally get an agent who states that everything is put in correctly, they have the cord and she can't find out why it just hasn't been shipped and has escalated to management.

A problem has recently developed with my Envy notebook.   About 2 weeks ago my entire wireless network began slowing down when on it.   Noticeable on all devices.    When my provider came out, checked and tweaked some issues it appeared to be ok.   I went on with my daughers HP laptop and was drawing 20-24 mbps all over the house. When I reconnected mine to the system I was only pulling 6, 3, 5, up and down.   It doesn't start right away but after a few minutes.   So I put my duaghers right next ot mine and low and behold, when I ran her's it pulled 3 - 6 also.   So I turned my wi-fi off and hers' popped right back up.   I have also tried this with an old XP mini, my i-pads etc.   As soon as mine gets on the network the speed crashes.    This also happens with no one else home and no other devies conncted. I have downloaded the latest up to date Intel driver for this network adapter and it hasn't changed anything. Any ideas?

Bill_Ving Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about wireless networking poor performance and wanted to help. My immediate guess is that you might have mixed-mode networking going on.  This happens when you have two different PCs networking in two different modes -- one using "G", the other using "N".  The wireless router (or access point) can optimize performance for either mode, but not for both.  So, the "G" mode drags down the performance of the "N" mode PC, but even worse, with the router set for mixed modes, it performs more slowly than with either PC connected by itself. Here are some other troubleshooting steps you can try: HP PCs - Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet (Windows 8) | HP® Customer SupportGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------Please click "Accept As Solution" on the post that solves your issue to help others find the solution. Please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on the left of the Reply button to say thanks fopr my help.========================================================================

I made a Google notebook to keep the minutes of a meeting my business partners and I held last weekend. I made them all collaborators on the notebook so they could all make any changes or annotations they felt necessary. However, when they go to access this notebook they are prompted for a password.

There is nowhere (at least that I can find) to even choose to password protect the notebook let alone change the password. I'm pretty confused as to what password the notebook could be. The only thing I can think of is that it's asking for the password to my gmail account, which I don't really want to be handing out. Any ideas on this one gang?

We've got a desktop hooked into a linksys B router, and a notebook that accesses the internet wirelessly thru that router. lately we havent been able to get a decent connection with the notebook, and if we've gotten any at all, it gets dropped soon. is the desktop getting the majority of the bandwidth, which is eliminating the notebook from getting enough? if so, is there anyway to limit the amount that the desktop is getting?

New here and so I hope that I am posting in the correct place.
My new notebook an M50-MX5 was in the warranty depot as we thought it had a dvd burning problem, however that was not the case; it was the media.

Anyway before it was sent into the toshiba warranty depot the level 2 tech phone support said to get the computer to be like it was when I unboxed it 2 days earlier, this was last month.
And so to my frustration all of my programs were removed, however before doing this the software techie at the office Ghosted it to my Western Digital Storage Unit and then sent it off to the Warranty Depot.

While it was in the shop I used my 3 yr old toshiba satellite 2410 which I am now typing on at this moment.
I was finally able to get the software tech from the office to reGhost my new toshiba M50 on this past Saturday and left it with him for a couple of hrs and then returned to pick it up as there was not much in the way of programs on it and so it wouldn't take long to Ghost the Images back.

Well, in my Western Digital Storage unit are Ghosts of this 3 year old satellite that I am presently using.
After the techie got my Restore Disk installed and tried to reGhost the image onto the New M50, it crashed.

He was using the wrong Ghost, he was using the one that was from this unit???
I was not happy, especially after he claimed that he now had it Ghosted with the proper Image and I tried it out and it was very sloooooow to Boot. He said it was my Norton 2006.

Something you might want to try (it's a pita) is a repair of windows - this may fix some of the slowness issues you're seeing. The install program he's talking about is probably the U3 component of many larger USB pen drives. I think it's on most of Sandisk's newer large drives. A repair of windows might also take care of this. I seriously doubt that putting the wrong image on the machine and then putting another image on could do any damage to the machine itself - the folks here at my job do it all the time.

My own notebook (Asus EEE PC S101), running Windows XP service pack 3) was twice redirected to an unknown website when I wanted to visit the Guardian newspaper website. I was using IE version 8. Then the notebook froze. When this happened, I had to switch it off without using Cleanup, which I have used safely for a long time. When I had switched it on again, I used Firefox to go to the Techsupport Forum. I followed the instructions to download dds.scr and began running it. Then the notebook froze again. It still tells me "Two logs shall be created on your desktop" Now the cursor does not move any more either. I write this from another notebook, but I cannot create a logfile,m as everything is frozen on my own notebook. Help, please,

My wife has a two-year-old Samsung notebook. Recently when she unplugged it the machine cut off, even though the battery said 79% charged (it wouldn't charge any further). I figured that the battery was bad so I bought another one from Amazon.

This one charges to 100% percent and does exactly the same thing. I'm perplexed but think there's something going on with the motherboard that won't let it use battery juice, even if Windows 8.1 says it's 100% charged.

I've tried the hold the power button down for 1 min with the battery out trick to no avail.

Any ideas? I'm stumped and think I might need to get her another notebook.

Thanks, Robert

Answer:Resetar BIOS Notebook B490 / Reset BIOS Notebook B490

Check bios entries for boot order and disable PXE (network) boot. Also run diagnostics on HDD while in BIOS and check to see if HDD problems show up.Last - if no hard drive issue is present, and your computer says no system disk present you may have an issue with Windows OS or the boot loader it uses. Boot from Windows DVD or EasyBCD emergency disk to repair any issues with the Windows boot loader.Good luckCB

I have an old spare SONY Notebook with a 800 MHz processor and only 128 MB or RAM. The hard drive got reformatted and everything was wiped off the drive. (It's a long story.) That was no biggie, since there wasn't anything there worth saving. I've re-installed DOS and would like to install Windows 98, but the program disk for 98 is a CD. I cannot get the CD drive on my SONY to operate. All I can load are floppy disks at this time.

Can anyone tell me how to get the CD drive to operate?

I am really having a hard time finding the actual model DV7 notebook I have. The tag on the bottom only says DV7 and there are so many additional numbers ie: Dv7-1001, 1002 etc when u try to look up drivers. I am having a really hard time getting my Blue Ray drive to play any Blue Ray discs and need to find whatever drivers make it work after upgrading to Windows 7 64bit. Any help would be appreciated because it is really frustrating. I've tried every driver I can find from HP and Cyberlink and nothing lets me play all my discs. Mainly anything newer than 2 years ago won't play at all. The drive is spinning it and the drive shows a Blue ray in the description but it says Load disc and doesn't do anything from there. It worked perfectly until i went to Win 7. I even tried the Vista drivers in the Recovery console but still won't work. Thank you for any help.

If my notebook has both wireless network adapter and wired NIC, and both of them are connected to an Access Point and plugged with a RJ-45 network cable(both AP and network cable is linked to a router which has Internet connection), when I use the network connection such as web browsing, which NIC actually used by the computer to go out ?

And, will it slow down the connection if I do so ? Or should I disable the wireless interface when I'm plugged with a network cable ?

Any recommended website to refer?

I have an old HP notebook from about 1999. I sometimes use it in the garage to display repair manuals or other places just for very simple things where I wouldn't want to bring my newer notebook.

I currently have Windows 2000 installed on it (originally came with 98SE) and it is understandably really slow on most websites. I was curious if there were any Linux versions that would work better on it.

It has a Celeron 433mhz and 380MB RAM.

Answer:OS for Old Notebook

There are some Linux distros tailored for low powered or much older hardware - meaning the limited resources of those machines, more accurately - like DSL (DamnSmallLinux), PuppyLinux, Tiny Core Linux, Peppermint, or maybe even elementaryOS which is a new Ubuntu offshoot that strips out a lot of inessential stuff and makes it somewhat "lighter" on resources but it's still Ubuntu at the core.

As for using it to browse websites, it'll choke regardless of the OS mainly because of the entirely-too-overloaded graphical and interactive nature of most websites nowadays. Flash banners, even animated GIFs would most likely put a severe strain on that old Celeron when you get several of them going at one time.

But those names I mentioned should give you some ideas. All of them can be burned to a CD and used as a LiveCD meaning you can get some idea of how it'll run by simply booting off the CD and not actually installing the OS (which you probably already know is possible). One aspect would be that you should get better performance if you do install the OS since you'd be using the faster hard drive - even an older machine like that one with a slow 4200 or 5400 rpm hard drive is still way way faster than whatever optical that 12+ year old machine currently has.

Check 'em out, see which one seems to work best and give it a go.

I have a dell inspiron 4000 notebook that has no CD Rom drive and no floppy drive, I plan to buy a external CD Rom to use with ny notebook but some question arise, (1) if I format my hardrive and install a new OS before the OS is install would the computer recognized my external CD Rom? (2) If I can't use my CD Rom then would it better to buy an hard drive adapter to hook it up to my desktop PC and format the notebook hard drive and install the OS from that machine( ONLY THE OS NOT THE DRIVER FOR ANY EQUIPMENT)

Answer:CD Rom for notebook

1. Since the external cd rom device would probably be a parallel port or USB kind, the computer will not see it before you install the OS
2.No . Hooking up the laptop hdd and formated, it's ok no problem there, but once you install the OS on it , the OS will try to install the drivers for whatever the hardware is inside the PC. For instance , let's say that the laptop has a Intel chipset , and the desktop has a VIA chipset, well the OS will try to install the drivers for the VIA and you need the Intel ones..
Best you can do is to make sure that the cd rom driver that you will buy cames with DOS drivers . Then format the hard drive on the laptop ( using the desktop machine ) and install the cd rom DOS drivers on it. Then hook up the hard drive back to the laptop and connect the cd rom drive. Boot up and you should have access to the cd rom drive at that point.

Looking at the specifications of the msi notebook gs60 2pm on the msi website it says that there is an intel i7 processor and 256gb ssd as well as 1tb hdd. My laptop is the exact same model however has i5 and only the 1tb HDD, why is this?
Also my hdd broke the other day so i lost all my data. Upon wishing to buy a new system storage SSD preferably i saw that the model specs online issues 2 m.2 SSD ports. However upon opening my notebook to check for any motherboard issues i only see one port available for use whereas the other one has been soldered shut and not accessible to put an adapter to have 2 m.2 SSD ports why is this?
Lastly, would my notebook be able to run on just one 500gb m.2 SSD?
Thanks, any advice/comments would be appreciated :)

What kind of money are you looking at spending? In my experience, I would stay away from Toshiba's. They tend to have keyboard and overheating problems. Depending on your budget of course....I would look at an IBM Thinkpad maybe.

Question: HP notebook

My son has a dv9819wm notebook and it started having lines running across the screen and you could not see to do anything but would have to turn off and restart. I read on the HP site that the Bios and the video driver needs to be updated so I was going to do that but now, it will start booting up and you can see fine, but then the screen goes blank before you can get logged in to do anything. Then it shuts down. Please help.
Thanks!

Answer:HP notebook

At what point does the screen go blank? Are there lines on the screen even when it's booting up, or was that only previously, before it started going blank? And it shuts down EVERY time, on it's own?

Check if you can see anything on the screen when you hold it close to a light - look very close for even the faintest image.

I'm looking to purchase an average spec laptop with a very maximum budget 0f £700, but looking for top value and would go for a lower spec if it was an excellent notebook for the money. I'm looking to buy after Jan but could wait until about March at the latest.Points to note:* This is to be used along side my home PC for wireless compatibility around the house, downloading and demanding tasks could be carried out on the main PC* Main use would be for entertainment on frequent train travel / at work and wireless capability at home (so weight and battery life are both important issues)* Suitable spec for offline gaming, although this is a lesser priority after weight and value*Wireless capability is a must
