Preferred Solution: Lost bitlocker pasword and recovery key but have the recovery key identification

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey Guys,
Im new here so apologies if this in the wrong section.
Basically, massive problem here - I have a WD MyBook External HDD and have used BitLocker to Go on it from Windows 7 RC, and I kept the recovery key in my main HD Documents folder. (This was a x86 install).
Last night I (stupidly) backed up the key to the External HDD automatically forgetting it would be locked later (as it unlocks on startup so I forget it would be secured elsewhere) and went ahead to clean format my PC to a Windows 7 x64 RTM Install.

Now, when I come to plug in the drive today, instead of prompting for a password as it SHOULD, I instead am askked for the recovery key which I stupidly enclosed in the External HD itself.

Naturally, this External Drive contains my life, several GB of music, all of my college work, images, videos and so forth and I cannot really do with losing it all.

The only other information I can give is that at no point was the HD fully encrypted by BLocker, instead I used to cancel it at each start up and it never passed 3.5% so does this mean not ALL of the data is encrypted and maybe the key I copied into there last night may still be safe (no BL encryption went on after copying it?)

If so, how would I go about possibly finding this? Is there any other way to access the drive without getting the BLocker popup? I already tried a Live boot disk, cmd prompt etc?

Thank you.

Any suggestions in recovering the key which is already backed up in the encrypted HDD.

thinking to format HDD and than attempt data recovery but not sure if i will be able to recover all or nothing.

Answer:Bitlocker Recovery Key - lost

Hello Teky, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you format the encrypted drive, it will pretty much destroy any chance of recovering the drive.

If you don't have the BitLocker recovery key or password, then decrypting or recovering the drive will just about be impossible.

Hi,
Actually i saved data in partition, then after added bitlocker security.
I have password and key also.
Then I unlocked it for sometime, Due to my friend mistake, he deleted entire data from drive (which was enabled for bitlock). Data was huge so it just deleted without going to recyclebin.
So now i can recover data with DATA RECOVERY TOOL from partition.
But Its encrypted. bcuz in that drive data was encrypted.
So when i try to access its marked as not read (encrypted).
I think there is no way to put same data back in bitlock cover and unlock it or other solution.
If you have some suggestions, Please suggest.

Answer:Lost my windows bitlocker drive encryption recovery key

Hello @Destro78 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. BitLocker keys (for personal devices) are stored inside or in many case they are back-up to Microsoft cloud with your Microsoft account. Since this is a tablet, I suspect that I suspect your recovery key is available in Microsoft's OneDrive spaceHere are instructions how you can recover the key as well as how to get back to business.>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html  >> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=237614https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey Login to the MS account there and check.Use the key to login to your PC.Eventually, if you prefer you can disable BitLocker and turn off device encryption, or save/print the key offlinePlease, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it.  More info - re. I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

Answer:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

Windows XP just decided I need an administrator password. This is what I was doing at the time:

From C:\Windows\Repair, I just did a "Copy Software C:\Windows\system32\config" from the recovery console in hopes of repairing boot problems with my P.C.

I was able to access the console just fine. It asked me which O/S I wanted to log on to and I selected the the number one and hit enter. I only have one O/S.

It asked me for an administrator password and I just hit enter again and it dropped to the command line and everything was fine. Except for the fact that when I rebooted, the P.C. complained about not having the system file as well.

I went back in to recovery console and did the same as above except I copied "System" this time and rebooted. The P.C. complained about lsass.exe, So I decided to copy all five files of the hive from C:\Windows\Repair.

The only problem is that when it asks for an administrator password now, It will not accept "enter" as the password.

There is no admin password for the P.C. There never has been, and now I can't get in to my own system to finish what I started.

Has anybody encountered this problem?

help.

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

Answer:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

Hello - please bear in mind that I am not technically proficient, but in fairness i don't think one should be.  As the Lenovo doesn't come with a back-up or recovery disc, I obviously need to make up my own.  I thought that the OneKey recovery system would lead me through it (it says it's "easy-to-use"), but right away I'm confused:  what's the difference between "System Backup" and "System Recovery"?  I keep reading the blurb and I've read the "Help" file, but I'm not getting any closer to understanding  The System Backup seems to require 98.9 GB space, which obviously the hidden drive doesn't have.  I'd need a stack of DVD-Rs for this (I was kind of hoping two or three) or a whole new removable drive  -- does this seem right?  But, again, what am I looking for, a System Backup or a System Recovery?  On my old Acer, it used to lead you through this step by step and it was incredibly simple.  Now, it seems the only simple thing is me.  Any patient help would be much appreciated.  Thanking in advance, Adam K.

Answer:completely lost - Creating a recovery disc for IdeaPad Z580 (and OneKey Recovery)

They are similar. One difference is that if the disk is defective you cant use OKR anymore. Thus you can't do any restoration yourself. You will have to send in your unit to Lenovo to have the disk replaced and your system restored to factory default. You don't need a stack of DVD-Rs to save your backup ... System backup files can be saved in an external Hdd drive plus the creation of a Repair DVD disk for startup and restoration purposes.

I bought lenovo thinkpad X230 in January 2013. I made a recovery USB on a 16 GB pendrive. I bought a windows 8 pro upgrade offer as well. But i did not install it at that time and kept it for future use.  About a week ago I installed windwos 8 on my system in dual boot mode making a partition on primary HDD.everything went ok with only problem that my windows 8 did not activate. I was ok with that. But when i tried F11 recovery function, it was not working. So i tried factory reset through recovery USB i created earlier. It opened up and said BOOTMGR missing. Later with some research I realized that i didnt make USB active (bootable) before burning it.(Though this is ridiculous considering, tools provided must have done that. Like when you make windows bootable.) With all this(and me panicking), I tried backing up my data with image i created through R & R tool. After back up, I lost my recovery partition on HDD. And I guess i accidentally deleted System_DRV partition as well.  Though my computer is running fine. I need a bootable media. it would be great if you can provide it. Also if you can restore my comp to factory setting with recovery partition, it would be great. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

You can either get a hold of Vista installation disks and install it manually, or call Lenovo support and ask for recovery disks. They may charge you for the disks as you are supposed to create your own recovery disks.

Hi
I used CLEAN in DISKPART and i delete all partitions of my only disk.
Now i dont have any OS on my laptop and i want recover partition by "Partition Wizard" or "Test Disk" that can boot from CD but i fear that this bootable program overwrite on my only disk to load itself and some part of my data will be lost.
Am i right?
I must apologize because of my weak language skills.

Answer:May i lost my data in recovery by bootable recovery programs?

It depends on how valuable your data was and much you want to spend to get it back. The best chance you would have of retrieving your data would be to take your hard drive to a professional recovery service, explain to them the exact steps you did to delete your partitions and pay the professionals to retrieve your data.

I have successfully - many, many years ago - recovered a deleted partition using software that I purchased, but I can't remember exactly which software it was - I only used it once.

Software such as this:
Free Partition Recovery Software - EaseUS Partition Recovery.

Is meant to be booted from CD/DVD/USB and not write to the hard drive so that it can read possible markers left on the hard drive to indicate where the partitions used to be and restore them.

Okay, it's dumb question time....
I'm going through a load of unlabeled USB drives of varying sizes, from 8GB upwards. Several of them appear to be Dell OS Recovery drives that I've created at some point, and then stupidly not labeled. I'm sure I meant to label them, I just got distracted in the moment before I managed to.
The problem is, I've got a number of different Dell systems. There's a Precision M4600, a Precision 5510, an Inspiron Mini 3010, a Venue 11 Pro (7140), and a now dead Venue 8.
How do I know which computer the recovery media I have in my hand is for? Frankly, how do I work out which version of Windows is on it easily?
I know it's not going to be the M4600 - I never created media for that, and it's unlikely to be the 5510 as I actually bought USB media for that when I bought the laptop, and that's nicely labeled. So... is it for the Inspiron Mini, or one of the two Venues, or is it even older than that, from one of the many, many Dells or Alienware systems I've had over the last few years?
I really wish there was a nice .txt file or .inf file that I could just look in and see, but I can't find anything like that for the life of me
So... anyone got any bright ideas?
Here's the root directory of one of the drives...

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Assuming that the harddrive integrity is still ok , you may simply proceed to a clean installation of windows if other repair option would not work .

Copy of  the recovery image can be ordered at tech support for your OS version specific to your pc along with the preset drivers needed . Do you stillo recall the windows version you had originally?

Alternate option is to get your ISO similar to the original Windows version that came with your pc .

My daughter managed to wreck Vista on her laptop. Trouble now is, that she can't find her recovery disk, and formatted the whole c: drive. Is there any way she can get the Os from somewhere, as she still has her serial number..good job it's stuck to the bottom of the lappy.

Answer:Re: lost recovery disc and recovery partition

As I see, you have no more options as :

1 Order [Recovery disk|https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx] from Toshiba for money and wait for 2 weeks
2 Get Windows copy to install. All Toshiba drivers/utilities you can download from [Toshiba Driver Page|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp]
If you need assistance in driver installation order, can help you

The product key she has belongs to original recovery image you got with your notebook and it is not some ?universal key? that you can use with every OS installation.

Question: BitLocker Recovery

I started up my unit to be confronted with a message to provide a BitLocker recovery key, I do not have one and never set this up.I have tried following the instructions to do a system reset but it doesn't work and reverts to the Choose an Option screen.I have product key ID etcHelp!!!

Answer:BitLocker Recovery

BitLocker can not be inadvertently turned on. Someone who has access to your notebook has encrypted the drive with Bitlocker technology. Unless you have the password, you do have a severe problem. Unencrypting the hard disk will be very expensive, that is, if it can be done.http://www.lostpassword.com/hdd-decryption.htm  There are companies that claim to be able to do it, but there is unlikely to be a guarantee that it will work. https://www.google.nl/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=how+to+remove+bitlocker+...

We have setup windows 7 enterprise and have encrypted the machine. Everytime i reboot it asks for the recovery key. I have done the following. We have MBAM setup and the keys are stored automatically. I have had success with older models but this specific model
is giving me a hard time.

1. Made the C drive the first boot device

2. Paused bitlocker, rebooted and resumed.

3. Removed Encryption. Rebooted and encrypted again.

4. Downgraded TPM to 1.2 from 2.0

Hi,

I have a new Windows 8.1 machine and I wish to encrypt the drive using Bitlocker. It gives me 4 options to save a recovery key
1. Save to your Microsoft account
2. Save to a USB flash drive
3. Save to a file
4. Print the recovery key

Option 1 isn't available as I'm logged on using a local account.
i. What is the difference between options 2 & 3? i.e. I could save to a file on a USB drive
ii. Does option 2 mean the USB flash drive cannot then be used for other purposes?
iii. Does option 2 also mean I could use a USB external hard drive, or does it have to be a flash drive?
iv. Once the recovery key has been created, can the key then be copied to other locations or is it only going to work where Bitlocker puts the key?
v. Just thinking about printing the recovery key - can this be used without a password to access the drive, how sensitive/important is the printed key?

N00b questions, I'd very much appreciate your answers.

Thanks

Answer:Bitlocker recovery key

hello and welcome to eight forms , my opinion , difference between 2 and 3 ,2 will create a file and put it on the flash drive for yah,3 you will have to move the file it creates to a flash drive of external drive manually 'I would think you could take the file it create and put it where ever you want , I don't use bitlocker ,if I did I would print it and put away for safe keeping ,like I try to do will all passwords .and if the drive is pass worded that you store the file on ,then yes someone would need the drive password to access the files on that drive, is not that what passwords are for ,I would assume that there are people who could hack your passwords like they do others ,good luck

When I reset Spectre x2, it asks me Bitlocker recovery key. I don't have the key. What can I do?

Answer:Bitlocker recovery key

Hello @pcsl, Welcome back to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post. BitLocker is a Microsoft software designed to protect your PC against offline attacks, unauthorized access typically if your PC gets stolen. BitLocker is full disk encryption software. More info:>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker>> http://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-bitlocker-encryption-windows-10 BitLocker was activated by someone and during the activation time it prompts the user to save/store the key in a safe place. If this is company owned asset/PC, you should turn to your company's IT support guys and they should be able to provide you with the recovery key. If this is your own device, most probably you use a slightly different BitLocker version for certain PCs and tablets known as Device encryption. Probably your key is stored in Microsoft OneDrive with your Microsoft account here :>> https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey More info>> https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/12/microsoft-may-have-your-encryption-key-heres-...>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html Please, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it. Let me know if this works for you ... Answer:Have Bitlocker Recovery ID, need to find Key

Hi,
Could you please explain a bit for the Recovery ID of the BitLocker? Do you mean the first 8 characters of the password? And are we in a domain environment?

If we are in a domain environment, we could use
Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Recovery Password Viewer to find the recovery password through AD server. Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Recovery Password Viewer is an optional feature that's included with the Remote Server Administration Toolkit
(RSAT), which you can install by using the Add Roles and Features
option in the Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 Server Manager or from the
Programs and Features option in Control Panel.
And if we are in a workgroup, and the recovery key is missing, please take a look at the below article for all the possible BitLocker recovery methods:

I have activated Bitlocker on two identical W8.1 pro machines, and on the first (C1) I have the option to use a password when logging into the computer, but the other (C2) only ask for the recovery key from USB stick. Both computers have no TPM, so Bitlocker is enabled without TPM, but this should give the possibility to start the computers using a password on 8.1 pro.

Can I somehow add a password to C2, or is my only option to remove the Bitlocker encryption and try again?

Hello,

I'm curious under what circumstances a recovery key can change and the numerical ID stays the same.  I conducted a test that seems to indicate that the Numerical ID changes if the Recovery Key is changed or if the system is decrypted and re-encrypted.
I can't tell if these are the only conditions under which the Numerical ID would change.
We have a system that we can't get into that the printed backup of the Numerical ID matches what we see on screen but the Recovery Key we have doesn't work.

Hi

I have implemented BitLocker To Go at our company through GPO and recovery keys are backed up into AD DS to the computer object. I am now looking for a way to migrate these recovery keys to an other computer object as we are currently refreshing our workstations.
I have been trying to write a PowerShell script to backup the recovery key into AD when the removable drive is connected and unlocked on the new computer. You can retrieve the ID of the removable drive by the below cmdlet.
manage-bde -protectors F: -get
I am then trying to backup the recovery key using the below cmdlet.
manage-bde -protectors -adbackup F: -id {<id>}
This returns an error.
ERROR: Parameter "-ID" requires an argument.

Any ideas? Does this cmdlet only work for internal disks? Is there a better approach to migrate recovery keys to a new computer?

Thanks!

Hello,
my laptop has freezed, I restart it with power button but now, at start up, BitLocker said that:

You need to enter your recovery key because Secure Boot has been disabled. Either Secure Boot must be re-enabled, or BitLocker must be suspended for Windows to start normally.

I gone to UEFI settings and define a password to re-enabled Secure Boot but BitLocker when I restart comptuer said that Bios secure parameters has changed... It doesn't solve the problem.

The problem is I don't have my recovery key. I tried to recover my recovery key using Microsoft account but I had to update my phone number and so my security settings are locked for one month. My question is :
Is it possible to boot on Ubuntu USB key or plug HDD to an Ubuntu computer, copy files and decrypt them one by one with my password session ?Is it possible to retrieve my recovery key using Windows command line and session password ? (I can access to Windows recovery menu so I have access to commands line.)Is a program to decrypt completely my hard drive exists ? I will write it on a USB key, start it, enter my session password and it will decrypt all the disk or something like that.
Thanks a lot.

Answer:How can I recover my BitLocker recovery key

What do you mean by "session password?"

Assuming you are using a TPM with BitLocker (which is the default) then there is no way to recover your drive without the recovery key. That is the entire point of BitLocker.

Hello everyone,
I am experiencing some issues with my external hard drive. I've decided to encrypt it using bitlocker. We're talking about a 2TB hard drive. The process started..it requested for a password and i have been provided with a recovery key. At around 90% the
process blocked/stoped. It started to affect my PC performace.
Suddenly, there was no longer a progress bar so that i could see how much i had to wait. I've been requested to provide directly my recovery key( not the password) so that i could unlock the drive . I kindda panicked..and reinstalled the OS.
The sad part, altough i have the original message that i got from the drive when i started to encrypt it with the full recovery key, it says its incorrect.
I've performed several test using CMD and all the avaiable commands i could find on the internet, but with no luck.
Have you managed to to get by from such a scenario?

Answer:BitLocker recovery key not working

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't know anything about the BitLocker which is I understand is bundled with Enterprise and Ultimate Editions. Still I was watching this thread to read about this issue as it developed. As there has been no development for 19 hours on this thread, I now feel that there is no solution for retrieving the system.

You may wait a day or two more to see if some suggestions come up but the only way out now seems to be to clean reinstall Windows 7 all over again. I hope you would not lose too much data. I don't think that the locked up files shall be visible with Ubuntu and Hiren's DVDs.

When I enter it it says 'diagnosing' then it gives me options to either 'continue to windows 10' settings' restart' advanced settings' etc.
I have tried them all in turn but nothing works. It accepts my key number and then just says diagnosing and then goes back to the original screen saying 'enter key' again. I have entered the key several times and then chose a different option but non work. How can I get back into my laptop?

I run TPM.msc and select clear TPM. I then have to reboot, F1 to accept clear TPM - enter recovery key again. Log in win7, Prompted to reboot to Enable TPM, reboot, accept TPM enabled prompt, Enter recovery key again then log in to Win7. I thought that would

I found it - You have to enter 2 commands from a comand prompt to repopulate the TPM chip on the new laptop witht he recovery key.

That done the trick.

We are experiencing an interesting issue with some recovery keys not appearing AD due to a change in the recovery key ID.
Some background:
We install Windows 7 via Windows Deployment Services on a local server. In the setup process under the BitLocker options we choose the options of "TPM + PIN", "Store key in Active Directory", and "Wait for encryption to finish before proceeding". Sometimes
after deployment we have to rename the computer. And recovery keys are backed up to a folder on the Windows Deployment Server.
So what happens is, every so often we need to recover a key from AD but when we search for the first 8 characters of the Recovery Key ID, we cant find anything. However we have found that going back and pulling the key from the backup folder on the WDS server
will have a different recovery key ID, but the 48 digit recovery key will still unlock the drive.
Where we are stumped is why the Recovery Key ID changes between deployment and actual use.
We understand that Recovery Key IDs can be changed via script however that is not being done here.
Also this does not happen on every Win7 computer we deploy just some sporadically. But gives a real scare when we suddenly cant unlock a users computer from the AD key store.
We thought it might have been related to when the computer sometimes gets renamed after deployment, however the issue occurs on computers that have not been renamed since deployment.
So with that, I ask if an... Read more

Hello,
I am looking for some assistance with Bitlocker and it's recovery mode triggering for strange reasons. I am new to using Bitlocker, and we are deploying it with Windows 7 Enterprise on the Dell Latitude E5470, with TPM 1.2.

Everything works great most of the time, but we have several instances where the battery dying or removing a laptop from a docking station, will trigger the Bitlocker recovery mode, and the only way to clear it is disabling/re-enabling Bitlocker entirely
(decrypt/re-encrypt) or removing either the RAM or CMOS battery, and performing a hardware reset.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I've been looking on the worlds greatest text book and am unable to find a solution. I'm using a retail version of Windows 8 Pro and am creating my on refresh images. I can perform a refresh just fine through the PC settings however after bit locker encryption I cannot use the refresh feature; in setting bit locker, it says "You will no longer be able to use Windows Recovery Environment unless it is manually enabled and moved to the system drive".

The Problem: I cannot find on the internet how to manually enable or move a Windows Recovery Environment so that I can use the refresh feature with bit locker encryption.

When I was using the manufacture upgraded OEM I was able to use the refresh feature with bit locker encryption, but not the retail version. I don't want to use a USB thumb-drive to house the recovery environment, I just want it on the hard-drive.

I found the convenience of using the refresh feature over image backup is that it wouldn't format the drive to restore the image, thus loosing the encryption. the refresh feature maintains encryption.

your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
Bitlocker is controlled by domain policies. First time Bitlocker is enabled on a computer, the recovery is saved to AD DS. I confirmed this in Computers object in AD DS.
However, when the user changes the PIN, there is no record of the new recovery key. Is that normal?

When I then manually force the recovery to AD by using manage-bde -protectors -adbackup C: -id { recoveryGUID }, a new entry appears in the computer object in the AD. Although that seems correct, when I tested it, this new recovery key is not valid. Bitlocker
on startup refers to the initial recoveryID instead of the new one created after the PIN change.

Is is correct that a PIN change does not result in a new recovery key? If not, which policies should I adjust in order to fix this.

Hope my post is sufficiently clear. Many thanks in advance.

Howdy, all!
Has anyone had any issues with getting BitLocker working without prompting for recovery within Win10 on this model? We purchased several 5480s and 7480s, and both models initially experienced issues where BitLocker would successfully enable and encrypt, but would prompt for the BitLocker Recovery Key at every boot. I was eventually able to get the 5480 models working by using the in-the-field downgrade to TPM 1.2, along with the 1.3.2 BIOS update, which specifically addresses "Win7" (i.e. TPM 1.2) BitLocker problems.
Try as I might, I can't find any combination of things that work with the 7480. Our imaging and boot sequence currently requires enabling Legacy ROMs in BIOS, and while we have plans to enetually move towards a straight UEFI boot sequence, it's going to require a pretty significant procedural change that we are NOT poised for right now. I noticed that there is not yet a 1.3.x BIOS revision available for the 7480, and that was the final piece of the puzzle eventually did the trick on the 5480 model. Does the 7480 suffer from the same problem, and is still pending a firmware fix? Or am I battling another problem altogether with the 7480 series?
Any information the community can provide will be helpful!
Thanks!

Hi,

is there a way to encrypt a BitLocker drive without generating a recovery key?

Other encryption tools such as DiskCryptor/VeraCrypt/TrueCrypt or those found on Linux can simply be used with one PIN, no recovery key required.

BitLocker also allows to encrypt using a PIN. But, even when using a PIN, it still always seems to require to generate a recovery key in addition.

Is it possible to disable recovery keys altogether? So that only a PIN is set up to encrypt the drive and nothing else?

Why would you want a recovery key anyway, when you are already using a PIN? Why would you want to generate two passwords (PIN + recovery key) instead of just one password (only PIN without any recovery key)?

Answer:[BitLocker] Encrypting without generating recovery key?

BitLocker Drive Encryption Operations Guide: Recovering Encrypted Volumes with AD DS describes what the recovery key is used for

If you don't anticipate any of those scenarios happening to you then just destroy any copies of the recovery key - it's not like someone is going to brute-force a 128-bit key.

Ok here is the deal. I had a new laptop that dual booted vista and linux. the vista partitioned was encrypted with bitlocker. I decide to give windows 7 a try so I repartition the drive in to one large volume, format and install windows 7. Everything worked perfectly. The problem is after about a week I realize there was some important files on the vista partition before I wiped everything out. I have found several data recovery programs the can recover files after a format, however they only show files that where on the linux partition. My guess is that the bitlocker encryption is preventing these tools from finding any of the vista files.

So the question is, Does anyone know of a application or company that can recover files from a bitlocker'ed drive after it has been formatted.

UNLOCK THIS DRIVE USING YOUR RECOVERY KEY ... (I AM DONT HAVE THE RECOVERY KEY) PLEASE HELP ME .......

Answer:bitlocker drive encryption recovery

If you do not have the password that bitlocker was set up with, then you are out of luck. The whole point of drive encryption is so that you cannot decrypt the data with out the key.

All,

I recently worked through the Symantec Ghost process to create a repair partition. It works well except I only wish one could control acccess to is as a boot option rather than it being available to end-users.

My question is one of those is it possible questions. Has anyone combined the standard Bitlocker partition with the WinPE UFD partition needed to enable the F3 restore from the Symantec Ghost partition. If so, how can I accomplish this?

Would partitioning the hard drive and applying the UFD image to the second partition before installing Vista be all that needs to be done? Or will the bitlocker wipe out something important in the MBR when it is enabled.

Why, I have several systems dedicated to short term use where the image is static and Bitlocker is needed. If I can use F3 to reimage them rather than Ghostcast then it can be done anywhere the system is in the world. Otherwise it has to be done on a local subnet and it incurs more overhead in technician time and network resources.
