Computer turns on but nothing is Displayed (Black Screen)

Question: Computer turns on but nothing is Displayed (Black Screen)

This computer has been working since 2013, and just lately have I have been having issues. When turning on the computer, the computer sounds perfectly fine, all fans and everything works. There is no damaged, or burnt anything inside the computer. When turning on the computer my keyboard & mouse do not turn on, and the computer light works and doesn't work. I have tried everything that I can think of and anything that I have researched on the HP guides. And my computer still does not work. I have tried changing monitor, and the cables that connect to these monitors. I have bought a new PowerSupply and that made it work but once I had to restart it it did not turn back on (nothing pops onto the screen, it is black) I have a GTX Geforce 750ti FTW graphics card and nothing is damaged or misplaced. All connectors and connecitons work properly. I have reset the computer several times and it still does not work. Just now when turning on the computer the light (the botton) does not turn on, but the computer does indeed turn on. I don't understand that if there was something seriously wrong with the computer why it would sometimes work and sometimes not? If the motherboard was bad it wouldn't be working period, let alone working. I really need some help, thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, having a few problems with my PC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A few weeks ago I came into the office to find my PC was making a strange "static" type of noise out of the speakers. The computer failed to power up, so ordered a new motherboard.

Fitted the motherboad today and put in a larger PSU. It powers up but nothing is displayed on my screen. Have tried a PCI Express graphics card and an old PCI graphics card but neither seem to output anything to the screen.

The PCI Express graphics card was working fine in the computer before it broke.

Another possible problem would be the CPU rather than the graphics card. I have tried 3 different processors (the one that was in the previous motherboard and two others) but using a different processor doesn't do anything.

Would it be right to assume that this must be a graphics card problem?

Could it be something else entirely?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is starting to frustrate me,
Thanks,
Michael

Hi, at first I thought this might be virus related. I went through with help from Howard_Hopkinso, and removed all virus' and malware. But my problem persists.

I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700, 120 Gig HD, 3 Gig memory, 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT duo processor. NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra.

What happens is when i try and playing a source game for little while the screen goes black, sound skips, but the laptop still runs. Also happens when i click on certain internet links.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

I am lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Screen Turns Black, but computer still on

Try doing a system restore... If this doesn't work, you will have to wipe the laptop's hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows

Ok so, im trying to help my friend with her broken computer.
She got hit with the avsoft virus, It took me a while but I finally got malwarebytes on her system, and had to rename the .exe in order to get it to run in safemode and it seemed to have worked pretty well, i then wanted to boot it in normal mode and run a full scan to make sure we got everything.
Anyway, we were experimenting with it for whatever reason (i guess malware removal had us feeling brave) and we unhooked her monitor, and plugged her desktop computer via the monitor cord into my laptop. i know that you can plug a monitor into a laptop and use that instead of the laptop screen, so we wanted to see if it would work with the desktop instead of the monitor. You know, like use my laptop as the monitor and keyboard.
I went into the my laptops nvidia control panel and messed around with some of the settings
All of a sudden my laptop screen went black.
I just rebooted, and my laptop was fine but when we plugged her monitor back into her desktop and rebooted it would not reboot correctly.

The lights on the computer would turn on, you can hear it is running, the fans are running, it makes one beep, just like a normal startup. the screen displays a logo (not the windows logo) an everex logo for a few seconds, and then some text comes up (like normally) and looks like it proceeds to load but it flies by so quick you cant read it, and then nothing. A big black blank screen.

Some things I have already tried:

Answer:Computer turns on, but black screen :(

Inverters and bad backlights can be hard to diagnose without just replacing the parts but it sounds as one or the other is out/going out.
If you check these out yourself, good luck. Laptops are a bear and unless you've done a few, a repair shop may be best.
Good luck.

Hello. I've come to hopefully find a solution to a boot up problem I'm having with my computer. There are several factors that I'm honestly not sure will play a role or not, mainly because I'm not very understanding when it comes to computers.

The problem is that when I push the power button of my computer, it sends no signal to my screen. I can't tell if it loads anything or not either. I can think of a few things that might have some effect on this, but I'm not sure.

About three months back after cleaning my neglected tower of dust and such, it started to shut off rapidly after boot up. To inspect the problem, I had a friend look at the computer. He removed the cooling unit on the Processor revealing that my 8year old computer had next to no thermal compound. So after putting of ordering some for about three months, we had applied some about 2 days ago. The computer then booted up fine, but seemed to have an excess amount of lag. So I wiped the computer and reinstalled XP tonight. When it was booted up, it worked fine, so I went into IE to download firefox as it's my preference, then started reinstalling my drivers. First I installed my Videocard, then kept my computer booted up for my sound drivers which I got from the Compaq homesite. After doing this, I rebooted my computer. Not I wanted to get simple things such as AIM and and Java. So when i go to boot up Firefox from it's default homepage, my computer shuts down. when I go to reboot it, it doesn't start and I'm ... Ok, so after further testing, hooking my monitor to my onboard video card gets no results either. I've tried removing my memory sticks one by one, also leading to no results. I've tried a different power supply as well, giving nothing new.

A friend asked me to look at her Toshiba Satellite L455 Laptop. Apparently her dog chewed the power cord while her daughter was playing on it. The computer shut down. I replaced the motherboard thinking that was it and that didnt help. I replaced the screen inverter and the backlight and neither of them worked. The computer does turn on but the screen is black.. What could be the problem? If I replace the screen would that work?

Got the computer from a family member, I tried fixing it for them first and I thought it was the video card so I tried a different one and still nothing. So it was unplugged and stored for months then they just gave it to me. Well I took it home and started messing with it turned it on a cple of times nothing. Moved wires around put different psu in nothing, put it back to normal it started right up powered screen up I got into windows but it had a lot of lag so I went to restart it so I could do a fresh install and screen shut off... note when it wasn't working before this point the cpu fan ran at full rpm when turned on but slowed down when it worked this first time. I turned it on and off cple times nothing unplugged psuand back in it worked enough to reinstall windows and went to restart nothing. When plugged my speakers in to see if it beeps it started up! Its toying with me, restarted it again nothing so next try I pushed on the cpu thinking the mobo was bad it started up and woked for a cple restarts and quit... I tightened. The mobo screws down to the case and worked for awhile and then started acting up on restart. It will turn on once after it sits awhile unplugged with the bios battery out. I'm confused... bad bios or the mobo? I have unplugged all things that aren't needed for start up different hd with same effect. Only thing I haven't tried yet is the ram. I'm at work and will mess with it more later. Its a compaq presario or w.e amd 3800+ 2.4 ght proc two 512m... Read more

Answer:computer turns on but screen stays black

The PSU was probably bad, replacing it should have fixed it. There may be bad caps on the motherboard or something is grounding on the MOBO to the case and causing it to not boot. Take everything apart. Take Heat Sync off of processor and apply Thermal Paste. Take MOBO out of case and check to see if there are any burn marks, bad caps, or if there are any risers missing off the case keeping the MOBO from touching the case.

I've checked to see that the hard drive is spinning and it is. the hdd access light flashes.i have not checked the ram yes since it's a laptop and difficult to get to. but i'm pretty sure that's not the issue. since from what i've listened to it sounds like it goes through post then sits the fro about thirty seconds probly asking if i want to start windows in safe mode normal. when i just sit there after about that much time has past the cpu fans start going again a little faster and i can here that it's accessing the hard drive but since i can' see anything it's hard to tell if that's true. i'm thinking that it's a bad graphics card but i'm not sure.

Answer:Solved: Black screen when computer turns on

ok so the problem is that sometimes you can see the picture and sometimes you can't see it. i don't know what causes that but that's what happens. i got it working again. but after it went to sleep the screen never came back on. would that mean that there is something wrong with one of the windows files? i know one of them is the one used to bring the computer back from sleep mode. it's running windows vista. maybe this isn't a hardware issue?

Hello all

Just got myself this (old) new computer, that I was going to use for a media center. But it randomly crashes, and i can't seem to figure out why. I formated it yesterday, so I doubt it would be a virus.

Sometimes it goes black, and picture returns within a few seconds, but other times it freezes up completely. When I restart it (with the power button) I cant get pasted the BIOS screen, but if I unplug the power supply, and hit the power button a few times and then plug in the power, it starts up like normal. (does that make it a RAM issue?)

Freezes have happened doing the following: Using XBMC (both in menus and while watching a video), while Internet Download Manager was running. While file transfer was running, and a few times while i wasnt at the computer.

Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
ATI Radeon HD 5670
Intel Core i3 CPU
6GB RAM
Phillips TV (Connected with HDMI)

Let me know if you need any other information.
Thanks

The problems you describe typically mean hardware problems. Please follow the http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html to provide us with your system logs and application logs. Those can help to find software conflicts, system errors, application errors, and sometimes point to hardware problems, as well. Hi all,

My faithful desktop of 2 years has started pushing up daisies:
I was playing GTA5 when the monitor lost connection to the computer and I had to restart. When I started back up, the message that appears after a bluescreen popped up. This started happening more and more frequently, whenever I started any game, then sometimes when I'd just have Firefox open, then about half the time I tried to start up the computer it'd happen at the login screen.

I did a Malwarebytes scan a few days before this started happening and it turned up clean, and I haven't changed the hardware in 2 years. I tried updating my video card drivers, to no avail.

The weird thing is how inconistent it is--I was able to play GTA for several hours last night, then it happened again. Sometimes it automatically restarts, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the power light flashes. Sometimes it makes me go through Startup Repair (which never finds anything).

I have no idea what could be causing this. BlueScreenView says it's a graphics driver about half the time, but not all the time. Memtest86 said the RAM was fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I can post SysInfo results and the minidump files if they'd help; I'm on my laptop right now because the system in question is really unreliable.

Thanks in advance.

More than likely a faulty graphics chip, the mobile Nvidia 8/9 series which you have are notorious for this especially in laptops with less than perfect cooling which allows them to get very hot.My advice would be firstly to clean the heatsink and fan thoroughly, secondly try a fresh install of Windows with the latest Nvidia drivers.  Trying to troubleshoot an installation that has had a lot of random tweaks and settings applied by a dubious program isn't going to go far.  If you still have the same problem with a fresh install, it's likely the graphics chip is toast.

Hello! I recently dropped my desktop (I'm soo clumsy) on the floor. It's a dell vostro 400 with 4gb ram, intel 2 duo core, and nvidia 8600GT. I know it's not a power issue. The first time i turned it on after the accident, it beeped continously. Everytime i turned it on, all of the fans start up, my monitor recieves a signal from my graphic card but goes to power save mode, and it doesn't load the bios or the start up screen... what ever it's called. Any way of fixxing this or is it dead? I think it's the motherboard that's as far as i can tell.

EDIT: the graphics card works properly. It fell while it was on; I had to hold the power button to turn it off since it froze.

Answer:Dropped computer turns on, but black screen occurs

You moved and dropped the computer while it was on??? Not good. Open the case WITH THE COMPUTER UNPLUGGED and reseat the memory, and the graphics card. Check the CPU heatsink/ fan to make sure it is still tight and positioned properly. Also, check for any loose cables

I've been having an issue with my computer for a week or two now. Figure I'll explain the symptoms first.

First off, it takes a long time for anything to load. This includes when I first start the computer, opening a program, switching between windows, and shutting down the computer.

It also seems to be slow on updating the screen; for example, even now as I type sometimes the screen will freeze. I will continue typing until I realize this, then I have to rapidly click on the firefox button in the taskbar to make the entire monitor blink black a number of times before the firefox window opens again and shows what I had been typing.

The computer also likes to blink to a black screen like that on its own; the black screen only lasts a second or less, and sometimes it will happen once or a few times in succession.

Programs also like to lag; Word for example is impossible to work with; parts of the program will become invisible (showing my wallpaper underneath) or the program will just freeze if, for example, I open the drop-down menu for changing font size.

Even saving an image from the internet usually results in the monitor freezing; though I can usually still move my mouse, click on where the save button would be, and after the screen blinks again it shows that the image did save correctly. The pointer also freezes sometimes as well, though this isn't as often.

I've tried to do a system restore, but all my attempts result in the program saying the r... Read more

Hi TRM01 and welcome to TSF

I'm assuming you are using a desktop computer. Unplug all external devices except the keyboard, display, and mouse. Boot and check results.

Boot in the Safe Mode and see it the problem persists. Normally tap on F8 at early boot to get the Advanced boot menu. Might be F12. Check results.

Try the task manager long enough to turn some things off. Many things will not turn off, but many will. Watch the CPU usage at the bottom each time to see if you have found an application that is eating up your cpu time. It should normally be very low if you haven't started any applications.
Turn off explorer. Your icons will go away. Restart explorer using the new task under the file tab. Type in explorer to get it back. Any difference? Note that everything you disable will be reloaded next boot.

If you find a task that is causing the problem, you might be able to disable it in msconfig under the start tab using the check boxes. Start>Run> type in msconfig then enter. If you would like to find out what each item does, follow this link:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

If you have some items that you never use, uninstall them, especially if they load something into memory during boot.

Make sure you are using only one Virus Protection program and one Malware program. If more that one is loaded, they sometimes fight each other and slow down your computer.

Open your task manager and see if you have any yel... Read more

I'm trying to figure out my friends PC issue so I'm going to do some tests but I figured I'd post and see if anyone had any input on what it might be, I believe it could be faulty hardware but I'm gonna try to figure out what possibly..

- Computer is new, about 1 month old
-Windows 7
-If left idle and turned back on, it can stay on for about 15 - 30 minutes until the screen goes black and needs to be shut down again, goes into this screen
-Computer was running and had music playing, screen went black again and music was still playing in the background. So it's a display issue, but the monitor is fine working on another computer
-Says makes like an electrical noise before the screen goes black, mouse won't move

Intel core i5 3570k, Asus gtx 770, 8 gb of ram, 1TB HDD, 650W Psu,
I dont think its because of overheating, because when i look up the temperatures the max on my gpu is 75? on full load what is fine for the 770, and my cpu is on full load at about 54? max.
So could it be a software problem or my HDD is not working properly.
If anyone could reply i would be thankful.
Thank you!

Answer:While playing video games my computer screen turns black or blank

The fans and lights turn on but there is no beep code and nothing is displayed on any of the screens I've tried, all tested with other computers. I've replaced the power supply and re-seated everything at least twice. Does anybody have any Idea what it could be?
I've checked the cpu for scorch marks, nothing.
I've reset the bios and tried a different graphics card.

Also a few weeks before it died it began randomly cutting out, the screen would go random colours for an instant and it would power off.

Answer:Computer turns on but nothing is displayed

First of all, post the exact specs on the system on which you are working ie exact mb, exact pw supply, exact video card, etc, etc. If this is a big box system ie dell, hp, whatever, then post the make and model #.

Have you tried the following?
1 Disconnect any usb device ie printer, scanner, hub, etc
2 Pull out any add-in cards like sound, nic, etc. Leave your video card installed [if using real video card]
3 System OFF, pull the pw connectors from ALL drives both hd and optical
4 You have reseated parts so we can skip that step. With system OFF, clear cmos with the jumper. Replace to the keep position.
5 Now pw ON and see if the system will post. If it does post, then shutdown and connect/install devices one at a time until you find the failed part. If it does not post, then you are going to have to swap parts with known good units; ie cpu, mb, ram, and pw supply.

FWIW from your post I would put my money on a failed mb however you cannot tell until you test.

Hi,
I'm having trouble with two of my desktops.
Desktop #1 Problem:
When all cords and such are plugged in, I press the power button. The desktop turns on for about 1-2 seconds and then restarts. The bios doesn't flash, the os doesn't boot. As far as I can tell the desktop restarts indefinitely. Any ideas what's going on here?
--Desktop Type: HP Pavilion a705W
I found someone with a similar problem here

Desktop #2 Problem:
I bought some 3M Dust Remover a few days ago. I disconnected power, along with everything else, from a desktop of mine. Pulled the cover off and started blowing the dust out of the case. I put everything back together, plugged it in, and the desktop doesn't work. It boots to a blank screen with the the power and hard drive led's stuck on, on the front of the desktop. The led on the back of the power supply turns on, I can hear the hard drive spin up, it detects the cd/dvd drives, floppy drive and then just hangs with the led's stuck on. Anyone have an idea what might be going on here?
--Desktop Type: Compaq Presario S4200NX

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping to get atleast one of these back online w/o buying a whole new desktop.

Answer:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

Hi….

Desktop 1:

Do you see anything on your screen at all while this is happening?

Have you tried to press the setup key to see if the BIOS will come up and make changes?

Do you have any USB devices (other than keyboard or mouse) hooked up? If so, try disconnecting them and see if it will at least POST or attempt to go into the OS.

WARNING: Before checking the capacitors, disconnect the power cord on your system and press & hold the POWER button to allow the power to discharge! Also, you should always ground yourself before touching computer components to prevent static discharge!

Just FYI, some of the motherboards in this series of HP’s have issues with the capacitors.

You should take a look at the capacitors to see if the tops of them are raised or discolored. Also, if you put your finger on the top of the capacitors, they should feel as if they are INDENTED and not flush or raised. Raising or discoloration (up to and including a black tar looking substance on the tops indicate a leaking capacitor).

Desktop 2:

Any POST sounds (beeps) produced at all?

Have you tried the monitor from Desktop 1 on this one?

Anything at all displayed on the monitor, to include CHECK CABLE message?

Recommendation: Open the case again and ensure that all the cards, memory, drive cables and so forth are all connect properly and not loose or dislodged.

Do you know how to RESET your BIOS to default using the onboard jumpers?

Answer:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

For system #1 the problem could be from one of several like a weak battery on the board itself not maintaining cmos information or even worse "bad caps" or a failing bios eprom chip for just two there. Bad caps being bad capacitors on the board like one or more leaking or bulged out. Look for any discoloration on the board itself.

For system #2 you may have accidently blasted with too much force against the video card seeing that now raised up in the slot. Any high power dust blower is never recommended for use inside any system. This is why there are cans of compressed air called air cleaners that gently blow dust and debris out of a case.

Thanks for writing to us.
When did the issue start? Have you made any hardware or software changes.
Does it beeps in a sequence. If possible please send us an audio file of the beeps sequence,as per that we can make out what is causing the trouble.
Meanwhile you can try the following steps
Disconnect the power sources , hold down the power button for 15 sec, then put back the power sources, power up the machine and observe if any changes.
Also if possible remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for changes.
Please go through this link for instructions on memory module removal

Answer:laptop screen goes black when i restart, and screen wont wake up after it turns off

Boot the computer and press F8 in the Advanced Boot menu choose Last Known Good Configuration.
What is the make and model# of the computer? Go to the manufactures support/download drivers site and download the Chipset and the Video driver for the computer.
Go to Start/Search and type powercfg.cpl. Right click the powercfg results and Run As Administrator. Click Change Plan Settings/change Advanced power settings. Reset your power settings to your liking.

Hello,

I am encountering an issue of when the Dell optiplex 755 boots up, it boots through the Windows XP logo just fine, once it tries to transition between the logo and loading the system up, it just shows a black screen and nothing else happens. I tried using a bootable Windows XP flash drive to repair the system files and it loads the Windows XP setup ok but when it runs through all of the commands on the bottom of the screen and the last one says "Starting Windows" , it takes me to a blue screen (screenshot below). I have HIRENS and have done a lot of the chkdsk commands to fix the files and everything comes back ok. I tried to clone the hard drive with the same exact hard drive and still the same issue. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

I have a Dell Inspiron and it seems that they are the worst that have the problems. It is a vista and a year and a half old. Before it died/crashed it would turn black. In the light i could still see the programs running and it just faded the screen. I tried setting the hibernation to never and turning off screen to never but it still fades to that same blackness. I cant even see properly through it and i cant do anything to turn it back to it was before.

I rebooted it to the factory edition but it still does the same thing. Please help!

Question: Screen turns black

Hello, I really need help with a problem I've been having at random. This has happened 5 times (and counting) and they were all at times I was of course away from my computer. The screen goes black and my keyboard and mouse doesn't light up anymore. My computer is still on but I can hear my CPU fan racing every time this happens.

I don't know exactly why this happens other than a possible graphic driver error but I am updated to the latest. I check my event log and this is the only error that I see happening each time this happens:

Faulting application name: csrss.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bc115
Faulting module name: sxs.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7c9cc
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000011b2f
Faulting process id: 0x36c
Faulting application start time: 0x01d07ee0e62ef7e4
Faulting application path: C:\Windows\system32\csrss.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\sxs.dll
Report Id: 0d00ead7-eae8-11e4-92da-005056c00008

I read online sxs.dll belongs to Microsoft for something called Fusion? Do I need this on my computer or is the problem something more than this. If someone can please help me with this I would be happy and If you need any logs I will try to post them ASAP. Thanks

I know this might sound silly, but were you running off the battery and now maybe the battery is running low, if this is the case the screen will become black after the battery gets too low.

Answer:Turns on but black screen

Is this an all-in-one computer? (The computer is behind the monitor.)
If so, it has a video chip rather than a replaceable graphics card.

Alright, today I hibernated my computer (I usually hibernate) left it for an hour and attempted to turn it back on, now it loads fine but once it gets to the point where it should display the vista logo and then the log in screen the screen goes blank. The hard disk light is blinking fast so fast it's almost just staying on and the wireless does its blinking patterns as if it's redying the wireless connection but the screen remains black. I've tried safe mode, same result. Two screens, same result. I booted Ubuntu and it was fine so I'm using that now.

First of all, any insight into how I should go about fixing this?
If not, I have extremely important files on the hard drive is there any way you could recommend getting them back?

Thanks for any help, I'd hate to have to take it in and risk the guys at the store deciding it's easier just to wipe the hard drive or something.

Answer:Screen turns black before reaching the login screen

Are you using a Ubuntu Live CD, or are you dual booting?
If you're dual booting, you can access your ntfs partition from Ubuntu using steps listed on many many web sites: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...earch&aq=f&oq=
Some are easier than others.

As for fixing your Vista. I have reservations because in some of my steps Vista has this nasty habit of overwriting the master boot record with its own without warning you (making you unable to boot into ubuntu if you dual boot), so research some more, and proceed with caution. If you boot into the Vista DVD, I think you can click repair, and you have a bunch of options and it looks like this:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/download/at...eryOptions.png
I haven't tried them in a while so I can't really recall what each does.
You can try going back using a restore point. Be VERY cautious with "Startup Repair". I think that's the one that rewrites the master boot record. (if you really need to try it, research how you can backup the master boot record in ubuntu, then restore it if needed - usually a flash drive, a floppy, or a bootable CD may be needed - you most likely would be able to do it from the live cd if you know the steps though).
And if all else fails, do a repair install. Can't recall how it's done, but there are many sites dedicated to that topic. You can also ask around the forum about it.

My computer screen randomly shuts off as I am using the computer. This is NOT at boot up. When I turn it back on there is just a black screen with my white cursor. I have to reboot sometimes to make it go away and the problem is solved until it happens again. Scanned with Anti-malewarebtes, SUPERAntiSpyware, RootRepeal, avg pro, microsoft online scanner Used CCleaner. All came back with absolutely nothing, clean bill of health. I've been running these constantly over the past week in hope something will show. Computer slows down right before the computer screen goes black again. First started happening last week.

Possible driver problem? The computer is slow though so it still makes me wonder if it is a virus of some nasty sort. There is plenty of disk space free on my computer and the vents are cleared so I don't think over heating is a problem. The inside looks fine but I am up for any more suggestions, I have been suggested that a capacitor may have blown but they are in top shape.

This is happening as I am actively using the computer. This is not happening on reboot. The screen shuts off, the computer stays on and I turn the screen back on to find a black screen with only my white cursor visible that I can move around. I must reboot to get rid of the issue and it is gone, my computer is fine, but then my computer becomes slow for a while and it happens again a few hours later.

Hi, I have a Lenovo x240 with Windows 7 professional. I am very happy with it except that, around 30% of the time when it wakes up from a sleep or a hibernate, about a fifth of the screen on the right turns black. To turn it back on, I have to do Function F7 to put  the output to duplicate or extend, where the entire screen is normal again, and then put it back to "computer only" to restore the resolution. That resolves the issue of the black screen, but it becomes annoying over time. I have installed the latest Lenovo graphics driver updates. That seemed to improve the situation, because before installing the updates, it happened around 50% of the time. I have also tested if the screen is responsive when it is black. It is responsive during this state, and it seems to be a display problem, and not a hardware problem. Has anyone encountered this issue?

Answer:part of the screen turns black

I am using Windows 8 on my laptop. If I connect my laptop to a video projector and left it idle for about 4 minutes, the screen turns black. So I am trying to avoid this. Here is what I did so far. First I found that for Windows 8, the option of presentation setting is not available in Control panel -> Windows Mobility Center (Fig. 1).

Next I looked for the screen saver and found that I have not activated it at all. Also the (Fig. 2)

Next I tried to Change the power setting by going to Control panel -> Change power setting -> Change when to turn off the display and set all of the as Never (Fig. 3)

I still got the black screen after doing these. Finally I noticed that after I left my laptop idle for about 4 minutes, it says "maintenance is in progress" in the "Action center". After searching through web, I found that an easy way to stop this maintenance during my presentation. I disconnected from the wireless internet temporary when giving a presentation. I tested this and after disconnecting from internet there will be no "maintenance is in progress".

However, the screen still turns black during presentation, even after disconnecting from the internet. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,First of all, I do not have an antivirus software installed in my computer, that is why I am pretty sure there is something wrong going in my laptop. I am working with windows xp Service Pack 2. Here is the problem; my laptop sometimes Shuts down without asking. Not in the sense that it shows you the shutdown window. No! I just see suddenly my laptop out of electricity and the screen turns to dark! I have a Malwarebyte's'Anti-Malware installed in my pc and it has twice gave me a trojan a alert. But, I do not remeber the name of the trojan because it is not appearing anymore. Another thing is when I try to visit antvirus websites, most of them do not open for me! I do not know if the virus or the trojan is that smart to know that! My internet conncetion usually gets slow. I am feeling really frustrated because when I am in the middle of something important, the secreen suddenly turns to black. Also, when I want to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete, I get the following error message; Task Manage has been disabled by your administrator. Any help would be appreciated. Hello all,

This is my first post here, so please excuse me if I have created this thread in the wrong place. For quite some time (perhaps about two-three months) my screen has been flickering and turning black at random times. Sometimes my screen will be fine for a few days in a row, and then it might flicker for a few minutes and eventually just turn black. Usually what I do is turn it off and on a few times and eventually it returns normal. The thing is, I know it is still turned on because my music player will still operate, and it is a lighter shade of black, meaning I can still faintly see what was on my screen. Further, I initially thought it was an issue related to my charger being wrecked, but I have since replaced this and the problem persists. My guess is that it is some sort of virus, which I am basing on my quick reading of some other websites where others have reported similar problems. I'm really not a tech whiz, so does anyone have any suggestions?

Any input will be highly appreciated.

Answer:Screen flickers and turns black

I'm not very well versed in this area, but it does sound like a case of a faulty monitor since your programs run as per normal during those flickers.. You might wish to post more details on your specs and age of your hardware.
Have you tried replacing the monitor for testing?

Hey Tech Support Guy's users,

Yesterday, I got back to my house, and went on the computer for a short while, then while looking on the internet, my Inspiron 1525's screen died on me. Not only my main screen, but also my other monitors as well, saying there was no signal. I was assuming that it is a dying Video Card, but I wanted to have more insight regarding my question. Is my fear correct, or it is the drivers? I haven't updated my drivers since 4 months ago, so I doubt it is my drivers.

Any who, if you need more information from me, please ask away and I will respond as quickly as possible.

-Tempbid

P.s. I wasn't do sure if I was suppose to put it on Hardware or Window 7 section. Felt like, it could be a window 7 error.

At any random time I'm on my computer, the monitor screen will fade to a dark shade, then just go pitch black, while it's still on. If you turn the monitor off and back on it will stay normal for maybe a second before it goes pitch black again. The only way i can keep it from going black screen is by slapping the back of my monitor and it goes back to normal for awhile.

Hello everyone, get ready to have a little bit of reading!

So my problem is actually that my screen (both my screens cuz I got 2) turns black randomly. I am in a CS GO game or playing Eve online and my screens just "stop working". I can close and re-open my main screen and it says "no signal". BUT the computer is still working fine, I was on Discord with friends and they were telling me where to go...didint work out pretty well, but that said, it looks like my GPU crash or something?

Happened twice in 30 min and now it just happened once...
I had another problem 1-2 months ago, well I had that problem for about 6 month or so. Randomly my computer was freezing, image freeze, sound freeze, ALL freeze. (used to happen like 1-2 times a month) Now it seems that it wont freeze (I am gaming less I suppose). But I got this new problem or black screen.

Oh and at the same time I am writing this, I was trying to update my GPU drivers, and it popped an error and close the Nvidia menu...
Well actually I think it might be my GPU that is about to die, but how can I test it? How can I be sure it's the GPU? It could be the power supply getting old and not giving enough power? It could be the motherBoard...maybe?

Here is my build :

System : Windows 7 Professionnel ?(X64)? Service Pack 1

motherBoard : ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. P8H77-V LE Rev X.0x

Hi guys,

Basically as the title suggests, when I turn on my PC it powers up, I hear fans spinning yet my screen will stay black. To add to this when it stays blank my keyboard also does not light up.

So far the only way for me to access my PC is to turn it off and on a few times, usually including completely disconnecting it from the power for a short while.

PC Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)
AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor
GeForce GTX 760
8.00 GB RAM
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 EPS12V 610W Power Supply

Rocca ISKU Illuminated Gaming Keyboard
Rocca XTD Gaming Mouse
(First time having a gaming mouse/keyboard so I was not sure if maybe they caused problems, sucked extra power etc..)

I'm not too experienced with the ins and outs of computers but all I can think is maybe my PSU is not giving enough power (though I get no warning beeps), my Keyboard might be the issue? I hope you guys can help. I've thought, maybe do I need to update the BIOS? If so how do I do that?

Answer:PC Turns on BUT my screen is still black/blank?

Is this a new build that will not post or has it been running then developed a problem?

Have you tried disconnecting ALL drives [both hd and optical] removing any usb device ie printer, scanner, hub, etc and then pw ON? See if the mb will reliably complete POST. If it does complete post a few times, then start connecting devices one at a time until you find the failed part. If it does not complete POST in the above config, then you will need to start swapping parts with known good units; start with the pw supply.

Next post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb installed, exact ram installed, etc. Note 8gig of ram does not really tell us much; 8gig of corsair 123xxx, tells us a lot more.

If you can get the system to post, enter the bios or uefi and post the following info; cpu temp, system temp, 12V, 5V, and 3.3V values.

Oftentimes when I turn my laptop on, the machine turns on but the display is blank/black. Drive light blinks and the power button is lit but the screen shows no sign of function. It also does this when I close my laptop and it goes into sleep. Tried hard reset a hundred times, and sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. Sometimes prepairing automatic repair shows up, and when I choose go to home menu, it turns black again. I've also tried choosing the restart selection, and the same happens. I have also updated the graphics card and to the latest Windows 10 update and it seems to have made no difference. I've tried so many things but nothing is making a lasting change. Please help!

Hi guys.

I have installed windows xp many many times and this is the first time its happned. So when i try to install, it seems fine in the beginning. Formatting, Installing some files, then it goes to the part where it prepares the installation and it says something like 39 minutes left. Its still fine there, buh when it goes down to around 34 minutes. My screen turns black and it just dies there. I tried turning on and off my monitor, no luck. Cap lock and Num Lock arent working at all. Fan stops and disc stops spinning.

These are the things i have tried:
1. Tried re-installing, re-formatting many many times
2. Low-level format my hard drive
3. checked my hard drive many times
4. Resetted my BIOS

Please if anyone out there has had the same problem and knows how to solve it. Please help me. Thank you very much.

System -
AMD Sempron 3300+
512MB
ATI Radeon se 9600 series
160 GB HD

sorry i dunno the exact brand and info on my system, i kant check right now anyway... cuz i dun even hav an OS. so.. please help.

p.s. I've also tried removing all USB all i left there were my Keyboard / mouse (NOT USB) and monitor.

Answer:screen turns black during XP Installation

Try taking out your graphics card, if your xp disc is SP1 try SP2.
The 34 minutes is the installing devices section.
Its the graphics card it is detecting..it may now be dead..or you can try using the onboard gfx just to pass installation..

Try another card/onboard and clean the agp slot with compressed air.

Hi, i have freshly formatted my computer, installed all the updates and drivers, i have also RMA'd my video card (which i thoroughly tested and found it works fine on other computers.) but i cant figure out why my screen goes black but the computer keeps running. I can hear my music still playing and i run a dual monitor setup but when my screen goes black both monitors keep bouncing around the "Analog / Digital" box and thats all i can see, i have tested the monitors on other computers and they work fine as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Answer:Screen Turns Black after 10-15 Minutes

Check your Power Settings, go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options, and check "Change Plan Settings" - Where it says "Turn off the Display" make sure that it is set to "never".

Even if you have Music playing, if you have the screen assigned to turn off after a period of time, it will. I usually use a screensaver instead.

I recently switched to a new hard drive on my dell Inspiron 2500 notebook. I used backup images burned to cd's via norton gohst to accomplish this. I originally had trouble just starting up but I have since edited the boot file and am able to start up but the problem is as follow:

Whenever I start the computer in regular mode the computer does its regular thing of showing the bar with the blue going across it and saying windows on top but then the screen goes black. During this time however the computer seems to be functioning correctly as if i had just turned the screen off.

The strange part is that if I start the cmputer in VGA mode it works and I can even optimize the visual settings so that it is as if nothing is wrong. How can I resolve this?

Thank you,
Joseph

Hi Super2015 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

About screen blank state (page25) :
If the time set on the ?Turn off monitor? timer in the operating system expires, the LCD backlight turns off. You can also turn off the LCD backlight by pressing Fn + F2. To end screen blank state and resume normal operation, press any key.

Try pressing FN + F2 again , else FN + F3 to opens the interface for selecting display options to change.

If pressing any key would not work , manually shutdown the pc and unplug any connected cables .
Press the Novo button (item 14 page 82) to power on the machine. Check to see any display on the laptop screen.

Update us how it goes.

So today I was having trouble connecting to a wireless internet network and decided to restart my computer. In the process, it was taking a long time so I turned it off using the power button. When I turned it back on, everything went on as usual (except for the screen at the start telling me the computer had not been shut off properly; I chose to start windows as normal). After I came to the log in screen and entered my password to login, the screen turned black but I could still move around the mouse. I left it alone for a while but nothing had happened. How can I fix this?I'm on Windows Vista Home Premium.Thank you!

Answer:Screen turns black after login

Let's get the obvious out of the way first - I assume you've tried rebooting again, yes? If so, boot to the Vists disk and try the repair options. In the future, you might consider using a disk imaging utility on a regular basis. Makes it a lot easier to recover from major problems.

I've read around and tried the following:

Alt+F4

removing the battery with the power cord unplugged and holding the power down for 20-30 secs (reset BIOS?) then put the power cord back in and tried to turn it on.

Just turning it off and on a few times(I guess it could be stuck in sleed mode?)

I tried to light up the screen with a flashlight to see if the LED went out but screen was still black.

It's a toshiba satellite sli1

Thoughts on other things I can try?

After leaving my laptop up for six hours, I come back and it looks like my screen brightness got set to an incredibly low value because I can barely make out the windows that I left on my screen, but for the most part, it looks like a black screen. I had not set it in hibernation mode; I had just left the screen there with all my windows open. And the computer is definitely on, because it's still playing music that I accidentally left playing on iTunes. I adjust the screen by pushing it forward, and suddenly the screen is back to normal ---- until the computer decides to randomly hibernate! I get it out of hibernation mode, and my brightness settings are still normal but the computer starts shutting down the minute I get it back up.So I turn the laptop back on again, and it starts up like a laptop normally would. I start Firefox, but then I get an error message telling me that Firefox is "not compatible with the Windows disc", so I can't freaking use an Internet browser. The computer's on for a few minutes until the screen suddenly turns "almost-black" again. Almost-black as in the brightness settings are incredibly low but I can baaaarely see the window if I squint just enough. And then it does the whole random-hibernation and random-shutdown thing again. I've tried starting it up two more times, and I've gotten the same exact reaction. Not only that, the last time I did it, after Windows started up, the screen automatically went ... Read more

Hello. I'm using Optiplex 7020 desktop. Recently, while gaming, the screen turned black for a second or two which was followed by a blue screen. Next up, after the restart, the screen kept turning black for a second or two every few seconds, voraciously keeping up to this pace even while not gaming. Sometimes, the screen will turn black for several seconds; but the PC and windows keeps running normally.
I contacted the support through live chat but they couldn't help me because I live in Egypt and they couldn't pull up my PC information due to where I live.
This is unbearable, I cannot use the PC. I hope I can receive a response soon.

I need Urgent help please. I have Windows Vista Home Premium x64 on a Gateway laptop. Whenever my recharger is plugged in to my laptop, and I try to use my laptop, the screen goes very dark (you can still sort of see, but its really dark to even work with the laptop). This happens about 5-10 seconds after I open my laptop's screen. In order to get rid of the darkness, I close the laptop's screen, reopen it, and 5-10 seconds later the screen goes black again. When I do not have my recharger plugged in, this problem won't happen. I also tried System Restore, which failed. However, when I go on Safe Mode, the problem does not occur even with the recharger plugged in. By closing the laptop screen, I mean taking the head (idk whats its called) and putting it down and picking the head back up. I really appreciate the help guys, I really need to get my laptop working again. For any other information about the laptop required, please ask. Thanks!

Hey guys!

I recently bought a new computer (all separate components which my brother assembled for me) and everything works fine. But as soon as I launch any game (like Crysis, Painkiller, Bioshock) the screen turns black and it doesn't respond to anything anymore. Old online games like quake live run like a charm though. Beyond good and evil runs smoothly, but somehow the eyes don't always follow the rest of the model, making the characters look like retards all the time.

I started having issues yesterday, the day after I installed teamviewer a program that is on my iPad also to remotely control the laptop. At first the screen started freezing when I was in the middle of a Java game. So I restarted the laptop only to have it freeze at the main screen (after login).

The screen would freeze the display would change to a very low resolution (I think). So I kept restarting it only to repeat. Until eventually once past the windows logo the screen would turn black and blank. Sometimes the display would turn on black and blank and other times it would do that after the logo.

A few times I managed to get it to go into safe mode and I restored to a few days ago but it made no difference, I also tried many other things like changing some settings but nothing worked.

So after like 2 or 3 hours I Rolled back and disabled "nvidia quadro nvs 135m" (since I read it might be causing the issue and I should uninstall it which I couldn't), once I disabled it I restarted the computer and made it to the main screen without issues, and I could even load my game.
