Computer won't turn on--constant black screen

Question: Computer won't turn on--constant black screen

I've seen this problem posted a lot, but never with all of the same details as me. I have Windows 8, but unsure if 64 or 32, I"m guessing 64. I have a sealed battery, so I'm unable to remove the battery. I rarely see my model number mentioned at all. I have turned the computer off and back on several times with peripherals removed. Right now, it's on and open (so it's not asleep) and not plugged in. All I can see and get is a black screen. The caps light blinks now and again. I really would rather not reset and lose everthing, of course, who does? What do I do?

Preferred Solution: Computer won't turn on--constant black screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Last night my computer locked up. So I had to resort to a button power down. When I restarted the computer it started up, but there was no display. I tried switching pci-e slots to see if it would make a difference, I also tried using the on-board video. But there was no response from trying those.

Motherboard
ASRock amd 785G

Video Card
Geforce 9800 GTX

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Allright guys, I've really had enough now. I've made a good four topics in the last week with problems I've been having with my computer/laptop and this just takes the 'effing biscuit. I can't go on my Laptop because my Wireless is broke, and now suddenly my computer has stopped working. I really just want to get rid of it all.

I came home tonight and turned my desktop PC on as usual. It started booting up normally, going through the black screens with the white text on identical as usual. Eventually I got to the screen with the XP Home logo and the green progress bar sliding up and down like it does. For some reason though, when this screen finished the monitor stayed black and nothing happend. The blue welcome screen that i'm usually presented with didn't load and after a short while the windows log-on sound came out of my speakers. The screen was still black. For some damn stupid reason my annoying retarded computer wasn't displaying anything on the screen, but everything was still going on in the background as normal as I could hear the sounds of my Antivirus and stuff popping up coming from the speakers.

The monitor is still on, it's like the screen gets stuck exacly at the point after the 'loading XP' screen dissapears. I've tried turning everything back off and on again, removing and re-inserting plugs, taking out the monitor cable and putting it in again. Nothing. I've been sat on trains since 6am this... Answer:Constant Black Screen during boot-up - Computer won't work...

One thing I didn't see in your descriptdion of the boot was a white cursor in the middle of the black screen, just before the Welcome splash.
I don't know what, if any effect that would have on continuing the boot process or why you lost your video.
For the heck of it, shut down, pull the Mouse connector and check for a bent pin.

No video means bad RAM or Video card. You could run Memtest to check the RAM.
I know of no way to check the video card except to put it in a different machine to see if it works. Of course, you would have to install the drivers for it.

I'm grabbing at straws here but it's something to try.

My computer that i own isn't working properly. Firstly, its about 4-5 years old the power button gets stuck. I've been fiddling with it from the outside to come out all the way since if it goes in all the way and doesnt come out, it keeps restarting. When i wiggle it out, it starts and goes.

Now onto my problem now. When i start up my computer, a screen pops up allowing me to press F1 for setup. if i don't click F1, my computer goes to a black screen with a _ blinking in the top right. I can't do anything from that point and when i press keys too many times, it starts beeping after i hit any key again.

Anyways if you guys could help me, I would be very thankful!

Answer:Turn on my computer, black screen

sounds like it may be time for an upgrade

have you made any hardware changes or installed new device drivers?

from what you describe it seems like the system is having some issues booting the operating system from the hard drive, or there could be another hardware fault causing the hangup... like the memory or motherboard itself. if you are able to view the POST screen upon startup (which displays all of the system information and keys to access BIOS etc...) then you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM to run repairs or possibly boot into safe mode by repeatedly striking the F8 key after the POST screen appears.

I turn on my computer, it begans to start up, and then the moniter just goes black and won't show the desktop or anything. It has done this every day for the past week or more and it's getting harder and harder to get onto the computer. What I do is turn the moniter on/off until it shows me a glimpse of the desktop, and then I mess with the screen saver power options (while it continues to keep going black and I have to turn the moniter on and off to get glimpes of what i'm doing), and eventually it just stops going black and works for the whole rest of the day until the next morning. I checked the FAQs and I heard people with the same situation mention video cards, but I'm not that great with computers and frankly I don't even know what that is. Help?

So I got a hp pavilion tx510us entertainment notebook (runs Vista) and it seems to turn on (like all the lights are on and it makes noises) but the screen is black/blank or whatever. And its not just a blank screen because then I would have been able to put my pass in and then hear the turn on music and stuff. The thing is this happened before when it was still under warranty so I sent it in for free and they sent it back and it turned on and it still had on all my stuff so it must have been an easy enough solution, but when I chatted with them again I guess they don't keep track of what they did to it and they want me to send it in again and that would cost a large sum of money because its no longer under warranty. I did a hard reset a few times and took out the memory module and put it back in agian but still nothing. So, anyone have any ideas?

My computer was dusty and may have been overheating. The fans were operating very loudly and i tried to turn on the screen but it is black. I cleaned the dust, and it still will not bring anything up on the screen. The fans work and i can hear the drives working. I tried changing the psu, cleaning the heatsink, and reseating everything. and removed the battery and put it back in to reset the bios. Nothing has worked so far. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated? Is it possible that i fried my motherboard or processor?

i am using my laptop to report this.cause i can't use the one with the black screen.HELP!!!!!! when it first comes on its like it tries to start but just stays black.can it be fixed or do i have to buy a new screen?(i'm not sure if its called the screen or the monitor.i just know that when i turn the tower on,there is no picture .

Answer:black screen after i turn my tower to my other computer on.r

If you do not see the message "No Signal" on the monitor screen, very likely it's the monitor itself which is faulty or "dead".To check if it is indeed the monitor which needs replacing, connect it to your laptop if possible (there should be a VGA port on one side of your laptop so you can connect the monitor using the same VGA cable that connects monitor to your PC). If the monitor does not work on your laptop either, you need a new monitor. However, if your tower is not starting up it won't be a faulty monitor. There is something wrong inside the tower. Get someone to check it over, maybe needs a new PSU (Power Supply Unit) which fits inside the tower.Do not rush out to buy a new monitor if the tower is not starting up as the problem will be inside the tower.message edited by phil22

I was playing a game on my PC while it was storming out and the power surged. Before I could unplug my pc the power came back on and my computer started back up. After starting back up it said installing update do not turn off the computer. I waited until it was done then it brought me to a black screen with a Windows logo and a circular loading bar. I waited somewhere between 5-10minutes before holding down the power button until it turned off. Upon turning the computer back on all the fans would work and everything it would show the blue screen that says to press esc then brings me to a black screen where it would have a _ mark in the top left and beep non stop. It isnt a long beep or anything its just multiple beeps non stop until I turn it off. I have tried taking out the ram and putting it back in but it just keeps beeping. I did a mem test and it showed that nothin was wrong with the ram. The beeps are high pitched and very fast. I have a video showing what happens if there is a way to post it.

My wifes laptop has developed a problem. On booting it starts with the "Windows starting " logo and then goes to a black screen and goes no further. It looks like the hard drive is still flashing away giving the impression that underneath it is still working but no picture. We want to use the repair disc that came with the laptop but because we cant see anything to shut the computer down via windows we are having to use the power button and therefore it prompts to start up again in safe mode because it was shut down unusually. We want to close it down completely and let the repair disc do its work on boot up from fresh start. Because we cant see anything on the screen to initiate shut down via windows is there another way of shutting down completely for the above reasons.
Also do I need to press f2 and tell the system boot from the cd (repair disc) or can I leave settings as is and it will do it automatically. Answers appreciated asap. Many thanks

Answer:How else do I turn off windows when computer has black screen.

On many laptops pressing and releasing the on/off button acts as a re-set but if you hold the power button down for 5 to 10 seconds the machine will turn off completely.

HI,
My problem started back when i tried to install windows 7 on another disk, but it would not. Now i did this while my primary windows 7 hard drive was already istalled. after i gave up on trying to get windows to install onto this secondary hard drive, i rebooted the computer to find that my primary ssd would not load windows, and simple came to a black screen that said:

Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to restart

then i would press a key and it would say:

Reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

I have no recovery disk and most definitely do not understand what remove disks or other media means because I removed the windows installer dis and tried again but nothing happened. Please help, i am so confused, thankyou.

Hi Guys,

I got a virus this morning and moved it to chest and then I restarted it, when it began to boot, it froze for about a minute at the boot screen then proceeded to load after this, so I shut it down and turned it back on and had to wait about a minute on the boot screen to get past it, it so I went into the bios and clicked the reset to optimized defaults incase it had a problem, so I saved it and exited.

The computer then booted it as it would do when i turn it on but now the screen stays black?

Anyone have any suggestions what to do? as its just black and I can't see anything to get into the bios or such?

Thanks in advance

Answer:turn on the computer and power light goes on but screen remains black

If this is a notebook PC, try connecting an external monitor to the VGA port. If the display comes up on the external monitor, it points to an issue with the screen.

If there is no display on an external monitor connected to a notebook PC, it points to an issue with the motherboard and will require a professional diagnosis.

Hope this helps.

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

Answer:constant black screen

Hello asmith350,  First of all, we need to find out it is hardware or software issue.  -Could you please open bios screen and check is problem going on?- If problem goes on in bios screen, most probably this is a hardware issue and you should contact with HP support- If not, check status of your device's hinges when the lid opening and closing.- You should also try to update your unit's bios and graphic card driver from  http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

Hello,
Wondering if anyone knows the fix for random black screens and crashes for an Alienware X51-R3 running a GXT 970.   I've always had problems with it running hot but for the last few months its been having random black screens (mostly while playing games but also on the desktop).  This started happening so frequently that I changed the display port output on the card but that only helped for like a week.   I have run all the stress tests and the system passes but I constantly have to reboot my system to get my screen back.  In most cases, I can still hear audio but can't get the screen back.  Here is what I have tried:

Disabled the other card (intel HD 530).
Run all the built in optimizers
Updated drivers.
removed and reinstalled the GTX (software only)
Run games in compatibility mode (Diablo 3, Planet Coaster)

As I have typed this post my screen has gone black 4 times.  Is the card constantly resetting because it is going bad??

Hello, We have two Aspire Z3-600 systems and the same problem is happening on both. After the latest Windows 10 update, I believe it's called the "Anniversary Update", the screen is blacking out for about a second, at random, and about 5 to 10 times a minute!  It's impossible to use the PCs for any amount of time. It's a definite software issue because the black-outs happen much more often when specific software is running. For example, when I opened the window for the Acer ID information to get the serial no, etc, that window caused much longer black screens and I didn't even have time to click the Print button before the next screen blackout. We checked Windows Update twice, we uninstalled and reinstalled the video drivers (the most probable culprit) we run the Windows Devices troubleshooter which found some driver update and installed it, but nothing solved the problem.  We get on the desktop OK, start using MS Office, or other software and the black-outs start again. Any suggestions will be very appreciated. We need the PCs to do actual work, and the sooner we can solve this problem the better. Thank you. ===[Edit]===== We also did a couple more things that I found as suggestions from the MS support site:Booted in Safe Mode and disabled all non-MS services. I just got my new laptop, and it's already unusable. The screen constantly turns off before making a device disconnect/connect sound, then comes back on. At first I thought it was my mouse, but the problem persists even when it is unplugged. I've looked all over but I can't seem to find a clear answer to this problem. How can I fix this? I can barely use my laptop now. Sorry if this question has already been answered or I posted in the wrong sub. Thanks in advance.

This has been an issue that's eluded me for sometime. I'm not sure what caused it to start, but this is something that bothers me. It would be up to 1-2 hours before my computer will start freezing. Once this happens, it seems me processor skyrockets up to 70-80% and then freezing every 1-2 minutes before black screening.

This error was found in Application of Event Viewer:

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

I'm not sure if this error is directly related to my issue, but I was posting as much information for you guys to work with.

Hello there,

A few days ago, my computer started up as usual and showed the Packard Bell logo. The underscore cursor blinked 3 times and then the computer rebooted. This continued all day so it's definitely not temporary. I plugged the hard drive into another computer, and it had the same problem. The PCB on the hard drive has no visible signs of damage; the hard drive IS displayed in the BIOS, and there are no unusual sounds coming from the hard drive. What could the problem be?

-Rixterz

Answer:Black screen and constant reboot - hard drive failure?

Sounds like the hard drive could potentially be corrupted, if that is the case, my advice is to plug the hard drive into another computer and backup your personal data, and then do a fresh install on the hard drive. If that doesn't work, then the hard drive has most likely failed.

I have a HP Probook 4710s. The screen remains black when I turn the computer on. The other lights work, like the power button and caps lock while turning on. It happened suddenly, the screen worked perfectly earlier. I tried unplugging the charger, taking out the battery and holding the power button etc but it did not work. What could be the problem and how can I solve it? Thank you

Answer:Black screen (won't turn on)

Shine a light on the screen and see if the image is there but just faint. If so, the backlight failed. Otherwise, I'd suspect a video issue (video chipset, cabling, screen).

ControlPanel>Settings>PowerOptions set everything to Never. If there is a Hibernate tab, go to it and disable hibernation. Then go into ControlPanel>Settings>Display and turn off your screensaver altogether. If your problem is solved, you can put the screensaver back on, altho I would choose a diff one that what you had first. If the problem stays gone, you could go back to the orig screensaver and see if it is ok.

After installing Windows Service Pack 2 on our other computer, it started to freeze up, the screen would go black and it won't turn off. Control/alt/delete won't work, the power button won't shut if off, all we can do is pull the plug. We uninstalled ServicePack2 thinking that was the cause, but it still randomely does this. Sometimes it does it while playing various games and other times when just surfing the web. No warning of any kind, just a black screen and not being able to turn it off at all. I was wondering if system restore back to before we installed the Service Pack would work, or reinstsalling windows (a huge pain) or complete reformate (a bigger pain). Anyone have an easier suggsetion?

Answer:Black screen and won't turn off

There is no harm in trying system restore as it is reversible.

However, I noticed that the white blinking light stayed on, like it does when it is in sleep mode, so i opened the computer and it turned on, except the screen is completely black and I can only see the mouse pointer. You can hear the machine running but the screen is entirely black. Nothing shows up, no log in screen or anything, and if I push the off button on the side of the laptop, it goes into sleep mode. HELP!Also, earlier in the day I clicked on a link and it said that it gave me a virus, so I ran the antivirus multiple time and found nothing, could this be the problem?

Hi.

I currently own 3 pc's and all of them now have the same problem. When i switch the power on from Stand By, the computers power up however the screen stays black and doesn't even boot up (I have tried switching the computer fully off).

Even after turning the computer on it doesn't go to boot, the fan switches itself on at high speed and screen stays black.

I have 3 different operating systems all windows on each of the pc's however on my sony laptop, i can counter this by starting with no constant power by using the battery only. this however doesn't work on the acer laptop of HP touch smart.

If you have any ideas, please cna you help.

Thanking you in advance.

Ok this is kind of weird. Ive recently installed a game and while playing I miss typed some keys (which are near the region of ESC, including that one, the one next to 1, and a sleep button). Somehow, a combination of miss typed keys lock my computer. It stops, then the screen goes black, and the CPU light starts to blink and the fan runs likes crazy.

Then nothing..., i cant turn the CPU off, cant restart it, cant press any key to do anything. The computer just wont turn off. The only way to restart the system is to pull the plug, but that has caused my some trouble already.

It has been happening to me sometimes (i think around four or five times) and i need to know what is happening to my computer and how to solve the problem without pulling the plug if this comes to happen again.

Thank you very much for the help (and sorry for my bad english)

Could be Function and F1 key is setting your PC into security mode, but this should recover by pressing any key. Other Function keys could be setting PC into hibernation or standby mode. Are there any symbols on the function keys other than F1, F2 etc?

What make/model is the PC? What O/S are you using? What was the game you are playing? A bit more information would help others help you

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then we'll move to the next step.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds); (if the computer doesn't power on, move to the next step)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

Recently my computer keeps giving me a same problem whereby the screen would suddenly turned totally black or yellow colors upon booting up or sometimes when i am already in the window.

For the about the first 20 secs when the screen goes down, im still able to hear the sound of the applications running on the window and then after that no sound is heard.Even so the CPU light is still running and the only way to solve it would be restarting my com for a few times. I am not too sure if it's my graphic card giving me the problem.

I am currently using a GeForce 8800GT and its less then a year old. Its only after the incident, i went to update my drivers but the problem still exists.I am a lehman in this area, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Black screen when I turn on Satellite M

Hello!

Have you connected an external monitor to the notebook? I ask this because at the moment it?s hard to say if it?s mainboard or monitor problem. Check this!!!

But I assume it?s something wrong with the hardware if this happens before Windows boot. Maybe it would be a good option if you go to an authorized service provider for help. They can check the notebook and tell you what the reason is for that.

I have a Dell Latitude C610, with Win2K. My hubby says he played a music CD he made recently & the laptop froze up. He says the CD played OK. He took it out, laptop still froze, turned it off for a few hours, & when he tried again, nothing would work. The CD plays OK in my desktop, so it seems that's not the cause, was just trying to accurately report what happened.

I come home, check it out, the screen is black, and it's still warm, & I can't turn it off. The on light is lit, the battery light is blinking. I tried unplugging it, but it stayed on using the battery. Nothing happens when I push the power button. I know a black screen isn't a good sign. I'd just like to turn it off & back on again, that works with my desktop.

What else should I try?

I have a Compaq Notebook PC with Windows 7. I was using it the other night and i locked it as I always do, and I opened the lid the next morning and the screen was black. So I shut it down with the power button and turned it back on, but the screen was still black. I don't know what to do with it. I haven't even had it a year. I bought it February of 2010. I really need help, I have no clue what to do... Please help!!

Answer:My laptop will turn on, but the screen is black.

Well, you should of posted in Windows 7 forum, so I'll move it for you. But being it is less then a year old, and I've never heard of a laptop with less then a year of warranty, you should contact Compaq about getting it repaired. But things to check, is the brightness turned up? There should be a key on the keyboard that'll adjust the brightness levels. Also, most Windows laptops have an option to turn the screen off when connected to an external screen. Look for that button on the keyboard and cycle it a few times and see if your screen comes back to life. Also, find a monitor to plug into the video out port on the laptop and see if you get a picture on it.

For several months the monitor (LCD) turns black for about 3 seconds, returns to normal for about 3 seconds, then black for another 3 seconds and back again to normal. This can happen off or on line, there is no loss of connection or work. This can occur at anytime during PC activity ? in most cases it is just once and rarely twice in the session. At first I thought that it might be the monitor, but having just acquired a new Acer 19?, I am still confronted with the same problem, which leads me to think that it might be the PC.It is a Powerc built AMD Sempron 3000+ Athlon.OS XP Home.I would appreciate any comments from members has may have had a similar problem.Thank you.

Greetings all, so lately I've been having some problems with my Dell Vostro A860 that runs Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit service pack 2. Anyway recently I've been having problems with my laptop. I often leave my laptop on while I'm around the house doing things, mainly it's downloading or running a virus check, but when I return the screen is off (which is good, I set my screen to turn off after a few minutes) but when I try to get the screen to turn on again by pressing a key on the keyboard or clicking the touchpad or moving it nothing happens. I can't get the screen to turn back on and so I am forced to hard reset my laptop which I really don't like to do. When I start up the computer again it works fine but I notice that not much of my downloads or scan have been completed like the computer froze pretty early on.

At first I thought it was a virus or something so I posted on the appropriate forums on here, here is the link to that topic:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic414131.html

Unfortunately it appears that this isn't the problem so now I'm here trying to find help to resolve this issue. I hope someone out there knows the cause of this problem and a way I can fix it. Thanks in advance!

Most of the times screen changed to a radom color (green mostly) then becomes black/shuts down. NOTE: The laptop keeps runing, i can hear the videos playing so it probably isnt a gpu chip or gpu issue , music and games.  I searched the web for all kind of reasons that this could happen and tried some of the fixes . Here are everything i tried and all or the details i could accumulate in past coupe of days: 1. If the screen flickers , blacks out and then turns back on i get a message that gpu drivers have stopped working and recovered (  on both amd and intel ). 2. If the screen blacks out, on rare ocasions if you close the laptop lid and let the laptop go to sleep , when waking up screen works again ( noticable due to screen moving) 3. I tried installing 4 different drivers all with clear install. ( didn't work) 4. I tried to  to recover system with restore point. ( didn't work) 5.... Read more

Answer:Random laptop screen Black out / Turn off .

Hi @Ntas  I have read through your post and it seems there are a couple of possibilities, and I noted that you have already tried several of the things I would normally suggest. I will however post some of those links anyway for you to review, it is always possible there may be something in one of them that may have been missed or may inspire an idea of the cause. Since you mentioned that sometimes just moving the screen will cause the problem or make it disappear, that does seem like either a loose connection or maybe something like pressure on a part of the display causing the issue.  Of course that last part may just mean the display is on its last legs, but hopefully not. First I will give you a link to the service manual, to help you check the connections. Just be careful to read the sections on precautions, to protect yourself and to prevent any other damage. This manual is also useful in that it lists all the compatible parts, so if the display is defective you could use this guide to help order a compatible replacement if you choose to do so. Hello When you say it wont turn on I assume you mean no power at all? If this is the case have you tried to check if the power adaptor is working?

So in my previous post I had issues with the video card overheating (I think)

It wasn't corrupt drivers because I managed to uninstall the drivers and install the latest drivers for my video card (which took me about 6 hours to accomplish due to the pixelated screen of death)

Anyways, I cooled off the room and put a big fan on the side of my case and everything seemed to work just fine until I started getting blue screens quite frequently (like every hour or so).

One of them listed as (if I recall) IRQ_LESS_THAN_something_something (I think)

Others had something to do with win2k.sys and some other file was on another blue screen.

So I system restored back to where it was working without blue screens. I eventually got the pixelated screen of death again and I know for a fact my video card wasn't overheating at that point (I least maybe I don't think it was).

So I restarted it like normal and it showed my MoBo's logo screen and after that it went black/blank. I restarted more times for the next 30 mins and now it just shows a black/blank screen as soon as I turn the computer on. No MoBo beep, no keyboard LED's light up...nothing.

Everything else still works like the fans, the CD-ROM lights up/ejects, the MoBo light is on, etc. It just doesn't do anything passed that point. So I took out the battery to refresh my CMOS and left it out for 10 mins or so, put it back in...nothing.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Answer:[SOLVED] Black/Blank screen on turn-on

Welcome back to TSF, sorry to hear about your issues

What we need is the exact and complete BSOD Stop error. If you could please jot that down and reply back with that info we may get a better idea what is causing your BSOD.

Also, have you reseated the video card? Remove from the slot and reseat.

Hello, the other day I started a game on my notebook and it turned off. When trying to start it up again the screen turned black with purple code across it and couldn't fully boot up. After leaving it alone for a day I went to turn it back on and it worked fine. A couple days later I went to turn it on and it started to boot up but the screen stayed black. I have tried the bios power reset, and the cap lock blinks white 5 times, two fast then a break, twice fast then a break then once more. It has been a few days and this problem is persisting. I have tried hooking it up to an external monitor and it tries to connect then days signal can't be found. Any help would be appreciated!!

My Dell Inspiron 24 all in one will not turn on. I just get a black screen. Power light is white. If I hit the volume buttons  it then cycles through red blue green.  It was working fine yesterday.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 24 all-in-one gets Black Screen when trying to turn on

Is this an Inspiron 24-5459 AIO?
I don't see any "volume" buttons on the setup diagram for the 5459.  Have you tried pressing the Screen-off button which is right above the Power button?   The 2 buttons above the Screen-off button are the brightness controls.
You can try powering off and unplugging the power cord from the rear of PC and from the wall. Then press/hold power button for ~30 sec. Reconnect the power cord to rear of PC and then to the wall and see what happens when you boot now...
And if this system is under warranty, you may need to contact Dell Tech Support.

Answer:Lenovo z510 help - turn it on it goes to black screen

hi Narwhal6,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Can you try Removing the Ac adapter first.
     turn the computer ON
Once you have the blackscreen with lights on.
Hold The power button down till it shuts off Continue to hold down thepower button for at least 15 sec after the system Shuts down.

Turn it back on and check.

If the Same
You can call Lenovo Technical Team if the system is still under Warranty
or If not

Try Removing few parts inside to check what could be causing it.

Try the HDD first REmove it and turn it on see if you'll get a different result.

Then try removing and Reseating the RAM.
If you have two RAM modules remove both and try just one module on two ports.
            then try the other.

You can use this z510 Maintenance Manual on how to get to the parts.

Let me know your findings

I've had my NB550D for just under a month. I've upgraded the memory to 2Gb and the Op System to Home Premium, but nothing else. It's on auto update re security issues and I've stayed with the McAfee protection that was pre-installed (and paid for a year).

Everything fine until a couple of days ago when switching on, I just got black screen. Could hear fan and disk though. Eventually pressed the on/off button, nothing changed, waited a bit, pressed it again and it turned off. When I pressed again it came on as normal. Used it several times over last couple of days and was fine. Now today I switch on and black screen again, and can hear fan. When I eventually pressed switch, I could hear disk whirr but still just black screen. Since then have tried pressing on/of switch occasionally but no change at all - can't even get it to switch off!

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Flingel

Answer:NB550D boots into black screen and can't even turn off

I read in another forum that the answer is to take the battery out (having already taken the mains out) so it'll die and then press and hold the power button for 30 - 60 seconds. I had nothing urgent to do so let it die naturally when the battery ran out rather than take the battery out when it was on. I then held the power button for 60 seconds, plugged it into the mains and switched on again. It's started fine now but of course I don't know a) whether that's because I held the power button in for 60 seconds and b) whether same thing's going to happen again, so if anybody does have experience of this behaviour, I'd be grateful for comment.

Thanks

i have just put in a graphics card (asus EN9800gt 512mb hybrid power) and wen i turn it on all i get is a black screen! what could the problem be?
I have a 500w pc and its a very brand new pc with 64bit windows 7 and intergrated grraphics.

also note that the first time i put it in i forgot to put in the 6pin adaptor and when i turned it on it made a big beeping noise. could this have stuffed up the card? becoz wen i remove it, the pc works fine

help please???

Answer:put in graphics card bt only black screen wen turn on!!

i think ive had this problem before. the beeping sound you heard was I believe the POST telling you that something is wrong with the graphics card. This is expected since you forgot to plug in the power. For me, it turned out that my power supply was a bust. Everything else turned on fine but there was never anything on the screen. Replaced the psu and everything booted up. See if you can find a replacement? Your wattage seems to be fine.

Answer:Please help latitude e5430 won't turn on and black screen

Hi Maffemzellienbump,
I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check for issue resolution.

Switch off the computer.
Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
Remove the battery from the computer.
Press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
Then connect back all the peripherals and check for issue resolution.

Also, I would suggest you reseat a few components, like memory, hard drive and optical drive and see if that makes a difference. In the link below punch in the system service tag or express service code and you can access the user manual for removing and reseating components. http://dell.to/18r60nI Please let me know if this helps.

Hi,
I have a Satellite L650D-178 notebook with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium. For a while it didn't start properly, but not everytime, just every now and then. I could not recognise any pattern, when and why this happens.
When I press the power button it turns on, as indicated by the second LED (white). But the screen stays black and it doesn't boot.
In the past this happend up to five times (if I forced a shut down by keeping the power button pressed), then it started normal.
Today this happend again, but it still doesn't start properly after many tries.
No difference in behaviour, no matter if an extern screen is connected or not or I use battery or cable. Charging still works (indicated by LEDs). Pressing any key has no function (e.g. num lock LED stays off).

I'm really helpless here. Anybody has an idea? Did somebody encounter the same problem?

I can boot fine in safe mode, then I tried disabling the display adapter and rebooted. This worked fine, turned it back on rebooted and it boots to black screen, then eventually says no signal and automatically reboots.

I'm guessing it's a driver issue? I did download the new nVidia driver for my card (GTX 570) but that was a few days ago, and it has been working fine up until today. So I don't really know what the issue is then.

Any body know how I would go about fixing this?

EDIT: Tried a clean installation of the latest nVidia drivers and still no luck.

Dear Sir,I hope you can help with my problem. I have listed below some things from my System Information, which may be helpful. My PC details: Windows XP with XP SP2. I had the computer built for me after I bought the parts. The computer was built in 2003. The builder is a professional but I cannot contact him now. I use Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 and, Ad-aware 2007 Pro included with it is Ad-Watch. Office 10. And have been using Registry First Aid Agent Platinum. The problem: the top and bottom of the screen start menus, and dropdown menus go black. The body of whatever I am typing stays normal. Sometimes it rights itself in a second or two. Other times I have to re-boot to clear the black. I enclose a screenshot showing the black areas, as an attachment. It happens about once every 40 to 60 minutes. I have un-installed the Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0, Ad-Aware 2007 Pro including Ad-Watch, and run several different 'Registry cleaners'. I then re-installed new versions of Kaspersky and Ad-Aware, with no improvement. When parts of the screen go black the screen 'jumps', though anything I have on the screen stays there and is workable if I can remember where the appropriate icons are on the screen to save or just to re-boot.I think it may have started when I downloaded up-dates to Windows. But I download updates automatically and manually, with several items at any one time. So figuring out which may be the culprit is difficult for me.I have been to my system informat... Read more

Can someone tell me whats wrong?
I have tried the take the battery out / hold power for 60 seconds put the wire back in with battery out etc, tried external monitor thing, tried different ram etc but nothing at all.
Any suggestions?

I had to replace the mother board on mine. It sounds like yours is doing the same thing mine did, I would suggest replacing it yourself if possible or if you are unable to find someone who can it is very easy to replace. Also you will need a new dvd player it sounds like yours is no good. But who ever fixes your pc should be able to confirm whether it is good or bad.
I hope this helps
You can find the mother board online for about $150 and 20 for a DVD Rom Drive

Last night my computer was working perfectly fine with no indication of a problem. I come home the next day to turn it on, and of course nothing happens. It get's power but theres no picture on the monitor, it's black. So i try to turn the computer off and now it wont turn off, so i turned i turned off the powerstrip.

So i started with the most simple the cords and such, but everything is in the right place. I examined the monitor, but it was working fine. So i turned it back on to see if i could find something. In the long run i found nothing and i came to the conclusion it has it's probly my motherboard or something is wrong with my powersupply or even my cmos battery.

It's to tricky for me i just want to know where to start. The bios wont even load and i dont have spare parts laying around to test things out. the other thing is that power will only go on and not off. So i'm thinking about trying a new power supply first. If you have any idea's why i'm haveing this current problem please let me know.

Laptop, Thinkpad X200s.
It worked fine yesterday evening. Closed the lid, put it in my bag and today it wont turn on.

I've tried using just power source and just battery. I've tried pressing the power button quickly 20 times and then holding it for 60 seconds.

I've tried pulling the battery and power source out, holding the power button down for 60 seconds and then just connect the power source without battery. Same problem.

But you may try reseating the RAM modules (remove and insert them back to place) or resetting CMOS (pull off the CMOS battery and plug it back, need to remove keyboard). The procedures should be clearly described in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Dell Latitude E6400. When I'm not using it for a while the screen goes black (like into a sleeping mode) like all computers and laptops do. But if it stays black for a little while, and when I go to get back on it and move the mouse around or press the keys the screen won't turn back on but the computer is running because the light on the keyboard are lit up and I can hear the fan running. The only way I can get the screen back on is if I shut it down by pressing the power button on my keyboard and turning it back on.

Can anyone please tell me what to do or what is wrong with it. That would be much appreciated. Thank you

When doing a cold boot, the fans and everything come on, but there is no output to the screen, and the keyboard and mouse turn on and off repeatedly. There is a pattern to it: both come on, both turn off then on again, mouse alone turns off and on again, then both stay on.

Running Windows 8.1 x64, already wiped and reinstalled OS once. This fixed the issue for a couple weeks but now its back again.

Any idea what this could be?

Edit: There is no POST, no beeps (though I'm not sure my motherboard has a speaker at all). If I insert a boot disk like the Windows install disk, it picks it up and starts normally. I'm assuming Windows 8 suppresses the normal POST?

Answer:Black screen on boot, mouse and keyboard turn off and on

So by the way it sounds, if you use a boot disk you get output to the screen and everything? It will boot from the bootdisk?

It sounds like you are having OS corruption issues. I wonder if you dont have a failing hard drive.

Download Falcon Four BootCD from here

Burn that to a CD or create a bootable USB using Rufus. Download here

Boot from that. There are programs on there that will do an offline disk check. See if they come up with anything.
