I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

Answer:T61 - Windows Server 2012 Datacenter

Hello,

From looking at the system requirements here on Microsoft's web site, it looks like the T61 meets the requirements for running Windows Server 2012, but that's largely because Microsoft doesn't seem differentiate between requirements for the Foundation, Essentials, Standard and Datacenter editions.

Personally, I'd suggest going with the biggest, fastest 2012-vintage (or newer) laptop that I could find, such as a W520 or W530.

Hello and thanks for looking in to this.

I recently bought a new computer to use for all sorts of hosting. Specs are following:
Intel Quad 2.99 GHz
6gb RAM
1 tb harddrive
Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit
fibre/ethernet cable

So after using it for hosting for a while, I realized that I could need Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) for other people using it. I couldn't get it to work, so I looked it up. Apparently the version of windows I had doesn't support it, so I decided to try the evaluation version of Windows Server 2008 Datacenter 64-bit.

I managed to dual boot it along with 7 just fine, but problems started revealing themselves quickly upon startup.
The first thing I saw in the "initial configuration tasks" was: "Network adapters: None detected".
I tried reconnecting my cable to the computer, with no success. I also tried "add new hardware" through control panel to add network adapters, with no success. The adapters shows up as faulty, due to being unable to load drivers.

Out of my arena of knowledge, I can't do so much more about this issue. But I need windows server 2008 datacenter up and running.

My question is, can anyone help me, or guide me step by step for setting up any network connection at all? I'm available through msn, phone, skype or these forums. Although skype or phone is prefered.

Thank you ever so much!

-Adrian

Hello everyone, this is my first post and I count on your support.
I am currently trying to install Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Edition using Windows Deployment Services on two discs 136.12gb raid 1, but this will not let me because it says I need at least 150GB HDD to proceed with the installation, the same method is applied in virtualized machines in hyperv and Proxmox and does not throw me any error. (see attached image)
The server details are as follows:
DELL poweredge r610 128gb ramintel xeon 2.67ghz 6 core
4 hdd en raid 0 each independent:hdd 931gbhdd 931gbssd 446.42 gbhdd 1862.50 gb
2 hdd both raid 1:hdd 136.12 gbhdd 136.12 gb
I count on your support.
Thankful in advance.

.. hoping I can get some help on this. Driving me nuts!

Since upgrading to Windows Server 2016, WOL doesn't work for me. I've ruled out network or router issues, since it works perfectly fine on my Windows 7 machine.

I have 3 NICs in a team, but that's irrelevant, since the WOL doesn't work even if I disabled the teaming. One thing I did notice is that when I shutdown my Windows 7 machine, the NICs remain lit. However, the NICs on my Windows Server 2016 completely turn off. I don't recall if that was the case when I was using 2012 on the same hardware, but it seems strange to me. If the NICs are completely off, I can't imagine there is a way for them to receive magic packets.

I checked the UEFI and all the necessary options are enabled for WOL. I also tried upgrading the NIC drivers on the server but that didn't help. I read that Windows 10 has a "fast startup" option that messes with WOL, so I disabled it in the Group Policy settings on the server, but that didn't work either.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful for the help.

I'm looking at setting up windows 2003 terminal servers all over the place to replace the awful thing people are currently doing here - vncing servers with one small shared password among everyone <holding my hands over my ears for the backlash>. Don't blame me, it's another awful legacy I have to get rid of...

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

2. Also, I know that Windows XP has an RDP client, I've used before on many occasions, but what about all the Windows 2000 clients that I still have out there. What should I do for them to access the new Terminal Servers?

Answer:Terminal Server license server(s)? RDP client for Windows2K?

I'm not 100% sure on #1, but I believe that the TS licensing becomes integrated into the AD, so if one DC goes down, the other one will be able to check licensing. On another note, if you are using the TS for administration only, I don't believe you needs the TS Licensing to be installed.

For #2, you can download the latest version of the RDP client from MS's website. It should also be available through Windows Updates, although I think Win2K isn't supported any longer, other than Critical Updates.

Can someone explain this to me better than the Microsoft website. From my understanding of it, I'm purchasing the software, but if I or my dev team want to connect(rdp or vnc) to it I need to purchase these user licenses? I think I interpreted it correctly there. But I'm kinda shaky on the device licenses. If someone could explain that a little better for me I would greatly appreciate it. I'm really only a developer and haven't had to put much effort into managing our budget/purchases before.

Answer:Windows Server 2008 CAL license

CAL is for when a user is accessing the server for a resource on it.

CAL isnt for when your logging into the machine (RDP/VNC), if you have the machine setup as a terminal server, then you would need TS CALS for each user accessing it.

A recent cumulative update for Exchange 2016 was intended to add support for Windows Server 2016. But, after numerous reported issues, Microsoft has acknowledged a problem exists.

According to the release notes?

If you attempt to run Microsoft Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016, you will experience errors in the IIS host process W3WP.exe. There is no workaround at this time. You should postpone deployment of Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016 until a supported fix is available.

Once again, Microsoft?s testing of its own patches seems to have taken a backseat to accelerated release deadlines.

Hi guys,

Had a question I need verified from more knowledgeable folks.

Client currenlty has a yearly resellers license for server 2008 (@$75) and 290 CAL license @ $2.50 per license. Yearly fee is somewhere around $850

From my understanding, all we need is the server license + the computers that will communicate with the server. The school is an ALL MAC school, and only connect to the mac servers. They do not connect to the windows server at all. The windows server is mainly to monitor the network, UPS and backup server for a couple of the windows PCs.

So anyway, the original plan for the previous contractors was for a SAN or a NAS served through the Windows server for each student to have access, thus requiring the 290 or so CALs. However, since we have taken over, I think I plan to move them towards using MAC environment NAS or something of the sort eliminating the need for the CALs except for the few PCs that may need it.

Is this the right recommendation?

Answer:Windows Server 2008 + CAL License Question

If a computer/user authenticates to a Windows server, even with no password Everyone file shares, you need a CAL for either the user or computer, whichever you have fewer of typically.

Hi folks,
I am working with a company (that I have actually worked with for over 10 years on a consulting basis) and we are auditing our Microsoft Windows Server and server product licenses and preparing to upgrade Windows Server products.  We have ran into a snag, where the former System Administrator left the company a few years ago, however it was understood that the information regarding the VLSC was transferred to another partner in the company.  A new Systems Administrator has taken over, and we have determined that we do not have this information, including a Microsoft account username and password to access the VLSC and our Windows Server 2008R2 product keys, license agreements, SKUs, and downloads.  Unfortunately, the situation became took a turn for the worse about three months ago when the partner that had this information passed away.  No one at the company has access to this login information.  I currently administer most of their licensing, and have access to their much of their licensing information, download, product keys, etc., but I am clearly missing some very important ones.  I called Microsoft and they were of no assistance.  Since I am an administrator on the network, I can create a mailbox that the VLSC was probably originally registered under, however the VLSC says that Microsoft account is not even valid, not even prompting for the password.
I have a mailbox on their Exchange Server for their domain to prove I am ass... Read more

Answer:Client(s) can't connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 server

You were on the right track, but having the server listen on localhost/127.0.0.1 may or may not be what you want. Regardless, you need to tell SQL to bind to the ethernet interface since you're trying to connect to it over the network.

Do a netstat -a on the server and see if you have 0.0.0.0:1433 or the ethernet interface:1433. You could also do telnet serverip 1433.

If it's not listening on the desired interface, you need to look up how tell SQL to bind to that interface (I don't know, I'm not familiar with it either).

Starting a migration from SBS 2011 to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.

The migration doc says to "run the Migration Preparation Tool on the Source Server". I've found one link online stating that when going from SBS 2011 to Server 2012 R2 this step isn't necessary - but I've yet to find any other proof of this.

If I am supposed to run the prep tool, where the heck is it??? Because it's not in the listed location on the ISO from MS:
2.Open Windows Explorer, browse to the \support\tools folder of the DVD, and then double-click the sourcetool.msi file.Click to expand...

Ideas?

Ok, this is what I currently run on my desktop PC (under Windows 8.1u1) that I want to move over to a more dedicated computer so my desktop PC isn't on all the time.

My web server is primarily for web development and teaching myself web programming. I also use it to stream music and video off my computer through Subsonic whenever I'm in the hospital or away from home like visiting my sister, for example.

I also host a Starbound and Minecraft server that I play with a couple friends. The Minecraft server [used to] updates a real-time map of our MC server. (I'm waiting for a Bukkit update so sticking to MC server vanilla at the moment.)

I have Windows Server 2003 Web that I got through Microsoft's DreamSpark program many years ago. Given its age, I was wondering if I should skip that and move to 2008 R2 or 2012 R2 since they're more up-to-date.

This is more of a hobby than something I'd use to make money off of. I'm also debating whether to put this in a VM so I can run maybe FreeNAS (with ZFS) in another VM to host the media files. That or get another license for Stablebit Drivepool and do that on a single server.

I still have to look into hardware since I want one that's:
Low- to medium-power so it's easy on the electricity bill.
Powerful enough to do real-time transcoding of audio (FLAC->MP3) and video files (MKV->MP4/FLV) through Subsonic.
Can run both Starbound and Minecraft servers without lagging or delays.

Dear community For educational purposes (study of SW architectures) I would like to install Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012 directly on a ThinkPad T420s without having a host operating System and a virtual guest. The idea behind this is to get the best usage of the resources. Unfortunately most of the built in hardware is not recognized. At least I would like to have drivers for the network adapters and the display adapter. Everything else is a nice to have. Does anyone of you have an idea where I could get drivers for the mentioned server operating systems and devices? Any input is highly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance. Kind regardsGabriel

Answer:Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2012 drivers for T420s

You should be able to use most if not all of the Windows 7 drivers (on 2008R2) or the Windows 8 drivers (on 2012) directly. There's also an off chance you can use the 7 drivers on 2012 or the 8 drivers on 2008R2, but I doubt it.

I have a home server that I use for the following:

1) ASP.NET web development on IIS
2) Hyper-V guest instances (linux and win)
3) TFS 2010 instance

It also supports a couple other small things, like email server, FTP, file share, etc.

I have a MSDN license, so I have access to either OS, so cost is not an issue.

I'm curious manly about performance vs features. I understand some improvements to Hyper-V in 2012+. Frameworks I use, such as .NET 4.5.1 are still supported on 2008 R2, but no idea if newer versions will be supported (forcing me to move to 2012).

I'm also running this on an older (former workstation) PC, a C2D 2.4ghz with 8GB RAM.

Does anyone have insight? Thanks.

Answer:Rebuilding home server - Windows 2008 R2 or 2012 R2?

If you have no reason (cost, compatibility, etc) to stick with 2008 R2, I would go with 2012 R2. The only downside is the UI, which is much better than vanilla 2012. If you don't like it, then you can make things better with any of the start menu replacements.

I've got a 20 Node 2012 R2 Hyper-v Cluster hosting 250ish VMs, and it's rock solid.

Going on my 11th hour of trying to get this to work. This is x64 by the way. Needs to be 64 bit.

I've tried the Sun Installation Assistant, I've tried right from the Server 2008 DVD, and Server 2008 R2 DVD, nothing works.

Most common point of failure: Copying, Expanding and Installing features/updates completes, server restarts, immediately after restart I get the "Clock Interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval" BSOD.

Before this error the Server would simply lock up before it finished expanding files so I updated the BIOS and ILOM to the latest versions and now I'm stuck again with the above error.

Am I missing something? I have tried loading RAID drivers from my updated Tools and Drivers CD and from a floppy even though it only finds the LSI RAID card that isn't even in use. My RAID config is Adaptec mirrored 2x 73Gb SAS drives. According to all documentation, no drivers are even NEEDED for Server 2008.

Called Sun support but they can't get back to me until tomorrow morning. I kind of need this fixed now though.

Thanks in advanced !

Greetings,

We have a 2008 R2 Citrix server that shows -6 GMT (correct) when we RDP into the server on the same administrator account. We have been having problems with the server rebooting at the wrong time. When the datacenter techs login into the same administrator account, for them it shows that the timezone is set to -5 GMT (incorrect).

Same user account, same server, different timezones. Could someone explain this?

I can't activate Windows Server 2008 R2 downloaded from Dreamspark. Can anybody help?
I downloaded Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard from DreamSpark and also got the product key.
I tried to install the software on an empty disk. Right at the beginning of installation I am offered to install different versions of 2008, standard, enterprise, web. I chose Standard (Full Installation) and carried through the setup. Everything works fine until I try to activate the installation with the product key given by Dreamspark. At this point i get the following message:
"The present key you have entered will not work with this edition of Windows Server 2008 R2.
You must either run Windows Server 2008 R2 setup or enter a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard product key"
I find the message very weired as it seems that it tells me to install what I've already did, or the product key provided by dreamspark is wrong.
I should mention I tried to activate by phone, but they tell me the product ID is not right or sthg like that, and then I get thrown out the automated process.
I emaiedl dreamspark support 3 times ang got no reply. So now I am getting a bit desperate.
Anybody any ideas?
Many thanks
alex

Answer:Dreamspark and failure to activate windows server 2008 R2 Standard

hi !
how many keys did you get ?
and where did you download from, was it from www.dreamspark.com or from MSDNAA ?
i?m also having problems with keys from MSDNAA (now renamed to dreamspark), i get an errormessage saying: "the product key has already been used....."
so it looks like Microsoft has some "technical" problems regarding product keys.....
but there is no need for panic, you can use WS-2008-R2 in trialmode for a long time.
just use the "rearm-trick", then it runs for several months....

Hey there,

As often said...long time lurker. Recently installed a copy of WS2012 Datacenter I received to play with and learn more about. I have pretty much zero Windows Server background knowledge (I don't count WHS...which I have running as well).

So, my question...I created a Storage Pool, and then a couple Volumes, and then Shares.

My embarrassing noob question...how do I access these Shares?

I can locate the server on my network, and know the IP address of it.

I created a User account so that I don't need to use the Admin account for general use.

My goal:
Access the Share I created from my MacBook Air so that I can read/write files from it.

Thanks in advance for tolerating my WS "noobness."

Answer:Accessing Windows Server 2012 Server Pool Shares

Not sure how to access it from a mac, but on a windows box you can just run \\%servername%\%sharename% and it'll launch it in an explorer window. Should be some sort of network browser on the mac to allow you to type in the unc.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask for a help in hand here, but i'm having trouble tracking down the source of a problem. My dedicated server provider has informed me that 1 of my servers has been sending syn flood attacks to another one of my servers connected to the same router and has unplugged the network cable on it for now as a precaution.

I can still remote desktop to the machine to work on it though.

Here is what they sent me:
This was a flood of traffic between the following two IPs 174.*.*.218,
174.*.*.219 Mainly traffic from 174.*.*.218 to the 174.*.*.219. All
4096 packets, that are the limit for a capture on the router, were strictly
traffic to and from these two IPs, and mainly traffic from 174.*.*.218 to the
.219 IP. This traffic was causing the CPU on the router to spike, thus causing
packetloss on the device.

It would appear that the 174.*.*.218 server was
performing a syn attack to the server 174.*.*.219. As this traffic was
originating from a host on this router to another host on this router. Cisco
Guard would not have mitigated this issue.

---

Now I have done some tests with netstat -o to try and find any rouge applications but everything seems normal to me, I have done a scan with Avast server edition and also MalwareBytes to see if anything could be picked up but both came back clean.

Has anyone got any advice?

Paul

I have received a new windows 7 pro computer to replace my old windows xp computer. I have used the Windows easy transfer tool to move the files from my old computer to the new one. The old computer is still connected for the time being. I named the computer the same name and have the same password. I did an update from xp to windows 7 on another computer and it seemed to work fine using the same process. It connected to the server automatically. I would really like to have it where the computer is just a workstation on the network and anyone can sign in with any name and password. How do I do it?

Heroes Happen {Here} is what Microsoft calls the promotional tour for three of its 2008 products which will come to many cities in the United States this year. Users who attend a launch event will get a promotional kit of the three Microsoft products Windows Server? 2008 operating system, Microsoft? SQL Server? 2008, and Microsoft Visual Studio? 2008.
Not everyone can just walk in though and grab the copies, you need to register to be able to attend an event and even then kits will only be given out as long as supplies last. Events will also take place in other countries. A quick check revealed one event in Germany where attendees have to pay a fee to be able to attend the event. They still get the software kit with the newest versions of the applications though.
News Source: http://www.ghacks.net/2008/01/22/free-copies-of-windows-server-sql-server-and-visual-studio-2008/
You have to give a company name and job title during registration. It is unclear if Microsoft will reject applications if they do not meet certain criteria. The first event is on February 27th in Los Angeles, the last on May 22nd in Reston.

Answer:Can't connect to Server 2008 via Windows 7 Administration tools/Server Manager

Check Technet for the WinRM reference and or make sure that WinRM is enabled on the servers you are trying to access.

Use group policy to enable it if you need to do a bunch of machines at once. I'm using this with no problems.

I've got about 40 Senor Point of Sale tablets running Windows 7. They work just fine, but are failing to take Windows Update for Service Pack 1 (KB97632). The POS software is soon going to need this update in order for it to continue working.

I've deleted the Windows Update cache (SoftwareDistribution >> SoftwareDistribution.old) and nothing changed.

I've downloaded the update .exe and after it ran, nothing changed.

Check for Windows Updates only shows the SP1 update when I click to search online for updates, for what it's worth.

After the update has failed, I get error code 800736b3.

Apparently the billion and two solutions other people have aren't solutions for me.

Please help me!

Thanks in advance.

I'm looking at a small backup server for work and rather than mess with a seperate server and external array I'm thinking about getting a rack-mountable server with 8 hot-swappable bays.

Two bays will be occupied by the a pair of drives in RAID1 for the OS, leaving me 6 bays to stuff with terabyte drives. The actual capacity of 6 terabyte drives in RAID5 will be roughly 5.54TB.

Can Windows Server 2008 address a volume that large?

Answer:Max HDD volume size in Windows Server 2008?

Short answer: Yes, BUT ...

Long answer: ... you will have to use GPT, see: Windows and GPT FAQ

Unless you have a very specific reason that absolutely requires you to utilize volumes later than 2TB, there are very some reasons to not create such volumes. To mind come software support (i.e. some apps will not be able to recognize that volume), organizational consideration (IT may benefit from creating volumes for individual users/units), and probably some other reasons I can't think of right now.

I am going be moving all the shared folders on my Server 2003 file server to my new Server 2008 VM and want to do it in a way that will allow my clients to be able to access them as if nothing happened. I have been reading about the Windows FSMT (File Server Migration Toolkit) http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=10268 and it will copy over all the permissions and everything but I am not sure how to go about making sure the client will still be able to access the shares especially if they have mapped any of them. If i change the IP and host name of the new machine to the old one after the migration is complete and then shutdown the old server will everything run smoothly? What is the best way to go about doing this?

Answer:Migrate Server 2003 file server shares to new machine (Server 2008)

you can do this or you can change DNS so that the old server name points to the new server IP. You need to turn off StrictNameChecking

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters]
"DisableStrictNameChecking"=dword:00000001

this means that you can name the server what ever you want but if you go to the old host name it will also take you to the new server.

Don't forget this needs to be completed and rolled out after the users log off but before they log back in

As old user move on and new users join make sure that you link them to the share via the new host name so eventually the old host name is fased out and you can remove the above reg key.

Download Windows 10 Client Connector Update for Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 as it now available at Microsoft.

Windows Server Essentials Connector is software that helps you connect your PC or Mac client to Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Windows Server Essentials Experience server role enabled. It also enables and manages key client-side functionality of Windows Server Essentials Experience. On a PC, it provides client backup, a tray icon and the Launchpad, the Dashboard for management of remote servers, and a VPN profile with the capability of auto-dialing and monitoring client health from the server side. On a Mac, it provides health monitoring and the Launchpad.

Get it from Microsoft here.

We had:

1) 1 Windows Server 2003 running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 workstations.

We now want to have:

1) 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 same workstations, with their same user profiles.

So I joined the 2008 R2 server to the domain, and then used the dcpromo tool to make it a domain controller.

Problem is, whenever I take the old server offline, (the 2003 one) everything flips out, logons are slow, and the 2008 server gives people trying to access shared files weird errors like that the server that authenticated them cannot be contacted, and asks them to log in again with their username and password before accessing shared files on the server.

What did I do wrong? I must be forgetting something.

Hi guys,

What free Antivirus software for servers?
What free anti-malware would NOT be a good idea?

Info:
My friend has purchased a Poweredge server to act as a fileserver for a private network not connected to the internet..  He uses 2 laptops at the most  to access files on the server.

However at some points he will update Windows Server 2008 plus odd bits by temporaily hooking up to the Internet., and obviously leave himself open to malware etc. for a short time.

The cost of server Antivirus is very high and usually effective for 10 workstations upwards, and obviously he would appreciate keeping costs down.

Questions:
I would appreciate thoughts on ideas for avoiding a costly solution.

Also, if he got Malware on it (e.g. Rootkit or Delta) would current Bleeping Computer tools (e.g. Rkill, RogueKiller etc) still work on the server - or does it require another approach?

I am asking fior advice BEFORE he gets started while options are open.

Thanks in advance guys

Answer:Free Server Antivirus ? e.g. for Windows Server 2008

The answer is fairly simple. Just read the details on the site -
Microsoft Security Essentials is available for small businesses with up to 10 PCs.

• Microsoft Security Essentials:
Microsoft updated it’s free Anti-Virus solution at the end of 2010 to support Windows 2008/R2.
This is easily one of the better free offerings as Microsoft has updated this solution to complete directly with some of the biggest solutions, such as Mcafee and Symantec paid versions.

When downloading, simply choose Windows Vista / Windows 7, as Microsoft has yet to update the website.http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

I have a file server at home with a Quad core, 4gb ram, and a 3tb of storage. It is running Ubuntu Desktop and sharing video files primarily. From my school I have access to a free copy of Windows Server 2008 R2. Other than the server I have 2 Windows 7 desktops, 1 Windows 7 laptop and 1 Windows Vista laptop.

I am interested in moving to a Windows setup as I am done with the ?Ubuntu? experiment. WHS looks like what I need, but I have a free copy of WS 2008 and I would miss the $50 for WHS. My goals can be described best as:

Need to Haves:
? File/media server (local network)
? Dedicated game server for various games for friends.
? Print server

Nice to Haves:
? Music/Video Streaming over the internet
? Automatic backup server
? File server over the internet
? Ability to manager other PC?s from the server

My ability as an admin:
? No experience
? Willing to learn and put forth initial effort to get setup
? Don?t have time to really spend more than 1 day moving from Ubuntu to the new setup.
? Don?t want to be stuck constantly screwing with things to get it right or keep it running.

What is going to be best option for my situation?

Answer:Help choose: Windows Home Server 2011 vs. Windows Server 2008 R2

Honestly, I use both in their proper settings, and unless you have a domain at home with multiple users, Windows Server 2008 R2 is overkill...and would require much more tweaking and add-in apps to do what you want. Given your write-up, WHS 2011 is the way to go. It does much of what you want out of the box, and is designed for people who don't want to become server admins (or at least not be forced to).

Hello,

I have a very frustrating problem. I want to use Windows 2008 R2 Terminalserver with Outlook 2016.
Unfortunately every time a user starts Outlook, he installs the 64 bit Components. It seems there is one solution: Installing Windows Search Role and starting Outlook in Installation Mode.
Seems to work. With that solution, there is another problem: It is not possible to search in pst-files. Windows error log says event ID 3036. Looks like, Windows Search cannot index pst-files (in network). The possible solution to disable indexing for Outlook
does not work because the configuration change got reseted after relogin. This might happen because of our Roaming users.
As you can see, I have one problem. When Windows Search is installed, pst-files are not searchable. When Windows Search is not installed, Outlook 64 bit Components get installed every start of Outlook.

Is there anybody who has other ideas for a solution?

Thank you for your help.

Jens

Server has been great and online for about 7 months without issue.  Three times over the last two weeks, all clients' mapped drives just drop and Windows Explorer hangs...  I am not able to disconnect drives via command prompt, nor remap drives
via command prompt.  However, I can ping the server and remote desktop to the server perfectly.  No errors in logs on workstations or server.  Affects all workstations (60+ running Windows 7 Pro) simultaneously.  Client mappings to
other servers (Windows 2008 R2) running on the same switch are unaffected.  Reboot the 2012 server and you can reconnect to mapped drives by clicking on them in Windows Explorer.  Any ideas?

So, I really like Windows Home Server a lot, but I want to use a domain with Windows Server 2008. What kind of software could I use (third party, Microsoft) to get the functionality of WHS? I'm looking at the media streaming and easy backups for all client users. I can do remote access using VNC, so that's not a problem. And I know of software that can make the library online (as a web server).

Would my best option to make the Server 2008 a web server and just put a page on there to stream the music that way (as well as shared folders for the XBox)? And what software can do effecient backups similar to WHS?

Thanks!

Answer:Server 2008 -> Windows Home Server

Why not just use 2008 server as a file server
- shares for the Xbox
- web page for the music (although you can use shares as well)

theres all sorts of backups you can do.
Acronis backing up to the server autmatically
NTBackup backing up files/folders to the server
- all those should work fine on server 2008

Are the computers going to be part of the domain too?
XBox would probably need some sort of user/pass to access a domain server

Ok I am lost. Could someone please give me a simple way of setting up my Windows 2008 R2 server to allow me to FTP into it from my local network and will allow me to FTP from outside my local network? I am new to the Windows server 2008 system. I previously tooled around with Server 2003 so I am more or less lost in this area. If someone could tell me how to configure it such as what feature and roles need to be installed and what settings need to be in place.

I'm trying to decide between Windows Home Server and Windows Server 2008 R2 for my home server PC. Ordinarily it would be a clear cut choice, but I've got a free copy of Server 2008 R2 through my academic MSDN subscription. I'd like to avoid spending extra money if Server 2008 R2 would do the job. But I'm willing to buy Home Server should it prove necesary. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Windows home server vs Server 2008 R2

Server 2008 R2 is a more fully functional product. You will be able to do similar things, but it might be a little more involved getting it set up and working. Plus, if you are interested in IT, you could use the Server 2008 R2 experience....but you won't get hired for your knowledge on Windows Home Server.

My vote is Server 2008 R2 without a doubt.

I've been reading that the Windows Server Backup that is included with Server 08 R2 is pretty good. Is spending $400 on a third party utility worth it?

I'm asking because we're purchasing a new server soon and I want to know if the included backup is going to be good enough. Will be backing up server state as well as data to tape and possibly an off site server (server 2003) if I get my way.

Thanks

Hi all
Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / W7 mix) and file / print sharing.

I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.

(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).

The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.

I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".

I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.

It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).

I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.

Incidentally as a HOME server there ... Read more

from my MSDN subscription i can get a copy of server 2008. (x86 or x64)

but i was toying with the idea of windows home server.

it will be going onto a 3600X2 on a k9agm2 with 2 gig of ram in my sig (which you cant see!) as i retire the old fileserver and upgrade the development box.

It will need to run SQL server 2008 (low load) and a couple of asp.net websites. as well as the families Media sharing, Document sharing and backups

i like the simplicity of WHS buti'm not bothered about the configuration of server 2008 either,

i really like the idea as hard drives appearing as one pool.

question is is the simplicity wortth the £100 for WHS and can i do everything i need to on WHS

Answer:windows home server or Server 2008

It is insane how much system requirements for Windows servers are now. I setup a 266mzh overclocked Nslug for a client office. They only have five users. It runs Debian like a champ. Another Nslug is handling OpenVPN at 266mhz. They only eat 5 watts each.

If Windows is only option, I would go with 2008. Windows Home servers have so many issues.

This is my home server I use for DLNA, backup, main storage, and streaming:
Windows server 2008 R2
Intel Core i5 3570k
asus P8z77-i Deluxe
4x Samsung f4 2tb
LSI megaraid 9260-4i
8gb Samsung 30nm ddr3
40gb Intel 320 SSD(boot)
60gb Corsair Force GT(windows server 8)
500gb Seagate Momentus(temp install files)

Originally the server had x4 635 amd processor etc and I had a perc 5i card in there and my server worked great, I had no issues at all nor when I upgraded again to i7 2600k server and threw down a megaraid lsi card in there. I was able to transfer with ease and got extremely high copy rates etc. and of course streaming was flawless.

Now that I've upgrade my system(just a week ago) I've been stressing on trying to get my system to what I had before. I CANNOT copy ANY files from or to the server through mapped drives which I mainly use to access the server itself; streaming, storage, etc. I'll get a copy popup and it'll transfer at 16.kbs and even though the file was 1meg> it simply freezes.

Accessing the mapped drive has been a nightmare, requiring me to wait minutes before being able to enter folders or even open up files becomes worst; I cannot even stream a 7meg Mp3 at all. Before I streamed my entire library of music directly off the server and had no issues at all.

I've tried: swapping routers(wndr3700-r6300) both gigabit, cat 5e/6 cable swaps, disabled netsh autotuninglevel etc, reinstalling windows server, and updating all hardware etc.

I recently decided to play with the Server OS's again, I have been mostly using XP Pro for these functions, since its a local server, and mostly just used for file sharing, and as a download box (anti virus updates, etc).

Should I look into Windows Home Server or Windows Server 2008.

I have access to both OS's, just need to choose one.

Also will my legacy Windows XP Apps, work on either one? Thanks.

So I am aware that a single Server 2012 license is good for a single physical install or two VM installations. What I'm curious about though is the combinations and how they identify themselves as virtual or physical.

Scenario 1: If I use License A for a physical install, can I then use that license to run two more VMs using Hyper-V installed on License A's physical install or can I use it ONLY for the physical install?

Scenario 2: If I use License A for a physical install, then install two VMs using License B, how does License B operating systems know they are virtual allowing the use of the key twice and can License B be used for two VMs running concurrently?

Scenario 3: If I choose to use a "third party" VM software provider such as VMware's ESXi, will the operating systems properly identify themselves still as being virtual installations and allow two VMs to run, if running two concurrently is possible?
I am currently planning a complete overhaul of a small network that has a single DC, exchange server, and file server hosting roughly 30 concurrent users. The current DC and exchange server are dual core machines that are overtaxed and eating into the page file for normal usage operations. The file server is a monster 12-core, 64GB RAM behemoth with 6 NICs that is doing nothing but file services for the local site. I am wanting to use VMs to utilize those resources but need to understand the VM licensing properly.

Answer:Server 2012 VM License Usage

A lot of this depends on the version of Server you have. It sounds like you have standard so...

Scenario 1: You can only use it for the physical install.

Scenario 2: They don't know they are virtual, it's an honor system (for the most part).

Scenario 3: See Scenario 2.

Typically the most cost effective licensing scheme is buying Datacenter edition. This lets you run unlimited instances of Windows on each host.

So for example, you have three physical hosts, but want to have 120 VM's (running windows server). You would buy three datacenter editions and you're covered.

Activation isn't nearly as smart as you're making it out. It's for the most part an honor system, of course, if you get audited you better be in compliance.

Fresh build of server 2012 R2.
Ran windows updates 3 times and it's current on it's updates.

Installed Office 2016. When I go to start Word or Excel, I get -
the program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-heap-l1-1-0.dll is missing.
Microsoft says that KB2999226 needs to be installed. Go to install it and the message is that it's not applicable for this system.
MS also says to install C++ redist 2015 on the system. I did that and got an error message on the install. Reboot, run the install again and select repair and it can't repair it.

Short of wiping the server and re-installing the OS and other software I've installed on it, I'm stuck.

Any ideas?

Answer:Server 2008 will not activate.

Hmmm - try this (since it's Vista-based...)

The problem appears to be in the Licensing Store -
please try the following.....

Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.

1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Restart your computer twice.

You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).

Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

Server OS Windows Server 2012 Essentials
Client OS: Windows 7 Professional

I recently upgraded from Home Server 2011 to Essentials 2012. This required me to create a Domain which I did, and the other PC's connect with no problem. Using the same procedure to connect my main machine, and it does not see any other computers that are in the domain when I go to network places, not even the server. I have checked that the primary DNS is pointing to 2012 Essentials server. I can connect to the other PCs by manually typing in the other PC names.

Another problem is that I cannot access the shared folders in the Dashboard. I log in as an administrator and have checked permissions. When I try to access these shared folders it gives me the access denied message.

Does anyone know what is going on with these two problems?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:One client not seeing other computers in the Domain. Client OS Win7, Server OS 2012

I didn't use 2012 Essentials yet - only regular 2012 and domain is working without any problem.
Main thing is that client pc must have dns connected to server - on server you can set forwarding for external internet access.
If you have problems with domain you could try rejoin to domain on client PC - you'll verify then that everything is configured properly - I can recommend tool called Profile Wizard http://www.forensit.com/Profwiz/ It's great for rejoining to domain or when you want to switch to other domain without lose your profile.
Maybe Dasboard require for local administrator privileges to work properly ?

We run a web proxy server on our network for internet access.
On client machines (running Windows 2012 R2) I have configured the proxy server setting in Internet Explorer "Tools\Internet Settings\Connections\LAN Settings" to point at the designated web proxy server.
When attempting to browse websites from IE I receive the "The proxy server isn't responding" error.
Conversely, browsing the same sites via Google Chrome and Firefox (installed on the same client server) return web pages without error.
In addition, if I run Internet Explorer as administrator (Right Click\Run as Administrator), I am able to browse web sites without receiving the error.
It would appear that the issue is isolated to browsing via IE when not run in elevated mode.
Has anyone come across this issue?

Hi Dicki,
First, please try to reset the Internet Explorer. Some plug-ins may affect the proxy.
If it doesn't work, please try to perform a network capture on the client.
Please check if the client send the http traffic to the proxy server at the correct port.
If the client has sent the http traffic to the proxy server, please check if there is any warning or error in the proxy server.

I'm experimenting with implimenting this and am having a few issues.

When I install a print device and deploy with GPO, it works great.

When I update the driver on the server to a newer version using the 'new driver' button, I have issues. It prompts the user saying they need to install the driver. If you choose to install, it prompts for administrator credentials, which obviously negates the whole point of centralized management.

If I remove the printer from deployment, delete it and the driver, then add it again with an older version driver, and redeploy, the clients are still using the newer driver (sometimes I have reasons to roll back print drivers).

One thing I did notice is the driver is not listed as a package, where the default stuff by Microsoft is. I don't know if that makes a difference. If it is, how can I create the package? Do I have to use WDS or something similar?

So, what am I doing wrong when I'm changing the drivers that it won't automatically deploy the new driver without user intervention? Also, if there is no way to force the change, is there a way to force client stations to delete the old driver without getting into a bunch of scripting (I don't care for it).

Hi,

I am having an issue with offline files created offline syncing back to the server. I have set up a network share to be available offline on a client computer. All files are available offline without issue. Here is the issue however. If I set the folder to work offline any file I create in the folder when it is offline just disappears when the folder comes back online, there are no conflicts or sync failures reported in sync center. If I create a new folder offline the folder does sync back to the server. Any changes made to an existing file are also replicated back to the server once the share is back online. So the issue is only with newly created files when the share is offline. I have not been able to replicate this error on any other file server in our environment, However I have recreated the issue with multiple shares with multiple Win 7 clients on this file server.

Steps taken so far.

Checked and reset permission levels on the share.
Recreated new shares from scratch for testing.
Disabled and enabled offline files on the client computer and cleared the offline cache.
Check various registry entry settings.
Disabled cashing on the File server.
Tested with XP the issue does not exist with XP.

I have spent hours researching this error online to no avail.

The clients are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit
The File server is Server 2003 Standard 32 bit with SP2

Any help or ideas would be most welcome.

I've seen the complaints about this problem but with no clear resolution. There are some hot fixes listed that may help, updating to Windows 7 SP1 is supposed to help in some cases but nothing seems for certain.

No way for me to recreate this problem but apparently others have the same problem.

Hi, I have a remoteapp published (via RDP file) from a 2012r2 server. All is well testing with Win7 client computers. Now I need to select thin clients to run this app, but am struggling with what will or won't work. t410, t510, t610?Which OS? Thinpro, and FreeRDP, or WES 7 or 8? A pointer to a "product selector" would be awesome ;-). But failing that, any recommendation or discussion is appreciated.

Answer:Thin Client selection for server 2012 r2 remoteapp

Personally, I suggest WES8, as it provides the support of latest version of RDP client.

I migrated my home server from whs 2011 to Server 2012 r2 a couple weeks ago and have been dealing with what I assume is a side effect of being on a domain now.

If I'm on my computer working, and leave it idle long enough that the monitor goes to sleep, as soon as I wake the monitor again the computer is on the lock screen and I need to log in. I can disable this by changing my power options so that I don't require a password on wakeup, but I would prefer to still require a password when I wake the actual computer from sleep.

Anyone know if I can change or disable this feature?

Answer:Server 2012 domain client constant logging out.

Change the power settings so the computer does not idle to sleep after 30 minutes. You can still manually put it in sleep mode when you are done using it.

Ok, so after a long time working fine, my desktops stopped backing up.

So, as recommended by the TN Article for Client Backup issues, I started the Database Repair Utility in the Dashboard.

It starts, and after a while it fails and says it fails due to an unknown problem. I click the link it provides to find help, and it dumps me in the generic Server2012E page. I've not been able to find any help on this issue.

Any idea's ?

I also ran a SFT /Scannow on the server. The last time I had a client backup issue this fixed it.

Exact Error Wording:

Backup repair did not complete.
An unknown error prevented the backup repair process from starting. Make sure that all services are running then try again.

The services I know to check are indeed running.

I am going to be upgrading a Server 2003 domain and Exchange server 2003 to Server 2008 and Exchange server 2010. We have one main DC and one backup DC along with another Server 2003 machine running Exchange.

Can anyone point me to some good how-to's or instructions for doing this? This is a small organization, about 40-50 clients total.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:How to migrate Server/Exchange 2003 to Server 2008

I'm in the same boat at work. I have about 120 clients and I'm taking the approach of building of building a new AD domain and installing exchange as a new organization in the new domain. From there I plan on exporting the mailboxes and importing them to the new exchange server. At this point I haven't decided how I'm going to export the mailboxes, probably have to exmerge the mail store to PST's or use Powershell if I can extract the old mail store from the new Exchange server.

Im running into issues with a Terminal Server I setup. We migrated from a Terminal Server running on Server 2003, to a new server running Server 2008. All of our applications are running just fine in the new 64 bit OS, however my users want to use Firefox on it, but we are having a lot of issues with it. Firefox installs fine, and you can browse web sites with it, but anytime you try to browse the filesystem on the server it freezes. If I try to just do a file open, once it brings up the filesystem the browser freezes. This is important, as we need to import SSL certificates into it for our users to be able to access certain resources. Has anyone seen this, or have any suggestions on how to fix it. I have tried to uninstall, reinstall different versions, they all seem to be doing it.

Ok so here's the deal:

2008 domain
GPP extension on all clients

Old server:
2003 32bit
has ~150 network printers
old name

New server:
2008 x64
cannot have same name as old server

My questions:

Since I can't use Print Migrator 3.1 (from 2003 to 2008 x64) can I install the new printers on the new server without conflicting with the old printers/server? If so I should just be able to roll the new printers out via GPP to each respective OU, right? Any advice on removing the old printers from the clients? It's 4-500 clients so I can't touch each one physically. I'm aware I will need x64 drivers when installing on the server then will need to manually add the 32bit drivers during each install (on the server).

Any advice would be appreciated. I've migrated 20-30 printers but never 150 off one server before.

Answer:Advice for print server cutover? (Server 2008 x64)

From my experience you can add the printers on any server without conflict. They are basically just "there" and people can connect to them if they want to. So you should be able to set up the printers on the new server without issue.

I don't know much about removing the existing printers from the client machines, especially with GPP. I have to brush up on my GPP skills as well as upgrade my functional domain level.

I was researching a script to delete all printers when the clients logged in and got it working, but never used it other than testing.

Hey guys,

We are running an MSSQL 2005 Server with a clients database on it. The client uses a developer in India who is using SQL 2008 Server Management Studio. When he tries to connect to our 2005 Server, he gets an error. We have downloaded and reproduced the error and it appears to be a problem with 2008 studio trying to connect to a 2005 server. I have asked the developer to move to a different version of Studio, but for the future I was wondering if anyone here knew of any kind of fix for this at all?

Answer:SQL 2008 Server Management Studio and SQL 2005 Server

they expect everyone to upgrade their entire infrastructure and clients to the new version the very second they come out simultaneously, thats why
