Preferred Solution: Dell XPS 9550 Black Screen, no Dell logo after failed Windows 10 Update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a problem with my new laptop and it happens only sometimes. It is around 1 month old and it had this problem from the beginning . The laptop is a DELL INSPIRON 3552
1. DELL LOGO appears
2. Screen backlight is ok
3. Windows won't start ( window's logo doesn't appear ) and if i plug an external mouse the cursor is on the black screen.
If I shut down the laptop from the power button and the start it again it works. It's very random. Once I had to restart the laptop for 3 times before the windows started.
Any ideas ?

Thank you for writing to us!
As we understand that the system doesnt not boot and just goes up to the Dell logo and after multiple restarts the system works fine.
In that case ,Can you boot the system into " Safe mode " and check if the same happens..You can also perform a system restore and also check for updates pending .

When I powered up my new dell xps 15 9550 this morning, (bought less than 1 week ago) I had a message from Dell in the bottom right hand corner of the screen saying there was a firmware update notification. I clicked on this and proceeded to update the firmware.
since this, I have been suffering from the screen going blank and the only way to get it back on again is to switch off the laptop completely!
I have restored the bios to factory settings (F2) and have also tried disabling the nvdia video card but still have the same problem of the intermittent screen going black.
At the same time, if I am listening to music, the music also switches off, so it doesn't appear to be just a video card problem.
It all appears to point to this firmware update?!
any help would be much appreciated.

Answer:Dell XPS 15 9550 screen going black intermittently after Dell firmware install this morning help!

I have the same problem:

I initially reported that my XPS 15 locks-up displaying an all white display, however, I have since noticed it locking-up with a black display or gray display. Recycling power is the only way to get the computer working again. Prior to an automated firmware update, my XPS had been working fine. If you find a solution, please post it. I will do the same.

Dell N5030: W7 wont start. Dell logo > black screen. How to restore?

Hello friends

Please could you advise me. My friend has asked me to help with her Dell N5030 Inspiron laptop. She has had it for about just over a year now. Dual-core Pentium, 4GB RAM, W7 64bit. She is not computer savvy and I dont know how shes managed to do this but heres the problem:

1. You press the power button
2. The Dell logo appears along with the F2 & F12 options for Setup & Boot Options
3. This is followed by a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left. Thats it.

All this happens in the space of 6 seconds (power-up to black screen). Nothing else happens, no Windows logo screen, no Microsoft logo, nothing. Screen stays black with the cursor and the laptop instantly turns off when I press the power button.

My friend was desperate because she had over 740 family photos and some important documents she didnt want to lose. I was able to recover all of those using a Linux Mint live CD so at least shes all smiles for that

Using Mint made me realize that the hardware was working perfectly. The hard drive was good, no mem faults and of course the optical drive was fine. So its something with Windows 7.

Also while using Mint I could clearly see the Dell Recovery Partition. The problem is I dont know how to get the Inspiron to fire it up - because I cannot even get into Safe Mode where the "Repair your computer" option is.

When I pressed F12 al... Read more

My old Dell Dimension 8400 P4 starts to boot but the screen goes black after the Dell Logo. The power was accidentally shut off on the power strip that the computer is connected to and after I turned the computer back on, this problem occured. I ran a computer diagnostic, I have tried to get to the screen to allow me to boot in safe mode by pushing F8 but when I do that I get a message that the keyboard has an error.

Please help if you can.

Thank you,

On the Monday July 26th i was hit with a virus bomb with 4 types of rogue software, a bunch of trojan and including a smitfraud-c. I got rid of these viruses, but I accidently wiped a section that i supposed to not touch. Apon rebooting my system i get a dell bios loading screen then just black.

I tried to go to safe mode it shows the files loading, but it won't go to the windows screen. I have a installation cd for windows but some of the files won't load properly. i tried making a CD-RW copy on my reinstallation for windows, but my disk won't read 4 files.

If a repair install did not help, probably your best bet is a clean install. You can take the drive out to salvage any data you cherish that is not backed up.

So my Dell XPS 9550 has been getting these random black screen moments just when ever it feels like it, it seems. The screen will turn black but the keyboard will light up when I push on them. The power button still has its light on as well as the light on my charger if i'm still using it. If I am listening to music, the music will freeze as well and I can hear it skipping. The only way I can fix it is by turning it on and off, only for it to happen again a couple of hours later. I have already called dell technical support and haven't found any solutions. I have read about some people having to get their motherboard replaced but i'm hoping its not gonna be that serious of a problem. Any Ideas?

I have a XPS 15 9550 UHD, 1TB SSD and using the laptop without major problems for 15 days. Today I have tried to boot into safe mode for windows and pressed the fn+F8 button randomly on the start. It didn't work and i have retried the boot. But right now the the screen is always black, no signs of any Dell Logo or bios login. I can see that there is power on the notebook, fans are working, there is lights on the keyboard but the screen is black and there is absolutely no signs of boot. I also have press and hold the FN + Power button. It didn't work. I have tried everything but its not booting. What could be wrong here? I removed battery and again plug in the battery, but facing the same issue. By the way, I purchased this laptop 15 days ago from Pakistan is it dead or still hope for repair??

Waiting for your kind response..

I've been using my Dell XPS 15 9550 for a couple of months now and everything was fine, i decided to connect it to an external monitor P2715Q through a Dell WD15 Type-C docking station, which working fine except for having the Monitor at 30Hz versus 60Hz. i've been facing alot of Blue Screen Errors, and one day found there was a firmware update for the Docking Station, the Monitor went blank and found the firmware was updating usually when i startup my laptop and it's connected to the docking station it gives me a warning message about the power being less than 60W so i unplugged the Type C cable connecting the dock to  the Laptop mid installation, it rolled back and i then figured i shouldn't have disconnected it. This morning i connected my dock as usual but it wasn't being recognized it's as if the Type C wasn't reading the Dock, i connected a Type C to Display port cable direct to the monitor to check if it was the port but that worked instantly, please help what should i do?

I bought my 9550 (i5/4k/256gb/8gb) on Feb 6 from the Microsoft Store. It suffered from some black screen issues, even after updating everything fully, BIOS, Intel/Nvidia drivers etc.
The past week, a new development has occurred. The laptop goes to black screen and a loud buzzing noise emits from the speakers. It's not the usual coil whine but a really loud buzzing sound. This happened once when I was watching a short video on Facebook, and again when I was watching a video on Youtube, both times using the laptop's speakers. It has crashed to a black screen before while watching YT but without the buzzing noise (I was using headphones), this is new.  I have checked that everything has been updated, and it has, yet this is happening.
I'm past my return date, and surely all the force shut-downs I have to do because of the black screen can't be good for the laptop. I hate that I can't even watch a video without fear of my laptop black screening and making me force reboot. Why should I have anxiety over using something I just bought and paid so much for! Really frustrating laptop. Just another problem on top of all the others it has had.

When I attempt to start my laptop it goes to the Dell logo screen and will not boot Windows 8. Any suggestions?
I've had the computer less than a month and if I have to restore the system completely it will not cause much of a problem.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Answer:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

I'm assuming the system is on windows 10....
I'd suggest you try to get system to boot into the Recovery Repairs screen. At the Dell logo screen, turn off your computer using the hard reset /power button. Keep turning the computer on and off until you see your PC booting into the Recovery Repairs Option screen, see image below. It should only take a few reboots.

So yeah, my Dell M1710 laptop that I've had for not quite a year is a paper weight right now. Basically it locked up on several noresponsive programs and I lost both my taskbar, start menu and all of the items of my desktop. Now this has happened before, when a folder or something becomes unresponsive, but it usually came back after a second. This time, however it didn't so I was forced to improprerly shut the system down by holding down the "Off" button (because the default function for single pressing that button is "Sleep" for Vista) and waiting for it to switch off.

Now this is where I ran into problems. I booted the system back up, but instead of speedily loading through the big DELL logo and the beginning of the process like it normally does, it chugged through it very slowly. Once it got to the end, I got a completely unresponsive black screen. I hit the power button and noted that it shut off with a single press. Click.

I've tried going into the Boot menu and the Setup menu, but neither one actually appear once the DELL logo finishes loading the BIOS. It just stops on a blank, black screen with no way for me to even reinstall the operating system. Am I screwed?

Edit: Resposting this in the "Windows Vista" board, so feel free to delete.

Dell precision m2400
Originally,  Windows screen went to the plain green background without files etc so I quickly turned it off.
Now there is a blank screen after the Dell logo.
So far I have tried only running each of the drives individually without success. I have run a Bios scan which after running resulted in this message "No diagnostic utility partition identified". I have taken out the battery and adapter and restarted.
The f8 key does not bring up any options.
Help! Thanks

We would suggest you check if the Harddrive is detected in BIOS .
Use the link to run online diagnostics on the system and the user manual should help .
Is there a blinking cursor on the top left had corner of the screen . This could be a hard drive or a hardware failure .
Kindly private message the service tag and email address.

my dell desktop has been booting to the xp logo with the green bars cycling throgh then when xp should start booting up it turns black and has the mouse in the middle of the screen.
this problem occured a while back but needed less power cycles to get the computer to start up to windows XP. now it practically will not start and i can only use this computer on safemode..
when, after 20 power cycles, yesterday i got it to start up correctly but then suddenly a screen with a weird language took over the screen. I hit CTRL ALT Delete but the screen took over again.. I kept hitting CRL ALT DELETE several times until i could end the proccess called IEXPLORER which seemed to take that screen away and the computer seemed normal and operational.

I've set "uefi ipv4 boot" in first boot sequence on my bios. Since this modification, my computer can't start. I got a black screen before the Dell logo. I've tried to do a bios reset by removing the CMOS battery but nothing changes. I've tried to unplug the HDD, the ram and the CD player but nothing works. When I try to start the computer without ram, it make some bip noises. The BIOS is up to date and I've made a diagnostic from the bios menu one day before the bug, and the diagnostic was OK. Ive tried to press all the functions keys at startup (f1, f2, etc...). I've started to press escape, control, delete, but nothing worked. I've tried to plug a bootable USB key but nothing... I own a E6420 which I intended to rejuvenate a bit, by replacing the HDD by a SSD.
I replaced the HDD by the SSD but the SSD was not recognised by the bios. Hence I entered the BIOS and tried to change the SATA setting from RAID to ATA.
Oops. Very. Wrong. Move.
The laptop hasn't booted ever since. The dell logo shows, but when the progress bar is complete I only get a black screen. If I try to press F2 or F12, the upper right message shows (entering setup...) but the freeze happens anyway, usually with the upper part of the screen being black and the lower part still showing the remains of the dell logo.
What have I tried? Many boot tries:
- with the old HDD
- without any hard disk at all
- without any disk (no HD, no optical)
- with or without the battery...
- with a bootable Windows install DVD in the optical drive
- with a bootable USB diag stick made with
All this with no avail.
I've also tried to clear the BIOS settings (going back to factory settings seems a good idea) by unplugging the cell coin battery. (and yes I did it by the book, with the power button down during many seconds sequence). After re-plugging the cell coin battery, the boot sequence is longer before the logo appearance (and funny enough, just plugging back the laptop starts it), but the end of the story remains the same. Pressing F12 gets to half logo freeze. Period.

this older dell computer had a fake windows security virus on it. I managed to get MBAM to work and it cleared it off...i thought.

the next day the display color was all wrong, my wife was playing solitaire and said some cards where missing, then it froze. the only way to shut it down was a hard boot. when it came back up, after the dell logo it was just a black screen. I tried to go into safe mode, and all i got was a black screen with a little white cursor line in the top left corner. none of the other options worked at all. for instance if i tried to go back to the last good configuration...nothing just black screen.

after spending the day reading I got the computer to boot from a disc and load a version of puppy linux. and got it back online..

now I am turning to you guys and your vast knowledge...

I imagine that that virus corrupted a file somewhere, and now windows will not boot. I saw several posts that claimed that the file can be repaired and windows will work again, however there was not much information on the steps for the repair. While I can deal with using linux this computer is used mostly by my kids, and they are used to windows.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't think this came with a restore disk when we bought it from Dell.

Hi everyone, I took delivery of a 9550 (32Gb, 4k) 2 weeks ago. Did all the usual updates - only problem was the flickering screen, which I see is due to be fixed in a later BIOS update. Then 2 days ago, I got the win10 anniversary update. Since then, the 2 times I've turned it on from cold, it's sat at the dell logo & never booted windows. Both times I've been able to fix it by going into the BIOS, not changing anything, but saving & restarting. Then it boots fine. I found some older posts from people with these kinds of problems, but I wasn't sure whether those issues were still present in the latest BIOS (1.2.10), which I've got, or if I had some other issue. It seems odd that it only happened after the anniversary update, but it would be equally strange for the anniversary update to affect a cold boot but not a reboot.Any ideas?

This is my first time posting here. Please forgive my ignorance, as I'm super not tech-savvy at all.

I'm going to try to explain what's going on as best as I can to see if anyone can throw me a bone here.

I have a Dell Inspiron 531, about 4 years old, and it's worked just fine up until yesterday.

I plugged my Canon camera into the front USB port to grab some photos off of it, when my computer froze. I had to hold down the power button to get it to shut off.

I restarted, and found that after the Dell logo comes up, the screen goes black except for a white cursor that flashes in the upper right hand corner. This has been going on since last night.

The only two options it gives me appear during the Dell logo screen when I can hit either F12 for the boot menu or F2 for startup menu. Once the screen goes black and I see that cursor, key punching does nothing.

I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning but, at one point, I somehow found myself at a memory diagnostics menu and it ran and found no errors but then froze at 99%. I have no idea how I was able to do that, and I can't find it again.

Sorry if I left out any info. Anyone have an idea on what I can do to start troubleshooting?

Answer:Black screen with flashing cursor in upper corner after Dell logo

Have you tried unplugging everything from the computer except for mouse and keyboard?

You may attempt a Startup Repair

Are you able to boot into safe mode? Safe Mode

If you have another computer, you can burn Memtest to a disk and run memory diagnostics.

Hi Dell Community - Any assistance would be most welcome.  Our 660S will only power up, fans running, dvd spins and lights checking for dvd, but no Dell logo, just a black screen.  I have done a Hard reset, I have removed the CMOS battery, replaced it with a new one after leaving it out overnight and powered up, same result, no Dell logo, just black screen.
I have tried F2 and also F12 during power up but can't get to any self diagnostic tools or reset or adjust bios.
Just now, after working on this for 2 days, it gave me a beep code of 5 counts with the power button flashing yellow.  I checked the CMOS battery again and restarted, no beeps, black screen, fans still run, but it powered itself off after roughly a minute and then powered back up right away and same black screen.
Any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks in advance!

Answer:660S Inspiron will power up, no post, no dell logo, just black screen

5 beeps = Real Time Clock failureBut you have replaced the CMOS battery. Possible motherboard failure. Try this, remove all memory modules and then power on. You should get 2 beeps. Are you using the onboard Intel GPU or an added discrete video card?

Hi Guys,
Good Morning, I updated my Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Laptop from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro by using Store Application.
After Waiting for almost 6 hours, Update was done and after Windows setup, Display was black, Cursor was blinking.....I checked in Microsoft website and i found that not only me and many Dell customers are facing the same issue. i was luckily able to boot to safe mode and i uninstalled the both of my video drivers and i am back to my windows 8.1. After i update my video drivers as mentioned in the link below, still my screen blacks out. So i had no other option than resetting my pc to windows 8 pro.
Video Driver Link :
When i was checking for latest driver for Intel Graphics & AMD Radeon that supports windows 8.1, I am able to find a driver in dell website. why it's not yet updated in the corresponding product driver list.... Actually i think these are the fix. I am not sure.
If any one has updated and i need a dell support for this

Answer:Black Screen after Windows 8.1 Update in Dell Inspiron 15R 5537

Hi Guys,
After so much for research, I was able to figure it out the problem is because of Intel Video Driver. There is a beta Intel video driver package which supports Windows 8.1. Try to update that package and post your results. As i have already rolled back to windows 8. It will take atleast 4-6 hours for me to update the status. The link is below for Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Model. and Install Intel HD Graphics 4400 Driver ver You have to follow the link as this driver is not yet uploaded in Dell Drivers & Downloads (refered in Dell Post)

Hi Friends,
I have an old Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 (purchased in 2012, which is out of warranty). It was working fine until few weeks earlier. Yesterday, when I switched it on, it shows the Dell logo; post which it shows a blinking cursor on a black screen. Though I waited for few mins thinking it would load Windows, it did not.
I had Win7 and recently upgraded to Win10. Also, I do not have a recovery disc; neither was provided with one from Dell during purchase.
Only options available for me are F2 and F12. I tried the following.1. Removed all connected extenal components to the laptop. Removed and Reinserted the battery. Tried ON & OFF couple of times. No use.2. Pressed F2 and changed the BIOS settings to boot from HD. No use.3. Pressed F12 and ran the Diagnostics. Basic Test was successful. Thorough Test revealed the following
Error Code 2000-0142Validation 7501Msg: Hard Drive 0 - S/N 12*******, self test unsuccessful. Status = 7The given error code and message can be used by Dell Technical Support to help diagnose the problem.
Checked in Dell website with above info suggests me to replace the HD.
Is there any other suggestions from the forum for me to try?
Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

Answer:Dell inspiron 15 3537 black screen after logo and cant access to recovery / repair system

Thanks for writing to us.
Please load bios by tapping on f2 during bootup and check if the HD is detected.
If possible you can try this HD on another machine or another HD on this machine. Also please run diagnostics from f12 menu and if the test passes, then consider formatting the system first.
Do provide us your system tag#, email address and name via private message.

I would like to ask for your assistance because I'm already out of ideas how to resolve this issue. Right after I powered up the laptop, it will get past the DELL logo screen, then it will be completely just black screen. I wouldn't even hear any activity from the CPU fan, HDD and pressing the Caps Lock doesn't lit up the LED. The LED indicators on the side are only displaying the power indicator, but none for HDD, Battery and Wireless.
Here are the steps that I have done so far:
1) Removed the HDD and Battery, then press & hold the power button for at least 45-60 seconds to disperse the internal voltage. Then attach the Battery, but not the HDD.
2) Press and hold Fn and then the Power button, hoping to boot me up to the ePSA Diagnostic Utility
3) Press F2 or F12 while booting up
4) Re-seat the memory and also clean with a dry tissue
These are the procedures that I have done but nothing has changed. It still displays blank screen right after the DELL logo.
I do hope that you could assist me on this. Thank you so much!

my Dell Inspiron 14z is stuck on the Dell Logo at boot up.
it was working well yesterday, but just become freeze at boot up
I can't press F2 F8 or F12 because it freezes at this point.
Releasing the residual charge did nothing (I drained the battery, have no courage to remove battery as the procedure is kind of complicated) - same problem
Restarting and tapping F12 highlights 'Boot options' but at this point it freezes.
Restarting with Fn pressed had no effect - same problem.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Everything was working fine before I installed the latest Windows 10 automatic update. Now I can boot to the login screen and things looks good, but after I login I?m stuck on a black screen.

I can see a mouse cursor and if I hit curl+alt+del I immediately get the customary blue screen with options to Lock, Switch User, Sign Out, etc. But if I choose the Task Manager option I go back to the black screen and get a spinning cursor for a few seconds, then it goes back to being a regular cursor and nothing happens. So basically I?m stuck on this black screen. It?s not COMPLETELY black, since I can see the cursor, I just can?t go anywhere.

I can also, sort of, boot into safe mode. After login I?m on a black screen that says ?safe mode? in the corner and I see black and white Windows start button in the bottom left. Unfortunately, moving the cursor anywhere to the edge of the screen (eg over the Windows start button) shows a spinning cursor and if I click, it says ?The application is not responding. The program may respond again if you wait. Do you want to end the process?? but of course neither option has any effect, it?s always a spinning cursor.

Any ideas?

One day after some Windows 10 updates, I was getting the BSOD caused by the Intel Graphics 530 driver. I installed the latest available on Dell's website to no avail. I reset Windows 10 and still had the same issue.
My next step was to do a clean install. I downloaded Windows 10 Pro using the Microsoft Media Creator tool. I installed Windows 10, which turned out to be Build 1703, the Creators Update. I continued getting BSODs due to the Intel Graphics 530 driver. I also notice that if the laptop went to sleep, whenever I would wake it I was unable to use the keyboard although it would light up when trying to type.
I went back to the Dell website and saw there was a new Intel Graphics driver. Installed that, and the graphics BSODs no longer occur.
However, new issues cropped up. I still cannot use the keyboard after waking the computer. Sometimes I cannot use the touchscreen after waking the computer. Sometimes the computer crashes when it sleeps.
I downloaded all the latest drivers from the Dell website for my service tag, and installed them all. Same issues. I right-clicked, checked for updates from Device Manager on all devices. Same issues.
So, naturally, I reinstalled Windows 10 Creator again, clean install. This time I only installed the Dell Wireless 1830 driver so I could get online, then let Windows Update grab the rest of the drivers.
Same issues persist. I looked in Event Viewer and can see an error that Windows failed to load a certain driver. I've determin... Read more

Hello everyone. after my last "dell update" ive had some SERIOUS issues with the battery.. i can charge it to 100% shut down the screen lid, and its discharged next morning when i wake up.

i live in Denmark, and the warratny rules are propably different here in other countries, but here we can call the sales place, and open up a warranty case, here at dell it seems that we are FORCED to go through a lot of different steps before being able to open up a warranty case. isnt there any way to avoid all those "trouble shotting" with AI bots they have hired to filter out the customer's wanting to open up a warranty case

i have paid for premium support, but when i called the last night they wanted me to call back, but for whatever reason it was, i dont know
I now have a spacebar that is squeaky, a battery that is discharging, and a monitor that randomly starts blinking. oh yeah and if you have the dell sound software turned on and you try to dim the light on the monitor by using FN+ F11 or 12 you get a lot of statis noise in the speakers.

Pls can someone help me, and the regular warranty is about to run out in 17 days, and i want this resolved asap. I am afraid that dell might postpone this to make the warranty run out :(
im new to using Dell services and dell forum's but it seem like a very big job to open up a simple warranty case

I've previously updated my laptop to the latest Windows 10 version (1703) and I found lots of issues like screen flickering, and some random BSODs that seemed to be related to the SSD drive, after lots of tries of fixing those driver problems I decided to go back to the previous build and problems have gone.
But now, Microsoft is pushing this update and I can't postpone for more time, eventually, it'll be installed and I want to know if its a list of drivers(and specific versions) at least for the most critical part:
* Intel HD Graphics
* Nvidia driver
* Samsung SSD

Answer:Dell XPS 15 9550 - What are the drivers that works properly in Windows 10 Creators Update 1703?

Hi there, take a look at this thread for suggestions on update steps for your system, and lastly update the BIOS. After these updates are performed Creators Update should work correctly. If you have trouble after the Update please post back. I will be out until Tuesday but will respond when back. Best regards,Brad

I'm facing blue screen recently on my Dell XPS 9550 laptop. I've opened ticket to Dell support and their offer was "reinstall Windows 10 OS again and tell us the result" which is unacceptable for me.
When I open the computer the screen is disappearing suddenly and comes back again with fluctuation. Especially It was occurring all the times when I lock my Windows-10 screen then try to login again.
I am attaching the screen captures.
1) Stop Code: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE || igdkm64.sys
After all; I found the soultion as below.
Closed this application --> C:\Program Files\Portrait Displays\Dell PremierColor\PremierColor.exe  and removed from startup everything worked fine and had not any blue screen issue.
Dear Dell and community, at least, Dell me what does PremierColor.exe do? And why we're facing this issue while PremierColor is open?

I recently re-installed Win10 version 1511 (Build 10586.164) and have updated all Dell Drivers after being unable to fix my webcam problem. Device manager correctly detects the camera as an imaging device, but all programs like Skype & Camera, just show a black image (Skype shows the loading icon). The LED indicator on the webcam also lights up whenever I open a program that tries to do I/O with the webcam like VLC, Skype or Camera.
Is this a known issue with the 9550? I read somewhere that there are some Webcam specific drivers but I have been unable to locate them.

I have a new Dell XPS 15 9550, which I recently did a clean install of Windows 10 64 bit on.  The laptop has two display adapters:- Intel HD Graphics 530- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M
I've been struggling with a black screen issue for several days.   When I boot up the laptop, if I hurry I can get past the Windows login screen.  Within 15 seconds after that, the screen goes black, and it appears that the computer is hung.  The keyboard keys still light up if I push them, but there is no mouse.  Plugging in an external monitor doesn't help.  Control + Alt + Delete does nothing.  I am forced to hold the power button to shut down the computer.
Using safe mode, I am able to disable either of the two display adapters.  Then I don't have the black screen problem.  I have also discovered that I can leave both display adapters enabled if I leave a DA200 USB-C adapter plugged in to the laptop (with nothing plugged into it).  If I unplug the DA200, the black screen comes within seconds.  This is the opposite of what I would expect if there was a problem with the DA200.
I have installed all of the latest drivers from Dell's website - some of them multiple times.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  I am getting quite frustrated...
Thank you.

When I try to boot the laptop(dellE7240 win 8.1) it shows fell logo and windows logo but after that just a blank screen with cursor. Advance boot option doesn't show any safe mode option. Interesting enough when last night I shut it down. The power, wifi and the system light were on for quite a while. I did shut it down by clicking shut down and not pressing the power button. Can any help on how to boot the laptop? Or what could the problem be?

Answer:Blank screen after dell and windows logo

several things to try - the led's are a telling sign of a problem.. the black screen with flashing cursor is the OS was not found..

remove any CD/DVD's from drive slots
F2 into your Bios setting a reset the system defaults and verify HDD by bios
verify System Memory is seen and correct in bios

lastly remove and reseat memory sticks and HDD in PC

Okay, just created an account to post this in case some people might have encountered a similar issue and have suggestions on fixing it long-term.
My Dell 7348 was fine running Windows 10, but after updating to the Creators Update and rebooting, it would freeze and get stuck on the black screen with spinning white dots (after the initial screen with the white Dell logo).
Several reinstalls later using a WIndows 10 USB key installer, and I finally isolated the cause: the Intel HD 5500 Graphics drivers. I tried three versions of the Intel Graphics drivers to see if there was a difference:

The package on Dell's support page for the 7348, which installs Intel Graphics Driver
The drivers fetched by Windows 10 via Windows Update, which also installs Intel Graphics Driver
Intel's official and latest drivers, which installs the newer Intel Graphics Driver

All three of them, on reboot, would still get me stuck on the black screen with spinning dots. Even on a fresh and clean installation, with new partitions and all.
But guess what lets me boot and reboot without any problems every time? Yup, the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers. Using those, I have no booting problems at all.
So if you're having the same issue as me booting/rebooting into Windows 10 and your Dell laptop uses Intel Graphics drivers, this is a workaround you can use.
A quick thank you for reading this far, so I'll get down to the question: does anyone ... Read more

Has anyone had issues with the BIOS 1.2.25 update with the XPS 15?  It "bricked" my laptop, although as it turns out, all it did was orphan/remove the Windows Boot option from the BIOS.  Adding it back in and moving it to first in the boot list fixed the issue (although I wasted 3 hours on the phone with Dell "Premium" Support, and they never mentioned this as an option).
My other question is whether there should be any arguments following the UEFI \efi\boot\bootx64.efi file in the BIOS, or if only that is needed as the argument in the BIOS?  I do not have a reference point (of course) and searching on-line only found that file for the UEFI boot, but no additional arguments.  The machine is running Windows 10 Pro.

Hello.   I was doing a reset on an Inspiron 11 (3162) and it failed.  After exiting, it then went into a loop where the DELL logo displays, fades to black briefly and then the logo returns and repeat...  I ran diagnostic tests and everything is running properly.  Is there anything you would recommend trying?  Thanks.

The FHD screen has a bit of a color issue. When I am on a white page, much like this one, I can see that the left half of the screen is a darker tinge of red. Why is this, I know it isn't a driver issue and I can't seem to troubleshoot the problem. I have only seen one other poster who claimed they had this issue on another website. Now this color change is hardly noticable when in a video but it is quite bothersome when I am browsing the internet. Anyone know a fix or why this is happening?

As soon as I open a few windows in my browser, I get a popup that says "Memory insufficient - close some programs). And then my browsers crash all the time. Often the popup says the problem is with "Dell Premier Color" but not always.
How can I fix that? I though this laptop had so much RAM?

Answer:Constant Memory Issue on Dell XPS 15 (9550), usually with Dell Premier Color

The exact messages which I get are:
"Your computer is low on memory. To restore enough memory for programs  to work correctly, save your files and then close or restart all open programs."
"Your computer is low on memory. Save your files and close these programs: Dell PremierColor"
I get this even though I do not use much memory at all (just normal usage!)
Please let me know how to fix this, thanks!

We're encountering scrolling issues with Excel 2013 (and 2016).
What we mean by that is graphic distortions (blocks of black) appearing on the worksheet during the scroll action.
It happens almost exclusively on the externally attached monitor.
Even after the scrolling action is finished the blocks of blacks will persist and will obscure the data in the cells. Generally only opening the worksheet anew will correct the issue (until scrolling is once again initiated)
This is on a new Dell XPS 15 (9550) running Windows 10.The monitor is a Dell U2717D connected via the HDMI.
We've done quite a bit of troubleshooting but before describing in detail we wanted to know if anybody had seen something similar?

Dear Dell,
I bought my XPS 15 in December 2015. The battery is swelling and lifting the trackpad above the laptop case.
I am finding the trackpad increasingly difficult to use, and I am afraid that the battery will rupture and destroy the computer and/or injure me!
I went to your site to obtain a replacement battery. But the site says you no longer offer the battery for this computer model!
So, after 1.5 years, having spent over $1,600, you decide to drop support for a product?!

How about some help?

I am picking up the XPS 15 this week and currently have two P2815Q monitors I am using with the Microsoft Surface Book.  Currently these are connected to the Surface Book via a single mini-display port cable with the 2rd 4K connected to the first via mini-display port.
So my question is how do I connect these monitors to the XPS 15.  I understand the XPS has Thunderbolt and a single HDMI 1.4 port.  While HDMI 1.4 is not capable of driving 4K at 60hz, I'm also wondering what the new Dell Dock is going to bring to the game here.

Answer:Dell Inspiron M5010 BIOS update failure - black screen

If you've waited for 20-30 min to see if the recovery worked to no effect, you really don't have another option at this point.  It'll likely cost about what a replacement board does to have the BIOS chip unsoldered, flashed and resoldered.
That said, $150 is a lot to spend on a system this old.  It may make more sense to replace the system.

Yesterday I installed critical/needed Windows XP updates that had been waiting on me for a few weeks behind the yellow update shield in the lower right corner of my screen. I was having problems connecting my sons new Christmas present, Xbox Live , to the internet so I was about to restart the computer to see if maybe the router needed me to do a clean reboot after entering the Xboxs MAC address into my allowed devices list. I stupidly thought Id be thorough by installing those waiting updates first and then restart. All went well and when it finished and asked if I wanted to restart now I selected yes. Nothing happened. I kept trying, still no restart. Then I went to Start>Turn Off>Restart several times and each time I returned to my desktop with nothing happening. Finally I just did a cold shutdown with the power button. My son is, understandably, so upset that he cant use his present to connect with his friends live.
Now my computer wont boot up at all past the Dell splash screen. The typical churning, lights and sounds all begin and then when the Dell logo screen appears, everything goes quiet. It took me several times before I could get into my BIOS, select boot order to start with my CD, place my XP install disc into my drive and restart. Still, I cant get past that screen and it never boots from the CD. (the CD light does go steady at power on like it always does but then goes off at that splash screen along with everything else. I just got this new Dell XPS 15 9550 2 days ago (10-Aug-16) and it has already crashed 4 times with blue screen. After the first BSOD, I thought it was due to outdated drivers. But then I updated all drivers to latest including updated BIOS. Then I ran a system diagnostic test from the Dell support page. Second BSOD occurred while running diagnostics. Today I just turned on the computer and it crashed with BSOD while just sitting idle. The I ran a second diagnostic test. This time, the diagnostics ran successfully except two.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M    Block Move Test     Cannot Run
The BSOD were CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED or UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION.The system just seems so unstable to do anything serious on it..Is this laptop worth keeping or should I just return it? How does the 9550 work for others?

I've recently been having serious screen issues with the Dell XPS 15 (9550). It may be related to a recent bios update as these issues only started after the most recent bios update.
There seems to be a driver compatibility issue with Dell PremierColor / Geforce 960m drivers / Intel display adapter drivers. I've tried various Geforce driver versions from the latest to mid 2016 to no success, so I think the new bios update has an interaction with Dell PremierColor causing the issue. I cannot open Dell PremierColor at all, and just trying to open it causes some serious screen issues.
Has anyone else recently experienced the issue? The screen flickers wildly, goes black, comes back on with different color profiles and brightness. I can maybe make use the computer for 30mins at a time before I get a blue screen of death.
Essentially these issues have rendered the laptop useless.

this is my first post on these forums, I usually find them useless but I can't find any other answers on dear old Google, so I thought I'd give this a shot.
I purchased a brand new XPS 9550 today, unfortunately the 4K touch model wasn't available at the selected store and I needed a laptop immediately for work (by Monday morning)
I'm very curious because I only have the Full HD model is it possible to replace that screen with a 4K display (the same one from the 4K model of the same laptop) as I know you can purchase them.
Kind Regards

Last week my Dell 946 (connected through USB) was working fine. After a notification from MicroSoft I had updates installed. This has now rendered my printer useless as I receive a message stating that there is a communication error. I am running XP on a Dell XPS410. I have deleted the printer in control panel, unplugged the printer and placed the Dell driver & utility disc in the drive. I receive a message that it needs files (i.e. dlcicur.dll). Any thoughts are appreciated.

Answer:Dell 946 AIO usb connection failed after Windows XP update

padraig, Is your printer showing up in "control panel printers and faxes" ? Was the update the installation of xp sp 3? When you deleted the printer did you follow precisely the manual of instruction for it's reinstall? This last item is often the cause of a printer installation failure.   I could not help but notice your "avatar'. If i might offer a suggestion change it to something that does not represent a political statement. No point in aggravating other members that may not agree with you. If you are an American citizen then of course President Obama  IS your President ( i do take it you may not like that but simply put it is a fact). Also he is NOT my President either but that is because i am NOT a U.S. citizen as are undoubtedly countless 100s of other CH members. Hope my suggestions are helpful to you with your technical issue and in your continued enjoyment of participation in the CH forums, truenorth

I recently purchased the Dell USB-C to VGA/HDMI/USB/Ethernet Adapter (Dell 470-ABQN) to use as a dock with my XPS 15 9550. Unfortunately while using this adapter the fans run at a very high speed, approximately 80%, and are therefore loud and disturbing during meetings and desk work. I have it connected to only an HDMI monitor and a USB mouse receiver. The fans also run constantly when using the built-in USB and HDMI ports, but at a tolerable level. I will have to return this item without a fix, so could someone at Dell please advise if there is a solution or if this is a known issue that will be reviewed? I have updated both the Thunderbolt firmware and software and applied all Windows Updates. Thanks

I have the same problem here. I connect a usb-c ethernet adapter in my case. The fan keeps running when the adapter is connected.

My Dell XPS 15 9550 refuses to stay asleep after closing the lid. It routinely wakes itself up after 3 hours (possibly to try to hibernate?) but once awake it stays running until the battery dies. It's at risk of overheating because I keep it in my backpack. The only way to avoid this is to shut down when it's not in use, but this makes the computer substantially less useful than my Macbook which is 4 years older.
The only power request that regularly appears is Realtek Audio, but I've used "powercfg /requestsoverride" to ignore this to no avail. I will disable hibernate altogether, but there really must be another option. As mentioned this only started after the latest creators update. I have the latest drivers and firmware.
This has been an ongoing problem for me with XPSes in the past. I generally like this series, but I have to seriously consider moving to another supplier when it's time to upgrade.

How is this Dell's fault?
Windows 10 installed a new version. In case you haven't noticed, Microsoft = Windows.

So I have been messing around with this laptop for weeks now trying to figure out how to get it back to normal loading and everything. What happened at first was that my husband noticed the computer was very slow in responce to just about everything. We checked internet connections and nothing helped. Well one night he shut it down, and the next day when he tried to turn it on, it would state "Checking Media (Fail)" then change to another screen that said "No Boot Device Found. Press any key to reboot the machine".  After attempting to reboot the machine, these same notifications came up over and over.  So, I researched tons of forums on tips of how to get it "re-booted" This was a few weeks ago so I dont remember exactly what I did. I changed boot options, this and that, and nothing helped. However the absolute last thing I did was changed something to "Intel Smart Response", and now my computer will NOT move past the Dell logo. even f2 and f12 wouldnt work. The loading bar under the Dell logo will pop up, but it will say like that. I have tried waiting it out for hours and nothing changes. My brother did try a Recovery USB, but he forgot that my laptop is Windows 8 and his is 7, so needless to say that didnt work at all.
So my problem is now that I need to create that Recovery USB thing. I was not aware that I should have made this as soon as my computer came in. I have nev... Read more

Answer:Creating a Windows 8 Recovery Drive for an Inspiron that will not load past the Dell logo screen!! HELP

"Checking Media" and "No Boot Device Found" sounds like it's trying to boot from the DVD drive but not finding a Windows system disk.  You can try putting one in the drive.  If you don't have a Windows 8 system disk, you'll have to keep trying the F12 bypass (keep pressing it repeatedly...don't hold or only press once) to get you into boot options, and then make sure you select your hard drive.  You should be able to request a system disk from Dell (and you should anyway...even if you do recover from the USB drive).
ALSO: please remember that, unless you made an image of your hard-drive or used backup software, your "recovery" options will be limited to repairing the existing installation or reinstalling altogether.  If you reinstall, you could lose your files and settings.
For what it's worth,  my Inspiron started acting up after about a year (Windows 7) with overheating on high-demand programs (even with a cooling pad, plenty of ventilation and a desktop fan blowing on it).  That was followed by the slow performance you described and now I'm getting a "hard drive failure" error.
I've seen other users report the similar issues with their Inspirons on these forums (and others) so I think we just got stuck with a lemon .  Hope you have better luck with yours....I've pretty much given up on mine and moved back to my old desktop.

I initially started having video driver update problem, screen flickering and then blue screen appearing, I fix it by returning to the older version of the driver. Then tried to update the Samsung driver as recommended by someone on the forum, it couldn't be installed.
So now I started having this error KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION, when after closing the lid of the computer I open it, or sometimes randomly.
How can I remediate this problem?
I had the best experience with XPS 13 bought in 2008 that lasted eight years until it got stolen.
The current XPS is disappointing, such an unstable system!

Answer:Dell XPS 15 9550 Blue Screen KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION

Laptops do need driver updates. Not sure why you would install a Samsung driver on a Dell laptop. Dell customizes drivers for specific models and any rare updates must come from Dell. Uninstall the Samsung driver and rollback to the original one. You created the problem by updating drivers. Consider using the Reset Option in Recovery.

For some reason I get a screen flicker that is noticeable and irritating. It happens with every BIOS after 1.2.00. Not sure why, but if I want to get rid of screen flicker I have to back to BIOS 1.2.00. Has anyone else experienced this problem and/or found a fix? I think it is rather unacceptable for a $2,200 laptop with a 4K screen to have screen flicker issues and for it to continue to be a problem with the last three BIOS releases.

So basically - as the subject says -
Having a brand new Dell XPS 15 9550
with most recent Dell Wireless 1830 802.11ac drivers
cmd command "netsh wlan show drivers"
shows that current driver does not support hosted network,
meaning, that i am unable, for example, to share my ethernet internet connection Over wifi to other devices - i am unable to make my laptop a hotspot.
Which is ridiculous in 2016 and for a laptop of this level and is basically a prerequisite to be Windows 10 approved.
So my question is DELL, what the ***? When do we get normal drivers?
Anybody has the same issue - knows the workaround? Thanks.
I could not have expected that 2000$ laptop would not be able to do that. this is soul crushing.

When will Dell enable Intel Speed Shift via a BIOS update? All the BIOS update requires is requires is writing 1 to MSR 0x770!
Speed Shift was fully supported by Intel and Microsoft in 2015 (1 year ago!). It makes the CPU much more responsive (particularly in gaming and real-time tasks) and costs nothing.
In the meantime, anyone can run software manually to enable Speed Shift but you need to relaunch the software every time your computer sleeps or turns off, so that is inconvenient. But the boost in performance is worth the effort.
I have manually enabled SpeedShift via software such as ThrottleStop or just writing 1 to MSR 0x770.
Dell - can you get Speed Shift into the next BIOS revision?!?!

Answer:XPS 9550 Speed Shift - when will Dell enable via BIOS update?

Such a shame that a premium workstation doesn't even use some basic skylake features. Dell please fix this.

Hi there,
I used big old friend google many times, but to no avail. I have no cluehow to fix this error. At irreguar moments (often simply while I have a Skype call, but not only then) my new Dell XPS 15 9550 would freeze and then a blue screen appears, saying DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION, we are now gathering information before we restart your PC. But the counter stays at 0%.
So I have to manually restart.
Nevertheless this happens about 1-2 times per week and it is pretty annoying. But nothing I found online would give me a clue of what to do....
Anybody knows the issue and how to solve it?

So recently I got myself a brand new external monitor to use with my Dell xps 15 9550, I used a USB-c to displayport to connect it. The first week it worked fine but after that my built-in screen got messed up. Now by messed up I mean the screen gets lines of colour all over it, as well as it is flickering. This issue solved itself at some point but it only lasted a couple days before happening again and I haven't gotten it to fix since. I have a feeling it's a software issue but everything is up to date, does anyone have a fix for this? For an issue to occur then go away is strange, I know the issue is the USB-c to displayport but, in this case I'm just looking for a screen fix and I'll avoid the USB-c until there's a work around.

I received my XPS 15 recently and have noticed that the display flickers slightly when set to 0% brightness. No flicker is visible at higher brightness values or while gaming (unless my eyes are deceiving me).
I am wondering if I have a defective unit or if this is just a driver/settings issue.
Anyone else experiencing this issue? or have a solution?

Answer:Dell XPS 15 (9550) subtle screen flickering at 0% brightness

Yup. Same issue here with my 9550. No solution yet.
Do you also hear a noise/static type sound coming from under the laptop when its quite enough to hear?

Hi all,I ordered the new Dell XPS 15 9550 a little while ago. It's a great machine, but there was an issue with a metallic rattling inside one of the speakers, especially when playing high notes. I got a replacement, the sound is fine, but the screen is different on that one. It's the same type of screen, same manufacturer (LG) but the colours, brightness and white balance are off. It's almost got a very subtle yellowish, muddy tint that is warm. The whites are not white any more and it does not seem as bright. I had them side by side so I could compare and the difference is obvious.I don't think there's anything wrong with the screen - but it does seem odd, and I got a hunch that Dell have made some adjustments to the BIOS or the default colour profile.Has anyone ele experienced this, and is there a fix for this? Thanks!

I got my laptop just a few weeks ago, and it came with Windows 10.  Soon afterwards the touch screen started not working, very similar to the posts about the USB device being powered down to save battery (you can find those posts, from Dec 2013 else on this site).
However, I'm on Windows10, with the recent large November public update applied.  In device manager there is no 'USB Input Device' listed under Human Interface Devices.
Further: the System's Settings->About panel the OS is reporting under "Pen and Touch" that "No pen or touch input is available for this display".
So, beyond USB power settings, it seems like I'm completely missing the device driver for the touch screen.
I have applied every driver, bios & firmware update that I can find on the Dell support site.  Nothing fixed things.
Any hints?  Am I looking for a display driver or an input driver or something else?

Answer:Dell XPS 15 (Model 9550) touch screen no longer working.

Same problem here, plus I see an “Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)” in my device manager constantly appearing and disappearing. Also the touch does not work in the Diagnostic application you can enter via the bios. I don’t know if it should work there, on the 9530 Model it did…
I have the device now for about a week and I think Dell should again be deeply ashamed of what they deliver to their loyal customers.
With the 9530 model they refused to repair the coil whine problem a lot of people complained about. This was really annoying but at least I could work with the device.
The 9550 model has not two issues which really prevent me from doing my work.
As soon as you activate hyper-v the screen starts flickering and the display driver starts crashing.
Touchscreen not working.
We are talking about really expensive hardware here and it’s extremely frustrating when you experience more troubles with a 2.500$ Notebook than you do with 500$ hardware.
And on top of it all they told me today that they could not replace my display because Dell has no replacement parts on stock and they don’t know when they will get them. And that’s exactly what you get when you pay for “Next-Business-Day” “Pro” support.
If the device does not work at the end of the week I will send it back.

Bought DELL XPS 15-9550 with intel Core i7, 16G RAM, 1TB SSD HD, with Nvidia-GeForce GTX 960M from Best Buy last November.
Connected to external monitor HP2311xi through the HDMI.
Everytime need to set up display as 2 display, HP as Main and laptop as extended. Then every 5 to 6 min, the system reverted back to single display by first blanking the screens.
Reset the display by clicking detect and the laptop screen come back alive, and then after 5 to 6 same thing happened
Talk to Geek Squad. Change the cable, update the Intel HD graphics drive, reinstall and uninstall. Still happening
Update BIOS to the latest available still not solve the issue
Even after letting it in single display mode, the blanking keep continue. It is very annoying and distracting while working.
Any one encounter the same issue.  Please share the resolution
Thank you

Answer:Dell XPS 15-9550 with External Monitor HP2311xi - keep getting blank screen on and off -

I am having the same issue with my XPS 15-9550 with Nvidia combined graphics connected to a Dell UP3216Q external monitor.
Typically when interacting with apps, i.e. scrolling in MS Edge browser, the external monitor blacks out for a few seconds. It is very intermittent, and tends to occur several times within a 30 second period then it will stop for a while. Acts like bad HDMI cable connection. I have the same issue with multiple cables, although it could be the receiving connector on either the laptop or the monitor.
Have changed drivers on both the Nvida and intel adapters with no change in behavior. Changed resolution, frame rate, etc.
The problem renders the system unusealbe and I will have to return both the laptop and display if not resolved soon.

It could be any number of things but my first 2 guesses are possibly the hard drive or might want to take it somewhere so that you will get a correct diagnosis.

I need some help with my old Dell Studio Laptop. I don't know the exact make, but I am pretty sure it is from 2010. Anyway, a few weeks ago, I put a disc into my laptop and shortly, the laptop started making strange noises. I managed to eject the disc, but now whenever I try to start up the laptop, I cannot. After the Dell logo pops up, it says there is a problem with starting my computer (this is a blue, Windows 10 screen, as I downloaded Windows 10). I have tried restarting, following that blue screen to "Troubleshoot," "Advanced Options," "System Restore," etc., but nothing is working. I have some photos on my laptop that I would like to recover before this situation gets any worse. Thank you!

Answer:Dell Studio Laptop (2010?) Won't Start Past the Dell Logo

First thing to do is remove the hard drive, mount it in an external case (example below) and attach it to a working system to make a backup of those files.
Once that's done, you can proceed with the Dell diagnostics (F12 at powerup) -- test the entire system AND run an extended test on the hard drive.  If there is an error, replace the faulty part.  If not, you can proceed with a repair or reinstall of the OS.
Get the files backed up NOW before you go any further.
You'll need something like this
