I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For a lefty, I am able to change the mouse to left-handed. However, I would like the buttons on the mousepad to be right-handed. My other Lenovo Ideapad 710s has this feature meaning even my "external" mouse is for left-handed, the trackpad buttons are for the regular right-handed. Hope you guys will add this feature to the new trackpad software.

I have a X1 Carbon Gen4 1. Installed new Samsung 950 pro 512gb nvme hard drive2. setup bootable usb (2.0) stick with win7, added NVMe and USB3 drivers3. Tried to boot but it would not boot, no matter if I selected legacy or UEFI or both4. Added UEFI to usb5. Wouldnt boot with bios set to UEFI but now it would boot with both and legacy first option, strange6. Go into windows, loaded the NVMe driver but shift+F10 wouldnt work7. managed to get the command prompt via recovery.  copied install files and setup booting8. Drive would not boot.9. Inserted USB, now win7 install worked fine so I just wiped the partition and installed windows10. On reboot, windows wouldn't boot.  It goes to the boot menu.  If I select NVMe, it just goes back to the boot menu. In the BIOS, the boot menu has "NVMe0: <null string>" I've tried resetting bios to defaults, no difference I tried booting to my USB win7 install and running the repair, but that made no difference. The only way I can get windows to boot is if I insert a USB stick (even an empty drive).  Then it boots fine.  (USB HDD must be enabled in the boot menu though.)  I've never seen anything like this before and have run out of ideas. I'm thinking that the BIOS isnt seeing the NVME correctly.  I'm guessing it may have something to do with UEFI.  I could not get the USB stick to boot with UEFI or Legacy initailly.  Then when I added the UEFI file to the USB... Hi all. I am new to this forum, so I hope I don't break any rules.I have 2 questions about the Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen4 for you all; 1. Has anyone here successfully installed an operating system with legacy boot on an SD-card in the card-slot without touching the internal SSD:s boot block, and then be able to actually boot directly from it? In other words making it bootable only if you interrupt the boot sequence and manually choose another boot device.2. Will the SD-card reader handle the relatively new 256GB capacity microSD-cards? Can anyone confirm? I am aware it can handle the new UHS-II rated low voltage cards, but I am unsure about the maximum storage capacity. Any input on these matters will be greatly appreciated. I am having a hard time getting answers out of my buddy google on these issues. Cheers!

Hello all, I'm posting this here hoping that someone can help me with my problem with my X1 carbon. Basic Information:X1 Carbon, 4th Gen, Type: 20FB, System: windows 10 home I recently reset my X1 carbon to factory setting, and no setting changes were made after that. After that, I keep experiencing Wifi connection problems. I'm not able to get a wireless connection to public wifi access points (More specifically, my school's web system). Most often it says "CONNECTED, NO INTERNET". NO INTERNET AT ALL. However, I can get connection when I am connected to my home wireless router. The system does not seem to have problems on home wifi networks. So I believe there is a hardware/software issue with my laptop Please note that I reported the issue to my school's IT department. They confirmed that it was not the wifi that was not working since all other devices, including my phone, worked perfectly well with the wifi. They checked my laptop and said that my laptop's internet speed was only one fifth of other devices under the same wifi, so it got bullied by other devices and constantly got 'kicked out'. PS. all my drivers are up to date. I've been tolerating this issue for a month. It's a real pain.  Any thoughts?  Thank you in advance

Hello! Since I just started to use this laptop recently, I noticed something weird when pressing "space" button. It is often very loud compared to other buttons and I started to look a bit closer. It seems, that if pressed down from the middle or lower part of the "space" button, it somehow rubs against the frame and feels a bit stuck. It depends on the direction, but I feel it's something that should not be there. Has anyone else experienced it? Also when looked close, it seems that frame under "space" is a bit curved. Laptop definately has not had any falls or bumps, so it has to have been from the start. Interesting that user before me didn't notice it, because it is very noticeable. Any thoughts? Also how to act about it? I also link a short video for demonstration purpose: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8f8wN1bZI3KVE03Q2lNazRyZm8  Thank you in advance for any input on this!J.

Answer:Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen4 battery "plugged in, not charging"

Have you ever set a battery charge threshold?

What happens if you let the battery discharge from the 47% in your screenshot, and then plug it in again?  Will it recharge to ~47%?  Or will it then be stuck at the new (lower) level?

I briefly plugged in the power supply from a W541 into an X1 carbon and the X1 laptop registered it was charging.  Will the more powerful power supply cause any long term battery issues?  I'm thinking to use the more powerful charger in the OneLink+ and use the OneLink 65W charger for travel because of size.  Thanks!

Hi, I just cracked open my thinkpad carbon X1 gen 4. The purpose was to try and install a second WiFi card in the slot designed for the 3G/4G card. It was only after I had a look but the X1 carbon does not have miniPCIE slots. It appears to be a smaller form factor fro both the WiFi and the 3G/4G slot. Can anyone tell me what slot type this is? Many thanks

When I bring it out of mute there is no sound coming out of the speakers. However, if I plug the headphone jack in, I can hear the sound through the headphone. It seems I did something wrong somewhere. Can you please help me to correct the situation. Thank you.

Hello I bought X1 carbon last week. Everything works perfectly but when playing audio and browsing web I sometimes hear strange cracking sound that interrupts audio that is played. When web page is large and complex it is more likely that this cracking sound is generated. I've just applied all the updates from think vantage system update but no improvement is observed. I use different players and tried to use headphones - nothing helps. Has anybody experienced similar problem? What may be a reason of it? Of course the music is played from local file and not from the net. I also used DPC Latency Checker that shows there are some misbehaving (long delays marked as red). It is strange that fresh machine has such issue... Le.

Hello everyone, I got my X1 Carbon today. I was so excited until I went to adjust the volume. It came with Win 10 Pro and you know that little chime it makes when you adjust the volume? It sounds so aweful on my X1 Carbon, as if the entire base is vibirating with the speakers, and the sound is very distorted. It's pretty loud, though. The vibiration would only stop if I turn the volume down to about 20-30, but then it's really really quiet. I went to a local computer store to check out what it's like on other laptops. They have a T450 there, which sounds a LOT better. Even an Asus 13" didn't sound that aweful. I remember an X series I had about 7 years ago didn't sound this bad either... I was wondering is there something wrong with the speakers or is it really just the sound quality X1 Carbon offers at the moment? Thank you so much for your help! Jack

Well, I got my new X1 Carbon. Dumped Windows 8 and re-installed Windows 7 SP1 from scratch. There is a problem with the Realtek sound drivers. If the volume is above 30 (or so), the sound cuts in and out. The Windows Startup sound never plays right. Play any source and if you turn the volume up, the sound cuts in and out like a bad cell phone call. BUT, uninstall the Realtek sound drivers (6.0.1.7188) and let Windows install its base HD Audio Sound driver and all is good. I also tested the master Realtek drivers R2.73 and still the same problem.  It is like when the digital signal is too strong, whatever converts it to analog gets overloaded and cuts. Has anyone encountered this problem ? I see many other issues with the sound on the new X1...

Hi, for the last two weeks I'm having a problem when I use earphones on my Lenovo X1.  I've tried different earphones, and every time I put them on and plug them in the computer, audio will sound degraded: For example, when playing a movie trailer, human voices will sound so low that they can't be understood, but music will sound ok. Also, Skype calls are useless when using earphones (human voice again) I tried playing with different dolby settings to no avail. Sound on the loudspeakers is ok though.  Can someone help me fix this? Thanks!

Nothing helped. All drivers are updated, even Windows 10 is updated. Any suggestions?

Hi all. Have had the x1 for about a week now. I shut it down on Friday (sound working), booted it back up on Monday - no sound from the onboard speakers. I reinstalled the audio drivers and that worked--up until the point where I shutdown the machine for the day. Tried the same procedure again today, it does not work (shouldn't have to reinstall drivers after every boot anyway).  All I hear is tapping sound coming from the internal speakers. Any ideas? Device manager indicates that everything is working OK. It's the 20A7 version of the x1.

Answer:X1 carbon - no audio - tapping sound

got this working after  trying to unistalling all the audio drivers in safe mode -tried to use the realtek drivers but they would not install. Machine then booted with the windowa HD audio driver - still nothing. Read on another forum that fixing the registry could work..ran a tool to check for errors and the machine rebooted with sound after days of getting nowhere! Windows pused through a critical update and I'm back to square one. After the update was installed the audio was lost. Performing the steps above did not help this time. After I got it working I created a restore point - can't use it due to a critcal error..typical! I'm all out of ideas folks.

My X1 Carbon was working fine, but one day the sound just stopped working.  I restored my image back to the Windows 8 stock image, and still not sound.  I tried re-installing Windows 7 from scratch, still no sound. I called into Lenovo, as the machine is only 4 months old.   The support rep said that they would do a "courtesy onsite visit exception" since this was my first warranty claim and that a lenovo tech would call me to arrange to have the machine looked at and the part swapped.  Apparently Lenovo only includes depot (ship your computer away) warranty support if you want their factory service. After waiting a week without hearing from anyone, I called back into the helpdesk with my ticket reference number.   The guy i was speaking to this time said that there were no notes on the ticket that i gave him and that the call was closed.  He also said that Lenovo no longer gives the "first time courtesy onsite exception" and that I would have to ship the machine back and be without a computer for 2 weeks! Good job lenovo.  You rock.  My first and last Lenovo.   Dell knows how to "DO" enterprise.  These guys do not.

Answer:X1 Carbon 20A7 No Sound through speakers

In Belgium it took 5 days to pick up my machine, repair it and get it back. But 2 weeks is still reasonable for a repair at the depot. This will require a motherboard swap. It is possible you maybe accidentally bent the connector on the inside. I once had this exact same problem on a different laptop. It happens.

Hello, my new x1 carbon, 2016 version, has a noticeable creaking sound when opening the lid (to me it seems the sound comes from the left side of the laptop base). the laptop is new, it has 2 weeks of life, and has been making the sound from the very first day.  I fear it will break with time, any ideas or suggestions?

Answer:X1 Carbon 2016 creaking sound when opening lid

Check that the screws are tight on the left. Might be a defective item, since it's just 2 weeks, the retailer should be able to exchange it. If you bought it from Lenovo directly, they have a RMA exchange program.

Hello users. In years of using Toshiba notebook, this is the first time any of them developed a fault overnight: after hibernating, my windows system sound has become screechy and distorted. Interestingly, other sounds just work fine (like listening to an mp3 or wmv file). I checked all sound system hardware and drivers parameters and everything looks squeaky clean. I'm at a loss for a solution.
Has anyone encountered the same problem? is it a Windows problem rather than Toshiba?
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I have never heard about this problem. Usually if there is some sound problem it takes affect on any kind of sound playback.

Hello everyone, I noticed that there are scratchy noises and very noticeable sound distortion with Wifi traffic on my 3rd Gen starting about 3 days ago. With the noises, the mouse becomes sluggish and video playback experiences small pauses, too. I have never had this problem before. The only thing I remember I changed recently is to hit the "Update Driver" button on the Wifi device in "Device Manager". I have already uninstalled the that device driver and downloaded the 18.40 one from Lenovo. It was good for about a day after installing the version 18.40 wifi driver, but the noises came back right after. I also noticed that any wifi traffic seems to trigger high CPU usage. I suspect this is the culprit, but couldn't find anything online. I suspect it has something to do with Windows 10 regular updates or the 18.40 wifi driver. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this problem? Thank you very much for your help! Jack

Answer:X1 Carbon 3rd Gen Noise and Sound Distortion with Wifi Traffic

What I also realized is that the problem seems to only happen after the system has been up and running for a while. I don't know if putting the system into standby changes anything.

When I two finger scroll on the touchpad through webpages on firefox sometimes i get a constant beeping noise. It is very prevalent on websites that load more content based on how far you scroll down, however if I scroll up for a bit the beeps starts again. The beeping is constant and occurs until i stop scrolling. I tried scrolling on the same webpages in chrome and the beeping never happens. I tried scrolling through firefox in safemode and the beeping still occurs. Also, the beeping occurs sometimes when I am at the bottom of a webpage and try to scroll down further even though there is nothing further to scroll down to. One finger scrolling using the side of the touchpad does not cause the issue and scrolling using the mouse and the scroll bar on the side of the webpage does not cause the issue either. It only happens when two finger scrolling. I have tried using process manager to isolate where the noise is coming from, but apparently the beep is not a .wav or .mp3 file so no path is displayed when the beep occurs. This issue just started after the last Windows 10 update. I have a feeling the issue lies in a newly installed Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver that was automatically installed during the update. I tried rolling back the driver but when i do this windows just delets synaptic driver altogether. Anyone have a solution for this issue? Thanks.

Hi,I just bought a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 20BS with Windows 7 and the sound quality in headphones is just terrible. No bass and a lot of strange noices. I updated the bios via BIOS update utility and also installed the realtek HD audio driver. It had almost no effect. I tried uninstalling the drivers and using the default Windows drivers which gave even worse sound quality. I don't have the Dolby* tools installed and I also uninstalled Realtek Audio manager and only updated the driver manually. I also tried drivers from realtek.com directly with no luck. Any ideas what else should I try?Thank you!

I've had this issue since new (6+ months) which has been driving me crazy. It's very intermittent, I generally shutdown every day, and it might work for 2-3 weeks fine. Other times I'll boot up, have no sound in browsers and have to reboot multiple times before it works. After booted, it either completely works or it doesn't. So when the problem happens system sounds and other applications play fine, but no sound in Explorer, Chrome, etc. Checked all the usual things, updated drivers, reinstalled Flash, checked volume settings, etc. Searching around many other people faced a similar issue which was fixed by a registery change, I checked this also but my registry was correct. For example: http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-609290-no-sound-when-browsing-the-internet If anyone has any tips or pointers on what to do to investigate this further I would be very grateful. Happy to provide any information which might help better understand this problem. Thank you. /Mick

For this issue, please first make sure that you have not unchecked the option to ?Play sounds in webpage?.

Hi all, I just received my new X1 Carbon 2015. This is the first time I purchase a Lenovo Device after years with Dell. Unfortunately, the sound quality is horrible, but I am not sure if this is by design of if the laptop is faulty.. The sound is very bad when it is coming from the speakers, especially the left speaker: the sound is cracking and saturating. This is especially true when the Dolby is on, and you clearly hear the problem with standard Windows event sounds (for example the sound you can hear when you adjust the volume with the slide on the sound icon next to the clock), or any warning sound. No problem if I use an headset. Am I alone with that issue? Even if the device looks great, I have to say that I am overall disappointed by the laptop quality, especially regarding the cost of that device (this is the Core i7 with QHD touchscreen and 512GB PciE SSD):- When I received it last week, the left button from the trackpad was stuck (impossible to use). I had to gently scratch the side of the trackpad button to release the button. Probably some remains of the manufacturing blocking the button.- Then I noticed that sound issue.- And finally yesterday, I discovered a spot on the bottom right of the screen. Not a dead pixel, but a clear spot behind the pixels, 1 square millimeter,  reflecting the backlight. Thanks Pierre.

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 : Cracking sound speaker, especially with Dolby on (and other issues)

I have the exact same problem with the speakers, particularly the left one. It sounds totally distorted, cracking, and tinny when playing almost anything. As the OP pointed out, it's even worse with Dolby enabled. I will be calling customer support and/or service about this. I don't have any of the other problems the OP is experiencing. Except for the horrible, obviously broken sound quality - my new X1 Carbon 2015 has been a pretty good experience.

Hi, I bought my Carbon Touch looking forward to activating with Verizon and replacing my current 3g ipad.  After hours trying to figure out how to enable broadband, I find out that apparently the "touch" models don't offer it.  Can someone at Lenovo explain how they can have promotional materials like the page at http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/x-series/x1-carbon-touch/ that says "ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch" and "Embedded 3G Connectivity" while not offering it at all? Then, I thought I'd return the Touch and get the regular Carbon, but I'm seeing now that, despite all of the reviews and promo materials that say otherwise, it doesn't support Verizon either.  How can this be true?  Just about every review that I read about these laptops is flat wrong on these topics.  What's the scoop? I tried calling technical support a couple of times and they were of no help.

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch WWAN (Carbon does not support Verizon and Carbon Touch has no 3G at all)

jprny,

Welcome to the Support Forums! I can definitely understand your confusion and I know you must be frustrated. I can clarify that the WWAN is optional in the X1 Carbon, from the same link you provided you can open the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch Ultrabook Specs it states there is Optional 3G WWAN.

Here is the the X1 Carbon Personal Systems Reference (You will find the X1 Carbon Touch on the very bottom)
This shows the different models of the X1 Carbon and what specifications are included. Unfortunately, I only see AT&T as the 3G provider on the standard models. From the Parts List it looks like there are other options to choose from that would make it a configured to order machine. You may want to contact Verizon to see if any of the WWAN cards work with their network.

I would recommend contacting the after sales team:

My serial numer for the x1 carbon 4th gen is: xxxxxxxxxxxx.

I spent  $3,000 custimizing the x1 carbon 4th gen with 1TB PCI-e SSD. I thought I would got a laptop for me to use 3+ years, as I had a W540 used for 3+ years with 0 problems and very quite (but it is too heavy to carry it around).

However, as soon as I started this new laptop, the fan noise pissed me off. The noise is totally unacceptable, becuase I didn't start any programs yet (and it runs a fresh Win 7 Pro OS), the noise can be heard about 15 ft away in my bed room. I tried to restart for a few times, the noise comes back about 15 seconds after the system is reboot.

I did some googling, and found this old post for x1 carbon 1st gen:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/x1-fan-Noise/td-p/469001/page/4

I read the entire post, and I assume this is probably the Bios issue again (hopefully not the design issue, since this is the 4th gen). Can anyone from Levono help me geck this issue, and provide me a solution? I really hate to send the laptop back, and exchange a laptop probably with the same issue (if this is a Bios problem).

Cheers!

I have a brand new Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 3 (20BS-S02500), running windows 8.1 64-bit, 8g RAM.  Intel Core i7-5500UWhen using any progam, sometimes (but enough often to disturb work) the cursor randomly jump across the screen to the bottom left corner. The scenario is: moving cursor to some place to make an action (for example close a program) and when the cursor is on a right place to make a click  I make a click by tapping the left bottom side of the touchpad/ Ofcourse everything is done using touchpad and very quickly. But after click I see that cursor jumped to the left bottom corner and click was made on pinned in taskbar program. It seems to me, that cursor jumps on a fixed range to left down, it's final position (where click will be done) depends on where the cursor is on csreen when bag happens.  In windows events log sometimes (not every time when cursot jumps) appears this warning:SystemProvider Name: Win32kEvent code: 257, 258, 265I'm wondering if this a hardware or driver problem, or a windows 8.1 problem?I was trying to update BIOS, TouchPad driver - nothing helped. Current driver version is 18.1.27.30. Tryed 19-th version ... problem stays.  Lenovo, please advise.

I used the 1st gen X1 Carbon for a while and found out that it's very robust and the touch feeling is very good. I guessed that all sides (A+B+C+D) of it are made by carbon fiber. Correct me if I'm wrong. But when I use my X1 Yoga 1st gen, which has only carbon fiber on A side (the cover behind screen) and uses "Super Magnesium" on C+D sides (the cover around keyboard and behind the keyboard), this design bring several problems: 1. " Super Magnesium" is still metal, if you crash it by accident, you may leave a scrath on it permanently, this happens more on edges;2. what's more, the paint at the edge of " Super Magnesium" will be rubbed away with time goes on, and you will see the white metal not the ThinkPad black;3. metal will suffer from deformation by force;4. the D side of my X1 yoga feels loose when you hold it with one hand, which make you feel cheap of this $1500 machine. Thus I hope the next gen of X1 Yoga or X1 Carbon can provide a pure carbon fiber version, for better build quality and user experience. How do you guys think about it?

I was considering getting this laptop , probably leaning toward the touch version.  But display quality is really important to me, I do much software evelopment so i stare at thescreen a lot of course  I know this is not IPS panel, but more like the TN panel used in MacBook.   How does it compare to Macbook dispay (non retina). is it, worse, the same, or better?

Answer:Display quality of X1 carbon / X1 carbon touch

I haven't spent much time on a newer MBP, but it's very equivalent to a MBP a few generations back, but is brighter. It's for sure usable, and while IPS would be prefered, I can easily live with it daily.

I've been looking for a small, easily pocketable charger. Often the space occupied is mostly by the power cords, so I've been considering wall chargers where the brick directly plugs into the wall, such as the Targus APM69US - but I can't find any that have the new rectangular Lenovo tips. Any suggestions? Thanks!

It's a new Dell and it has been making crackling sound since I got it.
I spent an hour on the phone with a technician who restored the laptop with Windows 8.1 to an earlier point in time and it stopped crackling for the rest of the day, but the next day, the noise was back.
The worst are "ding" sounds, they have more crackle than ding. Video playback is bad but at least we can understand what is said. Youtube is bad. mp3 audio is bad. Crackle is there with earphones too.

Hello. If it made the noise right out of the box you probably should have returned it as defective during the brief return period.
Does it make the noise only when running on battery power or also when plugged into house current?

Did my searching and couldn't find this one...

When I modify the speaker volume using the "Volume Mixer" icon, it generates a sound. When I adjust using the "Speakers/Headphones" icon, it does not make a sound.
I would like to mute the Windows 7 sound that happens when I adjust the sound, preferably without effecting the other system sounds? I can't find out which system 'event' it is that causes a sound to be generated when I modify the speaker volume. I'd like to mute it, i.e. no sound when I change the volume.
thanks

Folks - I have two X1 Carbons sitting in front of me, both running Windows 8.1, trying to connect to my Samsung TV.The X1 Carbon (2014) has display corruption on WiDi, while the X1 Carbon (original) works fine. On the 2014 X1 Carbon, you get display corruption, and choppy squeaky audio every few seconds. With the original everything is smooth as silk. Any thoughts? I've already run Lenovo System Update on X1 Carbon (2014) as well as Windows Update, so everything is up to date. Don't know what else to try? Clearly, it's not the TV, nor the router, nor interference - since one machine works and the other doesn't... Thanks!

Does anyone know whether the displays of either the X1 Carbon or X1 Carbon Touch currently available on the Lenovo website are IPS, and if not, what panel type they are? The sales reps have told me conflicting things. On the product configuration screen, the display types are listed as 14.0" Premium HD+ (1600x900) LED Backlit Display, 720p HD Camera, No WWAN and 14.0" MultiTouch Premium HD+ (1600x900) LED Backlit Display, 720p HD Camera. No WWAN respectively. It's my understanding that in the past, the phrase "Premium HD+" has meant IPS. Also, if someone from Lenovo is reading this, could you please ask somebody in engineering who actually knows?

Answer:X1 Carbon / Carbon Touch Panel Currently IPS?

No, it is an outdated low resolution TN panel again with better than Lenovo usual almost zero contrast (below 150:1). Quote from Lenovo shop:Multitouch Premium ? Optimized for Windows 8, 10-finger touch on select ThinkPad models allows for fluid tablet-like interaction. Intuitive navigation enables browsing, scrolling, using apps, even gaming, with a simple swipe of the touchscreen. A capacitive touch panel trigger actions immediately, and the cursors follow your fingers around the screen without any perceptible lag or delays. Review http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-Touch-Ultrabook.89901.0.htmlLP140WD2 TLE2, TN LED, Contrast: 885:1

Hello,Is there any way to replace the keyboard of X1C 3rd gen with the keyboard of 2nd gen?

Answer:keyboard of X1 Carbon 2nd gen on X1 Carbon 3rd gen

Quote from this thread:
Gen 2 keyboard has 2 inputs: Dynamic Function Board (DFB)(5pin) + power button (3pin) ---> 8pin on MB side, and regular keyboard. However, Gen 3 keyboard's Fn is integrated to keyboard cable but not 8pin input (only 3 pin power button). Embeded Controller Chip (EB) is still taking this as Gen 2 input. So Fn is not mapped at EC level. Since EC is part of UEFI BIOS, you need remove BIOS chip from MB and reprogram the EC firmware to make it work.
HiI own a X1 Carbon Gen 2 thinkpad and wonder if it is possible to replace the current keyboard with a X1 Carbon gen 3 keyboard (with proper mouse buttons), or if it will not fit?I have tried to check the manuals and the connectors seems similar although some things, such as the fingerprint reader, seems different. I have no problem "loosing" the adaptive keyboard and fingerprint reader if I can have all the functionality of the keyboard and trackpoint on the new "keyboard" (i.e. the gen 3 frontpanel).

Answer:X1 Carbon Gen 3 Keyboard on X1 Carbon Gen 2

I am interested in this exact topic as well. Looks like the Gen 3 keyboards lack the adaptive keyboard - that clear stripe on the top that changes. The FRU for these X1 Carbons seem to be the whole keyboard, adaptive part, trackpad and bezel - they go for 150 USD or so. Problem is we don't know if it will work given the model year differences. A nice alternative would be just to replace the trackpoint. They came close with this one, but it is no macbook in terms of tactile feel of the pad. I really am having a hard time with it and it's been about a month.  Lenovo please help!

Hi i just noticed my monitor sometimes makes a high pitch whistling soound, should i be worried?

Is it like (this might sound stupid) leaking radiation waves or something which could be dangerous to me?

Answer:My monitor makes a sound!?!!?!

This is very common on all TVs and also large-screen monitors. The integrated high-voltage transformer (IHVT) has windings that are laminated in place under the black surface skin. Through age, heat, and vibration, the laminations deteriorate. What you get are 15KH noises that a lot of people…can't even hear. The reason you hear it coming and going is that different brightness [settings] require different currents through the transformer, [which] causes the laminates to start singing. You need a new IHVT.

This sound usually indicates that the monitor is on its way to equipment failure. I believe that a new or refurbished monitor is your best option, unless by chance, your monitor is still under warranty.

For your safety i would like to note......Do not open the monitor!
Computer monitors are a prime example of hardware that should be serviced only by qualified technicians. The electricity that builds up inside these units can kill you, plain and simple. Furthermore, even unplugged, monitors pose a serious threat; it can take days for the electric charge to dissipate from within one.

I suspect this is a hard drive idling. I have Win8.1 installed on one HD and opensuse on another HD. When I am using the Win8.1, sometimes I get a hissing sound from the case. The sound that the hardware makes when I shutdown the system, except there is no shutdown, no error, no flickering of the screen.

I see a lot of threads on other forums suggesting that this is a PSU issue. I hope that my brand new Corsair is not to blame. The last reply on this page suggests that it is the secondary drive shutting down to conserve energy. I would be perfectly fine with that but is there any case that going on-off it damages the drive? Should I cut the power to the drive completely?

Answer:PC makes shutdown sound

HI Sailor, long time not chat.

I would check in the power options and set the HDDs to always on (especially if a desktop PC) and location is Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings

Then scroll down the list to Hard Drives and set to always on > apply and reboot and test.

Welcome to Tech Support Guy

The first thing is to download and install SP3 as soon as possible
Support for XP with SP2 has finished and did so on July 13 2010
That means that no security updates etc have been offered to you since then

You may well find that SP3 will solve the issue for you

As you cannot of course connect you have two choices - one sort out the connection
1. If it is the wireless that will not connect - connect it hard wired from the ethernet port on the laptop
Also ensure that wireless is stwiched on on the Dell - usually Fn plus an F key

OR if you cannot

2. Download SP3 to another computer and then install to the Dell
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=24

I know it says do not use on one computer but it will still work and t MAY solve the connection problem for you

3. If you are on broadband and you refer to the modem, as the modem/router provided by the ISP eg BT etc then it does not make a sound
If you refer to the modem in the computer that WAS used for a dial up connection and is not used on broadband
The computer has a modem port where a telephone line was connected for dialup and a ethernet connection I would think, where the line is connected for broadband from the modem/router provided by your ISP BT etc

YOU MUST not connect to the wrong port on the laptop

Additionally I cannot find a Dell Vostra 100 laptop where are you please as some models are only available in some areas
If by chance it is the Vostra 100... Read more

Hello,

For a while my computer have been making a electric leak like sound whenever the CPU usage gets high. However, lately it started to make it more often. For example with anti-virus searches and malware search softwares, the CPU usage goes up to 80 percent and this weird noise comes from the CPU.

This sound sample i have recorded for you to picture the sound. This was recorded with microphone very near to CPU. The background humming noise comes from the fan, but I am very certain that this leak-like sound does not come from fan because it does not have a specific pattern and only occur with high CPU uges. The CPU usage was around 80% in this recording.

rapidshare.com/files/336732081/buzzyNoise.mp3

For information, my configurations are:

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
2 GB RAM
Motherboard MSI 915P/G Neo2 Platinium ed.

so not that bad.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:CPU makes an electric leak like sound

P4 has always been a power hungry CPU, that said, I'd say you better check your PSU first, is it providing correct voltage on all the rails?

As of a day ago my pc won't start. I hit the power button, lights turn on on the tower, the monitor shows nothing, and there is a very quiet repetitive buzzing sound coming from the speaker on the motherboard. I think it buzzes six times and then nothing. I can then hit the power button again and all the lights instantly turn off.
Yesterday I opened it up and blew it out (it was VERY dusty) but that didn't help.
Any ideas?

Answer:PC won't start and makes buzzing sound

Try another power supply.

First time when i used Privazer I experienced the Hell Side of my pc, Luckilly i had creaded a Privazer restorepoint and registry backup before the cleanup action was initiated. U can re-enable hibernation in the Advanced option >>Memory Indexing, followed by unchecking pagefiles.sys , this woul help regain some strength of ur pc. It will regain its speed after a few start ups as the cache memore is to be refilled.

IT sounds like a new web page is openedIT only makes this noise when i am connected to the internetMy OS is windows 7, HP 620, internal ram is 2gb. Using SuperAntiSpyware and Norton internet security also spybot search and destroy.

Answer:My laptop makes a clicking sound on its own

SAS and Spybot are both antispyware and you should not use them both. Secondly, Spybot is outdated so you should keep SAS and add another anti malware software  http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free. Make sure to uninstall Spybot then try making a full scan on SAS and Mbam alternately after updating both security softwares.

The title explains the problem. I can't find anything that would set this off. Everything else seems normal. It's been doing this all morning. Probably, if I reboot, it'll stop - but I want to find the source of the 'bing.' How can I trace it down?

Answer:My PC makes a sound (bing) every five minutes

Not the typical tick, but may be the HD. Go to the website of your HD mfg and give the hd a test.

Hi there,

I have a problem with my Satellite M40X
Sometimes the fan makes odd sound, something like it had problem with moving
something like 'wrrrrr' and then it stops making the noise and works normally
What can be wrong ?

I also noticed that if I close the windows abnormally and restart it the fan is working full speed all the time
no matter how busy CPU is,
What can be the reason ?

Many Thanks

Answer:Fan of Satellite M40X makes sometimes odd sound

Hi mate,

doesn?t sound very healthy. I assume that your FAN has a serious problem and I think before starting a long discussion about it would be the best that you contact a authorized service partner in your country and send your machine to them since your problem is really hardware-related.

To find the nearest service center in your country follow this link:

i got my x300 in September, today I am getting that weird clicking sound every few seconds from SSD area, could it be SSD fan get stuck?

Answer:X300 SSD makes clicking sound

there isn't a fan in the SSD.   the noise is either coming from the system fan (which is in the left rear corner) or something else.

I have a Western Digital 80GB/ 8MB cache hard drive and it makes a sound on boot. I just formatted the drive to zeroes with Dianostics Lifeguard Tools from WD and installed win xp pro with sp1. It sounds like the arm or what you call it is grinding or something. It happens when POST is done and the MBUltra133 BOIS tries to detect and when the screen goes to windows xp screen it sounds like the arm is at one side then rushes to the other side. It only make this sound at this point and never anywhere else. I have 90% free space and I just defraged it and still makes this sound. Is the drive needing to be replaced or do hard drives make this sound at this point normally.

Whenever I run a certain video game, 5 minutes into it, an internal speaker repeatedly makes two annoying beeps, the first one is a high pitched beep followed by a lower pitched beep. It sounds like an old police siren. If anyone can tell me how to stop this I would be very grateful.

Answer:Need help with an annoying sound that my computer makes

Not really suited for the security forum so pm a moderator and ask it to be moved to hardware as it may be a heat issue on the processor.

Yesterday everything worked fine. After waking up and wanting to look at a video, it just started making loud noises and you couldn't make anything out what was being said or played.
Then i switched to my headphones, but the same thing happens there.

Hello everybody, first of all my apologizes for my approximative English, i haven't studied it for long and i don't use any translator. So why i post here ? Simple i searched since last week first on French forums and now here because i have no more options to solve my problem, i'm about to reinstall xp, this is the last chance i accord to this windows 7 ultimate "issue".

My laptop is a lenovo y510 with a sound chipset using the "realtek high definition audio drivers", on xp sp3 the quality was perfect, on w7 it's a mess. First there is a delay, for example i open a folder, i test the audio on the task bar, etc the sound takes approximatively +0.5 second to active himself, except when i play a continuous sound (music/video) here the sound appears in the normal delay, very strange...

Second problem, static, crackling, i can't listen music or any kind of sounds while i'm working (maximize a window, scroll a word/excel document, etc...).

Third problem, the worst, my onboard speakers (5.1) ALWAYS create crackling at the begging and at the end of any sounds, even when i plug the external speakers, and if i up the volume of my external at nearly maximum i can here the sound from my onboard too (weak but present) !

I tried everything people advised me, all drivers from 1.84 to 2.47 (include different compatibility) and windows updates ones, disable power management, powermizer, tried everything on the control panel in sounds settings, flash the bios, update ... Read more

Answer:Sound problem makes me crazy...

Some news, end the process audiodg.exe completely fix the whole problem...

I guess now this will be easier to answer, is this process vital for security or something like that ? How can i disable him from the start ? I don't want at any boot go to the task manager and end him manuely...

Thanks

Hello! Registered to ask help with this problem. My computer has been making odd buzzing sound under stress for some time now. It happens usually when I try to play newer games but sometimes just using web browsing or Youtube induce lesser sounds. I've changed CPU cooler, GPU and memory sticks during this time, and that hasn't changed the situation. Here's a recording of the sound: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0lzb1fnc9RK

I moved the phone around to locate the source of the sound and I think it's coming from bottom half, below GPU, possibly near PSU. Is there anyway to test if it's the PSU?

I'd appreciate the help, this has been bugging me for quite some time. I know I shouldn't wait around with a computer making disturbing noice, but what can I say.

(One detail I noticed is that Speccy gives my memory sticks speed as 933MHz when is should be double that.)

Ok, so I know what I've done is kinda stupid, but I'm a noob at hardwares so it just happened lol. Here is my problem: I opened up my pc today to clean it a bit. I'm 100% sure i haven't moved anything and haven't touched any important parts of the chips and stuff when doing it. Except for one of the fans, I removed it to be able to remove the dust. There's been some panel under it that i got curious about (I didn't know it's the CPU), and just removed the cover and took out the processor lol. After taking a look at it I put everything (including the CPU) back the EXACT same way it has been before, plugged in the power cable and tried to boot the system. But now all it does is making a steady beeping sound (short beeps, it ends when i switch off the computer), screens are black. The fans are working though.

So I suppose this problem is related to the fact that I messed with the CPU, but I swear I've put everything back the way it was before. Please, if anyone knows a solution for this problem, help me.

My CPU is an Intel Core 2 duo E4500.

Answer:PC makes beeping sound after I messed with CPU

remove the memory stick and clean it using a rubber eraser , then put it back in , hope this help

Anyone know if its normal for a cpu to make a quiet ticking sound when ac power is plugged in. This happens even with the bare motherboard/cpu on the bench with nothing else attached. It's a laptop, the machine died with no warning. Before disasembly there were no lights or any other activity when plugged in; could
hear this ticking sound, and took apart to find out what was making it.
I've never noticed a cpu by itself to make noise before.
Thanks in advance for any info.

UPDATE:
I removed the cpu and "YES" its still making the sound without it.
Anyway, I removed the cmos battery and left it overnight. After reassembling the laptop now the disk drive light comes on steady as soon as its plugged in. Still wont start. Light goes out a couple seconds after power disconnected. Now I dont hear the ticking sound anymore as well. Maybe its a bios problem.

Answer:CPU makes a quiet ticking sound

no the CPU isnt supposed to make any noises at all. Seeing as there are no moving parts in a CPU, the only reason it would be making a 'ticking' noise, is if you are actually hearing an electrical spark, which of course is bad news.

Hey guys.

Recently purchased a Gainward GTX 570 Phantom. When I start the computer up it makes a strange "clicking" noise. There are no loose cables or anything...+the gainward phantom fans are covered anyway!. I tried replacing its slot from pcie_1 to pcie_2 and same thing occured.

When I first bought it made the sound for about 30 mins. After I installed drivers and unistalled old AMD drivers and the let the computer run for a bit, the noise stopped.

However when I start the computer up now, for about the first minute I hear the same clicking noise>

I want to ask if is this something to be concerned about? Do some fans just sometimes make weird noises while "warming up"? I used GPU-Z and fan speeds+temp. seem perfect.

(P.S I have warranty, but I already had to RMA my last KFA2 GTX 570 and replace it with this last week, so unless its a potentially bad thing I dont really want to RMA it.)

Answer:GPU makes Clicking Sound On Startup

Well its not a normal sound so you definitely need to be concerned. There may be something in one of the fans or one of the fans may be faulty. Or it may be a power issue.

What is the brand, model, and wattage of your power supply?
