Purchased this Lenovo ThinkCentre new in 2014. Warranty expired 12/1/2016, just received a hardware error concerning storage devices. I do not have any storage device because I purchased an external hard drive in the past but couldn't figure out how to operate it to back up files and ended up returning it. Am requesting advice on purchasing and using a simple storage device in hopes that this "might" fix the hardware error(?) While the computer is still working fine (except for occasional blue screens while my husband is playing computer games), I'm worried about this hardware "failure." Does anyone have some advice for me?

Preferred Solution: Lenovo ThinkCentre Hardware Problem Re: Storage Devices

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey Guys, 1st post on this forum.  I have a question regarding online cloud storage password information regarding Lenovo Support Center.  I already had Norton 360 downloaded for 3 pcs license I had purchased before we had the M93P tower shipped to us.  It is redundant to have both Norton 360 and Lenovo Support Center to store passwords.  Is there any way to disable that feature on Lenovo Support Center?  Every time I enter in a new one, it prompts me to save it, or enter my Windows password to log in, which is incredibly annoying and frustrating.  Let me know if there is a work-around to this.

Hi,

When I try to access any removable storage device (DVD, pendrive, memory stick using a flash card reader) on my Windows Vista Business, I always get a "access is denied" message. And now all the removable devices listed on Windows have a red "not allowed" symbol (as you can see here: http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/8504/problemadc4.jpg )

I believe the problem started when Windows froze while the computer was reading a memory stick, so I had to reboot it using directly the power button. Before that, everything was working fine (and they're still working under Linux).

I have already tried to reinstall both the flash card reader and the dvd drive, and it didn't help. I did a chkdsk too. My guess is that it has something to do with the removable storage manager or something like that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Problem with removable storage devices

On the keyboard, press the windows key + r, in the run box, type gpedit.msc, click ok, expand Administrative Templates, System, Removable Storage Access. Check if any policies are configured. Under CD and DVD: Deny Read Access, and : Deny Write Access, try disabling them. Reboot any see if access is allowed now to the DVD drive.

I have a card reader installed on my PC but for some reason the individual slots are not being displayed in the my computer window. I have checked the removable storage console window and although the generic entries are there, each entry has a red cross on it. On putting a card into one of the slots I cannot see it either. Any help with this problem would be much appreciated.

Answer:Removable Storage Devices problem

Uninstall and reinstall all the items under USB in device manager.

So I have this weird problem with my PC where any sort of removable storage or music device I connect to my PC through any USB port, shows up saying that it needs to be reformatted and then if I try to reformat it it says that it cant do it.

I have tried this with 2 flash drives that work on other computers and an Ipod that is perfectly fine. It says that the Ipod is corrupt or something and wont work on Windows.

Obviously there is something wrong with my PC, but I'm not sure where the problem is coming from. I already have a USB mouse and a USB cord for my keyboard that I leave plugged in permanently and they dont seem to be effected. It seems like anything that is showing up on my PC as a storage device or drive, automatically needs to be reformatted but I cant actually do it.

This is a real problem, I need to be able to move files on a flash drive for school and its currently not possible. thank you in advance for any advice.

Vista Home Premium on a Sony VAIO laptop. Here's the deal: none of the storage devices work. The DVDRW, the SD slot, and the MMC slot. They all appear in My Computer with their correct respective icons, but that's it. If you pop in a CD/DVD nothing happens. If you pop in an SD card nothing happens. You can even have the DVDRW drive tray open, double click the icon, and all that happens is the 'please wait' spinning circle appears (the Vista equivilent of the XP hourglass) and that's it. The PC at this point is basically locked up until you use the task mgr to end the Computer process. The same thing happens when I click on the SD or MMC. It doesn't matter if there's a card in the slot, or CD/DVD in the drive, the PC just stops responding. The device manager is clean and all drivers are installed. The DVDRW drive IS mechanically functional 'cuz I can boot from it to any number of boot CDs. The owner of this laptop was very boisterous and assertive about NOT losing any of her data, including cookies (?!?!?!?). I guess she uses different passwords for just about everything and can't remember them all, so she has 'em cookied. Not a great idea IMHO, but whatever. So, how to go about this storage device issue?
:crybaby
Thanks.

HI, I'm having a problem with my mass storage devices. I updated my bios on my Asus z87 pro motherboard and since I did any of my usb sticks or WD My Passport wont open... PC says it tries to download drivers but can't. It sees the unlock disc for WD My Passport but wont let me open it and has the yellow exclamation mark by it in the device manager. As for the usb sticks.. they don't even show up even though they do in the bios page and they make a sound when you slot one in to a usb port.. so I don't think its the ports. especially as other items like flight yoke, pedals and mouse etc all work in the various usb ports.. its just the mass storage devices. I have looked at the files you suggested might not be there (as above) and all are. so bit lost as to what to do.

Any ideas?

Answer:Having a problem with my mass storage devices

Hello, Stevey!

I think the issue you are facing is due to faulty installation of drivers.
The yellow exclamation mark in the device manager indicates that there's some kind of system or driver issue.
You mentioned you updated the bios on your motherboard, but did you update the drivers for it as well?

I suggest to take a look at these links:

In case you forgot the motherboard drivers update:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z87PRO/HelpDesk_Download/
You can try running the fixit from the following Microsoft article:
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/
Another thing you can try is running the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter and check if it works:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Hardware-and-Devices-troubleshooter
Or refer to this WD article that explains how to change the drive letter of the external drive and see if it helps: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/137

If you need further assistance, let me know.
Hope this helps.

Recently, my Pentium 4, Windows XP SP2 developed a very strange problem and I am hoping someone can help me. I was transferring some AAC files(legal) by my PNY attache 512 MB thumbdrive to my desktop. On plugging the thumbdrive into my desktop, it would no longer recognize the thumbdrive. It asked me to format the drive. So I permitted it to format the drive but it said it couldn't complete the format.

Here is what I tried so far in order and I still get the same message.

Right clicked on the thumbdrive and clicked on properties - device working fine but listed the file system as raw, tried to update the drivers but no new ones available. Tried roll back of drivers and did not roll back.
Rebooted the desktop - same message.
Plugged the same thumbdrive into my labtop - works just fine on the labtop (windows XP SP2) and on the desktop I have at work (Pentium 3 windows XP SP1).
Tried different USB ports on my desktop computer. I do have a D-Link USB 1.1 hub attached. I plugged the thumbdrive directly into the USB ports in the back of the computer - same message.
Formatted the USB drive on the labtop and then plugged into my desktop.
Purchased a new USB thumbdrive Sandisk - same message.
Device manager says the device is working fine. Tried to update the drivers - told me that there isn't a better match.
Deleted the USB drivers in the Device manager, reboot, let Windows reinstall the drivers - same message.
Updated the USB drivers in the Device manager.

Hello everyone, it's my first post on that forums, forgive me if I don't do it right.

So I have this problem with USB storage devices [This device cannot start. (Code 10) - in Device Manager]

It happens with a storage devices only (at least what I noticed). So every pendrive I connect is giving me this, and every external USB drive.

I have the other devices like mouse and keyboard or camera, these are working fine without errors or yellow exclamation mark.

I came here because I think I tried everything and failed, I even removed USB host only to discover I cannot log to windows or do anything because no usb device was responding - I had to recover from the last working configuration, and it saved me.

I want to fix it once and for good.

Anyone can help out?

We have several relatively new, unused Lenovo ThinkCentre MT-M 7373-AMU workstations that were recently donated to our senior center's home computer training center. The workstations have Windows Vista SP1 installed and are working fine under Vista. However, we are using the workstations to teach senior citizens how to operate home computers and need to install XP along with Vista in dualboot mode. Basically, these workstations will not accept Windows XP clean installs even on a dedicated hard drive. Attempts to perform a clean install of XP results in screen announcements that there are "compatibility issues" which probably have to do with the hardware configuration and/or the BIOS. Thanks.

I have a Dell XPS 8000 with a 4 in 1 card reader. I also have a DVD and a Blu Ray drive installed in the computer.

But in the descriptions in Computer, I get this:

BD-RE Drive (G SD/mini-MMS/RS
DVD RW Drive (H CF/MD

I have even moved the two drives off of the SATA ports built into the motherboard to a Startech SATA III PCI card, but this behavior continues. I have even deleted the 4 drives in device manager and had windows reinstall them. I have also unassigned and reassigned drive letters to the card readers. Nothing I have done fixes the situation completely.

The only progress I have made is that after moving the drives to the PCI card ports, I can put a disc into either drive and it will read it, and the description will change and drop the card reader description. But the other drive will keep the wrong drive description.

What can I do to fix this?

I use separate flash drives plugged into a USB port to backup data on my wife's pc and my Notebook. When my data is backed up, I click the Safely remove hardward icon on the taskbar and then click Stop USB Mass Storage Device. When I get the message I can safely remove the device, then I do so.

But, lately I have noticed the sately remove hardware icon on my wife's taskbar when I am not doing a backup and there is no flash drive in the USB port. When I click it open, I can then click it to stop and I get the saftely remove hardware message and the icon disappears as before. But, when the system starts up the icon appears.

I looked at USB ports in Device Driver and it shows there as Mass storage Device and says it is working properly. I am a little reluctant to hit the disable button as I am not sure if that is the right thing to do and if that would permanently disable that usb port or just the device it thinks is in there.

I am not sure what has caused this, unless perhaps once I forgot to run the safely remove device before physically removing the storage device. I have backed up since this problem, and all works well including running the stop storage device, but the icon keeps reappearing on startup.

Anyway, this is obviously not a huge problem, but I would like to understand what is going on and sort it out as everything else is working so well on both systems and I can actually say they seem even smoother and faster this last month with SP1.

Any thoughts ... Read more

And I disabled flash because that's what the pop up said wasn't working and eventually chrome froze too. Do you have a working recovery partition? So start the laptop and then press the blue Thinkvantage button on the keyboard, this should bring you to the recovery partition, where you have an option to do a recovery to earlier time.P.S. Do you have all the important files saved onto external HDD?

Hello,

I have two problems I need assistance with.

FIRST PROBLEM

1) I suddenly can't seem to generate a system health report with Vista. I
keep getting "an error occured while attempting to generate the report".
Before it worked now it does not. I always do a system health report almost
everyday. (I'm obsessed about the well being of my PC). I don't know what
triggered it, but here are some possible reasons I can think of:

A) I recently uninstalled my Mcafee trial software and then installed CA
Internet Security. I then received a series of Blue Screens. I quickly
uninstalled CA Internet Security and used Zone Alarm Free Firewall and AVG
antivirus. The operating system seems to be stable now (I haven't got a Blue
Screen since).

B) On July 25, 2007, I installed a recent update to Windows Vista. The
update is KB929547. (http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=929547).
Could this have something to do with it?

Some things I did to attempt fixing this problem myself include doing a
start up repair (using the F8 key before Windows loads). No problems found. I
did a Windows Memory test while I was there in the boot options. No problems
detected. I checked the hard drive for errors. No bad files and only a few
reparsed records.

The problem still exists.

SECOND PROBLEM

2) I was doing some snooping in the "System Information" section. Under
"Components" and then "Pro... Read more

Answer:Can't generate system health report + problem device in Hardware & Devices

The first thing I'd try is just doing a System Restore to a date when you know it worked. Run rstrui.exe

You can also test the issue in Safe Mode.

If not possible, look in the Event Viewer (run evenvtvwr.msc and see if you can get any further information there.

I have no idea what that device is -- if you look in the Device Manager, do you see anything flagged there? Run devmgmt.msc

Welcome to the Forums.

Your issue might be similar to this thread and your unit is most likely using Expresscache and not Intel Smart Response Technology for data caching.

To test if Expresscache s working, open a command prompt and type eccmd -info. It should return a result like this:

To get a list of options, type type eccmd.

Ok here's the problem, I have a Lenovo Thinkcentre M91p desktop which I was preparing to sell, first thing I wanted to do was to erase contents of hard drive first by using Derik's Drive Nuker disc however the problem started when the PC starts it doesn't show the "Lenovo" logo splash screen with the F-12 option to access BIOS, I needed to access bios so I can reboot with the dban disc to erase the hard drive when that option was not available I opened up "msconfig" and made the mistake of changing the system configuration from "Normal start up" to " Selective Startup" with only the " Use original boot configuration" option checked because I thought that would show me the splash screen on start up but, that wasn't the case.  After I did that and restarted the PC everything was horrible, not only wasn't I able to see the splash screen but, also Windows wouldn't even load.  On start up the PC doesn't show the Lenovo logo splash window, it goes straight to windows but it only shows the pre-screen that pops up before the log-in screen, the one with the background image and the time on the lower left but, that's it....if I click on that window instead of showing me the log-in window where I'm supposed to enter my password it only shows a blue screen.  Now I can't access BIOS to fix anything nor get into Windows.  I need help please! Answer:ThinkCentre: Stuck at Lenovo splash screen after lenovo solution bios upgrade

I would try resetting the BIOS using the jumper, or by taking out the CMOS battery, wait a minute or two, and then replace it and try booting up. See page 73 of the Hardware Maintenance Manaul linked below for location of the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper (# 20) https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/m83m93p_hmm.pdf Clearing the CMOS (BIOS)1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer. 2. Remove the computer cover. 3. Locate the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper on the system board. 4. Move the jumper from the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2) to the maintenance position (pin 2 and pin 3). 5. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. 6. Turn on the computer and leave it on for approximately 10 seconds. Then, turn off the computer by holding the power switch for approximately five seconds. 7. Repeat step 1 through step 2. 8. Move the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper back to the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2). 9. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. Good Luck,

I've been using Win10 since the general release. This was an update install on a Win7 laptop.
Apart from a few issues (waking from sleep on scheduled tasks, lack of control on updates) I have a problem with external devices.
If I use several USB flash drives/harddrive I'm able to eject one or two but then I can't eject any others. When this happens I don't get the menu option to eject/safely remove the device through "explorer" and the drive doesn't appear in the "safely remove" icon on the task bar. I can still access the drive without issue just don't have any way to eject except to shutdown the laptop. If I reboot the laptop but leave the device attached the eject option reappears.
The laptop is fully patched and I can't work out what is happening and google hasn't revealed any similar problems except the normal "device is in use" message.
Any ideas?

Do the flash drives show up on "This PC". Since you can access them I suspect they do. Have you tried right clicking on their icon and using the eject option?

How many Storage devices can you have on your PC?   Just for fun, let's say a storage device can be anything that will store some data after you turn the machine off. But the device must be a single thing, no fair dived your hard drive into 19 partitions, it is still just one device.  So how many do you think you could put on your PC?   Or maybe  any off the shelf single box that would fit on a desktop.   What popular OS would it run?  (Sorry, no prize offered. Just for informational purpose.)

Answer:Mass storage devices

Do they appear in my computer? If not, you may have a faulty usb port or ports, or faulty USB devices themselves (always use safely remove hardware when uplugging these, as failing to do so can ruin them)To test, borrow another device that you know is working, and try it on your machine.

I uninstalled the firewall, uninstalled the devices and their drivers. After reinstallation, they still do not work. I am afraid to reformat as the A drive doesn't read. Both the cdrom and dvdrom will play audio disks and the LiteOn will record disks using Nero. Help!!

I had to guess as to your O/S,version of firewall but you will find with large companys like Symantec their knowledge base support can often solve problems .Try this page;

I have 2 hard drives, 1 of which has 2 partitions. I have these two extra ones for some reason.
I think the Local Disk Q is from my USB which I disconnected when I powered off the system. Now whenever I click it, I get this

Anyone know how/if I can fix this?

Answer:2 Extra Storage Devices?

I believe the E and Q drives are part of your main drive. Partitions of the physical drive the C drive is on.
The H drive is a USB stick.

Not sure why the Q drive is not accessible other then it is a small partition and it is not formatted. But then it shouldn't show up.
The E drive is a normal system partition but it is usually at the front of the drive and normally does not have a drive letter assigned to it. Win 7 creates this area to store the BOOT loader files and some other system files.

Open Disk Management and post a screen shot of that.

I have a problem with a computer accesing usb storage devices be it usb drives or external hard drives.

This computer is running windows 7 professional 64 bit sp1 and this didn't start happening until about a week ago. Before this i had no trouble using storage devices. Computer model is an ultra small form factor hp elite 8200

I did a virus scan etc .. and everything came up clean. I did a system restore and it didn't make a difference. I haven't really installed anything that would cause issues.

when i insert a usb drive or external hard drive its detected in the system and even in the disk management section but i cannot access the drive data.

There is zero issues with these devices because i am using them in other computers without any problems. I tried all usb ports and its the same issue on all 8 i have , the ports are also NOT faulty as i plugged mouses and keyboards and verified they work, its just usb storage devices that it won't allow me to access.

Normally when i would insert one i would get a windows tab saying if i want to use the drive as a back up or explorer the files, or at the very least it would show up in my computer under a drive letter, in this case it shows no drive letter at all but i can see it in the disk management section as healthy.

I obviously don't want to mess with the hard drive itself or usb drives as they have crucial work and personal data besides its only this specific computer that has this issue.

I had a back up of some files on my memory stick.A few months later (last week) I had a major virus problem which locked me out of the computer, just cycling between log in, log off, log in, log off.Someone cleaned the computer for me and I was able to log in.  I got a lot of filles off the computer onto CD's and some on my memory stick. After that, I saw more viruses were on the computer and it has now shut down and won't reboot.  It wasn't really cleared of viruses at all.But my question is:  Do you think I can get from my memory stick the older files I put there before the files I put on it that may have a virus?  Is it possible the virus, if now on the memory stick, could somehow effect the older files that did not have viruses? Can they move across? My plan is to use an old computer to read the files on the memory stick, drag or copy the one file I really need to a cd by itself.  Then scan the CD.  I had to buy a new computer and am scared to infect it.  But need to continue working on this file which is a part time job.

Try formatting the card. You will lose all of the information on the card but it should fix the problem. If it does not your card is probably shot. Hope this helps.

When I open My Computer, under Devices With Removable Storage,it has 6 entries. They are Floppy Disk Drive [A]---Removable Disk [F]---Removable Disk [H]---DVD RW Drive [E]---Removable Disk [G]---Removable Disk . I know how to use Drive [A],and DVD RW Drive [E]. I have only on drawer to place a Disk, So how would you burn? Also with the 4 removable Disk,How would you use them? I have an Acer Computer. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

Answer:Devices With Removable Storage

The number of removable drives has nothing to do with the steps for burning a CD. You haven't done this before?

The removable drives are probably assigned to various flash media slots.

In Vista, in My Computer under "devices with removable storage" for some reason there are some drives listed that were not there before:

DVD RW Drive (D this is always showing now but only used to when I actually had a disc inserted if I remember correctly

BD-ROM Drive (F
BD-ROM Drive (G

these 2 were never there before and don't know why they are there now. Nothing happens when I hit eject on these 2 and when I dbl click it just asks me to insert a disc. How do I make these disappear and why are they there?

I'm having issues with my computer recognizing any sort of mass storage device. Most of the time when a problem comes up I have no problem figuring it out unless it's a laptop hardware issue - that's a nightmare.

Anyway I've tried to plug in a USB Jump Drive (128 MB) and an External USB Hard Drive (80 GB) and both devices are recognized but Win XP Pro can't find drivers for them and they should already have drivers in Windows according to the manufacturer. Heck I use the jump drive at work on a number of different systems and it works just fine. I suspect maybe a bios setting is off or perhaps another USB device is causing interference for mass storage devices. I had one case where I tried to play a game and my keyboard was causing it to crash.

Context - I am planning to take a gopro on holiday, I plan to take an external hard drive to clear the device daily and safely store all photos and videos.
To move the files from the microsd card to the hard drive I plan on buying a lenovo thinkpad that only has 32gb of internal memory.
The question - Due to the low file size of the thinkpad I wondered if its possible to have the two storage devices plugged in at the same time but move the photos/videos directly from one to the other without having to put any files on the thinkpad itself.
Any other suggestions on how to move files onto an external hdd without the need for an internet connection are welcomed.

I upgraded my computer from 98SE to XP pro and ever since my computer won't recognize things that XP innately should. For example, my Sandisk memory stick, my MP3/cell phone and my SD card reader. All those work fine on my other computers, but not the computer I want it to. XP recognizes the name of the device and it prompts the install hardware wizard, however it never finds the drivers. The devices show up in device manager as question marks, but I can't access them as storage devices. Help please.

I use a USB card reader and a USB memory drive, both of which are USB 2.Until recently, whenever they were inserted into the USB slot an arrow icon appeared in the taskbar which would allow me to close the USB device before removing it(otherwise windows gave a warning about not removing the device in case of data loss). I have since had to reload the USB drivers and now this arrow icon only appears now and again. If it appears and I remove the device without closing it first the same warning comes up as before. But if it doesn't appear I can remove the device with no warning and, it would seem, no damage or loss of data.Anybody know why this icon now only appears occasionally and will it damage the drive when it's removed without closing?Incidentally, I'm using Win ME and prior to reloading the USB drivers it never happened.

my usb sticks have all stopped working recently ive tried them in different usb ports and all have the same error. im guessing this is more to do with windows and not my sticks because i have several of them and they all cant have broken at the same time.

anyway the message i get when i try to access the memory stick is

"the disk in drive "drive letter" is not formatted do you want to format it now?"

i clicked yes one time but it said windows couldnt complete the format for some reason.

anyone know whats going on?

thanks

Answer:[SOLVED] usb storage devices

Try one of the non-working usb sticks in another computer to confirm it works fine first. Make sure that other computer you'll try it to has an up-to-date antivirus, in case this could be malware related.

Go in the device manager : start => run => devmgmt.msc. Any warning message there about your usb devices ? Unplug all the usb devices you could have attached (use a ps/2 keyboard and mouse), right-click => uninstall all the usb controllers in the device manager. Restart windows and they'll get redetected.

Hi everybody,

I'm having a big problem in the last 2 days, with my hp desktop: anytime I plug an USB storage device (be it my MP3 player or a USB key), as the PC is trying to autoplay the thing (an operation that usually took 2 seconds) XP just freezes. blue screens, no error messages: it just freezes on the desktop. The autoplay process does not even start, it seems like as the PC is attempting to access the device, it freezes. This is strange, since

- both devices had never given any problem before
- they both work on my laptop

Alright, so here's my problem:
My Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop hasn't had any problems in the past as far as USB storage is concerned. But recently it's developed problems being able to read these devices. It's only storage devices like flash drives and my external HD - my mp3 player and my cell phone can still hook up to it without problems. Also, new "Local Disks" are showing up.. There's my original "C:" HD, my backup "D:" HD that came with the laptop, and now there's also a "F:" and "G:" that show up- I looked on PC Inspector to see what they were and it appeared they are Dell setup partitions called "DellUtility" and "DellRestore".

Anyways, when I plug in a USB storage device, it doesn't bring up the "what do you want me to do with this thing?" autoplay that XP normally does when you put something into it. When I go to My Computer and click on the removable drives ( usually H: or I: ), it says "The disk in drive _ is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" and I have tried formatting it since I don't have any valuable information on my flash drive but it still doesn't fix the problem.

I've tried looking up myself how to fix this problem but I'm only finding bits and pieces of information on similar problems but nothing has helped. I'm hoping someone here has an idea of what I might do because now I can't use... Read more

Hi I Just made a new computer and every thing is working great. Jut one thing that is a little Irritating. When I click on my computer and you see Devices with Removable Storage. I see 31/2 floppy (A), DVD- Ram Drive (D), Removable Disk (F), Removable Disk (G), Removable Disk (H), Removable Disk (I), Removable Disk (J). My old computer would show just the floppy and the DVD but the rest would not show until you put in the USB stick or the SD card in then it would show up.

This way it is easier to identify witch one you have put in. Other wise It it is looking like this Removable Disk (M) then if your not looking good you will have to click on all of them.

Is there a way to do this?

How to Avoid Problems with USB Storage Devices
Updated May 2, 2010If you're having USB drive problems, also see: Troubleshooting Guide Windows Won't Recognize Your USB Hard Drive

Do's and dont's to avoid problems with USB Storage Devices

Don't: ?Surprise? Windows by unexpectedly removing your USB storage device
=> USB storage devices are "hot pluggable". This means you can plug them in any time but does not mean you can simply unplug and/or power them off anytime!
=> !!Never, ever!! unplug a USB storage device before first either stopping the device using Safely Remove Hardware icon or shutting down Windows
=> Unplugging unexpectedly may corrupt your storage device and result in partial or total data loss!!
The Safely Remove Hardware icon
You'll find it among the notification area icons along the bottom right of your Windows Desktop

=> Notification Area icons appear on the right side of the Windows Task Bar
=> The Task Bar normally appears along the very bottom of your screen

The Safely Remove Hardware application informs Windows you intend to remove a device. This gives Windows an opportunity to prepare for the removal by taking steps such as halting data transfers to the device and unloading device drivers. Removing hardware from a running system without using the Safely Remove Hardware application, is referred to as ?surprise removal?

A friend of mine asked me to fix her Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop. "What's wrong with it?" I asked. "It's broken," she said.

So I boot it up into XP Media Center SP2 without any problems and plug in the 2GB Kingston DataTraveler that has all my Windows System utils. I'm met with an error.

USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.Click to expand...

Well, that's not a very helpful. I click the message, and a window pops up showing the USB Root Hub item, where it says that the fourth USB slot is an "Unknown Device." Curiously, there are a total of 8 listed USB slots when there are only four physical female ports on the laptop. I open up the Device Manager, uninstall all drivers under the USB Controller section, and restart XP.

When it loads back up, it has the same problem. Now, I start testing the different ports and experience some curious results. No matter which port I plug in the pen drive first, the same message pops up. However, if I quickly take it out and plug it in somewhere else, Windows occasionally "finds" the DataTraveler 2.0, but still says that there was an error installing the device and won't let me access it via My Computer. One more interesting thing: Device Manager occasionally identifies the existence of a "Generic volume" named ... Read more

Hi, I recently bought a fairly high spec refurbished computer from a school clearance sale and I am now wanting to use it to be the basis of a simple media center. The problem I am facing Is that it wont recognize my mass storage devices (memory sticks and an external HD) through the USB ports. It Knows they are there because it will show me the names but it wont install them automatically and brings up the 'Install New Hardware Wizard' I've tried using this but it will reach the end of the installation and then say Invalid data. I have checked with the drivers on my laptop and there are the same ones on the new PC.
I am aware that some schools deliberately block USB storage devices for a variety of reasons so I googled my problem. It came back telling me that to disable/Enable USB ms devices there is a simple registry tweak, to change the DWord "start" value to 4-disable or 3-enable which is located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR,
However, when I checked in RegEdit there was no USBSTOR directory at all. I have many questions,
Does this directory exist as a default or is it something that is added for this tweak?
Is there another way of disabling the USB for hardware other than mouse and keyboard? If so how can it be reversed?
Thankyou

Vista runs the "new hardware found" wizard when I connect my External WD hard drive and my Sony DSLR Digital Camera. It is looking of a driver. Both of the "mass storage units" work fine on my XP boxes. WD or Sony both say no driver is needed except the one windows should already have. All my usb hubs have been checked out and have the latest updates and my Vista is completely updated. The "Details " say it's looking for a PNP driver. My Sandisk memory stick however works okay with the Vista system.

Any ideas how to fix this? This is a new computer and runs Vista Home Premium 32.

The usual RX is to go into Device Manager, View, Hidden Devices, and remove ALL the stuff under USB Controllers, then reboot. See if that helps the situation.

I can't access the data on USB storage devices or camera cards. The USB ports work fine with keyboards and mice, and when I opened the "Safely remove hardware" window I noticed that cards and USB hardware are listed but the generic volumes have no drive letter in parentheses. Despite this I have a USB hard drive plugged in that does work, appearing as drive G:. None of them show up in the Storage section of the Computer Management tool.

Let me know if any additional information is needed.

For the record I'm running Windows XP Home on a laptop I purchased used, though this issue didn't develop until over a full year after I purchased it.

Move the KB & Mice to the ports that seem to fail and try again.

My last Thinkpad W500 had an option in the BIOS for the Hard Drive password.  I see no option in the P70 UEFI Firmware.  Does the Supervisor password automatically  send a password to the storage devices?  If so, does it work through the Intel RST RAID1 as well? I'm running four storage devices in my P70.  Two Samsung 850 EVO M.2 using the Intel RST RAID1 for UEFI, Windows, and /boot for Linux, and two 960GB SanDisk SSD's for my Linux rpool ZFS mirror. It would just be nice to know for certain that the passwords are enabled on the drives now as well.

Answer:P70 Supervisor Password For Storage Devices

Supervisor password is not related to HDD password.

From my quick check here, as long as "RAID Mode Option" is set as "Enabled" and "M.2 SSD" (regardless of whether drives are configured in an array or not), the HDD password option goes away.

I need to ask a BIOS guy about this.

I know of plenty that you install on the PC that can do it, but I'm not aware of any solutions that involve a flash/USB type device that will perform the same function.

hello i am running on a win XP system. i problem is that when i connect my memry stick to usb port it picks up the stick, but i believe it is picking it up incorrectly for example i am fairly sure my MP3 player is not supposrt to go under the catgory of 'disk drives' and should go at the buttom with 'universal serial bus controllers'.

this is hapeening with all usb storage devices, my mouse and keyboard seem to be uneffected by this though.

another thing i would also like to point out is that on 'my computer' the HDD(C) drive is showing with a wireless icon, this also baffles me.

please dont mention the start bar, i find it 20X easier when i have lots of windows open and lots of msn contacts spamming me.

i thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.

I would like to restrict certain USB removable storage devices from an un-networked Windows XP Professional SP3 desktop. This is the sort of system where a virus or other malware would be very inconvenient.

I would like to allow certain USB hard drives to have read-write-whatever privileges, all other USB removable storage devices to get no privileges, and all other devices to be unaffected. I would like this to be applied to all three accounts (Administrator, Normal, and ASP).

The problem is, the hard drives will have to be replaced from time to time in order to minimise "spontaneous" failure. This means that the solution provided by Microsoft will not be ideal.

I can't use the "Administrator Only" functions because the owner shares the Administrator password with all of his employees. I have explained to him time and time again why this is a Very Bad Idea, and I don't know why I bothered.

If anyone has any ideas, they will be considered.

Answer:Restict Certain USB Removable Storage Devices

I went through something similar a few months ago trying to combat company espionage. The best I could do was prevent ALL USB storage or nothing. This was on a Win7 machine which has some built in policies for this. For Win XP I couldn't find one. All I have in my notes for XP is a registry key to disable USB storage devices globally. I'd be interested in hearing other ideas as well.

Although I am one of the many people who have not been able to activate Microsoft's Windows 10 upgrade icon and assistant, I am fairly confident that my W8.1 Tablet is OK for the new OS, except in one respect --- available storage. It only has a 32 GB SSD, most of which is taken up by Windows, leaving at present about 5 GB, whereas 16 GB free HDD space is required. I have been using a variety of strategies to reduce demands on the HD but so far without much success, in particular replacing desktop programs with portable programs on the integral Memory Card, using Cloud storage for files, and of course removing unnecessary programs / apps.

I have seen a brief 'rumour' that MS is working on ways to help owners of 'small devices' with restricted HD storage, Tablets and phones. Has anyone heard about this?

If I understand it right, once I have W10 on my Tablet my storage difficulties will be reduced as I will have greater ability to save and install everything including Store apps to different locations, such as a Memory Cards.

I welcome advice for those of us with 'small devices' who may be facing difficulties with getting W10 installed in the first place. For example, what are the pros / cons of the two methods: using update or using an ISO image?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP. For the past 4 months I have been using a Western Digital Passpart 160gb external hard drive. However just recently the laptop fails to recognize the hard drive. When I went to try the hard drive on other computers I got the same message. I thought it was just the hard drive but last night I connected my digitial camera and while the computer recognizes it was a camera, it could not read any of the pictures. I plugged the camera into another laptop - no problems. Plugged it back into my laptop -still not working. I later plugged it back into the laptop that it was working on- this time SAME PROBLEM as my Vaio.  Tried a 3rd computer that I had used the camera on the previous day SAME PROBLEM,  Nothing's wrong with the camera's memory card - I checked. USBs on it work as I am using a laptop cooler & optical mouse through USB.   Tried moving USB slots around.  Could it be that my Vaio laptop is ruining the HD & camera making them useable on other computers?  Any ideas as to what is going on and if the problem is reverseable?

Answer:My laptop hates my USB storage devices?!?!?!?

I may have a theory but I will need more information to confirm it....QuoteWhen I went to try the hard drive on other computers I got the same message. Do you mean that now, after you have connected to the Vaio, the Portable devices are no longer being recognized or what?Is there any message/error message?

I have an Aspire F15 with an M.2 SSD and a DVD writer. Because the bay that normally houses a hard drive is empty, I have installed a second SSD there. Now, here is my question: Can the F15 support yet another SATA storage device by replacing the DVD writer with an HDD/SSD caddy? That is one M.2 SATA device plus two additional SATA3 devices. Can it? Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:Can an Aspire F15 support 3 storage devices?

Hello, Could you give me the first ten characters of the computer serial number (S/N)? Only the first ten.Why not? As the DVD driver is already a SATA device, it should be supported. You just need the right HDD/SSD caddy.

Usb port of my laptop (compaq presario V3000 series) was working properly. But suddenly i noticed that my laptop hangs when it is connected with any storage device (pen drive or camera ). It seems that USB port is probably working well bcoz it does not create any problem when a printer or mouse is connected. CD drive is working fine.

I have uninstalled some newly installed programme or resored the system in earlier point. Please help me

So that's good!

Ok. Now i'm already on 32-bit version of Windows 7 and so far happy with that. The only hurting loss is RAM, but all other things seem to be perfect.

But still, i remember (just a couple of weeks ago!) myself having pain with my external HDDs, portable player and other devices. So here i am, posting TEMPORARY fix for this.

From an elevated command prompt (right click on the command prompt shortcut, run as administrator):
1) Type "bcdedit /set truncatememory 0x80000000" (no quotes)
2) Reboot
3) Go to control panel -> System and Security -> view amount of RAM and processor speed.
- It should report 4GB (2GB available)

To undo this, open an elevated command prompt again:
1) Type "bcdedit /deletevalue truncatememory" (no quotes)
2) Reboot
3) Go to control panel -> System and Security -> view amount of RAM and processor ... Read more

Hi,

I recently started seeing a problem on one of my laptops where all USB storage devices would mount but when I try to access them through explorer I get a warning saying the location is not accessible and access is denied.

The system can see the usb device, derive the name and file system type of the volume be it a pendrive or a kindle but I cannot access the files.

All of these devices work without issue on my other Windows 7 laptop.

I get this regardless of being logged in with a user has administrative permissions or standard user permissions.

The laptop is a DELL Latitude XT2 running Windows 7 Ultimate fully patched.

Any help much appreciated.

Answer:Access Denied on all USB Storage Devices

Hi,

Install the latest chipset driver from: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/NeedProductSelection?fkey=Drivers_PS

If the issue still persists, then try following the below mentioned steps:

1. Right click the drive.
2. Select Properties.
3. Press the Sharing Tab.
4. Select Advanced Sharing.
5. Put a check on "share this folder".
6. Press Permissions now that it is clickable because you put a check on share this folder box.
7. Under "Group or Usernames" there should be a default option of everyone. If it does not show this for you, press add and type Everyone.
8. Check all 3 boxes under Allow [full control, change read].

Hope this helps.

Iíve been banging my head against the wall due to a kindle touch/windows 7 issue.
Last week I had my computer re-imaged and now when I plug in the kindle via usb it doesnít show up under removable storage devices.
It does make the noise that you hear when plugging in a usb device, and I can see it under device manager, but not disk management.
Iíve tried to uninstall then reinstall kindle software, but when itís reinstalling it crashes by computer every time. I get the BSOD.
Iíve tried all of the simple troubleshooting I could think of. I thought giving it a file path under disk management might work but it isnít there. Iíve tried reinstalling usb drivers, using a different cable, resetting the kindle.
Oddly enough, my roommate has the exact same computer as me and we both got our computers reimaged at the same time and his kindle has the same problem.
I found a post from a user with a very similar problem:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...en-error/e886ffab-6275-4f78-b891-c764a86ba974

She even has the same computer as I do. But hers was resolved by updating an unrelated driver (acronis) and Iíve searched my computer and donít see anything like that.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I've posted this here before with no luck but I figured I'd try again.

Windows 7 is not allowing me to install USB Mass Storage Devices.

If I plug in my generic USB hard drive, I get the "Installing Device Drivers" balloon, and then it fails.

If I look at Device Manager it lists "Other Devices" and "USB2.0 Storage Device" with the yellow triangle icon next to it. If I manually choose drivers and have it look in \SYSTEM32, it says Windows found drivers for your device but an error occurred during installation. USB Mass Storage Device The System Cannot find the file specified.

Interesting notes: I have VMware Workstation installed. If VMs are running (XP or 7) THEY recognize the drive just fine. AND USB storage devices that I had ALREADY used on this system still work. It's only new ones that have this problem.

Dell support was completely useless. They first suggested reinstalling Windows... no thanks. Then they wanted to swap motherboards - not a hardware problem. So I appeal to the wizards here. Then *get this* they called me to say they would help me but since it is "advanced system troubleshooting" there is a fee - even though I am under warranty. To hell with them!

I did try deleting INFCACHE... no effect. Also played around with UpperFilters reg keys... no effect.

Help!

SS

Answer:HELP! Win7 will not allow me to attach USB storage devices

It sounds like you already got to decent answers. You could try getting drivers from the maker of the hard drive to try to fix your problem, since drivers aren't being installed automatically. If it shows up in VMs then it might be something that requires a repair install.
Repair Install

I don't see why you shouldn't go ahead and get the new mobo, provided its actually new. Motherboard, like all hardware, can develop problems over time. So, if its a new motherboard, not a refurb, I'd get it just to get a free $200 piece of hardware.

Hi Guys, i have a quick question regarding USB storage devices.
i'm running Windows XP Sp2

when i plug in my flash drive, iPod or card reader (with a sony memory stick in it) to my usb ports , Windows detects them and the "safely remove hardware" icon shows up in the bottom right toolbar. however, i cant access my USB devices from My Computer, the drives don't show up.

i read on some other post that you have to manually go into Control Panel->Administriative Tools ->Computer Management, to assign a specific drive to the device. However, after i tried that, the devices still dont show up in My Computer.

I'm not sure how to fix this, any help is welcome!
all my other USB devices (such as my keyboard and mouse and printer) work fine

Answer:Windows not recognizing my USB Storage devices

This may seem obvious and i don't mean to be patronizing but have you tried a different USB port? I have never heard of this problem. Also when you plug in your Ipod does it appear on iTunes? Also does it not prompt you when you plug in your devices open, run, view pictures etc.? Have you disabled that, if so enable it.
Regards

I've recently purchased a new PC running Windows 7 Home Premium. Everything is running like a dream except I have five devices with removable storage showing in My Computer. All I have attached is a WD External Hard Drive which I have assigned to E: changing my CD drive to K:

Is there any particular reason why these 5 additional unknown devices have appeared and can they be safely removed?

Many thanks in advance

I am using Windows XP home.

When I plug mass storage devices into my USB ports, the icon to 'safely remove device' shows up but I cannot see the device in My Computer. I have tried this with a flash drive, ipod, and a Sandisk transfer device. They are shown in device manager and it says they are working properly. They are not shown in computer management though.

My USB ports work OK with my mouse and printer, just not with mass storage devices.

Thanks for the help.

Answer:Mass Storage devices do not appear in My Computer?

Have you tried 'refreshing' the My Computer screen? Also, sometimes restarting the computer with it still plugged in can help (can also lead the computer to say the OS is missing... If the latter, just pull it out and restart.) or you could go to Start - Run - type 'diskmgmt.msc' and then find the disk on either of the lists and right-click and choose Explore.

I've seen some other threads with problems similar to mine, but with some distinguishable differences. I greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer on my problem:

First some basic info on my system:
- Windows Vista 32 bit, have latest service pack
- Toshiba Satellite

When I plug in any USB mass storage device (i.e. thumb drives, my JVC digital camcorder), my computer recognizes that they are there, but I cannot open them. To be more specific:

I plug in my JVC, I hear the notification, and my file copying software for the camera launches. However, when I try to access the drives (it takes two, (F & (G, it cannot access them. Furthermore, when I click on the backup option it says that no device is plugged in.

When I plug in my thumb drive, I hear the notification, but then the autolaunch doesn't happen. I then go to my computer and click on the drive (E, and windows says that the drive has to be formatted before it can be used... never had that happen before. Any how, I finally tried formatting one of my thumb drives and it couldn't successfully format it either.

I have no idea why this is happening, but I do know when it started...

I have a Sandisk Cruizer. It has always run fine on my computer, but I had it set-up to run as a storage device only (i.e. without the programs option). However, one day I decided to try and pull some files from another computer which it had never been used on. So I plug it in and it ends up install... Read more

Answer:Mass Storage Devices Not Reading

I'm pretty sure it's a driver-related issue, but I can't tell you exactly which one since I don't know. All I can tell you is that after doing various driver updates on two different PCs (one notebook with Windows Vista 32-bit and one desktop running Windows 7 64-bit) I had the EXACT same issue happen.

When I rolled the drivers back everything worked again.

I'm reasonably certain your issue is due to a driver conflict.

Answer:All USB storage devices CRASH windows

Can you insert a USB device without Windows crashing? Or is it durring boot/restart? I was getting a BSOD on bootup from a flash drive. I was able to insert the drive once Windows was up and running, then in device manager I expanded 'Portable Devices' and disabled the flash drive there.

This didnt disable the storage but the portable drivers Windows loads because it thinks my flash drive is a poratable/music device type.

Depending on your storage devices you may need a driver update. I was also getting errors (not crashes) and had to update the Intel Storage Manager. Some info on your system might help us to better determine the problem and solution.

An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)" How can I get this to work? I know it is not a hardware problem, as I am dual booting with XP and it works fine in XP. Up until recently, it was a simple, straightforward procedure to
transfer files to and from a memory stick or digital camera via any USB
port on my desktop. The stick or camera appear in Windows Explorer under Control Panel/Portable Media Device. Since installing SP2, however, when I attempt to access their files, nothing shows up, and when I attempt to move or copy files to them, a STOP symbol is displayed. Other USB devices work normally, and both the memory stick and camera work normally on my laptop and appear as removable disks, as they did on my previous desktop.

Following advice so far: fully updated system (including drivers), virus and spyware checked, disabled suspicious-looking services--which has not resulted in any other problem. What next?

Hello,

I have a notebook which can't recognize any usb mass storage devices, like flash memories or usb hdd, but usb mice and keyboard, usb bluetooth radio works well. I have tried almost everything I found on internet about this problem:

- There isn't any upper nor lower filter
- Tried this post Unable to install any USB devices
- Tried updating chipset driver
- Tried running microsoft hardware fix it

But the problem isn't solved.
If you could point me to any other solution than doing a repair install or similar solution I will be very gratefully.

The system is Windows 7 Professional x86.

Thanks

Hi Guys,

I've tried every available answer I could find on the internet but to no avail.

So, I have a WIN XP SP3 computer, that detects all USB devices, but only in BIOS. When I get to Windows, the devices can not be found anywhere. It's been working fine, but I don't know, when it stopped working (it's my server, and I do backups through USB external disk), since I haven't used it for external disks for more than a year. All other devices (mouses, keyboards, card readers) work fine. External disks and USB sticks work fine in all other computers (+ as said, they're all detected in BIOS).

What I tried and figured out so far is:

- USBSTOR.sys can't be started, I get an "Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."
- Changed USBSTOR.sys with new file
- Deleted upper and lower filters in registry
- Reset the registry values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Usb (it's 3,hexadecimal)
- Run a virus and malware scan
- Updated Windows (been up to date)
- Run the dll Suite
- Run a program, that cleans all letters assigned to external devices (and as it showed up all local as well, had to remap and reshare my RAID)

I'm loosing my mind slowly...

HiI have posted a link within this forum for some generic USB Mass Storage Device Drivers for Windows 98. I had endless trouble trying to get pen drives etc to work in Windows 98. Basically, pen drives use the USB Mass Storage Device Drivers, these are built in to Windows Me, 2000 and XP, but not in Windows 98/98SE. Microsoft do not even provide a generic driver, so it is down to individual manufacturers of pen drives etc to decide whether to bother providing drivers for Win 98.Eventually, I came across a solution. You can get a generic Win 98 USB Mass Storage device driver from here:click hereThis should work for any device that is classed as a USB Mass Storage Device, ie. Pen Drives, USB drives and even many digital cameras.I thought it would be good if people who have tried this driver can post what device they tried it with and whether or not it works. I am also interested to know if it works with the Sony Play Station Potable (PSP) or not, as there are no drivers for Win98 with this.I hope this is of use to people, and we can get a list of compatible devices going, then that will be of great help to others.
