Question: No Sound From Speaker & Headphone Jack On my Dell Inspiron 14z 5423 After Chnaging BAttery and Hard Disk

My dell inspiron 14z 5423 no longer have sound from both the speakers and the earphone jack.
This happened after I replaced the Battery and also the hard disk from 500gb to 1TB and upgraded to windows 10.
Before this, I was using Windows 8.1 and everything was working well. I have returned it back to windows 8.1 but the no audio problem still persist.
Also, my speaker symbol on the task bar shows a "cross" sign with "no audio output installed" displaying when I hover on the speaker icon.
Please I need help. have tried all options i can think of including driver updates.
One more thing, the sound driver are not showing up on the device manager window where other drivers are displayed.

Hello. Download this Win8.1 IDT audio driver for the Inspiron 14z 5423. There are two versions there -- get the one that says "File Format Hard Drive". Follow the installation instructions and see if the driver shows up in Device Manager.
If it doesn't, perform the PSA or ePSA sound test. If no sound during the test then there has been hardware failure. Could have happened during parts replacement.

i just recently bought a small set of computer speakers for my dell inspiron 3847. i plugged it into the back of the tower via usb, and now when i plug in my headphones into the front headphone jack on the tower to listen to the audio for movies or music,no sound goes through the headphones. need help troubleshooting this.

In this case the system is working as per design. When the headphone's are plugged in the systems ask's you which is the device you chose for audio output. In this case check if the headphone's are selected as the primary device for audio output then this could be the situation.

Hi, I have several problems with my laptop. It began when it sometimes stuck on first logo. I did recovery but it didn't help. So I tried to flash new bios A13(I had A06) from windows. After restart I could see only black screen. After unsuccessfull trying of everything I disconnected CMOS battery to reset bios and since this act I get 5 beeps at startup even if I changed battery for new one. I finally boot to windows but: Bios stayed unchanged(A06) and my battery is now on 0%, it says charging but it doesn't charge. I did DELL diagnostic tests from boot menu with 100% success. In these tests battery show 1%. I tried to flash bios again(from DOS, v. A08) and the same result, black screen at first (for long time)and after boot BIOS stayed the same - A06. Thank you for any help or advice. Martin

I’d advise that you load defaults in the BIOS. Please follow the steps mentioned below to load the BIOS to defaults to check if then you are able to update the BIOS to A08 version on the system.

Reboot the computer.
When prompted during POST, press the <F2> key to enter the setup screen.
On the System Setup screen, press the <F9> key.
Press the <Enter> key on Yes to Load Optimized Defaults and restart the computer.

Also, Check if the AC adapter is detected under AC adapter type in BIOS.

One of the PC's i have to support only has Audio working through the head phone jack on the front of the case and not through the PC speaker when no headphone's are connected.  I have checked the PC speaker connection \ the PC speaker it's self and both are working.  Any suggestions. ? Thanks.

hi,i have a HP  Evo n610c laptop,   while i had the headphones plugged in i accidentally dropped the laptop..  To my utter total disappointment this left me with no sound in the headphones and in the internal speakers.. decided to take the laptop apart and found that the headphone jack has been ripped right of the main board...     like i say i have no sound through the normal internal speakers... does the laptop think it still has headphones pluged in?  Is there anyway i can disable it?,   its a shame to think that little headphone jack can destroy all the sound on my laptop.  Or do you think i can bypass the head phone socket with a new wire on the main board.. the only problem is it has quite a few solder  points where the socket originally snapped off..... Please help.

Hello guys. I bought new dell laptop yesterday and i already faced some problems with the headphone jack. Everything is working, but when i reboot my pc without unplugging the jack, i do not get any sound from my 2.1 system. I have to unplug the jack and then plug again in order to get the sound through the speakers. I tried to look for the solution but couldn't come up with anything helpful. Reinstallation of drivers does not help. Maybe someone could help me with this issue?

I bought a new Dell Inspiron 15R about two months ago now, and since I got it the sound has been messing up.

Whenever I use headphones, some sounds still come out of my speakers. It seems that if I'm listening to one piece of audio, for example a skype call, it's fine. However, if I start doing something else at the same time, for example watching a video, the audio from that video will play from my speakers instead of my headphones (looks as if some programs have priority to play out of headphones, and everything else will play from laptop speakers)

Please help, for the moment I've disabled my speakers so sounds are forced to play out of my headphones, however this disables the sounds for some programs (Minecraft, Spotify etc)

I'd love if somebody could shead some light on my problem

Welcome to the Community. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your audio drivers? To uninstall, click on start, right click on computer, click on properties, click on device manager, click on the symbol next to sound video and game controllers, right click on IDT High Definition Audio Code and click on uninstall, and confirm it, once it removed use the below link to install it. I have a Dell 5548 with a 1080p touch screen, Core i5 &12GB of Ram. After updating to windows 10 I have had a number of issues with this laptop.
1)The most annoying of all is that the speaker volume fluctuates from high to low at any given setting which is extremely frustrating. One time its loud then all of a sudden it reduces then a few seconds later its up again. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue as this didn't happen on windows 8.1?
2)The Headphone Jack is too tight. If I try too insert any earphones or headphones it will go in to a certain degree then i have to apply force but it still wont go in. If i try to apply more force it seems that it will break as there is a creaking sound. sound from the speakers isn't fine and i cant even use earphones :(
3) My laptop has a real sense camera and it just stops using its infrared sensors or depth sensors when setting up windows hello. It tells me to place my face in the centre of the screen and then no response even though i can see what the webcam is showing me. 
I hope you can answer my questions as it would be much appreciated.

The headphones jack on laptop just broke... i've tried twisting the plug a little bit and it worked for a couple of minutes but now it doesn't .

I want to know if there is a way I can to use the microphone jack as a headphone jack.

If it's not possible... there's another jack to the right of the headphones jack with the symbol resembling this: ((*-))

You need to buy/acquire a 3.5mm stereo screw plug.

There`s no point trying to mess with the mic plug.Even if you could
connect it,you`d only get mono.

The other socket you refer to,is most likely a Line IN.

I just got a brand new Inspiron 15 5000 directly from Dell and it doesn't detect headphones plugged into the 1/8" jack.
I've plugged two different pairs of headphones in and neither appears on the list if I go to control panel > hardware and sound > sound > manage audio devices > playback.
In both cases the audio on the internal speakers continues unchanged. 
I went to Device Manager > Sound, Video, and Gaming Controllers > Realtek Audio right clicked and selected "update driver" and I was told the driver was already working on the current update. 
One pair of headphones is a Sony mdr-7506 and the other was a pair of cheap earbuds. Both work fine with other audio devices

First, make sure the headset is fully inserted.  If it is, you should get a popup asking what you plugged in..  It sounds like you are not getting that for whatever reason.  Have you installed any third party audio apps?
Can you find an icon for the Maxx Audio UI, either in the hidden icons on the Task Bar or your listing of apps on the Start Menu.

I been having problems with my headphone jack since I got my new laptop. My laptop has been refusing to recognize my headphones. I plug them in, the sound keeps coming directly from the computer. I check the playback devices, headphones are not even on there. I've read quite a few posts and tried to fix this issue. The only thing that seemed to work was manually updating my drivers with device manager. However, if I shut my computer, or unplug my headphones and then put them back, the issue arises again. 
Obviously the issue is not my headphones, they work just fine for the period of time that the issue is fixed. I've update everything that I know to update. If anyone has any other suggestions then I will gladly try them.
I'm not sure if this is important or not, but I am using Windows 10.

Hello, Something is stuck inside my headphone jack (really no idea what, it looks like some amber colored resin) This caused no problems until i tried to stick my headphones in (because i didn't know there was something else inside)Now the little switch inside is activated and i can't use my normal speakers anymore. Pulling the thing out is not possible it really seems glued inside, i can remove small parts of it by scratching with a screwdriver but i see no way to remove it without a drill. I googled for ways to shut off the port so i can revert back to the normal speakers (i really don't care about losing the headphone jack, i normally only use speaker sound) It seems the installed realtek drivers allow no option to deactivate it. I tried reinstalling the realtek driver, changed registry option "EnableDynamicDevices" but didnt find the more promising "ForceDisableJD".  The Windows driver also didn't help and i didn't find any other drivers available for this notebook. The BIOS also didn't have any option for this (but maybe i'm just bad at finding it) Is there any way to disable the port on the software side or a way to disconnect the hardware? I have soldering equipment here. I really don't care for a clean solution anymore, just hoping for a way to get the sound. Thanks for your help. Edit: whoops almost forgot the essentials: this is a lenovo z510 with win7 64bit that was not pre-installed (bought without OS)

Hi all I recently got the i7 version of this laptop and noticed that the speakers rattle a bit when vocals are being played and the headphone jack makes everything sound like it has REVERB added to it...??? It sounds like I'm in a chamber. I updated everything, anything I can do or no?

My Dell Studio 540 has lost its output to attached speakers.  I cannot tell if the problem is caused by upgrade to Win 10 or if I have experienced a coincidental motherboard failure.  I have tried a number of fixes that include uininstalling drivers, roll back drivers, and even installing the original Vista drivers that I have from the original system disks.  Nothing works. 
I do notice, by looking at the sound panel, the HDMI output seems to be operating because I can see where it indicates sound when playing some music.  However, I cannot get speakers or headphone input to work.  Even though I try the speaker plugs in any of the inputs, the sound panel still shows unconnected speakers or headphones.  
So, how do I get the system to recognize that speakers have been plugged in?  Is there another driver that I can use.  To date I have tried a number of Realtek driver and configurations, to no avail

Apologies for missing your post. The Studio 540 was never validated for Windows 10.

My advice is to disable the integrated Realtek HD audio in the Bios- Advanced- Integrated Peripherals. Then install a current PCIe x1 sound card in one of the PCIe x1 slots on the motherboard. A current sound card will provide Windows 10 drivers.

Ok, i have a dual boot system with Vista Premium and XP. The following issue ONLY occurs in Vista. XP is fine.

Answer:No Sound after using Dell Dimension 8400 front headphone jack

It is a simple mechanical problem. When you plug in the headphone jack, a spring leaf is moved breaking the circuit to the speakers. When you remove the headphone jack, the spring leaf is supposed to move back to the normal closed position. The metal used to construct your headphone jack was made of a metal too soft to spring back into position. You will have to open the computer case and bend the contacts back to the correct position. If you are electronics savvy you can replace the jack -- or you should ask Dell to replace your computer under warranty.

When I listen to audio with headphones it comes out crackly and distorted, however, when I connect a speaker via aux cable in the same headphone jack it sounds normal. Audio from the laptop's speakers in normal as well. I have checked the headphones and it's not them that's the issue.  The crackling happens with all my headphones. 
The problem is very recent. A couple of days ago I picked up my headphones unaware they were plugged into my XPS. The jack was pulled out of the headphone jack when I picked up the headphones and it's been an issue ever since. I would have immediately assumed that It's a hardware thing with the jack although, I didn't pull it out very hard nor did it come out at a weird angle so I can't see how that could've of broken it. Also, the jack still works perfectly with external speakers so I'm not too sure what's wrong with it.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be an enormous help:)

Alright, so here's the problem. I just recently got this computer and plugged it into the VGA port and the sound wouldn't work. I plugged Logitech External Speakers into it and the computer didn't even acknowledge that it was there. I plugged in Headphones to see if those worked and they didn't aswell. I asked the guy who I got the computer from and he said that it (sound) would work when plugged in using HDMI. So I did that and the sound does work, but only through the TV speakers. It still doesn't acknowledge the speakers or the headphone s when plugged in. So I wen t and grabbed some other speakers I had and tried those and It still didn't recognize the speaker. My question is: How Do I Get My Computer To Recognize My Speakers? Any help would be much appreiciated.

I had to have the hard drive replaced in my computer due to a defect in the drive. Ever since the hard drive was replaced, the head phone plug-in that is on the face of the tower does not work, but the speaker plug-in that is located in the back of the tower, works just fine.

I cannot figure out what is wrong. The audio driver installed for my system was obtained from the Dell website along with the majority of my other drivers.
Any help would be great.

Just bought this model a month ago. At first, I thought there isn't any LED Indicator in this model for charging/ HDD activity modulation but later when I saw the guide, I noticed an indicator just below the touchpad. But, the catch is that it isn't glowing at all. Even while charging, I tried the hotkey combination (Fn + H) to toggle that light but to no avail. Any idea as to how to activate this light?

I have a 2.1 speaker set attached to my laptop that does not have its own headphone jack. So in order to listen to headphones I have to unplug the 2.1 from the headphone jack and plug in the headphones. I tried a cheap splitter but that didn't sound good.

What I would like is something that had two jacks that allowed me to keep the 2.1 plugged in all the time in one jack and when I want to use the headphones I could just plug them into the other jack. I would like both jacks whether used together or solo to have the same sound quality as a single jack... with no degradation in sound.

Lastly, I would like to be able to mute the 2.1 (using volume control on the speaker set) and still get great controllable sound out of the jack that have the headphones plugged in.

my Dell Inspiron 14z is stuck on the Dell Logo at boot up.
it was working well yesterday, but just become freeze at boot up
I can't press F2 F8 or F12 because it freezes at this point.
Releasing the residual charge did nothing (I drained the battery, have no courage to remove battery as the procedure is kind of complicated) - same problem
Restarting and tapping F12 highlights 'Boot options' but at this point it freezes.
Restarting with Fn pressed had no effect - same problem.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Every time I'm tuocuing the lid on the top or bottem right side the pc restart itself.
The easiest touch restart the computer, at first I toght it's the screen(LCD) so disassemble it and connected a HDMI cable to my TV. I even replaced my motherboard.

Recently I bought a new LCD screen for my Inspiron 14z 5423 that I bought back in 2012. Recently the screen broke and I went to the PartsPeople website. I got a new screen with ease. Then I saw that my laptop was sold with a Core i5 motherboard with AMD Radeon discrete graphics. My laptop has the Core i5 integrated graphics motherboard. The website said that the motherboard is compatible with my laptop. I purchased the motherboard along with the screen. A few questions I have is if it actually will work with my system. I have been searching for the fan needed for the new motherboard, but are there other things I will need.  My laptop has been updated to Windows 10.
If possible, can someone tell me if this is actually compatiable and if it will work, or if there are things I will need to do. Any information would be great.

You'll need a new heatsink assembly (the one from Intel GPU won't fit the board with AMD).
You may also need a larger-capacity power adapter -- the system with AMD graphics will draw significantly more power than the one with Intel graphics.

it came with mSATA 32 Gb as Cash and 500 Gb ssd western digital 
i am planing to increase the ssd hard capacity to samsung evo ssd 4 Tb and clean install windows 10 from usb  
1- is there a compatibility issue with the BIOS? 
2- do i need to do anything with the mSATA chip?
3-do i need to increase its capacity ?
4-if i will increase the capacity of the mSATA chip to 500 Gb , which is better , to install windows on it or to install it on the new SSD hard drive ?

Assuming your're planning on replacing the 2.5" drive with a 2.5" SSD (there are no mSATA drives at 4T -- M.2 yes, but mSATA, no), best is to get rid of the cache drive (or use it as a small storage drive).  While it accelerates the hard drive, it will slow down the native SSD.

Hello I've bought my Lenovo laptop about half a year ago. From the very beginning the headphone audio jack had some problems, there would be no sound when headphones are plugged in, however restarting the laptop usually helped. I have not had this problem for a few months until now. When I plug in headphones, no sound comes out and restarting the computer does not help. Furthermore, the sound of the laptop speakers seems to be a big different than it normally used to be - the sound is a bit lower and so to say ''dimmer''. Please let me know I could fix it.

Hello, I currently have a dell new inspiron 14z, with 512gb hdd and a 60gb of cache-ssd (if that's the right term)I'm planning to buy a Samsung 256gb ssd and install it in place of the hdd - and since the Windows is installed in the HDD, this means that I'll have to reinstall Windows again.
So since I'm a newbie to all the ssd thing, I have a few number of questions -
1) Would I need to change BIOS settings? It's currently set at Intel RST setting (I don't remember the right term, but it wasn't AHCI), and it uses rapid storage technology using the micro ssd. Would I need to disable it to reinstall Windows?
2) Since I don't have a recovery disk, is it ok if I just download Windows from  and install it in the USB?

Hi Andrew Pai,
mSATA drive uses the SSD technology to make the system faster. If you replace the normal mechanical hard drive with SSD hard drive the IRST technology feature would be nullified.
However, to use the SSD on the system please change the SATA operation mode in the BIOS from IRST to AHCI. You will need an operating system reinstallation disc to install it on the system. You can use the link below for placing a request for operating system reinstallation disc (USA only).

I replaced the battery in my Inspiron 14Z-5423 ( I did this once before with no problems).  This time, the laptop booted up and everything looked ok but the only 7 keys working on the keyboard .  I thought it was a bad keyboard, so I replaced that and now the same keys only work on the new keyboard.  I checked all the cables that I unhooked to get the battery out and all appear ok. An external usb keyboard works fine.

I have a 3520 that was upgraded to Windows 10.  It was giving just 3 beeps on post and nothing else.  I replaced the system board as per Dell, and now it boots up but the right speaker is silent.  The left one works fine though.  I tried headphones and they work normally with sound out of both sides.  I replaced the speakers but it did no good, same issue.  I checked all the audio settings and they are correct.  Any ideas?

there is no headphone option on my ideapad 310 , only speakers option. i tried uninstalling the sound drivers and the re-installing them  but it proved to be  useless. now audio is being being played through headphones although my laptop has no headphone option on the "playback" tab ,,however after a while the headphone disconnects and then the sound comes out from the speakers again. Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.
You can also start by flushing out all static, remove battery and AC adaptor and hold down power button for about 15 seconds.
Check the Playback Devices under Sound Properties (by going to Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices and see if the Headphone is being set as the default playback device. If not, click on it and set it as the default playback device, try to play a sample sound and observe.

On my C50 the sound is fine through the laptop speakers but when I plug in a jack to the headphone socket the sound only comes out through the right speaker. When you do a test of the IDTspeaker, you can hear both left and right sounds but both come from the right speaker (like its in mono). There is no headphone device appearing in the sound playback devices - looking at some fora it looks like there should be. I have reinstalled the idt driver from Toshiba site (2014). I have also used windows to get the latest sound driver but none of this helps. it did work before and seems to have gone wrong after a windows 8 update. Can anyone help please?

I've recently been having a problem with my headphones. The computer recognizes that I've plugged them in but it still uses the external speakers and there's no sound coming through the headphones. I've tried more than one pair of headphones and it still doesn't work. Restarting the computer worked once but not anymore.

There is usually a hardware switch in the socket, which is engaged when you put the plug in. Seems like it might be mechanically broken.

Hi,  I just made some driver update and windows ( windows anniversary ) update and after installing i do not have any sound with the built in spaker or with my headphone plugged with a jack anymore. But with a usb headphone it works! When i go to the Windows playback devices window there is no device present. I already update the Audio drivers and restart run the audio troubleshooting tool in Windows but nothing new it doesn't work. Gauthier

does it do anything becasue i plugged in my headphones but I dont hear any sound coming out from it.. these is the one on the cd drive and their is also a volume adjuster next to it... but its not working. thanks _ John

its analogue sound for cd's. its normally not used. in fact i think its been sort of obsolete since windows 98. there is an option somewhere in media player to disable digital sound for cd's or something along those lines which will probably allow you to use headphones on the front jack

I'm guessing that it's probably just a compatibility issue... or just how it is, but I'm curious:

I updated my laptop from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro a while back. It started out as just a minor inconvenience, but it's getting to be very annoying. When I plug in my external speakers (via the headphone jack) or my headphones, Windows doesn't automatically switch the sound output to the headphone jack. I have to manually switch it ("Manage Audio Devices"). The same is true for the reverse, when I unplug my headphones.

Is there any way around this, or is it likely an issue with the compatibility of my sound card?

Do you have the correct Windows 7 drivers for your Audio system? The XP drivers are not compatible and you need at a minimum Vista drivers as Vista and Windows 7 handle sound functions differently than XP.

On most newer "HD Audio" systems the jack is "auto sensing" and switches "logically". On many older PC systems that is a mechanical function with the jack.

I just purchased a new notebook, and I have a bit of a problem. When I plug headphones into the side headphone jack, the sound quality is downright terrible. Very shortly I noticed that it didn't sound as good/decent as my older notebook.
The speakers seem to sound fine, well you know - as good as laptops can sound. 
Right now I have two notebooks side by side: 
a friends Samsung Series 3 (NP300E5C), with Windows 8 (upgraded from W7) / Microsoft High Definition audio
my Toshiba L50 Windows 8 / Realteck High Definition
I dont have my older notebook anymore, but I do remember it sounding better. Comparing this Toshiba to the Samsung (both sitting on the desk side-by-side), the Toshiba sounds a little better through the speakers, but there is no comparison with the headphone - The Samsung is pretty decent while the Toshiba makes me cry. 
Now granted, I'm not expecting a symphony, but if I cant solve this I'm going to have to sell the Toshiba.
I've tried uninstalling Realtek, but I couldn't get the sound to work.
Re-installing Realtek solved nothing
One thing I noticed, there is no 'headphone' icon in the device manager (Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Sound / or simply right click the audio icon in the taskbar). Are the headphones not high definition or something?

Whenever I plug in my headphones into the jack, I no longer get a notification telling me my headphones are plugged in and Audio comes out of both the Headphones and the laptop speakers. This happend recently and didn't happen before. I have tried multiple headphones, all to the same effect. I am thinking this is a hardware issue. Does anybody have any solutions to fix?

1.  Go to the Control Panel by right click the bottom left corner in "Desktop" mode.
2.  Search for "Realtek HD Audio Manager".
3.  Set the headphone as communication device (see image below).

I recently bought a new Dell U2515H Monitor which is capable of 2450x1440 resolution.
I connected it to my Dell Inspiron 14z 5423 laptop using HDMI (there's no DP on the laptop).
The 5423 comes with two display adapters: an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 and dedicated AMD Radeon HD 7570M, which supports 2450x1440 resolution.
However, Windows only allows me set the external monitor's display up to 2048x1152 resolution.
Does this mean it uses the integrated card for the display?
Is there any way to fix this?
(All my drivers are updated to the latest versions)

This is going to be quite a long description. Flashback to about a year ago. My son and I were trying to hook up his computer to a dell external monitor. It only provides hdmi output, but we had a USB to the phone line thing. We thought we could hook it up by connecting the computer to the monitor with the phone line port in the computer to the USB port on the monitor. MAJOR MISTAKE. The whole computer when black. The screen wasn't lit, but the power indicator was on. Nothing else. We ended up fixing it, but don't know how anymore. Before we did this, on startup, we saw the black screen with Dell Inspiron on it. Afterwards, all i see is lines on the screen.
Now fast forward to now. Recently (last 8 months) when I turn on the computer, I get the lines on the screen and I hear this beeping. (Accidently happened in a library. Librarian thought I had a bomb or something) I was able to fix it by connecting the computer into a external screen by the hdmi. The screen would then light up.
Then a couple hours ago, all *** broke loose. I went into my room, hit the power button and got a response of the same lines on the screen, but a beeping. But then I noticed several more but different now green colored lines on the left side of my screen. I took it to my tv thinking that would fix it and got the computer screen up on the t.v. I have a pair of Logitech speakers with subwoofer and would like to connect them to my computer for surround sound using the computer's speakers as the front pair.  Using headphones I cannot find a way to make the computer speakers and the headphone play at the same time.  Please advise:Can I connect the logitech speakers as above? andif so, what software settings do I have to make?

Please help. I just got a new SONY Vaio Fs laptop and already the headphone jack is malfunctioning. I can only hear out of one speaker or headphone usually, and on some days neither will emitt any sound whatsoever. Whats my problem and how can i fix this???

Hello there, I am not sure if my speaker/headphone jack (hardware input) device isn't working (albeit my default laptop built in speakers work), because of viruses and the overall system performance being affected by viruses, but hear me out... I have Lenovo 3000 Y410 laptop having Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. Realtek HD Audio latest driver is installed. But from the last 3 days, when I connect headphone through laptop, following things happen : -
1) Headphone connected popup doesn't show up.
2) Mic of Headphone connected pop shows up.

3) When I play video, sound coming from both headphone & laptop speakers.
4) When I mute sound by muting sound icon in taskbar, sound then comes only from headphone.

What I have tried?
1) Installed new Realtek HD Audio Manager.
2) Installed OS again.
3) Tried to change settings in Realtek Hd Audio Manager. But Nothing changes.

When I input headphone & mic jacks into laptop, & then check Realtek HD Audio Manager. The following image shows this : -

The green in realtek hd audio manager is for headphone & red is for mic. In the image, it is shown that headphone not connected & mic connected. But even headphone not connected shows up, sound coming form headphone.

I want to get sound from only headphone when headphone is connected. Is this a hardware problem ?

My Realtek HD Audio Manager has more options than yours.

Also, I notice you only have the microphone in the Recording Section of the Sound Panel. RIGHT click in an empty space in that Panel and then LEFT click Show Disabled and Disconnected devices. The Stereo Mix should be shown and you can enable that and make it the default Recording device.

Where did you get the RealTek driver that you installed? If you are not using the Lenovo supplied sound driver, get that and install it as a first step. I have a Lenovo Laptop and it has Stereo Mix and other functions. I haven't looked at the RealTek HD manager so I'm not sure what all it shows.

I can't get the graphics to switch to use the AMD dedicated card when 3D applications are being run. This has been confirmed by disabling the AMD card in device manager and seeing no difference from when it's enabled. It's also been confirmed by using utilities like HWMonitor that show no activity on the AMD card when running demanding 3D apps. Both cards exist in device manager

What I've tried

Installed the latest drivers from ATI, switchable graphics options are there but they don't switch
Removed both drivers in safe mode and allowed Windows to install the default ones. Using this method shows not switchable graphics options and it never worked.
Removed both drivers and installed the ATI driver from the Dell driver page (There's not one for Intel HD 4000). Switchable graphics option is there, but does not switch.
I've checked that Catalyst is setup correctly with the correct performance and power plans, to no avail. I've even tried the options to force high performance and they don't work.
I've tried solutions for my laptop and related hardware, to no avail:

Dell Inspiron 14z (5423) 
Intel HD 4000
AMD Radeon HD 7570M
Windows 10 Home 64-Bit
Help please.

  I have updated my laptop to (inspiron 14Z 5423) to windows 10 on july 29 . After upgrading , wifi options and wifi settings didn't show up in the settings menu. I tried to run dell diagnostic tools but  all the results are shown as  "passed" (how could it happen??..) and i thought it might be due to driver issues and tried to re-install the wifi drivers . to my surprise , i couldn't  find any drivers in the dell site and  after performing "detect service tag for driver update." says drivers are upto date.
  So .. after complete disappointment .. i rolled back my OS to windows 8.1 and everything worked fine . Again on august 1st...a menu popped  up on my laptop saying ...your laptop  is good to upgrade as  DELL team tested and no sign of any issues..bla bla. I thought may be this time the upgrade may work and updated my OS..and again disappointed to notice that wifi failed to detect in windows 10.So .left  with no option..i tried  "Reset" option in windows 10 for clean install .

  This time wifi worked and i am happy and  "sound" failed to detect. Again ran all those dell diagnostics...all the results show "passed" . Tried to download dell sound drivers.. from dell site but i could not see anything in the site

I think i have a possible solution by replacing cmos battery. since i don't have warranty and majority of the tech people  bluntly say it is motherboard or chipset failure. please open the youtube link and find a "James C" comment which says he fixed the 3 beeps  by changing a cmos battery
I suggest this solution ..only if you dont have warranty and moreover i was thinking to change cmos battery after purchasing it

I purchased new earphone with mic & connected to my laptop, V570. But no sound is coming. Then i checked the earphone to mobile to check the output. It is working. But connecting with laptop is not working . Also a USB port next to it is also not functioning.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
On your computer the audio jacks along with the USB port are mounted on a card that is separate from the motherboard.  The two are then connected with a ribbon cable.  If your headphone jack is inoperable with more than one pair of headphones and the USB port does not work would be a good indication of a problem with the card.   
Just to rule out a possible hardware conflict try doing a BIOS reset.  Just do this.......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.
If the reset did not correct the problem then I would suspect either the audio card is faulty or the ribbon cable has become disconnected.  In that case I would suggest you contact Lenovo Support for additional service especially if your warranty is still active.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....

HI I am facing audio problem for the last few months. when i install window 7 its automatically install audio driver which plays built in laptop speaker but exteranl headphone/microphone do not play sound. Same like this if i install given audio driver of hp probook 6550b which is sp48147 then headphone play sound but spearkers do not. I have installed windows many times to solve this issue but still this problem is existing. Please help in resolving this issue

From the DELL technical support website, I downloaded the BIOS Update. On executing the file it asked me system will reboot.  
The system has frozen and I cannot restart my machine. I am using Windows 7 (64bit)
Please help to restart/restore old BIOS settings!

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Try powering up again.
If that doesn't get it going, either the mainboard needs to be replaced, or you need to have a shop un-solder the BIOS chip, flash it externally and then resolder it.

Hey, everyone! I am having a problem with my audio jack:1. First of all my laptop doesn't seem to acknowledge when I put my headphones/external speakers in the jack... no notification or reaction from the Laptop.2. Second- only left headphone is working. Other than that the laptop speakers are good, the only problem is with the jack.What I've done is to reset my PC, to return it to it's factory settings... but no change! Still the same problem!Laptop is new.. less than 3 months..  I am desperate... I really hope there's something I can do and you could help me with that! hi my laptop 14z 5423 is not taking charge even after i insert the charge and the charger is ok check in press F2 and its show the charge is ok .

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Reconnect the battery an plug the adapter in -- you should get a solid LED on the adapter (or DC cord).
If you don't, replace the adapter first. If you do, go into Setup (F2 at powerup) and verify the AC adapter is recognized.  If it's not, the battery won't charge.  If it isn't recognized, in order:  try a new Dell AC adapter.  If that fails, replace the DC power jack, and if that doesn't solve it, replace the mainboard. If the adapter IS recognized but the battery still will not charge, replace the battery.

My laptop inspiron 14z couldn't start and got 3 beeps and black screen, I had windows 10 installed and Bios A13.
The BIOS update A13 seems to be the problem. With a downgrade to A12 I fixed it. And you need to do that in ms-dos mode cause the bios executable doesn't let you do a downgrade on windows) I first thought that the problem was windows 10 but the computer had the same problem once I installed windows 8.1.
The difficult part was to start the computer again, I followed a youtube tutorial (portugues) to disassemble the laptop and it started, so you can flash the bios. Go youtube and search for inspiron 14z 3 beeps. (notice that in my case the laptop started some times at the 3rd time I pressed the power button, some times I needed more that 20 attempts but finally it booted. You don't need to press any F keys convination or whatever people says, it will eventually start and I don't have explanation for that)
Once in windows make a bootable MS-DOS USB using for example Rufus app. (MSDOS, not FreeDos, I couldn't flash the bios with freedos option) and put the bios in it. BMWZ4A12.exe, can be downloaded from dell website.
Then boot UEFI setup restarting de laptop and press F2 at dell's logo. Maybe you can't access the UEFI when you restart, if you can't, you can access the UEFI using the Recovery setup in windows (search recovery, click recovery setup, go advanced options, troubleshooting, change UEFI settings, restart) go to BOOT section an... My Dell 14z 5423 will no longer boot. The keyboard lights turn on but then nothing happens. The screen is blank. If I remove the ram the computer gives out 2 beeps. If the ram is inside nothing happens just a blank screen. 
If someone knows how to fix this please let me know.

About two days ago, I purchased a new laptop (a Dell Inspiron 3537), I love it so far except there is one major problem, there is only one headphone jack? How am I suppose to insert my microphone plug?
- Anyways that isn't even the major problem, that's just a side problem, here's the big problem; When I insert my headphone plug into the jack I receive no sound what so ever through the headphones and the sound continues to play through the speakers. I've tried four working pairs of headphones all receive the same problem.
Please help, I want to be able to use my headset for gaming/talking/videos/movies ect.

Problem is not either of hardware and software, this is only of settings, with all single jack laptop this persist. Please Open Sound in Control Panel and Change Setting in Playback Tab, Try Disabling and enabling headphone and Speakers.

My 5758 inspiron documentation shows where the audio I/O jack is and simply labels it as 2.5mm headset jack.  I can't locate any more information on it.  

What is the correct plug type that fits the jack (3 or 4 contact) and what are the signals?

Just for discussion, to see who else has these issues.
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series. The headphone jack on my laptop is loose, meaning that my heavy cable unplugs my headphones. I've solved this issue by taping my headphones in, but obviously a bit inconvenient.
The other issue is the noise. It's a bit distorted (and no, it's not my headphones), and some "static" sounds can be heard, as if there is a poor connection.
Short of soldering in an extension (which might void my warranty), there isn't a solution for either of these issues.
Really, I'm just curious if I'm the only one. I'd like to hear of some other issues that might be unresolvable.

I buy the New 15" Inspiron 7567 with i7 7700HQ+GTX1050Ti+4K UHD IPS Screen
This system came with Headphone/Mic Combo Port.

But my laptop have some problem like this
1. Sometime when plug-in headphone to this laptop, it's cannot detect my headphone when i played music the sound still playing from internal speaker. This problem happen randomly and if i plug-in before turn on the laptop the headphone will working properly.

2. My laptop always using built-in Microphone even i plug-in the headphone (That came with Mic) I trying to use a lot of head phone like Apple Earpod , Samsung Galaxy S7 Headphone , Steelseries Syberia V2 , and Tt isurus pro all of these headphone got the same result, CANNOT using the Mic my laptop only use the Built-in Mic.

I update my driver using the lastest file from DELL support website that searching by my SERVICE TAG.
Have any idea for this problem? This is only 3 day old laptop.

Hello. To test the headphone jack switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names in steps 1 and 6.]
If there is still only buzzing even with the native driver, test using other headphones. If still no luck then probably hardware failure. Contact tech support for repair if under warranty.
If it works okay with the native driver then the Realtek driver is buggy. Try a different version of the driver. If you need help with that reply back with the full model name (something like "Inspiron 11 3147", etc) and which operating system it has.

My headphone jack seems to be not working. The output sound is always too thin. I have tried both mono and stereo headsets and they all seem to be yielding the same result but always seem to work properly when connected to a different audio device. I have done a windows update and also have the dell update tool but nothing seems to be helping. Please help.

We just purchased.  We play audio but when plug in headphones playback still comes over the speakers.  After trying different headphones - we still get same result.  Does anyone have a solution?

I recently discovered a difference in the volume; the left speaker of the laptop has been functioning normally while there seems to be very low to no sound coming from the right speaker.

Any suggestions?

Hello.You didn't mention the headphone jack, so if you have not yet done so, plug in headphones and see if the balance is okay in them. If the headphones check out okay, then most probably it's a problem related to the speakers.
The test for speakers is the ePSA audio test. It is a hardware test, which means that if the test  tones are very low in the right speaker, but normal in the left speaker, then there is hardware failure somewhere, related to the right speaker.
If both speakers sound normal during the test, then the problem is in the software. Do the usual things like re-install the audio driver, check the balance levels in the Sound properties, try different audio sources, etc.
Re-installing the audio driver resets the settings to their default configurations, so if you do it then you don't have to bother with things like volumes and balance settings, because they will be okay.(Also if the balance is okay through headphones, then it should be okay through the speakers too.)

I have an issue where there is a hissing sound coming from the speakers when I plug them into my laptop headphone jack. But this does not happen when I unplug the power to the laptop and let it run on batteries. It also does not hiss with the speakers built into the laptop. Do you have any ideas? The hissing sound lessens if I plug the adapter into another outlet, but does the same with 2 different chargers. Any ideas?

Hi I have the envy m6 1105dx with windows 10 64 bit installed no major changes in the way I use my laptop recently, except there was some spam pages that kept popping out of nowhere today all of the sudden all sound stopped coming from the headphone jack for no reason.I already tried1) disabling and enabling drivers2) restarting OS3)uninstalling all the drivers and re installing them 4) rolling back drivers its worth mentioning that when I plug in the headphones its not and cannot be set to the default device in the playback devices, its set to communicating device, it also says that degital audio (HDMI) is not plugged in I have tried multiple headphones with no luck  I can use the mic on my headphones with no problems  please help thank you

I have a Fugitsu Lifebook Series A laptop. It has always performed well in the past. I bought some higher quality Monster headphones and now no sound will come out of the headphones. It says that the phones are not plugged in when they are. I have run the troubleshooter in the control panel with no success.
Any suggestions?

title says it, i downloaded the most recent version of the realteck drivers from toshibas site and i have no sound when plugging in headphones.

Did the headphone jack ever work? Is the headset you are using a known good headset?

If the unit is still under warranty, best to contact Toshiba. If its a hardware problem (and under warranty) only Toshiba can get it corrected.

Hi all,

I can't get sounds to come out of various headsets connected to the front headphone jack. USB speakers are working.

Sound > Playback ... no headphones appearing even after showing disconnected/disabled devices. Doesn't work under the HDA default device either.

Just done a fresh install of everything and upgraded the folks computer to windows 7 SP1 from XP SP3 in hope of a fix. They used to work, but stopped working at some point while I was away... (back headphone jack too, so we purchased USB speakers.)

There's a lot of thread on google with this problem but none of 'em have worked for me. Which driver should I download?

Hi All: i have thus far been unable to confirm if the headphones jack on the right side is a headphones ONLY jack or a combo microphone/headphones jack.   It would make no sense to put in a headphones ONLY jack, but stranger things have happened in this world. I've seen conflicting reports.    May I ask for a definitive confirmation please? Thanks in advance.

I have windows xp and no sound is coming from the right headphone or right speaker, I've checked volume setting sounds and audio says everything is working no mute except on microphone but nothing is fixing the problem.

So here's my story:

I decided to see if I could listen to music directly from my sound card instead of my speakers. I unplugged the speakers, plugged in my headphones. No go. So I plugged my speakers back in and then I couldn't hear any sounds from it. So I restarted my computer. This half-fixed the problem.

Now I only have sound from my left headphone/speaker. I have checked all the balances and they are normal. I do not blast my music.

I would be very thankful if someone could help me with this problem. Thanks.

switching the speakers to the headphones could have caused a mismatch with the sound card circuitry since the resistance or impedance of the devices is greatly different and could have possibly made one or both sides not work. I would suggest turning-off the computer for a few hours and then plug the speakers back in and reboot it might be that just letting the circuitry cool off will fix it. If it still does the same thing I would have somebody look at it who is qualified to fix this type of circuitry.

I am running Windows 7 x64 on an Asus U56E machine. The audio works fine on my Linux partition through both the speakers and headphone jack. The headphone jack therefore works.
But I cannot get sound using working headphones while listening through the headphone jack in Windows 7.
How to fix this?

Researching that model (you failed to fully fill out the "My System Specs") you have RealTek audio.

Can you post a screen shot of the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound, Sound Panel Playback and the Device Manager Sound sections.

here is my problem
after doing a format , i installed all the drivers but now the sound , when i use headphones is not right . It seems i am only getting one side of the audio .eg music but no vocals , or vocals and no music . if i only put the headphone jack almost all of the way in then i get the full sound .

I am a sound engineer in the live music industry and my understanding of this is because it is being sent as a digital signal and not as an anolog signal as required by the headphone jack . I may be 100% wrong about my theory there .

I have an acer travelmate 4000 . win xp . i have tried the driver update programs and have tried a few differant drivers

I have been to the acer website and installed the drivers they say are correct for my machine . i use windows media player 11 , real player , divx player . ll do the same thing .

all work when using the inbuilt speakers on the laptop but all give incorrect sound with headphones.

Can somebody point me in the right direction to resolve this problem

Sounds like it is most likely a settings issue. Head to Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices. Check the Audio Tab for Advanced playback settings. Or the Hardware Tab for driver info.

New problem here.1. recently updated all drivers and such through lenovo updates and drivers after replacing laptop screen. now headphone jack no longer works. could be just coincidence. Sound continues to port through speakers, and I can't find any diagnostic to help me see if the audio card "sees" the headphones. yes, the headphones have been tested elsewhere. your suggestions appreciated.

It depends since the jack is usually 4 pin (for sound and mic). Its possible that the connections don't line up correctly. Try some other head phone or 3.5mm stereo device. If you've used it before and it worked with it maybe something is in there or its damaged. Its not possible to trouble should those possibilities.

is it possible to reconfiguer your line out 2 to come out of the headphone jack on the front of your pc? the cable for my line 2 speakers is not quite long enoigh, and would be good if it could come out of the headphone jack.

When I first installed Windows 7 on my computer I had to manually install a sound driver. I went to the Dell site and downloaded the only audio driver for my system, Dell Precision T7500.

The driver was SoundMax. The onboard sound worked, but the headphone socket one the front wasn't. Even when I had my headphones plugged it they werent getting picked up on Playback devices.

A friend of mine told me to just delete the driver, and let windows download its own sound driver (it didn't do it when I installed windows for some reason). So, I rebooted after uninstalling the SoundMax driver and Windows automatically downloaded and installed the "High Definition Audio Device" driver.

Now the audio icon in the windows tray has a red cross on and says "No speakers or headphones are plugged in" I plugged my headphones in on the fron headphone jack and its not picking them up.

I click the icon and let it troubleshoot headphones. I get the following message "The peripheral does not appear to be plugged in. Check the connection. Proceed to next step to finish." I unplug them and plug them back in, click next, and it just says the issue is not fixed.

I have taken the side panel off and check the connections and all wires are connected.

I just purchased a Dell XPS 8700 but the headphone jack on the top of the tower is not working. When I plug in headphones, the computer does not even recognize that something is plugged in. However it will notice if I plug something into the microphone jack next to it. Any help would be appreciated.

The tip of my headphones broke off in the jack. I can't seem to get it out of the jack. Now I don't have sound from the computer speakers. Is there a way to disable the headphone jack to restore the sound to the speakers?  Thanks for any help.

This is a problem that has happened twice before. At first I thought it was a fluke, but now I'm very concerned. Restarting my computer, or trying to go back to recovery a week ago has worked, but I don't know what's causing the problem. I get no sound whatsoever from any app, player, window, etc. I just downloaded the latest audio driver, but that did nothing.

Hi I have a problem with a Thinkpad SL300 and the headphone jack / audio out. If I plug my headphones in the jack (i have tried with several different), I don't get audio from the headphones. I recently upgraded my computer from windows 98 to windows me.  Upon doing this, I have now lost the sound output from my headphone jack on the front of my cd rom.  The speakers still work fine but there is no output on the jack.  Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Since I first got my Y50 the headphone jack has been admiting whitenoise/static sound constantly. The noise is very noticible and is annoying. It's getting worse now and I've already tried to fix it with no luck. Suggestions?

Recently purchased T450s from Lenovo Canada online. I have been having intermittent issues with sound, where sometimes no sound will come out of my headphones. Today the issue seems to have become more or less permanent. Sound comes out of the speakers, but not out of headphone jack. I have tried in both Linux and Windows with the same results. I have tried with multiple pairs of headphones and have ensured that the volume is turned up appropriately when the headphones are plugged in, but still hear no sound coming through. The headphones I have tried all work with other devices. I have rebooted several times in each operating system. I have Googled the issue, of course, but most solutions seem to be OS-specific. I am starting to think this is a hardware issue, as it occurs in both OS's. Any thoughts for next steps?

You can try this, right click on the volume symbol at the right bottom corner and select an option playback devices, make sure your headphones are connected to the audio jack port once you click on the playback device you see an icon where it will show headphones are detected.
